MISCELLANEOUS * (2016/02/17) The Stephen Chow Sing Chi directed MERMAID (MEI YUN YU) kept reporting good news in the Mainland. 9 days after its Lunar New Year's Day release (as of yesterday, February 16 at 7PM) its cumulative box office has already passed 2.1 billion yuan RMB to become the Mainland Lunar New Year film champion. It broke MONSTER HUNT's 2 billion yuan RMB over 24 days record last year and headed for 3 billion and the highest grossing Chinese film record. As for February 15 in Hong Kong it has already made over HK$ 30 million over 8 days to become the Hong Kong Lunar New Year film champion and even broke his JOURNEY TO THE WEST: CONQUERING THE DEMONS (SAI YAU GONG MOR PIN) total box office; FROM VEGAS TO MACAU 3 (DOH SING FUNG WON III) made HK$ 22.5 million while THE MONKEY KING 2 (SAI YAU GEI ji SUEN NG HUNG SAM DA BAK GWUT JING) made HK$ 14 million. Although Chow Sing Chi did not act in MERMAID, it was still attractive in the Mainland. Currently MERMAID is already in third place in the Chinese film box office history. First place was 2.438 billion RMB of MONSTER HUNT last year; in second place was the 2.426 billion yuan RMB of FAST AND FURIOUS 7 last year. Conceivably MERMAID would not have any difficult with breaking MONSTER HUNT's record to become the Chinese film box office champion. FROM VEGAS TO MACAU 3 and THE MONKEY KING 2 made over 800 million yuan RMB in the Mainland. MERMAID's Kitty Zhang Yuqi was happy about the film's success. As for how she would celebrate, she said, "The best reward would be able to make MERMAID 2 and 3, or even more. Now everyone likes MERMAID so much, they seem to want more, at least for 1 or 2 more movies." Wong Jing who has worked with Sing Yeh on many classic films and made this year's Lunar New Year film FROM VEGAS TO MACAU 3 was rumored to be at odds with Sing Yeh but still congratulated him. Wong Jing said, "Congratulations to Director Chow Sing Chi's MERMAID for breaking 2 billion RMB and heading for the highest record. I also want to celebrate in advance our FROM VEGAS TO MACAU 3 and THE MONKEY KING 2 will break 1 billion RMB this weekend together. This is happiness for all, a wonderful Lunar New Year. In the 90s, I understood that as long as the film industry was doing well together it was truly well. The real red hot fire enables us to add fuel the fire and work hard during the golden age of Chinese film, to surpass the U.S. and become the world's largest film market." Chow Sing Chi has gone all in to promote MERMAID. After singing harmony for Karen Mok Man Wai and Adam Cheng Siu Chau's promotional song YOU ARE STILL THE BEST IN THE WORLD, Sing Yeh even wrote the theme song INVINCIBLE. Yesterday the INVINCIBLE recording session video was released. The performer was Deng Chao, but Sing Yeh, Show Lo (Law Chi Cheung), Jelly Lin Yun and Kris Wu Yifan also appeared. Piggy grabbed a shower head for a microphone and pretended to sing; Sing Yeh's harmony for Deng Chao was even more intense, with all the emotions and action. The funniest was when Deng Chao finished recording, he was very pleased with his performance and said, "Perfect!" Sing Yeh smiled and said, "Again! Again!" He was seriously demanding. * (2016/02/17) Kelly Chen Wai Lam yesterday attended a Lunar New Year lion dance event in Causeway Bay. She revealed that in March or April she will begin work on her new film. She could not reveal too many details yet, but she will leave Hong Kong for the shoot. The shoot will take one to two months. Her husband will take care of their sons while she will be away. She said, "After the concerts earlier, my husband has become great with the kids. It's not hard for him at all." * (2016/02/17) The Fiona Sit Hoi Kei, Du Jiang, Wong Cho Nam starred romantic comedy MR. HIGH HEELS opened on February 14th in the Mainland. In the film Fiona lost confidence in men and had an ambiguous relationship with the cross dresser Li Yuan. Du Jiang due to her crush on Fiona dressed up like a woman to get close to her. Fiona said, "Du Jiang with his big eyes and pointy face looked prettier than many real women as a woman. Yet at every night shoot, I can see his facial hair growing slowly. No matter how romantic the scene originally was, I had a very hard time with holding back my laughter." Du Jiang instead praised Fiona for working hard to hold back her laughter and concentrate on her character, her performance was professional. His female disguise received uniformly good reviews. Fiona gave him some lady secrets to make Du Jiang more woman than any woman. Speaking of the most memorable scene, Fiona admitted that absolutely when she could not help herself but kissed Du Jiang in a woman disguise. She said, "At the time I didn't know Du Jiang was a woman, one day I share my heartache with him. When he encouraged me I couldn't help but kiss him, and I realized that I have already fallen for this person." Earlier MR. HIGH HEELS held its Mainland premiere and had decent word of mouth. The official release in a few short days already accumulated 50 million RMB at the box office. The performance absolutely answered for the onslaught from many Lunar New Year hit films. * (2016/02/16) The Lunar 9th is the time to wrap up the Lunar New Year box office numbers. Although DEADPOOL was released later than other Lunar New Year films, it caught up in the end. As of two days ago its Hong Kong box office was HK$ 28.93 million, which made it the Lunar New Year champion. MERMAID with HK$ 28.61 million came in second. THE GOOD DINOSAUR with HK$ 21.25 million came in fourth. The Aaron Kwok Fu Sing starred THE MONKEY KING 2 (SAI YAU GEI ji SUEN NG HUNG SAM DA BAK GWUT JING) came in fifth with HK$ 13.51 million. Without DEADPOOL as its competition, MERMAID was the sole success in the Mainland. As for yesterday at 7PM, it has already accumulated 1.95 billion yuan RMB and left FROM VEGAS TO MACAU 3's 820 million RMB and THE MONKEY KING 2's 810 million RMB in the dust. * (2016/02/16) The Year of the Monkey Lunar New Year films opened high. Several big films including THE MONKEY KING 2 (SAI YAU GEI ji SUEN NG HUNG SAM DA BAK GWUT JING), FROM VEGAS TO MACAU 3 (DOH SING FUNG WON III) and MERMAID (MEI YUN YU) in the past seven days made over US$ 548 million to surpass US$ 529 million single week box office in North American during Christmas and created the new global single week box office record. Chow Sing Chi on Valentine's Day accumulated 1.8 billion RMB. The film company took the chance to release out takes to thank the audience for their support. * (2016/02/16) Carina Lau Ka Ling yesterday attended a Lunar New Year event as a special guest. Ka Ling hosted the banging of the gong and dotted the eyes of lion dance lion. She even received three good luck gifts from the Fortune God, a giant longevity peach, a complete box and a bucket of gold. After the Lunar New Year she will first visit Taiwan then continued to fly, half for work and half for entertainment. As for movies, she admitted that she would only make one because at her age she could not make too many. As for the new film details, Ka Ling said that she would wait for the production to start before saying more. Ka Ling heard that Tony Leung Chiu Wai's new film FERRYMAN (BAI DOH YUN) will have to be re-shot. Did her heart ache for her husband? She said, "That's not for my heart to ache for. You have to keep looking to improve as slow work yields detailed product. In addition, the film is a Jet Tone production, Wong Kar Wai is the producer. It is worth the time waiting for it." * (2016/02/15) The Donnie Yen Chi Tan and Michelle Yeoh (Yeung Chi King) starred film CROUCHING TIGER HIDDEN DRAGON: SWORD OF DESTINY held its Beijing premiere. 20 years ago they already played a couple, which made them century crossing "old flames". Yen Chi Tan said about his read through with Yeung Chi King, "As soon as I saw her I fell for her, basically we didn't need dialogue. We could act with just our eyes." Yeung Chi King and her fiancee Jean Todt sweetly held hands in the audience. When asked about their wedding date, she only smiled and said, "I have been so lucky because I saved the galaxy in a previous life." Coco Lee Man performed MOONLIGHT LOVERS and IF ONLY ONE SECOND IS LEFT with Jam Hsiao. Finally Yuen Woo Ping presented gold roses to the two actresses to express "true love of dragon never wilts". * (2016/02/15) The Lunar New Year's main box office battlefield is the Mainland. According to Mainland media reports this year from Lunar New Year's Day to the Lunar 7th. The Mainland box office was around 3.4 billion RMB. Stephen Chow Sing Chi's MERMAID (MEI YUN YU) announced good news daily. Yesterday after 3PM it reached 1.7 billion RMB and has already pulled away from Chinese Lunar New Year films FROM VEGAS TO MACAU 3 (DOH SING FUNG WON III) and THE MONKEY KING 2 (SAI YAU GEI ji SUEN NG HUNG SAM DA BAK GWUT JING). One of FROM 3's investors Mrs. Heung Tiffany Chan Lan yesterday "opened fire" over the Mainland box office online and said that she would not make comparisons with untrue box office. She turned around and "congratulated" MERMAID box office for "making" it to 5 billion. Mrs. Heung was on full rage. Mrs. Heung suddenly said that she wanted to have an "uniform reply" online. "First, I don't want to compare with other people's untrue box office. Secondly, this film has a dozen bosses, I never pay any attention to them. Thirdly, THE MONKEY KING 2 has already been proven to 'hack' MERMAID (MERMAID's promotional company told me)...... since it has nothing to do with me why do Sing Fans or the water army always go online to yell at me? Are they bullying me for not speaking up? Finally congratulations to MERMAID box office for making it to 5 billion, the next 5 years no one would be able to break the record! I also wish for 3 billion for THE MONKEY KING 2's box office. How's that?" Mr.s Heung seemed to hint that someone was "hacking" THE MONKEY KING 2's box office. "Gold cup and silver cup are no match for the people's word of mouth, someone is always trying to knock you off when you are on top......" She felt strange that any criticism against MERMAID would draw thousands of water army. She reiterated that she has never criticized MERMAID, because she has not seen it she was not qualified to comment. Reportedly FROM 3 and MONKEY 2 made 680 and 660 million RMB over six days respectively. MONKEY 2 has momentum, in Hong Kong it made HK$ 12 million over 8 days, the Mainland box office is almost HK$ 800 million and has the best Spring Festival word of mouth. Director Pang Ho Cheung said that he thought he was watching a Hollywood super blockbuster during the final battle against the White Bone Spirit. MERMAID already broken 1.7 billion as of yesterday 3PM at the Mainland box office. * (2016/02/15) Artists Angie Shum Yat Ka, Anita Chui Bik Ka and Jacquelin Chong Si Man yesterday promoted their film PG LOVE (PG LUEN OI JI YUN) and gave away condoms on the busy streets of Mongkok. Shum Yat Ka said that she rarely came in contact with "this stuff" and awkwardly admitted that she has not come in contact in a very long time. Since she has not dated for over two years, she hoped to find a boyfriend soon. Shum Yat Ka who received 99 roses from an anonymous suitor would have a date at night. Would the condoms come in handy? She said that her parents taught her not to be so casual and she should get to know him first. "I would keep them, since they don't go bad anyway. I can keep them for several years. For now I don't need to use them." Chui Bik Ka claimed to be single and even said that she had no suitor, no date and no flower. "I rarely go out so I don't meet guys, but I am not in a hurry. When I see other people I wouldn't feel sour because I want to focus on work." She also said that she would look for guys at her sister's wedding. * (2016/02/14) The Stephen Chow Sing Chi directed Lunar New Year film MERMAID (MEI YUN YU) already made more than HK$ 20 million in Hong Kong and 1.2 billion RMB in the Mainland. Although Sing Yeh did not appear in the film, he actually provided his voice to the snoring of the old mermaid. Sing Yeh mischievously said, "I really took part in the performance!" Two videos from the sound recording sessions appeared for the first time. Although it was only a dozen or so seconds of snoring, Sing Yeh did not slack off. He gave a full range of emotions during his snoring, on and off screen he was just as attractive. The film company also dissected the story. The first time when YOU ARE THE BEST IN THE WORLD appeared, Kitty Zhang Yuqi and Tsui Hark appeared in a luxury car. It was not the Karen Mok Man Wai and Adam Cheng Siu Chau's new version but the Roman Tam (Law Man) and Jenny Tseng's original version. It was Sing Yeh's salute to two music industry elders. When the old mermaid told a story for the first time in the film, a pile of old records was next to her. They included LEGEND OF CONDOR HEROES and LUK SIU FUNG, which were Sing Yeh's favorites. He said, "MERMAID had no Buddha's Palm, but it still has my favorite wuxia nostalgia." Those two records perfectly reflected that. The second time the old mermaid told the story she said, "if not for Mr. Cheng's helping hand 600 years old". The shot swept across an old record with Cheng Siu Chau's classic FIVE EASY PIECES look, but actually the Mr. Cheng the old mermaid referred to was someone else -- the legend of "Zheng He's treasure voyages". Although Zheng He was an eunuch, the old mermaid said, "Love surpasses all races and rules!" This was the mermaid fairy tale that Sing Yeh wanted to tell everyone. In the film Deng Chao opened his heart to Jelly Lin Yun and told his own tear inducing chicken leg story, which inevitably reminded people of the father and son relationship in the film KING OF BEGGARS (MO JONG YUEN SO HAK YI) and portrait of Sing Yeh's childhood. Sing Yeh was from a poor family. In order for his mother to eat more, he constantly would drop the chicken leg to the floor. Even if he had to take a beating, Mama would still wash off the chicken leg and eat it. Sing Yeh did not mind for this scene to appear in the film, because he wanted to express, "tomorrow will be even better"! * (2016/02/13) After the Lunar New Year, Leon Lai Ming, Donnie Yen Chi Tan and Michelle Yeoh (Yeung Chi King)'s new film will open next week. However the film companies plan to go against tradition and have zero promotion. The Lai Ming, Wang Luodan and Sandrine Pinna (Cheung Yung Yung) starred THE SECRET (SIU SUT DIK OI YUN) has already held its Mainland press conference and promotions in October. At the time it was planned for a year end release, but due to scheduling it was postponed until after Valentine's Day with advanced screenings the day of. Lai Ming earlier frequently attended promotions and interacted on social media. However he said that he would be so busy with work that he was unable to promote in Hong Kong again. For now he will only attend the film's February 18th premiere. CROUCHING TIGER HIDDEN DRAGON: SWORD OF DESTINY will also open next week, but both leads will be busy. Yeung Chi King said that she would only attend the Beijing promotions, while Yen Chi Tan will be busy with STAR WARS in England. * (2016/02/13) International Best Actress Gong Li earlier appeared on Cable's Film Montage to talk about her character the White Bone Spirit in this year's Lunar New Year film THE MONKEY KING 2 (SAI YAU GEI ji SUEN NG HUNG SAM DA BAK GWUT JING). She not only had many fight scenes with Aaron Kwok Fu Sing but also tried wire work. Gong Li admitted, "Flying back and forth really is a lot of fun, when I have time I want to try it again." Gong Li said that after making COMING HOME she has been waiting for a character that was completely different. Finally the "White Bone Spirit" arrived. Even when she had to spend 5 to 6 hours to have her face spray painted, she thought it was well worth the effort. "Just director (Soi) Cheang Po Shui and action director (Sammo) Hung Kam Bo were already very attractive. Kwok Fu Sing grew up very quickly in the past ten years and won many awards. I was very happy to work with him, I really was reluctant to part!" Gong Li even revealed that when she heard Sing Sing was interested in directing, she immediately offered to perform. * (2016/02/13) This year over 20 international films were selected for the Berlin International Film Festival competition. Only CROSS CURRENT represented Chinese film in competition. Hong Kong film TRIVISA (SHU DA JIU FUNG) was also invited to participate in the forum. Johnnie To Kei Fung and Yau Nai Hoi produced the film with new directors Frank Hui Hok Man, Jevons Au Man Kit and Vicky Wong Wai Kit. The film is based on real people and events. Jordan Chan Siu Chun, Richie Jen (Yam Yin Chai) and Gordon Lam Ka Tung play three of Hong Kong's most wanted. * (2016/02/13) The Stephen Chow Sing Chi directed and produced Lunar New Year film MERMAID (MEI YUN YU) since its Lunar New Year's Day release has been on top of the Mainland and Hong Kong Lunar New Year Chinese film charts. At the same time it also broke the Chinese film opening day box office record. As of two days ago (on the 11th) its Hong Kong cumulative box office was HK$ 16,639,720. In the Mainland it even broke 1 billion RMB in 92 hours. Sing Yeh not only thanked the audience but he was also the most touched that he was able to through this love story make everyone understand the importance of environmental protection. Sing Yeh admitted that a comedy that truly makes the audience laugh was not easy to make. When he made each film he cared the most about whether the audience would like it or not. The audience had to like it for it to perform well at the box office. He said, "You don't have to think about the box office. As long as the audience likes it it is good. The audience is the most important. (Which is the most beautiful love story and your favorite fairy tale?) Hahaha, didn't I just make it? For now MERMAID's love and fairy tale performance are already very appropriate." MERMAID's final trailer stressed environmental protection, which surprised many people online as the love story brought out a touching message. Sing Yeh proudly said, "Environmental protection is a very basic condition of human existence. As the film says, 'When the world runs out its last drop of clean water and last breath of clean air, how much is money worth then?' Environmental protection is so important to every one of us. I really like to put this theme into this film." Sing Yeh also praised Sing girl Jelly Lin Yun by name. "Lin Yun as a new comer plays a mermaid, during which she has many complicated changes. I feel that it really isn't easy for her......it isn't easy for me either. For her to be able to give such a performance, I really feel very proud. Actually it isn't easy for Deng Chao either. Law Chi Cheung (Show Lo) and Zhang Yuqi (Kitty) were also great. They have achieved the required effect. I truly have no regret about this film." http://news.takungpao.com.hk/paper/q/2016/0213/3279174.html * (2016/02/12) The Motion Picture Industry Association yesterday announced the film box office between the Lunar New Year's Eve and the Lunar 3rd. The total box office was around HK$ 61,526,852, a slight drop of 0.87% form last year. MERMAID (MEI YUN YU) over 4 days topped the list with HK$ 13 million, its opening day was almost HK$ 5 million and broke KUNG FU HUSTLE's 2004 HK$ 4.4 million record to become the Hong Kong film opening day champion. According to Mainland box office sources, the national total box office was almost 1.7 billion RMB between the Lunar New Year's Day and the Lunar 3rd, which was the total box office of last year's 7 day Spring Festival and exceeded the 2005 annual box office; MERMAID, FROM VEGAS TO MACAU 3 and THE MONKEY KING 2 have accumulated over 1.5 billion yuan RMB; MERMAID has already reached 1 billion RMB in 92 hours and become the fastest Chinese films to reach the mark in history. FROM VEGAS TO MACAU had 520 million and THE MONKEY KING 2 had 480 million. However Stephen Chow Sing Chi did not dare to underestimate his opponents as he continued to promote the film in the Mainland. Yesterday he went to Suzhou, then Ningbo, Fuzhou, Dalian, Changchun, Chongqing and Dongguan. Wong Jing claimed theft from FROM 3's Mainland box office. "Most recently we even learned that someone has been stealing our box office, but we can't find the source. In comparison to secretly stealing the box office, we can still tolerate being openly defamed a little more." FROM 3 might have box office success but its word of mouth could not be worse. Not only Hong Kong film critics said the film was beyond rotten, some Mainland cinemas even issued an apology online to viewers who have seen the film. "I don't understand why this gang of once superstars wouldn't be so picky with scripts. I also don't understand why Hong Kong film has fallen to this level. This 'film' is completely swindling money unprofessionally." The apology statement came from the China Film Stellar Theater Chain's Pingliang, Gansu cinema. It responded to the recent flood of criticism against FROM 3. The statement even said, "From now on, we will only schedule one day per day for this film. If you truly want to see it, please take note." It wholeheartedly did not suggest anyone to spend money to watch the film. After this apology was released, debates arose in the Mainland film industry. After a few hours the apology was removed. This year the Hong Kong Lunar New Year slot had 6 film releases. The Chow Yun Fat starred FROM VEGAS TO MACAU 3 (DOH SING FUNG WON III) from the Lunar 28th to the Lunar 3rd made almost HK$ 15 million over five days. The film company also released a New Spring trailer for the actors to wish the audience a Happy New Year! In second place was the animated film THE GOOD DINOSAUR with HK$ 10.72 million, in third was MERMAID with HK$ 13.31 million, in fourth was DEADPOOL with HK$ 10.72 million and in fifth was THE MONKEY KING 2 with HK$ 9.07 million. IP MAN 3 over 49 days in release made HK$ 59.31 million, in second place of the top ten cumulative box office and has hope to break 60 million to become the fourth Chinese film to break the mark. On the Lunar 3rd single day box office, Hong Kong films were no match for foreign films. DEADPOOL came in first with HK$ 4.29 million. MERMAID was in second with HK$ 3.41 million. * (2016/02/11) DEADPOOL yesterday opened on the Lunar 2nd (February 9th). Although it received a category III rating, it opened with HK$ 4,979,745 and defeated 3 Chinese Lunar New Year films MERMAID (MEI YUN YU), FROM VEGAS TO MACAU 3 (DOH SING FUNG WON III) and THE MONKEY KING 2 (SAI YAU GEI ji SUEN NG HUNG SAM DA BAK GWUT JING) to become the single day box office champion. In second place with HK$ 3,867,323 was MERMAID. In third was FROM III with HK$ 2,955,017 and in fourth was the animated film THE GOOD DINOSAUR with HK$ 2,446,002. In fifth was MONKEY 2 with HK$ 1,805,094. DEADPOOL opened on the Lunar 2nd, but with the Lunar New Year's Day late night box office of HK$ 868,522 it has already accumulated HK$ 5,848,267 and broke the Hong Kong category III film single day highest box office record. The Stephen Chow Sing Chi directed MERMAID accumulated as of 6:30PM last night HK$ 12 million since its Lunar New Year's Day opening. In the Mainland it made 700 million RMB over three days. FROM III made 400 million RMB while MONKEY 2 made almost 400 million RMB. Chow Yun Fat and "Fat Soh" Jasmine Tan, Carina Lau Ka Ling, Huang Xiaoming, Fan Bingbing, Ge You and famous directors Ann Hui On Waw, Tam Ka Ming earlier attended the Bona Spring Banquet in Beijing. As soon as Fat Gor arrived, workers lined up for photos with him. Fat Gor did not turn anyone away. Even Hui On Wa turned from "Big Director" into a "Little Fan" when she saw Fat Gor, as she followed him all night and took pictures like crazy! Fat Gor of course took a selfie with Hui On Wa and chatted with her. Later he also tok a loving selfie with Fat Soh. He also took a group photo with Ka Ling, Wong Jing and Andrew Lau Wai Keung. Fat Gor went all over and chatted with friends like Ge You. Xiaoming who left early greeted Fat Gor on his way out. Fat Soh even gave Xiaoming a peck. At the Spring Banquet, Bona announced its 2016 development plans like the Spring Festival release FROM VEGAS TO MACAU 3. The film as of the Lunar New 3rd already made over 400 million RMB. Chow Yun Fat and Lau Ka Ling of course deserved credit. At the Spring Banquet the film company invited them to be the guest presenters and swept up 50 Ka Ling designed watches as prizes. Fat Soh won again after winning last year. Ka Ling was very happy about the film's success. This year her Lunar New Year celebration was to watch all three Lunar New Year films. She thanked the audience for their support but screamed that she did not have "enough screen time". Ka Ling said, "I haven't worked with Hok Yau (Jacky Cheung) for many years. With so many people, I didn't get too much screen time. I hope next time we will have more." Ka Ling even said that she was very happy about everyone's love for a Hong Kong led film and urged Hong Kong filmmakers to keep working hard. * (2016/02/11) The Chinese New Year Race Meeting took place yesterday at the Sha Tin Race Course. Aaron Kwok Fu Sing, Adam Cheng Siu Chau and Mak Ling Ling were invited to be the morning joint performance guests. Dick Cheung Wai Kin, William So Wing Hong, Edmond Leung Hon Man and Alex Fong Lik Sun also showed their support. Sing Sing appeared first to wish everyone a Happy New Year and gave away movie tickets. Then Chau Guoon appeared to perform and gave away lai see. Sing Sing revealed that his new film THE MONKEY KING 2 (SAI YAU GEI ji SUEN NG HUNG SAM DA BAK GWUT JING) after two days in release already made over 300 million at the Mainland box office. He happily said, "Of course I am pleased, I have watched it three times myself. However Mommy hasn't seen it yet because she couldn't really move around. Last night I had New Year dinner with my brother and sister. Maybe I will book a show to watch it together. (Do you like to book a show?) Not necessarily, because I have to book it in advance!" He also said that many people after watching said that this film was well worth the price of admission, which made him so happy that he forgot about the pain from the production. As for a celebration he would have to wait for the film company to arrange it. He too wanted to see the team again during the celebration. On the Lunar 6th Sing Sing will continue work on his new film THE ETERNAL WAVE in Shanghai. I will play a special agent in the film. Sing Sing suffered an injury earlier. Now he has already scheduled a micro surgery for the end of March. "Many athletes have had this operation and recovered in one or two months. A full recovery however will take six. I will work hard at physical therapy. As long as I am not performing any highly difficult movement, with my abilities normal dancing shouldn't be a problem. However the insurance company might not approve the policy." Sing Sing also said that this year he will have four to five films including MBA PARTNERS, ONE NIGHT ONLY, COLD WAR 2 and ETERNAL WAVE. In August he will perform concerts in Hong Kong. * (2016/02/11) Dior Cheng Yi Kin, Jordan Chan Siu Chun, Chin Kar Lok, Jerry Lamb Hiu Fung and Michael Tse Tin Wa earlier "united" for a Lunar New Year photo shoot and even took the chance to announce the good news. After 20 some years they will work together on a film. They had tons of demands from the title, characters to the "cup size" of the actresses. Ekin asked for action scenes, Ah Lo asked for romance, Tin Wa wanted more female characters. As the director Chin Kar Lok promised a beautiful place for the location shoot. Kar Lok said, "The lead actress is very important. The five of us have certain class, of course I have to find actresses of a certain "cup size" to match us!" Ekin also said that he wanted to play a woman. Tin Wa suggested for Ekin to play his wife -- in a coma! Siu Chun suddenly said that he wanted to play a mute, which Kar Lok joked that he has always been mute! Ah Lo saw through Siu Chun's scheme. "You just don't want to learn your lines, it won't be that easy. The story starts with you as a mute, but you would recall 15 years ago before you were mute. You even really liked to speak, haha!" Ekin suggested for Siu Chun to narrate. Ah Lo joked that the audience would be asleep five minutes into the start of the film. Tin Wa joked that the subtitles had to be very clear. Speaking of the Year of the Monkey, Ah Lo joked, "I plan to host a charity dinner and dance at home to raise fund for the 'Bo Hei charity fund'." "Bo Hei" were the names of his sons! They even revealed that Tin Wa's New Year wish was to successfully enroll his son in the school of his choice. Although on camera the quintet took jabs at each other and fought over spots for photos. Yet off camera they got along just fine. They even designed the movement and the poses for each other. [ BLAH OF THE WEEK ] Columns, Reviews, Interviews 1. MING PAO DAILY, FEBRUARY 14 2016, FILM WORDS MERMAID IS FUNNY AND LOUD The Year of the Monkey Chinese and foreign Lunar New Year films are rather popular. Among the three major Chinese films, the Stephen Chow Sing Chi directed MERMAID (MEI YUN YU) leads for now. In Mainland China it even opens big as it rapidly reaches 1 billion yuan RMB at the box office. I also feel that MERMAID is the particularly fun and funny one among the three, at last the subject is fresher and not too familiar looking. Actually THE MONKEY KING 2 (SAI YAU GEI ji SUEN NG HUNG SAM DA BAK GWUT JING) was elegantly and thoughtfully made, but ultimately it still was recycling old material; FROM VEGAS TO MACAU 3 (DOH SING FUNG WON) has reached its third installment with a gathering of Hong Kong stars. It is very cheerful and funny, but inevitably it is the same old story. MERMAID Maintain Mischievous Comedy Sense Of course, MERMAID is also a variation of old material. Long ago there was the world famous Andersen fairy tale, Tom Hanks early on in 1984 starred in the modern romantic comedy SPLASH; but seemingly no Chinese film has brought mermaids into the modern era. This time the story inspiration seems to be from the Andersen fairy tale. Chow Sing Chi smartly turns the prince into a rich kid who gets rich from real estate, taking the chance to poke fun at the money comes first, madly opportunistic, evil and heartless business current situation of Greater China to promote environmental protection and natural organism rescue. It can be considered timely. In the story the real estate tycoon wants to turn the beautiful bay into a land fill. He drives the sea creatures to the brink, leading the mermaids to fight for their survival as they send mermaid Jelly Lin Yun to assassinate the rich kid Deng Chao. As the story develops, the rivals as usual become lovers, the tycoon is affected but leads his evil business partners to begin the slaughter...... Fortunately, when Chow Sing Chi directs but not act he maintains the mischievous comedy sense. Many scenes have brutal comedy material. Both leads are good. Deng Chao goes from the arrogant and rude nouveau riche gradually into loving and honorable. He is very lively; Lin Yun at first is like an ugly duckling, then shows her true mermaid side. She is energetic and mischievous while pure and cute. When they have roasted chicken and sung classic hits the scene was particularly fun, funny and romantic. Kitty Zhang Yuqi plays the sexy and sophisticated business woman. Wen Zhang and Lee Sheung Ching as the two police officers at the station are very humorous. Chow Sing Chi comedy films have always been more grass root than deluxe packaged, he even loves to shoot the ugly. In MERMAID's opening the "Hall of Monsters" chief Yang Neng is poor, old and gross. The bay mermaid world is also antiquated in its special effects, torn, worn and living in a sunken ship. The leader the old mermaid is very ugly, only Lin Yun looks good. Wonderfully the Show Lo (Law Chi Cheung) played octopus is energetic and interesting. His performance as he is being cooked in the restaurant has both laughter and tears. Honestly, this film has many exaggerated and excessive spots. I am the most upset at the businesswoman leading armed troops to slaughter the mermaids near the end. She is so completely lawless and very unreasonable that I have to take off points. Luckily the finale is decent and the ending makes people happy. (three out of five star) FROM VEGAS TO MACAU 3 Meets Lunar New Year Demands As for FROM VEGAS TO MACAU 3, it is the typical Wong Jing Lunar New Year film. He and Andrew Lau Wai Keung co-directed with Chung Siu Hung with additional material and firepower. Mainly Chow Yun Fat plays dumb for laughs. He has already played dumb from a head injury over 20 years ago in GOD OF GAMBLERS (DOH SUN), like the Dustin Hoffman played autistic brother who wins at the casino in the 1988 American award winning hit RAIN MAN. Wong Jing turned the brother Tom Cruise into disciple Andy Lau Tak Wa. Another main source of comedy is the half smart half dumb Nick Cheung Ka Fai. With support from Carina Lau Ka Ling, Jacky Cheung Hok Yau, Chris Lee Yuchun, Law Kar Ying, Shawn Yue Man Lok, Charles Heung Wa Keung and his son Jacky Heung Jor, the film has super strong star power. FROM VEGAS TO MACAU 3 meets the Lunar New Year demand of cheer and laughs. Everyone knows it is childish and absurd so they do not care too much. Actually Wong Jing has been through some rough storms, he has been pushed around and propped up yet he has been able to squeeze and stretch. After decades he is still standing in the Hong Kong film industry, which is no simple task. I of course would not ask for too much out of this film, but I also would not praise it. (two and a half out of five star) - SHEK KEI 2. TA KUNG PAO, FEBRUARY 12 2016, FILM AND TELEVISION MARKET TREND LUNAR NEW YEAR FILMS HAVE YET NOT SHOWN THEIR TRUE COLORS Today is the Lunar 5th, may Hong Kong film reach great heights of success and still strive to improve. This year the Lunar New Year's Day happened to be a Monday. Three Chinese Lunar New Year films did not open until the Lunar New Year's Day. Thus last week's box office could not tell the New Spring slot performance. Two family Hollywood animation blockbusters took the top two spots. THE GOOD DINOSAUR with HK$ 5.78 million came in first and overwhelmingly defeated the second place ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS THE ROAD CHIP's HK$ 2.14 million. This result was similar to their U.S. box office. DINOSAUR made US$ 120.66 million while CHIPMUNKS made US$ 83.67 million. Disney and Pixar indeed were better at grasping the animation audience's taste. Also, DIRTY GRANDPA made HK$ 1.42 million in third place. Over three weeks it accumulated HK$ 10.34 million; THE REVENANT made HK$ 770,000 in fourth place, over five weeks it made HK$ 20.89 million; THE BIG SHORT made HK$ 760,000 in fifth place, over three weeks it made HK$ 5.56 million. In the Mainland, KUNG FU PANDA 3 made 100.53 million RMB to remain in first place. Over two weeks it made 678.09 million RMB. The film opened simultaneously in the U.S. and made US$ 70.84 million, the performance was actually behind China's. The Mainland Lunar New Year film, the Gao Qunshu directed, Zhao Benshan and Yan Ni starred THE NEW YEAR'S EVE OF OLD LEE made 46.01 million RMB in second place in only an average showing; CHIPMUNKS made 9.31 million RMB in third place, over two weeks it made 59.73 million RMB; STAR WARS THE FORCE AWAKENS made 8.18 million RMB in fourth place, over five weeks it made 824.04 million RMB; the Mainland animation BOONIE BEARS III made 6.56 million RMB in fifth place, over four weeks it made 274.89 million RMB. The three Chinese Lunar New Year films held advanced screenings. FROM VEGAS TO MACA U3 (DOH SING FUNG WON III) made 6.17 million RMB in sixth place and led by a nose; the Stephen Chow Sing Chi directed MERMAID (MEI YUN YU) made 4.76 million RMB in eighth place; THE MONKEY KING 2 (SAI YAU GEI ji SUEN NG HUNG SAM DA BAK GWUT JING) made 2.29 million RMB in twelfth place. This week all three films would bust out of the gate, this week they will show their true colors with results to be continued next week. Last week this column divided up last year's film releases by language. English films whether in quantity or box office reigned supreme, Chinese films could only come in second with only half the amount of English films and almost 1/3 of the English film box office. Other foreign language films took up only 6.7% and 23.6% of the box office. More outstanding were Japanese films. In comparison to the data two years ago, 140 films were in English, 49% of the year's 283 films. Their box office was HK$ 1,124,320,000, 70% of the total box office of HK$ 1,600,840,000 and similar to last year; 76 were Chinese films, 26.7% of the market with HK$ 18.47 million at the box office, 26% of the total. The quantity was similar to last year but the box office was slightly better. Among them 44 were Cantonese films, 15% of the market with HK$ 358.29 million or 22% of the total box office; 32 were Putonghua films, 11% of the market with HK$ 60.18 million or 3.7% of the total box office. Cantonese box office was better than last year's. 67 were foreign films, 23.5% of the market with HK$ 58.03 million or 3.6% of the total box office. The quantity was similar to last year's but the box office was better last year, which mainly had to do with the better Japanese film performance last week. Two years ago 34 were Japanese films, 11.9% of the market with HK$ 37.26 million or 2.3% of the total box office. In comparison to last year's HK$ 106.83 million, the difference was 2.8 times. 12 were European language films, 4.2% of the market with HK$ 5.62 million or 0.35% of the total box office. Film quantity was the same as last year's but the box office was better last year with HK$ 7.2 million or 0.38%. 55 were Asian language films, 19.3% of the market with HK$ 52.41 million or 3.2% of the total box office. The number of films was similar to last year's but the box office of course was better last year due to Japanese films. 10 were French films and made HK$ 4.8 million. Last year only 5 were in French and made HK$ 1.5 million; 4 were Thai films with HK$ 5.19 million. Last year only 1 was a Thai film with HK$ 220,000. To be continued next week. - LAM KAM BO 3. TA KUNG PAO, FEBRUARY 11 2016, ASIAN FILMS MERMAID: BORRWING THE STRENGTH OF HONG KONG POPULAR CULTURE Stephen Chow Sing Chi is probably the most famous Hong Kong filmmaker this Lunar New Year. His 24 year old film ALL'S WELL ENDS WELL (GA YAU HEI SI) extended version will be released again. His latest film as a director MERMAID (MEI YUN YU) is even a Lunar New Year blockbuster. As soon as it opened it broke Mainland and Hong Kong box office records, it could be considered another peak for his film career. Seemingly the director finds his breakthrough after no longer performing on screen. - HUNG KWONG In MERMAID, a wealthy businessman won the bid for land in a bay area and put sonar in the sea to drive away all sea life in order for him to conduct his land fill project. The mermaids in the bay cannot survive and sends the mermaid who usually goes to the human world to shop for the race to assassinate the businessman. In their exchange they fall for each other, the businessman thus decides to turn off the sonar and stop the land fill. Their relationship upset the rich girl who is after the businessman. She is determined to drive the mermaid to extinction......a modern Chinese mermaid princess fairy tale, the leads in the film, whether they are nouveau riche or aliens without any knowledge of the human world at first, by the end all have hearts of gold and are very kind. A film with a simple and healthy world view like the "black and white vampires" not only says a few words about environmental protection but also needs to have even more selling point to support its Lunar New Year film stature. Otherwise its current box office surge would be hard to explain. The Wealthy Setting Turns Realistic One of the film's selling point probably is the "mermaid". The mermaid, octopus guy (Show Lo) and other sea fairy tale creatures, even the sunken ship they hid in are all products of computer animation. Speaking of which, the last Chow Sing Chi directed film JOURNEY TO THE WEST: CONQUERING THE DEMONS (SAI YAU GONG MOR PIN) also used a lot of computer special effects. The opening water demon scene was a rehearsal for MERMAID's underwater world. The computer special effects that are placed into live action performance this time are not as many as the last film. Ultimately it is a movie with a "real world" background, and these special effects are able to naturally merge with the comedy material. Aside from special effects, the nonstop comedy supports this story. Basically the comedy is in two categories, how the businessman led nouveau riche show off their wealth and putting the mermaids in a stranger in a strange land position to show how unaccustomed they are to the human world. Speaking of which, the nouveau riche setting was frequently seen in Chow Sing Chi films and even the 80s Hong Kong films. They would even show off luxury cars like in the MERMAID opening. However, 80s Hong Kong could not rival the wealth of today's Mainland tycoons. That thorough showing off of wealth and the "stubbornness" in the film seemed to have exceeded the handling of comedy and became realistic. Neither Good Nor Bad Comedy Actually, the most entertaining part of Chow Sing Chi's comedy is the pace of his performance. That so called "Mo Le Tau" performance method conquered the entire Chinese language circle. This interpretation method would be hard for those after him to imitate and was also the biggest difference between his work as a direction and as an actor. To viewers who grew up in the 80s Hong Kong, this interpretation method was a part of their adolescence. Aside from Chow Sing Chi's performance on the children television program, at the time much of the Japanese animation shown on television stations were fantasy. Character reactions and dialogues were out of bounds. They were the so called "nonsense" animation series like DR. SLUMP and URUSEI YATSURA. When Chow Sing Chi started to have a chance to perform in series and films in the late 80s young viewers at the time were already prepared to accept "Mo Le Tau". Thus, Chow Sing Chi film's comedy relied on two segments. One was his unique performance rhythm, which was very hard to reproduce after he left the camera. His successors at most would only be able to learn his form. In addition, as he grew older, Chow Sing Chi himself became more serious. Whether he would be able to achieve the Mo Le Tau performance effect actually remained a mystery. His future might depend on his ability to adjust the comedic scenes. In this area it could only be said that he was neither good nor bad. On the other hand, Chow Sing Chi films has always used the 70s and 80s Hong Kong popular culture nourishment for their source of comedy, from the early manga, animation, music, Cantonese films and television series, everything has been transplanted to his film stories. MERMAID too took this route, like using the Japanese animation GETTER ROBO theme song in comedy scenes. Perhaps it would be harder for this generation of viewers to get excited about. Yet connecting the entire film with the 80s TVB series LEGEND OF THE CONDOR HEROES (SEH DIU YING HUNG JUEN)'s theme song, although its meaning was unclear (what did the prodigal tycoon return to save the earth had to do with the duel on Huashan?) at least many viewers of the entire Chinese language circle would know the song and very naturally relate to it. Here, MERMAID like LOST IN HONG KONG that was knocked out at the box office more or less borrowed from the power of Hong Kong popular culture. 4. TA KUNG PAO, FEBRUARY 11 2016, LIGHT SHADOW PATH FILM VERSION CONTROVERSY Today is the Lunar 4th, may all the readers have good health and all their wishes come true. Different versions of the same film often led to controversy. Earlier a rather strong film after over a month in release released a different version. The debate lay with whether the director's cut was excellent or the famous editor's version was better. The writer only saw the latter, indeed its style was close to a Wong Kar Wai film. However he thought that this version did not pass because the version that the writer saw was a short version. Unfortunately some places were "shorten" for the sake of being short and left viewers confused. Because when viewers watched they did not know whether the version was the director orchestrated (or agreed) edition, the writer kept thinking why the director hated the male protagonist so much but still let him star throughout the movie. Actually, under the editor's cut, all of the main plot of the male protagonist was cut to pieces. No chance to put the shot on the lead actor's co-stars was missed. Simply said, the lead actor's performance was completely removed and left in a passive position. Obviously it was different from the director's original intention. Later the writer learned about the director's cut. Although he has not seen it it definitely would be the director's original intent. Film editing undoubtedly was another creative process, but when its product already had a problem it would not be a good creation. In particular when the editor was not the original film's producer and crew member, he or she should understand the film content and the creator's original intent as personal preference would have to adhere to objective facts. Even more frequently seen was due to film length, those in charge would ask an "expert" to edit the film. Many the editing would make matter worse. Most recently a yet to be completed film reflected the frequently seen mistake. Originally the film had two main plots, one was the story of the murderer and the other was the story of the cop. Their connections were a type of illness and father and daughter relationship. Due to film length, the "expert" cut out the cop's part about the illness, reduced the cop's father and daughter relationship in half and added "narrative history". The cop went from the lead to a support player. The biggest problem was the complete disintegration of the original design. The "expert" even put the murder scene in the forefront due to film commercial point, then kill again later. The film could not be further from its original intent. This film producer asked the writer for his opinion. The writer honestly stated the flaws. In order for the film to be commercial, please ask the director to shoot it again. Because the original intent was to make an alternative film that makes people consider social problems and not a commercial film. Editing is not a cure all, it can only improve a film's quality in limited capacity. Unless some designs messed up the facts, there would be no reason for editing. With another new film, the writer wanted to remove several shots because the film was shot in the 80s. Buildings that appeared were built only a few years ago, so they must be removed. The writer told the director this was only a suggestion. If it conflicted too much with your willingness then please give it up. Creation ultimately sure be based on the creator's willingness and original intent. - TIN LIK [ In Production Now/Soon ] Can : Wong Pai Dau Wong Pai d. Moon is eldest brother and head of the family. The film begins with the celebration of his 7th anniversary wedding with Leng, which celebration he deserts, preferring instead the company of his mistress. He turns up at home with her later, forcing his wife (whom he calls 'hag') to leave the house in dismay. Although she is very devoted to her husband and tolerates him for all his misbehaviors, her tolerance stops short of accepting his mistress openly in the family home. So is an effeminate floral arranger and lecturer at an art school, who is good at cooking and enjoys women's hobbies. His second cousin Mo-seung comes to his house on that same evening, and entirely devours an elaborate gourmet banquet which So had intended as a gift for Leng on her otherwise disastrous wedding anniversary. From that day on, So and Mo-seung are constantly at loggerheads over trivial issues, insulting each other with vulgar metaphors during a mahjong game session, apparently irreconcilable. She is convinced that Foon shares her romantic outlook and they soon become lovers. Foon, however, is a notorious playboy not eager to settle down. Predictably, Holli-yuk catches him in an act of infidelity. After a freak accident leaves Foon suffering from a mildly debilitating mental illness, Holli-yuk offers to become a nurse for him. Taking advantage of her role as his nurturer, she gleefully devises methods to punish him for his callous behaviour. The brothers' dilemmas are later resolved in similarly titled sequel films.
