Reportedly Wai Jai wrapped up his shoot last week. When he was preparing to return to Hong Kong from Rome, an earthquake hit central Italy and many flights were cancelled out of Rome. Wai Jai was stuck there as he waited for the film company to make arrangements. Yesterday he safely arrived. Wai Jai's management company said, "The earthquake hasn't affected the film production. Wai Jai's shoot has already been completed. Originally he was to return to Hong Kong, but the Italian earthquake impacted that. Wai Jai's flight back to Hong Kong ran into some delays as many flights were cancelled. The problem has been taken care of after a little effort." * (2016/11/02) Mainland star Lin Gengxin and Peter Ho Yun Tung starred in the wuxia film SWORD MASTER (SAM SIU YEH DIK GIM), the new trailer of which was unveiled. Lin Gengxin's character not only became everyone's target but also had a fatal rivalry with his old flame. Once played the same character, director Derek Yee Tung Sing said that he would force Lin Gengxin into a dead end. Lin Gengxin said, "Despite all his skills he is forced to do what he doesn't want to do by his parents, women, and criticism. Even worse, each time he meets someone trustworthy he would indirectly harm them. He truly is on the road of no return." * (2016/11/02) Taiwan actor Matt Wu Chung-Tien's directing debut starred Best Actor Aaron Kwok Fu Sing and the director's wife Yang Zishan. In the film ONE NIGHT ONLY Sing Sing played a gambler who went to gamble as soon as he was released from prison. He ran into a woman of the night Yang Zishan and began a night of romance. Sing Sing remembered that he had to personally go to the Thai prison for the prison scene. That prison had several thousands of major criminals. During the shoot he needed isolation. Sing Sing in AFTER THIS OUR EXILE (FU JI) played a gambler, but he said that in AFTER due to his debt he had to go on the lam with his son. It did not touch on his gambling side. ONE NIGHT ONLY brought of his past in romance and family from the gambling table. In order to understand the nature of gamblers, before the film started production he performed in a Singapore casino. After the concert he booked a room and everyone in his team gambled with him. They tried every game, from which he observed the detailed expressions of everyone when they won or lost. Sing Sing said that when colleagues lost money, he would pay them back. In addition they kept the bets small for fun. Sing Sing and Zishan earlier won Best Actor and Best Actress in the China Image Film Festival. When they worked together in ONE, he remembered the scene in which he and Zishan prepared to ride under a truck. The director asked them to be blindfolded, when the vehicle went through to create spark with the ground for a romantic atmosphere. Yet they had no room for error since they had to do it in one take. The flatness of the ground had to be measured very precisely and all safety precaution must be taken. Sing Sing said, "With my driving skill, in the end I still completed it successfully. However Zishan was out of her mind and broke down!" During late night snack, Sing Sing observed that the director asked Zishan what she would like with care. Only then did he guess that they were actually a couple. Director Wu Chung-Tien awkwardly smiled and said, "At the time we weren't married yet. After that scene she yelled me as soon as we got back. Because Aaron covered his face but had driving experience, only she saw the danger. Despite her speeding normally she would lose her mind. Thus she was so scared that she broke down. She kept glaring at me!" He said that he insisted for Zishan to personally perform the stunt because he wanted to make the romantic feeling stand out. Thus he did not use a double. The director pointed out that the hardest part to make in the film was actually the computer generated special effect scene when the train brushed by the vehicle. Because it was easy to goof up, the scene took half a year of special effect to complete. Sing Sing said that this shoot opened his eyes because he had to personally go to the Thai prison for a prison scene. The inmates were all major criminals, numbered in thousands. During the shoot they needed special isolation. They had to wait until the criminals were resting or eating to be able to shoot. * (2016/11/02) The 13th Hong Kong Asian Film Festival closing ceremony took place two nights ago. This year's two closing films were the Feng Xiaogang directed, Fan Bingbing starred I AM NOT MADAME BOVARY and the Kearen Pang Sau Wai directed, Chrissie Chau Sau Na, Joyce Cheng Yun Yi, and Babyjohn Choi Hong Yik starred 29+1. The event also announced this year's new Asian director award winner BYTHE TIME IT GETS DARK's Anocha Suwichakornpong. 29+1's director and actors attended the closing ceremony. Chau Sau Na was very pleased that the film was chosen as the film festival closing film. The film was adapted from a play. Chau Sau Na admitted that at first she worried that since director Pang Sau Wai has played her character she did not want to have any shades of her. Thus during the performance he tried to achieve a different feeling. The film was about two women who were turning 30. Sister Na said that during the shoot she was at this age. The film also seemed to be talking about different experience of hers like heartbreak. After the shoot she no longer had any worry about love. Perhaps when she turned from the 20's to the 30's she felt grown up. She has learned to handle matter that she has experienced before and would have a happy and optimistic approach. Cheng Yun Yi's father Adam Cheng Siu Chau just received the Performing Art Academy honorary degree. Yun Yi happily said, "I didn't know. Today I just talked with him on the phone. He only asked me if I wanted any soup and didn't mention it at all. I feel he is very cool. If I was told earlier I definitely would attend in support!" Would she celebrate with Papa? Yun Yi said, "Of course! I will cook something good for him, because lately he has been constantly making soup for me." Yun Yi admitted that Papa rarely talked to her about himself. She mostly talked about herself. Chau Guoon said that she did not talk about her love life. Yun Yi said, "I avoid the unpleasant stuff to keep him from worrying again." Would she get married first before telling Papa? She said that she had to find another half before she would be able to, but she first had to improve herself to be able to feel the brilliance. Love would always be about fate and could not be deliberately looked for. Yun Yi will turn 30 too. After making 29+1 she admitted that she started to think about marriage and having a family. She stressed that she was not in any hurry to wed, only that as she grew she felt she was in a countdown of having children. Would she consider "freezing her eggs"? Yun Yi said, "I thought about it, but isn't it expensive? Actually I hope to have one child. Boy or girl would not matter, being healthy and cute would be the most important!" * (2016/11/02) Jackie Chan's film has always produced its stunts seriously. The Ding Sheng directed, Tao (Huang Zitao), Wang Kai, Darren Wang, Sang ping, Alan Ng Wing Lun starred action comedy RAILROAD TIGERS shot a train stunt scene in under 20 degree below zero Celsius temperature. The Jackie Chan Stuntmen Association designed a variety of ways for train climbing alone, like down a slide, on a skateboard, on bamboo poles in order to surprise the audience with every stunt. The train climbing designs looked simple but actually the shoot risked "life and limbs". For the realistic train effect, the team made over two over 100 ton train engines. To achieve realistic steam train effects, in the chilly winter in December, director Ding Sheng took the 1000 person team to Tieling in 20 degrees below zero Celsius temperature. For perfection, Jackie Chan was extra strict with his demands for the actors. Huang Zitao revealed that for a train jumping scene, because endless bad takes he almost collapsed from all the jumps. In addition, under the severe cold, when they reached the train their hands were already in a lot of pain. They still had to handle more stunts. Wang Kai and Darren Wang joked that battling bitterly under such conditions truly drove them mad! Off camera, to fend off the cold, Jackie Chan was covered head to toe with heat pads. Huang Zitao and Wang Kai stood by the coal pile to keep warm when they were not in a scene. Darren Wang brought snow pants and thick socks. Big Brother Jackie Chan even invented a fire gun. Darren Wang said, "I have never seen anything like it before. As soon as the production stopped, Big Brother would aim this fire gun at me to keep me warm." * (2016/10/31) Charles Heung Wa Keung's China Star last year invested 300 million RMB on LEAGUE OF GODS (FUNG SUN JUEN KEI), Yu Dong's Bona offered 1 billion to cover the box office and successfully landed the film's Mainland distribution rights. At the contract signing he paid half of cover of 150 billion. Yet the film made only 300 million RMB, quite far of the 1 billion cover. According to the contract, Yu Dong would cover the loss. Yet Heung Wa Keung felt that the responsibility was not with the distribution company and was unwilling to let other people lose a lot of money. He decided not to take the other 150 million. No wonder Yu Dong praised Heung Wa Keung for his honor. * (2016/10/31) The film SEE YOU TOMORROW (BAI DOH YUN) will not open until December 23rd, but its promotion has already begun. Goo Jai said that he did not mind playing a father and showed a caring side with his daughter. With the SPL 2 (SAT POR LONG 2) team, PARADOX stars Koo Tin Lok and Tony Jaa. "Big Brother Big" Hung Kam Bo will be th action director. With the Central Drama Academy graduate, Mainland action actor Wu Yue and the 9 year Marine veteran Chris Collins, the story and the scenes will be even more exciting and fresh in order to make this film into another eye catching action series. Although he has help from Tony Jaa and Wu Yue, he runs into mob organ sale mastermind Chris Collins. Everyone thus begins close combat and chase. Rarely playing a father, would Goo Jai mind having a 16 year old daughter? He said, "I don't mind, but in reality if I have a 16 year old daughter, and she has relations with someone too soon then I would mind." Because the shoot will take time, Goo Jai will probably spend a hot Christmas in Thailand. Studying martial art since age 5, Wu Yue was very excited after learning that he would be able to work with Tony Jaa in the film. "In the film Tony and I will be friends, we will have no chance to fight. I mainly will fight with Chris Colllins. Yet when I see Tony and others fight, he jumps very high, very agile, he is amazing!" Wu Yue also was excited about working with Goo Jai, who has always been his idol. Thus with this chance to work together, earlier when they met for the first time he could not wait to ask for a photo together. As for Chris who will have a lot of scenes with Tony Jaa, he said that he learned a lot from him. "Making a movie and real fighting are very different. Now I have to fight and act, the directors sometimes say that my action is too fast. Tony really knows how to grasp the pace of every punch thrown and even coordinates with acting. I really need to learn that." On the other hand, playing a presidential candidate Lam Ka Tung said that this character will have a lot of "room to perform". The reason is he will need to learn Thai! Standing next to Ka Tung, Low Wai Kwong screamed "Ho Song" and everyone was baffled. Brother Kwong explained that it was Thai for "I will teach". * (2016/10/30) Aaron Kwok Fu Sing last night attended his new film ONE NIGHT ONLY's premiere and was asked about old flame Lynn Xiong (Hung Doi Lam)'s marriage. Sing Sing replied, "I would sincerely congratulate any friend in the business for getting married, it's just that simple!" Would he wish Lynn well? He said, "Of course!" As for the rumor that Sing Sing and his girlfriend went to shop for a ring in Shanghai, Sing Sing said that he would not talk about his personal life. Should reporters congratulate him? Sing Sing said, "Normally my work is already very colorful, I shared a lot. Thank you everyone for caring about my personal life and romantic world. I instead want to be low key with my personal matter!" Will he announce his wedding in the future? Sing Sing said, "It's too early for that, I hope to keep working hard. I have been luckier with offers of good scripts and from good directors, but now I am very busy, very busy. Work will start today until the end of next year, so I hope to focus on work. I also hope to run into a good character and again break through myself." * (2016/10/30) Tsui Tin Yau and Charmaine Fong Ho Man yesterday attended an insurance industry event in Diamond Hill. Recently busy with his new film MOOT YAU PONG MAN DIK HAU TIN (TWO DAYS LATER WITHOUT DUSK), Tin Yau revealed that he will play a couple with Shirley Chan Yan Yin and have intimate scenes. Has he told his wife? Tin Yau said, "I won't pay her any mind. (Not even her birthday next month?) Because I have to work, I won't be able to celebrate her birthday and our first anniversary. Last night we celebrated in advance, but I want to celebrate more after finishing the film." * (2016/10/29) Francis Ng Chun Yu and Louis Koo Tin Lok earlier spoke to the Mainland media to promote their new film SHED SKIN PAPA (TUET PEI BA BA). Chun Yu admitted that he took the chance to "get some advice". "Everyone thinks that old people would forget the past, but actually they are more energetic than other people. It's very tiring to carry the past. If it is taken away, you are much more relaxed. So I feel Papa Koo is a very relaxed person." Goo Jai also praised Chun Yu's performance. "Because my Papa also constantly told me about the past, when I first saw Chun Yu in make up I thought he was very convincing!" * (2016/10/29) The Bob Lam Sing Bun starred, Patrick Kong (Yip Lim Sum) produced film LUCKY FAT MAN (NGOR YIU FAT DAT) will soon open. Yesterday Bob posted a trailer that parody a Taiwan film. He and Natalie Tong Sze Wing were dressed Darren Wong and Vivian Sung's school uniforms. The thick browed "DarBob Wong" said, "I haven't worn a school uniform in a long time. (Was the make up hard?) The two 'cockroach antennae' are the hardest to deal with!" The hilarious four eyed student Sze Wing also said it was a lot of fun. * (2016/10/28) The Daniel Wu (Ng Yin Cho), Joseph Chang, Amber Kuo and Zhang Jingchu starred, Ringo Lam Lan Tung directed action film SKY ON FIRE (CHUNG TIN FOR) will open simultaneously in Hong Kong and China on November 25th. Earlier its first trailer was released with a series of thrilling car chases. It even spared no expense as a brand new Maserati was completely destroyed. SKY ON FIRE was Ng Yin Cho's return to Hong Kong film. On the second day of work Ng Yin Cho busted his nose when he personally performed a fight scene and was unconscious. "When I woke up it was like waking up in the morning. It was very comfortable, but when I saw the expression of all the workers I was very scared. Later I found out that I fainted." Ng Yin Cho's nose was broken. He never expected his co-star would bring him a bag of ice then directly straighten his nose. The next day he actually was able to continue to shoot to the surprise of many. * (2016/10/28) Shaw Brothers yesterday held a grand press conference to announce its future television and film business plans. Ultimately Shaw Brothers and TVB are family, but it will not affect TVB series productions. Will Ms. Mona Fong Yat Wa completely retire? Now we have the responsibility to carry on the tradition. We will work hard to make this name plate shine." Auyeung Chun Wa's 1996 MONEY JUST CAN'T BUY will be remade. He admitted that he still remembered the experience. "I of course remember the story because this was the first series that I played the lead in. Actually during the shoot I didn't know I was the lead actor. I thought that I only played a fairy. This series also broke me into the Mainland market and introduced me to even more viewers." Bobby did not mind the remake into either film or internet series, as it was rare for people to still remember this series after so many years. Would he like to work with the original team? He said, "We have to bring back Dr. Chan (Marianne Chan Miu Ying). I know that she still likes to act, let me ask her right away to see if now she would mind working with me." The internet drama FEI FU GIK JIN's star Wong Chung Chak revealed that the series will not start production until the middle of next year. He said that he finally was able to fulfill his dream of playing a SDU member. "I have played a dog trainer, plain clothes cop and bodyguard, this time I finally get to play SDU. I am ready for mentally and physically. It will be 30 episodes and shoot abroad." Reportedly the new mother Linda Chung Ka Yun will return to Hong Kong next week. Friend Sam Lai Heung said that she has already planned to meet with Ka Yun. For now she did not know whether she will bring the baby alone. Will she become the baby's god mother? She said, "I want to, many people want to be the god mother. The baby is very cute and looks just like Papa." Chan Jin Pang and Wu Ting Yan would not mind playing a couple in a Shaw Brothers film, as long as the company can schedule it they definitely will participate. Jin Pang admired Carol Cheng Yui Ling's "Cheng Nine Sets" nickname and joked that he only had to appear on three sets when he just came out of the training class. "Back then after I just graduated I stood still, then I went to the studio next door to put on a wig, then the next one to be beheaded. None had any line. Now it's much better." Ting Yan also said that she at most had to be on two sets. She remembered when she worked on VIRTUES OF HARMONY II she played two characters and no one realized it. Ko Hoi Ning and Kate Tsui Tsz Shan were rumored to be TVB chief Dr. Chan Kwok Keung's favorites. Yesterday they finally shared the stage during the group photo. Ko Hoi Ning earlier issued a statement to clarify that she did not receive any special treatment. She said, "That magazine has already written about me many times. I have to defend my professionalism, so I issued a statement." Would seeing the boss be awkward for her? She said, "No, because it's very fake. The magazine has wronged me for 4 or 5 years." Did her boyfriend mind very much? She stressed that she did not have any boyfriend, only she minded a lot. As for her rumored boyfriend, Ko Hoi Ning hoped that everyone would give her some space. She said that she was not young anymore, and dating could not be more normal. Tsui Tsz Shan has been working mostly in the Mainland in recent years. She said that she was not used to speaking Putongua and hoped to be able to rid herself of the habit of mixing Chinese with English. Did any "Young Fresh Meat" catch her eyes in the Mainland? She said, "'Young Fresh Meat' isn't right for me, I haven't seen any either. Actually I rarely saw any guy, and I don't like to be with anyone in the business." * (2016/10/28) Lawrence Cheng Tan Shui, Chrissie Chau Sau Na, Louis Cheung Kai Chung, Anthony Chan Yau, Babyjohn Choi Hong Yik and Larine Tang Yueping yesterday attended their film YUPPIE FANTASIA 3 (SIU NAN YUN JAU GEI 3 ji NG GA YAU HEI) production start worship ceremony in Sau Mau ping. Director and actor Brother Tan said, "This time the character is quite a loser, no longer a little man. Yet the bigger loser he is the more Sister Na loves him." Earlier they shared a bathtub in a scene. Brother Tan revealed that earlier in a hotel room, they shot a scene in which Sister Na resigned in sexy lingerie. They even embraced. Sister Na said, "In the film professionally and personally I understood my boyfriend very well, you can say it is using work for personal gain. However I play his girlfriend, not wearing clothes is very normal." Brother Tan said, "As soon as I said Sister Na would be in YUPPIE FANTASIA, people online were upset and said that I was using work for personal gain. Yes, I am using work for personal gain." Brother Tan said that he thanked Sister Na very much for trusting him. She knew that the scene was necessary and thus she did not ask to wear a bathrobe. Actually the scene was written long ago, it was not added just for Chau Sau Na. Sister Na said that Brother Tan really took care of her and believed that nothing would happen. The worst part of him was that when he learned that she had to watch what she ate, he ordered a lot of great food. She could only watch him eat in secret while she starved. Did she ask for the set to be cleared? Brother Tan said that the crew was very professional and would automatically leave. Did he have to perform in his underwear? He said, "I am pretty sharp too, I gave my first topless scene to Sister Na. I regret very much that I couldn't achieve the student's eight pack abdominal muscles no matter how hard I worked out. Before the shoot I did a lot to be in better shape, but of course I couldn't." When asked if she would do the same, Sister Na, "I can't describe it with words, I can only say that it is the 'complete meal'." Brother Tan admitted that he has not directed and starred for too long, the burden was too much. Luckily the actors performed well and did not concern him. Chung Kai Chung worked with Brother Tan again. He praised him as a very experienced director. This time he would play a villain who often got Brother Tan into trouble. He said that he was very happy to be able to play characters that were very far from the real him, which he felt was very challenging. Did he have any scene with Sister Na? He said, "Unfortunately no, but the director really respects the actor's creative space. I wouldn't eliminate the possibility of adding my own scenes to hook up with Sister Na. Let's see if the director would notice. However sometimes I don't need the director to notice, I would secretly do it." Ah Chung also revealed that in the film he and Harriet Yeung Sze Man would have relationship scenes. He said that he looked forward to work with a Performing Art Academy alumnus. He said that the entire film actually had a lot of fun but not dirty scenes. He watched YUPPIE FANTASIA before, so he looked forward to it very much. * (2016/10/27) The over 9 month pregnant Yao Chen shot a funny promo for Stephen Chow Sing Chi and Tsui Hark's JOURNEY TO THE WEST 2. Did his father give him any advice? He said, "He told me to be more careful with my next movie, not to rush into it and to take my time. Because I have a lot of other scripts tossed at me, I have to consider them carefully. I don't want to make a movie for the sake of making it." Wai Sze Nga said that she has wanted to watch SOUL. The film was about homosexuality. She was reminded of a same sex friend in secondary school. They were so close that they would constant sleep and bathe together at each other's homes. She pointed out that this friend still spent nights at her home. Did they still bathe together? She said, "I am willing, if she suggested it I would agree because we grew up together." TA KUNG PAO, OCTOBER 27 2016, ASIAN FILMS HEARTFALL ARISES: A GAME BETWEEN A HEROIC DUO As one of the most important break through in the 20th century medical science, the subject of organ transplant is often adapted for the silver screen. Even Hong Kong television stations have made series about it in the early 80s. One of the reasons that this subject catches the eyes of creators is undoubtedly during the process of the transplant, someone's benefit and even life would be damaged and complicated moral problems are involved. Whether it is the Hollywood science fiction film THE ISLAND or the Hong Kong action film SPL 2 (SAT POR LONG II), it often involves someone illegally or "legally" locking someone up for organ transplant use. Yet new director Ken Wu Pinru's HEARTFALL ARISES (GAING SUM POR) breaks through this set up and examines from another angle the organ transplant problem, which is rather surprising. - HUNG KWONG HEARTFALL ARISES takes place in Hong Kong. When Major Crime Unit inspector Ma Chun investigates the serial killer "General" is severely injured. With his life on the line he has to receive a heart transplant from "General", who died from a gun shot. A year and a half later, several tycoon serial murders that are exactly the same as "General's" modus operandi have appeared internationally. The special investigation team invites Ma Chun and criminal psychology professor Che Ka Wai to be consultants. During the investigation, Che Ka Wai's words and action draw suspicion from Ma Chun....... The basis of the entire film actually is a theory that Che Ka Wai raises during his lecture. Organ transplant not only would lead to the recipient's rejection reaction but may also receive the donor's psychological condition, because the cells of the transplanted organ has the donor's oriignal genetic code. Che Ka Wai and Ma Chun both receive "General's" organs to sav their lives. Organ Transplant Achieves Something New Such a set up seems to arrange for a show down between the two heroes. Both protagonists are in a "you have me, I have you" situation as they both have villain's body part transplants that lead to character and psychology changes. Even their dining tastes change. As the story develops, it almost makes people think that the film wants to take the science fiction route. Yet, the HEARTFALL ARISES story is still a very typical Hong Kong film set up. It brings up a seemingly very high concept beginning, but without much factual basis and details to support it it very quickly runs out of gas. The damaged heart and third stage cancer liver are not treated with organ transplant as average people like us would understand, in particular the so-called third stage cancer in the film in general refers to the condition has already spread. No matter how many organs are transplanted, it probably cannot be cured. Even ignoring these and parts that are different from objective knowledge, a suspect that has just been shot to death can actually be arranged for organ transplant operations. It is rather surprising, at least in Hong Kong there is no legal basis. Unless this serial killer who is ridding the world of evil business people has signed up for an organ donor card in advance, it would be another matter. Yet even so, how would Che Ka Wai have an illegal organ transplant? The screen writer and the director seemingly have no thought through how "General's" organs end up on the two protagonists. Chess Battle Of Wits, Outdated Special Effects Another contradiction that appears in HEARTFALL ARISES is the Chinese Chess elements. General, horse, cart, the seven northern stars setting and the two protagonist's appointment for a game add some brain color to the film. Yet these pieces and game at most are just additives. The chess match in the film obviously dos not have much to do with real chess. The pretend chess even makes people feel the screen writer and the director's wishful thinking during its creation. Even with the Nietzsche's quote "When you gaze long into an abyss, the abyss also gazes into you......", the flimsy story is hard to make up for. Actually these contradicting stories are all over past Hong Kong films and evn Hollywood films. Yet in genreal they can be covered with fast pace and exciting scenes. The problem is HEARTFALL ARISES fails considerably in action scene handling. The massively use computer special effect quality seems to set back several years. The film further reminded the audience its superficiality, quite a distance from the solid feeling that was full of energy in the golden age Hong Kong films. Evne worse, the superficiality of the casting (young female superior and the like) and the Cantonese lines that are often soaked with usage that the Mainland is used to all make the entire film neither fish nor fowl and not what it seems. It is very hard to image that this comes from the hands of a veteran Hong Kong filmmakers who has worked behind the scenes for many years. 3. TA KUNG PAO, OCTOBER 27 2016, LIGHT SHADOW PATH HAS HONG KONG FILM INFLUENCE DECLINED? Discussions about Hong Kong film has been endless, most claimed that the Hong Kong film industry has already declined or Hong Kong filmmakers' influence has dwindled by the day. These opinions never stand up to any test, but they still are somewhat factual depictions. Actually, Hong Kong film currently has already entered the stage of merging with the Mainland. Recently, Hong Kong directors achieved top marks at last year's Lunar New Year slot and this year's National Day slot. Their co-productions can attract an audience. Most of them maintain Hong Kong film style. Even more outstanding are their propaganda films, which are just as if not more entertainment than Mainland directors'. The problem of "out of touch" has already become history. Now when people still suspect whether Hong Kong filmmakers can be "in touch", they do not understand the industry condition. Because now for Mainland subject films, feature screen writer and producer (or their representatives) would put the subject and the structure first. Hong Kong directors and creators can have free reins in other aspects. Hong Kong filmmakers also agree with this method, the reason is that everyone understands that it is impossible to live in a new place for three to five years to come up with authentic work. AMERICAN DREAMS IN CHINA, THE TAKING OF TIGER MOUNTAIN and the most recent OPERATION MEKONG are the best examples. Hong Kong films are mainly co-productions. Just as the writer often stresses, Hong Kong directors' co-productions are mostly very heavy in "Hong Kong flavor". This is where their specialty lies and does not receive a lot of inspection restriction. Thus, people who stresses making domestic films should understand that THREE (SAM YUN HUNG), LINE WALKER (SI TOH HUNG JEH) and COLD WAR 2 (HONG JIN II) actually are very domestic. Hong Kong film influence has not declined. The film industry's biggest change is the Mainland market has already absorbed the talent, the difficulty of starting production on a movie has also been increased. Hong Kong indeed is lacking in talent training. With the soaring Mainland market in recent years, Hong Kong filmmakers are even busier. Hong Kong film production rate indeed is not easy to maintain. On the other hand, Hong Kong filmmakers produced films have gradually grown. They may not necessarily be Hong Kong films but Chinese language films. Because now many big directors sign contracts that numbers in tens, if they have to direct they may not be able to fulfill it ten years later. Thus they appear as producers, like Wong Kar Wai, Peter Chan Ho Sun and Wong Jing would produce many films. These films' subjects are Mainland original creation, so they probably should not be considered Hong Kong films (like SOUL MATE and SEE YOU TOMORROW). Thus, Hong Kong films may be fewer, but Chinese language film numbers would increase. This phenomenon proves that Hong Kong and Mainland film industry have already become so close that they are at a stage that they cannot be differentiated. Comments like Hong Kong film sunset or influence decline in no way reflect the entire truth anymore. - TIN LIK [ In Production Now/Soon ] PARADOX Can : Tam Long Lit : Greedy Wolf d. Anchored by two of the most promising young actresses of their generation, Soul Mate is an evocative drama that dissects young love with style and verve. NESSUN DORMA Rating : IIB Length : 94 mins. Opening March 22 2016 at the Hong Kong International Film Festival Opening October 27 2016 Trailer : https://youtu.be/UTSSE4gN9Z4 [ THE FILM CATALOGUE ] Former math prodigy Brian Fong is now a math teacher in a primary school, living the life of an ordinary man until his wife’s suicide plunges him into depression. Unable to take care of his dog, Brian decides to leave it with Beloved Pets, where he befriends the founder Jasmine Tsang during his visits. Jasmine comes from a rich family and though she lives a worry-free life, she has yet to find its meaning. Under pressure from her family, she agrees to a marriage of convenience. A week before she’s to marry Vincent Lee, who was born with a silver spoon in his mouth, she gets cold feet, partly due to Vincent’s history of womanizing and partly because she can’t get her mind off Brian. On a rainy night, she decides to leave the city and look for Brian in the countryside to find out if he shares her feelings. Only then will she have a reason to try to live the life she wants. Unfortunately, Brian is unwilling to commit. Having been rejected, the heart-broken Jasmine drives home alone when she is attacked and passes out. When she finally comes to, she is shocked to find herself stark naked and locked up in a room. During her confinement, her captor doesn’t seem to sleep at all and she often hears the theme song Nessun Dorma from Puccini’s masterpiece Turandot... [ HONG KONG INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL ] The beautiful yet naive Tsang (Janice Man) has second thoughts about her arranged marriage with the most eligible bachelor in town (Lam Ka-tung) because she is secretly in love with the dog-loving math prodigy Fong (Andy Hui). One night, she is attacked on her way home. She wakes up and finds herself trapped in a room and tied to a bed naked. She was raped but managed to escape, and this leads to murderous outcomes. After the success of last year’s Sara, Herman Yau again teams up with screenwriter Erica Li to create another complex psychological thriller about true love and the choices of life.
