As the Shanghai Film Festival jury member Karena Lam Ka Yun showed up in casual wear and said, "This year would have been Gor Gor (Leslie Cheung Kwok Wing)'s 60th birthday, so I came to show my support. (How does it feel to be on the jury?) I am like a student, learning and discussing with the elder jury members!" Wong Kar Wai revealed that later he will hold a retrospective in the U.S. and re-release all of his work once more. * (2016/06/15) The film SUMMER'S DESIRE yesterday held a Shanghai press conference. Producer Gigi Leung Wing Kei, director Lai Chun-Yu with stars Law Chung Him, Huang Cancan, Lawrence Wong attended. The film company invited the Hollywood team before SPIDER-MAN and other large scale special effect films and even a bubble master as guests to create a bubble kingdom full of hearts. Producer Leung Wing Kei revealed that after producing the film she will return as a singer to perform a concert at the end of the year. Leung Wing Kei yesterday said about her new job as a producer that she originally had a wide range of interest. "Singing, acting, behind the scene work, I want to try them all. I also thank the director for giving me this chance." She even joked that she has always been very gentle, and was a gentle producer. "I leave the tough guy roles to the director and producers. I cheer everyone on on the set." Speaking of her experience, Leung Wing Kei said, "My first time as a producer was a lot of fun but a lot of trouble. We hoped to make the movie like the original. Although actual locations for some very extravagant scenes were very hard to achieve, but technology was able to support us in completing all the designs and creativity. As long as everyone can see our sincerity, it is worth all the effort." At the press conference, Leung Wing Kei announced that the film will open on July 22nd. She said that she would not have a lot of pressure. "This time I don't have the on screen pressure, only off screen pressure. This is a pure romance, and a movie that relaxes people. I believe that its performance will be great so I won't have much pressure." Gigi even revealed that she will perform a concert at the end of the year. "I hope everyone would watch the movie first, then watch my concert." Guest Prince Bubble immediately made a heart shaped bubble for Leung Wing Kei. She carried this heart in the palm of her hand, meaning that the film would not disappoint the audience' young girl hearts. In the film, Law Chung Him, Huang Cancan, Lawrence Wong interpreted a romantic fairy tale that was like a dream and a fantasy. The three leads said that before their performance they did a lot of preparation. Law Chung Him said, before the shoot he already memorized the original and found some inspiration from the television series. Speaking of memories of this production, Him Him said, "I feel that I became younger and full of energy. Earlier when I worked on THE MONKEY KING 2 I had a very tough time. In comparison this time was much more relaxed." Huang Cancan went to Taiwan over a month before for performance training. She did advanced rehearsals for many major scenes in the film. She joked, "I also had to lose weight and return to be a petite young girl." She also "complained" about her many crying scenes. "At the beginning I thought real emotion was enough for crying scenes, but the director was highly demanding. He told me to only shed tear on the left eye because the left right would face the camera. This time I have already cried enough." Director Lai Chun-Yu said that this film had a lot of fantasy and fairy tale elements. In order to bring about this romantic feeling, the film was shot entirely in Taiwan. The director added that in order to bring about the romantic fantasy elements invited SPIDER-MAN's Hollywood special effect team to join the production. "Perhaps many youth films wouldn't use special effect, but for SUMMER'S DESIRE, special effect scenes would express the fairy tale like fantasy even better." * (2016/06/14) The Oxide Pang Shun directed new film MY WAR yesterday held a press conference in Shanghai. Leads Liu Ye, Tony Yang and Wang Luodan appeared. Playing brothers in the film, Tony Yang had to carry the injured Liu Ye on the run. He said that earlier a director saw his running scene and praised his performance. He said, "Because at the time the explosion was behind me, I had to get away right away. After every scene, Liu Ye and I would find a lot of scars on our bodies. After the shoot we would lean on each other to see the doctor." Liu Ye said that he looked dirty and the film had a lot of bloody scenes, he would not take his children to see it. Pang Shun admitted that after this week he would "shut down" to be with his pregnant wife Lee Sinjie. * (2016/06/14) Mainland film stars Han Geng, Wu Jing and his wife Xie Nan yesterday attended the CHINESE ODYSSEY 3 press conference in Shanghai. "Venerable Tang Monk" Wu Jing said that this time without any fight scene the production was rather easy. The funniest was when he performed Law Kar Ying's hit ONLY YOU. He said, "I always sing this song, even my wife feels helpless. Now as soon as I sing only, my son would know to sing you. It's very cute!" Instead as Princess Iron Fan Xie Nan had fight scenes. Was Wu Jing worried that his wife would get hurt? He joked, "Who would dare to injure my wife, they wouldn't live!" Han Geng stated that playing Stephen Chow Sing Chi's classic character was rather stressful. With a lot of fight scenes, he had to lose 20 pounds a month before the production. When he was practice with a staff he got hurt by accident. Luckily he also had intimate scenes. Director Jeff Lau Chun Wai told him to try to enjoy them as much as he could. * (2016/06/14) Leung Ka Yan, Vincent Wan Yeung Ming, Susan Shaw Yam Yam and "Xanadu" Ng Yo Yo starred internet movie O GWING FUNG WON yesterday started production in Macau. Leung Ka Yan's son Leung Ho Chi is the director. In the film Leung Ka Yan rescued Shaw Yam Yam from the sea and Xanadu from thugs and had a lot of stunt scenes! Xanadu who was also the organizer said that she had to keep an eye on both on and off screen performance, which was quite a challenge. "I am very happy to be able to make a comedy. Grasping the pace isn't easy, not to mention that I am working behind the scene as well. I have to help with everything, I have a lot to learn! (Any sexy performance?) I have a swimsuit scene. Earlier I had a lot for my birthday, I have to work hard to lose the weight!" * (2016/06/14) During the 19th Shanghai International Film Festival, Hong Kong film industry "Big Brother Big" Sammo Hung Kam Bo yesterday announced the opening of his own film office and said that he would actively search for new martial art stars. Jackie Chan, Eric Tsang Chi Wai, Yuen Biao, Yuen Wah and others flew to Shanghai to support him. Hung Kam Bo yesterday announced the establishment of a film office. He said, "I want to give young people a hand to seriously make movies with a bang. Although the office will be in Shanghai, it won't be limited to Shanghai. It will be global!" He chose Shanghai because the local government has been very supportive and provided him with a lot of perks. Hung Kam Bo wanted to discover new martial art stars through this. "I feel that in recent years fewer new kung fu stars have appeared. Actually the world has many martial artists who are waiting to be discovered. Now in Hong Kong no one really dreams and Hong Kong government hasn't been too supportive! Instead the Mainland still has a lot of opportunities, because many people study martial arts but kung fu films still are being overlooked. Over the years I have been making action films, I want to discover new martial artists." He also stated that he would first train Peng Yu-Yan. He praised this god son for being hard work and willing to put in the effort. As for working with Jackie Chan and Tsang Chi Wai again, Hung Kam Bo said, "For decades we have been working together countless times, when we are together to make movies we have a lot of fun." Chi Wai also supported Hung Kam Bo in making more martial art action films and continuing to spread kung fu films. Chi Wai said, "Kung fu films can really represent Hong Kong. They may not be able to make them well overseas, so it can't be lost!" * (2016/06/13) The film LEAGUE OF GODS (FUNG SUN JUEN KEI) will open in July. Koo Tin Lok and Cheung Ka Fai earlier worked on location in the Zika virus infected Brazil. Koo Tin Lok admitted that overcoming the virus fear was a huge challenge. Ka Fai joked, "I saw a lot of Brazilian girls, with huge chests!" He also joked that Brazilian beauties' rears were too big and national beauties were still the best! As for the brotherly love in the film, Koo Tin Lok said, "Brotherly love is brotherly love! It won't have any kiss scene anyway." They said that the film's selling point was who was undercover. Speaking of the Brazilian gun fight scene, Koo Tin Lok and Ka Fai admitted that real bullets rained upon them and helped with the "sound" of the film. Koo Tin Lok said, "I went to a place where even cops wouldn't go to shoot. The local security provided protection. During the shoot suddenly gun shots could be held, as people were exchanging fire. The director said someone set off firecrackers! I said don't mess around! The director said that he wanted to lie to himself. Later he told Ka Fai that the wall was filled with bullet holes. (Were you scared?) Not much to be scared off, the production was more important." Ka Fai praised the team for the arrangement. The entire production went smoothly. He also said that the Brazil scenes were key because they had a lot of action scenes. Sheh Si Man and Li Guangjie said that they were undercover. Ah Sheh said that she did not excel in fight scenes and was bruised all over. She could only ask the director to shoot her skin baring scenes before the wrap. "With car chases, explosions, gun fights, fighting, now I am a great fighter! In one scene I even had to fight with a Korean girl." In addition, Benz Hui Siu Hung's video was shown. "Brother Foon Hei isn't dead yet." * (2016/06/13) After the Emperor Motion Picture THE BULLET VANISHES (SIU SUT DIK JI DAN), Nicholas Tse Ting Fung and Sean Lau Ching Wan "reunited" after three years to work on the new film HEARTFALL ARISES (GAING TIN POR). They yesterday attended the press conference in Shanghai. Ching Wan jokingly called Ting Fung "Ting Fung Gor". When the host asked who they would blow up with a bomb, Ting Fung joked, "I would strap my manager Mani (Fok Man Hei) on the bomb." How did Ching Wan feel about working with Ting Fung three years later? He joked, "The two of us are much more mature. Aside from the production Ting Fung rarely spoke. We didn't talk about our personal lives." This time playing a criminal psychology professor, Ching Wan stated that he liked to watch killer films for "research". "I am just watching the character performance! (Did the director put you in hard labor?) I did what an actor should do. The director's instructions were very clear, only that a lot of the medical and criminal psychology stuff I didn't understand in the beginning. (Did Ting Fung cook on the set?) No! I haven't tried it. (Did you ask him to invite you to his program?) You hurry up and ask him!" Christie Chen played Ting Fung and Ching Wan's superior. For one scene she rehearsed her lines 100 times before hand, but when she took her mark she still forgot her line. Luckily both Best Actors were very patient. I know that China already has many of my supportive fans; not only in China but the entire Chinese circle's fans are full of passion and love for me, for which I have always been very appreciative. Jackie Chan, director Sam Raimi, Teddy Chan Tak Sum, Chin Kar Lok and others attended the opening forum. Jackie Chan admitted that past Hong Kong action film stunt scenes were too exaggerated. Because of excessive adjustments the script was neglected. He said that he wanted to make a movie without any fight scene. Jackie Chan at the same time revealed that some action stars did not know how to fight, he even almost named someone. Jackie Chan said that with more international film exchanges, he realized that in the past Hong Kong action films purely did stunts for the sake of stunts. Hollywood would put elements like drama and photography first in an action film. Many Hong Kong films would put action first. Many films' "action" was purely for the pursuit of excitement and would give children the wrong impression. Director Chan Tak Sum said that someone once reminded him out of good intention that as an action director if the first half of the action had no fight, would the audience leave half way. Director Chan felt that he had to make the audience fall in love with the characters with the story in the first half for the audience to truly pay attention to the character development in the fight scenes in the second half. At the forum, Jackie Chan even left his seat countless times to perform his past stunts. He said that his stunts were so exaggerated that they became too fake. Now looking back he would feel bad about them. Later he suddenly lamented that he truly hoped to be able to make a movie without any fighting at all. Speaking of the hardship of being an action star, Chin Kar Lok said that as a younger generation member he could no longer movie. However Big Brother Jackie Chan could still firmly stand guard at the action film set. Jackie Chan could not help but reveal some dark secrets behind some fight scenes. He said that with the advanced technology now stunt doubles have become popular, which made some people who did not know kung fu at all into famous action stars. Some stars only had to jump and perform some simple stunts on the set, then the double would take over. Some "famous action star" performed their stunts through technology, as stunt doubles performed all of their stunts. Finally the star's face was "changed" onto the double's body. Jackie Chan almost named the star, but finally still kept his mouth shut. Jackie Chan shook his head and said that such a lie would only harm themselves in the end. Yesterday many kung fu students came to the Jackie Chan Action Film Week Opening forum. A foreign friend said that he studied kung fu because he really admired Jackie Chan. He even asked about the progress of Jackie Chan's play. Jackie Chan said that the play was still be worked on, the idea was to based it on his autobiography and tell the story of his decades of struggle. The play will use an all new no dialog format with only narration. This way it will be able to be performed internationally in the future. * (2016/06/13) The Emperor release, Mani Fok man Hei produced romantic comedy I LOVE THAT CRAZY LITTLE THING yesterday held a Shanghai press conference. Last night he immediately returned to Shanghai to prepare for the new film press conference. He said that the Shanghai Pudong explosion did not affect him as he would fly out of Hong Kong as scheduled. With all the rain in Hong Kong and Shanghai recently, Tony Yang said that he was not worried that it would affect the fans who came to see him. Instead he said that with the higher temperature it would be cooler and more comfortable after the rain. Speaking of working with compatriot Eddie Peng Yu-Yan for the first time in COLD WAR 2, Tony Yang said that actually they have known each other for a long time. However he revealed that he will work with Liu Ye and Wang Luodan on a war film. He said, "I have worked with Liu Ye ten years ago on BLOOD BROTHERS. Law Ming Chu's friend Penny Chan Kwok Fung said that he met Chu Nui when he got into the business. No one would be in good spirit when sending her on her final journey. I told those around me to 'hold it back', hoping that she would rest in peace." Was Lee Lai Chun very heartbroken? The film S STORM (S FUNG BO) starred Louis Koo Tin Lok, Vic Chou Yu Man, Julian Cheung Chi Lam and Ada Choi Siu Fun. This year the Shanghai Film Festival changed its rules as actors could only walk the red carpet for two films at most. Goo Jai only took the red carpet for the earliest release THREE (SAM YUN HUNG) and gave up his other films. Yet during the film festival he would still promote for other films like S STORM. Jai Jai could not attend due to a Taiwan television series production. Media Asia Group chief Peter Lam Kin Ngok learned that they were together and rushed over to see them. Goo Jai said that he has always jam packed his scheduling. He never expected his two co-stars were even worse than he was, they were so busy that they might not even have three hours to be together! * (2016/06/11) Currently working on his new film COOK UP A STORM (FUNG MEI KONG WU ji KUET JIN SIK SUN), Nicholas Tse Ting Fung two days ago worked in Macau as he chatted with a restaurant owner. Jackie Chan yesterday with Fan Bingbing promoted their film SKIPTRACE at a press conference. They were once linked in gossip. Despite Fan Bingbing being in a relationship now, they continued to have friendly interaction on the stage. Bingbing even picked up Jackie Chan with two actresses and revealed her relationship with him. Bingbing described working together again after 7 years, they were actually like "uncle and niece". Jackie Chan praised Bingbing for her professionalism. She did not use a double for dangerous scenes and was very demanding of herself. On the set she asked for another take on her own. Jackie Chan not only gave Bingbing a self defense fan but also publicly named Big Black Bull (Li Chen) defense when he taught her self defense in intimate interaction. He said that his niece Bingbing worried her. Bingbing asked online with Li Chen, "From my uncle! Watch out Li Chen!" Zhang Lanxin and Kira Shi Shi were also in SKIPTRACE. Zhang Lanxin played a villain for the first time and had a lot of fight scenes. Shi Shi played Jackie Chan's trusty assistant. Yesterday at the press conference the host asked them to back Jackie Chan to the wall. Lanxin immediately performed a mid air split and forced Jackie Chan to the wall. * (2016/06/11) Kara Wai Ying Hung, Carlos Chan Ka Lok and director Law Yiu Fai yesterday visited a Diamond Hill nursing home. Sister Siu Hung revealed that aside from her mother, her 50 year old brother also showed signs of Alzheimer's from an examination two weeks earlier. Thus she and her sister also planned to go next month. However now she is already panicking. She said, "Three years ago I had an MRI, my brain was full!" The director praised how great Sister Siu Hung was in memorizing her lines, she did it all at once. Sister Siu Hung said that studies showed learning new things could strengthen brain power. Now the entire family is studying Buddhist scriptures. As for her mother's condition, she said that even eating was difficult as she had to be fed cereal. Once she choked while drinking and came down with pneumonia. Her mother now did not know how to react. In the film HAPPINESS (HUNG WON SI NGOR), Chan Ka Lok played a "MK Kid" and dyed his hair blond. However his scalp had a reaction and started peeling. Sister Siu Hung turned her hair silver. When she got home her entire tube turned silver as well. Sister Siu Hung also clarified that she did not constantly yell at newcomers as reported. Even her sister joked that her image was like a bitch. She joked that each time she "yelled" at newcomers she wanted to trigger their potential. Then she would comfort them. Ka Lok said that Sister Siu Hung has been very understanding of her. He shot a crying scenes for several hours and lost confidence. Sister Siu Hung would always encourage him so he could regain his confidence. * (2016/06/11) "Happy Girls" first generation member Bonnie Law Ming Chu passed away from heart disease at age 47 year last month. Her services began yesterday at the Hong Kong Funeral Parlor and the funeral would take place today. At 9AM a high monk would conduct a coffin closing ceremony and the remain will be transported to the Cape Collinson Crematorium. Raymond Wong Pak Ming said teary eyed that for over 30 years that he has known Ming Chu she was a happy person. He never thought that she would just go like this. Life was unexpected. Law Ming Chu changed her name to "Law Oi Gor", which was the name on the funeral parlor registration. The hall was decorated in simple white with a black and white final photo. Her parents' floral arrangement was on the right hand side of the hall. At the center was her three siblings' heart shaped floral arrangement. Law Ming Chu was a Buddhist so the service was a Buddhist ceremony. Yesterday over 50 monks and Buddhist disciples chanted in the Hall. Friends who came to pay their respect included Raymond Wong Pak Ming, Clifton Ko Chi Sum, Emily Kwan Bo Wai, Ng Lai Chu, Louie Castro (Ga Si Lok), Heung Wa Bo, Eddie Pang Wai On, Dik Yi Det and Rainky Wai Yu Yui. Law Ming Chu received many floral arrangements from industry insiders like Mr. and Mrs. Jacky Cheung Hok Yau, the Grasshoppers, Mr. and Mrs. Felix Wong Yat Wa, Kwan Bo Wai, Amanda Lee Wai Man, Kent Cheng Juk Si, Stephen Shiu Jr., Kenny Wong Tak Bun and Teddy Chan Tak Sum. Law Ming Chu's friend and fellow "Happy Girl" Fennie Yuen Kit Ying appeared around 4:10PM. Then Mother Law arrived. Workers set up an umbrella shield formation to block reporters' cameras for her. When the media rushed in the workers kept saying, "That's enough! That's enough!" Because the Law family hoped that the services would take place in a low key matter, the hall closed its doors to the media. Yuen Kit Ying was the only "Happy Girl" on the pallbearer list. Other members did not appear. Wong Pak Ming who discovered Law Ming Chu and "Happy Girl" member Yuen Kit Ying both came out of the hall to meet with the media. They both looked saddened. Yuen Kit Ying was too heart broken to speak to the media but stayed by Wong Pak Ming's side during the interview. Wong Pak Ming's eyes were red and swollen as he said on behalf of Law Ming Chu's family to the media, "Ming Chu's famly hoped to handle the services in a low key and solemn manner, so only friends and family were invited. They hope that the media would understand, our mood is very heavy." When he received the news of Law Ming Chu's death he did not dare to believe it and immediately called her phone. However no one answered. Later her family confirmed the news. Wong Pak Ming was stunned. "The last time I saw was two weeks before, when a group of friends celebrated my 70th birthday. We had dinner at a Residence Bel-Air restaurant. At the time she was very happy and talked nonstop. She was very spirited. I never thought that she would just go like that. Life is unexpected." Was Law Ming Chu ill? Wong Pak Ming said, "Supposedly it was heart disease, actually it's unclear. (Was it related to diet pills?) Because someone asked her to work on an internet series, girls like to be pretty. Maybe she wanted to appear at her best. Whether thus her health had problem it would be a speculation. (Did you ask her to make a movie?) She didn't tell me about the internet series. I didn't ask at dinner. At dinner she was all laughs, my impression of her was a happy nut. During the Cinema City era she was already very happy and had a lot to say. For over 30 years that I have known her she was a happy person. I really miss her." The workers distributed a memorial program "In Loving Memory" to the media. It included a lot of Law Ming Chu's photos and listed her past work. It also included many eulogies from friends. The first page was written by her mentor Wong Pak Ming. Louie Castro, Irene Wan Bik Ha, Kelvin Kwan Chor Yiu, Sam Lee Chan Sam all wrote eulogies to remember her. * (2016/06/10) The 45 year old invisible tycoon in the entertainment industry, Louis Koo Tin Lok has not yet won any Best Actor award but he is fully committed to film. Last year he made 14 films in one breath and this year will be his harvest period. In the summer, he will have 5 film releases as well as the animated films FINDING DORY and ICE AGE: COLLISION COURSE. With his current rate 20 million RMB per film, this summer he already made 100 million and all 5 films are guaranteed to be hits. He can rise to become the 2 billion RMB box office star. His passion for film can rival that of Andy Lau Tak Wa. In recent years he founded One Cool Film Production, not only investing in film productions but also on his own films. Last year he made 14 films and 13 commercials and made over 400 million yuan. In this summer Goo Jai alone will have five film releases, including the July 14th release, the Johnnie To Kei Fung directed THREE (SAM YUN HUNG). This pair has already worked together 11 times and this time Goo Jai will continue to play a cop; in the July 29th release LEAGUE OF GODS (FUNG SUN JUEN KEI), although he will only guest star he will also make time to promote Mr. and Mrs. Charles Heung Wa Keung's comeback investment and support his former boss who gave him a lot of opportunities; he, Charmaine Sheh Si Man and Nick Cheung Ka Fai starred in LINE WALKER (SI TOH HUNG JEH), in which he will play a drug dealer with a sly and cold personality. The film has been tentatively scheduled for an August 11th release; in CALL OF HEROES (NGAI SING) Goo Jai will play a evil warlord and the film will be release on August 18th. The Z STORM (Z FUNG BO) sequel S STORM has been scheduled for an August 25th release. In S STORM Goo Jai will play a high ranking ICAC investigator of a HK$ 1 billion corruption case. This time Julian Cheung Chi Lam and Vic Chou Yu Man will join him in the cast. Among the 5 films Goo Jai will play both good and evil characters and definitely will have a lot of fun with his acting. Even without any award nomination for encouragement, his salary can easily reach 100 million RMB. However, his biggest headache is from how to schedule his promotions to avoid upsetting anyone. Currently he is working on MAU SING YUN (MEOW STAR ALIEN) and still has 3 movies that are waiting to start production, but Goo Jai will make room to promote every film. He will face stiff competition from films like the three Best Actor Chow Yun Fat, Aaron Kwok Fu Sing and Tony Leung Ka Fai starred COLD WAR 2 (HONG JIN II). The first COLD WAR made over HK$ 40 million to become the 2012 Chinese film box office champion. Chow Yun Fat joins the cast in the second film. Goo Jai then has to fend off animations FINDING DORY and ICE AGE: COLLISION COURSE. * (2016/06/10) Patrick Tam Yiu Man in the China Thailand film co-production WITCH DOCTOR played a deranged killer. The "human sausage" scene was rather memorable for him, as he felt nauseous from just thinking about it. "That prop sausage is really edible, but it took a long time to make and was kept in the freezer. The pork fat in the sausage has turned greasy while the rest was very dry. However I had to pretend that it was delicious. With several bad takes, I couldn't take it anymore by the last bad take." The new film was released earlier in the Mainland and made over 10 million RMB in a week. For a small budget investment the performance was decent. Ah Tam said that he will focus on a film's screenplay and not its scale of production. * (2016/06/10) The film NOW YOU SEE ME 2 two nights ago held its Hong Kong premiere. Irene Wan Bik Ha, Kara Wai Ying Hung, Kathy Yuen (Tong Yi), Albert Yeung Sau Sing and his wife showed their support. Tong Yi recently took two film roles and would play characters at age 18 and 35. She is 28. She thought playing her age 10 years ago would be more difficult because back then she felt like she had no idea what she was doing. In addition she has always been tough. Her boyfriend Ken Hung Cheuk Lap thought that she felt more like a brother. Thus her boyfriend often asked her to be gentler. Yet she insisted on being herself. In the new film in which she played a more mature character, she would be fortunate enough to work with a Best Actor. Wai Ying Hung lately has been busy with several film promotions. HAPPINESS (HUNG WON SI NGOR) was even chosen as a recommended film in the U.S. She will have to fly there to promote. Siu Hung admitted that she did not expect the film would receive any international award, since it was a low budget non entertainment film. She only wanted good box office and good word of mouth. She said that the film's subject was Alzheimer's and many people after watching it shed tears. Siu Hung said that her and the director's mother both had Alzheimer's. She also provided her mother's experience to the production. She played a Alzheimer's patient in her 60s. She could not wear make up and had to have wrinkles and white hair. Siu Hung said, "I don't mind playing ugly, I only mind that no one says I am a pretty demon woman. You should call me pretty demon woman to give me some satisfaction!" * (2016/06/10) Director Johnnie To Kei Fung earlier led his new film THREE (SAM YUN HUNG)'s leads Vicki Zhao Wei, Louis Koo Tin Lok and Wallace Chung Han Leung in an all new promotional photo shoot. During the shoot everyone concentrated on their characters' personalities. Goo Jai was as silent and cool as the cop in the film. Chung Han Leung radiated that evil charming smile, with a heart pounding conspiracy brewing behind it. The film's "female boss" Zhao Wei was dressed in red and smoked a cigar. THREE will be released in Hong Kong on July 14th and will appear this weekend at the Shanghai Film Festival. Goo Jai, Chung Han Leung and the film's other producer and screenwriter Yau Nai Hoi will attend. * (2016/06/09) The film BEGIN AGAIN (FONG YIN SAI SAI LEI) two days ago held a Beijing press conference with its gold label producer Stanley Kwan Kam Peng, Golden Horse Award director Lin Yu-Hsien, screenwriter Hu Rongrong, leads Lee Joon-Gi, Zhou Dongyu, Xing Jiadong, Zoey Tang Yuan, Wang Zizi. The film poster and teaser were released and the film release date was announced to be the Qixi Festival. Leads Lee Joon-Gi, Zhou Dongyu played lie detector games as fans' screams pushed the atmosphere to its boiling point. Lee Joon-Gi and Zhou Dongyu were hooked up to a lie detector machine. With the host's questions, they could not help but reveal a lot of behind the scene stories the from. In coordination with the questions, the leads' highlight videos were shown as well. Lee Joon-Gi ignored his image and inhaled pork knuckle, which actually was for pursing Zhou Dongyu in the film. Zhou Dongyu sang in the bathroom and even threw stuff in a rage. She stated, "This time the violence enabled me to have a real emotional eruption." Lee Joon-Gi reprised a small dance number from the film and the crowd erupted. When asked about how many times they kissed in the film, Lee Joon-Gi said too many. Zhou Dongyu after learning that could not tolerate the fans' scream as she yelled, "Joon-Gi Oppa is still everyone's Oppa!" Speaking how the film connected lies with love, Lee Joon-Gi said that his character has always been her boyfriend. To his character, he lied because of how deeply he loved. Zhou Dongyu said that lying helped her overcome difficult times and start her life over. To her, lying was deep love. Actor Xing Jiadong said that in the film he and Lee Joon-Gi were like brothers, as he was concerned for the young couple. Playing Zhou Dongyu's bestie in the film, Tang Yuan even revealed that she bravely made her feeling know to Lee Joon-Gi. In addition, the film officially announced that its title has changed from UNDER THE SICILY SUN to BEGIN AGAIN. Speaking of this Chinese title change, executive and chief producer Jiang Hao said, "Sicily is closely related to the film story, at the same time in order to guarantee the aesthetic romance of the romantic film, our team also went on location to Italy. The film story started with a beautiful lie. The word lie was the most able to directly hit the nail of the film story center on the head and even more suitable for it. I believe that after the audience watched the film everyone would understand the hidden meaning of this word." Director Lin Yu-Hsien even revealed that he would often after drinking with Lee Joon-Gi said "something romantic between men", which led to endless screams throughout the crowd. [ BLAH OF THE WEEK ] Columns, Reviews, Interviews 1. TA KUNG PAO, JUNE 10 2016, ONE WEEK IN FILM AND TELEVISION APOCALYPSE REACHES THE TOP IN MAINLAND Stepping into June, the summer begins at the movies. TA KUNG PAO, JUNE 9 2016, ASIAN FILMS YOUTHFUL IMPULSE: THE TASTE OF YOUTH HAS MEASURED CONTROL Commercial films do not necessarily dominate the market, which often is opportunity for other creators. Small budget independent productions and documentary in the past would have fewer opportunities to be released. In recent years they have had more chances to be shown on Hong Kong silver screens. The latest example naturally is Cheung King Wai's new film THE TASTE OF YOUTH. A social welfare organization funded documentary with a chance for a commercial release on many silver screens, it is already a noteworthy film/social phenomenon. - HUNG KWONG THE TASTE OF YOUTH opens with a concert that breaks the number of people in a choir. The director chose nine of the participants to be his subjects as he shot their lives, school, family and the community around them. These nine included elementary school student to young people who just graduated. The way the director brought about their stories followed the definite format of interviews, friends, family, school, work, the cameras entered the families of many leads, observed their parents' book racks, the interaction at the family dinner table and the sort. Under a set time and space, the film performed a cross section study of Hong Kong families that had the taste of youth as well as a glimpse of the middle age. No Answer Given, Just Right The families seen in the film were mostly well off, at least we did not see anyone who lived in a subdivided room (this is very easily understandable. Students with excessively difficult family environment would not have the interest in joining an activity like a ten thousand person performance). However without everyday life worries, these young people still were certain indescribable baffled. They sensed the pressure from school, ideals and future long ago. Perhaps due to the time limit (the film was less than 80 minutes long. Each character would only had eight or nine minutes). The film's camera would always maintained safe distance from its subjects, without "digging" into their background too much or diving into their worlds. Aside from the new immigrant Wa Jai's trip home to Qinghai, the entire film was about subjects in their lives that could not be more ordinary. In the end any relationship or connection between the film's prestigious school class president and Band 3 school bullied fat girl, or the musical prodigy and the literature girl whose parents "vanished" might be affected by the viewers' personal experience. Yet overall, although the young people's stress or discomfort could be clearly seen, the director did not give a clear answer and direction. The writer thought that such a handling was just right. Keeping Its Distance To Keep From Contamination Director Cheung King Wai made a name for himself with the 2009 film KJ MUSIC AND LIFE as he swept many award shows as a new director with a documentary film. To the writer, this more or less has to do with the personal charm of the subject as it enabled the director and the audience to be unknowingly "led" by the "protagonist's" point of view. Seeing how he rebelled against authority on the screen, examined life, broke away from his "falsely kind" father and the like, actually more or less even further absolved his inability to take the next step in his performance career. The director was unable to detect this point, and enabled the film to more or less have a promotional film flavor. In this aspect, the director might be too close to the subject and instead was under the subject's control. Of course, some documentary directors were very self centered, as their work more or less became self advertisement. The writer has seen a director, who was also shooting young people and ended up putting the subject's thank you to the director in the film...... From this point, obvious improvement could be seen in Cheung King Wai's THE TASTE OF YOUTH, the camera kept a suitable distance from the subjects and their families. It also did not permit excessive self performance from them, although some young men and women in the film obviously had personal or family problems. Of course, characters that were full of dramatic color like in KJ: MUSIC AND LIFE actually were not easy to come by. These characters often were very attractive subjects, but how to handle them was a science. Perhaps under the influence of the popularity of Taiwan documentary films in recent years, Hong Kong had more organizations that sponsored documentary films and invited offered documentary film directors to shoot certain events or organizations. THE TASTE OF YOUTH was so, as was earlier films like the Ruby Yang directed MY VOICE, MY LIFE. Some Taiwan directors also shot the story of Hong Kong youth on a bicycle ride around Taiwan. This type of films often had a blind spot, the funding organization often came with good intention. It hoped that the film could spread positive energy, show the bright side (like the story of a disadvantaged youth participating in certain events and ended up changing his life). Yet this subject first format often was harmful to documentary films. THE TASTE OF YOUTH's release organization Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups handled this point very well. It did not have too many good, hopeful or bright spots, but displayed a story of young people with its feet on the ground. Perhaps, this was the expression of experienced social welfare organization's self confidence. 3. TA KUNG PAO, JUNE 9 2016, LIGHT SHADOW PATH THE CAPITAL GAME IS NO HELP TO THE FILM INDUSTRY A colleague in Weibo "Friend Circle" posted a road side cafe photo and wrote, "I used to be at this coffee shop, now it has already expanded to a road side cafe. Everyone is talking about projects and films. Everyone is a filmmaker, is this a good thing?" This can be said as a "natural phenomenon". In the business world, fame, fortune and trend are the hottest topics. To the Chinese market, film is a very much the business of the moment. Film is not only just a hot topic and an industry, the capital game that centers around film is even thriving. Unfortunately this capital game has become more and more absurd. From a few years ago when actual valued film production companies went public for funding to now "speculate" shell companies, sign a few film celebrities in order to make waves in the capital market and give the film industry the color of a bubble, actually they are detrimental to film companies and people with actual film operations. This trend should not be encouraged. In the past few years, stars joined public companies and sent the company value rocketing. They could not be happier with the speculation. Now the speculation of star additions is done, it is the director's turn. A company invited a big director to join. In the next few years the company will be able to have advanced or exclusive rights to invest in all or some of the director's film and television work. The director also promised to make at least one or two films every three years, four at most in six years. On the surface, that company would be able to receive the documented quantity, but the low quantity would not be able to sustain a film company's operation. At least it would have to sign more than five directors with the same condition to be able to become a sizable film company. The even greater problem was, that director could not possibly be able to fulfill the deal because earlier he has already signed no less than two similar alliance agreement. In other words, if the director had to fulfill all the signed contracts, he would have to make three movies a year. Would it be possible? Everyone has a general idea. Inviting directors to join a film company has become a new wave of trend. On the surface it helps production even more than the addition of actors, but actually those directors who caught the company's eyes would make less than one movie a year on average and had a big pile of contracts on hand. They would have to know that they were only participating in a capital game. In the past such games were very successful, company values would rise several folds to several dozen folds. If anyone were able to sell early, they could make a huge sum. yet now this type of games has lost its charm. After the aforementioned company announced the big director's addition, its stock prices not only did not rise but even fell. Because the market already knew that such news was only announcing some impossible mission. The company still remained in the concept stock stage. Its vision of profit was only wishful thinking, those who were fooled often would learn to get "smart". The game of using film for stock speculation should no longer continue, otherwise directors who participated in the game would sacrifice their credibility. In addition whether they would be interested in toiling away to make movies, they would also come in question. - TIN LIK [ In Production Now/Soon ] SKY ON FIRE Can : Chung Tin For AKA : BATTLE OF LIFE AKA : Tin For d. The railway from Tianjin to Nanjing in East China became a key military transportation route, heavily guarded by Japanese soldiers. Railroad worker Ma Yuan leads a team of freedom fighters. Using his deep knowledge of the train network, he and his men sabotage it, ambushing Japanese soldiers and stealing supplies to feed the starving Chinese. Although the freedom fighters have no weapons of their own, they employ whatever tools are at hand, including shovels, loose railway track planks and diverted trains. The local Chinese call the unlikely heroes the "Railroad Tigers". The freedom fighters find themselves on the wrong side of the tracks when the Japanese send reinforcements to Shandong. In an act of defiance, Ma Yuan launches his most dangerous mission yet, blowing up a heavily-guarded railroad bridge. When the Japanese learn of the crippling plan, which will derail the war effort, the stakes are raised even higher. --- [ Entertainment URL ] MEDIA ASIA http://www.mediaasia.com EMPEROR MOTION PICTURES http://www.emp.hk PEGASUS MOTION PICTURES http://www.pegasusmovie.com WE PICTURES http://www.wepictures.com CINEMA POPULAR http://www.cinemapopular.com MEI AH http://www.meiah.com NEW ASIA ENTERTAINMENT GROUP http://www.aeghk.com GOLDEN SCENE http://www.goldenscene.com Commercial Radio http://www.crhk.com.hk Television Broadcast Limited http://www.tvb.com.hk --- [ NORTH AMERICA AREA CONCERTS ] * HENRY HUO 2016 WORLD TOUR VANCOUVER DATE AND TIME: Friday, September 9 2016 @ 8 PM VENUE LOCATION: River Rock Casino Resort 8811 River Road Richmond BC V6X 3P8 Canada TICKET PRICES: VIP CA$ 198, 168, 128, 88 TICKET OUTLET LOCATION: River Rock Casino Resort Ticket Office 8811 River Rd. Co-presented with Subway Cinema as a part of the 15th New York Asian Film Festival (NYAFF), the inaugural Korean Movie Night New York – Master Series will focus on Director/Producer Lee Joon-ik, a master of Korean historical drama. The program will consist of 6 of Director Lee’s most representative films, with the screenings held June 28 - July 2 at Walter Reade Theater (165 West 65th St.) and SVA Beatrice Theater (333 West 23rd St.). In the past two decades, he has produced, directed, and even appeared in over 20 films, many of which have played key roles in shaping the Korean cinescape. More than any other Korean filmmaker, Lee Joon-ik has focused on telling the stories about the Korean society and its traditions though the format of historical dramas, often with razor-sharp satire and elements of black comedy, skillfully creating fictional stories around historical characters, and also reflecting on Korea’s contemporary politics. While historical drama is one of the staples of Korean cinema, director Lee has been responsible for the genre’s now decade long resurgence with his 2005 hit King And The Clown. Having established himself as a leading master of the genre, he has continued to make historic dramas as his preferred mode of communicating with the audience, innovatively utilizing his art to allow Korean history and culture to be better understood by a growing international audience, and also to generations of young Koreans. About Korean Movie Night New York Korean Movie Night New York (KMN) is redesigned as "Korean Movie Night New York: Premiere Showcase" and “Korean Movie Night New York: Master Series” in 2016. It was a continuing series of bi-weekly film screenings that introduces the full spectrum of both contemporary and classic Korean cinema to New York audiences, from popular blockbusters, independent films, and documentaries, to animation and family movies. KMN was launched in 2010 as a successor to Korean Cine Forum, an earlier film screening series that was organized by the Korean Cultural Service in 1996.
