MISCELLANEOUS * (2016/01/20) FROM VEGAS TO MACAU 3 (DOH SING FUNG WON III) brings together superstars Chow Yun Fat, Andy Lau Tak Wa, Nick Cheung Ka Fai, Jacky Cheung Hok Yau and Carina Lau Ka Ling. Director Andrew Lau Wai Keung described the film as "all the gods return" with "Ko Chun", "Dagger Chan" and "Dragon" as well as villain Cheung Hok Yau. He said that Fat Gor and Cheung Ka Fai had the "yin and yang" comedy effect. The former would talk a lot and Cheung Ka Fai would just say one line. If both were "yang" then it would be Mars crashing into Earth. FROM 3 had the comedic PRISON ON FIRE classic scene. Fat Gor even turned into "MAN IN THE NET" and was hung in mid air. He and Lau Ka Ling continued the romance from the previous film. She had to make a choice betwen Fat Gor and Hok Yau. Ka Ling appeared with very changes like she was in a fashion show, but she still was jealous of Hok Yau. In the film each one of his costumes were priceless. * (2016/01/20) Leon Lai Ming and Wang Luodan worked together on the film THE SECRET (SIU SUT DIK OI YUN) and played a romance that was destined to be lost. They even had many kiss scenes. Lai Ming was invited to perform the theme song for the film, interpreting the character's emotions with his singing. He said, "Too many things in our lives are taken for granted. They are so simple that most seem to overlook them. Yet at a certain moment, we would suddenly realize that these normally seemingly ordinary happiness are gone. We would only feel their value once they are gone." * (2016/01/20) The Stephen Chow Sing Chi directed film MERMAID (MEI YUN YU) will open during the Lunar New Year. He and his lead actress Jelly Lin Yun spoke to the media. Sing Yeh released another film after three years, Sing fans were obviously looking forward to it. Unfortunately Sing Yeh this time did not perform on screen. Sing Yeh admitted that he would like to perform on screen again, but he has been waiting for a good role. Speaking of the audience looking forward to his performance, he joked, "That's true too." Did he no longer want to be in front of the camera? He said, "It's not that I don't want to, if I have a character I like I would. I want to try a character that I haven't done before and people would never expect me to play." He pointed out that in the film Show Lo (Law Chi Cheung)'s octopus actually was rather outrageous. He thought that if Piggy turned it down he would take it. Would he make another Mo Le Tau comedy? He joked that he has always been making them all along, but as an actor the character would have to be attractive for him to. Speaking of past box office successes, did he have any expectation this time? He admitted that he has not thought about it. As for this film's meaning, he said that it did not have much. Actually it was a fairy tale love story, but this time he set it in a world with real mermaids. He said that earlier he has seen the related documentary films, mermaids might be real. Sing Yeh felt that directing was tough, but the actors had a tougher than he did because shooting in the water was truly very cold. Sing Yeh said that after the shoot he knew that making a mermaid story was actually very hard, no wonder few films have been about this. He also said that in comparison to past mermaid films, this one was even more romantic. He joked, "Our mermaid has no legs. If she has legs she would been human. What would be so strange about a human and human love story? Human love happens everyday, but an amphibious one? This love has already exceeded species. When you love even a fish, that love truly is infinite." As for using new comer Lin Yun, Sing Yeh explained that she was able to achieve reactions that others were unable to. He has never seen a woman like this. Speaking of the ALL'S WELL ENDS WELL (GA YAU HEI SI) extended version Lunar New Year release, he said that he had no idea. * (2016/01/20) Irene Wan Bik Ha, Patrick Tam Yiu Man and Charmaine Fong Ho Man two nights ago attended the film LOVE IN LATE AUTUMN (OI JOI SUM CHAU) premiere. Other guests included Edmond So Chi Wai and his wife Winnie Lau Siu Wai, Shek Sau, Carlos Chan Ka Lok and Deep Ng Ho Hong. Irene this time not only starred but also produced for the first time, thus she had a lot of expectation for her new film. Will he book shows for her friends? She said, "Tonight I booked half a show, my husband came but my son is still little. We didn't bring him." Irene later will promote the film in Guangzhou, Foshan, Zhuhai and other places. The family will take a vacation during the Lunar New Year. She said, "If the box office reached 100 million, I would take everyone to Bali. However the box office would not be the most important. For the first time good word of mouth would be the most important. If the audience responds well, I will keep making more." Tam Yiu Man also felt that the 100 million box office vacation would be a good idea. He also said that he planned to take his family of four to Australia for the Lunar New Year. Due to the recent terrorist attacks, Bali became a high risk area. Would they worry about their safety? Irene said, "No, it probably is safe. I have a Mainland series that will shoot in Shanghai, but will shoot on location in England. I will be careful on my trips." Tam Yiu Man said that he originally planned to visit Europe but after the terrorist attack in France he changed it to Australia in the end. * (2016/01/19) Andy Lau Tak Wa and Chris Lee Yuchun performed their film FROM VEGAS TO MACAU 3 (DOH SING FUNG WON II) theme song KUNG HEI FAT CHOI 2016. They performed the original KUNG HEI FAT CHOI with an all new arrangement and rap, with stronger rhythm and Lunar New Year atmosphere. In FROM VEGAS TO MACAU 3 Lee Yuchun played God of Gamblers Ko Chun's cousin and an elder to Lau Tak Wa's "Dagger". Thus during the shoot Wa Jai had to call her Goo Goo. They were described as the "dream team". * (2016/01/19) Best Actor Aaron Kwok Fu Sing, Gong Li, Feng Shaofeng, Xiao Shenyang and Law Chung Him starred Lunar New Year epic THE MONKEY KING 2 (SAI YAU GEI ji SUEN NG HUNG SAM DA BAK GWUT JING) released its production special that not only displayed almost mythical special effect make up but also "White Bone Spirit" Gong Li's self sacrificing performance. During the shoot she performed personally in front of the special effect "green screen" on wires two stories above the ground. She was unfazed as she dove down. "Sun Wukong" Kwok Fu Sing also performed outstandingly, he was in full control of the King Kong staff in his hand. He even jumped on wires with one leap to several stories high in the sky, then practiced kung fu in mid air. * (2016/01/19) Stephen Chow Sing Chi's new film MERMAID (MEI YUN YU) yesterday held YOU ARE THE BEST theme press conference in Beijing. The film promotional song YOU ARE THE BEST IN THE WORLD's music video was played. Sing Yeh and performers Karen Mok Man Wai and Adam Cheng Siu Chau appeared. Karen and Chau Guoon even received special "mermaid" models and "Invincible Fragrant General" fish tail fan. Sing Yeh was asked why he chose this classic Cantonese song. He said that he particularly liked old song. This song's first element was wuxia and the second was emotions. As for why he asked Karen and Chau Guoon to team up, Sing Yeh admitted that the song title represented everything. "No matter how I look at it, in the end you are still the best!" He praised their version for even stronger emotions and even more mermaid flavor. Karen said that she agreed right away and that Sing Yeh of course had to ask her. He had no other choice. Chau Guoon revealed that his wife and his daughter are both Sing Yeh fans. "My daughter while watching his movie fell from the sofa to the floor from laughing. I am his fan too. He is like a very wonderful chef, able to bring together various ingredients for a new flavor." Speaking of working with Karen for the first time, Chau Guoon said that his daughter once said Karen sang very well. He felt that BEST was a hero song, but Karen had quite a bold handle on it as well. She was able to perform a lot of the deeper emotions. The trio in the music video danced and sang. Karen even said that other directors while recording would not dare to do this. Chau Guoon said, "If another director recorded a song like this I would kick him out." Karen and Sing Yeh worked together again after fifteen years. She said, "When I worked with him when I was young, I wasn't afraid of anything. It was a very rare experience. Without his films I wouldn't be here today. Now many people still think that my teeth are like they were in GOD OF COOKERY (SIK SUN)." She said that she has performed songs in Sing Yeh films and thus she was able to develop her singing career. She stated the Sing Yeh was her benefactor. Chow Sing Chi replied, "Mok Man Wai has more and more flavor, and is prettier and prettier." In addition, new "Sing Girl" Jelly Lin Yun admitted that she was very lucky to be able to perform in Sing Yeh's film. However the pressure was huge, at work everyone was very serious. Sing Yeh said, "I saw a new comer go from being inexperienced to coming in contact with acting, the process was difficult. This character actually was also very hard, but the result was the best. Mok Man Wai was that way too back then." Chau Guoo and Sing Yeh actually worked together 28 years ago. The event played their scene from the television series BEHIND SILK CERTAINS. Chau Guoon revealed that when they shot their last scene at the airport, the airport was rushing them out of fear that they would affect operation. However Sing Yeh very seriously studied how he would die at the elevator door, which kept hitting him. Sing Yeh joked that at the time Chau Guoon said, "Since you can't die no matter how you try, I am leaving work first!" * (2016/01/19) The 2015 Hong Kong Film Critic Society Awards yesterday announced its winners. Producer Irene just returned from Chongqing and revealed that the Mainland audience's reaction to the film was decent. Will she make a sequel? Irene said, "Actually I am thinking about other stories, I want to try dark comedy, family and romance." Speaking of her Beijing commercial property purchase, Irene said that she was still looking. "I only rented that place out, when I invest of course I want the best. So I am looking for a good spot." Ah Tam said that he has not invested in the Mainland, "If I invest I would invest in film first, but I have to wait until my kids are grown first. Now when I make 10 bucks I only spend 1, when I am broke I would ask my wife." * (2016/01/18) Dominic Ho Ho Man two nights ago appeared in Causeway Bay with his THE GIGOLO 2 (NGAP WONG 2) co-star Connie Man Hoi Ling, Hazel Tong Chi Yui and Iris Chung Choi Yi for an audience appreciation event. They played games with and gave away prizes to the audience. Dominic and Man Hoi Ling were surrounded as they posed for pictures. Later they agreed that they knew the S and M scene in the end and the funny parts became bright spots for viewers. "The director was too serious with all the blood and violence." Dominic felt that this time was more dramatic than last time, the lighting and the camera angles were decent. After the premiere did he ask his "future girlfriend" for her opinion? He said, "Lately I am very busy, I haven't asked her yet. However my dad after the show gave me a few pats and said it was pretty good. He told me, 'I will wait and see what will you do in the next one'. He seemed to be trying to pressure me to play something else. My Ma said that she was very sleepy. I didn't dare to think what reaction my parents would have from watching my bed scene. My dad actually took my grandma to see the early show of the last film. After watching Grandma told me, 'I know it's tough for you!'" Iris had a wound on her forehead. She joked, "Domestic violence at home! I am just joking, I fell down because I didn't have my glasses on. Luckily my arms broke the fall. Seniors who live alone really have to be more careful. Actually I get hurt very easily. Earlier when I worked on a fight scene with (Joyce) Cheng Yun Yi, she was fine but I was bruised all over." * (2016/01/18) The Aaron Kwok Fu Sing played 3D fantasy epic THE MONKEY KING 2 (SAI YAU GEI ji SUEN NG HUNG SAM DA BAK GWUT JING) will open simultaneously around the world in over 50 cities. The film company asked music master Peter Kam Pui Tat to create the film theme song IT IS SUN WUKONG with Siu Mei's lyrics. The theme song music video originally would just include film footage, but Sing Sing hoped to be able to bring about a music video with some fashion sense. He took advantage of his new film's break and remotely studied the dance steps with a choreographer then took a day off from the set to shoot it in Hong Kong. He also used the film production team and the concert special effect team in the shoot as well to make an unique "three high" music video: high efficiency, high quality and high energy, to coordinate with the strong film promotion. For this music video, Sing Sing spent two hours on his "golden Sun Wukong head". He also jumped and danced with a group of dancers in monkey costumes. He even used the heavyweight King Kong staff from the film. Sing Sing appeared in the golden Wukong look with a suit and performed inside the Journey to the West film museum, giving the music video even more dimensions across time and space. Sing Sing said that he really liked this theme song, especially when he sang "no compromise no explanation". He was able to relate and was moved. * (2016/01/16) The film WONG PAI DAU WONG PAI yesterday held a Beijing press conference. Leads Andy Lau Tak Wa, Huang Xiaoming, Shen Teng, Wong Cho Lam and Ouyang Nana appeared. The three lead actors made sexy poses and Xiaoming was even called the "Best Actress". The newlywed was asked about his life with Angelababy. He said that normally he flirts to cheer up his wife. Lau Tak Wa said that because he had to accommodate Shen Teng's schedule the Hong Kong shoot had to move to Beijing. Later Huang Xiaoming said that Lau Tak Wa was his idol. He even had his posters all over the wall. Seeing him he was flooded with memories from his youth. * (2016/01/16) Artist Christine Ng Wing Mei two nights ago attended the film GONG WU HEI KET (MOB COMEDY) wrap banquet in Hong Kong. Speaking of "breaking the ice" with Joel Chan Shan Chung at Myolie Wu Hung Yi's wedding banquet, she said, "I only found out after reading the newspaper. No, I haven't mentioned Chan Shan Chung for so many years. No one knows if I was mad and I never mentioned it. This time we saw each other again we were fine, (Tavia) Yeung Yi brought him over to say hello, I was very happy to see him. I very politely gave him a hug. After greeting him I felt much better. We gave each other a nod and exchanged pleasantries." As for why she did not mention him for so many years, Ng Wing Mei said, "I wouldn't be so deliberately, undoubtedly something happened but did I have to broadcast it? If I was upset do I have to get into a fight? I am a big picture person, I know how to handle it. I just let it take its natural course. I wouldn't hold a grudge for life, I would only remember happiness for life." Alan Tam Wing Lun was asked about the Ng Wing Mei seduction scene. He said, "She is very hot, she was all over my thigh and I gave some reaction. (what reaction?) I howled like a hungry wolf." He also praised Jaime Chik Mei Chun for being just as "hot". "In one scene I carried her for three hours, I was hot and out of breath." * (2016/01/16) The Aaron Kwok Fu Sing, Gong Li, Law Chung Him starred Year of the Monkey Lunar New Year film THE MONKEY KING 2 (SAI YAU GEI ji SUEN NG HUNG SAM DA BAK GWUT JING)'s film company invested in 100 global limited edition Pretty Monkey King Sun Wukong 1:1 scale wax statues that will be placed in China, Hong Kong and Taiwan cinemas for promotion. The film company said that every statue would carry the magic staff on a cloud. Another Lunar New Year film, the Stephen Chow Sing Chi directed MERMAID, due to Taiwan's 10 Mainland film quota was unable to "land" in Taiwan after barely missing out. Taiwan star Show Lo (Law Chi Cheung) through his manager said, "It's a little regrettable, I of course hope Taiwan fans will have the chance to see the film that I have put a lot of preparation into!" * (2016/01/16) The Vincent Kok Tak Siu directed film HOUSE OF WOLVES (NGOK YUN GUK) two nights ago attended the premiere. Francis Ng Chun Yu, Ronald Cheng Chung Kei, Candy Yu On On, Babyjohn Choi Hong Yik, Cheung Tat Ming, Lam Tsz Chung, Josie Ho Chiu Yi, Wylie Chiu Shek Chi and Chrissie Chau Sau Na attended. Edmond Leung Hon Man came to support Wilfred Lau Ho Lung. Ronald and his wife Sammie Yu Sze Man arrived holding hand. Everyone wrote Lunar New Year couplets on the spot and toasted to box office success for the film. Chun Yu and Ronald are both fathers, they said that this film was suitable for the entire family. Yet Ronald said that he would not take his daughter. Because his daughter always asked questions, he did not want to bother other people. Chun Yu said that the premiere was not convenient for him to bring his son. Later he will take him. Did his son always ask questions? He said that he would not. When his son was at the movies he would enjoy the film himself. Sometimes he had no idea what his son was laughing at, as they had different definitions of humor. As for the box office, Ronald pointed out that last year Hong Kong had little to laugh about. He hoped that everyone could laugh for two hours; Chun Yu also said that this film was a rare authentic Hong Kong film and he hoped that everyone would support it. As for the Lunar New Year plans, Chun Yu said that a group of friends will pay him a group visit at home. They will include Ronald, Dayo Wong Tze Wah, Sandra Ng Kwan Yu, Cheung Tat Ming, Sam Lee Chan Sam and others. Will Anthony Wong Chau Sun and Sean Lau Ching Wan attend? Chun Yu said that Chau Sun did not know how to play their poker games, and Ching Wan would come a little later; he also said that he will cook abalone and oyster for his friends. He pointed out that normally he would not play Lunar New Year visits to the director or other people, so his friends would come to his home instead. Sister Na said that this time she only guest starred for a day and played herself. Director Kok Tak Siu praised her as a stone faced comedian. Sister Na pointed out that this time was the third time that she worked with Ronald but they did not have many scenes together. She hoped that next time they would be able to have more; she also said that she really would like to make a comedy, but first she had to learn to hold back her laughter. Since she was playing herself, did she have to wear something sexy? Sister Na said that the director watched out for her and did not require her to wear anything sexy, only jeans and Lunar New Year clothing. The shoot was very comfortable. Sister Na originally planned to go to Japan for a hot spring trip with her family during the Lunar New Year. She even booked the flights and hotels, but in the last minute she would have to work in the Mainland. Now only her family will go. Would her Mainland job cover her family's vacation? She said, "I have to put in a little more." * (2016/01/15) The independent film TEN YEARS that prophesied Hong Kong's political climate ten years later is one of the hit films this years. TEN opened on December 17th at the Broadway Cinematheque. Although it only had a few shows everyday, almost every show was sold out. Later UA and MCL cinema circuits joined in, increasing the shows to 20 a day. As of two days ago it already accumulated HK$ 2.58 million, which absolutely was over its quota. A ticket for this film is still hard to come by, but Broadway earlier this month took the film out of circulation. The move led to online speculation that it was related to the film's heavy political flavor. With more media coverage the circuit took out of circulation as an actor of self political censorship. Broadway belonged to the Edko Film Ltd., which last year invested on many co-productions like RISE OF THE LEGEND (WONG FEI HUNG ji YING HUNG YAU MUNG) and OFFICE (WA LAI SEUNG BAN JOOK), but the biggest money maker was the 2 billion yuan Mainland hit MONSTER HUNT. TEN's producer Andrew yesterday said, "The film has been in release for two weeks. As it was preparing to enter its third week, (Broadway) told us that they had many other films that had to be released. I saw what you were talking about on facebook. At first they were willing to release it but at only one cinema. They probably would have made their evaluation before." Broadway's film scheduling department chief Mandy yesterday denied the political inspection idea. "It isn't related, earlier we have already mentioned to the film owner that the schedules will be very tight later. Actually it's almost done, the film has been running for a very long time (over two weeks)." Leung Kin Ping who played the taxi drive in TEN YEARS' DIALECT said that it was a scheduling problem. "No one would have guessed that the film would run for so long. As far as I know at first Broadway was the one that wanted to help TEN YEARS with its release." * (2016/01/15) The Jackie Chan starred new film RAILROAD TIGERS wrapped earlier but never officially announced its cast. Yesterday the film company finally released three posters and unveiled the three Flying Tiger "team members", Tao Huang Zitao, Nick Wang Kai and Dareen Wang. All three were last year's piping hot "god" representatives. The posters featured three warm colors of yellow, red and orange. They all had blood stains from "fierce battles" on their faces. The poster also had different slogans to reveal each characters' specialty. Later the film's official site also released three childhood photos. They all each held a toy train or rode a model train. Meanwhile Jaycee Chan (Fong Cho Ming) was arrested on drug charges in Beijing two years ago and his career came to a complete halt. Although Jackie Chan said that he would not help his son at work, he still acted in the end. Eric Tsang Chi Wai earlier hinted in Taiwan that Cho Ming will take place in Jackie Chan's new film RAILROAD TIGERS. Cho Ming who once said that he did not want to work with Jackie Chan did so this time not only to start over but also for his friend Ko Chen-Tung. Although the ban on both has been completely lifted, Ko Chen-Tung so far still has not been able to step foot in the Mainland market. Thus Cho Ming hoped to help his friend. He hoped that after his film was released that he would loosen the chains on Ko Chen-Tung. In addition, Ko Cheng-Tung earlier guest starred on Giddens Ko's new film. * (2016/01/15) Irene Wan Bik Ha and Patrick Tam Yiu Man in their new film LOVE IN LATE AUTUMN (OI JOI SUM CHAU) play a couple. First time producer Irene states that she has a sense of duty toward the film. "I want to contribute to the film industry, I hope to direct next time and make a movie that I like. I approach Ah tam because I want to find an actor who can act and also able to give the audience a sense of realism. When we work together we have great spark. Our performance has fire but still is comfortable. (The film is about first love, do you want your first boyfriend to see the message in your film?) I remember at the time my first love wanted to get married, but it was before I met my current husband. I didn't have confidence in marriage. At the time he was pretty hurt. Since then we no longer had any contact. No matter what, I hope he can cherish everything that he has now." As for Irene's compliment of being righteous, Ah Tam says, "I won't say I am righteous, I am only serious about work and family. I thank my real wife for her understanding and tolerance of me. Being able to play the husband of goddess Irene is a dream come true! (Have you ever fall for your co-star?) At first when I try to get into the character I would have some feeling, but so far I have never been unable to leave the character. I wouldn't let others tempt me either, I don't like complication!" * (2016/01/15) Chow Yun Fat, Andy Lau Tak Wa, Nick Cheung Ka Fai starred in the film FROM VEGAS TO MACAU 3 (DOH SING FUNG WON III), which earlier released its final poster and trailer. In the "Louis Cha heroes" trailer Chow Yun Fat loses his memory and claims to be Cheung Mo Kei, calls Andy Lau Tak Wa and Chris Lee Yuchun Yeung Gor and Little Dragon Maiden while Nick Cheung carries several fans to play the Giant Condor. Lee Yuchun in the film plays the God of Gamblers' cousin, higher ranked the God of Gamblers' disciple Lau Tak Wa. Lee Yuchun says that at first she cannot get used to Lau Tak Wa called her "Goo Goo" and feels a little odd. Later she becomes accustomed to it. * (2016/01/15) Louis Koo Tin Lok will be the 40th Hong Kong International Film Festival ambassador for the third year in a row as he will shoulder the duty of promoting Hong Kong film industry development and international film cultural exchange. The film festival also invited HAPPY TOGETHER, EROS and 2046 print designer Wong Sun Moon to be the International Film Festival theme designer. He created with 2046 stills to increase the audience's space of imagination. The triangle and circle logo not only represented "40" but also provided the audience with infinite imagination space to define for themselves. He said, "Film creates a space that contains story after story, story, characters and visuals transmit life and culture's secret codes." * (2016/01/14) Shine members Wong Yau Nam and Tsui Tin Yau, director Fruit Chan Gor and others attended a special screening of LES AVENTURES D'ANTHONY. Tin Yau after his wedding obviously gained weight. He said that earlier he has resumed work and begun recording in the studio. As for his earlier ad with his wife, Tin Yau said that it just happened to be suitable and it was not deliberate. He accidentally had another way to make money. Speaking of international superstar David Bowie's passing, Tin Yau said that his film THE MIDNIGHT AFTER (NA YEH LING SUN NGOR JOR SEUNG LIU WONG GOK HOI WONG DAI BO DIK HUNG VAN) used his song SPACE ODDITY to connect the film. "I just learned that director Chan Gor originally planned to invite him to guest star in the sequel, I never expected that he would pass away before the film even starts production. It's such a shame, I can only see what ideas the director would have. For now I still don't know when the production will start. I hope as soon as possible." * (2016/01/14) The film THE GIGOLO 2 (NGAP WONG 2)'s actors Connie Man Hoi Ling, Leslie Lam Lei Han, Iris Chung Choi Yi and Hazel Tong Chi Yui two nights ago attended the Tsim Sha Tsui premiere. Lead actor Man Hoi Ling praised Chung Choi Yi for how she dressed. "Even if you put me in her dress it wouldn't have the same effect, so there is no need for me to embarrass myself!" She also revealed that in the film she had a S and M scene with Tony Ho Wah Chiu and Winnie Leung Man Yi. She was tied up and felt like a big crab. "It was very awkward and very rough to be tied up. I finally understand why the big crab would spit up bubbles." Was she worried that her future boyfriend would mind her daring performance? Man Hoi Ling said, "Many people who saw the trailer thought it was very extreme, very exaggerated, I hope that in the future I will be able to find a mature guy who wouldn't mind, who will understand that this is just work." Chung Choi Yi explained that she only dressed provocatively for the film premiere to coordinate with the film subject. "Let everyone enjoy it a little!" She also revealed that she too had a S and M scene, which was her most daring performance yet. "The S and M scene with (Jazz) Lam Chi Sin and Ho Wah Chiu was a little bloody, I felt uneasy watching it because I am pretty traditional. At first when I got the script I was pretty resistant, but the director said that the result would be dramatic." The model turned actor Lam Lei Han already had nude scenes in her first film, including bed scenes and all nude scenes. She admitted that during the shoot she was crazy nervous. "It was very exciting! Luckily Ho Ho Man was very professional, he would not make me feel embarrassed." Dominic Ho Ho Man two nights ago attended his film THE GIGOLO 2 premiere. The two female leads Man Hoi Ling and Lam Lei Han both licked the ice pop that he raised. Ho Ho Man revealed that he has invited his family to attend the premiere. Will he take his girlfriend? He said, "I don't have a girlfriend, but I invited a friend I am seeing . I feel I need to let her know what kind of movies I would make to see if she can accept it. I hope she can!" Barbie Liu (Ha Wai Yu), Sophie Ngan Chin Man and Jeana Ho Pui Yu two nights ago attended THE GIGOLO 2 premiere. Ha Wai Yu's ugly yet funny costume in Stephen Chow Sing Chi's Lunar New Year film MERMAID was unveiled. Was she pleased with her look? She said, "I was very pleased! Sing Yeh helped me with the costume design. I don't mind playing ugly, maybe it is a special way to please the audience." Nga Chin Man recently worked on a Mainland film, which she admitted as testing the water for her. "I haven't acted in over a decade. This time is like testing the water for me. The film is with Sing Yeh's former team." * (2016/01/14) Recently Aaron Kwok Fu Sing has been working on the new film THE ETERNAL WAVE in the Mainland while promoting the Lunar New Year film THE MONKEY KING 2 (SAI YAU GEI ji SUEN NG HUNG SAM DA BAK GWUT JING) all over. His schedule has been jam packed! Last week while working on a stunt for ETERNAL he aggravated an old injury when he landed. He immediately returned to Hong Kong for treatment but did not rest much as he rushed back to work four days ago to promote MONKEY on Jiangsu Satellite television. Then he returned to Shanghai to continue the ETERNAL shoot. Sing Sing's manager Siu Mei on social media confirmed Sing Sing's injury and gave an update to the media and his fans. "Actually I wanted to cancel some jobs, but Sing Sing insisted on completing the MONKEY KING promotions that he promised to do. He completed the performance despite the pain, then returned to the ETERNAL WAVE team. This is truly a type of professionalism!" For his all new Sun Wukong image, Sing Sing before training three months before the shoot in hopes of merging the "Heavenly King" and the "Monkey King" into one. He stated that he was rather ambitious as he hoped to bring about the most complicated Sun Wukong with the most variety of personality in film and television history. "This is an Eastern super hero than is stronger than Iron Man." Director Soi Cheang Po Shui praised Sing Sing as "top notch" with interpreting Sun Wukong's body language and eyes. "Sing Sing's eyes are the most able to move the audience, from his eyes you can read his all new elevation of this character." This time Sing Sing had the most fights in his 30 year long film career, action director Sammo Hung Kam Bo designed many masculine, powerful yet complex action scenes. Sing Sing while wielding the magic staff suffered enough as he bruised his leg numerous times. However he joked that it felt great. Co-star Gong Li also praised Sing Sing for being tough. "During the break he still carried that magic staff around and practiced like crazy!" Sing Sing's Pretty Monkey King costume was the design of a Hollywood class special effect make up artists. Everyday he spent seven hours to "transform". Each strand of hair was glued onto him, which challenged his patience. The way cool Sun Wukong truly "could not lose", even the Venerable Tang Monk Feng Shaofeng dubbed him the "most handsome Pretty Monkey King in history". * (2016/01/14) Stephen Chow Sing Chi, Adam Cheng Siu Chau and Karen Mok Man Wai earlier recorded a song for the film MERMAID (MEI YUN YU), a remake of the classic song YOU ARE STILL THE BEST IN THE WORLD. Chau Guoon and Karen sang the song, during the session Sing Yeh's singing bug acted up and he joined the recording session. He harmonized with the "Hoo! Ha!" and even sang and danced with Chau Guoon. After the recording session, Sing Yeh asked the duo how his performance was. Chau Guoon replied with "flawless", which pleased Sing Yeh as he said, "Thank you". Karen sweetly said, "Actually did you choose this song to tell me something?" Sing Yeh who was once linked to her in rumors said, "That's right that's right, you finally understand this big concept!" Karen said, "So you finally get it? Although you are a little later." Chau Guoon celebrated the box office success in advance. "The movie with the song can't be topped, it will make 3 billion no matter what!" Sing Yeh's eyes widened. "3 billion? Which currency are you talking about?" They both said, "American dollar!" Some said that MERMAID has signed a 2 billion box office guarantee with five major Mainland distributors China Film, Longteng, Lianrui, Hehe and Enlight. In other words the producers could get the box office proceeds in advance. After the final box office exceeded that amount, the distributors would get first crack at the profit. Yet when the Mainland media asked the companies for confirmations, they all said that they could not reveal anything yet. [ BLAH OF THE WEEK ] Columns, Reviews, Interviews 1. APPLE DAILY, JANUARY 19 2016, SI AND NONSENSE WE REFUSED TO BE BULLIED! Actually 2016 has started for less than three weeks, why does it feel like a year's worth of events have already taken place? When absurdity follows absurdity, days indeed feel like years. Anyone with a weaker heart would not be able to handle it. From Lee Bo's disappearance, to 16 Taiwan girl Chou Tzu-Yu, to the Kwai Man Hoi incident in the past few days when he was made to disappear, made to appear, made to apologize, made to confess and made to be Chinese, these events made people both sad and angry; then the Taiwan election, the Taiwan media boycott of Huang An, the TVMOST Awards Distribution, Gregory Rivers (Hor Kwok Wing)'s HONG KONG (HEUNG GONG DEI), the impending HKU student protest, these event was uplifting to everyone. Various news led the emotions of those around us, all the rises and falls the rage and the disappointment, the moving, the this and the that. They ebb and flowed without end. Whether friends were in Hong Kong or Taiwan, their arousal index will soon explode. The topic of everyone's identity recognition has never been as heated. Hong Kong Neglects "Identity Recognition" Of course, whenever you run into "what are you", glass nation has tens of thousand glass hearts that would suddenly fly out and circle and circle. They are quite a bother. Honestly, Hong Kong people originally were colder, any conflict that they could avoid they would not bother with you; in addition, actually we originally are a colony with double identities, we never have too much feeling about "identity recognition". Hong Kong people, on this subject, actually, truly, are not, as easily, enraged. I am even rather certainly that plenty of Hong Kong people probably are not so resistant toward this identity of "Chinese". For example, when I was overseas when others asked me what I am, whether I was "chinois", I would not be at the point of vehement denial. At most I would add "from Hong Kong"; ultimately I truly am Chinese with black hair and yellow skin. Neither English nor French seemed to have the word "Wa Yun" (Isn't Chinese "Wa Yun"?) I would not have any feeling about this title. Only since who knows when, a group of bullying Gian insists on coming out and testifying that you are Chinese! You are Chinese! You are Chinese! Are they not tired? The government has government bullies, the masses have masses bullies, Lord help us. Whoever does not kiss up to them slightly, whoever speaks up against them, they would instead of backing up only get worse. More tolerant Hong Kong people, even the Taiwan people across the Strait, have been "Chinese" all along. Those who originally thought it was no big deal would feel sick and tired, in turn enraged. Of course, fostering this bullying climate are not only the bullies themselves but also the bullied. I have witnessed in this circle this type of bullying incident, how many are willing to come out and speak up each time? Each company that has been involved would always take the settlement approach. This time even the Korean company JYP was so afraid that it immediately demanded its artist to come up with a video apology. Even when your company does not support you, what else can you say? The company has a lot of people to raise. It's business, we know. Only when big companies are willing to kneel on their own, their artists ultimately suffer. After the matter various Lord Guan disasters were created, not only did they cross this side but unable to please the other. They saved the market but they could not save the label image, why bother? Obviously, people have had enough of this type of bullying. Yet this show business is still willing to tolerate, not to mention for quite a long time. Sigh. Some say that Taiwan is truly good. When one of their own is bullied, people would band together to show their support. For example in the Chou Tzu-Yu incident, some company clearly stated that they were willing to help her buy out her contract, some karaoke boxes removed Huang An songs from their selections, some media even boycotted, even the election voting showed the unity of the Taiwan people. On the other hand, in poor Hong Kong, when their artists are banned, they are on their own. Only With Unity Can Freedom Be Protected We indeed have no big company that is willing to help out our contracts for hundreds of millions, not enough large media to help boycott whoever, and truly avoided by all major labels. Yet at the same time, we too have physical group support. We do not have them, but we have you and me. In this year, I do not know how many times I have been stopped on the streets, brothers and sisters, words of encouragement, buying tickets and records to show support with real money, my heart has never been so warm. Even recently, many businesses big and small have said that they could support my Hong Kong Coliseum concert. Each person used their own way to show their support. We raise our own singers, which is also the unity that belongs to us Hong Kong people. Perhaps, over the past decade or so, this circle got too used to taking aim at a certain market. It felt that only making tens of billions every year was success. It forgot that sometimes in life being able to protect your last line of defense, your own freedom, your own space, is real freedom and joy. A year later, I still have not starved to death. I am even livelier and getting stronger and stronger. I can even boldly do what I want to do, which could be considered as another type of demonstration? Believe in the domestic, believe in myself, you will not be wrong. To all my colleagues, let's go. Hong Kong people, living on the edge is not impossible. In 2016, we have to be more united, to reject bullying together. - Denise Ho Wan Si A Wild Mushroom, A Free Person Who Lives On the Fridges of Show Business Started with Music, but Accidentally Through Creativity and Life See The possibilities of life. "Hope" and "Justice" Are My Beliefs 2. MING PAO DAILY, JANUARY 17 2016, FILM WORDS HIGH KEY STEVE JOBS, SUPERFICIAL MOJIN MOJIN : Superficial And Unrealistic This week two big Mainland hit films MOJIN: THE LOST LEGEND and GOODBYE MR. LOSER open in Hong Kong but as usual they get the cold shoulder. However the surprisingly thriving Mainland film market phenomenon cannot be overlooked and should probably be discussed. First, the Zhang Muye original work GHOST BLOWS OUT THE LIGHT grave robbing novel series has been popular in the Mainland for years. In 2015 they were adapted into two films. The Lu Chuan directed CHRONICLES OF THE GHOSTLY TRIBE despite a tidal wave of poor reviews still made 700 million yuan RMB. The later release the Wuershan directed MOJIN: THE LOST LEGEND had good reviews and already made over 1.6 billion at the box office with strong momentum still. No matter how Mainland China bans ghost films, their variations into monsters or fantasy are very popular and has business galore. Six years ago Hong Kong director Gordon Chan Ka Seung made the hit film PAINTED SKIN (WAT PEI) in the north with Donnie Yen Chi Tan, Zhou Xun, Chen Kun and Vicki Zhao Wei. It was the first successful example of turning ghosts into monsters. Later the Mongolian director Wuershan's PAINTED SKIN 2 had even higher box office. MOJIN starred Chen Kun, Shu Qi and Huang Bo as modern "golden touch" grave robbing experts. After retiring in the 80s they settled in the U.S. An international evil cult recruited them back to China to find a relic in a Xinjiang ancient tomb. This film manufactured a lot of computer generated special effects and traps, as well action, comedy and romance. It is both mysterious and cheerful, unfortunately it is also superficial and unrealistic. Its professional quality is still quite far from old Hollywood film THE MUMMY and the even older RAIDER OF THE LOST ARK. Better in the entire film was the memories of the Red Guard devolution in Xinjiang during the Cultural Revolution. Chen Kun and Huang Bo both fell for Angelababy, who was very graceful and lovable this time. (two out of five star) GOODBYE MR. LOSER: Full Of Imagination As for GOODBYE MR. LOSER, it is the first screen adaptation of the recently popular Beijing drama troupe Kai xin Ma Hua's play. None of the writer or director is famous in the film industry, but surprisingly the film made a mad 1.44 billion yuan. This modern comedy started with a wedding ceremony disruption. Lead actor Shen Teng strangely went back in time to his 1997 high school days, developed a love triangle with his current wife female classmate and the school beauty. He even became a top singer. Although it was odd and absurd with a lot of very rough edges, it was fortunately lively and full of imagination. GOODBYE MR. LOSER has been rumored to have plagiarized from the old American film PEGGY SUE GOT MARRIED, to me it was not so obvious. Actually it was even more under Hong Kong film influence and even poked fun at the 97 Hand Over. In terms of high school romance it was somewhat coincidental with the Taiwan film OUR TIMES. However the Mainland male lead was too unfaithful, unlike Taiwan's Darren Wong who was both innocent and handsome. (two and a half out of five star) - SHEK KEI 3. APPLE DAILY, JANUARY 16 2016, I CAME FOR OTHER PEOPLE'S FUN A SCAFFOLDING WORKER LIKE FILM SCREENPLAY COLLECTION A screen writing elder has said that screenplay is just like the scaffolding during construction. Each project needs to build scaffolding, but when the construction is completed the scaffolding would have been removed long ago. Of course, this was a self ridicule of a screenwriter. Yet does a screenplay truly need to be completely removed? Although creating is a living process, at least screenplay should been seen as a text work. The main reason that few screenplay collections are published usually is that screenplay is not in a format that is convenient for the general reader to read. It is more like a working text draft. Collecting The Draft Before Production While lecturing at film schools or universities, I would also be asked if I could show my screenplay to the students for they to study; a film school teacher hoped that I was able to provide some screenplay for teaching purposes. I thought, instead of one after another individual authorization I might as well directly publish a screenplay collection. Yet screenplay collection has always been alternative and had difficulty with large scale publishing. I thank CUP publishing for its support. CUP publishing has always published alternative cultural books. Thus when I mentioned publishing a screenplay box set of my first ten films, they provided their support. Yet perhaps because they constantly supported the alternative, this publisher finally announced its closing at the end of 2015. My screenplay collection thus became their "posthumous paper". Documented in this screenplay collection were mostly the set draft before the production. Reader would be able to see the changes between the screenplay and the film. Because even when I was the screen writer, director and producer, when I ran into problem I still kept making changes. Finding a Cover Artist Actually after making LOVE IN THE BUFF (CHUN GIU YU JI MING), I have been preparing for this screenplay collection. Finally it took three years. Perhaps some would be curious, since the film was done long ago what else had to be done with the screenplay content? First, because a lot of the screenplay's dialogue was written directly in Cantonese, for readers who did not understand Cantonese I added written version for any Cantonese usage in the screenplay. Yet the translation took quite a lot of time. On the other hand, the publisher hoped for a film poster for its cover. Yet it would involve actor image rights. Thus I thought I might as well take the chance to work with different artists from around the world for a film poster secondary creation. Finally I asked artists from the Mainland, Hong Kong, the U.S., Canada, Australia, Italy, Poland, Turkey and even as far as South Africa and Peru to participate. I thank Chau Digital that specialized in printing high class artwork for publishing 15 copies of the ten poster, which brought new visual impact for this screenplay collection. The screenplay collection could not possible bring into a lot of revenue, it was only a share with film lovers. In addition publishing cost was high, the publisher finally decided to only published 500 limited edition box sets (perhaps not even publicly distributed). Anyone who would be interested in this "film scaffolding" could check it out at the Making Film facebook page. - Pang Ho Cheung Ancestors from Panyu, born in Kwun Tong. TA KUNG PAO, JANUARY 15 2016, FILM AND TELEVISION MARKET TREND BIG FILM MOMENTUM CONTINUES Although the holidays ended last year already, the Christmas blockbusters still occupied key box office positions. IP MAN 3 remained on top with HK$ 7.54 million, over three weeks it accumulated HK$ 48.03 million. On last year's box office chart it would have placed ninth, above STAND BY ME: DORAEMON's HK$ 46.88 million; and on top of the Chinese film box office chart, exceeding LITTLE BIG MASTER (NG GOR SIU HAI DIK HAU JEUNG)'s HK$ 46.72 million. No matter what, such a good performance was worth congratulating. Released the week before, SHERLOCK: THE ABOMINABLE BRIDE made HK$ 5.35 million in second place. Over two weeks it made HK$ 9.14 million, this global hit British television series and handsome actor Benedict Cumberbatch's draw truly should not be underestimated. Distributor Golden Scene had a small victory. STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS made HK$ 4.77 million in third place, over four weeks it made HK$ 77.46 million. If this performance was on last year's box office chart it would have been in fourth place, above INSIDE OUT's HK$ 66.01 million. ANNIVERSARY (GEI LIM YUT) made HK$ 3.93 million in fourth place, over two weeks it made HK$ 15.66 million in a decent performance. The new release Golden Globe Best Film THE REVENANT made HK$ 3.53 million in fifth place. Perhaps this week with its three Golden Globe Awards its box office will hopefully rise. As for other new releases, the comedy DADDY'S HOME made HK$ 1.26 million in sixth place; A remake of the Argentine film of the same title, SECRET IN THEIR EYES made HK$ 930,000 in tenth place. With advanced screenings it made HK$ 1.09 million. The Japanese film 100 YEN LOVE made HK$ 190,000; the Japanese animation BAKUMAN made HK$ 180,000, with advanced screenings it made HK$ 240,000; the French film DHEEPAN made HK$ 110,000; THE 33 made HK$ 600,000; the Korean film YOU CALL IT PASSION made HK$ 68,000. At the Mainland box office, THE FORCE AWAKENS opened with 344.26 million RMB in first place. Such a performance in China without generations of STAR WARS fans absolutely relied on its big film format and draw; opening the week before, DETECTIVE CHINATOWN made 207.86 million RMB in second place. Over three weeks it made 634.86 million RMB; the new release SHERLOCK: THE ABOMINABLE BRIDE made 134.38 million RMB, better than expected; MR. SIX made 128.49 million RMB in fourth place, over three weeks it made 823.93 million RMB. This film will open next week in Hong Kong; opening this week in Hong Kong, MOJIN: THE LOST LEGEND made 82.73 million RMB in fifth place. Over four weeks it made 1,638,730,000 RMB; the new release Mainland animation BOONIE BEARS III made 25.06 million RMB in sixth place. Last year the Mainland box office made 44.069 million RMB, a 48.7% growth. It was the second largest growth since 2004, second only to 63% in 2010. Although it was still quite a distance away from the U.S.'s US$ 11.1 billion box office last year, soon it will hopefully come in first globally. Chinese films (including co-productions) made 27.136 billion RMB, 61.58% of the total box office and a rise of 68% from 10.981 billion RMB two years ago; 81 films made over 100 million at the box office, 47 were Chinese films. Among the top ten highest grossing films, MONSTER HUNT came in first with 2,439,000,000 RMB; FAST AND FURIOUS 7 made 2,426,000,00 RMB in second; LOST IN HONG KONG made 1,620,000,000 RMB in third; AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON made 1,466,000,000 RMB in fourth place; opening this week in Hong Kong, GOODBYE MR. LOSER made 1,435,000,000 RMB in fifth place; MOJIN: THE LOST LEGEND made 1,360,000,000 RMB in sixth; JURASSIC WORLD made 1,293,000,000 in seventh; JIAN BING MAN made 1,157,000,000 RMB in eighth; FROM VEGAS TO MACAU 2 (DOH SING FUNG WON 2) made 974 million RMB in ninth; and the animation MONKEY KING: HERO IS BACK made 953 million RMB in tenth place. Only three out of the top ten were American blockbusters, but their take was rather sizable and their might could not be underestimated. - LAM KAM BO 5. TA KUNG PAO, JANUARY 14 2016, ASIAN FILMS MOJIN: THE LOST LEGEND FORMS VISUAL SPECTACLE MOJING THE LOST LEGEND may be one of the most interesting cultural phenomenon in the Chinese literary world in recent years. The internet novel GHOST BLOWS OUT THE LIGHT in a year released two film adaptations, the Lu Chuan directed CHRONICLES OF THE GHOSTLY TRIBE and the Wuershan directed MOJIN: THE LOST LEGEND. The situation was somewhat like the fiercely competitive age of early Chinese film studios. In addition they had to adapt a modern novel, which was even more unusual. Now seemingly the latter release MOJIN: THE LOST LEGEND performed even more brilliantly at the Mainland box office and received an even earlier chance for a Hong Kong release. - HUNG KWONG The story of MOJIN: THE LOST LEGEND took place in the late 80s. Grave robbers (the so-called "golden touch captains") Hu Bayi, Wang Kaixuan and Shirley retired and settled in the U.S. Wu and Wang spent their days running from the Immigration department. A big deal showed up as a client invited them to find an ancient tomb on the plains of Inner Mongolia. They originally did not plan to take the job, but they discovered that among the items in the ancient tomb was something that was related to their first love Ding Sitian . When they found the ancient tomb on the plains back then, they ran into a mysterious accident and Ding Sitian passed away. Now they had to discover the secret of the tomb again...... Chinese Style Tomb Raiding With characters and some location hints from the original, MOJIN THE LOST LEGEND creates a Chinese version of THE MUMMY and LARA CROFT: TOMB RAIDER stories. Always interested in the fantasy genre, Taiwan producer Chen Kuo-Fu takes the somewhat rambling story of the original and molds it into a rather intense plot. Unfortunately he relies too much on the audience's familiarity with the original story, this film basically has not introduced the background of all the characters. We only know that Hu Baiyi, Wang Kaixuan and Shirley are grave robbers who just broke up and are "golden touch captains" for generations. Yet when people robbed graves in the past it was a last resort. In the 20th century, why would several young people robe the dead? The film never completely answers that. All the audience knows Hu Bayi and Wang Kaixuan were in Inner Mongolia during the Cultural Revolution, they ran into something mysterious and both barely escaped with their lives. As for the evil organization that hired them to find the tomb, the film also never gives too many details. Perhaps why rob graves? is not the question that MOJIN is concerned with. This film basically is the traditional "chase movie". They still find an ancient tomb, under attack from a variety of "organism" that guards the tomb then they run for their lives. From the "Red Guards" in the 60s to "destroying the Four Olds" in a mountain goddess tomb, to the 80s when they looked for the goddess tomb for the evil cult leader, the film follows this formula. Those organism that attack humans, from blood sucking bugs to a variety of zombies, have no clear background at all. Ultimately when they appear they attack people. Lacks Cultural Meaning The Hollywood film with many similar scenes, THE MUMMY had monsters in those pyramids like mummies and scarabs. They all had actual historical relic originals. Then they had a lot of cultural product rendering with a world with magic to bring them about. Yet in MOJIN, in order to keep gods and ghosts from the film this background is very flimsy. They are only excuses for visual spectacles to appear. In the end the appearance of monsters are only reasons for actors Chen Kun, Huang Bo and Shu Qi to run. They have little opportunity to interact with the living, not to mention a touching love story like in THE MUMMY. Perhaps, MOJIN is a format challenge to Hollywood and tells a Chinese RAIDER OF THE LOST ARK story and film. Its greatest shortcoming remains in grave robbing. Even with a pretty name like "the golden touch captains", the goal of grave robbers in the film is still money. They still have a ceremony and "communication" with the grave owner. If the grave owner objects, they do not take a cent. Yet the grave robbers of the West would also have an armor of civilization, the packaging of adding to the human civilization understanding to look for treasures. They do not purely do it for goals like money or everlasting life (at least the leads would not). The skillful lead is also well educated, often an university educator and the sort. Although in recent times Westerners' archeological digs often has cultural invasion elements, but the reason is stronger than just simply taking the treasure from tombs. MOJIN's characters toward relics is either treasure to get rich from or Four Olds to be destroyed. Ultimately they lack the curiosity toward the unknown. I do not know what Chinese archeology workers would think when they see a film like this. 6. TA KUNG PAO, JANUARY 14 2016, LIGHT SHADOW PATH 2015 FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF HIT FILMS 2015 has gone. Many film related numbers have gradually arrived. Hong Kong has a saying, "lies are afraid of calculations". In other words, lies are no match for the truth. In the past year, China's total box office was 4.4 billion RMB. In two or three years it would likely surpass the U.S' US$ 10 billion box office to become the world's highest grossing box office nation. Thus the route that Chinese film has to take is a very important lesson. If predicted correctly, it will be greatly helpful to film company development. If not the company will fall behind the market. Last year aside from some pointing out that film companies had to work for BAT (Baidu, Ali, Tencent), two other theories were common. One was IP is king, and the other is the Hong Kong film element decline. BAT's influence on the film industry indeed has been huge, as they are depended on for ticketing, marketing and other areas. Yet last year their movement stopped with acquisition and collaboration. Ali Pictures even agreed that they were not competition for the conventional film companies. Their purpose was to more effectively develop the value of film, their service level was different from film companies. The content of film remained the center of the industry, which certainly would not change in the future either. As for the question of intellectual property, the topic that has been pushed to the top was that film companies from now on no longer hire professional screen writer to start projects. Instead they create IP with online writers through a competition format as they feel that it will be the general trend of the future. It is very hard to say whether this will be the trend as examples of IP film adaptations have always been around, they are especially popular in the U.S. In terms of last year's Mainland Chinese film box office chart, among the top ten films only 4 were IP adaptations. They included GOODBYE MR. LOSER (1.44 billion RMB), MONKEY KING: HERO IS BACK (956 million RMB), WOLF TOTEM (699 million RMB), and CHRONICLES OF THE GHOSTLY TRIBE (682 million RMB). The box office champion MONSTER HUNT (2.349 billion RMB), the second place LOST IN HONG KONG (1.613 billion RMB), JIAN BING MAN (1.16 billion RMB), FROM VEGAS TO MACAU 2 (975 million RMB), DRAGON BLADE (744 million RMB) and SPL 2 (560 million RMB) were not IP adaptations. In other words, if films only focused on IP last year, they would have lost half the battle. The gradual elimination of Hong Kong elements and Hong Kong filmmakers is always a frequently seen topic, but from last year's performance this idea is untrue. The box office champion co-production film was the Hong Kong director Raman Hui Sing Ngai's MONSTER HUNT, Wong Jing's FROM VEGAS TO MACAU 2 and the Daniel Lee Yan Kong directed and Jackie Chan starred DRAGON BLADE, as well as Soi Cheang Po Shui's SPL 2 were also in the top ten. Even more interestingly, Xu Zheng's LOST IN HONG KONG lingered in the Hong Kong 80s and 90s popular culture but was still very popular. Thus, Hong Kong element actually still served its purpose in Mainland films. This situation for now still has not have any sign of decline. - TIN LIK [ In Production Now/Soon ] Can : Wong Pai Dau Wong Pai d.
