With RIGOR opening soon on over 2/3 of Taiwan screens, 17 cinemas in Taipei alone, the film will have more screens than any Hong Kong film release in Taipei before! An ice sculpture with the number 88,888,888 was on display, with the trio breaking the ice in a ceremony to wish for more than NT$ 88,888,888 at the box office. Mak Chun Lung said that during the shoot they ran into supernatural incident. Actor Richard Ng Yiu Hong had a rocky scene in which he fell from the stairs to the courtyard and caught a "long haired woman" who stuck her head out at the stairway. He said, "I only realize that a 'real ghost' was on camera during playback." * (2013/11/06) The sexy Hong Kong Film Award Best Supporting Actress DaDa Chan Jing since announcing her show business retirement online on August 8 has been "diving" and did not appear in public. Yesterday DaDa called for an "apology press conference". For 8 minutes she read her letter of apology, apologized six times and explained her mid grade depression. When she mentioned her family she sobbed, but she did not shed any tear. After "diving" for three months, Chan Jing yesterday in the company of manager Celia Sie Lim Chi and company co-workers appeared at the hotel. She looked slimmer than during her "diving period" but still shocked wit her "elephant legs". DaDa first posed for the media then picked up her "cheat sheet" at the podium to speak. "3 months ago I announced my one-sided retirement from on screen work online, which was a very irresponsible act. After 3 months of consideration, I clearly realize how wrong I have been this time!" She admitted that the enormous stress from work and her family problem led to her depression. She planned to announced an one-sided retirement to escape. She said, "I was very impulsive with my one-sided announcement to retire, thinking that running away can resolve problems. I understand very much that my unwise decision before has affected many people, I hereby apologize to everyone." DaDa apologized to her company, her manager, the film company, shopping center clients and others one by one. When she apologized to her family, she sobbed. She was teary eyed but ultimately did not shed any tear. Speaking of her mood disorder, she said, "The doctor confirmed that I had mid grade depression. Earlier I kept my doctor appointments. The note that the doctor gave me expired on September 27. In October we began to reduce medication, then in the middle of this month, the condition has been drastically improved. DaDa said that after cooling down from this incident she clearly understood that she liked her show business job. Sh learned to cherish it and from now on would cherish every job opportunity. After reading the script, DaDa stood up again and gave half a minute long bow to the media. Then she turned around to leave and used tissue to wipe tears from the corner of her eyes. Reporters asked questions if she attempted suicide or about her company's "contract extension", but she just returned backstage. Manager Sie Lim Chi lightly touched her back in support. When reporters asked Sie Lim Chi to come back out and meet with everyone, she and DaDa left through the back door. * (2013/11/06) Carina Lau Ka Ling yesterday loaned her Tsim Sha Tsui Spanish restaurant for her film BENDS (GOR GAI)'s promotion. She felt that the move killed two birds with one stone. She also said that the restaurant was doing good business. Although she did not know when she would break even, but business has been steadily rising. For now she had no intention for a second store or other businesses. Ka Ling said that she liked acting the most, acting was her full time job. Lau Ka Ling attempted to play a wife who has lost her rich husband. In the film her husband suddenly vanished. Was she afraid that in reality her husband Tony Leung Chiu Wai would play disappearance? Ka Ling said, "You never know, so women shouldn't give themselves completely to men. Being too reliant would lack a sense of security. Men may suddenly die. Life is unpredictable, you have to be self reliant, increase your worth and be prepared." She pointed out that her character had no one to complain to, for dignity she refused to talk to anyone. Th real her had a lot of pressure that she hid inside, thus she needed to change the traditional thinking. * (2013/11/06) George Lam Chi Cheung will work with Chiu Tsang Hei again on their December 21 concert at the Venetian Macau. Ah Lam and his son Alex Lam Tak Shun would continue to sing together. He admitted that he was stricter on his son's singing technique than the outside and created certain pressure on him. Luckily Alex's performance improved more and more. Speaking of Alex's bed scene recently in LAN KWAI FONG 3 (HEI OI YEH PO 3), Ah Lam was interested in watching but his son prohibited him out of awkwardness. Ah Lam said, "He seems to be more interested in acting than singing. He also knows that working is very hard, but this is a process. He should try anything. Alex isn't a girl, he doesn't have to have a bottom line in bed scenes. I believe he wouldn't show too much." Ah Lam recalled that he had bed scenes with many stars like Flora Cheung Tin Oi, Carol Cheng Yui Ling, Liza Wang Ming Chuen, Maggie Cheung Man Yuk, and Rosamund Kwam Chi Lam, but mainly of them were for comedy; as long as the idea was not crass he did not feel anything wrong with it. * (2013/11/06) Cecilia Yip Tung accepted the Luisa Lai Chi San's TELLING MARIA 2 interview. Speaking of her nude scene in her first film NOMAD (LIT FOR CHING CHUN), she said that during the shoot she did not ask for the set to be cleared. She has always been serious about work, but would easily lead to misunderstanding with others. She said that she was hard to get along with, but when she made the television series THE FAMILY LINK (SI NAI BING TUEN) she got along great with Sheren Tang Shui Man and Kiki Sheung Tin Ngor. As for her dispute rumors with both Dayo Wong Chi Wa and Damien Lau Chung Yun, she also had her reasons. Yip Tung's husband Louis Tan (Chan Kwok Fun) was her first love. He felt that Yip Tung looked like a "family person" and considered her the most important person in his life. * (2013/11/05) 2011 Miss Hong Kong second runner up Whitney Hui Yik Nei earlier was revealed to have hooked up with rich Sun Group executive Adrew Lo Kai Bong, whose company was an investor on the film LAN KWAI FONG 3 (HEI OI YEH PO 3). Hui Yik Nei as the "boss lady" threw her weight around and has been accused of arrogance, bullying new comers, grabbing other people's wardrobe and skirting responsibility. Connie Man Hoi Ling, "Inch Mouth Barbie" Ha Wai Yu and Celia K. took the blunt of her abuse, even Christine Ng Wing Mei, Ava Yu Kiu and Jeana Ho Pui Yu all had to accept her behavior. When Hui Yik Nei was making her first film LAN KWAI FONG 3 she was in love with Andrew. No wonder she was spoilt and acted like a big shot around the film's pseudo models. Reportedly once "Inch Mouth Barbie" walked past Hui Yik Nei and Hui accusd her of peeking at her mobile phone. The vain Hui Yik Nei also changed her costumes on her own, treated workers poorly. Some even witnessed her pushing away a female hairstylist and made her cry on the spot. Hui Yik Nei was also jealous of Connie's personal clothing and even grabbing them for her own on camera appearance. During location shoots actors had to wait on the streets while Hui Yik Nei left for the nearby hair salon to rest without a second thought. She was also late to the set, making Jeana, Yu Kiu and Lady Ng wait. Hui Yik Nei's behavior faced Yu Kiu, Connie, Inch Mouth Barbi and Celia K's boycott. Jeana did not join them, but the ladies yesterday individually have hard about Hui Yik Nei's arrogance on the set. Yu Kiu gave three sighs over the phone. "I am not a troublemaker, no one can bully me. During the shoot I prepared my own personal clothing, but I had an assistance with me. No one dared to take my clothes. I admit that clothing grab problems often happened!" She stated that off camera she and Hui Yik Nei were not friends either. "We have no contact privately." Jeana yesterday also said, "Everyone calls her Boss Lady, I of course wouldn't dare to act rashly." Did she sit aside to watch the battle? Jeana said, "I sit to the said to wait for orders. Ultimately waiting is inevitable for group scenes." Ng Wing Mei admitted that she waited a long time for Hui Yik Nei and Jason Chan Pak Yu's wire scene. "I wasn't sure if we were waiting for someone or for lighting that day, at the time I was chatting while waiting. I was in a bra top and still had to wait on the street, it was pretty awkward." Inch Mouth Barbie admitted that they had arguments. "When the shoot just started we argued, maybe I was too dumb to realize that I insulted someone." Has she heard that Hui Yik Nei was arrogant? Inch Mouth Barbie said, "I have heard about friction between her and the crew, but I haven't personally witnessed any. I don't dare who started it." Hui Yik Nei said, "I of course would say I wasn't! For the wire scene, I had to go upstairs as they stood downstairs. The story called for it. Where would I get such power! Many scenes ran into rain, my hair was messy. The director told me to go to the salon to fix it. I really didn't grab Connie's clothing. All the clothing was the crew provided." She did not believe that pseudo models ganged up to be witnesses. "Although I wasn't familiar with them, it wasn't as bad as everyone said." * (2013/11/05) Nicholas Tse Ting Fung finally took a romantic film and is making WITH OR WITHOUT (YUT SUN YUT SAI) with Mainland star Gao Yuanyuan. Earlier Ting Fung shot on location in Beijing for the film, but instead of Gao Yuanyuan his co-star was Lam Suet. Lam Suet on the set got angry as soon as he saw Ting Fung and yelled at him. He even shoved Ting Fung once. Ting Fung showed a helpless smile like he was apologizing. In comparison to Ting Fung's past life risking performance this was much more relaxed. * (2013/11/05) Juno Mak Chun Lung's directing debut RIGOR MORTIS (GEUNG SI) after 11 days in release made HK$ 11 million in Hong Kong and Macau. The daily take of 1 million encouraged many. Juno said, "After everyone learn about the category III version, the interest in RIGOR MORTIS is even greater. Some cinemas contacted us directly as they would rather show both the category II B and III versions together, which was quite a surprise." He also said that the film's overseas performance was ideal. "At least 80% have been sold. Actually some investors are already talking about a sequel, but I feel my choice for the next film won't be a similar subject. In addition I have scripts of other topics on my hands." Although the film was a box office hit, Juno still humbly said, "The success should belong to the entire production team. The list of names I have to thank is really too long. I am the most pleased that this time has proven the Hong Kong film industry actually can accept even more subjects and new blood. (Are you checking the box office everyday?) I really don't want too much pressure. Lately I am used to turning off the phone and resting. Of course I really have received many friends' emails and text messages to congratulate me." Juno with his two lead actress Chin Siu Ho and Anthony Chan Yau will fly to Taiwan to begin a three day promotion. The media there are also interested in RIGOR MORTIS, thus Juno accepted many interviews to continue to promote in full force. He hoped when the film opens officially on Friday in Taiwan it will be more even successful. Very obviously, RIGOR MORTIS is a salute to Ricky Lau Koon Wai's 1985 film MR. VAMPIRE (GEUNG SI SIN SUN). As vampire films rose from the ashes, Director Lau is planning a vampire film for a March or April production start. He said, "Juno mentioned him film to me, actually film genre is a cycle. Vampires films were made from 1985 to 1990, viewers got tired. After such a long time they are mad again, naturally they are different. Actually I am in Guizhou to research some information on the Hmong minority tribe to add into the new film." He even said that he has already asked Tsui Hark to produce. The title tentatively will be VAMPIRE QUEEN. "Old Tsui is fixing the story now, and the title will change too. It is estimated to have foreign, Hong Kong and Taiwan artist participation." * (2013/11/05) Huang Xiaoming and Zhou Xun after working together on the film THE MESSAGE 3 years ago reunite in the Pang Ho Cheung directed romantic comedy EVERYONE LOVES TENDER WOMAN (SA GIU NUI YUN JUI HO MING). Pang Ho Cheung after experiencing the Hong Kong authentic romance LOVE IN A PUFF (JI MING YU CHUN GIU) and the half Chinese half Hong Kong LOVE IN THE BUFF (CHUN GIU YU JI MING) will add in Taiwan storyline into EVERYONE. Pang Ho Cheung and Zhou Xun knew each other from the short film that he produced in 2010, DEVIL NAIL CLIPPERS. At the time Pang Ho Cheung already hoped that Zhou Xun would star. He said, "If it has a good script and director, I have no problem at all. I can even reduce my salary." With the right script, will he invest? Sing Sing stated that he did not know about investing. Even for the script that he is writing now, he will not invest. He joked that he would save it for people who have more money than they could spend. * (2013/11/05) Gigi Leung Wing Kei last Saturday attended her friend Charlie Yeung Choi Nei's wedding in Saturday. Facing the black smoke in front of you, a type of fear grows inside you. I had a helpless feeling in a real fire, luckily I had ample training before hand." Yue Man Lok stated that this was the most difficult film that he has ever made. The director wanted realism and treated them like real firefighters. Everyday after the shoot he felt exhausted. He truly thought that firefighters should get a raise. Yam Tat Wa normally had more opportunity to fire a gun in films, this time he fired a fire hose. Everyone could express opinions as individuals; however, he also felt that the PAG response was indeed slow. He said, "Acting sooner would prevent such many speculations. I also don't believe that it has to do with Chi Wai's good relationship with TVB, how much could he make from TVB?" He felt that Anthony Wong Chau Sun would be suitable for the chair because he was willing and willing to act. Hui Koon Man who has not directed and starred in a long time said that he had several scripts on his hand, and he wanted to work with his film DELETE (DELETE OI YUN)'s co-star Wong Cho Nam. He said that since the "break up" with his brother Sam Hui Koon Kit, he could not find a compatible actor. However I was in so much pain I couldn't sleep, actually they have already begun to come out. I told my husband I didn't dare to sleep, as soon as I did I would wake from the pain. After several days I started bleeding, so I went to see the doctor again. He said it was completely opened!" Chen Wai Lam cried as she continued. Characters like Chin Siu Ho, Nina Paw Hee Ching, Anthony Chan Yau and Chung Fat all revolved around the theme of "homecoming" and won word of mouth. Vampires have come hom, can Hong Kong film regain its past glory? When the MR. VAMPIRE (GEUNG SI SIN SUN) theme son GHOST BRIDE (GWAI SUN LEUNG) began to play, faces that have been long missed, past vampire film pillars like Lam Ching Ying, Ricky Hui Koon Ying, Chin Siu Ho and Chan Yau, flashed in the minds of viewers. Although the "double Yings" have passed away, Juno asked the latter two along with two Best Actress Paw Hee Ching and Kara Hui (Wai Ying Hung) and THE GRUDGE's Japanese horror film master Takashi Shimizu as the producer to team up and create RIGOR MORTIS as a salute to 80s vampire films. The film then received invitations to participate in the Venice, Toronto and London International Film Festivals. Last Thursday it was released in Hong Kong and as of two days ago it already made 7.2 million with over 120,000 admitted. The film has become a hit and even began a new round of vampire fever. With more cheers than jeers online, especially with the camera use, scene and art designs, some online questioned whether the film came from Juno's hands. He smiled and said, "As a first time director, especially one who has always been a singer and an actor, it is absolutely understandable for others to ask this question. Like when a novelist suddenly becomes a director, I believe it is a conventional wisdom. From another angle it is still praise. Film has always been a marathon, the road is still very long and I will keep working hard." He admitted that because the pre production was very rushed, he did not have time to study other vampire films. "A lot of it was instant, views of the world that came from the heart, so I didn't study which part was which movie. RIGOR MORTIS had a very strong me flavor, we deliberately cleared out that world and started from zero. Even for what color tone a button and a table should be, they still went back to the director." He revealed that because of lowering his head for a long time to watch the monitor at work, he accumulated a neck injury. Sometimes it felt like it was on fire and he had to find a doctor for relief. Reportedly RIGOR MORTIS has already been sold to 80% of the overseas markets, Singapore, Malaysia, Taiwan, Korea and the U.S. while the European market was still in negotiation. Juno said, "I really couldn't have guessed how decent the performance has been, for a new director I have been very lucky." Will he abandon music to direct? He said that he had no preference. "No matter what they represent me, anything that comes from the heart is creativity. The record actually has already been done for several months, I even asked Nobuyoshi Araki to help with my CD cover." Will he strike the iron while it is hot? He said, "Creativity can't possibly be pushed, I just want to have new improvements every time. I don't want to trap myself into one role. At first when I worked on vampires, a lot of people said it was very risky as they felt vampires were big battle style, funny and the pace had to be very quick. However I wanted to talk about life." The more turbulent the society is, the more people reminisce about the good old days. Vampire film was a product of the 80s, it witnessed the glory days that Hong Kong films once had. Its decline also symbolized the ending of an era. Post 80s Juno directed this subject not only to satisfy his own cult desire but also to sincerely salute the genre. The casting alone already showed how much thought Juno has put into the film, as he asked MR. VAMPIRE's Chin Siu Ho and Lau Nam Kwong, MR. VAMPIRE IV (GEUNG SI SUK SUK)'s Chan Yau, NEW MR. VAMPIRE (GEUNG SI FAN SUN)'s Chung Fat to star. They were all vampire films' representative figures. Different from traditional vampire films, RIGOR MORTIS abandoned the comedy elements and in its place was a serious subject of examining the dark side of humanity. Yet salute spots could still be seen at every turn. For example the film opened with MR. VAMPIRE's theme song GHOST BRIDE; in the middle Chan Yau and Chung Fat teamed up to catch a ghost, tightening the rope and drawing the hex in one fell swoop; in the end the vampire acted up, Chung Fat rushed to pick Chan Yau's nose. It was also a salute to MR. VAMPIRE. The end credit even remembered Lam Ching Ying and Ricky Hui Koon Ying, saluting the two master class actors. Juno said that when he came up with the script, originally he had a story for Hui Koon Ying and Lau Nam Kwong. Regrettably it was unable to come to fruition. * (2013/11/02) Because HKTV did not receive a free television license, its artists faced unemployment. Stephen Shiu Jr. will make a black comedy GO DUNG FUT SIU MAU GAM YUT GEI (GOLDEN RICH KID PRISON DIARY) based on the internet novel A WORD IN AN IRON GRILE and invited HKTV artists Wong Mei Ki, Kwok Fung, Ai Wai and Deno Cheung Chung Chi to perform. At least they would have work opportunities. The film's producer Stephen Shiu Jr. two nights ago said that he sympathized with their situations, so he would provide opportunities. As for salary he said, "I will try to be as generous as I can, I hope to start production at the end of the year. After the new year a new film will go into production as well, (Julian) Cheung Chi Lam will star. I am looking for other actors, HKTV employees will have priority." * (2013/11/02) Charlie Yeung Choi Nei will wed today and become Mrs. Yau Siu Chi, ending the 19 year long love marathon. Charlie will wed today, her 3 sisters Leung Wing Kei, Lee Sinjie and Hui Yu Wan already arrived two days ago and had a meeting about the wedding. Lee Sinjie said that many of Charlie's friends came from different places, last night she arranged for dinner first for everyone to get to know each other. Thus they would have more fun at tonight's wedding banquet. Gigi revealed that after dinner they arranged for a bachelorette party for Yeung Choi Nei. she said, "Actually these few nights we talked until very late, Charlie is very happy." Will the wedding have traditional ceremonies? Gigi said that in principle Charlie hoped that everyone would be simple. For example they would not pick up the bride, but they would have tea ceremonies. Will Charlie go to her in law's home for tea? Lee Sinjie said that all ceremonies were estimated to take place inside the hotel. How was Yeung Choi Nei feeling? Gigi said, "She is very happy and relaxed." Yesterday the Sentosa W Hotel obviously strengthened security, often sending 6 to 10 security guards to station at the lobby and all entrances. When photographer Wing Shya (Ha Wing Hong) arrived, reporters flocked and the hotel interfered. Even Hong Kong reporters who were staying there were not permitted to wait at the lobby or take photos. The hotel would even contact the police and eject reporters from the hotel. Later Yeung Choi Nei's assistant represented Charlie and met with the press. She revealed that the bride to be was "very happy, very happy and very busy! The bride is busy with bride stuff, the groom is busy with groom stuff." She said that the couple last night had dinner with friends and family in the hotel restaurant and decorated it with South Sea tropical flavor. The wedding will be mainly in purple, which was also Charlie's favorite color. Originally she said that the new couple would permit the media to take one photo, but later she said that because Charlie and her soon to be husband had too many friends and family to take care of and were truly too busy, they could not make time to take photos. However they promised that after today's wedding they would accept media interview and photos. Yesterday Charlie's friend Anita Yuen Wing Yi and Siu Mei appeared at the airport. Len Len declined to reveal where she was going. Siu Mei said that Aaron Kwok Fu Sing due to work was unable to attend, but sent a short video to congratulate Charlie. What did Sing Sing give as a wedding gift? Siu Mei said, "It's really thoughtful, it was their first commercial together, a gift from the brand. It has already been 20 years, Sing Sing personally picked it." * (2013/11/02) Johnnie To Kei Fung and Kate Tsui Tsz Shan yesterday attended the Fresh Wave 2013 International Short Film Festival press conference. Tsui Tsz Shan said, "Very awkward! That day I have to work!" Tsui Tsz Shan was asked if sh was afraid that the TVB anniversary show rating would drop. She awkwardly said that it was beyond her control. She could only do her part. She was rumored to be the Malaysia Astro Award Best Actress favorite. Tsui Tsz Shan said, "I haven't received notice from the company that I have to go to Malaysia, let me campaign first!" To Kei Fung suddenly said, "Turn off the television first!" Tsui Tsz Shan awkwardly said, "Today you asked me to come to mess with me!" Speaking of Stephen Shiu Jr.'s claim that he would first hire HKTV employees for his movies, To Kei Fung said that it was very important to be able to help industry personnel and reiterated that HKTV's lack of license hindered Hong Kong creative industry development. "In the past when the two stations were competing, I once only slept 40 some hours in a month, but today's air wave has a lot of garbage, Hong Kong people need more choices!" * (2013/11/02) Zhang Ziyi revealed that lately she has been busy with John Woo (Ng Yu Sum)'s film and planned to attend the Golden Horse Award at the end of November. Two nights ago a celebration was held. He said that the box office was encouraging but he dared not imagine it would exceed UNBEATABLE (GIK JIN)'s 40 million. Reportedly he and his god father Willie Chan Chi Keung broke up as he fired his god father in a moment of rage? Mak Chun Lung denied the rumor. "Before attending the event I just spoke with Godfather over the phone. He is going to a Halloween party so he isn't attending. Our relationship isn't built on money and has nothing to do with work. We didn't start a company together, but I would discuss every plan with Godfather. He also has helped me a lot with RIGOR MORTIS." Nina Paw Hee Ching did not feel Mak Chun Lung and Chan Chi Keung were at odds. "On the day of the premiere, they were very close in their photos." As for ATV returning to series production, Paw Hee Ching said that she has not been invited yet. * (2013/11/02) Ronald Cheng Chung Kei two nights ago attended HONG KONG UNDERCOVER COP (MANG LUNG DUT GWING) wrap banquet. He was busy with his script for CHEUNG BO JAI, which he will direct and star next year. "I prefer (Louis) Koo Tin Lok for not needing to get a tan, so I asked him to play Cheung Bo Jai." Cheng Chung Kei said that his daughter was still little and hard to control, so she would not guest star. She did not have any desire to perform either. "She only loves to command what her parents wear, she is in charge." Chung Chung Kei and his wife Sammie Yu Sze Man had an understanding that they would try to have another child so their daughter would have a companion. Cheng Chung Kei later will perform in GOLDEN CHICKEN 3 (GUM GAI 3). He will play an ancient ducky (gigolo) but he did not need to make any sacrifice. With her fear of heights, Ava Yu Kiu in the film was blindfolded and hung over 10 stories above. She said, "The director said that he was so fat, after half a day of rehearsal he was still fine. So he told me not to worry. In addition I was already heavily insured." Yu Kiu hoped to work with the returning DaDa Chan Jing. She did not feel that DaDa has gained weight. Her figure was great so she did not need to lose weight. * (2013/11/01) Korean star Ji Jin-Hee two nights ago attended an event at Central. Reportedly, earlier when Ji Jin-Hee came to Hong Kong to work on a movie with Nick Cheung Ka Fai and Choi Si-Won. Although Hong Kong had plenty of great food, those who dined with Ji Jin-Hee said that he often did not eat. Once he dined with Choi Si-Won, Shawn Yue Man Lok and Cheung Ka Fai and he only had a few bites. "At dinner Ji Jin-Hee only asked Cheung Ka Fai how he trained to be muscular. He also asked some of the workers who were in shape how they maintained their figure. Very obviously he wanted to look better on camera and not to be too far off from Ka Fai and Choi Si-Won." Because Ji Jin-Hee had a lot of action scenes in Hong Kong, the diet actually made him faint once. The crew had to call for an ambulance and send him to the hospital. The doctor said that his blood sugar was low and luckily he was fine. As soon as Ji Jin-Hee recovered he returned to work. When asked, Cheung Ka Fai said, "How can I not know, he fainted right in front of me. (Do you know if he fainted from starving himself?) I am not going to say anything about other people, just that at the time I saw him faint. I was stunned for a moment and immediately gave him a hand." Although the film has been completed, Ji Jin-Hee continued to stay in shape. He revealed that on this tripe he dined with Jacky Cheung Hok Yau, Michelle Yeoh (Yeung Chi King) and director Andrew Lau Wai Keung, but they did not discuss any collaboration. Jackie Chan said, "My father daughter relationship with Jing Tian was a special on, the father was busy with his police work. In the end he neglected his daughter in life and made his daughter very rebellious. I was reminded of my 'Little Dragon Girl' because I have also neglected her for a very long time." Jackie Chan made a comparison of his neglect of his daughter with his son Jaycee Chan (Fong Cho Ming). He said, "I wanted to tell Cho Ming through this. Back then when you were in Hong Kong and I was making movies in the U.S., do you think I was living it up? Let me tell you, I was risking my life trying to make a living!" * (2013/11/01) DaDa Chan Jing in early August suddenly announced her retirement from show business, which made the Wilson Chin Kwok Wai directed LAN KWAI FONG 3 (HEI OI YEH PO 3) change the script and the cast; 3 months later, she suddenly received her manager Celia Sie Lim Chi's forgiveness and prepared for her comeback. Yesterday she left for a vacation in Thailand, then return to Hong Kong for a complete show business return. Chin Kwok Wai who DaDa "ditched" had reservation about whether they will work together again in the future, but blamed DaDa's manager Sie Lim Chi for her handling and the film company will demand compensation. Around 10AM, DaDa appeared at the airport with friends. She maintained her smile when she saw the press. Will she hold a press conference to announce her comeback plans? She said that the company will make arrangements. As for conditions of her return, including extending her originally 6 year long contract to 10 years, she said that she will explain at the press conference. She said that her 3 months out of work was very dull and felt that this experience made her understand herself even more. Because of the swelling from the medication, DaDa said that she was rumored to be pregnant. She indeed got fatter. Earlier she also had insomnia issues. Now her mood appears to be decent. Will she apologize for her sudden retirement's effect on the film production? DaDa said that she has contacted Pang Ho Cheung and will gradually contact and apologize to other directors. She handled the entire matter very poorly. She worried that directors would stay away from her. She could only let nature take its course, grasp more opportunities and work hard. Will she continue to make movies? She said, "I don't have anything else!" Chin Kwok Wai said that DaDa has not contacted him. An apology to him was a minor issue, the most important was her health. That day might have been her acting up on an impulse. Will he forgive her and work together again? He said that this circle was very small. He would treat her like a little girl and once she explained he would be fine. Her manager Sie Lim Chi had to bear more of the responsibility, her handling was terrible and the film company would seek compensation for monetary damage that the incident has caused. * (2013/11/01) Donnie Yen Chi Tan's son with former wife Leung Jing Chi, Jeff, was hospitalized for pneumothorax, but his father did not appear at the hospital. Yen Chi Tan's wife Cissy Wang explained, "I read the report, Chi Tan has always had a great relationship with Jeff and has always stayed in touch. He really took care of his son, I don't know why such a report would appear. When Jeff was released from the hospital, Chi Tan was already in Beijing, because he was too busy with his film he could not return to Hong Kong. Every parent would worry about his or her child. Chi Tan immediately communicated with the doctor at the hospital. The doctor told Chi Tan not to worry, Jeff's condition was great." Will Cissy communicate with Chi Tan's former wife? She said, "I felt that report was made up, as it claimed that a witness overheard it. The entire matter wasn't logical. Chi Tan and his former wife have been divorced for 18 years, but he has always been in contact with Jeff. Family comes first for our entire family. It's not good for reports to talk about the children. An artist has to face positive and negative news, but it's not good when the children are affected. Our relationship is great, no need to worry." Cissy revealed that Chi Tan stayed in contact with the hospital while in Beijing. She often sent text messages to Jeff to see how he was doing and found out that Jeff was already released from the hospital and his recovery has been ideal. * (2013/11/01) Chrissie Chau Sau Na and Hidy Yu Hiu Tung, DaDa Lo Chung Chi starred in the action comedy KICK ASS GIRLS (BAU 3 CHIU GIU WA), which will open on November 14. Sie Lim Chi's expression also eased and touched DaDa's arm. DaDa emotionally embraced Sie Lim Chi and cried for two minutes. Soon Sie Lim Chi showed her photo to DaDa, then picked up a pile of documents for both of them to sign. Then they had a heart to heart talk. I believe many members know that I can't do the job right, instead (Anthony) Wong Chau Sun is the more credible, Wa Jai (Andy Lau) also has a lot of leadership abilities. They are very ideal choices." Both he and Lau Tak Wa were chosen online as the "people's chief executive". He said, "No way! Wa Jai would do a better job. He has done it on film, it should be a piece of cake." Earlier Ronald Cheng Chung Kei revealed his drunk drinking. he admitted that he made a mistake before and urged everyone not to try it now. He would not do it again either. He said, "I won't be mad at Cheng Chung Kei, but maybe he got drunk too many times, he got a little confused. Back then I drove my car, he wasn't in my car. I told the story to him." Resigning as the PAG chair, Tsang Chi Wai two nights ago was asked about the Great PAG Earthquake as both Gordon Lam Ka Tung and John Shum Kin Fun resigned? One of the stops in BABY's Mainland promotion was his hometown Xiamen, but due to the intense schedule and his family was not there, he did not bring his girlfriend to meet his parents. Chin Yu BB explained the lack of exchange with Lam Fung on the stage was because the actors paired up in their appearance, it was crowded and they were in a hurry to go inside to watch the movie. Was she not used to promoting with her relationship? She said that as an actress, she could do nothing about film promotion. The film company made the arrangements. Did she recall happy days wit her boyfriend on the set? She said that she had more scenes with Sing Kwan and Kate Tsui Tsz Shan than she did with Lam Fung. Did her boyfriend visit the set? [ BLAH OF THE WEEK ] Columns, Reviews, Interviews 1. APPLE DAILY, NOVEMBER 3 2013, VAMPIRE FEVER VAMPIRE, UNFORGETTABLE Demons and monsters are terrifying, but demons in human hearts are even more horrifying. Juno Mak Chun Lung's film RIGOR MORTIS (GEUNG SI) wants to tell the "forgotten fear" -- in the film Siu Ho, Ah Yau, Aunt Mui and Ah Fung used every trick to prove their own existence. From a different angle, Chin Siu Ho, Anthony Chan Yau, Lau Nam Kwong and others excellent actors, with the vampire film's decline, were also forgotten in the world. This gang of acting veterans gathers today for only two missions: bringing glory back to Hong Kong and rekindle the fire in their hearts. - MAN KWOK CHUN Chin Siu Ho: Heavy Baggage Character: Over the hill star Siu Ho The vampire iron triangle of Lam Ching Ying, Ricky Hui Koon Ying and Chin Siu Ho today is only left with Siu Ho. RIGOR MORTIS was tailored for Siu Ho. With a semi-autobiographical color, he in the film was no longer the bouncing kid from over 20 years ago but a dark and rundown middle aged man. He reminisced his past glory. Still keeping his MR. VAMPIRE (GEUNG SI SIN SUN) costume, he gave the audience the wrong impression that it was his self projection. Siu Ho said, "Actually I don't always reminisce about the past, I am someone who looks ahead. However the director wants to bring back vampires to talk about rises and falls, so he wants me to have that depressed emotion." Siu Ho admitted that the decline of vampire films reduced his workload as well, which was just like the film's atmosphere. "At first I thought it was just my luck, later I realized that the environment around me was like this. Undoubtedly at the time vampire films were made until the genre was ruined, as time passed Hong Kong also made less films." With both success and failure from vampires, Siu Ho had the deepest emotions. "Vampire films made me a star, but it was a burden as well. Two or three years afterward I just kept making this type of films. Sometimes I would think, don't I have another type of talent other than vampires? Later I just stopped making them, I would rather go too Taiwan to play villains and make television series." RIGOR MORTIS brought life back to a group of classic icons. Was Siu Ho's will rekindled? He said, "I have always been confident in myself, but with this film I hope everyone would know that Chin Siu Ho has some acting aside from action films!" Siu Ho yesterday attended the film YOUNG AUNTIE (JEUNG BIU)'s screening in Tseung Kwan Ho. Speaking of the film RIGOR MORTIS's good box office and word of mouth, Siu Ho was excited. "It's very sharp, I am very happy. I never guess that it would turn into a fever. A kid tells me, saying that he went back to watch my movie MR. VAMPIRE, vampire has become another type of culture." However he said that despite the good response he absolutely would not make a sequel. Rating of Juno: For a new comer, he scored very high. Many people who have been directing for years still have no idea what they want to make. Anthony Chan: Homecoming Character: Retired priest Ah Yau After 20 years away from the silver screen, Chan Yau in the film played a retire priest who wore flip flops, shorts with a torn priest robe. He reek of grass root fragrance. His acting not only did not rust but also had more life experience. With a pair of glasses he looked like a mild mannered business man, drastically different from his film character. He admitted that business required logical reasoning and had a lot of pressure. This time he returned to Hong Kong to make a movie to take a breath. "Making movie is really a lot of fun, you don't have to think about anything." Chan Yau described himself as homecoming, "In the recent 20 years I have been working in the Mainland. Sometimes I would return to Hong Kong to meet up with friends and chat. I would feel like I was talking with them like a Mainland guy." Actually Chan Yau already had a plan to return to the local film industry. "I am still writing scripts, I want to come back and make some movies." Rating of Juno: He is very demanding and has many ideas. He excels in communicating with actors, which makes the production progress very smooth. Lau Nam Kwong: Helpless Over Film Cut Character: Cafe Boss Lau Nam Kwong is synonymous with being chicken, his vampire film credit could not be neglected. This time he returned, originally he had scenes with Hui Koon Ying. He played a Chinese opera theater laborer who supported the opera troupe with his diva brother Hui Koon Ying, unfortunately they were unable to in the end. He revealed that he "argued" with Willie Chan Chi Keung due to the size of the role, "That's right, earlier Juno said to me that there was a story for me and Hui Koon Ying, only in the end he was forced to make some changes. It was somewhat regrettable. Later when I found out that my role was so small, I really argued with them. However Chan Chi Keung thoughtfully explained the reason to me and convinced me, so I made it!" Rating of Juno: Past vampire films were a little scary, at suitable moment they would have comedy. This time when I heard Juno talk about how he wanted to make it, I thought kid are you for real, thinking to make it like this? In the end he succeeded! Nina Paw: God Class Pressure Character: Housing Estate Housewife Aunt Mui Sister Paw has never made ghost films. At first when the film company contacted her she made her refusal known. Later Juno's sincerity changed her mind. "Juno asked me to meet again, explaining that the film theme is about family love, he convinced me!" Sister Paw's performance in the film was breathtaking, in particular the four minute scene that was shot in one take in which she talked to herself, cried and laughed next to husband Richard Ng Yiu Hong's corpse. Her inner conflict, helplessness, sorrow and anticipation were all completely on display. She absolutely gave a Best Actress class performance. Speaking of the scene, Sister Paw said, "I actually had a lot of pressure from playing that scene, the pressure wasn't from unable to perform it but because the shot needed a lot of coordination. I remembered that was the only scene for the entire day, the slightest of mistake would keep the crew from getting off work." Rating of Juno: Juno on the set has no temper, in addition he has quite a set presence. He completely doesn't seem like a first time director. In addition when he talks to me about the script his voice is very low, very gentle and very irresistible. Kara Hui: Worries Vanish Character: Crazy Lady Ah Fung Winning the Best Actress award with AT THE END OF DAYBREAK (SUM MOR), Sister Siu Hung was well versed with thoroughly exhausting performance. In the film she originally was a happy young wife, one day three murders took place at home and she was driven to madness from the chilling scene. She took her ailing son and left the murder scene home. That emotion of having a home that she could not return to was all over her face. Actually Sister Siu Hung had her reservation about Juno at first. "At first Willie called me, saying that his godson was directing for the first time and asking me to help. I said no problem. Then when I went to the office I realized that he was Juno, I went in heart, huh can he do it?" Yet after two days, all the suspicion was swept away. Rating of Juno: He is very certain about what he wants and what he wants to shoot, after the first two days I was already completely at ease with him. 2. MING PAO DAILY, NOVEMBER 3 2013, FILM WORDS CHINA STYLE BLUE JASMINE Nowadays film viewers are lucky, with many channels to watch films. They can even randomly take a mobile phone to watch a movie or shoot video, the variety of film festival and retrospectives are countless. Yet they are so frequent that they become lost in the confusion, they also have the trouble of unable to watching them all. The 10th Hong Kong Asian Film Festival has opened, the Cinematic Legacy of East Europe is taking place, and the China Film Panorama 2013 will unveil tomorrow on Monday. FENG SHUI: Rich And Touching Like in past years, this year's China Film Panorama is mixed. Honestly some films are unbearable, luckily it always has good alternative films that perform decently but are unable to be distributed in the market. This time the opening film FENG SHUI is made outstandingly. A Wuhan family is lucky enough to make into a new home, but for ten years it has had nothing but bad luck. Some feels that the new home is located in thre cursed Feng Shui spots, hence the English film title is FENG SHUI. This film is not promoting superstition, drastically different from Hong Kong Feng Shui films. Fortunately its realistic and detailed depictions are full of drama with both sorrow and joy, involving affairs, couple cold war, mother and son relationship, director Wang Jing and screen writer Wu Nan made the film rich and touching. The most outstanding is lead actress Yan Bingyan. As the market beauty with a strong personality, she also develops a relationship with a mob boss. Wonderfully her relationship with her husband and son coincidentally is very similar to Cate Blanchett's in Woody Allen's new film BLUE JASMINE. Although one is in China and the other in the U.S. and one rich and the other poor, they both hold their own. I feel FENG SHUI that is made a year earlier is even better. Although it is not necessary the "Best National Film of 2012", it indeed is one of the best Chinese films. In the China Film Panorama CAMEL CARAVAN is a decent Chinese Western. As for the Taiwan Golden Horse surprise winner BEIJING BLUES, I still have not seen it yet and will discuss further after watching. (Three and a half out of five stars) BABY BLUES Recycles Old ideas And Lacks Surprising Hong Kong film BABY BLUES (NGAI YING) is veteran director Leong Po-Chih's return after a long hiatus. This Hong Kong television industry elder who grew up in England jumped to the film industry as early as 1976 when he and Josephine Siao Fong Fong worked together on JUMPING ASH (TIU FUI), a new style police film that was both a commercial and critical hit with her, Ga Lun, Chan Wai Man and others. It could be said as the forefather of the Hong Kong film new wave. Since then he directed FOXBAT (WU FOOK), SUPER FOOL (LUNG GUM WAI), BANANA COP (YIN LUN PEI PA), HONG KONG 1941 (DUNG DOI LAI MING), KEEP ON DANCING (GAI JOOK TIU MO) and other films. Raymond Lam Fung, Janelle Sing Kwan, Kate Tsui Tsz Shan, Karena Ng Chin Yu, Lo Hoi Pang, Irene Wan Bik Ha starred in the horror film BABY BLUES, which displayed Leong Po-Chih's still agile technique. However its subject of a haunted house toy doll that leads to a series of tragedy has been made in many foreign films, recycling it obviously is not surprising enough and is impractical. The story and the record industry creating a "murder song" that keeps on leading to deaths is inspired by the German film GLOOMY SUNDAY. Unfortunately it is hard to be truly heart pounding. BABY BLUES' performance is lacking, but it makes me miss that touching and twisting European nostalgia film. I also cannot help but reminisce the Wanchai Cine Art cinema that exclusively shown the film. RithyPanh Length : 90 mins. Opening November 4 2013 at the Hong Kong Asian Film Festival Site : http://www.hkaff.asia/rithy/The_Missing_Picture.html [ HONG KONG ASIAN FILM FESTIVAL ] Winner of the top prize in the Un Certain Regard section of the 2013 Cannes Film Festival, The Missing Picture is a haunting and undeniably bold documentary about the Cambodia genocide. The film depicts the teenage years of director RithyPanh, when his family suffered horribly beneath Pol Pot’s dictatorial regime. The picture, however, is “missing”. The only filmed images that exist from those years are Khmer Rouge propaganda, so Panh uses clay figures as stand-ins for himself, and also many Cambodians who would suffer atrocities at the Khmer Rouge’s hands. As a harrowing memoir of an oppressed people and a cinema experiment in representation, The Missing Picture is worthy of all its accolades, both past and forthcoming. INTRUDER d. A screenwriter heads to a resort deep in the snow-covered mountains for some alone time to finish his script, but strange and unexpected visitors keep showing up to disturb and possibly endanger him. When bodies are found in the woods, he realizes too late that the answer has been in front of him all along. LETTERS FROM THE SOUTH d. Her latest solitarian target: An old man who spends his time at home watching pornography. Nami grows progressively obsessed with the old man, and she soon crosses the line from peeping tom to kidnapper. Dealing with issues like religion, isolation, fetishes and even Japan's aging society, the latest film from Brazil-born Eiji Uchida is a wild genre mishmash that will make you laugh and keep you at the edge of your seats. PRINCESS SAKURA: FORBIDDEN PLEASURES d. Hajime Hashimoto Kyoko Hinami, Munetaka Aoki, Denden Length : 96 mins. Opening November 3 2013 at the Hong Kong Asian Film Festival Site : http://www.hkaff.asia/midnight/Princess_Sakura_Forbidden_Pleasure.html [ HONG KONG ASIAN FILM FESTIVAL ] The Japanese jidaigeki (period swordplay) genre gets an erotic twist with this wildly entertaining film. Model Hinami Kyoko stars as Sakura, a princess who is raped one night by a mysterious man. Despite only recognizing him by his tattoo, Sakura falls madly in love with her attacker, even to the point of getting the same tattoo as him. Soon, Sakura gives up her life of luxury and becomes a prostitute. Based on the kabuki play Sakurahime Azuma Bunsho, director Hashimoto Hajime’s experimental reinvention of this classic story of love and obsession comes with plenty of style and (very) dark humor. MISS ZOMBIE d. SABU (Hiroyuki Tanaka) Ayaka Komatsu, Makoto Togashi, Toru Tezuka Length : 85 mins. Opening November 3 2013 at the Hong Kong Asian Film Festival Site : http://www.hkaff.asia/midnight/Miss_Zombie.html [ HONG KONG ASIAN FILM FESTIVAL ] Imagine a zombie film in which the human characters are bigger monsters than the zombie. The latest film from director SABU (Bunny Drop, Postman Blues) is a gritty, black-and-white horror drama set in a world in which zombies can be sold as commodities. One day, one of these zombies, a scarred shell of a beautiful woman named Sara, is delivered to the Teramoto family. Working as a maid, Sara is ultimately exploited as a sex tool for the father and becomes the target of the mother’s scorn. SABU offers a refreshing twist to a familiar genre, making his zombie the most sympathetic character in this disturbing and surprisingly touching film. BLACK SQUARE d. Eventually, his younger sister Lihua also joins the search...A romantic film by a Japanese director that was shot entirely in Chinese and on location in Beijing. Cast and crew members who supported the project came together from Japan and China, fulfilling a collaboration with an abundantly handmade feel. But while he is captured one day and put in jail for the senseless murder of a soldier he committed with two childhood friends and accomplices, a suspicion of treachery – if not also the persistent threat of violence – soon plunges the freedom fighter into a downward spiral of physical and emotional torture. Is there really a stoolpigeon in their mix – and who could it be? The outrageous ending alone will blow you away. STRAY DOGS Can : Gau Yau d. Tsai Ming Liang Lee Kang Sheng, Yang Kuei Mei Length : 138 mins. Opening November 2 2013 at the Hong Kong Asian Film Festival Site : http://www.hkaff.asia/gala/Stray_Dogs.html [ HONG KONG ASIAN FILM FESTIVAL ] Tsai Ming Liang won the Golden Lion at Venice in 1994 with his second feature, Vive L’Amour. After almost two decades and a distinguished career as one of world’s preeminent auteurs, it seems only fitting that the Malaysian-born, Taiwanese filmmaker would pick up the Grand Jury Prize at the same festival with possibly his swan song, Stray Dogs. Tsai regular Lee Kang-Sheng plays an impoverished Taipei man who holds up advertising placards by day and lives in a deserted building with his two children by night. A kind-hearted supermarket staff helps out the kids, although things take a subsequent turn for the surreal as hints of regret and loss flood into the film. Its pair of ten-minute-plus final shots provide a haunting and strangely emotional conclusion to an oeuvre that, even when considered as part of the Slow Cinema movement, stands as one of a kind. THE LUNCHBOX d. Ritesh Batra Irrfan Khan, Nimrat Kaur Length : 104 mins. Opening November 2 2013 at the Hong Kong Asian Film Festival Site : http://www.hkaff.asia/newtalent/The_Lunchbox.html [ HONG KONG ASIAN FILM FESTIVAL ] Already hailed by many as one of the most charming Indian dramas in recent years, writer-director Ritesh Batra’s Mumbai-set debut tells the story of two lonely souls who are coincidentally connected over a mix-up in lunchbox service. Saajan is a grouchy and withdrawn widower who’s counting his days to retirement after 35 years in a joyless job; Ila, meanwhile, is a sad and neglected housewife despite being a wizard of a cook. As the pair of strangers begin pouring their hearts out to each other in the hand-written notes they hide in the wrongly delivered lunchbox every day, the film gently reveals itself to be a heart-warming tale on the sorrows of aging and the redemptive value of human connection. And as the characters whimsically suggest: sometimes the wrong train might just get you to the right station. WHY DON'T YOU PLAY IN HELL d. Sion Sono Jun Kunimura, Shinichi Tsutsumi, Hiroki Hasegawa, Fumi Nikaido Length : 126 mins. Opening November 2 2013 at the Hong Kong Asian Film Festival Site : http://www.hkaff.asia/midnight/Why_Don_t_You_Play_in_Hell.html [ HONG KONG ASIAN FILM FESTIVAL ] Sion Sono pays tribute to movie magic with a wild, blood-soaked comedy that the filmmaker calls a “requiem to 35mm film.” Ten years after a gangland massacre derails Mitsuko’s child star career, her father Muto attempts to give her a long-awaited comeback by casting her as the lead of an indie film. However, Mitsuko takes off in the middle of the shoot and massacre survivor Ikegami (Tsutsumi Shinichi) is back to take revenge. Now, it’s up to the film crew to bring Mitsuko back and finish the film – while trapped in the middle of a yakuza war. Filled with maniacal murderers and equally crazy filmmakers, Why Don’t You Play in Hell is easily Sono’s most playful film since Love Exposure. COMRADE KIM GOES FLYING Can : Siu Gum Tung Ji Seung Yiu Fei Lit : Little Kim Comrade Wants To Fly d. Kim Gwang Hun, Anja Daelemans, Nicholas Bonner Han Jong Sim, Pak Chung Guk Length : 81 mins. Opening November 1 2013 Site : http://www.hkaff.asia/asian/Comrade_Kim_goes_Flying.html [ HONG KONG ASIAN FILM FESTIVAL ] Comrade Kim Goes Flying is a fairytale in more ways than one. This is an unprecedented collaboration between three directors (one British, one Belgian, one North Korean) and countless North Korean colleagues who through belief and sheer force of will brought this Disney-esque tale to the screen. Professional circus performer Han Jong-sim underwent intense acting training to play Kim Yong-mi, a 28 year-old coal miner who gave up her dreams of being an acrobat to toil in the mines. But when she travels to Pyongyang, she’s instantly enchanted by the circus big top, the thrill of the trapeze, and the attentions of hunky acrobat Pak Jang-phil (Pak-Chung-guk). The feel-good movie of the year – for audiences and filmmakers alike! PAPER CANNOT WRAP UP EMBERS d. RithyPanh Length : 91 mins. Opening October 30 2013 at the Hong Kong Asian Film Festival Site : http://www.hkaff.asia/rithy/Paper_Cannot_Wrap_Up_Embers.html [ HONG KGON ASIAN FILM FESTIVAL ] RithyPanh’s Paper Cannot Wrap Up Embers is a revealing and sometimes cruelly honest documentary about lives that have become dehumanizing routine. Panh illuminates a lesser-seen, but not less vital segment of the Cambodian people, as he and his documentary crew follow disillusioned prostitutes living and working in Phnom Penh. Similar to S21: The Khmer Rouge Death Machine, Panh’s style is neither didactic nor lecturing but is instead a tapestry woven by his subjects as they reenact and comment on their daily drudgery. Serving as a silent witness, Panh’s camera nor his crew ever interfere, allowing these marginalized women to create their own indelible document. A COMPLICATED STORY Can : Yut Gor Fook Jap Goo Si d. When a heartbroken film school graduate, an unemployed UC Berkeley MBA graduate and a junior high school student converge at the music instruments store of an aspiring musician, quirky thoughts on everything from work and education to love and life emerge against a truly catchy soundtrack. Opening November 14 2013 at the Hong Kong Asian Film Festival Site : http://www.hkaff.asia/restore/The_Lonely_Wife.html [ HONG KONG ASIAN FILM FESTIVAL ] Considered by some critics to be Satyajit Ray’s masterpiece, The Lonely Wife represents the celebrated auteur at the height of his powers. Based on the novella “Nastanirh” by Rabindranath Tagore, and set in the late 1800s, the film concerns Charu, a housewife whose affluent lifestyle is marred by loneliness. Too busy with work, her husband Bhupati asks his cousin Amal to spend time with Charu. But soon their relationship blossoms into something stronger. Ray uses minimal dialogue and a masterful use of film technique to assemble this subtle yet deeply felt drama of unfulfilled longing and resigned frustration. Once cited by Satyajit Ray as his favorite among his own films. AGAIN d. Junichi Kanai Yagira Yuya, Yoshikura Aoi Length : 107 mins. However, a devastating incident brings Hatsumi’s world crumbling down, and the traumatized young girl now struggles to find solace in her life. But the group’s initial solidarity erodes as hunger, class tensions and the need for survival challenge their humanity. Based on a short story “Birinchibaba” by Bengali writer Rajshekhar Basu, the film tells the story of Birinchi, a “Babaj” (or saint) who claims to be ageless, and even says that he’s rubbed shoulders with Jesus and Buddha, not to mention taught Einstein the theory of relativity. Despite his outlandish claims, widower Gurupada Mitter and his daughter Buchki become Birinchi’s disciples, leaving Buchki’s spurned lover Satya with the task of outing the faux holy man. Ray shows his lighter side in this rich and delightfully-performed farce. BY THE RIVER d. Nontawat Numbenchapol Somchai Tongfah Length : 71 mins. The villagers' fight in court, one of Thailand's most high-profile environmental cases, lasted 15 years.
