Last year he released the high definition restoration blu-ray collection of CHICKEN AND DUCK TALK, MR. COCONUT, THE MAGIC TOUCH, and FRONT PAGE. In the process of going through the large pile of posters, See-Wai discovered most of the posters came from the hands of Yuen Tai-Yung and thus became interested in this anonymous hero. "At the time CHICKEN AND DUCK TALK and FRONT PAGE's blu-ray videos were released, the company happened to have to handle a big pile of old posters. So I thought of the promotional strategy of giving away the posters with box sets. Many viewers specifically asked for Yuen Tai-Yung's posters, which made me very curious. Who was Yuen Tai-Yung? later I looked at the company's old posters agin. The old posters were hand drawn. Yuen Tai-Yung drew over 200 Hong Kong film posters, 16 with the Hui Brothers. Many were some of the highest grossing films." Thus Hui Wai-See decided to fund a documentary himself, from production to editing to post production he did everything himself as a salute to the master. THE POSTERIST earlier was screened at the free outdoor program Freespace Happening, received good response and made many curious about this behind the scene hero Yuen Tai-Yung. The film will be shown at the Broadway Cinematheque starting Saturday. The over 70 year old Mr. Yuen Tai-Yung gladly made an appearance and shared with the media his experience. Mr. Yuen was very kind. He said that back then he worked at an advertising agency. Later under his superior's recommendation he drew his first poster. "My childhood dream was to become the world's best artist, later I realized that it was impossible. After I drew my first poster, I mustered up the courage to go to the Diamond Hill studio to try to get (Sam) Hui Koon Kit's business. I drew PRIVATE EYE BLUES. The last time I saw Hui Koon Kit was 1982, the next time was at the concert that he just finished. The 70s and the 80s were the most golden era of the Hong Kong film industry, this business had its share of difficulties but I would definitely finish my job. Back then when I had to rush out a film poster, I would need 7 nights on average. However I persisted against working overnight no matter how rushed the job was . The only time I spent an entire night was the MY HERO poster. Later in 92 He retired. This time See-Wai approached me and thus after 40 years I met Hui Koon Man again. We talked nonstop when we got together." Hui See-Wai for his directing debut asked his father Hui Koo Man and Hui Koon Kit's son Ryan Hui Wai Yan to guest star. He only wanted everyone to remember each one of the cartoonish film posters of yesteryears. * (2016/11/16) Golden Horse Best Actress Lee Sinjie was invited to be on the Golden Horse Award jury this year. For 12 days in a row she would watch nominated films. Lee Sinjie's family including her husband, twin sons and parents all came along. She bashfully said that she had to "make fresh milk" during her break. Lee Sinjie said that she originally did not plan to resume work so early, but she felt that this was something that was quite a honor and very important. Thus she agreed to be on the Golden Horse Award jury. * (2016/11/15) Gigi Leung Wing Kei's return to film after giving birth, SISTERHOOD (GWUT MUI) was selected for the 1st Macau International Film Festival competition. Leung Wing Kei was not only happy about the selection but also hoped that SISTERHOOD will continue to qualify for other film festivals so more people would appreciate this film. Gigi praised director Tracy Choi Ian Sin, whose handling of communication with actors was very mature. She said, "It's very rare that I would run into such a sincere script, a character with so much potential. I hope that everyone would like SISTERHOOD just as much as I do and like this character of Sze Sze!" * (2016/11/15) The film SKY ON FIRE (CHUNG TIN FOR) earlier held a press conference in Beijing. Director Ringo Lam Lan Tung led Daniel Wu (Ng Yin Cho), Zhang Jingchu, Amber Kuo, Joseph Chang, Zhang Ruoyun to the appearance. In the film Zhang Ruoyun played a third party that put Amber Kuo and Joseph Chang's relationship at risk. The director even took the chance to praise the stars for personally performing their stunts. The team also expressed their views on their characters. The newly released SKY ON FIRE ultimate trailer fully displayed Lam Lan Tung's "destruction fetish". When asked why he would ask these five gods and goddesses with high face value to perform, Director Lam said that the guys' handsomeness could attract the goddesses to join. He used the five major elements of gold, wood, water, fire and earth to describe these leads. Almost breaking his nose during the shoot, Ng Yin Cho had to work despite his injury. He could be said as real "gold" without any fear of cauldron fire; Zhang Jingchu was the opposite, with the feeling like moving clouds and streaming "water" her detailed and changing emotions was difficult to grasp. Protecting his sister, Joseph Chang was "earth". Trees require earth as he would overlook everything for family. Amber Kuo was an artist, with a heart that was as determined as "wood". Like the sibling she played in the film, they were tangled together at the roots. As for new Mainland actor Zhang Ruoyun, with his rage to avenge his father he was described as passionate "fire". The director at the press conference even took the chance to praised the stars for personally performing their own stunts. Ng Yin Cho admitted that his character was very special with his sense of justice. "In the film he isn't a cop. Because of his sense of justice he firmly protects those who are just." Speaking of Zhang Jingchu, Ng Yin Cho said that he protected her again after PROTEGE (MOON TOH). He thanked Lam Lan Tung for providing this chance to continue their relationship. Zhang Jingchu described their collaboration as "familiar". Ng Yin Cho joked that "I get older and she is more mature". Joseph Chang said that the building jump scene was extra exciting for him. Playing siblings with Amber Kuo as they traveled overseas for medical treatment, they were jokingly called "wandering siblings". Zhang Ruoyun, Amber Kuo and Joseph Chang revealed that they played a mysterious love triangle. Speaking of where her love ended up, Amber Kuo revealed that she made a very intriguing choice but viewers would have to find out in the film. * (2016/11/14) Xanadu Ng Yo Yo starred in the film LADY Z two nights ago held its premiere. Susan Shaw Yam Yam, Grace Lam Nga Sze and Uny Chiu were all no shows from the guest list. About her first lead role she said, "In one scene I had to puke up a pile of bugs. Although they were meal worms, it was pretty scary. At first I even screamed, but actors have to try to improve themselves." LADY Z was only released for a day so few might have caught the audience's acting and wasted Xanadu's sacrifice for the arts. * (2016/11/14) International kung fu superstar Jackie Chan yesterday received a lifetime achievement Oscar, the first Chinese to receive the award and the fourth Asian to receive the honor. Oscar winning Best Actor Tom Hanks compared him to Buster Keaton and John Wayne when introducing Jackie Chan. He even praised Jackie Chan as "Chantastic". Jackie Chan yesterday appeared in a Chinese kung fu suit like he did in DRUNKEN MASTER 2 (JUI KUEN II). He even brought a pair of panda dolls on the red carpet. Jackie Chan, film editor Anne Coates, casting director Lynn Stalmaster and documentary producer Frederick Wiseman yesterday all received the lifetime achievement Oscars. Jackie Chan was the fourth Asian to receive this award after Japanese director Akira Kurosawa, Indian director Satyajit Ray and Japanese animation master Hayao Miyazaki. Jackie Chan's RUSH HOUR co-star Chris Tucker presented the award and congratulated him. When Chris presented the award, he bowed and presented the award to Jackie Chan with both hands respectfully. After Jackie Chan received that award he happily kissed the award and said sentimentally, "After making 200 movies, I have broken a lot of bones. Finally I got this award." Jackie Chan said that 23 years ago he touched the Oscar award for the first time at Sylvester Stallone's home. He then told himself that he wants to win the Oscar once. On the red carpet, Jackie Chan revealed that he would like to work with the Oscar winning director James Cameron and be in his AVATAR 2. Superstars from around the world showed the support. Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger who worked with Jackie Chan in a Chinese Russian film, RUSH HOUR director Brett Ratner and Chinese star Michelle Yeoh (Yeung Chi King) congratulated him in person. * (2016/11/14) Yesterday was November 13th, the birthday of both Shawn Yue Man Lok and Huang Xiaoming. Lok Jai turned 35. He not only celebrated with his co-star Miriam Yeung Chin Wa, but friends Eddie Peng Yu-Yan and Shu Qi also sent well wishes on social media. The married Shu Qi even wished Lok Jai would wish another half soon. Busy with his new film LOVE OFF THE CUFF (CHUN GIU GAU JI MING), Yue Man Lok received a birthday cake from the team as a surprise on the set. The team bought two birthday cakes, one was filled with Smarties and the other gold coins. Smarties represented childlike innocence and the gold coins represented income. They were meant for Lok Jai to have fun and also greatly increase his income. Co-stars Yeung Chin Wa and Mainland actress Jiang Mengjie celebrated Lok Jai's birthday. During Lok Jai's break, director Pang Ho Cheung and Chin Wa dragged Lok Jai into the room to pretend to chat so the team would have time to prepare. When Lok Jai returned to the set, he saw the cake and asked out of surprise, "There really is one?" His smile could not hide his excitement. Lok Jai also posed for photos with the team and took selfies and videos with everyone. Lok Jai said, "I am very touched! Finally I am able to spend my birthday in Hong Kong!" In the past few years he had to work in the Mainland on his birthday so he was unable to celebrate in Hong Kong. This time the director fulfilled his dream. Lok Jai also did not have to work on his birthday. He said that he will spend it with his family. Because he was very tired from all the recent movie productions. He had a rare one day holiday and he would like to spend it comfortably. * (2016/11/14) The 79 year old drama master Chung King Fai needed to stop all of his television and stage work due to colorectal cancer fears, including his TVB series COME HOME LOVE: DINNER AT 8 and the play since 2007 TUESDAYS WITH MORRIE. Originally scheduled for the 21st run next month, the drama troupe art director and the play's director Koo Tin Lung will play King Sir's role. Fortunately, King Sir has scheduled physical check ups so he was able to catch his colorectal cancer in time. The cancer was only in stage one. Earlier he already had a minimally invasive surgery to remove the cancer cells and did not even need chemotherapy. Now he has already returned home to rest. A week after the surgery, King Sir was able to walk around at home on his own. After resting a little more he would be able to return to work anew. * (2016/11/13) Lawrence Cheng Tan Shui after 26 years directed and starred in the film YUPPIE FANTASIA 3 (SIU NAM YUN JAU GEI 3 ji NG GA YAU HEI). He again played the male lead Leung Foon. Aside from Chrissie Chau Sau Na as his girlfriend, he also had a Larine Tang Yueping as his daughter. Ah Tan earlier even worked with heavyweight goddess Joyce Cheng Yun Yi in Sheung Wan. He was negotiating with Yun Yi, whose wore a low cut dress. Ah Tan's roving eyes were caught and later awkwardly said, "That's crazy!" In the story Ah Tan asked her boss Anthony Chan Yau's mistress Yun Yi for 3 million in break up fee. Ah Tan said, "Chan Yau had a nightmare, in which he sleepwalked and took off his wife's clothes while yelling out Yun Yi's name. His wife hit Chan Yau. Chan Yau paid Yan Yi 3 million for the break up. Only Leung Boon could be such a 'loser' to get the money back and more." Yun Yi said, "I officially understood what the term 'Kai Dai' meant. I only knew that when I was little I couldn't say it when I was introducing my godmother's son." Yun Yi stressed that in real life she would resist being the third party. "I would tell the guy to choose first, unless I don't know." Yun Yi and Chan Yau would not have any love scene. She said, "We are very pure, we explain it in space for imagination." Yet if the story required it she would be willing. Ah Tan said, "Chan Yau would have to pay for it himself. I am already over budget and the boss is already yelling at me." * (2016/11/12) Johnson Lee's directing debut YUT GA DAI SAI (RUN OF THE HOUSE) two nights ago held its production wrap banquet. Actors Tommy Tam (Ti Lung), Yuen Qiu, So Yuk Wa, Andrew Lam Man Chung and Chin Siu Ho attended. The film will be released during the Lunar New Year opposite the Stephen Chow Sing Chi produced JOURNEY TO THE WEST 2. Johnson admitted Chow Sing Chi brought him into the business in 1998, without Mr. Chow he would not be here. At the time he was only a kid and has watched each of Chow's films ten times. He remained a super fan today. Would he invite Mr. Chow to his movie? Johnson said, "I will invite him, but after changing phones I lost his number. I have always wanted him to come. Aside from Mr. Chow, (Michael) Hui Koon Man is also my elder. Both are heroes in my heart." In the film So Yuk Wa seduced Johnson, Johnson said that this time he made a family film. Ah So said that she definitely would be sexy, but Big Brother Ti Lung watched it and said it was funny but not dirty. As for the always mischievous Lam Man Chung, Johnson joked, "I really hate this person. He is expensive, but his acting is very scene stealing. His performance is even funnier than the script I wrote, so he is worth every cent. However other actors are also very expensive, every one is a veteran." Ah So also thanked Johnson for bringing her into the film world. Because in the past she mainly performed on the stage and on television, this time the chance to make a movie felt like a dream. Everyday she was able to work with her idols Ti Lung, Law Kar Ying and Chin Siu Ho, and she also got to play the mother of two children. Lam Man Chung played Ti Lung's older son, after working with Brother Lung he found out that he was playful too. On the set he often spoke "French". Speaking of Ah Chung having little contact with his two sons, Ah Chung declined to respond and even changed the subject to say that the children in the film often played pranks on him. Would he take his children to watch his movie? He said, "Let's see if they are free, we will find a day!" * (2016/11/12) Tony Leung Chiu Wai and Eason Chan Yik Shun two nights ago attended an event in Shenzhen. Eason performed the SEE YOU TOMORROW theme song LET ME STAY BY YOUR SIDE. Then Wai Jai also got on the stage to share the joy and said "anything is ferry man" to bring the event to its peak. Wai Jai and Eason even posed for photos backstage, but Eason's new hairstyle also became a topic online as it was described as "photo with Best Actor and a old lady". * (2016/11/12) The 53rd Golden Horse Award will take place on the 26th. They talked about shooting the film in Malaysia. Recently Harwick Lau Hoi Wai became the subject of talks after a short visit to an actress' room. Lau Hoi Wai explained that he went to her room to go over the script. Has the also married Wong Ho Yin been to an actress' room to go over a script? He immediately repeated no. "I only went to (Nina) Paw Hee Ching's room. (From now on would you only go to an actress' room with another worker?) Usually it would be at work, of course I would have workers next to me." Cheung Kai Lok revealed that friends there would arrange to go to colorful places after work, but he stressed that they would only reserve a room with drinks and no girls. "Finally because Wong Ho Yin didn't go, I didn't dare to go!" Wai Sze Nga said that everyone knew that she liked durian, so she had durian at every meal. She also said that she fell in love with a child star there because in the film Sze Nga played his mother. Although he was young, he was had quite a silver tongue. She found out from the child star's mother that actually they were all lines in the film. * (2016/11/11) Tony Leung Chiu Wai, Takeshi Kaneshiro (Gum Sing Mo), Eason Chan Yik Shun, and Angelababy starred film SEE YOU TOMORROW will officially open on December 29th and have advanced Christmas screenings to celebrate Christmas early. The posters have been unveiled and the leads appeared with different funny expressions to form a "comma". Eason performed the theme song LET ME STAY BY YOUR SIDE, the video of which was released earlier. * (2016/11/11) Stephy Tang Lai Yun who played many fragile characters before recently worked on Chapman To Man Chak's new film HUNG SAU DOH (KARATE) and played a karate master. Because she had zero karate experience, before the shoot she asked Stephen Au Kam Tung to be her instructor. With her athletic background Stephy had no difficulty with warm up and stretching and looked convincing with her punches, side kicks and even close combat. Although when she threw a punch she accidentally hit Ah Tong's ear, she was still praised for her potential. Although she tried Muay Thai kickboxing, Stephy did not know how to hold back. At her first lesson she ended up bruising both legs after her kicks. "Master Au's legs were all red from my kicks! (What about anywhere you shouldn't kick?) That goes without saying! I can't count how many injuries I gave him. Luckily he me her how to pull back my kick, when it got to the important region I could pull back." Speaking of the over two minute fight with a three degree karate athlete, Stephy admitted that she already felt the pressure as the scene would require to be finished in one take. "I won't get to practice, and it will have to be done in one take. However after over two months of training I don't want to waste the realism! The opponent will be an experienced master. I am afraid I won't be able to adjust. We will meet before hand." Has she tried to get into shape? Stephy said that instead she needed muscle training to support her body. The costume will show the waist, so she was working hard on the vest line. For her first fight scene, Stephy said that she has always wanted to try different characters. "In the past year or two I have focused on making movies. I have made many different types of film. I haven't released a new song in a year! Now I want to slowly transition to acting. I have an understanding with the company, I may consider independent or film theme song. (Since you have your heart set on acting would you not date yet?) I am not ready yet! I am prepared to reach a new height with my career, I would leave romance to fate." Ah Tong praised Stephy was one of the smartest students but was also very lazy. "In the film she has a kill shot, a mid air flip that normally can't be done without any martial art background. However she learned it in half a lesson, which may have something to do with her volleyball dive saves. Now she can go on her own!" He revealed that he had to fight a wrestler in the film, before hand he would also need special training. * (2016/11/11) Annie Liu (Lau Sum Yau ) yesterday and Hong Kong athlete Gi Ka Man attended an UNICEF charity run opening ceremony. Sum Yau ran on the treadmill for 1 minute to start the event and said that on the 27th she will participate in a 10 kilometer race. Although Sum Yau was working on her new film DRAGON TATTOO (GAU LUNG BUK BAI), she still insisted on running every morning to train. Speaking of her new film with Max Zhang Jin and MMA champion Anderson Silva, would she have to fight them? She said, "I will leave the fighting to the two gentlemen. I believe they won't hit a woman. However I have a few action scenes, in which I keep on running." Sum Yau said that she has always wanted to try to be an action actress. This time she had the rare chance to watch Zhang Jin and MMA champion on the set, so she would take the chance to learn in secret. [ BLAH OF THE WEEK ] Columns, Reviews, Interviews 1. TA KUNG PAO, NOVEMBER 10 2016, ASIAN FILMS RAGE: INESCAPABLE OBSESSION Since the 70s, Japanese films seemed to have particularly many murderers on the run. In reality, in the highly developed industrial society serial murders or disappearance would often take place. Such social news often became Japanese film directors' subjects. Shohei Imamura's VENGEANCE IS MINE was based on a real murder. Whether from real new or novels, today Japanese films still keep making similar stories. Director Lee Sang-Il's new film RAGE multiplied the "fugitive" character by three, the so-called "real culprit" would have to wait until to the end to be revealed. - HUNG KWONG The story of RAGE started with a chilling double murder case in the Tokyo suburb of Hachioji. The murderer used the victims' blood to write "RAGE" in an eye catching manner then vanished. The police believed that the murderer after cosmetic surgery hid in the crowd. Thus they issued a national bulletin for his arrest over television news. A year later, three suspects appeared in three different places in Japan. In Tokyo, a nights spot pretty boy Naoto and top advertising star Yuma after a night of passion grew hot and heavy; in Chiba near Tokyo, the mysterious Tetsuya fell in love with a fisherman's daughter Aiko and planned to live together; thousands of miles away in Okinawa, the unemployed Shingo ran into high school girl Izumi on an isolated island... Happiness Is Very Fragile The film developed all three stories, all three might be suspects and all three had a past that no one knew about. Whether in a small seaside fishing village, a vacation island or a metropolis like Tokyo, interpersonal relationship would always be indifferent and estranged. The happiness that each person could grasp would be very fragile. Director Lee Sang-Il came from the Shohei Imamura founded Japan Film University. This was his second adaptation of novelist Shuichi Yoshida's work. Coincidentally, his previous adaptation of VILLAIN was also about a love story with a fugitive. This time among the three trails in RAGE, two were obviously romantic. Whether the same sex romance that began with a physical relationship, the flash marriage between the slightly mental deficient fishing village woman and a mysterious outsider, the relationships were more or less flawed. In the two relationships, the strangers' companions already have built a deep relationship with them but were still filled of concern about their background. One denied knowing the stranger when the police called, another called the police hotline. In the southernmost Okinawa, the stranger on an isolated island and the "adventure seeking" female student appeared to be sunny and happy without a care in the world, but still hinted that he only came here to run away from someone or something. Social Restlessness By the end, the film almost had nothing to do with the investigation. The two detectives who appeared early in the film aside from being props that brought up the case and explained the criminal's background more or less were a way to create restlessness in the entire film. Interestingly, the film looked like many small Japanese films about everyday life in the past 20 or 30 years with the appearance of a quiet small town. Yet restlessness and rage flooded underneath. In this aspect, the fugitive not only left the enormous word of rage but also all the "injustice" that he witnessed or saw on the media. With te troubles that people might not stand for in everyday life, the average person might tolerate them. Yet the criminal in the film viciously left cynicism...... The director did not give a simple answer to the rage that flowed under the silence, like American military stationed in Okinawa, overconcentration of economy and the wealth gap. Instead he provided a lot of details to display some small friction between people. With the two detectives, a veteran and a rookie, a lot of "guy" behavior of the veteran would displease his young colleague. The capture of such details actually displayed another side of the Japanese society that has been rarely seen on the silver screen. Aside from the clean and obedient side, Japanese people also had their wandering and wrecked side. Showed Mercy Everywhere Friends who have visited Japan sometimes would run into the working class that would get drunk after work. Their disturbance level was no less than people in other neighboring countries. From this point, this film that showed mercy everywhere and sympathy for the characters in the three stories whether they were good or bad actually was like Shohei Imamura's film dug out the Japanese people's muddiest side. This point perhaps to the Japanese Korean director Lee Sang-Il would feel especially stronger. 3. TA KUNG PAO, NOVEMBER 10 2016, LIGHT SHADOW PATH "FINANCIAL PRODUCTS" AND SCREEN WRITERS At the end of last month, a China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong film screen writing forum took place in Shanghai. Almost 30 heavyweight screen writers attended. The topic was "Question of the Century: Where Has Our Silver Screen Protagonists Gone?", with which they examined the current industry condition and plotted a development strategy. Always lively with his words, a veteran screen writer summed up the four great questions and helplessness in regards to character creation in the industry today. First characters drowned in a tidal wave of products. Literature creations were quick to make a buck, characters were like unborn infants being forcefully removed from the womb -- the act itself was immoral. Secondly characters drowned in the lack of subjective fabrication, acting on themselves behind closed doors without any life. This was a lack of blood. Thirdly character drowned into the rushing stream of imitation others and lacking innovative guts, which was a lack of calcium. Fourthly characters drowned in empty shells without souls. They were only seeking entertainment without thought, joy but no belief. They lacked consideration of humanity, which was a lack of soul. The writer also pointed out that the current creative environment was still filled with piracy and copyright violation, which was less than ideal. Another speaker also had the same sentiment. He pointed out that film and television work has already become "financial products". Product managers, accountants and cashiers were all important, instead screen writers have become "fringe" and "peripheral". Many creators agreed with this. Due to how rapidly the market developed, film commercialization became mainstream. From a literary and artistic angle, screen writers can only serve as support in commercialized film industry -- "fringe" and "peripheral" as the speaker referred to. Film script has always had the position of "foundation of drama". After film became "financial product" it could not defend its position. Now many directors or producers signed many film contracts. Obviously they did not have any script as the basis of the contract, which was a business deal. The goal was to make company's forecast pretty and increase the price-earnings ratio. Reaching the film release quantity would be something to worry about later. Thus screen writers in this type of deals almost had no role at all. Another speaker pointed out that screen writers work for low wages for the long run and had no say at all. Manfred Wong (Man Jun) also said, "A young fresh meat wants 30 million and people still fight over him, but giving a screen writer 1 million would be too much. It is a disrespect for intellectual property rights." This situation actually has been improved. Screen writers might not be as powerful as producers and directors, but in order to make a good film a good script is still required. Many famous actors could agree to make a movie and change their minds in the last minute. The reason they made was mostly the script was not good enough. Thus an excellent script was still one the important factors for a film's success. Screen writers could not participate in the game of "financial product", but to truly make a movie screen writers still had an important role. Aside from self improvement, there was no other way. - TIN LIK [ In Production Now/Soon ] PARADOX Can : Tam Long Lit : Greedy Wolf d.
