The film will open in August and both were looking forward to it. Benz Hung said that later he will promote with Ah Sheh. Ah Sheh pointed out that starting in mid August she will have to promote all over China, after which she planned to rest. Earlier when she made LINE she was injured in a car chase with a motorcycle helmet on, she aggravated her old neck injury. She said, "I have been seeing a doctor about moving (the column) back into its correct place. (Did you cry from the hurt?) It wasn't that serious, but my arms would get numb. The doctor told me to rest for half a year. Whether I listen or not it would be another matter." She said that before the shoot she did not know that she would have so many stunts like car chases, fights, gun fights and explosions, because on the television series she only carried a folding chair. She joked, "The director thought too much of me." Benz Hung joked that Ah Sheh actually was able to do the stunts, only that she was all bruised. Speaking of his character Tam Foon Hei who died in the television series but was brought back to life in the film, Benz Hung said that the film would explain why he was not dead. Did he have any fight scene this time? He joked, "I did, I had to hit Ah Ting (Ah Sheh's character) to death." Ah Sheh said that in the scene Benz Hung would rather she died in his hands than someone else's. How long did Ah Sheh plan to rest? She said that for now she had the idea but sometimes some very attractive work would keep her from doing so. Benz Hung joked that her time off would only be wishful thinking. Action director Chin Ka Lok said that because Sheh Si Man was a close friend of his wife Angela Tong Ying Ying, his stunt designs for her would not be too difficult as he did not dare to abuse Ah Sheh. Speaking of shooting on location in Brazil, he revealed that before they left the epidemic erupted in Brazil and the team had second thoughts. He said, "I was afraid that after the shoot we couldn't come back to Hong Kong, because we went without any immunization and Brazil became an epidemic region. Even if we return to Hong Kong we would have to wait half a year before going somewhere else!" * (2016/07/20) Christine Ng Wing Mei yesterday invited Alan Tam Wing Lun, Jordan Chan Siu Chun, Babyjohn Choi Hong Yik and Jacky Cai Jie to her Cable program MS FIVE TASTE. Lady Ng invited the Principal to the program again mainly to coordinate with the September 1st release of their film FOOLING AROUND JIANG HU (GONG WU BEI KET), which will premiere later on the Principal's birthday. The film's original Chinese title was GONG WU HEI KET (MOB COMEDY). The Principal said that the film was a tear jerking, heart touching inspirational film, the performance method was also very complicated. Lady Ng joked that since the film was made half a year ago would he still remember the story? The Principal answered, "I can't even remember my lyrics, how can I remember that?" Lady Ng also praised the Principal's character for being able to bring the message to the audience. The emotional scenes were more than just a few drops of tears. He really could win the Hong Kong Film Award and the Golden Horse Award. The Principal humbly said, "It's a surge! I never thought about Best Actor, I have won it before! With all the praises, you have opened my eyes to another you! Haha!" Chan Siu Chun also praised the Principal for being willing to play this mob boss character and very well at that. He truly was a Best Actor. Siu Chun also said that while on the set, even when he was not in a scene the Principal would give a lot of advice. Was the Principal the real director? Siu Chun said, "I don't know, the shoot was very pleasant. Lady Ng is a funny lady, when the Principal is around we get to eat. He treats us to every meal, I would gladly work with him again!" Siu Chun and his wife Cherrie Ying Choi Yi were working on having another child. Siu Chun said that he want "double". Reporters joked that he wanted two more babies? He said, "Double could mean another son, not necessarily a daughter. If I have to raise three then it's not fun, it would be very tough!" His wife could take care of the baby. He said, "I have to show my face, with a few more I would have to be a social butterfly!" Would he learn "the bicycle kick" from the Principal? Siu Chun chuckled, "He learned it from someone else too." * (2016/07/20) Superstar of a generation Anita Mui Yim Fong's bronze statue has been erected at the Avenue of Stars for two years. Two nights ago fans brought flowers as Sister Mui's songs were played. Fans brought photos from Sister Mui's New Talent victory and champagne drinking to remember their idols. An 18 year old female fan named Land Mine from Wuhan, Hubei heard Sister Mui's songs last year. After WOMAN'S HEART and INTIMATE LOVER she liked Sister Mui very much. She often went to the karaoke box to sing Sister Mui's songs and basically already learned to sing all of Sister Mui's Cantonese songs. Her favorites were SONG OF SUNSET and THE HEART IS STILL COLD. Earlier when she did not truly pay attention to Sister Mui she has seen her films. Later when she watched them more seriously she thought ROUGE (YIN JI KAU) was great. Now she has collected some old CDs and DVDs as well as three thousand videos of Sister Mui. She revealed that her pockets were filled with Sister Mui memorabilia and newspaper clippings. She also affected her friends into liking Sister Mui. She said that she participated in fan club events in the Mainland, but the Mainland fan club has not grown strong yet. On Sister Mui's October 10th birthday, she did not know whether she would have time from the university but she would try to make time to come to Hong Kong. * (2016/07/19) Jackie Chan's new film SKIPTRACE two days ago held its Beijing global premiere. He and Fan Bingbing, Dylan Kuo, Johnny Knoxville attended. Jackie Chan led everyone in a new dance version of UNDERSTAND MY HEART. Jackie Chan then received the "most risking taking mischievous man child", while Fan Bingbing and Johnny Knoxville were called "Little Princess of Hundred Changes" and "Little Prince of Pranks". Speaking of the box office, Jackie Chan said that he has already made 56 films. Box office was not that important to him. He hoped that the entire world's audience would like the film and not just China. If a nation had 200 million at the box office then it would be very amazing. Jackie Chan talked about almost losing his life during the shoot. At the time he was in the water for a scene, he ran into a riptide and drowned. Originally his cry for help line became a real call for help. Luckily the team found out in time and saved him. * (2016/07/19) Miriam Yeung Chin Wa, Francis Ng Chun Yu, child star Angela Wang Shiling and producer Wong Jing two days ago attended their film GIRL OF THE BIG HOUSE (BO BUI DONG GA)'s premiere carnival theme press conference in Beijing. Ng Chun Yu in sunglasses and a white jacket looked much thinner; he was full of smiles and appeared in a decent mood. The spotlight was on Wang Shiling. In the film "Little Princess" Wang Shiling led the "Super Baby Alliance" in a fairy tale castle that was full of contraptions in a battle of dumb crooks. At the press conference, she received the "all purpose baby" award because of her brave performance in the film. Chun Yu and Chin Wa played a couple. They joked that because Wang Shiling was on the set, they could not be intimate. Chin Wa even praised Wang Shiling was a "natural little actor". * (2016/07/19) The Sean Lau Ching Wan, Louis Koo Tin Lok, Eddie Peng Yu-Yan starred new film CALL OF HEROES (NGAI SING) earlier released the film theme song music video STEEL HEART. Taiwan Singer Ashin wrote the lyrics, music and performed the song. Ashin's voice with the fight scenes and ink splash effects had people's blood boiling. Ching Wan, Goo Jai and Eddie posed in the music video and made them reminisce about their days in Early Republic era costumes. Eddie said, "Back then fighting in the costume was a lot of fun, in a suit moving around isn't too convenient." * (2016/07/19) The film YAU YI YUEN (YOUNG CHILD GRUDGE) yesterday held a production start ceremony. Attending actors included Wilfred Lau Ho Lung, Annie Liu (Lau Sum Yau), Anita Chui Bik Ka and Ng Wai Shan. During the photo shoot Ng Wai Shan had wardrobe malfunction several times. Once worked for TVB and HKTV, the 39 year old Ng Wai Shan after leaving television liberated herself. She said that she lost weight for the film. She was also without any underwear because earlier while shooting in Malaysia the crew provided her with a pair that slipped off from perspiration. She felt embarrassed and just took it off. She even said, "I am going all in on this wager, I showed off a little in the film but not everything. It's just conceptually daring." Since she took such a risk, was the salary very sizable? Ng Wai Shan said, "To me I am very gratified, but not enough for a down payment for a home." Another sexy star Chui Bik Ka was asked if she shared any advice with Ng Wai Shan. She said, "My performance experience is very light, the most important is to take the full safety precaution." Was she worried that her spotlight would be stolen? She said no. "I am only guest starring as a model. (Did you run into strong competition?) I don't know, I might not be able to accept anything too extreme. I haven't gone commando, it would depend on the situation. I have tried without wearing one in another film. (If you have to dress like Ng Wai Shan would you?) I would consider it, I am afraid that my figure wouldn't be able to handle it." The sexy Ng Wai Shan seduced Lau Ho Lung in the film, he said that she was possessed in the scene. She had a towel on. Ng Wai Shan said that her costumes were sexier than lingerie. He said, "Then she is too conservative. (Did you tell your girlfriend Joey Yung Cho Yi before hand?) I don't need to, I am a professional actor. (Have you seen your girlfriend in a towel?) I can't answer that." In the funeral business in the film, Lau Ho Lung after a funeral scene in Malaysia went to the bathroom and realized that he was locked in. Later the crew broke down the door. He was not frightened but his co-workers were scared stiff. He said, "They said something was in the bathroom, but I am pretty scientific. With so many people going to the bathroom, the lock got worn out." Sum Yau said that she went to Malaysia for the shoot. Although she did not run into anything supernatural, afterward she realized that the two hotels she stayed in were notorious for being haunted. In the hotel room she saw a moth that was the size of her palm, she was so terrified that she slept with the cover over her head all night. With her sexy co-stars Ng Wai Shan and Chui Bik Ka, Sum Yau joked that she did not dare to look at them either. * (2016/07/19) Margiela Kwok Sze Lam, Hidy Yu Hiu Tung and Colleen Lau (Ho Lan) yesterday attended the East Asian Thai Kickboxing championship 2016 Hong Kong team event. Coming in second on the ViuTV program G1 FIGHT CLUB, Kwok Sze Lam faced a challenge from the inexperienced Yu Hiu Tung and a series of new challengers. Yu Hiu Tung said that they were both in the film SPECIAL FEMALE FORCE (LAT GAING BA WONG FA), but Sze Lam played a cop from 20 years ago and she played a killer 20 years later. They did not have any scene together. She wanted to issue a challenge and yesterday they finally met for the first time. * (2016/07/19) The film HAPPINESS (HUNG WON SI NGOR)'s stars Kara Wai Ying Hung and Carlos Chan Ka Lok recently were invited to attend the 21st Made In Hong Kong Film Festival in Washington, DC. The event set up a salute to Wai Ying Hung segment to celebrate Sister Hung's 40th anniversary in the film industry. At the forum, some enthusiastic fans brought all of Sister Hung's film posters from their collection to show their support. Sister Hung was not only moved but also could not help but joked, "Now these posters are very valuable!" Still very impulsive after 40 years in film, she hoped to have more time to perform and showed the audience many more different styles of Wai Ying Hung! Best Actress Wai Ying Hung and Chan Ka Lok recently were invited to attend the Made in Hong Kong Film Festival in Washington DC. The 21st Made in Hong Kong Film Festival takes place form July 12 to August 31 in Washington DC. Organized by the Smithsonian Institute, the event has promoted Hong Kong film for years. This year is Sister Siu Hung's 40th anniversary in film and her new film HAPPINESS will open soon. Thus the event set up a "salute to Wai Ying Hung" segment. On the 17th it screened Wai Ying Hung's classic film MY YOUNG AUNTIE (JEUNG BUI). A Shaw Brothers film release that was released in 1981, it was a Lau Kar Leung written, directed and starred martial art comedy film. Sister Hung also with this film won the 1st Hong Kong Film Award Best Actress. The event chose this film to salute Wai Ying Hung to honor her 40 years of contribution to Hong Kong film. The event also arranged for 10 fans to meet with Sister Hung, one loyal fan even brought Sister Hung's past film posters to meet with her and recounted each and every one of Sister Hung's films. Sister Hung was deeply touched as she never imagined her work could be so far reaching. Even as far as in the U.S. she still had many passionate fans. "At first glimpse I couldn't help but went 'wow' because even I didn't have many of them. He said that these posters came from old Hong Kong and American cinemas. Now they probably would be very valuable." Sister Hung this time attended the film festival and the forum with Chan Kar Lok. The forum was sold out. Sister Hung again sensed the local fans' passion and shared her years of film experience. "I am very happy to meet with the U.S. viewers this time, it was a recognition of Hong Kong film. I have been in film for 40 years, from the early martial art films to slowly transitioning to try vne more different genres. I don't know how many 40 years life has, but I hope to have even more time to show the audience even more different style Wai Ying Hung!" The last time Wai Ying Hung went to the U.S. was already 20 years ago, so after the forum ended sh and Chan Kar Lok took the time to sightsee. They first went to the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery. Sister Hung was the most interested in Chinese ceramics. Chan Kar Lok liked the Korean artist Michael Joo's large scale modern pieces. They later visited the National Museum of Natural History, the location of the Hollywood film NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM 2. Kar Lok was excited. "The environment here is grand. All the displays are very familiar looking. I remember at the time I saw it at the movies, I would never guess that I would have the chance to personally visit." * (2016/07/18) Tony Leung Ka Fai and director Sunny Luk Kim Ching yesterday attended an audience appreciation event at the movies for COLD WAR 2 (HONG JIN II). The film after 9 days in release made over HK$ 40 million and was within reach of the first film's record. Leung Ka fai admitted that he did not expect the film to perform so well. Director Luk Kim Ching already revealed plans to make a third film and joked that they probably would not have to wait 4 years. Ka Fai said that now Fat Gor (Chow Yun Fat) has to rest for half a year. The third film would have to wait until then to start production. Because the other lead Aaron Kwok Fu Sing's concert was about to start, would the film celebration accommodate his schedule? Ka Fai suggested for the team to celebrate at the Hong Kong Coliseum. As for whether they were confident about the film's award show chances, Ka Fai said, "Let's make the third film first. This time we had a lot of support from the Greater Chinese audience. I am very excited. I hope the director will have a new film soon." Ka Fai the put his hand on the director's shoulder to apply pressure. Luk Kim Ching said, "The third film's pressure would be even greater, but only with pressure would there be motivation." Director Luk revealed that the third film's roles would split the screen time rather evenly, and new actors would join in. Ka Fai said that many Hong Kong actors still have not been used yet, but not one of the original team could be skipped. Fat Gor's line, "For the remainder of my life I would only welcome you" has become a classic line. Ka Fai joked that it was very hard to have a god class Best Actor to only welcome himself. He said, "So I have to go hiking and have Poon Choi with him." * (2016/07/18) Jeana Ho Pui Yu recently was rumored to have moved in with director Philip Yung Chi Kwong. Yesterday when she attended the film THE MENU (DOH FOR SUN MUN SIN)'s event, she denied that she was dating and said that Yung Chi Kwong was just a little more than friends friend. When reporters congratulated Jeana, she played dumb. "The film is finally released!" Was she living with Yung Chi Kwong? She said, "Back then many friends were at the place, he is a little more than friends friend, a very talented Oppa. (Would you have any chance to develop it into something more?) If nothing happens then everyone would stomp on me! (Are you afraid that it would end when it sees daylight?) I haven't thought of an answer yet, let's talk more later." Speaking of how she met Yung Chi Kwong, Jeana said that they met when they worked together and they stayed in touch. She also said that she liked mature and stable man. Did Yung meet her needs? Jeana said, "I don't know yet, probably!" Justin Cheung Kin Sing chimed in and asked if Yung Chi Kwong was someone she would marry? Jeana said, "You have to date first before getting married, now it's time to store up ammunition!" Gregory Wong Chung Hiu was revealed to be flying model planes with actress Jacky Cai Jie. he admitted that he invited her to make a movie as a director. "She didn't have room in her schedule, so we missed out. (Did something good come out of it?) There is a chance. (What is missing?) I don't know, but we talked, we liked movies, we could fly planes together, too bad the plane couldn't take off! (Were you embarrassed?) A little!" He also said that if he was dating he would publicize it. Catherine Chau Ka Yin had a injury behind her left ear. She said that when she got up she hit a bed side lamp that could not be more broken. "I needed several stitches. The doctor said that the wound was 2 cm long." * (2016/07/17) Raymond Wong Pak Ming and Fennie Yuen Kit Ying yesterday attended a store opening. Yuen Kit Ying revealed that she received a film offer for the end of the year. She was considering yet because she was afraid that she would not be used to it. She said, "Although I sleep late, I have to be alert on the set. I am afraid that I won't have enough endurance. Whether as the lead or the support I have to give my all to the performance and answer to the investor, myself and the audience." She felt that she was very fortunate, having worked with many actors like Chow Yun Fat, Leslie Cheung Kwok Wing, Sam Hui Koon Kit, Aaron Kwok Fu Sing, Jacky Cheung Hok Yau, Jet Li (Lee Nin Kit), Louis Koo Tin Lok and Francis Ng Chun Yu. Which actor would she like to work with now? She said, "Kim Soo-Hyun, I have watched MY LOVE FROM THE STARS many times. Whenever I feel bad I would watch it." Speaking of the film TEN YEARS winning the Hong Kong Film Award Best Film and leading to the Motion Picture Industry Association and Chamber of Film to suggest a standard change, film company boss and affiliated organization member Wong Pak Ming of course agreed. "Anything would need improvement, even people need change. When Best Film leads to controversy, we should meet to discuss the standard to see it is the fairest, the most just, open and transparent so no one would argue and dispute so much." Some said that because TEN YEARS had political elements, the standard change was requested. Wong Pak Ming said that he has never thought about political elements. He only wanted the standard to be clearer and more reasonable. He said, "Everything needs improvement, not staying the same just because we say so. The Hong Kong Film Award belongs to all filmmakers, not just certain people. It has to convince everyone, improvement would make the standard more complete and no longer have any controversy." * (2016/07/16) Chow Yun Fat earlier was unable to attend the film COLD WAR 2 (HONG JING 2)'s Hong Kong premiere and stated that he would go to the movies when he returned to Hong Kong. Two days ago he "got the check" as he and Fat Soh went to Diamond Hill personally and lined up for tickets to support the film! When he appeared in his trademark hiking look with Fat Soh, the people in front of him in front "sec rec" him as they could not help but yelled, "FAT GOR!" Many after learning that Chow Yun Fat was in line and offered to let him go first, but Chow Yun Fat turned them all down and remained in line. He also did not turn any selfie seeker, from age 8 to 80, away. Once Chow Yun Fat entered the cinema and waited people "surrounded" him. He took the time to please everyone's selfie request. A woman who probably saw the trailer greeted Fat Gor with his golden quote in the film. "I won't do anything for the rest of my life except taking care of you." Fat Gor joked, "Huh? Just me?" Because it was almost show time and many viewers wanted selfies. Chow Yun Fat asked everyone to watch until after the show for a group photo. Then he went in to watch the movie. After the show he improvised and held a forum on the spot. He said that two idols Aaron Kwok Fu Sing and Tony Leung Ka Fai performed very well. Many viewers in the audience screamed, "Fat Gor is very cool". He joked, "I came to see a movie! With all the stuff you said like that, I am afraid that I won't be able to sleep tonight!" COLD WAR 2 continued its momentum. As of July 14th it has made HK$ 33,218,640! * (2016/07/16) Janice Man Wing Shan worked on a skincare ad for a medical beauty product. Her film COLD WAR 2 (HONG JIN 2) performed decently at the box office. Despite just returning to Hong Kong, she already could not wait to book a show to watch this film with her family. "I still want to book a few more shows, but I have to go away for work after only two days in Hong Kong. (would you ask your boyfriend to book a show?) I would." * (2016/07/16) Jackie Chan yesterday promoted his film SKIPTRACE in Wuhan. He revealed that he almost lost his life while working in Guangxi. During the floating scene shoot he ran into a riptide, despite his years in film and countless dangerous encounters Jackie Chan thought that he really was done for. He also said that this was the first time he truly cried for help. SKIPTRACE will open on July 21 nationwide. * (2016/07/16) The crime film HEARTFALL ARISES (GAING SUM POR) will open on August 18. In a very intense kidnapping scene, Nicholas Tse Ting Fung played a cop who rescued Mavis Fan. He said that at the time he sensed that Fan Hiu Huen was truly very scared and thought that she was very in character. Fan Hiu Huen said, "Although it was tough at the time, when I saw Tse Ting Fung's professionalism and lack of regard for his own safety during the heroic rescue scene, I was able to get into the character even more and unknowingly put myself into the character's situation." * (2016/07/16) Radio and Television Shanghai chief editor, famous director Teng Junjie brought 3D Beijing Opera film FAREWELL MY CONCUBINE, and XIAO HE CHASES HAN XIN UNDER THE MOON to participate in the Chinese Opera art festival premiere. Earlier he participated in the "Promoting Cultural And Creative 'Shanghai Hong Kong Connect'" exchange event. Teng Junjie said that e hoped to merge the Chinese traditional Beijing Opera art with modern film's most advanced technology to attract young viewers to experience the charm of Beijing Opera at the movies. He felt that innovation was the certain trend of Beijing Opera's extension and continuation. In FAREWELL MY CONCUBINE for example, Teng while preserving the Beijing Opera story sped up the stage rhythm. He used 3D Surround Sound technology to strength the 3D interaction between the film and the audience. This innovative format received raves internationally. As for 3D Beijing Opera films' Hong Kong releases, Teng Junjie was very confident. He felt that Hong Kong had many cross over opera lovers and staeady Beijing Opera viewers. The 3D technology and Beijing Opera's merger would also affect young viewers. The film even used Chinese and English subtitles for the audience. * (2016/07/15) Ng Man Tat, Gregory Wong Chung Hiu, Catherine Chau Ka Yi and Kate Yeung Kei earlier promoted their film THE MENU (DOH FOR SUN MUN SIN). Ng Man Tat after working with Wong Chung Hiu praised his steady acting and even dared to accept his own sharp stare. "I have worked with (Nick) Cheung Ka Fai and (Dicky) Cheung Wai Kin, they didn't dare to accept my stare. Ka Fai told me not to stare at him and said that he couldn't take it, but Chung Hiu dared to exchange looks with me!" He also joked that they had "no respect for their elder". Perhaps because he was too into the script, although it was his first collaboration with him he forgot to be nervous and stressed! With heart failure earlier, Ng Man Tat admitted that his health condition was already 70 to 80% He would consider any job that would not be too laborious. * (2016/07/15) Andy Lau Tak Wa recently flew to Europe for his new film. The shoot will last two months. Wa Jai shared his latest status on social media and stayed in touch with his fans. After arriving there, Wa Jai immediately posted a photo of him getting into a vehicle with the subject "Work then work". "I just thought of our time difference, while you are dreaming I am still at work. Don't worry about me, and don't worry me, be careful with everything!" Later he shared photos during his break. "Anticipating, busy but comfortable." He even took a camera and took photos. "Under the heavy European romantic atmosphere, anyone can pretend to be an artist for awhile!" * (2016/07/15) Money Film Production yesterday held a film press conference and celebrated Ronan Pak (Bak Kin Yan)'s birthday. Monna presented Siu Bak with a pair of sexy swimming trunk. She praised Siu Bak's great figure and wanted to go swimming with him. Siu Bak immediately turned red and said that she would have to go out with Monna more to improve their relationship! Brother Bo Ming said that he really admired Siu Bak. He thought that Siu Bak could fight and look good, sing and dance, so he tailored a character for Siu Bak in the movie and arranged for pretty girl Monna to have a crush on Siu Bak. [ BLAH OF THE WEEK ] Columns, Reviews, Interviews 1. TA KUNG PAO, JULY 16 2016, ONE WEEK IN FILM AND TELEVISION COLD WAR 2 LANDS ON TOP AT TWO PLACES Last week COLD WAR 2 (HONG JIN II) arrived. In Hong Kong it broke the opening day record and made HK$ 5.22 million. Last week it made HK$ 21.13 million for the top spot; this film also successfully opened number one in the Mainland, seemingly with the momentum of the previous film and three Great Best Actors the film truly benefited. In the Mainland, COLD WAR 2 made 300 million RMB in first place; in second place is this year's big Mainland animation hit BIG FISH AND BEGONIA, which made 229 million RMB. Its directors Liang Xuan and Zhang Chun rose to fame when they originally created Flash animation shorts online. Thus they were determined to found the B&T company and brought BIG FISH AND BEGONIA to the big screen; in third was the Mainland youth romance SO YOUNG 2 NEVER GONE with a new director who started in advertising Zhou Tuoru and stars Kris Wu Yifan, Liu Yifei, Jin Shijia. It made 179 million RMB. TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES: OUT OF THE SHADOWS made 166 million RMB in fourth place, over two weeks it accumulated 336 million RMB; the Chinese Korean co-production BOUNTY HUNTER made 85 million RMB in fifth place, over two weeks it made 303.12 million RMB in a decent showing. With advanced screenings in the previous week and officially opening last week, the Chinese American animation co-production TIBETAN ROCK DOG made 24.8 million RMB in eighth place. With advanced screenings it made 26.2 million RMB and was left completely in BIG FISH AND BEGONIA's dust. Opening this week in Hong Kong, THREE (SAM YUN HUNG) last week in the Mainland only made 288 million RMB in fourteenth place, over three weeks it mad 100.38 million RMB. At least it broke the 100 million yuan mark. In addition, with overwhelming victories in Mainland and Hong Kong, COLD WAR 2 also opened in the U.S. last week on 22 screens and made US$ 157,000. The number could not be compared to the Mainland box office at all. - LAM KAM BO 2. TA KUNG PAO, JULY 14 2016, ASIAN FILMS COLD WAR 2 ADDS SUSPENSE TO AN UNSOLVED MYSTERY COLD WAR 2 with its predecessor's momentum of 9 Hong Kong Film Awards, strong scheduling and promotions broke the Hong Kong Chinese film opening day box office record. Only, starting with COLD WAR (HONG JIN) different opinions have formed about its multiple award "raves". Indeed, the previous film strongly left many hints but actually how many were able to withstand testing. How would COLD WAR 2 turn out? - HUNG KWONG Even if we do not ask COLD WAR to be "realistic", as a crime film its story was not able to please. It even left a lot of mysteries. Today, we know that these mysteries were used to set up the sequel. Yet does COLD WAR 2 give a "reasonable" explanation? COLD WAR 2's story tightly follows the first film. The lead of the first film Lau Kit Fai is promoted to Police Commissioner after Operation Cold War. Terrorists hold his wife hostage in exchange for the arrested Lee Ka Chun (the villain of the first film). Lau Kit Fai while taking Lee Ka Chun to the exchange loses him as his colleagues blows up a MTR station. The matter upset the public, the Legislative Council calls for a special meeting. On the other hand, on vacation before his retirement the former deputy police commissioner and Lee Ka Chun's father Lee Man Bun meets with his son and other former commissioner Choi Yuen Kei. He discovers more to the story. During the LegCo hearing, big time lawyer and Councilman Kan O Wai realizes that Lee Man Bun is suspicious and sends his student to follow him. Lau Kit Fai also secretly ask ICAC agents to investigate the matter. Thy have to find out the truth before Lau Kit Fai's officially forced resignation in two weeks...... The Story Falls Apart Under Scrutiny The new film's story attempts to resolve each mystery. Where is the missing police vehicle from the previous film? Where do the mysterious terrorists from? The writers and the directors provide a kingmaker conspiracy answer. Yet, discerning viewers may ask, what would the kingmaker(s) want to go to war over a police commissioner position? If the goal is to remove a displeasing choice, why not create a scandal? It would have been more assured/under control than creating a city war? Perhaps we should put our sights back on Lau Kit Fai and Lee Man Bun, Choi Yuen Kei's battle of wits. According to big commercial film's principles, leads have to be in fist fights. Even the American president has to go hand to hand against terrorists. What is the big deal about a Hong Kong police commissioner personally escorting a suspect and getting into gun fights? The writer instead cares about those former police personnel formed terrorists/kingmakers. They are so well planned with their normal operations and have the police in the palm of their hands. Why would they suddenly be so shortsighted, attacking an unknown tracker in the tunnel, causing a big accident and ending up in a big gun fight with Lau Kit Fai in order to get loose? With something so rough and frivolous, if small time hood like Kwai Ching Hung in TRIVISA (SHU DAI JIU FUNG) does it then it would be credible. This group of "experts" who can turn the Special Duties Unit upside down cannot handle a pistol wielding Lau Kit Fai even with automatic rifles. Actually Lau Sir is the best fighter in this film. Of course, Lau Sir's final order before being forced out, aside from giving the audience the primitive pleasure of watching traditional Hong Kong film, actually shows his devious side. Lau Kit Fai is both smart and brave, and truly deserves the position of police commissioner. Actors Do Not Have Much To Work With Honestly, COLD WAR 2's story has more than one spot that is difficult to justify. Overall it can still fool people with film technique and actor performance. Only, after two COLD WAR films, several Heavenly King superstars' serious performance of government officials still is too much for the writer. Perhaps the writer has had deep impressions of these actors on screen image over the year and cannot accept their "solemn" perform. On the other hand, perhaps the characters provide little for the actors to work with. The character of Lee Man Bun for example between the two films make a complete personality turnaround without any explanation to the audience. The film can only say "people are unpredictable". Kan O Wai and his student's relationship not only is used to set up the line in which he says he would bury Lee Man Bun is only some display of stereotype. As for other characters, they only move the story along in this film without any character details to speak of. Such as it is, COLD WAR 2 as a "mystery solving" film's story is monotonous and self contradictory. Of course, this film's contradictions may be setting up for the next one. No matter what, COLD WAR 2's box office success proves that the importance of film promotion and distribution is no less than the creative department. 3. TA KUNG PAO, JULY 14 2016, LIGHT SHADOW PATH MAINLAND FILM MARKET UNIQUE PHENOMENON In the first half of this year the total Mainland box office was 24.7 billion RMB, a growth of 21.9% from the same period last year. Although the phenomenon of box office growth falling behind cinema number growth has already appeared, the industry's forecast remained optimistic. Thus, strange phenomena continued to occur in the industry as it chased the seemingly infinite growth development forecast. Although it sounded strange, it was not without precedence or reason. First, a lot of newly formed film companies flooded into the market. Among these film companies that were less than a year old, some were purely speculative; some transitioned from other industries; of course some also joined the film industry passionately. Among these new film companies, most of the management did not know film. Is that not strange? Actually not at all. Most of the current big Mainland film companies' bosses transitioned over. Some of them came from television, advertising and real estate. Thus if they criticized new film company bosses for not knowing film, they actually have forgotten where they came from and had the selfish intent of keeping others out. The film industry has always been like this, the more companies join the more the industry thrives. Hong Kong was like this as well. In the 80s and the 90s many independent production companies were founded, now only a few film companies remain. How is the industry doing? You get the idea. Hong Kong film company bosses mostly do not start in film either. Aside from Raymond Wong Pak Ming (screen writer) and Bill Kong Chi Keung (film distribution), the rest seemed to be transitioned or part time. Due to its enormous size, the Mainland market's rise in new film companies created an increase in talent demand. Film academy graduates do not have to worry about not having a job. Certain Hong Kong universities' film production department graduates are almost 100% employed. It is a good start but also has hidden concerns. These graduates originally require proper assistance to gradually grown. Yet some new companies have no talent, these newcomers sometimes would have to play important roles and even drive film project developments. They have to withstand a lot of pressure. At the same time, the film job market turnover has rapidly increased. Even poseurs can easily get high ranking jobs. New management level additions think that they will have a chance to show off, but actually they are only "staying in the same place". The price of "education" is not low. This phenomenon makes people ask, why would film managers not join new film companies? The reason is not too complicated. Professional film management talent has a lot of market. They mostly have steady jobs or companies that they serve. If they go to a new film company, communicating with the new boss and convincing investors to support their own companies would not be easy. Thus these rare elite would mostly take the easy way out. He is just an ordinary boy growing up in a fishing village and dreaming of growing up to become an inventor. One day, an outerspace monster invades the Earth and makes mincemeat of the superhero sent to meet him. So world leaders call on all citizens to design a super robot, to defeat the outerspace monster and save the Earth. Mcdull, who is scant of resources but plenty resourceful, starts fiddling with his mom’s household appliances. From a humble rice cooker, he designs a low-tech high-power robot: Risopot, and makes it to the final of the World Robot Design Competition. The whole fishing village is jubilant. To produce Risopot, everybody chips in, including the principal of the village school. And Mrs. Mak, Mcdull’s mom and the village fishball maker, works triple hard to meet the expenses. Risopot looks dumb and his functions are a joke. But with extraordinary tenacity and lots of dumb luck, he emerges the winner. Now the responsibility of saving the Earth falls squarely on the shoulders of Mcdull and Risopot. The outerspace monster will be upon the Earth again any time soon.
