After 4 years away from film, Man Chi hoped to make more good movies for the audience to remember him by before retiring at age 60 next year. Troubled by diabetes, he said without any fear of taboo, "I won't die so soon". Meanwhile Bak Ji resisted playing a couple with girlfriend Ngan Cheuk Ling, but she instead said that she would not mind. After the ceremony, Man Ji asked his on screen son Bak Ji, "Would I get any daughter in law tea?" Later Bak Ji and Cheung Kai Chung presented tea to elders Man Ji and Ng Ka Lai. Man Ji already prepared lai see for Bak Ji, then gave away HK$ 100 lai see all around. Man Ji revealed that he has not made a film in 4 years. This time he caught the eyes of the director and the producer and he really liked the character in the film. The zombie fight is like everyone uniting to defeat the negative energy in the society, which was very thoughtful. He would even sing Cantonese Opera with Ng Ka Lai, with whom he has not worked with in over a decade. On his first day of work, the young people were all very nice and worked seriously. That was priceless. Man Ji revealed that in recent years diabetes has troubled him. Last year he has been on a Chinese medicine regiment and exercise for half a year and his condition has already eased. However he could not be proud. "The biggest problem is that I am a 'rick bucket', but the more rice I have the higher my diabetes index climb. I could only stop. I have to be healthy and moving to be able to make good movies. I am 59 this year, I plan to retire next year at 60. Before retiring I hope to make more good movies for myself and the audience to remember me by. (will you return to TVB for a series?) For now I don't have this order, I am interested. The most important is to have health, anything then can coordinate. (Is your diabetes serious?) I am grateful that I won't die so soon, I definitely won't die so soon. I would try to make more performances that I can answer to the audience for." Ngan Cheuk Ling and boyfriend Bak Ji would not play a couple in the film, but would be paired with Cheung Kai Chung. However they would not have any scene that would be too intimate, only hand touching. Bak Ji would not mind his girlfriend having intimate scenes with other actors. "We are all professional actors, but I would according to the character requirement keep a close eye on my girlfriend to help Cheung Kai Chung get her. (Would you remind Ah Chung to watch himself with your girlfriend?) I wouldn't do that, we are all professionals." Would Ngan Cheuk Ling normally sharing acting ideas with her boyfriend? She said, "We are very artistic, we would talk about acting. Our interests are similar, privately we would always talk about characters. We are very dull." Bak Ji said, "We aren't really very dull, just a little dull." When would the shoot end? Bak Ji sensitively widened his eyes with a look of surprise, actually he misunderstood that he was being asked when they would be done dating and break up. He laughed and said, "I misunderstood what you meant, haha." Would they play a couple in the future? Ngan Cheuk Ling said, "He said 'no,', I can." Bak Ji said, "I am really bad, I am afraid of being embarrassed." Ngan Cheuk Ling continued, "He said that he would be afraid of being distracted when we would work together, but this time we have been very focused. As long as we are working with good co-stars we are fine. He now says no, in the end maybe he will be able to." Bak Ji said that he would consider when the opportunities would arise. Speaking of playing a couple would raise their price tags, Ngan Cheuk Ling said, "That's got nothing to do with it. I only feel that the meaning is even more important, but I won't resist working together as a couple." * (2016/07/06) The Pegasus Motion Pictures released, Raymond Wong Pak Ming produced, Korean director Terra Shin directed, Lee Min-Ho, Wallace Chung Han Leung, Tiffany Tang Yan, Karena Ng Chin Yu, Louis Fan Siu Wong and Jeremy Jones (Tsui Chi Hei) starred summer action comedy BOUNTY HUNTERS opened in the Mainland and broke 100 million yuan in three days despite competition from Hollywood and animated films. She even leaned against a pillar and rested her eyes. After Gaile's shoot she rushed to chat with the team but had little exchange with Stephy and Chau Sau Na. Stephy and Chau Sau Na appeared to get along much better. When they were not in a scene, they sat together and chatted. They even took out their phones for selfies. After winning the Huabiao Best Actor Award in the Mainland, he recently received his third Special Administrative Region government honor with the Bronze Bauhinia badge. Earlier the new film that he produced and starred in, SHOCK WAVE (CHAK DAN JUEN GA), also successfully wrapped up production. Wa Jai even introduced this Cross Harbor Tunnel that was constructed for the production as it was officially unveiled! Wa Jai praised how highly realistic this "Cross Harbor Tunnel" was and joked that he was in Hung Hom during the shoot! For the new film, the team constructed a "one and only" Cross Harbor Tunnel, the first replica of its kinds in Hong Kong film history. After over two months of production, earlier the entire team finally completed this historical mission as the film officially wrapped up production! That night for Wa Jai's "solo scene" rain poured often during the shoot. After completing the shoot when Wa Jai, director Herman Yau Lai To and producer Koo prepared to pop bottles of champagne to celebrate at the "tunnel" entrance, rain immediately stopped. Even though it was already early in the morning, after many hours of production the team did not appear to be tired at all. Instead laughter lingered. The team after drinking champagne and taking group photos took the chance to "collect stamps" with Wa Jai. However because many asked, Wa Jai was unable to pose with each of them individually. Wa Jai immediately said that he would see the team again. "We still have the appreciation banquet, the celebration banquet, when the film passes 1 billion at the box office we will be able to have dinner again to celebrate." Wa Jai stood in front of this highly realistic "tunnel" and joked, "I thought I was really in Hung Hom!" Later he also introduced the "tunnel". "This is the Cross Harbor Tunnel, even if the government wants to take back this tunnel it still belongs to us. This is the tunnel that we built, here is the tunnel entrance and over there is the Causeway Bay to Tsim Sha Tsui exit." Wa Jai stated that this project was rather enormous and thanked the art department colleagues for creating the highly realistic "tunnel". "At first we thought about shooting on location. Because at night one tube would be closed we hoped to be able to shoot from the other side. Although in the end we had to spend so much money to build it, I am very impressed with the workers who built this tunnel. I hope everyone will be able to see our effort." Speaking of this tunnel that took almost two months to build would be removed, Wa Jai said that he would miss it. "If something doesn't go, other things would not come. Perhaps next time we would build something else. From Central last time to the Tunnel this time, I hope Hong Kong film will be more and more international and reaching our self sufficient ideals. I wish that in the future Hong Kong film will be even more solid." Wa Jai admitted that each scene that was shot in the tunnel was rather memorable, not only the new actors' effort could be seen but also many extras were not afraid of danger and coordinated with many explosion scenes. In the end he said, "Director Yau Lai To and I have known each other for many years, finally I have made with him a movie that I am pleased with and can answer to myself for." * (2016/07/04) 53 year old Jet Li (Lee Nin Kit) has been rumored to be wheel chair bound due to illness. Yesterday he attended a Beijing charity event and personally dispelled the rumor. Lee Nin Kit said that it was an example that he cited once when he encouraged Hong Kong university students about life choices. In 2000 the doctor once warned him that due to his leg injury he might be wheel chair bound in old age. He stressed that he had a thyroid problem and would positively face the illness, but he truly was not in a wheel chair. Due to his religion he no longer fully focus on his film career. She said, "This film has many night shoots, I managed to be trained in 'dead in daylight' skills. Working with the two of them has been very pleasant!" It's delicious and I feel very happy. Of course I don't get to cook, I only am responsible for setting the table, bringing out the food, my most important responsibility is to 'eat', hahaha!" He revealed that he loved to eat, every time he was responsible for "sweeping up" of all the remaining food. On the day of the set visit, Chung Han Leung beat an egg for Zhao Wei, but the bowl had too little egg and too much sauce. He careful stirred to away spillage. Playing a brain doctor, Zhao Wei was still at work so she was frying eggs in the kitchen in a doctor robe. The fried egg and onion dish she made seemed simple but was the most suitable for Goo Jai. He gladly had more than his fill. When everyone was busy in the kitchen, Goo Jai was just as silent as the cop he liked as he quietly "watched from the sideline". Why did he not cook? he said, "With so many masters, do I need to? TA KUNG PAO, JUNE 2016, ASIAN FILMS SEX HIDDEN IN THE BOOK: THE HANDMAIDEN Korean/Chosun film started early in the century during the Japanese colonial age. From the recently rediscovered Korean films of the 30s and 40s, the dialogue at the time were mostly Korean and Japanese mixed and took an almost realistic language strategy. Korean director Park Chan-Wook's latest film THE HANDMAIDEN took place in the 30s Korea. The characters in the film also used a mixture of Japanese and Korean. An era's language phenomenon was brought back. In the 1930s Japanese ruled colonial Chosun, a conspirator with the Japanese received mining rights to gold mountains as a reward. He lived in a mansion deep in the hills with his late Japanese wife's niece. The Korean traitor's interest was collecting various rare books, thus he needed his Japanese wife's enormous family fortune. The way was to marry her niece. Only after receiving the enormous inheritance, the niece drew the attention of a swindler. The swindler pretended to be a fallen Japanese duke, as he wanted her wealth through marriage. Thus the false duke found a young pickpocket to sneak into the mansion as a handmaiden to the niece to talk her into running away with him......this was one of the two different angles in THE HANDMAIDEN. Frank Sex Scene The film had two parts, one was a plot within a plot, a scheme within a scheme swindling story. In the different teams between two women and a man, he thought that he was plotting against her, but in the end was the victim. As for whether any the scheme was viable, whether the mansion tyrant's details were credible, they have become other questions. Ultimately, as long as they looked viable they were fine. Actually, the niece would read some frank sex novels for her uncle. One of them was the Japanese translation of our country's classic GOLDEN LOTUS, as well as Japanese imitations of French Marquis de Sade's work. The niece dressed up and read the words of those books aloud, not only to provide entertainment to her uncle and others but also to promote his book collection. His collection was filled with some "dirty books". The writer suspected that even if THE HANDMAIDEN completely removed those rather daring and frank lesbian sex scenes, these "reading" scenes alone might already be enough for a category III film rating. Speaking of which, this film was about reading and collecting books. In it a group of people sitting to listen to someone read was a very classic activity, and echoed in SALO when a group of villains listening to people telling sex stories. Fictional Time And Space Of course, viewers who paid attention might suspect that the rare Japanese version of THE GOLDEN LOTUS 80 years ago might already be priceless, but Japanese imitations of Marquis de Sade's work might not have appeared until after the Meiji Restoration at the soonest. Could such "new" books sell for a good price? Thus, the so-called collection interest's biggest purpose in the film probably would still be enabling a lot amount of "dirty books" and erotic paintings to appear in the film. Yet for the niece to keep reading, she not only was tired of Japanese but also completely lost appetite for the male female relationship. THE HANDMAIDEN took place in the 30s, but actually this was an almost fictional, half real story space. Aside from the aforementioned detail of "new" and old "dirty books" all becoming rare books, the swindler said to the niece, "As soon as we get on the boat to Vladivostok then take the train over several thousand miles we could live in a real Russian noble mansion." If he was not just paying lip service, one could only feel that the writer and the director put the film into a parallel universe. In our world, the 30s Russia probably would not have any noble manor, only collective farms, factories or labor camps. Perhaps this explained why he would be at the mercy of the niece. On the other hand, the niece and the handmaiden chose to go to Shanghai. It was a place that various people around the world liked to go at the end, whether you were Japanese ronin or Korean patriots. - HUNG KWONG 3. TA KUNG PAO, JUNE 30 2016, LIGHT SHADOW PATH MAKING A MOVIE REQUIRES REAL DETERMINATION Many people have a lot of "determination" when they join the film industry. Once "determined" they should take action, which probably would be right. Once, a certain company's technology and network department chief recommended a colleague with a MBA degree to the film department because that colleague said that she would gladly do anything with film. Everyone hoped that she would slowly make something of herself. That colleague on the first day of work at the film department worked in proofreading, as she checked the dialogue in the script with the film's subtitles from the beginning to the end to see if there was any mishap. On the second day, she had nothing to do in the morning. In the afternoon her superior asked her to take the rough cut DVD to the post production company, she spent two hours round trip. After the task was finished, she could not help herself any longer and "met" with her superior. Her superior asked her what happened. She said, "I am already in my second day at work, the first day my job was proofreading. This job wasn't hard, a secondary school education would be able to handle it. Today's job is package delivery, even an elementary school student can do it. Have you considered that I have a MBA?" Her superior was surprised but still said, "Supposedly as long as the jobs are related to film, you would gladly do them. So I am giving you a chance to learn." The MBA rolled her eyes and remained silent. Her superior continued, "After over half a day of proofreading, did you notice how many words maximum each shot has?" MBA of course did not notice. "Each shot could not exceed eleven words. When a shot had more, we would need to pay attention to see if the syntax could be simplified. If it was complicated then it would not be suitable, because people's eyes wouldn't be fast enough, you know? Each job has something to learn, you should take a learning approach." MBA after hearing was a little upset. She said, "Fine! The first day of work was still meaningful, but what about today? I have a MBA, but I have to deliver a package......" Her superior said, "This question's answer has to do with your specialty. As a MBA, you should know about cost effectiveness. Today only the two of us are left in the company, every second counts in film. DVD needed to be delivered as soon as possible to the post production company. If you couldn't deliver it then I would have to, in terms of hourly wage yours isn't as high as mine. The cost is higher. So I could only send you. As a MBA, I thought you would understand......" That MBA soon resigned. Her "determination" would not withstand the test. Actually she was only one of many friends who yearned for the colorful film industry. Some friends who performed decently in their own business would often say to me, "I want to make movies, but I have to have X thousand monthly to live on." This request was understandable, but these friends would be new comers to the film industry, how could they have guaranteed income? Some friends even wanted to be assistant directors but did not want to work overnight. Those comments were self contradicting as everyone knew that the film industry did not differentiate between night and day. Friends without real determination truly would not be suitable to speak light about switching job to film. - TIN LIK [ In Production Now/Soon ] COLOUR OF THE GAME Can : Hak Bak Mai Gung Lit : Black and White Maze d. Co-presented with Subway Cinema as a part of the 15th New York Asian Film Festival (NYAFF), the inaugural Korean Movie Night New York – Master Series will focus on Director/Producer Lee Joon-ik, a master of Korean historical drama. The program will consist of 6 of Director Lee’s most representative films, with the screenings held June 28 - July 2 at Walter Reade Theater (165 West 65th St.) and SVA Beatrice Theater (333 West 23rd St.). In the past two decades, he has produced, directed, and even appeared in over 20 films, many of which have played key roles in shaping the Korean cinescape. More than any other Korean filmmaker, Lee Joon-ik has focused on telling the stories about the Korean society and its traditions though the format of historical dramas, often with razor-sharp satire and elements of black comedy, skillfully creating fictional stories around historical characters, and also reflecting on Korea’s contemporary politics. While historical drama is one of the staples of Korean cinema, director Lee has been responsible for the genre’s now decade long resurgence with his 2005 hit King And The Clown. Having established himself as a leading master of the genre, he has continued to make historic dramas as his preferred mode of communicating with the audience, innovatively utilizing his art to allow Korean history and culture to be better understood by a growing international audience, and also to generations of young Koreans. About Korean Movie Night New York Korean Movie Night New York (KMN) is redesigned as "Korean Movie Night New York: Premiere Showcase" and “Korean Movie Night New York: Master Series” in 2016. KMN was launched in 2010 as a successor to Korean Cine Forum, an earlier film screening series that was organized by the Korean Cultural Service in 1996.
