APPLE DAILY, AUGUST 27 2016, GOOD FILM STYLE LEGCO ELECTION FINAL STRETCH RELEASE DOMESTIC HOT BLOODED FILMS URGE HONG KONG PEOPLE TO BE SELF SUFFICIENT The Legislative Council General Election will take place on September 4th. This year will not only be between the Pro-establishment and democracy, but the domestic camp has also given rise to a Hong Kong independence thinking that is about to take off. Coincidentally, during the key campaign final stretch of August, three different subject but all implied community and livelihood topic films were released. Early in the month was THE MENU (DOH FOR SUN MUN SIN), which was about the suppressed people finally exploding. In the middle of the month was the surrounded and trapped in city CALL OF HEROES (NGAI SING). The month would wrap up with the Sino-British Joint Declaration background WEEDS ON FIRE (DIM NG BO). Some veteran film critics predicted that as the social displeasure climate rose, so would more and more films of this type. Even TVB re-runs the god series WHEN HEAVEN BURNS (TIN YU DEI) to join in the fun. - HO WING NING The new director Chan Chi Fat directed film WEEDS ON FIRE was an authentic Hong Kong housing estate kid story, inspiring was the film's addition of footage from the umbrella movement two years ago. The story took place in 1984, the year when the Sino-British Joint Declaration was signed. In the sensitive August, many had an added association. Chan Chi Fat said in an interview earlier, "When the shoot began the movement (umbrella movement) just started, the process took place simultaneously. When (the shoot) finished the movement did as well. In the end I decided to document that video as a document of time. I made the connection of this era to the 80s because the umbrella movement was closely related to every Hong Kong person. The film's 1984 was when the Joint Declaration was signed, which also affected every Hong Kong person. The young people at the time had no idea what Hong Kong would be like in the future, to the movement that young people started now. Through the two generations' close connection, I brought out the witness of the future. It was what the film wanted to say the most." Chan Chi Fat: Belief Needs To Be Persisted Chan Chi Fat said that the documentary was shot in a lot of rush because the movement was about to be cleared. At the end of the film Jan Lamb Hoi Fung narrated, "Do you have the courage to take this half a step?" The director said it was a persistence of belief. "Belief needs to be persisted. Maybe at that moment it wasn't accomplished. When you lose a game, you aren't guaranteed to lose the next one. With some things as long as you keep persisting with your beliefs, I believe there still is a chance." He hoped to be able to send that line to each Hong Kong person, but he has not thought about politicizing the film. He only causally added something he liked to it. "First this film has no commercial investor pressure. At the time no one cared about whatever I did. Whatever I liked to add I could freely say. The end credit even stressed 'The British Hong Kong government named the Sand Martin Bridge'." In addition, CALL OF HEROES' director Chan Muk Sing stated that CALL purely raised the commercial banner. "The message of the film is about justice. It has as much of it as everyone can sense. The film world is like this. When the audience can relate, it is theirs." He said that a line in the film said that justice needs people to execute it, just talking about it is useless. Veteran Film Critic: Clearly Reflects The People's Displeasure veteran film critic Pierre earlier in a phone interview agreed that more films that reflected the current conditions have appeared in recent years. "More movies with domesticism or is based in Hong Kong have appeared, especially in the past two years the topic has become very hot in the film industry. It isn't limited to the filmmaker level. They all want to put their views on society into their films, injecting their current views, future projection and past nostalgia of Hong Kong into their films." He said that even the audience responded to this type of domesticism films strongly, very clearly reflecting the people's growing displeasure at the Hong Kong government. "I believe aside from the 3 films WEEDS ON FIRE, CALL OF HEROES and THE MENU, and the earlier TEN YEARS, either people's call to remove Leung Chun Ying has been strengthen or the pro-establishment idea has been solidified." Hong Kong political pundit Ma Ngok yesterday on the phone said that he has seen the film CALL OF HEROES. He felt that the growth of similar films in recent years was related to the filmmakers' desire to reflect social changes and express their own views. "Actually if CALL OF HEROES is looked at from China's point of view, maybe the situation is similar." [ Metaphor Movie ] THE MENU, CALL OF HEROES Manifest Justice This month is the LegCo election campaign's final stretch, coincidentally Hong Kong has 3 film releases that are metaphors for the society and livelihood problems. WEEDS ON FIRE Story: In the 80s Lam Yiu Sing and Wu Chi Tung, two housing estate kids, changed their fate with their perseverance. Lamb Hoi Fung narrated, "Winning and Losing actually isn't the most important, the most important is whether you have the courage to take this half a step?" Metaphor: The film opened and closed with footage of the Umbrella Movement to contrast the year the story took place, 1984 when the Sino- British Joint Declaration was signed in a contrast of the best and the worst. "Taking this half a step" in an election year brought endless association. CALL OF HEROES Story: Sean Lau Ching Wan was the Pucheng defense team leader, Wu Jing in order to save the villager slaughtering marshal Louis Koo Tin Lok surrounded the town with a massive show of force. Passerby Eddie Peng Yu-Yan lent a hand in defending the town. Metaphor: Pucheng in the film was referred to as a snapshot of the current Hong Kong. Under silencing, assimilation and domestic marginalization, the film encouraged Hong Kong people to remain united for justice to be executed. THE MENU Story: Ng Man Tat's daughter was raped and murdered. Due to the culprit's family background, the witness was forced to change the testimony. Justice could not be served. Without any way to appeal his grievance, the kind Brother Tat became a vicious mad bomber. Metaphor: Brother Tat represents the average Hong Kong person. Under the suppression of injustice and power, kind people are made to take dangerous turns. At the same time it explains the source for the rise of domesticism and Hong Kong independence. Note: All three films are currently in release. 2. TA KUNG PAO, AUGUST 26 2016, ONE WEEK IN FILM AND TELEVISION LINE WALKER HEATS UP IN ITS MAINLAND RELEASE With summer vacation nearing its end, last week eight new films were released in Hong Kong. Among them CALL OF HEROES (NGAI SING) performed the best with HK$ 4.18 million; the horror film LIGHTS OUT made HK$ 2.44 million; the super large scale production BEN-HUR made HK$ 2.05 million, seemingly the audience did not accept this new version; even worse was the comedy MIKE AND DAVE NEED WEDDDING DATES, which made HK$ 960,000; and the animated film KUBO AND THE TWO STRINGS, which made HK$ 460,000. In addition, the animated film ROBINSON CRUSOE made HK$ 380,000; the Tom Hanks starred A HOLOGRAM FOR THE KING made HK$ 250,000; the Japanese animated film I WANT TO LET YOU KNOW THAT I LOVE YOU made HK$ 110,000. As for the Mainland box office, LINE WALKER (SI TOH HUNG JEH) remained popular. With 240.17 million RMB it was on the top of the box office chart, over two weeks it accumulated 479.4 million RMB. TVB series A FIST WITHIN FOUR WALLS produced Jazz Boon (Man Wai Hung)'s directing debut performed unexpectedly well, obviously talented television people might not be limited to development in the idiot box. Now many outstanding filmmakers started on television, including big directors Tsui Hark, Ann Hui On Wa and Johnnie To Kei Fung. The Zhao Tianyu directed, Jing Boran and AngelaBaby starred LOVE O2O made 100.85 million RMB in second place. Over two weeks it made 230.46 million RMB; the Daniel Lee Yan Kong directed, Jing Boran and Lu Han starred TIME RAIDERS made 100.16 million RMB in third place. Over three weeks it made 944.7 million RMB to become the second highest grossing film and the highest among Chinese films this summer. Known for his wuxia film productions, Hong Kong director Lee Yan Kong's previous film was the Jackie Chan starred DRAGON BLADE. It made 740.49 million RMB. Seemingly he has already become another director with box office draw. The Benny Chan Muk Sing directed CALL OF HEROES made 66.98 million RMB in fourth place, over two weeks ti made 158.02 million RMB. With four big stars Louis Koo Tin Lok, Sean Lau Ching Wan, Wu Jing and Eddie Peng Yu-Yan, the performance might be somewhat disappointing. The top four were all film releases from the two previous weeks. Among the new releases, the best performer was the Mainland animated film NEW HAPPY DAD AND SON 2: THE INSTANT GENIUS. It made 53.78 million RMB in fifth place. In addition, two Russian films ON-DRAKON made 45.2 million RMB in seventh place; THE CREW made 24.14 million RMB in ninth place. Russian films have been rarely released in Hong Kong. Both of there were Russian commercial films with intention to break into the international market. In the U.S., Mainland romance opened last week. At one cinemas it made US$ 21,000, which was no match to the Mainland's 149.47 million RMB. This weeks' release, Korean film TRAIN TO BUSAN, opened in the U.S. last month and over five weeks it made US$ 1.53 million in a decent showing. - LAM KAM BO 3. TA KUNG PAO, AUGUST 25 2016, ASIAN FILMS CALL OF HEROES FAILS IN THE END Director Benny Chan Muk Sing's new film CALL OF HEROES (NGAI SING) took place in the early Republic Beiyang warlord era and spent a lot of effort into creating a military camp, only, inside the Beiyang military camp two early Qing Dynasty yellow dragon flags were hung. Immediately they told everyone that this was not a realistic film. It chose the early Republic warlord era purely because this era had the space that was most able to enter the Western film world in recent Chinese history. - HUNG KWONG CALL OF HEROES' story took place in the early Republic warring age. The northern warlord Cao Ying's military headed south. A group of elementary school students under a teacher's leadership escaped. They on the way ran into a mysterious yet strong man Ma Fung. Ma Fung, the escaping teacher and students all came to Pucheng, where due to earlier battles lost military protection. It only relied on the district defense team to maintain order. The next morning, the teacher who led the students' escape Bai Ling ran into Cao Ying's son Cao Shaolun and was fatally shot. The defense team leader Yeung Hak Lan captured Cao Shaolun and planned to execute him the next day. At this moment, the Cao camp's colonel Zhang Yi arrived in Pucheng to get his man. He happened to be Ma Fung's elder colleague. Ma Fung who has been looking from the sideline decided to lend a helping hand...... Western Elements This film first remained people of a series of Western films. Ma Fung covered his eyes and let his horse wander; a helpless small town, protectors who did not have the residents' support; even the long whip in the hand of Yeung Hak Lun would remind people of American or even Italian made Westerns. The difference was only that in this film was Jiangnan with its green hills and water, and Western gun fights also turned into hand to hand combat. Even when the story had a "modern" army in the background, it was still the same. Of course, these "Western elements" combinations leaned toward Italian's "exploitation film" direction, created a lot of melodramatic and fight ideas. Yet the leads on both sides did not have too many detailed depictions. Even though most of the time was spent on the on with the most interpersonal interaction, Yeung Hak Lun, actually the character repeated a lot of the "actor" Sean Lau Ching Wan's traditional image. The mix of THE LONE RANGER and THE DEADLY RECLAIM was not too successful here. On the other hand, the Louis Koo Tin Lok played Cao Shaolun was a rather interesting character, an absolutely evil character that was rarely seen in Chinese films. From the teacher Bai Ling we knew that Cao Shaolun was the devil who killed without reason. When he truly appeared, we realized that he indeed was. He could shoot a man, a woman and a child all the whil with a smile on his face. Then he spent of lot time, energy, life and death to play the cat and mouse game with the defense team. The other difference of Cao Shaolun from other average bad guy was, aside from killing he did not seem too interested in drinking or sex. Other than some robbery at the end, most of the time Cao Shaolun took people's lives after making them painfully suffer. He was a very pure killer. In the modern world he would be the serial killer type, only this killer had an army behind him. Childish Elimination Of Evil Facing such an absolutely evil and strong enemy, choosing between compromising and live or persisting with principles was the greatest dramatic conflict of this film. Although, viewers with some slight experience would realize that even if they compromised, most of Pucheng would not escape death. Their situation was almost like the Jews in NAZI concentration camps. Yet in the film some still said "just kneel first". The resolution that the rich man of the town thought of was to take care of the person who asked questions, defense team captain Yeung Hak Lun. Residents who were able to protect themselves could only choose to go far away. This story that did not make the audience feel comfortable condensed until the final strike that released it. Only for decades the dilemma of fists vs. guns that kung fu films had to resolve was not a problem at all here. Cao Shaolun's golden gun was obviously no match for blades and spears, the Cao camp's second in commander Zhang Yi also had a duel with his junior colleague. The era seemed to turn back from Early Republic to the Opium War. The emotions that as seriously suppressed earlier was released in such a childish way. No wonder many viewers complained. From the Early Republic to today, over 100 years, absolute evil that was similar to the story of the film was not only the imagination of the creators but real human experience that required even more actual path of release. CALL OF HEROES' director wanted to use this heavy in the beginning, light in the end, almost childish way to handle it, which truly made people feel uneasy. 4. TA KUNG PAO, AUGUST 25 2016, LIGHT SHADOW PATH "FAIR" FILM REVIEWS Film reviews can be written in many way, not just in "cheer" or "jeer". Sometimes the results can be ever changing. After reading them you still have no idea whether it is "helping with less criticism" or "cheer" on the surface but "jeer" within. Recently two film reviews wanted to say something fair about film, but after reading them you feel differently. One of them says that a recent hit crime film is actually very well made, and cultural people should not voice opposition. He says that this film's story is complete and exciting, so intriguing that it can be on the same level if not better than JASON BOURNE. Since it goes too far, conceivably that film's director would not dare to agree. As for that film's dialogue and story, the reviews in genearl have been saying that they are exaggerated and contradicting. Yet this critic says that they are "rather interesting". This actually is a taste issue, but he feels "it is just preference". There are objective standards for whether the dialogues are exaggerated and contradicting; and there are basis for taste as well. The funniest part is, this person in the review points out "perhaps (I) have never really had any taste, XX among domestic films is rather exciting and can be called one of the better films", which negates the "just preference" view in the conclusion. This film review shows that the writer likes this film, but does not have enough common sense and argument to support his own view, the result is just the opposite. The other film review "says something fair" about a period wuxia film that has not been a hit. The writer first introduces the director's past work, both good and bad. Strangely, the writer points out that the director's film this time is neither good nor bad. He truly is "fair". Then the writer begins to review this film's story and ideas, believing that if they were done 20 years before it might have become a hit. Who knows if he means to say that this film has already fallen behind the times. In further analysis, the writer says that this film is a salute to Western films and has "taken" a character from another Japanese film to add in. The writer actually is obviously saying that this film is not an original creation; then he ever further points out that this film other than its hardcore has no bright spot and is far from the market. Even "more exciting" is that the writer points out that the story is cliche, its drama procrastinates. Seemingly the film has nothing positive, the review truly cannot be "fair". Thinking that he is "saying something fair", the writer in the end only says that creatively the film's "starting point" is good, the martial art action is outstanding, but overall the film "puts people to sleep" and "has antiquated method of expression". Why would the film idea come from a Western film and add a Japanese film's character starts from somewhere good? The entire review has shown everything about the film and its flaws, not to mention criticizing it. Only in the end it says that this film is "not a rotten film". After reading this review, the impression is this film is very rotten. This writing's thinking is truly hard to understand, the result is that the subject is very attractive to eyeballs and draws readers in to keep reading. After that they would lose any interest to watch this film, which is not at all "fair" to the film and the director. - TIN LIK [ In Production Now/Soon ] Can : Sut Luen Yut Lit : Break Up Day d. Opening March 26 2016 at the Hong Kong International Film Festival Opening August 25 2016 Trailer : https://youtu.be/jl715Our5Jg [ HONG KONG INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL ] Inspired by the true story of Hong Kong’s first teenage baseball team, director Chan Chi-fat’s Weeds on Fire proves a surprisingly relevant youth sports drama. In the 1980s, two childhood friends join the Shatin Martins, a Band 3 school baseball team managed by the school principal (Liu Kai-chi). From these humble beginnings, the boys experience camaraderie, fall in love and make fateful decisions that resonate throughout their lives amid a changing Hong Kong and its sporting world. [ BROADWAY CIRCUIT ] In the year of 1984, the Sino-British Joint Declaration was signed, and the future of Hong Kong became unclear. In the stream of history, this story of a baseball team beneath the Lion Rock had gradually been forgotten. In that year, "Shatin Martins", the first Hong Kong youth baseball team, was formed. The 10 young players were living an uneasy and restless life as Hong Kong was being humiliated by one defeat after another and the fate of the “Shatin Martins” and their strong rival, the Japanese Buffaloes, hanged in the balance. However, the hardship only brought out their bravery to surmount themselves and overcome the struggles. Living in the golden age, these players ignited their glory with every game as they grew together with their city. Eventually, it all comes down to the final game facing their greatest rival yet... Meanwhile, Inspector Q narrows down Blackjack’s whereabouts when he learns of a finance group’s involvement in a drug deal in Brazil. The deal involves company chairman Kwok Ming, his advisor Lam, Lam’s right-hand man Shiu and Foon-hei, who is plotting a comeback to the crime world. When the players learn of an undercover agent in their midst, paranoia and distrust begin to cloud over the deal... [ THE FILM CATALOGUE ] After a handler of undercover agents died and his classified files erased, some of the identities of those agents become lost. When someone codenamed Blackjack contacts the police, asserting that he is a lost agent , Inspector Q sends Agent Ting to contact him. Ting soon finds herself manipulated by Blackjack, while Inspector Q encounters a series of peculiar events resulting in the death of the chairman of a finance group. Finally, Inspector Q manages to pin down the whereabouts of Blackjack and uncovers the surreptitious involvement of a business company in a huge drug deal in Brazil. However, the drug dealers have found out that there is an undercover agent among them, and things get trickier as fear and mistrust gain the upper hand....
