Lai Kai Ming's resume included television series GHETTO JUSTICE, ON THE FIRST BEAT and film THE KING OF DEBT COLLECTING AGENT (SAU SO WONG). Many artists expressed regret after receiving the news. Seeing him as a true friend, Wong Chau Sun admitted, "You know how much temper and foul language are there in this business, but he didn't! He was so kind that he would be bullied. (When was the last time you saw him?) Probably over a year ago. He said that he wanted to start an acting company and make television series. He had a pretty good plan!" Myolie Wu Hung Yi and Bosco Wong Chung Chak worked with him on the series WARS OF IN LAWS. Hung Yi said, "last year he said that he wanted to work with me. I never thought that he would pass away like this. I hope his family won't be too heartbroken, my condolences." Chung Chak wished that his family's emotions would settle down as soon as possible. Michael Tse Tin Wa admitted that the last time he saw Lai Kai Ming was last year. "He met with me to talk about Mainland projects and films, at the time he was in great shape, very alert." Lai Kai Ming's son Lai Chi Ling said that a low key memorial will take place on the 22nd, then his remains will be cremated at Cape Collinson. * (2016/03/09) Taiwan artist Tiffany Hsu starred in the film TAG ALONG, which will open in the middle of the month in Hong Kong as she will face old flame Ethan Juan (Yuen King Tin)'s film. Tiffany Hsu had a kiss scene that exceeded her own sexy standard with lead actor River Huang He for a breakthrough performance. "With kiss scenes I inevitably feel nervous, but Huang He is a very gentle person. He makes me slowly relaxed so it wouldn't be as awkward. Huang He's lips are thicker, which feels very comfortable to me. Unknowingly I have forgotten everything around us." * (2016/03/09) The 2016 Macau International Film Festival Aries Awards took place last night in Studio City. IP MAN 3 won Best Producer and Best New Actor. Mike Tyson thanked Donnie Yen Chi Tan and the IP MAN 3 team and said that accepting the award was the happiest moment for him. He said that he was very happy to win the award, very pleased to have worked with Yen Chi Tan and with IP MAN 3's box office. Did he know that IP MAN 3's box office was being questioned? Tyson said that he only worked on the film so he had no idea. He also would like to work with more Chinese people on movies, as he would like to work with Jackie Chan. Song Seung-heon was interviewed on the red carpet. He said that lately the Chinese film MONSTER HUNT has caught his attention. Currently dating Mainland star Liu Yifei, when asked about any wedding plan he replied in Putonghua, "Thank you!" Qin Hao accepted the Best Actor award from Cecilia Yip Tung. He thanked his parents for not giving him any burden and thanked his wife. Qin Hao was asked why he did not attend with his wife Annie Yi. He said that his wife had to take care of something at home, but since he wore his wedding ring it met that she was there too. Soon to be a father, he was asked about the pregnancy. He said that everything was ready for the child. In June he will stop working completely to be with his wife. He said that his wife was even prettier since the pregnancy. Was he nervous? He said, "I am not nervous, I am very happy." Cheung Chi Lam was asked why his look has not changed in 20 years. He joked that he started as a child star, only that everyone grew up with him. "I know what is happening with me, I am getting old everyday with everyone, only outsiders can't tell. I am a normal person, all natural with no additive." Returning to Macau, Chi Lam said that he had a special relationship with Macau. Thus his films in Macau would perform well and leave beautiful memories. Yesterday he came to support Macau. Speaking of the Mainland authorities' strict investigation of the film IP MAN 3's box office, he said, "I am not certain about the details, but I really like this film. I paid actual money for a ticket." * (2016/03/09) Veteran media person To Wai Tung yesterday morning passed away from kidney failure at age 75. To Sir was outstanding in film and show business public relations, as well as a living dictionary of the film industry. To Wai Tung was artist Helen To Yu Fung's father. In his youth he was in charge of the Golden Harvest film promotional and advertising departments for years. In 2010 he even published FAN SING SIM SIM, which exposed secrets of film stars like Jackie Chan, Anita Mui Yim Fong, Teresa Tang Lai Kwan, Tina Dik Na and Joey Wang Cho Yin. In addition, To Sir even published other books. To Yu Fung said that her father around 11:30AM due to kidnap failure passed away peacefully. Her father last week was not feeling well last week and went to the hospital. She was in Japan for a TVB travel program when she suddenly received news from her mother. She decided to immediately return to Hong Kong to be with her father. To Yu Fung also said, "Papa needed dialysis for the past few years, lately his health deteriorated. He was already 75. Papa said that to him his greatest reward was seeing his daughter working hard. So later I will go to Japan to continue the shoot." Carina Lau Ka Ling last night attended an art event. Speaking of To Wai Tung's passing, Ka Ling said that she already knew him when he was at Golden harvest. His passing was quite regrettable. She felt that everyone should cherish what they have, seeing so many people's passing she felt that this year the "monkey" was rather vicious. She hoped that everyone would pay attention to their health. In particular with the unstable weather she too got sick. Reportedly Nicholas Tse Ting Fung successfully proposed to Faye Wong. Ka Ling said, "I don't know, don't ask me. I am not her spokesperson, I don't know if she wanted me to talk about it or not. Even if I did I didn't represent her. The opinions expressed by me had nothing to do with them!" Some said that Faye Wong did not want to wed for a third time so she did not agree. Ka Ling smiled and asked, "Where did you hear that? People are probably just guessing!" Sammo Hung Kam Bo has known To Wai Tung for over 40 years. Back then they battled shoulder to shoulder at Golden Harvest. Hung Kam Bo was saddened to hear about the passing of a former colleague. "One after another old friend passed away. The older I get, the fewer old friends I have." He praised To as a very responsible promotional executive, the rarest of which was he was not arrogant at all. Kara Wai Ying Hung also has known To Wai Tung for over 20 years and worked together at Golden Harvest for 7 or 8 years. She said, "When I just got the news I was stunned for a few seconds. I felt really upset inside. Back then we often went abroad for work, and he really took care of those around him. That kind of care was like taking care of a family!" She revealed that in recent years she has seen To Wai Tung on different occasions. The most memorable time was two years ago when she grabbed him by the hand and said that Yu Fung was pretty and talented. To Wai Tung at the time could not be happier. Artists Richard Ng Yiu Han last night attended a film premiere and was surprised to hear about To Wai Tung's passing. He praised him for his optimism. The last time he saw him was two or three years ago. "I remember the first time I saw his daughter on a program, I sent a message to congratulate him on having a very talented daughter." * (2016/03/09) The film KILL TIME (MAU SAT CHI SHUI NIN WA) will open tomorrow. The film was based on Cai Jun's novel of the same name. Director Fruit Chan Gor asked popular female star Angelababy and Ethan Juan (Yuen King Tin) to star. In the story an online store "witch district" claims to be able to sell you anything you want. Office worker Siu Mak after her father passed away on the job read his diary, in which he mentioned that a purple scarf caught his eyes. She went to the "Witch District" to look for it, despite her friend Chin Ling urged her to beware of needing to pay the "witch's price" after becoming addicted she still could not help but visit the site again and again. Chin Ling died of unknown causes out of the blue, Siu Mak gradually was swept into the death spiral. She again purchased lost memories from the "Witch's District". The more memories she bought the closer she was to the truth. She discovered that she was closer to her death as well. At the same time she was reminded of her first love with a guy, which seemed to be connected to the case that her father was investigating before his demise. * (2016/03/09) In the film HEAVEN IN THE DARK (UM SIK TIN TONG), Jacky Cheung Hok Yau truly put in a lot of effort. Director Steven Yuen Kim Fai admired Hok Yau's professionalism very much. Earlier after a French kiss with Karena Lam Ka Yun Hok Yau had to deliver his lines. The director said that Hok Yau came up with the lines himself. Hok Yau this time played Paster To, who also preached on the stage. While talking about the temptation of the apple, he even asked the audience for one. In the film Michelle Wai Si Nga also wanted to find an apple for Cheung Hok Yau but lost to Ka Yun. Finally Hok Yau chose Lam Ka Yun's apple and devoured it whole. * (2016/03/08) The Donnie Yen Chi Tan starred IP MAN 3 made around HK$ 60 million in Hong Kong. It opened in the Mainland last Friday and made 468 million RMB over 3 days, an even better performance than the Lunar New Year film MERMAID (MEI YUN YU). Many in Mainland media and online communities have accused IP MAN 3 of box office fixing. The film authority even issued a statement two nights ago to ask for the fixed box office numbers not to be counted. The film authority issued a statement about box office fixing. "The national film ticketing integrated information system and various ticketing platforms could not include or recognize box office obtained through illegal means. The box office information that has already been included in the platform will be removed." The statement asked for an immediate stop of improper marketing behavior and might even take legal action. Raymond Wong Pak Ming's Pegasus Motion Pictures sold IP MAN 3's Mainland rights for almost 300 million RMB to Mainland businessman Shi Jianxiang's Max Screen company. Then Shi Jianxiang wanted to raise funding with this film as a financial investment project, which the officials halted. However the financial expert Shi Jianxiang of course knew how to promote the film with other methods. Pegasus Motion Pictures yesterday also issued a statement and stressed that it was only responsible for the film production. IP MAN 3 has already been sold to Shi Jianxiang. Clearly it had to draw a line. "The film was sold the various release rights around the world to distribution companies via traditional sales method, including Mainland China. Like in the U.S., Taiwan and Malaysia, all rights were the responsibility of the domestic distribution companies' own promotional methods and release scheduling. Pegasus was responsible for the material and assisting with coordinating with actors for promotions there. We do not know anything about the national distribution method." * (2016/03/08) The Chrissie Chau Sau Na, Dior Cheng Yi Kin, Jeana Ho Pui Yu, Dominic Ho Ho Man and Connie Man Hoi Ling starred new film IGIRL (iGirl Mung Ching Yun) last night held its premiere. The actors competed in sweet poses. When Dominic picked up Connie her under garment showed, making it awkward for her as she kept fixing her clothes with her hand! Dominic later still denied everything, "We planned it before hand. Since I know she took precaution against wardrobe malfunction anyway. I thought the whole thing looked very pretty, very sweet!" Connie awkwardly said, "Today I wore two dresses and a pair of pants underneath. (Why were you moving around so awkwardly?) I wanted to fix my pants! With Dominic keeping an eye on me I am very at ease." Chau Sau Na who recently was rumored to have hooked up with a rich kid and suddenly got rich denied the rumor. "I don't have any rich kid friend! I am still single, I am not worried that rumors would affect my image. (They say you are suddenly rich?) My life is normal, as long as I can take care of myself and my parents I am fine. (Your old flame said if you were dating then he wished you well.) I don't have any old flame! (Former boyfriend?) Since he is a former boyfriend, it's in the past for a long time. I am not talking about that anymore!" Speaking of her interaction with Ekin Cheng in the film, she said, "I had to stiffen my entire person for the performance, after work I felt very tired." Cheng Yi Kin admitted that he had intimate scenes with Chau Sau Na. "In one scene she was out of battery. I had to pick her up. I even had to pick her up many times before the shoot was done. Because it was the first day of work, it was awkward. (Did you have any physical contact?) Some! (Did you touch her chest?) Nothing that exaggerated!" * (2016/03/08) The Derek Tsang Kwok Cheung, Eric Kwok Wai Leung, Lam Suet, Angie Chui Bik Ka and Stanley Fung Shui Fan starred Sun Entertainment Culture film ROBBERY (LO LUP) received a category III rating. Its poster design due to blood and violence did not pass the censors' inspection. Earlier the censors replied with over 10 corrections that the poster would be required to make, but the film company worried that after the changes it would lose the film's selling point completely. Thus it decided against making the changes. The poster will only appear overseas. Director Fire Lee (For For) described this film as the most absurd dark comedy of the past decade and praised Tsang Kwok Cheung for a convincing portrayal of wasted youth. Lam Suet played a funny and cool convenience store manager. He walked around after being stabbed with a pair of scissors, which gave people belly ache from laughing. * (2016/03/08) Film industry new comers Jessie Li (Chun Xia) and Michael Ning (Bak Ji) yesterday with the film PORT OF CALL (DAP HUET CHUM MUI) won the 12th Hong Kong Film Critic Society Awards for Best Actor and Best Actress. The film even won the Best Picture. Director Philip Yung Chi Kwong wept tears of joy. Chun Xia said that she would like play a homosexual character, exploring a life that she normally would not live through the performance. Reporters jokingly asked if after working with Bak Ji she was afraid of men? She said, "I used to be afraid of men, but Bak Ji treated me very well and took great care of me. The feeling is like seeing each other again years after a divorce." Speaking of the Hong Kong Film Award Best Actress and Best New Performer nominations, Chun Xia sated that she was not confident about winning Best Actress. Her Best Actress rival Sylvia Chang (Cheung Ngai Ga) felt that actors should perform well, but they would rely on luck to win awards. In addition, Hong Kong Film Award Best Supporting Actor nominee Bak Ji said that he was very happy to be nominated with his good friend Louis Cheung Kai Chung. * (2016/03/08) As a member of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, Feng Xiaogang recently revealed that he was interested in starting a training school for basic technical abilities like props, lighting and costumes with Zhang Guoli, Jackie Chan and others. He lamented, "Directors, screen writers and others have professional education, but the basic jobs that film needs have no professional training. The hardest part about starting a school is the lack of teachers. Thus we plan to hire Hollywood instructors. The related courses will launch by next year." * (2016/03/07) The Donnie Yen Chi Tan and MaxZhang Jin starred IP MAN 3 already passed 400 million RMB in 60 hours. ShiFang Holding Limited invested heavily on IP MAN 3's Mainland box office right, so its president Shi Jianxiang and CEO Tsui Siu Ming were excited. Tsui Siu Ming estimated that the film will pass HK$ 500 million in three days. "The box office and the word of mouth have proven Shi Jianxiang and my unique insight, as we successfully targeted the Mainland film market's enormous potential and started the new generation of film distribution format with 'internet+film+financing'." Shi Jianxiang said, "Nowadays for a film to have a box office breakthrough, it must use the internet's 'instantaneous" advantage and financial concepts. When the capital market is allowed to merge with the film industry then it is able to have a breakthrough. The high quality of the film itself is also key." * (2016/03/06) The Donnie Yen Chi Tan starred Hong Kong film IP MAN 3 recently officially opened in the Mainland and made 350 million RMB over two days. Chi Tan admitted that he would pick up the pace for IP's international distribution. Recently busy with his Hollywood film he has begun his hellish training to keep up with co-star Vin Diesel. For IP's official Mainland release, Chi Tan took time off from the XXX 3 production to promote in China. Yesterday he again appeared at the Hangzhou press conference and visited 4 cinemas to meet with fans. IP in 16 hours already made over 100 million RMB, after two days in release it reached 350 million RMB. Chi Tan was rather pleased with the results. Chi Tan said, "I am very happy that so many viewers have shown their support. I always say that the audience has to like a movie for it to work. Honestly, this time IP's release date isn't all that great, I never expected that viewers would still remember to support the film at the movies despite work or school. I feel this good result is probably due to a group of loyal fans that IP MAN has already accumulated and the really great word of mouth. (What would you expect the Mainland box office will be?) I don't dare to say, but from the trend it shouldn't have a hard time with over 1 billion RMB. Today in Hangzhou, a 60 something granny came to support me after a several hour long car ride. She said that she has admired me for many years and I was very touched." Speaking of IP MAN 4's preparation, Chi Tan said, "It definitely won't take as long as IP 3's preparation. Later I will grab director (Wilson) Yip Wai Shun and producer (Raymond) Wong Pak Ming to sit down and talk. I hope IP 4's distribution will be more international and attract more Chinese and overseas fans." Reportedly IP 4 plans to start production in the middle of next year for a second half of 2018 release. The story is already being looked at. Chi Tan had to lose weight to play his character in IP 3, but for XXX 3 he had to work out for his special agent role. Speaking of this hellish training, Chi Tan said, "It's very hard to tell you the entire process, everyday I have to get rid of water, grease and waste. Actually working out isn't the toughest part. Instead for IP 3 I had to deliberate slim down, that's really tough because I like to eat." After finish IP 3's Mainland promotion, he will fly for over 30 hours to the Dominican Republic to continue work on XXX 3. "Lately I am used to taking flights, I will take advantage of the time to do some homework, study the script and watch movies for review." * (2016/03/06) The Stephen Chow Sing Chi directed film MERMAID (MEI YUN YU) has been going strong, since its Lunar New Year's Day release on the 8th it has made 3.25 billion RMB at the Mainland box office. Earlier the film even received the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television's approval to postpone its theatrical exit for three months. Other Lunar New Year Hong Kong films like FROM VEGAS TO MACAU 3 (DOH SING FUNG WON III) and THE MONKEY KING 2 (SAI YAU GEI ji SUEN NG HUNG SAM DA BAK GWUT JING) received SARFT approval to extend their run from cinema for a month. So far FROM made 1.1 billion RMB and MONKEY made 1.2 billion RMB. With MERMAID's over 3 billion the three Lunar New Year hits made over 5 billion RMB. * (2016/03/05) The "founding father of rotten gag", artist David Lo Dai Wai yesterday morning at 6:49AM passed away at the Eastern hospital at age 71. Started his career in 1968 he has been the host of many programs and participated in many series and film productions. The most memorable were his frequently rotten gags on the variety program ENJOY YOURSELF TONIGHT, his impersonation of other artists and celebrities that brought the audience endless joy. Frequently rumored to have health problems last year, David recently was again rumored to be severely ill. Earlier he admitted that his health condition was less than ideal on social media but told friends not to worry and continue to support his school. David yesterday morning passed away. Around 9AM, widow Mrs. Lo with friend Ting Yu, Ho Lai Chuen, Kam Kwong Sing and Cheung Sung Kei stepped out of the hospital room. Mrs. Lo said that David never gave up. "Yesterday his condition declined after dusk. (Did he use any morphine?) A little because I wanted him to sleep a little better. (Actually what kind of illness did he have?) No comment on personal matter like this, it's not intestinal cancer as rumored." Speaking of any last word from her husband, Mrs. Lo said that David hoped to spread positive energy and expand the classroom. She also revealed that she was packing up her husband's items. Will she hold a public memorial for her husband? She said, "A lot haven't been decided yet, when we have a decision (Eric) Tsang Chi Wai will make an announcement." Ting Yu who went to the hospital to bid farewell to David revealed that when his friend passed he did not shed any tear and he went peacefully. Former TVB executive Ho Lai Chuen also rushed to the hospital to see David off on his final journey and promised to publish his unreleased drafts again. The Performing Artist Guild also eulogized David on its official Weibo channel, expressed deep sorrow over his passing, thanked him for years of contribution to the Guild, for bringing laughter to the general public and sent its deepest condolences to David's family. David opened the "David Lo classroom" with talent training classes like hosting, voice work and children playgroups. The classroom was not opened for business yesterday, with a message that said, "Employees Away For Work" on the door and a number that Mrs. Lo picked up. She said that because she had to handle a few things the classroom will close for a few days. The classroom's facebook account has already turned its logo to black and white with Mrs. Lo's personal message, "Thank you everyone for your concern, condolences and blessings. AnAn has already returned to Heaven. I am grateful for your years of endless support love for him. Pineapple Head Sister (Mrs. Lo)" The Wong Ching Po directed film HAK GWAI (SCARING GHOST) also will have David's performance and will conceivably be his final work. This film with Charlene Choi Cheuk Yin and Michael Miu Kiu Wai will open next month. David Lo was originally named Lo Wing Fuk. Born in Shanghai in 1945, he graduated from Wan Yan College. In 1968 he enrolled in RTV's second training class. His brothers Lo Yuen and Siu Leung were famous hosts. Due to his outstanding ability to speak and quick responses, before graduating he was already assigned to host his first variety program. In 1975 he and Siu Leung after joining TVB joined ENJOY YOURSELF TONIGHT and served TVB for 17 and a half years. Lo Dai Wai excelled in impersonations and rotten gags, including impersonating Donny Summer (Ha Siu Sing), Bill Tung Biu and American magician David Copperfield. The most classic was his "Fat Swan Lake" performance with Lydia Shum Din Ha for the Po Leung charity show. He appeared in commercials, including an appearance as a rich kid in a rice commercial with the line, "The bills are so wrinkled, how do I spend them! Iron them again!" and his slang "AnAn" have all become classic! Lo Dai Wai participated in series like THE TWINS (JUET DOI SEUNG GIU) and THE MISADVENTURE OF ZOO (LAU MAN WONG DAI), NEVER DANCE ALONE (NUI YUN KUI LOK BO) was his final television series and his films included I LOVE HONG KONG (NGOR OI HK HOI SUM MAN SHUI). Lo Dai Wai served on the Hong Kong Performing Artist Guild council and even opened a school to train speaking abilities and voice work technique. TVB's comedy star of a generation passes away yesterday. TVB's Tsang Sing Ming expressed a great sense of sorrow and said that it was a loss to show business. TVB remembered this comedy star aired his interviews on last night's SCOOP segment FAREWELL Gag King David Lo. The CLUB SPARKLE interview special with David Lo and ENJOY YOURSELF TONIGHT members as guests will air late night tonight; programs that he, his brothers Lo Yuen and Siu Leung performed in like LIGHTER SIDE OF HONG KONG will air on TVB mobile television starting Monday for seven days. * (2016/03/05) Mainland star Bai Baihe, Nick Cheung Ka Fai, Ng See Yuen and Andrew Lau Wai Keung yesterday attended the Hong Kong Society of Cinematographers annual banquet. Cheung Ka Fai and Bai Baihe received the "Most Charming Actor and Actress of the Year In the Eye of Professionals". Bai Baihe attended in flats due to an injury from a Mainland reality show. She made the trip to Hong Kong to accept the award and said that she had to work hard on her Cantonese. She said that she was injured halfway through the program and has already dropped out. She said that currently she had no job on hand so she could rest. She said that in the summer she will work on the sequel to the film MONSTER HUNT. * (2016/03/05) Gordon Lam Ka Tung, Janice Man Wing Shan, Andrew Lam Man Chung, director Andrew Lau Wai Keung, Cecilia So Lai Shan, Sisley Choi Sze Bui and Michael Ning (Bak Ji) two nights ago attended the Hong Kong Federation of Filmmakers spring banquet. Nominated for the Hong Kong Film Award Best Supporting Actress this year, JM was too busy with her Mainland series to choose what she would wear. However she would take time off to return to Hong Kong to attend the event. As for her confidence level, JM said that she felt normal and revealed that when she was nominated for the first time she was so excited that she got drunk. "At the time I was on vacation with my family, I got drunk from the celebration!" JM also revealed that in her new film NESSUN DORMA (HUNG SAU WAN MEI SHUI) co-star Lam Ka Tung slapped her so hard that she ended up on her back. Ka Tung said, "As soon as I slapped her she did a 360 and fell to the floor. I was very scared! After hitting her she couldn't stop cry and had fingerprints on her face. Luckily we only needed one take!" Best Supporting Actor nominee Ah Chung said that he had no confidence to win. When asked if he would organize a concert for his 35th anniversary of his career, Ah Chung said that organizers have approached him but earlier when they applied for the Hong Kong Coliseum they were not approved. He was very disappointed. * (2016/03/05) The Donnie Yen Chi Tan starred film IP MAN 3 opened in Hong Kong on Christmas Eve last year and made over HK$ 60 million. The film opened in the Mainland on March 4th and has been rather popular. After 16 hours in release it passed 100 million yuan RMB to break a box office record. With advanced ticket box office the film has reached 170 million yuan and would have a chance to pass 200 million on its opening day. Although Chi Tan earlier was busy with his new Hollywood film in Canada, the Mainland audience was still very important to him. He took time to promote IP MAN 3 in the Mainland and visited Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou among other locations. Yesterday he stopped in Shenzhen and the entire cinema's audience fought for a photo with Chi Tan. One of the film's investors, Pegasus Motion Pictures' boss Raymond Wong Pak Ming was deeply pleased with the Mainland performance. "I am grateful! IP MAN 3 broke 100 million in 16 hours, broke IP MAN's record. I am really very happy. I will keep making good movies for everyone." * (2016/03/05) Dior Cheng Yi Kin and Chrissie Chau Sau Na promoted the film IGIRL (iGirl Mung Ching Yun) on the Cable program Film Montage. Playing a robot in the film, Sister Na was in love with Ekin. Their chemistry as a couple was better than before. Sister Na said, "I only took the role after I learned my co-star would be Ekin!" Ekin said that when he learned that a female artist would play a robot, he felt Chau Sau Na was the most suitable. "With her exquisite figure and delicate appearance she is a real version of the robot. Other than her no one would be better for the character." Chau Sau Na awkwardly laughed. * (2016/03/05) Golden Horse Best Actor Tommy Tam (Ti Lung) last December with his film THE KID FROM THE BIG APPLE (NGOR LOI JI NAU YEUK) won the Macau Film Festival Best Actor. Recently at the Malaysia premiere he was asked if he looked forward to winning the Hong Kong Film Award. He said that he would not think about it too much. Ti Lung in the film slapped his on screen daughter Jessica Hester Hsuan (Suen Huen). He joked that the career of anyone he has slapped, like Chow Yun Fat, Jackie Chan, Huang Xiaoming and Aaron Kwok Fu Sing, has taken off. He believed that Huen Suen will follow suit as well. * (2016/03/04) The Chapman To Man Chak produced and starred, Herman Yau Lai To directed category III film THE MOBFATHERS (SUEN LO DANG) reportedly through the mob's one vote per person leader election as satire of current affairs. Yesterday a trailer was released and clearly showed this battle of brawns and brains during the mob election, which was not less exciting than the earlier New Territories East Legislative Council by-election between the Pro-democracy Alvin Yeung Ngok Kiu and Pro-Beijing Holden Chow Ho Ting. However foul language, women and gang fights were naturally inevitable in a mob power struggle. Ah Jat even had a scene with a hot woman, and he put an unusual amount of effort into his performance. Behind the fists and the pillows in MOB, a lot of dialogues were full of wisdom and foresight that made people think. The Kenny Wong Tak Bun played police officer directly said that the election was fake. "Why bother, it's the same 3 old guys in charge no matter what." To Man Chak's rival Gregory Wong Hiu Chung said to a group of Wise Guys, "When choosing a boss, why do only 9 people hav the right to vote? Then you might as well not bother, when you vote everyone has to have a vote." The most brutal was the behind the scene mastermind Anthony Wong Chau Sun with a parody of the late American president Kennedy's quote. "Ask not what Jing Hing can do for you, ask for you can do for Jing Hing." If the film TEN YEARS was the shocking prophecy of Hong Kong's future, MOB would be a portrait of Hong Kong's current dilemma. In addition, on the poster, behind the three candidates To Man Chak, Wong Chung Hiu and Philip Keung Ho Man was the head shot of the mastermind behind the entire mob Wong Chau Sun. It symbolized his behind the scene mastermind identity. * (2016/03/04) Sammo Hung Kam Bo and Andy Lau Tak Wa recently promoted their film THE BODYGUARD (DUT GUNG YEH YEH) in Beijing. Wa Jai thanked this mentor who made him feel like an action actor. He hoped to be able to work with Hung Kam Bo on a kung fu film in the future. Wa Jai said that during the shoot he would study some stunts with Hung Kam Bo and would jokingly ask if the stunts would be viable. Hung Kam Bo would immediately demonstrated them once, much to his joy. The 64 year old Hung Kam Bo directed again after 17 years, for which he felt both excited and pleased because he had a group of friends for guest stars and cheerleaders. He said that although he was up there in age, he was alive again as soon as he was at work. * (2016/03/04) The Hong Kong Film Award Best Actor nominee and Heavenly King Aaron Kwok Fu Sing has been working on his new film. Despite the cold he still braved the rain for his new film! Yesterday Sing Sing posted a photo in which he was completely wrapped in plastic wrap. At the time he already wore under shirt and long john with many layers of plastic wrap outside. He wrote, "When working on a rain scene in the winter, you must prevent chills. With artificial freshness keeping and wetness prevention waterproofing see through plastic under clothes, I can take it!" * (2016/03/04) Famous Hong Kong director and action director Yuen Woo Ping and Japanese national treasure director Kirin Kiki will receive the 10th Asian Film Award's Asian Film Lifetime Achievement Awards for their contribution to the Asian film profession. The organizers praised Yuen Woo Ping for continuously breaking through the existing structure of action film and successfully proving that martial art films belongs to Chinese artistic spirit. * (2016/03/03) Group Twins earlier performed the promotional song DAY AND NIGHT (TIN TIN YEH YEH) for the AngelaBaby and Ethan Juan (Yuen King Tin) starred Emperor film KILL TIME (MAU SAT CHI SHUI NIN WA), the music video of which recently has been released online. Some commented online, "Ah Sa performs the theme song for AngelaBaby's film? Ah Sa is very gracious! She even helps AngelaBaby with the promotion." The film company said that director Fruit Chan Gor brought the collaboration together. Twins decided to participate due to the director's sincere invitation and said that some online were overly sensitive. Chan Gor added many classic hits from late singers Teresa Tang Lai Kwan, Leslie Cheung Kwok Wing, Anita Mui Yim Fong and Beyond. He felt that the film title actually also referred to the passing of these singers before their time. Twins felt that for the theme song the relationship in the film was a bond that time could not described. * (2016/03/03) Film star Donnie Yen Chi Tan, Max Zhang Jin, Mike Tyson, Patrick Tam Yiu Man, Chan Kwok Kwan starred in the film IP MAN 3, which was a commercial and critical hit in Hong Kong, Taiwan and other places. Two days ago it held its Beijing premiere and attracted many Mainland media outlets and guests. Chi Tan and Mike Tyson exchanged gifts. Tyson presented him with boxing gloves and Chi Tan presented Bart Cham Dao to represent the film in exchange. Mike Tyson made faces to cheer up the crowd and kept using Putonghua to say "I love you" to the guests in the audience. Action director Yuen Woo Ping shared the production experience on the stage with Zhang Jin. He praised Chi Tan for being completely in character. Zhang Jin who did not know Wing Chun at all started from zero and gave a full score performance that he was rather pleased with. Meanwhile Chan Kwok Kwan rushed back halfway through the premiere to Hong Kong after learning that his wife Emme Wong Yee Man was about to give birth. He flew back to Hong Kong overnight and rushed to the hospital. "I am very excited. His name is Chan Chun (Chen Zhen)." Raymond Wong Pak Ming led the team to the cinema to show appreciation to the audience. When asked if he would make this genre of films again, Yen Chi Tan suggested IP MAN 4: HAPPY GHOST and cracked up the crowd. * (2016/03/03) Veteran artist Fung Hark On yesterday morning around 6AM passed away form esophageal cancer at age 68. His sister Petrina Fung Bo Bo confirmed the news of his passing. "My 7th brother Fung Hark On has already returned to heaven at 6:01AM this morning. Fortunately last July Heaven arranged for us siblings to have a happy moment together." In recent years Fung Hark On battled cancer, despite surgery he still succumbed to the illness. Fung Hark On once was a martial art director in the Jackie Chan Stuntman Association and worked with Jackie Chan, Sammo Hung Kam Bo and others on numerous occasions. His final film was SAVING GENERAL YANG (YEUNG MOON NUI JEUNG ji GWUN LING YU SHAN). Last year he attended the Hong Kong Stuntman Association event with his son. It was his final public appearance. Fung Hark On's brother in law Yu Chi Ming yesterday morning received the news from the hospital. "To look at it positively it is an early release, negatively he shouldn't have passed away at such a young age. With disease though you don't get a say." As for funeral arrangement, Yu Chi Ming said that the sisters will return from the U.S. to handle it. Friend Ken Low Wai Kwong was in Milan and will return to Hong Kong to assist. "The brothers all knew about his condition, we were all prepared already. Because he had no religious belief, he had some friends who worked at Po Fook Hill and found a good spot for him. The services will begin on March 25 and the funeral will take place on the 26th." [ BLAH OF THE WEEK ] Columns, Reviews, Interviews 1. APPLE DAILY, MARCH 6 2016, GOLDEN PLUM FILM POLL TSZ SHAN VS. SZE BUI: FAVORITES FOR THE MOST ROTTEN ACTRESS A year went by quickly, the time has come for the Apple Daily Entertainment section's Golden Plum Film Poll. This year is already the 11th year. With the principle of tempering the Hong Kong film industry, the year will add many technical award nominations. Through the principle of one vote per person, the audience's choices for Golden Plum representatives will be chosen. Later Apple Daily will announce the voting address. [The Most Rotten Actress] Kate Tsui Tsz Shan (KNOCK KNOCK WHO'S THERE) Gwing Look Returns Golden Plum frequent flyer Tsui Tsz Shan has a new film again. This time she plays a cat demon possessed introverted girl. Her beyond Gwing class 10 naive look and mentally deficient speaking technique were put to great use, making her the obvious Golden Plum Actress favorite. Sisley Choi Sze Bui (KEEPER OF DARKNESS) Just Keep Screaming Choi Sze Bui ultimately cannot escape her small screen frame. Whenever she plays scared she screams, the decibel level of which directly pierced through the audience's ear drums. She lives up to the "sound rape spokesperson" title. Loud does not mean good acting, "Decibel Racer" (Choi Fun Bui). Candy Yuen Ka Man (THE GIGOLO) Topless Helps The film sells a topless Yuen Ka Man, as soon as you go in you know you are in trouble. Making a big deal out of nothing, the short nude scene actually is just the appetizer; force feeding her stiff acting until the end to the audience is the actual main course. Nancy Sit Ka Yin (RETURN OF THE CUCKOO) Crying Becomes Annoying Watching the over a decade series again, Sit Ka Yin was still fine. No one expects that in recent years she has a rapid evolution. When she acts she puts in an effort and the film version ends up in trouble. She does not appear often, but whenever she does she is crying. One word, annoying. Ava Liu (Yu Kiu) (UNDERCOVER DUET) Extra Mentally Deficient To be Fair, UNDERCOVER DUET's script is rotten beyond recognition. Even if Maggie Cheung Man Yuk plays Yu Kiu's character she cannot save it. However, Yu Kiu still knows her role, plays a mentally deficient girl and makes the film more rotten than rotten. [Most Rotten Actor] Dominic Ho (THE GIGOLO) Forced Into Character A gigolo indeed is hard to play. If you use method acting to force yourself into a gigolo's mind, you will only have a hard time leaving the character. Ho Ho Man chooses to perform at a safe distance, he ends up with just a laugh, the end. Mark Wu (UNDERCOVER DUET) Uglier Than Ugly Being ugly is not a crime, but deliberately exaggerating your ugliness just because you are ugly is. Wu Yiu Fai in UNDERCOVER DUET completely displays what is called ugly yet unpleasant, he is so rotten that you feel sorry for him. Jiang Wen (GONE WITH THE BULLETS) Out of Touch Self Confidence Since LET THE BULLETS FLY, Jiang Wen has excessive self confidence that makes him believe he is invincible and immortal. The entire film revolves around him, a film that through the silver screen he pleasures himself to the audience with. Jiang Wen's self confidence has made his character too out of touch. Andrew Tse (LAZY HAZY CRAZY) Numb And Expressionless Originally we should not ask too much of new actors, but throughout the entire film he performs the range of emotions with a poker face. He is the most involved in bed scenes and responses with different actresses. Alex Fong (ANNIVERSARY) Unchanging Acting Sharing the screen with Louis Cheung Kai Chung, Fong Lik Sun's performance becomes a tragedy in comparison. His performance is still stuck in the LOVE IS NOT ALL AROUND (SUP FUN OI) era. When he is upset he screams. When he tries to gain sympathy he plays dumb. When he begs for forgiveness he plays tragic as if not a day has gone by. [Most Rotten Film/Director] Anyone who thinks that when they put their hearts into films they would not turn rotten would be wrong. Even with the plenty of quality people from China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Korea like HELIOS (CHET DOH), the story was mentally deficient and without an ending so it still could not avoid the fate of being nominated. AN INSPECTOR CALLS (FAU WA YIN) as a Lunar New Year film paired dark humor with unrelated costumes, which became its natural flaw. UNDERCOVER DUET still sued rotten comedy crass humor as selling points how could it not be rotten? THE GIGOLO turned the same old trick with a tragic gigolo with a heart. SUPER MODEL (SIK MO) actually asked pseudo model Amy K to be its lead, the director and the film company's courage truly had to be admired! Nominees: UNDERCOVER DEUT (Mark Wu) SUPER MODEL (Wai Man, Yan Kit) THE GIGOLO (Au Cheuk Man) AN INSPECTOR CALLS (Raymond Wong, Herman Yau) HELIOS (Sunny Luk, Longman Leung) [Most Rotten Scene] A film would always has a scene that you will always remember, a rotten film would also have a rotten scene for you to scream refund at! The ghost film KNOCK KNOCK WHO'S THERE tossed out a Tsui Tsz Shan turning into a cat demon scene that truly drove viewers away, in UNDERCOVER DUET Ronald Cheng Chung Kei sucked the poison out of Wu Yiu Fai and mouth feeding scene were extremely hardcore. RETURN OF THE CUCKOO actually was truly only suitable for a television series, because the constant nagging to climax turned into comedy spots. KEEPER OF DARKNESS' human and ghost romance that lacked continuity made people boo the most. In HELIOS when the handheld nuclear bomb was driven to Sai Wan, the film's intention of pretending to be high brow was completely destroyed. Nominees KNOCK KNOCK WHO'S THERE: Cat Transformation UNDERCOVER DUET: Gross Milk Spraying RETURN OF THE CUCKOO: Digging To Save The Beauty HELIOS: Two idiots transporting a nuke KEEPER OF DARKNESS: Sudden Romance [Other Golden Plum Categories] Most Rotten Poster Design: IP MAN 3 Donnie Yen Chi Tan may be invincible in the universe, but he is no match for its strong nation golden investors. On the Mainland IP MAN 3 poster, suddenly the head shot of Mainland film industry financier "Dr. Shi Jianxiang" jumped out and did not fit in at all. Having money is really the strongest in the universe. Most Rotten Costume Design: MONSTER HUNT Wuba This one head four armed monster Wuba reportedly was based on CLASSIC OF MOUNTAINS AND SEAS' "Hundun". Its every move made it seem like it was hyperactive, more terrifying than cute. However, the film in the Strong Nation still made 2.4 billion, what can you do? Most Rotten Ending: HELIOS Forgive us for being ordinary people, conceivably no one would have predicted that after revealing Jacky Cheung Hok Yau to be Helios a sudden sharp cut would take place with the "Now it officially starts" type of garbage caption. Most Rotten Product Placement: RETURN OF THE CUCKOO This actually was not considered a film but an infomercial. RETURN OF THE CUCKOO was about Macau, so all they had were almond biscuits, Ruins of St. Paul's and Macau Tower. Could you not be so predictable? AP Most Popular Director: Patrick Kong "MK Woody Allen" Yip Lim Sum this year became a productive director, directing "big projects" like RETURN OF THE CUCKOO and ANNIVERSARY. On his home turf of the Mongkok district from Argyle Street to Prince Edward Road West he has garnered all the support. He truly deserved the title. 2. TA KUNG PAO, MARCH 4 2016, FILM AND TELEVISION MARKET TREND MERMAID IN A DOG FIGHT WITH DEADPOOL Although the New Spring has already passed for almost a month, the Lunar New Year releases remain strong. The top two spots of last week's box office are still DEADPOOL and MERMAID (MEI YUN YU). The former made HK$ 7.86 million in first place, over three weeks it accumulated HK$ 54.09 million; the latter made HK$ 7.78 million, over four weeks it made HK$ 50.57 million. DEADPOOL led by over 3 million, meanwhile MERMAID is still running television commercials in hopes of a final push over the finish line for the highest grossing Lunar New Year film crown. Among the seven new releases, the disaster at sea film THE FINEST HOURS made HK$ 4.5 million in third place to become the best performing new film; the Oscar Best Supporting Actress winning THE DANISH GIRL made HK$ 3.22 million in fourth place; Michael Bay's war film 13 HOURS: THE SECRET SOLDIERS OF BENGHAZI made HK$ 2.05 million in fifth place, over two weeks it made HK$ 4.87 million. As for other new films, the Hollywood comedy ZOOLANDER 2 made HK$ 1.6 million in sixth place in a rather brutal showing. It is very hard to imagine that three years ago the same Ben Stiller directed and starred THE SECRET LIFE OF WALTER MITTY was able to make a proud box office performance of HK$ 23.35 million; the Barbara Wong Chun Chun directed, Leon Lai Ming and Wang Luodan starred THE SECRET (SIU SUT DIK OI YUN) made HK$ 660,000 in tenth place and could not compare to Wong Chun Chun's previous film GIRLS' HK$ 8.88 million box office; CREED made HK$ 480,000 in thirteenth place, no one would have expected that Sylvester Stallone's return to Rocky would still lack draw; Hong Kong film PG LOVE (PG LUEN OI JI YUN) made HK$ 320,000 in seventeenth place; the Japanese animation HARMONY made HK$ 15,000 in twenty third place. In the Mainland, MERMAID remained strong with 410 million RMB in first place. Over three weeks it made 3,134,860,000 RMB and broke the Mainland film highest box office record; JOURNEY TO THE WEST 2 (SAI YAU GEI ji SUEN NG HUNG SAM DA BAK GWUT JING) made 124 million RMB in second place, over three weeks it made 1,149,950,000 RMB and passed its predecessor's 1,028,680,000 RMB; CROUCHING TIGER HIDDEN DRAGON: SWORD OF DESTINY (NGOR FU CHONG LUNG: CHING MING BO GIM) made 98 million RMB in third place, over two weeks it made 235 million RMB; FROM VEGAS TO MACAU 3 (DOH SING FUNG WON III) made 84 million RMB in fourth place, over three weeks it made 185.29 million RMB and also exceeded its predecessor's 982.04 million RMB; KUNG FU PANDA 3 made 48 million RMB in fifth place, over five weeks it made 977 million RMB. Among the new releases, the Japanese animation SAINT SEIYA made 29.5 million RMB in eighth place; the Nicolas Cage starred science fiction film LEFT BEHIND made 23.9 million RMB in ninth place; this film was not released in Hong Kong. Two years ago it opened in the U.S. in October and made US$ 14 million; the Mainland horror film THE WEIRD DOLL made 2.9 million RMB in eleventh place. This year's Oscars has come to an end. Out of the 14 award winning films, 13 were released in Hong Kong. Two of them ROOM and SON OF SAUL opens this week. The highest grossing of course is the Best Animation INSIDE OUT with HK$ 66 million; the Best Original Film Song winner SPECTRE made HK$ 40.57 million; with six technical awards, MAD MAX: FURY ROAD made HK$ 8.39 million. - LAM KAM BO 3. TA KUNG PAO, MARCH 3 2016, ASIAN FILMS JAPANESE INDENDPENT PUNK ERA UNOCVERS DEEP HISTORY The Hong Kong International Film Festival has begun its advanced ticket sales. Among the over 200 new and old films this year, the most interesting part might be the "Hachimiri Madness -- Japanese Indies from the Punk Years" segment. This program in collaboration with Japan's PIA Film Festival and the Berlin International Film Festival will screen 11 8mm films from the 70s and the 80s. Many of these films' directors Sion Sono, Shinya Tsukamoto, Nobuhiro Suwa and others are heavyweights in today's Japanese film industry. Many of their early work are legendary films that are hard to catch a glimpse of. - HUNG KWONG This "Hachimiri Madness" segment's directors basically are all past PIA Film Festival winners. Interestingly, Japan's PIA Film Festival is the same age as the Hong Kong International Film Festival; but this film festival that directors like Kazuki Omori, Kazuyuki Izutsu, Kazuo Hara and others proposed had drastically different screening direction than the Hong Kong International Film Festival. Its main goal was to discover new filmmakers. Past winners of this film festival aside from Yoshimitsu Morita, Ryosuke Hashiguchi and others who were able to join the film and television industry and become directors, also had film critics who were well versed in Chinese like Yukihiro Udagawa. Basically this film festival could be said as born to combat the Japanese film industry successor shortage at the time. Back then, the studio master and disciple system that traditionally cultivated directors in Japan already collapsed. Due to the poor climate, many people were assistant directors for a long time without any way to be promoted to directors. Many film studios have not hired assistant directors for many years. Thus they approved an independent film competition as a way to discover new talent. Before the video age, 8mm home cameras was the most economic way to make movies. After 40 years of development, this method of discovering newcomers has been proven to be viable. Sion Sono Breaks Through Limits The most famous director of this screening has to be Sion Sono. This filmmaker who has continuously released many talked about films in recent years was the winner of the PIA Film Festival in 1986 and 1987. The screenings of I AM SION SONO!! and A MAN'S FLOWER ROAD were both his award winning films back then and his first film and full length feature respectively. In these earliest films, he turned the camera on himself and his family. The constantly shaky shots and sounds were drastically different from his extremely silence several years later, yet his limit breaking, not playing by the rule style can still be seen in his commercial work today. Screening with I AM SION SONO!!, TOKYO CABBAGEMAN K was the Akira Ogata's Japanese vegetable version of Kafka's THE METAMORPHOSIS. The protagonist K awakes up to discover that he has become a cabbage head. His friend was upset; if he has to change he should have changed to the even cooler zombie. K runs around Tokyo and scares people, cats and dogs like he is one......UNK remade CLOSE ENCOUNTER OF THE THIRD KIND came from manga god Osamu Tezuka's oldest son Makoto Tezuka. At age 18 he already experimented with 8mm's contrast and hue limits, with multiple overexposure and scratches galore his work remained mesmerizing and surprising today. His other film HIGH-SCHOOL-TERROR was the shortest, the funniest and the most horrifying ghost film that fully displayed Makoto Tezuka's "innate talent". Shinya Tsukamoto Also Has Complexity And Variety Before the cult film world classic TETSUO, director Shinya Tsukamoto already has made a homemade film of blood, sex and violence THE ADVENTURE OF DENCHU-KOZO. The "Denchu Man" was sent back in time from the future to save the Earth and battle vampires. The homemade special effects' complexity and variety cooked up a crazy and wild pace. University drop out Sogo Ishii (now named Gakuryu Ishii) at age 20 made ISOLATION OF 1/880000, in which the lonely days and nights, the uneasiness, concerns, and pressure of a guy who goes to Tokyo to prepare for a university entrance examination are displayed in city blues that foretold his future "punk film" explosion. As for Nobuhiro Suwa's HANASARERU GANG, the French New Wave influence aswell as the sprout of his future work H-STORY and UN COUPLE PARFAIT. On camera the actors discussed their characters in advance, then the real story was performed. One tall and one short thug fall for the mischievous Rie as thefts become games. The trio steals a car, a lot of money and kills someone, then goes their separate ways on the lam. The actors suddenly leave characters and ask, how old does this film last? French New Wave style is cited. Katsuyuki Hirano's Fantastic Ideas Katsuyuki Hirano's HAPPINESS AVENUE was "adapted" from Katsuhiro Otomo's GOOD WEATHER but was even more fantastic, in the chaotic story the darkness behind a sacred slogan was shown. Not all directors who started with PIA are active in the film industry. Some work in other genres of visual creation. Described as the "famous Pink Eiga director" in the program, Katsuyuki Hirano actually was an adult video director but he did not make the near vanished at the time sex film. In the "bicycle trilogy" that the program described as "a solo bicycle trek through the ice and snow of Hokkaido", the first two actually were "documentary films" with adult videos actresses like Yumika Hayashi, with adult video versions that were released at the same time...... In comparison to young local filmmakers' work in similar nature Hong Kong film festivals, these 80s work of youth appeared even rougher but still were eclectic and vibrant. Their deeply profound film culture could be seen. Many of the 11 88mm films in the selection has not been seen overseas. For this screening they were transferred from the original film to 2K digital with English subtitles. 4. TA KUNG PAO, MARCH 3 2016, LIGHT SHADOW PATH NOT TOO PRETTY MERMAID STILL STANDS OUT In the 80s and 90s Hong Kong, since Cinema City's ACES GO PLACES (JUI GAI PAK DONG) in 1982 Lunar New Year films have become definite event movies. If you did not see them you had nothing to talk about, and they repeatedly broke box office records. No one expected that decades later China's New Spring slot films also became "event movies" that almost everyone watched. This year's representative is Stephen Chow Sing Chi's MERMAID (MEI YUN YU). The world's first "event movie" was Steven Spielberg's 1975 film JAWS, the global box office of which back then was US$ 470 million and close to MERMAID's 3 billion RMB box office this year. Although film tickets were cheaper 40 years ago, even if JAWS was a bigger hit, MERMAID still was a Chinese hit film that shocked the world market. MERMAID like Chow Sing Chi's previous film JOURNEY TO THE WEST: CONQUERING THE DEMONS (SAI YAU GONG MOR PIN) did not have his on screen performance, inevitably disappointing his audience. The first third of MERMAID was not attractive in terms of the story or acting performance, as it would not be too much to describe it as "dull". The biggest flaw was MERMAID's shoddy special effects, which made the audience misunderstand that computer special effects were not important to Director Chow. According to those in the know, actually a lot of money was spent on special effects, but the Korean special effect company was late and in the end this version had to be released. The film was not cheap but trusted the wrong company instead. Something like this often occurs in the industry, especially with Korean special effect companies. The film story attracted the audience often with the word "love". MERMAID toiled at creating the relationship between nouveau riche and mermaid. The audience forgave all the rough and unreasonable spots in the middle as viewers happily watched the entire film. Thus the word of mouth was still decent. MERMAID's concept actually was the same as MONSTER HUNT, in both humans forced other life forms (one was mermaid, the other monster) to the brink of extinction. Yet MERMAID's story was relatively more logical and complete. Secondly, MERMAID was smarter about what it left out than MONSTER HUNT as it was not entangled in less than innovative narrative plots. The only thing MERMAID came up short in against MONSTER HUNT was its special effects. "Wuba" flexibility and agility was far better than the mermaid clan's stiff swimming. MERMAID was not one of Chow Sing Chi's best work but it still was better than others. For example the leads' singing design in the film was much more natural than THE WHITE STORM (SO DUK) and OVERHEARD 3 (SIT TING FUNG WON 3)'s. Deng Chao's performance of INVINCIBLE in coordination with Jelly Lin Yun's "assassination" had a very strong sense of rhythm. Sometimes in competition between films of every slot, directors might not necessarily have to make their best work. As long as they made movies that had better word of mouth than films of the same period they would win. The reasoning was the same as the World Cup competition, your teams wins when your team is more outstanding than other teams. MERMAID creatively is better than films of the same period in its willingness to innovate and seek breakthrough. Although it was not perfect, this spirit was able to affect the audience. - TIN LIK [ In Production Now/Soon ] Can : Wong Pai Dau Wong Pai Lit : Trump Card Teases the Trump Card d. Opening February 4 2016 [ BROADWAY CIRCUIT ] All's Well, Ends Well is a comic romance of 3 hapless brothers, who eventually learn through their amorous exploits and misadventures that love is only won through gradual nurturing, and quickly lost through the quick, dishonest, selfish ways which they have always taken for granted. Moon is eldest brother and head of the family. The film begins with the celebration of his 7th anniversary wedding with Leng, which celebration he deserts, preferring instead the company of his mistress. He turns up at home with her later, forcing his wife (whom he calls 'hag') to leave the house in dismay. Although she is very devoted to her husband and tolerates him for all his misbehaviors, her tolerance stops short of accepting his mistress openly in the family home. So is an effeminate floral arranger and lecturer at an art school, who is good at cooking and enjoys women's hobbies. His second cousin Mo-seung comes to his house on that same evening, and entirely devours an elaborate gourmet banquet which So had intended as a gift for Leng on her otherwise disastrous wedding anniversary. From that day on, So and Mo-seung are constantly at loggerheads over trivial issues, insulting each other with vulgar metaphors during a mahjong game session, apparently irreconcilable. Foon is a local radio DJ who flirts shamelessly while on air and is well-known among his legion of female fans for his impressive kissing technique. Holli-yuk calls him on air one day and arranges a date with him. She is an avid Hollywood movie lover who enjoys re-enacting particular love-scenes from movies. She is convinced that Foon shares her romantic outlook and they soon become lovers. Foon, however, is a notorious playboy not eager to settle down. Predictably, Holli-yuk catches him in an act of infidelity. After a freak accident leaves Foon suffering from a mildly debilitating mental illness, Holli-yuk offers to become a nurse for him. Taking advantage of her role as his nurturer, she gleefully devises methods to punish him for his callous behaviour. The brothers' dilemmas are later resolved in similarly titled sequel films. Each story concludes on a cheeky and high-spirited note. LET'S EAT Can : Hoi Fan La! d. With the opening of the border to China, new codes and mores make their way into the world of the triads – and those who don’t adjust their business models have already lost. A genre film from Hong Kong that chooses to set its story during those years of turmoil is tantamount to a double swan song. For these political changes also effectively spelled the end of an independent Hong Kong cinema that was admired across Asia. One of the few directors who has continued to defend and develop the genre is Johnnie To. By producing TRIVISA, To is flying the flag for three up-and-coming directors who tell the stories of three legendary gangsters of the period. This is not an anthology film, but rather an overlapping story of men who become victims of their own legends. As chance brings them all together one day in the same restaurant on the Chinese side of the border, rumours swirl that the three are planning a joint coup. In elegant fashion, hype and hubris lead to their downfall. (Christoph Terhechte) MY WIFE IS A SUPERSTAR Can : Ngor Lo Por Hai d.
