Clara revealed that recently she took a Chinese romantic film, in which she will play a model and shoot on location in Guangzhou. She felt that film productions in Korea and China were not too different, only sometimes that the language could be a problem. However she learned a few lines of Cantonese like how are you and I love you. Did she prefer romance or action films? She stated, "I am more active, earlier when I played a killer in the film LINE WALKER (SI TOH HUNG JEH) I had to keep training. I got into better and better shape. It was also full of challenges, so I wanted to make more action films." Would she like to be the Asian Angelina Jolie? She excitedly said, "I really admire her, that's my dream. If in the future when my movie comes out, please write about me as 'the next Angelina Jolie Clara Lee'. Thank you." She also admired Zhang Ziyi. * (2016/06/08) Jackie Chan earlier went to Wuhan for the Jackie Chan film and television media academy 2016 graduation ceremony and shared his life experience with the students. "You have to learn all kinds of abilities, don't question yourself. I hope you would work hard and learn at any time. After graduation you also have to be a compound talent, when you have a goal you shouldn't give up." * (2016/06/08) The William Chan Wai Ting, Tina Tang Yixin, Jessica Jung starred romantic comedy I LOVE THAT CRAZY LITTLE THING will open in the summer. Yesterday the film released a variety of outstanding breakthrough performance of William from the film. His earlier film image did not connect to the locals. His Putonghua was not too great either. In order to play a romantic comedy well, William originally was very worried. Yet as he slowly performed, he realized that it was not difficult at all. He played funny and cute at will, even William's often self ridiculing Hong Kong style Putonghua brought a lot of joy to the set. His disruptive performance even received elder Nicholas Tse Ting Fung's praise. Ting Fung said, "I can see that this time he really lets go in his performance. I am really proud of him." Gillian Chung Yun Tung also was surprised with William's performance, saying that she has never seen this side of him. * (2016/06/07) The Pang Ho Cheung directed, Miriam Yeung Chin Wa and Shawn Yue Man Lok starred film LOVE IN A PUFF (JI MING YU CHUN GIU) already has two film installments. The third has always been rumored, but since the 2012 sequel LOVE IN THE BUFF (CHUN GIU YU JI MING) it never had a production start date. Reportedly the director has never gotten the script ready. At first he wanted to make mother in law daughter in law problems, but during the creative process he ran into a lot of problems. After 4 years he finally got the story he wanted for the third film. The film title will be LOVE OFF THE CUFF (CHUN GIU GAU JI MING). Aside from the original team, this film will invite a Hollywood star to perform. In the story advertising director Jimmy met this superstar through a commercial. Cherie found out and visited the set out of curiosity. Media Asia will invest at least HK$ 60 million on this film, which will shoot on location in Japan. The film will start production at the end of October. Yesterday Pang Ho Cheung said, "That's right! CHUN GIU GAU JI MING should start production at the end of October. Because after two films, the third film has to be a big change. It has to have a lot of differences to be able to hold on the audience's eyes. Everyone would see that this film would not be the usual small scale romantic film." Will Jimmy and Cherie be married in the third film? Pang Ho Cheung said, "Not yet, they are still living together. However a lot happened between them. Everyone will know when they see it. At this stage I am not at liberty to say too much." As for the Hollywood star, he said, "We have already made initial contact. If it really happens then we will talk. In addition this time we will look for stars in Taiwan and the Mainland to guest star." Yeung Chin Wa reportedly wanted a daughter. Because she only has one son Torres now, she feels that her family is still not perfect. Thus she would like to have a daughter soon. Yet because of LOVE 3 her plan will have to be postponed to the middle of next year. Chin Wa said, "Leave parenthood arrangement to Heaven, leave it to fate! The company has already notified me, I really look forward to it." * (2016/06/07) The Sean Lau Ching Wan, Louis Koo Tin Lok and Eddie Peng Yu-Yan starred new film CALL OF HEROES (NGAI SING) earlier released its poster as well as its cast' costumes. Ching Wan who has rarely been in an action film held a long whip. The bully Goo Jai carried a pistol while Peng Yu-Yan wielded a blade in each hand. However they were no match for the dominance of Wu Jing with a long spear. For the film release, the film company will held a Benny Chan Muk Sing action film festival and CALL OF HEROES will close out the event. * (2016/06/07) The Cultural Industries Summit 2016 took place yesterday. Attendees included Association of Cultural Industries president Peter Lam Kin Ngok, iQiyi founder Gong Yu, famous Korean singer Park Jin-Young, Andrew Lau Wai Keung, Chan Hing Ka, Leung Ka Shu and Leon Lai Ming. Lau Wai Keung, Chan Hing Ka and Leung Ka Shu's topic was "how creators can grasp 'one belt, one road' opportunities to break out of Hong Kong". Lau Wai Keung admitted that when working in the Mainland, he had to put aside the differences and his ego. Yesterday at the Cultural Industries summit, Lau Wai Keung, Chan Hing Ka and Leung Ka Shu's topic was "how creators can grasp 'one belt, one road' opportunities to break out of Hong Kong". Leung Ka Shu had decades of television experience, he saw how small the Hong Kong market was while the Mainland had a huge audience and economic network. It was a good direction for young people to develop their careers; Chan Hing Ka said that the first qualification to break into the Mainland market was Putonghua fluency and courage to innovate; Lau Wai Keung also cited an example and said that in 1992 he went to Beijing to make a movie. Because he could not speak Putonghua fluently he had to speak English to communicate in Beijing. Like the average Hong Kong person he thought he was above needing to learn Putonghua. Now he has already trained the team to learn Putonghua fluently. He said, "I understood that working in the Mainland, I had to put aside the differences and my ego!" Leung Ka Shu also agreed that in order to connect the Mainland and Hong Kong cultures, the language barrier had to be overcome. Thus most companies used Mainland screenwriters to ease the conflict between the Mainland and Hong Kong. With more familiarity with the language, they could communicate more and the work format could be simplified as well. Speaking of the Hong Kong domestic film advantage, Lau Wai Keung felt that Hong Kong people was great at being flexible and grasping the market. However in order to understand a place, they needed to live there for actual contact. Thus he set up his office in Beijing, often "BS"ing with investors, young screenwriters at the company in order to understand the market there. Chan Hing Ka felt that Hong Kong's advantage were "fast, brutal, accurate" and "cheap, pretty, great"; Lau Wai Keung also agreed that "fast, brutal, accurate" were Hong Kong's advantage. On creators' ideas, Hong Kong knew how to adapt more. Leung Ka Shu felt that Hong Kong's advantages and flaws were all in one. Hong Kong had an international vision, but could not completely connect to the Mainland. Thus it needed to have cultural exchanges to understand and communicate with each other more to try to catch up as soon as possible. He pointed out that film still had a lot of room for development in the Mainland market and larger degree of acceptance. Television had quotas, only five creators could be from overseas. Thus he hoped that Mainland would give looser opportunities, through cultural industries exchanges opening the Mainland quota to Hong Kong to achieve co-existence despite being different. Leung Ka Shu revealed that Media Asia will work with iQiYi in June on the internet series INFERNAL AFFAIRS (MO GAN DOH), with 3 seasons and 36 episodes. The investment will be near 100 million yuan and the production will shoot in Hong Kong, Shenzhen and Thailand. He said that the film version was a successful example and had global influence. Thus the Mainland also saw its important. Most of the series actors will be from Hong Kong like Gallen Lo (Law Ka Leung), Law Chung Him and Damien Lau Chung Yan. Who will play the film's Tony Leung Chiu Wai and Andy Lau Tak Wa characters? Leung Ka Shu said that the television version will start from the story's center, with the police and the mob undercover agents as the subject then continuing to later generation's developments. Will the film actors guest star? Leung Ka Shu revealed that Eric Tsang Chi Wai and Berg Ng Ting Yip's characters will appear again. Wai Jai's daughter will be Cecilia So Lai Shan. * (2016/06/06) Andy Lau Tak Wa produced, starred and invested in the film SHOCK WAVE (CHAK DAN JUEN GA), which yesterday shot a bomb disposal scene in Wan Chai. Playing a bomb expert Wa Jai despite the heat put on the 70 pound anti explosive gear. Other actors included Ron Ng Cheuk Hei, Philip Keung Ho Man, Louis Cheung Kai Chung and Babyjohn Choi Hong Yik. This time was Ron's first contact with film, Ron said that Wa Jai very patiently taught him. Thus he did not ask about the salary. Wa Jai immediately joked, "If he doesn't mind then I am not paying." Yesterday Wa Jai was a bomb expert who was handling a home made bomb that resembled the one at the Boston Marathon. Ron as Wa Jai's subordinate even helped him with the anti explosive suit. The set also had many prop fire engines, police vehicles and actors in fire fighter and police officer uniforms. Wa Jai worked up a sweat and said that he only felt one word in the 70 pound suit, and that was "hot". It felt like when he was in the muscle suit for RUNNING ON KARMA (DAI JET LO). He also said that before the shoot he went to class to learn about bombs. Yesterday on the set real explosive experts were on hand to supervise. Wa Jai revealed that the film would have many explosion scenes. One of the key scene would be in the one to one scale Cross Harbor Tunnel that was built in the Hong Kong International Terminals. Currently basically only the tunnel scenes have not been shot yet. Would the tunnel blow up? Wa Jai declined to reveal. He only said that the director tended to shoot for realism. 1/3 will be done in post production. Why did he ask Ron to perform? Wa Jai said, "I wanted the film to be younger. The director chose him. After I found out of course I agreed." Did Wa Jai get thinner for the movie? Wa Jai said, "No, because I have to work with Keung Ho Man. He is too thin. I am fit." Ron said, "In comparison then I am fat!" Did Wa Jai feel that Ron had shades of him? He said, "He is more handsome than me, but I have been handsome before." Wa Jai also revealed that in the film he and Song Jia would have relationship scenes. In the first film after he left TVB Wa Jai was able to work with Wa Jai. Wa Jai said that this was the first film of Ron's beautiful life. Working with Wa Jai for the first time, Ron said that Brother Wa taught him very patiently so he did not care about the salary. Wa Jai joked, "Since he doesn't mind I won't pay, I haven't thought about paying. He is here to learn. I only got to work on it because I paid. Ron in the first scene had to introduce explosives, the lines were very tough to remember. In the entire scene he was solo." Ron said that the biggest pressure from this scene was Wa Jai sitting down and watching him act with his arms crossed. Ron who has recently been working in the Mainland earlier was caught taking women home with a van. Ron replied, "I am not saying too much, she was a friend, if this keeps up we might not even get to be friends anymore." Cheung Kai Chung played a tour guide. He said that the most fun part of the role was speaking Putonghua. He was very serious with his acting, and the result became comedic spots. In addition, playing an off duty cop, Choi Hong Yik revealed that in one scene he would be strapped to bombs. Wa Jai in the end would save him. * (2016/06/06) Alex Fong Lik Sun, Kabby Hui Nga Ting and Alycia Chan Yuen Hung yesterday promoted the Wilson Chin Kwok Wai directed film KIDNAP DING DING DON (BONG GA DING DING DONG) on the streets and gave away facial masks to pedestrians. Lead actress Ivana Wong Yuen Chi was absent due to her play rehearsal. Siu Fong said, "What is there to talk about with today's promotion?) Wilson answered, "I heard you have a new girlfriend!" Siu Fong said, "You can force a promotion like this, don't believe the film company." Earlier Siu Fong revealed that the trigger for the break up with Stephy Tang Lai Yun was their film ANNIVERSARY (GEI LIM YUT). The film's director Patrick Kong (Yip Lim Sum) yesterday said online, "Finally, I have enough courage to watch it again." Did Siu Fong feel that Yip Lim Sum felt guilty about their break up? Siu Fong said, "His mouth really is cursed. However, since our relationship problems appeared this year he hasn't contacted met. Actually this year would be a bad year for me anyway. Papa wasn't feeling well, neither were my cats, and I am like this." * (2016/06/06) Chrissie Chau Sau Na, Joyce Cheng Yun Yi, Babyjohn Choi Hong Yik and director Kearen Pang Sau Wai two nights ago attended the film 29+1's production wrap banquet. The event presented birthday cakes to Yun Yi and Sister Na in a belated birthday celebration. Earlier spraining her ankle during the shoot, Sister Na still needed bandages and said that after seeing a doctor she could not wear high heels for now. Chau Sau Na said that in her new film HUSBAND KILLER (NUI JI FOOK SAU) she would have to play a burglar. In one scene she would have to run in 3 inch heels. "Because of the earlier ankle injury, the director asked me if I would be able to do it. I said yes, but when I had to run to a dead stop my legs went weak and I knelt. Because the ankle injury my leg suddenly lost strength and went." Sister Na said that later she went to the hospital. Only her old wound was affected. The swelling has started to ease as she continued to work. Cheng Yun Yi revealed that she already turned 29. Earlier she and a female friend went on a vacation to celebrate her birthday. She posted her bikini photos and received many praises. Yun Yi said, "Earlier I went to Bali for four days and three nights to celebrate my birthday. I brought four swimsuits in different colors and different styles. Actually it's very hard for me to get swimsuits that fit. If they didn't look lame on me they were already great." Yun Yi also said that she was the most touched to receive a vinyl record this year, a duet with her mother Lydia Shum Din Ha when she was a child. She said, "The vinyl record wasn't anything valuable, but the thought was very moving. To have this group of good friends I feel very happy and rich." Choi Hong Yik spoke of the kiss scene with Yun Yi. He said, "My character is very shy and has never kissed a girl. So he was very afraid of kissing Yun Yi." He said that he already told his wife about the kiss scene before hand. Was he afraid that people would mention the classic scene when Yun Yi kissed Ron Ng Cheuk Hei? He said, "No, now Yun Yi is already a goddess." * (2016/06/05) The Andy Lau Tak Wa invested, produced and starred new film SHOCK WAVE (CHAK DAN JUEN GA) is in production now. Yesterday the film shot on location in Wan Chai. The team erected wooden barriers to keep outsiders from affecting the production progress. Prop police vehicles, metal barricades and a dozen or so extras in police uniforms were on hand. Wa Jai was very handsome in his police uniform. The scene seemed to be about a bomb being found. Wa Jai discussed how to defuse the bomb with Philip Keung Ho Man. During the shoot director Herman Yau Lai To often rehearsed with them. Ron Ng Cheuk Hei also had a part in the film. Yesterday he appeared in a Special Duties Unit uniform. Wa Jai spoke with Ron. Due to the heat Ron took off his uniform for a breather between shoots. * (2016/06/05) The Emperor Motion Picture invested 4D Chinese cuisine film COOK UP A STORM (FUNG MEI KONG WU ji KUET JIN SIK SUN) yesterday held a press conference in Macau. The film's director Raymond Yip Wai Man appeared with Ge You, Nicholas Tse Ting Fung, Jung Yong-Hwa, Tiffany Tang Yan and Bai Bing. Emperor Group chief Dr. Albert Yeung Sau Sing also showed his support. Ting Fung and Jung Yong-Hwa not only caught fish and crab with their bare hands, Yong-Hwa even personally fed Bai Bing at the tasting like a gentleman. At the press conference, the event announced Anthony Wong Chau Sun's addition as the kitchen king who would battle with flavor king Ge You. Chau Sun pointed out that that would be their first collaboration. "Ge You is my idol, I was already studying him at school." Chau Sun revealed that soon after the production began he was invited to participate as one of the original characters. The character only had one scene. As for the cooking competition in the film, he said, "Actually I don't know what I should cook, because the production hasn't started yet I don't know the details." Chau Sun said that he liked to cook too. His expertise of course was instant noodles. He would also cook some steaks, spaghetti type Western dishes. He was also inspired by GAME OF THRONES as he created a dish called "Kingdom Chicken", for which he stuffed all the ingredients into the chicken then roast it in the oven for two to three hours. Now he has bought a book to prepare to study how to make 100 types of hamburgers. He even said that he admired Tse Ting Fung very much because he had to study all the dishes in the film, which was no easy task. He even appreciated Ting Fung's superb cooking abilities. Because of all the cuisine in the film, Director Yip revealed that Yong-Hwa loved to eat the most. He ate everything. Every time he saw the cuisine he would go "wow" as his eyes lit up. Yong-Hwa said in Chinese, "I am an eater!" He remembered frying beef and onion the most, from which he suffered a huge setback. He also revealed that during the shoot Ting Fung treated him to his home made apple pie and roast pig. The event arranged for Ting Fung and Yong-Hwa to catch fish and crab bare hand. When Ting Fung caught the fish, he returned it to the water twice and said that he was afraid that it would be away from water for too long. They also assisted two Michelin Star chefs and competed in a cooking contest. Chau Sun and Ge You gave them thumbs up after tasting the food. Yong-Hwa personally fed Bai Bing for her tasting and led to screams. Later Ting Fung, Yong-Hwa and Bai Bing spoke to the Hong Kong media. Tang Yan left early. Ting Fung said that it was very rare for them to have so few bad takes despite the language barrier. He was very lucky to run into such actors who were willing to learn and high quality. Yong-Hwa said that everyone took great care of him during his first Chinese film, which put him more at ease during the production and made him believe deeply that the production would go smoothly. Bai Bing said that her first attempt in this subject was a completely different experience. Ting Fung in the film played a street stall cook and dressed more casually. Two nights ago he still worked on the film without shaving. He only shaved for the press conference. He revealed that the production still had 10 more days and he would not be able to spend Father's Day with his sons. Earlier he performed two songs on a Mainland program and received decent response. He stated, "I wouldn't mind performing a concert, but I want an outdoor one where the audience can move and not just sit." He revealed that earlier he asked about venues and understood that many venues had restrictions. Did he celebrate his younger son's birthday last month? He said, "No comment on anything else." Faye Wong will perform a concert in December. He again replied, "No comment". When asked if he had anything good news, he pretended not to hear and left. Yong-Hwa admitted that he was not a great cook. For the film he learned to use a knife and plating. Thus he became interested in cooking and hoped to be able to cook in the future. Would he ask Ting Fung for advice? Yong-Hwa said, "His cooking really is great. I can sense that he really loves to cook. I have a lot to learn from him." Because in the film he and Bai Bing had a kiss scene, he was asked if it has been shot yet? He said, "It's a secret." Reporters asked if he could not reveal anything about any intimate scene. Ting Fung cut in, "Maybe Yong-Hwa and I have one." He immediately pretended to kiss. * (2016/06/04) Ronald Cheng Chung Kei earlier on facebook announced that he would perform a concert in the Venetian Macau on September 10th, but did not reveal whether he will perform in Hong Kong. Ronald's new film CONCERTO OF THE BULLY (DAI LOK SI WAI OI PUI LOK) was also related to music. Yesterday the trailer was released. Ronald played a taxi driver whose personality was still a little ill tempered like T-Rex. He would drop the f bombs while listening the radio broadcast, "X scream! And X yell!" In the film he, Michael Ning (Bak Ji) and Philip Keung Ho Man played mobsters would kidnap Cherry Ngan Cheuk Ling. Later he and Ngan Cheuk Ling would create a story about music. Actor K-Chek earlier called the police after a gang attack. Yesterday he showed his arm injuries and said that he still had pain in his back. Currently he was waiting for the police to take his statement. He said that because he argued with his former girlfriend of three years and current artist Szebi Wong Nga Sze, he suspected that her friends attacked him. Yesterday Szebi was also on hand. She admitted that she was concerned about K-Chek's injury and said that her friend was not a suitor. Since then they no longer had any contact. As for her relationship with K-Chek, she said, "We are partners, earlier we already decided to break up because we aren't right for each other!" * (2016/06/03) Chapman To Man Chak after making LET'S EAT! (HOI FAN LA!) in Malaysia in September will make a female version of UNBEATABLE (GIK JIN) with Stephy Tang Lai Yun as the lead. He hoped that Stephy will get into six pack abdominal muscle shape in three months and even be able to fight in K-1. Ah Jat said that he has always wanted to make a kung fu film. The idea was confirmed in the beginning of the year. He said, "It's about Stephy in K-1 fighting. I know what you would say, it has nothing to do with ViuTV's G-1. Screen writer (Erica) Li Man and I had the idea long ago. It will start production in September." He hoped that this time could achieve a realistic fighting result as he did not want to rely on positioning and camera angels. Currently he has already found actresses who could fight in Thailand and Japan. He said, "No one like to watch the positioning photography anymore, so Stephy and I have an understanding. We will try to fight for real as much as we can. Last week Stephy will start karate with Yasuaki Kurata's disciple." Yasuaki Kurata in the film will play Stephy's father. Au Kam Tong and Chin Siu Ho will play her coaches and train Stephy for the competition. Ah Jat will focus on the behind the scene work. * (2016/06/03) Earlier on the ViuTV program G-1 FIGHT CLUB, Margiela Kwok Sze Lam recently caught a film company's eye as she got the chance to work on famous Japanese film star Sonny Chiba's film BREAK OUT. The film will shoot on location in Hong Kong and Okinawa. Sze Lam yesterday said, "I only got the news today. The film UNDERCOVER VS. UNDERCOVER (CHIM LUNG JUI GIK)'s producer Wong Wing Fung will be in charge of the film. He saw me in G-1 and said that I fought pretty well, so he recommended me for this film." Although she did not know what kind of character she would play, she expected a lot of fight scenes. Sze Lam said, "I should be able to handle them, because after G-1 I continued my Muay Thai and Brazilian Jiujitsu training. For realism I will try to perform my own stunts. As a new comer I have to try everything." * (2016/06/03) Directors Wong Kar Wai and Peter Chan Ho Sun earlier were invited to be the Huanxi Media Group's director shareholders. The media group revealed that they received new shares for their film and television investment rights for the next 6 years. Wong Kar Wai will produce an online television series for the first time, while Chan Ho Sun promised the Group that they will work together every 3 years to direct one or two films for them. * (2016/06/03) Consisting of four stories, GOOD TAKE TOO (DA HOI NGOR TIN HUNG) is in release now. Directing one of the stories, ARRESTED FOR SHOOTING (DOH YIK YAU DOH), Eric Tong Ka Wai joked that completely due to Eric Tsang Chi Wai's timing financing of the production a robbery was prevented from taking place. He said that he loved watching crime films and often discussing the robbery ideas on the side. Yet he was just like the filmmaker who had dreams but no achievements in the film, Ah Sai (Tsui Tin Yau). "Just a dream, no green" Thus that crime film of his dream would always stay in his dream. He could not find an investor so he wrote a story about robbing a bank to raise money for a movie. Tong Ka Wai praised Felix Wong Yat Wa who played the most wanted robber Yip Foon grasped the good and evil extremes very precisely. Tin Yau also was spot on with the passion and the loss that his character needed. He even shared that during the police ambush scene, due to the heat, the cast and the crew all hid inside the bank to enjoy the air conditioning. Pedestrians saw the bank was filled with people and thought it was a run on the bank. They also saw several actors who were dressed like robbers inside and thought they were holding people hostage. * (2016/06/03) Alex Fong Lik Sun and director Wilson Chin Kwok Wai yesterday promoted their new film KIDNAP DING DING DON (BONG GA DING DING DONG) on RoadShow. The film will premiere at the end of the month. Siu Fong said that working on Director Chin's film was different from before because his past films mostly showed the ugly side of relationships. On the other hand Director Chin's romance had truth, kindness and beauty. Siu Fong said, "During the shoot co-star Wong Yuen Chi (Ivana) wasn't married yet and I haven't broken up. After the wrap Ivana announced her wedding and everyone thought that I would follow. At the time I knew what was going on and was sunken for awhile, but I didn't feel right to tell everyone." Siu Fong said that now in order to avoid the awkwardness he would not work with old flame Stephy Tang Lai Yun for now. He joked that working with Ivana was even better. "During this film I still haven't shaken off the past Yip Lim Sum (Patrick Kong) style romance, which made Ivana yell at me for not loving her enough. I asked her if it was too simple to just fall for her, she sweetly said that it was like that for real. Then she announced her wedding. The world actually still has this type of love." Chin Kwok Wai urged all ladies to work hard because this "hot property" of Siu Fong has already returned. Was Siu Fong already ready for his next romance? He said, "Now I am not deliberately looking, I am still a homebody. If I se girls who would make my heart beat I wouldn't say no. Who doesn't like to date or be with someone, but now I wouldn't take the initiative to look. No one has taken the initiative to get close to me either." Chin Kwok Wai's wife could introduce girls to him, a light bulb went on over Siu Fong's head immediately. "That's right." * (2016/06/02) Three time Golden Horse Best Director Ann Hui On Wa yesterday was announced to be the president of the 53rd Golden Horse Award jury. She was very happy. "Since Sister Chang asked, I didn't dare to turn her down!" The Golden Horse Award will take place in Taipei on November 26th, the nominations will be announced on October 1st. * (2016/06/02) The film BOUNTY HUNTER (SEUNG GUM LIP YUN) will open on July 28th. Yesterday the "action chapter" production special was released and unveiled five bounty hunters Lee Min-Ho, Wallace Chung Han Leung, Tiffany Tang Yan, Karena Ng Chin Yu, Louis Fan Siu Wong and "Mad Man" Jeremy Xu (Tsui Ching Hei) in battles; during the chase scenes, Chung Han Leung's left eye was hit with glass shrapnel. Lee Min-Ho during a fight flipped and hit his head on the ground. Luckily they were both fine. In the 3 minute video, Chung Han Leung wielded two guns to cover his teammates in a rain of bullets; Lee Min-Ho performed a series of mid air kicks that left his opponent helpless; Tang Yan also jumped up and gave a roundhouse kick. As for the fight scenes, Lee Min-Ho experienced a lot in CITY HUNTER so he did not have a lot of pressure. "In comparison to my past safe and stable characters, this time is more immature. I feel this time is even more challenging." He also joked about the problem of shaking off his idol image. "With so much fan support I am already very thankful, I feel that the most important is to give my full effort and do my best." [ BLAH OF THE WEEK ] Columns, Reviews, Interviews 1. TA KUNG PAO, JUNE 2 2016, ASIAN FILMS SETSUKO HARA'S FLEETING GOLDEN AGE IN FILM Among Japanese actresses, Setsuko Hara might be the most internationally renowned. Already retired for over half a century before her passing, her passing's news was no less than that of any current Japanese actor. Her retrospective exhibit was even rapidly released and not just in Japan. The Hong Kong International Film Festival from June to July will release its SETSUKO HARA FOREVER program that will screen seven films from different stages of her film career. This will be a good opportunity for viewers to relive the glory days of Setsuko Hara. - HUNG KWONG The "newer" film in this program is also Setsuko Hara and Yasujiro Ozu's final film collaboration THE END OF SUMMER. The film was about a family who runs a brewery in Kyoto. The focus was on the Setsuko Hara played widow of the oldest son. In the film her character was being courted, but she declined to remarried as she was determined to live an independent life. This character was along the same vain as Setsuko Hara's characters in films like TOKYO STORY and LATE AUTUMN, but with a sense of freedom. THE END OF SUMMER was an ensemble film with many actors, among them were the Yoko Tsukasa played second daughter who pondered whether she would marry far away to Hokkaido, the Ganjiro Nakamura played old brewery owner who became addicted to gambling due to a lack of business and even hooked up with his past mistress, his oldest daughter and son in law who inherited the brewery could not be more worried......Among Ozu's collection of work, this one was rather interesting. Ozu films often were about the daily lives of ordinary people. The stories mostly took place in Tokyo, Kamakura and the like in the Kanto region. THE END OF SUMMER was a rare Ozu film that had its feature stage in the Kyoto Osaka region. The camera captured Kyoto's Machiya and Osaka's Tsutenkaku, all rare sights in Ozu's film world. Setsuko Hara in Ozu films mostly played the office lady anod often spent more time in Western clothing, which was rather different from her general impression of "Japanese beauty". In this film, Setsuko Hara who played in an art studio appeared entirely in traditional Japanese clothing; although in the film she sold Western art. TOKYO STORY Tells A Legend In the retrospective, the other Ozu film that was selected was TOKYO STORY. As one of the most important classic in Japan and even world film history, this film could be said as an important part of the Setsuko Hara legend. The war widow she played was already a memorable light of life for ages, at the same time she displayed a struggle between spirit and desire that was rarely sen in Ozu film characters. TOKYO STORY and THE END OF SUMMER together made the perfect contrast between Kanto and Kansai, and another layer of viewing pleasure other than the worship of a film goddess. If you have not seen the lonely wife under another film master Mikio Naruse's lens, your Setsuko Hara film image definitely has not been completed. In the same period when she and Ozu kept working together, Setsuko Hara also frequently appeared as the lead in Naruse's films and often played the ordinary housewife in the ordinary family. They were often unhappy. These characters were even more capable of showing the audience her acting potential and not just the ability to play those women Ozu idealized a little. The program also selected REPAST and SOUND OF THE MOUNTAIN that were adapted respectively from Fumiko Hayashi and Yasunari Kawabata novels. REPAST was an important work that brought Mikio Naruse to his creative peak and found his creative wellspring of Fumiko Hayashi. Setsuko Hara in the film played the housewife whose daily chore has run the joy out of her but she still persevered and struggled for independence. As for SOUND OF THE MOUNTAIN, it was adapted from famous literature. The Kamakuro middle class family in the film did not have the down to earth flavor of REPAST's Osaka salary family, but the delicate relationships between husband and wife and father in law and daughter in law were even more intriguing. Shaping Different Images In Three Stages Setsuko Hara twice made elegant transformations in her film career, from the "wife of militarism" to the "goddess of democracy", then to the "representative of the traditional woman". Ozu and Naruse's claims to fame were representative of her third stage. As for work from the second stage, the program selected Akira Kurosawa's NO REGRETS FOR OUR YOUTH and Keisuke Kinoshita's HERE'S TO THE YOUNG LADY; both directors at the time were rising new forces. NO REGRETS FOR OUR YOUTH was about a left wing scholar's oppression under the militaristic government and had long been a world classic. Known to fewer people, HERE'S TO THE YOUNG LADY not only had Keisuke Kinoshita but also another film industry legend Kaneto Shindo; they as the director and the screenwriter brought life and joy to a new era love story between beauty and the beast. Of course, the beauty of the "beauty" Setsuko Hara had to be convincing to the audience first. As for the Setsuko Hara work from the "wife of militarism" stage, this program did not make any selection. Instead it selected an even earlier film PRIEST OF DARKNESS. The film told the story of a feudal era Edo mob boss who fell under a young bar maid's spell, stressed the lower class' spirit of helping each other. Playing the young barmaid was the 15 year old, not yet famous Setsuko Hara. This film's director was the famous at the time left leaning director Sadao Yamanaka. Other key actors in the film mostly came from the progressive drama troupe "Zenshinza". The entire film's atmosphere was the polar opposite of militarism films. Only, a year after the film was completed, Sadao Yamanaka was called to the battlefield and finally died from illness in Northern China. At the same time, Setsuko Hara started to wave the banner for the Japanese Emperor on the silver screen. 2. TA KUNG PAO, JUNE 2 2016, LIGHT SHADOW PATH LAST YEAR'S CHINESE FILM QUALITY AND QUANTITY According to th 2016 Chinese film industry study report, in 2015 China produced 686 feature films. 320 had theatrical releases, 259 more than in 2014. While the film quantity grew and the box office continued to rise, the question that everyone was concerned with was whether quality was raised. This year, the China Film Association announced the "critics' choice" ten recommended films of 2015. They included MR. SIX, THE DEAD END, THE ASSASSIN, MOUNTAINS MAY DEPART, WOLF TOTEM, 12 CITIZENS, MONSTER HUNT, GET LOST MR. TUMOR, SAVING MR. WU and A FOOL. Among them MONSTER HUNT caused a controversy. Beijing Film Academy professor Huang Shixian criticized that the highest grossing film MONSTER HUNT (and MERMAID) for being absolute disasters within their glamorous exterior and did not represent any Chinese film industry achievement. Professor Huang criticized MONSTER HUNT for its little Daikon imp and male pregnancy. "You can't find another like it in the entire world, what kind of culture is this?" Creatively, MONSTER HUNT's "male pregnancy" was expendable, but MONSTER HUNT made its contributions. Film as an integrated art was not limited to story and screenplay. MONSTER HUNT displayed the national film's high quality in computer generated special effects, which was an important milestone. As for Fang Li's "begging for more shows", Professor Huang also said, "if art films have to beg for their survival, what kind of world is this." Cinema circuits' lack of concern for art films, which was definite in a commercial society. Thus film development has different perspectives, two in general. In the eyes of professionals film is either good or not, in the eyes of film merchants film is either a hit or not. Some films cater to the lowest common denominator, pursue big productions and big stars, lack content, logic and do whatever it takes to succeed. Yet movies with the same idea and approach may not necessarily become hits. The box office success of a film has no sure fire formula to victory, or the inevitability of "survival of the fittest". On the other hand, as the China Film Association critics committee chief Yin Hong pointed out, "Chinese films have never been as rich as it was last year. A random rundown of titles, from last year's WOLF TOTEM, to MOUNTAINS MAY DEPART, MR. SIX, RED AMNESIA, THE ASSASSIN, films that could not possibly enter the market in the past but still had very high artistic quality and strength still made several tenths of millions or even over 100 million at the box office." From an optimistic angle, last year indeed had a group that seemed to be alternative films with decent box office and proved that everyone's taste was rising. Filmmakers should also pay attention to this phenomenon and adjust their production strategy. - TIN LIK [ In Production Now/Soon ] Can : NAM SUN FUN LIN YING Lit : MALE GOD TRAINING CAMP d. Co-presented with Subway Cinema as a part of the 15th New York Asian Film Festival (NYAFF), the inaugural Korean Movie Night New York – Master Series will focus on Director/Producer Lee Joon-ik, a master of Korean historical drama. The program will consist of 6 of Director Lee’s most representative films, with the screenings held June 28 - July 2 at Walter Reade Theater (165 West 65th St.) and SVA Beatrice Theater (333 West 23rd St.). In the past two decades, he has produced, directed, and even appeared in over 20 films, many of which have played key roles in shaping the Korean cinescape. More than any other Korean filmmaker, Lee Joon-ik has focused on telling the stories about the Korean society and its traditions though the format of historical dramas, often with razor-sharp satire and elements of black comedy, skillfully creating fictional stories around historical characters, and also reflecting on Korea’s contemporary politics. While historical drama is one of the staples of Korean cinema, director Lee has been responsible for the genre’s now decade long resurgence with his 2005 hit King And The Clown. Having established himself as a leading master of the genre, he has continued to make historic dramas as his preferred mode of communicating with the audience, innovatively utilizing his art to allow Korean history and culture to be better understood by a growing international audience, and also to generations of young Koreans. About Korean Movie Night New York Korean Movie Night New York (KMN) is redesigned as "Korean Movie Night New York: Premiere Showcase" and “Korean Movie Night New York: Master Series” in 2016.
