MISCELLANEOUS * (2019/01/09) Director Ringo Lam Lan Tung passed away at home at the end of last month at age 63. His family today began services for him in Po Fook Hill in Shatin with the funeral to take place the next day. Because the famly would like a low key event, they have declined any visit from family and friends, reminded everyone that no floral arrangement and offerings would be necessarily, and were grateful for condolences from colleagues and friends. Lam Lan Tung's friends Johnnie To Kei Fung, Sylvia Chang (Cheung Ngai Ga) and others formed a memorial committee and will host a memorial for Lam Lan Tung on the 26th at 3PM at Central. The memorial also would decline any floral arrangement. Friends would only need to dress in bright and light clothing. Because Director Lam loved film, cigar and red wine, the memorial would like everyone to leave their sorrow behind and remember him with a drink. * (2019/01/09) Wong Cho Lam, Roger Kwok Chun On, Kaki Leung, Anthony Ho Yuen Tung yesterday promoted their Lunar New Year film I LOVE YOU, YOU'RE PERFECT, NOW CHANGE! (NEI MAI LEI, NGOR OI NEI!) at Television City. The new father Cho Lam got excited whenever he talked about his daughter Gabrielle, and was jealous that his daughter would smile at the handsome Jason Chan Chi San but would only sleep with Papa. He has been waiting for his daughter to smile like for the peacock to spread its plumage. Cho Lam joked that he had to ask On Jai for advice. He revealed that the current stage was the happiest, because the baby girl slept for 24 hours and had grandparents, maternity helper and the maid to take care of her. His wife Leanne Li Yanan probably had it the hardest because she had to feed and change the baby on schedule and wait for her wounds to heal. Cho Lam could deeply sense how noble being a mother was. The new father Cho Lam was still learning. "So far I have only tried to feed her, I don't dare to change her yet. I am scared of even burping her, I am afraid that I might suffocating her." Cho Lam complained about this "little lover" with a smile, "She is despicable, she already knows how to check out guys. Earlier Chan Chi San and his wife visited my home, as soon as Jason picked her up she stared at him and gave him three smiles. When I look at her she would either be sleeping or not looking at me. Waiting for her to smile like waiting for the peacock plumage. (Are you jealous?) Of course, this bad girl forgets where she came from." Cho Lam would spend his first Lunar New Year as a family of three. She said, "I used to give and not get, this year I can exchange gifts (lai see)." He also said that told everyone that his daughter would definitely be at Lunar New Year visits and the hundred day banquet. On Jai in the film guest starred and praised how thoughtful the story arrangement was. He said, "In it I would reprise my immigration commercial from many years ago. Even I forgot that I made this commercial. Although I only had one scene, I always thought that just selling an appearance as a guest star wouldn't be too nice. People can savor the current arrangement." * (2019/01/08) DaDa Chan Jing, Hanjin Tan (Chan Woon Yan), Isabel Chan Yat Ning and Yanki Din (Ting Ho Yan) yesterday promoted their Lunar New Year film on the radio. DaDa in the film had a stunt on a wire. She worried about wardrobe malfunction but the director said that if she did then he would either censor the scene or cut it. DaDa said, "After the first time I saw that I was very scared, so I asked for another take. Finally it took four or five takes." In another Lunar New Year film Xenia Chong Shui Yi's figure was the focus, was DaDa concerned about any comparison? She said, "Never, there is no comparison. The director said that this time I am selling acting and comedy, which to me is a breakthrough." Chan Woon Yan and Tsui Tin Yau in the film had a relationship. Chan Woon Yan said that they would have passionate scenes. The director even personally demonstrated how they would perform. As for how "passionate", he revealed, "All naked, all tied up, all out, all in, we saw everything, after the shoot no one suspected that we were a couple. (Did your wife supervise?) BB (his wife) didn't mind, Tin Yau is so handsome." He pointed out that this time the co-stars and the director had top "face value", but said "hard and straight" instead. * (2019/01/07) Louis Koo Tin Lok, Nick Cheung Ka Fai, Francis Ng Chun Yu, Grace Wong Kwan Hing, Benjamin Yuen Wai Ho and Jiang Peiyao yesterday began work on the new film LINE WALKER 2 (SI TOH HUNG JEH: DIP YING HUNG DONG). The first film, television and music grand slam artist Goo Jai said that he was very happy, but because he was busy with work he had no time to celebrate. Earlier photos of cake cutting were last minute arrangements at a Performing Artist Guild meeting. As for singing again at the award show, Goo Jai was asked whether he would return to music this year. He said that movies would come first. As for his next goal, he joked that he wanted to participate in a 13 event iron man race. Joey Yung Cho Yee stated that she wanted to write a new song for Goo Jai and market him strongly as a dance singer, Goo Jai turned it down that he wanted to make movies first. As for the suspected foul language due to the excitement at the award show, Goo Jai said no comment. His co-star Ng Chun Yu said that Goo Jai and Cheung Ka Fai competed for the music rookie award back then. Goo Jai reacted, "No way, I really don't remember." As the Performing Artist Guild president Koo Tin Lok was said to pay for elder Lo Hoi Pang's surgery. He said no comment but revealed that the Guild will hold a fund raiser in March, the donations will help artists in need and charity projects. Music newcomers would perform as well. Was he preparing a recognized music award show? Goo Jai said that he had no comment currently and would have to wait for the opportunity to mature. The Guild has always helped with street performances, but knew that the venue and the method would run into technical difficulties. Thus they would have to handle them slowly. In addition, having worked with the late director Ringo Lam Lan Tung, Goo Jai admitted that now he still has not been able to accept the news of his death. Director Johnnie To Kei Fung has been responsible for the funeral arrangements. He knew that his family wanted the funeral to be a little more low key. The memorial will have to wait for To Sir's announce, if needed the Performing Artist Guild would certainly provide assistance. Speaking of director Lam Lan Tung's sudden passing, Chun Yu lamented and recalled something he has said -- a lot of life could not be unexpected. Once he learned about Lam's passing he was surprised and cherished their time together. Best Actor Ng Chun Yu released a record with OLD TIME BUDDY and even went double platinum. Speaking of Goo Jai's male singer award, Chun Yu joked that music truly was very tolerant. He did not want to return to music and ruin someone else's "turf". "Goo Jai is tolerated, I would be whatever." Chun Yu even remembered that back then Goo Jai and Cheung Ka Fai competed for music rookie award. He also suggested for himself to perform BOYFRIEND with Goo Jai, as two men in bathrobes would definitely be very erotic. With a record release Cheung Ka Fai said that he has not have the chance to congratulate Koo Tin Lok. Speaking of music owing him, Ka Fai said, "I like to sing, but I don't dare to sing in front of others. Goo Jai hasn't learned his lesson. Don't think that I am very excited about being a concert guest, actually I don't want to be. Please stop asking me." Speaking of his "brother" Jacky Cheung Hok Yau's upcoming concerts, Ka Fai said that he would show his support but would not appear on stage. He believed that Hok Yau would focus on his performance not drag him to the stage to embarrass him. Admitting that he only dared to face a machine, Ka Fai joked that he has already returned to music but only limited to his bathroom at home. He would not dare to perform other audience facing jobs like hosting and reality show. He said that he was already decades old and no longer needed to overcome any fear. * (2019/01/07) Janet Chow Ka Wai's ViuTV food program invited her father in law Sammo Hung Kam Bo as a guest. Her co-host Lau Wing Kin invited his father Lau Ka Wing to the taping. Today is Hung Kam Bo's 67th birthday, Ka Wai prepared a cake and gave the birthday song to celebrate with her father in law. Hung Kam Bo happily said, "I am happy everyday, not just only birthdays, Happy Everyday!" Today he would probably celebrate with his family. Lau Ka Wing jokingly asked for an invitation, and Hung Kam Bo replied in jest that he should give me lai see first. Hung Kam Bo and Lau Ka Wing have known each other since they were little. Hung Kam Bo revealed that when he was little Lau Ka Wing often picked on him. Lau Ka Wing admitted, "He was just a few years old when he started, if I didn't pick on him, should I have picked on someone several decades old?" Hung continued, "In terms of fighting I am no match for him. He could knock down someone in several dozen seconds." Lau Ka Wing humbly said, "That's just promotion, don't believe that." Speaking of movies, Hung Kam Bo said, "If I have he chance I want to work with old actors like (Karl) Maka, (Richard) Ng Yiu Hon, and Ka Wing. (Five Lucky Stars?) Old Lucky stars, I can make Hong Kong films but let's see if today I hit the lottery." Hung Kam Bo felt that Hong Kong film used to be the dragon head of Asia, unfortunately now anywhere is stronger than Hong Kong. It's like a steak on the road, 'no taboo' -- it's nothing at all. After Ka Wing and I gradually retreated, Wu Jing can still fight, (Max) Zhang Jin can fight but may not be able to rise. I really don't know. In the past you had a chance to become a martial art star with martial art training, getting the younger folks hope. Now there is no hope to give them. Even Tony Jaa began his training after watching Hong Kong film because he wanted to become a martial art superstar. Without Hong Kong film he still would be picking up after elephants." Would he pass kung fu to his grandson? He said, "I am afraid that he would refuse to see Grandpa after that. Last time I told him to go to sleep he already said he wouldn't see me, how could I dare to tell him to study kung fu!" * (2019/01/06) The Yuen Woo Ping (Lord Eight) directed, Raymond Wong Pak Ming and Donnie Yen Chi Tan produced, Max Zhang Jin, Dave Bautista, Michelle Yeoh (Yeung Chi King), Tony Jaa, Kevin Cheng Ka Wing, Chrissie Chau Sau Na, Shi Yanneng, Patrick Tam Yiu Man starred kung fu epic MASTER Z: THE IP MAN LEGACY (IP MAN OI JUEN: CHEUNG TIN CHI) in the past Christmas slot did not fear the onslaught from various foreign films. So far the film almost reached HK$ 13 million and eighth in the 2018 highest grossing Hong Kong film. The film is still in release. GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY and AVENGERS' Hollywood action superstar Dave used to be a professional wrestler. With his size he was a heavyweight opponent. In the film he and Shi Yanneng fought a life and death duel. Shi Yanneng once revealed that he had a disc dislocation after an accident during the fight. Aside from this scene, Dave also had a fight in a restaurant with Zhang Jin. Lord Eight got Dave, who was obviously taller, bigger and stronger than Zhang Jin, and designed power punches against the even more agile wing chun moves that avoided hard contact; yet to be reasonable, he even asked Dave to lift up Zhang Jin and toss him. Zhang Jin said, "During the fight, I felt like I hit him with ten punches but he could knock me out with just one punch! During the shoot we would have safety precautions, but to really get picked up, tossed toward the wall and through glass was still rather damaging! It made sense because he was infinitely strong and able to do so." As for working on his first Hong Kong kung fu film, Dave said that he not use was not used to the production that was different from Hollywood, but also some scenes that were even crazy to him. "However Lord Eight was very patient. He would show me completed shots so I felt like I would be able to complete the stunt. The result was reasonable. I am very grateful to the director!" In addition in a dramatic scene, Dave and Cheng Ka Wing both had steaks but neither ate beef. To keep from affecting production, both took the "chew and spit" approach and were rather professional. * (2019/01/05) Hong Kong Film Award winning director Ringo Lam Lan Tung earlier passed away. Friend and writer Shum Sai Sing talked about working with him and revealed that when they made CITY ON FIRE, the lead actress originally belonged to Cherie Chung Chor Hung! As CITY ON FIRE's writer and actor, Shum Sai Sing said that the last time he saw Lam Lan Tung was in 2017. At the time Lam came to Shanghai and thus they met for coffee and chat. He said that Lam lived in Shanghai for awhile, and was still very passionate about film. He revealed that around the mid 80s when he was at Cinema City, Lam Lan Tung told him to help with ideas. At the time a watch store robbery took place and he knew the case very well. Thus he suggested making it into a film, the idea was approved and CITY was born. Although the project was greenlit, it ran into difficulties galore! Shum Sai Sing said, "At the time CITY's production budget wasn't a lot. Even Chow Yun Fat charged a friendly rate. At the time we really wanted Chung Chor Hung for the lead actress, but Mak Sir (Karl Maka) said no because the salary was too high. Thus we asked (Carrie) Ng Ka Lai. Ah Tung told me to play one of the roles, to save on the production cost!" Lam Lan Tung was known for serious production. Shum Sai Sing admitted that he took so much risk that he neglected worker safety. He said, "Ah Tung was completely into the movie as soon as he took his spot and became the nervous master! Actually that was a good thing, but his flaw was that he didn't really noticed the state of the mind of the crew around him. He took too many risks! Thus workers would have words for him, leading to some unable to tolerate his style." * (2019/01/05) Donnie Yen Chi Tan, Wong Jing, and Philip Ng Won Lung two nights ago worked on their film ENTER THE FAT DRAGON (FEI LUNG GOR GONG) in an alley in Kowloon Bay. Chi Tan said that the film took a year to make because changes were made as the shoot went on. This day was already the final night. In two scenes he would have to mess with himself as he performed classic scenes from FLASHPOINT and SPL, with the same costume, same staff and at the same back alley as he did 15 years ago for SPL. Yen Chi Tan joked, "The costume is still a little loose now because my chest wasn't so firm before. Instead my belly got a little fatter, but it's healthy fat." Chi Tan pointed out that ENTER THE FAT DRAGON was not entirely a comedy. He said that he would not be absurd, which he would leave for Wong Jing. This was his third collaboration with Wong Jing. They worked at different posts so the collaboration has been very pleasant. As for the chubby costume in the film, he said, "It's a very handsome chubby. Actually years ago I did a commercial with this chubby look. At the time a friend already suggested for me to transition it into a film character. (Does your wife like your chubby look?) My children don't recognize me, at the set they have no idea who is Daddy." He also said that because he felt the Chinese title was pretty cute he bought the title right. However the story would be all new. As for the Lunar New Year, Chi Tan said that he would spend it in Hong Kong because he would have to attend a family wedding. Investor and star Wong Jing stated that this time he spent heavily, as the production cost was as expensive as CHASING THE DRAGON. The first half was shot in Japan and a studio set of Kabukicho was constructed for a car chase scene. Did his acting bug get its fill? Wong Jing said that at first when Chi Tan asked him to perform he was unwilling, because fight scenes would be very exhausting. He even suggested to pay more for Sammo Hung Kam Bo. However Chi Tan disagreed and insisted on him performing. Wong Jing said, "I am dying from all the fighting! I too had to fight alone against several people! Chi Tan fought against several dozen, without fighting I wouldn't know how well I could fight. Chi Tan regretted this chubby look very much, each time in make up all the gluing was quite a pain. The film will be released in April. Now getting a cinema circuit has been very tough." In addition, speaking of the earlier passing of veteran director Ringo Lam Lan Tung, Wong Jing sentimentally said, "Someone told me services will take place on the 9th, the location would be better left for the family to announce. When I heard the news in Beijing I really was stunned. As bad as it sounded I said, 'I would die before he would'! Life is very fragile." In this scene, Ng Won Lung guest starred and imitated SPL's Wu Jing to fight with Chi Tan. He said that he was so nervous he could not sleep the nigh before. Because Chi Tan was his idol, being able to spar with Chi Tan was his honor. Speaking of the rumors after being caught out with Kong Ka Man, Ng Won Lung stated that Kong Ka Man sent the news to him. Very obviously it was not true. That day after promoting FIST FIGHT they went Christmas shopping and left. He said that he was also very close with Kong Ka Man's boyfriend as they always played video games together. Would he find a girlfriend? He said that he would let it up to Heaven to arrange it. * (2019/01/04) The Pang Ho Cheung directed, Gigi Leung Wing Kei, DaDa Chan Jing, Isabel Chan Yat Ning, Lam Suet, Patrick Tse Yin, Jo Kuk Cho Lam and Miriam Yeung Chin Wa starred Lunar New Year film MISSBEHAVIOR (GUNG HEI BAK POR) yesterday released its official trailer. The trailer began with Lam Suet, who "greeted" Yeung Chin Wa and told Chin Wa to "speak English". She was stunned. Chin Wa said that the appearance in the trailer absolutely was not acting because it was a real reaction. "Brother Suet was loud and the set was very quiet. As soon as he turned around he loudly dropped the bomb. I really was stunned from fright. I had to wait for awhile before I remembered to deliver my lines." DaDa's low cut leap also caught a lot of eyeballs. DaDa said, "The scene actually required wires. Since it was my first time I really was a little nervous. Instead I was the most afraid of wardrobe malfunction. I took all the precautions before appearing on the set." DaDa's niece Little Mantou also performed. DaDa also praised her niece's great performance. In addition, Pang Ho Cheung's movies have always been very "domestic". Aside from adding topical figure "Yam Ho Yan", he also invited internet artist Yanki Din ("Sister Turkey" Ting Ho yan) and Manner's Hou Dee to join the fray. * (2019/01/04) The 41st Top Ten Chinese Gold Song Concert took place last night. Broadcast Authority chief Leung Ka Wing presented the Global Chinese Gold Song award to Supper Moment's ORANGE SEA. The Most Excellent Male Pop Singer went to Hins Cheung King Hin, the Most Excellent Female Pop Singer went to Kay Tse On Kay. Including the earlier Ultimate and Metro Radio awards, Hin Jai has won 10 awards to become the biggest male singer winner. Tse On Kay became the female singer big winner. Group Supper Moment received the Global Chinese Gold Song. The band happily said that this was too exaggerated because they never thought about winning such a big award. Their goal was very suitable for this award, as they hope to bring their music and performance out of Hong Kong. Last year they were able to perform a concert in England and introduce themselves to people overseas. When Supper Moment performed ORANGE SEA, they sang to the audience, "The venue prohibits silence, everyone raise your hands and fill this place with love!" The "Most Excellent Male Pop Singer" Cheung King Hin said, "This has been a harvest year, with the support of a good team and good songs we went through storms together. I also thanked Radio Hong Kong for giving me the chance to host when I started. I had a good foundation and I miss it very much. In 2019, I will start over and keep working hard, see you on the stage again next year!" The "Most Excellent Female Pop Singer" Tse On Kay said, "This is the first time I won this award. I am very, very happy. Ths year has been a very special year. Earlier I rested for a very long time. Working with the current team and Juno (Mak Chun Lung), I took risks and challenged myself. I have everyone's encouragement. I would with my humblest heart thank everyone, whether on or off stage you have told me that I have value!" the event arranged for ten singers including Joyce Cheng Yun Yi, AGA Kong Hoi Ka, Pakho Chau, Hubert Wu Hung Kwan, Andy Leung, Jason Chan Pak Yu, Gin Lee Hung Ngai, JW, Alfred Hui Ting Hung and James Ng Yip Kwan performed this year's theme song SING THE WORLD SONG to open the concert. Elders like Jacky Cheung Hok Yau and Leon Lai Ming performed the song in the past. Then mystery guest Nicholas Tse Ting Fung appeared and performed Beyond's SHINING AGE. As he sang he told the audience to sing along, the audience clapped along and sang. Then he sang his song BLUE SKY. Ting Fung was raised to a smaller stage for a guitar solo as he removed his leather jacket. When he performed DIVING DRAGON he again picked up his guitar and sang. The Top Ten Gold Song winners appeared and performed half of their winning songs. First Hui Ting Fung sang SPARE A LISTEN, then Wu Hung Kwan sang I WAS HERE, AGA performed MINOR PROBLEM, Chan Pak Yu sang SERIOUS AS EVER. Popular online singer JC followed with two songs. Sing out performed OCTAVE JOURNEY and then IDENTITY with Supper Moment. Supper Moment also performed their winning son ORANGE SEA. Pakho Chau performed BEHIND A MAN in a bowtie and a suit. Ng Yip Kwan was so intense when he sang FILIAL PIETY that his eyes were closed. Gin Lee also pressed against her chest tensely when she performed VERY TOUGH. The event played the late singer Ellen Loo (Lo Hoi tung)'s song creation video in memory of her. Tse On Kay and Sacred Heart Canossian College Alumni Choir performed. Golden Needle award winner Tat Ming Pair appeared, played a medley of heir song to a standing ovation. Cheng Yun Yi and Gin Lee danced in the audience, even Winnie Yu Jung helped and played the ukulele and presented the Golden Needle award to them. The concert ended with a performance with Cheung King Hin, dancer Mui Cheuk Yin and cyr wheel artist Yang Shih-hao. Ng Yip Kwan performed his elders' classic song THE WORLD SONG and got the feeling of the torch being passed. He was also very honored to be one of the ten singers to perform it, as he felt like he was being recognized. Speaking of this year's award show performance paling from last year's, Brother Kwan admitted that he asked himself whether he did not work as hard and as diligently as other singers. This was his shame so he would like to return to the stage in 2019. However after 4 years, he was able to accept awards on the stage for the first 3 years and still felt very lucky. When he saw Ting Fung, he was very surprised. He felt his stage presence because he already liked Ting Fung's JADE BUTTERFLY in fourth or fifth grade. He said, "I listen to him sing since I was little! Now he actually appear in person, the feeling is very wonderful, very gratifying. I hope ten years from now, someone would say that they have been listening to my songs since elementary school!" Yesterday morning, the film released a funny hand drawn nine frame cartoon poster. On it various characters widened their eyes and opened their mouth to ask a question, "Who will be the new king of comedy?" That night, NEW KING OF COMEDY's first trailer was finally released. The trailer opened with the same question, then various small characters appeared. Through various exaggerated and funny performance they "competed" for this "career with a future". Each inspirational line made people laugh while at the same time igniting the fire inside. "Extras are actors too." "You have to believe you are the best, not second or third, you are number one!" "The trailer is all small characters, this is very Chow Sing Chi!" Instead, each small character in the trailer was like the Chow Sing Chi played Wan Tin Sau 20 years ago. They were neglected, overestimated, oppressed, but they still persisted in chasing their dreams. Even when dirtied and disheveled, they still persisted with their dreams and believed that they were the best. This was the spirit that everyone would need in 2019, and the best embodiment of the words "hard work and struggle". * (2019/01/03) Dior Cheng Yi Kin and Gigi Ma Lai Ka Yi (Lai Chi) earlier appeared on a radio interview. They both agreed that they did not change much, bu they were much more mature than before. Gigi said that their personalities used to be similar, unable to express themselves or handle matter. They hid a lot inside. She felt that Ekin looked aloof but was very hard working inside. Perhaps since they were both Libras they were more reserved and quiet. Ekin said, "She and Ah Yo (Yoyo Mung Ka Wai) are very close!" Now they both have their own happy families. Gigi felt that happiness actually was very simple, as long as you knew how to be grateful and easy to please the gates of happiness would open for you! "Life has ups and downs, with success and failure, even you are down you have to be grateful, treat setbacks like life training." Ekin agreed, as he felt life should not be too complicated. The classic film YOUNG AND DANGEROUS (GOO WAT JAI) brought Ekin and Gigi together. Ekin actually remembered Gigi's drinking song WHITE SHIRT the most. He even sang it to Gigi, who was in a white shirt and made Gigi crack up. Ekin said that his deepest impression of her was WHITE SHIRT, as people still remembered this song today. They also recalled the YOUNG AND DANGEROUS era. Gigi said that she used to be a singer, but her costumes in the film were rather forward as she always wore super sexy short dresses. She said, "I thought what was I going to do! However I had Ekin there, with him it would be the best product." Ekin felt that their collaboration had great chemistry. They experienced a lot during he shoot. Gigi had a fear of heights but had to jump from the roof. Gigi said that at first she thought she would have a stunt double, but actually she had to jump in person. Once she got hurt. Although they did not see each other often, on the program they could not stop talking as their friendship would always remain in their hearts! [ BLAH OF THE WEEK ] Columns, Reviews, Interviews 1. BURNING was based on the Haruki Murakami's short novel BARN BURNING, and originally a novelist behind film Lee Dong-Chong's second adaptation of someone else's literary work after SECRET SUNSHINE. - LAU WAI LAM Son of a farmer, Jongsu (Yoo Ah-In) after graduating from the university with a creative writing degree and military service works as a freelance laborer in Seoul. He runs into compatriot Hae-mi, who also works in Seoul as a freelance model. Jongsu sees the former ugly duckling turned hot girl now, with Hae-mi taking the initiative they very quickly have relations. Jongsu's father is in prison for battery and Jongsu has to return home to take care of the farm. Hae-mi travels to Africa and asks Jongsu to feed her cat. Jongsu commutes between his home (near the North Korena border) and Seoul, he never sees the cat in Hae-mi's room despite the food has been eaten and waste has been found. Hae-mi finally returns. At the airport with her is a Korean man she meet there, Ben (Steven Yeun). Ben s a rich kid who lives in a high class residential district, claiming to be unemployed. Jongsu can see that Hae-mi and Ben have something between them. Hae-mi takes Ben's luxury sports car to look for Jongsu at his home. After smoking some marijuana, Hae-mi begins to strip. As Hae-mi and Ben leaves, Jongsu calls her a whore. Since then he has not seen Hae-mi, as if she has vanished from the world. Haruki Murakami's BARN BURNING itself is considered a secondary creation. American writer William Faulkner also has a short story of the same name. Murakami uses this title to create an all new story. The opening title of BURNING clearly states that it is based on Murakami's BARN BURNING. Yet Lee Chong-Dong's BURNING leaves traces of Faulkner, like the farm background, violent father, Jongsu's favorite writer is Faulker. After losing touch with Hae-mi, Jongsu looks for Ben and finds him reading Faulkner's short stories (after the recommendation of Jongsu). The chance of the book being on BARN BURNING is very likely. Lies And Testing This writer saw the movie first before reading Murakami and Faulkner's BARN BURNING, so he would suggest readers to do the same. If you come prepared, you can easier have expectations. Before discussing the relationships between BURNING and the two short stories, first let's talk about the movie, in particular some praises and criticism of this film. First, lying or testing constantly appears in this film. Hae-mi is the embodiment of lies. Her family says she loves to make up stuff. When she runs into Jongsu she says that she becomes beautiful because of plastic surgery. If what she says is true, plastic surgery is "deceit"; if she did not have plastic surgery then she lied. When Jongsu is a guest at Ben's home the first time, Hae-mi is there. Jongsu wants to go to the bathroom but he asks Hae-mi, "Do you know where the bathroom is?" He did not ask Ben, as if he is testing whether Hae-mi has been there before or whether she and Ben already had intimate relations. These are all Lee Chong-Dong's story, their names are as well, but because they are easy to read this writer would continue to use "Jongsu", "Hae-mi" and"Ben" to describe the Murakami version of the trio. Hae-mi studied miming and was able to eat invisible orange, which came from Murakami's original work. However the cat is only in the movie. The monologue of "I love barn burning" is the focus in Murakami's original work and the movie. In the film, it becomes "greenhouse burning". Did Ben after the three of them get together go to burn the greenhouse alone? Like in Murakami's original, Jongsu does not find any burnt greenhouse. In the second half of the film Jongsu looks for the whereabous of Hae-mi, which also is a journey of attempting to recover lies. If BURNING is compared directly to the two original short stories, fatal spoilres would definitely result and be marked with "X" below. Lee Chong-Dong's adaptation wants to provide an answer to the truth that Murakami did not clearly state behind Hae-mi's missing, which is X. This writer feels that this two and half hour long movie is set up to move toward X. When spoiled, it is not worth watching. Empty yet decorated (but not considered breakthrough) scenes make something out of nothing and drag on, which is this writer's personal opinion. Dare To Create Again Some have nothing but praise, feeling that Lee Chong-Dong through this film talks about the generational conflict and the counterstriker of the poor in modern Korea. This writer feels that is hard to validate. First Hae-mi and Jongsu's lives are more than living poorly. Ben's rich life in comparison to many Korean series male leads' extravagance is only middle class. Jongsu is more mild mannered, feeling bad about his father's brutish violence against his neighbor and public servant. He even wants to apologize to them, how can he counterstrike? The film's production method is full of sunshine in the first half and gradually darken in the second half, yet none of it is fiery rage. Whether the economy is good or bad, in developed or developing countries, a difference in wealth would always exist. If insisting on this film having generational conflict and counterstrike of the poor, then most of the film can just be a thing of fancy. This writer truly cannot see Lee Chong-Dong's attempt in writing about class conflict in this film, instead describing his previous film POETRY like that would not be as forced. If you want to watch the frustration of poor youth, you might as well see Japanese directors' work like Mitsuo Yanagimachi's THE 19-YEAR-OLD MAP; to see wealth hatred, watching Korean drama would be even more fulfilling. Speaking of the subject of lies, when Jongsu uncovers X, Lee Chong-Dong both provides us with so-called "evidence" and at the same time also constantly shoots him in dreams or waking. With all the lies and testing throughout the entire film, he achieves a feeling of difficulty with differentiation between what is real and fake. Thus any claim that X has a chance to be Jongsu's fantasy or arbitration is not baseless. With Martin Scorsese's THE KING OF COMEDY, a young film critic reminded this writer that not only Rupret's initial fantasy of catching Jerry's eye is fake, even when Rupert's plot comes to fruition and becomes an overnight hit on television it is definitely Rupert's imagination. The entire film is delusion! Thus this writer at the opening of the article stresses that Lee Chong-Dong originally is a novelist. He wants the reader to think, when Lee Chong-Dong adapts another novelist's work to a movie would he be willing to just do so word for word? This writer feels that if a novelist adapts someone else's story in its original form, it is almost plagiarism. Only by daring to make changes would he or she be do the original work and the identity as a novelist justice. Whether it is good or bad it is secondary. Like how Wong Kar Wai handles Louis Cha, Liu Yichang novels or Ip Man's history, Lee Chong-Dong wants to use Murakami's secondary creation very organically for what he wants to say, his own interpretation and write a third creation or a "new" creation. Thus even though this writer feels this film's answer is empty, he still compares BURNING to Murakami and Faulkner's work. At most it is a "case study" of film adaptation of literature. If BURNING's good or bad reviews are based on its similarities or differences from the original, undoubtedly they get the wrong idea. 2. TA KUNG PAO, JANUARY 3 2019, LIGHT SHADOW PATH REMEMBERING DIRECTOR RINGO LAM In the New Year, I wish everyone good health and happy life. Last year many masters passed away in the cultural world, to this writer one hurt more than another because one was closer than another. The most heartbreaking was director Ringo Lam Lan Tung who passed away in his dreams earlier. His passing was a loss for the film industry and made the unexpectedness of life stand out. I met director Lam Lan Tung in the 80s, in different degrees witnessing his most representative work CITY ON FIRE, PRISON ON FIRE and SCHOOL ON FIRE's productions and sales. At the time I felt that Director Lam was a master of realistic films, his grasp on the understanding of human naure and commercial elements were unrivaled. My relationship with "Ah Tung" mainly was because of CITY ON FIRE. At the time this writer worked in promotions for Cinema City's parent company Golden Princess, specializing in film promotion and advertising. In that era, after a film was made it would be "machine synched". In other words the completed film and the dialogue tapes would be played simultaneous in the recording studio for workers and promotional people to watch together. Then they would meet to discuss the film content. In the meeting this writer was quite "picky", one of which was questioning the character Chow Yun Fat played. What was his job? At the time someone said "undercover", an answer that I was not pleased with as I felt in the story he definitely would have a secret identity. Director Lam cracked up and said, "Wow you caught that!" Actually the character was a bar "watchman" (security manager), because some scenes were cut that was never clear. At that meeting Director Lam discovered that I was a "problem youth", so he invited me to "chat" at Cinema City. "Ah Tung" felt that I could be a screen writer, so he asked me what kind of movies I liked. I named three: KARATE KID, LIVE AND DIE IN L.A. and I have already forgotten the third. Coincidentally he also liked those three films. Thus, I became a screen writer, writing MARTIAL ART ON FIRE that he was satisfied with. Later because he had to make PRISON ON FIRE my script was set aside. Years later he asked me if I had a copy of the script, obviously after several moves no one was able to find that script anymore. Lam Lan Tung was the first director who brought me to work behind the scene in film and also let me name appear in a film for the first time. When he made PRISON ON FIRE, I often went to chat with him at Cinema City. Once I saw him in deep thoughts. After greeting him he suddenly said, "You are here just in time, your Chinese background is good, writing lyrics for me!" Actually he was writing lyrics for the PRISON ON FIRE theme song. For no apparent reason the tone deaf me accepted the challenge. After spending a week I wrote a theme song called FULL OF HOPE, my first step out of film work. Thus calling Lam Lan Tung my film mentor truly could not be more apt. (to be continued) - TIN LIK [ In Production Now/Soon ] Can : Gum Doh Lit : Golden Cty d. Opening January 31 2019 Trailer : https://youtu.be/qe_oUETtjTM [ BROADWAY CIRCUIT ] Morikazu Kumagai (aka Mori) was born in 1880 and became one of Japan's most celebrated 20th-century painters. His gift for painting was recognized very early on in his career but the opinions of critics and fame were never his priority. His sporadic output didn't result in sales. He didn't own a house and survived with friends' help until the age of 50 when his paintings began to sell and he could at last support his family. The Emperor was full of admiration for a Kumagai painting he saw at the prestigious Nika Art Exhibition. This brought recognition to Kumagai who was known as the "hermetic sage with a paintbrush" but Kumagai twice turned down the Emperor's Japanese order of Culture award. The reason he gave for declining these awards was that he was already receiving too many visitors. True to his reclusive nature, he barely left his 60-square-meter home for 30 years. He didn't have to because he observed animals and plants in his little garden. This movie is based on an actual account; it depicts one day in his twilight years when he never left home.
