MISCELLANEOUS * (2016/01/06) The Francis Ng Chun Yu and Ronald Cheng Chung Kei starred HOUSE OF WOLVES promoted in Beijing. They gave away lai see and participated in a couplet creation battle. Everyone's New Year wish was for world peace, but Ng Chun Yu wished for everyone to have a second child sooner. Director Vincent Kok Tak Siu said that HOUSE OF WOLVES was a Hong Kong comedy but he hoped that it would be closer to Mainland and not just have jokes that only Hong Kong people would understand. * (2016/01/06) The 92 year old retired female star Li Lihua has become the recipient of the 35th Hong Kong Film Award "Lifetime Achievement Award". Currently living overseas, she will return to Hong Kong to attend the Hong Kong Film Award. Li Lihua started her film career at age 16. With the film THREE CHARMING SMILES (SAM SIU) she became a sensation overnight. After her performance in the 1978 film DREAM OF THE RED CHAMBER (SUN HUNG LAU MUNG) she retired from her almost 40 year career. After almost 130 films she was known the "film industry evergreen". She has won the Golden Horse Best Actress award twice and was one of the first Chinese female star to be in a Hollywood film, Oscar Best Director Frank Borzage's CHINA DOLL. This year the Hong Kong Film Awards will have 60 films in competition and 27 Chinese films from both sides of the Strait. * (2016/01/05) The "Strongest in the Universe" Donnie Yen Chi Tan and Max Zhang Jin starred film IP MAN 3 has strong box office momentum. Since its Christmas Eve release to now its box office has already passed the HK$ 30 million mark. As of New Year's Eve (still in release) its box office has already reached HK$ 31,461,435 and even successfully reached second place in the 2015 top ten highest grossing Hong Kong films. In first place was the Miriam Yeung Chin Wa and Louis Koo Tin Lok starred LITTLE BIG MASTER (NG GOR SIU HAI DIK HAU JEUNG) with HK$ 46,729,492 for the year; in third was the international film star Chow Yun Fat starred FROM VEGAS TO MACAU 2 (DOH SING FUNG WON II) with HK$ 28,407,293. In addition, the highest grossing non Hong Kong films for 2015 were THE AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON, JURASSIC WORD and MINIONS. In 2015 the total Hong Kong box office reached HK$ 1,986,449,811, a rise of 20.6% form 2014. 332 first run films were released in 2015, 59 of which were Hong Kong films and 273 were non Hong Kong films. * (2016/01/04) ATV Program SAM GOR GO KICK host Sam Leong Sing Chi recently got into the film industry and released the program's film version TOURNAMENT. Two nights ago the film held a screening at the Wanchai Art Center. Sam said that in the film he mixed together psychology, Tai Chi, Muay Thai kickboxing and mixed martial art into one. "This time the domestic production isn't just about fighting and killing, it wants to share with the audience something outside blood and violence like mid life crisis. (Would you study domestic production like Donnie Yen Chi Tan's IP MAN 3?) His film is top notch! If we can work together, it would be great if I play the villain and fight against him!" * (2016/01/04) The film IP MAN 3's executive producer Raymond Wong Pak Ming yesterday with actors Max Zhang Jin and Patrick Tam Yiu Man attended an audience appreciation event in Mongkok. Because the film as of yesterday already passed HK$ 40 million at box office. Wong Pak Ming even set his sight at the Chinese film box office champion YOU ARE THE APPLE OF MY EYE and hoped to break its HK$ 61 million box office record. As for the IP MAN 3 performance, Wong Pak Ming was pleased. Because aside from good performance in Hong Kong, the film also broke the Malaysia Chinese film box office record and even became the Singapore daily box office champion and Taiwan opening champion. Although its Mainland release will have to wait until March, he was confident that with overseas success the Mainland box office would not be bad. As for whether he will make IP MAN 4, he said that definitely but he did not want to rush into it. In order to maintain quality, he would have to conduct proper research before making it. If he just randomly made one he might as well not make it. Wong Pak Ming said, "Since we made IP MAN, everyone on the street was making IP MAN. So What? Viewers' eyes are crystal clear." With the film's box office success, Zhang Jin was asked if he asked for a bonus. He said, "That can't be given out randomly, I asked the boss for lai see." He also said that since Wong Pak Ming started as an actor so he took great care of actors, they had a pleasant collaboration. In the film he was unable to fight with boxing champion Mike Tyson. Zhang Jin stated that it was regrettable. He said, "I started training at age 9, but his head and fists are twice the size of mine." Ah Tam also was happy about the film success and even joked that Director Wilson Yip Wai Shun had to shut him in to prepare for IP MAN 4, so yesterday he did not attend. * (2016/01/04) Alex Fong Lik Sun and his girlfriend Stephy Tang Lai Yun yesterday morning attended a certification of appreciation presentation at the Hong Kong Brands and Products Expo. Siu Fong, who has not gotten up so early in a long time, revealed that two nights ago he was busy with his new film ANNIVERSARY (GEI LIM YUT)'s audience appreciation events until 2AM. He also witnessed the film making over HK$ 10 million. However, Stephy did not feel well and stayed at home to rest that day. As for the new film's box office success, Siu Fong said that later a celebration will be held. He even gave special thanks to Bob (Lam Sing Bun) for his loyalty, as he was the host of all 12 audience appreciation events. Will he show off his muscles to thank the audience if the box office continued to climb? Siu Fong said that he only posted muscle photos, even his girlfriend joked that he was an exhibitionist. As for being topless he would leave it to Bob. As for their New Year plans, both said that they will focus on making movies. However Siu Fong felt that in the past he mostly made cheery ensemble films, he hoped to be able to make a film that would require some character study. Stephy this film will also focus on film development. * (2016/01/03) The Donnie Yen Chi Tan and Max Zhang Jin starred IP MAN 3 since opening on Christmas Eve has made HK$ 35 million over 9 days. On New Year's Eve and New Year's Day it crushed STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS to become the single day box office champion for two days in a row. The film will open in the Mainland in March and will probably reach even higher at the box office then. The Alex Fong Lik Sun and Stephy Tang Lai Yun starred ANNIVERSARY (GEI LIM YUT) since opening on New Year's Eve has performed well because the stars and the director promoted and attended audience appreciation events all over. Director Patrick Kong (Yip Lim Sum) yesterday posted a photo at an audience appreciation event on social media. "We just broke through HK$ 10 million, thank you for your support!" * (2016/01/02) Alex Fong Lik Sun and Stephy Tang Lai Yun, Janelle Sing Long Hei and director Patrick Kong (Yip Lim Sum) two nights ago attended a 2016 New Year's Eve countdown to promote their film. Because Siu Fong and Stephy went from being an on screen couple to a real couple, Stephy said that ten years ago they were not close at all. Now they have chemistry. She joked that thus they did not have "much communication" in life. Siu Fong said that when they made their first film they were not dating yet. With the second and third film they kept their romance underground. With this film they have already publicized their romance. He said, "People thought that it was a reality show, they wanted to see if we were really arguing like that in reality!" When they worked together were their salaries higher? Siu Fong said, "I didn't ask this time, I don't know." Stephy said that it would be like promoting the film for her. She even revealed that from this month on she had to attend over 10 audience appreciation events. Speaking of Stephy wanting to go to Iceland, would they like to go there for their honeymoon? Stephy said, "Just for a vacation." Siu Fong looked awkward. Has he not thought about it at all? He said, "No, I am just nervous!" Speaking of New Year presents, Stephy said, "Presents for New Year too? I can't think of what to give!" Siu Fong was asked if he would give a ring in the New Year. He said, "I will talk about it when I do!" Sing Long Hei revealed that this was her first New Year's Eve at work in her career. Coming from Shanghai, she said that she did not have many friends or family in Hong Kong. Thus spending it at work was not bad. Would she consider having a few days of fun? She said, "Probably not, these few days I will be busy with audience appreciation events. In the New Year I will return to Shanghai to spend it with family. (Did you ask them to teach you Cantonese?) Fong Lik Sun did, I couldn't read some lines and he went over them very attentively with me. (Did anything funny happen?) At first I couldn't say beef and my own name, I almost turned them into curse words." * (2016/01/02) The music industry's third report card, the 2015 Commercial Radio Ultimate Music Chart Awards took place last night at the Convention Center. 43 awards were presented. The fan voted "My Favorite Male Singer" and "My Favorite Female Singer" went to James Ng Yip Kwan and Kay Tse On Kay. "My Favorite Song" went to Brother Kwan's ACTUALLY SHE DIDN'T LOVE ME ENOUGH, along with the Rookie Gold Prize he won three awards. "My Favorite Group" went to Supper Moment. They even won with SONG OF HAPPINESS won the Ultimate Top Ten tenth place and Group gold prize. Like Brother Kwan they too became big winners with three awards. Tse On Kay and Joey Yung Cho Yi each won 2.5 awards. Joey has already her tenth Female Singer gold prize. She stated during her speech that starting a career was hard, keeping a career was even harder. For years she has been defending. This award was not easy to win because it was not just asking everyone to like her. She hoped to use her effort to make everyone feel that the applause for her every year was worth it. Rumored to be pregnant, Kay received the Professional Recommendation Female Singer bronze prize. With RASHOMON with Juno Mak Chun Lung she won the "Ultimate Top Ten" sixth place. When she accepted her Female Singer award, host Sammy joked, "Now I am helping her to announce that she truly has good news. Everyone may ask me how am I qualify to help her with the announcement, because I was responsible for this award." Tse On Kay said that she never thought about winning Female Singer award. After ten years in the business, she might be more mature but her passion for singing and the world has not changed. When she accepted the Female Singer award, she stated that she has never thought that she would become everyone's Favorite Female Singer. At the time only because she liked Cantonese songs too much, she wanted to use her own dialect to sing for everyone. She also publicly thanked her husband Louis Cheung Kai Chung, because she not only learned a lot from him but he was also her fan. Whether the days were good or bad, he would treat her like treasure. The first to jump from Rookie gold prize straight to the Male Singer award, Brother Kwan received applause from the entire crowd as encouragement. However he appeared stunned and scared, as he said that he did not know what to say. Earlier when he won the Rookie gold prize he could not stop crying. The event even arranged for a group of children to wear fog up glasses to sing his son in response to last time when he fog up his glasses from crying at the Jade Solid Gold Awards. Last night after he got on the sage he lost all composure. When he got emotional his glasses started to fog up again, no one was certain what he wanted to say. However in the end he did not forget to thank TVB because it had a lot of resources for him to try and experiment. Last night another "crybaby" was Mag Lam Yun Tung. Winning the "Ultimate Top Ten" ninth place with WE ALL GREW UP LIKE THIS, she like Brother Kwan already broke down in the audience. When she cried on the stage she revealed that Brother Kwan's victory made her cry so much that she lost her false eyelashes. She also said that she did not have much self confidence. Luckily those around her never gave up on her. She even gave special thanks to Alfred Hui Ting Hung for pulling her up, which made Hui Ting Hung break down in the audience. Last night the Lyrics award recipient Wyman Wong Wai Man joked that his RASHOMON lyrics was based on songs like HOLDING A GRUDGE, so RASHOMON strictly speaking was a secondary creation. He said, "I changed my own lyrics, I won't sue myself. No one would sue me; but after the copyright law revisions, even if I don't sue myself, the government can jump over me to represent me and sue me. So this year may be the last year I come to Ultimate. If next year I won't be able to come, I hope everyone would miss me. In the future, whether I would be in Pik Uk, Hei Ling Chau or Chi Ma Wan, whether it would be once or twice, I would insist on creating my favorite Cantonese songs." DJs Sammy, Jim, Donald, Sai So while presenting the technical awards also took the chance to have fun at the expense of singers over the copyright law revisions, saying when Alan Tam Wing Lun forgot his lyrics and looked at his cheat sheet, would he be sued? Hacken Lee Hak Kun stuck the lyrics on his luggage, took a photo and posted it online, would he be charged? When C.Y. Leung sang I LIKE YOU and put it online would he violate the law? Before presenting an award Jan Lamb Hoi Fung saluted a Commercial Radio female employee, referring to Winnie Yu Tsung who would attend the Ultimate Song Chart Awards every year. Because earlier Yu Tsung announced that she has retired from the Commercial Radio vice president and director posts started on New Year's Eve, she did not appear again yesterday. Lam Hoi Fung represented the radio station in thanking a Commercial Radio female employee. Because of her, one after another Ultimate moment appeared. The screen then followed with past singer's moments of victory. The last one was Yu Tsung's speech at the 2007 Ultimate Awards. Lamb Hoi Fung continued that this CR female employee would always dream, so CR2 became a station that only played Chinese songs, promote domestic music and release a highly transparent, fair and just pop music chart and one vote per person award show. He said, "Because a CR female employee, she loves to dream, on March 21 1988 she dreamt of the word 'Ultimate'. Since then every January 1st regardless of rain or storm this Ultimate Award show would take place." When Lamb Hoi Fung said that, all the CR2 DJs gave Yu Tsung a standing ovation. When Mak Chun Lung accepted the Ultimate Record award for ADDENDUM, he said that the award was rather heavy. He even called Ronald Ng Lok Sing, Tse On Kay, Endy Chow Kwok Yin and others who participated on the album to the stage to share the joy. Juno said, "I want to thank everyone who like this love story that spans 12 years, thank you very much to the participating singers for giving me so much trust and allow me to tell a story. Thank you to my girlfriend, my cat, my brother and sister in law." Because the entire record has been on the chart, in the end the DJ suggested for him to sing the old song from 12 years ago and the start of the "story" HOLDING A GRUDGE. Yet Juno's performance was a bit off. By the third verse he started to get "shaky". Later he even went a little off key. Anthony Wong Chau Sun last night opened the show. As the 1995 Ultimate Rookie Male Singer gold prize winner he appeared in a black leather jacket and performed John Lennon's classic hit IMAGINE with a live band, much to the surprise of fans. 2015 COMMERCIAL RADIO ULTIMATE MUSIC CHART AWARDS PROFESSIONAL RECOMMENDATIONS, ULTIMATE TOP TEN ULTIMATE SONG: UNCONDITIONAL (Eason Chan Yik Shun) Second: IT'S A SMALL WORLD (Joey Yung Cho Yi, Hacken Lee Hak Kun) Third: THE BEST DEBT (Miriam Yeung Chin Wa) Fourth: THE RIGHT ONE (Hins Cheung King Hin) Fifth: ALL THE RAINY DAYS (Fiona Sit Hoi Kei) Sixth: RASHOMON (Kay Tse On Kay, Juno Mak Chun Lung) Seventh: HOSTAGE (RUBBERBAND) Eighth: DUSK JUKEBOX (Joey Yung Cho Yi featuring Jan Lamb Hoi Fung) Ninth: WE ALL GREW UP LIKE THIS (Mag Lam Yun Tung) Tenth: SONG OF HAPPINESS (Supper Moment) GROUP Gold: Supper Moment Silver: C AllStar Bronze: Dear Jane ULTIMATE RECORD: ADDENDUM (Juno Mak Chun Lung) MY FAVORITE MALE SINGER: James Ng Yip Kwan MY FAVORITE FEMALE SINGER: Kay Tse On Kay MY FAVORITE GROUP: Supper Moment MY FAVORITE SONG: ACTUALLY SHE DIDN'T LOVE ME ENOUGH (James Ng Yip Kwan) SONGWRITER: Ronald Ng Lok Sing LYRICS: Wyman Wong Wai Man PRODUCER: Shu Man SONG ARRANGEMENT: Fung Hong Ming CREATIVE SINGER Gold: Phil Lam Yik Hong Silver: Ivana Wong Yuen Chi Bronze: Pakho Chau ROOKIE Gold: James Ng Yip Kwan Silver: Jude Bronze: Wong Suk Man MALE SINGER Gold: Hins Cheung King Hin Silver: Eason Chan Yik Shun Bronze: Pakho Chau FEMALE SINGER Gold: Joey Yung Cho Yi Silver: Ivana Wong Yuen Chi Bronze: Kay Tse On Kay * (2016/01/01) The Gong Li, Aaron Kwok Fu Sing, Law Chung Him, Xiao Shenyang starred new film THE MONKEY KING 2 (SAI YAU GEI ji SUEN NG HUNG SAM DA BAK GWUT JING) earlier released its latest poster. It featured "the enraged golden monkey strikes the White Bone Spirit" as a salute to the Chinese comic strip master Mr. Zhao Hongben. Gong Li's "Demon Queen in White" also appeared for the first time on the poster. Gong Li in the new film played the "Demon Queen" White Bone Spirit, who led various demons to attack the Venerable Tang Monk and his disciples. As the villain in the film, her costume has always been kept under wrap. In the latest poster, Gong Li finally appeared with a silver horned crown and costume. With self confidence she lured Sun Wukong and others to act, her dominant ways made people look forward her battles against the quartet. The team made what was special about the White Bone Spirit stand out from the original work's foundation, jumping from a mountain village minor demon to a "demon queen". With her strong presence Gong Li's performance transformed the character in a great demon queen in the film. The new poster was based on Zhao Hongben's 1962 classic illustration SUN WUKONG THRICE STRUCK THE WHITE BONE SPIRIT. Sun Wukong Kwok Fu Sing raised his staff in pursuit of Gong Li. Piggy Xiao Shenyang and the Sand Monk Law Chung Him followed. On the run in the original, the White Bone Spirit turned into a self confident Demon Queen. Director Soi Cheang Po Shui said, "The quartet teams up to catch demons is an image that everyone in the country knows and are the most familiar with. I chose to bring back this classic to restore the nostalgia that we grew up with." * (2016/01/01) Alex Fong Lik Sun, Stephy Tang Lai Yun and director Patrick Kong (Yip Lim Sum) two nights ago attended the film ANNIVERSARY (GEI LIM YUT)'s exchange forum in Causeway Bay, around 40 to 50 fans attended. The trio even tried special beverages. The reporters asked Siu Fong and Stephy for a glass exchange wedding toast, but they were only willing to comply with a simple toast. Stephy said that she had to maintain her lady image because in the film she was too sassy. She was worried that the audience would think that she would really yell at Siu Fong like that in real life. She said, "Arguments kill a lot of cells, so I won't do that." Siu Fong also said that they normally would not argue because arguments hurt the relationship and cells, but when they finished their argument scenes the crew would give him a pat on his shoulder to comfort him. They thought that they really argued. Siu Fong revealed that lately they went to the Mainland for audience appreciation events. "Hong Kong held advanced screenings from the 24th to the 27th, because of the overwhelming response they were extended from the 28th to the 30ths. The box office of those few days reached HK$ 6 million. For its official release on the 31st, the number of cinemas would double. I hope it will be able to pass HK$ 10 million. (IP MAN 3 is very strong at the box office.) I don't have any pressure. Their strength is their problem. They can pass HK$ 100 million, we are already very happy with passing HK$ 10 million. Just (Donnie) Yen Chi Tan's salary is already more than our box office, so it's normal. When we win word of mouth we already treat it like a victory> " Siu Fong also said that this was the fourth installment of their film series. He would like the most to break the film L FOR LOVE L FOR LIES (NGOR DIK JUI OI)'s HK$ 12 million box office record. Speaking of another strong rival STAR WARS Episode 7, he joked, "We fight like 'Mars crashes into Earth', we have STAR WARS elements. We then fight physically, which also has IP MAN elements. We also have a lot of romantic elements. I hope everyone would support us." * (2015/12/31) Dominic Ho Ho Man and Connie Man Hoi Ling starred in the new film THE GIGOLO 2 (NGAP WONG 2). The actors' figures are just as attractive. The perfect body to the legendary duck king Ho Ho Man was an important "money making tool". Thus he always worked out to stay in shape. When he was working out at a park he suddenly went topless and drew attention from many pedestrians. Man Hoi Ling had dessert for her eyes as she kept on scoping Ho Ho Man's chest. "Ho Ho Man is in great shape, tall, cool and fit. He is very easy on the eyes. Working with him on a bed scene I have a special sense of security!" Facing Ho Ho Man's chest, she also showed off her career line in retaliation. Ho Ho Man joked, "Actually working out is my interest. In order to show an even better side in the film, I would have no distraction from showing my best to the audience." [ BLAH OF THE WEEK ] Columns, Reviews, Interviews 1. APPLE DAILY, JANUARY 5 2016, SI AND NONSENSE FACED WITH A VARIETY OF COLLAPSE, DO YOU STILL KNOW HOW TO GET MAD? 2016 just started for a few days. I just returned home from the joy of New Year's Eve camping trip. Before I had the chance to put down the gear, I saw a sky full of bad news: the boss of the Mainland banned book publisher Causeway Bay Books Lee Bo mysteriously vanished. His Home Return Permit was at home but he was able to call home from Shenzhen, strangely "reporting his safety" in Mainland. His wife after a day of hesitation decided to call the police to tell the world, after getting the cold shoulder from the Hong Kong government the Chief Executive held a press conference. The wife at night was suddenly rumored to have closed the case. What happened?! WTF, living in this crazy place you really cannot get a second to stop and breathe. Honestly, this is serious. The safety and the security that we have always thought we had were only left with an empty shell a year ago, but in terms of personal safety, there still was a general idea in our minds. We would naively think that as long as we did not step foot in certain areas, as long as we remained in Hong Kong, nothing so outrageous would "probably" happen as Hong Kong laws would still be able to provide you with protection in the least. Actually now, that "probably was not as certain as it used to be. The Reaction of the Mass Was The Saddest Part If the news reports were true, a person can mysteriously vanish in Hong Kong; no, everyone in an entire company can vanish en masse. Few Hong Kong people of our generation would have predicted that this day would arrive so soon. Of course, a variety of theories and speculations could be heard around town. Some said that it might not necessarily be the national machine in operation, some debated that it might be running away from debts or patronizing prostitutes. Great, let's try to be more "moderate" and take a hundred steps back to catch a glimpse. Yet, when the entire bookstore sold nothing but banned books and all five shareholders and employees vanished one by one? That would be quite a coincidence! It's too incredible. Then the news came of the government's ambiguous attitude early on, Global Times' article that vehemently denied the accusations (yet at the same time criticizing the bookstore for poisoning the public), to today the Chief Executive's press conference to display his art of nonspeak in an attempt to reassure the public. With a variety of suspicious points, even the more moderate would have difficulty with not being suspicious. None of us are national affair experts, but just with the instinct of a Hong Kong citizen no one would be convinced with the government's "attaching great importance" and "has been following up" on the matter. As someone whose home is here, I would rather that the entire matter truly be excessive rendering, actually we were collectively oversensitive, that there is actually more to the story, actually two days after Li Bo would appear to explain that he only went on vacation without telling his family. I would rather we are wrong, which is a little better than to witness our whole system collapse to the point of absolute ruin. I wish it is so, but I am not holding my breath. The saddest part of the whole thing is not the matter itself but the reaction of the masses. With such a shocking news item, I guess that half of Hong Kong would have never heard of it. The other 20 to 30% may know but feel it is no big deal. It would only be a casual topic of conversation for them, after which they would return to life as normal since they were not the ones who were taken away. This is truly the saddest part of Hong Kong, not the impotence of the government but our own indifference as we only clear our own driveway. Absolutely Cannot Become The Norm The remainder, the ones who still pay close attention, must be self vigilant. As you know, the first time when something so absurd happens, the crowd would be surprise, angry, and loud; then, by the third or fourth time, people start to become numb, start to get used to it, start to become too lazy to care. How many people are locked up, placed under house arrest or disappear in the Mainland every year? Probably in tens of thousands. Yet aside from information blackout, how many of those who know still feel like they must resist? This is not where Hong Kong is heading toward? Yet we ourselves are disappointing, not united, and love to criticize and attack our own, we cannot blame others for not being able to withstand a single blow. When we fight among ourselves, we fall right into their trap. Loose sand is the easiest to handle, scattering as soon as the wind blows; gradually we would feel we are being isolated, feeling that even speaking up is useless; so you give up and back out one by one on your own. No matter how bad or absurd the condition is, when we are used to it it is fine. When we are used to it we can pretend we do not see it, since we cannot change much anyway, right? In recent years I have learned to try to keep quiet, but ultimately I am still not there yet. My angry at the world DNA would still occasionally show itself, on whichever day I lack the will power it would take effect. I would be angry and tired, just like today. Yet after the mood passes, I still have to keep going since I have no other choice. I despise the most people who are demanding of others but lax on themselves. They do not build anything but they criticize and question everything other people are doing, who are you anyway? Just mind your own business already. Take a look at that German student who quietly goes to the library and draw a poster, explains to every passerby the details of the Li Bo incident to let foreigners know about the crisis that Hong Kong is facing. The media there gradually pay attention and report on it. She too admits that this type of behavior may be somewhat idiotic or even meaningless, but she still feels it needs to be done. This is the power of one, this is keeping on going. Please, when faced with collapse, no matter how tired you are, you should never get used to it. Keep trying, keeping working, it is the only way. - Denise Ho Wan Si A Wild Mushroom, A Free Person Who Lives On the Fridges of Show Business Started with Music, but Accidentally Through Creativity and Life See The possibilities of life. "Hope" and "Justice" Are My Beliefs 2. MING PAO DAILY, JANUARY 3 2016, FILM WORDS A YEAR OF COMPETITION WITH SUCCESS FOR BOTH EAST AND WEST In 2015 the film world battled in the open and in secret. Chinese films everywhere had variety. The Mainland box office continued to make great strides, which could be considered as "Eastern Achievement". Hollywood maintained "Western success" as the American market remained first in the world. Its international market occupation rate left Chinese films in the dust. The STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS overwhelming effect at the end of the year proved its dominance. Although the Hong Kong film industry was more light and less busy, fortunately it had both drama and action, as well as films that dared to try. In addition the Hong Kong style had a huge influence on the thriving Mainland film market. The Chinese film box office record breaking MONSTER HUNT was Hong Kong creator driven. More and more Chinese filmmakers have gone international. The James Wan directed Hollywood film FAST AND FURIOUS 7 was a hit everywhere, which was no longer a rare feat. Many Special Asian Films Among last year's first run foreign and Chinese films in Hong Kong, I felt ten of each were excellent or special. They are listed in the order of release. For foreign films, 1 BOYHOOD, 2 CLOUD OF SILS MARIA, 3 BIRDMAN, 4 THE IMITATION GAME, 5 WILD TALES, 6 MAD MAX: FURY ROAD, 7 BOYCHOIR, 8 THE MARTIAN, 9 SICARIO and 10 POINT BREAK. For Chinese films: 1 Peter Chan Ho Sun's DEAREST, 2 Lou Ye's MASSAGE, 3 Herman Yau Lai To's SARA (CHOR GEI), 4 Daniel Lee Yan Kong's DRAGON BLADE (TIN JEUNG HUNG SI), 5 Raman Hui Sing Ngai's MONSTER HUNT, 6 Hou Hsiao-Hsien's THE ASSASSIN, 7 Adam Wong Sau Ping's SHE REMEMBERS, HE FORGETS (NA YUT TIN NGOR MOON WUI FEI), 8 Nick Cheung Ka Fai's KEEPER OF DARKNESS (TOR DEI KUI MOR YUN), 9, Philip Yung Chi Kwong's PORT OF CALL (DAP HUET CHUM MUI) and 10 TEN YEARS. Among Mainland directors' films I did not choose Jia Zhangke's MOUNTAINS MAY DEPART because Lou Ye's MASSAGE about a blind massage parlor was even more excellent. Actually the third part of Wang Xiaoshuai's Cultural Revolution trilogy RED AMNESIA was also very outstanding, but I was uncertain whether it was officially released. As for the Jackie Chan starred Western Territory war film DRAGON BLADE, it was more difficult than Tsui Hark's THE TAKING OF TIGER MOUNTAIN as its performance was decent. Five young Hong Kong directors each shot a part of TEN YEARS, which was very anti-Communist. Daring to promote "Localism" and even "Hong Kong Independence", it was a wonderful film that was full of politic controversy. In addition, Taiwan girl film OUR TIMES was very popular, Hong Kong film LITTLE BIG MASTER (NG GOR SIU HAI DIK HAU JEUNG) was a Hong Kong hit. The Indian film PK, the Japanese film OUR LITTLE SISTER, the Korean films ODE TO MY FATHER and ASSASSINATION were among the numerous special Asian films that were released in Hong Kong last year. ANNIVERSARY: Detailed And Solid As for New Year's new films, their draw could not compare to the Christmas blockbusters STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS and IP MAN 3. Fortunately Hong Kong film ANNIVERSARY (GEI LIM YUT) opened hot and entertaining made. Patrick Kong (Yip Lim Sum) around ten years ago wrote and directed the Alex Fong Lik Sun and Stephy Tang Lai Yun starred romantic comedy MARRIAGE WITH A FOOL (DUK GA SI OI), which became a hit. After that he was highly produced to the point of becoming excessive. Recently he has improved. His earlier release RETURN OF THE CUCKOO (SUP YUET CHOR NG DIK YUET GUONG) had love, loyalty and popularity. ANNIVERSARY is even more detailed and solid, fortunately heading toward maturity. Fong Lik Sun and Tang Lai Yun play a loving married couple of ten years, yet due to work and mood problems they brew up a cold war in which they suspect each other. The film depicts everyday details that are solid, fitting with rich extensions. Both the acting and the directing are great, Tang Li Yun in particular brings to life the career "Hong Kong woman"'s overcoming feminine might. Among the numerous co-stars, Rachel Lee Lai Chun as the mother remains pretty, Louis Cheung Kai Chung and Leila Tong Ning as the good couple is touching and tear jerking. New comer Janelle Sing Long Hei as the magic girl is very lively. Other support characters are rich and colorful as well. (three and a half out of five star) THE BOY AND THE BEAST: Fun Throughout The Mamoru Hosoda directed animated THE BOY AND THE BEAST was a hit in Japan, few notice it in Hong Kong. Actually it has action, comedy, mystery and the supernatural. In the film the world of humans and monsters both exist in Tokyo. A human kid enters the strange land to learn martial arts and the beast is the most concerned with the darkness in humans. Fun throughout, the film also has allegory of human nature. (three out of five star) - SHEK KEI 3. APPLE DAILY, JANUARY 2 2016, I CAME FOR OTHER PEOPLE'S FUN LOOKING BACK AT 2015: WORKING HOLIDAY Since spending over two months in Hawaii at the end of 2014, I got a huge revelation: life cannot be completely about work. If a lifetime lasts eighty years, I have already passed the halfway mark. This is the time to pay more attention to my own emotional needs. My company colleagues and investors may feel that I actually do not spend much energy on work. No matter what though, at that time the calling I got was -- I should play even crazier. So I made my originally constantly in the air, working while traveling "half working holiday" format even more systematic to turn into my personal "working holiday". In other words, going overseas at anytime was permitted as long as 1/3 of the time on the trip was spent on handling work. Thoroughly Merge Work And Life After switching to a smart phone in Hawaii, it was much more convenient. For different projects with different colleagues, I formed a workgroup and I was able to handle the progress on text message or WhatsApp; for different versions of stories or scripts, even trailer editing, I would watch them on the iPad. No matter where I went, as long as I had a wifi router work would not be hindered. The only problem was the time difference, but to my colleagues I thought this was not much of a problem either. Because when I was in Hong Kong I would often give them work orders in the middle of the night. Now only the time zone was changed, they probably would not be too surprised to get stuff from me (This......of course was only my own wishful thinking). Thus for most of the winter I would ski in Niseko. At the same time I also participated in several English language productions as a producer, including the shot in New York YOU WERE NEVER HERE and BORDER CROSSING (in July I was celebrate my father's belated birthday in New York, I still made it to watch the first cut. I really felt like work and life were thoroughly mixed together), APPRENTICE that was shot in Singapore and Australia, and DISMISSED that was shot in Los Angeles. Learning the American Production System This type of long distance participation has taught me a lot. Ultimately the American production system was different from Hong Kong. Several years ago a film company asked me to make an English film, but I have always had a concern. Many elders who were much more talented and experienced than me suffered from the inability to adapt when they made their first English film. The results wre slightly lower than their usual creative quality. Thus I still turned it down. Later by chance I had a chance to participate in several English film's launch and investment. Thus I decided to learn their system as a producer. Participating in these several films indeed was a great attempt that also permitted my workshop to give birth to another specialty production horror film brand MAKING HORROR. Between trips, every time I returned to Hong Kong I would try to participate in my friends' weekly bicycle meeting and at the same time even attend Thai kickboxing and fitness training. To me in recent years sports and work have been just as important. Regrettable, I had no way to return to Hawaii again in the summer and continue my surfing training. After starting my small plane pilot lessons, although I have completed the classroom training I was never able to make time to go to Australia for the actual flight training. My long time collaborator, screenwriter Luk Yee Sum made her directing debut with her script LAZY HAZY CRAZY (TUNG BAN TUNG HOK). In March she took the Hong Kong Asia Film Financing Forum grand prize and the iQiyi special selection prize. With limited resources and in an extremely short time period she was able to finish this film, which truly was not an easy challenge. In particular she chose a controversial subject and an even more controversial angle to shoot it. As for publishing, the collaboration that has been brewing for years with b.wing, the illustrated ONE DAY OF IBRAHIM finally was done. The Present Me Is Even More Comfortable Originally I planned to release a script collection at the Book Fair in July, but due to my personality I made changes after changes. (Although no one would understand why the editing would take so long. Were the films not already made, what else in the script needed to be changes? Right, the scripts did not, but the script collection was something that I have always wanted to publish. Thus I paid a lot of attention on the consumer experience from reading. I hope to be able to make it as comfortable as possible. Because the script format originally was not made for the average reader to read, I had to pay even more attention so readers could easily get into it). Thank you to the CUP publishing colleagues and assistance for their perseverance and effort. Although it arrived late, it was still able to become a book in early 2016. This probably was a summation of a stage in my life, I hope readers would like it. 2015 rapidly passed amid the hectic and the fun, I experienced different stages of life and naturally had different ideas. To the hurry in the past, the present me instead felt that this "working holiday" work format was even more comfortable. I hope to be able to keep it going. Of course, I have to have the effort and the coordination from my company colleagues. That's right, the target audience was this article actually is a speech for my company colleagues. Everyone please pay attention. - Pang Ho Cheung Ancestors from Panyu, born in Kwun Tong. A Virgo with writer, screen writer, film producer, actor and artist all in one. TA KUNG PAO, JANUARY 1 2016, FILM AND TELEVISION MARKET TREND 2015 BOX OFFICE INCREASE IS GOOD NEWS With another year gone by, I wish everyone a Happy New Year. Last year belonged to Hollywood blockbusters. The only Chinese film to be in the top ten was only LITTLE BIG MASTER. Even DORAEMON was slightly better, which of course was related to the film's Lunar New Year release and the famous voice work Lam Po Chuen's passing. For Chinese film box office, in first place of course was LITTLE BIG MASTER; Taiwan film OUR TIMES made HK$ 44.53 million in second place (eleventh for the year overall); the Lunar New Year film FROM VEGAS TO MACAU 2 (DOH SING FUNG WON 2) made HK$ 28.4 million in third place (twentieth overall); another Lunar New Year film 12 GOLDEN DUCKS (12 GUM NGAP) made HK$ 24.3 million in fourth place (twenty second overall); last week's release IP MAN 3 made HK$ 20.5 million in fifth place (twenty fourth overall); TRIUMPH IN THE SKIES made HK$ 20.31 million in sixth place (twenty fifth overall); SARA (CHOR GEI) made HK$ 17.42 million in seventh place (thirtieth overall); KEEPER OF DARKNESS (TOR DEI KUI MOR YUN) made HK$ 17.36 million in eighth place (thirty first overall); HELIOS (CHET DOH) made HK$ 16.14 million in ninth place (thirty third overall); SPL 2 (SAT POR LONG II) made HK$ 13.41 million in tenth place (thirty seventh overall). More about that next week. - LAM KAM BO 5. TA KUNG PAO, DECEMBER 31 2015, ASIAN FILMS AUTHORIZED ROMANTIC TUSSLE: ANNIVERSARY ANNIVERSARY (GEI LIM YUT) was the rather productive this year Patrick Kong (Yip Lim Sum)'s final film in 2015. It was also the first time Alex Fong Lik Sun and Stephy Tang Lai Yun playing husband and wife after years of underground romance and their 2012 romance revelation. Viewers more or less went with the interest to watch their romantic tussle. - LAU WAI LAM Tang Lai Yun's character was still called Chung Ka Bo, Fong Lik Sun this time was named Wong Chi Keung. Ah Bo and Ah Keung have been married for ten years. Ah Bo is a wedding planner, Ah Keung is a real estate agent but has his own little company. Ah Bo's family is more complicated. Ah Bo is the daughter of a mistress. Her mother (Rachel Lee Lai Chun) operates a fashion store in a lackadaisical matter. Her biological father (David Siu Chung Hung) suddenly appears after disappearing for over a decade. Ah Keung is at a disadvantage in this marriage, but he cheated early in the marriage (MARRIAGE WITH A FOOL (DUK GA SI OI) story). Ah Keung admitted his mistake and saved the marriage. Now their relationship is again fractured, as the couple sees each other flirting with the opposite sex the marriage is on the edge of divorce. Ah Bo's good friend Ah Man (Leila Tong Ning) has brain cancer, Ah Man's husband (Louis Cheung Kai Chung) is also Ah Keung's buddy. As others are in a life and death situation, would Ah Keung and Ah Bo decide to keep going with each other? Yip Lim Sum through Wai Ka Fai's GREED OF MAN (DAI SI DOI) re-run fever brought together the on screen couple of Siu Chung Hung and Lee Lai Chun again. Actually they had a bed scene in the category III film GIRL UNBUTTONED (BUT KAU NAU DIK NUI HAI) as well. Tong Ning often plays Tang Lai Yun's close friend in Yip Lim Sum films. Playing her husband this time, Cheung Kai Chung was her co-star in their child star days. However they have to wait until Cheung Kai Chung's popularity rise to be able to feel that he matches up with Tong Ning naturally, proving that we are all snobs. Cheung Kai Chung sobs in a close up shot that has neither editing nor movement. He does not shake or bang his head, as he cries like a child that the parents abandon. Tong Ning also has a tragic scene when she records a final video message to her daughter. In comparison she cries with too much ease. In addition should she not be forcing a smile in this type of video? How To Make A Mean Girl The film wants to use Tong Ning and Cheung Kai Chung's story to drive Ah Bo and Ah Keung into "holding on to what you got". Yip Lim Sum in RETURN OF CUCKOO (SUP YUET CHOR NG DIK YUET GUONG) less than two months ago also had this type of terminal illness, dying too soon disaster like ideas. Yip Lim Sum relies too much on melodramatic tragedy to drive his stories. Tong Ning has brain cancer, in RETURN Chor Gor Gor also had to have a brain operation and might die or lose his memory from it. Thus he and Kwan Ho were driven to overlook what the world thought was taboo and officially started their romance, which also brought a sharp curve to the ending for the film (ANNIVERSARY also has a surprise ending). To go even further back, LOVE IS NOT ALL AROUND (SUP FUN OI) also had a supporting character die early from brain cancer. Many online feel Tang Lai Yun is a representative of "Hong Kong woman". In their eyes, she becomes greedy and snobbish just because she looks pretty. She thinks her boyfriend is a disappointment, sassy but thinks that her boyfriend is not treating her well enough. GOLDEN BROTHER (NAM YUN NG HOR YI KUNG) utilizes her to play the gold digging girlfriend who dumped Bosco Wong Chung Chak, which satisfies this image on a certain level. ANNIVERSARY's Ah Bo also has a similar personality, but in the beginning of the film she had to fend for herself while growing up and explained her bullying ways. Although it makes sense, people still are not comfortable with it. From Ah Keung's mouth, Ah Bo puts work above everything else. Yet her behavior seems to be like authority worship. She is holding on to her "job" tightly (afraid of being fired or losing the chance at a promotion) more than being passionate about work. She ruthlessly treats her family, Ah Keung and his family, her subordinates, but with her boss and clients she is submissive and smiles warmly. Hard to get along with is Ah Bo's character configuration, but the result is the villain quality of "worshipping higher ups and stepping on the lower downs". Ah Keung on the surface is weaker, but from another angle he is the real authority. With a personality like Ah Bo, others would only tolerate her. Ah Keung who she has a hold over is the one would truly understand and love her. Her own close friend is dead, Ah Bo's loneliness would be even more obvious. However the film may not advocate "the strong is the weak", because the film focuses on Ah Keung getting back his wife more than Ah Bo holding on to her husband. High Level Middle Class Ah Bo is as gentle as a lamb with her boss. Ah Bo does not dare to take Christmas off to ski in Switzerland with Ah Keung because her boss wants to take off and go to ski in Switzerland with her husband. In SHE REMEMBERS, HE FORGETS (NA YUT TIN NGOR MOON WUI FEI), Miriam Yeung Chin Wa and Jan Lamb Hoi Fung also argued over taking time off for a vacation. This seems to be a frequently seen situation with Hong Kong's "DINK" (Dual Income, No Kid) family, but my view is that this type of story reflects Hong Kong's middle class being at an even higher level than the ones in the 80s and the 90s. Although travel was popular back then too, in SHE and ANNIVERSARY overseas vacations become ways to save marriages. Her fear of crossing her boss and thus not taking time off means that she is unwilling to work at saving her marriage. When the film turns non essential spending into a necessity and connects it with family value, this is what I refer to as even higher "middle class" phenomenon. However Ah Keung has his own business and should have more free time. The film opens around Mid Autumn Festival 2015, the year is coming to a close. Ah Keung already says in the beginning of the film that business has been slim. Reality indeed was that way. Since the middle of the year in Hong Kong property market, due to gradually rising chances of interest rate hike in the U.S. buyers have been cautious about getting into the market. They want to buy cheap but most sellers are unwilling to slash prices. Thus although property prices did not drastically fall, deals were brutally few. Without any sale, real estate agents had no commission to make. Stepping into 2016, the silence of the property market is even louder. Since there is no market to develop, why must Ah Keung ski during Christmas? Is Switzerland the only place with snow on Christmas? The film however just pushes all the responsibility onto Ah Bo. Middle Aged Actress Desperately Needs Breakthrough I am reminded of Yeung Chin Wa, because Tang Lai Yun in ANNIVERSARY officially steps into the "middle aged woman" identity. The film sets Ah Bo's age at 34, two years older than Tang Lai Yun's actual age. Her appearance and figure are not longer young. LOVE IN A PUFF (JI MING YU CHUN GIU) made "actress" Yeung Chin Wa finally surpass "singer" Yeung Chin Wa. Since then she can truly live up to the title of the female lead, to gradually reach LITTLE BIG MASTER (NG GOR SIU HAI DIK HAU JEUNG) and SHE REMEMBERS, HE FORGETS. When she made LOVE IN A PUFF at 35, Yu Chun Giu was self aware of her age. The shot rarely covered up her fading youth, but due to her likable personality viewers were comfortable with her older woman young man romance with Shawn Yue Man Lok. Like ANNIVERSARY's Ah Bo, this type of snobbish and spoiled middle aged Hong Kong woman whose is aging and beauty is fading is okay to mess around with but not marriage material. If Tang Lai Yun wants to take another step further in film and television, she also needs a character like Yu Chun Giu. However since LOVE DETECTIVE (MOOT NUI SUN TAM)'s Ivana Wong Yuen Chi, I feel Yip Lim Sum and his team probably will not be able to write one out. In addition Tang Lai Yun and Fong Lik Sun's romance although is widely accepted, the result is that she has a very hard time to work a deep silver screen romance with other male stars. As for Yip Lim Sum, the center of ANNIVERSARY remains whether an old couple should keep their marriage. However it still has his trademark "cheating" element. Seemingly if he keeps going, he will reach the territory of "husband and wife have to have their own fun in order to endure." - HUNG KWONG 5. TA KUNG PAO, DECEMBER 31 2015, LIGHT SHADOW PATH TEN YEARS OF FRESH WAVE The Art Development Council organized 10th Fresh Wave short film competition has already come to an end. Earlier an award presentation took place. The film quality was decent. The grand prize went to the student division's CONDITIONED (YEUK NAM). Fresh Wave's activities mainly are the short film competition and the international short film festival. Its short film competition is the most different from others. The organizers not only provide participants with resource assistance but also arrange for experienced filmmakers to help and train. Participants have to make a 30 minute maximum short film. The award winners will be openly screened, as the idea is to cultivate film talent. Fresh Wave's founder is director Mr. Johnnie To Kei Fung. For ten years he spared no effort in cultivating new comers. Many participants have already joined the film industry and performed very ideally. Starting next year, Fresh Wave will leave the ADC to become a non government organization and continue to cultivate the new spouts of film. Fresh Wave would often invite famous filmmakers to Hong Kong for the international short film festival opening ceremony and host the "master exchange forum". This year's guest was BOUNCE KO GALS' director Masato Harada. Young people who could cherish the master's sharing of his experience would have an experience that they could not be without. For example this year's 10th anniversary award ceremony the guests gave young filmmakers some food for thought. This time the award ceremony invited director Hou Hsiao-Hsien and several members of the jury including Professor of Film and Media History at Birkbeck, University of London, Ian Christie, Tokyo Filmex program director Mr. Shozo Ichiyama and Oscar Best Documentary Short Subject Award winner director Ruby Yang. The host asked Mr. Shozo Ichiyama what was considered creativity. Mr. Ichiyama said that was "never before seen". As a film festival program director, Mr. Ichiyama's film selection method was just that simple, "different from others" was the focus. When Professor Ian Christie presented the Best Screenplay award, the host asked how many films has he seen. The professor said that he has watched so many that he forgot how many. The host also asked what was a screenplay. The Professor said that the screenplay was very important during a film production, after which everyone would forget the sreenplay. Like the bamboo scaffolding that could be seen everywhere in Hong Kong, when the building was completed the bamboo scaffolding would have no use. The professor used humor to describe the function of a screenplay. The most memorable was the conversation with director Hou Hsiao-Hsien. The host asked him how to become a good director. He said that the director has to be interested in everything and everyone in life, not to be interested during the film production but be interested in everyday life. He has read many wuxia novels and books since childhood, after reading a lot he has his own view. Slowly he is able to take subjects from reality to make movies from. Actually Director Hou in his youth lived near Cheng Huang Temple, saw many different people and had a deep understanding of people since childhood. The ten years old Fresh Wave could be said as a filmmaker's cradle, we look forward it becoming hotter and brighter in the next ten years. - TIN LIK [ In Production Now/Soon ] MRS. K d.
