She admitted that she thought about personally confronting him at his film MERMAID (MEI YUN YU)'s Beijing press conference. Although she did not appear in the end, she still insisted on Chow Sing Chi to personally answer for rumors and accusations. Otherwise she would confront him at his next film release. * (2016/08/10) The film MISS SUNSHINE (SING NUI KEI YUEN) held a press conference in Penang, Malaysia. Director Clifton Ko Chi Sum and the leads Maggie Cheung Ho Yi, Annie Liu (Lau Sum Yau), Alex Fong Lik Sun, Michelle Wai Si Nga, Vincent Kok Tak Siu, Louis Cheung Kai Chung and Singapore television Best Actor Christopher Lee attended. Director Ko Chi Sum said that for the wedding scene with Wai Si Nga and Cheung Kai Chung, he spent several days and used almost 100 people on the shoot. Si Nga said that for the past few months she kept going to Penang, last month she worked with Anthony Wong Chau Sun and this time she was paired with Cheung Kai Chung. She said, "The movie last time had a more solemn subject so I had to remain dark. This time is a comedy and I am very excited everyday. I even become friends with Sister Ho Yi and Sum Yau." Si Nga said that this time all the actors worked together for the first time and came from different backgrounds. She learned a lot and their common topic was "durian". They even went to the "durian hill" on their break for freshly fallen durians. Cheung Kai Chung said that he was the happiest about the hotel's 24 hour gym. He said that when he had extra energy he would go for release, when his wife saw him at the gym even at night she could relax. Cheung Ho Yi has not made a film in a very long time. This time she took the role mainly because the film would be a comedy. She has always wanted to make a comedy, in addition it was a first collaboration with all the actors so it would be very challenging. Lau Sum Yau said that she has always admired Maggie. Before working together she has seen a lot of Maggie's acting. Now she can learn from the sideline. In the film the three girls have to play a prank on the Christopher Lee played d-bag of the century Gary and would use all the ways that they thought would be smart but actually comedic in the film. * (2016/08/10) The film LINE WALKER (SI TOH HUNG JEH) two nights ago held its premiere, the three lead actors Nick Cheung Ka Fai, Louis Koo Tin Lok, Francis Ng Chun Yu arrived in style. Lead actress Charmaine Sheh Si Man was no match for Korean star Clara Lee. When Clara Lee heard the praises for how well dressed sh was, she said thank you. However, she was just coordinating with her sexy character in the film. Reporters said that her low cut dressed knocked out lead actress Sheh Si Man. Clara said, "That's not it, don't say that!" Koo Tin Lok and Cheung Ka Fai in the film had a chase scene. Goo Jai revealed that the film was shot over several days so it was not too tough. Ka Fai said that Director Chin Kar Lok normally loved to mess around, but during the shoot he very seriously made great arrangements. In another car crash scene a lot of technology was use in conjunction, the shoot would only take place under safe conditions. This time in the film Ng Chun Yu had to perform monodrama. He joked, "Nothing I can do. I have no friend and no co-star, I have to play the single home village. I only look at equipment and analyze." However in the film he and Sheh Si Man had a relationship. Chun Yu said, "Ah Sheh is incredibly beautiful! In incredibly shape!" Ka Fai joked, "We are not afraid of the Korean front invasion, we support the domestic ones!" * (2016/08/10) This year would have been the late superstar Leslie Cheung Kwok Wing's 60th birthday. Radio Hong Kong added descriptive video service to four of his classic films A BETTER TOMORROW (YING HUNG BOON SIK), A CHINESE GHOST STORY (SIN NUI YAU WON), ROUGE (YIN JI KAU) and ONCE A THIEF (JUNG WAN SEI HOI). Yesterday at the press conference, Chan Suk Fun, Michael Lai Siu Tin, Leila Tong Ning and C AllStars were among the guests who where invited to salute Gor Gor. Thus she too hoped to be able to share a little more about her life with Gor Gor with everyone in the future, from which they could understand how Gor Gor treated people and matter. Mrs. Chan said that she was planning on September 12th, Gor Gor's 60th birthday, to release an online publication. Thus she called Gor Gor's friends, fans and co-workers to send to the LesFanmily email address photos with Gor Gor and brief stories about Gor Gor. 60 stories would be selected for the online publication to share with Gor fans Gor Gor's life as a birthday gift to Gor Gor. Mrs. Chan said that she was looking for some photos with Gor Gor herself. As for Gor Gor's love Daffy Tong Hok Tak also agreed to look for photos with Gor Gor. Mrs. Chan said that in the future she would also turned the online publication into print. She said, "The cost won't matter, this is a birthday gift. I hope to the product will be a little prettier and a little more touching!" Speaking of Tong Tong, Mrs. Chan pointd out that he was at family wedding overseas. Was his life very dull now? Mrs. Chan said that Tong Tong often went to play ball and a lot of sports. Now he was just like an athlete. Tong Ning in her child star days played the childhood Gor Gor in BRIDE WITH WHITE HAIR (BAK FAT MOR NUI JUEN) and in ONCE A THIEF she played the childhood Cherie Chung Chor Hung. Unfortunately she had no chance to work with Gor Gor both times. Instead she ran into Gor Gor in the voice work studio and even took a photo with him. She still remembered Gor Gor said to her at the time, "You are the one who plays the childhood me!" Tong Ning also learned about Chan Suk Fun's call for photos and stories. She said that she could share this photo with everyone. * (2016/08/10) Stephy Tang Lai Yun, Chrissie Chau Sau Na, Gaile Lok, Paulyn Sun Kai Kwan, Fire Lee (For For), Lily Ho Ngo Yi and Lam Kin Ming two nights ago attended the HUSBAND KILLERS (NUI SI FOOK SAU) production wrap banquet. Recently Stephy was rumored to have hinted that she might get back together with her former boyfriend Alex Fong Lik Sun, but Stephy said that her situation with Siu Fong remained the same. After the break up they have not had any contact or see each other. Would Stephy invite Siu Fong to the premiere? She admitted that she did not want to be at the same event as Siu Fong. "I don't know when the film premiere will be, I won't deliberately invite him. For now I don't want to be at the same event as Siu Fong, but I am following him on social media and know that he is working on a movie overseas." Would they consider attending an event together if someone made a huge offer? Stephy said, "Earlier someone asked me would I make another movie with Siu Fong again. At the time I said I wouldn't mind, but actually I am not willing. In the short run I don't want to, I don't want people to use us to promote." Single again for a long time, Stephy complained that she had no suitor. However for now she did not want to date. She enjoyed the single life as she was able to focus on work. Sister Na two nights ago arrived in a fall and winter coat. She joked that she was the female T.O.P. (BIGBANG member). She pointed out that in the film the director arranged for her character to be glamorous, in full make up, different nail polish colors on her nails, nothing was left to chance. Did she mean nothing was left to chance or nothing was left on? She said, "At home I can be very sexy, with boyfriend and the closest person I can have nothing left on, but now I don't have a boyfriend, I don't have a chance to have nothing left on yet." Gaile Lok returned to film after years away. In the film she even had highly difficult and dangerous stunts. She said about her first action film and first time with a gun. "I was very nervous the first time I held the gun, I didn't look convincing at all. The director told me to relax." She also said that her co-stars Stephy and Chrissie taught her a lot. It was a great experience and the collaboration was very pleasant. She felt that making a movie was very different from her modeling job. After finishing the film her return to modeling felt very different. In addition, Gaile said that earlier she went to Bali for a yoga instructor training and was already certified as a instructor. However she had no intention to teach yet as she felt she was not qualified to teach yet. * (2016/08/09) Taiwan hunk Eddie Peng Yu-Yan and director Benny Chan Muk Sing two days ago appeared in the Mainland to promote their new film CALL OF HEROS (NGAI SING). He pointed out that action director Sammo Hung Kam Bo was known for being highly demanding, revealed that he had 53 bad takes and broke his own record. As for how he stayed in shape, Eddie joked, "During the shoot I didn't have any energy to work out, everyday I went to sleep as soon as I got back. If anyone want to slim down, they can work on Chan Muk Sing's movies! (What character would you like to play?) If I have the chance I want to play a rapist!" Yesterday Eddie, Sean Lau Ching Wan, Yolanda Yuan Quan, Jiang Shuying and others attended the Beijing premiere press conference. Jiang Shuying revealed that she and Eddie had an intimate scene, which the shoot of which Ching Wan and Louis Koo Tin Lok came to visit. They even performed a fiery "Eskimo kiss" on the spot. * (2016/08/09) Yesterday Best Actress Kara Wai Ying Hung, Carlos Chan Ka Lok and director Law Yiu Fai promoted their film HAPPINESS (HUNG WON SI NGOR) on the radio. Playing a mild Alzheimer's disease patient, Siu Hung was very concerned about the illness because her mother had it for years. Was she worried that it would be hereditary? Siu Hung said, "It's possible. I haven't been scared because I had brain MRI to check my brain health and train my brain with exercises, like studying English, Erhu to stimulate the inactive brain cells." * (2016/08/09) Adapted from famous Taiwan writer Giddens Ko's novel, THE TENNANT DOWNSTAIRS is a dark comedy and a mystery feature film. In the story a vagrant who inherits a rental apartment posts rental advertisements near the university in hopes of recruiting some renters with dark side to satisfy his own voyeur desires and reveals a secret that not everyone knows. Playing the landlord who lost his mind over his daughter's death at the hands of a rapist, Simon Yam Tat Wa recalled his preparation before hand and admitted that he has visited many consultants. "I went to dentists and OB/GYN doctors and asked them 'what are patients the most afraid of and what hurts them the most?' Later I also visited a psychiatrist and asked the same question. The psychiatrist gave me the best answer, which was losing the closest relative. I used his explanation to interpret my character." Brother Wa said that he was mad for two months, after which he still wanted more. "Voyeurism is not permitted in the real world, but through this gray area of film production I can try to peep." He also said, "My character in the film would split into eight characters, I would keep thinking about how to control other people's desire everyday, keep imagining that I am different tennants and putting myself in their shoes. The method is not the same as my previous roles. My brain never stopped, which was very exhausting and very painful. For two months I thought I was making a movie, but actually I made eight movies." Brother Wa admitted that this was the best script that he has seen in five years and even said that after making the film he was deep in thought, thought of the Hong Kong situation and the chance of making the sequel himself. "The next time I want to try a horror film with a split personality character. I have already found the location and I hope to be able to direct myself. It will be a horror love story, the next one will be either THE TENNANT UPSTAIRS or THE TENNANT ACROSS THE HALL. Hong Kong is a melting pot for different races from around the world, I want to write a script that takes place in Hong Kong." In the story the mysterious writer Cheung Wing Yu would put on a "foggy raincoat" ceremonially every time he kills. Shao Yu-Wei daringly performs this character in the buff. Through the raincoat the curves of her body can be seen, so she deliberately worked out a lot. She did so not only to sculpt her figure but also to build herself up psychological, which was even more important. "I had to really get into this character to dare to take off my clothes for the camera to shoot, because at that moment I was Wing Yu and not Yu-Wei." Having always played sweet characters from the beginning, Yu-Wei tried to play a cold blooded killer for the first time and felt very excited. "My killer is different from other characters. My motive for killing is very simple, the killing process to me is like other people cutting up vegetable in the kitchen. I define Wing Yu as a cat, a cat would play with a cockroach to death, then present it to its owner. Killing to Wing Yu is a very pleasurable thing. The most terrifying is not people who feel guilty after killing, but someone who feels no guilt at all after killing. Wing Yu is such a girl who makes people shiver." They also have many scenes together. Yu-Wei said that Brother Wa was like a child. He was great spiritually and physically and brought joy to everyone. Was she nervous about working with Brother Wa? Yu-Wei admitted, "Whether in age or experience I had much less than Brother Wa, at the beginning I indeed was rather nervous, but because Brother Wa was very interesting, I was able to relax with my acting." * (2016/08/09) Twins yesterday attended a Saint Seiya 30th anniversary exhibit opening ceremony at Times Square. Ah Sa explained that because the script was good she recommended it her boss Mr. Yeung, who gave it the green light to production. She invited Ah Gil, Yumiko Cheng Hei Yi and Candy Lo Hau Yam to perform. Did Ah Gil give her a friendly discount? She said, "I didn't ask about money. (So dumb?) That's not dumb, that 's friendship. When Ah Sa asks I would even work for free." Ah Sa clarified, "I am not an investor, the rate is normal. (Do you not ask about the rate now?) The company handles that, even I have to pay the company commission. It's not like I pocket everything, not to mention that no one would charge the full rate for a Hong Kong film." Actually Ah Sa once thought about Joey Yung Cho Yi, but because Joey was too busy she had no way to perform. Would Ah Sa ask her old flame William Chan Wai Ting? She said, "No, I already asked Pakho Chau. (Are you afraid that it would be awkward?) I won't answer hypothetical questions that hasn't happened." Ah Gil added, "It won't happen." * (2016/08/08) The film LINE WALKER (SI TOH HUNG JEH)'s actors kept promoting the film nonstop. The only lead actress Charmaine Sheh Si Man already succumbed to illness. Now whenever we see a show that is all red, we go there for audience appreciation!" Wong Chung Hiu even revealed that he went to Diamond Hill for surprise audience appreciation. "I didn't decide to go until a hour before the show ended, at the time I was swimming and missed over a dozen calls!" Ka Fai also said that he rather looked forward to the Beijing premiere when he would be able to reunite with Goo Jai. Ka Fai said, "We have a lot of experience from working together, but this time pulled our relationship even closer. We are not only colleagues but even more like family, like a wife or a brother. No matter what happens we wouldn't quit on each other." Speaking of working on the movie together in Brazil, the host said that they actually went on their "honeymoon." When Goo Jai was asked about his relationship with Ka Fai in Malaysia, he would agreed that they were like a couple. However he added, "Actually I know Ka Fai has a wife, I wouldn't break them up." Earlier the team flew to Hong Kong but kept the itinerary confidential. Yesterday when he appeared at Central and Causeway Bay, some fans still showed up but luckily did not affect the production progress. The film will shoot in the Mainland, France and Saipan. The Hong Kong location even invited Bob Lam Sing Bun's artists Sarika Choy Yuen Shan and Jonathan Wong Chi Hynn. Yesterday in the story Seungri "called everyone" together to take a group of orphans on a trip. Due to the heat the entire team was drenched. Speaking of meeting Seungri for the first time, Sarika was very excited. "He is very easy going, very nice. He really knows how to make work fun. We enjoy the shoots, but I feel bad for him. He has to walk around in long pants and a shirt. Luckily the film company provided an air conditioned vehicle for us to rest in during our breaks." * (2016/08/06) Cherry Ngan Cheuk Ling two nights ago attended her new film AT CAFE 6's promotion. In her first Taiwan film, she said that her Taiwan accent was exact. However, last year when she made the film she was still in school and had to commute. "I didn't know where my home was, when I got back to Hong Kong I just slept. I thought about putting school on hold and finishing the movie first, but I wanted to graduate." After graduation Cherry immediately took three new films and was busy recording her record. Already announced her relationship with Michael Ning (Bak Ji) she admitted that her boyfriend has heard her songs many times and still had zero review. Did he think that she did not sing well enough? Cherry said, "Silence could be an expression of enjoyment." * (2016/08/06) The Eric Tsang Chi Wai, Chin Kar Lok, Jerry Lamb Hiu Fung and Louis Yuen Siu Cheung host new game show I LOVE HONG KONG yesterday officially began its taping. "The new film with the YOUNG AND DANGEROUS team was originally scheduled to start production this month, now it has been postponed until the end of the year. Because Chin Kar Lok will be the director, he is in charge." Chi Wai said that Kar Lok was the busiest Hong Kong director in Hong Kong, so his schedule was very hard to accommodate. * (2016/08/05) Catherine Chau Ka Yi and Gregory Wong Chung Hiu yesterday gave away their newspaper from their film THE MENU (DOH FOR SUN MUN SIN) to promote. Although a storm appeared before, when they "started working" only a light drizzle came. Many asked them for photos and they did not turn anyone away. After finishing their tasks they both said they were very hot and were covered in sweat. They saw that seeing how happy everyone was they were very happy too. Chau Ka Yi felt very pleased to be able to receive a good script like THE MENU. Her fans and her parents will book shows to watch it. Speaking of working with Wong Chung Hiu, Ka Yi said that this team had to stop for a "break". "Because we have worked together for awhile, I hope to try something new. I am very happy to have worked with Wong Chung Hiu, gaining a good friend." Wong Chung Hiu said that his new film will start production THE SINKING CITY (SAI FONG GIK LOK JOK GA DIK FONG YIN) next month, but he still needed one of lead and had to start making offers to the pretty girls around him in hopes of finding the suitable choice as soon as possible. * (2016/08/05) Simon Yam Tat Wa and Shao Yu-Wei earlier appeared on the cable program Film Montage. In his new film Yam Tat Wa played a deranged landlord and joked that he satisfied his peeping tom desires. "This script is the best script that I have received in the past five years. The word voyeurism is very mesmerizing but the law doesn't permit it. Finally I can do it in a movie." Brother Wa in order to play the role well and even consulted a psychiatrist about the greatest pain in life. "The greatest pain in life actually is from losing those closest to you. You can't compensate for anything. I grasped this point in my performance and played how I transformed into a deranged and mad person. I hope everyone would think about life after watching, absorb more positive energy and free themselves from the pain." * (2016/08/05) Vic Chou Yu Man in the new film S STORM (S FUNG BO) played a killer and had a lot of action scenes. They included car chases, gun fights and fight scenes. He said that this time he had more special effect, stunts and car chase scenes, which made a very exciting challenge! Yesterday rumor surfaced that he and his wife had a baby girl. Jai Jai's manager confirmed the news but did not reveal any other information. * (2016/08/05) Carlos Chan Ka Lok in the new film HAPPINESS (HUNG WON SI NGOR) had many scenes with Best Actress Kara Wai Ying Hung and even took his greatest challenge in his film career so far. He not only took a angry slap from Chin Siu Ho but also had to cry for six hours straight. Even the highly demanding Wai Ying Hung recognized the result and praised Ka Lok for "getting it". After working together many times, Wai Ying Hung complimented Ka Lok on his enormous improvement. "He now knows how to grasp the character's internal changes, sometimes when the lines were changed or improvised he would know how to react immediately; before he would just be stunned and not know how to respond at all!" * (2016/08/05) Directors Benny Chan Muk Sing and Sammo Hung Kam Bo teamed up for the new film CALL OF HEROES (NGAI SING), in which Sean Lau Ching Wan as a small figure defended against the authority Louis Koo Tin Lok, while Wu Jing and Eddie Peng Yu-Yan fought to the havens with real kung fu. Speaking of Lau Ching Wan's long whip, a rarely sen weapon in wu xia films, action director Hung Kam Bo said that it was chosen purely due to his personal preference. "Although it has been used before, our whip is prettier!" He said that Lau Ching Wan spent over a month on training and was able to crack the whip. "Peng Yu-Yan also spent some time on the double blade, the only one who didn't have to train was Wu Jing." Chan Muk Sing said that Koo Tin Lok was willing to give up his leading man image to play a villain, which was truly rare. Hung Kam Bo said that the biggest difficulty to overcome in the shoot was the rain for 2/3 of it. Chan Muk Sing revealed that the team made a giant tent for the shoot. "We used six cranes to prop up the tarp for the shoot!" * (2016/08/05) Best Actor Sean Lau Ching Wan in his new film HEARTFALL ARISES (GAING SUM POR) played a criminal psychology professor and had many scenes with Nicholas Tse Ting Fung's detective character. To bring to life the professor's educational image, Ching wan spent a lot of time on studying the tone of the lecture and the presence of intellectuals. He even studied how they walked. He said, "Most professors spoke more seriously and clearly, few would be smiling and fooling. So I put a lot of effort into the tone of speech, the even pace of which had to be grasped very precisely." * (2016/08/05) The film GIRL OF THE BIG HOUSE (BO BUI DONG GA) two nights ago held a charity premiere. Leads Francis Ng Chun Yu and Miriam Yeung Chin Wa, Jim Tsim Shui Man and Edmond So Chi Wai attended. Chun Yu appeared as his classic character Ugly Kwun. He said that he came right from a movie shoot. After the premiere he would have to return to the set. However he revealed that he was not playing Ugly Kwun again, only a similar character. He would have many fight scenes and break soft drink bottles left and right. He would even hav a scene in which several hundred people would gather in Causeway Bay. Speaking of his son Feynman, Chun Yu said that he would have to wait until his son finish reading the script before deciding. He could not force him and the team might not want him either. Chin Yu was surprised and in disbelief that Chun Yu's son would perform in a movie with "Ugly Kwun". Speaking of the fake news of Kitty Yuen (Siu Yi) falling for Shawn Yue Man Lok, Chin Wa joked, "I got the gift already, it's time for him to hav a wife. Siu Yi is a great cook!" Chun Yu jokingly fought over her. "Come on Yue Man Lok, I have dibs on Siu Yi. When I take her out I would definitely cover up. Reporters definitely wouldn't catch us, we won't have any rumor!" As for Cheung Tat Ming's separation announcement, Chun Yu felt that this was a personal decision that often occurred in show business. However both Tat Ming and his wife were very friendly and kind, some things would always be unexpected. Now "cooling down" was in fashion anyway. * (2016/08/04) Charlene Choi Cheuk Yin last year with SARA (CHOR GEI) was nominated for the Hong Kong Film Award Best Actress, she lost but Ah Sa's acting was recognized. This year for her 15th anniversary in the business, Ah Sa decided to challenge herself again with the romantic film YUEN LEUNG TA 77 JI (FORGIVE HIM 77 TIMES). This time she was not only an actress but also participated in screen writing, casting and production budget. The film was based on Erica Lee Man's novel of the same name. Ah Sa actively gave opinions to the novel and film script and even shared all of her past dating history so screen writer Lee Man would be able to tailor the love story to her. Ah Sa said, "In the past I was more passive in the film, I kept waiting for good scripts. Since working with Lee Man and director (Herman) Yau Lai To on SARA, I started to think 'instead of being passive and wait for a good script, not only create one myself'. Thus this time I worked hard on participating in the scrip and hope to create a love story that belongs to me." Ah Sa even participated in the production budget for the first time and asked investor Emperor Motion Pictures for help. Ah Sa during the negotiation saw the amount and sometimes could not help but go "wow". She often said that she "got it". Emperor boss Albert Yeung Sau Sing felt that Ah Sa this time broke out of her frame and was brave to accept the challenge. She was worth supporting and thus the film was finally greenlit. With script and financing, of course casting began and Ah Sa took part as well. She called in favors and asked her friends like Gillian Chung Yun Tung, Yumiko Cheng Hei Yi, Candy Lo Hau Yam and Michelle Wai Si Nga while the lead actor will be Pakho Chau. Everyone agreed as soon as Ah Sa asked. * (2016/08/04) Nick Cheung Ka Fai and Louis Koo Tin Lok visited Brazil for the first time for their film LINE WALKER (SI TOH HUNG JEH) and welcomed many major scenes like an adventure. They never expected to hear gun shots from afar! However, they trusted the team's arrangements. Ka Fai said, "What is there to be afraid of?" Goo Jai asked the crew curiously, "Hey? Wasn't that a real gun shot?" The director said, "No, it's just firecrackers next door!" Goo Jai asked, "What? How can Brazil have firecrackers? Are you messing with me?" Ka Fai and Goo Jai showed their brotherly love in the film. They worked together all the time over there and cultivated their relationship. Ka Fai half scolded Goo Jai when he said, "You are always setting me up, constantly improvising out of the blue and I have to follow." Goo Jai said, "He improvises too! We just see who follows better!" * (2016/08/04) Sean Lau Ching Wan who rarely made an action film personally performed his stunts in his new film CALL OF HEROES (NGAI SING). His hands and feet were bound as he was dunked into a water tank. He was in the water from his head to his chest for a dozen seconds or so. Ching Wan's face was all red from being hung several times and even choked on water. Ching Wan still had no complaint. Speaking of this scene, Ching Wan said, "I was the most afraid of the water going into my nose. I had cotton balls but I couldn't breathe. In addition being upside down I had no sense of direction at all. With Big Brother (Sammo Hung Kam Bo) keeping a close eye, actually it was very safe. It was a pretty unique experience." * (2016/08/04) The film THE MENU (DOH FOR SUN MUN SIN) two nights ago held a premiere. Actors Jeana Ho Pui Yu, Gregory Wong Chung Hiu, Justin Cheung Kin Sing, Catherine Chau Ka Yi, Kate Yeung Kei and Ng Man Tat attended. Ho Pui Yu's romance with director Philip Yung Chi Kwong has been exposed. She gladly accepted everyone's congratulation but he rushed into the cinema. He was unwilling to stop for photos with his girlfriend. Jeana was caught on a date with director Yung Chi Kwong, then posted their photo together on her personal blog and even called him "Little Baby". When reporters congratulated her, Jeana said, "Thank you, I have been dry for several years already. Now I am very fulfilled!" Does she normally call Yung Chi Kwong "Little Baby"? She said that normally she would call him "Ah Yung" or "Chi Kwong", but that day she just felt like calling him that. She admitted that they have met the parents. Jeana said that she appreciated how serious he was about work, he was like a security island. Speaking of her toning down her sexiness. She admitted that her boyfriend did not want her to work on kiss scenes. Even if she did he would like it to be just a peck. Would she want to be the lead actress in her boyfriend's film? She said, "Of course!" Did she want him to make her Best Actress? She said, "I don't dare to think about that, it doesn't matter whether I am or not." Yung Chi Kwong did not appear until right before the start of the show, but he rushed in and declined to stop for a photo with his girlfriend. Jeana was left looking helpless. He had to be invited again to return for photos but still did not pose with her. [ BLAH OF THE WEEK ] Columns, Reviews, Interviews 1. TA KUNG PAO, AUGUST 4 2016, ASIAN FILMS DOUBLE SUICIDE: PERIOD COSTUME LOVE SUICIDES AHEAD OF ITS TIME Asian films have an interesting tradition of costume period films often using its own unique language and performance method to display a fantasy ancient world. Such language and performance methods came from the local traditional opera. Whether in China or Japan, the stage tradition that differed from the Western naturalist. With Chinese Opera, Japanese Kabuki and other traditional performances, after a large quantity of silver screens adaptations from their scripts to performance methods, created the over 100 year old costume period film tradition. - HUNG KWONG In comparison, Japanese films might have been under even more tradition performing art influence. The traditional Kabuki subjects like CHUSHINGURA and YOTSUYA KAIDAN were very popular and have been repeatedly adapted for the silver screen. Even more interestingly, even puppet play, a genre without any live person performance, would still have their scripts adapted for Japanese films. The credit of such a position for traditional puppet play probably belonged to the early Edo era playwright Chikamatsu Monzaemon. Adapting Puppet Play Scripts Chikamatsu Monzaemon's life and creative era was between the 17th and 18th century. His real name was Sugimori Nobumori and he came from a samurai family. In his youth his father gave up his official title and became a ronin. The family moved to Osaka. Losing a opportunity to rise in official ranks, Chikamatsu Monzaemon chose to enter the performing art industry. In his lifetime, he has written over 110 scripts for puppet play ningyo joruri as well as 28 kabuki scripts. His scripts' theme was the so-called "Jidaimono" that depicted historical stories of the nobles, from classic history of Japan to the less than a hundred year Zheng Chenggong story (Zheng Chenggong was of Chinese Japanese mixed heritage. Born in Nagasaki, he had a brother who remained in Japan and became an official). Yet truly creating the era and elevating joruri to an art taht touched people's hearts was his "Sewamono" work, stage adaptations of contemporary social news, various crimes that occurred in business districts like Osaka and Kyoto, adultery and love suicides were very popular and gave puppet play a complex emotional world and dramatic conflict. These "Sewamono" even went beyond time and space. This point could be seen from the 10 film adaptations of Chikamatsu Monzaemon's "Sewamono" but no film adaptation of the remaining over 80 "Jidaimono". Among the recent 20 adaptations of those 10 plays, the most frequently made into film was THE WOMAN KILLER AND THE HELL OF OIL. This story of murder for money has been adapted six times to the silver screens in the past century. Another popular subject was adultery, from Kenji Mizoguchi's THE CRUCIFIED LOVERS (1954) to Tadashi Imai's YORU NO TSUZUMI (1958) and the multiple adaptations of YARI NO GONZA they all belonged to this genre. The story format would have the male and female protagonists developing a relationship by chance, forced on the run and finally caught and executed......the Japanese feudal society of then naturally would not tolerate such individuals who violated social laws. Yet to people today, these stories became tragedy of people in pursuit of romantic freedom. Shackles Of Edo Era Among the Chikamatsu Monzaemon film adaptations, the 1969 film DOUBLE SUICIDE might be the best reviewed one. The Kinema Junpo named best film in their year's top ten list, the film was about an Osaka paper merchant who fell for a courtesan and neglected his wife at home. He promised to free the courtesan but after three years he had no way to raise the money. Instead the client that the courtesan despised got there first and bought her. His wife under the pressure from her family divorced him. The merchant was out of moves, and the courtesan without any way to further tolerated her life. They decided to run off and kill themselves......the story was based on actual events. The place where they committed suicide was called Tsunashima (net island), the "Amijima" (heaven net island) in the Japanese title referred to no escape from the net of heaven. As for the Japanese kanji "Shinju" referred to the love suicide of the protagonists. The Edo era Japan had clear cut class system. The so-called "laws of humanity" and money relationship locked everyone up tight. The so-called free love actually had to fight the entire society, jump out of the entire interpersonal network. Yet this way often meant certain death, even without being in love with a prostitute without a family was the same. In Chinese Opera stories, when the protagonist and the prostitute fell in love, they often had a happy ending. However the similar situation in Japanese opera would end "in the heart". Whether it was the Masahiro Shinoda directed DOUBLE SUICIDIE or the Yasuzo Masumura directed THE LOVE SUICIDES AT SONEZAKI (1978), they all depicted love stories between this type of small figure and a prostitute. The most attractive part of DOUBLE SUICIDE was its use of classic theater elements and at same time its handling of the omnipresent "men in black" (in Japanese theater workers who control the puppets and arrange the props) in a manner that was ahead of its time, which pulled the audience from the usual period costume film world. In addition, no "modern" explanation was added to the relationship between the male and female leads, which was closer to the classical opera world. Lead actress Shima Iwashita played two characters, the goddess and the wife, and made a big splash for this director/lead actress couple team's independent production. Writer's Note: The Leisure and Cultural Services Department organized "Critics' Choice 2016 - Six Directors in Sarch of Playwrights" selected DOUBLE SUICIDE for its August screenings, which will take place on the 14th and 20th at 2:30 PM at the Lecture Hall of the Hong Kong Museum and the Cinema of the Hong Kong Film Archive. For details please call 27342900. 3. TA KUNG PAO, AUGUST 4 2016, LIGHT SHADOW PATH JULY BOX OFFICE NEGATIVE GROWTH REFLECTIONS As for May 21st, the Mainland cumulative box office has already reached 20 billion RMB. The mark was reached 37 days earlier than last year; by June, the first half of the year's total box office was 24.7 billion -- a 21.9% rise from the same period last year. Yet the July box office was only 4.5 billion, a drop of 1 billion (18%) from last year. The situation was worrisome. The earlier optimistic prediction thought that 60 billion could be reached in 2016, which seemed very unlikely. The writer felt that it was a good phenomenon though, as industry insiders would reflect upon what problems have appeared in the industry. Last year's July line up was strong, with MONSTER HUNT (2.4 billion), JING BIAN MAN (1.16 billion), MONKEY KING: HERO IS BACK (950 million). This year in comparison had no film that made over 1 billion. The best box office performer was the Jackie Chan starred SKIPTRACE (700 million), then COLD WAR 2 (670 million). They were only simple comparisons, the biggest difference between the first half of the year this year and last year was the change of "ticket make up". "Ticket make up" is when online ticketing platforms work with film companies to sell tickets at a low price. They even set a number (tens of millions in general). To film companies, this helps with the box office growth. The ticketing platform can gain market share. Only the cinemas would complain to the high heavens. Last year's "ticket make up" reportedly was 4 to 5 billion, but a year later, the online ticketing situation drastically changed. The money has almost been burnt as the trend of transitioning into film production and distribution has started. Thus "ticket make up" has gradually declined, in particular after March. After the IP MAN 3 box office fixing, the State Administration of Film Radio and Television conducted serious investigations on severe box office fluctuation and demanded IP's distributions to provide the distribution contract. Thus box office operation has become more reserved and the market has become healthier. Yet some of last year's big hit films without the assistance of "ticket make up" would have had no way to reach those box office numbers. However "ticket make up" could not possibly continue because it did not meet with business principles. Instead in order to reach high box office, cinema operation might have room for improvement. The current cinema distribution method mostly would give different films a percentage of the film scheduling all at once, which might not necessarily be positive for admission rate. Some experienced colleagues have pointed out that more than 30% film scheduling rate was unnecessary. Because when they have too many screens, they have too many shows. That in turn created low admission rate and less than full utilization of cinema capacity. In addition, when films with high film scheduling rates could not compare to films with the second highest and other scheduling rates, no timely adjustment (of film scheduling rate) would be made. Thus making use the cinema seats was difficult. Instead new film scheduling rate tended to be high, such "preference for the new" made some strong films unable to fully demonstrate their draw. Such questions in operation are well worth examining anew. - TIN LIK [ In Production Now/Soon ] MISS SUNSHINE Can : SING NUI KEI YUEN Lit : Saint Girl Wonderful Romance d.
