The Stephen Chow Sing Chi directed MERMAID (MEI YUN YU) opened on the Lunar New Year's Day (February 8th) with over HK$ 4.9 million, breaking Sing Yeh's 2004 KUNG FU HUSTLE (GONG FU)'s HK$ 4.42 million opening day record. On Lunar New Year's Day, second among the Hong Kong box office was FROM VEGAS TO MACAU 3 (DOH SING FUNG WON III) with HK$ 3.35 million. In third was the animation THE GOOD DINOSAUR with HK$ 2.55 million. In fourth place was THE MONKEY KING 2 (SAI YAU GEI ji SUEN NG HUNG SAM DA BAK GWUT JING) with HK$ 2.22 million. In the Mainland, aside from MERMAID in first place, second place was FROM 3 with 180 million RMB. In third was THE MONKEY KING with HK$ 170 million RMB. According to information from MERMAID, the film opened in Hong Kong with HK$ 4,941,149 (data from the Hong Kong Motion Picture Industry Association and the Hong Kong Theatres Association's Hong Kong Box Office Co. Ltd.) and set a new Hong Kong Chinese film opening record as it broke Chow Sing Chi's 2004 film KUNG FU HUSTLE HK$ 4,427,153 record. MERMAID made HK$ 668,176 from the February 7th advanced late night screenings. With the Lunar New Year's Day opening, the cumulative box office was HK$ 5,609,325. MERMAID's Mainland cumulative box office was 280 million RMB, which gave it the highest Chinese film opening day box office in Chinese film history and broke five records: the biggest opening day for Chinese film, the highest single day take for Chinese film, the highest Spring Festival single day take, the fastest to reach 100 million (with advanced screening) Chinese film and the fastest to reach 200 million. MERMAID, FROM VEGAS TO MACAU 3 and THE MONKEY KING 3 made over 600 million RMB on the Lunar New Year's Day in the Mainland. FROM 3 opened in Hong Kong on February 6th. As of the Lunar New Year's Day its cumulative box office was HK$ 8.76 million. According to Sina Entertainment THE MONKEY KING 2's cumulative Mainland box office was 172 million yuan RMB. In Hong Kong it made HK$ 2,224,811 on the Lunar New Year's Day in fourth place; in third was THE GOOD DINOSAUR with Hk$ 2,552,293. At the same time, IP MAN 3 has already reached HK$ 59 million and prepared to break 60 million. With its current trend it has hope to become the fourth Chinese film to reach HK$ 60 million. The other three were two Sing Yeh films KUNG FU HUSTLE and SHAOLIN SOCCER, as well as YOU ARE THE APPLE OF MY EYE. * (2016/02/08) International film star Jackie Chan and former "James Bond" Pierce Brosnan starred Hollywood action thriller THE FOREIGNER is heating in production in London. The film shot an explosion scene that some mistook for a terrorist attack and called the police about it. The film three days ago blew up a double deck bus on the Lambeth Bridge over the Thames in the center of London. Many did not know that a film production was taking and thought a terrorist attack has taken place. The police received two reports and later immediately clarified that it was a false alarm. During the scene Jackie Chan was on the set; THE FOREIGNER's producer later said that before the shoot the production has already notified the residents and put up notices. At the same time they used warning signs. However some still felt upset and complained to the government. The London authorities said that the Lambeth Bridge was already closed before the shoot and the fire department was present in case of any accident. Jackie Chan said, "Before the shoot roadblocks were set up and notices were posted to inform everyone. When I learned that people mistook its for a terrorist attack I was surprised too!" The production applied for the explosion for half a year before approval. Now it still has several explosion scenes and the production is estimated to finish by mid March. * (2016/02/08) The Wong Jing directed Lunar New Year film FROM VEGAS TO MACAU 3 (DOH SING FUNG WON III) opened in Hong Kong. Despite all the controversy a strong cast with Chow Yun Fat, Nick Cheung Ka Fai, Jacky Cheung Hok Yau and comedy the film was perfect for the Lunar New Year. On the 29th FROM 3 successfully defeated many films like THE GOOD DINOSAUR and ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS THE ROAD CHIP. Its single day take of HK$ 2.7 million brought it to the top of the Hong Kong box office. On the Lunar New Year's Day yesterday FROM 3 continued to thrive. As of 6PM it was in second place among the Lunar New Year films with HK$ 2.83 million. The film in the Mainland easily passed 100 million with a single day take of 150 million. As for other films, Stephen Chow Sing Chi's MERMAID (MEI YUN YU) made 230 million while THE MONKEY KING 2 (SAI YAU GEI ji SUEN NG HUNG SAM DA BAK GWUT JING) made 140 million RMB on a single day in the Mainland. * (2016/02/07) The Wong Jing directed Lunar New Year film FROM VEGAS TO MACAU 3 (DOH SING FUNG WON 3) not only has been boycotted recently but also received IMDb's lowest score ever. Yesterday the IMDb score hit a new low to 1.1. Although voter numbers grew to 348, 335 or 96.3% only gave it 1 point. Even if 4 people gave it 10 points the score would have difficulty rising. As of two days ago, the animated film THE GOOD DINOSAUR with HK$ 1.8 million became the film with the highest admission rate. FROM 3 and THE MONKEY KING 2 (SAI YAU GEI ji SUEN NG HUNG SAM DA BAK GWUT JING) came in second and third with HK$ 1.76 million and 1.1 million. * (2016/02/07) This Lunar New Year is very cheerful at the movies, with Stephen Chow Sing Chi's MERMAID (MEI YUN YU), Wong Jing's FROM VEGAS TO MACAU 3 (DOH SING FUNG WON 3) and the Soi Cheang Po Shui directed, Aaron Kwok Fu Sing and Gong Li starred THE MONKEY KING 2 (SAI YAU GEI ji SUEN NG HUNG SAM DA BAK GWUT JING) against the Marvel production DEADPOOL. In terms of star power FROM definitely would be th strongest, but Wong Jing earlier posted online, "Some idiot says that he urges all Hong Kong people not to watch my movie. By my calculation less than 200,000 people support people like you, most of them are either poor or unemployed......" His comment upset many Hong Kong people and many viewers have said that they would stay away from the film to boycott Wong Jing. FROM has already reached its third installment. Although this time it has Chow Yun Fat, Andy Lau Tak Wa, Nick Cheung Ka Fai and others, it has the worst word of mouth. Hong Kong Film Blog two nights ago posted a FROM view with the subject OLD FILM REHEATED, OBSTRACTING COMMERCIALS, BEYOND ROTTEN! The film also broke the lowest rating record on IMDb with 1.3 points. Instead Cheang Po Shui's MONKEY had decent word of mouth, the production was much improved from the first film. * (2016/02/06) Chapman To Man Chak earlier went to work on movies in Malaysia. His upcoming film THE MOB FATHERS (SUEN LO JOR) through the election of a mob leader satirizes the unfairness of the current Hong Kong political ecology. It completely is a Hong Kong film. Released last night, THE MOB FATHERS highlight was about the mob pretending to be democratic as it held an election with one vote per person. In the end it was fake democracy, actually under whoever's leadership the mob boss would benefit the most would win the small circle election. Performing this mob act for the boss was Anthony Wong Chau Sun. Chau Sun represented the Mainland, the leader that he appointed was like 689 Leung Chun Ying. Ah Jat in the MOB production highlight said, "This is an unfair standard. The story is about how to overturn this standard." The film had three leaders Lee Lung Kei, Donny Summer (Ha Siu Sing) and Big L Cheung Hau Mo. Big L nailed the topic right on the head. "The film has many incredible stuff that is very similar to the society now." * (2016/02/06) Sun Entertainment Culture's films A NAIL CLIPPER ROMANCE and ROBBERY (LO LUP) were selected for the Osaka Asian Film Festival competition and participation respectively. NAIL starred Joseph Chang and Zhou Dongyu, who will vie for the Best Actor and Best Actress honors. Industry insiders, media film critics and famous film magazines all gave good reviews as the film reached "zero bad review" excellent word of mouth. A world renowned film magazine film critic said that the film was excellent, the production was thorough and elevated the visual effects. Sing Sing and Gong Li's centerpiece performance had quite a presence. MONKEY's global advanced screenings for industry professionals was a show of confidence in its film quality. The other two Chinese Lunar New Year meanwhile continued to remain mysterious. The film yesterday released the character posters. Gong Li as the demon king White Bone Spirit was very dominating. The King Kong band in front of her gave a preview of her battle with Sun Wukong. Sing Sing as Sun Wukong looked vicious and baffled. The "King" Kris Philips (Fei Xiang)'s identity remained a mystery. The blood red wine glass in his hand drew people in. * (2016/02/06) The 40th Hong Kong International Film Festival brings good news to Bruce Lee fans. Bruce Lee films like THE BIG BOSS, FIST OF FURY, RETURN OF THE DRAGON and THE GAME OF DEATH have gone through 4K digital technology restoration. The restored films would feel richer visually, better for viewers to understand Lee's martial art philosophy of "knowing the hero and respecting the hero" throughout his films. * (2016/02/05) Leon Lai Ming will be the 12th Hong Kong Entertainment Expo promotional ambassador. "Some friends asked us whether we would go topless to celebrate the box office success, I answer of course. In addition actually I already did in the movie. If everyone want to watch it clearly, you can go and watch during the joy of the New Year." * (2016/02/05) The six months pregnant Aimee Chan Yan Mei earlier promoted for the Chapman To Man Chak starred and directed film LET'S EAT (HOI FAN LA!) all over Malaysia and Singapore. Yan Mei was so tough that she won To Man Chak's praises. "She is great. Because she is pregnant, we worried that she wouldn't come to promote. However she came without saying another word. She even went to so many places. I really have to thank her!" They were rather popular with the people of Kuala Lumpur, everywhere they went was jam packed. Living for awhile in Singapore and Malaysia to write the script, Ah Jat during the promotion not only gave valuable nourishment to Aimee but also took her to have the famous local Lunar New Year food "Lo Sheng". Ah Jat hoped that Aimee would "work more and have more children, the more she gives birth to the more she has!" During the film's Singapore premiere, To Man Chak's wife Kristal Tin Yui Nei appeared. Ah Jat joking praised Ah Tin and Chan Yan Mei. "Yan Mei is great, before she came she tried on over 40 dresses before choosing this one for the premiere. My wife Ah Tin is also great. She tried on one dress and chose it for the premiere." At the premiere, Ah Jat also constantly lent a hand to Yan Mei who wore heels. "She is very vain, she wears heels even when she is pregnant. Truly every step is a thrill. I lent her a hand the whole time, I didn't dare to hesitate." * (2016/02/04) The Best Actors Chow Yun Fat, Nick Cheung Ka Fai, Jacky Cheung Hok Yau and Carina Lau Ka Ling starred, Wong Jing produced, Andrew Lau Wai Keung directed Lunar New Year film FROM VEGAS TO MACAU 3 (DOH SING FUNG WON III) has begun its national promotion. After Chow Yun Fat's appearance in Guangzhou, Wong Jing yesterday appeared in Shanghai with Cheung Ka Fai and shared their production experience with viewers. Ka Fai who once performed a film theme song was asked if his singing bug would act up. He joked, "In the film I sang, I sang and rapped. In addition I wanted to sing the film song FREEZE FRAME with my brother (Cheung Hok Yau), but he said that I sang too well in the film. He was afraid that I would steal his thunder and didn't agree. So I don't envy them." In addition, the film yesterday released the "Director Decoded" production special. Chow Yun Fat, Lau Ka Ling and Cheung Hok Yau revealed that Director Lau Wai Keung was nervous on the set. Ka Ling said, "I constantly heard, 'I have a lot of pressure'!" As the Venerable Tang Monk and Piggy, Mainland stars Feng Shaofeng and Xiao Shenyang promoted in Hong Kong. They said that they had many scenes with Gong Li and could not stop praising how charming she was. Xiao Shenyang stated that he was under her spell! Shaogeng admired Gong Li for working 26 hours straight without any need for sleep. Normally she was very lovable and easy to get along with. As for the Pretty Monkey King role, Shaofeng and Xiao Shenyang said that they once thought about playing it but admitted that Kwok Fu Sing was the most suitable choice. Shaofeng said, "Sing Sing has dance experience, he was drenched with sweat from all the fight scenes but he still was full of energy. He never complained at all." Speaking of the make up and costumes in the film, they both said that they helped them to be in character more. Shaofeng said, "The Tang Monk has always worn red, but my blue costume was very new and gave a greener impression like I would make a mistake!" Was he the most handsome Tang Monk in history? Shaofeng said that he did not dare to claim that. Instead he said that Xiao Shenyang was the most handsome Piggy. Gong Li was asked in a Mainland interview why she was willing to play the "White Bone Spirit". She admitted that after making COMING HOME she wanted to make a completely opposite character. "I turned down many films in between. If I can't surpass my past performance, I fail. I have to be the best!" The film company yesterday released a Lunar New Year photo with "the master and the disciples" Sing Sing, Shaofeng, Xiao Shenyang and Law Chung Him in costume with Lunar New Year couplets to wish everyone an early Happy New Year. They washed away the more solemn feeling of the film and appeared to be mischievous! * (2016/02/04) Edwin Siu Ching Nam, Priscilla Wong Chui Yu, Bosco Wong Chung Chak, Louis Cheung Kai Chung, Moon Lau Pui Yuet and Gloria Tang Pui Yee yesterday morning worked on Edwin and Chui Yu's wedding scene for their new series MO HAU WAN GA (BEHIND THE SCENE PLAYER) at the Causeway Bay ClubONE. When he heard the news he immediately called director Nick Cheung Ka Fai, who was also very happy. However Ah Chung was even happier that Michael Ning (Bak Ji) was also nominated and bet big on him winning. Ah Chung said, "I have confidence in myself, but I have even more confidence in Bak Ji because his sacrifice was greater than mine. In the film he had to butcher the corpse, for which he is still on a vegetarian diet. However under Ka Fai's adjustment, my acting wasn't disappointing. Ka Fai told me to adjust my state of mind as well, just participate like I was going to a party. I really like Lau Ching Wan anyway, I am going to watch him host." * (2016/02/04) Media Asia Group's artists last year performed well in film and music. Hok Yau did very well too, sooner or later he will win." Ching Wan said that he was very familiar with the nominees and it was very hard for him to say who he would like to win. To Sir joked, "Don't say it even if you want to." As for To Sir, he said, "I neither participate nor watch, I don't care. Nominate me if you like to, don't if you don't." Lam Ka Yun said, "I am very happy to hear the news, at the same time I am very, very, very scared because I still have a lot to learn on my film journey. MING PAO DAILY, FEBRUARY 9 2016, FILM WORDS THRICE STRUCK THE WHITE BONE SPIRIT AND MAO ZEDONG The Year of the Monkey celebration cannot be without the Great Heaven Uniting Saint Monkey King Sun Wukong. Today's column is about THE MONKEY KING 2 (SAI YAU GEI ji SUEN NG HUNG SAM DA BAK GWUT JING), the other Chinese and foreign Lunar New Year films will have to wait until next time. Two years ago THE MONKEY KING (SAI YAU GEI ji DA LAU TIN GUNG) had almost all Hong Kong on and off screen talent with a lot of 3D computer special effects. Actually it was not well made and I was very disappointed. Yet the film made over 1 billion yuan RMB in Mainland China, again proving that JOURNEY TO THE WEST was a high market gold mine. Now the sequel THE MONKEY KING 2 still has Soi Cheang Po Shui as its director. The production even spares no expense. The cast is drastically different. Sun Wukong is no longer Donnie Yen Chi Tan, but the Bull Demon King from the last film Aaron Kwok Fu Sing. It also has Gong Li as the White Bone Spirit, Feng Shaofeng as the Tang Monk, Xiao Shenyang as Piggy and Law Chung him as Sand Monk, none of them appeared in the last film. More Serious Than Mischievous, Sorrow More Than Joy Actually, THE MONKEY KING 2 performs better in every aspect than the previous film. Buddha crushed the Monkey King under a rock for several centuries after he caused havoc in the Heavenly Palace. The Venerable Tang Monk rescues him. He in turn protects the monk on his journey with Piggy and Sand Monk as they officially begin the long journey to the west for scriptures. The plot was based on chapter 27 of JOURNEY TO THE WEST "THE CORPSE FIEND THRICE TRICKS TANG SANZHANG, THE HOLY MONK ANGRILY DISMISSES THE HANDSOME MONKEY KING". The Corpse Fiend is Madame White Bone who wants to eat the Tang Monk's flesh. Sun Wukong's "golden fiery ears" uncovers all three of her transformations. Yet the Tang Monk mistakes Sun Wukong for killing the innocent and tightens his band to punish him. He even dissolves their master and disciple relationship as he is dismissed back to the Flower Fruit Mountain. Because of the success of the Mainland film market, the film has ample funding and imports more and more Hollywood technology. The film achieves variety in incredible special effects. Of course the visual details are still somewhat distant from large Hollywood productions. Fortunately it borrows foreign advanced special effects to display Chinese style fantasy, instead of just keeping imitating the West and Japan. The golden band, King Kong staff, golden fiery eyes are all unique on their own. Madame White Bone is especially exotic and changing, mysterious and eye catching. The skeleton army is also decent. Is it very entertaining? Inevitably it would depend on the viewer. Many viewers would probably feel it is selling special effects, no matter how much it changes it cannot compare to Hollywood. I feel it is more serious than mischievous, with sorrow more than joy. Yet fortunately the story and the characters hit the mark. The adaptation from the original work also has new ideas instead of random changes and parodies. In terms of concepts, aside from director Cheang Po Shui, screen writers Ran Ping, Ran Jinanan and Wen Ning also make contributions. THRICE STRUCK WHITE BONE SPIRIT: Poetry With Political Implication History about and Guo Moruo Mao Zedong must be mentioned. As early as 1961, Guo Moruo after watching the Shaoxing, Zhejiang opera troupe's performance of SUN WUKONG THRICE STRUCK THE WHITE BONE SPIRIT wrote a seven verse poems to criticize the idiocy of the Tang Monk. Mao Zedong replied with another poetry, expressing that what the Tang Monk did was understandably. The real evil was the White Bone Spirit and must be eradicated. Guo Moruo thus added more to Mao's poem and presented it to him. Back then Mao Zedong was high ranked but in a dangerous position, he was upset with the moderates in power. This THRICE STRUCK WHITE BONE SPIRIT poem was full of political implications. He compared himself to the Golden Monkey Great Saint Sun, who had to use the staff to defeat the moderates' "evil fog". Later Mao Zedong started the Great Cultural Revolution to knock off and vilify those in power, leading to a decade of disaster that was much more harmful than the White Bone Spirit. Different Mao Rhetoric Vindicates Monsters Whether intentionally or otherwise, THE MONKEY KING 2's tone was the opposite of Mao Zedong's. Like MONSTER HUNT it vindicates the monster. Basically Sun Wukong and Piggy who have been popular for several centuries in China and East Asia are monsters themselves. Obviously when monsters turn into phantoms they may not become disasters! This film even further sympathizes with Madame White Bone. Although she has done countless evil deeds her previous life as human was rather tragic and painful. Thus she wants to become a fiend forever after eating the Tang Monk's flesh to avoid reincarnation to become human again. Although this adaptation does not match the original work, it does not violate the JOURNEY TO THE WEST's principle of praising the prodigal monsters. This film also disagrees with the idea that the Tang Monk is a total idiot. His kindness undoubtedly makes him easy to fool and blames Sun Wukong needlessly. Yet in the film the Tang Monk "knows more than he leads on" as he sincerely cares and saves the world. His final decision of "if I don't go to Hell, who would" to sacrifice him and save the White Bone Spirit, I feel, is the "open ending" that is the best work of the entire film. As for how the Tang Monk is resurrected, how would Madame White Bone transform, they bring the interesting intrigue of to be continued. Outstanding Kwok Fu Sing, Piggy Misses The Mark As for the cast, Aaron Kwok Fu Sing as Sun Wukong is rather good and unlike the previous film's Yen Chi Tan who had an ambiguous face and no expression. Gong Li as White Bone Spirit costume has quite a lot of disguises. Flying back and forth she is fully a femme fatale; she also turns into an old lady and a mortal woman colorfully. In the past the Tang Monk has often only been a support player on the silver screen while the Monkey King stole the spotlight. This time Feng Shaofeng is better both with his appearance and his temperament, as his role becomes important. I am the most displeased with Xiao Shenyang as Piggy. He is not fat enough and even less funny, no match for Sand Monk Law Chung Him's "AVATAR" style costume. Unfortunately the character of Piggy misses the mark, and is unable to add the comedic feel that this film should have. (three and a half out of five star) - SHEK KEI 2. APPLE DAILY, FEBRUARY 2016, I CAME FOR OTHER PEOPLE'S FUN 4/5 WORK, 1/5 NOVEL When I was younger I once worked as a full time screen writer at a film company. At the time I would always feel all the projects that the company asked me to participate in had no way to truly demonstrate my real talent, Like I was just a gear that only pleased the company. Wherever direction the company wanted me to go, I could only try to coordinate technically. It did not enable my creativity to take shape. This type of big fish in a small pond feeling was like a Chinese chess grandmaster being forced to give up both chariots, horses and cannons to battle with only pawns across the river, leading me to go to work with this type of emotion all day and night. Company Projects Always Have Limitations Thus when I became the company management and was responsible for the creative team, I understood very much what those young creators in my company's story exploration committees were feeling. Although the rise of such emotions could never been thoroughly eradicated, I still hoped ot be able to create an environment for everyone to have as little of this type of emotions as possible. Thus I suggested a method: "4/5 work, 1/5 novel". In other words if a week has five work days, 4/5 of the working hours (4 days) would be used for company assigned work. The remaining 1/5 or 1 day is free time for everyone. This free time does not mean that no one would have to go to work, but on this day, you can create whatever you want to freely. The company assigned projects often have certain level of limitation, for example the subject that certain directors want to make, the genre that certain funding want to develop. The topics may even have to pass inspection or co-production; in addition film would always have many cost, actor, character and production restrictions, all of which on a certain level would give the story subject direction already. To me, such directions are already very wide ranged; but to the new generation of creators who still do not know how to navigate within, they may feel the pressure. Cash Prize To Stimulate New Ideas Thus this 1/5 time is for everyone to thoroughly shake off the chains of various limitation. They do not need to carry the burden of considering how to benefit the company, to fully develop the stories that they like. They do not need to think who would perform, whether they would pass inspection, whether the scenes are concentrated enough to save cost. They are purely writing fun stories, then turning them into novels to please themselves. Every three to four months or so, they would hand over their novels with around 10,000 to 15,000 words then share and discuss them. Because these creations from this 1/5 time is thoroughly personal and do not involve whether they are commercial or not, when everyone discuss them they are more interested and free to discuss them than the screenplay discussions at work. They purely evaluation based on whether the story is interesting or not. To make everyone even more interested, I even established a cash prize system. Every time the best work would be chosen then rewarded cash as encouragement. Of course, I understood that they are not after the cash but other people's recognition. Thus on this day every week everyone would actively study what subject they would want to write. Even before writing they first discuss their ideas with co-workers. I feel this is great, because what creators comes up with at home is often more egocentric. Instead discussions with other people would stimulate different ideas. Young Screen Writers' Words Gradually Mature The novels that everyone hand over all had their own style. I was the most touched to see the improvement of many young screen writers. I remembered in the first year when they first joined the company, their writing did not have any order. Some were not even sure what they wanted to say in the end. After several years, everyone's words gradually matured and I could see their improvement in grasping the topic. Some indeed were very decently written, I originally wanted to post them to share with everyone because that 1/5 work hour whether wasted or not could be shared even if they could not be made in films. Yet I thought, since they wrote them already, why not use them to compete in short novel contests? Yet most of these contests prohibit any work that has been published online. Thus I could only set them aside for now. One day after the contests I could share them with everyone. Things that are not made for the market are the purest and the sincerest. Although we cannot possibly make them everyday, I still hope to be able to make some time in life to do something so pleasant. - Pang Ho Cheung Ancestors from Panyu, born in Kwun Tong. TA KUNG PAO, FEBRUARY 5 2016, FILM AND TELEVISION MARKET TREND LOW PERFORMANCE BEFORE THE HIGH SEASON With the Year of the Monkey on the way, Lunar New Year films open this week. Last week was the eve of the high season, new release performance was rather low. The top five on the box office chart were all earlier releases. In first place was DIRTY GRANDPA with HK$ 4.53 million, over two weeks it made HK$ 7.68 million in a decent performance. Robert De Niro from THE INTERN's mature gentleman to the mischievous grandpa this time remained just as popular. Of course DIRTY could not compare to THE INTERN's HK$ 29.95 million box office take. The Francis Ng Chun Yu and Ronald Cheng Chung Kei starred, Vincent Kok Tak Siu directed comedy HOUSE OF WOLVES (NGOK YUN GUK) made HK$ 3.29 million in second place. It had obvious growth from its opening week box office, probably due to decent word of mouth; the Oscar favorite THE REVENANT made HK$ 2.74 million in third place, over four weeks it made HK$ 18.09 million; another Oscar hit THE BIG SHORT made HK$ 1.99 million in fourth place, over two weeks it made HK$ 4.31 million; the Christmas release IP MAN 3 made HK$ 1.86 million in fifth place, over six weeks it made HK$ 57.67 million in a show of endurance. As for new films, the highest grossing was SURVIVOR with HK$ 720,000 in eighth place; the Shu Qi and Eddie Peng Yu-Yan starred romance THE LAST WOMAN STANDING made HK$ 330,000 in fourteenth place; famous Japanese female director Namoi Kawase's AN made HK$ 199,000 in seventeenth place; opening early last week, the classic comedy ALL'S WELL ENDS WELL (GA YAU HEI SI) extended version made HK$ 186,000 in sixteenth place. This week even more cinemas will join the fray; another foreign film KILL THE MESSENGER made HK$ 147,000 in twentieth place; the Taiwan film GATAO made HK$ 26,000 in thirty fifth place; the Mainland romance LES AVENTURES D'ANTHONY made HK$ 21,000 in third seventh place. In the Mainland, the animated feature KUNG FU PANDA 3 made 337.66 million RMB in firth place. With advanced screenings it made 380.1 million RMB; STAR WARS THE FORCE AWAKENS made 51.06 million RMB in second place, over four weeks it made 798.52 million RMB; the Mainland animated film BOONIE BEARS III made 40.67 million RMB in third place, over three weeks it made 256.52 million RMB; THE WALK made 37.28 million RMB in fourth place, over two weeks it made 81.49 million RMB; Opening this week in Hong Kong, ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS: THE ROAD CHIP made 36.81 million RMB in fifth place. As for other new releases, the Chinese America science fiction action co-production LOST IN THE PACIFIC made 21.13 million RMB in eighth place. Mainland director Vincent Zhou Wen Wu Bei directed, Brandon Routh, Kitty Zhang Yuqi and Russell Wong starred. The Mainland romantic comedy FOR LOVE made 5.13 million RMB in fourteenth place; the Mainland animated film FRUITY ROBO THE GREAT ESCAPE made 3.12 million RMB in fifteenth place. Conceivably anyone with knowledge of European distribution knows that Europe buys rights in terms of language regions, for example the French region, the German region and the Italian region. The writer tries to classify Hong Kong film releases last year by language and comes to the following conclusion. 37 were Chinese (including Cantonese and Putonghua), 26% of the year's film releases with a box office take of HK$ 415.75 million or 21.9% of the year's total box office; among them 46 were Cantonese, 16.7% of all releases with a box office take of HK$ 331.32 million or 16.7%; 27 were Putonghua, 9.8% of total release with box office take of HK$ 84.42 million or 4.46% of the total box office. English was the strongest with 137 films, 49.8% of total release. Its box office take was HK$ 1,344,260,000 or 71% of the box office. 65 were in other languages, 23.6% of the total release. Their box office take was HK$ 129.45 million or 6.7%; 37 were in Japan, 13.4% of the total release. The box office take was HK$ 106.83 million , 5.65% of the total box office; 12 were in Korean, 4.3% of the total film release. Their box office take was HK$ 6.48 million, 4.36% of the total box office. More next week. - LAM KAM BO 3. TA KUNG PAO, FEBRUARY 4 2016, ASIAN FILMS THE MONKEY KING 2 IS INNOVATIVE In 2014 THE MONKEY KING (SAI YAU GEI ji DAI LAU TIN GUNG) was a box office hit, paving the way the live aciton 3D JOURNEY TO THE WEST films. Two years after Sun Wukong was crushed under the Five Finger Mountain for causing havoc in the Heavenly Palace, he finally ran into the Westward bound Tang Monk and began the four men master and disciples journey for the scriptures. Only, THE MONKEY KING 2 (SUEN NG HUNG SAM DA BAK GWUT JING) other than the director switched THE MONKEY KING's Bull Demon King Aaron Kwok Fu Sing to play Sun Wukong. The Tang Monk, Piggy and Sand Monk were all new characters, as they all performed THE MONKEY KING 2 together. - HUNG KWONG The JOURNEY TO THE WEST chapters that have been adapted into films seemed to have an interesting order. Aside from THE MONKEY KING's group scene, the monsters that could carry movies all seemed to be female demons -- Madame White bone, Princess Iron Fan, Spider Spirit and the sort. Those even more powerful demon kings, emperors with stronger backings all rarely had the chance to appear. Often, the female demons on the silver screen were more interesting in Tang Monk's viriginity. A silent film that was unearthed and screened once several months ago in Hong Kong, THE CAVE OF THE SILKEN WEB (1927), the Yin Mingzhu played Spider Spirit made a big deal out of marrying the Tang Monk instead of feasting upon him. Obviously, the writer and the director Dan Duyu stressed the "pillow" portion of this story. Gong Li Carries the Banner In today's latest THE MONKEY KING 2, the villain that carried the banner remained a female demon. The film's story was one that everyone was familiar with. On the journey for the scriptures the Tang Monk and his disciples ran into a thousand year old corpse fiend Madame White Bone. The White Bone Spirit wanted to eat the Tang Monk's flesh and turned into an old woman, a young girl to baffle the Tang Monk. Sun Wukong exposed her but the Tang Monk mistook Wukong for killing innocents. In anger he dismissed him and gave the White bone Spirit a chance......this film was the start of the journey but did not spend much time on how the four got together. The rather comedic Gao Village story was nowhere to be found. Piggy's addition was completed through a fight, without any room left for elaboration. Since the JOURNEY TO THE WEST story has been well known, going directly to the topic for a change was a rather innovative strategy. This film's new idea lay with the "thrice struck" White Bone Spirit. The most internationally renowned actor in the film Gong Li played White Bone Spirit might be the most tragic demon in the JOURNEY TO THE WEST adaptation history and added a lot of flesh and blood to the Corpse Fiend that Wu Cheng'en spent little time on. Her evil acts were due to her painful experience in life. She wanted to "eat the Tang Monk" in order to avoid reincarnation as she would live forever as a demon. Here, the writer director obviously weakened the effects of the Tang Monk's flesh. In the past the demons wanted to eat the Tang Monk not only for everlasting life but also for redemptation and immortality as they could speed up the elevation process from demon to fairy. (Of course, to those kings who have turned from fairies to dmeons, the Tang Monk's felsh was also very "nourishing".) Tang Monk Does Not Preach Why would they want to remain demons forever? The writer director told us that the reason was hatred. In the end truly enlightening the White Bone Spirit was not the powerful Sun Wukong. Such an adaptation put the Tang Monk in a very important position. He kept struggling with his eldest disciple Sun Wukong, the focus of which was how to handle demons and monsters. Should they kill mercilessly or enlighten them no matter the consequences? Other film adaptations and even the original treated the pendatic monk's preaching like a joke. Here it became a serious message, at least a cetain Buddhist flavored chicken soup for the soul. Thus, Sun Wukong, the Tang Monk and the White Bone Spirit's roles were evenly split, which was drastically different from past JOURNEY TO THE WEST films that centered on Sun Wukong. Aside from the selfless principles, THE MONKEY KING 2 actually had even more fight scenes. With computer animated special effects this was also very antural. In the original the chapter had more dramatic scenes and mainly battled wits. The film however was like the foreign film LORD OF THE RINGS and did not lack battle scenes. In the end no one would have any idea how many times the White Bone Spirit was struck. Actually this perhaps was a common problem for JOURNEY TO THE WEST film adaptations. No matter how powerful the demons were in the story, in film version they could evenly match with Sun Wukong who once fended off a hundred thousand heavenly soldiers. Otherwise it would not be intense and exciting enough. Yet if even a minor character like Madame White Bone could tear the world apart in her fight against the Great Heaven Uniting Saint, then how would the truly mighty monsters that would appear later would show up? This is a point that many are curious about. 4. TA KUNG PAO, FEBRUARY 4 2016, LIGHT SHADOW PATH THE HONG KONG FILM AWARDS Among the 35th Hong Kong Film Award nominations this year, PORT OF CALL (DAP HUET CHUM MUI) stood out the most with 13 nominations. Actually, last year's film releases were not strong. Although some said that last year's domestic subject films thrived, three out of the five Best Film nominees were still Mainland and Hong Kong co-productions. The difference was not much from before. The difference was that no crime film or literary drama were in the Best Film category. Two great directors Mabel Cheung Yuen Ting and Johnnie To Kei Fung's work (A TALE OF THREE CITIES (SAM SING GEI) and OFFICE (WA LAI SEUNG BAN JOOK)) were both neglected, which was also a minor surprise. The Best Film competition probably would be between PORT OF CALL and LITTLE BIG MASTER (NG GOR SIU HAI DIK HAU JEUNG). The former earlier won the Hong Kong Film Critic Society Best Picture and had rather strong industry insider word of mouth. LITTLE was detailed and touching, with almost HK$ 50 million box office performance as well voter would not overlook it. Too few viewers have seen THE TAKING OF TIGER MOUNTAIN. IP MAN 3's performance could not compare to the Best Film winning first film. TEN YEARS was too alternative to be a favorite. Best Director favorite probably would be TAKING's director Tsui Hark. First he has already won the Film Critic Society Best Director. Secondly the director award voting's main influence would come from the Hong Kong Film Directors' Guild (higher percentage). Tsui Hark had a good chance to win again. The second choice would be PORT OF CALL's director Philip Yung Chi Kowng. The Bst Actor comopetition would be the fiercest. Most newspapers described it as the three Great Heavenly Kings (Andy Lau Tak Wa, Aaron Kwok Fu Sing, Jacky Cheung Hok Yau) vs. Double Ka Fai (Tony Leung Ka Fai, Nick Cheung Ka Fai). Leung Ka Fai in THE TAKING OF TIGER MOUNTAIN actually did not resemble the lead. Only his acting was indeed outstanding, like several years ago when he received a Best Actor nomination for playing the father in BRUCE LEE, MY BROTHER. Yet this time he did not have much screen time and probably would only be tagging along. Cheung Ka Fai's performance in KEEPER OF DARKNESS (TOR DEI KUI MOR YUN) was ideal, but his character was not memorable. A victory would be difficult. HEAVEN IN THE DARK (UM SIK TIN TONG)'s Cheung Hok Yau would be in an even great disadvantage. Because the film in order to qualify only had a 5 show run in Hong Kong. He too would only tag along. Lau Tak Wa's farmer in LOVE AND LOST (SUT GOO) was higly difficult to play and his performance stood out. He had what it takes to compete with PORT OF CALL's Kwok Fu Sing. PORT has already won the Film Critic Society Best Film and already has attention. Kwok Fu Sing gave his all, with his co-star Michael Ning (Bak Ji)'s excellent acting he had an impression of an overall advantage. As for Best Actress, Karena Lam Ka Yun's HEAVEN IN THE DARK would have a tough time competing since it has not been released yet. OFFICE's Sylvia Chang (Cheung Ngai Ga) and A TALE OF THREE CITIES' Tang Wei gave high quality performances but neither film was a hit. Seemingly LITTLE BIG MASTER's Miriam Yeung Chin Wa would be ahead, but three years ago Chin Wa has already won Best Actress. No one knows whether voters would be affected. This award would be the hardest to predict. - TIN LIK [ In Production Now/Soon ] Can : Wong Pai Dau Wong Pai d. Moon is eldest brother and head of the family. The film begins with the celebration of his 7th anniversary wedding with Leng, which celebration he deserts, preferring instead the company of his mistress. He turns up at home with her later, forcing his wife (whom he calls 'hag') to leave the house in dismay. Although she is very devoted to her husband and tolerates him for all his misbehaviors, her tolerance stops short of accepting his mistress openly in the family home. So is an effeminate floral arranger and lecturer at an art school, who is good at cooking and enjoys women's hobbies. His second cousin Mo-seung comes to his house on that same evening, and entirely devours an elaborate gourmet banquet which So had intended as a gift for Leng on her otherwise disastrous wedding anniversary. From that day on, So and Mo-seung are constantly at loggerheads over trivial issues, insulting each other with vulgar metaphors during a mahjong game session, apparently irreconcilable.
