When his original intention of making the film was mentioned, Le Min-Ho only gave a shy smile among fan cheers. Speaking of working with co-stars Wallace Chung Han Leung, Tang Yan and others, Lee Min-Ho revealed that at first he did not communicate much due to the language problem, but in order to display a smooth performance and hope to try to personally speak Chinese, he often asked Chung Han Leung for Putonghua help on the set. His Chinese also greatly improved. In the film Lee Min-Ho and Chung Han Leung played close brothers. Off screen gaining a brother like relationship, Lee Min-Ho evcen stated that in the film played a smart person who would often have some minor conditions. Wai Ying Hung said that her HAPPINESS character was very challenging for her despite her years in film. "I have never played a 60 year old senior on the silver screen. To me it is a new attempt. However the character has odd temperament and makes an interesting contrast with co-star (Carlos) Chan Ka Lok. The film HEARTFALL ARISES (GAING SUM POR)'s actors Sean Lau Ching Wan, Mainland artist Tong Liya, Shaun Tam Chun Yin and director Ken Wu Pinru also took to the red carpet. * (2016/06/25) Artist Kabby Hui Nga Ting in the film KIDNAP DING DING DON tried comedy for the first time. He admitted that this would be the first summer that he would have 5 releases, in the future he will be busy with promotions as well as working on Benny Chan Muk Sing's MAL SING YUN. He said listlessly, "Under the sweltering heat I had to shoot in a ball park out in the open. A worker got heat stroke. I didn't but I was drenching in sweat. It was exhausting." Was he worried that his films would drag each other's box office down? Goo Jai joked, "I hope it drags down the Olympics, don't watch the Olympics. I would also tell friends to drag down their pants in support and watch every one." * (2016/06/24) The Stanley Kwan Kam Peng produced, Lin Yu-Hsien directed, Lee Joon-Gi, Zhou Dongyu starred and Ethan Juan (Yuen King Tin) guest starred film BEGIN AGAIN earlier was invited to participate in the Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival in Korea and also qualified for the Asian Film Jury Prize competition. This time was Korean start Lee Joon-Gi's first return to the silver screen after his military service and also his first Chinese film. * (2016/06/24) Alex Fong Lik Sun, Ivana Wong Yuen Chi, Emily Kwan Bo Wai, Shek Sau, Angela Tong Ying Ying and Shirley Yeung Szeki two nights ago attended the film KIDNAP DING DING DON premiere in Causeway Bay. Kwan Bo Wai looked much thinner. She said that because at the end of last year she had an uterine fibroid removal operation and her father's passing earlier, she was much thinner. She also pointed out that during the shoot she ran into something supernatural, as her own slippers turned into children's shoes. Since that day she started to bring her own charm water to work. Ivana said that she personally witnessed the event and felt it would be very hard to explain. Siu Fong joked, "Maybe she has bad luck, we have good luck so we didn't run into anything strange like that." * (2016/06/23) The Louis Koo Tin Lok starred, Benny Chan Muk Sing directed CALL OF HEROES (NGAI SING) will open in mid August. Goo Jai played a marshal who enjoyed killing. Sean Lau Ching Wan who rarely worked on action fils this time played a village security team captain and had to constantly fight with his whip. His character was very different from village security Liu Kai Chi. Uncle Chi when faced with the Wu Jing led rescue troop felt "There is no competition, we can't compete". Ching Wan replied, "We have to face them first, we can't back down." * (2016/06/23) Film star Aaron Kwok Fu Sing and Tony Leung Ka Fai earlier appeared on the Cable program Film Montage to promote new film COLD WAR 2 (HONG JIN 2). Speaking of Chow Yun Fat's addition, Ka Fai said, "I have worked with Fat Gor since training class. I heard that he offered his services on his own. We must have made the first film too well and he thought it would be fun!" Would he like all of them to be nominated for Best Actor with the film? He said, "Fat Gor said that he wanted to be nominated for 'Supporting Actor' more, because he hasn't never won it." Sing Sing earlier shot a tunnel gun fight with Eddie Peng Yu-Yan and Tony Yang. Shooting it on his first day of work, Peng Yu-Yan was rather excited like a big kid; Sing Sing had to get hit with tear gas and joked that he had to gather his emotions for a "crying scene"! * (2016/06/23) The film LINE WALKER (SI TOH HUNG JEH) earlier revealed a series of character costume stills. The theme was "undercover is deep like the sea". In the photo everyone was in danger and displayed the cruel reality of being undercover. However not to much about the film was revealed. Louis Koo Tin Lok and Nick Cheung Ka Fai were like brothers but suspected the other to be undercover. They would even perform a blood bath on the streets. On and off screen they were as close as siblings so on camera the spark of course was exciting. Francis Ng Chun Yu seemed to be an outsider. Because he played a very dutiful but cool CIB, he of course had danger but had a gentleman feel like James Bond. He would glance past all the danger. In one scene Cheung Ka Fai pointed a gun at Goo Jai's head because he suspected Goo Jai to be undercover. He could only find out the truth. Goo Jai said that this scene was a piece of cake. When Ka Fai pointed a gun at his head he had no actual fear at all. Thus his acting was tested. Because in the film he had to look nervous but at the same time remained cool, he truly went from the outside in and back out again. Ka Fai said that pointing a gun at Goo Jai's head of course was fun, but he worried that it would misfire. The team's protective procedures were done to their fullest so he was only concerned for a second. * (2016/06/23) Sammi Cheng Sau Man two nights ago with husband Andy Hui Chi On attended an event. Johnnie To Kei Fung and Jonathan Wong Tsz Hin invited Sammi to perform LIFELONG BEAUTY on the spot but still gave a high quality performance. To Sir asked her husband Hui Chi On to perform MY WAY and LOVER. To Sir could not have enjoyed the songs more. * (2016/06/23) The Pegasus Motion Picture release, the Raymond Wong Pak Ming produced, Terra Shin directed, Lee Min-Ho, Wallace Chung Han Leung, Tiffany Tang Yan, Karena Ng Chin Yu, Jeremy Jones (Tsui Chi Hei) and Louis Fan Siu Wong starred BOUNTY HUNTERS (SEUNG GUM LIP YUN) will open on July 28th. Yesterday the film held a Beijing premiere press conference. The cast and one of the film theme song RUN's performer Chen Fanyu appeared. Yesterday was Lee Min-Ho's birthday. The team as well as Lee Min-Ho's junior colleague Kim Yoo-Mi celebrated. Lee Min-Ho thanked everyone for their well wishes and even said, "I don't thought that my birthday would be on the BOUNTY HUNTERS premiere." Then he picked up a knife and boldly stabbed the cake, much like his brave and smart bounty hunter image in the film. Yesterday's press conference added in beach and pool summer elements, thus the games the actors played were full of summer fun. Lee Min-Ho appeared to be very close with Chung Han Leung, thus they gave each other plaques to commend each other for playing pranks on and protecting each other. They also chose surfboard and lei as props and made funny poses like a Hawaiian girl. The event also showed BOUNTY HUNTER's final trailer. Lee Min-Ho personally performed any stunt scenes. "This was my first wire work in my film career, luckily this time I didn't have to fight Fan SIu Wong. Otherwise I would have worried myself to death!" Lee Min-Ho truly admired Fan Siu Wong's martial art background. While playing action games he kept pulling Fan Siu Wong next to him so he would not have to lose. Tang Yan and Ng Chin Yu disguised themselves as a queen and an angel. Tang Yan revealed that she had close relationships with the guys in the film and was able to have them eating right out of her hand. Thus everyone dubbed her the "Queen" among bounty hungers. Chin Yu was like an angel on and off screen so both under director Terra Shin's leadership put on a crown, scepter, ribbon and feathered wings. [ BLAH OF THE WEEK ] Columns, Reviews, Interviews 1. TA KUNG PAO, JUNE 24 2016, ONE WEEK IN FILM AND TELEVISION FINDINGDORY REARRANGES U.S. BOX OFFICE RECORD Last week the most explosive film industry news was the FINDING DORY U.S. release, which made a made US$ 135.06 million and broke all animated film opening weekend box office record. 13 years ago FINDING NEMO made US$ 380.84 million and was quite a success. TA KUNG PAO, JUNE 23 2016, ASIAN FILMS THE LAST RACE: EPIC VARIATION Decades ago, Hong Kong films had its shares of examples of finding story inspirations from European and American films. From Hitchcock to Luc Besson, foreign directors of different eras would have films that Hong Kong filmmakers have remade. Occasionally, the Hong Kong company made THE MIGHTY PEKING MAN to confront a foreign filmmaker (another Hong Kong company invested) KING KONG. Today, the film information around the world moved fast, the aforementioned film exchange format has declined. However it did not mean that Hong Kong filmmakers and European and American film connections have ended. The Stephen Shin Kei Yin directed new film THE LAST RACE could be said as another way of film culture exchange. - HUNG KWONG THE LAST RACE was about the second half of the legendary Scottish runner Eric Henry Liddell's life, a continuation of the Oscar winning film CHARIOTS OF FIRE (1981). In the film Liddell after winning the 400 meter gold medal at the Paris Olympics returned to his birth place, Tianjin, China to continue his father's life as a missionary. During World War II, Liddell was with other Northern Chinese Alliance members and locked away in the Shandong concentration camp by the Japanese military. Lidell's difficult days displayed high level of the glorious human spirit, helping others overcome difficulties and even gave up his war prisoner exchange chance to return home. He finally passed away from illness in the concentration camp. The entire story had Chinese and foreign relationship, great era background, life and death, world war, completely in the format of an epic film. However, when the epic story fell into a Hong Kong filmmaker's hand, it often would not be as expected. Great Era Story Perhaps the film had too many details that it wanted to explain, from Lidell's return to China, teaching at a new Tianjin school, meeting his wife, starting his family, his interaction with the Chinese and the Japanese, as well his friendship with the rickshaw puller Xu Niu, the story span 20 years. Some of the story was based on history and some the screen writers came up with. Some of the created plots were rather interesting, which more or less reflected the screen writer's imagination of that era. First, what kind of students wre at Lidell's school? In one scene the school took in a large influx of Chinese refugees. Then the lead taught them and said that he was finally able to fulfill his wish of teaching Chinese students in China. Earlier in a scene a Japanese air raid disrupted his class, most of his students were foreign students and set up for a later scene. Yet according to history, Lidell's school had mostly Chinese students. Many Northern Chinese upper class sent their children to this school. Its famous alumni included scholars and scientists like Yang Xianyi, Huang Zuolin and Luke Yuan Chia-Liu (they started at this school in the same year as Lidell). Lidell probably taught Chinese students from the start, instead he would have less chance to see European students. Secondly, the concentration camp commander ordered Lidell to race. The film did not say whether this commander had any athletic competition background, but he was enthusiastic about challenging a former Olympic champion. Obviously it was to create dramatic effects. This point might very likely be under the influence of the Japanese invasion military commander's challenge to Chinese fighters in IP MAN. Only, running was different from fighting. The forced transplant of the story seemed neither fish nor fowl. If the concentration camp had a world weightlifting champion, would that commander try to compete with him and knock the Westerner down a few pegs? Mysterious Rickshaw Puller Thirdly the most interesting was the rickshaw puller Xu Niu who was friendly with Lidell. This young man was able to speak fluent English and probably could read and write in it (the character would look for English newspaper clippings of Lidell's Olympic championship for him), why would he become a rickshaw puller? In the film his family background was very different from the Early Republic labor force that we knew. Where did he learn English from? This point was just as mysterious as why he was able to start a car repair business later. Perhaps the appearance of such a character was only for the convenience of product placement. Indeed, an antique watch in the film changed hands between Lidell and Xu Niu several times. The timing and location were completely hard to comprehend. At the beginning of the film, a watch brand logo appeared sooner than the release company. This film felt like a certain product commercial. Although film financing was not easy to raise and product placement was understandable, was it truly suitable to package the biographical film of a legendary figure who was friendly to the Chinese people, whose tomb was next to famous people like Norman Bethune and others? 3. TA KUNG PAO, JUNE 23 2016, LIGHT SHADOW PATH YOUNG PEOPLE'S QUESTIONS ABOUT FILM Young people are full of fantasy about the film industry. They have a lot of questions. The most frequently seen is how to know what the audience likes? In recent years another question of "how would the rapid development of computer special effects affect the film industry?" arose. Then they would ask how to start creating? What to write a story? They are all good questions, although the order of them seemed to be reversed. This year at the Shanghai Film Festival, director Ang Lee's forum answered the first two questions. Ang Lee said that he hoped young filmmakers would not be in too much of a hurry, not to be too frustrated, not to "grow too fast" because growth needs nurturing. Director Lee felt that the most important part of making a movie was sincerity. The story itself was not the goal, which was what you wanted to say behind it and "how to touch the audience". "No matter what many hundreds of millions of viewers you face, the most important is facing yourself". As for computer special effects, he said that "technology services art". Simple and accurate, film content was more important than special effects. Their relationship was that of primary and secondary. The film idea was expressed through the story, the structure of the story would be where the work began. A young person asked when writing a story, if you had different ideas about some of the plot fro your collaborators, how would you know you should persist or accept their opinions? This question seemed abstract but often happened. The most important was whether the plot design would be able to service the story, any organic merger with the spirit of the story would be fine. Yet often people with different opinions would subjectively feel their ways were better. The way to resolve this problem would be finding an independent third party to evaluate. Usually observers would be unbiased a and an answer would be reached very quickly. An even more basic screen writer question was how to come up with film screenplay? For this question you could study director Wong Kar Wai's experience. Director Wong said that he did not a lot of research for his film subject, the process of which was endless joy. Director Wong said that he made movies perhaps because he liked to research. There were a lot of ways to research, from academic study methods to second and third hand information collection. You could even watch movies of the same theme, basically the more the better. Character personalities drove some films, while stories drove others. Which one was better? Actually that would be very hard to say, but for film story like other stories, character personality was the driving force of the story. If the story was exciting but the character personality was not continuous, it would not be a good story. Absurd movies would often be that way. The questions that young friends were the most concerned with was how a film company boss would evaluate which screenplay could be made into a movie. This question actually was too complicated because a lot of elements had to be considered. However, the most important first step was for the boss to fall in love with the screenplay so much that he or she would be reluctant to put it down or stop. Perhaps less than 1% of the screenplays would be able to attract film company bosses to read all the way through in one sitting. Thus how "intriguing" the screenplay was was rather important. - TIN LIK [ In Production Now/Soon ] Z FOR ZOMBIE Can : Gum Man Da Song Si Lit : Tonight We Fight Zombies d. It seems Earth’s last hope lies in...a dork and a rice cooker? Grown up in a small fishing village, McDull has no black mask, no red underwear, not to mention superpower. McDull has such an ambition that with his great enthusiasm for science, he will one day become an inventor. Suddenly, a giant monster invades Earth and defeats the widely believed Earth hero - Superman. At this critical moment, people from all over the world are called for participation in an international robot competition to find the most powerful robot to fight the monster. With no much resource but some cheap home appliances, McDull converts a rice cooker into his world-saving robot: the Rizo. Unexpectedly, McDull’s low-tech invention enters the final competition. The news excites the whole village. Not only Mrs. Mak’s works day and night to meet the expense, but Principal and many others offer McDull with abundant support. Finally, McDull and Rizo set off for final contest. Rizo looks clumsy and its functions seem so ordinary. Nevertheless, as the competition turns fierce and ugly, Rizo’s unbelievable endurance makes it the final champion. Like this, McDull and Rizo suddenly become the hope of Earth. Whereas the monster could come again anytime, some scheme is going on among the heads of states...Will McDull and Rizo, the partners that are once ridiculed, be the world savior? Why does the monster attack Earth over and over again? [ HONG KONG MOVIE 6 ] When one can’t count on superheroes to save our planet from outerspace monsters, who do we turn to? That’s right! A pig head and a rice pot! Mcdull has no black masks or red underwear, and certainly not supernatural powers. He is just an ordinary boy growing up in a fishing village and dreaming of growing up to become an inventor. One day, an outerspace monster invades the Earth and makes mincemeat of the superhero sent to meet him. So world leaders call on all citizens to design a super robot, to defeat the outerspace monster and save the Earth. Mcdull, who is scant of resources but plenty resourceful, starts fiddling with his mom’s household appliances. From a humble rice cooker, he designs a low-tech high-power robot: Risopot, and makes it to the final of the World Robot Design Competition. The whole fishing village is jubilant. To produce Risopot, everybody chips in, including the principal of the village school. And Mrs. Mak, Mcdull’s mom and the village fishball maker, works triple hard to meet the expenses. Risopot looks dumb and his functions are a joke. But with extraordinary tenacity and lots of dumb luck, he emerges the winner. Now the responsibility of saving the Earth falls squarely on the shoulders of Mcdull and Risopot. The outerspace monster will be upon the Earth again any time soon. The world leaders are having summit meetings and seem to be up to something. The pig head and rice pot combo, still a laughing stock, can they really save our planet? And the outerspace monster, why does he time and again invade the Earth? CHIBI MARUKO-CHAN: THE BOY FROM ITALY d. Akane Kazuki Japanese Animation Rating : I Length : 94 mins. Co-presented with Subway Cinema as a part of the 15th New York Asian Film Festival (NYAFF), the inaugural Korean Movie Night New York – Master Series will focus on Director/Producer Lee Joon-ik, a master of Korean historical drama. The program will consist of 6 of Director Lee’s most representative films, with the screenings held June 28 - July 2 at Walter Reade Theater (165 West 65th St.) and SVA Beatrice Theater (333 West 23rd St.). In the past two decades, he has produced, directed, and even appeared in over 20 films, many of which have played key roles in shaping the Korean cinescape. More than any other Korean filmmaker, Lee Joon-ik has focused on telling the stories about the Korean society and its traditions though the format of historical dramas, often with razor-sharp satire and elements of black comedy, skillfully creating fictional stories around historical characters, and also reflecting on Korea’s contemporary politics. While historical drama is one of the staples of Korean cinema, director Lee has been responsible for the genre’s now decade long resurgence with his 2005 hit King And The Clown. Having established himself as a leading master of the genre, he has continued to make historic dramas as his preferred mode of communicating with the audience, innovatively utilizing his art to allow Korean history and culture to be better understood by a growing international audience, and also to generations of young Koreans.
