* (2016/07/14) Louis Koo Tin Lok, Nick Cheung Ka Fai, Francis Ng Chun Yu 
and Charmaine Sheh Si Man earlier attended the LINE WALKER (SI DOH HUNG 
JEH) press conference in Beijing.  They were asked if they fell into the 
water who they would save first.  Goo Jai said, "I would jump in and 
swim with them."  Chung Yu said that he knew how to swim and everyone 
could just save Ah Sheh.  Ka Fai revealed that Goo Jai was a passionate 
person, especially after drinking.
	In addition, the film was about the Brazil drug trade.  Ka Fai 
and Goo Jai even had to shoot on location.  During the shoot they heard 
real gun shots.  The film company in order to ensure the safety of the 
team hired two teams of bodyguards for the 12 day shoots for all around 
protection.  The "protection money" alone already reached seven figures.

* (2016/07/14) The film TEN YEARS (SUP NIN)'s Hong Kong Film Award Best 
Film led to endless controversy.  Someone suggested a standard change 
at the Hong Kong Film Award board of directors meeting last month and 
requested the second round voting to remove the professional jury.  
Director Yim Ho at the book fair press conference was asked about the 
matter.  "I haven't heard a lot about it, I don't know how to respond.  
How was that professional jury chosen?  Not everyone know, if cancelled 
what would replace it?"  As for voice of opposition, Yim Ho continued, 
"Film not only is harder to make than before, the jury is also very 
complicated.  A lot of political elements are involved.  I believe 
everyone is still looking into how to resolve them."
	Yim Ho's review of TEN YEARS is "Professionally speaking it is 
not too professional."  He continued to make comparison to news reports.  
He said, "News can't be called professional just because of one well 
written sentence.  If the content doesn't make sense, it can't win Best 
News."  Yim Ho if films become slogans, their quality would only get 
worse and worse.

* (2016/07/14) "God" Gregory Wong Chung Hiu and Catherine Chau Ka Yi in 
the film THE MENU (DOH FOR SUN MUN SIN) continued to play their 
television series characters.  Chau Ka Yi continued to play Fong Yi but 
has been promoted to editor.  Wong Chung Hiu remained reporter Lok Ka 
Fai (Lord Fai).  In order to play the masculine middle aged guy Wong Chung 
Hiu spent months to gain almost 20 pounds and performed with a belly.  He 
said, "Gaining weight is very pleasant, I don't have to stay in shape and 
work out.  I eat what I want.  However the worst part is having to lose 
the weight after the performance and return to my previous state."  Chau 
Ka Yi was just the opposite, losing 5 to 6 pounds for her performance.  
She said that she easily gained and lost weight.  At her heaviest she 
was 122 pounds in school, she said that she was so fat she could not even 
see her neck.  Now she is 103 pounds.
	The television series THE MENU had decent rating and word of 
mouth during its HKTV run.  Now it has been made into a film, was they 
worried about the box office?  Wong Chung Hiu stated that he was 
because now attracting an audience is very hard.  They said that the 
film's selling point was a domestic film with a lot of Hong Kong spirit, 
everyone would be able to relate to it.  They hoped that everyone would 
support domestic production.  Wong Chung Hiu said, "Before and after the 
release many attractive Chinese films will be released.  I hope to bring 
a group of viewers to go to watch Chinese films and watch our film along 
the way."
	Some said that Wong Chung Hiu during the production was quite 
troublesome with a lot of opinions.  Wong Chung Hiu admitted to being a 
troublemaker.  Chau Ka Yi instead did not feel Wong Chung Hiu was 
troublesome or hard to get along with.  She only thought that he was 
impulsive to a fault, stubborn and joked that only the dumb spoke up.  
However she praised him for being hard working, doing everything 
himself in order to do his best.  Did Wong Chung Hiu have a lot of 
enemies?  He denied that and instead that many friends supported him.  
Later he will director and many have offered to help.  Has Chau Ka Yi 
offered?  Chau Ka Yi said, "I won't participate because I know the film 
needs fresher actors, maybe next time!"
	THE MENU theme song WE'RE NOT AFRAID is Eva Chan Sze Wai's work.  
When she first wrote the song she wanted to sing it herself.  She never 
thought that it would become THE MENU's theme song.  She revealed that 
the song was written in February.  At the time she saw a lot of social 
injustice, Hong Kong people were unhappy and had many different voices.  
She said, "Looking back, everyone was in harmony, very happy, the 
society was great.  How did it come to this!  So through the song I told 
my feeling and hoped that the society would be harmonious, accepting of 
different voices.  The boss heard it, felt it was very suitable for THE 
MENU and used it for the theme song."
	Chan Sze Wai is a creative singer.  In the past 11 years she has 
written almost 200 commercial love songs.  In the future she will stay 
close to the society and create with social subjects.  She will also 
jump out of the music world and act for the first time in August in YOU 
FROM THE SPACE POD.

* (2016/07/14) The Johnnie To Kei Fung directed film THREE (SAM YUN 
HUNG) opens today.  Earlier Wong Yuen Chi worked on the music video for 
the film song, the Lo Ta-Yu classic ZHI HU ZHE YE.  The choreographer 
was on hand to direct her dance in front of the projector with the music, 
as film scenes were projected on her long dress.  Ivana performed the 
elder's work this time with very alternative music and lyrics styles.  
It was not about love but about human nature.  She said, "At first I 
thought it would be as light and relaxed as Mr. Lo Ta-Yu's original song.  
I even thought about posing first!  After Chan Fai Yeung's arrangement, 
the entire feeling changed.  Then I savored the lyrics and imagined what 
To Sir told me before, I realized that this song had even more wisdom and 
poetry than I have imagined.  During the recording I imagined every 
participant's energy.  The emotions were very different from when I sang 
my own work normally.  I had more respect.  I told myself I would have to 
properly do my best for this special shoot, seriously imagine To Sir's 
words, sing every details, but it also had to be very pure!" 

* (2016/07/14) Fiona Sit Hoi Kei earlier flew to Vietnam for the Barbara 
Wong Chun Chun directed GIRLS 2.  This time aside from Fiona and Ivy Chen 
Yi-Han, Janine Chang Chun-Ning also joined the cast.
	From the first film GIRLS, Fiona and Chen Yi-Han already had 
chemistry.  They also knew Chang Chun-Ning long ago.  The three female 
leads on the first day of work were already on the same wavelength.  
Earlier the director led the actor in a production start ceremony.  The 
three girls even wore traditional Vietnamese costumes.
	Sit Hoi Kei revealed that she really like her Vietnamese girl 
look and took a lot of photos with her co-stars.  "Work has already begun 
for a week, almost everyday we had to shoot until sunset the next day.  
Although I am exhausted, I have known Yi-Han and Chun-Ning long ago so at 
work we would often chat, take photos, play games.  We are like a group 
of little gossips.  Everyday at work has been very pleasant.  I was even 
home sick less."
	Because the GIRLS 2 team was almost the original team, they had 
certain chemistry already.  Fiona was already in shape at the first day 
of work.  "In the first film, the story revolved around the girls' 
sisterly love.  In the new film, Yi-Han will soon wed.  We flew to
Vietnam for her bachelorette trip.  Because we got into big trouble along 
the way, a lot of comedy ensued.  We girls would have a lot of action 
scenes and even wire work."

* (2016/07/13) The topical film TEN YEARS due to its sensitive content 
was banned in the Mainland.  In April at the Hong Kong Film Award TEN 
YEARS won Best Film and led to controversy.  Representing film bosses, 
the Hong Kong Chamber of Films and the Hong Kong Motion Picture Industry 
Association questioned TEN YEARS' Best Film award.  Media Asia boss Peter 
Lam Kin Ngok expressed disappointment in the result and demanded an 
examination of the voting standards.  Reportedly the MPIA chief Hung Cho 
Sing has officially suggested standard change to the Hong Kong Film award 
board of directors and cancel the second round Hong Kong Film Award 
professional voting.
	Hung Cho Sing said that everyone have noticed the problem with 
the old standard long ago, but some people did not like change; the Hong 
Kong Film Award meeting will take place last week and everyone would 
discuss and study to find a good method.  Hung Cho Ming said that the 
Hong Kong Film Award second round voting standard had problems.  The 55
person professional jury represented 55%, and the 1000 person of 13 
affiliated organizations would only occupied 45%.  The result was 
completely controlled, which was unfair.  He suggested to cancel the 
professional voting, for the 1000 people of the 13 affiliated 
organizations to vote with one vote per person.  He said, "It's 
impossible for 55 people to dominate the situation.  The Chamber of Film 
and the MPIA occupied 95% of the film releases, there is no reason for 
those 55 people to choose Best Film.  This standard has problems."  Hung 
Cho Sing said that he might not be able to attend the meeting next week.  
Leung Lee Siu Ha will represent the MPIA.  Hung Cho Sing said that 
without any change to the current standard, Hong Kong Film Award would be 
in jeopardy.

* (2016/07/13) Eliza Sam Lai Heung has had a smooth career in 
television, but her first film SPECIAL FEMALE FORCE (LAT GAING BA WONG 
FA) was less than so.  Originally it was scheduled for release September 
last year, even the poster was already shot. Yet due to a torture and 
murder scene of Shirley Yeung Szeki and Jessica C., the film was unable 
to receive Mainland approval!  Luckily after several edits, the film 
finally passed inspection and will see "daylight" in September this year!
	Heung Heung after waiting for a year of course was happy about 
her first film release.  "The cast had a great relationship, I really 
want the movie to be released sooner so earlier I just kept asking!  
(Because of the violent scene it was not approved?)  Everyone put a lot 
of effort into making this film.  Many fight scenes were amazing.  So I 
wouldn't feel surprised.  Now it can be released I am really very happy!"
	Szeki regretted that her scene was cut because during the shoot 
she gave her all.  "Many scenes required wires.  In one scene I fell from 
the third story, I hope it wasn't cut because I really used all my 
strength to perform it!"  In the film, she and Jessica C were tortured and 
murdered by the pool.  Both appeared in bikini tops.  Szeki thanked 
producer Wong Wing Fung for giving her the chance.  As for Heung Heung, 
Szeki had nothing but praise for.  She called her a very lovable and 
sweet sister, unfortunately this time they did not have any scene 
together.
	Producer Wong Wing Fung also praised Szeki for her effort in her 
performance and revealed that the film's Mainland release will have 
changes.  However the Hong Kong version will remain "authentic".  Thus 
Szeki's hard work absolutely would not be wasted! 

* (2016/07/13) Checkley Sin Kwok Lam's new comer Lemon Yip Chi Yu 
immediately received full support after joining National Arts as she 
landed the lead in the film OUR DAYS (NGOR MOON DIK 6E BAN).  Rachel Chau 
Ka Lei also starred.  Earlier they worked on a student gang fight scene in 
Tuen Mun.  Chau Ka Lei stepped on Chi Yu with her heels.  In the chaos 
Chi Yu even sprained her ankle and cut her foot.  To avoid hindering the 
production, she toughed out the shoot.  After the cameras stopped 
rolling, Chau Ka Lei immediately went to disinfect and treat her 
junior colleague's foot and kissed up to Chi Yu in apology.
	Chi Yu was asked later if she was worried that she would have any 
dispute rumors with colleague Rose Chan Ka Wun, Chau Ka Lei after landing 
her first lead as soon as she joined the management company.  Chi Yu said 
that she was not worried, "No, after joining the company everyone has 
treated me very well, they are spoiling me.  Like when I got hurt, Ka Lei 
immediately sent me for treatment.  When facing the media, the elders 
would drag me along and teach me how to handle them."
	Chau Ka Lei said that she would not be jealous.  "Anyone suitable 
would land the lead, you don't get to be jealous.  Since Chi Yu has her 
abilities, Mr. Sin gives her the opportunity.  Fresh flowers still need 
green leaves for support.  If a supporting role can be very outstandingly 
played, I wouldn't mind!  I will work hard." 

* (2016/07/13) James Ng Yip Kwan after six short years in the business 
already has a chance to step foot on the Hong Kong Coliseum stage and 
perform his first concert on August 10th.  Yesterday at the press 
conference Mama Ng showed her support, so did TVB executive Elaine Lok Yi 
Ling, THE VOICE 2 judge Eliza Chan Kit Ling, Chan Suk Fun and various 
record executives.  The official open ticket sale has already sold 98% 
as of yesterday.
	Meanwhile, Kwan Gor in the film HAPPINESS (HUNG WON SI NGOR) had 
to "make a sacrifice".  In the film he played a rough garage kid with a 
bad temper, the complete opposite of his always mild mannered guy next 
door image.  In order to be more like a garage guy, Kwan Gor combed his 
bangs back and put on a headband, traded in his trademark black frame 
glasses for plastic frame.  With a wrench in one hand and a bottle of 
beer in the other, he suddenly was filled a manly flavor! 

* (2016/07/13) The film LINE WALKER (SI TOH HUNG JEH) yesterday held a 
Beijing press conference.  Director Man Wai Hung, producer Wong Jing, 
leads Nick Cheung Ka Fai, Louis Koo Tin Lok, Francis Ng Chun Yu and 
Charmaine Sheh Si Man attended the film's Beijing "brotherly love" theme 
press conference and played "Truth or Dare" on the spot.  Cheung Ka Fai, 
Koo Tin Lok, Ng Chun Yu evaluated each other on the stage.  Sheh Si Man 
even turned into a "judge" and rated the three lead actors.
	In the film, Cheung Ka Fai and Koo Tin Lok played a drug 
smuggling ring's key member Ah Lam and Siu Yeh.  They fell into an 
"Infernal" identity mystery situation, as brothers who went through life 
and death together fell into the most difficult and also the bloodiest 
choice.  On the road of investigating undercover, Q Sir Ng Chun Yu also 
fell into hardship with the case as BlackJack gave him headaches galore; 
in addition, "Sister Ting" Sheh Si Man would show off her skills and 
performed a beauty rescuing a hero scene when she saved Koo Tin Lok.  The 
host asked Goo Jai if Ka Fai and Chun Yu fell into the water, who would 
he save?  Goo Jai said, "I would jump into the water myself."
	In the film, the "charming triangle" trio of gods Cheung Ka Fai, 
Koo Tin Lok and Ng Chun Yu battles brains and brawn.  In the film, Ka Fai 
and Koo Tin Lok were outstanding members of the group and trusted 
subordinate of boss Kwok Ming.  They have been looking out for each other 
since the start.  The Ng Chun Yu played Q Sir had to rely on undercover 
agents to investigate their whereabouts.  What happened between them 
left them with an indescribable quagmire and a complicated relationship.  
Yesterday the press conference decorated the stage like a bar.  Cheung Ka 
Fai, Koo Tin Lok and Ng Chun Yu talked about the past.  Three buddies of 
many years evaluated each other and even played "Truth or Dare".  When 
asked about what was memorable from the production, Goo Jai said, "The 
most memorable was going to Chun Yu's home for a chat, and working out 
with Ka Fai.  As soon as he saw me he couldn't stop laughing."
	Playing "Sister Ting" in the television series, Sheh Si Man 
reprised the role this time.  With all male co-stars, Sheh Si Man 
revealed that she has never received any special treatment.  She said, "I 
performed the stunts personally and had bruises all over.  To ensure the 
action result, the director was extremely strict with his demands for 
me."  Yesterday as the only actress present, Sheh Si Man received a 
special benefit as she evaluated the three actors like a judge.  On the 
day of the press conference, top Mainland singer Hua Chenyu performed the 
film's Mainland theme song HERE WE ARE.  The Hong Kong film theme song 
will be performed by a heavyweight Hong Kong singer. 

* (2016/07/12) The immortal superstar Leslie Cheung Kwok Wing has left 
us for a long time.  With this year being his 60th birthday, the 
LesFanmily memorial concert took place in Tokyo on the 9th to commemorate 
this forever superstar; this was the second memorial event after the 
April 2nd Hong Kong LesFanmily event.  Leo Ku Kui Ke was again invited to 
participate and performed many songs.  Gei Jai actually adjusted his 
schedule to attend each show to remember "Gor Gor".
	Last Saturday, Ku Kui Ke attended the Japanese performance to 
remember Gor Gor in a white suit.  He performed STARTING FROM ZERO, 
MONICA and other Gor Gor classic hits; Gor Gor's good friend Daffy Tong 
Hok Tak also attended.
	Tong Tong put his hands together and thanked the Gor Gor fans, 
and posed for photos backstage with Gei Jai and Gor Gor's former manger 
and friend Chan Suk Fun.  In addition, Japanese musicians and dancers 
who have worked with Gor Gor also shared their experience with the 
audience and remembered Gor Gor.  Chan Suk Fun presented a crystal crane 
that the Les Fanmily designed to Ge Jai.  It was a music box with Gor 
Gor's songs to thank Gei Jai for his performance and support for the 
establishment of the LesFanmily this year.

* (2016/07/12) LINE WALKER (SI TOH HUNG JEH) will open on August 11th.  
Stars Nick Cheung Ka Fai, Louis Koo Tin Lok, Francis Ng Chun Yu and 
Charmaine Sheh Si Man shot their individual promotional posters.  The 
film company also recently released the film's first poster.  Sheh Si 
Man continued to play Sister Ting and added more action scenes this time.  
Ng Chun Yu and Ah Sheh would have an ambiguous relationship.  Cheung Ka 
Fai in the film played a criminal organization mastermind.  He also went 
to Brazil for the movie for the first time.  Goo Jai said that the most 
memorable was the gun fight scene for him.
	Ah Sheh and Ng Chun Yu had an ambiguous scene, but Chun Yu 
seemed to be complaining a little.  Chun Yu joked, "Every movie has its 
beauty, this time she has to be Sister Ting.  Goo Jai and Ka Fai took the 
Brazil trip, so I took Sister Ting!  Originally the director talked it up 
and said that the kiss scene would be very wild.  I even said, 'What a 
great sacrifice for Sister Ting!'  The director even said, 'Of course!  
It's a movie!  it's not a television series!'  However the result was even 
more conservative than television.  Sister Ting's clothes were less 
revealing than Middle Eastern women's!"
	Chun Yu however said that actually he had to get advice from Ah 
Sheh, since Ah Sheh was more familiar with the LINE WALKER content than 
he was.  He would constantly asked her about the story.  

* (2016/07/12) Nicholas Tse Ting and Sean Lau Ching Wan starred in the new 
film HEARTFALL ARISES (GAING SUM POR), which will open in the middle of 
next month.  During the shoot Ting Fung often cooked for the team, but he 
also had his more mischievous moments when he played pranks on everyone.  
Once he brought curry fish balls and claimed that he made them himself, 
after everyone finished them Ting Fung revealed that he bought them from 
a street snack shop.  Everyone could only helplessly laugh.
	He even turned into CHEF NIC on the set.  Since Ting Fung has 
always been very selective about ingredients, for a hot pot casserole 
scene with Mavis Fan he even personally chose the food.  He even chose 
the chili pepper.  After the shoot everyone enjoyed a feast.  The workers 
called Ting Fung "Detective Chef Nic".  Another lead Lau Ching Wan said 
that he did not get to try Ting Fung's cooking and suspected that Ting 
Fung would only cook for the ladies.

* (2016/07/12) The Longman Leung Lok Man, Sunny Luk Kim Ching directed, 
three Best Actors Aaron Kwok Fu Sing, Tony Leung Ka Fai and Chow Yun Fat 
starred COLD WAR 2 (HONG JIN 2) with Eddie Peng Yu-Yan, Tony Yang and 
Chang Kuo-Chu has been surging since its opening last week.  In less than 
three days it already made over HK$ 20 million at the box office and set 
many records, including the "highest single day box office in Hong Kong 
and Chinese film history" and the "highest opening day box office in Hong 
Kong and Chinese film history".
	The team and the film company were just as concerned with the box 
office performance and inquired about it daily.  Although Fat Gor was 
unable to attend the earlier Hong Kong premiere, his mind was still on 
the matter despite being overseas and said that after returning to Hong 
Kong he definitely will go to the movie himself in support. 

* (2016/07/11) The China Film Queen for three years in a row, Chan Wan 
Seung passed away on the 30th at home in her sleep at age 103.  
Yesterday her family began services at the Hong Kong Funeral Home.  Many 
came to pay their respects like Wu Fung and Petrina Fung Bo Bo.
	A two meter tall portrait of Chan Wan Seung was hung outside 
the hall, which was decorated in simple white.  The hall had screens 
playing Chan Wan Seung's films.  In the program for family and friends 
were her film industry photos, photos with her husband Tong Yu Hong and 
their family.  Chan Wan Seung at the peak of her career married famous 
oncologist Tong Yu Hong then immigrated to Hong Kong.  After her final 
film in 1952 THE MOON-BLANCH'D LAND she retired from film.  Chan Wan 
Seung and her husband had three children.  Her husband Tong Yu Hong 
passed away in 2014.  Her youngest son Tong Sing Ming is a tycoon in 
the food industry.
	Wu Fung yesterday came to bid his friend farewell.  He said that 
he was already Chan Wan Seung's fan at age 7 or 8.  He has seen her 
work.  "Several years ago through friends' introduction I was fortunate 
enough to be a guest at her home.  We also went to the Peak for tea.  I 
know that she liked to play mahjong.  Several days before her passing 
she was still very spirited and played mahjong with friends.  We even 
made plans to meet for tea again, but now we have no way to make it 
happen."

* (2016/07/11) The Johnnie To Kei Fung directed, Louis Koo Tin Lok, Vicki 
Zhao Wei, Wallace Chung Han Leung starred crime film THREE (SAM YUN HUNG) 
earlier shot in the Guangzhou Film Studio.  In one scene 100 actors had to 
perform in slow motion.  Because To Sir did not rely on machines for 
effects and instead asked for actors to perform live, he hired instructors 
to train them for two months.  The actors everyday learned to move at 
snail's pace.
	The film had many fight scenes, the ending even had an unexpected 
shot when over 100 actors performed in slow motion for a 10 minute scene.  
However the scene took two months to rehearse.  The official shoot took 
4 days.  In the physical training the actors had to learn to slow motion 
run, flip, shoot, and turn!  To Sir said, "This slow motion action scene 
is pretty long and doesn't use production technique and post production.  
The actors perform themselves.  This is a new attempt, an ability to 
display space and a collective ability, performing like a stage play.  
This time I arranged for physical and speech instructors to train 
everyone and to teach them how to control the speed and balance of the 
action."  
	Goo Jai said, "Actually the training isn't just learning slow 
motion, I once thought about whether I should brink slow too.  Before the 
shoot I already knew about this 10 minute long action scene.  At first I 
thought it would be done in post production, but actually it had to be 
performed live.  Because everyone had different flexibility, the action 
designs were all different."  Chung Han Leung said that he went to train 
when he was not at work.  He originally thought it would be very easy 
because he had a dance and action background.  However it was not as he 
has imagined.  For slow motion even the joints had to coordinate.  After 
learning about slow motion he found out that each movement had to be 
analyzed very thoroughly!  Zhao Wei felt that she learned decently and 
had some natural responses.  This scene was their case, a disaster 
scene!"
	This time all the actors who were in this slow action shot had to 
learn in two months.  Raymond Wong Ho Yin, Michael Tse Tin Wa and others 
everyday would use their break to train.  They had to stretch.  Wong Ho 
Yin said that their physical abilities were also trained.  They even had 
to learn to walk.  For this scene no one dared to be lazy because no one 
wanted to affect others!

* (2016/07/10) The three Best Actors starred film COLD WAR 2 (HONG JIN 2) 
two nights ago held its premiere in Hong Kong.  Director Longman Leung 
Lok Man, actors Aaron Kwok Fu Sing, Charlie Yeung Choi Nei, Ken Wong Tak 
Bun, Chin Kar Lok and Jeannie Chan Ying attended. The film opened two 
days ago and with HK$ 5.38 million it became the highest opening Hong Kong 
Chinese film ever.  It successfully broke MERMAID (MEI YUN YU)'s record 
and with yesterday's box office it already made over HK$ 10 million in 
two days.  Sing Sing while promoting COLD WAR 2 in Taiwan ran into a 
typhoon.  When he returned to Hong Kong he ran into a jet stream on the 
flight, his return to Hong Kong to promote the film could be said as 
thrilling.
	The film company yesterday announced the latest results.  COLD 
WAR 2's opening box office already surpassed MERMAID to become the highest 
opening for a Hong Kong Chinese film with HK$ 5.38 million.  The film's 
Mainland momentum was also strong, on its first two days as box office 
champion it made almost 200 million RMB.  Boss Bill Kong Chi Keung held 
a toast at the premiere as each actor received a special edition bottle 
of champagne with their name on it.
	Sing Sing was very happy to play the police commissioner 
character.  In film and in life he hoped to be able to maintain this 
idea and ensure the safety of Hong Kong people's lives and assets.  Sing 
Sing was excited about breaking MERMAID's record.  "I am very happy to 
hear about this performance, but the credit this time is not mine alone.  
It was a team effort.  Everyone's effort has been proven not to have gone 
to waste.  Thank you to the entire world including Hong Kong audience for 
supporting the film.  With such a good box office, of course I hope we 
will be able to make a third film.  However it will depend on the boss."
	Sing Sing said that he was already in this police commissioner 
character.  The audience also liked to watch how he protected Hong Kong 
people's lives and assets.  Thus he hoped to be able to continue his 
performance.  As for celebrating, Sing Sing said that he waited for the 
boss and the film company to make arrangements.  Because he would have to 
focus on his August concert rehearsal, he could only try to make time to 
celebrate.  Will he hope that the film will break YOU ARE THE APPLE OF MY 
EYE's Hong Kong box office record?  Sing Sing said, "I hope to receive 
everyone's blessing, to be able to break it, it will also rely on the 
overall strength to support it."  
	Sing Sing and Tony Leung Ka Fai ran into a typhoon while promoted 
COLD WAR 2 in Taiwan.  The troops went two separate ways.  Sing Sing 
first returned to Hong Kong to attend the premiere.  He said that even 
though the flight had delays and ran into turbulence, he still safely 
returned to see everyone.  Sing Sing said that his heart remained with 
Leung Ka Fai and director Luk Kim Ching, who remained in Taiwan.  However 
his being in Hong Kong represented them as well.  Sing Sing also hoped 
that Taiwan fans who were unable to see him would not be disappointed.  
He believed that everyone would understand, perhaps later he will fly to 
Taiwan to thank for the audience for its support.

* (2016/07/10) Taiwan artist Kimmy Qiu Ji yesterday came to Hong Kong for 
a contract signing ceremony and the announcement that she will work on 
two new films WONG GOK NUI YUN GAI (MONGKOK WOMAN STREET) and CHING 
YUN CHAP BAN SUN (LOVER TRANSFER STUDENT) and received support from 
Checkley Sin Kwok Lam, Jacquelin Chong Si Man and Lisa Ch'ng Si Ming.
	Qiu Ji studied film in Beijing and rose to fame with a Taiwan 
variety program, in which she was dubbed the "Taiwan goddess".  Chong Si 
Man, her sister and Yuri Chan Yui Yui taught Qiu Ji how to survive in the 
industry.  Chong Si Man suggested for her to attend more dinners and 
fight for opportunities for herself.  Of course she would also have to 
learn to protect herself.  She said, "Not the dinners that pay, I want 
her to meet more friends."  Qiu Ji said that she was happy to be able to 
work in Hong Kong.  At the end of August she will work on WONG GOK NUI 
YUN GAI.  When asked her character, she said, "I don't know whether I will 
play a rich girl or a thief.  In CHING I will play a wife who lost her 
husband to a mistress.  I don't know how the other actors will be yet."  
As for sexy performance, she said, "No, the company wouldn't do anything 
that would be bad for me.  Image wise I want a refreshing route, 
maybe after 2 or 3 years I will consider again."  Suspected of looking 
like a plastic surgery doll, Qiu Ji stressed that she was all natural.  
She believed that it was an illusion before and after make up.

* (2016/07/09) Lee Sinjie yesterday through Weibo announced the birth of 
her and director husband Oxide Pang Shun's twin baby boys in Kuala Lumpur.  
"Boht sons have reported in.  Both mother and sons are fine, thank you 
everyone for your blessing!"  Aside from praises from fans, Sinjie's 
friends like Gigi Leung Wing Kei, Rene Liu (Lau Yeuk Ying) and Victor 
Wong (Bun Guoon) also rapidly sent their well wishes.  Giving birth to 
her son in January last year, Lau Yeuk Ying congratulated Sinjie online.  
"It's tough for Mama and it will be even tougher from now on!  Let's go!"
	Friends Charlie Yeung Choi Nei and Leung Wing Kei two nights ago 
attended the film COLD WAR 2 (HONG JIN 2)'s event.  Both were happy for 
their sister.  Charlie said that after getting up she got the news from 
Sinjie and decided to fly to visit her next week.  She would leave it to 
Sinjie to decide whether to make her a god mother.  She said that she 
knew how tough it was for Sinjie and believed that if she had to have 
two it would be tough on her too.  As for a gift, Charlie said, "I want 
to give Sinjie a surprise with Gigi, because earlier Gigi and Sinjie gave 
me a surprise."  She said that several days before giving birth Sinjie 
was bed ridden.  She has seen photos of the twins and later she will go 
to see them in person; she did not ask whether Sinjie had a natural 
birth or otherwise, she only knew that she successfully gave birth and 
was happy.
	Gigi due to her upcoming concert will not be able to visit Sinjie 
in the short term, but she bought a gift long ago.  "I gave two baby 
blankets, should I have gotten one and cut it up?  (Will you be a god 
mother?)  I am waiting for Sinjie's guidance."

* (2016/07/09) Dior Cheng Yi Kin and Chrissie Chau Sau Na attended a 
sports brand flagship store opening.  Ekin said that after they worked on 
Lawrence Cheng Tan Shui's film they often attended events and made movies 
together.  He admitted that he has not grown tired of seeing her yet.  
"We haven't seen each other in awhile, since we work together on and off.  
Maybe we only see each other after several few months or half a year."
	Ekin revealed that Sister Na was "superstitious".  "She felt that 
our birthday and time compatibilities are OK."  Sister Na said, "Earlier 
we worked together on the online paid film IGIRL, which premiered on a 
Mainland site two days ago.  It already amde over 8 million in a hour.  
Today's event is on the 8th too, it's good luck."  Ekin said that they 
would not get any bonus.
	Ekin said that he had to support new Hong Kong directors.  "This 
time in the film we played a couple, actually it was still experimental.  
Aside from online screening it was also released at the movies.  (Would 
you get a raise for your next collaboration?)  I haven't thought about 
it, as long as it would be fun it would be fine.  However Sister Na will 
have to gain weight first."  Sister Na said that she had to keep sucking 
in her gut because Ekin was in great shape.  "I have to work with him and 
I know that I have to wear waist baring clothing, so I have a little less 
at breakfast."  Ekin said that Sister Na could open a fitness center.  
What character would they like to play the next time?  Ekin said, 
"Originally I thought Sister Na would be all 'girly', I didn't expect her 
to be decent in action scenes.  Even the stunt team praised her."
	Sister Na said that she recently finished an action film.  "The 
entire film are girls.  It's even all about killing and fighting, full of 
negative energy.  Today I finally see a god, which is very positive!"  
Ekin revealed that he is currently resting and he will have new attempts 
coming up at work, but for now he could not reveal anything. 

* (2016/07/09) The Checkley Sin Kwok Lam directed, Wong Wing Fung 
and Law Bo Yi produced charity film OUR DAYS (NGOR MOON DIK 6E BAN) has 
been heating up in production.  This time it even got the support of 
actors like Alex Fong Lik Sun, Huang Yi, Vincent Wan Yeung Ming, Angie 
Cheong Wei Yee, Mak Cheung Ching and Cheung Kwok Keung.  Their excellent 
acting has added a lot of color to the film.
	Fong Lik Sun recently shot a scene in which he was sharply 
dressed as a banker and a guest presenter at a talent show.  Also on hand 
were the new comer Yuen Chung Yeung and Chan Yan Yin led students.  
Because Siu Fong suddenly appeared on the set, the student actors took 
turn to "collect stamps". Siu Fong said that they would have to wait until 
after the shoot but guaranteed that he would not leave until after the 
photos.  Siu Fong explained that he took time to guest star due to Master 
Sin.  "I am very supportive of Master Sin's directing debut.  In addition 
it is a inspirational school film and I want to spread some positive 
energy to everyone."  He even said that he has not made a school film in 
a long time.  This time reminded him of his past school film experience.  
"Working with a group of new actors, I feel they are very energetic.  I 
hope they would be able to bring some freshness to the audience." 

* (2016/07/09) Angie Shum Yat Ka yesterday revealed at an event that in 
October she will head to Thailand for a ghost film with Kara Wai Ying 
Hung, for which she was very nervous about. 

* (2016/07/08) Aaron Kwok Fu Sing two days ago went from Singapore to 
Taiwan to promote his new film COLD WAR 2 (HONG JIN 2).  Originally 
scheduled for an afternoon press conference then a premiere in the 
evening, Sing Sing was forced to cancel his Taiwan itinerary due to 
Typhoon Nepartak and did not get the chance to meet the fans.  He through 
his manager Siu Mei said, "I am very disappointed too, fans booked some 
of the screenings and I really wanted to watch with them.  However actors 
are passive and have to coordinate with the film company arrangements."
	Reportedly the film company decided to divvy up the troops.  Due 
to the typhoon many flights to Taiwan and Hong Kong were cancelled.  Sing 
Sing and one of the directors yesterday were to return to Hong Kong before 
the flight cancellations in order to attend tonight's COLD WAR 2 events in 
Hong Kong.  Although the Taiwan premiere ceremony last night was 
cancelled, the indoor meet and greet event still took place.  Director 
Sunny Luk Kim Ching led Tony Leung Ka Fai, Eddie Peng Yu-Yan and Chang 
Kuo-Chu in attendance.  The film company said that Leung Ka Fai tonight 
would try to attend the Hong Kong COLD WAR 2 events but will have to see 
about the arrangements.  Sing Sing due to work this afternoon returned to 
Hong Kong earlier yesterday.  COLD WAR 2 opens today, as of 8PM last night 
the Hong Kong and Macau advanced box office was already over HK$ 4 
million. 

* (2016/07/07) "God Class Best Actor" Chow Yun Fat, Aaron Kwok Fu Sing 
and Eddie Peng Yu-Yan promoted their new film COLD WAR 2 (HONG JIN 2) in 
Singapore.  The premiere there filled a shopping center.  Eddie and Sing 
Sing were dressed in suits and came the girls screamed.  Fat Gor and Fat 
Soh Jasmine Tan then appeared.
	As the "Singapore son in law" Fat Gor humorously coaxed Fat Soh 
to speak up.  He joked on the stage, "Please welcome Mrs. Chow to say a 
few words to everyone, should she speak Singlish or Cantonese?"  Fat Soh 
chose to speak Cantonese to support her husband.  "How are you everyone, 
I hope everyone would support this film!"  Speaking of this performance, 
Fat Gor joked, "This time I purely made this movie for fun, I am very 
grateful to the cast for playing with me and taking selfies!"
	Seeing Fat Gor nodding, Eddie immediately bowed to his idol Fat 
Gor.  Speaking of working with three Best Actors, Eddie said that playing 
a villain against the three was a challenge.  He also said in less than 
fluent Cantonese, "I am a good guy!"  He admitted that he longed to work 
with Fat Gor.  "This time I wasn't lucky enough to have any scene with 
Fat Gor.  I have more with Sing Sing, in all of which I am getting pushed 
around."  

* (2016/07/07) Simon Yam Tat Wa, Jordan Chan Siu Chun and Philip Ng Won 
Lung two nights ago worked on their new film COLOR OF THE GAME (HAK BAK 
MAI GUNG) in Mongkok.  They stood on top of a 4 story tall platform.  
However, Yam Tat Wa and Chan Siu Chun showed no fear.  They chatted as they looked 
down and often took out their phones to shoot the streets.  Sitting on 
the platform Ng Won Lung also let his legs swing.  Rain suddenly came, 
they did not hear the director yell cut and continued to pose.  The crew 
waved to them and they quickly left.  Then he shot a scene in which they 
went to a street stall for drinks.

* (2016/07/07) The China Film Queen for three years in a row, Nancy Chan 
Wan Seung passed away in her Hong Kong home on the 30th at age 96.  Chan 
Wan Seung has starred in MULAN JOINS THE ARMY, IT HAPPENED IN ONE NIGHT, 
SU WU HERDS SHEEP and over 50 films.  Her popularity was unrivaled on 
the Bund and was as famous as Hu Die and Zhou Xuan.
	The popular female star of the 30s and 40s, Chan Wan Seung passed 
away in her sleep on the 30th at age 96.  Her funeral services will take 
place Monday.
	Chan Wan Seung was originally named Chan Man Keung.  Born in 
Hong Kong in August 10, 1919, she moved to Guangzhou with her parents in 
her childhood.  Chan Wan Seung was a natural beauty who could sing and 
dance.  Joining show business has been her childhood dream, despite her 
parents' interference she still got her wish in the end.  When Chan Wan 
Seung was young she was a student of the Chinese Opera master Yi Jianquan, 
learning Mandarin, Qun Opera, Beijing Opera, and Cantonese Opera.  Her 
stage name "Chan Wan Seung" came from her master, which came from the Li 
Bai poem verse.
	In 1933, the 14 year old Chan Wan Seung was pretty and able to 
sing and dance.  She joined a film company and began her show business 
journey.  Two years later, Hong Kong director So Yi invited her to come 
to Hong Kong to make movies.  In 1936 due to NEW YOUTH she became an 
overnight sensation.  In 4 short years she continuously made over 20 
Cantonese films.
	In 1938, Chan Wan Seung caught the eye of benefactor Zhang 
Shankun and went to make movies in Shanghai.  She started in the Mandarin 
film MULAN JOINS THE ARMY, played Hua Mulan and received good reviews.  
Because she became more famous, she rocked the Bund as a "Wan Seung" 
fever arose there.  Not only many stores was named "Wan Seung" but some 
even established Chan Wan Seung fan clubs.  Her every move became the 
index for trendy women.  At the time Chan Wan Seung was as famous as Hu 
Die and Zhou Xuan.  Since 1938, Chan Wan Seung won the China Film Queen 
honor for three years straight.
	A few years after the fall of Shanghai, Chan Wan Seung made many 
famous films like SU WU HERDS SHEEPS and WILD ROSE.  In the film based 
on Ba Jin's book HOME her role of Cousin Qin even received raves.
	However, as her show business career reached its peak Chan Wan 
Seung in 1945 married Hong Kong director Tong Yu Hong and retired from 
the film industry.  She returned to Hong Kong to focus on taking care of 
her family.  Aside from in 1962 when she made movies for Hong Kong Hsin 
Wha Motion Pictures like THE MOON BLANCH'D LAND, for the past half a 
century she lived a quiet life in Hong Kong and rarely participated in 
community events.  Thus the young and middle aged generation knew little 
about this superstar of a generation.

* (2016/07/07) Kara Wai Ying Hung in the film HAPPINESS (HUNG WON SI NGOR) 
played an aging Alzheimer's disease patient; she not only had to appear 
without any make up but also had to wear aging make up to look more 
realistic.  The vain Sister Hung early in the production did not even 
dare to watch the playback, but she admitted that the role was worth 
everything.  "I want to show the audience the range of Wai Ying Hung's 
acting!  I also hope that more people would get to know about this 
illness!"
	To capture the spirit of an Alzheimer's patient, Sister Hung had 
an easier grasp because her mother was diagnosed with the illness.  For 
over a decade she has taken care of her, which made Sister Hung even more 
experienced than the average person.  "Mama around age 60 wouldn't 
remember a lot.  Sometimes when she wants to find one thing it has 
actually always been in her hand.  At first I made fun of her, but later 
it started to become serious.  The doctor diagnosed her with Alzheimer's 
as her brain began to shrink to the point that her skull had gaps.  In 
recent years her condition has deteriorated, she started to not be able 
to recognize her own children and her ability to move has been affected."  
During the shoot, Sister Hung would imitate Mama's everyday gestures like 
walking, picking things up, angles of thinking.  Yet these were all 
superficial gestures.  If she wanted to touch the audience's hearts she 
needed to put in more effort.
	Wai Ying Hung said that in recent years she especially liked to 
work with new directors.  "Because when actors sometimes are too well 
honed, they need new director's angle and new thinking to break through 
that frame and bring out something unexpected.  Thus their acting can be 
even wider and broader.  The process actually is a pleasure."  Was she 
confident that HAPPINESS would bring her another Best Actress award?  
Sister Hung said, "I won't think about that too much, instead I feel a 
sense of duty.  I hope this movie would introduce more people to 
Alzheimer's.  In Hong Kong few people have in depth understanding of this 
illness." 

* (2016/07/07) "Festival Grand Cinema" opening ceremony and THREE (SAM 
YUN HUNG) film premiere took place two nights ago.  Guests included Peter 
Lam Kin Ngok, Terry Lai, Johnnie To Kei Fung, Louis Koo Tin Lok, Yau Nai 
Hoi, Richie Jen (Yam Yin Chai), Edmond Leung Hon Leung, William So Wing 
Hong, Wong Ka Keung, the Grasshoppers, Michael Wong Man Tak, Lynn Xiong 
(Hung Doi Lam), Bernice Liu Bik Yi and Alex Lam Tak Shun.  Goo Jai 
revealed that in the film he truly slapped Vicki Zhao Wei and even left 
red finger marks on her face.
	The master of ceremony asked Koo Tin Lok how he handled having to 
slap Zhao Wei in the film.  Goo Jai admitted that during the shoot he 
could use camera angles.  He truly slapped Zhao Wei loudly.  He also 
joked that he was very envious of Wallace Chung Han Leung for being able 
to sleep during the shoot.  Sometimes he would fall asleep even during 
rehearsal and he did not feel right about waking him up.  Goo Jai joked, 
"Although this wasn't a category III film, all the bed scenes are truly 
rare!"
	To Kei Fung during the interview had chemistry with Koo Tin Lok 
after working together many times.  Thus he wanted to come up with a 
harder character for him.  Chung Han Leung got an easier to play 
character.  Goo Jai also said that he learned a lot from To Sir and felt 
like a part of the family, especially during the shoot he was the happiest 
about all the great food.  Sometimes on location they would also look for 
good food all over.  Goo Jai also revealed that this time the entire film 
was almost completely shot inside the hospital.  He did not have to brave 
the weather but a long range slow motion action scene took the actors 
several months to complete.  To Sir said that he shot it that way without 
any photography technique assistance mainly because he wanted the actor's 
pace and speed of their performance; he also thanked the doctors and the 
nurses for participating in the shoot assistance.
	Speaking of slapping Zhao Wei, Goo Jai admitted that he really 
slapped her.  Because To Sir said that if the scene was not shot well 
they might need to shoot again.  Thus he already let loose on Zhao Wei 
the first time, but in the end he still needed to make four or five times 
before finishing.  To Sir said, "The slap was sudden, sometimes we didn't 
know which mark would be accurate.  We needed a little coordination!"  Goo 
Jai also admitted that Zhao Wei's face was all red with his finger marks 
from being slapped.  He immediately pointed at To Sir and said, "I told 
me to do it!"  To Sir joked, "If we fake it it would have been worse!  
Sometimes we don't know which reaction would be the right one!"

1. TA KUNG PAO, JULY 8 2016, ONE WEEK IN FILM AND TELEVISION
SECRET LIFE OF PETS IS A HIT IN HONG KONG AND TAIWAN

	Last week the Hollywood animated film THE SECRET LIFE OF PETS 
opened in Hong Kong and Taiwan.  In Hong Kong it made HK$ 13.81 million, 
in Taiwan it made NT$ 70.61 million and the film landed on the top spot 
on both box offices.  This film will open in the U.S. this week.  In 
addition, another big Hollywood film THE LEGEND OF TARZAN was also 
released in both places, in Hong Kong it made HK$ 5.81 million and in 
Taiwan it made NT$ 13.81 million; this film was simultaneously released in 
the U.S. and opened second on the weekend box office chart.
	In the Mainland, NOW YOU SEE ME 2 made 259 million RMB in first 
place, over two weeks it made 548 million RMB; this film in Hong Kong 
after four weeks made HK$ 29.86 million.  INDEPENDENCE DAY: RESURGENCE 
made 205 million RMB in second place, over two weeks it made 445 million 
RMB; this film in Hong Kong after two weeks made HK$ 33.18 million, in 
comparison to the first film's HK$ 50.3 million 20 years ago it was a 
little disappointing.  The new release TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES: OUT 
OF THE SHADOWS made 170 million RMB in third place; this film in Hong 
Kong over five weeks made HK$ 4.97 million in an average showing.
	The newly released Mainland, Korea and Hong Kong co-production 
BOUNTY HUNTERS made 118 million RMB in fourth place and was considered a 
summer Chinese film blockbuster with Korean director Terra Shin and stars 
Lee Min-Ho, Wallace Chung Han Leung, Tiffany Tang Yan, and Karena Ng Chin 
Yu.  Unfortunately it was no match for three Hollywood blockbusters; this 
film will open in Hong Kong on July 28th.  Another Mainland and Korea 
co-production SO I MARRIED MY ANTI FAN with Korean director Kim Tae-Yong 
and stars Park Chanyeol, Yuan Shanshan, Jiang Chao and Seohyun opened with 
58 million RMB in fifth place.  Two Korean directors faced off directly 
in the Mainland and in the first week BOUNTY HUNTERS had the slight 
edge.  The huge U.S. hit FINDING DORY over three weeks made 238.7 
million RMB; the Mainland animated film THE ADVENTURES OF THE UGULY 
DUCKLING opened with only 2.83 million RMB.  Seemingly this summer 
animated films has not yet been able to break open the market.  The 
Mainland and U.S. animation co-production TIBETAN ROCK DOG last week had 
advanced screenings and made 1.4 million RMB. - LAM KAM BO

2. TA KUNG PAO, JULY 7 2016, ASIAN FILMS
SAILOR SUIT AND MACHINE GUN GRADUATION: LEGENDARY NO LONGER 

	The so-called comedic effect often is created through strong 
contrast, like the once popular Japanese "humor mystery novel" master 
Jiro Akagawa creating a "police wife and thief husband" series.  The 
conflicting identities of husband and wife was even worse than the 
Hollywood film MR. AND MRS. SMITH.  Akagawa early on wrote a novel titled 
SAILOR SUIT AND MACHINE GUN that also played with this concept.  After it 
was adapted into a film it even became a film legend. - HUNG KWONG
	The biggest selling point of SAILOR SUIT AND MACHINE GUN is 
rolling the innocent high school girl and the vicious mob boss all into 
one.  This novel that was published in the late 70s was adapted to the 
silver screen in 1981 and became a hit.  This legend's influence has 
endured for almost 40 years.  Kadokawa Pictures presented this film's 
sequel SAILOR SUIT AND MACHINE GUN - GRADUATION for their 40th 
anniversary film.
	The stage of the sequel story was a town with an aging population.  
Once fourth in line to the mob throne, the high school girl after 
successfully seeking revenge turned legitimate and the organization 
into a cafe in the shopping district while she enjoyed the last year of 
her high school life.  Yet, when she discovered a neighbor has fallen for 
a model swindling case and mysterious drug deals in the neighborhood......
behind everything was a villainous property development's plot.  To find 
out the truth, protect the community and the neighbors, she rebuilt the 
mob and again was swept into the mob struggle.

Failure To Sell Youth
	Adapted from the SAILOR SUIT AND MACHINE GUN novel, three films 
and television series have been made over 30 years.  Hiroko Yakushimaru, 
Tomoyo Harada and Masami Nagasawa have played the lead role respectively.  
When the so-called "once in 1000 year pretty young girl" Kanna Hashimoto 
starred in this sequel, perhaps the screen writer thought this story was 
too well known the already retired mob boss high school girl appeared 
without any background set up.  If you are not an experienced Japanese 
drama fan or loved to watch old Japanese films (actually not too "old", 
it was from the same period as the 2014 Leisure and Cultural Services 
Department's "New Japanese Cinema In 1980s" exhibit).  Basically, they 
would be lost with this story.  Even the brief flashback scenes would 
make people have a hard time with this fantastic story set up.  Even 
worse, this film that sells pretty young girl (sailor suit) actually is 
truly talking about the problem of the "aging population".
	In the film the mob headquarter/cafe is located in a remote 
location, a shopping district with most of the stores closed.  One could 
say that this type of commercial districts that were filled with seniors 
was a frequently seen phenomenon in mid to small sized Japanese towns.  
Characters who interacted with the lead aside from high school classmates 
and mobsters of her own or rivals were mostly seniors.  Of course, even 
more importantly, the point to the entire mob land grab plot was that 
seniors needed care and could easily be swindled......they had to be that 
way for it to work.  Finally, through the villains the Japanese audience 
was lectured about not flocking to move to big cities and having to stay 
in where you grew up and take care of your own families.  Overlooking the 
fact that whether these themes made sense, a commercial film that was 
expected to sell youth and lightheartedness would inevitably drive away 
some viewers with such talk.

Dull Production Methods
	The background of SAILOR SUIT AND MACHINE GUN - GRADUATION was 
already a dull town.  Lead actor Kanna Hashimoto's performance and even 
the pace of the entire film were so dull that they became frustrating.  
Actually when SAILOR SUIT AND MACHINE GUN created a box office legend in 
1981, it made the novel and even lead actress Hiroko Yakushimaru and her 
theme song into huge hits.  Most of the credit might belong to the 
director Shinji Somai.  His work had a strong visual style.  On their 
second collaboration and still in school, Hiroko Yakushimaru under his 
camera gave an even more layered performance than in her previous film 
DREAMY FIFTEEN.  The first SAILOR SUIT AND MACHINE GUN film could be said 
as the beginning of Kadokawa Pictures' big success in the 80s.  In the 
years that followed, Hiroko Yakushimaru became the highest grossing 
actress in Japan.  Only films with kittens or puppies would be able to 
knock her off the box office.
	SAILOR SUIT AND MACHINE GUN - GRADUATION's original work also 
came from Jiro Akagawa, published ten years after the first.  At the time 
the Japanese economic bubble was at its peak, land prices have gone to 
insane levels. Thus, land grab became the common theme in various popular
novels and films.  Yet, for a sequel movie that was made over 30 years 
later, this idea of course could not be used.  Thus the land grab also 
needed to be mixed with senior swindling, medical benefit services 
monopoly.
	Yet, for a film company that only had 40 history, its anniversary 
film in comparison to similar work from veteran shops like Shochiku and 
Nikkatsu still appeared to be lifeless (despite its youth idol packaging).  
Such planning and execution truly made people a little concerned with the 
future of Kadokawa Pictures.

3. TA KUNG PAO, JULY 7 2016, LIGHT SHADOW PATH
HOW HONG KONG FILM COMPANIES CAN STRENGTHEN THEMSELVES 

	Earlier a forum about how the film industry could "seek to 
strengthen itself through change and go against the tides" took place.  
Some might be curious, was Hong Kong film industry not in great shape?  
Among the Lunar New Year film this year, the top three were all Hong 
Kong director made films with Stephen Chow Sing Chi's MERMAID, Soi Cheang 
Po Shui's THE MONKEY KING 2 and Wong Jing's FROM VEGAS TO MACAU 3 (DOH 
SING FUNG WON III).  On the surface, the Hong Kong film industry indeed 
looked decent; but actually it hid some concerns that have already 
gradually surfaced.
	The film industry has the so-called "main investor" and 
"participant investor".  "Main investor" refers to the investor who is 
in control of the project.  "Participant investor" refers to the investor 
who invests but do not drive the project.  "Main investor" often is 
responsible for distribution and promotion.  Distribution has 
commission and promotion has salary.  Thus "main investors" have all the 
advantages in the investment.  On the other hand, "participant 
investors" are almost silent partners and completely passive.  Usually 
the "main investor" company is the company that starts the project, 
through ways like alliance agreements with directors it enables directors 
and screen writers to develop stories and turn them into movies.  Simply 
said, in order to become the "main investor" company you have to first 
sign director contracts.  Most recently many Chinese film companies have 
signed contracts with different conditions with Hong Kong directors.  
These directors' "main investor" film companies for the next three years 
definitely will not be Hong Kong film companies.  In addition, in the 
past three years, Tsui Hark, Andrew Lau Wai Keung, Wong Jing, Felix Chong 
Man Keung, Alan Mak Siu Fai and other directors' films will all have 
Mainland companies as their "main investor" companies.  Director Johnnie 
To Kei Fung's Milkyway Image's major shareholder is Hairun, meaning 
that after he finished the contracts on his hands his films' "main 
investor" would mostly likely be Hairun and not Hong Kong film companies.  
This Mainland and Hong Kong film company host and guest positional change 
has already become the trend.  Although for now the film releases still 
have more Hong Kong subjects, in the future more films of Chinese flavor 
like AMERICAN DREAM IN CHINA and THE TAKING OF TIGER MOUNTAIN would 
probably appear.  In other words, the Hong Kong film industry has gone 
from exporting films slowly to exporting talent.  Then how should Hong 
Kong film and especially Hong Kong film companies survive in the tough 
times?
	Since tycoons joined the film industry, the trend of signing 
high price contracts with big directors has not ceased.  They thought 
that with big directors they must be able to make excellent work.  These 
film bosses forgot that big directors became big directors because they 
have made some outstanding films.  These outstanding films were mostly 
made before the directors were famous or at their lowest.  A BETTER 
TOMORROW (YING HUNG BOON SIK)'s John Woo (Ng Yu Sum) has been down for a 
lot time, he "waited three years" to be able to "find himself".  Lau Wai 
Keung and Mak Siu Fai before INFERNAL AFFAIRS (MO GAN DOH) had three 
films that bombed.  Thus, film productions should find some directors who 
are not famous yet but have potentials instead of "buying brand names".  
The film industry has always been this way, especially Hong Kong films.  
Creativity comes first, the competition is not with directors' 
reputation but film content.  Unfortunately, most bosses thought that 
the businesses they operated were merger and acquisition and not the

  Police Inspector Tung tracks criminal Shing to a deserted fisherfolk

  outerspace monster invades the Earth and makes mincemeat of the
  superhero sent to meet him. So world leaders call on all citizens to
  design a super robot, to defeat the outerspace monster and save the

[ THE FILM CATALOGUE ]
  In December 1941, Japan expands the occupation of its neighbouring
  countries to Southeast Asia. The railway from Tianjin to Nanjing in East
  China became a key military transportation route, heavily guarded by
  Japanese soldiers.

  Railroad worker Ma Yuan leads a team of freedom fighters. Using his deep
  knowledge of the train network, he and his men sabotage it, ambushing
  Japanese soldiers and stealing supplies to feed the starving Chinese.

  Although the freedom fighters have no weapons of their own, they employ
  whatever tools are at hand, including shovels, loose railway track planks
  and diverted trains. The local Chinese call the unlikely heroes the
  "Railroad Tigers".

  The freedom fighters find themselves on the wrong side of the tracks when
  the Japanese send reinforcements to Shandong. In an act of defiance, Ma
  Yuan launches his most dangerous mission yet, blowing up a
  heavily-guarded railroad bridge.

  When the Japanese learn of the crippling plan, which will derail the war
  effort, the stakes are raised even higher.

  Acting Police Commissioner Sean Lau is promoted to the highest rank in
  the police force. Joe, son of Deputy Police Commissioner Waise Lee who
  is behind the conspiracy, is taken into custody and Waise is forced to
  retire. But the mastermind remains unknown, until the resurface of a
  former police chief who unveils an unprecedented scheme to corrupt the
  police force. Things get more complicated when senior counsel Oswald
  Kan leads an impeachment proceeding against Sean. Oswald’s every

	Korean Cultural Center NY, a branch of the Ministry of Culture, 
Sports and Tourism (MCST) of the Republic of Korea, is proud to announce 
a new film series to launch Korean Movie Night New York: Master Series 
– a showcase of the works of Korea’s leading filmmakers.  
	Co-presented with Subway Cinema as a part of the 15th New York 
Asian Film Festival (NYAFF), the inaugural Korean Movie Night New York 
– Master Series will focus on Director/Producer Lee Joon-ik, a master of 
Korean historical drama. The program will consist of 6 of Director Lee’s 
most representative films, with the screenings held June 28 - July 2 at 
Walter Reade Theater (165 West 65th St.) and SVA Beatrice Theater (333 
West 23rd St.). 
	In the past two decades, he has produced, directed, and even 
appeared in over 20 films, many of which have played key roles in shaping 
the Korean cinescape. More than any other Korean filmmaker, Lee Joon-ik 
has focused on telling the stories about the Korean society and its 
traditions though the format of historical dramas, often with razor-sharp 
satire and elements of black comedy, skillfully creating fictional 
stories around historical characters, and also reflecting on Korea’s 
contemporary politics. 
	While historical drama is one of the staples of Korean cinema, 
director Lee has been responsible for the genre’s now decade long 
resurgence with his 2005 hit King And The Clown. Having established 
himself as a leading master of the genre, he has continued to make 
historic dramas as his preferred mode of communicating with the audience, 
innovatively utilizing his art to allow Korean history and culture to be 
better understood by a growing international audience, and also to 
generations of young Koreans.

	Korean Movie Night New York (KMN) is redesigned as "Korean Movie 
Night New York: Premiere Showcase" and “Korean Movie Night New York: 
Master Series” in 2016.  It was a continuing series of bi-weekly 
film screenings that introduces the full spectrum of both contemporary and 
classic Korean cinema to New York audiences, from popular blockbusters, 
independent films, and documentaries, to animation and family movies. 
KMN was launched in 2010 as a successor to Korean Cine Forum, an earlier 
film screening series that was organized by the Korean Cultural Service

	Dongju: The Portrait of a Poet is a biographical film about Korean 
poet Yun Dong-ju, set during the Japanese colonial era. Written by 
arthouse director Shin Yeon-shick, and shot entirely in black and white, 
the film follows Dong-ju and his friend Mong-kyu, as they react in 
different ways to the harsh realities of their lives.

THE THRONE

	“The film’s compassion flows audaciously in all directions, as Lee 
extends a full measure of human complexity to every figure in the tragedy, 
all of them trapped in one way or another by a rigid social order that 
regularly turned family members into enemies” – Justine Chang, Variety 
	The Throne is a tragic tale of 27-year-old Crown Prince Sado, who 
was ordered by his father, King Yeongjo, to be locked inside a wooden rice 
chest in 1762. The film was South Korea’s entry for the Best Foreign 
Language Film at the 88th Academy Awards. 

Friday, July 1 at SVA Beatrice Theatre - Historical Dramas, 6:00pm 
KING AND THE CLOWN 
2005 | 119 min | 35mm | Korean with English subtitles

	A critical and commercial hit that became the highest grossing 
Korean film of its time, King and The Clown follows the intricate web of 
desires and jealousies between Joseon Dynasty king Yonsan, his consort, 
and two male traveling performers. The film kick-started the resurgence of 
Korean historical dramas on the big screen which had traditionally been 
one of the most popular genres of Korean cinema. 

8:10pm Talk with Director Lee Joon-ik 
	The in-depth talk and Q&A session will focus on Director Lee’s 
preference for the historical drama format. 

9:10pm Blades of Blood
2010 | 111min | 35mm | Korean with English subtitles

	As the closing film of the New York Asian Film Festival 2010, and 
adapted from a popular manhwa, Blades of Blood is a sweeping 16th century 
epic of political intrigue and revenge with the legendary blind swordsman 
(portrayed by Hwang Jung-min) at the center of action.

ONCE UPON A TIME IN A BATTLEFIELD

	Lee Joon-ik’s very first foray into period comedy is a 
refreshingly postmodern twist on Korea’s ancient history, specifically on 
the 7th century conflict between the three Korean kingdoms of Baekje, 
Silla, and Goguryeo, effectively (and hilariously) serving as a metaphor 
for political regionalism of contemporary Korea.

BATTLEFIELD HEROES

	The sequel to Once Upon A Time in a Battlefield, and the official 
selection of New York Asian Film Festival 2011, focuses on the war between 
the southern Korean state of Silla and the larger northern Korean state of 
Goguryeo, set in 668.

	Lee Joon-ik and Cho Chul-hyun have been working closely ever since 
the start of Lee Joon-ik’s earlier film career in late 90’s. The talk and 
Q&A will focus on the story development process of their films.
