"Fai Yeh" Gregory Wong Chung Hiu, "Fong Yi" Catherine Chau Ka Yi and "Ah Meh" Kate Yeung Kei with new addition Justin Cheung Kin Sing as the Gwing Pao executive will connect a series of stories. The film's media background is very realistic. As the newspaper media is in its winter, Gwing Pao helplessly abandons the medium and begins a hit rate war with rival Flash News. Ng Man Tat in the film plays a lower class worker whose daughter's rape and murder leads him to begin a series of condemnation. Yesterday the film company released THE MENU's first trailer. Fong Yi is promoted to the Gwing Pao chief editor post. Executive Cheung Kin Sing tells her that the newspaper medium will be done soon. Now they are at war with the entire world every second of every minute for hit rate. The dialogue is very fitting. Wong Chung Hiu says that he is watching the fall of the newspaper, in public places like the MTR fewer people are reading newspapers. Most are holding their mobile phones; however, he still supports the newspaper and feels it has a demand. Now the general climate is unclear and gradually is transitioning to new media, which the film will also mention. * (2016/02/24) Josie Ho Chiu Yi won the Hong Kong Film Award for Best Supporting Actress with her portrayal of the sexy "Chiu Long Long" in NAKED AMBITION (HO CHING). Earlier she worked on Singapore director Eric Khoo's category III film IN THE ROOM and played an exotic dance queen. She also taught students about women's secret weapon. IN THE ROOM will not open in Hong Kong until April. The film is a story that takes place in Room 27 of a hotel through different eras, different nationalities, people and events. * (2016/02/24) Nick Cheung Ka Fai and Louis Koo Tin Lok earlier went to Brazil for the film LINE WALKER (SI TOH HUNG JEH)'s location shoot. Although people worried about the spread of disease and crime there, the production so far has been very smooth. During the Lunar New Year Ka Fai and Goo Jai gave the crew lai see to "boast morale". Ka Fai earlier treated the team to Brazilian buffet out of his own pocket and had a pleasant evening. Goo Jai returned to Hong Kong first and today he will attend a film event with director Johnnie To Kei Fung. * (2016/02/23) In the Yuen Woo Ping directed film CROUCHING TIGER HIDDEN DRAGON: SWORD OF DESTINY, Australian Natasha Liu Bordizzo played Snow Vase and was called the "counterfeit Zhang Ziyi". Michelle Yeoh (Yeung Chi King) earlier even made her her disciple. The 21 year old Natasha Liu Bordizzo is an Australian of Chinese and Italian descend. she admitted that she felt like the she won first prize when she got the chance to perform after her audition. She has a Tae Kwon Do black belt and even caught Yeung Chi King's eyes as she made her her disciple. Earlier they had a disciple acceptance ceremony. Yeung Chi King saw how hard she worked and how persistent she was on the set. Yeung Chi King even gave some advice to her disciple. "Whether you make action or dramatic films in the future, kung fu is still very important. You can keep fit and stay in shape when you keep training." * (2016/02/23) The Stephen Chow Sing Chi directed Lunar New Year film MERMAID (MEI YUN YU) made almost HK$ 43 million two days ago in Hong Kong and over 2.7 billion RMB in the Mainland. The performance broke MONSTER HUNT's record of 2.439 billion RMB last year and made the film the highest grossing in Mainland film history. With MERMAID's strong momentum, its total box office will likely pass 3 billion. According to industry insiders, every film would have different bonus structure. In general if the film makes 1 billion RMB, over 600 million go to the cinemas and the remaining 300 million or so return to investors. Production, promotions are other costs are included in the number. MERMAID so far has made 2.7 billion. over 30% or 950 million go to investors. After all expenses and investor dividends, Chow Sing Chi will probably be able to pocket 600 million. Yesterday Chow Sing Chi continued to promote. When asked when he would return to the screen, he said, "Currently I am very focused on the job of directing. As a director I act more than I did as an actor. The director plays every character big and small once for the cast, but my flame for acting has never been extinguished!" Another Lunar New Year film THE MONKEY KING 2 (SAI YAU GEI ji SUEN NG HUNG SAM DA BAK GWUT JING) already broke HK$ 1.2 billion with the Mainland box office. No expense was spared on the costumes of the White Bone Spirit's three followers bat demon, snake demon and porcupine demon. The film company revealed that the special effect make up of the three demons cost more for each character than an ordinary film's budget. * (2016/02/23) The Hong Kong Film Awards reportedly due to this year's Best Film nominee TEN YEARS' politically sensitive content has been banned from Mainland broadcast this year. The Hong Kong Film Awards in the past few years have been broadcast on Mainland internet sites and television stations and received sizable broadcasting fee. Hong Kong Film Award Association chief Derek Yee Tung Sing confirmed the matter. "We learned about the reason from certain means, but we haven't seen any actual documents. However no matter what we will refund the Mainland sites that originally would broadcast the event. The cost will be around several million." Due to the lack of Mainland broadcast, the audience will lose tens of millions of viewers. Siu Bo felt that would be regrettable, but stated that the financial loss would not affect the Hong Kong Film Award production. * (2016/02/22) Director Fruit Chan Gor yesterday attended an event. He said about the film TEN YEARS' critical and commercial success, "I haven't seen it, but I heard that it made HK$ 6 million at the box office. That meant that it certainly had appreciation value." Reportedly Mainland China has refused to broadcast the Hong Kong Film awards over the politically sensitive TEN YEARS' nomination. Chan Gor said, "It's such a big deal? It might not be censorship, only its ideology is inappropriate. Since I haven't seen it yet I won't comment. (Would you make fewer sensitive subject films?) I wouldn't, it's just for fun. Earlier when I made THE MIDNIGHT AFTER (NA YEH LING SUN, NGOR JOR SEUNG LIU WONG GOK HOI WONG DAI PO DIK HUNG VAN) everyone said it was political, but it was just a science fiction dark humor comedy." * (2016/02/21) Juno Mak Chun Lun will release his new record EVIL IS A POINT OF VIEW in the summer. Yesterday a special new song listening event took place and three new songs were shared. Juno said that the new record's 11 new songs will make up a love story between a monk and a priestess. He invited Fiona Sit Hoi Kei to participate. At the end of the year Juno will release another new record. This year he also will have to make a movie. Was he worried that he would not have time to promote? He hoped to be able to make more time for film pre-production because this time the scale will be very large. Will he shoot on location? He said, "The production location still has not been set yet, but the film background will be in Hong Kong. I hope to display Hong Kong in the not too distant future. I still can't reveal the casting yet, but the film will have many characters -- so many that it can be extended to a film series." Juno's previous films REVENGE: A LOVE STORY and RIGOR MORTIS (GEUNG SI) were unable to break into the Mainland market. Yet this time he would try. Was he worried about limitation of his creativity? He said, "To me creativity is always unlimited, I can still create in limited space." He also revealed that the new film will have actors of several nations. * (2016/02/21) Jacquelin Chong Si Man, Angie Shum Yat Ka, Anita Chui Bik Ka, Alycia Chan Yuen Hung and Jumbo Tsang Suk Nga yesterday promoted their new film PG LOVE (PG OI LUEN JI YUN). They made Tang Yuan with fans. Chong Si Man said that she was not afraid that the sexy Chui Bik Ka and Tsang Suk Nga would steal her spotlight. She would wait until the premier to show what she has. For this film, Chong Si Man gained weight to over 140 pounds and 31 inch waist. Although she has already dropped to 120 pounds and 26 inch waist, her TVB program producer still thought she was too fat during the team's Lunar New Year dinner. She admitted that when she did voice work for the film, she was very mad to see what she looked like. Did she lose the chance of renewing her fitness company contract? She said that actually the contract was almost up. The company would decide whether to renew with her or not a few months after. She said that she would do her best to win back her spokesperson identity. Did other weight loss company make her any offer? She said that she was familiar with the old company. Now it still welcomed her to use the machine. Thus she would rather work with the company she knew. Shum Yat Ka yesterday admitted that she was dressed conservatively. She only accepted showing her back and legs and would leave being sexy for others. Speaking of her father, she revealed that her father has already been released from the hospital. Yet due to his irregular heartbeat and his heart stopped for awhile, now he would need someone to take care of him 24 hours a day. Chui Bik Ka said that she only found out about this dress that the designer has prepared for her after she got there. She took precautions against wardrobe malfunction. She also revealed that the film company asked her to be sexy for the premiere to coordinate with the film subject. Chan Yuen Hung said that she just got that news that her former superior suddenly passed away. Thus she put wore black. She explained that the news was too sudden. Earlier they tried to get together but could not. When she learned that he participated in the organ donation program and already helped two other lives, she felt that the whole thing was very beautiful. * (2016/02/20) Wong Jing's new film FROM VEGAS TO MACAU 3 (DOH SING FUNG WON III) was a box office hit. Its total box office exceeded HK$ 1 billion, The team two nights ago held a celebrations. Grace Wong Kwan Hing, Maria Cordera, Jacquelin Chong Si Man and Lo Hoi Pang were among the guests who showed their support. Leads Chow Yun Fat and Carina Lau Ka Ling naturally became targets for photos. They both met everyone's requests. The film company prepared over HK$ 1 million in prizes for the lucky drawing. Chow Yun Fat and Lau Ka Ling were responsible for presenting the grand prize. In addition, the Stephen Chow Sing Chi directed film MERMAID (MEI YUN YU) last night reached 2.458 million yuan RMB at the Mainland box office and successfully broke the film MONSTER HUNT's 2.438 million RMB record to become the highest grossing film in the Mainland. * (2016/02/20) Alycia Chan Yuen Hung, Anita Chui Bik Ka, Angie Shum Yat Ka, Jacquelin Chong Si Man and others two nights ago dressed like beer girls to promote their film PG LOVE (PG LUEN OI JI YUN) in Lan Kwai Fong. Chan Yuen Hung with her 4 inch career line scored a technical knock out on the 3 inch buxom Chui Bik Ka. She said, "No, the clothes are tailored for the promotion. During the fitting I had a lot of fat around the waist. Earlier during the shoot I got some abdominal muscles from the pole dancing training. I hope to able to move everyone's focus a little lower." Would she go commando for the premiere? Chan Yuen Hung said, "I am considering it. (Are the other girls jealous?) No, I am the happiest that the whole group of girls are very friendly." Chui Bik Ka refused to concede. "Really? That's not how you look at it. It's not enough to just look at this costume, in the movie we are even more extreme. (Strike back next time?) I don't like comparison, everyone is pretty in their own way. The costume is already very sexy, if not the next time we will have to appear in swimsuits." Shum Yat Ka's father recently was hospitalized for a heart condition. Two nights ago she revealed that Papa has already been released. At the time Papa had irregular heartbeat and his heart even stopped. Shum Yat Ka said, "Papa has always had heart disease. The doctor told him to put in pace maker, but he didn't get the operation. I was scared when I got to the hospital, Papa was all pale. I thought he was done for. Now he has already been released. He will transfer to a private hospital for examinations." Shum Yat Ka also had a giant tumor. "I will have the surgery in March. The doctor said that the tumor was adverse but not malignant yet. I am worried about any after effect. (Are you worried that it will affect fertility?) The doctor said that I would have to stop taking the current drug for a year before I could have a child, but for now I don't need to." * (2016/02/20) The Leon Lai Ming starred film THE SECRET (SIU SUT DIK OI YUN) two nights ago held its Hong Kong premiere in Mongkok. He and his co-stars Sandrine Pinna (Cheung Yung Yung), Shek Sau, child actor Ho Sing Wai and director Barbara Wong Chun Chun appeared. When Leon picked up his on screen son Ho Sing Wai, the host suggested for him to give "Papa" a kiss. Leon immediately became a "kind father" and lectured his "son" in Putonghua, "Boys shouldn't do anything too dumb." Then they embraced instead of a kiss. Leon also joked that he and his "son" have a generation gap. "I fooled you. Aside from getting girls, we talk about anything and everything." The actors also played games and gave away prizes to the audience. The last challenge asked the viewer to say Leon's character name. Leon suddenly said, "Going to the movies is going to the movies, why does anyone have to say my name?" Then he randomly picked a fan to give the prize to. The director revealed that while shooting in the snowy mountain, Leon, Wang Luodan and the crew all had high altitude reaction. Each person carried three bottles of oxygen. Each time before the cameras rolled they had to take a breath of oxygen. Leon said that because he had no production experience in the mountains and during the shoot he had to climb the mountain and roll around, he only took in diluted oxygen. If he took in too much pure oxygen he would be poisoned. He said that one of the high altitude condition symptom was his lips turning "taro color". Although it was rather tough, he expected it. "At first when I saw all the tourists with oxygen tanks, I thought it was pretty strange. Later I was that way too." Leon who just recently opened a facebook account had over 30,000 people likes in a few short days. When did he suddenly open an account? He said, "People usually choose to be the first, I choose to be the last. The five videos were my ideas and creations. (People online thought you were very humorous?) I have always been like this, weird and odd. People who are OK with that would feel it's humor(ous), those who aren't OK would feel it's weird." Speaking Aarif Rahman (Lee Chi Ting) would leave Leon's company like Janice Man, Janice Vidal (Wai Lan) and JW did, Leon admitted that he has already left for a long time. He said that the company was a transfer station company. After artists grow up they would leave at the appropriate time. Which artist was still under his banner? His eyes widened as he put his hands on his hips and said, "Just me! (Are you fully making yourself the top dog?) No, I want to transition to different jobs. (Will you sign new comers again?) I would if it's destined to be." Leon was unwilling to talk more about Wai Lan's music comeback and said that he rarely read the news unless it was about pandemic or terror attack. Did he have anything ot say to Wai Lan? Leon said, "I wouldn't speak in such a false way. It's not necessary. All singers have to do are their jobs. Should I still talk about someone who has gone to another company? Ask her record company!" Leon on April 28th will perform a concert on the Central District Promenade. He said that this would not be a traditional concert. It will have surround sound effects, fragrances and visual effects. However the audience will not need to wear special glasses. Because the venue can only admit over 4,000 viewers, was he worried that fans would not be able to get a ticket? He said that this time would actually be a carnival, with a lot of fun things around. He has never been on a ferris wheel and he thought of picking a lucky fan to join him on the ride and share the joy. Has he already started training? "You have to exercise the right amount. The doctor would say no exercise would be bad for you. (What about your diet?) You have to pay attention to your health even when you are not performing a concert. Otherwise you would 'go' a little sooner." Chrissie Chau Sau Na showed her support for Wong Chun Chun and admitted that she would like to play a couple with Leon. She even wanted intimate scenes. Was she a Leon fan? Chau Sau Na said, "Fans usually don't have space to collaborate, so I am not saying." Would she choose a boyfriend like Leon? She said that there was only one Leon. Would she pursue him? She joked that you cannot force love. * (2016/02/20) Gigi Leung Wing Kei yesterday appeared on a radio interview. When asked if she would try a Year of the Monkey baby, she hoped to do so when her daughter turns 2 so she would know how to love her sibling. Last year she focused on motherhood. This year she will focus on work. Last week she will go to Macau for a movie and later she will perform a concert. Speaking of her friend Lee Sinjie's pregnancy, Gigi said that she sent her photos. "She is probably around three months pregnant, but her belly is as big as five months." She also said that she will try to fly to Malaysia to visit her. * (2016/02/19) Huang Xiaoming and Jing Girl Michelle Hu Yan, Petrina Fung Bo Bo two days ago worked on Wong Jing's film WONG PAI DAU WONG PAI in Sai Kung. During the shoot Xiaoming and Hu Yan braved a fire to rescue Fung Bo Bo. The film will be a comedy action film. Did Xiaoming have any comedy gene? He said, "I am OK, I want to make more comedies too. (Which Wong Jing comedy is your favorite?) The GOD OF GAMBLERS (DOH SUN) series, it's classic." Wong Cho Nam also took part in the film. Xiaoming also knew that Cho Nam impersonated his wife Angelababy. He said, "Cho Nam is a very serious but funny person, but I can't think of what he looked like. (A lot of differences?) Right, if he does it again I will charge royalty. I will charge each time he does it. (Has he boasted to you about playing Baby?) He doesn't dare!" In the film Ouyang Nana played Xiaoming's sister who hinders than she helps, which made him both love and hate her. Did baby make him love and hate her too? Xiaoming said that he did not see his wife much. "She has one thing that I both love and hate, she needs care from other people. If she needs me I have to appear in front of her right away. Being able to see each other is already the most romantic, after marriage we have been together for less than half a month. We only saw each other for three days during the Spring Festival. We didn't even get Valentine's Day off! (Will you make it up?) I don't know, I haven't thought of anything. Since we have been together for awhile I wouldn't ask for anything!" Hu Yan who worked with Xiaoming for the first time praised how nice he was. They were like siblings. She said that after over a dozen hours at the hair salon and six dye jobs she came away with nothing. "Earlier I dyed my hair red, the more we dyed the pinker it got. I watched my hair went from red to pink, then to fresh pink. Finally I could only wear a wig." * (2016/02/19) FROM VEGAS TO MACAU 3 (DOH SING FUNG WON III) has already made over 900 million RMB at the Mainland box office. With Hong Kong and Macau box office the film has already made over HK$ 1 billion. Actors Chow Yun Fat, Carina Lau Ka Ling and Andy Lau Tak Wa attended the New Spring banquet. Was he pleased with the box office performance? Fat Gor admitted that he never had any box office pressure, as long as it was better than its predecessor the film has answered to its investors. Ka Ling joked that she was "sweating bullets", luckily this year was better than last year. Wa Jai also felt happy because he has never had such a high box office performance. His highest grossing film was FIRESTORM (FUNG BO) with 400 million. Was the imperfection losing to Stephen Chow Sing Chi's MERMAID (MEI YUN YU)? Fat Gor felt that the audience's eyes were crystal clear. Sing Yeh has not released a film in a very long time and had so many fans, he too would watch the film and support him when he would have time. Ka Ling revealed that she has already watched MERMAID. She was happy for Sing Yeh over the film's 2 billion yuan box office. She believed that the three Lunar New Year films together would make 5 billion yuan. Speaking of Wa Jai's LOST AND LOVE (SUT GOO)'s Hong Kong Film Award Best Actor nomination, he said that earlier he had dinner with industry insiders. They presented him with a building block Hong Kong Film Award, he was very touched. This film subject was special, he did not know what his chances were in Hong Kong. If he won he would be very happy, if he lost he would work harder. Although they lost the box office championship, Fat Gor said that it did not matter. In the 80s they made many Lunar New Year films, some won and some lost. It was a process. Ka Ling joked that she was very upset because she was a petty woman. Wa Jai felt that this time they already won because his personal box office was only 400 million. He even admitted that he did not know what to say. * (2016/02/18) The Jacky Cheung Hok Yau and Karena Lam Ka Yun starred new film HEAVEN IN THE DARK (UM SIK TIN TONG) will open on March 24th. They both received Hong Kong Film Award nominations. Ka Yun said that when she watched her director husband Steve Yuen Kim Wai writing this script, she already felt that it would need Hok Yau. Coincidentally a month later he asked her to make a music video and she told the story to Hok Yau. After reading the script, Hok Yau agreed to perform. Ka Yun was so happy that she started screaming! In the film Ka Yun played a faithful Christian whose kiss with Hok Yau in the hills made her feel rather conflicted. They ended up in court. As for being accused of indecent assault, Hok Yau said that he tried to find an interpretation that everyone would recognize because this story had many angles. Ka Yun felt that the court scenes were the hardest to play. "In the film my character deeply believes that she is suing Hok Yau for justice, but once the proceedings begin she begins to waver and feels that she has gone too far. So I have to annoy eye contact and appear to be frightened, but when the lawyer uses extremely polite but extremely insulting ways to treat my character, my rage returns and makes everyone question my character. Thus I cried until I collapsed in this scene." Ka Yun felt that the lawyer character was very suitable for Anthony Wong Chau. Director Yuen Kim Wai then contacted Chau Sun and even said to him, "Ka Yun really wants you to 'rub' her!" Hok Yau had nothing but praised for Ka Yun's crying scene. "Ka Yun was fully prepared, she knew where the cameras were. When the camera to her right, she was able to shed tears from her right eye. I couldn't help but praise, 'Amazing!' because she had to have great muscle control to be able to accomplish that." [ BLAH OF THE WEEK ] Columns, Reviews, Interviews 1. APPLE DAILY, FEBRUARY 2016, FAILED MAN POST WAR DISORDER Both HURT LOCKER and AMERICAN SNIPER depicted some aftereffect after returning from the battlefield, actually you would have them from a film production as well. Many people describe the film set as a battlefield, the reason is fire and smoke appear on the set, the schedule is beyond rushed, there is never enough money and time as everyone is in extremely tense conditions. No matter what they cannot stop. On the set are several hundred to a thousand people, they truly can charge in like an army. They may look very professional but actually they begin and end in chaos just like a battle. Thus after finishing a movie, they like soldiers have one after another post war aftereffect after stopping. This production took place in Beijing. Before hand many have already warned me that making a movie in Beijing in the winter, not to mention over a month of location shoot, was gambling with my life. Yet because of the intense actor and production schedules I had no room to reschedule. Thus I must keep going despite all the dangers. Although I was mentally prepared, when I ran into the coldest winter of Beijing in 53 years, I still had no way to resist. On the coldest day my body temperature dropped to 31 degrees Celsius below zero. In addition the strong winds would rock even the set everyday. The actual temperature was extremely likely to be less than 40 below zero, not to mention the snowstorm that gave no warning and the smog in which he could not even see your own hand in. One day due to excessive smog we stopped production for a day because we could not even shoot close up shots. The script also changed due to a variety of unexpected situations and time constraints. Everyday when I got to the set I not only had to keep an eye on the sky but also think about how to handle the problems from the changes that day. The entire team was exhausted from running around. One after another worker succumbed to illness or injury. The air quality was at its worst, basically as soon as you got sick you would not get better. Each breath was like suicide. The mask I wore had an electronic filter, but after returning to the hotel my face and nose were still black. Pain Is The Only Real Existence Four assistant directors left one after another. The first assistant director broke a leg, the last assistant director was in the military before! The cinematographer and the second photographer had severe eye infections. The stunt coordinators were so sick that they lost their voices and their eyes were swollen. The actors were sick too. The lead actress had to be rushed to the hospital overnight for a fever! Everyone was forced almost to the brink, everyday what I heard the most was "No matter how tough it would be, the movie still would be finished!" Finally, before the Lunar New Year without going a day over, the film truly finished. On the day of the wrap, there was no cheering, no excitement, only the feeling that I just escaped death. Because of the Lunar New Year, we did not even have any wrap banquet after the wrap. The next day without even a goodbye most people left the team and went home on their separate ways. After returning to Hong Kong, I was in a daze everyday. My entire person's response was very slow. I did not want to see any WhatsApp or any message, I did not want to talk with anyone. Every night I would have a nightmare that I was still on the set, still had scenes that I could not handle, scenes that I missed, then I would wake up all covered in sweat. I would happily realize that actually the film has been completed, then I would sit in a daze on the bed. I did not want to get up or go back to sleep. I walked on the street like everything was in slow motion. I actually started to become unable to adjust to Hong Kong sudden temperature shifts. I did not want to play with toys or pick up the ukulele. During the Lunar New Year I did not want to make any visit. I sat at home all day. Even when I went to the movies I had no feeling at all. Almost three weeks after my return, I am still in this condition. Dull and in a daze, I would have to return for post production in a week or so. Yet just like the lead in HURT LOCKER, I escaped death but I actually wanted to return to the battlefield. The feeling of sitting in a daze was a little strange, instead that pain was the only real existence. Making a movie was like being on the battlefield, it is a drug! - Derek Kwok Chi Kin JOURNEY TO THE WEST 1.2 Billion Box Office Director, Figure Collector 2. APPLE DAILY, FEBRUARY 20 2016, I CAME FOR OTHER PEOPLE'S FUN AM I STINGY? OR ARE YOU ASKING FOR TOO MUCH? I never like to give my work to others as a gift. Of course, I know when I mention this topic, everyone would be a little defiant inside and feel that this is much ado about nothing that they can relate to. Perhaps since most people have not published a book they would not understand the trouble from it. So please permit me to explain in a simpler way. Buying Books Myself To Give To Friends When a publisher publishes a book for a writer, it would usually order a certain amount of samples. In general it would be around 20 to 30 copies. Some of the stingier ones would only have 15 copies. In these 15 copies, I would usually keep one all new, unsealed one for myself. Then the company would have a sample. Sometimes I would also have to give a copy to friends who design the cover. The remaining ones are not enough to give to direct relatives. So I still have to buy my own books from the publisher. Most publishers would give the writer a discount price, for example if the price is $100 they may be a 30 to 40%. In other words I would have to pay on average $60 to 70 a book to give to all the friends I have to give the book to. I am not being stingy about those several dozen dollars, but some friends who ask for your book have no reading habit. The publishing that they would normally read are limited to menus and tax bills. Only when they learn that a friend has become a writer would they come to find you. "Hey, I heard that you recently published a book." "That's right." "Give me a copy." "Why?" "You published a book, of course you have to give a copy to your former classmate." "Do you normally read?" "Very rarely. I have to make a living, who has time?" "Then even if I give it to you it's useless. Anyway if you want to read it, you should buy it yourself." "I wouldn't spend needlessly that way. Just give it to me. I have a lot of business friends, I volunteer to recommend it to them for you. I guarantee that your sales will greatly increase, more than my one copy." "My sales is fine." "Don't be so cheap, it's just several dozen to a hundred bucks. You haven't sold too many copies anyway, right?" Giving It To Suitable Readers Once when the publisher sent the sample books, a former classmate happened to come to the company. He pointed at the cardboard boxes and said, "Are you having trouble selling your book? Give them to me to give to my friends." Since I get wholesale prices from the publisher to give books to others, I would not be stingy at all. The problem is I know some friends too well. They get the book only to tell others that he got the book as a gift, they do not really want to read it. Then the book just becomes a piece of decoration at his home, or ends up in a pile of junk until the next time he moves. With friends like these, I really am speechless. Although I do not plan to get rich from the book and I do not mind spending a little money to buy gifts for friends, I just feel that if I cannot find a suitable reader for the book it is crime. It is a crime that destroys the tropical rain forests of Earth. If I want to express some words that people can either read or not and I do not plan to have any financial benefit from it, I would directly make a facebook page and then post the words on it so everyone can read them for free. If I want them to become an actual book, it means that a certain portion of a tree in the tropical rain forest would have to be chopped down. In order for this tree's sacrifice to be more valuable, the book must be read. This is the reason that I refuse to give it to certain former classmate or friends, because they have no desire to read it. If they really like it, I think anyone can afford to spend $100 to buy a book. So I would tell them, "If you want to read it you should buy it yourself at the bookstore. After reading it, I will take you to dinner, which I guarantee will be more than $100 you will spend on the book." I feel that when you spend your own money, you would at least have the desire to read it. Then it is fair to the book (of course, to me as well). Once, a former classmate whose family ran a plastic material factory asked me to give him a book, but I have never asked me for a pile of plastic bags or several barrels of plastic material! Why would you, because you have a former classmate who makes a living from writing, ask him to give you a part of his payment from work for free? If you have a former classmate who is a sex worker, would you ring her doorbell on holidays and then say to her, "No one would come on the holidays, just give me a freebie once since we were in the same class together." Right? Direct Purchase In Support Of course, for elders I would like to get guidance from I as a junior colleague would still very respectfully give my work as a courtesy. As someone in the same generation, why would you make things difficult for others? Thus do unto others as you would have them do unto you, I would directly go to the bookstore to buy my friends' work to show my support. I have wanted to talk about this topic for a very long time, but I know as soon as I talk about it many readers would think: "Oh, you are too petty. Obviously that is stingy." "Do you think I really want to read it? I wouldn't bother even if you give it to me. Do you really think you are such a big deal?" "Hey, I ask you out of respect for you. You really don't know how to appreciate a favor." The old me would be stubborn and directly debate everyone who asks me for a book. Yet as I got older, I became more mature. Now I would tactfully say, "Oh? Did you want to read it, what a shame! I just ran out today, I have to get more from the publisher. Maybe next time, thank you for your support." If the younger me saw that, he definitely would thumb his nose at me and call me fake. Yet when I look at it now, sorry, this is just the way of the world. After turning 40 in life, I do not have to defend myself. With anyone who does not understand, you do not gain anything from talking further about it. - Pang Ho Cheung Ancestors from Panyu, born in Kwun Tong. In recent years many Hong Kong cultural people have been envious of Taipei's cultural and art environment. The film distribution genres there have more variety than Hong Kong. The column discussed Hong Kong film distribution's language breakdown last few weeks. This weeks let's take a look at the Taipei's film language breakdown, from which we shall compare the conditions of the two locations. Last year Taipei had 391 film releases and the box office was NT$ 4,038,550,000 or around HK$ 943.8 million, only half of the Hong Kong box office. This was related Taipei's lower ticket prices. 73 were Chinese films, 18.6% of the market. Their box office take was NT$ 539.69 million, 13.3% of the total box office and lower than 21.9% in Hong Kong; 183 were English films, 46.8% of the market. Their box office was NT$ 3,349,370,000 or 82.9%, higher than Hong Kong's 71%. 41 were in European languages, 10.5% of the market and more than Hong Kong's 12. Their box office was NT$ 30.6 million or 0.74%, higher than Hong Kong's 0.38%; 94 were in Asian languages, 24% of the market and more than Hong Kong's 53 films. Their box office was NT$ 119.41 million, 2.96% and lower than Hong Kong's 6.5%; among them 69 were Japanese, 17.7% of the market and more than Hong Kong's 37 films. Yet their box office was only NT$ 96.6 million or 2.4%, lower than Hong Kong's 13.5%. More next week. - LAM KAM BO 4. TA KUNG PAO, FEBRUARY 18 2016, ASIAN FILMS CROUCHING TIGER HIDDEN DRAGON: SWORD OF DESTINY After over 15 years Ang Lee's wuxia classic that changed the film industry ecology, CROUCHING TIGER HIDDEN DRAGON, finally releases its sequel. Although other than Michelle Yeoh (Yeung Chi King) all of the characters from the previous films are no longer around. The narration in the film said that Li Mubai has already been dead for 18 years. From this perspective, the time difference between the films and the stories were the same. Only, the two films that were based on the a same novel had drastically different world views. - HUNG KWONG Aside from the female protagonist Yu Sulien, the title CROUCHING TIGER HIDDEN DRAGON: SWORD OF DESTINY obviously put the sword in the center of the story. This sword also connected the two films. The sword belonged to the hero of a generation Li Mubai (Chow Yun Fat in the previous film). 20 years ago Li Mubai gave it to Sir Te, which led to Jiao Long's (Zhang Ziyi in the previous film) sword theft and the story of CROUCHING TIGER HIDDEN DRAGON. This sword bore Li Mubai and Sir Te's heroic ways and became the banner that led the kung fu world. 20 years later, Sir Te passed away. The sword that was hidden in the Te home again became the target of the world. Yu Sulien helped Sir Te's son to protect the sword and ran into her long lost love, Meng Sizhao (Donnie Yen Chi Tan) as well as a pair of new generation young swordspeople. The relationships of two generations crossed path in the bloody storm for the sword. American Flavor Seeps Out This late sequel actually is quite a different film from CROUCHING TIGER HIDDEN DRAGON. Back then Ang Lee's casting was basically all Chinese. Even though lead actor Chow Yun Fat was already developing in Hollywood at the time his performance background was undeniably completely in Hong Kong films, not to mention Chang Chen, Zhang Ziyi, Yeung Chi King and others. Yet this CROUCHING TIGER HIDDEN DRAGON: SWORD OF DESTINY's casting was the complete opposite. Aside from Yeung Chi King, all the important characters were Chinese who grew up in Europe and America. Harry Shum Jr. (as Tiefang), Natasha Liu Bordizzo (as Snow Vase) and other young actors with unfamiliar names started in the U.S., artists who mainly developed in the U.S. Lead actor Yen Chi Tan also grew up in the U.S. As from the crew, aside from director Yuen Woo Ping, screen writers, cinematographers, almost all positions were not Chinese. This more or less explained the source of the different flavor of this film. The so-called different flavor referred to that foreigner playing Chinese flavor like in the 70s U.S. television series KUNG FU. Although CROUCHING TIGER HIDDEN DRAGON's young actors all have Chinese faces, their expressions and gestures are still too foreign and are somewhat different when they play Qing Dysnasty wuxia swordspeople. Of course, the bigger reason of this different feeling probably is John Fusco's script. Wang Du Lu's original novel was seen as romantic wuxia, as its spent a lot of pages on romantic relationships. In addition it was also like the traditional serial novel as it was full of intriguing twists. For example that young couple Tiefang and Snow Vase's identity switch -- Tiefang was Jiao Long's stolen son while Snow Vas was the disciple she raised (the film did not use Jiao Long's name and used her nickname instead). Ang Lee's CROUCHING TIGER HIDDEN DRAGON obviously put the focus on this aspect, but for foreign screen writers these details were not what the target audience wanted to see. Thus whether Yu Sulien and Meng Sizhao's breakup and makeup, or Tiefang and Snow Vase's star crossed romance, they were only details that supported the series of fight sequence and made no difference at all. Evenly Matched Thus, the entire CROUCHING TIGER HIDDEN DRAGON: SWORD OF DESTINY seemed like an adventure series in Qing costumes. Some elements of the traditional Chinese wuxia story like schools and honor became some decorative symbols that were simply read from the narration directly (the content also went through double translation). Moving the entire story along was still the format of the leads against the big bad guy. Viewers actually would not understand why the Western Lotus leader Hades Dai would value this sword so much and why he would always send young followers to steal it? If two masters Yu Sulien and Meng Sizhao together could not stop the small time thugs of Western Lotus from stealing the sword, how could they defeat their big bad leader on their turf? Of course, all wuxia film would run into such problems of martial art ability levels, but in general the screen writer and the director would arrange for something to distract the audience's attention. Only this foreign screen writer seemed to not have noticed this point. The continuous chase and fight format made the difficulty of deciphering the martial art levels even more obvious. Perhaps, this film's commercial format was even more interesting than its content. Aside from cinemas it also was simultaneously released on the internet. It was a new ear trail blazing pioneer. The Hollywood filmmaker driven production released in the appearance of a Chinese film not only represented the draught of European and American film subjects but also their ambition of swallowing and digesting all film genres of the world. 5. TA KUNG PAO, FEBRUARY 18 2016, LIGHT SHADOW PATH THE SPRING FESTIVAL SLOT FILMS At this writing MERMAID has already exceeded 1.8 billion RMB at the box office. Seemingly this film will undoubtedly surpass MONSTER HUNT to become the highest grossing Chinese film in history. This year's New Spring box office take could be considered a great harvest. It also broke all of last year's records. According to reports from the Lunar New Year's to the Lunar 6th, the total national box office reached 3 billion -- 67% increase from last year. The Lunar New Year's Day take alone was already 660 million yuan as the Chinese film market single day box office broke the US$ 100 million mark. the Lunar New Year's Day box office mainly came from MERMAID, THE MAN FROM MACAU 3 (FROM VEGAS TO MACAU 3 in Hong Kong) and THE MONKEY KING 2. The previous single day box office record July 18th in the summer last year, as MONSTER HUNT, JIAN BING MAN and MONKEY KING: HERO IS BACK made 425 million. MERMAID even broke LOST IN HONG KONG's national film single day box office record with 274 million. As Qinghua University film and television broadcast research center chief Yin Hong said, "The global film market has not exceeded the average growth speed of 5%. China maintained the annual increase of over 35%. Last year it even reached 49%. It is th strongest growth engine globally and created the large increase space." The New Spring slot performance indeed has been encouraging and also proved that the Chinese film market still remained in a high growth period. The ticket price reduction and cinema admission rate slowdown for now have not hindered the growth. The Chinese film market remained a stable high speed market. The New Spring's three co-production films are the best example. The most eye catching for commercial films are stars. FROM VEGAS TO MACAU 3 has several Hong Kong Best Actors, THE MONKEY KING 2 is also star studded; in comparison seemingly MERMAID's cast seems to lack luster. Actually director Chow Sing Chi is the biggest "star". All three films are very eye catching, but from the box office the northern and southern audience have different preferences. Some said that "The south watched MACAU the north MONKEY, as MERMAID ate all over". Yet, film quality and word of mouth are the real trump cards. MERMAID's box office has been steady since its opening because of its decent word of mouth. The problem with MONKEY was its predecessor left an impression that was too poor. This time the special effects and promotion have been better than its predecessor, but it still did not get a following. FROM 3 although had the strongest cast had mediocre word of mouth. Its box office decline was the biggest, as some in the media called it the worst among rotten films and dead on arrival. Two years ago due to THE MONKEY KING's weak word of mouth FROM 1 became a hit. This year FROM 3's negative reviews and MONKEY 2's predecessor impression enabled MERMAID to break records. Who still dares to deny the idea that "word of mouth is invincible"? - TIN LIK [ In Production Now/Soon ] Can : Wong Pai Dau Wong Pai Lit : Trump Card Teases the Trump Card d. Opening February 4 2016 [ BROADWAY CIRCUIT ] All's Well, Ends Well is a comic romance of 3 hapless brothers, who eventually learn through their amorous exploits and misadventures that love is only won through gradual nurturing, and quickly lost through the quick, dishonest, selfish ways which they have always taken for granted. Moon is eldest brother and head of the family. The film begins with the celebration of his 7th anniversary wedding with Leng, which celebration he deserts, preferring instead the company of his mistress. He turns up at home with her later, forcing his wife (whom he calls 'hag') to leave the house in dismay. Although she is very devoted to her husband and tolerates him for all his misbehaviors, her tolerance stops short of accepting his mistress openly in the family home. So is an effeminate floral arranger and lecturer at an art school, who is good at cooking and enjoys women's hobbies. His second cousin Mo-seung comes to his house on that same evening, and entirely devours an elaborate gourmet banquet which So had intended as a gift for Leng on her otherwise disastrous wedding anniversary. From that day on, So and Mo-seung are constantly at loggerheads over trivial issues, insulting each other with vulgar metaphors during a mahjong game session, apparently irreconcilable. Foon is a local radio DJ who flirts shamelessly while on air and is well-known among his legion of female fans for his impressive kissing technique. Holli-yuk calls him on air one day and arranges a date with him. She is an avid Hollywood movie lover who enjoys re-enacting particular love-scenes from movies. She is convinced that Foon shares her romantic outlook and they soon become lovers. Foon, however, is a notorious playboy not eager to settle down. Predictably, Holli-yuk catches him in an act of infidelity. After a freak accident leaves Foon suffering from a mildly debilitating mental illness, Holli-yuk offers to become a nurse for him. Taking advantage of her role as his nurturer, she gleefully devises methods to punish him for his callous behaviour. The brothers' dilemmas are later resolved in similarly titled sequel films. With the opening of the border to China, new codes and mores make their way into the world of the triads – and those who don’t adjust their business models have already lost. A genre film from Hong Kong that chooses to set its story during those years of turmoil is tantamount to a double swan song. For these political changes also effectively spelled the end of an independent Hong Kong cinema that was admired across Asia. One of the few directors who has continued to defend and develop the genre is Johnnie To. By producing TRIVISA, To is flying the flag for three up-and-coming directors who tell the stories of three legendary gangsters of the period. This is not an anthology film, but rather an overlapping story of men who become victims of their own legends. As chance brings them all together one day in the same restaurant on the Chinese side of the border, rumours swirl that the three are planning a joint coup.
