MISCELLANEOUS * (2016/05/10) Andrew Lam Man Chung yesterday posted a never before seen FULL STRIKE poster on facebook and criticized people for the con. This poster had two unknown people in VR gear and posing with badminton rackets. However Ronald Cheng Chung Kei was named the star and Lam Man Chung the producer. Ah Chung yesterday said, "At first I didn't know what happened, Cheng Chung Kei even called me. Some people thought that it was a photoshop parody from me, but after investigation we learn that someone want to swindle investors. I believe the film company will handle it." * (2016/05/10) The Don Li Yat Long starred film NOWHERE TO HIDE (NAM GIK TAM SEH DUNG) approached Leung Chai Yan to be its lead actress before it went into production. Later she resigned and Carol Yeung Chi Yiu took the role. The film was originally slated for release on Thursday, but Amy K.'s manager Little Fat Pig yesterday suddenly received the investor's apology announcement email, saying that NOWHERE has halted its release temporarily. However, the email turned its original release year from 2016 to 2012. Li Yat Long has no idea. "Really? I only found out from your call. (Even the release date was wrong.) This matches the film's style." He also revealed that last year the film took only 12 days to complete. He was fully paid but he still has not been able to get in contact with the producer to follow up yet. Director Lau Chun Fai said that the for now he could not reveal any release detail. "There are some problems, but I will tell you later!" * (2016/05/10) The Benny Chan Muk Sing produced, Adrian Kwan Shun Fai directed, Louis Koo Tin Lok and Miriam Yeung Chin Wa starred LITTLE BIG MASTER (NG GOR SIU HAI DIK HAU JEUNG) last year was a critical and commercial hit. Lead actress Yeung Chin Wa two nights ago at the 23rd Beijing College Student Film Festival won the College Student Favorite Actress award. The Guan Hu directed MR. SIX won the committee prize, its star Feng Xiaogang received the Best Actor award. College students voted for their favorite directors, actors and actresses and the awards went to LEFT EAR's director Alec Su (So Yau Peng), MBA PARTNERS's Li Chen and LITTLE BIG MASTER's Yeung Chin Wa. Chin Wa said, "I am very pleased to win this award, I want to thanks students who voted for me. The reason that I am pleased is this award is a huge encouragement. This year's film festival theme is courage, pursuing your dream is very courageous. Every film is every actor's dream, for me crossing over to become an actor was very difficult. To receive everyone's recognition gives me a lot of confidence and encouragement. I am the happiest that this year I got this script. I won the Favorite award absolutely not because of my personal performance. I am the most grateful about getting a good script, a good team, a good director and good and experienced co-stars this year. They created the life influences life Yeung Chin Wa. I am also happy that the Mainland students like Hong Kong films." Chin Wa was also the guest presenter at the film festival closing ceremony and presented Best Actor to MR. SIX's Feng Xiaogang with Yan Danchen. MR. SIX also won the committee prize. Feng Xiaogang said that the excellent performance of an actor could not be separated from the attentive control of the director. He also said that "When an actor wins an award the director practically wins an award". The Chen Jianbin directing debut about the Northwestern farmer saving a mentally deficient homeless person A FOOL received the jury prize; Bai Baike's GO AWAY MR. TUMOR won the Best Film; Best Director went to MOUNTAINS MAY DEPART's Jia Zhangke. The Chen Sicheng directed DETECTIVE CHINATOWN won Best Screenplay. * (2016/05/09) Sounding a lot like Leon Lai Ming, "Lai Ming", boy band Bro5 member Ben Yeung Seung Bun recently worked with Chrissie Chau Sau Na on the film 29+1. They played a couple in the film. Earlier they shot a wrap scene. Ben obviously got the better end of the final night, as in the story he and Sister Na were on an all night date in Lan Kwai Fong at Central. Gregory Wong Chung Hiu and another Bro5 member La Ying came to visit. Ben shared a photo on facebook two nights ago. "Thank you brothers for cheering us on. I didn't say much at the set, but my heart was rolling." Ben even embraced producer Kearen Pang Sau Wai and thanked her for her appreciation. * (2016/05/07) After 4 years Aaron Kwok Fu Sing and Tony Leung Ka Fai returned with the original team to COLD WAR 2 (HONG JIN 2), which will open in July. The film company on May 15 will hold a large scale promotional event Macpherson Stadium and invite all of Hong Kong to challenge the world selfie record. The film company will hold a free screening of COLD WAR for a warm up for everyone, then with actors in the film they will challenge the Guiness record for the most people taking selfies in 3 minutes world record. They will take turns to take selfies in order to break the 105 people selfies in 3 minutes record. Over thousands of people will not only be able to witness this event in person but also have a chance to take photos with the superstars. Sing Sing and Leung Ka Fai earlier shot videos to promote the event. * (2016/05/07) Andy Lau Tak Wa has been busy with the film SHOCK WAVE (CHAK DAN JUEN GA). Yesterday although he did not have to appear on screen, Wa Jai instead of taking time off appeared on the set as the producer and personally gave a "safety" demonstration of explosion scenes with director Herman Yau Lai To to visiting reporters. Wa Jai even turned into the "bomb squad expert". He not only explained how to defuse a bomb but also battled wits with villain Jiang Wu. Wa Jai was not all talk as he convincingly demonstrated how to defuse a bomb in high speed. Wa Jai worked on a film about bombs as an actor and a producer. The film had many explosion scenes. The indoor glass explosion scene was very realistic. According to the director, for the result to be without any mishap and requiring only one take, the preparation took over two hours. The amount and the location of the explosives had to be very accurate. Wa Jai also arrived on the set early to study this explosion scene with the director. This explosion scene was completed very smoothly. Later, Wa Jai who played the bomb expert in the film revealed that in the film the Cross Harbor Tunnel will be blown up. He said, "Because we couldn't get into the tunnel to shoot, we built a 1:1 scale tunnel that we will blow up in the end." Wa Jai said, "In the film I will go undercover and work with Jiang Wu on a lot of explosion, fight and gun fight scenes. Jiang Wu will play a famous heavyweight wanted criminal. My assignment is to capture him. Jiang Wu is a good co-star. (Will the explosion scenes in the film be dangerous?) They will have certain levels of danger, but walking can be dangerous too. Pray for me!" In order to play this character, Wa Jai already trained with some bomb teams for awhile. * (2016/05/06) Peter Lam Kin Ngok's Media Asia has always seen the importance of the Korean market. Two years ago it worked with the Korean entertainment company SM and brought SM's top groups like Super Junior, EXO and Girls' Generation to the Greater Chinese region, but their alliance ended at the end of last year. Media Asia early this year opened its open Media Asia Seoul entertainment, not only opening a management department there but also investing on television series and film productions. Media Asia has already signed Ha Ji-Won, Shin Min-A, and Ji Jin-Hee, reportedly Lee Byung-Hun and Choi Si-Won are in negotiation as well. Lam Kin Ngok reportedly made high priced hiring with a group of strong high executives there. The artists themselves too wanted to break into the Mainland market and hoped to be able to make some big movies that will head to overseas markets. Thus they were willing to sign their greater Chinese region management contracts with Media Asia. John Woo (Ng Yu Sum)'s film MANHUNT will star Lee Byung-Hun and Ha Ji-Won. Media Asia at the same time hoped to start a training class there to sign a group of Korean and greater Chinese region new comers with potential then put them through famous Korean instructors' cultivation for an even fuller future company development and fighting for even greater control of artists. On the other hand, Media Asia would also work closer with production teams there on Korean series and films, arrange for its Chinese, Hong Kong and Taiwan artists to participate and open the Korean market for its artists. * (2016/05/06) Artists Chrissie Chau Sau Na and Kathy Yuen (Tong Yi) in the early morning worked on their new film 29+1's car crash in Lan Kwai Fong. In the story Chau Sau Na and Tong Yi argued, Tong Yi ran into the road in a rage and ran into a car! Although during the shoot Tong Yi was only performing the reaction from being hit, she was still very realistic and professional as she faceplanted onto the padding. Chau Sau Na screamed and looked frightened. Tong Yi was not working on her first car crash so she knew to protect her neck and back. She was also mentally prepared so she was done after five or six takes. She said, "I wasn't hurt, the team took great care of me. After each dive I had ten people to help me up!" Chau Sau Na said, "My heart jumped out of my heart! Although I didn't really see a car hit her, I felt the impact from seeing her fall!" She also said that during the shoot the most difficult was to control her emotions and act at the same time! * (2016/05/06) Kiko O Ka Ki, Milla Ching Chi Yu and Hingis Huang (Wong Chin Yu) yesterday worked on the film YUN BUT JU DIK NGAN LUI (TEARS THAT CANNOT BE HELD BACK). The trio said that in the film they played gym receptionists. In heavy make up, Ching Chi Yu pointed out that her character was innocent so she did not have any sexy and intimate scene. Pseudo model Rika Lau Yin Nei participated in ViuTV's G-1 FIGHT CLUB and took a pounding on her face from Winkie Lai Mei Yin. Earlier she announced that she would retire from show business and immediately she was rumored to have hooked up with a Mainland rich kid. Speaking of Rika finding a millionaire boyfriend, Ching Chi Yu said that years ago she had dinner with him and still had facebook contact. O Ka Ki chimed in, "Success isn't about having a million or not, one buck boyfriend is also a success. The most important is loving you. (Do you feel that she rose to fame with one fight?) I get bruised easily, so I am more careful and never think about participating. In addition I have tried to be in the ring on a program and spent a month to recover. Now I watch myself even more." Ching Chi Yu also said that she had no interest in participating. * (2016/05/05) Janice Man Wing Shan worked with Shawn Yue Man Lok and Max Zhang Jin recently on the new film THE BRINK (KONG SAU). Becoming an action actress since HELIOS (CHET DOH), JM took more and more risks but yesterday when she worked on a building jump she was still a little scared. When she started testing her marks she screamed in fright in mid air. She was so scared that she closed her eyes and did not dare to look down. The stunt double was getting ready on the set, but JM finally finished the stunt herself and in just one take with a perfect landing! Although it was not her first action scene, it was her first jump from above. Thus JM was very nervous when she tested her marks. The director also went easy on her. In the end she was only asked to land fast from the second floor, she did it in one take and the director accepted it. However her car crash took 8 tries. For the raining effect the water truck kept spraying water. JM was drenched in two hours, but when she took her break she was anxious to watch the playback. The crew kept drying JM as they were afraid that she would catch a cold after getting wet. * (2016/05/05) BOUNTY HUNTERS is the first Chinese film that Korean star Lee Min-Ho participated in and also the first film in which he worked with Chinese actors. Playing a bounty hunter in the film, Lee Min-Ho was known across the city. The film had car chases, gang fights, 8 foot jump, Lee Min-Ho stated that his life risking performance was the best gift to thank his Hong Kong and Mainland fans for their love and support. Bounty hunters get paid to take care of other people's problems! Lee Min-Ho sold his skills and Wallace Chung Han Leung sold his schemes. Under the leader Tiffany Tang Yan they had many thrilling action scenes in order to find out the mastermind behind a hotel explosion plot. In the stills, Lee Min-Ho not only had a baton to fight but also kicked to fend off the enemies; he was also back to back with Tang Yan in preparation for the impending fight. Lee Min-Ho said, "In the film I played a bodyguard, by chance I became a bounty hunter so I had to be prepared before hand for the fights. The action director was very demanding, the jumps and the landings both needed to be strong, powerful yet professional. They also had to be cool!" Fellow bounty hunter Karena Ng Chin Yu in the film played a computer hacker who could not leave her computer. Louis Fan Siu Wong in a departure from his usual rough kung fu image played a hunter butler who was strong yet attentive. Jeremy Xu (Tsui Ching Hei)'s look was very different, with odd and cool orange hair as he battled brains and brawn with the five bounty hunters. [ BLAH OF THE WEEK ] Columns, Reviews, Interviews 1. APPLE DAILY, MAY 11 2016, FAILED MAN THE WORLD OF ONE In the age without the internet, we had a tribe of people who did not like to participate in sports, did not enjoy the sun too much, not good looking, did not like to talk, had difficulty communicating with others as they would begin to sweat nervously after only a few words; they might even had to urge to go to the bathroom. Thus they did not participate in anything that had more than three people. They spent most of their time hiding in a corner of their home or in their rooms, but when they were alone they were gods. They would always been obsessed with one type or several types of the time that extended from this interested. Their level of obsession would begin with starter exploration, worshipping certain masters to self study, explore and research. After finding the way they preferred they would begin to train day and night without any stop, also all the time in a day was not enough. Aside from eating and sleeping they would use all their time to do this thing. Finally when they felt that they have achieved something, they would want to see other masters' abilities and levels to test their own mantle! If they knew that they had abilities, they would deliberately be a little more low key. They would secretly snicker at those who had none but pretended to have something, thinking that if someone gave them a push they would easily defeat them. Since no one forced me, I absolutely would not act! Thus most of the time they never acted but inside they would ridicule those poseurs! Then in order to prepare for the possible chance next time, they would go back and train some more! Inside they would have an endless surge, the thinking of martial artists, but outside they were still ordinary yet impotent losers! Actually they each had their own world! The More Extreme The More Successful Because of the internet, the world has changed a lot. Yet the world now was much easier to get in touch with than in my age! Thus for several levels growth, they might look different but inside remain the same. Now various online forums have become the world where they gather. In the internet age the world of one became even wider and larger. Because with the protection screen that shielded them from facing people, the masters even with just a fake name could walk the earth. This world had hidden warriors who only receive but did not speak, as well as information personnel that specialized in spreading information; gossips who came to watch and righteous people everyone respected; troublemakers and of course different masters of that topic! Low to mid level loved to show off, without any management or training they still hoped to be propped up. Thus their products were mixed yet they still supported a balance in the world. Real masters loved high profile amid low profile. On a scheduled basis they would announce the results of their training and super products to charm everyone with. They often rarely spoke, they were sensible, fair, sometimes they hit the nail right on the head and sometimes they were arrogant and mean, sometimes they were cold and preferred to be alone. They liked to let everyone speak first, in the end they would come to collect their remains or make conclusions! Then they would suddenly leave without any trace at all! Masters always had their own school of thought, the more extreme and subjective they were the more significant their personalities were, they were also more successful! At my age those people had no name, they were all described in a word garbage. They also did not have existing place of gathering. For them finding a companion or opponent was not easy at all! Yet now these people have a name, they are otaku and Poison L! These names came from a lack of understanding and ridicule, but you can very easily discover that most of the most successful people in society were once Poison L. The more focused, the more poisonous and the most garbage they were the more chances they had at success! As long as they were able to find their own world! Have you found your own world yet?! - Derek Kwok Chi Kin JOURNEY TO THE WEST 1.2 Billion Box Office Director, Figure Collector 2. APPLE DAILY, MAY 10 2016, SI AND NONSENSE ON HOLIDAY WITH "THE BISHOP" AND "THE COMRADE" I admit, when I first accepted the invitation from the TRAVEL WITH RIVALS team I did it mostly out of malicious nosiness. I wanted to see how "JC" Zac Koo (Ko Ho Ching) really is, I also was truly curious about what absurdity would occur when he and I went on holiday together. At the same time I also prepared several beer bottles to blast him with at any time. At the meeting a week before departure, the directing team through my assistant asked about location and time. They asked if I would mind meeting at Mr. Koo's office. I replied without any hesitation, "Great! Let's go!" They of course praised me on how easy going and understanding I was, but I must again admit that this directness actually only came from an alternative self amusement (and biased) mentality. What would the office of Bishop Koo be like? I very much looked forward to what kind of hilarious scene would open my e yes. Then on the day of the meeting, I stepped into his office and I was drastically disappointed. It did not have the altar like I imagine, no thousand believers praying in a group, it was only a very ordinary rehearsal room and a rather normal looking Ko Ho Ching. Boo! Come on! There is nothing funny! Refund! Seemingly Polar Opposites Of Society As Mr. Koo said, actually we knew each other from before. Back then I just started in the business, occasionally I made movies. Once I took a guest starring role and played sexy taxi driver (sweat), he was the lover I had scheduled "dates" with at the gas station. Looking back now this film team truly had a psychic sense of humor. At the time he was still very "normal", I too was very "normal". Then under this "normal" condition we became friends for a year. After that we lost touch without any reason, then I started to see his various "JC comments" online while I came out of the closet on my end. He became "Bishop Koo" while I became "Comrade Singer" Ho Wan Si. Without any actual conflict before, we seemed to head toward polar opposites of society and became "rivals" who were "certain" not to get along. Ireland was chosen, according to the program screen writer, because it was the first nation to vote for same sex marriage but at the same time it was also a very religious place. Almost 80% of the entire population were Christians. In the 2015 same sex marriage vote, 62.1% voted "yes". Among age 16 to 34 the ratio even reached 84%. Even in the more conservative age group (55 and above) the support rate was almost 50%. Despite such polar opposite values, the people there were able to accept the result of this vote civilly. Do they have anything that we can learn from? In Hong Kong, almost any Christina is very instinctively against equal rights for homosexuals. When homosexuals hear Christianity they would very naturally turn hostile. This hostile situation under many different values like political, racial or generational relationships would often appear as well. In the end either because the Hong Kong general public is still rookie in expressing opinions or because we do not excel in communicating with others to begin with, whenever we have differences in our stance we do not know how to get along with each other. Thus we can only face it from a either you or me critical angle or shutting ourselves in? Actually, the world can use another way to operate. In Ireland (or Northern Europe where I went later), the word "politics" is not taboo. It is not something that only a specific group of people would come in contact with, but something that every family would discuss at the dinner table everyday. The most memorable to me is the enthusiasm and maturity that young people had for these topics. Selena's sheepherding family or later when I went to Tone's home in Norway, the children were only in their teens and 20s but they were already able to maturely discuss any major events with their parents. Even though they disagreed they were still able to discuss peacefully. This perhaps was credited to excellent education and teaching by example. Praying For Me All Day This "Rivals" travel progressed very interestingly. From my mysterious loss of voice before departure and unable to speak at all with Ko Ho Ching, to later when my wallet was stole and I was stuck in Ireland as he prayed for me like mad. From the beginning, we were still very courteous on the surface but secretly ridiculing the others' behavior with bias. Later although the differences still remained, we have developed to being able to joking around without any taboo in front of the other. Later I realized that actually Ko Ho Ching, aside from being quite a bother from praying for me all day, was a very ordinary HK guy and not hard to get along with at all. We constantly would let our various identities outside influenced our definition of a certain person (often we do not know these people). Whether this person is good or bad, when he and I are different he mostly likely is not good. Yet actually how many in the world are completely good or bad? Most of us are ordinary people who are neither especially holy nor especially bad. We have different values, different beliefs, but taking away those differences in the end the happiness that we pursue, our happiness, anger, sorrow and joy are pretty much the same. TRAVEL WITH RIVALS behind the peanut shell that the program effect requires actually should have even more. Indeed it is a social experiment, and a certain social snapshot. The sharpest spear and the strongest shield cannot possibly co-exist, why not consider that we perhaps do not have to choose only between that spear and that shield? - Denise Ho Wan Si A Wild Mushroom, A Free Person Who Lives On the Fridges of Show Business Started with Music, but Accidentally Through Creativity and Life See The possibilities of life. "Hope" and "Justice" Are My Beliefs 3. TA KUNG PAO, MAY 6 2016, FILM AND TELEVISION MARKET TREND CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR IS UNSTOPPABLE Last week the Hollywood super blockbuster CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR arrived and immediately turned around the fading box office conditions of the previous week, as total box office reached HK$ 58.15 million, 23% more than the week before; CAPTAIN made HK$ 50.92 million and of course won the top box office spot with 87% of the total box office; the film will open this week in the U.S. Going into its sixth week, ZOOTOPIA made HK$ 1.18 million in second place. Over six weeks it made HK$ 49.75 million; this week's release BOOK OF LOVE came in third with its advanced screening take of HK$ 820,000. We shall open how it does when it opens this week. The horror film THE BOY made HK$ 800,000 in fourth place, over two weeks it made HK$ 1.93 million; TRIVISA (SHU DAI JIU FUNG) made HK$ 630,000 in fifth place, over four weeks it made HK$ 8.86 million. As for the other two new films, the Korean film COLLECTIVE INVENTION made HK$ 71,000 in twenty first place; another even more alternative Turkish film MUSTANG made HK$ 46,000 in twenty sixth place. In addition, with its video release last week the Hong Kong Film Award winning, Philip Yung Tsz Kwong directed PORT OF CALL (DAP HUET CHUM MUI) continued its second run. It landed in seventh place with HK$ 410,000. With last year's box office it made HK$ 9.01 million. Although its video has already been released, the second run is the director's extended version and thus does not lack supporters. Seemingly this week it will still have room to grow. In the Mainland, BOOK OF LOVE opened last week with 354.07 million RMB in firth place. Seeming the team of Xie Xiaolu, Tang Wei and Wu Xiubo truly has draw. Opening at the end of this month in Hong Kong, the animated film JUNGLE BOOK made 211.69 million RMB in second place. Over three weeks it made 855.43 million RMB; opened the week before, YESTERDAY ONCE MORE made 65.58 million RMB in third place. Over two weeks it made 165.11 million RMB; the new release thriller PHANTOM OF THE THEATRE made 52.11 million RMB in fourth place. The film was Manfred Wong (Man Jun) produced and written, Raymond Yip Wai Man directed, Ruby Lin, Tony Yang, and Simon Yam Tat Wa starred and opened in an average showing. Korean director Jang Tae-Yoo's Mainland film MBA PARTNERS opened in fifth place with 51.93 million RMB and starred Yao Chen, Tiffany Tang Yan, Hao Lei, Li Chen, Wang Yibo and Aaron Kwok Fu Sing. As for other new releases, the Wong Kar Wai produced, Zou Jingzhi written, Huo Jianqi directed XUAN ZANG made 18.14 million RMB in seventh place. The Huang Xiaoming and Tong Chun Yip starred with a strong cast and crew, but the film's box office was disappointing; the other three were Mainland animated films, FROG STORY made 4.76 million RMB in eleventh place, ALIBABA 2 SOLOMON SEAL made 2.69 million RMB in twelfth place, MA XIAOLE AND HIS TOYS made 2.61 million RMB in fourteenth. - LAM KAM BO 4. TA KUNG PAO, MAY 5 2016, ASIAN FILMS BOOK OF LOVE: ROMANCES STARTS WITH THE PEN Director Xue Xiaolu's film three years ago, FINDING MR. RIGHT, used a love story in a foreign land to create a box office record. She used a foreign land story background to make a sense of life that has been rare among recent Mainland modern romantic films. Three years later her new film BOOK OF LOVE obviously increased its production scale due to the success of its predecessor. Production locations were all over Europe, Asia and America like London, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Vancouver and Macau. The story that the original team interpreted was not a continuation of the previous film but a much more complicated modern city fairy tale. - HUNG KWONG BOOK OF LOVE basically was two stories in parallel. On one hand Wu Xiubo was a real estate agent in the U.S. He felt baffled with his clients and finally found himself again; on the other hand Tang Wei played a Macau casino public relations worker who wandered in the casino all day. In the end, both stories were about the struggles between real life and ideals. A Trend Connects Heaven And Earth, North And South Wu Xiubo's character has been studying in the U.S. since childhood. He had his heart set on learning English and joining the mainstream society. Finally after receiving a professional degree at the University, his job was a real estate agent with primarily Chinese clients. At night he slept inside mansions that were on the market. Normally he would be between many foreign girlfriends and never was willing to settle down. Then he ran into an old Chinese couple who planned to sell their mansion. While trying to gain their trust he slowly changed as well. The Tang Wei played casino PR after her father brought her to this Eastern casino fell under its spell. She lived off tips from gamblers, but she became addicted to gambling herself. In the end she could not even pay her rent and had to stay with her late father's girlfriend. She even ambitiously loaned money to a calculating former classmate for a wager and ended up owing a high interest loan. She was forced to accept the "invitation" of a big time casino client to go to Las Vegas...... Originally they did not intersect, as they lived their lives that were separated by Heaven and Earth, North and South. The screen writers connected them together with the book 84 CHARING CROSS. The protagonists ran into something unpleasant in order to get this book, thus they sent the book along with emotional letters to 84 Charing Corss. In the end they wonderfully received each other's letter and by chance they began to write to each other and slowly developed into close friends. During the writing process, they had completely different images from their actual lives. One was a professor and the other became a student. Yet they were similar with their problems in life. Those letters finally brought them together. If memory serves, such a connection between a couple through letter writing has not been used in Chinese films before. In comparison to the "strangers fall in love through letters" stories of the past, LOVE OF BOOK might be the closest to a fairy tale. First nowadays who would still use actual letters to communicate (thus everything started with a note attached to the book)? As early as the end of the last century, the protagonists in these types of stories have already begun to communicate with electronic mail or other electronic communication means. The film probably was the most successful in shaping the two protagonists. Although they had little flaws like chasing after money and success, they had their bottom lines. The Tang Wei played casino PR lingered in the land of sights and sounds but never used her beauty to climb up. Rare as that was, it was still within credible logic. The Wu Xiubo played real estate agent originally planned to swindle the old couple into selling their home, then demolishing and rebuilding it for a profit. Finally he turned into sincerely helping the old folks. Such traces of change actually were close to many Hollywood film ideas. The leads who were after fame and fortune finally chose human concerns. BOOK OF LOVE more or less lightly ridiculed the Chinese who flocked to buy property and study overseas as well. Short On The Book Where the entire film could do better was its use of the book 84 CHARING CROSS. This book came from letters from an American writer and an English bookstore owner/clerk. The book was the center of their letters. In the film, the protagonists began writing each other about this book. The writer and the director also very obviously hinted that discussing art and literature was one of their topics. At least Tang Wei's character went from avoiding books due to gambling to buying books on her own. Yet aside from CHARING, the film did not put any actual books, whether foreign or Chinese, into the story. They could only talk about the Tang and Song Dynasty poems that they had to recite in their childhood. They even gave the impression that they were avoiding the subject, like they were writing to introduce the bookstore. They were always talking about the bookstore's decoration, the owners' pets, instead of talking about what books were there, how the owners chose the books. As for the key idea that this story was established on, the writers and director's trick of opening up the shop owner opening up 84 CHARING CROSS again in real life might likely end up in court due to privacy issues. The writers and director who grew up in European and American cultures might not have thought of this idea. This point made this city fairy tale that was rather foreign and more or less surreal unknowingly showed its Chinese creator background. 5. TA KUNG PAO, MAY 5 2016, LIGHT SHADOW PATH BRAND NAME SCREEN WRITERS Last month at a forum titled "The road of brand name screen writers", the speaker mentioned the concept of "brand name screen writers" that actually mixed together the definition of screen writers and producers for screen writers to enjoy the privileges of producers. "Brand name screen writers" should probably refer to famous screen writers. Let us take a look at the speaker's definition of a "brand name screen writer". Du Hongjun mentioned that "screen writer" had six basic characteristics: 1. excels in genre creation; 2. original creation ability; 3. spirit of the contract; 4. has market guarantee; 5. fans inside and outside the industry; 6. has screen writer workshop or screen writing company. This analysis is no different from the general understanding. Without market guarantee, you cannot possibly be famous from writing. Without spirit of the contract you cannot possibly have fans inside and outside the industry. Of course, only famous screen writers would have their own companies. Mr. Du even felt that "brand name screen writers" can be even more multifaceted in business. They can be producers, directors and other posts. The film release company may not agree with this because the above "brand name screen writer" characteristics do not include producers and directors' areas. In other words, if "brand name screen writers" have to play these two roles, they not only have to meet the criteria of "brand name screen writers" but also have even deeper understanding of the market and directing technique. A lawyer at the forum pointed out that screen writers can "finish a 2,000 to 3,000 word story summary before registering for copyright." When a part of the creation is formed and investors are prepared to enter the picture, the work is sent to the China International Copyright Protection Center's "Partially Completed Product" copyright reservation service. When other joint writers join, the splitting of the rights will be convenient. This lawyer does not understand the screen writing job is made for hire. Whatever the release company buys is copyright. After paying money it can find people to create together. Only the original creator's salary may be higher. What screen writers have to protect is not "partially completed" copyrights, but different media copyrights. Now already popular in Hong Kong is only selling film rights, the screen writers still have the same concept's television and other media rights. Someone also mentioned at the forum that screen writers "as long as they have originally created ideas and plan, when the project operation succeeds they should get some of the profit." They are probably referring to bonus. Currently most producers get bonuses, but screen writers seem to get them in rare cases. If screen writers have original creation and plan, they can play the role of producers but drift further and further away from the screen writer territory. Some capital partners said that the criteria for them to invest in an individual was "to have his or her own specialty, able to tell a story, design characters, a nose for business is even better". According to those conditions, they were actually looking for a screen writer and a producer. Thus the "brand name screen writers" they were talking about were actually "producer screen writers". - TIN LIK [ In Production Now/Soon ] SISTERHOOD Can : Gwut Mui Lit : Massage Girls d. Opening February 12 2016 at the Berlin Film Festival Opening April 7 2016 Trailer : https://youtu.be/ZsE97uwjkEo [ BERLIN INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL ] Hong Kong, summer 1997: while preparations are underway for the handover of the British Crown Colony to China, the underworld finds that it too must adapt to profound changes. With the opening of the border to China, new codes and mores make their way into the world of the triads – and those who don’t adjust their business models have already lost. A genre film from Hong Kong that chooses to set its story during those years of turmoil is tantamount to a double swan song. For these political changes also effectively spelled the end of an independent Hong Kong cinema that was admired across Asia. One of the few directors who has continued to defend and develop the genre is Johnnie To. By producing TRIVISA, To is flying the flag for three up-and-coming directors who tell the stories of three legendary gangsters of the period. This is not an anthology film, but rather an overlapping story of men who become victims of their own legends. As chance brings them all together one day in the same restaurant on the Chinese side of the border, rumours swirl that the three are planning a joint coup. In elegant fashion, hype and hubris lead to their downfall. (Christoph Terhechte) PORT OF CALL Rating : III Length : 120 mins. Opening April 6 2015 at the Hong Kong International Film Festival Opening December 3 2015 Trailer: http://youtu.be/8WlHzaSeTus [ HONG KONG INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL ] A teenage prostitute is murdered; her body cut up and flushed down the toilet, and her severed head thrown into Victoria Harbor. Director Philip Yung chooses to focus not on the crime or the investigation, but on the dead girl and her family, the cop and his family, and the killer who is without a family. The result is a genre-bender that progresses as it digresses, an atmospheric mosaic of human lives and actions that invariably get complicated, out of order and beyond reason, and with the characters firmly grounded in gritty and unforgiving reality. The intent of the Premiere Showcase is to provide audiences and film critics with a special preview screenings of the latest Korean hits, in advance of their U.S. releases. “It has been truly wonderful to see how Korean Movie Night New York has grown over the years, expanding the audience for Korean cinema in New York City and beyond. With the Premiere Showcase, we hope to give Korean film fans a unique opportunity to be among the first to see the latest blockbusters, right after they are being released in Korea,” says OH Seung-je, Director of Korean Cultural Center in New York. The series’ first film is PHANTOM DETECTIVE, the latest genre effort from director JO Sung-hee, a talented independent filmmaker (post-apocalyptic mystery horror END OF ANIMAL (2010), and Cannes prize-winning short DON’T STEP PUT OF THE HOUSE (2008)), who made a successful transition to commercial filmmaking with period-set fantasy melodrama A WAREWOLF BOY (2010), which earned him Best New Director award at Paeksang Arts Awards in Korea. The screening will take place at IFC Center, 323 Ave of the Americas. All events are free admission, first come, first served.
