MISCELLANEOUS * (2013/11/20) For the film RIGOR MORTIS, Nina Paw Hee Ching yesterday talked about her experience with director Juno Mak Chun Lung on the radio. Sister Paw felt that Juno was very real and loved his actors. Finally as soon as she heard his voice tears could not help but flow. She even revealed that she and Kent Cheng Juk Si have worked together for years. When she won the Hong Kong Film Awards, he called to congratulate her and she was very touched. * (2013/11/20) TVB celebrated its 46th anniversary last night at its Tseung Kwan O Television City. 400 artists displayed their passion and gave away mad prizes, which reached HK$ 7 million to heat up the atmosphere. In addition artists voted for their television Best Actor Kenneth Ma Kwok Ming and Best Actress Krystal Tin Yui Nei to create some melodrama. TVB even gave away warmth, stating that if the show's rating reached 30 points it would donate HK$ 3 million to 7 charity organizations, and another 100,000 for each extra point. The rare seen ensemble in recent years was to combat the turn off television protest, as the station used every trick to grab ratings. On TVB anniversary night, the station could care less about the protesters who were tossing offerings for the dead outside Television City. Last night was the hottest anniversary scene in recent years to show the station's force. The program from the beginning to the end had different segments gave away money and prizes like TVB stocks, European vehicles, diamond jewelry, watches, Mainland real estate, gold, half a million music video production budget and cash. All actors had a chance to win. Oscar Leung Lit Wai, Dickson Wong, Helen Ng Heung Lun, Raymond Lam Fung, Oil Chan Hong Kin, Super Girls' Yanny Chan Wing Yan and Dolby Kwan Ho Yeung all won. Foreign artist Kwok ? Wing even won the HK$800,000 Huizhou home. This year's performances were more thoughtful, with less cake and cream tossing comedy. Artists switched to perform magic. The young actors performed "floating dance" looked hard. Alan Tam Wing Lun led a group of singers in a cheery performance. From the program rundown, almost every segment had an ensemble as a display of strength. This year added the Anniversary Award preview, as 400 artists voted for their television Best Actor, Best Actor and Actor with the Most substance. Linda Chung Ka Yun and Tin Yui Nei became the finale two. Tin Yui Nei admitted that because she was lucky with people she won. When she tearfully accepted the award all the artists gave a standing ovation, which was quite melodramatic. Best Actor final two were Ma Kwok Ming and Wayne Lai Yiu Cheung. Ma Kwok Ming defeated the 3 time television Best Actor Lai Yiu Cheung. Helena Law Lan as expected won the actor with the most substance. Nat Chan Pak Cheung stated that if the anniversary show only had two to three point rating he would kneel and die. He also said that if the rating reached 30 points, TVB would donate 3 million to charity. For days TVB did not respond, then last night it suddenly announced that if rating reached 30 points it would donate 3 million to 7 charity organizations, and for each additional point it would donate another 100,000. This "save Ah Lek from kneeling" mission had a good intention. Some online revealed that some of the charity organization employees were notified and reminded to turn on their television to support the show, so the organizations would receive donations. Some online responded that they were watching the show because they wanted TVB to donate more money. However, when the show called a lucky viewer with a car prize, the viewer was obviously lost, claimed that he was at dinner and could not hear the host's question clearly. With a credit card prize, the first viewer's number went to voice mail. People speculated whether his television was turned off. Tin Yui Nei was asked if her confidence to win Best Actress was increased. She said, "In the past no one would ask even when I was nominated, but I feel this time I have some chance. Hubby (Chapman) To Man Jat even congratulated me and expressed his love in group. The most touching was other artists' standing ovation and getting everyone's support." Ma Kwok Ming said that perhaps due to his training class background, his colleagues gave him sympathy votes. Thus his confidence for Best Actor did not increase. He said, "Ultimately viewers and artists' points of viewers are different. However I am truly touched to have colleague support." Tin Yui Nei revealed that she also voted for Ma Kwok Ming, but actually Ma Kwok Ming forgot to vote. TVB anniversary show opened with its own record company. Its two top stars Alfred Hui Kin Ting and Fred Cheng sang while leading everyone on a tour of Television City. Performers included Grace Wong Kwan Hing, Ronald Law Kwan Moon, Hubert Wu Hung Kwan, Jinny Ng Yeuk Hei and others, with top star Chung Ka Yun appeared in the finale. Last night few singers attended, as it was completely a party with TVB's own people. INBOUND MARRIAGE had Wong Kwong Leung singing AGE LIKE SONG and Louis Cheung Kai Chung and Corinna Chamberlain (Chan Ming Yun) performing PHYSICAL. However they were no match for Siu Bo (Chen Jiajia)'s Madonna costume. She even grabbed Bosco Wong Chung Chak for her performance and felt him up for atmosphere. In another segment muscle men like Otto Chan Chi Kin, Nathan Ngai and others appeared with fighter looks. "Heavyweight" Louis Yuen Siu Cheung appeared topless. Ng Yip Kwan, Anthony Ho Yuen Tung hit him on the belly, chest, back, arm and cheek for music. His chest was all red as they won a lot of applause. This creative performance has been around foreign sites long ago and again has become TVB research. Moses Chan Ho's wife Aimee Chan Yun Mei was pregnant and remained at home to watch the television. Chan Ho last night performed "giving birth" as a magician appeared from his "belly", but it was nothing new. On the other hand the magician later made Lai Yiu Chung and Grace Chan Hoi Lam appear in a mid air transparent balloon. Another magician Louis Yan "chopped up" Myolie Wu Hung Yi, which was more attractive. Wu Hung Yi's upper body sat on a table while her lower body did a lap around the stage to the surprise of many. Charmaine Sheh Si Man has repeatedly stated that she will participate in the anniversary show after two years and ask everyone not to turn off their television. Yet last night she was absent due to illness. Her manager explained that Ah Sheh started to feel pain and numbness in her right arm on the 15th. The doctor found several nerves under pressure between discs. She needed several physical therapy treatments in a week. She did not feel well so she did not attend. Tavia Yeung Yi was also absent. Lam Fung participated in the "floating dance" and had to perform several very hard moves in mid air. A week ago he just had a minor appendix surgery. Chin Kar Lok substituted for him in the last minute. He said, "I was afraid of contacting the wound so I couldn't perform any move that was too difficult. I could dance, as long as I had pain killers it was on problem. Kar Lok was also amazing." As for the protest outside, he felt that everyone had the freedom of speech and express their stance. * (2013/11/20) Chang Chen two nights ago held a wedding party with his wife Ann Zhuang. They even gave guests a music box with the thoughtful engraving of "Getting Together is Destiny, Walking Together is Happiness - Yu, Chen". Former rumored girlfriend Shu Qi again wished the newlyweds well online. Yesterday some of the photos from the banquet were revealed. The newlyweds presented the wedding bouquet to Shu Qi and wished her happiness. Shu Qi on the stage lovingly embraced the bride as tears ran down her face. Many online praised them both for being very gracious and even wished Shu Qi to find happiness that belonged to her soon. When the wedding banquet ended, Carina Lau Ka Ling, Tony Leung Chiu Wai, Mr. and Mrs. Wong Kar Wai and Taiwan director Hou Hsiao-Hsien and others went to the venue's balcony to chat. Wai Jai ditched Ka Ling and chatted with Hou Hsiao-Hsien and Wong Kar Wai. Perhaps Wong Kar Wai was afraid of neglecting his wife, later he immediately chatted with his wife to make up. * (2013/11/20) Aaron Kwok Fu Sing after winning two Taiwan Golden Horse Best Actor Awards and the Mainland Changchun Best Actor, he with SILENT WITNESS (CHUEN MUN MUK GIK) defeated AMERICAN DREAMS IN CHINA's Tong Dawei, FINDING MR. RIGHT's Wu Xiubo to win the China Image Film Festival Best Actor. SILENT also won Best Picture and Best Original Song to become the film festival's big winner. Sing Sing was very excited to win Best Actor at an overseas film festival. "Winning an award is always a happy event. As an actor, I would definitely put all my efforts into every film. Being commended in the end is very encouraging." Sing Sing even said online that No pride in victory, no disappointment in defeat. Every award would drive him to continue to work hard. This time Sing Sing's fellow nominees included FINDING MR. RIGHT's Wu Xiubo and AMERICAN DREAMS IN CHINA's Tong Dawei. Sing Sing spoke with BBC about his film career, then visiting the television station. He rather admired the enormous news center and posed for photos with workers. Best Actress Yang Zishan was very excited about her award. Winning with SO YOUNG she said, "Thank you Director Zhao Wei for daring to cast me." * (2013/11/20) Tony Leung Ka Fai and Carina Lau Ka Ling starred in the film BEIJING LOVE STORY, which held a Beijing press conference yesterday. A trailer was aired, with beautiful scenery of Greece and a fiery bed scene with Tong Liya. Lau Ka Ling shared her on and off screen love stories with Tony Leung Ka Fai and Tony Leung Chiu Wai. Lau Ka Ling said, "While shooting in Greece, my wedding anniversary with Leung Chiu Wai took place. Although Wai Jai was in the U.S., he still very romantically sent roses to me. It was truly quiet a surprise." Lau Ka Ling at the time was shooting a romantic scene on an island with Leung Ka Fai, coincidentally both Leung Chiu Wai and Leung Ka Fai's English names are Tony Leung. Thus Lau Ka Ling joked that she and Leung Ka Fai were truly fated. Leung Ka Fai at the press conference called Lau Ka Ling wifey, to which she did not know whether to laugh or cry. Lau Ka Ling picked her husband Wai jai to win this year's Golden Horse Best Actor award. She even joked with Leung Ka Fai, "Although I like COLD WAR (HONG JIN), you will still lose to Leung Chiu Wai!" Lau Ka Ling in the film BENDS (GOR GAI) performed the theme song THE START OF THE END. During the record she felt nervous, but the producer and the director both felt that she was the most suitable to sing it because she was the female lead Anna. She understood the character's experience the most. Lau Ka Ling in the film played a upper crust rich wife, when she hit bottom in life she and driver Chen Kun dined at a street stall. She sat in a short plastic chair and enjoyed the authentic cooking. On camera she only pretended to take a few bites, but later she thought the food was delicious and ate for real. * (2013/11/20) Taiwan's Golden Horse Awards will take place Saturday. With the Golden Horse Awards' 50th anniversary, Piaget planned a special "Golden Horse 50 Glorious Moment" photography event. Best Actor, Best Actress and Best Director nominees from China, Hong Kong and Taiwan participated. The photos would not only be in the event program but also on commemorative postcards for fans to collect in celebration of the Golden Horse's half a century history. On the day of the shoot, famous image designer Roger Cheng and photographer Liang Su took charge and created the men's "chok" and the women's beauty. The watch and diamond jewelry sponsorship made them look even better. Shu Qi's earrings and rings sparkled for the spotlight; the 19 year old new comer Cherry Ngan Cheuk Ling's light choreography displayed her nominated films THE WAY WE DANCE as she looked very lively and cute; "Double Ka Fai" Nick Cheung Ka Fai and Tony Leung Ka Fai "chok" out masculinity in suits, but they were still no longer for Johnnie To Kei Fung's match lighting dominance. To commemorate the film industry's outstanding work, Piaget and the Golden Horse Award set up a "Piaget Excellence of the Year Award" to further encourage Best Screenplay. From the Best Original Screenplay nominees, the most excellent work will be honored. This year they included ILO ILO, A TOUCH OF SIN, TO MY DEAR GRANNY, AMERICAN DREAMS IN CHINA and Hong Kong's DRUG WAR (DUK JIN). The event yesterday announced its second wheel of guest presenters. Three nights ago she celebrated in advance with her grandmother, and her mother treat them; two nights ago her father took her to a birthday dinner with grandma and grandpa. She called the elders BBs and posted the photos online, praising them for growing backwards and being very young. "They all look very young, they are BBs who grow backward; but...I want to say...I am old! Haha!" People online not only wished Ah Sa Happy Birthday but also complimented her mother as young and pretty. Ah Sa yesterday guest starred in the film NAKED AMBITION 2 (HO CHING 2). Both she and Chapman To Man Jat wore bathrobes. She pouted to pretend to be sexy while To Man Jat coldly glanced at her. Ah Sa wrote, "Today I am guest starring in Mr. To's new film NAKED AMBITION 2. This is Chocolate Jat and Marilyn Monroe Sa, Hahahaha!" Ah Jat stated that this time he called in all the favors. "Wong Jing would guest star as an intellectual, responsible for criticizing Hong Kong's rotten films. Actually it will also have many top guest stars but I can't talk about them yet." As for DaDa Chan Jing, Ah Jat said that he will save her a female lead spot for his new film at the end of the year. He said yesterday, "She said that she would make it. When I am free I will meet with her and communicate. I don't want to have any other 'accident'." * (2013/11/19) 37 year old Taiwan actor Chang Chen yesterday held a wedding ceremony with his girlfriend of 4 years Ann Zhuang. The ceremony was as star studded as a film award show. Former rumored girlfriend Shu Qi even graciously attended. Shu Qi wished the newlyweds joy and happiness three times in a row and even urged them to have a child quickly. At the banquet, Chang Chen arranged for his wife to personally hand the floral bouquet to Shu Qi. Chang Chen and Ann have been dating for 4 years. On November 12 they registered their marriage in Taipei. He chose to propose on January 4 2013, a special day that symbolized "love you for a lifetime"; and to register their marriage on November 12 2013 for the "11-12-13" sequential number date. Yesterday they held a wedding ceremony at the SPOT Cinema in Taipei. The venue was decorated with fresh white flowers. Along with his veteran actor father Chang Kuo-Chu, brother Chang Han, all the guests were all film industry heavyweights like Tony Leung Chiu Wai, Carina Lau Ka Ling, Mr. and Mrs. Wong Kar Wai, A Yue Chang, Chen Bo-Lin, Bowie Tsang, Leon Dai and others. The appearance of Chang Chen's former rumored girlfriend Shu Qi caused the most ruckus. She wished the new couple joy and happiness three times in a row and urged them to quickly have a baby. The couple held the ceremony on the lawn. Ann wore a HK$ 190,000 Vera Wang wedding gown. Chang Chen said, "Thank you Mama Zhuang for giving birth to such a nice and pretty daughter for me, because of everyone's well wishes we are extra happy." Guests chanted for a kiss, but Chang Chen bashfully said, "We will make up for it when we get indoors!" Chang Chen arranged for his wife to give the floral bouquet to Shu Qi. The host joked, "Shu Qi is already speechless with tears all over her face!" When Ann handed the floral bouquet to Shu Qi, she wished her happiness as well. Shu Qi was moved to tears as her face turned red. After embracing Ann she said, "I have come to support and wish my good friends well." The sister of Chang Chen's former girlfriend Jozie Lu, Miranda Lu, host yesterday's press conference. The newlyweds were often lovingly touching cheeks. Chang Chen even kissed the bride twice, but Ann seemed too nervous to smile. Chang Chen explained, "She has been out all day today and is very nervous. I reminded her that the dress was very long, be careful not to trip." Chang Chen often knelt down to fix his wife's dress. He also clarified that Ann was not his former assistant but former co-workers, as he did not want her to be described as Cinderella. Chang Chen said, "I am very nervous, I want to have a very warm gathering as we want to share our marriage with family and friends. It doesn't have to be too grand, since it isn't any wedding of the century. I hope to have a child as soon as possible. As for the honeymoon, I still have to work on THE ASSASSIN's reshoot so for now I don't have the time." Chang Chen dated actress Jozie Lu for 6 years, back then his company was rumored to have interfered. Finally he sent a postcard from Japan to discuss the break up with Jozie Lu. Later he dated Taiwan singer Olivia Yan and model Tanya Ng but both relationships ended. Finally he and his Japanese translator co-worker Ann became involved over time and tied the knot. Chang Chen's chosen wedding venue was the SPOT Cinema in the Chongshan district of Taipei. This two story classic mansion was a class 3 historical landmark there. The government asked famous director Hou Hsiao-Hsien to take over its operation, to Chang Chen who came from a film family it was very meaningful. Chang Chen said, "This is the cinema that Director Hou took over. It has a connection with film because I too am an actor who makes movies. The environment is great both outdoors and indoors. In a noisy place like Taipei such a comfortable space actually exists, I feel it is very suitable for a wedding." Director Wong Kar Wai went all over the venue with a smile on his face. Speaking of Chang Chen's wedding, he said, "Chang Chen is all grown!" He thoughtfully gave an envelope as a gift. In the envelope was not a check but an ordinary note that said, "From now on I will cut out less of your scenes". Wong Kar Wai has always taken his time with his work and was famous for cutting scenes. Chang Chen in order to make THE GRANDMASTERS (YUT DOI JUNG SI) postponed his wedding from last year to this year. He also practiced the Baji Quan to play Razor. The production even took 3 years. Finally when the film was released, both he and Julian Cheung Chi Lam had many scenes cut out. Thus this note might only have a few words, it was very meaningful. Director Ang Lee arrived late. He not only gave a red and white rose and bear floral basket but also red pockets. He praised Chang Chen as a very great person. Speaking of marriage advice, Ang Lee smiled and said, "Listen to your wife!" * (2013/11/19) The Performing Artist Guild's 20th anniversary celebration will take place on the 25th. The PAG chair election will take place at the end of December. * (2013/11/19) The 47 year old director Leon Dai and his Best Actress girlfriend Kwai Lun-Mei have been dating for eight years. Earlier at the film production start he talked about his girlfriend and lovingly said that he did not want to give her just one movie but a lifetime. He seemingly hinted at they will be together for the rest of their lives; he even wished that she would win this year's Golden Horse Best Actress award. The 50th Golden Horse Award will take place Saturday in Taipei and will be the grandest event in Taiwan this year. Best Actors, Best Actresses, Directors and others of the past 49 years will try to make time to attend. The guest presenter list also continues to grow. Jury chair Director Ang Lee has an important task as well as he and the rest of the jury are watching movies for ten days. Yet Ang Lee has learned to reduce stress with rope jumping. Yesterday Taiwan talk show host Kevin Tsai posted a photo of Ang Lee jumping rope indoors, but because the rope was too long Ang Lee could only jump his arms extended. * (2013/11/19) Andy Lau Tak Wa in the film FIRESTORM (FUNG BO) while in pursuit of robber Hu Jun rams him with a car. He even risks hanging outside the car as he does his best to bring him to justice. Action director Chin Kar Lok originally arranged for doubles, but Wa Jai and Hu Jun decided to perform the stunts themselves for the best result. Wa Jai hung outside a moving car, while Hu Jun in the car took crashes until the air bags deployed. Chin Kar Lok has taken all the safety precaution and rehearsed many times, finally the shoot went smoothly. Wa Jai's character had many emotional scenes. His performance was more and more fierce as he went on, since it was an interesting character that he has wanted to play in recent years. Hu Jun said that he antagonized Wa Jai in the film, with fierce gun fights and car chases. He truly had wounds all over. * (2013/11/19) Shawn Yue Man Lok in the film AS THE LIGHT GOES OUT (GAU FOR YING HUNG) played a firefighter and a father for the first time. He played a single father who in order to save his son in a fire continued to struggle between "saving others or saving his son first". He said that the father character in the film was very similar to himself. "I am more traditional, if I have a child I definitely would be very nervous. In the film my relationship with my son is like a friendship, we would buy snacks together, make fun of each other, but when something happens I would risk everything to protect him." Acting with a child was not as hard as he has imagined, in order to cultivate a relationship they often played together. * (2013/11/19) Claiming to have mid grade depression and retiring from show business for three months, DaDa Chan Jing earlier this month held a press conference to announce her return. Two nights ago she attended her first event of her comeback, as she and Bosco Wong Chung Chak host a SAINT SEIYA shopping center display lighting ceremony. DaDa was transformed into the goddess Athena in white as she put 3 inch career line on display in preparation for her return to the film industry. After three months of "diving" DaDa was said to have grown out of shape. For her return, she lost 6 pounds of fat and managed to keep her bust size. "At my fattest I reached 120 pounds. My appetite is enormous so dieting is very hard, in particular with the huge pressure before. My favorite is sweets. Now I rely on running and exercising as well as health foods. The goal is to lose 6 more pounds." DaDa revealed that she has already recovered from her depression, as she no longer needed medication or appointment. "Now the state of mind is the most important. I have experienced a major event in life, learned a lot and gotten my lessons." As for the damage from her sudden LAN KWAI FONG 3 (HEI OI YEH PO 3) resignation, DaDa dodged the question. "For now I haven't received any legal document from the film company. I don't want to say too much, as the management company is handling it. I expect the worst case scenario of compensation because it is my fault!" She was lucky that she was not blacklisted, as she has already taken two new films for December. "Both films were negotiated from before, they are still waiting for me to perform." DaDa declined to reveal whether she has called LAN 3 director Wilson Chin Kwok Wai. The company contacted her past clients on her behalf. She stressed that the case involved legal proceedings, thus she would not answer if she replied to the director. When asked about her return to the sexy route and the possibility of her mood disorder returning, DaDa said, "I have no problem with being sexy, I also don't mind the rate. This time the rate is similar to before. Earlier the mood disorder isn't from work related stress but from something at home. I didn't know how to handle it so I thought of retiring. I discovered that I really like the performing job, I couldn't let it go and I had to be responsible for my own matters." * (2013/11/19) Sean Lau Ching Wan, Louis Koo Tin Lok, Nick Cheung Ka Fai starred in the film THE WHITE STORM (SO DUK), which was selected to be the Rome Film Festival closing film. They along with Ching Wan's wife Amy Kwok Oi Ming, director Benny Chan Muk Sing took to the red carpet. As viewers surrounded the actors for autographs and photo opportunities, the barricade was also knocked over as the red carpet came to a halt for almost half a hour. Ching Wan was a frequent film festival guest. Foreign media screamed his English name and asked him for a photo with his wife. Koo Tin Lok and Cheung Ka Fai were also popular with female fans. After the premiere the applause lasted 5 minutes, as viewers complimented the film. Ching Wan and Cheung Ka Fai were teary eyed as they embraced each other. Koo Tin Lok gave them pats on their backs and displayed the brotherhood on and off camera. Kwok Oi Ming was also teary eyed as she wiped away her tears. She said to Ching Wan, "I held back my tears several times as I was afraid of ruining my make up, but the brotherhood in the film was extremely moving!" Many female fans rushed the actors and praised their great performance. * (2013/11/19) Simon Yam Tat Wa's first film as a director, TALES FROM THE DARK (MAI LEI YEH) was selected for the Toronto Asian Film Festival. He joked that he has become addicting to directing. When viewers shrieked in fright he felt very satisfied. He is planning a police ghost film that he would like to start production in 2015, but he was worried that his wife Qi Qi would complain about him getting up in the middle of the night to come up with ideas. Yam Tat Wa also visited a senior center that provided services to the Chinese community as well as the Niagara Falls. Many Chinese and Korean tourists asked him for photos, and he himself took many beautiful photos for his collection. * (2013/11/18) 37 year old Taiwan artist Chang Chen to day will hold a wedding banquet with his girlfriend of 4 years. As a filmmaker Chang Chen was quite thoughtful, as he arranged for the wedding banquet to take place in Taipei's Spot Cinema. Having worked with Wong Kar Wai on the film THE GRANDMASTERS (YUT DOI JUNG SI), Chang Chen invited Wong Kar Wai, Zhang Ziyi, Tony Leung Chiu Wai and Carina Lau Ka Ling and others to the wedding banquet. She even wore a swimsuit like black see through work out clothing with red high heels, exaggerated gold necklaces and a black jacket. Sammi joked that she was so sexy because she was in too much of a hurry. She just grabbed the clothes randomly. She thought that the song title was PREHISTORIC WEAPON. Women's prehistoric weapons were their bodies, so she put on the tight costume. Cheuk Wan Chi praised that her prehistoric weapons were self confidence, perseverance and determination. Cheuk Wan Chi said that KICK ASS GIRLS has opened for a few days. Sammi had to work all along and was unable to go in support. Hopefully this week they will be able to watch the film together. * (2013/11/18) Carina Lau Ka Ling two nights ago attended the BENDS (GOR GAI) premiere with Chen Kun. Both were dressed in black and could not be more well matched. After the premiere, Ka Ling held an after party at her new restaurant. Aside from Chen Kun, the cast and the crew attended and continued the celebration. Ka Ling said that her husband Tony Leung Chiu Wai already supported her in the afternoon and earlier attended the Cannes premiere with her, so he did not attend. With this type of subject, would she have lower box office expectation? She said, "You don't know about that, sometimes, the more expectation you have the more disappointed you end up. Without any expectation you may be surprised instead. The market determines that, you can't predict it. For me, the experience was already very gratifying." She said that with the right script and co-stars she would continue to support new directors. Would she reduce her rate next time as well? Ka Ling said, "This was a very special case, because i felt now Hong Kong film has entered a more passive phase. With already fewer and fewer films, I felt that I should support it. However I still have no plan to direct." Chen Kun turned down the new film PAINTED SKIN 3 (WAT PEI 3) and reportedly the film company asked Huang Xiaoming to replace him; Chen Kun could not care less. "After PAINTED SKIN: RESURRECTION (WAT PEI 2) I already said that I wouldn't make it again. Since I already said I wouldn't, they could find 100 people to make it if they want." * (2013/11/18) Louis Koo Tin Lok, Nick Cheung Ka Fai, Sean Lau Ching Wan starred in THE WHITE STORM (SO DUK), which has been selected to be the Rome Film Festival closing film. When they arrived they first went sightseeing. An avid photographer Koo Tin Lok brought his own expensive camera for the scenery on his first trip to Rome, while Cheung Ka Fai modeled for him. Cheung Ka Fai said that he wanted to go to the Colosseum. Because Bruce Lee and Chuck Norris had a fierce fight scene that left a deep impression with him there, he had to go there to take photos. Cheung Ka Fai was even "Bruce Lee possessed" as he comically made the classic Bruce Lee pose. Lau Ching wan around dusk took the train from Milan to Rome to meet up with the team and had dinner together. * (2013/11/17) Vanness Wu (Ng Kin Ho) yesterday wed his Singapore girlfriend Arissa in Los Angeles and spent HK$ 1 million on the wedding banquet that 150 guests attending. Last week they became legally married with local authority approval. Yesterday they held their wedding banquet in The Resort Pelican Hill in Los Angeles and unveiled their wedding photos as well. The always stylish Vanness drifted away from the traditional wedding photos. They did not wear any traditional formal wedding wear. At the wedding ceremony Vanness and Arissa with the preacher, family and friends as their witnesses exchanged rings and vows. The preacher advised him to say "sorry" more in the future and her to reply "I forgive you." They were moved to tears. The newlyweds danced the first dance and won a lot of applause. After their parents spoke, they cut the wedding cake. Vanness' good friend Elva Hsiao (Siu Ah Hin) performed I DO. The wedding atmosphere was romantic. Because his wife is the Singapore olive oil heiress as her family was worth over HK$2 billion, they were very low key. Thus this wedding was closed to the media. The hotel had strict security with several dozen guards on patrol. Reportedly with almost 150 family members and friends, the flights and hotel cost over HK$1 million. Aside from Siu Ah Hin, Sammo Hung Kam Bo's son Jimmy Hung Tin Cheung who grew up with Vanness was also a guest. F3 members Yin Sing Yuk, Chou Yu Man and Chu Hau Tin were unable to attend due to work; Vanness later will return to Taiwan for another banquet and dine with them to celebrate. In January another banquet will take place in Singapore, then they will begin their honeymoon. * (2013/11/17) Carina Lau Ka Ling's HK$ 10 million investment with Sir David Tang Wing Cheung, a home furnishing store, opened yesterday. Her husband Tony Leung Chiu Wai came in support. Lau Ka Ling mentioned that after her kidnapping photos were published, she indeed thought about suicide. After two setbacks she did not know how to handle it, so she might as well vanish! Many did not expect Lau Ka Ling to talk about her kidnapping years ago on TELLING MARIA 2. Yesterday Ka Ling smiled and said, "Actually people keep mentioning it, I don't mind. People can't get over it, I already have!" She admitted that she remembered the film that started the trouble incorrectly, saying it was not LONG ARM OF THE LAW (SAN GONG KEI BING) but SET ME FREE (NGOR YIU TOH MONG). Back then TVB negotiated it for her. She joked that she was getting old and could no longer remember. On the program she said that after a certain magazine published her kidnapping photos, Wai jai worried that she would jump to her death from the 18th floor. Ka Ling admitted that she indeed thought about suicide. She said, "I thought about it. Because I don't know how to handle it, I might as well vanish. (Because you were still young at the time?) First I was young, and secondly I experienced it twice. For anyone it would have been an enormous test. (Do you feel better now that I have talked about it?) Actually I talked about it before too, everyone is very interested in this matter. (After the incident, did your relationship with Wai Jai improve?) It is unrelated, but at the time he was a great pillar by my side. I instead thank this incident for making me stronger. I hope through this incident to tell young people and anyone who runs into problems, there isn't much that you can't get over." * (2013/11/17) TELLING MARIA 2 aired the last episode of its Carina Lau Ka Ling interview. Ka Ling revealed that she was a neat freak. When she was working on a film in Hengdian, she would put in all new bathtubs, basins in all the bathrooms in the entire hotel because she demanded the bathrooms to be very clean. However Tony Leung Chiu Wai was the opposite, which sometimes would frustrate her. "Wai Jai would go right to bed as soon as he came home. I would keep thinking how much dirt he tracked in, which was very hard for me to take. He would not care, leaving shoes and socks all over the place. I envy how carefree he is, while I couldn't get over myself. He has always been influencing me, and I am adjusting to him. We have separate bathrooms. I realize in recent years his bathroom is getting cleaner and cleaner, maybe subconsciously I have influenced him too." Wai Jai pointed out that Wai Jai was a great actor who was well absorbed into the acting world. At first she was not used to how he would turn into someone else, like when he was working on LUST CAUTION (SIK GAI) he was very dark. "I have to accommodate him all the time, I would keep the home very tidy so he has nothing to worry about. Sometimes when the light goes out at home, he would say, 'Lau Ka Ling the light bulb blew!' He only trusted me and would only ask me to do it." Would she be jealous over Wai Jai's gossips? She said, "After over 20 years together, I already know if something happened with the slightest response. As long as it's not excessive it's OK. The best is for me not to know, he watches himself very carefully." Ka Ling revealed that when she and Wai Jai first got together, Wai Jai often had no time to be with his girlfriend. His personality was withdrawn and odd. Thus she had some poor opinions of Wai Jai. When she and Wai Jai were in love, was Margie Tsang Wa Sin still in the picture? She said, "A lot were in the picture, the explanation was all because of work. He and Wa Sin broke up and got back together 3 times, in between he had other girls. He was also with Kitty Lai Mei Han for a pretty long time before breaking up. At the time Wai Jai and I weren't dating yet. When fate came you couldn't stop it, I didn't want to either." * (2013/11/17) Louis Koo Tin Lok and Nick Cheung Ka Fai's film THE WHITE STORM (SO DUK) was invited to be the Rome Film Festival opening film. They received the royal treatment and a day at the duck (gigolo) shop, where they ran into Matt Chow Hoi Kwong, Alton Yu Dik Wai and others as super odd "Malaysian ducks". They used every trick to seduce the trio. The worst was Yu Dik Wai who wore a transparent look with a big red rope for his erotic dance and his service of Chau Sau Na. He gave her a massage down to her toes, which made her screamed with pleasure, "Great!" However this scene was hardest to hold their laughter in because the guys often improvised. LONG ARM OF THE LAW producer Stephen Shiu Yeuk Yuen yesterday mentioned this incident on facebook. He said that Lau Ka Ling remembered the film title incorrectly. Shiu Yeuk Yuen said, "Lau Ka Ling said that she was kidnapped because she refused to make a movie called LONG ARM OF THE LAW. My response is this: this of course is Ka Ling remembering incorrectly, which turned into LONG ARM OF THE LAW. Actually I know what the film's title was......speaking of LONG ARM OF TH LAW, the first one was made in 1984, the second one in 1986, the third in 1988, and the final one in 1989, called LONG ARM OF THE LAW 4 UNDERGROUND EXPRESS. When she sings karaoke she would sing from the beginning to the end, she would sing many, many songs and say a lot. However she would only do that in a very safe environment. I would occasionally sing with her. She would even sing harmony for me. I am very lucky to see Faye's other side." She also revealed that she helped her friend Anna Ueyama and "beg" Maggie Cheung Man Yuk to buy insurance. Anna Ueyama personally recalled when she first began her insurance career, Ka Ling actually persuaded an artist friend to buy insurance from her. It was the first time I gained weight for a movie, the first time I smoked so much, the first time I put on such heavy make up, the first time playing such a crazy character. I had a lot of emotional scenes. In one scene someone broke a bottle over my head in the streets, many pedestrians didn't know we were shooting a movie and thought that I really was getting beaten up." * (2013/11/14) Director Ang Lee earlier was interviewed in Taiwan. When he made LUST CAUTION (SIK GAI) he worked until he was in tears. "That day I was crying out of control on the side. (Tony) Leung Chiu Wai even came over to comfort me and said, 'Director, we are just showing our skin and flesh. You have to take care'. Leung Chiu Wai suffered at my hands like that but instead he came over to comfort me. After the shoot, Leung Chiu Wai, Tang Wei, Wang Leehom and I were all sick for a long time." Ang Lee even said that sometimes he tortured Leung Chiu Wai until he had no energy to perform. He seemed to be competing with Wong Kar Wai who could torture better. Ang Lee even said that after he first finished reading Eileen Chang Oi Ling's LUST CAUTION original novel he was very angry and thought it was a dirty novel. He thought it was indecent and did not want to make it. However the more he did not want to the more attractive it became. * (2013/11/14) This year is the 40th anniversary of Bruce Lee's passing. Spink and Son on December 5th will auction off his personal items and film collectibles in Hong Kong, including the 1972 yellow tracksuit that he designed for GAME OF DEATH and nunchukus from a film. Other auction items included a Bruce Lee designed jade amulet, a FIST OF FURY (JING MO MOON) autographed special publication, and a Bruce Lee drawn and autographed 1973 monk artwork. It was a character design for Bruce Lee's new film that was set aside due to his passing. * (2013/11/14) Chrissie Chau Sau Na two nights ago attended the KICK ASS GIRLS (BAU 3 CHIU GIU WA) premiere. She said that she did not need rumored boyfriend Kelvin Kwan. She said, "When I made this film I got much fatter, not only am I pushed up to the point of being a little out of breath but even my back zippers almost busted open." Will she push up even more for her Malaysia promotion later? Chau Sau Na said, "Next time I will let director Cheuk Wan Chi do it, her figure and her mouth would be the most explosive." She changed her mind about inviting her parents to the premiere but not to avoid them meeting Kwan Chor Yiu. "We are just friends, perhaps later I will book a show for friends and my parents." Kwan Chor Yiu was asked if he wanted to meet the parents in private. He said, "I never thought about that. Would I offer to book a show for Chau Sau Na? I instead would like the film to be released on 3D DVD soon." Did he want to enjoy it with freeze frame? Kwan Chor Yiu explained that watching DVD and watching at the movies were two different matter. Speaking of Chau Sau Na saying that men who knew how to cook would get more points, Kwan Chor Yiu excitedly said, "I have a food program, I also hope to find friends to taste test. Let's see if she will have time!" Jeana Ho Pui Yu was asked about LAN KWAI FONG 3 (HEI OI YEH PO 3) demanded her friend DaDa Chan Jing for 1 million in compensation. She said that she did not know. "Since it already happened, you can't say whether it is good or bad. Everyone has experience, ultimately she is young. Would she say a few words on behalf of DaDa to Wilson Chin Kwok Wai? "The film's story has already been changed, I have never mentioned this incident with the director and the producer." Would she help her friend financially? Jeana said, "I too have to make money for my family. If I am financially able I will help her. However I really can't help." * (2013/11/14) Perry Chiu Woon, Terence Yin (Wan Chi Wai), Clifton Ko Chi Sum and Li Kui Ming yesterday held a press conference to announce that the play GUM SOR GEI (GOLDEN LOCK BIOGRAPHY) will perform 10 shows in January at the Sunbeam Cinema. Ko Chi Sum pointed out that later he will adapt DIE HAI QING SENG into an opera film and even planned to form a film company with Li Kuiming and ask Donnie Yen Chi Tan to make the film. Wan Chi Wai earlier worked on the Gordon Chan Ka Seung produced film ZOMBIE FIGHT CLUB in Taiwan. In one scene he angrily shattered glass but he injured his right wrist. He had five stitches. Although he had a scar, he did not mind. [ BLAH OF THE WEEK ] Columns, Reviews, Interviews 1. APPLE DAILY, NOVEMBER 20 2013, FUN ENTERTAINMENT INSPECTION GOLDEN HORSE BEST DIRECTOR IS A WAR OF HEROIC DUO WONG KAR WAI BATTLES TSAI MING-LIANG Taiwan's Golden Horse Award will take place in four days (the 23rd). The Golden Horse Award is the Chinese film award with the longest history, the meaning behind its golden anniversary is enormous. Aside from asking Academy Award winning director Ang Lee to lead the jury, its nominations are also thoroughly selected and ar all top Chinese films of this year. Among the categories Best Feature Film and Best Director competitions will be furious, with too many factors in play. They perhaps involve production technique, cultural background and even politics. THE GRANDMASTERS Has Great Odds First let's talk about Best Director. Wong Kar Wai spent ten years on THE GRANDMASTERS (YUT DOI JUNG SI). Although the Ip Man story connected everything, actually it was about side characters like Gong Er, Razor and Man San. Between punches and kicks philosophy is hidden. The film plot had hidden meaning, its open ending brought viewers infinite space to image. With the aesthetic visuals and blue film score, the film completely lived up to the aura of the grand master. Best Director should be as good as Wong Kar Wai's, except on the way he ran into stray dogs. Tsai Ming-Liang's STRAY DOGS was about a down on his luck single father with his two children, living life on the edge with no steady home and never filled bellies. The light drama is soaked with heavy human culture. The film just won the Venice Film Festival's jury prize, as Tsai Ming-Liang became the light of Taiwan. The Taiwan minister of Culture Lung Ying-Tai even said that "the dull Taiwan was in dire need of such pleasure". With the Golden Horse Award's 50th anniversary, it would be understandable for the event to insist on presenting the award to a Taiwan director. Ang Lee admitted that Tsai Ming-Liang was his good friend, but with his history and international standing he absolutely would not play favorites. As for Golden Horse frequent flyer Johnnie To Kei Fung is nominated with DRUG WAR (DUK JIN). He has won Best Director three times with THE MISSION (CHEUNG FOR), BREAKING NEWS (DAI GEIN SI) and LIFE WITHOUT PRINCIPLE (DUET MING GUM). With strong competition ahead, his chances have drastically declined. Best Feature Film remains a battle between THE GRANDMASTERS and STRAY DOGS, but in terms of film entertainment value, the star studded THE GRANDMASTERS naturally has a better chance. However, Singapore director Anthony Chen's first full length feature ILO ILO took place during the 97 Asian Financial Storm and was about a child and his Filipino maid. The film first won the Cannes Film Festival Camera d'Or at Director's Fortnight. This year it also receives six Golden Horse nominations (Best Feature Film, Best Original Screenplay, Best New Director, Best New Performer, Best Supporting Actress, Best Supporting Actor) and is seen as a dark horse. - FUNG KWOK HONG Best Director Nominations Wong Kar Wai (THE GRANDMASTERS) Winning Index: 4.5 points Tsai Ming-Liang (STRAY DOGS) Winning Index: 4 points Jia Zhangke (A TOUCH OF SIN) Winning Index: 3.5 points Johnnie To (DRUG WAR) Winning Index: 3.5 points Chung Mung-Hong (SOUL) Winning Index: 3 points Best Feature Film Nominations THE GRANDMASTERS Winning Index: 4.5 points STRAY DOGS Winning Index: 4 points ILO ILO Winning Index: 3.5 points A TOUCH OF SIN Winning Index: 3 points DRUG WAR Winning Index: 2.5 points Juno Has Difficulty With New Director Competition The Best New Director competition is just as fierce. Although Juno Mak Chun Lung invades the Golden Horse with the gleaming word of mouth for RIGOR MORTIS (GEUNG SI), he runs into a strong group of opponents and his chances are less than optimistic. The first time director of SO YOUNG, Vicki Zhao Wei has not brought shame to the reputation of her Beijing Film Academy director department research center bachelor's degree, as the film has made over 700 million RMB; Singapore's new director Anthony Chen with ILO ILO is competing for Best Picture and Best New Director. Since conceivably he will lose Best Picture, he may likely win Best New Director as a consolation prize. Mutual Admiration For Hong Kong Directors As for Longman Leung Man Lok and Sunny Luk Kim Ching, with COLD WAR (HONG JIN) they won this year's Hong Kong Film Award Best Director. In terms of production methods and storytelling technique, they are better than other nominees. Thus their chances are higher. Being called the favorite, Luk Kim Ching earlier said that he would face it normally. He said, "The Golden Horse will be the second overseas film festival, Leung Lok Man and I will take the chance to learn. We haven't thought about anything else since we don't want any stress." He said that he has seen Juno's RIGOR MORTIS and thought that it had a chance to win. He said, "At work I heard (Shawn) Yue Man Lok and them always saying how great it was. Finally on my day off I went to see it. It really is entertaining and made with a lot of heart." Juno earlier admitted that he too would face the Golden Horse Award normally. "Lately people keep asking me how I feel. Actually for these three months I have been flying nonstop, I haven't officially watched my opponents' movies. So I haven't realized what kind of reaction I should have." He felt that the joy still remained, "Of course I am very happy, with the Best (Visual) Effect nomination at the same time I am happy for the entire team." Best New Director Nominations Longman Leung, Sunny Luk (COLD WAR) Winning Index: 4.5 points Anthony Chen (ILO ILO) Winning Index: 3.5 points Vicki Zhao (SO YOUNG) Winning Index: 3.5 points Juno Mak (RIGOR MORTIS) Winning Index: 3 points Hsu Chao-jen (TOGETHER) Winning Index: 2.5 points Note: 5 points is the highest chance to win (Apple Dailyl Prediction) 2. MING PAO DAILY, NOVEMBER 17 2013, FILM WORDS WONDERFUL BEIJING DETECTIVE BEIJING BLUES Realistic Police Film This week's Hong Kong film includes the Cheuk Wan Chi directed, Chrissie Chau Sau Na and others starred KICK ASS GIRLS (BAU 3 CHIU GIU WA), but it is released on few screens that are hard to find. I have not seen it yet. I have seen the soon to be screened at the China Film Panorama BEIJING BLUES. This Gao Qushu directed police film was very unique. Completely different from Gao Qushu and Chen Kuo-Fu co-directed hit spy film THE MESSAGE, it resembles a documentary. The film depicts a Beijing plain clothes cop who handles pickpockets, swindlers, car accidents, battery and other zero star minor crimes on the streets everyday. The film has a very strong folk realism, the detective's expressions are rather wonderful. Only the production method is loose and sloppy, in addition it makes the police very kind and gentle. This film defeated Johnnie To Kei Fung's LIFE WITHOUT PRINCIPLES (DUET MING GUM) at the Golden Horse Award last year by one vote, I feel LIFE WITHOUT PRINCIPLES is even better. BEIJING BLUES fortunately is unique in its own way. This type of realistic police films are rarely seen in Europe and America as well. Based on the novella “Nastanirh” by Rabindranath Tagore, and set in the late 1800s, the film concerns Charu, a housewife whose affluent lifestyle is marred by loneliness. Too busy with work, her husband Bhupati asks his cousin Amal to spend time with Charu. But soon their relationship blossoms into something stronger. Ray uses minimal dialogue and a masterful use of film technique to assemble this subtle yet deeply felt drama of unfulfilled longing and resigned frustration. Once cited by Satyajit Ray as his favorite among his own films. THE LAND OF WANDERING SOULS d. RithyPanh Length : 109 mins. Opening November 12 2013 at the Hong Kong Asian Film Festival [ HONG KONG ASIAN FILM FESTIVAL ] In 1999, Southeast Asia’s first fiber-optic cable was laid across Cambodia, stretching from one border of the war-torn country to the other. The difficult project provided low-paying jobs for the impoverished locals, and Rithy Panh and his documentary crew followed the workers for four months as they dug trenches through miles of ruined earth – and through history, collective memory, rusting instruments of war and forgotten human remains. An uncommonly dignified act of witness, The Land of Wandering Souls captures the strength, wit and humanity of the Cambodian people, as well as the social and economic contradictions facing a long-suffering nation as it enters the modern age. Based on a short story “Birinchibaba” by Bengali writer Rajshekhar Basu, the film tells the story of Birinchi, a “Babaj” (or saint) who claims to be ageless, and even says that he’s rubbed shoulders with Jesus and Buddha, not to mention taught Einstein the theory of relativity. Despite his outlandish claims, widower Gurupada Mitter and his daughter Buchki become Birinchi’s disciples, leaving Buchki’s spurned lover Satya with the task of outing the faux holy man. Ray shows his lighter side in this rich and delightfully-performed farce. WHEN LOVE ENCOUNTERS Can : Leung Ching Seung Yu d. Benny Lau Wai Hung Timothy Cheng Tsz Sing, Kandy Wong Length : 10 mins. The film depicts the teenage years of director RithyPanh, when his family suffered horribly beneath Pol Pot’s dictatorial regime. The picture, however, is “missing”. The only filmed images that exist from those years are Khmer Rouge propaganda, so Panh uses clay figures as stand-ins for himself, and also many Cambodians who would suffer atrocities at the Khmer Rouge’s hands. As a harrowing memoir of an oppressed people and a cinema experiment in representation, The Missing Picture is worthy of all its accolades, both past and forthcoming. INTRUDER d. Tsai Ming Liang Lee Kang Sheng, Yang Kuei Mei Length : 138 mins. Opening November 2 2013 at the Hong Kong Asian Film Festival Site : http://www.hkaff.asia/gala/Stray_Dogs.html [ HONG KONG ASIAN FILM FESTIVAL ] Tsai Ming Liang won the Golden Lion at Venice in 1994 with his second feature, Vive L’Amour. After almost two decades and a distinguished career as one of world’s preeminent auteurs, it seems only fitting that the Malaysian-born, Taiwanese filmmaker would pick up the Grand Jury Prize at the same festival with possibly his swan song, Stray Dogs. Tsai regular Lee Kang-Sheng plays an impoverished Taipei man who holds up advertising placards by day and lives in a deserted building with his two children by night. A kind-hearted supermarket staff helps out the kids, although things take a subsequent turn for the surreal as hints of regret and loss flood into the film. Its pair of ten-minute-plus final shots provide a haunting and strangely emotional conclusion to an oeuvre that, even when considered as part of the Slow Cinema movement, stands as one of a kind. THE LUNCHBOX d. Ritesh Batra Irrfan Khan, Nimrat Kaur Length : 104 mins. Opening November 2 2013 at the Hong Kong Asian Film Festival Site : http://www.hkaff.asia/newtalent/The_Lunchbox.html [ HONG KONG ASIAN FILM FESTIVAL ] Already hailed by many as one of the most charming Indian dramas in recent years, writer-director Ritesh Batra’s Mumbai-set debut tells the story of two lonely souls who are coincidentally connected over a mix-up in lunchbox service. Saajan is a grouchy and withdrawn widower who’s counting his days to retirement after 35 years in a joyless job; Ila, meanwhile, is a sad and neglected housewife despite being a wizard of a cook. As the pair of strangers begin pouring their hearts out to each other in the hand-written notes they hide in the wrongly delivered lunchbox every day, the film gently reveals itself to be a heart-warming tale on the sorrows of aging and the redemptive value of human connection. And as the characters whimsically suggest: sometimes the wrong train might just get you to the right station. WHY DON'T YOU PLAY IN HELL d. Sion Sono Jun Kunimura, Shinichi Tsutsumi, Hiroki Hasegawa, Fumi Nikaido Length : 126 mins. However, Mitsuko takes off in the middle of the shoot and massacre survivor Ikegami (Tsutsumi Shinichi) is back to take revenge. Now, it’s up to the film crew to bring Mitsuko back and finish the film – while trapped in the middle of a yakuza war. Opening November 1 2013 Site : http://www.hkaff.asia/asian/Comrade_Kim_goes_Flying.html [ HONG KONG ASIAN FILM FESTIVAL ] Comrade Kim Goes Flying is a fairytale in more ways than one. This is an unprecedented collaboration between three directors (one British, one Belgian, one North Korean) and countless North Korean colleagues who through belief and sheer force of will brought this Disney-esque tale to the screen. Professional circus performer Han Jong-sim underwent intense acting training to play Kim Yong-mi, a 28 year-old coal miner who gave up her dreams of being an acrobat to toil in the mines. But when she travels to Pyongyang, she’s instantly enchanted by the circus big top, the thrill of the trapeze, and the attentions of hunky acrobat Pak Jang-phil (Pak-Chung-guk). The feel-good movie of the year – for audiences and filmmakers alike! PAPER CANNOT WRAP UP EMBERS d. RithyPanh Length : 91 mins. Panh illuminates a lesser-seen, but not less vital segment of the Cambodian people, as he and his documentary crew follow disillusioned prostitutes living and working in Phnom Penh. Similar to S21: The Khmer Rouge Death Machine, Panh’s style is neither didactic nor lecturing but is instead a tapestry woven by his subjects as they reenact and comment on their daily drudgery. Serving as a silent witness, Panh’s camera nor his crew ever interfere, allowing these marginalized women to create their own indelible document. A COMPLICATED STORY Can : Yut Gor Fook Jap Goo Si d.
