MISCELLANEOUS * (2016/05/04) Chrissie Chau Sau Na earlier worked with Eric Kot Man Fai at Central's Soho on the film adaptation of the play 29+1. Back then the Kearen Pang Sau Wai written and directed play was a commercial and critical hit and had many repeated runs. Chrissie in the film also had to perform from the beginning to the end, which to her was truly a huge challenge. Although she has been working on movies in recent years, she still lacked a representative film that recognized her acting. Chrissie did not relax at all in search for a breakthrough, on the set she appeared to be deep in thought and concentration for the long run. Even when the team took breaks she remained very anxious. Off camera she had little exchange with Kot Man Fai. For them to relax and get into character, the team during the shoot played Japanese singer Toshinobu Kubota's 90s hit LA LA LA LOVE SONG. Kot Man Fai began to move to the music, drastically different from Chrissie's anxious state. Playing a taxi driver, Kot Man Fai was a surprise guest star. To keep the mystery on his character he never appeared during the film promotion. The shoot location was also a Mid Level street with few people, everything was kept very low key. * (2016/05/04) Myolie Wu Hung Yi yesterday attended a nail polish event, after which she had to rush to Suzhou for the film NGOR WAI CHEH KONG (CRAZY FOR CARS). She will have to be away from her husband for a month. Will her husband visit? Hung Yi said, "He has to work too, maybe he will come in between. Because my husband is complaining about all my jobs, after the shoot I will take a break. (Will you rest until you have a baby?) I don't know. After marriage my state of mind changed. I want to give more time to my family and be responsible, so I have to properly adjust. A successful woman is like this. (Do you feel you are successful?) Not yet, I am still working on it." How does her husband complain? Hung Yi said, "He would say I should cook another meal for him, or to embrace a little longer. Because we haven't been able to see each other for a long time, I don't want to go too far to work for a long time." As for a reality show with her husband, Hung Yi joked that her husband's steamed winter melon (Putonghua) was not so good. In addition he is an outsider so they would not make one. * (2016/05/04) The film YUN BUT JU DIK NGAN LUI (TEARS THAT CANNOT BE HELD BACK) yesterday started production with new actors. Roy Chow Wing Hung and his current girlfriend Cherie Wong Chin Wing. Chow Wing Hung said that he and the film's executive producer Hayden Leung Yik Nam were forming an entertaining company, thus he was not avoiding on screen performance due to his bad image. He still would make movies when he had the chance, but now he is focusing on the company's behind the scene production. K-Chek would also participate in the film and play a villain. Former girlfriend Shiga Lin Si Nga admitted that she broke up for the 20th time. K-Chek said that they were both busy so they had little contact, he knew that her breakup brought up the past and she had negative press. He hoped that they would all just pass and he would wish her well and pray for her broken heart to be healed soon. As for 20 former boyfriends, K-Chek remained protective. "I don't feel that she had the experience of having so many boyfriends, some were just rumors!" Whenever she had any romantic problems, their intimate photo would be posted. K-Chek helplessly said, "It's a little awkward, I hope everyone would forget quickly!" As for criticism of Shiga as "HK Woman" and "Fake ABC", K-Chek said that she like other girls who went to international schools would mix in English with her Chinese. She was like that normally. * (2016/05/02) Carina Lau Ka Ling, Cissy Wang, Mark Lui Chung Tak and his wife were among the guests at the Cultural Museum's art exhibit charity night. Ka LIng revealed that her husband was still working on THE FERRYMAN (BAN DOH YUN), after which he will work on PARIS RAIDERS (AU JAU GUNG LEUK). Originally he planned to rest for several months, but now he is still busy with at work. Ka Ling said that she has collected modern paintings, the goal of which was not waiting for their values to rise but the stories behind the painters made the artwork even more charming. Aside from paintings she also collected sculptures and antique accessories. Someone suggested for Ka Ling to hold an exhibit. She said, "I can, but I have to have enough first. I came to Hong Kong in the 80s, bought a lot of clothes and items that recorded my story. I could share them with everyone." Ka Ling admitted that she has been in the business for 33 years and already have several warehouses worth of personal items. She said, "Mainly I have a lot of clothes and evening gowns, because they are too pretty to throw away. I have fewer costumes, I only 'robbed' several Chinese dresses, including costumes from 2046 and DAYS OF BEING WILD. Because I was familiar with art director (William) Chang Suk Ping I was able to 'rob' him." Speaking of Tony Leung Chiu Wai having to work on a movie in Europe, Ka Ling said that her husband was still working on THE FERRYMAN in Shanghai. After that he will go to Europe for EUROPE RAIDERS. She said, "Originally he thought about taking several months off, but he is still working on a movie. I have visited him in Shanghai. He is OK." She could visit Wai Jai again in Europe and shop. Ka Ling joked, "I can consider that, but I don't want to disturb him too much. I want him to focus on making the movie." * (2016/05/02) Radio and Television Hong Kong 31's morning information program THIS MORNING this morning aired a "Talk Style Breakfast" segment. Host Cuson Law Kai Sun invited Wong Jing and cooked a bowl of won ton noodles for breakfast. They ate and talked about his view on Hong Kong films. The Hong Kong Film Award Best Film went to TEN YEARS this year and led to controversy. Media Asia boss Peter Lam Kin Ngok compared it to won ton noodle and said that TEN YEARS' award was like a won ton noodle shop becoming the best restaurant in Hong Kong, not everyone would be convinced. Wong Jing felt that the comparison was not appropriate. "The Hong Kong Film Award is just a game, you can just laugh at the reward and move on. No one needs to mind too much." Speaking of domestic films, he compared it to the Meal A, B, and C breakfast in front of him. He said that in the past Hong Kong film mixed together A, B and C meals together, each was wonderful on its own. Now domestic films was left with only a slice of bread, monotonous and bland. Filmmakers had a very hard time to "work". He described the film industry as very cruel. "When no one approaches you or your film can't make money you have to retreat. Yet if your work is good, even when you are 70 plenty of people would still approach you or even force you to make movies. You don't make the call." Wong Jing has always been daring with his words. Earlier his comment of "Young people have to be able to afford a home to be called successful" received a lot of online criticism. When asked about the Lunar New Year boycott of his new film, he frowned and said, "Don't talk about that, I don't want to say any more. I don't want to encourage them so they would become cockier and cockier. What else can they say? They haven't succeeded in anything. I don't want anyone to start trouble and affect everyone's lives again." He stressed that he had no political ideology, and he did not know any government official. * (2016/05/02) The Dior Cheng Yi Kin, Jordan Chan Siu Chun, Michael Tse Tin Wa, Chin Ka Lok and Jerry Lamb Hiu Fung starred YOUNG AND DANGEROUS (GOO WAT JAI) film series remained a classic today. Recently the original cast, director Andrew Lau Wai Keung, producer Manfred Wong (Man Jun) were rumored to begin production on YOUNG AND DANGEROUS again in the Mainland. Yesterday Lau Wai Keung and Man Jun issued a statement to deny the matter. "The YOUNG AND DANGEROUS series was Lau Wai Keung, Man Jun and the leads' beautiful memory, which we cherished very much. Recently a company under the guise of remaking YOUNG AND DANGEROUS issued the related production team Power Point presentation, which showed Lau Wai Keung as the chief director, Man Jun as the chief producer. As far as we know we have not been contacted about participating in this project. Currently our schedules are full as well and have no plan to remake YOUNG AND DANGEROUS. To avoid colleagues being misdirected, we must strictly state that we have nothing to do with this film and reserve all rights to pursue legal action!" * (2016/04/29) Dayo Wong Tze Wah would work with Fala Chen on a play. At the same time Tze Wah and Stephen Shiu Jr. will work together on a Hong Kong comedy DUNG DUK DUT GUNG (STAND UP SPECIAL AGENT) with his YOU'RE HIRED co-star Charmaine Sheh Si Man. In the film Tze Wah will play a British special agent who was abandoned in Hong Kong after 97, a portrait of Hong Kong people after the 97 Hand Over. After finishing his play with Fala in July will rest for two months then work on his new film in September. This time he will write and star with a new director, Johnnie To Kei Fung's assistant director Tse Chun. Tze Wah had success on the stage but was known as "box office poison" in film. His directed and starred FIGHTING TO SURVIVE only made HK$ 110,000. Stephen Shiu Jr. however had other ideas. "I am confident. He hasn't been on television for over a decade, the audience wouldn't mind paying. The kids who grew up watching Tze Wah are grown, they are a new consumer group." He revealed that he really wanted to make a Hong Kong comedy. Only a few domestic comedy actors remained. Ah Sheh demanded to work with Tze Wah by name because earlier when they worked together on HIRED they had great chemistry. In DUNG Tze Wah originally was a top British special agent, but after the 97 Hand Over he "lost his identity" and became an orphan in Hong Kong. He could only rely on himself and open a private investigation agency. One day a mob boss' wife Sheh Si Man was released from prison and went to Tze Wah for revenge. They later teamed up to investigate the "real emotion drug", which made people show their beastly side. They even discovered the giant conspiracy behind the drug production. The story sounded like the animated film ZOOTOPIA, which Tze Wah provided his voice to. * (2016/04/29) Former Miss Hong Kong Kate Tsui Tsz Shan in the film BUDDY COPS (YING GAING YING DAI) broke through her pretty girl image as she played a buck tooth ugly woman without any make up. The most outstanding part of her costume were buck teeth that scared off even King Kong. She said, "They were custom made. They were pretty hard to talk with, as I was constantly lisping. However that was another funny part. The most difficult was they often flew out while I was speaking. The team used some denture cream but it had some after taste. I thought of using chewing gum. Although it sounded a little gross, it was better than the after taste." In the film she was paired with King Kong and had a peck on the cheek. However King Kong did not get to enjoy it. She said, "King Kong said that at first when he found out he was paired with me he thought he was getting lucky, when he saw my buck teeth he said they were hardcore! He couldn't take them! Haha!" * (2016/04/28) Ronald Cheng Chung Kei and his wife Sammie Yu Sze Man attended the film CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR's Hong Kong premiere, as did Philip Keung Ho Man and his wife Kam Wai Ying. Earlier Keung Ho Man got into shape for his new film SHOCK WAVE (CHAK DAN JUEN GA) with Andy Lau Tak Wa. He kept training so he would not pale in comparison but he kept his diet normal. * (2016/04/28) Three years ago new female director Xue Xiaolu with Tang Wei and Wu Xiubo crated a box office and word of mouth hit FINDING MR. RIGHT. Now the original team reunited for BOOK OF LOVE. This time the story was drastically different from the last, as a love letter spread a relationship to Macau, Hong Kong, Beijing, Chongqing, Vancouver, Los Angeles, Las Vegas and London. The film only passed by Seattle. Tang Wei pointed out that this time she and Wu Xiubo basically did not have any scene together. The most intimate scene was just a hug. Wu Xiubo joked that this was a romance of abstinence. Already Tang Wei is already over five months pregnant, she has not stopped working since she learned about her pregnancy as she continued to promote. In addition she was energetic and agile, not as clumsy as the average pregnant ladies. Speaking of the production, Wu Xiubo said a female screen writer and director from a female perspective and angle told the difference of a home in this story. Last time he played a divorced doctor, this time he worked as a real estate agent in Los Angeles. Tang Wei was no longer a pregnant woman but a casino public relations worker. A love letter connected their two different worlds together. Tang Wei said that in the seven month long production she and Wu Xiubo basically had no scene together. They almost did not see each other at all. Because in the film they began to write over a book, they had to keep the communication from the beginning to the end and truly felt very wonderful. Tang Wei said that she still maintained the letter writing habit despite the modern advanced communication age. Now she still would rely to fan letters. She said, "I really thank them for trusting me, talking to me from the bottom of their hearts and opening my eyes. I would share with them as well, I would rely to them about my own experience and feeling!" Tang Wei also admitted that she has written love letters because she liked to write. Wu Xiubo joked, "I have never even written a letter!" Wu Xiubo and Tang Wei worked together on the final London encounter scene. They appeared in each other's imagination and thus went to shoot at many locations. They did not share the stage. Would they have any intimate scene in the film? Wu Xiubo joked, "We made some, but I don't know if they were useful or not because in the past the director cut some physical contact. We always held hands, an embrace was already very serious. Ours was a romance of abstinence." Tang Wei revealed that after making THE GOLDEN ERA she was beyond exhausted and she kept working, she still held out to work on BOOK. When she worked on location in Macau, in order to accommodate the casino's hours of operation everyone went "crazy". She was so exhausted that she fell twice in Macau and London. She injured her right leg and had to be wheel chair bound. She chuckled, "I have sprained my leg nine times, each time I returned to work before I recovered. I really haven't taken a day off in ten years, this was like warning to my body to properly rest. However I couldn't stop. I decided that after making this film I would have a child so I would truly be able to stop!" [ BLAH OF THE WEEK ] Columns, Reviews, Interviews 1. APPLE DAILY, MAY 3 2016, SI AND NONSENSE IF WE CANNOT EVEN TELL BETWEEN BASIC GOOD AND BAD, WE MIGHT AS WELL GO BACK TO BECOME CAVE PEOPLE When you read Takeshi Kitano's writing, you would secretly admire his honesty and mercilessness. His multiple angle prying (including himself) would leave you with no way to rebut even if you do not completely agree with what he is saying. This perhaps is where comedians are better than others, their brains have more power of observation than others. Lately I have been reading his work SUPER THINKING, I would nod in agreement inside as I read it. He analyzes and ridicules many social phenomena, viciously putting various false and dumb behaviors of modern people on the table and striping them bare. With his unique humor, he from multiple angles discusses politics, art, aging, extravagance, talks about modern Japanese society's various absurdity and mankind's various flock behavior. According to him, his honesty would often attract the masses' complaints and abuses. However, as far as I understand, he brings up these stunning questions and points out people's bad behaviors not only out of malevolent criticism but hope to stimulate the masses that has already stopped thinking to keep on thinking. This is exactly our problem: we seem to have given up on thinking. Where we are now is a world that is selling both the extreme beautiful and the extremely ugly at the same time. Various media (not just newspaper and television, but also each group or individual's online platforms) after catching an explosive point would take its nature of exaggeration and magnification to its maximum and record everything as videos. From the most subject angle they would guide readers into believing the protagonists are extremely good or extremely bad. The good ones get propped up to the Heavens, the bad ones gets stomped on to their ends. There is almost no middle ground. Tug Of War Between Good And Evil The good and bad of everything is like riding a high speed express train that passes in front of us in extreme speed without a trace. As each information, each news item, viewers' various emotions explode in every direction. Whether good or bad, commendation or condemnation, we would immediately respond: which side are you on? Who do you feel is right or wrong? As everyone is being technically guided, they provide appropriate responses. Often with extreme little (almost zero) thinking and analysis they spit out their noble comments but have no idea that they are already being controlled. Half of human nature is various evil: selfishness, egomania, taking pleasure from others' misery, these are our dark side. We all have them, that is a fact. Otherwise how could there be more and more gossip, various sex scandals and mutual destruction over inheritance would always have high ratings? One day I went out to eat, the table behind me was discussing ViuTV's G1 fighting program. In it is human nature's cruelty. The girls' gossips become selling points. That guest's comment was, "Hey it's pretty fun!" You see, "ugliness" always sells. The remaining half is empathy. Modern people have become stingier and stingier, but undoubtedly everyone has been in their nature. The simple example is when you see a child falling into the water, the average person would instinctively lend a helping hand. This is our basic goodness. The good and evil are always in a tug of war. The victory would depend on your timing, location, level of education, people and events you have encountered in life, and your wisdom. In the past, living in an interactive society we would have basic knowledge. You know that if you publicly say what you are thinking, we would get the evil eye from everywhere. Thus everyone would put away the cold blooded truth. Since having the protective screen of the computer, all the darkness thinking are spat out without any worry. With the advantage of anonymity, the tug of war between the sides vanishes. You would realize that actually being a wicked person is even more convenient and fun. In addition the poisonous tongue may be better at protecting ourselves. Thinking Is The Difference Between Man and Beast When independent common sense and thinking slowly fail in a society and evil would receive even more recognition, empathy would also gradually fail in turn. Everyone would choose to carry the inherent criticism and blindly agree with what others say. A place of such singular thinking would soon be over too, it would only keep going to an even more vitriolic state. When everyone in a place are no longer willing to bare the responsibility of "right" and "wrong", when the media could say what others want to hear just for hit rates, this public space gradually becomes poisonous. That may not be toxic, but chronic poison is more terrifying. You willingly take it day and night, when you realize your hands can no longer stop. At this time, if you still want to save yourself from that whirlpool there is only the oldest way: be sure to read more, more contact with real people, more contact with nutritious things to gradually cultivate your ability to think please. Submission to your own dark side is very convenient. "Thinking" also gets people into trouble, especially in an environment when no one but you is thinking. You then becomes the black sheep. Yet if people of a place is only left with splenetic criticism and blind following, what would that turn into in the long run? People are different from beasts because people have the basic ability to think, analyze and self examine. If people cannot even control the good and evil in their hearts, what good is civilization? We might as well go back to the prehistoric age when we can directly "bash" each other to death with clubs. - Denise Ho Wan Si A Wild Mushroom, A Free Person Who Lives On the Fridges of Show Business Started with Music, but Accidentally Through Creativity and Life See The possibilities of life. "Hope" and "Justice" Are My Beliefs 2. TA KUNG PAO, APRIL 28 2016, ASIAN FILMS MANY ROMANCES IN TURMOIL: IN THE ROOM Historically the place that has the closest relationship to Hong Kong film may still be Singapore. Early on Singapore was an important Hong Kong film market. Their filmmakers were also important investors in the Hong Kong film industry. Heavyweight film companies of the 50s and the 60s like Motion Picture and General Investment, Shaw, Kong Ngee all came from Singapore. They started their studios in Singapore and Malaysia around the same time and mainly made films in Malaysian. This close connection between Singapore and Hong Kong ended as England's Southeast Asian colonies gradually declared independence. Singapore film production also had a 20 to 30 year empty era until around 2000 when it slowly returned to film atlas. In this process, Singapore director Eric Khoo (Yau Kam Hoi) undoubtedly is an important character. His latest film IN THE ROOM brings back the soul of the Lion City's decades of change. - HUNG KWONG IN THE ROOM uses Yau Kam Hoi's expertise of multiple story structure and starts in a fictional hotel Singapure Hotel's room 27. The first story took place on the eve of the fall of Singapore in 1942. A Chinese couple and an English colonist gay lover debated whether to stay or to go. The English worried about what his Chinese boyfriend who supported the Chinese resistance would run into under Japanese occupation, but he insisted against leaving in order to take care of his family. A Mix Of Love And Sex The second story took place in the 50s, a Cantonese speaking exotic dancer taught new comers secrets of sex and even conquered and controlled their bully. The third story took place in the 60s, a musician fell for a cleaning lady and died from a drug overdose in the room. There he protected the female worker and guests in the room. The fourth story took place in the 70s. A Thai couple stayed in the room. One of them would have a sex change operation the next day, her companion was very nervous. She comforted him and told him not to be afraid, the operation was very advanced here. The current president was the expert who invented the artificial vagina. The fifth story took place in the 80s. A Japanese socialite and a Chinese boy toy snuck around in the hotel, but because he expressed his love to her she took off. The leads in the sixth story was a Korean couple. She came to the strange land with a broken heart, he was her "good friend" who had feelings for her but could only tolerate her keep looking for sex partners and climaxes. The six stories in the film all seem to be about opposite and same sex love and sex, behind them though beat Singapore's historical pulse. Connecting most of the film's stories was the musician's spirit. His death happened to divide the film right down the middle. Interestingly, in the first half of the film before his death the guests in the room were all Singapore locals. Whether they spoke English, Cantonese, Malaysian and even a flash of Mandarin, we knew that these characters were people who lived there. After his death, the people in the room spoke Thai, Japanese, Korean. Whether they came for surgery, travel or business, they were all passerbys. Outside the room, the film's first and second half could be seen as Singapore before and after independence. The second half's passerby stories were isolated from Singapore's real life. Viewers could only through passerbys' descriptions to understand everything about Singapore. For example, the president here was a famous doctor; people lamented about different races of people on the streets; and the news of political prisoner being released on the newspaper that wrapped food, the real Lion City snuck its way into an appearance. Work of Ambition In the end, the most direct and real answer to the world was actually the earliest, black and white story. The two male characters lamented about life there and everything about colonial society. Yet interestingly, aside from being gay, their home countries of China and England influenced their lives. To them, this island was the paradise where they escaped to. However it might not be where their lives belonged. In the second half of the film, the lovers of different nationalities went to the hotel for a desire that they could never satisfy -- the climax that they could not obtain, the lover who has left, "sex" that was changing. Nishino Shou's Japanese socialite had the most screen time. When the hotel was on its last leg, she was still looking that lost young lover in the broken down room. The musician's spirit and his cleaning lady gleefully watched from the sideline. Putting these six stories together into a film may be the director's most ambitious work. Aside from the widest range of space and time, he also transplanted his previous creative details into it. The musician's image came from Eric Khoo's first feature Mee Pok Man's screen writer, the manga that the Japanese socialite was reading was by Eric Khoo's animated feature TATSUMI original creator Yoshihiro Tatsumi. Of course, the carefree socialite would love to read manga about the lower class' dark life, which in itself already made people imagine endless setting. The audience and the musician's ghost after watching a series of stories about love and sex instead got a empty feeling that was hard to fill, just like Singapore despite its legalized gambling and red light district still had a certain type of indescribable suppression to the writer who lived in Hong Kong. 4. TA KUNG PAO, APRIL 28 2016, LIGHT SHADOW PATH SWALLOWING THE HEAVENS AND IP FILMS Internet novelist Feng Qingyang's work SWALLOWING THE HEAVENS at the 2nd Chinese Film and Television Literature Copyright Auction in Ningbo, Zhejiang sold its "IP mobile operation alliance rights" for 100 million yuan RMB and caught attention. Seemingly intellectual property's influence on cultural entertainment is already unstoppable. In terms of films, many were indeed IP adapted work but not all were successful. Some also went completely belly up. The Han Han novel CHANG AN LUAN based EASY LIFE only made a little over 1 million RMB. Although some blamed the box office failure on the lack of the writer's support, the objective fact was that the film itself lacked quality. Earlier the top Chinese suspense writer Cai Jun's novel based KILL TIME. Despite Ethan Juan (Yuen King Tin) and Angelababy's participation its box office was also only around 10 million RMB. Obviously IP adapted films were not miracle cures, mainly they still depended on film quality and some marketing elements. For example with the GHOST BLOWS OUT THE LIGHT based MOJIN THE LOST LEGEND and CHRONICLES OF THE GHOSTLY TRIBE, the former had better word of mouth than the latter. The internet culture, fan effect and strong marketing have already become the trend of IP films. Often neglected was the film's creative content. IP originally was a story idea that was different from film format ideas. How it was transformed into film was an important part, if handled poorly results would be difficult to achieve. The most important question of IP film adaptation was whether this IP was suitable for film adaptation. Now many internet literature sites and many novel publishers think that its IP can be made into film, which is not the fact. Many American and European film companies have enormous film libraries available for remake, but only a few have been successful. Few Hong Kong's Shaw, Golden Harvest and Golden Princess' films have been remade. If film IP is this way, other format creations of course cannot be adapted into films with certainty. In the IP film adaptation process, producers, screen writers and directors' functions are also decisive. After confirming that a certain IP can be made into a film, the team's job is no different from any other film. No one can only spend money on buying an IP then produce it roughly. After the film is completed, the scheduling and the marketing calculations are just as important. In other words, after choosing the IP, all the jobs are no different from the effort needed to make a successful film. Only IP helps with developing faster and wider recognition, giving a good film's sales a lift; it is no help to a bad film. When some say that "the time has come for IP film to cool down", I think this is what they mean. - TIN LIK [ In Production Now/Soon ] COOK UP A STORM Can : Fung Mei Kong Wu ji Kuet Jin Sik Sun d. Opening February 12 2016 at the Berlin Film Festival Opening April 7 2016 Trailer : https://youtu.be/ZsE97uwjkEo [ BERLIN INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL ] Hong Kong, summer 1997: while preparations are underway for the handover of the British Crown Colony to China, the underworld finds that it too must adapt to profound changes. With the opening of the border to China, new codes and mores make their way into the world of the triads – and those who don’t adjust their business models have already lost. A genre film from Hong Kong that chooses to set its story during those years of turmoil is tantamount to a double swan song. For these political changes also effectively spelled the end of an independent Hong Kong cinema that was admired across Asia. One of the few directors who has continued to defend and develop the genre is Johnnie To. By producing TRIVISA, To is flying the flag for three up-and-coming directors who tell the stories of three legendary gangsters of the period. This is not an anthology film, but rather an overlapping story of men who become victims of their own legends. As chance brings them all together one day in the same restaurant on the Chinese side of the border, rumours swirl that the three are planning a joint coup. In elegant fashion, hype and hubris lead to their downfall. (Christoph Terhechte) PORT OF CALL Rating : III Length : 120 mins. Opening April 6 2015 at the Hong Kong International Film Festival Opening December 3 2015 Trailer: http://youtu.be/8WlHzaSeTus [ HONG KONG INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL ] A teenage prostitute is murdered; her body cut up and flushed down the toilet, and her severed head thrown into Victoria Harbor. Director Philip Yung chooses to focus not on the crime or the investigation, but on the dead girl and her family, the cop and his family, and the killer who is without a family. The result is a genre-bender that progresses as it digresses, an atmospheric mosaic of human lives and actions that invariably get complicated, out of order and beyond reason, and with the characters firmly grounded in gritty and unforgiving reality.
