MISCELLANEOUS * (2013/07/10) Jay Chou (Chow Kit Lun) for his musical film THE ROOFTOP created 35 new songs. With his second turn as a director, he has seen many musical films with outstanding song and dance numbers. Thus he put a lot of effort into making musical scenes logical. Chairman Chou and lead actress Li Xinai in the film sat dangerously on a three story tall speaker for romance. Their legs dangled in mid air. Li Xinai even kicked the bottoms of Chairman Chou's feet to scare him, which made his fear of height act up as he said "scary". Chairman Chou was not pleased with his own performance and asked to reshoot the next time. At first he even said, "It was too high, the film would be a little affected." Finally he admitted that actually he was afraid of heights. The scene had to be shot anew. After last week's film premiere, Taiwan's Cultural Department chief praised Chairman Chou's new film. "This is a very smart film. How can someone who knows art, knows emotions, knows commercial, and mixes a variety of elements together so well?" He even suggested that the film could be turned into a stage performance. Chairman Chou's friend and Taiwan Heavenly Queen Jody Chiang Hwei was busy with work and unable to attend the premiere. Chairman Chou asked the film company to give her an advanced screening. When she said Chairman Chou's eight pack abdominal muscles she immediately screamed. She said, "I like guys with single eyelids very much. Chairman Chou's character is very mesmerizing. His physique is also so well trained, His charm truly is irresistible!" * (2013/07/10) Huang Xiaoming and Angelababy earlier were rumored to have broken up, as sharp eyed internet users discovered that they stopped following each other's Weibo. Earlier Angelababy at a Beijing jewelry event lightly said, "If I respond to one news item after another, they will never end. My life now is very happy! As for my private life, I never talk about it. We will talk when I can talk about it!" The Baby starred A SENTIMENTAL STORY will soon open. She shared her personal production experience but displaying "handsomeness" was not easy. She said that she looked very handsome in those car chases, but actually after the shoot her legs had many bruises. When she walked she needed help from her assistant. However she still felt it was worth it. * (2013/07/10) Congratulations! 66 year old Josephine Siao Fong Fong became a grandmother. Yesterday she shared the news that her elder daughter Chang Hoi Kam and her American husband had a child in May and brought a new member to the family. Holding her grandchild for the first time she was both excited and nervous, she even praised that her grandson was a trendy baby. One of the "film fan seven princesses" Siao Fong Fong and her husband Clarence Chang Ching Fu had two daughters, elder daughter Chang Hoi Kam and younger daughter Chang Nga Kam. Hoi Kam in March last year wed her Irish American husband, Siao Fong Fong at the time even gave her son in law the Chinese name Tang Wai Lim. A year later, Siao Fong Fong announced good news again yesterday as Hoi Kam and her husband had a baby boy in May. The baby weighed 8 pound 3 ounces when he was born. He is named Ian Denyer with a Chinese name Chang Yat Chi. Ian is not just a heavyweight, he also looks exactly like her father. He is so cute that no wonder new grandmother Siao Fong Fong found it hard to part with him. When she held her grandson she looked pleased and tender. Siao Fong Fong's baby techniques have not become rusty over the years. Her grandson lay in her arms and slept very soundly. However, when Chang Ching Po held his grandson he was so happy that he was a little lost. His grandson could not help but wave his limbs around. Siao Fong Fong imitated her grandson Ian and said, "The first time Grandma Fong held me I was sweating like crazy and my hair was all wet; when Grandpa Fu held me his arms and legs were shaking, which made me shake as well. Papa and Mama were rolling on the floor laughing." Siao Fong Fong described becoming a grandmother as exciting, nervous and heart warming. she said, "Ian is a trendy baby. Because his papa is a foreigner, as soon as he was born his hair already had brown highlights. When he closed his eyes he looked like a foreigner, when he opened his eyes he looked Chinese. He also had a lot of expressions." When asked when her son in law's Chinese name was Tang Wai Lim but Ian's name was Chang Chi Yat? Siao Fong Fong explained, "My son in law is great. When he applied for a Hong Kong identification card, he changed his Chinese name from Tang Wai Lim to Chang Wai Lim. Thus Ian's last name is also Chang. Chang Ching Fu is very happy that his grandson has the same last name as he does." * (2013/07/10) After giving birth to three sons for the richest man in Hong Kong Li Ka Shing's younger son Richard Li Tzar Kai, Isabella Leong Lok Si after officially breaking up with Li Tzar Kai in February 2011 lived in Toronto, Canada with their three sons; during the period film lover Isabella has been rumored to make a movie comeback. Earlier she was rumored to star in Fruit Chan Gor's new film LOST ON A RED MINIBUS TO TAIPO (NA YEH LING SUN, NGOR JOR SEUNG LIU WONG GOK HOI WONG DAI BO DIK HUNG VAN), in the end Janice Man Wing Shan became the lead actress. However, Isabella yesterday "appeared" in support of her godfather Anthony Wong Chau Sun. Was she warming up for her comeback? Wong Chau Sun and Olivia Yan Wing Pui formed the Dionysus Contemporary Theatre and began classes. Yesterday they held a press conference. Two mentors Chung King Fai and Mo Chun Fai attended in support. They even revealed that Chau Sun was a crybaby; Chau Sun's god daughter Isabella, Nicholas Tse Ting Fung and Karena Lam Ka Yun were among those who went video well wishes. Isabella congratulated her Godfather Chau Sun on finally fulfilling his dream and even asked Godfather Chau Sun to save a spot in class for her. She said, "You have to save a spot for this student in future classes." Was she truly making preparation for her comeback? Chau Sun was asked if Isabella will return to Hong Kong in September to study acting with him? He said, "Next time, I don't know when. I heard her say that she had her arrangements. She will make an announcement. (Does Isabella want to act?) Very soon an announcement will come. That's all I know, I don't know anything more." Did he teach Isabella to start planning her comeback with classes? Chau Sun did not reply. He only said, "When would she have time to go to class? She is so far away. What is this, correspondence school?" Chau Sun revealed that Lam Ka Yun, Kate Tsui Tsz Shan and Jacqueline Chong Si Man have already enrolled in the class. In addition Dionysus Contemporary Theatre's first play will begin its run in May, an adaptation of HARRY POTTER star Daniel Radcliffe's play EQUUS. Hins Cheung King Hin will play the lead, for now they have not decided whether he will have to be fully nude. Chau Sun joked, "We are considering it. Even if we do it's not nudity for the sake of nudity. If we do we would dance in Macau. The drama troupe is not an exotic dance troupe." * (2013/07/10) Simon Yam Tat Wa's directing debut TALES FROM THE DARK (MAI LEI YEH) two nights ago held its premiere in Mongkok. Aside from live people in offering doll disguises for atmosphere, the film's actors Maggie Siu Mei Kei, Lo Hoi Pang, Susan Shaw Yam Yam and others attended. Qi Qi even made an appearance to support her husband and helped with giving away laisee to people. Friend Wai Ying Hung also dressed up in support and gave Yam Tat Wa a passionate hug to cheer him on. Yam Tat Wa revealed that during the shoot she scared Qi Qi for 30 days. He joked, "This time I brought my wife to scare her, I also want to see the audience reaction. During the shoot I already scared her for 30 days, at the time I was distracted. In the middle of the night I would go out to the garden to think about what angles I would use for the shoot tomorrow. I was so paranoid that I was possessed, she even thought I was sleepwalking. (Do you have any box office expectation?) I didn't think too much about it, I hope for 8 million yuan, with which I would be pleased already. It's more conservative." Would the film consider a sequel? Brother Wa revealed that he already read two Lillian Lee Bik Wa novels and currently it is in discussion. If confirmed, he might ask his wife and her model friends to guest star and for his wife to play the prettiest ghost. (Will your daughter also guest star?) No, I hope when she will direct she will work with me. She also asked me why I wasn't making children movies!" Siu Mei Kei lately has been caught on dates with her boyfriend Vinz Sze Cho Nam. Are they already married? Siu Mei Kei joked, "Not yet today, not yet tomorrow either because I will have to work tomorrow. Work comes first for everyone. (Has her boyfriend already proposed?) Even if he did I wouldn't tell you, the question is so hard to answer. (Are you waiting for your boyfriend to save up enough for marriage?) Great! Great!" Siu Mei Kei immediately changed the subject. Actually she was to take part in the TVB series that injured Steven Ma Chun Wai. She said, "Luckily he won't need surgery. The face is very important for an actor. I once injured my head for work. When I made the film ELECTION (HAK SEH WUI) Brother Wa had to kill me with a rock. Because there was no prop rock, Brother Wa finally used a real one to act with. I still had to take a few shots. Afterward when I got home I realized that I was bruised. Mommy immediately dragged me to see a doctor." * (2013/07/10) Joyce Cheng Yun Yi went to Malaysia to star in the Lunar New Year film HUAT AH! HUAT AH! HUAT! with Aniu. She said that she had quite a connection with Malaysia because her parents got together after working together there. In addition friends there were all very passionate, so she had a feeling of familiarity. This time her co-star Aniu and other workers were very attentive. Yun Yi remembered when she was little saw Aniu with her mother at work in Vancouver. When she mentioned this again, he did not know whether to laugh or to cry. The film will start production officially in two days, the main location will be some country places. The costumes and the acting will be very challenging, so Yun Yi looked forward to it very much. * (2013/07/09) Recently busy promoting his new film THE ROOFTOP, Jay Chou (Chow Kit Lun) yesterday continued to Chengdu. Chairman Chou hoped that the film will broke 100 million yuan at the box office. In addition, earlier in an interview he revealed that he was afraid of water, height and closed spaces. He revealed that for the film he had to climb onto a 3 story tall bull horn for romance. He stated, "It was too scary." The film had a lot of a musical elements. Chairman Chou created almost 40 all new songs, including the Nakasi style Taiwanese songs MONEY IS HARD TO MAKE and NIGHT MARKET WALK; the overseas team that he worked with did not dare to believe that he was able to shoot, act and create music on the set at the same. Chairman Chou joked, "When inspiration thrived it was quite a bother, because I didn't get to sleep." He even confidently said that fans could watch the film before deciding to buy the original soundtrack. * (2013/07/09) Flying nonstop to promote her film BLIND DETECTIVE (MAN TAM) earlier, Sammi Cheng Sau Man finally finished and now is "freed". Two days ago on Sunday after church, she spent the afternoon with her boyfriend Andy Hui Chi On. Meanwhile, Sammi promoted the film online on her own Weibo. BLIND DETECTIVE performed decently, after 4 days in release it made over HK$6.4 million and will soon pass 10 million. The iron triangle of Sammi, Andy Lau Tak Wa and Johnnie To Kei Fung remained Hong Kong audience's confidence guarantee. Sammi earlier posted, "All of the film promotions have been completed, as an actress all the homework before release has already been done. That feeling of relaxation is like successful weight loss. I will continue to be positive and active and very happily welcome everyday. (These few days I have not been feeling well, but that doesn't stop me from laughing because I don't have to go to work. Finally I can pig out on snacks! Haha!) Actually mi is more gluttonous than BLIND DETECTIVE Johnston!" Sammi indeed seemed to like this character very much. * (2013/07/08) Shawn Yue Man Lok and Kary Ng Yu Fei announced their break up after almost a year of dating. Earlier Kary was rumored to be "too intense" and made Yue Man Lok break up with her. Yesterday a new version surface as a magazine claimed that Yue Man Lok hooked up with his film SDU: SEX DUTIES UNIT (FEI FU CHOOK JING) topless Mainland actress Liu Anqi. After exchanging numbers they have been sexting each other. Kary got into an argument with him after finding out. Finally she could take no more and broke up with him, Yue Man Lok agreed right away. Yue Man Lok was upset that his love life has become a film promotional tool. Yesterday he posted online, "Promotions have many ways, but why does this way have to be used? Would hurting an artist truly make the film a big hit?" He blatantly accused the film company for promoting with his break up. His former girlfriend Kary supported Yue Man Lok's character on facebook. "Lately I saw different publications' continuous speculations. They not only twist the fact but also hurt us both. I will reiterate, he and I understood each other and broke up, all other reports are untrue. No one is more certain about this than me. I hope no one would again falsify news to harm others. I also hope that no one would read gossip magazines anymore. This society needs even more positive voices!" SDU director Pang Ho Cheung yesterday believed that the film company would not promote with Yue Man Lok's love life. He said, "This film is a Media Asia film release. Yue Man Lok is also a Media Asia artist. Why would it use his personal life to promote?" Would he call to console Yue Man Lok? Pang Ho Cheung humorously said, "I am making a movie, later I will call him to see if I can help him with an expedition!" * (2013/07/09) The Kim Yong-Hwa directed, Xu Jiao and Sung Dong-Il starred MR. GO 3D before tonight's premiere in Korea had Xu Jiao threw out the opening pitch two days ago at a baseball game. Yesterday she attended the media screening. She promoted her final film before going to study in the U.S. hard. The 20 billion won new film MR. GO will open in Korea next Tuesday. Japanese Best Actor Joe Odagiri who guest starred in the film yesterday arrived in Seoul for tonight's premiere. Xu Jiao arrived a few days earlier. Two nights ago she first appeared in the Jamsil Baseball Stadium for the Doosan Bears opening pitch. Yesterday afternoon Xu Jiao finally met up with director Kim Yong-Hwa and co-star Sung Dong-Il to attend the Seoul Coex cinema media screening and spoke with the press. The Korean media called "Asian Dakota Fanning" Xu Jiao naturally was the target. She revealed that after completing MR. GO 3D promotion she will study in the U.S. according to plan. MR. GO will be her final film for now. * (2013/07/09) Jacqueline Chong Si Man yesterday attended a footwear event. Speaking of Shawn Yue Man Lok recently rumored to be sexting with his SDU: SEX DUTIES UNIT (FEI FU CHOOK JING) co-star Liu Anqi and led to his break up with Kary Ng Yu Fei, Yue Man Lok yesterday blasted that someone used rumors to promote the film. Chong Si Man said, "With more promotions due to the film release, naturally even more people pay attention to his personal life. This is a package deal. I believe the film company and the director want to talk more about the film than rumors. Actually, film promotion naturally breeds rumors." Chong Si Man admitted that when she made THE BEST PLAN IS NO PLAN (KAU NUI BUT LEI SAM HING DAI) she was also linked with the director Patrick Kong (Yip Lim Sum). The media only asked if the director supervised and would not ask about the movie. She did not mind because she knew whether the rumor was true or not. She would only treat it like a film promotion. * (2013/07/08) The Wanda Cinemas and China Film Group invested film MAN OF TAI CHI after two days in released made around 13 million RMB. Although its box office was not considered ideal, Wanda Cinemas instead reduced its BLIND DETECTIVE (MAN TAM) screenings to make room for TAI. Two nights ago someone online claimed that he wanted to see BLIND in Wanda Cinemas and purchased a ticket and a snack package for 75 yuan, but the ticket showed 35 yuan for BLIND and 40 yuan for TAI. A box office theft was suspicious. Yesterday Media Asia said that it would follow up with the case. Mainland netizens blasted Wanda for its behavior. * (2013/07/08) Playing a boy in Stephen Chow Sing Chi's CJ7 (CHEUNG GONG CHUT HO), Xu Jiao will soon turn 16. Yesterday he went to promote the China Korean co-produced new film MR. GO. She wore a straw hat and a white dress then she changed into a baseball uniform for the first pitch at a baseball game at the Jamsil Olympic Stadium. Xu Jiao appeared with the mascot. Aside from the opening pitch, she also took three balls to juggle but she missed! * (2013/07/08) Singer Jonathan Wong Chee Hynn in the new film TALES FROM THE DARK (MAI LEI YEH) played a cop. Because the director was an expert in playing a cop, Simon Yam Tat, Jonathan thought that he could play a tough cop. In the end he played a new cadet who fainted at the sight of blood and even had to shoot fainting scenes many times. Jonathan during the shoot suffered minor injuries. Jonathan hoped to be able to play a villain in the future as well as studying Hung Kuen to display martial art prowess. * (2013/07/07) The China Film Group and Wanda Cinema invested, Keanu Reeves directed and starred film MAN OF TAI CHI cost 150 million RMB to make up but two days ago opened to only 5 million yuan (including late show revenues). Although the film was scheduled heavily at Wanda Cinemas, it unfortunately suffered from the gang attack of TINY TIMES, BLIND DETECTIVE (MAN TAM) and BADGES OF FURY (BUT YI SUN TAM). MAN OF TAI CHI due to poor word of mouth was not able to gain any lead at the box office. Keanu's directing debut bombed at the box office, much to the chagrin of many Mainland filmmakers. Before the opening, China Film Group and Wanda were still confident. Unfortunately the opening numbers in comparison to other films had quite a distance to make up. The Ko Chen Tung and Mini Yang Mi starred TINY after 8 days made 380 million. The Jet Li (Lee Nin Kit), Wen Zhang and Michelle Chen starred BADGES after 15 days made 260 million. BLIND DETECTIVE after two days made 35 million. It also made 3 million in two days in Hong Kong. * (2013/07/07) Someone earlier ran into Dior Cheng Yi Kin and Kelly Chen Wai Lam in Prague, Czech Republic and posted the photos online. In the photos the well dressed Chen Wai Lam and Cheng Yi Kin looked serious and were probably working on a movie. Since 2000's TOKYO RAIDERS (DUNG GAING GUNG LUEK) they have not worked with each other. Thus the photos led to furious online discussion as many looked forward to their collaboration. Reportedly Chen Wai Lam and Cheng Yi Kin indeed are working on a new film together, but the details are to be announced. * (2013/07/07) Sammi Cheng Sau Man recently promoted her new film BLIND DETECTIVE (MAN TAM) hard. Aside from attending promotions everywhere, she also kept making posts online. Two nights ago Sammi posted a photo with co-star Andy Lau Tak Wa. "Sorry. Advertising is expensive! mi can only promote BLIND DETECTIVE hard online. Making BLIND DETECTIVE indeed wasn't as easy as I imagined. I appreciate that the script is able to show the many sides of mi. As an actress, my dream doesn't just stop with comedy. However I know the importance of every step and every foot print. If the character of Ho Ka Tung can bring out your laughter, draw you in and touch you, mi has no regret about this performance. Hee hee!" * (2013/07/07) Sylvia Chang (Cheung Ngai Ga) and Ann Hui On Wa last night both received from the Hong Kong Federation of Women the "Hong Kong Women of Excellence in the Six Arts" awards to honor their achievements and contributions. Cheung Ngai Ga and Hui On Wa both liked to play films about women. They have always admired each other and are looking forward to work together again after their collaboration several years ago; unfortunately they were both on their each own and no plan has been confirmed yet. They joked that before retirement they will definitely complete it. Cheung Ngai Ga revealed her other plans. "I will adapt my previous play into a film script for (Johnnie) To Kei Fung to direct at the end of the year. He and I started working together with ALL ABOUT AH LONG (AH LONG DIK GOO SI) and have known each other for over 20 years. We already have chemistry and don't have to worry about arguments." Speaking of To Kei Fung expressing his displeasure for Mainland film promotion style earlier and blasted the Shanghai Film Festival for not respecting him, she said that she has never participated in any Mainland promotion and did not know about the details. Aside from film work, she also had to take care of her family. She had no time for more promotion or film festival. Thus she had no idea. Hui On Wa said that in recent years she injected her personal experience into her work, for example A SIMPLE LIFE (TOH JEH) was the issue of her fear about facing aging. She said, "I haven't considered writing an autobiography, wait another 20 years! I want to work with Cheung Ngai Ga again the most, I plan to tailor a script for her to star in. Can we switch our roles with me acting on screen? Definitely not, because I won't want to drag others down." * (2013/07/07) The John Woo (Ng Yu Sum) directed epic film THE CROSSING cost 300 million yuan RMB and starred Chinese, Korean and Japanese stars like Takeshi Kaneshiro (Gum Sing Mo), Huang Xiaoming, Zhang Ziyi, Song Hye-Kyo and Masami Nagasawa. With more than 50 years of recent Chinese history, the story is about three couples of different backgrounds and nationalities and how the tides of history affected them. Although they experienced war and hardship, they were still able to find happiness. The film yesterday officially began production in Huairou, Beijing with Ng Yu Sum, Gum Sing Mo, Bowie Lam Bo Yi, Faye Yu Feihong and others as they prayed for a smooth production. Zhang Ziyi and Song Hye-Kyo were not present. Gum Sing Mo chatted a storm with Ng Yu Sum, then had serious discussions with him. He and Lam Bo Yi also shook hands and greeted each other. As for outside comment that he gained weight, he did not seem to care at all. Earlier in an interview he admitted, "If I spent time and energy on my looks, I feel I might as well put an effort into contributing to society." * (2013/07/06) Businessman Peter Chan Chun Chuen was found guilty of forging the late Chinachem chairwoman Nina Wang (Kung Yu Sum)'s will and yesterday was sentenced to 12 years in prison. Actually Chan Chun Chuen's "legendary story" not only caught the attention of the entire city but also the eyes of many filmmakers, who are fighting over a film production about Chan Chun Chuen and Nina Wang when the case came to an end. Stephen Shiu Jr. intended for Stephen Gan Fock Wai who bares an uncanny resemblance to Chan Chun Chuen to team with Kitty Yuen Siu Yi to reprise the story. Gan Fock Wai texted after finding out, "Greed would only bring more trouble and pain." Chinachem Group founder Teddy Wang's kidnapping case in 1990 was made into the film CRIME STORY (CHUNG ON JO) and KIDNAP OF WONG CHAK FAI. In 2007 Chinachem's chairwoman Nina Wang passed away and some filmmakers wanted to make a movie about her life. However business Chan Chun Chuen revealed his love story with her, which led to his forging of her will and prison. The greed led to poverty ending was even more attractive. Yesterday Chan Chun Chuen was found guilty of forging Nina Wang's will and sentenced to 12 years. Many filmmakers wanted first dibs on a movie about him, including film company boss Stephen Shiu Jr. and the film KICK ASS GIRLS (BAU 3 CHIU GIU WA) producer Charlie Wong Wing Fung. Stephen Shiu Jr. yesterday admitted his intention to make a movie about Chan Chun Chuen and thought Gan Fock Wai would be perfect for the role due to their striking similarities. He would be paired with Kitty Yuen Siu Yi who has been called the most suitable to play Kung Yu Sum online. Stpehen Shiu Jr. said, "I am interested in this subject. I feel Gan Fock Wai resembles the male lead. I read online that Siu Yi was the most suitable for the female lead online. Ultimately this love story began in middle age, the leads could play from the beginning to the end." Stephen projected that the film budget would at least be 10 million. He explained, "Because the story had to deal with their extravagant lifestyle, it will at least be 10 million!" Producer Wong Wing Fung who just finished the film KICK ASS GIRLS was also interested in striking the iron while it is hot. He said yesterday, "We keep meeting these few days with plans to make a movie about Chan Chun Chuen. This truly is the talk of the town. Everyone knows about his love story. We want to call the movie TIM TIM WAN NEI OI (SWEETIE WANTS YOUR LOVE). The title isn't a reflection on anyone, just how sweet the love story is. We want (Joel) Chan Shan Chung, whose performance would be more relatable. We are considering the just unmasked Lung Siu Kwan as a co-star because she gives people an impression of mystery, which is very close to the mysterious story's female lead. We plan to make this 20 year long love story. The old version of the female lead will be Aunt Ha Wai (Wong Ha Wai). Viewers want to watch hardcore movies. We want the director to be Lam Man Chung with his comedic sense. The budget will be around 10 million." Although he was the most suitable choice to play Chan Chun Chuen, Gan Fock Wai was not interested. He texted in response, "Do you think I will make it? Of course I won't. Everyone please respect people who have passed away already. I will pray for her and wish for her to reach Sukhavati soon." As for his view on Chan Chun Chuen's sentence, he replied, "Greed would only bring more trouble and pain." As for Siu Yi, she joked, "I am already under the control of (Henry) Tang Ying Nin's old lady (once she was said to resemble Mrs. Henry Tang)! If it's true then I would talk with the company. Because with jobs like these often the company makes the decisions." Siu Yi had no comment about Chan Chun Chuen's sentence. Chan San Chung also declined to comment on being asked to play Chan Chun Chuen. "I have no comment. I also didn't know he was sentenced." * (2013/07/06) Taiwan Heavenly King Jay Chou (Chow Kit Lun) after THE SECRET (BUT NUNG SHUET DIK BEI MUK) again wrote, directed and starred in the musical THE ROOFTOP . The film will be released on the 11th in the Mainland, Malaysia, Singapore and other locations simultaneously. Yesterday Chairman Chou, lead actress Li Xinai and producer Will Liu appeared at the Shanghai premiere. Chairman Chou took care of everything from directing, acting, composing, costumes, action choreography to editing himself, but Chairman Chou admitted that the action choreography was the most difficult because the action had to follow the beat. He also revealed that he originally was very worried about Li Xinai's performance because she had no acting experience. Yet as her acting gradually improved, he relaxed. Earlier Chairman Chou while promoting in Wuxi boasted that he would score his film over 100 points and described it as "three good movie". "Good with word of mouth, good with box office, good with award. Recently many movies have had high box office but not too good word of mouth. (Do you think it will win an award?) I didn't win any directing award before, just a new comer award." He also admitted that the film and music making processes were drastically different. Film production was a group collaboration but song writing was solo. "I have been bored and alone for a very long time. I don't have any siblings, so I like to work with good friends. In the film the redhead character was my middle school classmate." * (2013/07/06) Simon Yam Tat Wa was "promoted" to a director, as he wrote, directed and starred in one of the stories in TALES FROM THE DARK (MAI LEI YEH). Never watched a supernatural film he instead had more imagination to make the film. Because he was too focused, he became paranoid. Since the shoot he has not had a good night sleep. However as soon as he saw his daughter, his negative emotions would be swept away. Earlier he spoke with the Cable program Film Montage and was asked if he enjoyed directing? Brother Wa bitterly laughed and said, "After completing it and watching it again I enjoy it, but during the 40 days of the shoot it really wasn't fun. I couldn't sleep at all. I was restless and terrified. Now I understand what 'suspicion breeds hidden ghost' is. The more you think there is ghost the more you have. Horror actually comes from people's conscience." * (2013/07/06) Johnnie To Kei Fung has always insisted on principles. He never goes to cinemas for meet and greet and does not like to attend award ceremonies. However earlier he attended the Shanghai International Film Festival. Two days ago when he promoted his film BLIND DETECTIVE (MAN TAM) in Wuhan he was asked about it and helplessly shook his head. He said, "I will never go there again." His explanation was simple. "It's not a real film festival. It doesn't respect film." BLIND DETECTIVE has not had any cinema audience appreciation like other films. To Kei Fung said, "I don't understand why directors run around cinemas. If only this way can attract viewers, what kind of film is it? I have been to cinemas several times and already know how this game is played. I don't want to go anyway." He also criticized that some young actors do not know how to act or what film is! He joked, "You see how long I have worked with Lau Ching Wan. How handsome is he?" Some reporters nodded. Wai Ka Fai said that in the eyes of Amy Kwok Oi Ming, Lau Ching Wan is a hunk. To Kei Fung said, "She's blind!" BLIND DETECTIVE two days ago opened in Hong Kong and China simultaneously. Its Mainland opening day box office was near 18 million RMB. In Hong Kong with the earlier advanced screening the film netted almost HK$20 million. * (2013/07/05) Yesterday DaDa Chan Jing appeared at the airport to fly to New York for its Asian Film Festival. Earlier due to her less than fluent English, DaDa became the laughing stock. On this trip she brought along English books so she could catch up and make up for past embarrassments. DaDa said that she brought 10 sets of clothing in hopes of being at her best every second. She even joked to take the chance to run into Jay Chou (Chow Kit Lun). DaDa said, "I know Chow Kit Lun's THE ROOFTOP will be the closing film, so I very much look forward to running into him there. Then I will definitely take the chance to make more opportunities." DaDa recently worked with Susan Shaw Yam Yam again on the film TALES FROM THE DARK (MAI LEI YEH) she performed in a Fruit Chan Gor directed segment. Two Hong Kong Film Award Best Supporting Actresses again set off sparks in the film. Sister Yam Yam praised DaDa's outstanding acting that opened her eyes. "She was born to be in our business. Working with such a young out of the oven Best Supporting Actress, I feel very fortunate. After Ah Mui (Anita Mui Yim Fong)'s passing, I haven't seen any actor who could play different characters. Working with her, I felt I got a lot of out of this life. I really like this script, in addition Chan Gor is the director. It absolutely is a Heaven sent chance." DaDa was very touched to receive Sister Yam Yam's praise. "I am very happy. Actually we interacted, without her my acting couldn't be brought out. Earlier we worked together on a comedy, this time is my new attempt." In TALES FROM THE DARK, three thugs raped DaDa. She said that this scene was the most memorable. "At the time I was so scared that I cried. Because rape scenes ultimately involved physical contact, and it had to happen in such a small place like a car truck, I was bruised all over." * (2013/07/05) Korean star Song Hye-Kyo earlier came to Hong Kong to promote her series THAT WINTER, THE WIND BLOWS and to attend a skin care product event. During her interview she clarified her dispute rumor with THE GRANDMASTERS (YUT DOI JUNG SI) director Wong Kar Wai. Actually while Song Hye-Kyo was in Hong Kong, she had dinner with Wong Kar Wai. According to Korean reports, Wong Kar Wai found out about Song Hye-Kyo's Hong Kong visit and contacted her. He not only took her to dinner but also the Korean workers. Song Hye-Kyo and Wong Kar Wai also took photos together. She smiled brilliantly and leaned on Wong Kar Wai's shoulder. She even raised a victory sign, proving that the dispute was just a joke. In addition, Song Hye-Kyo tomorrow will start work on her new film LOVE AND LET LOVE with director John Woo (Ng Yu Sum), Takeshi Kaneshiro (Gum Sing Mo), Huang Xiaoming, Zhang Ziyi, and Masami Nagasawa. * (2013/07/05) The Angelababy starred film A SENTIMENTAL STORY will soon be released in the Mainland. She will play a female cop for the first time. Since she took this film 3 years ago, she said that at the time she was a film industry new comer and had "nothing to lose". Thus she removed her burden to play this character. Director Gao Qunshu also praised her. "The most exciting part in the film is growth." Baby recalled when she made the film, she thought in the film she saw her own gradual growth process, from starting out green to facing more and more experience in life and hiding more and more feeling. This film had many emotional scenes, which to her was an enormous challenge. Baby also had a memorable car chase and gun fight. Although at the time she shot on and off for a month, her legs were filled with bruises. She joked that every time after work her assistant carried her back! * (2013/07/05) Director Fruit Chan Gor will adapt the popular internet novel LOST ON A RED MINIBUS TO TAIPO (NA YEH LING SUN, NGOR JOR SEUNG LIU WONG GOK HOI WONG DAI BO DIK HUNG VAN) for the big screen. The film version RED MINIBUS recently has already begun production. 17 actors (the driver and 16 passengers) were crowded into a red minibus for a very cheerful production. Chan Gor originally intended for the mother of three Isabella Leong Lok Si to make a comeback to play the female lead Yuki, but she turned down the invitation; he switched the target to Fiona Sit Hoi Kei, who was unable to make it due to her recording schedule. The chance to play Yuki finally fell to Janice Man Wing Shan. Although she was the "third choice", as long as the character had potential she might have gotten lucky. They spent their first day of work on the reb minibus. Many were on hand, which made the set very cheerful. Wai Ying Hung and Man Wing Shan shot group photos with the red minibus from different angles; Man Wing Shan even posted a video on Instagram, as each actor introduced his or her character. RED MINIBUS fans also discussed each actor. Some commented on Man Wing Shan playing Yuki and said that she was pretty and suitable for the character. RED MINIBUS also shot on Water Street in Sai Wan. Aside from the red minibus, an armored car also appeared. Aside from lead actress Man Wing Shan, Wai Ying Hung, Wong Yau Nam, Tsui Tin Yau and Simon Yam Tat Wa were among the actors who were present. They were in full costumes for the big scene as they entered a supermarket in protective clothing. Because the shoot attracted onlookers, someone posted photos online; in particular Golden online users were extremely concerned about RED MINIBUS, as they studied whether they were shooting a "SARS" or radiation scene. LOST ON A RED MINIBUS TO TAIPO was an internet novel that was both science fiction and suspense. The writer was Pizza. In the story the lead Yau Chi Chi (Wong Yau Nam) on a certain night takes a red minibus from Mongkok to Taipo. After crossing the Lion Rock Tunnel he realizes that all the people and cars has vanished out of the blue, leaving only the minibus and its passengers. Hong Kong has become a ghost town. Then mysterious events take place, and a mysterious person of an unknown origin appears with a gas mask. Some of the passengers die without cause. They have to resolve the mystery to have any hope to return to the real world. * (2013/07/05) The film SDU: SEX DUTIES UNIT (FEI FU CHOOK JING)'s four lead actors Chapman To Man Jat, Shawn Yue Man Lok, Matthew Chow Hoi Kwong and Derek Tsang Kwok Cheung in the film went to patronize prostitutes. Only Lok Jai and night club "daughter" have a romance. Director Pang Ho Cheung said, "Lok Jai has a way with the ladies. Among the four male leads he resembles me the more, he's handsome enough! His character is tailor made." In the film "Mamasan" introduced a new daughter to Lok Jai and had to remove her clothing for him to "inspect". They awkwardly stared at each other and began fond of each other, but they did not have any physical contact. Lok Jai said that this was the first time he faced a topless woman in a film. The director asked him to keep looking at her chest, but he felt embarrassed and avoided staring at her chest as much as he could. His co-star was Central Academy of Drama student Liu Anqi, who was selected for her figure as well as her innocent looks. For the strip scene, the director cleared the set. She also praised Lok Jai as a gentleman and thus she was able to perform at ease. * (2013/07/05) Chapman To Man Jat became a spokesperson for a fast food chain. 10 years ago Ah Jat was this fast food shop's spokesman. The selection included Best Actors and new comers, finally To Man Jat was chosen because Ah Jat's facebook post had over 10,000 likes. He was quite a draw. In addition in recent years his image has become professional and mature, willing to speak up with depth and care for the community. He was the role model for young people. Working together again after 10 years, did Ah Jat's salary get a ten fold raise? He joked, "I am happy when I eat!" This time he led Emperor girl group OMG and personally demonstrated his Best Actor acting. One smile had different expressions for the director to choose from. The ladies surrounded him to learn. * (2013/07/04) Ronald Cheng Chung Kei two years ago got married and became a father. Thanks to the luck that his daughter brought, last year he won the Hong Kong Film Award Best Supporting Actor with VULGARIA (DAI JOOK HEI KET). Cheng Chung Kei said that from now on he would spend more time in the film industry. After SUM SEUNG SI SING (WISHES COME TRUE), at the end of this year he plans to direct with Gordon Chan Ka Seung the new film JEUNG BO JAI. In the film he will play a pirate. Louis Koo Tin Lok will play Cheung Bo Jai and the female lead will be Sammi Cheng Sau Man. They will all be pirates in the film. In the film female pirate Sammi admired Cheung Bo Jai, after marrying him they became the lord and lady of the sea and specialized in robbing merchant ships. Actually this film has been in pre production for years. At fist Chan Ka Seung asked LeTV to invest, with Cheng Chung Kei as Cheung Bo Jai. Later LeTV thought the production cost was too much and turned it down. Then Milky Way Hairun became the investor. Even the lead was changed. This company consisted of To Kei Fung's Milkyway and Mainland's Hairun Pictures, the film budget will be around 70 million. Cheng Chung Kei's manager Tin Kai Man yesterday said, "This film has been in pre production for several years. Now the script is still being written and the production is still waiting for approval. If everything goes well, hopefully it will start production at the end of the year. Ronald is already ready for it." * (2013/07/04) The new film BLIND DETECTIVE (MAN TAM) has been promoting in the Mainland, but Andy Lau Tak Wa had to bid Sammi Cheng Sau Man and Johnnie To Kei Fung farewell temporarily as he promoted in Nanjing with Mainland actor Guo Tao. Without his perfect partner Sammi, even he joked, "I really feel a little lost, like I lost a hand." At the same time he had nothing but praise for his co-star Guo Tao, who did not forget to return the favor. "Heavenly King Lau is the Hong Kong Best Actor who I have wanted to work with the most. I never expected Director To to able to fulfill my dream so fast." In addition, the Wa Jai invested film SINGING WHEN WE ARE YOUNG held a Beijing premiere. Because of scheduling issue he was unable to attend but he recorded a video for the occasion. He even revealed that his first love began at age 15, at age 18 he experienced the pain of a break up. He even encouraged director Liu Juan. "As a new comer, the box office is unimportant. What is important is to be able to express that feeling in your heart." * (2013/07/04) Juno Mak Chun Lung's directing debut RIGOR MORTIS (GEUNG SI) will be released at the end of October. The film mixed Japanese supernatural and Hong Kong local zombie film specialties into a horror film, with stars Wai Ying Hung, Anthony Chan Yau, Richard Ng Yiu Hong, Nina Paw Hee Ching, Lo Hoi Pang and others. The RIGOR MORTIS trailer has been released on many U.S. film sites, with its share of bloody scenes and animated effects it received raves online and was looked forward to. Juno said, "This time the film took two years to plan and half a year to produce. Orange Sky Golden Harvest will distribute the film. The Hong Kong classic film MR. VAMPIRE (GEUNG SI SIN SUN)'s original film company was Golden Harvest. This time I created RIGOR MORTIS to salute this soon to vanish film genre and age, so I felt it was destined." * (2013/07/04) The Chapman To Man Jat starred THE MIDAS TOUCH (CHIU CUP GAING LEI YUN) will be released in the summer. In the film Ah Jat turned from debt collector to manager, with his banner was "the most rotten girl group in history" Oh My Girls; he also had to battle with gold label manager Charlene Choi Cheuk Yin. Ah Jat gave his all for the performance, he went topless and was felt up. Later he joked that he was fully taken advantage of, he was the sexiest performer in the film and should demand a raise. His topless scene was a birthday surprise from 8 models and Ah Sa. Christie Si Xuan wore sexy sleep wear to seduce him but actually was playing a prank on Ah Jat. Finally the 8 models felt up Ah Jat all over. After the shoot Ah Jat said, "Great!" A normal massage only had a pair of hands, he never had the experience of a massage with 8 pairs of hands. The girls also praised Ah Jat's body as soft and great to touch! Ah Sa said that she was the happiest about the cake toss and pillow fight scenes. She was able to make a mess on an official capacity; she said that when she saw Ah Jat was covered in cotton, he was a white, fluffy and cute sheep. * (2013/07/04) The first half of 2013 (January 1 to June 30) Hong Kong film market overall continued to rise as the total box office reached HK$764,968,372. [ BLAH OF THE WEEK ] Columns, Reviews, Interviews 1. MING PAO DAILY, JULY 7 2013, FILM WORDS TO STYLE BLIND DETECITVE IS VERY NOIR CRAZY This summer Hong Kong film's first shot BLIND DETECTIVE (MAN TAM) is Johnnie To Kei Fung directed, Wai Ka Fai, Yau Nai Hoi and others written, Andy Lau Tak Wa and Sammi Cheng Sau Man's fourth To film production. 13 years ago their first collaboration NEEDING YOU (GOO NAM GUA NUI) made them a popular team. Then came LOVE ON A DIET (SAU SUN NAM NUI) and YESTERDAY ONCE MORE (LUNG FUNG DAU). This new film is not the NEEDING YOU type office romantic comedy that caters to women, but an extreme odd man movie. To and Wai develop their noir case specialty anew and are obviously weird and excessive. They even mess with vomiting, toilet humor, sadomasochism. Not everyone would like the film, but it is thoroughly wild, in comparison to his previous Northern work DRUG WAR (DUK JIN) it is even truer to To's nature. BLIND DETECTIVE: Andy Lau Impersonates Al Pacino Lau Tak Wa plays a former Hong Kong cop who has to retire due to the loss of his slight and becomes a genius detective. In the film he and female cop Sammi Cheng Sau Man become happy rivals as they investigate a series of cases from Hong Kong to Macau and Zhuhai. They involved an acid case, a hammer case, a crazy grandmother and a taxi serial murderer. It also has several relationships. The most curious and the wildest is the missing girl who illegally immigrated to South American and returned with a different face over a decade later. It also has Mainland stars Guo Tao and Gao Yuanyuan in a dance school tango love triangle. The story is very rich and colorful. The blind detective lead is often frustrated and gluttonous. His favorite is stinky sausage. He also lkes to play tricks on his female partner, which makes Cheng Sau Man love and hate him. The entire film truly is constantly making filthy parodies and shows no mercy to women. This is Lau Tak Wa's especially out of place wild performance, which is truly excessive. However it is better than his James Bond style hero in SWITCH (TIN GEI: FU CHUN SHAN GUI TOH) and Tony Leung Chiu Wai's THE SILENT WAR (TING FUN JEH) blind genius. Speaking of which, in the past many Chinese and foreign films have been about the blind. Both Josephine Siao Fong Fong and Audrey Hepburn have played blind girls. Japan's ZATOICHI was also very famous. Al Pacino in SCENT OF A WOMAN as a retired blind U.S. soldier was also very exciting. This time Lau Tak Wa's blind driving and dancing were obviously impersonations of him. Ben Affleck in DAREDEVIL played a blind comic book hero but the film failed. Personally, I think BLIND DETECTIVE has too much stench and frustration. I like the Lau Ching Wan starred THE DETECTIVE and LIFE WITHOUT PRINCIPLE more. Yet To Kei Fung undoubtedly has captured a strong noir style. Lau and Cheng's performances are also full of emotions and effort. The film has many love crazed and murderous characters. The three generation family of women was the craziest. The film also had many male killers. Suffice to say, this is an absurd comedy that is full of male and female murderers, handicapped and mentally disturbed people. (three and a half out of five stars) A STORY OF YONONSUKE: Likable Leads The Japanese new film A STORY OF YONONSUKE does not get as much attention as MIDSUMMER'S EQUATION release last week but actually is rather special. This film is adapted from best selling Japanese writer Shuichi Yoshida's novel about Yokonmichi Yonosuke who went from a fishing village to study at an university in Tokyo. He was innocent and straight laced, a joy to anyone who has met him. Star Kengo Kora is actually handsome, playing a dorky hunk he is rather likable. In the story he has wonderful encounters with his classmates including a buddy, a gay student, a rich daughter and a socialite. Although the film is without twists and director Shuichi Okita is even handed, it has sorrow, joy, unions and separations. In addition many years later old friends and old lovers' memories of him makes the movie more and more nostalgic and human. Lead actress Yuriko Yoshitaka is also very funny but strangely also very innocent. The nice guy lead's unpredictable fate leaves many sighing. Why does everyone in the film laugh like mad as soon as Yononsuke's name is mentioned? Because it came from the over 300 years old Ihara Saikaku erotic classic THE SENSUALIST, which depicts the lustful Yononsuke's bisexual histories with 3,000 women and 500 young men. Everyone in Japan knows about this, naturally the male lead's name becomes a laughing stock. (three out of five stars) MIDSUMMER'S EQUATION is More Monotonous Than The Previous Film The Masaharu Fukuyama starred, Keigo Higashino originally written MIDSUMMER'S EQUATION also has Yuriko Yoshitaka as a female cop in place of Kou Shibasaki in the previous film. This mystery touches on bay preservation and oil drilling development conflicts, the center is a murder of old and new romance. However the story and the characters are more monotonous than the previous film version. Galileo's technological gadgets are childish yet overly complicated. This time he performed a jet experiment for a boy who could not swim to see the coral reef and fishes under the sea. Actually it was a waste. He might as well ask his diver cousin to shoot an underwater video for him. I am somewhat disappointed with MIDSUMMER'S EQUATION, but I also feel that THE STORY OF YONONSUKE depicts the university student life simpler than AMERICAN DREAMS IN CHINA and SO YOUNG. The best takeaway from these two Japanese films are their humanity and country life. YONONSUKE's leads are even rare in their innocence and cuteness. (two and a half out of five stars) - SHEK KEI 2. APPLE DAILY, JULY 6 2013, ELECTRIC FILM ROAD JOHNNIE TO: ROOT OF THE PROBLEM His home field is Hong Kong, but recently moving its focus north the team Johnnie To Kei Fung and Wai Ka Fai seems to make poor visitors. Both DON'T GO BREAKING MY HEART (DAN SUN NAM NUI) and DRUG WAR (DUK JIN) are like visiting teams, they only all call Andy Lau Tak Wa and Sammi Cheng Sau Man's BLIND DETECTIVE (MAN TAM) home. To Kei Fung and Wai Ka Fai earlier spoke in Cannes, France, with a back and forth analysis of the reason behind Hong Kong film being forced to compete as visitors and being overtaken by Mainland films. The problem lies with the less than solid "root" of next generation cultivate, as filmmakers lack the effort to succeed. - MAN KWOK CHUN The To Kei Fung directed, produced, Wai Ka Fai written new film BLIND DETECTIVE earlier held a late night screening at the Cannes Film Festival. Only staying in Cannes for a few days, To Sir had an intensive interview schedule but was still in decent mood. He as usual had cigars and red wine as his company during the interview. To Sir said that every so often he would return to Cannes and every time he would be very relaxed. "Every time I come here stuff doesn't move much, time hasn't move much, it seemed to have stopped here. The Cannes Film Festival gathers many filmmakers and feels like a martial art world conference. I also see how much Westerners respect film." Wai Ka Fai said that he has been to Cannes less times than To Sir, but felt that this small town has changed very little. Every time he went to familiar restaurants he would run into many old friends. Clear Job Division With Wai Ka Fai Speaking of their collaboration, To Sir admitted that after years of working together their job division became clearer and clearer. He said, "Wai Ka Fai is the brains, focusing on creating. I am responsible for production, then I turn it back to him for adjustment. This time with BLIND DETECTIVE we were chatting when someone mentioned Lau Tak Wa wanted to play a blind character. We thought it would be pretty fun, so we slowly came up with the script with one line from you and one line from me." As for outside accusation that their earlier film DRUG WAR was like a Mainland television series, although BLIND DETECTIVE is still a co-production this time it ultimately returns to the Hong Kong film pace. To Sir said, "Those who say DRUG WAr is like a Mainland series don't know anything. Mainland has never approved such a story, it was an enormous attempt; this time BLIND DETECTIVE indeed is a very Hong Kong film. Although this time is a co-production, creatively we can be daring because the story takes place in Hong Kong. If the entire story takes place in the Mainland it would be more difficult. Since it happens in Hong Kong, they cannot care less." The relationship between pure Hong Kong film and co-production in recent years can be a love and hate one. Because co-production has an enormous Mainland market, the subject still needs to coordinate with Mainland audience taste. Veteran filmmaker John Chong Ching once said that now Hong Kong film is at its fighting for its life stage. Wai Ka Fai felt that the problem has not yet reached such a severe stage. He said, "The most difficult time for Hong Kong film definitely isn't now, but ten years ago. Now the Mainland market is more open, the entire film industry ecology is different. Because of such large growth in Mainland box office, they on certain level are giving Hong Kong films to people. yet undoubtedly the clientele is different, the product has to have some changes." Never Attending Shanghai Film Festival Again To Sir added, "It's like the order of nature. When a plant absorbs sunlight, even if the position of the sun is different the plant wouldn't die. It would just grow toward a second direction and it can survive. The situation will appear sooner or later in film, it is inevitable. We ultimately are Chinese, Hong Kong film is Chinese film. Whether it dies or not it depends on how you look at it. I feel as long as a Hong Kongers are making movies, Hong Kong movies would not die. However whether the new generation of Hong Kong directors can bring film to new heights, it depends a lot on their luck. The biggest problem is 'root'. Wai Ka Fai and I both started at TVB, Tsui Hark and (Ann) Hui On Wa as well, yet this climate can't cultivate a group like ours. Thus I say the death of Hong Kong is unrelated to the Mainland, it's your closed market. If all you get are tiny shrimps, then you are dead for sure! The Mainland competition is very fierce. They would play their trump card, exactly like the 80'S Hong Kong. Hong Kong film wouldn't die in the hands of others. Movies can be made anywhere. How many different types of movies has Ang Lee in how many different countries? There is no problem at all." Did To Sir feel that the new generation of Hong Kong directors have any remaining advantage? He said, "Freedom of speech, if we ignore the Mainland market we can say whatever. Yet I don't know how much longer that can be maintained. I hope at least for eight or ten more years. If the new generation of Hong Kong directors don't properly use this advantage, in the future when they (Mainland directors) will be free you won't even have a shadow! How easy would it be to find ten directors out of 1.3 billion people, they are very active. They may have ten Jia Zhangke who are waiting, never say you don't have any opportunity. Now new comers can very quickly raise several million to make a movie. At our time we would have been drooling. The government is also providing financial assistance. Thus it would depend on how determined the next generation of filmmakers will be and how many ideas they will have!" In addition, To Sir two days ago went to promote the film in Wuhan. He did not go to the cinema to attend any event. He daringly said, "I don't understand the meaning behind directors running to cinemas. If this is the only way to attract viewers, what kind of movie is it? I don't want to run around cinemas again and repeat some so-called dialogue like a human answering machine." He even stressed that he would never go to the Shanghai Film Festival again, only because it was not a real film festival and it did not respect film. Yet Ying Liang does not take this as the core of the narrative, but centers it on the life of Yang Jia’s mother instead, on how she strikes to speak for her son while being detained in a mental hospital. Subtle yet immensely powerful, the film is triumphed by the wrenching performance of Nai An, the regular producer of filmmaker Lou Ye. Ying Liang’s direction is exceptionally calm and moving, playing as an observer to this ridiculous tragedy that no one will not feel harrowed when walking of the cinema. Like other teenagers, they’re stressing over upcoming college entrance exams – and even more so when they’re forced to join the school choir in order to fill a remaining requirement. There, their unorthodox instructor blends the principles of classic Western music and traditional Korean song. Though at first they are reluctant to learn, they soon find a love for this exciting blend of music… and are forced to band together when the school cancels their annual summer concert. Will their music survive? Tuesday, August 13, 2013 @ 7PM I AM. (New York Premiere, 2012) The music documentary I Am. follows the chart-topping 32 K-pop artists a part of SM TOWN as they prepare for a live performance at one of the world’s most prestigious venues: New York City’s Madison Square Garden. Shining light on what defines the performers and the intense effort that goes into their meticulously-staged concerts, this touching coming-of-age story is just as much about the growing pains and glory of the young artists as it is about their music. Featuring tons of incredible music and amazing K-pop cameos, this is the inside look into Korea’s popular music scene. Tuesday, July 30, 2013 @ 7PM TURN IT UP TO ELEVEN 2: WILD DAYS (New York Premiere, 2012) Galaxy Express, one of Korea’s biggest pop sensations, is known all over Asia. Their fame knows no bounds, but when the group decides to go to America, they quickly discover how difficult it can be to approach new people, cultures, and ideas. A stunning documentary that follows the legendary rock band on their most recent solo tour across America, Turn it Up to Eleven 2 is an intimate look into nineteen huge Galaxy Express concerts – and the unbelievable passion that goes into each and every one of them. Tuesday, July 16, 2013 @ 7PM PLAY (International Premiere, 2011) Mate was an indie band from Korea who happened upon fame in 2009, when Irish musician Glenn Hansard (of Swell Season and the hit musical “Once”) spotted them busking in the lobby of one of his concerts. This was the beginning of a dramatic debut, which would see bandmembers Jung Joon-Il, Yim Hun-Il, and Lee Hyun-jae rocketed to fame. Play chronicles these events, with the band appearing as themselves – and staying very truthful to their inspiring story. --- [ WHAT IS YOUR CHAFFING EDITOR LISTENING TO ] ...Nothing is better than the original though.
