Alex Fong Chung Shun and his wife Hoyan Mak, Fiona Sit Hoi Kei attended. Fiona said about Siu Bo's interest in making a 2 YOUNG (JO SHOOK) sequel, "I always tell him to make 2 YOUNG 2. I tell him not to retire too soon, at least wait until after working with me again." She also revealed her interest in directing. "I have been writing scripts too. I want to make a movie. I have asked Siu Bo whether he would help with my first movie, he promised me earlier. I will direct, but I can't talk about it yet. I have to wait until I am not as busy with work, maybe after 2 YOUNG 2 first." Has she asked Jaycee Chan (Fong Cho Ming) about his schedule? She said, "I don't know about his schedule, let me convince the director first." * (2016/11/30) Cherry Ngan Cheuk Ling in the new film CHERRY RETURNS (NA NIN HA TIN NE HUI LIU NA LUI) played a tragic girl who was kidnapped in the U.S. held captive for 12 years and was sexually violated. She in order to grasp her character not only read related books for research but also even deliberately locked herself in a small room alone and experienced the feeling of being held captive. Playing a cop n the film, Gordon Lam Ka Tung could not help but said, "Before working she often hid, when the director yelled action we had no idea where she was. She truly was very hard to find." Having always played happy and energetic young character, Ngan Cheuk Ling agreed that this time indeed was a very rare experience. She said, "Not many directors would help you with a breakthrough. Most would feel you are a type based on your previous image. Now I can explore another route, I hope everyone can see I have even more space for performance." Ka Tung also praised Ngan Cheuk Ling's performance in the film as OK and stated that he began to notice her work since the film THE WAY WE DANCE (KONG MO PAI). He felt that she has always had changes and put an effort into her work. He said, "Of course I noticed, I have to stock up while the price is low. What would I do when her price goes up!" * (2016/11/30) Adrian Wong Chi Ching, Hinson Chou Tsz Yeung, Xanadu Ng Yoyo, Lau Shek Yin yesterday attended an entertainment company opening celebration. Chi Chng looked much slimmer. She revealed that she has lost ten pounds since last year. "Mainly I have been working on (Johnnie) To Kei Fung's movies the last year or two. Mainland food was greasier and To Sir constantly took us to eat nonstop, finally I went from petite to medium. Now I have already quit late night snack, and Mommy is always forcing me to eat healthy, so I am health and thinner." Chou Tsz Yeung's TVB contract ended more than half a year ago. He has been focusing on making three movies in the Mainland. Lately he returned to Hong Kong to make DRAGON TATTOO (GAU LUNG BUK BAI). He admitted that he has made a lot in the past half a year. Since TVB salary was limited, now he is making three or four times more. * (2016/11/30) Tseung Kwan O Star Cinema earlier held a Star Academy forum and invited HAPPINESS (HUNG WON SI NGOR)'s Susan Shaw Yam Yam, Carlos Chan Ka Lok and director Law Yiu Fai to share their film creative experience and views on Hong Kong films. Domestic Hong Kong films today might not be as glorious as the 80s and the 90s, but "guts" was young people's greatest asset. Law Yiu Fai worked as a screen writer for many years, but HAPPINESS was his directing debut; the 30 year old Ka Lok has been in the business for a decade, but this was his first true "lead" role. On the other hand, Shaw Yam Yam has been in the business for over 50 years and won the Hong Kong Film Awards twice. She gladly passed on her profession and helped young people fulfilled their film dream. Two generations put together courage and experience to fight for domestic films together. Law Yiu Fai revealed that when he was a screen writer he mainly wrote little romantic films, action films and comedy films. However when he had the chance to direct, he according to his own interest chose the heavier in drama social subject. He hoped to bring up different social topics through the film and wake up the Hong Kong audience's concern for the society, especially the groups on the fringe. "Making a dramatic subject is very difficult. Very few companies were willing to invest. However I hope to make some movies that can touch people's hearts, not just meeting the film companies' (demands)." Sister Yam Yam joked that Director Law was very "deranged". "New directors in general would choose to make commercial films to make money for the boss and fight for the next job opportunity for themselves. They wouldn't take risk to make a dramatic film." She showed her appreciation for Director Law's fearless youth sentiment. Ka Lok has been in the business for 10 years and experienced all the good and the bad the business had to offer. He admitted that actors looked glorious but actually made very little. He once thought about quitting. "Luckily I had my family's support, giving me a chance to learn and finally I got through it." Speaking of his recent Chinese Young Generation Film Forum New Actor award, he sad that he was very encouraged. "I am not too well known in the Mainland. The award proved that the jury truly recognized my acting." He continued, "Actually taking the role in HAPPINESS was like destiny. With my stiff acting ten years ago I definitely wouldn't be able to play it well. Because this character was an ordinary person, too much acting would give people the impression of being fake and superficial. However I also had to explore this character's touching side." He gave special thanks to the elders' advice that he benefit a lot from. "When I made HAPPINESS, from the start I was very tense in my rehearsals with Sister Siu Hung (Kara Wai). Although I couldn't be more familiar wt the script, because she sometimes liked to change the script she made it even more life like. Sometimes I couldn't catch up. In one scene, by the second or third take the director accepted it. Only she was not satisfied and personally performed it one more time. Very few elders would be willing to do this. The elders' persistence and passion for film instead opened up my mind, as I was able to let go of any burden and naturally performed. I still remember earlier while I worked on a ghost film in Thailand, Sister Siu Hung was in it as well. All of us young actors would watch on the monitor and even directly asked her for advice." As the event neared its end, Director Law asked everyone to support Hong Kong film more. "Many young directors and actors have a lot of heart. They want to give the Hong Kong film label a real good shine." Sister Yam Yam said, "Over 80 new directors applied for the Golden Horse Award. If they don't support them, they won't even get a turn if they drive taxis!" Finally, Director Law felt that more creator films would be the way out of new directors and Hong Kong films. "The Golden Horse Award Best New Director, TRIVISA (SHU DAI JIU FUNG)'s directors are all creator directors. This type of movies can help Hong Kong break out internationally." * (2016/11/29) Yesterday Shu Qi attended a skin care production event with Jennifer Tse Ting Ting, Janet Ma Sze Wai and Stephanie Au Hoi Shun. Shu Qi was asked if she was used to being called Mrs. Fung. She sad, "When I hear people call me Mrs., I feel very old." Earlier when Shu Q attended the Golden Horse Award, host Matilda Tao revealed her pregnancy news. Later Shu Qi denied it. The next day when she returned from Taiwan she took off when the media tried to interview her. Did she run to prove that she was not pregnant? Shu Qi said, "No, I just didn't know so many reporters were waiting. When I came out I was surprised. I was afraid that I would affect other travelers, and I didn't expect a little joke would cause such a big storm." Matilda Tao's joke led to online criticism, Shu Qi said that they both felt sorry. However life should be happier and not criticizing. Shu Qi also said that she knew that everyone cared whether she was with child or not, but she felt that parenthood was a blessed gift from Heaven. "People are always asking me if I am having a baby, the Chinese can't mention it before the three months; secondly lying is bad too, so if anyone suspects me please don't ask me, thank you." She said that her health has been poor for the past 20 some years, if she was to have a baby she must properly maintain it. Speaking of her plans next year, Shu Q stated that she really wanted to retire. "However I haven't decided yet. (Have you thought about what you would want to do after retirement?) I would focus on having children." She will spend Christmas with her husband at a candlelit dinner. Tse Ting Ting said that she just went to Shanghai for the Jingle Ma Chor Sing directed PARIS RAIDERS (AU JAU GUNG LEUK), which will shoot until the end of this year. She had no idea whether she will spend Christmas. She also said that both her father Patrick Tse Yin and brother Nicholas Tse Ting Fung have worked with Ma Chor Sing. Ma Chor Sing always told her about Tse Yin in his youth, like how mischievous her father was. Ting Ting said, "Grandma said that Papa was very mischievous when he was little. He often went out to play and missed dinner. He had to catch cockroaches and roast him for food. I asked him now if he would have the guts to eat them again, he said no." * (2016/11/29) Nicholas Tse Ting Fung, Jung Yong-Hwa, Bai Bing, Tiffany Tang Yan, Du Haitao starred and Ge You guest starred Lunar New Year film COOK UP A STORM (FUNG MEI GONG WU ji KUET JIN SIK SUN) yesterday held its Beijing press conference. The trailer also premiered at the event. Ting Fung and Jung Yong-Hwa's god of cooking duel was very passionate, as the Lunar New Year atmosphere was filled with Hong Kong film nostalgia. Speaking of COOK UP A STORM, director Raymond Yip Wai Man said, "The film's comedic elements and emotions made this film the Lunar New Year viewing choice with the most humanity." Producer Mani Fok Man Hei said about Ge You, "When he first got the script, Ge You liked it very much already. The common emotions between people in this story of 'tears within laughter' touched him." As for the film's subject, Ting Fung claimed to be a street stall's "dark faced little kitchen god". He said, "The cuisine in this film is very different, consisting many interpersonal feelings. Just as the trailer says, what we make is home cooking that the people like; the one goal of our cooking is hope that people would eat it happily." Ting Fung also mentioned that in the film he had an unusual father and son relationship that was similar to his own. Tang Yan pointed out that in the film she would interpret two different kinds of love with the two leading men. COOK UP A STORM would be a reunion for Ting Fung and Tang Yan since THE STORM WARRIORS (FUNG WON 2) eight years ago. She claimed to be a "little fan all along". "We didn't directly work together before. This time is different, I am with him the entire time. I can consider it a wish fulfilled." Du Haitao said that he could relate to the friendship in the film, especially the film's old neighborhood nostalgia and even some lost cuisine would brought back a lot of memories. The actors even revealed that "joy" connected the entire film as comedy stars of the North and the South would spend a happy new year with everyone. Ge You did not attend but Du Haitao and others recited his classic line. Ting Fung also changed from his "dark faced little kitchen god" arrogant character and held a bowl of giant plain noodles to pose for photos with the team. * (2016/11/28) Shawn Yue Man Lok and the fresh out of the oven Golden Horse Best Actress Zhou Dongyu two nights ago celebrated at the same spot. They were not afraid of gossip again. When Lok Jai saw Zhou Dongyu he immediately gave her a big hug. The intimate photo landed on the Weibo hot search chart. The 54 year old new Best Actor Fan Wei at the farewell party admitted that when he heard the presenter read his name, his first feeling was "my legs were shaking" as he struggled hard to get on stage. Fan Bingbing did not win Best Actress but boyfriend Li Chen said that his girlfriend was the Best Actress of his heart. Zhou Dongyu and Ma Sichun two nights ago both won Best Actress with SOUL MATE. They celebrated after the event and the Golden Horse award nominated MAD WORLD (YUT LIM MO MNG) was also celebrating at the same location. When Yue Man Lok saw Zhou Dongyu immediately gave her a huge hug. Yue Man Lok yesterday morning posted a photo with Zhou Dongyu and her Golden Horse Award. After the award ceremony, the new Best Actor Fan Wei attended the event farewell party and happily posed with his award. Fan Wei admitted that when he heard the presenter read his name, his first feeling was "my legs were shaking a little". He struggled to get on the stage. "I thought at my age I could probably tough it out." Originally he wanted to say something humorous during his speech but he just stood there and could not say anything. He only wanted to say thank you. Fan Wei after his victory immediately called his wife with the good news. The Taiwan audience was not familiar with him and thought his victory was a surprise. He asked, "Just because we aren't familiar it's a surprise?" He took the chance to introduce himself to the Taiwan audience. Fan Bingbing posted early in the morning online, "The director's victory made me very happy inside! Victories and defeats are common to soldiers, we will keep trying!" Boyfriend Li Chen posted, "No matter when and where you are, you are always the Best Actress of my heart." Hong Kong film TRIVISA (SHU DAI JIU FUNG) won two Golden Horse Awards in Best Film Editing and Best Original Screenplay. The winners were all surprised and felt that the victories were incredible. Johnnie To Kei Fung who did not feel well and left after the red carpet finally was happy to see the new blood's victories and attended the film company celebration. He showed his support to the younger generation and his kind fatherly side. * (2016/11/28) The Ringo Lam Lan Tung directed SKY ON FIRE (CHUNG TIN FOR) has already been released, Taiwan hunk Joseph Chang Hsiao-Chuan had fight scenes after fight scenes. He contributed to truck chases and a variety close contact action scenes, and they were all "real". This was already the second time that Chang Hsiao-Chuan worked with Lam Lan Tung, the first time was the 2015 WILD CITY (MAI SING), in which he played a vicious killer. This time in the film he played a truck driver who was protective of his sister. Chang Hsiao-Chuan said, "In one scene 'Big Wolf' Li Haitao and were fighting in a tunnel. Li Haitao had to hit me then ram me into a wall. We practiced it six times before, but because Ng Yin Cho (Daniel Wu)'s earlier injury we didn't dare to fight for real. No matter how we worked it didn't feel right. Director Lam showed us the playback on the monitor and said it was 'too fake'. He hoped that we would do it for real. Finally one scene was especially memorable for me, Haitao dragged me to ram the wall. When my head really hit the wall, I felt dizzy and really collapsed." Aside from the action scenes, Chang Hsiao-Chuan and Amber Kuo also had an ambiguous relationship that seemed to be there but was not. Earlier Chang Hsiao-Chuan announced his break up. The beyond cool Chang Hsiao-Chuan heard the reporters joked that many women were eyeing the newly single him like crouching tigers and finally flashed a smile. Did he have a chance with the also single Amber Kuo? Chang Hsiao-Chuan awkwardly smiled and said, "Actually dating has its advantages but being single has its too, since I am in no hurry to find someone and Mama has never rushed me to get married. As for Amber, after finishing the film we had no contact personally and felt nothing special." * (2016/11/27) The 53rd Golden Horse Awards took place last night in Taipei. This year SOUL MATE's Mainland actresses Zhou Dongyu and Ma Sichun both won Best Actress, Best Actor was MR. NO PROBLEM's Mainland actor Fan Wei. Best Director went to I AM NOT MADAME BOVARY's Feng Xiaogang. Best Feature Film was THE SUMMER IS GONE, which was also the big winner with three awards; Hong Kong film TRIVISA (SHU DAI JIU FUNG) received Best Film Editing and Best Original Screenplay awards. Elaine Jin (Kam Yin Ling) with MAD WORLD (YUT LIM MO MING) won Best Supporting Actress again after 22 years. When she was announced to be the winner, Eric Tsang Chi Wai immediately embraced her and helped her to the stage. Kam Ying Ling broke down and said, "I told myself not to be too emotional when I participate in the Golden Horse Awards, but that is really very hard." She also said that winning an award in her own place was a type of recognition. A lot happened over 22 years, as an actress she was very grateful for having many opportunities for her to work. She also lamented how difficult the journey has been. She said that she did not come from academia, and understood that she had to perform well to be able to have the next chance for work. Kam Yin Ling said that she never thought about winning. Because MAD WORLD was a Hong Kong film with HK$ 2 million production budget, she only worked for a day but she put a lot of effort into her performance. Chi Wai asked her to help. She also said that last year with PORT OF CALL (DAP HUET CHUM MU) she wanted to win but did not. With her past six nominations, twice she was the surprise winner. Best Supporting Actor Lin Po-Hung with the film CAFE NO. 6 defeated the pre race favorite Tsang Chi Wai. Lin Po-Hung held back his tears during his speech and was very emotional. He said that he has longed for the Golden Horse Award and promised to keep risking his life for each character. He would continue to passionately love film. After his victory Lin Po-Hung excitedly picked up the award, danced and jumped for photos. He revealed that backstage he broke down because he never thought that he would win. He really admired his fellow nominees who have acted longer than he has lived. When he passed by Chi Wai he really wanted to salute him, but before he could react Chi Wai already stood up and congratulated him. When Michael Hui Koon Man presented the Best New Performer award, host Matilda Tao asked if he was very confident about winning Best Actor. He joked that being the favorite might not necessarily be a good thing, like the U.S. Presidential Election and leaving the U.S. currency standard. Later he also sad that the last time he was nominated for the Golden Horse Award was already 38 years ago. At the time he thought he would have a lot of opportunities. He never expected the next time would be 38 years later. He sad, "In the past 38 years how have everyone been? A lot of your probably weren't even born yet." He presented the award to THE SUMMER IS GONE's 10 year old Mainland child star Kong Weiyi. Because he was not tall enough, the event brought him a chair. He thanked the Golden Horse Award jury and his mother. He also thanked Hui Koon Man for giving him the chance at fame because when he presented the award he said, "Today's new performer, tomorrow's big star!" When Fan Bingbing presented Best Sound Effects, Best Supporting Actor nominee and Taiwan artist Nadow joked that he was Taiwan's Wu Dalang. He brought out Binging, who after hearing his self introduction said, "But I am not Pan Jinlian (I AM NOT MADAME BOVARY's Chinese title)!" Bingbing won the 44th Golden Horse Best Supporting Actress with THE MATRIMONY. At the time due to work she was unable to attend. When she received her call she went crazy and was surprised that she still won despite not attending. Host Matilda Tao jokingly responded, "You just revealed a lot of secret rules!" During her performance, Stefanie Sun Yanzi performed many classic film songs. Yet not long into her performance she often went off key on her high notes due to the flu. On the other hand when Faye Wong's daughter Leah Dou performed the Best Original Film Song nominee (IT'S NOT A CRIME) IT'S JUST WHAT WE DO, she was fully focused, her singing and stage presence all had shades of Faye Wong as she danced with the microphone and played air guitar and air piano. Leah's grandmother clapped along in the audience in support. Peter Chan Ho Sun and Sandra Ng Kwan Yu talked about SOUL MATE not being released in Taiwan yet. Kwan Yu jokingly asked how many people actually saw the movie? Chan Ho Sun said, "No one, only 12 people (the jury) have seen it. If tonight (Derek) Tsang Kwok Cheung can directly win Best Director, then (the movie) can directly be released in Taiwan." When they presented Best Adapted Screenplay the film that Chan Ho Sun produced, SOUL MATE, did not win. Kwan Yu joked, "I told you to throw it (envelope) out." Chan Ho Sun said that her pronunciation was off and taught her again, Ng Kwan Yu kept making it sound like foul language. Later when they presented Best Supporting Actor, Kwan Yu joked that she wanted to just give it to Tsang Chi Wa and ripped up the envelope. Chan Ho Sun said, "That envelope you just ripped up was the result of the previous award." When Shu Qi presented the Outstanding Filmmaker Award, host Matilda Tao hinted at her pregnancy and asked her why she was still wearing heels. She also asked everyone to check out Shu Qi's figure and the crowd was in an uproar. Shu Qi awkwardly smiled and lightly touched her belly without any reply. Matilda Tao joked that Shu Qi did not have to be in a hurry to deny the news, since it could still be speculated for three months. However it did not dampen the brilliant star power and the heated atmosphere. This year's Golden Horse Award chair, the already 63 year old Sylvia Chang appeared in an elegant black evening gown and gave a friendly wave to the crowd. Taiwan star Tiffany Hsu Wei-Ning was asked about rumors of getting back together with Ethan Juan. She said that today the Golden Horse Award would be the focus and changed the subject. Taiwan hunk Kai Ko Chen-Tung was nominated for Best Actor with THE ROAD TO MANDALAY. The team appeared together in a show of presence and many fans screamed for him. Ko Chen-Tung said that while shooting in Myanmar, the language barrier and the not so great environment made the production very tough but the film was well worth the effort. Eric Tsang Chi Wai walked the red carpet with son Derek Tsang Kwok Cheung and daughter Bowie Tsang as a family. Chi Wai was asked about not taking a cent for his work in MAD WORLD (YUT LIM MO MING), he felt that it was rare for an actor to run into a good script. Thus he would make the movie even if he had to pay. The nomination was already a reward. The Tsang Kwok Cheung directed SOUL MATE had decent box office and word of mouth. The host asked if he really knew about women. Kwok Cheung said that he had to thank his mother and sister because when he directed his sister influenced him a lot. Did Bowie want her father or her brother to win more? Bowie directly said, "Of course Papa, the last time he won was already 18 years ago. My brother is still young, he still has many more 18 years." Feng Xiaogang and Fan Bingbing competed with his film I AM NOT MADAME BOVARY. Director Feng said that Bingbing was the "most beautiful village lady". Despite claiming that he would not mention any gossip, he asked Bingbing whether "Big Black Bull" Li Chen would cheer for her. Fans screamed "Get Married". Bingbing joked, "I won't until I win!" Shu Qi was asked about the price of her jewelry and dress, she joked, "I am priceless!" However she pretended not to hear when asked if her husband Stephen Fung Tak Lun came. In comparison to the Chinese film stars, Korean star Song Seung-heon was the most popular. He also showed his friendly side and kept posing for selfies with fans in the rain. Seung-heon presented the award with Ariel Lin and he said that Ariel was popular in Korea too. Zhou Dongyu and Ma Sichun both were nominated for Best Actress with SOUL MATE. They walked the red carpet with performer and Best Original Film Song nominee Leah Dou. Leah appeared a little shy on the red carpet for the first time, as she kept hiding behind Zhou and Ma. She still had a smile on her face. Zhou Dongyu said that she was already very happy to be nominated. Ma Sichun said that originally she was very nervous but because they came as a group she was a bit more relaxed. The host asked if Faye Wong would cheer on Leah, Leah replied in a low key manner, "She just said let's go!" * (2016/11/26) I AM NOT MADAME BOVARY received five Golden Horse nominations including Best Film, Director, and Actress. Director Feng Xiaogang led Fan Bingbing and the team to attend the Golden Horse red carpet night two nights ago. THE ROAD TO MADALAY two nights ago was the Golden Horse Film Festival closing film, director Midi Z, actors Kai Ko Chen-Tung and Wu Kexi appeared together. The Golden Horse Best Actor nominee Ko Chen-Tung joked that he would wear the red underwear from when he was nominated for Best New Actor five years ago for added good luck. The 53rd Golden Horse Award will take place tonight in Taipei. Small budget film MAD WORLD (YUT LIM MO MING) with an outstanding script, production and actors Eric Tsang Chi Wai, Elaine Jin (Kam Yin Ling), Shawn Yue Man Lok's excellent acting was nominated for the Golden Horse Best New Director, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress. MAD's actress Kam Yin Ling, director Wong Chun, screen writer Florence Chan Cho Hang yesterday held a media tea in Taipei. Kam Yin Ling in the film played a mother who erupted into madness withou reason. Her exhausting yet explosive acting earned her the Golden Horse Best Supporting Actress nomination. Tsang Chi Wai worked with director Wong Chun before and appreciated his talent. Thus when Wong Chun asked him to be in another flm, Chi Wai not only showed his support for no charge but also asked Kam Yin Ling and Yue Man Lok to perform for the director. Kam Yin Ling said that she has been friends with Tsang Chi Wai for over a decade. She agreed when he asked. Yet when she first met the director she was surprised by how young he was. In the end his work wholeheartedly won her over. Kam Yin Ling had many fights with Yue Man Lok in the film. She revealed that in the film she hit Yue Man Lok for real. "When I worked with Chow Yun Fat on the film LOVE UNTO WASTE (DEI HA CHING), Chow Yun Fat slapped me too. Chow Yun Fat's serious slap made me see stars and dizzy. I performed that scene very well because real emotions flowed." * (2016/11/26) The Benny Chan Muk Sing directed, Louis Koo Tin Lok starred science fiction comedy MEOW (MIU SING YUN) yesterday held a Beijing press conference. The 180 centimeter tall giant cat was officially unveiled for the first time. Goo Jai led the cat to play games with the audience. He threw a bone off stage and the cat rushed into the audience to find it. It even took someone's selfie stick to take selfies. The more the cat ran though the more tail it lost. After returning to the stage it became a no tail cat! Goo Jai and the director immediately lent a hand and placed the tail back on its proper place. * (2016/11/25) Rapper K-Chek (Kuk Chek) earlier worked on his new film YUN BUT JU DIK NGAN LUI and ran into a huge acting challenge. "I play a bully, in the story I picked on a kid and had to beat him up. However after I did I felt very guilty. Later I ran into Chak Pui Wan (Icy) who played a doctor. In the scene I felt very bad after hearing her comforting words, I had a strong headache and lost my composure. I didn't use eye drop to help with this scene, I purely relied on emotions to force out the tears. I only needed one take. Since I haven't had a lot of experience, hearing the director say 'good take!' I felt very pleased and happy! (Did the story remind you of the earlier assault you suffered?) The assault was after the shoot. The scene went so smoothly, I wanted to thank Icy. She gave me a lot of advice, I hope that in the future we will have even more chance to work together." * (2016/11/25) Famous Hong Kong director John Woo (Ng Yu Sum) remade the late Japanese star Ken Takakura starred film MANHUNT, which recently wrapped up production. Aside from lead actor Zhang Hanyu who finished the shoot at the end of October, the other lead Masaharu Fukuyama and lead actress Stephy Qi Wei, Korean star Ha Ji-Won, Japanese actor Hiroyuki Ikeuchi and others all have been working night and day in Okayama, Japan. The entre team was both happy and lost about the MANHUNT wrap. Fukuyama after finishing MANHUNT felt very fulfilled and confident, as the production was truly memorable for me. The team basically has already arrived in Osaka for preparation in January and officially begun production in June. After five months the production finally wrapped up. Having never participated in a film production on such a scale and schedule, Fukuyama admitted, "Early in the production I thought this movie would probably take 3 years or so to make, will it really be able to be finished? Now the shoot is truly finished, I really have an exceptionally sense of achievement." Each time he participated in a film shoot, Fukuyama would always ask himself, "Can I do even more, even better?" Yet after this production, he confidently said, "I feel very fulfilled and confident." Fukuyama agreed with John Woo's unique art of violence action film style and said that MANHUNT's action was the most worthy of watching. He said with excitement, "I am really very happy to be able to participate in this film. My action scene had a 'white dove flying' scene. At the time I very realistically felt that I was living inside Director John Woo's film!" Due to the tight schedule, the team has been working in a hurry everyday. The originally scheduled 12 hours in the end went as far as 24 hours at work. Fukuyama all went all out on the last two days in full support of the director's shoot completion. Finally the shoot wrapped up early in the morning. Japanese actor Hiroyuki Ikeuchi worked on the last gun fight and fight scenes until the morning wrap. He said, "This international production has been truly very special. After such a long production period, I don't dare to believe that it has already ended. Suddenly I feel a little lonely, I really want to have a toast with Japanese wine to Director John Woo." Even though he has already been working for 20 hours, Hiroyuki Ikeuchi still had a smile on his face. After the wrap he changed and ran over to bid farewell to the other team that was shooting Fukuyama. He also watched Fukuyama's final scene. Lead actress Qi Wei ran into obstacle after obstacle, by the second shot she was already injured and sent to the hospital. However she only rested for a day before she continued her kidnapping scene. She was very professional. Even Masaharu Fukuyama and Hiroyuki Ikeuchi were very concerned about her and admired her very much. Qi Wei strongly said, "This scar is a memento from MANHUNT, it has a lot of sentimental value." On the last day, Q We even brought a lot of snacks for the team. She even worked from the morning until 7AM the next day before wrapping up and leaving. She prepared for her flight without any rest. Her final scene took 9 takes, she even demanded the last one. Although Qi Wei said that she would not cry during the wrap, when she saw the director she got teary eyed. She even hug the director three times and even hug everyone on the team. She also could not leave. She even wrote a letter to the director as a gift. With the wrap on the horizon, Director Woo was no less determined despite a 24 hour straight shoot. He in the end thanked and appreciated the entire team's professional spirit. He hoped to work with everyone again next time and joked that next time he wanted to make a drama. When the production officially wrapped, the team bid each other farewell and took photos. The set immediately became an autograph session. * (2016/11/25) Tony Leung Chiu Wai, Kris Wu Yifan, Tiffany Tang Yan, Jennifer Tse Ting Ting and others recently worked on PARIS RAIDERS (AU JAU GUNG LEUK) in Shanghai. The cast took time for the Mannequin Challenge. Yesterday Wu Yifan posted the video online and said that he was the director and the entire team including Leung Chiu Wai and Tang Yan all coordinated with this game. Everyone had a lot of fun. In the video, everyone was busy with the production on the set. Later Wu Yifan picked up the clapper board and yelled "action". Wu Yifan was quiet immediately. Everyone around him including Leung Chiu Wai was silent and still for a wonderful moment. The camera went to Tang Yan, Tse Ting Ting and the crew that was in the middle of setting up. Wu Yifan also challenged Fan Bingbing, Li Chen, Huang Xiaoming, Angelababy. Li Chen watched the video and asked, "How many times did you practice this?" Wu Yifan said only three times and joked that everyone was an actor too! * (2016/11/25) The film SKY ON FIRE (CHUNG TIN FOR) two nights ago held its premiere at Olympian City. Director Ringo Lam Lan Tung led actors Joseph Chang Hsiao-Chuan, Eddie Cheung Siu Fai, Michelle Wai Sze Nga, Jim Chim Shui Man and Joman Chiang in attendance. One of the lead actors Daniel Wu (Ng Yin Cho) was unable to attend because he was working on a series overseas. At the premiere director Lam Lan Tung praised Chang Hsiao-Chuan for being tough, fearless and focused, but most of his physical contact was with male stars. He joked that next time he would arranged for more girls to be in close contact with him. Chang Hsiao-Chuan was asked about Director Lam's intention of giving him so romantic action scenes. He joked, "I am OK if the director makes the arrangements." Earlier Chang Hsiao-Chuan announced his break up. Has he asked any girl out for Christmas? He said, "I will spend Christmas and New Year with family, because my sister brought her daughter back to Taiwan. (Are you afraid that your family would ask why you broke up?) They know. (Did your family feel it was regrettable?) They are OK!" Has his family rushed him to get married? Chang Hsiao-Chuan said that they would not because his sister is already married. His mother also has not introduced any girl to him. She was in no rush and felt that he had to decide for himself about stuff like that. In the film Chang Hsiao-Chuan had many dangerous stunts and even a car chase. Was the production tough? He admitted, "In a car chase in the film, the director would ask us to perform the stunts ourselves. Thus we felt very stressed. (Did you get hurt?) More or less we would get hurt, but nothing too serious." Wai Sze Nga earlier announced that she and her boyfriend of three years have broken up. Would she consider Chang Hsiao-Chuan who is also similarly single recently? She said, "How can you be so sudden? That's great (But he is very dull?) I am very dull too. My best friend is my cat, dog and Mommy. Should find someone with the opposite personality? Fnd someone who isn't as dull? (How is your Putonghua?) I have to practice a little." She said that in the film she had no scene with Chang Hsiao-Chuan at all. She played Ng Yin Cho's wife. She had a lot to say about Ng Yin Cho. "I was so happy about being able to play Ng Yin Cho's wife that I would've done it for free." She said that Ng Yin Cho's most attractive part was that after marriage he still really took care of his wife and daughter. One day his wife visited the set and she saw how loving they were. She thought that if she would have such a husband in the future that would be great. * (2016/11/24) Director John Woo (Ng Yu Sum) in memory of hs friend, the late master class actor Ken Takakura remade MANHUNT into a film. The production officially wrapped this week. For the past few days they have been working at an Okayama Prefecture studio and not affected by the recent earthquake. In the film Masaharu Fukuyama played Ken Takakura's detective character. Because they were in a hurry to finish Fukuyama's scenes three days ago, the director and the team worked night and day. After the shoot the director even presented flowers to Fukuyama, Ha Ji-Won and other actors. Aside from Fukuyama, MANHUNT also has many top Asian stars like Mainland artist Zhang Hanyu who plays an international lawyer, EMPRESS KI's rising Korean star Ha Ji-Won played a female assassin. The cast also included Naoto Takenaka, Yasuaki Kurata, Nanami Sakuraba, Jun Kunimura, Hiroyuki Ikeuchi, Tao Okamoto, and Mainland actress Stephy Qi Wei. Takumi Saito and Hisash Yoshizawa have been revealed for the first time as kidnappers, the top Japanese star Haruka Ayase has been rumored as a guest star as well. * (2016/11/24) Annie Liu (Lau Sum Yau) yesterday attended an athletic arm band event. Sum Yau covered up a bruise that was the size of half a fist on her right arm. She revealed, "Earlier while shooting DRAGON TATTOO (GAU LUNG BUK BAI) I got the bruise from a chase scene with UFC champion Anderson Silva. In the story I ran in a panic in a gym, when the scene ended I wasn't paying attention and ran into something. It was inevitable but very minor anyway. When I saw the champion fight with (Max) Zhang Jin, I thought that they were amazing but also had it very tough. If I would have the chance I would like to give it a try too, so now I am working hard to get into shape first." Sum Yau said that a foreign friend after learning that she was working with Anderson Silva immediately asked her to get an autograph, but because the champion was either busy with fighting or learning his lines, so far she still has not felt right to bother him. * (2016/11/24) Carlos Chan Ka Lok attended the launch of the Asian Film Festival in Chai Wan. The Chan Ka Lok starred HAPPINESS (HUNG WON SI NGOR) and the Chan Chi Fat directed WEEDS ON FIRE (DIM NG BO) would represent Hong Kong. Chan Ka Lok revealed that with HAPPINESS he won the Wuhan Chinese Young Generation Film Forum's New Actor. Speaking of his friend Michelle Wai Sze Nga's break up, Chan Ka Lok said, "I know the break up was amicable, today is her birthday and I will take her to dinner. She has a lot of friends, there is no need to worry." * (2016/11/24) Nina Paw Hee Ching, Raymond Wong Ho Yin, Michelle Wai Sze Nga and others two nights ago attended their film SHOW ME YOUR LOVE (SIU SAU HIN DAI SAU)'s charity premiere. Sister Bau said that the new film is a tear jerker, during the shoot she was already very touched. She said, "I play a mother I can relate to. I have always thought I was very filial, with a 90 point score; but as the shoot went on felt that actually I failed and was lacking at some places. Mother usually would accommodate their children. Children never give to their parents as much as parents give to their children." Playing Sister Bau in her youth, Wai Sze Nga admitted that she already brought tissue with her to the movie. She said, "This time I have to play the younger Sister Bau, I was glad but also very stressed because I had to perform well. Before hand I already watched Sister Bau's television series again." Wai Sze Nga also said that during the shoot she thought about becoming a mother and even called her boyfriend to share the idea. Although now they have already broken up, they remain friendly. Thus two nights ago she asked him to come to support her. Returning to film after 7 or 8 years, Wong Ho Yin learned that his new film's screening response has been decent. He also praised the boss for making the rare small family film. He said, "This time the film is about family. I am very happy to work with Sister Bau. I hope next year I will be able to make more movies and handle both film and television." [ BLAH OF THE WEEK ] Columns, Reviews, Interviews 1. TA KUNG PAO, NOVEMBER 25 2016, THE WEEK IN FILM BEASTS LAND ON TOP IN HONG KONG AND THE U.S. Last week the J.K. Rowling best selling novel film adaptation FANTASTIC BEASTS AND WHERE TO FIND THEM opened strong with HK$ 18.37 million to come in first at the box office. If its momentum continues for two or three weeks, it would have a chance to compete with ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY's opening on the 15th next month. Released in the previous week, the popular Japanese animation YOUR NAME. made HK$ 10.18 million in second place. Over two weeks it accumulated HK$ 16.32 million, seemingly word of mouth served its purpose as its second week was better than its first; DOCTOR STRANGE made HK$ 3.42 million in third place, over four weeks it made HK$ 57.48 million; INFERNO made HK$ 1.03 million in fourth place, over three weeks it made HK$ 11.27 million; THE GIRL ON THE TRAIN made HK$ 870,000 in fifth place, over two weeks it made HK$ 2.34 million. Last week's total box office was HK$ 36.96 million, HK$ 9.84 million more than the previous week's. As for other new releases, the U.S. documentary WHERE TO INVADE NEXT made HK$ 107,000 in tenth place, with advanced screenings it made HK$ 118,000; the Hong Kong documentary THE POSTERIST made HK$ 12,000 in twenty third place; the thriller REMEMBER made HK$ 9,000 in twenty eighth place. In the Mainland, the Feng Xiaogang directed I AM NOT MADAME BOVARY made 204.36 million RMB for the first place at the box office. Director Feng returned to directing after PERSONAL TAILOR three years ago, seemingly the audience's expectation for this hit director was rather strong. With the earlier positive reviews from various film festivals and a cast with stars Fan Bingbing and Guo Tao, the film was not Director Feng's strong suit of comedy but a drama with a rather strong artistic flavor. Looking back at Director Feng's past success, PERSONAL TAILOR made 536.97 million RMB; in 2011 BACK TO 1942 made 370 million RMB; in 2010 IF YOU ARE THE ONE 2 made 406.99 million RMB; in the same year AFTER SHOCK made 648.64 million RMB; in 2008 IF YOU ARE THE ONE made 310 million RMB; in 2007 ASSEMBLY made 64.99 million RMB. We shall see if BOVARY will be able to surpass the past success. DOCTOR STRANGE made 133 million RMB in second place, over three weeks it made 704 million RMB; the Ang Lee directed BILLY LYNN'S LONG HALFTIME WALK made 54.9 million RMB in third, over two weeks it made 135.9 million RMB; the new disaster film release DEEPWATER HORIZON made 54.8 million RMB in fourth place; the Japanese animation ONE PIECE FILM GOLD made 32 million RMB in fifth place, over two weeks it made 101.8 million RMB. Among other new releases, the Chinese French co-production THE WARRIORS GATE made 17.2 million RMB in seventh place and starred Mark Chao and Ni Ni; the French comedy THE NEW ADVENTURES OF ALADDIN made 13.4 million RMB in eighth place. - LAM KAM BO 2. TA KUNG PAO, NOVEMBER 24 2016, ASIAN FILMS TWENTY FOUR EYES: POST WAR CROSS SECTION "Film festivals" in recent years have blossomed all over Hong Kong, as a variety of people and even Hong Kong branches of foreign organizations all have organized events and crowned them with the name of film festivals. Yet with the ones like the currently running "Japanese film festival 2016" that only screens four films, one can only say that they are "short and selective". They are short naturally because they have few programs; as for selective it refers to their film selections. From the classic TWENTY FOUR EYES, THE MAKIOKA SISTERS, MABOROSI to the new film TSUMUGU, the event can be said as a snapshot of a certain type of change in Japanese film. Among them, from watching TWENTY FOUR EYES on the big screen, this writer feels both nostalgic and fresh at the same time. - HUNG KWONG TWENTY FOUR EYES is one of the most important films in Japanese film history. The film opened in 1954, which could be described as a year of the great classic explosion. Films that are still influential around the world today like Akira Kurosawa's THE SEVEN SAMURAI and the first GODZILLA film were all released in that year. Yet, these films were no match for TWENTY FOUR EYES at the award events of the time. TWENTY back then won the Kinema Junpo's Best Film of the Year award, which could be said as full of "gold content". Kinema Junpo Best Film The so-called TWENTY FOUR EYES refers to the 12 elementary school students' eyes in the film. The story began in 1928 on Shodoshima on Seto Inland Sea in Japan. The just graduated Ms. Oishi came to teach in an elementary school in a remote country village. Her Westernized fashion and bicycle riding ways did not fit in with the residents on the island, but with her happy personality and care for her students she very quickly got along with the students. As time passed, some of her students continued on with their education and some had to start working early on. The eruption of war even gave everyone a taste of life and death. Ms. Oishi due to her left wing ideals was forced to leave the education world until after the war, when she was finally able to return to the school and reunite with the surviving students. Director Keisuke Kinoshita used displaced shots to capture the island scenery, which was a contract to the lives of the people under the pressures of poverty and war. TWENTY FOUR EYES was very popular back then. It displayed the story of war victims and more or less comforted the Japanese audience. Keisuke Kinoshita went on the battlefield and during the war made ARMY, which upset the military. After the war he also made LEGEND OF A DUEL TO THE DEATH that showed Japanese soldiers' raping and pillaging side, he was not the type of filmmakers who just kept posing as the victim. In the film Ms. Oishi's students were little but some already stated that they wanted to be soldiers when they grew up. The reason was very simple, only by joining the military would they be able to escape poverty and succeed. In the end, all of her male students whether volunteered or drafted all went to war. Very few returned whole. Even Ms. Oishi's husband died overseas. Interestingly, this film was not only popular back then, it was also one of the earliest films to be imported to the Mainland. As early as the 50's a translated version was released. New Chinese filmmakers imported TWENTY FOUR EYES so quickly perhaps very likely due to the original novel's writer Sakae Tsuboi. Sakae Tsuboi's husband Shigeji Tsuobo was a Japanese Communist Party member and a left wing writer. In the Sakae Tsubo museum on the Shodoshima Island, a photo of Shigeji Tsuobo and former Chinese prime minster Zhou Enlai was on display. The Earliest Film Pilgrimage Landmark In the original novel no specific spot was mentioned, as it only mentioned a chilly village on the Seto Inlet Sea. When Keisuke Kinoshita adapted the film, he used Sakae and Shigeji Tsuobi's home Shodoshima as the location where the story occurred, used its attractive scenery to support the story. Finally Shodoshima became known all over Japan. The local government even erected a bronze statue of Ms. Oishi and her students. Several decades later, it even established a "TWENTY FOUR EYES film village" that became a must visit travel destination there. Actually, this film captured the location's natural and historic scenery. With the addition of new flights, Takamatsu, Japan and its nearby Shodoshima have become of the travel hotspots for Hong Kong tourists. Today "Road of the Angel" that has become romantic scenery for many was the first shot of the film after its opening credits. In the film the student's graduation trip location was Takamatsu.....airline companies with direct flights to Takamatsu could completely through the sponsorship of this film's release to promote its new route. This location could be said to be one of the earliest "film pilgrimage" landmark. 3. TA KUNG PAO, NOVEMBER 24 2016, LIGHT SHADOW PATH FILM POSTER GRAND MASTER YUEN TAI YUNG A friend once asked me whether my entry into the industry in the 80s had any element of luck, the answer was certainly. Back then I was in film advertising, the client was Cinema City. Thus I met famous directors like Tsui Hark, Ringo Lam Lan Tung, Johnnie To Kei Fung and John Woo (Ng Yu Sum), to a film fanatic it was a truly rare opportunity. Looking back over 30 years later, actually even luckier was that I was able to work with the most important poster master in Hong Kong film history for almost a decade back then. He is Yuen Tai-Yung. Hong Kong film's most glorious era was the 80s. At the time the cinemas were enormous, many were even independent structures. The lobbies could accommodate many posters, and they had outdoor advertising billboards with posters as blue prints. Back then the Golden Princess cinema circuit's "Now Showing", "Next Change" and "Coming Soon" film posters and billboards were almost all Yuen Tai-Yung's work. Sometimes even Golden Harvest cinema circuit's movies were also be from his pen. His popularity was unrivaled. Why were Yuen Tai-Yung's posters so popular? Everything went back to the 1975 THE LAST MESSAGE (TIN CHOI YU BAK CHI). When Yuen Tai-Yung learned that the Hui Brothers was making THE LAST MESSAGE, he created a poster and recommended himself through a friend. He drew Michael Hui Koon Man as the "dummy" and Sam Hui Koon Kt as the "genius", finally he was hired. Then, he again drew PRIVATE EYE BLUES (BOON GUN BAK LEUNG), because his artwork was exciting and detailed the comedic feel was on display on paper. It became a film poster classic and made him a master class poster artist. Superstars he has drawn included Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, Hui Koon Man, Karl Maka, Chow Yun Fat, Stephen Chow Sing Chi, Hui Koon Kit, Leslie Cheung Kwok Wing, Anita Mui Yim Fong, etc. Most recently, Yuen Tai-Yung completed his 50 year art exhibit. Hui Koon Man's son Hui See Wai's documentary THE POSTERIST also completed its run. Many young art fans and film fans who studied Yuen Tai-Yung's creative process and experience started with his art work and layout, they might not notice the most important "touching" element. Commercial art's "touching" element perhaps could be called marketing. If a film poster, no matter how it was, was unable to attract a viewer to go to the movie, it would not be considered successful. Yuen Tai-Yung's poster was able to draw the visual interest for the film, which perhaps should be credits to his years of experience at an international advertising company. Yuen Tai-Yung never talked about deep theory. He would only humbly attributed other people's praises to timing, location and people. The fact was as such, an advertising world design genius caught up with the Hong Kong film glorious age and became the film poster grand master of a generation. - TIN LIK [ In Production Now/Soon ] BINDING SOULS Can : Bong Ling d. chan Pang Chun Kara Wai Ying Hung , Carlos Chan Ka Lok, Tsao Yu-Ning, Angie Shum Yat Ka, Janelle Sing Kwan [ THE FILM CATALOGUE ] In order to complete the dissertation to graduate, five university students are arranged to come to a historical famous college to search for the information of Japanese army back at World War II, during which the university was occupied by the Japanese and turned into a military laboratory. Ding Sheng Jackie Chan, Darren Wang, Nick Wang, Tao Wang, Opening January 26 2017 [ THE FILM CATALOGUE ] In December 1941, Japan expands the occupation of its neighbouring countries to Southeast Asia. The railway from Tianjin to Nanjing in East China became a key military transportation route, heavily guarded by Japanese soldiers. Railroad worker Ma Yuan leads a team of freedom fighters. Using his deep knowledge of the train network, he and his men sabotage it, ambushing Japanese soldiers and stealing supplies to feed the starving Chinese. Although the freedom fighters have no weapons of their own, they employ whatever tools are at hand, including shovels, loose railway track planks and diverted trains. The local Chinese call the unlikely heroes the "Railroad Tigers". The freedom fighters find themselves on the wrong side of the tracks when the Japanese send reinforcements to Shandong. In an act of defiance, Ma Yuan launches his most dangerous mission yet, blowing up a heavily-guarded railroad bridge. When the Japanese learn of the crippling plan, which will derail the war effort, the stakes are raised even higher. SOMEONE Can : Hor Jeh d.
