MISCELLANEOUS * (2019/01/02) The 2018 Commercial Radio Ultimate Song Chart Award took place last night at the Convention Center. This year's theme was "Our Songtopia", meaning that everyone had an award show that belonged to them in their hearts. The even presented 43 awards. "My Favorite Song" went to CENTENNIAL TREE. Louis Koo Tin Lok after 19 years appeared at a music award show again and won "My Favorite Male Singer" as the favorite. He even made an exception and sang BOYFRIEND acapella to bring the evening to its peak. He joked, "The world really has miracles, I actually get to go on this stage and accept this award!" Kay Tse On Kay after 14 years in the business defeated "nemesis" Joey Yung Cho Yee for the first time to win the Female Singer gold prize, with 3.5 awards she even became the big winner. Joey also won her long sorted after "Ultimate Song" award to complete her "grand slam" dream. Everyone went home happy. When the show began each DJ introduced singers. Leading the pack were Juno Mak Chun Lung and Kay Tse On Kay, then Joyce Cheng Yun Yi, James Ng Yip Kwan, Alfred Hui Ting Hung, Pakho Chau, JW, Jason Chan Pak Yu, Charmaine Fong Ho Man, Gin Lee Hung Ngai, Endy Chow Kwok Yin and others. The new guy group Mirror received much applause. Hins Cheung King Hin and Joey Yung Cho Yee finished the line up. Joey also made her first appearance this year at a music award show. The event presented the Rookie gold, silver and bronze prizes to Kaho Hung, Tsang Lok Tung and Cath Wong. Rumored girlfriend of the band Mr.'s MJ, Cath Wong got sentimental during her speech and thanked MJ. "No matter how our relationship changes, you would always support me." Silver prize winner Tsang Lok Tung thanked her grandpa who was on bed rest due to illness and got teary eyed. She believed that although Grandpa might not see her win, he would be able to sense her joy. Tsang Lok Tung also gave special thanks to elder Cheung King Hin because he unconditionally helped her with her stress as a new comer. Gold prize winner Kaho Hung said that he grew up a lot in the past year, which was also full of setbacks. Because he often had his head down and lived in uneasiness, after the award he had to remind himself no to lower his head anymore and to keep making good music. Best Actor Koo Tin Lok since winning the new comer award in 2000 again with the duet (A MAN) A WOMAN AND THE BATHROOM successfully gained "popularity" among listeners as he defeated Chow Kwok Yin, Chan Pak Yu, Eason Chan Yik Shun and Cheung King Hin for "My Favorite Male Singer". Goo Jai made a surprise appearance with his arms raised high, as the entire audience gave him a standing ovation in support. Koo Tin Lok said, "I really like to sing, bu I don't know how to sing! Please don't stand, I am not accepting the Lifetime Achievement Award. Winning My Favorite isn't something that happens overnight, I know I won My Favorite not because of my great singing." Goo Jai explained that last year as the Performing Artist Guild president he met with many singers, understood their difficulties and hoped to revive the music industry. He said, "I discover that the fire in everyone has never been extinguished. I am very happy, I can get on the stage. I hope everyone can continue the dream and the fire in their hearts, Papa taught me not to be afraid of being taken advantage of. I am not saying that the duet with Tse On Kay is being taken advantage of, it is daring to try, daring to do, never give up, keep making good Cantonese songs!" Goo Jai graciously sang and invited Joey, Kay, Juno Mak Chun Lung and Cheung King Hin to the stage for "courage" as background singers. However he declined to sing POPULAR THIS WEEK, instead he finally sang a few verses of BOYFRIEND acapella and won the entire audience's applause. At her 20th anniversary in the business, Yung Cho Yee over the years at different awards show received different awards. This year she finally won her first Ultimate Song Award. When producer Shu Man pointed out that exciting people and events needed time to wait for them to happen, Joey was already in tears. She said, "I started in the last century. I was a 1999 new comers, all along with everyone I longed for the Ultimate Song. With that state of mind and hard work I performed every song, until today in 2019 when the Ultimate Song was presented to me. Thank you everyone!" However she did not land in the top three for the Female Singer award. Tse On Kay since starting in 2005 won her first Female Singer gold prize. She emotionally embraced her colleague Mak Chun Lung. She said, "Actually I haven't attended an award show for several years, I once was disillusioned and really wanted to rest. My music once brought me a lot of memorable moments, but I didn't know how to handle them. I thought about letting go of music. Today I face an award show today, instead I changed my state of mind. I can openly face it because what I see here isn't defeat or victory, but sincere support. Thank you!" She even won a song award, My Favorite Female Singer and split Ultimate Record with Mak Chun Lung. Wiht 3.5 awards she became the evening's big winner. As for Male singers, Cheung King Hin this year won the gold prize as the favorite. After 2015 and 2016, he won this award for the third time. He also won a song award and My Favorite Song, pocketing three major awards. Hui Ting Hung and Chow Kwok Yin won silver and bronze for Male Singer. Song writer award went to Cousin Fung. He made a comparison to a wrong beef noodle order, sometimes he did not know what kind of song singers would want. He also thanked his wife for helping him with his choice of clothing, otherwise he would dare to wear "boxers" to the stage. Lyrics award went to Abrahim Chan Wing him, who said that he though about whether he would have jeer or applause. He expressed that musicians often would have the speech overshadowed by such noise and lose themselves in music. However he would continue to work hard and make good music. In recent months he faced personal attacks online. The host said that he originally was unable to personally accept the award and planned to have Pakho Chau accept it on his behalf. Chan Wing Him originally was singing backup for Andy Lau Tak Wa's concert, later Wa Jai cancelled his concerts due to the flu and Chan Wing Him was able to accept the award in person. The producer award went to Shu Man. When host Pitar Leung Man Lai presented the Ultimate Top Ten number eight song PEACE FOR YOUNG AND OLD, she mistakenly said Chow Kwok Yin instead of Pakho Chau. Both singers stood up at once, but Endy graciously congratulated Pakho Chau and even walked him to the stage. Later Chow Kwok Yin with OLD BOMB won the number six song. He excitedly darted to the stage to accept the award. In the "Ultimate Remembers Ellen Loo" segment, a special edit of Lo Hoi Tung's interview recordings and videos was played. In it Ellen mentioned her relationship with guitar, once due to too many performances she minded it. "Later when I embrace guitar anew, I felt like a little kid again. A simple melody actually could be great, actually the simpler it was the happier it was. Then I could write songs ago. My relationship with guitar was very complicated yet very simple." The screen displayed "Wish you happiness, blank space here". Then her song IF STILL HAVE TIME was played as the lyrics went, "Clouds palely shine, your smile never ages from here on." 2018 COMMERCIAL RADIO ULTIMATE SONG CHART AWARDS ULTIMATE SONG: SCIENCE OF THE HEART (Joey Yung) PROFESSIONAL RECOMMENDATION ULTIMATE TOP TEN 2. With the 15th anniversary of Sister Mui's passing, the Hong Kong Women Development Association presented an "Outstanding Woman" award to her. Mother Mui accepted on her behalf. Playing one of Sister Mui's fans in the film, Kwok Sin Nei said that originally she wanted to bring her husband to the show. Unfortunately she informed the event too late and no more ticket was available. She could only buy tickets later. Kwok Sin Nei did not have a chance to see Sister Mui in person, but she was her idol. When she heard Sister Mui's songs, all the memories came back. Kwok Sin Nei's character needed to cry with all her might, and she performed wholeheartedly. She said that normally when she cried to her husband it would be ineffective. She said, "My husband is a tough guy but has no tenderness. My crying is useless. Once our daughter and I pretend to cry about not having money for dinner, he didn't fall for it. Of course when I am really unhappy he would comfort me." Lam Tak Shun in the film played Kung Chi Yan's son. With help from Sister Mui's foundation he was able to go overseas and chase his music dream. The character was based on a true story. "When the real life version of the character was little he lost his parents. Mui Yim Fong's foundation sent him overseas to study music. Now he is a very famous musician. He is the same age as me, and our background is somewhat similar. All of which are helpful to my performance." Alex's onscreen father was Joey Tang Kin Ming. When they had time they often played music together, so they was able to get into character even easier. Alex said that since he grew up overseas he never had the chance to meet Sister Mui. However before the shoot he did his research and learned from his father George Lam Chi Cheung that Sister Mui was very friendly and really took care of her friends. Having worked on director Ringo Lam Lan Tung's final film EIGHT AND A HALF (BAK BO BOON), Kung Chi Yan said that although it was her first collaboration with Director Lam she already really admired him. "He has a very stubborn nostalgia for Hong Kong, very thorough with his human nature depictions. When we actors met his demands, he would look very pleased. Thus everyone had a very pleasant time working together. his son in the film played my son." As for when the film will be released, Kung Chi Yan said that she has not received any update yet. * (2018/12/31) Susan Shaw Yam Yam, Suet Lei and Lam Chiu Wing yesterday attended Bread-TV Vibration Awards 2018. Bread TV president Lam Chiu Wing led artists in a moment of silence for director Ringo Lam Lan Tung, who passed away two nights ago, in praising of him enormous contributions to Hong Kong film and the new impact he brought to film. Shaw Yam Yam said that due to how suddenly it happened, she found it hard to get over and accept. Two nights ago she cried all night and her eyes were all red. She and many of her friends would all miss Lam Lan Tung. Shaw Yam Yam said that she and Lam Lan Tung were both singing students of Chun Yin, thus they have known each other for decades. She really admired how he kept his feet on the ground, his effort and focus on what he did. "I thought he would at least live until 80. In my impression Ah Tung was very strong, he moved more powerfully than the stunt team. He also knew how to teach actors acting, as a person he was humorous and well mannered. He was also a good friend, a good father. I know that before he passed, his wife and son tried their best to wake him. I never expect this would happen before the New York, I believe it is a tremendous tragedy to his family. However thinking positively, he passed without pain and suffering, I hope his family would bravely live on for him." * (2018/12/31) Yesterday was the 15th anniversary of the late diva Anita Mui Yim Fong's passing. Friends and fans have not stopped missing her. Anita Yuen Wing Yi, Andy Hui Chi On, Choy Yat Kit posted Sister Mui's photos and messages on social media. A group of fans went to Shang Sin Chun Tong to pay their respect to their idol with fresh flowers and many of Sister Mui's favorite food. A dozen or so Mui fans yesterday arrived at Shang Sin Chun Tong with fresh flowers, snacks, fruits, sushi, sandwiches, custard tart, instant noodle cups, Hainan chicken and rice and other Sister Mui's favorite food. They also wrote messages to Sister Mui. Some quoted Sister Mui's hit YEARS STREAM LIKE WATER. A fan expressed that everyone came on their own. Every year on October 10th (Sister Mui's birthday) and passing date they would come to pay their respect. Sister Mui's fan club would also notify everyone about any memorial events. Yuen Wing Yi posted online with a photo, "How are you? Today is very sad." Choy Yat Kit also posted a photo of Grasshoppers with Sister Mui. "15 years in the brink of an eye, but we never stop missing you!" Hui Ch On shared an old photo with Sister Mui and friends. "Most recently I read an article that perfectly expressed what I want to say! There is no past or people you can't let go, only past and memories that you are unwilling to let go. What life gives us is either difficulties or growth. We learn to lift the heavy like it is light as we completely let go of the past that we once have no way of letting go of. I wish you bright, direct, expression from the heart, with gains, losses and determination, to be able to cry, to laugh and to have as much joy as possible." * (2018/12/30) Famous director Ringo Lam Lan Tung yesterday was found dead at his home. The "ON FIRE" trilogy director won the Hong Kong Film Award Best Director with CITY ON FIRE (LUNG FU FUNG WON). The news of his sudden passing shocked show business. Roy Cheung Yiu Yeung who saw Director Lam as his mentor broke down after hearing the news. Friend Eddie Cheung Siu Fai also was unable to believe that it was real. According to the police, a 63 year old man with the last name Lam was found dead at a home on Ma On Shan's Sai Sha Road. The police received a call from Lam's wife, citing that Lam Lan Tung collapsed in bed. When medical personnel arrived his death was confirmed. After initial investigation nothing suspicious was found and the cause of death would have to wait until the autopsy report. The hearse took away the body last night around 7PM. His wife and son also saw the hearse off. Reportedly Lam Lan Tung has always had stomach illness. Recently he caught the flu but did not see a doctor, as he was treated it with medication. Supposedly after he got up yesterday morning, he returned to bed after breakfast. Around 4PM his wife realized that he was still in bed. When she went to the bed to wake him, she realized that he was unconscious and contacted the police. His neighbor said that he greeted him days ago and the news was very surprising. Cheung Yiu Yeung broke down when interviewed. "What! No way! I hope this isn't true. (When was the last time you saw him?) Two years ago at (Johnnie) To Kei Fung's dinner. He made him a star singlehandedly, which I would always remember in this lifetime. I always want to find a chance to thank him, but I was never able to." Cheung Yiu Yeung worked with Lam Lan Tung on films PRISON ON FIRE, CITY ON FIRE and SCHOOL ON FIRE, successfully making a name for him. Cheung Siu Fai was speechless when he heard the news. "I really couldn't accept it. It's too sudden. He can be said as my training class elder." Earlier he worked together on the film SKY ON FIRE (CHUNG TIN FOR). Originally they wanted to work together again but their schedules conflicted. He also said that originally they tried to meet for dinner in March but again their schedules conflicted. "I regret very much that I wasn't able to have that dinner with him. He truly was a very nice guy, he was so healthy. I am really going to miss him!" Lam Lan Tung's TVB training class classmates Chow Yun Fat and Johnnie To Kei Fung were as close as brothers. Thus when they heard the news their mood was particularly heavy and was unable to recover at once. Having known Lam Lan Tung for over 40 years, Simon Yam Tat Wa after days of working on a film rested for a few hours in the afternoon. He never expected to receive the tragic news when he got up. "We always meet and have dinner when we are in Hong Kong. When such a good friend suddenly passed away, I am very upset. My heart really hurts, I really don't know how to describe it. I shed tears. Friendship like this I believe is rare in a lifetime! I just got off the phone with his wife. (How was she?) Heartbroken, but she was OK emotionally. (When did you see Director Lam last?) Two months ago I saw his in the recording studio, at the time we talked about life when we chatted. (Would you help with the funeral?) I definitely would, I would do my best." Lam Lan Tung excelled in action films. His 2014 film WILD CITY starred Louis Koo Tin Lok, Shawn Yue Man Lok and Joseph Chang. Because Director Lam was rather demanding, he asked for real blades and both Yue Man Lok and Koo Tin Lok were hurt during the shoot. He also went to work in the U.S. in 1996. His first Hollywood film was the action film MAXIMUM RISK, which starred Jean-Claude Van Damme. They worked together again several times after, including REPLICANT and IN HELL. In addition, he said in an earlier interview that in the film world he was god, able to control everything; but in real life he was unable to control life and death. He posted, "I would like to extend my condolences to his family, friends and loved ones." Director Dante Lam Chiu Yin said, "Why was it so sudden? He was my idol. The final school massacre scene in THE STOOL PIGEON was my salute to his SCHOOL ON FIRE. At the time I told (Nick) Cheung Ka Fai that I really like Lam Lan Tung. Ka Fai helped me arrange a meeting with him. I always tell people, I want to work with him. Now I really won't get a chance to, which is very regrettable." Yue Man Lok posted a black and white photo of Lam Lan Tung on social media. "Too sudden, really it's too sudden......I don't know how to react. Director have a safe journey, I will always love you, respect you......" The 2016 film SKY ON FIRE became Lam Lan Tung's final film. Director Lam's lead actor Daniel Wu (Ng Yin Cho) posted their photo on social media and praised him for his many classic films like CITY ON FIRE and PRISON ON FIRE. As a representative of the Hong Kong 80's and 90's New Wave he promoted Hong Kong films to international renown. "We have lost a true film master. Rest in Peace! We will carry on your will!" Louis Koo Tin Lok remembered on social media, "On the way home I got the news of director Lam Lan Tung's passing. Emotionally I didn't want this to be true, but after seeing many filmmakers' eulogies I have to accept it. I worked with Director Lam in as early as 1998, unknowingly it has already been 20 years. In recent years we also made WILD CITY and he remained very demanding on himself, a creator who would always challenge himself. He has always taught me a lot, a good colleague who was both a teacher and a friend. I would always miss him." Having worked with Lam Lan Tung on HOUSE OF THE DAMNED (SI HEI BIK YUN) and LOOKING FOR MISTER PERFECT (KEI FUNG DIK SAU), Chapman To Man Chak was heartbroken and remembered him online. He said that Lam Lan Tung deeply influenced his journey as a director. "I would always remember what you said to me on the set, how to be able to make a movie good." Wayne Lai Yiu Cheung said, "I have quite an impression of him because over a decade ago I worked on his VICTIM (MUK LO HUNG GUONG), at the time we were all kids. We didn't get to go out and make movies too often. He taught me a lot, back then he appreciated and encouraged me. Over a year ago he asked me to work on SKY ON FIRE. Although it wasn't any major role, he remembered me to ask me to guest star. To me it was a huge encouragement." Wong Jing months ago had dinner with Lam Lan Tung. At the time he looked fine and very healthy. Wong Jing said, "No way, I would die before he would. However life is unexpected after 60. He and I are too familiar, I didn't believe the news when I heard it. I am very saddened!" Lam Lan Tung and To Kei Fung were both once Wong Tin Lam's disciples. Two nights ago Wong Tin Lam's Wong Jing posted on social media. "Ah Tung's passing was too sudden, my heartbreak couldn't come fast enough as only wave after wave of memories flooded in. He was Father's second disciple. When we met we were 20, but my impression of him felt much older -- like a big brother. Later I realized that he just matured early. I wrote the first show after he was promoted to head writer. Later because he rose to fame with the ON FIRE series he went to Hollywood. When he came back we even properly worked together on FULL ALERT. Have a safe journey, we will catch up again." Alan Tam Wing Lun starred in Lam Lan Tung's film directing debut ESPRIT D'AMOUR (YUM YEUNG CHOR) in 1983, later they worked together on THE OTHER SIDE OF GENTLEMAN (GWUN JI HO KAU). "What Ah Tung wanted was different from other directors. He was more explosive, his requests more alternative, more special. Even for an ordinary shot, he wanted to force and force you into another level in order to meet his demand. He was a rather demanding director. I worked with him on several films, and felt that he wasn't a simple director. He had his own style." "I heard that he was planning a movie. At our last dinner, a group of us Old Mak (Karl Maka), (Dean) Shek Tin, (Raymond) Wong Pak Ming, Cheung Ngai Ga (Sylvia Chang), Shi Nansun all came. We would occasionally get together for dinner, they would more so. The last time I saw him he was fine, he was in great spirits so it was very regrettable. It is a loss to the film industry." Lam Lan Tung discovered Maria Cordero at a night spot and asked her to perform the theme song of CITY ON FIRE and PRISON ON FIRE, making her an overnight success and changed her destiny. She responded, "I still can't accept it. Without him I wouldn't be here today. Each time I saw him I would call him benefactor. I would always run into him Sabah. He told me that he was always planting vegetable and was very healthy. The last time I ran into him in Tsim Sha Tsui, I loudly called out 'Benefactor' and he called me crazy again! When I heard the news, I couldn't accept it right away. He truly was talented and a nice guy there couldn't be more of, my condolences to his family!" Director Lam Lan Tung excelled in action films, among them the ON FIRE trilogy CITY ON FIRE, PRISON ON FIRE and SCHOOL ON FIRE were the best known. In 1987 with CITY he won the Hong Kong Film Award Best Director, lead actor Chow Yun Fat also won Best Actor. In 1997, Lam Lan Tung made FULL ALERT (GO DOH GAI BEI) and brought his career to new heights. In 2007 he worked with directors Tsui Hark and Johnnie To Kei Fung on TRIANGLE (TEET SAM GOK). In 2014 he directed WILD CITY with Koo Tin Lok, Yue Man Lok, Joseph Chang and Tong Liya. Yue Man Lok revealed that Lam Lan Tung for realism almost permitted actors to fight with real blades, which stunned Yue Man Lok! In addition, the prop currency that was used for WILD CITY due to its high level of realism led to charges for prop team member Law Yun Lam and prop master Cheung Wai Chuen. Luckily the verdict were overturned. His 2016 film SKY ON FIRE became his final work. Lam Lan Tung's family originated from Chaozhou, Guangdong. In 1973 after graduating from Saint Peter Secondary School he joined the TVB third artist training class and was a classmate of Chow Yun Fat and Ng Man Tat. In 1974 he was a production assistant, in 1976 he was promoted to head writer. In 1978 he joined CTV and made the film GUP SIN FUNG. Later he emigrated to Canada and studied film at York University. years ago he made countless films, including TWIN DRAGONS, BURNING PARADISE, THE ADVENTURERS, FULL ALERT and THE SUSPECT (GIK DOH CHUNG FAN). * (2018/12/30) Anthony Wong Chau Sun's mother Wong Chuen Yee passed away from illness earlier at the age of 87. Yesterday services were held at the Hong Kong Funeral Parlor and the funeral will take place today. The burial will take place a the Cape Collinson cemetery. Dressed in black, Wong Chau Sun arrived a 3:50PM. His wife and younger son followed later. The hall was decorated in a simple and clean manner. Under Mama Wong's photo was Chau Sun and his wife's pink heart floral arrangement and floral arrangements from grandsons. Chau Sun did not want to trouble his friends so he did not notify anyone. Yet many industry insiders still sent floral arrangements. They included Andy Lau Tak Wa, Sean Lau Ching Wan, Edison Chen Koon Hei, Hins Cheung King Hin, Mo Chun Fai, Alex Fong Chung Shun and Herman Yau Lai To. Chau Sun took the chance to thank them for their thoughtfulness. The ceremony was Taoist. Chau Sun said, "I didn't want it to be too quiet and upset myself, friends and family, so I found something to make some noise." Chau Sun said that his younger son did not deliberately return from Canada for the funeral. Before Grandma passed away he already decided to return to Hong Kong for Christmas. Chau Sun said, "I have been busy with taking care of everything, I haven't had the time to settle down. The viewing was very hard though. (Did a lot of memories come back?) Of course. (What about grave goods?) I packed some clothes. Mama loved red and green. Originally she had a headband, but her head shrank and it didn't fit. I wanted to make it smaller but it broke. Maybe she didn't like to wear headbands." He revealed his half brother in Australia yesterday also sent his condolences over text. * (2018/12/30) This year's second Hong Kong music report card the Metro Radio Hit Awards 2018 took place last night at the Convention Center. Last night after 5 songs, Wa Jai tearfully said to the audience, "The doctor suggested for me to not to sing, but I really am reluctant. I don't want everyone to hear my voice like this for the whole concert, but there's nothing I can do. So I will finish this song (IF ONE DAY) and then stop! I will make up for this later, I hope to try my best to finish this song and also hope that you would sing along with me. I have to apologize to everyone, thank you, please give yourselves one more round of applause!" Then he sang the last verse, put his hands together and bowed to the audience. Wa Jai's wife and daughter last night were present last night and the organizer would announce the arrangements as soon as possible. * (2018/12/29) Anita Mui Yim Fong passed away on December 30th, 2003. 15 years later, a group of loyal fans still kept her in their hearts. To commemorate the 15th anniversary of Sister Mui's passing, Mui Nation members raised fund for an exhibit, which would take place from the 29th to the 31st at the Running Horse Lantern Media Ltd., 204 Prince Edward Road West 2nd floor. Admission would be free. The exhibit would include many rare and extinct classic collection; the space would be divided into 4 areas, like Sister Mui's personally autographed vinyl albums, CDs and posters. The collection came from around the world. Also on display were many magazines, newspaper clippings, post cards, film stills, concert tickets, one of which was from 30 years ago! The selfie area had a giant background of Duddell Street (also known as the Gas Lamp Street) at Central, where Sister Mui shot her DREAM COMPANION music video. A 1:1 scale cardboard display of Sister Mui was set up for fans to take selfies with. An area would be set up for photo sales as well, different photos of the idol would be available. Each would only cost HK$ 10. The proceeds w would be donated to charity to continue Sister Mui's charitable spirit. The most special was 4 Yes! flash card vending machines, where fans would be able to bring back their 1990 star chasing nostalgia with flash cards. 15 sets would be available, some of which would be making their debut. Mui Nation president Checkers has been a fan of Sister Mui for years. To remember their idol, loyal fans like her not only raised fund to make the film DEAREST ANITA but also planned this exhibit for months. She described this exhibit would be different from before. "Because of Mui fans new and old, their age ranges across different eras and some have never seen Sister Mui in person. So this time we hope to be able to have an interactive exhibit for everyone to relive their memories over the years. They can also take selfies, buy flash cards and photos." Alvina Kong Yan Yin volunteered her voice for DEAREST ANITA, which she saw as a gift to Sister Mui. Yan Yan recalled that she got into show business because of Sister Mui. She was a fan. At Form 4 a classmate had tickets to JADE SOLID GOLD in the same row as Sister Mui, Leslie Cheung Kwok Wing and Danny Chan Pak Keung. During commercial she ran to take their photos but fell right in front of Sister Mui. She remembered at the time Sister Mui told her not to kneel and she got a photo with her. She never thought about becoming a star, but she learned from watching K100 that Sister Mui would be a judge for the New Talent contest. Thus she spent HK$ 80 to apply with friends. Actually she wanted to see Sister Mui and ask her for an autograph and photo. She never expected to get into show business that way. Yan Yan often impersonated Mui Yim Fong because her voice and appearance was very close. She said that Sister Mui's songs were very hard to sing, but after years of performing she was very confident that now she was no longer at her ENJOY YOURSELF TONIGHT quality. Even her live performance would surprise the audience. To her this was like a gift from Sister Mui. At the 10th anniversary of Sister Mui's passing, Yan Yan was invited to perform at a memorial show in Vancouver. She also had the opportunity to provide her voice to DEAREST ANITA at the 15th anniversary. She said, "I am not a voice actor. Chi Wai (Eric Tsang) contacted me and suggested for me to watch the film before deciding on whether to take this job. I was moved and agreed. I remembered at the recording studio, when I said the first line I heard everyone screamed before me." After the job she decided not to take a salary, as it was a gift from her to Sister Mui. * (2018/12/29) Don Li Yat Long yesterday appeared on a Commercial Radio program. He earlier wrote, directed and starred in the film SAR, which won the 2nd Chinese Korean International Film Festival new director award. Don humbly said, "I never thought about winning an award, I can only say that the Koreans like this type of subject. After the award I was excited for a week, then very quickly I returned to reality and continued to work." After the award Don was approached to direct a novel adaptation by a Korean company. Don said, "I read 12 novels in a month and chose one of them. We are in the negotiation stages right now. (Did you get a raise?) Definitely not, it can be adjusted and would anyone approach me then? For now I haven't had any actual reward, but I am happy about the award. The price is secondary, the most important is being able to make a movie I like." Currently he was working on post production for a kung fu film he directed. Earlier Don's female partner swindled HK$ 2.3 million from him. He revealed that the police was investigating. Everyday he has been waiting for good news. Did he have any financial problem? He said, "Luckily friends helped me and found jobs for me, earlier I was half retired, now my workload increased. I have no problem." * (2018/12/29) The Clifton Ko Chi Sum and Leung Pak Ho directed film DEAREST ANITA......has already attracted the attention from countless fans before its release since it was based on the real story between Anita Mui Yim Fong and her fans and Ko Chi Sum's 14th Chinese American Film Festival Best Director Award. DEAREST ANITA arranged for several advanced screenings and the audience response was rather enthusiastic, which made Ko Chi Sum very happy. One of the three Cinema City giants, Karl Maka, praised the film. "This film wasn't my cup of tea, but after watching it I was very surprised. Everyone did very well. I never expected the film's new actor Wong Wing Kit to be able to act so well. As for the director, this film was very difficult but was able to keep me watching it. Ko Chi Sum and Leung Pak Ho are very 'talented'." Olivia Cheng Man Nga also had nothing but praised for he film. She said that she was able to relate to this film in three ways. The first was Mui Yim Fong's collection of gifts from fans. After 40 years in the business she still have gifts from fans today. She like Ah Mui cherished her fans. The second was feeling that being able to take photos with fans was her own fortune; the third was sensing the love and support from friends and classmates, as interpersonal relationships were able to stand the test of time. * (2018/12/28) The Hong Kong Motion Pictures Industry Association and the Hong Kong Theater Association's Hong Kong Box Office Limited yesterday announced Hong Kong's Christmas box office numbers between December 24th and 26th 2018. The total box office over the three days reached HK$ 40,838,773, an increase of 24.65% from the same period last year. AQUAMAN over 3 days made HK$ 17,827,606 to become the Christmas slot film king and accumulated over HK$ 39.06 million. In second place was the animated film RALPH BREAKS THE INTERNET, over 3 days it made HK$ 9,612,401 and accumulated over HK$ 21.95 million. In third place was the Hong Kong film MASTER Z: THE IP MAN LEGACY (IP MAN OI JUEN: CHEUNG TIN CHI), which over 3 days made HK$ 3,579,552 and accumulated over HK$ 7.43 million. * (2018/12/28) The Yuen Woo Ping (Lord Eight) directed, Raymond Wong Pak Ming, Donnie Yen Chi Tan produced, Max Zhang Jin, Dave Bautista, Michelle Yeoh (Yeung Chi King), Tony Jaa, Kevin Cheng Ka Wing, Chrissie Chau Sau Na, Shi Yanneng, Patrick Tam Yiu Man and Ada Liu Yan starred kung fu epic MASTER Z: THE IP MAN LEGACY (IP MAN OI JUEN: CHEUNG TIN CHI) has had good word of mouth since its opening on the 20th. Facing strong Christmas film competition, MASTER Z: THE IP MAN LEGACY made over HK$ 7.6 million in a week. The audience found Zhang Jin's street sign fight memorable. For each action design to be unique, Lord eight not only wanted actors to fight on the ground but also used the set to design the action. Zhang Jin despite his fear of heights had to jump and fight on the 10 meter tall neon lights! Eight months ahead of the street sign, Lord Eight and the team already began preparing to avoid using computer graphics. They shot completely on actual location to elevate the realism. The "flying acrobat" Zhang Jin had a fear of heights. When he told Lord Eight, Lord Eight asked him what was there to be afraid of? In the end he toughed t out as he forcefully took every step on the narrow sign. Zhang Jin said, This scene had three units and dozens of people on the wire. Action coordination with wire was even tougher than without. Sometimes with a lack of force, you couldn't jump accurately and would have bumps and bruises; although it was difficult, the feeling of completing the shoot was very gratifying." Aside from hardcore action the film also had a balance of the power and grace. Zhang Jin and Yeung Chin King's glass pushing in a bar left the audience in awe. The less than a minute long scene took two days to shoot. Lord Eight explained that this scene was Zhang Jin and Yeung Chi King's first meeting. He hoped that they would through the wine glass pushing and pulling process without spilling a drop to demonstrate their kung fu abilities. "I don't want to have just dialogue, so I used the bar set to design this action." Yeung Chi King also said that this scene tested for soft spots. She was testing Zhang Jin and did not truly want to fight with him. [ BLAH OF THE WEEK ] Columns, Reviews, Interviews 1. TA KUNG PAO, DECEMBER 27 2018, EAST AND WEST FILM MASTER Z: IP MAN LEGACY: AS LONG AS YOU WIN In Hong Kong kung fu film of the 70s and 80s, occasionally actual historical figure would be protagonists. Today, the Yuen Woo Ping directed new film MASTER Z: IP MAN LEGACY (IP MAN OI JUEN: CHEUNG TIN CHI) uses a fictitious character as its lead. - HUNG KWONG Among the protagonists of the 70s and 80s Hong Kong kung fu films, the best known naturally was Huo Yuanqi who died in 1910. Over the years his story has been continuously adapted for the stage. Even further, filmmakers created Huo Yuanqi's disciples and developed the legend further. The most famous among them of course was Chen Zhen, Bruce Lee's character in his claim to fame FIST OF FURY. After the Republic, such martial art legendary figures were no longer valued. Few became protagonists in literature or even film and television products. After the 21st century, filmmakers finally adapted the Wing Chun grandmaster Ip Man for the silver screen. From Wilson Yip Wai Shun, Wong Kar Wai to Herman Yau Lai To, several directors adapted his story from youth to old age. The Yuen Woo Ping directed new film MASTER Z: IP MAN LEGACY used a fictional related character as its protagonist. Master Sparring Series Cheung Tin Chi was the Wing Chun master who challenged Ip Man in the film IP MAN 3. He was not the real villain, but an opponent who appreciated Ip Man and vice versa. This Max Zhang Jin played character design was successful, thus came MASTER Z: IP MAN LEGACY. The story began after Cheung Tin Chi's closed door duel defeat at the hands of Ip Man. Retired from martial arts, Cheung Tin Chi gave up his "professional fighter" identity and chose to be an ordinary person. He opened up a store and lived with his son. Yet trouble would always find him. Cheung Tin Chi while helping singer Julia, who was being chased, insulted a young mob boss. Cheung's home was burnt down and he could only seek help from Julia's brother Chiu Kam Fu. He was swept into mob business anew......the entire film put the reluctant Cheung Tin Chi in sparring duels with masters like Chiu Kam Fu, the mob's female boss and the behind the scene villain. Among them the most eye catching master was the Michelle Yeoh (Yeung Chi King) played female mob boss, as a mob figure who wanted to become legitimized she was not accepted by the upper crust bu also betrayed by her biological brother. She was in crossroads. As the story progressed, she gradually showed her skills until the climatic fight. Few actresses would have enough experience and skill to play this character. Yeung Chi King's performance was able to hold her own. This was also another collaboration between her and director Yuen Woo Ping after CROUCHING TIGER HIDDEN DRAGON: SWORD OF DESTINY. How Can Fist Fight Guns Early Republic/modern action films would always have to face a question: is the fist and the bullet faster? Filmmakers can choose to fight speed with speed, for the gun using character to choose to resolve the problem with punches and kicks. Speed is unimportant, as long as the fight is entertaining. The "smarter" way is to design a variety of martial art/weapons to fend off guns. MASTER Z: IP MAN LEGACY chose the "smarter" way. Cheung Tin Chi more than once was asked or challenged with the question of whether the fist or the bullet was faster. Of course, this type of "problem" was more useful for making the fight design richer so the lead would not win too easily over villains. Yet when he fought the "boss", he still had to rely on punches and kicks to solve the problem, whether the villain was Chinese, Black or foreigner. The film had some very traditional methods, the tradition that started with the Huo Yuanqi films. Villains were all foreigners. This time the villain appeared as a charitable donor. Davidson was a restaurant owner who secretly was running a drug business. At the same time, this film also made the Chinese and foreign conflict as one of the hints. Foreigners who appeared in the film (mostly police) were almost all villains. Among non Chinese important character, only the Tony Jaa played assassin was considered a half a "positive figure". The entire film finished the story of Cheung Tin Chi's wish and failure to be an ordinary person with this character's conscience and some exaggerated performance. However, the character was simple and one dimensional. Actually he did not affect this film too much. In the end, this was an action film. It stressed exciting fights and stimulating action. All the drama in between actually was to incense audience emotions so everyone would get into the fights. Yet in this film, the lead wanted to retreat from the martial art world. The female mob boss who was the most able to hold down the fort was also determined to turn her business legitimate. Villains' bad deeds were minor, which made getting into the film very hard. Perhaps as Cheung Tin Chi said in the film, "I am not here to be the hero, I am here to pummel you!" This film's focus was how to "pummel someone". Yet after several IP MAN films and all the punching and kicking inside studio sets, this writer truly has been exhausted. 2. TA KUNG PAO, DECEMBER 27 2018, THE WEEK IN FILM MARVEL THIS YEAR EARNS NONSTOP Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. As 2018 is about to come to an end, last week this writer has begun initial summation of this year's box office. The top ten for the year's box office is without a single Chinese film. Although the performance could not compare to TRAIN TO BUSAN, the Korean film that was able to reach second place two years ago, both films together made over HK$ 100 million at the box office. In first place was the Marvel blockbuster AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR. This year has been a year of great victory for Marvel heroes. Among the top ten, four are Marvel blockbusters. Aside from INFINITY WAR, BLACK PANTHER coming in fourth, ANT-MAN AND THE WASP and DEADPOOL 2 come in sixth and seventh place; JURASSIC WORLD: FALLEN KINGDOM and the animated blockbuster INCREDIBLES 2 grab second and third place; the Tom Cruise film series MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE - FALLOUT comes in fifth place; in tenth place is Steven Spielberg directed REDAY PLAYER ONE. Eighteen years ago, the Jim Carrey starred HOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMAS was released. The latest animated version THE GRINCH is produced by Illumination, known for making DESPICABLE ME. The film already opened in the U.S. earlier this month, with strong competition it can only reach first place in its opening week. As a Christmas film, last year in the U.S. it still reached sixth place at the box office with US$ 253.58 million. BUMBLEEBEE is a TRANSFORMERS spinoff, the story returned to 1987 and told the TRANSFORMERS story anew. This film opened in the U.S. last week and came in third. In addition the famous Korean director Lee Chong-Dong's adaptation of Japanese novelist Haruki Murakami's short novel BARN BURNING, this year's Cannes Film Festival surprise BURNING will open in Hong Kong this week. TA KUNG PAO, DECEMBER 27 2018, LIGHT SHADOW PATH FILM IS NOT A RETAIL BUSINESS A certain film and television store announced its closing, most felt that with fewer and fewer people buying film and television product or hard copies retail store was no longer popular. Actually, those ideas already had conclusions before the last time the brand was sold. The problem was that the buyer thought with slight change of sales strategy it could add in other products and turn the tides. It entered the business when its own business was not retail. Unless the company had unique concept and actual number support, if it only had a sudden idea because it bought a business the company would have no idea that it repeated its predecessor's road to failure. The future could be known without asking. Unfortunately, most thought that they were geniuses. They made many ideas that they thought were great without understanding the market, most film industry outsiders were like that. An industry insider who was originally a manager due to poor business wanted to become a film producer. He criticized a certain company for not signing top directors to long contracts, thus they moved on to greener pastures. People who understood the facts knew that the director did not want to be tied down to a long contract, thus he worked for different companies. What this person did not understand was, "without research or study you have no right to speak". He also further showed his manager nature and said that he would sign a group of new directors, like a certain successful producers he would cultivate them so they would be able to make good films. He did not understand that the successful producer had years of creative experience and was a filmmaker with ideals and goals. He was not a sudden "producer" due to difficulty with development in his own business. Their abilities were rather distant. Some people saw the Mainland's several hundred million RMB big productions making a billion at the box office, thus they suggested making big gambles. They did not know that some several hundred million films only made below cost or several tens of millions at the box office. Seeing the success of some authentic Mainland comedy films, a certain filmmaker pointed out that actually they imitated past Hong Kong films or even ENJOY YOURSELF TONIGHT. These people did not understand that "History does not repeat itself, but it rhymes." Many people do not understand that the film market now is very transparent. Most no company would invest in a movie alone unless it by chance cannot find a collaborator. If a certain company has a film project, a director and actors and no one is willing to invest, it proves that the market is not optimistic. For the film to succeed it has to be a "surprise hit". In business no one can ask for a "surprise hit" every time. If it is an odd subject, even just a title, investors would stay far away from it. Thus, the film market's root is still story. How to find a good story is more important than singing which director or actor, because film is a creative industry and not a retail business. - TIN LIK [ In Production Now/Soon ] Can : Gum Doh Lit : Golden Cty d.
