Director Stephen Chow Sing Chi yesterday released a video to thank the Hong Kong audience for its support and said that the film preserved the unique Hong Kong film flavor. Would Chow Sing Chi consider making a OCTOPUS spin off movie? He said, "That's great! Good idea!" Deng Chao also posted a photo with Chow Sing Chi. * (2016/03/01) Donnie Yen Chi Tan and Max Zhang Jin two nights ago attended IP MAN 3's Shanghai premiere and displayed the film's weapons Bart Cham Dao and six and a half point pole. Yen Chi Tan joked about the origin of Bart Chao Dao. "Because Zhang Jin kept chasing me with this blade, when he took 8 steps, the blade injured my nose." During their "six and a half point pole" duel, Yen Chi Tan revealed that he almost hit "Little Zhang Jin". Although he did not nail the "sore spot", in the end he still struck Zhang Jin's chin. They met with students at the Fudan University. A female student drew a portrait of Zhang Jin and even daringly asked Zhang Jin for a hug of love on the stage. * (2016/02/29) The Johnnie To Kei Fung and Yau Nai Hoi produced film TRIVISA (SHU DA JIU FUNG) participated in the 66th Berlin Film Festival and will open in Hong Kong in April. Earlier To Sir personally shot the film poster. The film's "most wanted" fugitives Richie Jen (Yam Yin Chai), Jordan Chan Siu Chun and Gordon Lam Ka Tung after the film wrapped up production scattered all over to make a living, but as soon as To Sir gave a command they immediately dropped everything, flew back and got into position. However, the film chose another poster for its release. As for the reason why, To Sir said, "We are not using it so we are not using it, why ask why!" During the poster shoot no one knew it would be an out of print edition. To Sir, Siu Chai, Siu Chun and Ka Tung gave their all. To Sir bent down to capture a beautiful angle and directed them to pose inside the car. He even personally handled the fake dust on Ka Tung and Siu Chai's clothing. The "3 most wanted" were forced to drink beer and smoke inside a narrow and old truck. * (2016/02/29) Aaron Kwork Fu Sing with his film PORT OF CALL (DAP HUET CHUM MUI) won the Berlin Chinese Film Festival Best Actor and its director Philip Yung Chi Kwong received Best Director. The film was also the only Hong Kong film in competition. The Berlin Chinese Film Festival was the first grand scale Chinese film culture event in Germany in history. This time 40 films participated, 16 were in competition with a German and Chinese film and media members formed jury. The award ceremony took place on the 27th at the Babylon Theater in Berlin. When the awards were announced, Sing Sing was working on a film in Shanghai. Thus Yung Chi Kwong immediately asked him to give a speech through video conference. Sing Sing said, "It's very encouraging, proving that the effort and hard work that I invested on the film character has not gone to waste. I am very happy to receive the recognition of the jury. Unfortunately this time I am not able to personally accept the award in Berlin, however, Yung Chi Kwong tonight also won the Best Director award and I am truly happy for him and for his talent to be recognized. We hope to share these honors with the entire team." Yung Chi Kwong said, "When I learned that Sing Sing won, I was 100,000 times happier than when I won. His performance was detailed and precise, he truly deserved the honor. In addition, without Sing Sing's participation and major support this time, PORT OF CALL would not have appeared. He truly loves film and supports new directors and new actors. I sincerely applaud him. The jury praised Sing Sing for using his solemn eyes and body language to interpret a veteran cop with a conscience. His award was beyond any doubt." * (2016/02/29) Leslie Cheung Kwok Wing's fans everywhere would come to Hong Kong every year for his birthday. The first event will be at the Kowloon Bay International Trade and Exhibition Center on April 2nd. Mrs. Chan consulted Japanese "Gor" fans and understood that many Japanese "Gor" fan earlier due to work or lack of immobility were unable to participate in person in Hong Kong. Thus she decided to hold an event in Japan at Tokyo's Ebisu Garden Hall on July 9th. In addition, "LesFANmily" will register in Shanghai thus Mrs. Chan planned to hold an event in Shanghai in September for Gor Gor's 60th birthday in September. Details of application and participation will be announced later online through the LesFANmily facebook, weibo and other channels. * (2016/02/27) Andy Lau Tak Wa is working on his new film WONG PAI DAU WONG PAI (TRUMP CARD TEASES TRUMP CARD) in Milan. Earlier, someone ran into him, Huang Xiaoming, Wong Cho Lam and others on the streets and posted the photo online. "Everyone hurry up and go to Milan, Lau Tak Wa is still very handsome!" Wa Jai started work after arriving in Milan. Yesterday he posted on Instagram, "It's late night here, I just finished work. Before going to bed I want to say to my family...Have a Great Day." Huang Xiaoming worked with Wa Jai for the first and described him as "idol for life". * (2016/02/27) The Stephen Chow Sing Chi directed, Jelly Lin Yun starred MERMAID (MEI YUN YU) broke many Mainland box office records since its release. Aside from opening day and single day box office records, MERMAIDS after 12 days in release made 2.44 billion RMB to become the Mainland box office champion. As of yesterday in 19 days it broke 3 billion RMB and set a new Mainland box office record to become the first film to have 3 billion at the box office. Deng Chao supported Lin Yun that this first film was not easy for her. She had to get into the water in the winter and even "cried many times due to the cold"! * (2016/02/27) The Fiona Sit Hoi Kei, Du Jiang and Wong Cho Nam starred romantic comedy MR. HIGH HEELS opened in the Mainland on Valentine's Day. Despite the competition from Lunar New Year hits, its box office performance was still pleasing. As of two days ago it has already made over 105 million RMB and left the other romance of the same period RUN FOR LOVE in its dust. Fiona visited 5 cities and over 30 cinemas in 6 days to thank viewers and shared her experience like touching herself in front of Du Jiang and posing with him with victory signs like girls. During her Shenzhen stop, a male fan tried to book the entire show himself and moved her idol with money, but he was convinced otherwise as he gave all the tickets to give to Fiona fan couples and enjoy the film with them. Viewers kept praising her performance in the film as "super funny" and "very entertaining". Some fan even screamed, "You are very pretty" and turned the question and answer segment into an "expression of love". When asked about love, Fiona admitted that she would always treat people and events with distrust. For example before she started dating she would already be worried about how to get along after she started dating. Once she was officially dating, she would worry whether he would cheat. Yet after her depression and with the support of her religion her view changed drastically. She said, "Now I have learned to live in the moment, grateful for and enjoying everything that the Lord has given me. I don't think too much, I work hard at making myself better. I believe that naturally I will have good results. Even if I have any problem, I have enjoyed and been happy. I wouldn't be alone in worry." * (2016/02/27) The 36 year old Mainland star Tang Wei wed Korean director Kim Tae-Yong in 2014. Yesterday Tang Wei through her company announced online, "Dear friends and family, Tae-Yong and Tang Tang have good news with the coming of spring, we are waiting for the arrival of a mischievous little monkey." Tang Wei also posted her father's baby monkey ink wash painting. Tang Wei's management company also congratulated her on its official site. Tang Wei's new film FINDING MR. RIGHT 2 will open on April 29th in Hong Kong. The film's first trailer and poster were unveiled. In the trailer the streets and casinos of Macau, the streets of London, the highways and beaches of California could be seen. The production was richer and grander than its predecessor. Wu Xiubo who successfully established his "mature warm man" image in the previous film continued his deeply romantic route. He looked younger and cooler; Tang Wei transformed into a young intellectual with sorrow and sentimentality. * (2016/02/26) The Sammo Hung Kam Bo (Big Brother Big) directed and starred, Andy Lau Tak Wa produced and guest starred film THE BODYGUARD (DUT GUNG YEH YEH) gathered almost half the entertainment circle after answering Big Brother Big's call. Aside from Wa Jai, Hu Jun, Feng Shaofeng, Eddie Peng Yu-Yan, Tsui Hark, Karl Maka, Dean Shek Tin were all "drafted" with Big Brother Big's colleagues Yuen Biao, Yuen Qiu, Yuen Wah, Yuen Ting, Yuen Bo and others. Even Tony Leung Ka Fai flew to Heilongjiang to cheer on Big Brother Big. Aside from performing, this all star line up was the happiest about the photo opportunities. They made the set into a big party for old friends. Guest star Tsui Hark said that Big Brother Big in his 54 years of film career not only contributed to Chinese film but also helped many people. Thus this time for Big Brother Big's comeback, friends rushed over to help. Maka, Shek Tin have not made a movie in 15 and 25 years respectively. The four "old men" with a total age of over 200 participated in the same film. Maka described their team as stronger than diamond. Shek Tin stated, "Only Hung Kam Bo, no one else may be able to make me move." Big Brother Big said that working on a movie with friends was very pleasant and very rare event. He could only repay their "favor" by making this film great. Wa Jai also said, "I will always be by Big Brother Big's side. As long as he needs me, I will be there." Wa Jai and Big Brother Big even edited a highlight video in a silent film format. Wa Jai and his on screen wife Song Jia worked on an argument scene. Big Brother Big and the three great old men Maka, Shek Tin and Tsui Hark talked about shots of old, which was especially attractive. * (2016/02/26) Louis Koo Tin Lok and Rabee'a Yeung Lok Ting yesterday attended a credit card event. When host Yeung Lok Ting asked him who he would plan to take on vacation for the White Valentine's Day, he joked that unfortunately he learned from the newspaper that she was married. Goo Jai denied that the Valentine's Day question made him feel awkward because he often went on vacation with his family. He said that he would not mind going out with his parents on White Valentine's Day, since he would only go out and eat anyway. He spent both Valentine's Day and the Lantern Festival on the plane. He said that he did not avoid the holidays, but he thought they were very interesting since he has never spent both holidays sleeping and watching television on the plane before. He said that this time he flew to Brazil for the film LINE WALKER (SI TOH HUNG JEH), which told over 20 hours. It was very hot there, but when he returned to Hong Kong it was very cold. With the time difference he still has not overcome jet lag. LINE will shoot for two or three more weeks in Hong Kong. * (2016/02/26) The Donnie Yen Chi Tan and Michelle Yeoh (Yeung Chi King) starred new film CROUCHING TIGER HIDDEN DRAGON 2: SWORD OF DESTINY has been released in the Mainland for less than a week and already broken through the 200 million RMB mark. Some compared CROUCHING 2 with the Ang Lee directed predecessor. Director Yuen Woo Ping said, "With the success of the previous film, comparison is inevitable." Many praised Yuen Woo Ping's directing style and felt that the team of Yuen Woo Ping and Yen Chi Tan brought a series of exciting action scenes to the new film. * (2016/02/25) The Chapman To Man Chak, Anthony Wong Chau Sun and Gregory Wong Chung Hiu starred mob film THE MOBFATHERS (SUEN LO JOR)'s Chinese title was accused of using mob language and had to be changed to SUEN LO DANG. Ah Jat yesterday said that although the new title did not have as much presence as the old one, due to the overwhelming odds against them they could only change the title to accommodate. "I read newspapers and know the mob has hall seat election. 'Hall seat' is mob language, but I didn't know 'old seat' is too. The censors asked mob experts and said it was mob language. With censorships I really don't know squat, whatever they say, go." Ah Jat revealed that he came up with the Chinese title with director Herman Yau Lai To. The new title of course was not the best. He felt that when he was young many mob films were around, but for the Mainland market fewer were produced. Thus he wanted to start them again and made THE MOBFATHERS. Actually Hong Kong film censorship seems to be going backward. Past film titles like JUMPING ASH (TIU FUI/selling white powder), THE DISCHARGED (CHOOK CHAK/leaving prison), SPARROW (MAN JEUK/pickpocket) were all mob language but they passed inspection just the same. * (2016/02/25) The film THE MENU (DOH FOR SUN MUN SI) released its first trailer two days ago and mentioned that even the media had to transition to online media to fight for hit rate every second. The film company two days ago posted this trailer on its official facebook account and received 150,000 hits over night, which proved the online attention on THE MENU. Many posted messages and wanted to see what Gwing Pao reporter "Fai Yeh" Gregory Wong Chung Hiu said in the film, "Winning a comeback victory!" Wong Chung Hiu revealed that the film will also mention legal loopholes. They will reveal them and hope to continue to make movies that "hold hands" with Hong Kong people. * (2016/02/25) Michelle Yeoh (Yeung Chi King) and Juju Chan Yuk Wan earlier attended their film CROUCHING TIGER HIDDEN DRAGON: SWORD OF DESTINY premiere in Los Angeles. Yeung Chi King appeared in a white Chinese dress. She thanked her hairstylist who spent 10 minutes to create a hairstyle that looked very time consuming. Chan Yuk Wan posed for photos and signed autographs for fans. She even made a kicking pose for the media. She said that she was very happy to have the chance to be up close with American viewers. A male fan wanted to hug her but security immediately stopped him. * (2016/02/25) The new film PG LOVE (PG LUEN OI JI YUN) two nights ago held its premiere. Stars Anita Chui Bik Ka, Alycia Chan Yuen Hung, Jacquelin Chong Si Man coordinated with the theme "Ultimate Sexiness". Chong Si Man said that each person was responsible for being sexy once. How would she celebrate if the new film performs well? She said that if its box office will go over HK$ 10 million she will wear a bikini on the street and let people use water guns on her. Chui Bik Ka had support from friends. Speaking of her intimate scene with Alan Luk Chun Kwong, she said, "My family and friends asked me if the shoot was real or fake, I or course said it was fake! It's just a movie!" Chan Yuen Hung was asked why she did not show off her abdominal muscles. She said, "It's not time yet, I want to train them more. If I show everything at all what would I show off next time?" Angie Shum Yat Ka only bared her back. She said that if she competed with them she would definitely lose. She promised that with good box office performance sh would appear in a see through dress. Luk Chun Kwong had two passionate bed scenes in the film. Did he prepare his wife for them? He said, "Yet, but she was fine. Instead she would mind a male male scene. However I am afraid that she would ask why all our stuff would appear on film!" * (2016/02/25) Ethan Juan (Yuen King Tin) and Angelababy earlier starred in the Emperor Motion Picture KILL TIME (MAU SAT CHI SHUI NIN WA). They had many intimate scenes. Siu Tin who was a close friend of Baby's husband Huang Xiaoming joked that he pleaded with the director to spare him. He also said that he did not dare to get close to Baby. Siu Tin joked that the feeling was like "cheating with a friend's wife". At the time someone suggested a video conference with Xiaoming to clear their names, but when they heard they were rather nervous and cracked up. In the end they gave up on the idea. * (2016/02/25) Charmaine Sheh Si Man, Elaine Lok Yi Ling, Andy Hui Chi On, Max Zhang Jin. Oceane Zhu Xuan, Raymond Wong Pak Ming, Nina Paw Hee Ching and Chow Chung yesterday attended the Sil-Metropole organization Spring banquet. Before the banquet began, Sil-Metropole organization chief Chen Yiqi spoke of the Mainland box office of 44 billion RMB last year due to the hard work of film workers of the three lands on both sides of the strait. The 13 year of high speed growth was maintained. He believed in two to three years China will replace North America as the largest film market in the world. The Chinese culture's international influence will be further elevated. In 2015, Hong Kong reached 1.9 billion at the box office, the most in history. As the Lunar New Year began, the film market again created a miracle. As of two days ago the Mainland box office broke 1 billion RMB in 54 days and tied the 2010 box office. As the Chinese film market bloomed, Sil-Metropole will as usual continue to strengthen and expand a variety of collaborations with its Hong Kong colleagues. Sil-Metropole will maintain the ten films or above collaboration format. Coming soon will be the Sean Lau Ching Wan and Nicholas Tse Ting Fung starred HEARTFALL ARISES (GAING SUM PO) and SUN HUNG TAI BO 2016. Soon to start production will be NGOR DIK CHUNG MUK SI DAI JEUNG (MY PET IS AN ELEPHANT), YI LONG SUN JIN GEI (ERLANG SHEN BATTL CHORNICLE), DUEN BO JI HUNG (TREASURE HUNT JOURNEY), JUI MUNG SEUNG SING (DREAM CHASING TWIN CITIES), and MONG LO YING HUNG JUEN (INTERNET HEROES). Linda Chung Ka Yun yesterday suddenly announced that she was married and will hold a wedding banquet on the 27th. Lok Yi Ling said that she will not be able to attend but will send a lot of blessing. She would wait until Ka Yun returns to Hong Kong before giving her gift. Reportedly Ka Yun had double good news. Lok Yi Ling paused before saying, "The news is certain good, I will leave the rest for her to share. At the right time she will make announcements." She also revealed that Ka Yun has taken time off until March 31st. Ah Sheh was also happy for Ka Yun. Earlier she and Ka Yun went to promote in Singapore. She knew that Ka Yun was on vacation and even told her to have fun and date. Ka Yun said that she met a nice guy. She never expected her to wed in secret. * (2016/02/25) Carina Lau Ka Ling, Sammi Cheng Sau Man, Kathy Chow Man Kei and Anna Uehara yesterday attended a fashion store opening. Speaking of the government budget, the government will invest HK$ 20 million into the film development fund and suggest for every film's financial assistance amount to increase from 250,000 to 500,000. Sammi admitted that the determination to help Cantonese film is good. Ka Ling also felt that the investment was good. In the past the government has not supported the industry enough. She also praised Hong Kong's rich cultural assets. Its actors and directors had a lot of potential, international renown, so they had to be properly used. She estimated that this year's domestic box office will reach HK$ 5 billion. All three Hong Kong Lunar New Year films performed very well in the Mainland. She hoped that everyone would unite and improve this industry and advised Hong Kong people to do their jobs well and complain less to make Hong Kong a safe and lovable place. Ka Ling said that she has been busy with attending events, reading scripts and her own business. * (2016/02/25) The 40th Hong Kong International Film Festival yesterday held a press conference to announce its over 240 film selections from 66 countries and regions. Two opening films will be CHONGQING HOT POT and TRIVISA (SHU DAI JIU FUNG). TRIVISA producers Johnnie To Kei Fung, Yau Nai Hoi, directors Frank Hui Hok Man, Vicky Wong Wai Kit and Jevon Au Man Kit and actors Gordon Lam Ka Tung and Philip Keung Ho Man attended. CHONG director Yang Qing and actor Chen Kun sent a video to share their experience. The closing film be the Kiyoshi Kurosawa directed CREEPY. Louis Koo Tin Lok said that he spent this Lunar New Year in Hong Kong. "Aside from being with the family, I was also responsible for ceremonies like starting the year, thanking the gods and praying. I thought they were rather pleasant and interesting." Goo Jai revealed that he had to follow the tung sing for a good time for these traditions. This year was rather special as the good time was early morning on the Lunar 29th. He had to go to the temple at 9AM on the Lunar New Year's Day. He did not have to sleep at all and he was asked not to bathe. In the end he ignored everything. Did his relatives ask him about getting married? He said that no one ever has, but someone hinted that he would come for lai see at such his age. Yesterday the government budget announced HK$ 20 million allocation for domestic films' Mainland distribution and promotion uses. Goo Jai felt the amount was not important, but how the fund would be used. He hoped that everyone would properly use financial assistance to make daring and innovative domestic productions. Would he direct? He said, "I am very certain that I won't direct. In the last few years many asked me to, but directing is another area. If I have to do it, I would have to drop all jobs including acting and study anew because the director has to use the camera to tell a story. Now as an actor I am very happy and very pleased. Even if I have a chance to direct in the future it will probably be when will be am already very old and retired, when I won't have anything to do. (Have you thought about any subject?) Yes, but I would talk about it with directors and let them make it." [ BLAH OF THE WEEK ] Columns, Reviews, Interviews 1. MING PAO DAILY, FEBRUARY 28 2016, FILM WORDS [SPOILER] SECRET GHOST FILM THE SECRET: Superficial And Pretentious Hong Kong screen writer and director Barbara Wong Chun Chun's new film THE SECRET (SIU SUT DIK OI YUN) is a supernatural story between human and ghost. Leon Lai Ming plays a modern faithful husband who misses his late wife Wang Luodan. Suddenly his beloved wife is "resurrected" and seems to have no knowledge of the fact that she has turned into a spirit. She continues as a normal wife and mother, but others cannot see her. As the story develops, unexpected and odd changes occur. I do not like this film's production method. The new Chinese middle class packaging is very superficial and pretentious. The mystery of human and ghost has many hole. Fortunately the idea is decent as it plays with its "some ghosts don't know that they are dead" idea uniquely. Lai Ming's performance is mediocre, Wang Luodan is better. (I have seen her in the television series Go LALA GO in which she is very lively, better than the Xu Jinglei directed and starred film). As Lai Ming's father Shek Sau is cool and looks almost like Lai Ming's brother! The problem is several years ago his daughter in law passes away in a climbing accident, the parents have no reason to know nothing about it. The film has many places that lacks explanation like this. If an effort was put into fixing the holes, the film will be more attractive. Speaking of which, many viewers know that the Bruce Willis starred foreign film THE SIXTH SENSE plays with "I don't know I am a ghost". Few knows that in the 70s Hong Kong Alex Cheung Kwok Ming's independent short film YI SAI JI SOR has done so long ago. Chor Yuen adapted it as a part of a Shaw ghost anthology film. The strangest part is, the young lead actress of YI SAI JI SOR (Suen Bo Ling's heiress daughter) passed away in an accident soon after, several years later this short film mysteriously vanished and its whereabouts remains unknown today. Coincidentally, back then the Law Kar directed young girl in a haunted house short film YUM YING also lost its young actress soon after its completion. The film also disappeared without a trace. Both vanished ghost films have become early Hong Kong independent short film's supernatural mystery. (two and a half out of five star) - SHEK KEI 2. TA KUNG PAO, FEBRUARY 26 2016, FILM AND TELEVISION MARKET TREND FINANCE SECRETARY MAKES A MOVE TO HELP IMPORT FILM Before talking about last week's box office, the finance secretary's budget two days ago released a program to provide financial assistance to Hong Kong film imports in the Mainland market. In other words it would provide financial assistance for import film's promotions and marketing in the Mainland. This program is rather similar to the Korean government financially assisted Korean film overseas distribution promotional expenses. Korea films indeed has caught the eyes of many overseas distributors, including Hong Kong, Europe, America and other places, and created the Korean storm phenomenon of recent years. Although the Mainland film market was thriving, few Hong Kong film could be distributed in the Mainland as import films and their box office performance would only be average. For example the Hong Kong hit THE WAY WE DANCE (KONG MO PAI) only made 570,000 RMB over two weeks of its Mainland release. Hopefully after the government financial assistance Hong Kong film would perform better as import films in their Mainland distributions. Lunar New Year Films Remain Popularity Last week six new films were released, both the top three on the box office chart remained New Spring slot films. DEADPOOL made HK$ 17.29 million in first place, over two weeks it accumulated HK$ 46.22 million; MERMAID (MEI YUN YU) made HK$ 14.63 million in second place, over three weeks it made HK$ 42.79 million; THE GOOD DINOSAUR made HK$ 3.42 million in third place, over three weeks it made HK$ 24.67 million. The new release 13 HOURS: THE SECRET SOLDIERS OF BENGHAZI made HK$ 2.82 million in fourth place. This Michael Baby directed war film truly could not compare to TRANSFORMERS. This film only made US$ 51.76 million in the U.S. as well, just slightly better than its production budget of US$ 50 million. Another Lunar New Year film FROM VEGAS TO MACAU 3 (DOH SING FUNG WON III) made HK$ 2.67 million in fifth place, over three weeks it made HK$ 24.55 million. The new release American comedy HOW TO BE SINGLE made HK$ 1.92 million in sixth place, with advanced screenings it made HK$ 2.25 million. This film opened the week before in the U.S. and made US$ 32.31 million, which was less than ideal because the film's production budget was US$ 38 million. The Yuen Woo Ping directed CROUCHING TIGER HIDDEN DRAGON: SWORD OF DESTINY made HK$ 1.4 million in eighth place. 16 years ago the first film was not a hit in Hong Kong either, but in the U.S. it made over US$ 100 million. As for Oscar films, Quentin Tarantino's THE HATEFUL EIGHT made HK$ 780,000 in eleventh place; SPOTLIGHT made HK$ 740,000 in twelfth place, both films were evenly matched. Finally the Japanese animation BORUTO: THE NARUTO MOVIE made HK$ 200,000 in sixteenth place, with advanced screenings it made HK$ 310,000. In the Mainland, MERMAID remain firmly in first place with 920 million RMB. Over two weeks it made 2,718,560,000 RMB, a historical box office mark after the film passed MONSTER HUNT's 2,439,410,000 RMB. THE MONKEY KING 2 (SAI YAU GEI ji SUEN NG HUNG SAM DA BAK GWUT JING) made 264 million RMB in second place, over two weeks it made 1,025,500,000 RMB; FROM VEGAS TO MACAU 3 made 215 million RMB in third place, over two weeks it made 999.69 million RMB; the new release SWORD OF DESTINY made 137 million RMB in fourth place. This time opens in the U.S. this week. KUNG FU PANDA 3 made 91 million RMB in fifth place, over four weeks it made 922.62 million RMB. Last week many new films opened in the Mainland. The Japanese animation BORUTO: THE NARUTO MOVIE made 61.8 million RMB in sixth place in a decent performance; MR. HIGH HEELS made 53 million RMB in seventh place, with advanced screenings it made 82.05 million RMB; the five great directors directed RUN TO LOVE made 10.4 million RMB in eighth place, with advanced screenings it made 46.98 million RMB; the English animation THOMAS AND FRIENDS -- SODOR'S LEGEND OF THE LOST TREASURE made 9 million RMB in ninth place; the Fruit Chan Gor directed KILL TIME (MAU SAT CHI SHUI NIN WA) made 3.72 million RMB in eleventh place, with advanced screenings it made 12.9 million RMB; the Mainland animation THE FROG KINGDOM 2 made 3.01 million RMB in twelfth place; the Lunar New Year film MONEY AND LOVE made 2.15 million RMB in thirteenth place. More about the Hong Kong and Taipei box office comparison next week. - LAM KAM BO 3. TA KUNG PAO, FEBRUARY 25 2016, ASIAN FILMS [SPOILER] DON'T NITPICK WITH THE STORY: THE SECRET Among Hong Kong filmmakers who develop in the North, Barbara Wong Chun Chun is considered the most successful one. Yet a director who mostly starts from a woman's perspective and whose early work's selling point is Hong Kong young people's state of mind, she who returned from America to Hong Kong and headed north has made recent films that connect to the Mainland market surprisingly . Her latest film THE SECRET (SIU SUT DIK OI YUN) is a modern "ghost" story that seems to challenge the Mainland inspection's taboo of ghost, which makes people even more curious. - HUNG KWONG The film THE SECRET is about a love story that crosses life and death. Young couple Kaifeng and Qiujie runs into an avalanche while climbing on vacation. As soon as the film opens we see Kaifeng sitting at home alone, missing the late wife who cannot return and looking for a way to call Qiujie's spirit. Finally, Qiujie's spirit truly returns but only those who truly loves her can see her spirit. Others have no way to see her. The spiritual medium even tells Kaifeng not to inform the spirit that she is already dead, otherwise it will speed up the process of her passing. Thus, Kaifeng tries everything to keep the secret from Qiujie. He only lives with her and their son as a family of three. Yet the cousin who lives near them discovers that his cousin in law has returned and a crack appears. A television new report of the climbing accident even takes an unexpected strike at the happy life of the family. Pulling Back From Social Connections In comparison to the real life experienced or even mockumentary format selling point early in her career, Wong Chun Chun's THE SECRET completely pulled back form social connections. Aside from the peak and China, the film does not provide any real life backgrounds. The leads and the cousin live in an stand alone home in the country that can be anywhere in China or even the world. As for their careers, his is a musician and hers is never mentioned but probably in show business. Ultimately viewers look up to their positions. Later on, we even learn that Kaifeng is a rich kid. The couple's jet set lifestyle then makes more sense. Their fun and games in Tokyo and even Nepal only strengthen this distant feeling. Since it is selling romance, handsome man and pretty woman also make sense. As Qiujie Wang Luodan looks and acts like GO LALA GO, completely different her image in another Hong Kong director Dante Lam Chiu Yin's TO THE FORE (POR FUNG) and completely matches the distant middle class feeling in the film. As for Lai Ming's Kaifeng, I do not know whether his casting is to attract investors or not. Yet putting two actors with 18 years in age difference in so many close up sohts to me is the biggest flaw visually in this film. Completely giving up Hong Kong star, or even the "Hong Kong film" identity, finding a Mainland or Taiwan actor who is closer in age for the movie would probably make this film's "handsome man pretty woman" story even more convincing. Character Point Of View Jumps THE SECRET's biggest twist or surprise is the twist in the second half, which switches the human and the ghost, flesh and spirit positions. This idea very naturally would remind people of the Spaniard director Aljeandro Amenahur's THE OTHERS, the ghost film with an end that surprises many. THE OTHERS takes place in a stand alone mansion, the leads almost have no connection to outsiders. The two leads in THE SECRET are public figures (artists) on a certain level. Throughout the entire film they keep meeting friends and family, as well as outsiders knocking on the door. Such a "I don't know I am already......" story actually does not make much sense, as viewers can only watch with a "don't argue with the story" attitude. Of course, with the restrict area of no ghost in modern society, the director also has to have a way to resolve that. Traditionally, the most convincing way to deny a ghost is a dream. In the end it is still the human's imagination and not truly the dead returning ot life. Yet this type of story that sees ghost in a dream in general has visually limited story telling, the story is told from the dreamer in first person. Yet, THE SECRET's story telling angle keeps jumping back and forth from the two characters' point of view then tells me that it is only the dream of one of them......I can only laugh it off with a "don't argue with the story" attitude. 4. TA KUNG PAO, FEBRUARY 25 2016, LIGHT SHADOW PATH BRIEF ANALYSIS OF THE CHINESE MARKET Earlier a friend introduced a big American film studio overseas development head to the writer to discuss the Chinese market over the phone. The writer suggested for him to observe, study, exchange, and participate. The speed of the Chinese film market development is unprecedented. In addition its uniqueness is not something that a foreigner can grasp in a short term. Last year China's box office rose 49%, 47 films made over 100 million RMB. Almost every week there was a movie that made 100 million RMB at the box office. The reason was not as simple as the size of the country and the population, and the growth of hardware (cinemas). In comparison to other markets, the reasons are both general and unique. First the rise of the internet has taken place for about ten years in China. At the time most were very worried about the cinema development because at the time most young people were enthusiastic about online entertainment. Even with movies they tended to watch online. Pessimism about the future of cinema was common knowledge at the time. No one expected the internet to develop into film's best "partner", from promotion to sales it has positive meaning for the film industry. It even proves that the foreign study conclusion that online entertainment cannot replace going to the movies. The rapid growth of cinema numbers undoubtedly is the greatest asset to the rocket rise of the box office, but the delicate changes within are also worth discussing. In the past big cities led the box office ratio, other country towns due to fewer cinemas cannot assume control. Now cinema distribution is "farm villages surrounding cities", second or third tier country towns have more land and cheaper rents. The so-called "small town youth" becomes the new box office force. More importantly the cinema numbers keeps growing. The old folks without any movie going habits have become supporters, and going to the movies has become a part of life. So last year the admission rate reached 1.2 billion. The large scale Hong Kong style Lunar New Years of several years ago have already run its course because big city viewers were tired of them and no long followed them. Now this type of movies thrives again because "small town youth" likes it. This year three Mainland and Hong Kong co-production films made 5 billion yuan together and overturned two ideas. The first is the idea that intellectual property guarantees victory. THE MONKEY KING 2 (SAI YAU GEI ji SUEN NG HUNG SAM DA BAK GWUT JING) is not the highest grossing; secondly, Hong Kong style movies "does not connect with the local audience" because MERMAID (MEI YUN YU) became the highest grossing Chinese film. Yet the most important phenomenon is event movie has already appeared in the Chinese market. Watching this type of so-called "event movie" has become an important event that everyone gladly participate in. In turn they become big box office hits. MONSTER HUNT and MERMAID both are this type. As the internet becomes more common, word of mouth quickly appears at the box office and makes "event movies" even easier to create. The day that the Chinese film market becoming the first in the world is within reach, so market study absolutely cannot be lax. - TIN LIK [ In Production Now/Soon ] Can : Wong Pai Dau Wong Pai Lit : Trump Card Teases the Trump Card d. Moon is eldest brother and head of the family. The film begins with the celebration of his 7th anniversary wedding with Leng, which celebration he deserts, preferring instead the company of his mistress. He turns up at home with her later, forcing his wife (whom he calls 'hag') to leave the house in dismay. Although she is very devoted to her husband and tolerates him for all his misbehaviors, her tolerance stops short of accepting his mistress openly in the family home. So is an effeminate floral arranger and lecturer at an art school, who is good at cooking and enjoys women's hobbies. His second cousin Mo-seung comes to his house on that same evening, and entirely devours an elaborate gourmet banquet which So had intended as a gift for Leng on her otherwise disastrous wedding anniversary. From that day on, So and Mo-seung are constantly at loggerheads over trivial issues, insulting each other with vulgar metaphors during a mahjong game session, apparently irreconcilable. She is convinced that Foon shares her romantic outlook and they soon become lovers. Foon, however, is a notorious playboy not eager to settle down. With the opening of the border to China, new codes and mores make their way into the world of the triads – and those who don’t adjust their business models have already lost. A genre film from Hong Kong that chooses to set its story during those years of turmoil is tantamount to a double swan song. For these political changes also effectively spelled the end of an independent Hong Kong cinema that was admired across Asia. One of the few directors who has continued to defend and develop the genre is Johnnie To. By producing TRIVISA, To is flying the flag for three up-and-coming directors who tell the stories of three legendary gangsters of the period. This is not an anthology film, but rather an overlapping story of men who become victims of their own legends. As chance brings them all together one day in the same restaurant on the Chinese side of the border, rumours swirl that the three are planning a joint coup. In elegant fashion, hype and hubris lead to their downfall. (Christoph Terhechte) MY WIFE IS A SUPERSTAR Can : Ngor Lo Por Hai d.
