MISCELLANEOUS * (2016/02/03) The Aaron Kwok Fu Sing, Jessie Li (Chun Xia) and the Golden Horse Best Supporting Actor Michael Ning (Bak Ji) starred film PORT OF CALL (DAP HUET CHUM MUI) received 13 Hong Kong Film Award nominations to become the most nominated film. The film company this week will release PORT again with the over 2 hour long competition version, which will have even more in depth depictions of the character personalities. Golden Horse Best Actor Eddie Chan (Ai Dik)'s scene would also remain. * (2016/02/03) Yesterday Stephen Chow Sing Chi was scheduled to attend a fan meeting at a certain Xian shopping center for his new film MERMAID (MEI YUN YU). Many fans rushed from elsewhere to catch a glimpse of Sing Yeh, but the event yesterday due to weather and itinerary was cancelled. Fans who arrived early were upset and struggled with security. Fans were extremely upset. Some revealed online that the meeting was not cancelled at the last minute, but changed venue to a certain hotel. Fans were prohibited from entering. Because many came a long way for the event, some even flew to Xian, they were more upset that the event was cancelled. * (2016/02/03) Karena Lam Ka Yun and Jacky Cheung Hok Yau both are nominated for Hong Kong Film Awards. The film earlier was chosen to be the opening film of the 2016 Golden Horse Fantastic Film Festival. Their acting and chemistry are again recognized. Lam Ka Yun and Cheung Hok Yau reunited again for a Lunar New Year video to greet viewers. They appeared to be on the same page on camera, but during the shoot they had frequent bad takes as they kept improvising! Hok Yau even jokingly said "Sun Tai Fat Choi" (body gets rich) to add some New Year cheer. Ka Yun and Hok Yau worked together again after over a decade. The mother of two daughters said that experience has given her an even deeper understanding of acting. "Even with many argument scenes with Hok Yau, it was like a game of passing the ball. You pass it to me like this, how should I receive it? After I receive it how should I pass it back to him? The process was a lot of fun." How was this time different from before? Ka Yun said, "JULY RHAPSODY (NAM YUN SEI SUP) was my first movie. Because I was too nervous, I only focused on doing my part well. I made a lot of mistakes." Co-star Hok Yau also recognized Ka Yun's acting. He said, "I personally feel that Ka Yun's performance before was more on the spot, now she did a lot of preparation before taking her place. In the most memorable scene, the shot aimed at one side of her face as she delivered her lines. She was able to in the middle of her delivery naturally shed one drop of tear out of the camera side eye. She didn't on the other side! Her muscle control had to be great to be able to do that. If it wasn't coincidental, she definitely put in a lot of hard work." * (2016/02/03) The Lunar New Year film THE MONKEY KING 2 (SAI YAU GEI ji SUEN NG HUNG SAM DA BAK GWUT JING) held the premiere two nights ago. Aaron Kwok Fu Sing, Gong Li, Feng Shaofeng, Xiao Shenyang, Law Chung Him, Kelly Chen Wai Lam attended. Over 100 fans jammed into the venue. The actors traded compliments at the event. Sing Sing even praised Gong Li as the top Chinese female star and no one could compare to her performance as the White Bone Spirit. Gong Li also said that when she first learned that Sing Sing would star, she felt that the Pretty Monkey King has appeared. She also knew that she had to accept her challenge because Sing Sing was a great actor who recently won awards. She certainly had some pressure. She also said, "I really hate him. (in the film) without him I wouldn't have so much trouble. He kept getting in the way. However I am very honored to have worked with him." After the ceremony, Sing Sing was asked if he was afraid of insulting other female stars with his Gong Li compliment. He said that it was the truth that everyone recognized. After working with her he realized that she had quite a presence, no one would be more suitable to play this character. Very regrettably this time he was unable to play host and take Gong Li to dinner, because her work schedule was jam packed. He looked forward to having another chance to work together. Sing Sing this year with PORT OF CALL (DAP HUET CHUM MUI) was nominated for the Hong Kong Film Award Best Actor, which Chow Yun Fat jokingly asked everyone to yield to Jacky Cheung Hok Yau. Sing Sing said that at every award show, the winner would thank the jury. He felt normal and others could say whatever they want. He also said that he would work hard and learn from Sister Gong Li to win even more international awards. Sing Sing said, "Of course I am happy with the nomination, it's normal for people to want to win. However the award isn't the only thing, the most important is respect for the art and performing well in every film." Gong Li thanked Sing Sing for giving her a lot of encouragement during the shoot. She was a fan of Sing Sing's music, but they were too busy to have dinner together. Earlier they promoted separately. Speaking of Sing Sing's Hong Kong Film Award Best Actor nomination, she heard about it and felt that as an actor the nomination was passive. Thus she would not put much importance on that. She felt that the most important was the word of mouth, which was even more important than winning an award. During the Lunar New Year Gong Li will return home. As for Valentine's Day, she did not know yet whether she will spend it with her boyfriend. Kelly joked that in the film she only sat on the cloud and watched from afar. She got a raise this time in comparison to the first film. Would she like to keep making movies? She said that the most important was for her not to have to fight. Sitting pretty would be the best. Then she would not have to get hurt. Will she take her sons to watch this movie? Kelly said that she would have to watch it first and inspect it. However her sons definitely liked to watch special effects; she also said that during the shoot she only had to converse with air. This time she had on scene in which she conversed with Sing Sing, which was already great. * (2016/02/03) The Lunar New Year film FROM VEGAS TO MACAU 3 (DOH SING FUNG WON III) producer and director Wong Jing, Andrew Lau Wai Keung yesterday led Chow Yun Fat, Andy Lau Tak Wa, Jacky Cheung Hok Yau and Carina Lau Ka Ling to the Guangzhou press conference. The actors played a game for them to choose their character relationships anew . Ka Ling, Wa Jai and Hok Yau ganged up on Hok Yau. Ka Ling first said that she would team up with Wa Jai because Wa Jai was humorous and energetic. He was very responsible and really took care of people. Working with him would be the most practical. The only thing was that she was afraid she would be the envy of many female friends. As for rivals, Ka Ling would choose Fat Gor, Hok Yau for a companion. She said that her grudge with Fat Gor has already grown deep. Each time she was in love with him she did not end up well. She got Hok Yau to be her lover because Hok Yau already loved her very much from the middle of the previous film. Hok Yau joked that if he could choose again, he hoped that his love with Ka Ling would last 10,000 years. He would team up with Wa Jai. This time in the film Fat Gor escaped his grasp many times because Fat Gor had a very strong teammate Lau Tak Wa. Thus he would ask Wa Jai to help him to ensure his victory. Hok Yau also said that he did not have enough fun from working with Fat Gor this time. Next time he would like the chance to keep battling him. Wa Jai admitted that working with Hok Yau would give him a belly ache from laughing everyday. Fat Gor would always be his elder, role model. It was not easy for him to be fortunate enough to work with Fat Gor. Teh chance to battle wits and courage with Fat Gor would be even rarer. He hoped to have a chance to truly play "rivals" with Fat Gor. He of course chose Ka Ling for a companion because she was the only one in the film. Wa Jai joked that originally he wanted to choose Fat Gor, but he was afraid that Fat Soh would hit him. Fat Gor said that he hoped to team with Hok Yau, as he felt that they knew what the other was thinking; Wa Jai would be his rival. He has teamed with him since GOD OF GAMBLERS (DOH SING) and they have worked together too many times. He was already bored. He said, "Everyone know how much he loves me. Even as a rival, he probably would be reluctant to do anything to me. I would be in love with Ka Ling. After several times it still isn't enough. Earlier I broke her heart. If I get another chance, I would be with her properly." In addition, Hok Yau's film song FREEZE FRAME music video has been officially released. The music video had a lot of footage from the love triangle in the film between him, Ka Ling and Fat Gor. * (2016/02/02) Stephen Chow Sing Chi led the MERMAID (MEI YUN YU) actors Deng Chao, Show Lo (Law Chi Cheung, Piggy) and Jelly Lin Yun on their promotional tour. Sing Yeh took special care of Lin Yun and put her on a strict diet. Once Lin Yun wanted to have pork knuckle and Sing Yeh had to stop her. He explained that he was afraid the more Lin Yun ate the bigger her face would become, as he has never seen someone with such a large face. Piggy played from JOURNEY TO THE WEST: CONQUERING THE DEMONS (SAI YAU GONG MOR PIN)'s lonely prince to MERMAID's Octopus. His biggest wish was that next time he could play a normal person. He also revealed that in both JOURNEY and MERMAID he worked with Aunt Hengdian. When they ran into each other she sent him a text message to make her feelings known! Deng Chao and Piggy challenged Sing Yeh's classic film lines. They both performed the "10,000 Years" speech; Deng Chao cried while Piggy gave a kiss; Sing Yeh said that they both were still a little off from his and they had to try again. * (2016/02/02) Kelly Chen Wai Lam two days ago attended the film THE MONKEY KING 2 (SAI YAU GEI ji SUEN NG HUNG SAM DA BAK GWUT JING) press conference. On the way to Guangzhou she asked the driver to pull over and signed autographs on four boxes of her upcoming record release. Kelly launched her "motor hand" and spent half a hour to sign all of the 300 or 400 records. Not only did the pen run out of ink, her hand went limp and her legs were numb from standing. Kelly explained, because some Mainland fans were unable to attend her Hong Kong autograph session, she contacted her assistants to sign autographs at a location. Kelly in order to keep from affecting the film promotion signed autographs halfway! She hoped that the record company will soon release the Mainland version of the record and hold Mainland autograph sessions. Aaron Kwok Fu Sing two days ago attended THE MONKEY KING 2 Guangzhou premiere with Gong Li and Chen Wai Lam. Sing Sing and Gong Li both revealed that when they watched the film they succumbed to tears. Gong Li said, "Two parts were very touching for me. You can truly sense that my White Bone Spirit is a little bad." Sing Sing stated that the film's final 10 minutes made him lose his composure. "The character truly wasn't easy to play, and the process was very tough and very stressful. The film took 4 months to make, when I went to see it I was very nervous." Meanwhile for Kwok Fu Sing's other film THE ETERNAL WAVE, director Chung Siu Hung was strict as he asked him to jump from the third to the second floor. Sing Sing was an "obedient actor" and insisted against using a double. He injured his left knee and aggravated an old wound. He planned to have surgery in March, a complete recovery could take half a year as his summer Hong Kong Coliseum concert might be affected. Playing the Goddess of Mercy, Kelly starred in two JOURNEY TO THE WEST films. She said, "In both films, the Goddess of Mercy's influence was Sun Wukong was enormous. She was a life coach and a psychiatrist." When the host asked her for an early Lunar New Year greeting, she recited poetry in Cantonese. It was accidentally translated as "You would get pregnant from watching THE MONKEY KING 2!" Reporters joked that she was a "child granting Goddess of Mercy. * (2016/02/02) Director Clifton Ko Chi Sum directed ALL'S WELL ENDS WELL (GA YAU HEI SI) 24 years ago, which still felt like yesterday for him. He revealed that back then he spent HK$ 3 million to lure Leslie Cheung Kwok Wing into a "comeback". Gor Gor even graciously said that he would only pocket 2.95 million. After that he was afraid that Gor Gor would learn that Stephen Chow Sing Chi was paid HK$ 8 million. In the end on the day of the production wrap because Chow Sing Chi had his mind of having abalone, Gor Gor blasted, "The 8 million one still hasn't taken his place yet." Cheung Kwok Wing back then announced his retirement from show business and immigrated to Canada, but he could not withstand Ko Chi Sum's convincing as he returned to make ALL'S. The film set an almost HK$ 50 million box office record. The film recently released an extended version for a share of the Year of the Monkey Lunar New Year film slot. Reportedly Gor Gor's salary was lower than Chow Sing Chi's by more than a half. "Originally it was (Raymond) Wong Pak Ming and (George) Lam Chi Cheung with Gor Gor, but Lam Chi Cheung resigned for family reason. Finally Wong Pak Ming spent 8 million for Chow Sing Chi to take over. He told me to convince Gor Gor for less than 3 million. Gor Gor not only agreed but also told him that he would only take 2.95 million. The remaining 50,000 was a show of respect for you. When I found out how far apart the two superstars' salaries were, I was afraid that Gor Gor would act up. At work I was worried that I wouldn't hear the end of it. Yet I never did until the day of the production wrap when Chow Sing Chi did not take his part because he was having abalone. Gor Gor finally said, "'The 8 million one still hasn't taken his place.'" Back then for the Korean market, Gor Gor made a gun fight scene that was never seen in Hong Kong until the extended version. Director Ko said, "I watched this scene for the first time several days ago myself. Back then the action director shot it. Because of the shocking 'film robbery case' I was editing the film with 3 police officers by my side. Those 3 were probably ALL'S first viewers. They laughed out loud as they watched." Director Ko also praised Gor Gor's performance for being worth more than 2.95 million. "That day I went to the movies to watch the extended version, the chemical reaction between Gor Gor and (Teresa) Mo Shun Kwan made the audience laugh non stop. The reaction was better than back then." The film's producer Wong Pak Ming also praised Gor Gor as the soul of the production. "I remember Cheung Man Yuk had an Aphrodite A missile look. When she got to the set she actually refused to wear the costume. As everyone was frantic, Gor Gor told me, 'Let me take care of it!' Finally he settled the matter. No one could say anything bad about Gor Gor, he was both generous and friendly." * (2016/02/02) The Donnie Yen Chi Tan starred IP MAN 3 entered its sixth week in release. Its Hong Kong cumulative box office has reached HK$ 57 million to become the top 2015 Hong Kong film and at the same time moved into 4th place among the highest grossing Hong Kong films. The film opened for ten days in the U.S. and has already reached US$ 1.6 million. At the same time the film was the highest grossing Chinese film in Malaysia box office history. As for IP 3's 8 Hong Kong Film Award nominations, producers and executive producer Raymond Wong Pak Ming naturally was happy but regretted that Yen Chi Tan was not nominated for Best Actor. "Chi Tan's Master Ip image is well known, as he become the 'irreplaceable Ip Man'." Earlier Chi Tan and boxing champion Mike Tyson spoke with the press in the U.S. They even demonstrated stage fighting. The video received over 20 million views. * (2016/02/02) The Lunar New Year film FROM VEGAS TO MACAU 3 (DOH SING FUNG WON III) two nights ago held a premiere in Wanchai. The five leads appeared. Chow Yun Fat, Andy Lau Tak Wa, Jacky Cheung Hok Yau, Nick Cheung Ka Fai, and Carina Lau Ka Ling dropped funny bombs all over. Three Hong Kong Film Award Best Actor nominees Hok Yau, Ka Fai and Wa Jai were present, when talking about the award no one was willing to give up. Fat Gor said that he was very happy that before the film was even released, it already had three Best Actor nominees Lau Tak Wa, Cheung Hok Yau and Cheung Ka Fai. Fat Gor jokingly asked Ka Fai to let his "older brother" win because Hok Yau has never won the Hong Kong Film Award Best Actor. Hok Yau said that he actually has won in India with JULY RHAPSODY (NAM YUN SEI SUP) and experienced that joy. Yet at the time the Indian economy was poor, it only notified him of his victory. Ka Fai joked that that award might be curry flavored. Fat Gor said that winning a Best Actor award in India was amazing. Ka Ling also helped with support for Hok Yau. She said that if she and Fat Gor were on the jury, they would give it to Hok Yau for sure because he made movies too infrequently. Wa Jai and Ka Fai were asked to give up the award to Hok Yau, but Wa Jai joked, "I haven't won it yet, how do I give it up?" Fat Gor also said that he has always had a dream of working on a movie with Stephen Chow Sing Chi, Cheung Ka Fai and Lau Tak Wa. "Yes, four generations all together. (God of Gamblers, Saint of Gamblers, Knight of Gamblers)" He also said that as long as Sing Jai was willing it would work. Ka Fai joked that would be where the difficulty lay. Hok Yau also said, "If not, ALL'S WELL ENDS WELL (GA YAU HEI SI) extended version wouldn't be released now!" Fat Gor joked, "Wow! (Raymond) Wong Pak Ming as a director! He really liked to direct and be the star, when he directed he couldn't be the star! Unless he was like Ka Fai, who could both direct and act. Just let someone else win." Ka Fai said that he did it because it was his interest. As for box office expectation, Ka Fai hoped that it would make 2 billion. Were they confident about beating Chow Sing Chi's MERMAID (MEI YUN YU)? Ka Fai joked that anyone who would not watch the film would have a year of bad luck; Fat Gor then repeated what he said. "Everyone fasten your seat belts, to prepare for the box office take off. Our film is very happy, after watching you will be healthier, walk faster, make more money, if you want good luck watch us!" Chow Yun Fat joked, "If Cheung Ka Fai jumps into the sea it will have a chance at 2 billion, there is a sea in the back!" Speaking of online boycott of the film, Hok Yau asked why. Reporters said that it was because of director Wong Jing's comments. Hok Yau joked, "Brother Jing has nothing to do with this movie." Fat Gor also joked that Wong Jing only slept on the set. "But when he wakes up he knows where the production is at. (Do you want to make a 4th one?) I want to make the 400th one, if I can!" Lau Ka Ling said to Cheung Ka Fai, with whom she has never worked alone with, "You are a new actor, I don't really know you." The crowd laughed. Then she was jealous of Hok Yau. "I have never seen a lead actor who has more costume changes than the lead actress!" Hok Yau replied, "Because Ka Ling in the film doesn't wear much clothes!" As for her confidence in the new film's box office, she said, "If it reaches 2 billion, I would immediately make a next one!" When campaigning for Hok Yau to win the Best Actor, she said, "Hok Yau for which film are you nominated? Who is the other Best Actor nominee?" Chow Yun Fat joked, "Sister Ka Ling, have you been very busy with your business?" Brother Jing felt that he could not do anything about the online boycott of the film. Was he worried about the film's Hong Kong box office/ He said, "The Hong Kong box office actually is 1/25 of the Mainland's, would you say I should worry?" He even said that last year even more people said that they would not watch FROM VEGAS TO MACAU 2 (DOH SING FUNG WON II). In the end it came in first at the box office. * (2016/02/01) Teresa Mo Shun Kwan and Raymond Wong Pak Ming earlier attended the audience appreciation event for their classic Lunar New Year film ALL'S WELL ENDS WELL (GA YAU HEI SI)'s extended version. Although the film has been shown on television for years, the extended version was still popular with viewers at the movies. Many viewers who knew about ALL'S from the re-runs spent money to watch it on the big screens, much to the duo's surprise. Mo Shun Kwan said that she has not been to a cinema for an audience appreciation event in a long time. Her feeling was rather mixed from seeing a group of viewers who supported a 24 year old film. When asked who has seen the film more than ten times, almost all of the audience raised their hands. Won Pak Ming admitted that he was rather sentimental about ALL'S being released again. He revealed that back then robbers tried to rob the film at gunpoint. Luckily they failed and this classic was able to return to big screen. The gun fight scene in the film was added according to Korea's request. Only because the popularity of A BETTER TOMORROW (YING HUNG BOON SIK)'s style, the three brothers' rescue of Sandra Ng Kwan Yu was added and shown in the extended version. Wong Pak Ming revealed that Mo Shun Kwan and Leslie Cheung Kwok Wing came up with one of the mahjong scene together. Mo Shun Kwan said, "Gor Gor and I came up with that mahjong scene, and the idea even happened in real life. As for who threw four tiles into the toilet, I can't say, haha." Speaking of IP MAN 3's performance, Wong Pak Ming revealed that it has already passed HK$ 56 million and in fifth place in Hong Kong box office record. He hoped that the film will reach HK$ 60 million. * (2016/02/01) Jeana Ho Pui Yu, Catherine Chau Ka Yi, Akina Fong Kin Yee two nights ago attended the film THE MENU (DOH FOR SUN MUN SIN)'s wrap banquet. Jeana pointed out that she did not have to be sexy for the new film. "I play a reporter in training. Earlier when the temperature dropped to two or three degrees, I had to work on location for over ten hours. I was so cold that I couldn't bend my knees. I had to soak in hot water for two hours before I gradually regain feelings in them." Chau Ka Yi also said that her legs suffered. "Earlier I was running in a scene, which took nine hours to shoot. Maybe I wasn't wearing the right shoes. The next day it still hurt to walk." * (2016/02/01) Stephen Chow Sing Chi's film MERMAID (MEI YUN YU) yesterday held a Beijing press conference. Sing Yeh attended as the latest "KING OF COMEDY training class" president led Deng Chao, Show Lo (Law Chi Cheung), Kitty Zhang Yuqi, Jelly Lin Yun and Lee Sheung Ching in attendance. At the press conference, Sing Yeh dressed like a mermaid and danced hip hop. He even asked the audience, "Don't I look handsome? Doesn't my hat look good?" Deng Chao said that his character in the film had a past that he did not want to recall. Sing Yeh said, "Deng Chao whether in drama or comedy has very high abilities. His character actually is a child, but in this world he has to pretend to be an adult. He becomes a very invincible character who is only out for himself. He put mustache on his face, which isn't him at all." Law Chi Cheung said that last time when he worked with Sing Yeh on JOURNEY TO THE WEST: CONQUERING THE DEMONS (SAI YAU GONG MOR PIN), he sat in his performance from the beginning to the end; this time in MERMAID he finally did not have to sit, but he did not have a moment of peace either. He said, "This time I am not playing a human, a character that is hardest to play since my career started. It is an octopus!" He even asked to play a normal person next time without any kidney problem. Sing Yeh joked, "Why don't you play an octopus with weak kidneys. How would you walk?" Lin Yun said that in the film the mermaid's mode of transportation was a skateboard. Walking with a fish tail was very slow so she used a skateboard. The director gave her skateboarding lessons. During the shoot her legs were tied to the skateboard. At the event, Tsui Hark made a surprise appearance and revealed that he made a special appearance in MERMAID. Tsui Hark even announced that the Sing Yeh produced, Tsui Hark directed JOURNEY TO THE WEST 2 will soon be released. As for the reason for the collaboration, Sing Yeh nonsensically said, "Tsui Hark's acting is great. Actually directors know how to act the best. I feel that one is Director Tsui, the other is me, nothing more has to be said about our acting." Tsui Hark recalled, "Many years ago, we talked about working together for many years. However he was too busy. I waited for him and finally I made it. I stood on the set but didn't dare to move. Zhang Yuqi and Deng Chao didn't dare to move either. We moved when we heard something, we had to watch the director." * (2016/01/31) Directors Chow Kwun Wai, Ng Ka Leung and Yau Hok Sau yesterday attended the film TEN YEARS' event at Mongkok. A viewer asked about the direction of Hong Kong in the next ten years, Chow Kwun Wai stated that it will decline. "Many actors read the script and immediately turned it down, some actors after the shoot asked me if they would be in trouble. I felt it was very absurd." He said that TEN YEARS starting next month will be screened at various schools. The film received the Hong Kong Film Award Best Film nomination. Yau Hok Sau said, "Although it had nothing to do with me, I was very touched. As Lee Kwon Cheung said, let the drug spread out." * (2016/01/31) The Stephen Chow Sing Chi produced, directed, and written film MERMAID (MEI YUN YU) will open in February. The film's two leads Show Lo (Law Chi Cheung) and Jelly Lin Yun appeared on the Cable high definition entertainment station program Film Montage with Sing Yeh. Speaking of Sing Yeh choosing Lin Yun out of 120,000 candidates to play the mermaid, she admitted that she had pressure because Sing Yeh was a very serious director. He would personally demonstrate the scene. The first time working with him she had a lot of pressure, but she believed that pressure was motivation. Why would Sing Yeh choose Lin Yun? He felt that she was an unique girl, with an innocent quality that completely unlike human. She was like a wild animal and was very suitable for this character. Sing Yeh pointed out that now it is very hard to make a movie, the hardest is to come up with a good script. Each time he hoped to add in different creativity, to give the audience something fresh. However the audience was very highly demanding. They have seen even better films, to please them had certain difficulty. When would Sing Yeh return to the screen? He said, "I don't know! It's possible, with the right role I would consider it." Playing the octopus in the film, Piggy was accused of taking Sing Yeh's favorite character. He joked that only he knew the pain. Everyday he had to get up early for make up. In the cold winter he was in the water for the production for a long duration, which was also very tough. Even when the director yelled cut he would not leave the water, because when he returned to the water he would feel even colder. Piggy remembered that one day he worked in water with an older woman who had a crush on him in the film. He suddenly felt warmth around him. Actually she went in the water. He was very surprised. * (2016/01/30) Best Actor Chow Yun Fat earlier appeared in Chengdu, Sichuan with Chris Lee Yuchun, director Andrew Lau Wai Keung and others for the Lunar New Year FROM VEGAS TO MACAU 3 (DOH SING FUNG WON III) press conference. From Chengdu, Lee Yuchun of course had to play host. She not only taught Chow Yun Fat the Sichuan dialect to greet viewers but even prepared the local Lunar New Year "Lai Tang Yuan" to give him a taste of Chengdu. The "Lai Tang Yuan" that Lee Yuchun prepared had dice designs on them, which made Chow Yun Fat rather happy. After he tried some he had nothing but praise. Director Lau Wai Keung even joked, "This is the best Tang Yuan that I have ever had!" The always friendly Chow Yun Fat even fed the female host and the fans went into an uproar, which filled the venue with Spring Festival atmosphere. Will Chow Yun Fat continue his promotional tour on Lunar New Year's Day? He joked, "I will choose to run in the hills, where few people will be and very quiet. I can even train my body." Chow Yun Fat's "God of Gamblers" film series has been very memorable and later span off to CON MAN (DOH HUP) and ALL FOR THE WINNER (DOH SING) film series. Yet speaking of "Saint of Gamblers" Stephen Chow Sing Chi's Lunar New Year film MERMAID as a box office rival to FROM 3, Chow Yun Fat said that he did not mind. On a rare reunion with Nick Cheung Ka Fai he said, "Having the same release date with a Chow Sing Chi film is a good thing. I have always had a dream of bringing Chow Sing Chi and Cheung Ka Fai together for a movie." Yet he admitted that this idea would be rather difficult. "Now Chow Sing Chi only directs and won't act, getting him is very hard. I can only leave it with Director Lau Wai Keung to see if he has even pull to get him." * (2016/01/30) National Art Entertainment Culture Group chief Checkley Sin Kwok Lam yesterday attended a micro film event. He denied recent report that he gave full support to Rachel Chau Ka Lei and neglected Rose Chan Ka Wun and explained the reason that Ka Lei will star in five micro films. "Because she has little performance experience. Ka Wun already has seven years of film experience, she has more training than Chau Ka Lei. I don't sign a lot of poeple like other companies, I just sign a few. I hope everyone can be honed." He also said that Ka Wun will give guidance to Ka Lei on the set. Gordon Lam Ka Tung said that his film TRIVISA (SHU DAI JIU FUNG) was selected for the Berlin Film Festival. Due to work he might not be able to attend. He hoped to be able to perform even more on camera in the upcoming year. * (2016/01/30) The Year of the Monkey Lunar New Year epic THE MONKEY KING 2 (SAI YAU GEI ji SUEN NG HUNG SAM DA BAK GWUT JING) in order to bring about the fantasy world of JOURNEY TO THE WEST had 98% of its shots undergone the special effect treatment. The total number of special effect shots reached 2,300. No wonder the film's realistic effects could rival Hollywood's. Sing Sing in the film fought from a small village to an ancient city to a snowy land, repeatedly going after Gong Li who wanted to harm the Tang Monk (Feng Shaofeng). Under action director Sammo Hung Kam Bo's thoughtful designs and a lot of computer special effect shots, the action scenes were extremely entertaining. The White Bone Spirit transformed into half a giant skeleton to battle Wukong left many breathless. Gong Li in the film's black and white White Bone Spirit costume with her red eyes and black and white scales that were barely visible added to her mystery. In order to gain the Tang Monk's trust, She turned into an old lady. Not only were the make up and costume so convincing that no one recognized Gong Li, but also her sorrowful eyes as she spoke of her bitter life as one of the unlucky ones made her acting convincing as well! Sing Sing held his own. Under the team's special design half human, half monkey special effect look and through a lot of facial expressions he expressed Wukong's emotional world as the Tang Monk misunderstood him and as he negotiated with the White Bone Spirit. Sing Sing was able to show off his acting. Law Chung Him played the all blue, muscular Sand Monk. In the film he, Wukong and the Xiao Shenyang played Piggy fought. Xiao Shenyang revealed that his lines displayed Piggy's lustful character. In order for a sexy demon he still boastfully pretended to be extraordinary to bring joy to the film and the audience in the New Year! * (2016/01/30) The 35th Hong Kong Film Award will take place on April 3rd. The event yesterday announced its nominations. PORT OF CALL (DAP HUET CHUM MUI) after its Golden Horse Award and Hong Kong Film Critic Society victories again received 13 nominations to be the most nominated film. Aaron Kwok Fu Sing will compete for Best Actor again Nick Cheung Ka Fai, Tony Leung Ka Fai, Andy Lau Tak Wa, and Jacky Cheung Hok Yau. Sing Sing was happy for director Philip Yung Chi Kwong and also thanked the voters for their recognition of his character. Best Actress nominees included Karena Lam Ka Yun, Jessie Li (Chun Xia), Tang Wei, Sylvia Chang (Cheung Ngai Ga) and Miriam Yeung Chin Wa. LOVE AND LOST (SUT GOO)'s Best Actor nominee Wa Jai thanked everyone for their love. He said, "When I got the script, I too question myself if I had the ability to play this character well. I put a lot of effort into it. I am truly very happy to be able to receive everyone's recognition!" Leung Ka Fai was very happy about his film THE TAKING OF TIGER MOUNTAIN's 11 nominations. He hoped that director Tsui Hark and other nominees would win, but he did not dare to think that for himself. Instead he picked Sing Sing for Best Actor. The HEAVEN IN THE DARK nominee Cheung Hok Yau said, "I am very happy to see so many close friends being nominated, whether I win or not I am already happy to be able to attend and see my friends. I hope Lam Ka Yun can win again after the Golden Horse Award, but the lack of a Best New Director nomination for director Yuen Kim Wai is a little regrettable." Cheung Ka Fai with KEEPER OF DARKNESS was nominated for Best Actor. He said that he was even more excited about the film receiving five nominations and thanked his team! KEEPER's Best Supporting Actor nominee Louis Cheung Ka Fai and Best New Performer nominee Sisly Choi Sze Bui both said that they were happy. Ah Chung said, "It's already a victory. I have learned a lot from the production process. 20 years ago I would never imagine that I would be nominated for a Hong Kong Film award with Bak Ji (Michael Ning)." Sze Bui said that when she heard about her Best New Performer nomination she shivered and thanked Cheung Ka Fai for giving her a chance. HEAVEN IN THE DARKNESS' Best Actress nominee Lam Ka Yun was not only happy but also thanked the film investors. Because this was not a commercial film, it might not be able to make a lot of money. She also thanked Cheung Hok Yau for his trust and support of the team and congratulated him on his Best Actor nomination. Thirdly she thanked director Yuen Kim Wai. LITTLE YOUNG MASTER's Best Actress nominee Yeung Chin Wa repeatedly said, "Very happy". "I am very honored and grateful! I am the happiest about the numerous nominations for the film, I am happy for them!" After ten years away from film Anna Ng Yuen Yi said that she was both happy and grateful. She could finally answer to herself and her family. Director Adrian Kwan Shun Fai was also grateful. Michael Ning (Bak Ji) received Best Supporting Actor and Best New Performer nominations and was very excited, but he was even happier about the film's 13 nominations because this film was the effort of many people. He said, "I am already very happy with just the nomination, I grew up watching the Hong Kong Film Awards. I never imagined that I would take part." Jessie Li (Chun Xia) received Best Actress and Best New Performer nominations. She said that she was very happy and the nominations made her believe that she was a passable film worker. In addition, SHE REMEMBERS, HE FORGETS (NA YUT TIN NGOR MOON WUI FEI)'s Best New Performer Cecilia So Lai Shan said that she was very happy, very lucky to be able to be nominated with amazing nominees. Janice Man Wing Shan with HELIOS (CHET DOH) was nominated for Best Supporting Actress. She was very excited to receive the news in Taiwan. Her entire family all screamed together. Hong Kong Film Award Association president Derek Yee Tung Sing, Sean Lau Ching and Ivana Wong Yuen Chi yesterday attended the nomination press conference. Ching Wan this year was not nominated. He joked that he was very relaxed. "This year they asked me to help as a host, I have no reason to turn them down. However everyone knows how well I talk." Ching Wan joked that he has already sat in the audience for many years, so he believed that this time will be rather challenging. However he has not asked his more expressive buddies for advice because he did not know what to ask. As for his picks for Best Actor and Best Actress, he stated, "This year is very strong, it's hard to determine." Ivana felt very honored to be able to announce the nominations with her idol Ching Wan, which she saw as the first step toward working with him. However she did not dare to volunteer to host with him because she was too frightened and lacked confidence. She joked, "In order for the Hong Kong Film Award to continue on gloriously, I would try not to touch the host world." The film will open in Malaysia and Singapore during the Lunar New Year. For his "first time" Ah Jat called in favors. Friend Fiona Sit Hoi Kei helped out without another word. In the film she wore Chinese dress and flight attendant uniform. For her effort Ah Jat of course had to pay her back. "She agreed to come and guest star, but forced me to say that her acting was funnier than mine. I of course had to, haha! Her comedic cells indeed are better than mine." Speaking of the film opening during the Lunar New Year in Malaysia and Singapore first and facing MERMAID, FROM VEGAS TO MACAU 3, Ah Jat said, "If I don't have the Singapore and Malaysia market, I would have 'bought it' long ago. So I have confidence in myself. Earlier I even lived there for half a year to write the script, as I hope to make the domestic connection!" To Man Chak's KING OF MAHJONG last year was a big hit in Singapore and Malaysia. Thus he had many fans there. Earlier he was invited to the Tunku Abdul Rahman University College in Kuala Lumpur to attend a film forum. Many university students showed their support. The venue was not only packed but students lined up for photos with Ah Jat afterward. * (2016/01/29) Artist Charmaine Li Sze Yan's husband Ricky Fan Chun Fung recently became the film FOOLING AROUND JIANGHU (GONG WU HEI KET)'s producer. Sze Yan fully supported her husband and took time to guest star in a scene. She said, "Actually aside from the leads, many actors guest starred. This time I played a cashier girl. My co-stars were (Jacky) Cai Jie and Choi Hong Yik (Babyjohn). Babyjohn and I were a little ambiguous." Although it was just one scene, it still took several hours. As a first time guest star, did she "volunteer to help" her husband? She said, "Of course not, I had a salary! However before the shoot I always visited the set to keep him company, to support him. That was truly volunteered help!" * (2016/01/29) The Lunar New Year film FROM VEGAS TO MACAU 3 (DOH SING FUNG WON 3) will be released on February 6th. Aside from Chow Yun Fat, Andy Lau Tak Wa, Jacky Cheung Hok Yau, Nick Cheung Ka Fai, Carina Lau Ka Ling and Chris Lee Yuchun, the film also secretly invited Korean star PSY to transform into the "Poker King" to battle with Fat Gor! Earlier Fat Gor was a guest presenter at the MAMA Asian Music Award and danced with PSY. This time PSY appeared as a special guest star. The production was very smooth and only took one day's time to complete. PSY on the set was a source of joy, often having fun with his idol Fat Gor. Everyone on and off camera like them both. Hok Yau even admitted, "Working with Fat Gor I can learn a lot about living a healthy life, it's like have a treasure on the set!" A group of star friends often visited the set, one of them was Jet Li (Lee Nin Kit) who made a surprise appearance to cheer on everyone. He even sat still for for Fat Gor's expertise of taking a selfie. Liza Wang Ming Chuen also attentively visited her husband Law Kar Ying on the set. In addition, the film has the love triangle between Lau Ka Ling, Cheung Hok Yau and Chow Yun Fat, as well as a lot of action scenes. Fat Gor's "God of Gamblers" classic chocolate scenes will also return to the screen in order to bring a rich Lunar New Year to the audience. "God of Gamblers" Chow Yun Fat and "Song God" Cheung Hok Yau in FROM VEGAS TO MACAU 3 reunite, 28 years ago their 1998 film THE EIGHTH HAPPINESS (BAK SING BO HEI). In a ping pong battle in the film, Chow Yun Fat and Hok Yau battled in acting and comedy. With messy hair, tee shirt, shorts and a long coat, Chow Yun Fat's "Ken" looked hilarious. Through his eyes and excellent acting he dominated Hok Yau. Chow Yun Fat with his line, "I am Cheung Mo Gei, I have to eradicate a bad guy like you to avenge my god father the Golden Mane Lion King." Hok Yau appeared with long curly hair in a mild mannered look. Hok Yau returned Chow Yun Fat's dominating acting with his cool acting and lines. Chow Yun Fat served to Hok Yau, Hok Yau finally used a 360 degree mid air slam. In the end Hok yau won. Chow Yun Fat "whined". "I am not playing anymore, you don't let me win!" He pretended to be mad, threw down his paddle and left. Hok Yau was happy to work with Chow Yun Fat again after so many years. Speaking of Chow Yun Fat's humorous ways on and off camera, Hok Yau said, "Actually I want to be funny with everyone, but my character is set up like this." * (2016/01/29) Alex Fong Lik Sun yesterday attended a Red Cross event as a honorary ambassador to honor student volunteers. Siu Fong's film ANNIVERSARY (GEI LIM YUT) performed well at the box office. Earlier the production team mentioned celebrating with a trip to Switzerland, but so far it has not come to fruition. He pointed out that nothing came of it, perhaps they would wait until better performance. So far the box office has reached HK$ 19 million, with Macau it should be over HK$ 20 million. The film will continue to run until Valentine's Day. Siu Fong even revealed that he has already booked a show for a fan gathering to watch the film again with over 100 fans and pump up the box office. The booking made over HK$ 10,000. * (2016/01/28) The Wong Kar Wai produced, Tony Leung Chiu Wai starred film FERRYMAN (BAN DOH YUN) is still in production. According to the Mainland media photos, goddess Michelle Chen also guest starred. She was very happy to be able to work with her idol Wai Jai and did not skim on her effort. In the film she had to dress like Wonder Woman. Although in the cold she had a double to test her mark, she still paid close attention. When she was in the shoot, wind blew up her cape but she had no complaint. During her break she even gave a handbag to director Wong Kar Wai and chatted with him. Wong Kar Wai gladly accepted it. * (2016/01/28) Korean star Clara yesterday with Louis Koo Tin Lok, Francis Ng Chun Yu and Charmaine Sheh Si Man worked on the film LINE WALKER (SI TOH HUNG JEH) in Studio City Macau. Clara gave Goo Jai a surprise attack in the film. During the shoot, Clara personally performed her own stunts. After listening to action director Chin Kar Lok's directions, she flew onto a table then applied leg scissors on her opponents. Unfortunately Goo Jai did not have the chance to enjoy the "benefit" this time because his double did his stunts for him. Before the official shoot, Clara stretched to warm up. Clara said that she was very excited about the shoot. Claiming to enjoy making action films, she had a little difficulty with the first day of stunts but luckily she had two days of training before. Clara also revealed that earlier she and Goo Jai had a big fight scene. She even had to strangle him with a rope. She said that she was the most concerned about injuring Goo Jai's handsome face. Clara felt that her sexy costume was very cool. Full of power and strength, her character was very interesting. How did Goo Jai feel about Clara's abilities? Goo Jai boasted that he was "stiff" enough. He joked, "She trained for two days for the fight scene. Two days ago she and I fought for a day. She used wires to strangle me, and in the end the wire snapped. Luckily my neck was very stiff! Of course that wire was just a prop, that's why it snapped." Speaking of the mosquito spread Zika virus in South America, Goo Jai who will later shoot on location in Brazil was worried. He joked, "I definitely have to have mosquito repellent. With all the mosquitoes there, I would have to drink the whole bottle." Ng Chun Yu played the slots for Lunar New Year wealth, Goo Jai said that he never gambled. He will spend the Lunar New Year in Hong Kong as usual. Because he was the oldest son and grandson, he will have a lot of customs and traditions to perform at home. He will not resume work until the Lunar 6th or 7th. Ng Chun Yu and Sheh Si Man in the film played superior and subordinate, so they had the most scenes together. Would Chun Yu have a lot of action scene? He joked, "Young dramatic actors like me have to focus on romantic scenes, but this type of action scenes won't be too hard. (Will you have to go to Brazil for the location shoot?) No, with so many Samba ladies there I am afraid I may have a nosebleed. If we stay there longer I would want to go, but taking an over 20 hour flight there for an one day shoot would be worse than going on vacation." Chun Yu also praised Sheh Si Man for getting into shape as soon as she returned to work. He also said that he was a picky actor and that Sheh Si Man was "rather unlucky" to run into him at work. Sheh Si Man earlier worked on a complex scene and had her first scene with Chun Yu, which she felt very nervous about! Clara had a lot of action scenes but Ah Sheh also had many car chase and stunt scenes that she will have to make. She said that the difficulty would be with her tight fitting costumes that would keep her from adding protective pads. She will not have to go to Brazil for the location shoot so she will stay in Hong Kong to spend the Lunar New Year with her family. Although Lunar New Year has not arrived yet, Chun Yu already got some New Year wealth. He revealed that recently while shooting in the casino he played the slots and won 2,000 bucks. Of course he had to share it and treat everyone to food and drinks. Will he try again? He joked, "It won't be so small, I will go to a private room." LINE WALKER shot on location in Studio City Macau for its big and bold outdoor swimming pool. According to TVB the fight scenes were originally planned for a cruise ship, but because of scheduling and itinerary conflicts the location team finally made the change. One of the producers Elaine Lok Yi Ling said, "Because the story required an outdoor swimming pool that had to be very new, very large and very luxurious, this venue was very suitable for us. Unfortunately due to rain the shoot has been rescheduled for March! Because the film production needs a lot of coordination, this time Studio City Macau has been very helpful not only with the location but also with rooms and transportation. Thus it even became LINE's location sponsor." * (2016/01/28) King Kong, Kitty Yuen Siu Yi, Samantha Ko Hoi Ning and Jason Chan Chi Sun two nights ago taped the TVB program SUNDAY STAGE FIGHT. Eric Tsang Chi Wai was the judge. He said that he was on the side of the audience. If viewers thought they were good then they were good. The goal was to "work King Kong to death" because his acting was terrible. Speaking of Chi Wai's 2017 Lunar New Year film GEIN MONG CHUEN in Taiwan, he said that in the film he will have to wear a skull cap. His character was the villain. Other actors included Shu Qi and Joseph Chang Hau Chuen. Chi Wai also revealed that in the past half a year he has been flying frequently. He only paid rent for his place for the maid to live in. Now he is already done, but in the Lunar New Year he will perform in Las Vegas. He has not been in Hong Kong for the Lunar New Year for the past fifteen years. * (2016/01/28) Raymond Wong Pak Ming, Karena Ng Chin Yu, Patrick Tam Yiu Man, Jacquelin Chong Si Man and Lisa Chong Si Ming two nights ago went to the star special screening for ALL'S WELL ENDS WELL (GA YAU HEI SI) extended version. The film will be released at 30 cinemas during the Lunar New Year. Wong Pak Ming stated that he had no box office pressure, as he only wanted to give viewers more choices. Born in 1993, Chin Yu said that when ALL'S was released in 1992 she was not born yet. Yet every Lunar New Year she would watch it on television. She was even a Stephen Chow Sing Chi fan. She recalled that once when she and boyfriend Raymond Lam Fung were at dinner they ran into Sing Yeh. He not only took the initiative to greet them but also paid their bill. That day she was afraid of hinder her idol from his chat so she did not introduce herself to Sing Yeh or take photos. She will pay her boyfriend's family a Lunar New Year visit, but she had a headache over what to bring as a present. A child would be the best present, but she said that it was too soon. Neither of them were ready. Was she worried that the elders would urge them to wed? Chin Yu said that only the media was urging them to wed. The elders have not. Impersonating Leslie Cheung Kwok Wing early in his career, Tam Yiu Man felt very honored to be able to provide his voice for his idol. Yet because that day he went to record after finishing a movie, he was a little tired. His voice ultimately was not as mischievous and energetic as Gor Gor's. He stated that Gor Gor's voice was irreplaceable. He could hear the difference himself. [ BLAH OF THE WEEK ] Columns, Reviews, Interviews 1. MING PAO DAILY, JANUARY 31 2016, FILM WORDS AN: Lead Actress Performs Extremely Well This week's films would have difficulty with dark horse victories since Lunar New Year favorites would not open until next week. Of course, alternatives also have good choices. Aside from KILL THE MESSENGER, the Japanese film AN is also decent. This is also female director Naomi Kawase's new film. The original title AN is the Japanese pronunciation for "fillings". In a little Tokyo dorayuki shop, shop manager (Masatoshi Nagase) is the "one man shop" so he hires an assistant. An odd old lady (Kirin Kiki) applies. Because her homemade red bean paste filling is excellent, she receives a trial employment and even makes the business thrive with long lines. Yet neighbors discover the secret about her background, her dorayuki goes from everyone's favorite to everyone's fear. The best part of the film is the details of cooking red bean. The old lady puts love into every red bean and cooks attentively. As for her background secret, she comes from a "leper village" that the authorities have quarantined for several decades from the outside. She suffers the pain of discrimination. Now although the location has recovered and the quarantine lifted, she hopes to return to society but still cannot fulfill her dream. Later the shop manager and a kind hearted girl (Kyara Uchida) twice enter the village to visit her. The life and death scene is very touching. Numerous Japanese films are about food. The best impression came from the 80s Juzo Itami directed TAMPOPO, which is a particularly colorful cross section of "food" and is full of dark humor. AN is not a purely delicacy film, through the red bean paste filling the film reflects the anti discrimination theme. Kirin Kiki performs extremely well. (three out of five star) - SHEK KEI 2. APPLE DAILY, JANUARY 30 2016, SOMETHING TO SAY AARON KWOK: MONKEY KING LEVEL UP With the 1.1 billion RMB Mainland box office success of the 2014 film THE MONKEY KING (SAI YAU GEI ji DAI LAU TIN GUNG), director Soi Cheang Po Shui follows up with the Year of the Monkey Lunar New Year release THE MONKEY KING 2 (SAI YAU GEI ji SUEN NG HUNG SAM DA BAK GWUT JING). Aaron Kwok Fu Sing switches from playing the Bull Demon King to the Moneky King, Gong Li joins the cast as the White Bone Spirit. The cast remains star studded. Sing Sing even spends a lot of time to study the famous Sun Wukong and swears to upgrade the character. - CHO KA SING The film THE MONKEY KING 2 will open the Lunar New Year's Day. The film's Sun Wukong Kwok Fu Sing, Sand Monk Law Chung Him and director Cheang Po Shui earlier spoke about the film. Cheang Po Shui said in advanced that this story focused more of character relationships and story, which was also the reason that Sing Sing was chosen to replace Donnie Yen Chi Tan as Sun Wukong. "THE MONKEY KING's story was more simply action, but this time is about character relationships and the story more, so we chose Sing Sing. After years of dancing he has an action background. Everyone recognizes his acting, so I am confident that his performance will be a more layered Wukong." Breaking Through Old Impression Actually the story of Sun Wukong is well known. In order to bring this character to life with layers, Sing Sing said that long before the shoot began he already did his homework. "The best research figure was the famous Mainland actor Liu Xiao Ling Tong. In the Mainland whenever the character of Sun Wukong was discussed, everyone would think of Liu Xiao Ling Tong. He started to play the Pretty Monkey King since he was little in the opera troupe. I read one of his interviews in which he said that he already was a Monkey King. Instead he thought about how to play a person. You could imagine how much experience he had with this Pretty Monkey King." After the film began production, the character required super long make up time and highly difficult fight scenes. Everything left Sing Sing in pain that was beyond description. "That monkey make up began everyday at 4AM all the way until noon then the production began. When the sun set the workday ended and the make up was removed. In between I didn't dare to drink even water, because taking off the costume to go to the bathroom and then putting it back on would take half a hour. For two weeks everyday was like this." Sing Sing even stated that this time was the most difficult and the most challenging time in his film career. The first installment received an extremely high box office in the Mainland, this production's value of the Mainland market naturally was beyond any description. Sing Sing stated, "How can the same story be completely different. THE MONKEY KING had 1 billion at the box office. You can imagine everyone's recognition of the JOURNEY TO THE WEST. As for how to achieve breakthrough, the director this time added a very strong team with Law Chung Him, Xiao Shenyang, Feng Shaofeng. Everyone has seen their performance in THE GOLDEN ERA, WOLF TOTEM and other films. The addition of Him Jai set off a lot of spark with us. Everyone will see a completely different, very big breakthrough Him Jai." The Coolest Sand Monk Speaking of his co-star Law Chung Him, Sing Sing had nothing but praise. "He has a lot of talent, very smart. Aside from grasping the character he even built a new style Sand Monk, which was very rare. I feel that Him Jai is the coolest, the most handsome Sand Monk in history." Him Jai also said that this production experience was very memorable. "This time had many fight scenes, actually costume fight scenes was a first for me. I completely started from zero. I went to the Mainland early on to learn to wield the crescent moon staff. The first scene I had a big fight with Sing Sing, which was harder than I imagined. I completely started from zero, so I agreed with Sing Sing that it was the worst. After this experience I won't be afraid of anything." Facing the Lunar New Year competition from Stephen Chow Sing Chi's MERMAID (MEI YUN YUN) and the Chow Yun Fat and Andy Lau Tak Wa starred FROM VEGAS TO MACAU 3 (DOH SING FUNG WON 3), the director was very honest. "I don't think too much about that, as long as we have made a good movie, I can't care that much about the box office." Sing Sing said, "I feel that the New Year has many different movies, of course I want full bloom for everyone. I hope everyone can watch ours and watch other movies. I believe friends would automatically go." White Bone Spirit Gong Li Has Ample Screen Time The film THE MONKEY KING 2 aside from Sun Wukong and his journey companions naturally has another focus on Gong Li who plays the White Bone Spirit. Actually as the film is preparing to start production, director Cheang Po Shui said that he still did not have the suitable choice. "Actually from the start I really didn't know who to ask, I thought about it for a long time. One day the boss asked if we wanted to give Gong Li a try. I said if she would be willing, I would understand why Sun Wukong would have to strike her thrice. She completely is this calibre, not as simple as an ordinary villain." It was the first time that Gong Li came in contact with so many action scenes, but her performance still left Sing Sing with nothing but praise. "Gong Li's addition made the entire film even more solid, she has both beauty and acting abilities. To the character Gong Li gave a lot of personal opinions. All 3 different make up required a long time, no more needed to be said about her acting. Yet she even performed her own stunts, even when she was on wires 3 or 4 stories above ground." Aside from action scenes, her pair of windows to the soul was the most memorable for Sing Sing. "I really looked forward to what kind of White Bone Spirit Gong Li would bring everyone in the film. It isn't an ordinary White Bone Spirit, it actually is the demon queen. I believe few would be able to compare." Special Effect Upgrade Monsters Strong post production of THE MONKEY KING was one of its selling points, yet the audience was not only displeased with the special effects but also criticized as a "grade school" level. Cheang Po Shui stated that because the first installment's shortcoming, this time he had to answer to all the criticism and was determined to resolve the problem. "Last time had flaws, honestly last time was the first time. Everyone seemed to be feeling their way around, I have heard all of the criticism. I never avoided them or denied them, because these were the audience's real experience. Instead I told the boss that we had to face these problems." He explained that this time the master and the disciples returned from the Heavenly Palace to Earth. With more actual locations, the special effect problem that people condemned could be improved. Yet Cheang Po Shu stressed that he would not be stuck in a rut because of criticism. He said, "This time the focus is on organism types, in the film fights against tiger and dragon would appear, in the end the White Bone Spirit truly was on top of the monster." In conclusion, he felt that whether the story, the characters or special effects everything has improved this time. The film will still use a lot of computer special effects and IMAX format for screenings. 3. TA KUNG PAO, JANUARY 29 2016, FILM AND TELEVISION MARKET TREND DE NIRO REMAINS AS SHARP AS EVER Next week will be the Lunar New Year slot, many Lunar New Year films will officially open. It will also be the time for Chinese films to shine. Last week, THE REVENANT without any strong competition again landed in first place with HK$ 4.67 million. Over three weeks it accumulated HK$ 15.35 million and will likely breaking 20 million. The newly released comedy DIRTY GRANDPA made HK$ 3.14 million in second place, the performance was rather decent. Robert De Niro truly is as sharp as ever, as the audience finds this DIRTY GRANDPA rather acceptable; IP MAN 3 made HK$ 2.78 million in third place, over five weeks it made HK$ 55.81 million with extraordinary endurance; the newly release Hong Kong comedy HOUSE OF WOLVES (NGOK YUN GUK) made HK$ 2.7 million in fourth place. Some feel that this film is Vincent Kok Tak Siu's return to form as Francis Ng Chun Yu and Ronald Cheng Chung Kei truly set off spark. Released the week before, THE 5TH WAVE made HK$ 2.64 million in fifth place, over two weeks it made HK$ 8.06 million; the film opened last week in the U.S. and made US$ 11.05 million, sixth on the weekend box office chart. As for other new releases, THE BIG SHORT made HK$ 1.94 million in sixth place, with advanced screenings it made HK$ 2.32 million; this film opened last December in the U.S. and made US$ 56.68 million, an ideal performance; unfortunately once the film left the U.S. border the performance has been disappointing. The sports theme CONCUSSION made HK$ 520,000 in thirteenth place, with advanced screenings it made HK$ 660,000; the Japanese science fiction film THE BIG BEE made HK$ 430,000 in fourteenth place, with advanced screenings it made HK$ 480,000; the Sandra Bullock starred OUR BRAND IS CRISIS made HK$ 220,000 in sixteenth place, a less than ideal box office performance. As a Lunar New Year opening film it was not considered successful. - LAM KAM BO 4. TA KUNG PAO, JANUARY 28 2016, ASIAN FILMS TAG Since its beginning, film has a type called "chase movies". In the entire film actors either are being chased or chasing others. From the early comedy to the later detective, adventure, and even horror films there have been many examples. Recently a movie promotion caught attention online, it started with some horrifying visuals that led to a series of chases. The Sion Sono directed TAG could be said as a movie that pushes the "chase movie" concept to its extreme. - HUNG KWONG When the movie begins, the Reina Triendl played high school girl is on the a graduation trip bus. All the students on the bus are out of their minds. Suddenly a strange storm brews on the highway and cuts the students, teachers, the driver and the bus in half. She luckily escapes when she happens to pick up a pen. Running out of fear, she discovers that the strange storm is chasing her. Everyone on the road are cut in half......after all the running she reaches the school, only to discover that today is an ordinary school day. Students chat and laugh with her, the classes are quiet as usual. Is everything only a nightmare? Teachers suddenly pick up a variety of automatic weapons and start to spray across the classroom. All of the students run for their lives. Friends around the female protagonist drop one by one, only she alone reaches the police station. However, the cops drag her to a wedding where the female protagonist discovers that she has become someone else. She is getting married to someone with a pig's head! Then the case begins again...... Running Away From Logic TAG is the latest film adaptation from the Yusuke Yamada's novel RIARU ONIGOKKO. In the original novel in 3000 AD, a kingdom decides to have a seven day long "game" of "hide of seek to capture everyone named Sato". The entire nation of 1 million people is "ghost", equipped with special goggles known as the "Sato detection goggles" to search for anyone named Sato nearby, the 5 million targets around the nation. Those captured are taken to the kingdom's confidential shelter to be killed. The high school female lead uses her own track skills to survive. After this novel's release, in a few short years it has already been adapted to films numerous times. Although the story backgrounds are slightly different, they all use the original "Sato chase" set up. The visuals displayed are also all nonstop chases, only that they still have certain "logic" that can be followed. Sion Sono's latest adaptation is different from the previous films. Although it uses the usual title (The Japanese film title is the same as the book), the entire story is already turned upside down. From the Sato chase in the novel to the chase for all the women other than the lead, this world also lacks any logic that the audience can understand it with. Everything starts and ends suddenly, only running on the road is real. Why would it so strange? Why would the female protagonist change suddenly between innocent schoolgirl Reina Triendl, bride Mariko Shinoda and long distance runner Erina Mano? Everything is just like a computer game. Running Toward The Cold And The Cruel Actually this really is a game. Sion Sono not only makes a "chase movie" but a science fiction movie. The entire story's world is only a computer game. Such a set up may remind most of THE MATRIX, but it probably is closer to the 1999 American film THE THIRTEENTH FLOOR or the even earlier West German television series WORLD ON A WIRE. Human enters the virtual world of electronic games, interacts with characters in the game and discovers that the "virtual characters" in the computer world have become self aware. The world of the game characters actually is the simulation of another world......in the same manner people in the film realize that they are only "game characters", TAG actually is even closer to the reality of the game world. In the market, chase and shoot games are definitely more numerous than "virtual life". In the film people keep getting chased for no reason, which is the perspective from the people in the game. Whether this world is even more absurd than the world that kills people for no reason in the original novel, it would depend on who you ask. Of course, for the audience to be the "game character" for over a hour you cannot tell everyone that she is an unconscious machine and all the reactions are preconfigured. How would the character's self awareness be displayed? The director uses a rather extreme method but does not clearly express the final answer. This absurd story may in the end push the director's cold and cruel film world to its limits, and is also the most able to demonstrate this concept of "chase" to its end. There is only chase and no reason. The film provides an almost early film's pure sensory stimulation, by the end the film also adds a little philosophy for adjustment. TAG should be the most successful "adaptation" of RIARU ONIGOKKO. [ In Production Now/Soon ] Can : Wong Pai Dau Wong Pai d. Moon is eldest brother and head of the family. The film begins with the celebration of his 7th anniversary wedding with Leng, which celebration he deserts, preferring instead the company of his mistress. He turns up at home with her later, forcing his wife (whom he calls 'hag') to leave the house in dismay. Although she is very devoted to her husband and tolerates him for all his misbehaviors, her tolerance stops short of accepting his mistress openly in the family home. So is an effeminate floral arranger and lecturer at an art school, who is good at cooking and enjoys women's hobbies. His second cousin Mo-seung comes to his house on that same evening, and entirely devours an elaborate gourmet banquet which So had intended as a gift for Leng on her otherwise disastrous wedding anniversary. From that day on, So and Mo-seung are constantly at loggerheads over trivial issues, insulting each other with vulgar metaphors during a mahjong game session, apparently irreconcilable. Foon is a local radio DJ who flirts shamelessly while on air and is well-known among his legion of female fans for his impressive kissing technique. She is convinced that Foon shares her romantic outlook and they soon become lovers. Foon, however, is a notorious playboy not eager to settle down. Predictably, Holli-yuk catches him in an act of infidelity. After a freak accident leaves Foon suffering from a mildly debilitating mental illness, Holli-yuk offers to become a nurse for him. Taking advantage of her role as his nurturer, she gleefully devises methods to punish him for his callous behaviour. The brothers' dilemmas are later resolved in similarly titled sequel films. Through their infrequent contact, the two fathers develop an interesting relationship. Unexpectedly, gangsters led by Sang are trying to take over properties in the neighbourhood and Ip Man decides to lead his students to guard the neighbourhood! Ip Man's conflict with the gangsters becomes heated and he discovers that the boss behind the takeover is the foreigner Frank. Because Frank colludes with an English police superintendent, even the police inspector Fat Ball cannot do much to help. Undeterred, Ip Man stays to guard the Unexpectedly, Sang abducts the elementary school students to threaten the community and both Ip Man and Tin-chi's sons are taken. Ip Man arrives in time, and with Tin-chi's help, the Wing Chun duo save the children successfully! The gangsters' misdeeds are exposed in the media and the takeover of the neighbourhood ends. Unfortunately, tragedy hits Ip Man's family and he realizes that even though he is successful in saving the neighbourhood, he has neglected his own family. He decides to stay with his wife full time and leave other matters behind; troubles, however, do not leave him alone. Frank sends the Muay Thai Champion to attack Ip Man, disrupting his time with his family and threatens even his wife's safety. Ip Man is forced to confront Frank. After a fierce fight between Chinese and Western fighting styles, Ip Man earns Frank's respect! Troubles keep coming. Tin-chi openly challenges Ip Man's authority and tries to make a name for himself by claiming to be 'authentic Wing Chun.' He openly challenges Ip Man into a fight! Between career and family, Ip Man chooses the latter and fulfils his promise to dance with Wing-sing. He gives up his reputation and status to be a real man. Finally, with the encouragement from and arrangement by his wife, for himself and his family, Ip Man fights with Tin-Chi. Through this fight, he lets Tin-chi know that life belongs to oneself but not only to oneself. When Tin-chi is chasing after his ideals, he is effecting the life of his son. Like Ip Man, his life belongs to himself, to Wing-sing, to his sons and even to the martial arts.
