* (2016/06/22) Louis Koo Tin Lok and Wallace Chung Han Leung yesterday 
attended the film THREE (SAM YUN HUNG)'s Beijing press conference.  They 
in the film played a cop and a robber.  At the event they wore cat and 
mouse ears respectively.  Goo Jai stated, "I don't feel like taking them 
off!"  
	Director Johnnie To Kei Fung said that the major scene was a long 
distance shot of an one take gun fight.  He refused to use special 
effect production, which truly was a big breakthrough and challenge.  
The team of almost 200 rehearsed for two full months and performed the 
life and death gun fight in narrow hospital rooms.  Goo Jai took the 
chance to complain that during the shoot Chung Han Leung injured his eyes 
with broken glass.  
	Two nights ago at the premiere the two leads, To Kei Fung and 
producer Yau Nai Hoi walked the red carpet.  A reporter asked To Kei Fung 
about Vicki Zhao Wei not resembling a doctor.  He laughed and said, "You 
don't look like a reporter either!"

* (2016/06/22) 2016 Montblanc de la Culture Arts Patronage Award 25th 
anniversary celebration took place last night.  Famous Hong Kong director 
Johnnie To Kei Fung received the 2016 Montblanc Art Sponsorship Grand 
Prize" for his years of film industry contribution; To Sir will receive 
15,000 Euro in prize money, which he donate to Fresh Wave.  Last night 
friends who came to congratulate him included Mr. and Mrs. Charles Heung 
Wa Keung, Sammi Cheng Sau Man and her husband Andy Hui Chi On, Anthony 
Wong Chau Sun and Wyman Wong Wai Man.
	To Sir revealed that his past awards have been collected at the 
Hong Kong Film Archive.  "All of my honors and awards came from the film 
industry, so they had to be collected in a commemorative place.  The award 
acceptance was already a process, the rest was history for everyone to 
see.  Ashes to ashes, dust to dust, in the end there is nothing.  As long 
as it is organized it is fine!"
	To Sir has won countless awards and has not officially counted.  
He said that he was not sure how many films he has made.  Speaking of 
donating the prize to Fresh Wave, To Sir said that he would use it on 
organizing discussion forums and focus on cultivating a director.  In 
addition, To Sir revealed that he is planning to work with Mr. Heung on 
his first science fiction film.  After Wai Ka Fai turns in his script 
they would be able to start production in October this year.
	Cheng Sau Man and husband Hui Chi On appeared in black and white 
but arrived separately.  On Jai rushed inside after posing for photos, 
leaving Sammi to be interviewed.  Sammi admitted that normally she would 
prefer to look cool, but yesterday was an important day for To Sir so she 
had to dress a little more elegantly.  She and her husband arrived one 
after another because she knew she definitely would be late.  She already 
asked her husband to wait downstairs for a long time.  Before coming they 
did not plan to match what they wore.
	To Sir revealed that all of his awards will remain in the Hong 
Kong Film Archive collection.  Sammi agreed with the idea and felt that 
joy was already experienced when the award was accepted.  She would 
remember that moment.  "I have several dozen record awards but none is 
on display.  I only have one film award."  Would she like to win more film 
awards?  She said, "This isn't my goal, if I do it would be very perfect, 
but life is full of flawed beauty!"  Her concert ticket had four tickets 
per person limit.  Did it apply to her husband On Jai too?  Sammi said 
that this question was very hard to ask, ultimately everyone got a little.  
Because this was a supply issue, it could not be resolved.  She would not 
add more shows mainly because she wanted to save her voice and energy.  
"I am very sorry about fans not being able to get tickets, as a singer I 
am not as powerful as everyone imagine.  I have no ability to make 
changes!"
	Heung Wa Keung will make a science fiction film with To Kei Fung.  
Will he guest star?  Mrs. Heung chimed in and said that her husband had 
no acting bug.  He guest starred in FROM VEGAS TO MACAU 3 (DOH SING FUNG 
WON 3) because the film made over 900 million at the box office.  Mr. 
Heung said that the new film will star his son Jacky Heung Jor, as he 
hoped for him to hone his acting abilities.
	Wong Chau Sun praised To Sir for always being a thoughtful 
person.  This time he even donated the prize to cultivate new comers.  
Chau Sun also put an effort into training new comers.  He taught classes 
and when he ran into good students he would recommend them to colleagues 
to see if they had any suitable character.  Earlier he recommended a 
female students to Director Herman Yau Lai To.  Would he consider 
becoming a manager?  Chau Sun said, "This is another science, public 
relations work is not for me.  I insult people more than I greet them, 
then they would either be hired when I told them to or not at all."  

* (2016/06/22) Hong Kong director Ho Fan passed away Sunday the 19th in a 
San Jose, California hospital at the age of 84; his family was by his 
side.  Ho Fan's family expressed deep sorrow over the loss of a loved 
one, felt incredible honor from the beloved's achievement and contribution 
to society and would continue his spirit of passion for life.  Ho Fan's 
family revealed that the funeral will be private.
	Known as the "master of a generation" in the photography world, 
Ho Fan was born in Shanghai in 1931.  For his 14th birthday he received a 
camera from his father and began his photographic journey.  In a year he 
already won his first photography award.  In 1949 he immigrated to Hong 
Kong with his family and used photos to document the 50s and 60s old 
Hong Kong streets.  They are still classic today.  Ho Fan made a name for 
himself in international photography world and won almost 300 regional 
and international awards.  His work has also been in museum collections 
around the world, including Hong Kong M+ museum, Hong Kong Cultural 
Museum, the National Library of France, the San Francisco Museum of Modern 
Art and the Melbourne Maritime Museum.  
	Ho Fan's pursuit for visual aesthetics also appeared in his film 
career.  In the 60s he was an actor for the Shaw Brothers film company and 
performed in films like LOVE WITHOUT END and THE BLUE AND BLACK.  He was 
best known for playing the JOURNEY TO THE WEST's venerable Tang Monk.  In 
1972 Ho Fan switched to directing and made 24 films like SMILE AGAIN and 
HIDDEN DESIRE, and was seen as an aesthetic erotic film and romantic film 
director.

* (2016/06/21) Chow Yun Fat went to a COLD WAR 2 (HONG JIN II) forum at 
the South China University of Technology in Guangzhou.  Over 1,000 
attended.  Yesterday the forum screened the Putonghua version of the 
film, actually the Cantonese version's post production was not yet 
completed.  Fat Gor said that students would understand the Putonghua 
version, but watching it in Cantonese in Guangzhou would be even more 
intimate.  On stage he relied in both Cantonese and Putonghua.  Fat Gor 
said that his Putonghua was rotten and he wanted to speak Cantonese.
	A student asked what was the most frequently used app on Fat Gor's 
phone?  Fat Gor said, "After I finish a call I turn off the phone, I hide 
in the hills and don't need Wi-Fi because an immortal and Wi-Fi can't 
coexist."  Now Fat Gor loves hiking and was as happy as an immortal.  A 
student asked Fat Gor for his secret of staying in shape.  He said, "Cut 
your rice intake in half, walk for half a hour in the hills everyday."  
Fat Gor paid attention to health and said that in the past he worked until 
he ruined his health.  Now he had to cleanse the garbage from his 
body.  Thus he exercised and practiced Qi Gong.

* (2016/06/21) John Woo (Ng Yu Sum)'s latest film MANHUNT (JUI BO) 
earlier officially started production Osaka.  The film company for the 
film held a "production start (wine drum beating)" traditional Japanese 
ceremony on location in Osaka's landmark Abeno Harukas.  They struck a 
wine drum with a wooden hammer for a smooth production.  Guests included 
director Ng Yu Sum, producers Gordon Chan Ka Seung and Chan Hing Ka, and 
actors who just arrived in Osaka for the production like Zhang Hanyu, 
Masaharu Fukuyama, Stephy Qi Wei, Jun Kunimura, Hiroyuki Ikeuchi, Nanami 
Sakuraba, and Japanese model TAO.  Media Asia chief Peter Lam Kin Ngok 
also flew to Japan to cheer on everyone.  
	Fukuyama said that he has already worked with Director Ng, so he 
was still confident about the action scenes even though he only had a few.  
Another lead actor Zhang Hanyu said that the shoot had been rather 
difficult.  All the running was very tough and after the shoot he did not 
want to do anything, and he still had a long time that he would have to 
keep running.  Would they hold back when they fought?  Fukuyama said that 
he did not know.  "Because it would depend on the situation.  When we 
really reach that emotion we might not be able to control ourselves and 
would naturally fight."  Zhang Hanyu said, "No matter how we fight we 
would have protection and precaution, otherwise everyone would go to the 
hospital after the shoot.  However, all the action designs were very 
realistic, the audience would definitely feel the excitement."
	Two other Japanese actors Jun Kunimura and Hiroyuki Ikeuchi also 
attended.  This time in the film they played father and son.  Hiroyuki 
Ikeuchi respected elder Jun Kunimura very much, but in the film Jun 
Kunimura would have some struggle with him.  Even though in the film Jun 
Kunimura really loved his son, he did not agree with certain things about 
his son and was very worried about him.
	The selection of Osaka as the MANHUNT production location was very 
important to Osaka officials.  Aside from an independent press 
conference in Japan for the film earlier, the Osaka prefercture governor 
Ichiro Matsui and Osaka mayor Hirofumi Yoshimura took time to participate 
on the day of the ceremony.  Kintetsu Corporation Abeno Harukas' chief 
Kensuke Nakanishi, who has strongly supported the production on 
locations, also attended.  After the director, the actors and guests 
conducted the wine drum beating ceremony, everyone immediately raised 
their sake for a toast.
	Director Ng Yu Sum thanked the Osaka Prefecture governor Ichiro 
Matsui and Osaka mayor Hirofumi Yoshimura's strong support.  "I am very 
happy to be able to shoot in Osaka, many places made exceptions with 
road blocks for us to shoot at.  Anything we needed assistance with we 
received.  I hope to be able to capture the scenery of Osaka."

* (2016/06/21) The film THREE (SAM YUN HUNG) two days ago held a forum 
with Johnnie TO Kei Fung at the Beijing University.  Speaking of rumors 
that his productions had no script, To Kei Fung blamed it on "old habits 
are very hard to break" and stated that "This is the way that enables me 
to make movies freely and happily".  As for "throwing a tantrum on the 
set when in a bad mood", To Kei Fung said that mostly because workers 
were unprofessional.  As a film worker no one can make low level 
mistakes.

* (2016/06/21) The youth school film OUR DAYS (NGOR MOON DIK 6E) 
yesterday started production.  Director Checkley Sin Kwok Lam and actors 
Eric Suen Yiu Wai, Huang Yi, Angie Cheong Wei Yee, Vincent Wan Yeung Ming 
and new comers Lemon Yip Chi Yu and Brian Yuen Chung Yeung attended the 
worship ceremony.
	Huang Yi in the film played a step mother.  On this trip she 
will stay in Hong Kong for two to three days of production.  She pointed 
out that earlier she worked with Master Sin Kwok Lam on THE WOMAN KNIGHT 
OF MIRROR LAKE she was permitted to try playing a heroine.  Thus this 
time she came to support him for free.  In addition it was a charity 
film and she constantly did charity work.  She hoped that even more 
people would participate in good deeds like this.  Later Huang Yi will 
return to the Mainland for several reality shows and lectures.  She was 
busy with work but still able to return home to see her daughter.  Would 
she perform a reality show with her daughter?  She said, "No, she has to 
go to school.  Now she is on vacation, when I have time I will take her 
on holiday.  We went to Australia, Japan, Thailand and India, I hope to 
take her to see the world.  Girls have to have vision in order to be more 
magnanimous and happier!"
	She was rumored to be married for a third time.  Huang Yi 
responded, "Even I was surprised, I didn't know myself.  Actually I 
attended the wedding of a very respected sister's son.  I only stood on 
the side for a photo.  Marriage is positive energy, but because of the 
messed up reporting I am really sorry to have caused others any 
unnecessary disturbance!"  Would she wed again when she finds someone 
suitable?  She said, "Now I just started a business with behind the 
scene investing, I also want to take my daughter and my parents to more 
places.  A girl needs her mother when she is growing up, so everyday I 
don't have enough time to spend."  Was she upset that her former 
husband still talked about her?  Huang Yi said, "It ended, I wish the 
rest of our lives would be even better for both of us!"
	Suen Yiu Wai in the film was in charge of a class of less than 
ideal students.  He said that although he got good grades in school, he 
often fought in school and got a beating from his father at home.  However 
he became good friends with a teacher who loved red leather jackets and 
long hair.  They not only played in a band together but also went to a 
night club on Ladies' Night.  Her philosophy was to play in moderation, 
which he could really relate to.  Suen Yiu Wai said that lately he started 
to move his work base back to Hong Kong.  Both his business and show 
business careers will focus on Hong Kong development.  Was he intended on 
getting married?  He said, "No matter what, the old lady has to follow 
me.  Otherwise I don't get to wed.  Actually I feel Hong Kong is a bit 
sluggish.  I want to do something to prove that Hong Kong people are 
amazing!"

* (2016/06/19) Wong Jing has always wanted to remake TO BE NUMBER ONE (BAI 
HO), his original idea was to pair Nick Cheung Ka Fai with Andy Lau Tak 
Wa, with Ka Fai in the role of Cripple Ho while Lau Tak Wa played 
Inspector Lui Lok.  Later because Ka Fai was not pleased with the script 
and finally turned it down.  Later Wong Jing approached several actors 
but could not come to any deal.  Finally Wong Jing changed the script and 
even changed the title to JUI LUNG (CHASING DRAGON).  He flew to Canada to 
ask Donnie Yen Chi Tan, who was working on xXx: THE RETURN OF XANDER CAGE 
in Toronto and finally convinced him to take the film.
	Wong Jing asked COLD WAR 2 (HONG JIN 2) director of photography 
Jason Kwan Chi Yiu to direct.  The production is planned for a September 
start.  With Chi Tan in the film, of course his abilities will not be 
wasted as many action scenes will be added.  In 1991 when Ray Lui Leung 
Wai played the role he had to gain weight.  Chi Tan would not have to.  
Reportedly he already took 30 million RMB salary and was very firm with 
the price.
	Chi Tan was asked why he would take this film.  "Shouldn't actors 
find challenges and breakthrough?  Because I have play a monkey, a rock 
singer, sing and dance, just ask the film company about the film!"

* (2016/06/19) International superstar Jackie Chan made a name for himself 
with action as he created a lot of classic action films.  Despite highly 
dangerous stunts and his age of 62, he still personally performed!  In 
recent years a "Young Fresh Meat" wave arose.  Jackie Chan who earlier 
admitted signing one of the "Young Fresh Meat" Kris Wu Yifan lamented that 
the new generation of actors were very cautious.  "If 'Young Fresh Meat' 
has to perform dangerous stunts like us, they have to completely rely on 
doubles.  They still need to train and improve!"  He pointed out that many 
actors in order to make a quick buck only went to the gym to learn a few 
stunts for action films.  He has seen a very surprising example.  "On film 
sets most of them have doubles, they truly are too lazy!  A young actor 
injured his hand during a kung fu scene, he immediately screamed and cried 
for heaven and earth.  Finally the entire team of over 800 people came to 
see how he was!"
	Earlier Jackie Chan went to Le Mans, France to attend the 48th 
24 Hours Le Mans relay race with his team Jackie Chan DC Racing.  It was 
the only Chinese team to participate.  He cheered on the team members and 
participated in a team tour.  Later Jackie Chan and Mainland director Feng 
Xiaogang visited the racing museum and when meeting with the mayor he even 
received a cultural ambassador badge.

* (2016/06/19) Alex Fong Lik Sun and Kabby Hui Nga Ting starred in the new 
film KIDNAP DING DING DON (BONG GA DING DING DONG).  He had daring scenes 
in which he took off his shirt to show off his muscles and she had a sexy 
dance.  Did he feel director Wilson Chin Kwok Wai was playing a prank on 
him?  Siu Fong said that for the film nothing was too much to ask!  When 
asked did he heart pound when Hui Nga Ting performed a sexy scene?  Siu 
Fong revealed, "When I was working Wilson was dancing for me!"  Chin Kwok 
Wai joked, "He's a great actor, he was able to think of Kabby when he 
watched me dance!"  Kabby stated that she regretted not visiting the set 
and was unable to personally catch a glimpse of Siu Fong's buff body.
	Speaking of lead actress Ivana Wong Yuen Chi during the shoot was 
still not "Mrs. So" yet, Chin Kwok Wai said, "This film was made after I 
got married.  After it was done she got married.  We even joked that for 
its release would Siu Fong be the one to get married, but......"  Siu 
Fong who earlier parted ways with Stephy Tang Lai Yun said, "Maybe then I 
will really get married!  (A metaphysics expert said you two will get back 
together next year!)  No comment, last time a tarot card expert said that 
we wouldn't!"

* (2016/06/18) Hong Kong Film Award president Derek Yee Tung Sing earlier 
was the Shanghai International Film Festival "Asian New Talent Award" 
jury president.  Two nights ago Siu Bo left messages on Weibo and Weibo 
friend circle and said that lately people who endlessly asked about the 
results upset him.  "These few days people kept asking me to see if 
certain films would win awards!  Do you disrespect this ward or is afraid 
to lose and dare not to come?  Do you want to come or not!  Because of 
your calls to attempt to put in a good word or snoop triggered my bottom 
line, I have decided to stop working with your company immediately."  Siu 
Bo even told the person not to bother him again, otherwise at last night's 
award ceremony he would reveal his name.  Last night he attended the award 
presentation.  Best Actor went to Mainland artist Qin Yong and Best 
Actress went to Mainland artist Leslie Sun Yi.

* (2016/06/17) Jackie Chan Action Movie Week Night took place last night 
at the Shanghai Film Festival.  The event presented 8 awards like Best 
Action Movie Award, Best Action Director, Actor and Actress.  
	Jackie Chan said, "Many people asked me why I would organize this 
movie week?  It's not worth the hassle of money and time to call people to 
beg them to attend!  This movie week hopes everyone would watch action 
movies and pay more attention to action filmmakers, hopefully Chinese film 
will have even greater development in the world.  This movie week doesn't 
belong to me, but to everyone!"  When Best Action Actor went to Owen 
Wilson, Jackie Chan called him and woke him up.  Owen said, "What?  Are 
you kidding?  I wish I was in Shanghai with everyone!"
	Best Action Actress went to Zhang Jingchu, who kept her lips 
sealed about her love life.  Did she call her boyfriend to give him the 
good news?  She said, "You are so bad!  You are trying to get me to talk!  
Kung fu movies are very tiring, Jackie Chan never thought I could do it 
and told me to make art house films!"  Eric Tsang Chi Wai and Kim Hee-Sun 
presented Best Fight Scene.  Chi Wai greeted everyone in Kim Hee-Sun's 
"girly" Putonghua voice.  The award went to Best Action Movie IP MAN 3.  
Raymond Wong Pak Ming and fresh out of the oven Best Action Director 
Wilson Yip Wai Shun accepted it on Yuen Woo Ping's behalf.  Jackie Chan 
said that he was pleased with the results and called in all the favors to 
invite guests to attend.  He even personally invited Kim Hee-Sun.  When 
asked about Tao suddenly breaking down in an interview, Jackie Chan pushed 
away the microphone immediately.

* (2016/06/17) The Benny Chan Muk Sing directed, Sammo Hung Kam Bo action 
directed wuxia epic CALL OF HEROES (NGAI SING) yesterday held a Beijing 
press conference to announce its August 18th release.  Sean Lau Ching Wan, 
Louis Koo Tin Lok, Eddie Peng Yu-Yan, Yolanda Yuan Quan, Jiang Shuying 
and others appeared.  Goo Jai even revealed that Eddie was "chatty", as 
soon as he started talking he could not stop.  During the interview Goo 
Jai reminded him, "Try to talk a little less."
	Chan Muk Sing said that he waited for Big Brother Big Hung Kam 
Bo's schedule for a very long time. This time he had the chance to work 
with him and felt very fortunate.  Speaking of the action scenes, Hung Kam 
Bo said, "I don't have any secret, I am just lucky.  They are able to 
fight like I want, that's my as well as everyone's luck to be able to see 
fight scenes that have never been performed fought well.
	Ching Wan, Goo Jai repeatedly broke through their personal limits 
in the film, in particular Ching Wan returned to action after 20 years.  
Goo Jai revealed that in the film he would transform into the villain big 
boss in the film, so bad that even he himself stated "this is the worst 
Goo Jai".  Speaking of their relationship in the film, Ching wan and Goo 
Jai both said that this was the first time they were on opposite sides 
in all the years of working together.  As soon as they saw each other they 
had to fight.  Eddie revealed that in the film he played a bearded 
wanderer, a character that was both capable in both action and art.  He 
said that since playing Wong Fei Hung his action scenes got more and more 
brutal.  In CALL OF HEROES he even had a fight scene that took 53 takes.
	At the press conference, Ching Wan and Goo Jai made fun of their 
"junior".  Ching Wan first said that Eddie was a lone ranger like he was 
in the film, as he seemed like he was never a part of the team.  Goo Jai 
revealed that Eddie was "chatty".  He said, "I was afraid to chat with 
him, as soon as he started he was nonstop.  After half a hour of interview 
he only answered his first question."
	Eddie replied, "I was afraid of the two older brothers.  Because 
they were busy, had a lot of scenes and a lot to say, when I got to speak 
I of course talked more.  Just now Big Brother Koo Tin Lok said, 'Try to 
talk a little less, this topic is almost done'.  Of course I would still 
say a little more at the press conference and share the film experience 
with everyone."  He also said that he would be afraid of working with the 
two elders so he tried to come up with ways to attract their interest.  "I 
usually would tell myself that they haven't paid too much attention to me.

	Yuan Quan said that she gave the first fight scene of her career 
in CALL OF HEROES.  She revealed that in the film she played Ching Wan's 
wife.  Although in the film she would revolve around her husband and their 
daughter, she was not the traditional gentle wife.  She was capable of 
handling defending the nation as well as helping her husband with fending 
off enemies.

* (2016/06/17) Lee Min-Ho performed the film BOUNTY HUNTER's theme song 
with the original performer, the Mainland group Yu Quan, as Yu Quan's 
classic song RUN was arranged anew and turned into an all new version.  
Lee Min-Ho performed the Korean version while Yu Quan performed the 
Chinese version.  Both languages merged.  Lead Lee Min-Ho liked this new 
version of RUN very much and said, "This song feels very young and is full 
of positive energy.  In addition it matches the film's bounty hunters 
daring to travel all over Asia.  Thus during the recording I felt full of 
energy as well."

* (2016/06/17) Stephy Tang Lai Yun, Wilfred Lau Ho Lung and the Sun 
Entertainment Group boss Alvin Chau Cheok Wa yesterday attended a travel 
exhibit to introduce the group's future tourism direction.  
	Stephy revealed that lately she has been working with Gaile Lok 
and Chrissie Chau Sau Na on the action film HUSBAND KILLERS (NUI JI FOOK 
SAU).  She just finished an all night fight scenes and felt very tired.  
Because the film just started production, for now she has not been hurt.  
She said, "In the film I am the best fighter, but in real life I have 
never fought.  Earlier we just shot a brawl between the three of us.  I 
already told them not to hit me in the face.  (what about the chest?)  
Then I am the most disadvantaged, ha ha, actually I have more gun fights 
then physical contact.  The director would keep an eye on us."
	Speaking of his old flame Alex Fong Lik Sun constantly visiting 
her neighbor Louis Cheung Kai Chung in name to visit her.  Actually the 
three of them left in the same complex.  Stephy had no idea.  "No, we 
haven't seen each other.  He didn't visit me, not even a text.  (Are you

* (2016/06/16) Gigi Leung Wing Kei two nights ago attended the Filmko 
Night in Shanghai to announce officially that she will be joining Filmko.  
She revealed that in the future she will make many movies and perform her 
20th anniversary concert tour.  Boss Alex Wong Hoi Fung said, "I have 
known Gigi for years, I really appreciate her film and music.  She is a 
very talented all purpose artist.  I hope to be able to demonstrate all 
of Gigi's artistic cells."  Gigi also said, "The boss has always been 
very supportive of me.  They gave me a lot of freedom and respect my 
family life.  They assist me in finding a balance between work and 
family.  At the end of the year I will begin my concert tour and share 
our 20 years with fans.  Then I will perform in several of the company's 
films and challenge different characters."
	In Filmko's 2016 and 2017 film list was THE MONKEY KING 3 (SAI 
YAU GEI: NUI YI GOK), the over US$ 100 million science fiction production 
APOCALYPSE EXPLOSION, the internet novel based THE FIRST INTIMATE 
CONTACT, EIGHT IMMORTALS, and ZHENGTU. Director Soi Cheang Po Shui 
revealed that THE MONKEY KING 3 special effects will exceed THE MONKEY 
KING 2.  The film will select 1,200 beauties to play the citizens of 
the nation of women.

* (2016/06/16) The film COLD WAR 2 (HONG JIN 2) not only had a greater 
cast than the first film but also a much larger production scale.  A 
"prisoner escort" scene was shot at the Sai Ying Pun MTR station.  
Shooting a movie in any public place in Hong Kong required application, 
inspection and approval.  MTR's use rate was too high and could not be 
randomly loaned out to productions.  Luckily the film production team 
was finally able to get the Sai Ying Pun station for the shoot.
	Every second counted in this MTR shoot.  The team could only 
bring in the equipment after 2AM and had to shoot until 5Am then leave.  
The scene needed around 200 to 300 extras so before the official shoot 
the team rented a stadium for rehearsal, so the shoot would be even 
smoother.  In the scene Aaron Kwok Fu Sing escorted Eddie Peng Yu-Yan in 
the crowded MTR station with a bomb in a suitcase.  Peng Yu-Yan with 
cohort Tony Yang's assistance escape into the crowd.  Sing Sing had to 
run toward another direction to prevent the blast from the bomb from 
affecting the innocent.
	Because the scene involved many angle adjustments and action 
scenes, the slightest mishap from any party including extras would 
require a lot of time to shoot the scene over.  Sing Sing and Eddie Peng 
Yu-Yan thus ran many times.  Peng Yu-Yan even joked, "I will soon be out 
of breath from running."  Sing Sing also said, "Everyday around 11PM we 
start the preparation, the make up and hair, everyday we only got 4 hours 
to shoot, all the extras and main actors had to rehearse.  Thus when we 
got to the location we saved a lot of time.  Although we has already done 
a lot of preparation, when we got there we might run into some problems.  
However everyone was very serious and everyone was very focused, very 
concentrated, so although we only had limited time for a few days, we 
would be able to successfully complete the production."

1. TA KUNG PAO, JUNE 17 2016, ONE WEEK IN FILM AND TELEVISION
WARCRAFT REIGNS IN CHINA

	Summer begins in June as Hollywood blockbusters gradually open. 
Although the super production CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR has already 
opened early last month in the Mainland and Hong Kong and even made 
1,248,100,000 RMB in the Mainland to make the big film openings of the 
past few weeks pale in comparison, the new release in the Mainland last 
week, WARCRAFT: THE BEGINNING, made 1.037 billion RMB and conceivably vow 
to break CAPTAIN AMERICA's box office number by its second week.  This 
week obviously landed on top of the box office last week.  English 
director Duncan Jones directed this fantasy action film.  Its popularity 
with the Mainland audience might have to do with the film's large scale 
action scenes and super special effects.
	Yet WARCRAFT last week lost to fellow new release NOW YOU SEE ME 2 
in Hong Kong and came in second with HK$ 9.28 million, which was still a 
decent performance; NOW 2 made HK$ 13.87 million, seemingly Jay Chou (Chow 
Kit Lun)'s performance indeed had some box office draw.  Duncan Jones' 
previous film was the Jake Gyllenhaal and Michelle Monaghan starred 
science fiction film SOURCE CODE, which made HK$ 9.24 million in Hong Kong 
in a decent showing.
	Last week's Mainland box office second week was the second week 
release X-MEN: APOCALYPSE with 262 million RMB, over two weeks it made 
649 million; in third was ALICE THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS, which made 
43.7 million RMB.  Over three weeks it made 367.7 million RMB; in fourth 
place was the animation THE ANGRY BIRDS MOVIE with 36 million RMB, over 
four weeks it made 506 million RMB; in fifth place was the new release 
Mainland animation film TOYS WAR, which made 6.6 million RMB.
	Other new releases included the Mainland romantic comedy OUR 
GRADUATION, which made 1.46 million RMB in eleventh place.  It was quite 
a brutal performance.  In addition, opening last Saturday the 19th 
Shanghai International Film Festival made 2.05 million RMB over two days.

2. TA KUNG PAO, JUNE 16 2016, ASIAN FILMS
NEW YORK NEW YORK ENDS OVERSEAS DREAMS

	Stanley Kwan Kam Peng in 1989 made a film called FULL MOON IN NEW 
YORK and won eight Golden Horse Awards including Best Film.  It told a 
story of three women from three lands on both sides of the Strait in New 
York, which could be said as a drifting Chinese memoir.  Over 20 years 
later, he produced NEW YORK NEW YORK.  It again put this "Big Apple" that 
attracted immigrants from around the world on the silver screen.  The 
time was the early 90s that tightly followed the FULL MOON IN NEW YORK 
background.
	NEW YORK NEW YORK actually was a story that took place in 
Shanghai.  A foreign funded hotel manager was honorable and great at his 
job, earning the trust of his subordinates as well as Miss. Jin, who was 
handling the entertainment.  Unlike people who dreamt about going 
overseas, he was not interested in the U.S. at all due to his parents' 
experience of failure in the U.S.  Thus when a Chinese American 
businessman invited him to collaborate, he gave him the cold shoulder.  
Only in order to help his lover complete her dreams of going overseas, he 
still decided to help the businessman as he began to gather the troops 
for that soon to open "Manhattan Shanghai Grand Hotel".  In an instant, a 
variety of people who went to go overseas in the Shanghai hotel industry 
all approached him as a gateway......

Lingering Memories
	Both were both the 90s Immigration Wave, the people who looked for 
ways to go overseas in NEW YORK NEW YORK and the group of people who 
studied English in another film AMERICAN DREAMS IN CHINA were very 
different.  In the former, the small people who were in lower class and 
had limited education had to rely on methods like work visa to go to New 
York (the only person who passed the TOEFL to go to the U.S. was a lady 
of the night), or through ways like money for a chance to work overseas.  
It was very natural for them to have these ideas as they became the best 
prey for swindlers.  NEW YORK NEW YORK took its time with its story 
development, its character depictions were reserved.  In comparison to 
the superficial style of AMERICAN DREAMS IN CHINA it was drastically 
different.
	The dream of going overseas for a group of Shanghai hotel 
bellhops in NEW YORK NEW YORK was mostly just a dream.  The few who in the 
end remained in New York were still bellhops.  The only successful person 
was the girlfriend who hooked up with a mob boss.  Interestingly, Du Juan 
who played the character was also in AMERICAN DREAMS IN CHINA.  In it she 
in order to stay in the U.S. married a foreigner and ended up heading 
toward a life of tragedy.  This character was the entire film's only 
person with a tragic ending.  From this point, both films were 
reflections of the 90's Immigration Wave; one was helpless memories and 
the other was an exciting self indulgence.

Relationship Between Men
	In NEW YORK NEW YORK the narrator from the beginning to the end 
was neither the male or female protagonist, but the male lead's younger 
brother.  This more or less hinted his ending.  From his younger brother's 
mouth, the mysterious and beautiful girlfriend was a femme fatale type.  
His younger brother's own lover was also a snobbish woman who would do 
anything in order to go overseas.  Instead the male lead and a group of 
bellhop and even the businessmen had a indescribable male relationship 
that connected the entire film.
	In order to create the 90s Shanghai and New York, this film spent 
a lot of work on creating details like the early mobile phone and the 
pagers that were popular back then.  Although occasionally they had 
mishaps (like modern planes in the sky), overall it still captured a 
glimpse of life during that time.  Only the dark winter of Shanghai and 
all the night scenes along with the old buildings on the Outer Bund, the 
space and time of the city more or less gave people a impression of not 
knowing when it really was.
	On the other hand, NEW YORK NEW YORK made a deep impression with 
its sound.  The characters in the film spent 1/3 of the time speaking the 
Shanghai dialect.  Several key characters had exchanges in Putonghua and 
the Shanghai dialect.  Especially the older characters, they spoke it even 
more.  This completely met with the climate in which Shanghai shops had 
to post "Speak Putonghua" promotional slogans.  As for the girlfriend, she 
said that she was a tour guide and could speak English, Japanese and a 
little Cantonese.  She communicated with Miss Jin occasionally with her 
not so fluent Cantonese.  Miss Jin aside from Cantonese and Putonghua also 
performed a Yue Opera skit of DREAM OF RED CHAMBER with a teacher.  She 
said, "When I was young I performed Yue Opera in Hong Kong and the South 
Seas, back then I was rather popular."  The mix of southern and northern 
dialects was a rare yet realistic handling among Chinese films.

  Police Inspector Tung tracks criminal Shing to a deserted fisherfolk

  In December 1941, Japan expands the occupation of its neighbouring
  countries to Southeast Asia. The railway from Tianjin to Nanjing in East
  China became a key military transportation route, heavily guarded by
  Japanese soldiers.

  Railroad worker Ma Yuan leads a team of freedom fighters. Using his deep
  knowledge of the train network, he and his men sabotage it, ambushing
  Japanese soldiers and stealing supplies to feed the starving Chinese.

  Although the freedom fighters have no weapons of their own, they employ
  whatever tools are at hand, including shovels, loose railway track planks
  and diverted trains. The local Chinese call the unlikely heroes the
  "Railroad Tigers".

  The freedom fighters find themselves on the wrong side of the tracks when
  the Japanese send reinforcements to Shandong. In an act of defiance, Ma
  Yuan launches his most dangerous mission yet, blowing up a
  heavily-guarded railroad bridge.

  When the Japanese learn of the crippling plan, which will derail the war
  effort, the stakes are raised even higher.

	Korean Cultural Center NY, a branch of the Ministry of Culture, 
Sports and Tourism (MCST) of the Republic of Korea, is proud to announce 
a new film series to launch Korean Movie Night New York: Master Series 
– a showcase of the works of Korea’s leading filmmakers.  
	Co-presented with Subway Cinema as a part of the 15th New York 
Asian Film Festival (NYAFF), the inaugural Korean Movie Night New York 
– Master Series will focus on Director/Producer Lee Joon-ik, a master of 
Korean historical drama. The program will consist of 6 of Director Lee’s 
most representative films, with the screenings held June 28 - July 2 at 
Walter Reade Theater (165 West 65th St.) and SVA Beatrice Theater (333 
West 23rd St.). 
	In the past two decades, he has produced, directed, and even 
appeared in over 20 films, many of which have played key roles in shaping 
the Korean cinescape. More than any other Korean filmmaker, Lee Joon-ik 
has focused on telling the stories about the Korean society and its 
traditions though the format of historical dramas, often with razor-sharp 
satire and elements of black comedy, skillfully creating fictional 
stories around historical characters, and also reflecting on Korea’s 
contemporary politics. 
	While historical drama is one of the staples of Korean cinema, 
director Lee has been responsible for the genre’s now decade long 
resurgence with his 2005 hit King And The Clown. Having established 
himself as a leading master of the genre, he has continued to make 
historic dramas as his preferred mode of communicating with the audience, 
innovatively utilizing his art to allow Korean history and culture to be 
better understood by a growing international audience, and also to 
generations of young Koreans. 

About Korean Movie Night New York
	Korean Movie Night New York (KMN) is redesigned as "Korean Movie 
Night New York: Premiere Showcase" and “Korean Movie Night New York: 
Master Series” in 2016.  It was a continuing series of bi-weekly 
film screenings that introduces the full spectrum of both contemporary and 
classic Korean cinema to New York audiences, from popular blockbusters, 
independent films, and documentaries, to animation and family movies. 
KMN was launched in 2010 as a successor to Korean Cine Forum, an earlier 
film screening series that was organized by the Korean Cultural Service

	Dongju: The Portrait of a Poet is a biographical film about Korean 
poet Yun Dong-ju, set during the Japanese colonial era. Written by 
arthouse director Shin Yeon-shick, and shot entirely in black and white, 
the film follows Dong-ju and his friend Mong-kyu, as they react in 
different ways to the harsh realities of their lives.

THE THRONE 
Starring: Song Kang-ho, Yoo Ah-in

	“The film’s compassion flows audaciously in all directions, as Lee 
extends a full measure of human complexity to every figure in the tragedy, 
all of them trapped in one way or another by a rigid social order that 
regularly turned family members into enemies” – Justine Chang, Variety 
	The Throne is a tragic tale of 27-year-old Crown Prince Sado, who 
was ordered by his father, King Yeongjo, to be locked inside a wooden rice 
chest in 1762. The film was South Korea’s entry for the Best Foreign 
Language Film at the 88th Academy Awards. 

Friday, July 1 at SVA Beatrice Theatre - Historical Dramas, 6:00pm 
KING AND THE CLOWN 
2005 | 119 min | 35mm | Korean with English subtitles

	A critical and commercial hit that became the highest grossing 
Korean film of its time, King and The Clown follows the intricate web of 
desires and jealousies between Joseon Dynasty king Yonsan, his consort, 
and two male traveling performers. The film kick-started the resurgence of 
Korean historical dramas on the big screen which had traditionally been 
one of the most popular genres of Korean cinema. 

8:10pm Talk with Director Lee Joon-ik 
	The in-depth talk and Q&A session will focus on Director Lee’s 
preference for the historical drama format. 

9:10pm Blades of Blood
2010 | 111min | 35mm | Korean with English subtitles

	As the closing film of the New York Asian Film Festival 2010, and 
adapted from a popular manhwa, Blades of Blood is a sweeping 16th century 
epic of political intrigue and revenge with the legendary blind swordsman 
(portrayed by Hwang Jung-min) at the center of action.

Saturday, July 2 at SVA Beatrice Theatre - Historical Black Comedies,

ONCE UPON A TIME IN A BATTLEFIELD
2003 | 104min | Digi-Beta | Korean with English subtitles

	Lee Joon-ik’s very first foray into period comedy is a 
refreshingly postmodern twist on Korea’s ancient history, specifically on 
the 7th century conflict between the three Korean kingdoms of Baekje, 
Silla, and Goguryeo, effectively (and hilariously) serving as a metaphor 
for political regionalism of contemporary Korea.

BATTLEFIELD HEROES
2011 | 118min | DCP |Korean with English subtitles

	The sequel to Once Upon A Time in a Battlefield, and the official 
selection of New York Asian Film Festival 2011, focuses on the war between 
the southern Korean state of Silla and the larger northern Korean state of 
Goguryeo, set in 668. 

8:35 pm Talk with director Lee Joon-ik and Writer/Producer Cho Chul-hyun 
(THE THRONE, BATTLEFIELD HEROES, BLADES OF BLOOD, ONCE UPON A TIME IN A 
BATTLEFIELD). 

	Lee Joon-ik and Cho Chul-hyun have been working closely ever since 
the start of Lee Joon-ik’s earlier film career in late 90’s. The talk and 
Q&A will focus on the story development process of their films. 

Note: DONGJU: THE PORTRAIT OF A POET and THE THRONE will screen as part of 
the 15th New York Asian Film Festival (June 22 – July 9 at the Film 
Society of Lincoln Center and SVA Theatre, www.subwaycinema.com). Director
