As it happens that Hong Kong International Film Festival turns 40 as well, last night they held a joint celebration. French star Sophie Marceau, Korean star Lee Kwang-Soo, Tony Leung Chiu Wai, Jia Zhangke and his wife, Chang Chen, Wing Shya (Ha Wing Hong), Alec Su (So Yau Peng) attended. One of the hosts Wong Kar Wai was asked about Carina Lau Ka Ling's claim that the film that he produced, FERRYMAN (BAN DOH YUN) would have to be reshot. Wong Kar Wai smiled and denied. "Don't listen to her, it's been very smooth." Leung Chiu Wai rushed back from his Mainland production to attend. Wai Jai said that he has been watching the TVB re-run of his series DUKE OF MOUNT DEER and joked, "When I turned on the television and saw myself I was a little scared. I immediately went to sleep." Busy with his film lately, he was asked if he had any time to be with Ka Ling. He joked, "She is even busier than me." http://orientaldaily.on.cc/cnt/entertainment/20160323/00282_012.html * (2016/03/23) Artist Bob Lam Sing Bun who is heading from television to the big screen plays his first lead role in the new film NGOR YIU FAT DAT (I WANT TO BE RICH). Two days ago he posted a photo with artist Snow Suen Wai Suet online. In the photo Bob transformed into the dirty guy while Ah Suet was dressed like an adult video actress. Bob said that she was "Suet Suet Hatano". Many fans said, "My heart aches for how much Ah Suet has to take off!" "Doesn't she have to be so sexy, I only want to see the pure and innocent Suet Suet!" Ah Suet revealed that she will not turn sexy. "I am very fortunate to have so many people who love me, I would properly protect myself and maintain this innocent image. If I want to be sexy, I would have done it ten years ago when I got into the business. Everyone can relax! This time it's just for laughs, when we made this scene the entire set cracked up." * (2016/03/23) The Jacky Cheung Hok Yau and Karena Lam Ka Yun starred Emperor Motion Picture HEAVEN IN THE DARK (UM SIK TIN TONG) last night held its premiere, Ka Yun and her director husband Steve Yuen Kim Wai along with Cheung Hok Yau, Anthony Wong Chau Sun, Nick Cheung Ka Fai, Ken Hung Cheuk Lap, Kathy Yuen (Tong Yi), Michelle Wai Si Nga, Helena Law Lan, Emperor boss Albert Yeung Sau Sing and his wife attended. Eason Chan Yik Shun went in without posing for photos. Ka Yun was interviewed with Hok Yau. Hok Yau said that he did not bring his wife May Lo (Law Mei Mei) and their daughters. "When I am working, they very rarely come. This film is very controversy, I don't want to take a lot of time to explain it. (Are you afraid that your daughters would ask questions?) The older one is grown, now even if I want her to ask more she wouldn't! The little one still would ask some nonsensical stuff." Hok Yau said that Ka Yun was stricter with her child. Ka Yun revealed that two years ago she enrolled in a child rearing course that was suitable for age 2 to 12. "It's useful! The child is an individual, I have to make her understand that she has responsibilities. When she is older than 12 she would have to respect them." Hok Yau joked, "I have always respected her, she is the one who doesn't respect me!" The 15 year old older daughter Yiu Wai earlier was caught with a group of classmates. Hok Yau said that they are classmates and his daughter does not have a boyfriend yet. Was he worried? He said, "I am not worried, when do I get to worry!" In the trailer Ka Yun threw red wine in Hok Yau's face. He revealed that Ka Yun did not how know to throw wine. In the first take it only reached his shoulder. Then she practiced hard with the assistant director. Hok Yau even impersonated the assistant director's helpless expression, which was hilarious! Speaking of working with her husband Yuen Kim Wai, Hok Yau cut in, "Great, happy!" Ka Yun seriously said, "Actually he is very strict. (Did you yell at you?) We would discuss things, no yelling." On the stage Ka Yun praised that Hok Yau's role was very suitable for him. "He has to be charming but not too handsome, otherwise he would have a lot of burden. So he has no problem." Hok Yau immediately said that "the burden is very heavy". Hok Yau's "little brother" Ka Fai felt that Hong Kong should have even more drama like HEAVEN. He said, "I am OK as an actor to make this kind of film, but the production would have more MSG. Ultimately I have been so hardcore for so many years, I would have to be more commercial. (Dirtier?) Haha! Definitely!" Speaking of Ka Yun working with her director husband, Ka Fai stated that if future productions would have a suitable role, he definitely would ask his wife Esther Kwan Wing Ho to perform. * (2016/03/23) Superstar of a generation Leslie Cheung Kwok Wing has passed away for 13 years. Fans did not miss Gor Gor any less. Every year on April 1st fans around the world would remember this superstar idol in a variety of ways without fail. This April to "Gor" fans would have triple meaning, because September 12 would have been Gor Gor's 60th birthday; in addition, Gor Gor's former manager Chan Suk Fun earlier announced the official establishment of the LesFANmily fan club for "Gor" fans around the world to have an interactive exchange platform and continue to unite and gather their strength together and spread Gor Gor's spirit of pursuing the true, the kind and the beautiful. This would also be the first gathering since the LesFANmily was founded. LesFanmily will on April 2 in Hong Kong, July 9 in Tokyo and early September in Shanghai to hold their first event in different formats. The events will only welcome LesFANmily members and invited guests. In Hong Kong, the event on April 2 at the Kowloon Bay International Trade and Exhibition Center would invite a singer Gor Gor has praised uniquely before, Leo Ku Kui Ke. In 1994, Ku Kui Ke just released his first song and was still new. Gor Gor in an interview with Sandra Ng Kwan Yu was asked which new comer he would pick to be a successor in music. The honorable Gor Gor immediately said that the term "successor" would be a lot of pressure on new singers. He instead changed it to a list of new comers that he thought had potential. Gor Gor immediately named "Ku Kui Ke". Gei Jai has always appreciated the honor Gor Gor for publicly naming him for his potential. He never hyad the chance to personally thank Gor Gor. He hoped that through Gor Gor's 60th birthday party this year to say to Gor Gor from afar, "Thank you!" That night Gor Gor's artist friends would also share their memories, recordings and valuable collection items. Mrs. Chan revealed that the July 9 event will take place in Ebisu Garden Hall in Tokyo. Mrs. Chan thanked Japanese "Gor" for still having one event a month to remember Leslie and folding origami cranes together. The cranes that they sent to Hong Kong all had different yet thoughtful themes and also triggered the origami crane folding for blessing event at the 10th anniversary of Gor Gor's passing. That event also broke the Guiness World Record. Some faithful fans would come to pay their respect in Hong Kong twice a year. Because the Mainland had many "Gor" fans and LesFANmily was registered in the Mainland in Shanghai, Mrs. Chan prepared to hold an event in September for Gor Gor's 60th birthday and for Mainland "Gor" fans to be able to get together and shared Gor Gor's work. This year the events at all three locations would only admit LesFANmily members. For details please keep an eye for announcements through channels like the club's facebook page, Weibo, text messages. LesFANmily will not only hold large scale "Gor" fan events but has already begun to plan projects like Gor Gor's performance costume restoration, photo exhibits, memorial hall preparation and other jobs and welcomed "Gor" fans with the abilities and interests to participate. * (2016/03/23) Veteran director Ivan Lai Kai Ming earlier passed away from cancer. Yesterday a memorial was held. Anthony Wong Chau Sun and Ron Ng Cheuk Hei did not know about his illness. Chau Sun even praised him, "He might have been upset but he was easy going, he never yelled at anyone." Suen King On and his wife Money Lo Man Yi was asked how Mrs. Lai was. Lo Man Yi emotionally said, "Mrs. Lai said that when he first passed she would hold his clothes and cry." * (2016/03/23) Sammo Hung Kam Bo since 1997's MR. NICE GUY (YUT GOR HO YUN) returns to directing 17 years later as he stars in his new film THE BODYGUARD (DUT GUNG YEH YEH). Gold label producer Bill Kong Chi Keung and Andy Lau Tak Wa as its producers. Not only Big Brother Big and Wa Jai performed, but also Yuen Biao, Yuen Wah, Yuen Qiu and the "Cinema City Iron Triangle" Dean Shek Tin, Karl Maka and Tsui Hark. Big Brother Big admitted that he returned to directing again because the script moved him. The character in the film was not too complicated as he was confident to be able to handle it. In addition he had a group of friends as guest stars, it was a very happy event. Producer Wa Jai was asked if it was very hard to get Big Brother Big to direct again. Claiming to be only a little boss, Wa Jai said, "Big boss Kong Chi Keung already had his idea. Big Brother Big after reading the script was probably tempted and interested in the script, but it would be the best for him to star as well. That would only happen if he could be moved. With two jobs on his hand he had a lot to take care of. Truly directing differed from action directing. The director had to babysit me, the action director only had to give me the order. During the process Big Brother Big very quickly got into the story and helped with the budget control. Thus this producer job was very easy for me." This time Big Brother Big invited many veteran filmmakers like the "Cinema City Iron Triangle" Karl Maka, Dean Shek Tin and Tsui Hark and the Seven Little Fortunes to guest star. Did he call in all the favors? Big Brother Big said, "Not yet, I still have some." Wa Jai said that most people who came to perform thought that they did not have enough screen time, so next time they could call in more favors. Big Brother Big jokes that next time he would have to give them something sweet, as he could not just keep calling in favors. Wa Jai was asked if he would make a movie and call in favors? Wa Jai did not dare. "I am very thin skinned, and I haven't treated people well. Big Brother Big personally cultivated many people and has toiled in the film industry with everyone. Their relationships could be described as long time friendships. I don't dare. Instead for a concert I would dare to invite the Four Great Heavenly Kings. For a film I really don't have the guts." In the film Big Brother Big played an old special agent. Wa Jai in order to convince everyone that Big Brother Big was a Zhongnanhai special agent used old footage and the latest computer special effects for Big Brother Big to appear in them. The film had its share of action scenes, which one was the most difficult? The action director of many films, Big Brother Big directly said that they were not difficult for them at all. "The difficulty was when I started to conceive the entire stunt, the entire atmosphere; after I thought it through then the shoot would have no difficulty at all. (Why not arranged for stunts for Wa Jai?) It wasn't deliberate, I only followed the characters in the script." Big Brother Big has made many action films, did he prefer action or drama? He joked, "My favorite is romance, hugs and kisses then you get paid. It's pretty good." He remembered years ago when he worked with Tian Niu on a television series. On the first day he had her in his arms for the shoot and he already felt very unnatural. Rich with romantic film experience, Wa Jai joked, "Leave it to me." Speaking of intimate scenes, Wa Jai remembered a joke from when his film EVERLASTING LOVE was released after he made RETURN OF THE CONDOR HEROES. "At the time the paper's headline was 'Even Big Hero Makes Love', what a big deal it was. Directors wouldn't force them too before. Everyone wore jeans to the shoot to keep the other from feeling it." This time he was able to get the Seven Little Fortunes to guest star. Has Big Brother Big not seen them for awhile? He pointed out that every month or two they would meet. "Everyone's mobile phone have group text contact, but it wasn't group sale. The first time when I texted no one dared to pay me any mind. The second time I asked them are you kidding, actually they thought I was an impostor. After joining in we constantly got together. We had dinner during the Lunar New Year, birthdays, when the brothers return to Hong Kong we meet too. However for a film production it's rarer." As the big brother of the Seven Little Fortune, Big Brother Big remembered the 50th anniversary 7 years ago. Soon they will reach the 60th anniversary. He said, "Last month everyone reminded that we will reach 60 years in 3 years, could we have a dinner. I said no, playing sick would be better because each time a lot of people had to be involved. It would be the best to wait for the next 50 years." Wa Jai joked, "Then there wouldn't be so many people." Big Brother Big lamented, "That night I watched until my eyes were rolling because since childhood everyone started to roll around on the stage. Suddenly I saw everyone was already sixty something. Many of the women have already become grannies and grandmas, but they commemorated the school spirit. I was very appreciative and moved. If we have another dinner, then we definitely have to talk and sing, do what we did in our Seven Little Fortunes. (Would you find younger versions?) We have to find our disciples first. Even if we found younger versions, they would be meaningless because they would have no historical background." Over the years Big Brother Big never accepted any disciple because he felt that if he did he would be responsible to teach them. He would like the most to be like Master Yu Jim Yuen, taught several children with achievements and could represent the previous generation. Has anyone asked him to be their master? He joked, "Maybe they are afraid that it would cost too much." * (2016/03/22) The Andy Lau Tak Wa produced and guest starred action drama THE BODYGUARD (DUT GUNG YEH YEH) yesterday released the music video of the theme song that Wa Jai wrote the lyrics to and performed, FORGIVE ME. The film was Sammo Hung Kam Bo directed and starred. He played a retired military officer Old Ting who lost his granddaughter due to his "amnesia". Later with the girl next doors Chun Hua she received the comfort of family. The deep and heavy grandfather grandchild relationship with the Wa Jai performed FORGIVE ME became even more tear inducing. In the music video Wa Jai changed his image to an absent father, after experiencing a mob fight he came to a self realization. * (2016/03/22) The 40th Hong Kong International Film Festival last night opened at the Cultural Center. Films CHOGQING HOT POT and TRIVISA (SHU DAI CHIU FUNG) opened the event. The film's stars Bai Baike, Chen Kun, Qin Hao and Gordon Lam Ka Tung attended. When guest Sophie Marceau appeared, she became the target of everyone's camera. Due to rain, the event was moved indoors at the last minute and the guests were unable to walk the red carpet. Richie Jen (Yam Yin Chai) yesterday revealed that earlier he became a target for criminals as they hacked into the computer that he and his wife Tina shared and almost stole his "entire life saving". Siu Chai said, "They hacked the computer, used Tina's email to send a letter to the bank and said that we were very busy but needed money. They asked the bank to send money as soon as possible to an account. The bank was suspicious and called Tina, who immediately looked for me. After learning that I was fine she immediately told the bank not to send the money. Because my wife and I aren't great with computers, at first we didn't know what happened. At the time I was working in the Mainland, I could only handle the matter remotely. After I returned to Hong Kong I immediately asked my management company's colleagues for help. Finally I discovered that hackers have hacked into our computer and even changed our passwords. After that we immediately called the police!" Due to the severity of the matter, Siu Chai yesterday morning through a lawyer notified all his banks and asked them to put his accounts on high alert and to decline any withdrawal that Siu Chai did not request personally. How much did the criminals asked to transfer? Siu Chai said that almost his entire life saving. "If I say a lot you wouldn't believe it, if I say a little it would be embarrassment. I don't want to say the actual amount. (Do you know if you suffer any other losses?) Because the computer had a lot of stuff like some online shopping accounts for now I don't know if I have suffered any other losses." Because Siu Chai's computer even had their personal identification documents and personal information of their child, they were concerned that the criminals would do anything further and hoped that they would stop as soon as possible. Siu Chai also took his lawyer's advice and explained the matter once to avoid any other problem. In addition, HOT's director Yang Qing yesterday held Bai Baike and others to meet the media. "Box office Queen" Bai Baike was asked whether the film would have any box office pressure. "I have already forgotten about numbers. Since everyone is talking about the director, which proves that this is a film that is worth watching. To be able to work with this post 80s director, I am very happy to have made this film." Chen Kun also said that the production was rather pleasant. The leads even performed the Grasshoppers' hit HEARTBREAK FRONTLINE ALLIANCE. * (2016/03/22) Jet Tone, which has made many classic films like IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE (FA YEUNG NIN WA) and THE GRANDMASTER (YUT DOI JUNG SI) this year enters its 25th anniversary. Coincidentally the Hong Kong International Film Festival turns 40 this year, tonight a special joint party will take place. Jet Tone boss Wong Kar Wai and its artists Chang Chen, Sandrine Pinna (Cheung Yung Yung), Ke Chia-Yen will attend. Currently working on the film FERRYMAN (BAI DOH YUN) will return to Hong Kong for the event. * (2016/03/22) The 35th Hong Kong Film Awards will take place on the 3rd. Many nominees including Sylvia Chang (Cheung Ngai Ga), Tang Wei, Karena Lam Ka Yun, Jacky Cheung Hok Yau, Tony Leung Ka Fai, Nick Cheung Ka Fai, Angelica Lee Sinjie, Max Zhang Jin earlier participated in the program photo shoot. Two mothers to be Tang Wei and Lee Sinjie radiated with the brilliance. Nominated for Best Actress with A TALE OF THREE CITIES (SAM SING GEI), Tang Wei said that she was very happy to work with Sean Lau Ching Wan for the first time and was very surprised to be nominated. Currently pregnant she said, "Thank you very much to everyone for giving me this opportunity, especially for giving me the recognition at this moment. It makes me feel the next time when I come back I will definitely perform even better." Despite life changes, she stated that she still liked to read scripts a lot and also said that now she has more time than before. She also has more ideas and she is able to have even more time to properly think about how to perform a character. Also pregnant, Lee Sinjie with MURMURS OF THE HEART (LIM LIM) was nominated for Best Supporting Actress. She felt that this mother character was the most natural in her film career. She admitted that a support role was more difficult to play than the lead. She said, "Support role has less screen time. As soon as I appeared in the movie I had to be in character. It's not easy to have a firm grasp on the feeling and perform. Of course I also have to thank director Cheung Ngai Ga's guidance for enabling me to perform even better." * (2016/03/21) Chapman To Man Chak, Gregory Wong Chung Hiu, and Philip Keung Ho Man earlier promoted their film THE MOBFATHERS (SUEN LO DANG). They said that in the film they played mobsters who used every trick in the book to become the boss, thus leading to a series of storms. Speaking of the election subject, was he afraid that it would remind people of something? Producer Ah Jat joked, "The most important is to buy tickets and go to the movie, no matter what it reminds everyone of." He said that the film will not be released in the Mainland and will focus on the domestic market. Thus the production was more daring. Violent, bloody and sex scenes will appear, only the title had to be renamed because it was unable to pass censorship inspections. He was not worried that the film's category III rating would affect the box office. Ah Jat said, "Now it's very tough to make a domestic film, you have to make over HK$ 10 million to be able to make another. I am confident though. The highest grossing film in my life is the category III film VULGARIA (DAI JOOK HEI KET)." Ah Jat revealed that the exciting bed scene in the film was cut. He joked, "Because I am too long.....my bed scene, so it had to be cut short." He also pointed out that Ken Hung Cheuk Lap and Wong Chung Hiu had a hand job scene. When asked if the shoot was awkward, Wong Chung Hiu boasted, "I was very excited and stimulated." Ah Jat chimed in, "But I saw Hung Cheuk Lap was not too happy about work, it was hard on him." * (2016/03/21) Aaron Kwok Fu Sing with the film PORT OF CALL (DAP HUET CHUM MUI) received the New York Asian Film Festival "Star Asia" award and Berlin Chinese Film Festival's Best Actor award. Yesterday he again won the 7th Youth Film Handbook Chinese Film Award's Best Actor award in Beijing. Sing Sing competed against Feng Xiaogang, Deng Chao and Lee Hong-Chi, all three gave outstanding performances but the jury pointed out that Sing Sing played the cop during his investigation with an incredible persistence and unprecedented details. His sense of pace for the character and performance method also greatly improved. After winning the award, Sing Sing said, "I am very happy, any award to me is an encouragement! The event this time reviewed different Chinese, Hong Kong and Taiwan films. PORT OF CALL is a pure Hong Kong film and has not been released in the Mainland yet, but it still received high praises from everyone. To the entire team it is very encouraging! Having the chance to work on an excellent film is the most important to me as an actor, this is already the greatest reward for me." Aside from Sing Sing, PORT's Jessie Li (Chun Xia) also received New Actor award. Chun Xia said that she would cherish all the encouragement. PORT also became one of the Top Ten films. Liu Xiaoqing received the Outstanding Achievement Award. * (2016/03/21) The famous car company BMW Hong Kong sponsored BMW Hong Kong Derby yesterday took place at the Sha Tin Racing Course. Donnie Yen Chi Tan was the Derby ambassador for the 4th time in a row. He attended with his wife Cissy Wang and sister Chris Yen Chi Ching. IP MAN 3's Mainland box office was under the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television's investigation for "number fixing" and box office self purchase. Lead actor Chi Tan also noticed. He admitted that the film company its Mainland distribution rights and regrettably it was beyond an actor's control. He said that the IP MAN 3 performed well and broke many records. This scandal was unfair to the film, as he agreed that every film should follow a fair standard. He continued, "Box office is the index of a film's success, but every film's achievement needs to pass the test of time. Once it was suggested for the Mainland to simultaneously release the film with Hong Kong and other places at the end of last year and work according to the rules as usual, but the Mainland did not release the film until three months later. As an actor my responsibility is doing his best, I am not familiar with distribution and I can't control and supervise it." Chi Tan hoped to ask Raymond Wong Pak Ming or the boss to properly communicate and follow up with the Mainland film company. His on screen wife Lynn Xiong (Hung Doi Lam) was rumored to wed soon. Chi Tan has already congratulated her and wished her well. Having witnessed how sweet and happy Lynn was when her boyfriend Kwok Ho Chun personally picked her up at the airport, he praised her for finally finding the real "Ip Man" of her heart. * (2016/03/21) Sammo Hung Kam Bo and Andy Lau Tak Wa yesterday attended the film THE BODYGUARD (DUT GUNG YEH YEH)'s charity kung fu day in Mongkok. They practiced kung fu wiht one hundred children. Wa Jai personally commanded and led the children to salute "Big Brother" Hung Kam Bo. The event presented "Outstanding Filmmaker Golden Film Award" to Hung Kam Bo for his contributions to and achievements in film. The event also donated HK$ 100,000 to the Sammo Hung charity fund to help people in need to improve their lives. The event played the Wa Jai performed film theme song FORGIVE ME (YUEN LEUNG NGOR). Directing a film again after 17 years, Hung Kam Bo joked that it was because no one would hire him. This time he did it because Wa Jai asked him and the script was very attractive. It was very different from his past film that was mainly comedic entertainment. Speaking of the production, he said that he spent everyday with the actors. He will slowly save that in the future, as nothing made him happier than being together with everyone. If this film will be a hit then he will be even happier as he will share the fruits with everyone. The film invited veteran filmmakers like Karl Maka and Shek Tin to perform. Producer Wa Jai said that his first film in the business was Cinema City's. At the time he met Maka but at the time he did not have time to get to know him. This film was like visiting his film journey again as he got to know every generation of filmmakers again. Did Hung Kam Bo personally invite Maka and Shek Tin? He said, "Yes, Maka and Shek Tin no longer make movies. This time I called him to ask them to be 'extras'. They agreed right away. I really have to thank them. If they don't help, they aren't friends." Wa Jai joked, "You don't have to thank me, I charge money." Hung Kam Bo also said that this time the most challenging was the bed scene. He joked, "I have looked forward to it for many years, finally I have one but it was with myself. In the story I got up at 6AM." Aside from directing and starring, Hung Kam Bo was performed another version of the film theme song. He joked, "Becoming a singer at old age, let's not talking about it. I am afraid that I would become a music star too." Contributing a lot to the film industry, he received an "Outstanding Filmmaker Golden Film Award". He said, "Of course I am happy, thank you viewers for your support. I will keep going. I hope viewers will continue to support me, from now on I will keep directing." Later Hung Kam Bo and Wa Jai spoke to the media together. Hung Kam Bo said that the story came first in THE BODYGUARD. In the film he had a grandfather grandchild relationship. Since he lost his granddaughter he treated Wa Jai's daughter like his granddaughter as atonement. Before the shoot did he practice with his grandsons? He said, "I don't need to because it's two different reactions. I am very happy with my grandson. (Do you feel your grandsons have a knack for acting?) I don't know if they have the knack, they are still little. (Do you want to work with all three generations on a movie?) That would depend on the opportunity. I don't know if they would like it. I don't want to though. I want them to go to school. If they kick me it would be brutal for me." Was he confident about the box office? He admitted that the more the better, but he would not be too worried about it. He would be happy with a good audience reaction. If the reaction would be bad then he would question himself. Wa Jai revealed that he had no fight scene in the film. His character was a normal man who did not know to take care of the family or care about his daughter. He said that it was very hard to play. was he afraid that he could not relate to the character? He admitted, "I couldn't get into it, it's very hard. (Expressing the pain of men?) In the film I have no wife, she abandoned me long ago. It's different from real life, so I don't need to worry." Earlier TVB gold label producer Lee Tim Sing held a retirement banquet. Wa Jai was the surprise guest. Wa Jai stated that he was not invited. "I went on my own when I found out about it. My seat was still designated for (Johnnie) To Kei Fung." Wa Jai also said that he will ask Brother Tim to perform in the future. * (2016/03/20) Chapman To Man Chak, Gregory Wong Chung Hiu, director Herman Yau Lai To and screen writer Erica Li Man two nights ago attended the Hong Kong University new film screening forum of THE MOBFATHERS as Hong Kong Performing Art Academy film and television department students were invited to watch. A Mainland student asked Yau Lai To a question, To Man Chak jokingly said that he had to translate for Yau Lai To and immediately used less than fluent Putonghua to answer the question. When Ah Jat was done, Yau Lai To smiled and thanked Ah Jat, "Thank you Mr. (Fernadno) Chui Sai On for translating for me." He indirectly poked fun at Ah Jat's poor Putonghua through Macau Chief Executive Chui Sai On. To Man Chak said that this time THE MOBFATHERS lampooned the Hong Kong election system with the mob. He stated that the domestic consciousness has always been there, it did not suddenly rise. When they discussed the question of balance with students, To Man Chak said, "I am afraid that you think balance is harmony, actually before a balance the pendulum always swings back." Speaking of the sensitive subject of a mob election, Ah Jat admitted that he had no bottom line when he worked on a domestic film. As long as someone was willing to pay, he would be willing to make them. Director Yau Lai To said that preparation for this film already began in 2012. He stated that currently he considered himself to be living in a world in chaos, he would do as much as he could. Wong Chung Hiu after the HKTV series THE ELECTION made his second story about election with this film. He said, "Earlier the HKTV series was about hoping for Hong Kong to have a real general election, but this one is about mob election. The definitions are a little different. This time is very clear and very close to the ground, as it used another method. The people really want to vote, some are helpless and cannot do so when they are upset at their lives." In the film Wong Chung Hiu and Ken Hung Cheuk Lap played homosexuals. In one scene Hung Cheuk Lap pleasured Wong Chung Hiu with his hand. A student asked a question but had no idea who Hung Cheuk Lap was, calling him "the one who grabbed Wong Chung Hiu's thing". To Man Chak joked, "The one you are talking about is Hung Cheuk Lap, white and smooth Hung Cheuk Lap. So you haven't heard of him?" The students cracked up. * (2016/03/20) IP MAN 3's Mainland box office had problems. After the film bureau investigation, 32 million yuan RMB was falsified box office, 56 million RMB was self purchased box office. The authorities immediately ordered the distribution company to halt operation for a month and the related cinemas received serious warnings. The film's producer Raymond Wong Pak Ming yesterday admitted, "we sold the distribution rights of this film to a Mainland distribution company. Whatever they did had nothing to do with us and was beyond our control. However this film indeed broke box office records when it was released in many places, so I felt that as long as it was properly released in the Mainland, it could have good performance. There was no need to do so much, the film was truly well made!" Wong Pak Ming even agreed with the Mainland film bureau for taking action this time to serve as a warning. However he was still fully confident in IP MAN 3's box office. "Even after 32 million yuan RMB, the film made 770 million and would extremely likely to surpass 800 million. As far as I understood, actually the box office was more chaotic in the first few days of release. Later it was already fine." * (2016/03/18) Alex Fong Lik Sun and Stephy Tang Lai Yun have been together for ten years and rumored to have secretly wed many times, finally they did not announce "wedding news" but "break up news" instead! Yesterday Siu Fong and Stephy through Sun Entertainment Culture company issued their "break up statement" that rocked the city. Several hours later Stephy on social media "appeared" and posted that the break up did not involved any third party, she did not do anything to harm him. For "destroying the fairy tale" in everyone's eyes, Stephy said, "Sorry to disappoint everyone." Yesterday they through their company issued a statement to end their relationship as a couple. The statement pointed out that both of them came to the decision after careful consideration, breaking up was the best choice. At work they remained good partners and privately they were still good friends. They asked the outside not to make other speculation to harm either one of them. In the afternoon Stephy on social media explained the reason for the break up and said that it was a very solemn decision. They did not have any third party, did not do anything to harm the other. For ten years they worked hard toward the same direction on the same road, but gradually their pace differed as they were looking at their own scenery. Stephy remained very protective of Siu Fong as she only blamed fate. "Siu Fong is the best guy I have ever met. I wasn't fortunate enough to be with him until we are old and gray, I can only blame fate. I don't have any right to regret and no need to either." As for the "break up", Stephy felt that "breaking up was only because of sacrifice. Sacrifice may be even greater love, helping the other to find someone even more suitable." The "on screen couple" in everyone's eyes also brought "incredible pressure" on them. "When a real couple goes on the screen the pressure actually is incredible. Everyone's expectation of us, blessing for us......now I can only say sorry to disappoint everyone! Fairy tale never existed in my world, only love. our love truly existed, never false never fake." Although they broke up, Stephy still blessed Siu Fong like he was the closest family member and asked everyone to continue to believe in love. * (2016/03/18) Top world champagne brand Moet & Chandon was the official champagne of the 10th Asian Film Award. Aside from providing the beverage the company also designed an elegant party for Asian film colleagues to have a place to gather and interact. At the same time they could have a little champagne to temporarily relieve the tension before the awards, echoing the brand's all new concept of celebrating the present #OPENTHENOW to create #MoetMoment that belonged to the Asian film colleagues and opened the award show brilliantly. Best Newcomer nominee Mainland star Jessie Li (Chun Xia), and Moet Rising Star Chun Woo Hee after the red carpet were invited to sign autographs on a glittering 3 liter special champagne bottle. Chun Xia said that she really liked champagne. "Because girls like the sweeter taste, in addition the life pressure is enormous, drinking a little can help me relax and relieve the stress. (How do you relieve stress?) I sing, read, watch movies." She said that she was not confident about the Best Newcomer competition. "Because everyone is very strong, I feel that at my age winning this award may not be a good thing. I am afraid that I would be proud. I need even more and greater honing, this way I would cherish it even more." Chun Woo Hee revealed that when she attended parties with friends she would celebrate with champagne. Sometimes though she could get drunk easily. Because alcohol and music with happy moments with friends would make people more hyper. She continued that her happiest moment was when she was making movies. Winkie Lai Mei Yin and Cindy Wong Sin Ting dressed up. Lai Mei Yin revealed that she drank. "Especially when I am having dinner with friends. Drinking and eat are really well paired, like red meat and red wine, seafood and white wine. I know a little about that, and my tolerance is pretty good. I haven't been drunk yet." Wong Sin Ting also said that her tolerance was decent. "I really enjoy the drinking process, especially when I am drinking with friends I am even happier. I really like champagne, because the moment the champagne 'popped' was great." Director Raman Hui Sing Ngai and actor Lee Hong-Chi after the red carpet appeared at the champagne party. Hui Sing Ngai said that he had a little to drink, but he would only drink at events. "I like champagne, kind of sweet, but now after having a little I am a little hyper. I get drunk pretty easily. (Would any funny situation appear when you are drunk?) It's very extreme, either I talk nonstop or I sleep. However I don't puke easily." New Actor nominee Lee Hong-Chi also liked champagne because it could relax him. He said, "Before a performance or at parties I would drink a little. Before a performance it could relax me and put me in a better shape. Of course I couldn't drink too much. (Do you have a good tolerance?) It needs to be trained. I have been drunk but I wouldn't embarrass myself. I would only sleep. My previous movie had drinking scenes, I had to drink hard liquor so I was always drunk. That way I could get off work even sooner." * (2016/03/18) The 10th Asian Film Award red carpet took place last night at the Venetian Macao. Hong Kong representative Xenia Chong stole the spotlight. She said that because of the material tape would make the dress to heavy. Did her boyfriend Steven Cheung Chi Hung act up? She said, "He said he couldn't even look!" Shu Qi played a village woman in her new film. Would she perform without make up? She said, "Kind of, I don't really have to use make up, but I had to go by stages. In the final stage I would have to make my face dirty." She also said that the director did not want her to be too thin, so she was asked to gain weight. For the award show though she dropped the weight again. Korean star Clara Lee was the host. She joked that she was more nervous about being the host than wearing all the expensive jewelry. Clara said that she might have been breaking out because she was so nervous. Cherry Ngan Cheuk Ling was nominated for Best Supporting Actress with MOJIN: THE LOST LEGEND. She said that on the team only she and several workers were from Hong Kong, so she felt very honored. Korean hunks Lee Byung-Hun and Yoo Ah-In yesterday attended the 10th Asian Film Award's media interview in Macau. Lee Byung-Hun was nominated for Best Actor with INSIDE MEN. As a guest presenter he never thought about being nominated this year, and he hoped to have a chance to work with Donnie Yen Chi Tan in the future. Speaking of losing his right hand in INSIDE and having to act with his left hand, he stated that even eating was a problem. However he thought that even with a flaw he would not have a problem. As for working in Hollywood, he joked that someone had to ask him first. Earlier he was rumored to have a part in the John Woo (Ng Yu Sum) directed MANHUNT, he said that he still has not decided yet. As for the Oscars being accused of discrimination against Asians, Lee Byung-Hun said that perhaps the minority they were referring to were not Asians. Yoo Ah-In felt very honored to received the "Next Generation Award". Growing up watching Hong Kong films, he hoped to have a chance to come to work on a movie in Hong Kong. The hit Korean series DESCENDANTS OF THE SUN starred his friends Song Hye-Kyo and Song Joong-Ki. He also guest starred. When asked if he would like to have a pose off with Song Joong-Ki, he said that he was not as handsome as Song! Singer Ivana Wong Yuen Chi and Hins Cheung King Hin walked the red carpet together. Ivana was asked if she was pregnant. She smiled and said, "I am pregnant, with fat. It's from desserts, I just had too many!" Hin Jai joked that she seemed to want to have 10 kids and would need HK$ 40 million to be able to raise them. Then he said, "But you can make that back with one movie!" Ivana said, "Then I have to work with you to be able to!" Japanese director Hirokazu Koreeda was nominated for Best Director with OUR LITTLE SISTER. Was he confident? Hirokazu Koreeda said that he was surprised to see so many reporters. He was happy to meet directors and actors of many different nations at the event, he already felt honored and fortunate to be nominated. He only enjoyed the production process and not after the award. Among the nominated films he only saw Jia Zhangke's MOUNTAINS MAY DEPART at the Cannes Film Festival; however he really admired Taiwan director Hou Hsiao-Hsien. Although Hou was younger than him, he was a director who was very worth respecting. Hou Hsiao-Hsien's work introduced him to Taiwan and China. Hirokazu Koreeda would like to work with non Japanese actors. He said that working with actors of different nationalities would be very exciting. He would like to work with Korean actor Song Kang-Ho. He said, "Earlier I met him in Busan and Seoul, I thought that he is a charming star of the people." In the film he fought with his girlfriend Angie Shum Yat Ka over her part time job as a sexy promotion girl. She was even suspected of cheating. After the film A SECRET BETWEEN US (DAI YUT CHI BUT SI NEI) he again played a "cheated on boyfriend". Edward however was not afraid of being typecast. "As long as it's not that way in real life it's fine! I don't know why Director Yip always asks me to play these tragic characters. I hope to have more choices later!" However this time Edward had even more room to show his skills. "My character is rather short tempered, different from the real me. It was a pretty big challenge. The director trusted me a lot, giving me a lot of room to perform." * (2016/03/18) Malaysian singer Hank Yip Chun Hung earlier worked on his first film in Hong Kong. Because he spoke with other actors in Cantonese throughout, he despite speaking fluent Cantonese admitted that grasping the speech speed was hard. "This is the first time I made a movie in Hong Kong. Although normally I have worked in Malaysia normally, this time I had to speak Cantonese all throughout. The hardest part was to speak smoothly and quickly. I practiced for a very long time!" His film brought out the effects and damages of online bully. Has Hank been a victim of it? He stated, "I have always thought that I don't belong in the online world. Communication technology instead made people even distance. Now things that go viral online tend to be negative, then everyone chime in. The person involved would be affected no matter what, the entire atmosphere is bad!" * (2016/03/18) New Malaysian actress Brandy Lim (Lam Sze Chi) earlier worked on the new film BULLY (SI AK JEH). As one of the lead actress, she played a cool alien in the film. "In the story a girl was under too much pressure in Hong Kong and started to hallucinate. Later she gained alien power, which made her kill. I played the alien, a colder character that didn't say much. This character of course wasn't like playing a normal person. First the director asked me to not to smile too brightly, I had to smile a little unnaturally so I had to grasp that well. The most memorable was kissing a girl, when we kissed we were too soft. Originally it was just a peck, later the director asked how could we kiss and not move?" She also revealed she worked with an actor on a love scene. When asked if she was tempted, she said, "Originally I probably would in a love scene, but at the time the actor's husband was present so it was much more awkward. However since everyone knew each other we were fine! Before the shoot we didn't really rehearse. During the shoot he suddenly jumped on me, after getting intimate I too let go." Lately she has been working in Hong Kong more and more frequently. Brandy said that she enjoyed it. "I hope to be able to stay in Hong Kong more, maybe even rent a place. I haven't tried dating a Hong Kong guy, leave it to chance! I feel Hong Kong guys and girls are very independent. In Malaysia, if a guy asked a girl out he definitely would drive and pick her up. However Hong Kong transportation is developed, they would go to the date place on their own. I too like this type of independent romance." * (2016/03/18) Jacky Cheung Hok Yau and Karena Lam Ka Yun earlier appeared on TVB Entertainment News station program STARTALK. Ka Yun this time performed for her director husband Steve Yuen Kim Wai. She said that she was nervous for him. Co-star Hok Yau revealed, "I can prove that she really is very nervous. Earlier we did a lot of interviews. When her husband wasn't around Ka Yun's answers were very natural. Yet during this interview her husband just came in. She suddenly made more gestures and got more nervous! I am not nervous at all because I never treated him like Ka Yun's husband. I couldn't care less about him." * (2016/03/18) China's Ministry of Commerce said that in the first two months of this year, the national film box office accumulated over 1.12 billion yuan RMB. The February box office was almost 6.9 billion yuan, the first time that it exceeded the North American market to be first in the world. In February records broke in the Mainland film market. With the Spring Festival and Valentine's Day slots, the Mainland had 192 million viewers in February. National film MERMAID (MEI YUN YU) broke 3 billion RMB to surpass MONSTER HUNT as the highest grossing film in Chinese box office history and the first film to pass 3 billion in the Mainland box office. THE MONKEY KING 2 (SAI YAU GEI ji SUEN NG HUNG SAM DA BAK GWUT JING) and FROM VEGAS TO MACAU 3 (DOH SING FUNG WON 3) followed with 116 and 109 million RMB respectively. The three films contributed to 78.9% of the total February box office. Some analyses claimed that China would likely become the world's largest box office market in as soon as 2017. * (2016/03/17) The Hollywood Reporter yesterday reported that Johnnie To Kei Fung was preparing for ELECTION 3 (HAK SEH WUI 3), which will be slated for a 2018 production start. To Sir reportedly has already completed the script, but because it was rather long he still did not know which part he would use. Last year TO Sir mentioned that he would make the final chapter of ELECTION and planned to start work in two years. Reportedly the third film will sweep into politics through mobsters to throw shadows at certain people. If the film was made this way, who knows how the authorities will respond. To Sir's company has always had Mainland company support. His subject might also face pressure, thus the production date was left dangling. Yesterday To Sir's company chief Elaine said, "It's been talked about for a very long time, but it won't be possibly to start production in the next two years because Mr. To's schedule is already full. I believed he won't be able to do this so soon." * (2016/03/17) The Chapman To Man Chak starred, Herman Yau Lai To directed film THE MOBFATHERS (SUEN LO DANG) released another trailer. In the film Ah Jat explained why he liked to make mob films. "Mob films have always been our Hong Kong film leader, whatever subjects that don't pass inspection like prostitution, gambling and drugs we are making them all." Obviously the film was challenging the Mainland censors. Indeed MOB had many bloody scenes. Gregory Wong Chung hiu even had to wear a sex toy and jump up and down. Wong Chung Hiu in the film played homosexuals with Ken Hung Cheuk Lap. In a bath house scene in order for Hung Cheuk Lap to have something in his hand, he wore this prop. As for foul language, Ah Jat asked, "You have to look at how reasonable it is, how can you possibly make a mob film without foul language?" He even said that the entertaining part about mob films is seeing people's struggle of power and desire, which coincidentally matched quite well with today's Hong Kong political ecology. * (2016/03/17) The film HEAVEN IN THE DARK (UM SIK TIN TONG)'s director Steve Yuen Kim Fai led actors Jacky Cheung Hok Yau, Karena Lam Ka Yun and Michelle Wai Si Nga to to attend a forum at the university and have exchanges with students. When the actors walked across the school students cheered. "Lam Ka Yun you are very pretty" could be heard everywhere. Director and husband Yuen Kim Fai could not help but reply jokingly, "Don't flirt with my wife again!" Ka Yun could not have felt sweeter. Hok Yau was asked to compare working with the then new comer Lam Ka Yun in JULY RHAPSODY (NAM YUN SEI SUP) to working with new comer Wai Si Nga this time. He said that both are good actors. Ka Yun was luckier. Her character had an important position and thus had more potential; Wai Si Ngai also gave her all but was not as lucky. The film focused on him and Ka Yun, but she too performed very well. * (2016/03/17) The Asian Film Award Academy and high class American jewelry label Hearts On Fire organized the 10th Asian Film Awards welcome party at the Conrad Hotel in Macau. The event presented AFA Rising Stars to Pakho Chau and Korean star Clara Lee for their outstanding performance in their Asian film careers. Clara thanked the fans for their support and thanked her team and people who have helped her. She will continue to do her best with every role. Pakho Chau thanked the event for giving him the award. "This is my first acting award. Today I am very happy and very touched because this is a recognition of all the hard work since I started. It also represents everyone's recognition of my acting. In the past, I have always worked very hard, I would remind and alert myself all the time to keep learning, examining, improving. Because opportunities are only for those who are prepared, I would grasp every character and do my best in every scene. I also hope that I can be a role model for young people, bring the society even more positive energy, live happily together with everyone so life can be even more exciting." * (2016/03/17) Janice Man Wing Shan earlier worked on a film poster for her new film NESSUN DORMA (HUNG SAU WAN MEI SHUI), which regrettably did not pass censorship inspection. The new film was even given a category III film rating. JM said, "It's beyond an actor's control. The story is a little sensitive, but I feel that this decision is a little conservative. Category III is not necessarily something negative. If it can be more entertaining and go further, why not? Regrettably some viewers will not be able to see what they want to see." * (2016/03/17) On April 1st superstar Leslie Cheung Kwok Wing would have passed away for 13 years. September 12th would have been his 60th birthday. Leslie's former manager Chan Suk Fun yesterday said that she decided to start Les FANmily because Leslie left a lot of valuables like clothing, photos and other items, all of which were priceless in the eyes of fans. Thus she wanted to find an ideal place for a memorial hall where a group of capable and selfless people would protect Leslie's items and put them on displays for fans. She was also interested in opening a Leslie cafe to fulfill her late friend's wish. As for why she will hold an event on the 2nd instead of the 1st, she said that she could not get a venue for the 1st. * (2016/03/17) Media Asia Film yesterday held a Hong Kong International Film and Television Market press conference with actors from three lands on both sides of the strait and many award winner filmmakers to announce the details and the collaborations of this and next year's film projects. Attending were boss Peter Lam Kin Ngok, actors Nick Cheung Ka Fai, Francis Ng Chun Yu, Charmaine Sheh Si Man, Jordan Chan Siu Chun, Gordon Lam ka Tung, Darren Wang, Vincent Zhao Wenzhou, Simon Yam Tat Wa, Zhang Tianai, Tommy Wong Kwong Leung and others. Cheung Ka Fai, Ng Chun Yu and Ah Sheh shared their film LINE WALKER (SI TOH HUNG JEH)'s production experience. Ka Fai revealed that during the Lunar New Year he worked on location in Brazil. He planned on bringing the the Fish Prawn Crab dice game to have a little fun with the production team there, but as soon as he said it, it became Ka Fai will bring fresh seafood from Hong Kong. The crew even prepared a kitchen for him. Ka Fai did not know whether to laugh or cry from the misunderstanding. Ah Sheh and Chun Yu who did not get to go to Brazil joked, "If I was in Brazil I definitely would have hired a killer to kill Ka Fai, how can there be no food." Director Man Wai Hung said that during the gun fight scene, shots rang out from another hill. Ka Fai was asked whether it was very dangerous, he said that the location was the slum. At the time the police escorted them from the hotel to the location. The two police cars after reaching the foot of the hill immediately stopped because the police could not enter. The team then was transferred to local security to be escorted to the location that had bullet holes on the wall. Reportedly they exchanged fire earlier, luckily when they were there nothing happened. Ka Fai even joked, "I don't know if because we paid enough protection money, we were able to safely work." Ah Sheh said that last time on television she already went very far for her character, with comedy, family and love. This time she showed her action potential and almost died from fighting in every scene. Otherwise no one would show up to save herself. She even had injury make up for 1/3 of the time. This time she fought very valiantly. At the same time Ah Sheh had many car chases and even had to drive in a race. Ka Fai after learning that the action director was Chin Ka Lok jokingly yelled at him. "Are you kidding, I will file a complaint against him." Ah Sheh admitted that she fought very hard, but it was not Chin Ka Lok's fault. The story required it, but she fought nonstop. Luckily she did not bleed for real and she reminded herself to be careful. Chun Yu in the film also had many gun fights. He said that tonight he will go out with the stunt team. Actually they were quite the gossip, but from them he learned how to protect himself. During the gun scenes they were very professional, but after the cameras were off they were housewives. Darren Wang, Zhang Tianai, Simon Yam Tat Wa at the Entertainment Expo promoted their film NOVOLAND THE DREAM SPINNER (GAU CHU JUEN). Yam Tat Wa joked that in the film he was not from Earth, this film was not shot on Earth either but on Mars. "In this era they could be fantastic, having it all and more. I came from Mars." Darren Wang revealed that in the film he had many action scenes and hoped that he would not get hurt. Has his contract termination with former manager Angie Chai been resolved? His current manager immediately ran interference and asked reporters to ask about the film again. Darren Wang however said that it has been taken care of and he will focus on making a good film. This will be his first film after being freed. Will he have any kiss scene with Zhang Tianai in the film? He tried to avoid the subject. "We will spend a lot of time together, normally we would move our arms and legs around." Zhang Tianai said that she was very nervous to face a god like Darren Wang. Jordan Chan Siu Chun and Gordon Lam Ka Tung promoted TRIVISA (SHU DAI CHIU FUNG). Ka Tung during the interview kept complaining about his role being very broke, with only one knife. On the other hand he saw fellow criminal Siu Chun driving a pretty car, smoking a cigar, using M16, they were drastically different. He said that producer Johnnie To Kei Fung really took care of Siu Chun. Siu Chun arrogantly said that he did not even have a single stunt, only a struggle scene. However Siu Chun admitted that the story was less than accurate. Ka Tung who made a living with only a knife was described as short but capable. He agreed, "That's right, Siu Chun is big but impotent, haha." Vincent Zhao Wenzhou and Sammo Hung Kam Bo will work together on GOD OF WAR (JIN SUN CHIK GAI GUONG). Zhao Wenzhou will work with Big Brother Hung for the first time and thought that it will be very fun. They have met before but this time will be their first film together. MANHUNT's Japanese hunk Masaharu Fukuyama was unable to attend but sent a video to show his support. He first introduced himself in Cantonese in the film and happily said that this time they will shoot in Osaka, a city that he really liked. He definitely will take care of the cast. He looked forward to working with Zhang Hanyu and John Woo (Ng Yu Sum) very much. Zhang had a presence and Woo motivated him very much during his Japanese location scouting. * (2016/03/17) The TVB, Warner Brothers and China Media Capital formed new film Flagship Entertainment yesterday held a press conference. The company announced that in the next two years it will release 12 films with top filmmakers in Hong Kong, Hollywood and the Mainland to bring the Chinese world and the global film audience a series of surprises, and with that promote Chinese film industry as the creative center of world film. TVB chief Charles Chan Kwok Keung, CMC chief Li Ruigang and Warner Brothers chief Kevin Tsujihara yesterday host the unveiling ceremony. A series of new films were announced, including the Lau Tak Wa, Huang Xiaogang and Wong Cho Lam starred film MISSION MILANO (WONG PAI DAU WONG PAI), the Peter Chan Ho Sun directed MURDER OF THE HUSBAND (JEUNG YUEN LUNG SAT FU ON), the Stephen Fung Tak Lun directed THE ADVENTURERS, the Wen Zhang directed WHEN LARRY MEETS MARY. CMC chief Li Ruigang said that half a year ago when Chairman Xi Jinping visited the U.S. he confirmed that China and the U.S. should further their industry collaborations, which enabled the three companies to open Flagship Entertainment this time. Warner Brothers Entertainment chief Kevin Tsujihara felt that China is the world's second largest film market, which the U.S. would like have long term collaboration and cultural exchanges with in terms of production and distribution. TVB's Lee Bo On said that he was very honored to be able to work with two giants in the industries. This was the first Chinese U.S. cultural alliance, through which he hoped to elevate TVB's quality. In addition after the Mainland market opened Hong Kong film and television showed signs of life again. He looked forward to Hong Kong to be able to use its unique assets to provide on and off screen talent. TVB will also play an assistance unit role to provide a promotional platform for new films. Then Lau Tak Wa, Wong Cho Lam and Wong Jing introduced MISSION MILANO. Brother Jing praised Cho Lam as a recently popular comedy actor. Producer Wa Jai said that although he has worked with Wong Jing many times, each time was short. When the host asked him about his character, he said that it was a secret that he could not reveal. After the ceremony, Wong Cho Lam and his wife Leanne Li Yanan were interviewed. Risen to become a film company boss, Cho Lam revealed that at the end of the year he will make a new film and planned to take half a year to prepare for it. His said that his wife was already a company board member as she "knew a lot". Cho Lam said that MISSION MILANO has already completed its production. Did he ask Wa Jai for advice for film investment? He said, "On the set sometimes we would chat a little, which already had some golden words that are like putting money in my pocket." Now with a big hose like Flagship, Cho Lam stressed that he still suffered his own losses on his productions. "Many examples have been small investments big rewards, I don't dare to lose other people's money!" Because he was busy with television series and variety programs, would he not have time to have a child with his wife? Li Yanan cut in. "During this period we don't get to make a child." Cho Lam helplessly said, "Actually we don't have to answer in too much detail, we can just give the run around. For now this year we won't have a baby, we have to build a good foundation first." The Fung Tak Lun directed THE ADVENTURES will start production in mid May. The lead will be Feng Shaofeng, but the lead actress has not been decided yet. Will he direct and star? He said, "No, with my own movie I have to focus on directing. I may be able to guest star." Will he invite his friend Daniel Wu (Ng Yin Cho) to play a role? Fung Tak Lun said that he too will be very busy, in addition the characters will not be right for him. 51% of Flagship Entertainment belongs to the China Media Capital led financial group, 49% to Warner Brothers. 10% of CMC's share belongs to TVB. Its headquarter will be in Hong Kong, with branch offices in Los Angeles and Beijing. Its goal is to explore and produce Chinese and English films for global market distribution, and dive into the industrialization and professionals that Hong Kong as the important Chinese film industry base created over the years. The news of its settlement in Hong Kong received enthusiastic welcome and high level of attention from the Hong Kong government, film industry, domestic and overseas media alike. Flagship Entertainment since announcing its establishment last September has already planned a series of film project. In the next two years it will release 12 films, including MEG (KUI CHI SA), MURDER OF THE HUSBAND (JEUNG YUEN LUNG SAT FU ON), BEAUTIFUL COMA, MISSION MILANO (WONG PAI DAU WONG PAI), THE ADVENTURES, WHEN LARRY MEETS MARY, MISS CONGENIALITY, BLENDED, CHINESE WALL STREET (JUNG GOK WA YI GAI), AGENT BAIYUN, CRATER (TIN FOR), WISH DRAGON (HUI YUEN SUN LUNG). The genres involved will be disaster, action, drama, suspense, romance, comedy, animation and others. MEG will bring a thrilling viewing experience as the first truly meaningful Chinese disaster epic. The Peter Chan Ho Sun directed MURDER OF THE HUSBAND was based on the Republic's most famous case that rocked the Bund. A woman accused of killing her husband experienced one after another death sentence trials as the world and history changed. The character's turbulent life showed the people, events and emotions in a world of historical changes to discuss in details ultimate key elements of humanity and life like fairness, justice, rights and reputation. The romantic comedy WHEN LARRY MEETS MARY is about a couple that grew up together but something always set them off track. It will be the directing debut of Wen Zhang. * (2016/03/17) Taiwan artist Rene Liu (Lau Yeuk Ying) and Tin Kai Man yesterday at the 14th Hong Kong Asia Film Financing Forum awards won awards. The Milk Tea directed, Sylvia Chang (Cheung Ngai Ga) produced film LIEUTENANT YI (YI FU GUOON) won the Wanda Film Award and received HK$ 100,000 cash prize. The Tin Kai Man produced film HYPNOTIZE THE JURY (CHUI MIN CHOI KUET) received the Network of Asian Fantastic Films grand prize. The film will represent Hong Kong in July at the Korean film festival but will not receive any cash prize. Milk Tea hoped to make a film about interpersonal relationships and could leave people with a deep impression. Did Chang Ngai Ga give any advice from the sideline? She said, "She is a strict mentor who is able to give me a lot of advice. When she learns that I am in competition, she wants me to take the film even better. Sister Chang and I have discussed the script many times, I hope to be able to meet my own demands. (Do you want to act or direct?) Film is very interesting; but I like to be an actor, to be able to experience different lives. Other positions give me different feeling." [ BLAH OF THE WEEK ] Columns, Reviews, Interviews 1. MING PAO DAILY, MARCH 20 2016, FILM WORDS A BRIDE FOR RIP VAN WINKLE LEAVES ITS STORY UNEXPLAINED Shunji Iwai's new film A BRIDE FOR RIP VAN WINKLE is even stranger. Haru Kuroi plays a beautiful bride in an unhappy marriage. She also runs into an odd man Go Ayano and adult video wild girl Cocco, and a series of adventures ensues. The story is rather commonplace yet very special. Shunji Iwai maintains his unconventional talent for romance. Yet when I watched the two hour release I felt that the story was left unexplained. In particular the odd man repeatedly "sets up" the female protagonist but seemingly has feelings for her. His state of mind becomes a mystery and probably would have more to be told. Who knows how the three hour director's edition will be like, reportedly there is an even longer television version. Among Shunji Iwai's films LOVE LETTER was the most conventional, later the more he worked the weirder his films became. In the Japanese title A BRIDE OF RIP VAN WINKLE, Rip Van Winkle was an early American classic protagonist. I too do not understand what he has to do with the story. Last week was the eve of the Easter slot, new releases could not compete with two big films that were released the week before, LONDON HAS FALLEN and GODS OF EGYPT. They could not even catch up to the New Spring releases MERMAID (MEI YUN YU) and DEADPOOL, which made them serious disappointments. On top of the box office was LONDON HAS FALLEN with HK$ 5.57 million. Over two weeks it accumulated HK$ 11 million, exceeding its predecessor OLYMPUS HAS FALLEN's HK$ 9.53 million three years ago with a rather decent showing; GODS OF EGYPT made HK$ 5.41 million in second place, over two weeks it made HK$ 10.83 million. The two big films were neck in neck; MERMAID made HK$ 4.75 million in third place, over six weeks it made HK$ 58.49 million; DEADPOOL made HK$ 40.7 million in fourth place, over five weeks it made HK$ 61.01 million and still slightly ahead of MERMAID. Conceivably as the Easter slot began, the race between the two would have a conclusion; THE DANISH GIRL made HK$ 3.33 million in fifth place, over three weeks it made HK$ 11.78 million. After THE REVENANT it was another Oscar award winning film that became a hit. Among the new releases, the best performer was THE DIVERGENT SERIES: ALLGEIANT. It made HK$ 3.14 million in sixth place, seemingly it would have no way to break through its predecessors. DIVERGENT made HK$ 8.79 million and INSURGENT made HK$ 9.56 million; costume zombie action film PRIDE AND PREJUDICE AND ZOMBIES made HK$ 1.46 million in ninth place. The audience has already grown tired of zombie films; Ethan and Joel Coen's new film HAIL, CAESAR made HK$ 629,000 in thirteenth place. Although "star studded" the film subject was alternative and had difficulty with bringing in the general audience; the Oscar nominated drama BROOKLYN made HK$ 240,000 in fifteenth place; famous Japanese director Kiyoshi Kurosawa's JOURNEY TO THE SHORE made HK$ 167,000 in eighteenth place, with advanced screenings it made HK$ 173,000. In the Mainland box office, the Hollywood animation blockbuster that was released a week before, ZOOTOPIA made 577.94 million RMB in first place, over two weeks it made 733.94 million RMB. The U.S. released the film simultaneously with the Mainland and made U$ 148.55 million; this film will open next week in Hong Kong and compete with this week's release KUNG FU PANDA 3. IP MAN 3 made 258.21 million RMB in second place, over two weeks it made 727.71 million RMB in a rather decent performance; the film in Hong Kong made HK$ 60.14 million, in an almost ten to 1 "golden ratio" with the Mainland box office. This film was released in the U.S. in late January and made US$ 2.67 million in an average showing. The new release GODS OF EGYPT made 129.51 million RMB in third place; MERMAID made 65.96 million RMB in fourth place, over five weeks it made 3,346,820,000 RMB; the new release romantic film SPICY HOT IN LOVE made 15.51 million RMB in fifth place. - LAM KAM BO 3. TA KUNG PAO, MARCH 17 2016, ASIAN FILMS IGIRL LEARNS HUMANITY WITHIN LAUGHTER Last week, artificial intelligence further challenges humanity as AlphaGo defeated the 18 time world go champion Lee Sedol by four matches to one and proved computer programs can already have the abilities of a top human go player. Under this type of backdrop, artificial intelligence themed science fiction films that have been popular in recent years become real. Hong Kong film IGIRL (IGIRL MUNG CHING YUN) opens at this time, which cannot be any more coincidental. - HUNG KWONG In IGIRL's story the Dior Cheng Yi Kin played protagonist and his two friends (Dominic Ho Ho Man and Lam Tsz Chung) all have their hearts broken. In the end he purchased while drunk a robotic lover called iGirl 001 (Chrissie Chau Sau Na) home. His friends also followed suit and bought 002 (Connie Man Hoi Ling) and 003 (Joyce Cheng Yun Yi). The three robots obey their every wish, only they still need the protagonist to guide them to the real feeling of being human. When the three "couples" begin to improve, the three men's former lovers decide to win them back...... The Golden Age Hong Kong film excelled in "absorbing" foreign film subjects. Italian director Lina Wertmuller's SWEPT AWAY brought us FASCINATION AMOUR (OI CHING MUNG WAN HO), French director Luc Besson's NIKITA brought us BLACK CAT (HAK MAU). Now this IGIRL probably is closer to Korean director Kwak Jae-Yong's Japanese film CYBORG SHE, but its content is obviously under the influence of recent Hollywood films EX MACHINA and HER's "artificial lover" films. With appearance or intelligence that highly resembles the real thing, for technological products and human interaction the most important is to learn "human nature" process in the process. It is also this IGIRL's main idea. Low Creative Setting Of course, this is not the Hong Kong film about robots. As early as a quarter century ago, Jamie Luk Kim Ming made ROBOTRIX (NUI GEI HAI YUN). It gave the foreign film ROBOCOP a complete makeover, a "science fiction film" that mixes elements like crime and sex. At the time the selling point is bringing together female stars of Hong Kong, Taiwan and Japan and release the film as a category III film. However the film probably stressed more the action film elements. Now the Hong Kong film rating system has been around for a long time, sex element is no longer fresh or box office guarantee. This IGIRL mixes genres in the same manner, but mainly it is a romantic comedy mixed with science fiction. The three iGirls are different from the ROBOTRIX sex symbols. Chau Sau Na, Man Hoi Ling and Cheng Yun Yi bring about something for everyone. Of course, iGirl's behavior and appearance still is the selling point that draws in male viewers. This has not changed over the years. Both learning to be "human", iGirls unlike their European and American "colleagues" do not have complicated thinking to lead them to power struggle and psychological tug of war, but to learn to experience lower level senses like sour, sweet, bitter and hot (although this problem probably should have been handled as early as the design phase). Of course this has to do with Hong Kong commercial film's lower market designation and existing bias against female characters. Actually, the Chinese film circile also rarely had examples of putting this type of mind philosophy into film stories. Asking who humanity is is not our culture and art creative trend. When robots appear in Chinese films, they are often stuck in comedic characters. Robot Configuration Overshadows Acting Of course, when humans play robots another result would also appear. Actors with more fame, outstanding features but relatively immature acting often give unexpected performances as robots. Actor superstar Arnold Schwarzengger was known for his stiff expression and sluggish delivery, but after playing a robot from the future in THE TERMINATOR he started to become famous. CYBORG SHE's lead actress Haruka Ayase actually also more or less had stiff acting and excelled in playing the "silly lady". Because they were playing robots, IGIRL's three actresses and that Hong Kong comedic performance that often gives people the impression of "plastic", "stiff", excessively exaggerating and forced funny also have been overshadowed by the "robot" configuration and seemed to feel reasonable. On the other hand, when Ekin Cheng was placed with the iGirls, he seemed to look a little old. Only as the artificial intelligence improves everyday, if stories like "AlphaGo Defeats World Go Champion" are run several more times, through the rendering of the general public media the stiff impression of "robots mean blunt and dull" would gradually vanish. After "artificial intelligence can be resourceful" becomes the new legend, not only robot girlfriends need to be even more lively and cute, even characters like the Terminator would no longer be able to cast actors without facial expressions like Schwarzenegger. 4. TA KUNG PAO, MARCH 17 2016, LIGHT SHADOW PATH "PITCHING IDEAS" DETERMINES SUCCESS OR FAILURE (2) Without any experience in "pitching ideas", people often make the mistake of wasting time. The other parties do not receive any information that they wanted, in addition the impression is worse than before "pitching ideas" as both sides' expectation has been completely ruined. The reason is actually very simple, people who are "pitching ideas" do not know that this process actually is very scientific. They cannot blind guess and anticipate, the mistakes that hey make are all subjective mistakes. Because they do not know that "pitching ideas" is a science, speakers can very easily inject their own feeling as they think that "courage" can score points. Some are like rookie fighters who want to knock out the opponents in one punch, so they put themselves in a "genius" level position and instead make people laugh. In the film industry, "pitching ideas" chances are numerous. Experienced directors are mostly experts, in a few words they can express the key to their projects. Experienced "listeners" also grasp very quickly, the entire process may take less than ten minutes. Other discussions may be how to carry out the ideas or small talk (because they have been rejected). On the surface, inexperienced directors or people who are "pitching ideas" have no advantage. Actually they do, at least they have not had any bad record. The preparation for "pitching ideas" is important. If you while "pitching" explain again what people already know (like script or story content), you are wasting time. In other words, the content of the "pitch" has to be concise and brief. The mistake that people often make is teaching people their projects' market value, they are much more certain about that than you. You must understand that the question and answer segment is the most important. If handled poorly all your effort is wasted. For example like the "working with dogs" question last time, the person "pitching" actually twists facts to defend his own mistake. You can imagine the result. In another example for a school film, the "listener" asks what kind of school it is, the person "pitching" actually answers that he would look when the shoot goes on location. he does not know the question is the type of school and not the production location. The average person more or less has to prepare for questions and answers about the project. He or she would often forget that the question may be about the person who is "pitching ideas". People may invest over tens of millions on the project, they have to understand the person in charge. This also brings about another topic, the person "pitching" has to understand the "listener's" company and himself as well. Frequently seen in the film industry is the person "pitching ideas" to bosses and producers, but sometimes they also have the chance to run into the financial director. No one should think that they should "When you see a human, speak human" and talked about "profit and loss" with the financial director. You should focus on the ideas of the project itself. If the other party is a creator, your idea not only has to be clear but also thorough. Once a director said that his comedy material is very realistic and different from the average. The "listener" asks, "Can you cite an example?" The director is at a loss of words. Grasping the science of "pitching ideas" is already halfway to success. The other half is whether the idea itself is viable. - TIN LIK [ In Production Now/Soon ] THE BRINK Can : Kong Sau Lit : Wild Beast d. With the opening of the border to China, new codes and mores make their way into the world of the triads – and those who don’t adjust their business models have already lost. A genre film from Hong Kong that chooses to set its story during those years of turmoil is tantamount to a double swan song. For these political changes also effectively spelled the end of an independent Hong Kong cinema that was admired across Asia. One of the few directors who has continued to defend and develop the genre is Johnnie To. By producing TRIVISA, To is flying the flag for three up-and-coming directors who tell the stories of three legendary gangsters of the period. This is not an anthology film, but rather an overlapping story of men who become victims of their own legends. As chance brings them all together one day in the same restaurant on the Chinese side of the border, rumours swirl that the three are planning a joint coup. In elegant fashion, hype and hubris lead to their downfall. (Christoph Terhechte) MY WIFE IS A SUPERSTAR Can : Ngor Lo Por Hai d. The railway from Tianjin to Nanjing in East China became a key military transportation route, heavily guarded by Japanese soldiers. Railroad worker Ma Yuan leads a team of freedom fighters. Using his deep knowledge of the train network, he and his men sabotage it, ambushing Japanese soldiers and stealing supplies to feed the starving Chinese. Although the freedom fighters have no weapons of their own, they employ whatever tools are at hand, including shovels, loose railway track planks and diverted trains. The local Chinese call the unlikely heroes the "Railroad Tigers". The freedom fighters find themselves on the wrong side of the tracks when the Japanese send reinforcements to Shandong. In an act of defiance, Ma Yuan launches his most dangerous mission yet, blowing up a heavily-guarded railroad bridge. When the Japanese learn of the crippling plan, which will derail the war effort, the stakes are raised even higher. --- [ Entertainment URL ] MEDIA ASIA http://www.mediaasia.com EMPEROR MOTION PICTURES http://www.emp.hk PEGASUS MOTION PICTURES http://www.pegasusmovie.com WE PICTURES http://www.wepictures.com CINEMA POPULAR http://www.cinemapopular.com MEI AH http://www.meiah.com NEW ASIA ENTERTAINMENT GROUP http://www.aeghk.com GOLDEN SCENE http://www.goldenscene.com Commercial Radio http://www.crhk.com.hk Television Broadcast Limited http://www.tvb.com.hk --- [ NORTH AMERICA AREA CONCERTS ] * VIVIAN CHOW DATE AND TIME: Sunday, June 12 2016 @ 7PM Monday, June 13 2016 @ 8:30 PM VENUE LOCATION: Avalon Ballroom Theatre Niagara Fallsview Casino Resort 6380 Fallsview Boulevard, Niagara ON L2G 7X5 Canada http://www.fallsviewcasinoresort.com/entertainment/event/vivian-chow TICKET OUTLET LOCATIONS: TICKETMASTER CANADA http://www.ticketmaster.ca/event/100050659E6516E7 http://www.ticketmaster.ca/event/100050659E6216E5 * KAREN MOK REGARDEZ WORLD TOUR DATE AND TIME: Sunday, June 12 2016 @ 7:30 PM VENUE LOCATION: Casino Rama 5899 Rama Road Rama ON L0k 1T0 Canada TICKET PRICES: CA$ 388, 298, 198, 168, 98, 68 TICKET OUTLET LOCATION: ONLINE: HTTPs://www.casinorama.com/live/ * KAREN MOK REGARDEZ WORLD TOUR DATE AND TIME: Friday, June 10 2016 @ 7:30 PM VENUE LOCATION: The Forum 3900 W Manchester Blvcd.
