MISCELLANEOUS * (2016/10/12) Don Li Yat Long, Shirley Yeung Szeki, Derek Wong Kin Tung, Tony Ho Wah Chiu, Susan Shaw Yam Yam and Fanny Lee Man Fun yesterday attended their new film YEH MAI CHONG (NIGHT HIDE AND SEEK)'s production start ceremony. Don said that this would be his second film investment, the total of which was in seven figures. It even had advertising sponsors, so it was more relaxing than the first. YEH has three stories. Don and Yeung Szeki perform in one called YEH BOON CHAI HAU MOON (WIFE KNOCKS IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT). Why did he choose to make a supernatural film? Don said, "Because supernatural films are Hong Kong culture. Ghosts are fictional, but they have been scaring me since I was little." He also said that he would direct one of the stories with a lot of bloody scenes. He spent several thousand on fake blood alone. He felt fortunate that the production has gone smoothly and without any supernatural event. However the production has been tough and they were tired out of their minds. Was he confident that he would make the money back? Don confidently said, "The film is pretty low budget, it wouldn't be hard to make back. If we make a profit, everyone gets a bonus." He also revealed that today he will make a third film in the Mainland. He has been very pleased with this year's performance so far. Playing a female ghost for the first time, Yeung Szeki said that she has wanted to play one for a long time. She was scared but she wanted to play one anyway, because she liked ghost films. She thought this time was very fresh. Did she get any lai see? She said no, because she was already dead when the story began. Szeki revealed that the film required a lot of special effect make up as she played a very scary ghost. Some people could not even recognize her, but the special make up gave her a reaction all over her face. Did her costume scare her daughter? Szeki said, "Luckily ach time I went home she was already asleep. Once I wore a costume home. In the lobby I told people not to be afraid, as I haven't removed my make up yet. Co-workers told me to take a taxi home, but which taxi would be willing to pick me up dressed like this. I still drove myself home." Would she let her daughter watch horror films? She said that they might not be suitable for children. * (2016/10/12) The film MISS SUNSHINE (SING NUI KEI YUEN) earlire wrapped up production in Hangzhou. Maggie Cheung Ho Yi and Tse Kwan Ho reunited after ten years because of director Clifton Ko Chi Sum. Cheung Ho Yi said that this time she finally got to play a couple with Tse Kwan Ho, because earlier in EVERLASTING REGRET (CHEUNG HUNG GOR) they did not end up together. However this couple was not easy to play. Two days ago they just shot an argument scene by the West Lake. Ho Yi said that she has fulfilled her wish. In the beginning of the year she even told herself that she wished to make a series next to the West Lake. Originally the scene was scheduled to shoot in Hokkaido, now the change to Hangzhou made her feel like Heaven was fulfilling her wish. Tse Kwan Ho has been working in the Mainland over the past en years and has performed decently. He said that actually when he did not have to work he would rest in Hong Kong. When he got Director Ko's call and learned that he would be able to work with Ho Yi, he agreed right away. He just never expected that everyday began at 5AM. Hangzhou morning temperature has been rather cool and he did not prepared clothes for it. Shirley Yeung Szeki had to dance with Mainland reality show winner Purba Rgyal (Pu Bajia). Szeki felt that Pu Bajia was very handsome and hard working. For the dance scene he even took additional lessons with an instructor. Would Pu Bajia have any intimate scene with Szeki? He stated he was very "excited". * (2016/10/11) Hong Kong Lunar New Year movies have been plentiful in recent years. Next year will be no exception, so far planned for release will be the Jackie Chan starred KUNG FU YOGA, the Nicholas Tse Ting Fung, Jung Yong-Hwa and Ge You starred COOK UP A STORM, the Stephen Chow Sing Chi produced, Tsui Hark directed JOURNEY TO THE WEST 2, the John Woo (Ng Yu Sum) film MANHUNT and the Zhang Yimou directed GREAT WALL. * (2016/10/11) Eric Tsang Chi Wai yesterday attended an organ donation event. Jaime Chik Mei Chun was one of the guests but Chi Wai said that she did not feel well and did not attend. Chi Wai was nominated for the Golden Horse Best Supporting Actor award with the film MAD WORLD (YUT LIM MO MING). His son Derek Tsang Kwok Cheung was SOUL MATE was nominated for Best Director. Chi Wai said that three nights ago he and his son, a group of young writers and directors celebrated. On the 13th both films will be screened at the Hong Kong Asian Film Festival, then they will celebrate more. Chi Wai happily said, "It's better for my son to win than me. Last night I just told (Tony) Leung Ka Fai that it doesn't matter to me anymore. We will form a tour to Taiwan to attend the Golden Horse Award." As for Kwok Cheung's choice to direct, Chi Wai agreed with his son. "Directing is his dream, but at first I urged him to act. Directors at most can only visit other people's sets, but actors can watch what the directors shoot and learn a few tricks." Will he work with his son on another film? Chi Wai said, "Let's see if he will bring me! Lately many people call to congratulate me, but then they ask if they would have a chance to work with my son? He finally "graduated from 'society university'. He doesn't need me to worry anymore!" Will he have daughter in law tea? Chi Wai said, "It doesn't matter, I can go anywhere. There is no need to do all that!" If Kwok Cheung wins will he announce his wedding on the stage? Chi Wai said that he truly did not know. Yesterday would have been his late friend Anita Mui Yim Fong's birthday. Chi Wai said that if the media did not mention it he would have forgotten. He lamented, "It's 13 years already. Even the memorial night that Hok Yau and I held for her was already 3 years ago. Time truly passes by so fast. I almost forgot!" Would he be reminded of some memories of the past? Chi Wai said, "The most important for people is good health, of course the Hong Kong music industry truly lost a lot of luster without Ah Mui and Gor Gor!" * (2016/10/11) The Herman Yau Lai To directed, Gordon Lam Ka Tung, Andy Hui Chi On and Janice Man Wing Shan starred new film NESSUN DORMA (HUNG SAU WAN MEI SHUI) will not open in Hong Kong until the 27th, but yesterday it already won an Indigo Moon Film Festival award. On Jai said, "I am very happy to hear the news, it is the result of the entire team! We will guard the Hong Kong post and promote even harder." * (2016/10/10) Artists Rachel Chau Ka Lei and Lemon Yip Chi Yu yesterday attended Master Checkley Sin Kwok Lam's Wing Chun contest and were the goodwill ambassador of the event. Ka Lei said that she would no match for the competitors so she could only be a guest. Chi Yu had a Tae Kwan Do black belt, participated in and judged Wing Chun contests before. Speaking of their on screen work, they revealed that earlier they worked on a film with Eric Suen Yiu Wai, which will be released in November. Chi Yu will be the lead actress. Ka Lei said, "It's my first movie. I have been the host many times before. I really learned a lot from making a movie! I am very disappointed! I thought that with the rare opportunity to work with Suen Yiu Wai I would have a few intimate scenes, but I didn't even get to hold hands!" * (2016/10/10) Shawn Yue Man Lok and Hins Cheung King Hin attended the Hong Kong Formula Electric Racing event, along with Leon Lai Ming, Carina Lau Ka Ling, Wong Cho Lam and his wife. Lok Jai was asked about his super sport car purchase, he avoided the subject while Hin Jai joked that he was very envious of him. Lok Jai changed the subject and talked about his new film LOVE OFF THE CUFF (CHUN GIU GAU JI MING). He said that he was very happy about the entire film being shot in Hong Kong this time, but he hoped that the director would give him the script as soon as possible. He revealed that this film originally planned to shoot at three locations, but all three had problems. Thus the director had a headache as he considered whether he needed to change the script. * (2016/10/10) The film SPECIAL FEMALE FORCE (LAT GAING BA WONG FA) yesterday held its Macau premiere. Eliza Sam Lai Heung, Jeana Ho Pui Yu, and Anita Chui Bik Ka attended. Heung Heung said that she has already seen the film, but her boyfriend has not. She smiled and asked everyone not to keep mentioning him. Heung Heung said that her character was different from her usual nice girl characters, not only a little mean but also often scolded people. However she said that she did not need to find anyone to practice with beforehand. Chui Bik Ka revealed that everyone was wearing extra small sized clothing to create a sexy look. Heung Heung said that figure was Chui Bik Ka's strong suit. She was not too bad herself, but Heung Heung said, "Don't joke! When a group of girls fight it would feel a little sexy, but actually every character has a different personality." Her close friend Linda Chung Ka Yun revealed that she will return to Hong Kong at the end of the year. Heung Heung said that Ka Yun really liked to work in show business and had her own plans. She was not sure whether she would bring her daughter back with her. Chui Bik Ka said that because her co-stars were more petite, she had to wear extra small clothing to coordinate. Thus the result was more obvious. Speaking of her floating platform scene, Chui Bik Ka who played Amy Yip Chi Mei's character admitted it hurt a little. That scene took over ten takes. Did she ask anyone to apply Dit Da Jow? She said, "I was afraid that no one would be willing, since I don't have a boyfriend yet." Jeana praised Chui Bik Ka's figure as more amazing than Yip Chi Mei's. During the shoot did she take a peek? She said, "Guys or girls would very naturally look. I witnessed that they were very firm, her figure was great." Jeana said that her boyfriend Philip Yung Tsz Kwong permitted her to be sexy, but he is now working on a film in the Mainland. They will not see each other for 3 months. She said that her boyfriend would not look at other girls and thus she was not worried that he would look at the other girls in the film. She said confidently, "Let's see who is better, haha!" * (2016/10/10) Gordon Lam Ka Tung and Jacky Cai Jie yesterday attended their new film NESSUN DORMA (HUNG SAU WAN MEI SHUI) ladies' screening audience appreciation event. In the film Ka Tung had to first hit Janice Man Wing Shan than raped Cai Jie, which he said was a little extreme. He would understand the reaction from female viewers. Was he afraid that his new film performance would scare female viewers? He said, "I expected that. I hope female viewers wouldn't attack me. Because the character's sexual orientation is greedier, he wants to rape people whether they are men or women. Some scenes have been removed because they were too extreme. The director didn't want the audience to be exhausted from watching and finally removed them." Ka Tung said that during the shoot he took wardrobe malfunction precautions. Although he worked hard on the scene, he would respect the film company's decision to remove the scene in the end. Cai Jie admitted that she would not watch the movie with her boyfriend. She said that she was not afraid of it being awkward. If her boyfriend wanted to watch the movie he could buy his own ticket. The scene was all a part of the job. * (2016/10/09) Bob Lam Sing Bun recently worked on a trailer for his film LUCKY FAT MAN (NGOR YIU FAT DAT), which earlier he posted on his social media accounts. In the film he played two characters, the dialogue of which revolved around wanting to win the lottery and get rich. The bright spot however was the foul language! A mobster Bob pointed a gun at a restaurant owner Bob and said, "If I don't win the lottery soon, I won't be X named Lam Sing Bun!" Bob shared the trailer online and was asked about the film's release date. "This trailer was shot in addition. Director Yip Lim Sum (Patrick Kong) wants to try something new, so he parodied the film COLD WAR. The foul language line was exactly like one of (Tony) Leung Ka Fai's. (Getting serious with the trailer with the foul language?) All for promoting the film! I hope no one would mind!" * (2016/10/09) The 21st Busan International Film Festival earlier opened officially. 301 films from 69 nations and regions would participate in this event. The Emperor Motion Pictures and Malaysia's Sonneratia Capital invested action film MRS. K, its stars Kara Wai Ying Hung, director Ho Yuhang and producer Lorna Tee (Cheng Pik Suet) were invited to attend. Two nights ago at the film screening, Wai Ying Hung announced to the 900 viewers on hand, "This is my last action film!" Ho Yuhang directed, Lorna Tee produced, Wai Ying Hung, Simon Yam Tat Wa and Taiwan singer Wu Bai starred in the film MRS. K. During the Busan Film Festival, two screenings would be held. The venue had 900 tickets, all of which vanished within 15 minutes online. Actually Wai Ying Hung had many action films that were screened there and received high praises; lead actor Yam Tat Wa has worked with Gianna Jun on THE THIEVES, so he also had a lot of fans in Korea. No wonder the tickets were gone so quickly! Wai Ying Hung, director Ho Yuhang and producer Lorna Tee promoted nonstop there. They not only appeared on the red carpet but also at the two screenings and many media interviews. At the screening two nights ago, wai Ying Hung, director Ho Yuhang and producer Lorna Tee met with 900 viewers. The response was overwhelming. A Hong Kong viewer flew to Busan for a first glimpse at Sister Hung's performance. Ho Yuhang said that he reunited with Wai Ying Hung after AT THE END OF DAYBREAK (SUM MOR). "Sister Hung was the top female action star at the Shaw Brothers golden age. This time we made MRS. K in order to find 'action actress wai Ying Hung'. I hope everyone would enjoy watching it!" Rarely making action films in recent years, Wai Ying Hung brought a surprising decision with her. "Due to age, I hope this will be my final action film." For this character, Wai Ying Hung trained in Malaysia before the shoot and performed all of her own stunts in the film. Although she injured her leg and hip, she did not want to give the audience an impression of "being cheated". In the end she still grind her teeth and endured. Later Wai Ying Hung revealed her plans further. "If I don't make any more action films, I want to make more drama, heart warming small budget films like HAPPINESS (HUNG WON SI NGOR). I will retire at age 60 then focus on painting." * (2016/10/09) Philip Ng Won Lung and Allan Zeman two nights ago attended a Japanese restaurant opening. Ng Won Lung said that before the event he was still rehearsing drums with Benjamin Yuen Wai Ho for the Po Leung charity show. Because the drums required energy from the entire body and was different from kung fu, he was sore all over from the practice. Ng Won Lung in the film BIRTH OF THE DRAGON played Bruce Lee. The film recently was screened in Canada and received good reviews from the Chinese community there. While promoting in Canada he was also interviewed on the radio. Viewers praised his resemblance to Bruce Lee when he spoke, fought and with his gestures. He admitted that this time everyone worked very hard and he truly felt proud of the film. He revealed that recently he has been in negotiation for foreign films, all the interests came from after seeing him in BIRTH OF THE DRAGON. Would h have less time to see his rumored girlfriend Moon Lau Pui Yuet? He said that since returning from Canada he has not seen her since they were both busy. However they would exchange texts. "We are friends, sometimes we would have dinner together." Has their relationship faded? Ng Won Lung said, "we are friends, no problem, I would understand that the audience like us as a couple in the series!" * (2016/10/08) The Wilson Chin Kwok wai directed, Charlie Wong Wing Fung and Paco Wong produced new film SPECIAL FEMALE FORCE (LAT GAING BA WONG FA) will open next Thursday. The story continues from the 80s classic THE INSPECTOR WEARS SKIRTS, with a new group of female cadets fighting from the beginning to the end. In one scene Eliza Sam Lai Heung, Jeana Ho Pui Yu, Joyce Cheng Yun Yi, Anita Chui Bik Ka, Mandy Ho Pui Man and Jacky Cai Jie had to fight individually and as a group on a floating platform in a swimming pool. Anita admitted that the floating platform fight scene was hard to stand on. "With all the action we often had bad takes, as it was very easy to slip and fall. We fought and fell into the water, then we had to keep on fighting in the water." * (2016/10/07) Eliza Sam Lai Heung in her first debut, the action film SPECIAL FEMALE FORCE (LAT GAING BA WONG FA), not only had a series of fight scenes but also a group shower scene with Anita Chui Bik Ka, Jeana Ho Pui Yu, Cathryn Lee Yuen LIng and Joyce Cheng Yun Yi. Heung Heung took wardrobe malfunction precautions and said that the shoot was not awkward at all. "This scene was shot close to the end of the production, so we were very familiar with each other already. In addition the scene wasn't selling sexy but sisterhood and a little aesthetic, like going to the public swimming pool! (Who do you think has the best figure?) Everyone is great, we all have our specialty!" Chui Bik Ka said that she used tape to prevent wardrobe malfunction and joked that she had plenty of experience in "group shower". "I really like to swim when I was little, I always went to the pool with my girl friends. At the time we were little, to save them we showered in one bathroom." Chui Bik Ka said that during the shoot they were originally sharing a bottle of shampoo. "Someone dropped it, but to keep the take good we could only pretend to keep passing it." Ho Pui Yu was asked whose figure was the most attractive. She humbly said, "I only know that mine is the worse. For this movie I trained very hard and gained a dozen or so pounds. Mine probably was the worst." Cheng Yun Yi is busy with her Kowloon Bay International Trade and Exhibition Center concert rehearsals. Earlier she went to France for her new music video. She revealed that the director had a fear of heights. "We were shooting on the ferris wheel, when he got up there he turned all pale." * (2016/10/07) Aaron Kwok Fu Sing, Miriam Yeung Chin Wa, Archie Gao, JW Joey Wong Ho Yi, Gaile Lok, Maggie Siu Mei Kei, William So Wing Hong, Qi Qi, Stephanie Au, James Ng Yip Kwan and Pakho Chau dressed up for an event at Central. Soon to play "Cherie" for the third time, Yeung Chin Wa revealed that for the role she has been working hard on getting into shape and said with jealousy that her male co-star did not have too much trouble. She said that she had to "fight alone". She revealed that she will soon have to perform in the film LOVE OFF THE CUFF (CHUN GIU GAU JI MING) and thus has been working hard to lose weight and appear in even better shape. This will be the third film and four years after the previous film, but the time in the story was not too far apart. The guys could be mature and the girls had to age in reverse, thus this time Chin Wa was "pickier" with her weight loss. She had to be able to lose 4 more kilograms. However she would not need to lose as much as her concert preparation. In her film SHE REMEMBERS, HE FORGETS (NA YUT TIN NGOR MOON WUI FEI), Cecilia So Lai Shan who played the young Chin Wa broke up with Neo Yau Hawk Sau. Chin Wa said that she did not notice and only learned about it from the media. Chin Wa said, "I shouldn't talk too much about other people's private lives. They are still young, it is a life experience for them!" Speaking of their companies pressuring them to take their romance underground, Chin Wa said, "That's out now, instead it's a rush to get married. No one wants to drag their feet. The best would be having a baby as soon as possible. If I met Mr. Ting ten years earlier, I could have had the next generation even sooner!" Kwok Fu Sing came with the PORT OF CALL (DAP HUET CHUM MUI) team including director Philip Yung Tsz Kwong, Siu Mei Kei and Elaine Jin (Kam Yin Ling). The film will represent Hong Kong in competition for the Best Foreign Film Oscar nomination. Sing Sing happily said, "Of course I feel very honored. Whether we win or not, it is a huge encouragement to Hong Kong film." As for rumors of him marrying his girlfriend next year, Sing Sing responded, "It's all false, I will tell everyone when I have good news." Would he get married in a flash like Shu Qi? He answered, "I don't know, I am very low key. It works with my personality. When I have good news I will tell everyone." * (2016/10/07) The crime film HEARTFALL ARISES (GAING SUM POR) has been scheduled for a October 20th release with two Best Actors Nicholas Tse Ting Fung and Sean Lau Ching Wan as its stars. The film was shot on many locations including Hong Kong, Shanghai, Thailand and Taipei. A heart pounding chase scene was performed in Thailand. Playing a detective, Tse Ting Fung in order to capture an armed robber on the streets of Thailand personally performed a car chase. Ting Fung even suggested no rehearsal and shot directly for the most realistic emotions. The director in the end accepted Ting Fung's suggestion and the result was great. The director said, "I have heard that Ting Fung was serious with his acting. I didn't realize how far a professional actor's work ethics can go until I personally experienced it. Actually the producer gave me a scolding over this, saying that I neglected the safety of the actors because they had no rehearsal. We captured the actors' emotions from their first car chase. If the actors had any accident, it would be more than I could handle. Luckily in the end everyone was fine." Ting Fung said, "Only such a production result is the most realistic and brings the most thrilling scenes one after another. For the film everyone choose to give their all." Another actor in the car chase Shaun Tam Chun Yin said, "The director and Ting Fung's seriousness truly surprised me, but at the time I really can't do anything else. On one hand is the dignity of men, and on the other the professionalism of actors. So I like them gave my all." * (2016/10/06) Artists Eliza Sam Lai Heung, Joyce Cheng Yun Yi, Jeana Ho Pui Yu and Anita Chui Bik Ka in the new film SPECIAL FEMALE FORCE (LAT GAING BA WONG FA) had a series of action scenes. Heung Heung said that on the first day of work she already suffered a leg injury, then she got hurt in a fight scene with "the Malaysian Louis Koo". She was even all swollen from bug bites. She said although it was tough, the shoot was rather pleasant. Yun Yi said that they became sisters and would invite them to her concert. Heung Heung said, "I will help by putting up posters on the streets." Yun Yi kept replying with thank you in appreciation. Jeana said that they were as close as sisters but they also stood their ground at times as well. While shooting in Malaysia they fought over the massage therapist. She also said that the most memorable was all the "dangers" while working at the dam. "A lot of leeches were there, no matter how we tried to get rid of them more of them were still there. I was pretty worried about them getting inside our pants!" * (2016/10/06) The film OPERATION MEKONG two nights ago held its premiere. Zhang Hanyu was full of confidence about the box office. He hoped that it would make over 1.2 billion yuan. He was also prepare to celebrate like a man. Lam Chiu Yin said that with the good box office performance, the boss should take care of the team. He also said that Zhang Hanyu probably had a lot of Wagyu beef while working in Japan, if he could bring some back that would be decent as well. During the shoot the actors suffered, but Zhang Hanyu and Peng Yu-Yan both thought the film was worth their effort and they had a lot of fun with their performance. Will they follow up with a sequel? Lam Chiu Yin pointed out that both were very busy as their schedules have already been booked for two years. Lam Chiu Yin said that Peng Yu-Yan actually shot two different endings. Earlier everyone will be able to see them online. Peng Yu-Yan said, "I have worked with the director three times. The first time I only had to ride a bicycle so I wore only flimsy bicycle shorts, this time I finally had the chance to perform his expertise of gun fight. It was also the first time I had so much clothes to wear!" * (2016/10/06) Four time Golden Horse Best Supporting Actress Wang Lai passed away on the 28th at the age of 89. TA KUNG PAO, OCTOBER 7 2016, THE WEEK IN FILM STORKS' BOX OFFICE IS SLIGHTLY WORSE THAN EXPECTED Last week the National Day Golden Week increased the Mainland box office substantially, but the Hong Kong box office performance was only average. With seven new releases, the Tim Burton directed MISS PEREGRINE'S HOME FOR PECULIAR CHILDREN was the highest grossing with HK$ 10.28 million; the disaster film DEEPWATER HORIZON made HK$ 4.62 million; instead the family animated film STORKS only made HK$ 2.4 million, which was somewhat disappointing. In the Mainland, Zhang Yibai who made a name for himself with CURIOSITY KILLS THE CAT released his new film I BELONGED TO YOU. With a strong cast that included Deng Chao, Bai Baike, and Yang Yang, the film opened in advanced last Thursday and made 311.14 million RMB in first place; the film was Beijing Enlight distributed and became Enlight's second highest grossing release this year. The first was the July animated film BIG FISH AND BEGONIA with 566.85 million RMB; another April romantic film release YESTERDAY ONCE MORE made 178.61 million in third place. The "Post 80s" writer turned director Guo Jingming's new film L.O.R.D: LEGEND OF RAVAGING DYANSTIES had an even stronger cast with Fan Bingbing, Kris Wu Yifan, Cheney Chen Xuedong, William Chan Wai Ting, Amber Kuo and Mini Yang Mi. Opening last Friday, it made 197.37 million RMB in second place; Hong Kong director Dante Lam Chiu Yin's return to the crime genre, OPERATION MEKONG starred Eddie Peng Yu-Yan and Zhang Hanyu. Also opening last Friday, it made 165.11 million RMB in third place; the Andy Lau Tak Wa and Huang Xiaoming starred, Wong Jing directed MISSION MILANO made 106.68 million RMB in fourth place. Four new films made 780 million RMB, 84% of last week's total box office (919.21 million RMB). Aside from I BELONGED TO YOU, the other three's box office was rather evenly split. In its third week, CHINESE ODYSSEY 3 made 21.29 million RMB in fifth place. Over three weeks it accumulated 360.57 million RMB; the Derek Tsang Kwok Cheung directed SOUL MATE made 21.18 million RMB in sixth place, over three weeks it made 162.77 million RMB. Seemingly its word of mouth was decent. In the U.S. two Chinese films were released, one was the Mainland box office champion I BELONGED TO YOU. At 50 cinemas it made US$ 310,000 in twenty-third place; OPERATION MEKONG was screened on 25 screens and made US$ 85,000 in thirty-eighth place. - LAM KAM BO 2. TA KUNG PAO, OCTOBER 6 2016, ASIAN FILMS DIFFERENT FROM TRAIN TO BUSAN, SEOUL STATION ASSAULTS WITH HEAVY SORROW Korean director Yeon Sang-Ho's TRAIN TO BUSAN kept growing stronger in its Hong Kong release, as it first broke the Korean film box office record, the zombie film record, then the Asian film in Hong Kong box office record. In other words, this movie that has so far made HK$ 60 million has already surpassed all Asian films including Hong Kong films. With the success of this film, the film company naturally had its eyes on the director's other films. Thus his animated film SEOUL STATION was released in Hong Kong as well, appearing as a supplement to TRAIN TO BUSAN. - HUNG KWONG As its title implied, SEOUL STATION's story began at the Seoul Station. On the night before the father and the daughter in TRAIN TO BUSAN got on the train, a homeless person collapsed in front of the Seoul Station then rapidly transformed into a zombie. The station instantly turned into Hell on Earth. The zombies rapidly spread, as a young girl who ran away from home witnessed the zombie in action. She took money from work and went to look for her boyfriend. However her failure of a boyfriend posted her information online in an attempt to find clients for her to escort online. Thus she ran out again, not expecting that not only there was no place for her to hide but also running into zombies......on the other hand, her boyfriend and her "father" were looking for her. This "father" was only her boss at work. The boss was angry about her taking off with the company's money and realized that her boyfriend posted her information online. Thus he called to set up a meeting, pretending to be her father...... The Homeless Is Abandoned Like TRAIN TO BUSAN, SEOUL STATION actually was not about zombies. The film had a memorable beginning, two seemingly educated young people openly discussed unfair inequalities of society. When they saw a seemingly sick old man passed by, they wanted to help. When they realized he was homeless, they immediately left due to his odor. When the old man's brother looked for help after his collapse, both the social worker and the police refused. The film displayed a rather critical point of view, whether the authorities or the educated who on the surface cared about the weak none of them were good.....as the zombies grew in number, first the police then the military took action. They locked up both civilians and zombies to cover all the bases. Thus, the living was trapped without any means to escape. They not only had to escape the bites of zombies but also the bullets of the military. Yeon Sang-Ho's animation took an rough and simple artistic style, its color pallet was dark. Such not so pleasing visuals might be drastically different from the American and Japanese animated blockbusters that the audience was used to, but were very suitable to the theme of the story. By the end of the film, few survived and had no rescue. The boyfriend finally died in the hands of her "father", and the girl turned zombie ate her "father". Form this ending we could see that the so-called "prequel" at least character wise had no connection to TRAIN TO BUSAN. The actress who provided the voice to the girl was the one who played the infected that escaped to the train in TRAIN TO BUSAN, but any guess that they were the same character would be off. The premiere of both films were only a month apart, one was in April in Busan and the other in May in Cannes. Animation's production time was far longer than the live action film. Thus although the prequel started production first, in the end both films were released around the same time. Not A Single Good Man Actually, the two films should be seen as films that shared different points of view of the world without any connection in time. According to the SEOUL STATION story, the train station would have been in lockdown long ago. On the day of TRAIN TO BUSAN the father and the daughter could not possibly have gone to the train station, not to mention getting on the express. Thus, these two films were only different films with similar genre zombies. The story happened in "parallel worlds". Of course, aside from the impossibility in the story, the biggest difference between the two films was the seemingly opposite points of view of the world. While TRAIN TO BUSAN kept praising patriarchic action, it became the target of continuous ridicule in SEOUL STATION. The film did not have a single good man in it! Perhaps, this type of opposing world views was the reason why the two films' box office performance was Heaven and Earth apart. Only, if the two films were not released so close to each other and if SEOUL STATION could have been released earlier, would even more viewers pay attention to that cruel and tragic world? The writer believed that it would be more likely. 3. TA KUNG PAO, OCTOBER 6 2016, LIGHT SHADOW PATH TRAIN TO BUSAN IS MORE COMMERCIAL THAN ITS PREQUEL TRAIN TO BUSAN has become the highest grossing Asian film in Hong Kong, breaking the Chinese film box office record that COLD WAR 2 (HONG JIN II) just earned. The film company thus tried to a "few pounds more" and released TRAIN TO BUSAN's prequel animation SEOUL STATION, unfortunately the performance has been average and a little unexpected. Actually the box office performance of these two film more or less reflected the importance of the most key elements in commercial films. SEOUL STATION is an animation, the technology of which visually was more behind the times. Although it was still quite a meaningful film that in addition on a certain level reflected the dark side of society. Full of grievance, the film lacked hope. In the film the boyfriend sold his girlfriend; the female protagonist could not go home, the uncle who was running from the zombies had no home to return to. A large group of people in the lower class received a variety of discriminations. As the government closed in on the zombies, it also did not permit the people to leave the area out of fear that they would infect others. It rules with an iron fist. In the end the protagonists either died or became zombies. The film was shocking, but the feeling "when you leave" was not a good one as it was grudge filled. TRAIN TO BUSAN was called SEOUL STATION's sequel. Although I do not know how its production process was, I have reasons to believe that it learned from the SEOUL STATION performance and improved upon it in order to achieve even higher commercial success. SEOUL STATION was heavy in accusations, denouncing the society, the government and human nature. TRAIN TO BUSAN gave that another push, displaying human behavior that was even more horrifying than zombies. If not for the selfishness of human nature in extremes, TRAIN would not have worked at all. TRAIN's sharpness was different from SEOUL STATION, as its protagonists were no longer the dark figures in society (call girls, night spot bosses and pimps) but ordinary people. One of the protagonists was the Gong Yoo played financial manager, one of the upper crust. However the director through the uncle character pointed out that this financial manager was a "vampire", which Gong Yoo's daughter was already used to. How can "vampires" among us" not be terrifying? The imbalance of society and the conflict between the wealth gap remained in TRAIN, but even greater conflict came from the selfishness of humanity. In order to survive, the passengers on the train for their own safety isolated the possibly infected whether they were already or not, this part was the real "meat" of the movie. The selfish Gong Yoo through various obstacles finally understood that people should not be selfish and out of self interest, the uncle who supplanted the possibly infected was himself infected. You cannot always get what you want (which actually was the screen writer's intention). Both characters would die tragically anyway, but commercial film (especially Hollywood)'s iron rule was the ending had to have hope. The hope in this film was that the little girl and the pregnant woman survived. The feeling that you left with was much better than SEOUL STATION's. - TIN LIK [ In Production Now/Soon ] LOVE OFF THE CUFF Can : Chun Giu Gau Ji Ming Lit : Cherie Saves Jimmy d. [ HONG KONG MOVIE 6 ] Louis Luo, Chairman of a technology group, is a wealthy entrepreneur in town. Yet underneath this camouflage, he is a martial arts master whose ancestors were goodwill thieves who rob from the rich for charitable intentions. With the beneficent genes inherited from his forefathers, he often fights against injustice and collaborates with the police to fight crimes. A university in Switzerland funded by Louis has successfully invented the “Seed of God”, a remarkable invention that enhances harvest on the most barren lands in just one minute. During a test demonstration, while Louis is amazed at how the “Seed of God” can put an end to famine, he can also foresee how it will drive agricultural societies into bankruptcy. Snow, leader of an international crime conglomerate "Crescent", raids the scene with her protégé, Phoenix. Equipped with high-tech sonic weapons, they seize the “Seed of God” and abduct its inventor. Interpol sends Sir Sampan Hung to work with Louis in a joint effort to retrieve the “Seed of God”. Somehow in the course of the chase, Louis and Bo have become grudge mates. Accompanied by Louis’ assistant, Amon and his sister, Ka-yan, they get into a fierce wit and fist game with “Crescent” and an even more powerful terrorist group “Kmax”. The battle field spans across Macau, Hong Kong and Milan. Finally, with the help of a mysterious undercover, they manage to recover the "Seed of God" from a laboratory in Milan through a series of deadly traps. Unfortunately, the mastermind of Kmax, Sir Condor captures Louis’ mother, and threatens Louis with his mother’s life in exchange for the "Seed of God". Louis and his companions travel as far as Eastern Europe, Kmax terrorists’ base, to rescue his mother who is held capture on a transport aircraft. So, what will be the fate of the "Seed of God”? Golden Triangle is one of the three main opium supplies in the world - located where the unrestricted border regions between Burma, Laos and Thailand converge along the Mekong River. Under the Chinese government’s suppression, Golden Triangle’s heroin supply has greatly declined. The rise of ‘ice’ however brings back the ascendancy of Golden Triangle and it quickly becomes a battlefield at the Mekong River. On 5th October 2011, thirteen dead bodies of Chinese shipmen are found, blindfolded with hands tied, on the Mekong River. The Thai military also discovers 900 thousand pieces of ice drug on two Chinese merchant vessels. The Chinese government assigns Officer Ko and his team to investigate the case in Thailand. Fong, a farm owner and an intelligence agent, knows that the ice drug found on the vessels belongs to a drug lord’s gang member and is imputed to the Chinese shipmen. He later discovers the mastermind behind the massacre – Law, a notorious drug lord who has a strong military force and operates in and out of the Golden Triangle. In order to arrest Law, Thailand, Laos, Burma and China work together with an unspoken rule among themselves: the country that captures Law will be his jurisdiction. Fong and Ko’s teams use all means to track down Law. Ko and his team infiltrate into Law’s troop in the hope of taking down his stronghold. Fong lays a trap as an undercover, not realizing Law has found out his true identity and in the ensuing firefight, Law’s military force has slaughtered most of Ko’s men. In the aftermath of Fong’s wrongful intelligence, Ko discovers Fong’s untold secret and his true intention in the field. Once and for all, could Ko unveil Golden Triangle’s iron curtain and seek justice for the shipmen? ------ GLOBAL CHINESE MUSIC CHART For the week starting October 8 2016 15 LET IT GO Eric Chou (Chow Hing Jik) https://youtu.be/K9Ft0R-411s 14 SOUND SHOWED Can : Sing Yum So Liu C AllStar https://youtu.be/pk1XIYCjJp0 13 IF WE MEET AGAIN Can : Yu Gor Joi Gein Weibird Wei (Wai Lai On) https://youtu.be/Dl3V5OBQNRk 12 EVER AFTER Can : Chung Chi Yi Hau Kris Wu (Ng Yik Fan) https://youtu.be/l3rcVWLoCXM 11 FAILURE AT LOVE Can : Oi Ching Fai Chai Jay Chou (Chow Kit Lun) https://youtu.be/2kdYSeoHChg 10 MISMATCHED SOCKS Can : Yuen Yeung Muk Joey Yung Cho Yi https://youtu.be/Osqrr9nOOKk 9 SWEET CHILD O' MINE Can : Choi Hung Gum Gong Stefanie Sun Yanzi https://youtu.be/wTr_BwrYElo 8 BRIGHTEST STAR IN THE NIGHT SKY Can : Yeh Hung Jung Jui Leung Dik Sing G.E.M. I’ve wanted to make a digital version for a long time" - Park Chan-wook The key work of New Korean Cinema and the winner of Grand Jury Prize at Cannes, earning praise from the jury president Quentin Tarantino, Oldboy was responsible for catapulting Park Chan-wook’s international career, and came to symbolize the creativity of Korean cinema to a generation of movie buffs. Based on the Japanese manga of the same name, Oldboy follows a middle-aged business man Oh Dae-su (Choi Min-sik), who is abducted and held captive in a motel room, not knowing who imprisoned him or why. 15 years later, he’s suddenly released, and consumed by the thirst for revenge, starts looking for answers. The new 2K digital remaster, with color correction, elimination of scratches and dust, and new English-language subtitles, was supervised by director Park for the occasion of Oldboy’s 10th anniversary theatrical re-release in South Korea in 2013. Renowned for his explosive visuals and dynamic storytelling, he is a director who continually challenges and defies expectations. An ardent cinephile, Park juggled film directing and criticism in the 1990s before his commercial breakthrough Joint Security Area (JSA) in 2000, which broke local box office records and screened in competition at Berlin Film Festival. However, it was with his critically acclaimed follow-up Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance in 2002 that he established the intense, relentless cinematic style for which he is now renowned. After the success and worldwide recognition of Oldboy (2003), his follow-up features Lady Vengeance (2005, Venice competition), I’m a Cyborg but that’s OK (2006, Berlin competition) and Thirst (2009, Cannes competition), further demonstrated Park’s cinematic and thematic range. He then went onto make his first English language feature Stoker (2013), a Fox Searchlight film starring Nicole Kidman, Mia Wasikowska and Matthew Goode, further cementing his status as an important global auteur. In The Handmaiden, which is inspired by Sarah Waters’ historical crime novel Fingersmith (2002), Park returns to Korea for one of his most ambitious productions yet. In this latest work he continues to display the bold and innovative approach to storytelling and visuals that has made him internationally famous.
