Later she will star in the John Woo (Ng Yu Sum) new film LOVE AND LET LOVE, which has already been confirmed for a production start on the 6th. Aside from the announced Song Hye Kyo, Zhang Ziyi, Takeshi Kaneshiro (Gum Sing Mo) and Huang Xiaoming, the film will also have Alex Fong Chung Shun, Bowie Lam Bo Yi, Tong Dawei and Tony Yang (Yeung Yau Ning) and shoot in a Huairou film and television base. * (2013/07/03) Congratulations! The 45 year old Jordan Chan Siu Chun and the 30 year old Cherrie Ying Choi Yi finally on July 1st gave birth to an almost 6 pound son Jasper. Little Siu Chun was born earlier than expected. When Ying Choi Yi realized her water broke, she immediately asked Siu Chun to return to Hong Kong. Siu Chun was lucky enough to return from Tianjin in time to be in the delivery room with his wife and witness the birth of his son under typhoon signal 3. Ying Choi Yi admitted it was like a dream and even joked that since her son was born during a storm, perhaps he would be able to command storms! New father Chan Siu Chun spoke to the media outside the hospital. He could not hide his joy. "My son was born on July 1st. I of course went into the delivery room with my wife. My son is almost 6 pounds. The delivery was not natural but the entire process went very smoothly. She was very tough and wasn't scared at all." Siu Chun was in Tianjin when he learned that his wife was about to give birth. He immediately returned to Hong Kong. As soon as he landed he rushed into the delivery room. Finally he was able to accompany Ting Ting into the delivery room; however, Siu Chun has yet to be able to hold the baby yet because the baby had to be kept under observation in an incubator. However last night Siu Chun finally was able to hold the baby! He made a baby carrying pose for the press. "Earlier during an interview I had a lesson, I don't think I will have any problem. I scored in the 80s." Will he distribute baby photos? He said, "Probably not, I will save them for myself." Siu Chun revealed that Jasper's mouth resembled his Mommy's and nose and eyebrows like Papa's. He said, "He is very hairy, I mean eyebrows, hair too. His limbs are long. Of course he is very handsome." He even praised his wife for being tough. Even with the anesthesia she still could feel the operation in her lower half. She even spoke as her eyes teared up. Siu Chun felt that this was an experience that only women would be able to experience and tough out. He of course was very touched and even thanked his wife with a kiss for giving birth to his baby. His son for now has no Chinese name yet, he would leave it for his wife to decide. For now he would be breast fed. He was the happiest that his son shared an astrological sign with him. "Coincidentally he was born on July 1st. Every year we will have fireworks to celebrate with. (It doesn't happen every year) It's still good!" According to Ying Choi Yi's facebook post, their son is named Jasper. Because Siu Chun's English name was Jordan, their son's name had to start with a J as well. Will he reduce work to take care of his family? Siu Chun helplessly said that originally he wanted to stay in Hong Kong more to spend more time with the baby, but from July to August he will have to fly to Tianjin for work. Siu Chun revealed that his wife always asked him to take acting roles, but he refused to yield. He planned to perform concerts for extra money, which was better than leaving several months for acting. Thus after all the work on hand he would not work another Mainland series for at least one to two years. He whined, "Give me some time with my son first. My wife had to suffer to give birth to our son. This would be a type of pleasure for the parents." Mr. and Mrs. Charles Heung Wa Keung yesterday visited at the hospital. Their son Jacky Heung Jor brought a gift in a Burberry bag. Mrs. Heung said, "I haven't called Ting Ting yet, but I believe they have to be very excited. (Will you give them any parenthood tips?) I believe they have done a lot of homework." YOUNG AND DANGEROUS (GOO WAT JAI)'s Chicken Chan Siu Chun became a father, his co-star friends of course were happy for him. The humorous "Chan Ho Nam" Dior Cheng Yi Kin congratulated Siu Chun online right away, "Congratulation Pal, welcome Little Siu Chun." "Dai Tin Yee" Michael Tse Tin Wa yesterday brought champagne to hospital to visit with his wife. After a hour, they left in the company of Siu Chun. Tin Wa said that because the hospital has not permitted it yet they have not yet seen "Chun B". He said, "I am very happy for them, I saw Siu Chun smile from the heart. (Did you give him any parenthood tips?) I didn't ask, but maybe tomorrow we will be back to see the baby." As for "Bau Pei" Jerry Lamb Hiu Fung, when asked if he would share any parenthood tips with Siu Chun he revealed, "He wouldn't listen. He listens to the boss (Ying Choi Yi)! We suggested names for his son, he told us not to mess around and to stay away. He wasn't afraid of his old lady, it's respect." * (2013/07/03) Jay Chou (Chow Kit Lun) 6 years later returns to the director's chair and made the film THE ROOF TOP. Earlier a premiere was held in Beijing. He along with Xu Fan, Li Xinai and other actors attended. The film will open on July 11. Chairman Chou's expression of love in the film is very romantic, but he said that in real life he was not romantic. Very rarely he would say to someone I love you, even for his mother he would only express his love through a song. Chairman Chou hoped that Chinese musicals would be able to cross borders. He felt that it rivaled Hollywood's. The film has already been sleected to be the 12th New York Asian Film festival closing film. Aside from Southeast Asia release, it will land in North America on July 19. Chow Kit Lun said, "The scale has to be large. It's not just made for the Asian market. When foreigners watch it they will feel it's amazing too!" As for box office expectations, Chairman Chou did not answer. Fans however boldly said 2 billion. * (2013/07/03) Andy Lau Tak Wa and Sammi Cheng sau Man earlier went to Shenzhen for the BLIND DETECTIVE (MAN TAM) press conference and were asked to perform the bridge tango again. Wa Jai continued to carry a cane and appeared as the film character Johnston. He said, "Walking with a cane is as easy as walking with my legs!" This time was their final BLIND DETECTIVE promotion together. They and director Johnnie To Kei Fung all said that they were reluctant to part and did not know when the next reunion will be. Thus they hoped to celebrate the success of BLIND DETECTIVE. Sammi joked, "Then we will have to have a proper feast!" * (2013/07/03) Mabel Cheung Yuen Ting and Alex Law Kai Yui were guests on a nowTV program. Jet Tone has already contacted the police and issued a statement to clarify that it has no relationship with the site. The site not only claimed to have work with Jet Tone on films like HAPPY TOGETHER (CHUN GUONG JA SIT) and THE GRANDMASTERS (YUT DOI JUNG SI) but also the upcoming John Woo (Ng Yu Sum) film LOVE AND LET LOVE. The film's producer Terence Chang Ka Chun said, "We know about this and earlier someone has already used our new film title to recruit actors in Taiwan and Shanghai. We immediately issued a statement to clarify that we are not recruiting actors. I know some actors even paid for their own way to audition in Indonesia. Right now I hope the most for no one else being swindled again!" * (2013/07/02) Veteran actor Lai Han Chi due to pneumonia earlier passed away at the age of 62. The film's actors must show off their muscles except Cheng Chung Kei. He said that he had too many tattoos and as a cop taking off his clothing was inconvenient. Cheng Chung Kei said that MANG's director has not arranged for any love scene co-star not because his wife Sammie Yu Sze Man prohibited it. Perhaps the director felt that he would be unconvincing and unable to relate with in romantic scenes. Instead he had more stunts. He himself would not resist any romantic scene. "During rehearsal I had to grab Cheng Chung Kei but I grabbed Shek Wing Lei instead. (Are you afraid of grabbing the wrong spot?) I am the most afraid of bumping into someone! Originally I had nearsighted glasses for balance but I couldn't adjust. I was very dizzy and felt nauseous after ten seconds." * (2013/07/02) Veteran actress So Hung Suen last month due to diabetes related heart failure passed away at age 62. They often saw each other and discussed Buddhism. Earlier when she found out that Sister Suen was hospitalized she sent her regards. She lamented that birth, aging, illness and death were certain in life, but Sister Suen was still young and her passing was quite regrettable. However the production made me realize that the most important was to be able to work with outstanding directors and actors. It was a great experience. In comparison, the difficulty before wasn't a problem at all. Thus as long as I run into a good script, I hope to work with Hong Kong directors and actors again." For the safety of the media, she said that she would speak at a safer location. Yung Jing Jing's sunglasses still could not hide her sorrow and exhaustion. She said, "Thank you everyone for everyone's support of Master. Now film industry unions and the martial art world got together to do something for Master, I hope the reporter union would work together as well for everyone to make this event great together." Everyone was worried about her emotions. She said, "Thank you, I am much calmer, much better than the first day. (What about your daughters?) We are all much calmer because we have already accepted this. After acceptance we have to help Master with his affairs according to his wishes. Master belonged to Hong Kong, belonged to everyone. Together we will make this great." Yung Jing Jing pointed out that Master Lau asked Ah Lek to be the chair, so Ah Lek would make the announcements. She asked people in lieu of sending flowers to make a donation to the Ling Wan Temple charity fund to assist with temple maintenance so it may benefit others further. Ah Lek served as the funeral committee chair and revealed the funeral arrangement details. Earlier Yung Jing Jing purchased 15 connecting niches in Po Fook Hill. Ah Lek said that Mrs. Lau wanted Master Lau's tombstone to have a film feel. The Hong Kong Film Arts Association will be responsible. The center plaque will say "Grand Master of A Generation" and the side couplet will be Hung Kuen motto. The photo may be Master Lau in action in the film DRUNKEN MONKEY (JUI MA LAU). The funeral altar will be decorated in the same manner, with white lotus and white rose decorations. She did not revealed what she gave her husband. "I gave him my heart!" Ka Ling admitted that after years together gift giving was rather difficult, as she had to pay attention to Wai Jai's interest in life. Speaking of Wai Jai's new hairstyle, she asked everyone, "Doesn't he look handsome? He felt THE GRANDMASTERS (YUT DOI JUNG SI) hair was maintained for so many years, I wanted to change to a new look. (Do you like it?) Of course I like it, he is OK with any hairstyle. This time he even received raves that he is younger. He has never grown up." Did Wai Jai have any birthday wish? Ka Ling said it was still good health. Did he want to have a child? "No, (Natasha Na Ying is rushing you to have a baby?) Many people are rushing, many people use their own value to gauge others. Actually everyone's lifestyle is very different. Many friends have offered formulas of giving a child, I don't know whether to laugh or to cry. I thank them very much. (Have you tried them?) No, actually now science is so advanced." * (2013/06/28) The Andy Lau Tak Wa and Lin Chiling starred film SWITCH (TIN GEI FU CHUN SHAN GUI TOH) was rendered worthless online and called a top rotten film. The Jet Li (Lee Nin Kit), Wen Zhang and Michelle Chen starred comedy action film BADGES OF FURY (BUT YI SUN TAM) soon after opening has also been called a rotten film. Wen Zhang, Cecilia Liu Shishi, Michelle Chen and Ada Liu Yan two days ago promoted in Guangzhou. Speaking of working with otaku goddess Michelle Chen and even linked to her in rumors, Wen Zhang said, "I knew about Michelle Chen from YOU ARE THE APPLE OF MY EYE and was full of fantasy for Shen Chia Yi. Finally she showed up on the set in flip flops, shorts, and singing with her headphones on. The goddess mirage was completely destroyed just like Shu Qi." BADGES after a few days in release already made over 100 million at the box office but still was inevitably called rotten. Wen Zhang said, "It's impossible for everyone to like it. This is Hong Kong style comedy. As long as the corners of viewers' mouths are slightly upward after watching it's fine." Speaking of Wa Jai apologizing for SWITCH being called rotten, Wen Zhang disagreed. "Each actor works very hard on their movies. After completing a movie, they don't want viewers to yell at them. For example the Chinese soccer team lost 1 to 5 to Thailand, does every player have to come out and apologize? How is this reasonable, whoever is famous has to apologize. It's unreasonable." * (2013/06/28) "We will always love you, pass on in peace." Lau Kar Leung and Mary Jean Reimer (Yung Jing Jing)'s love of 26 years as a couple cannot avoid life stages of aging, illness and death. When Lau Kar Leung passed away in the arms of his wife Yung Jing Jing, she nearly collapsed from the sorrow. She had to move away from her home to calm down with meditation in a nunnery. Yesterday was the third day since her husband's passing. She along with family and friends performed ceremonies at the Buddhist Temple. She recalled Lau Kar Leung's 30 minutes in life as a struggle with death until she said to her husband, "We will always love you, pass on in peace!" She watched Lau Kar Leung's heart monitor returned to zero as he completed the life of a martial art grand master of a generation. Since Lau Kar Leung's passing, Yung Jing Jing asked Nat Chan Pak Cheung to be the funeral committee chair while she hid away in a nunnery to pray for her late husband. Yesterday was the first ceremony for Lau Kar Leung, as an abbot led in the Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva Sutra chant. Reporters attended as friends and respected Yung Jing Jing's wishes of no photos to pretend any disturbance. At the ceremony older daughter Man Yi missed her father, held her mother and cried. The mother and daughters' crying embrace made people's heart ached. The chanting ceremony was over one hour long, Yung Jing Jing and her daughters were kneeling throughout. They were able to control their emotions but could not hold back sobs. The days after Master Lau passed, she brought the daughters to the nunnery and once had the impulse to stay there for the long run. For days they have been chanting in the morning with the abbot at the Temple, one of the abbots was the one who rushed to the hospital for Master Lau's last rite. Yung Jing Jing recalled Lau Kar Leung's sudden condition deterioration. She said that her husband transferred from the Prince of Wales Hospital to the Union Hospital, she and their daughters also moved to the hospital to take care of him. At the time his pneumonia has worsen and the respirator was already useless. His will to live was strong and he would rather be intubated. On June 25 when he reached the final moment of his life, he was extubated and taken off other life support machine except the heart beat monitor. Yung Jing Jing sat on the bed and held Master Lau in her arms. Family and friends who were present each bid him farewell. At this time he could no longer speak, but his heart beats showed responses. Yung Jing Jing said, "When I said that a watch was being repaired and hasn't been picked up yet, his heart beat especially fast. He struggled for half a hour without a respirator. Sometimes when his heart beat slower it would suddenly pick up again. I felt that he was struggling. Finally I touched his chest and said that we would always love him and told me to pass on in peace. He then breathed his final breath. When I held him his body was very soft and fragrant. He was very peaceful." She personally cleaned Master Lau for the final time and even applied chap stick for him. Speaking of buying a place for Master Lau's ashes early on, Yung Jing Jing said, "Only after seeing his condition deteriorating did I start to look for a spot for the ashes. Luckily with a friend's help I bought 15 connected spots in Po Fook Hill. I once suggested burial in Macau, but he declined. He would rather be cremated. I took photos of the spots to show him and he was very pleased. I planned to use 9 spots for him, with a couplet on the sides. The six spots on each side will be reserved for when his beloved required them." Yung Jing Jing refused to reveal how much she spent. Reporters called Po Fook Hill to inquire about prices. The highest price for the center spots was 520,000, the estimate for 15 spots was HK$7.8 million. Yung Jing Jing said, "Kar Leung and I talked about a lot of things, and we have seen through life and death. I asked if he wanted a low key funeral? He said it had to be appropriate. So I wanted to do this final thing well for him. Because he trusted Chan Pak Cheung, he helped. He and (Eric) Tsang Chi Wai have helped me the most. I wanted the funeral to have film and kung fu elements and to be positive." Yung Jing Jing secretly arranged for his children with his former wife to meet with Lau Kar Leung. His only son saw his father off on his final journey. She said, "He had little contact with his children with his former wife, I asked Ka Wing to asked his brother if he wanted to see them and asked them to visit their father at the hospital. I knew that it was very important for children to see their father one last time. Since my daughters can see Papa, his former wife's children should be able to see their father; when Kar Leung left, his son was by his side. Actually we held no grudge, they respected me. Seeing each other again after so many years, we hug and comforted each other." Yung Jing Jing missed Lau Kar Leung's romance. They liked to take wedding photos and had many around the home. They even had two weddings, they were rumored to have married in 1984. She said, "Actually we registered in Singapore in 1987, in 1990 we again went to the U.S. to register our marriage. Actually we wanted to register again in Hong Kong but we were denied. Each time we registered the marriage we meant to solidify our relationship. Lau Kar Leung was very romantic. On the day of his passing, the maid was missing. Actually she went downstairs to get flowers, as Kar Leung has asked long ago. He wanted to have two white roses on his pillow next to him when he passed!" Did Master Lau have any last word for Yung Jing Jing? She said, "Of course we know what we wanted to say! I still know that he still loved me very much inside!" Yesterday Yung Jing Jing posted on facebook, "Originally two butterflies in flight, now only one remain. Love is hard to leave and memories are hard to forget, only survivors know the pain." Lau Kar Leung and Yung Jing Jing's marriage caused quite a stir. Aside from their 30 year age difference, Lau Kar Leung also had a family at the time. He gave up everything in order to be with Yung Jing Jing. Back then Yung Jing Jing once said, in a previous life she was a canary that belonged to Lau Kar Leung, in this life she had to marry Lau Kar Leung to repay him. Now Lau Kar Leung passed away, would Yung Jing Jing want to continue the relationship in the next life? She said, "I too thought about this question. The daughters said that in the next life they wanted to keep being Papa's family. I of course wanted to as well. Hopefully when he became someone in Heaven, we will meet again. However, remembering how painfully we loved in this lifetime, with 30 years difference we still ended up together. The abbots said that because we loved too deep in the previous life, in this life we would experience a lot. Perhaps next life it will still be this way, perhaps love will be even more tragic. Because I would rather Kar Leung reach Sukhavati I don't want him to be reincarnated. Our destiny should end with this life." When Yung Jing Jing emotionally collapsed she thought about staying in the nunnery for the long run. She said, "I know I still have a lot that I haven't done, if I stay here for the long run now the master of the temple may kick me out. No one knows what will happen in the future, in the end I may retire here." Yung Jing Jing said that aside from Po Fook Hill, she also had tablet space for her husband at another temple. She even wanted to set up an altar at home. Different places would have ashes. She said, "Speaking of ashes, I feel the government is lacking in this aspect. Actually a person should be as much ash as an apple cardboard box, but when the family picks up the ashes it is just a small bag. The rest is treated like trash. How can an ancestor's ashes be handled this way? After I left the nunnery I still have to take care of this!" Yung Jing Jing yesterday morning wrote on facebook, "I have to get up at 4:30AM for morning prayer, at 9AM I have to recite the Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva Sutra. In the nunnery the pain of memory is less but the desire to join the nunnery is increased. Everything comes and goes with fate." She even received that her younger daughter decided to become a vegetarian for her father for the rest of her life. * (2013/06/28) Mary Jean Reimer (Yung Jing Jing) yesterday morning revealed on facebook that she has made contact with the Performing Artist Guild representative Eric Tsang Chi Wai and they will work together on Master Lau Kar Leung's funeral. Yesterday Chi Wai and Lau Kar Leung's funeral committee chair Nat Chan Pak Cheung met with the ten major Hong Kong film industry unions to discuss assistance for Yung Jing Jing. Ah Lek said, "We have the support of the affiliated organizations, which meant that Brother Kar Leung has the deep respect of his colleagues. Now Yung Jing Jing is at the temple to pray for Brother Kar Leung and will not leave the temple until tomorrow (today). Then we will meet with everyone again. All of the funeral ceremonies, altar, program, details will be done according to her wishes." Ah Lek thanked Mona Fong Yat Wa for her complete assistance as she will provide Brother Kar Leung's Shaw film performance photos and short films. Because he and Chi Wai both had work that will take them away from Hong Kong, they will leave the matter in Ting Yu and Wong Ka Hei's hands. How was Yung Jing Jing? Ah Lek said, "She is very cool, very strong, just that she has more trivial things for her to decide. (Would you contact Gordon Liu (Lau Ka Fai?)) I believe now isn't the right time to contact him. His own health isn't great. I believe he already knows about Brother Kar Leung's death, but I don't know how to get in touch with him." Was Chi Wai invited to participate in the 49 people chant group? He said that he found out a lot of information only from facebook, he had to wait until Yung Jing Jing left the temple to be able to answer. The funeral is temporarily scheduled for July 22 and 23 at the Universal Funeral Parlor. His ashes will be placed in Po Fook Hill. The funeral service will be Buddhist. * (2013/06/28) Tony Leung Chiu Wai yesterday turned 51. His wife Carina Lau Ka Ling just after midnight wished him happy birthday online and posted a photo of Wai Jai sucking cream off his finger. Wai Jai's official site posted his birthday photo. He got a short hair cut and posed in front of two birthday cakes. * (2013/06/28) Helen To Yu Fung's program interviews filmmakers and actors in a humorous manner. The first episode guest was Chapman To Man Jat. He shared his film world from playing small roles, winning Best Actor to becoming a director. To Man Jat felt that his ISABELLA era was presumptuous. At the time he felt that film was the place where his talent was displayed and the tool that proved how amazing he was; now, film to him has already become work. He even described, "Actor and sex workers are very similar." * (2013/06/28) The film BLIND DETECTIVE (MAN TAM) is director Johnnie To Kei Fung, Andy Lau Tak Wa and Sammi Cheng Sau Man's 10 year reunion. Wa Jai joked that To Kei Fung's personality was the character's blue print. "I completely cloned how he mercilessly yells at people." Wa Jai said that during the shoot To Kei Fung "sang after scolding at him". He said, "As soon as the production began I had to blindly run around in a forest. I had no action director or protective padding, I never stopped. With so many people on the set, I couldn't mess up. After 4 takes I said that my clothes were soak through and I had to change. After a 20 minute break I had to shoot a tree climbing scene. At the time I was suffering, I was out of breath. I didn't expect To Kei Fung to say 'you are old'. At the time I wanted to jump on him and hit him. In the end the scene was still cut. Later at the press conference he sang that my strength was on the decline." He joked that next time he would not work with To Kei Fung on an action film again. Wa Jai complained that when they made RUNNING ON KARMA (DAI JET LO), To Kei Fung saw Li Bingbing perform a mid air stunt and took the chance to yell at him. "Even a girl can do it, yet you can't." Wa Jai joked, "Why would I dare to talk back? I am afraid of being embarrassed. From his movies everyone know how crazy he is." To Kei Fung has not yelled at Sammi yet. "Maybe he knew that I was thick skinned. After yelling at me I would lose all my hair from the fright and become unable to act!" In the film still, Sammi displayed her three inch career line. She joked, "By chance the lighting was right, I of course had to show off. Normally I just keep it hidden, actually I have a 7 inch career line!" * (2013/06/28) Andy Lau Tak Wa and Sammi Cheng Sau Man promoted their film BLIND DETECTIVE (MAN TAM) in Singapore and attracted over 3,000 people to a shopping center. The host asked Wa Jai about slapping Sammi hard in the film. Wa Jai joked, "Don't think that slapping her hard was a lot of fun, actually my heart ached very much." Sammi joked, "So in the end I returned a super slap to him, he told me to hit even harder. Otherwise if it wasn't hard enough we had to shoot it again, and he would have to slap me five more times!" * (2013/06/28) Pegasus Motion Pictures CEO John Chong Ching yesterday called for a press conference to clarify the rumor that boss Raymond Wong Pak Ming making his son Edmond Wong Chi Wun the director of IP MAN 3 in place of Wilson Yip Wai Shun and upsetting Donnie Yen Chi Tan. Chong Ching said, "Yip Wai Shun didn't have time to make it and suggested for IP MAN screen writer Wong Chi Wun to direct. Yen Chi Tan indeed strongly objects. Actually Wong Chi Wun has to prepare for his September wedding and can't make it either." Was Wong Chi Wun upset about this? Chong Ching said, "Although he wasn't too upset, the clarification is necessary. He for now has no plan to direct. Even when he directs, he may not make this type of film." Chong Ching said that IP MAN 3 will not start production this year but will definitely be made, because a contract was signed with Ip Chun and Ip Ching. The script has also already received Mainland film authority approval and will be shot in 3D. Chong Ching said, "Wong Pak Ming and the company's intention is to shoot with the original team. I am continuously working on the schedule with Yen Chi Tan. He hasn't asked for 50 million." The film company called Yip wai Shun, who admitted that he suggested for Wong Chi Wun to direct. As for Yen Chi Tan's demand of performing only with him as the director, Yip wai Shun said, "I want to thank him for trusting me, only feeling secure with me." Did Yen Chi Tan stipulate in his contract that he had to direct? Yip Wai Shun said, "No! We are so close, my intention too is the original team would make the production more fun." Chong Ching added, "Our mutual understanding is the production with the original team, when Yip Wai Shun has time then it will start production." Wong Pak Ming yesterday said that Yip Wai Shun had to work on another film so he suggested for Wong Chi Wun to direct out of goodwill. He was only the producer. "I didn't kick out Yip Wai Shun to support my son." He said that after working with Yen Chi Tan for years, a break up is impossible. As for the rumor of Yen Chi Tan asking for 50 million, Wong Pak Ming denied. "No no no! Yen Chi Tan and I didn't talk about money, just the scheduling problem. The salary is more than 50 million? I never said that. Chong Ching already negotiated the salary last year, and I agree with this reasonable rate." * (2013/06/28) Nick Cheung Ka Fai and the 10 year old child star Crystal Lee earlier at the Shanghai International Film Festival with the film UNBEATABLE (GIK JIN) won Best Actor and Best Actress. The film promotion is officially released. In the film, Cheung Ka Fai and Eddie Peng Yu-Yen team up against Andy Tien (On Chi Kit) and other opponents. The hunky trio's fitness physique leaves nothing to the imagination, and the action scenes is intense with hardcore fights. After his "big guy" physique was unveiled, Ka Fai who has been seen as "god" said, "Others in the ring fight for 5 minutes at most in one breath, when we fight we fight for several days. We have to tough it up even when we are exhausted. When we are free we have to make training and lifting. It absolutely is a physical challenge." Peng Yu-Yen admitted that many close up shots could not use doubles. They had to personally perform being taken down and locked up. He said, "Everyday the instructors punch and kick us, with 6 to 8 hours of training we become what we look like in the film. When my Mama saw the poster, she couldn't recognize me either." * (2013/06/28) Simon Yam Tat Wa, Fruit Chan Gor and Lee Chi Ngai directed the film TALES FROM THE DARK (MAI LEI YEH) will be released on July 11th. Earlier Chan Gor's "Z.Y. Leung" footage spread like wildfire online. Brother Wa has always liked photography. He decided to personally shoot the 3 TALES FROM THE DARK posters. He even personally performed in one of them and had a pale dead make up look that was rather terrifying. He said, "The reason that pushed me into directing this film and writing this story is very simple, it is major complaint. Nowadays in Hong Kong, the distance between the middle class and the basic level is rapidly expanding. I play a lower class worker, so I live an inhuman life. I put on this dead person make up and coordinate with my twins from NIGHT AND FOG (TIN SHUI WAI DIK YEH YU MO) to rub my face from behind." * (2013/06/27) Just when everyone thought that it would be great to work on SDU: SEX DUTIES UNIT (FEI FU CHOOK JING), the stars complained after the shoot. Shawn Yue Man Lok said, "People have so much fun with escorts, I don't know if Ah Pang (Pang Ho Cheung) deliberately messed with us. At first when he told us the genre, everyone thought it would be a lot of fun. we didn't expect that we just get to look at girls, but physically we have exhausted ourselves. Maybe it was more difficult being in the actual SDU!" Chapman To Man Jat who lacked exercise said, "Making SDU out of the blue, actually it was a long expedition, wow! I was so out of breath from running, all the energy was contributed to running." * (2013/06/27) The martial art grand master of a generation Lau Kar Leung passed away. His widow Mary Jean Reimer (Yung Jing Jing) yesterday brought her two daughters to the nunnery for scripture chanting and to arrange for Master Lau's affairs. The funeral has been scheduled to take place at the end of July at the Universal Funeral Parlor. Lau Kar Leung battled cancer for 18 years to the very end with his toughness, but in recent years due to fluctuating conditions he rarely appeared in public. Yesterday, Yung Jing Jing released a photo with Master Lau last month on her 49th birthday. At the time he still appeared to be in decent shape. Yung Jing Jing yesterday said, "I wasn't mentally prepared for this to happen!" The passing of Lau Kar Leung had a tremendous impact on Yung Jing Jing. Yung Jing Jing yesterday went to the nunnery for meditation and today will make arrangements for the ceremony. Reporters yesterday got in touch with her. Has she already selected a photo for Master Lau? She said that Nat Chan Pak Cheung will be responsible for choosing a photo. In the photo of Master Lau celebrating his wife's 49th birthday last month, he appeared to be in decent condition and was not as frail as imagined. Yung Jing Jing said, "Thus I never expected my husband would suddenly pass away." Yung Jing Jing will make arrangements for the chanting ceremony today, and again next Saturday and once every seven days until August 11. Yung Jing Jing yesterday morning asked for help online. She wanted to contact Eric Tsang Chi Wai but he never replied, the reason was she was unable to find enough people for today's chanting and needed Chi Wai to get "reinforcement". Most of her friends were Christians. Yesterday afternoon, Yung Jing Jing on facebook told the media that she has already left her home and arrived at the nunnery so no one needed to wait near her home. Later she posted a photo with Lau Kar Leung from her birthday last month. Master Lau at the time appeared to be in decent condition, with a bandage on his hand perhaps due to the I-V. Yung Jing Jing wrote, "I never posted this photo online because I was afraid that everyone would see how poor he appeared. The balloon is still here, but he is not. With heartbreak and heartache, I can only rely on religion to temporarily ease my sorrow." Yung Jing Jing on facebook posted details of Master Lau's funeral arrangements. The dates will be between July 23 or 24, Tsz Shan Monastery's Venerable Tsang Chit will decide. The location will be the Universal Funeral Parlor. The ceremony will be a mix of Chinese and Western ceremonies, as well as Chinese martial arts and Hong Kong film. Yung Jing Jing hoped that the funeral would shake off the upsetting and negative feeling of death, funeral hall and funeral services. Although Ah Lek serves as the funeral committee chair, Yung Jing Jing still did everything herself. Because the body will be cremated, she was concerned with the coffin selection. Yung Jing Jing said that the traditional thick wood coffin left more wood ash and remains, she would like to find an environmentally friendly coffin. Master Lau agreed with that. If she could not find it in Hong Kong she would go elsewhere to look; some online suggested that "coffin within coffin" but she worried that the paper coffin would slip out. At the funeral a white "funeral lion dance" would take place. Yung Jing Jing at first wrote that Master Lau's disciple Sin Kwok Lam will be responsible for that, later it was changed to Master Lau's brother Lau Ka Wing. Lau Kar Leung has been fighting cancer for years and has always been under Yung Jing Jing's care. Reportedly in the past decade she spent over HK$200,000 on cancer fighting medicine for her husband and bought a mansion in Guangzhou for him to rest in. She even gave him "super sports car" several times for him to flaunt with. Aside from money and material care, Yung Jing Jing attentively took care of her husband's health and coaxed him into the supposedly effective Budwig diet and personally made the cancer fighting lemon vinegar. * (2013/06/27) Lau Kar Leung worked on his final film SEVEN SWORDS (CHUT GIM) with director Tsui Hark. Back then Master Lau returned for Tsui Hark and even served as chief action director despite being ill. When he shot on location in Tianshan he caught pneumonia and almost lost his life. Lau Kar Leung's attending physician Mok Shu Kam said that back then Master Lau went to Tianshan without his knowledge. Despite pneumonia he still insisted on performing. When he returned to Hong Kong he was "half dead" and needed a long time to recover. Yesterday, Tsui Hark wrote an eulogy in memory of his colleague. Actually Master Lau's wish was to make a movie about Hung Kuen, unfortunately he was unable to fulfill it. Master Lau Kar Leung, I have always looked forward to the Hung Kuen film that you wanted to make. We are filmmakers who have followed your film footsteps to now, your film vision and ideas provided us with far reaching influence and impression. You are the martial art film as well as the martial world grand master of a generation. Your passing, to us, is the fall of a superstar. I remember when we were on location in Turpan, Xinjiang, I witnessed your tearfully lament of life because of the passing of Mr. James Wong Jim and Ms. Lam Bing. Today, you have left us. To us it is also extremely painful and woeful. Your brilliance will always shine in our hearts, your plans and everything have turned into memory that we extremely miss. Master Lau, thank you for giving us warm memory of our growth in the Wong Fei Hung film series. Thank you for displaying your beautiful abilities on the silver screen and opening our eyes. Thank you for founding a strong and powerful martial art style for the film industry. Thank you for using your film to bring us inspirations and excitement over the years. Master Lau, thank you, thank you. - Tsui Hark, June 26 2013 * (2013/06/27) Lo Hoi Pang yesterday attended a cable program taping. He said that he often had tea with Lau Kar Leung, but since the beginning of the year he has been ailing and thus no longer appeared. He called and sent his sympathy. Lo Hoi Pang said, "He told me to relax, and even said that he would see me later. Yet after that phone call, we never saw each other again. As people leave, sooner or later it will be my turn to go!" Speaking of playing "Z.Y. Leung" in his new film TALES FROM THE DARK (MAI LEI YEH) for villain hitting, Lo Hoi Pang felt that director Fruit Chan Gor wanted to air some grievances on behalf of Hong Kongers through the character. He was not afraid of crossing anyone either. * (2013/06/27) Andy Lau Tak Wa and Sammi Cheng Sau Man yesterday promoted their film BLIND DETECTIVE (MAN TAM) in Singapore. Perhaps due to the heighten emotions from the Hong Kong premiere, they were in great spirits. Lau Tak Wa joked, "Many informants after watching the premiere reported to me, seemingly Sammi truly has a great chance to win Best Actress." Sammi humbly said, "I never thought about winning Best Actress, just concentrating on making a good movie is enough. The box office performance is also beyond my grasp. When viewers like the movie, I am already very happy." They performed the dance scene in the film again at the request of local media. * (2013/06/27) Cissy Wang yesterday attended a SK-II event and revealed that her husband Donnie Yen Chi Tan is very busy. He is preparing for the November production CHIU CUP YING HUNG (SUPER HERO) and several Hollywood films. She said, "I told him not to make foreign films. I am already very satisfied, I don't want him to work so hard. However he loves movies too much, when he has a good script and character he wants to work. He is a workaholic, he wants to break through his level. I told him, let it go, let other people do it!" Was making the American dollar bad? She joked that the American dollar is no match for RMB. Was it because he had to work on foreign films he could not make IP MAN 3? Cissy denied that and said that the six month production period for the film company has passed. As for claims that Yen Chi Tan was asking for too much, she denied that Yen Chi Tan's salary was as much as 50 million. She joked that if his salary was so high, she would not have to work so hard. "It's not a salary issue. Some Hollywood film salaries are even higher, but he has to play a villain. He has quite a sense of justice so he turned it down." However, he felt that IP MAN film would be the best if it would be a collaboration with director Wilson Yip Wai Shun. Was he upset that Raymond Wong Pak Ming's son Edmond Wong Chi Wun would direct? She was unsure, in the end she felt that it had to be Yip Wai Shun's movie. * (2013/06/27) DaDa Chan Jing worked on a campaign for a slimming beauty company for the third year. This year she will not release any photo book. She admitted that photo book did not make as much money as acting. Earlier she won the Hong Kong Film Award Best Supporting Actress with VULGARIA (DAI JOOK HEI KET)'s "Popping Candy", but some felt that she did not rely on acting. They gave her pressure because her character stood out; she hoped to transition from playing sexy to relying on acting and receive recognition for it. However, she just guest starred in Pang Ho Cheung's new film and she still had to be sexy. The character was similar to "Popping Candy". "He said that it wasn't before, I was fooled. However it had some touching spots for balance." She would not mind being sexy if the role had potential. She revealed that later she will play a wife for the first time and she suggested for the film company to find a Korean hunk to play her husband. [ BLAH OF THE WEEK ] Columns, Reviews, Interviews 1. APPLE DAILY, JUNE 28 2013, SPECIAL TO THE BYGONE INNOCENT MARTIAL ART AGE We all grew up watching his martial art films. I always feel that in terms of Hong Kong martial art films, his achievement should be above Bruce Lee's. Only because of Bruce Lee's gigantic historical figure, I don't dare to say it. Unintentionally I compare their accomplishments just because I want to see the difference of martial art position between the same generation of people in film to display the difference between the exchange between the new and the old in Hong Kong society. Bruce Lee started as a child star and displayed the great image of a grand master of a generation. Lau Kar Leung as Hong Kong's first generation action director displayed the great image of martial art itself. Later when Chinese martial art became comedic acrobatics, Master Lau already thought it was too unauthentic. From his first claim to fame THE SPIRITUAL BOXER (SUN DA), he led viewers into the depths of each Chinese martial art school. Although he also had comedic elements, he mainly still introduced the spirit possession kung fu. Later THE 36TH CHAMBER OF SHAOLIN (SIU LUM SAM SUP LOK FONG) and RETURN TO THE 36TH CHAMBER (SIU LUM DAP PANG DAI SI) even lead a frail young man like me to study martial arts. However I was afraid of hard work and I was lazy, I couldn't even practice the beginner kung fu well so I quit. Practice Martial Art For Martial Art Although the comment above perhaps needs even further study, what Master Lau's film displayed indeed was a Chinese martial art direction that was attempting to modernize without being completely eroded by it in the end. Bruce Lee's first three films fully started with patriotism, with a very heavy Righteous Harmony Society flavor. Fighting the Japanese and fighting foreigners, the for the nation and the people content reflected the Hong Kong Chinese mentality of being colonized. The films that he personally directed pulled the story backdrop to now, in terms of visuals and kung fu training methods the road of deliberate modernized can be seen. Lau Kar Leung's work of course also had many external element influences, under the biggest studio system the time and space of his work was moved to more ancient times. Thus when people like us who do not have a clue watched it, it felt like watching authentic martial art. From Chinese spirit possession to Wing Chun to pressure point kung fu, mantis fist, Eight Trigram Pole to Monkey Fist, Master Lau introduced a variety of different Chinese martial arts and styles to the audience. His persistence for the so-called authentic martial art sometimes demonstrated Master Lau's innocent side. In his final film as a director DRUNKEN MONKEY (JUI MA LAU) his persistence for martial art could be seen. Sometimes martial art practice was not for health and fitness, but for martial art itself. This innocence with Master Lau's passing thoroughly went into history. - NGONG CHI 2. APPLE DAILY, JUNE 27 2013, BIG PLANNING TEN YEARS OF SHOW BUSINESS With 4 days from July 1, Hong Kong in 2013 has no life threatening pandemic of the century, anti-establishment comments have been "river crab". In comparison to ten years ago, everything seemed to be peaceful. After a ten year Hong Kong dream, how does show business look? Filmmakers, artists, singers all head north to work. They have become richer but their star power is not what it used to be; film and television's self censorship contributes to declining quality. In the end is it a blessing or a curse? - FUNG KWOK HONG Film The gold painted plaque of Eastern Hollywood has began to fade as early as the end of the 90s. Piracy was rampant, actors lacked successors, rotten films, sloppy and excessive productions all reduced viewers' desire to go to the movies drastically. The film market shrank. The situation was the worst in 2003. Back then due to SARS people had to take level 10 precautions just to go out, not to mention going to the high risk cinemas to watch a movie. Back then in order to revive the economy, China and Hong Kong made the Closer Economic Partnership Arrangement. It created a dramatic change in Hong Kong film. As soon as the arrangement was confirmed, co-production fever rose. Any film that met the Mainland film inspection criteria were permitted into the enormous Mainland market of 1.3 billion viewers. All it needed was big stars and solid subjects, making over 100 million in the Mainland absolutely was not a problem. Thus investors were tempted. Hong Kong films seemed to have seen a light at the end of darkness, but actually they headed toward another bottomless abyss. Hong Kong directors have always been known for their flexibility and quick wit. The subjects were also rather wide ranged -- prostitution, gambling, drugs, police corruption, gangsters, supernatural, zombies, sex, drama blossomed all in one pot. One was certain to be right for viewers. With Co-productions now, directors in order pass Mainland inspections all made the same subjects like revolutionary opera. Some had stories that were neither fish nor fowl, some were propaganda. Aside from the names of directors and actors, they no longer have any "Hong Kong specialty" to speak of. Last year, Pang Ho Cheung's VULGARIA (DAI JOOK HEI KET) ignored the Mainland film censors and still made 30 million at the Hong Kong box office. It woke up Hong Kong directors' confidence. Then Mark Wu Yiu Fai's dirty film DUE WEST OUR SEX JOURNEY (YUT LO HEUNG SAI) even attracted Mainland viewers to come to Hong Kong to watch it. Co-production is a double edged sword. On one hand it revived the Hong Kong film industry, on the other it killed creativity and indirectly kept local female stars from making a living. Many films in order to satisfy the co-production criteria habitually imported Mainland female stars to play the leads' wives. Zhou Xun, Fan Bingbing, Zhang Jingchu, Betty Sun Li and others were frequently seen while local female stars have become fewer and fewer, leaving only Miriam Yeung Chin Wa and Sammi Cheng Sau Man. The Hong Kong Film Awards, for example, presented Best Actress to Zhang Ziyi, Zhou Xun, Gong Li and Siqin Gaowa, obviously local female stars have already lost their successors. As for cultivating film talent, the government in 2007 allocated 300 million to the film development fund. Yet due to its complicated application process and numerous restrictions, its use was less than practical. In conclusion, film's change over ten years has been positive. Yet hopefully Hong Kong directors will be able to make even more outstanding work that can defend local nucleus value. 2003 Best Actor: Tony Leung Chiu Wai Best Actress: Angelica Lee Sinjie Highest Box Office Film: TWINS EFFECT (CHIN GEI BIN, 28 million) Cinema number: 57 2013 (as of June) Best Actor: Tony Leung Ka Fai Best Actress: Miraim Yeung Chin Wa Highest Box Office Film: JOURNEY TO THE WEST: CONQUERING THE DEMONS (SAI YAU GONG MOR PIN, 28 million) Cinema number: 46 Television Changes in television in the past ten years could be summed up with one station monopoly. Enjoying habitual rating TVB thrived alone; after several ownership changes ATV fell and could not get up, as its on and off screen morale was lost. In 2003 ATV still produced its own series like LIGHT OF MILLION HOPES (MAN GA DUNG FOR) to battle TVB, but since Wang Zheng took over ATV in 2010, it just purchased outside series as artists were set aside; in order to reduce production cost programs were re-ran and re-ran again, forcing out even loyal viewers. Two years ago it even misreported the death of Jiang Zemin and created an international farce. ATV's half surrender attitude indirectly made TVB less than ambitious, without any determination to change. This trend could be seen from just TVB series alone. In 2003, countless series had good word of mouth, TRIUMPH IN THE SKIES (CHUNG SEUNG WON SIU), SQUARE PEGS (NGONG FU SING LUNG), and THE KING OF YESTERDAY AND TOMORROW (GAU NG JI JUEN) had both stars and stories. The average rating was over 30 points. The most important was their sincerity (relatively) could be seen. Yet in recent years series production have been sloppy. Not only were stories outdated and self conflicting, but the series were also swept into the plagiarism storm. In the end it still had to rely on a group of female stars to bare their busts to generate talk and swindle rating. The most helpless was viewers had to criticize while watching, only because they had no other choice. TVB series were frequently slammed, on certain level because of the lack of succeeding artists. Top stars like Gallen Law Ka Leung and Ada Choi Siu Fun all headed north for the gold rush, second and third rate who were less than ready were forced to take over and doing more harm than good; in recent years beauty pageant starlets were relied upon. Their acting abilities were limited, some were not even fluent in Cantonese. Delivering lines were harder for them than reciting books. Ironically, at the TVB Anniversary Awards in recent years, most Best Actor and Best Actress were experienced veterans. Two years ago, a chance to turn around the one station monopoly appeared. City Telecom Demon Child Ricky Wong Wai Kay applied for a free television license. Before any confirmation he already began recruiting, making high price offers to on and off screen elites and starting a new round of free television storm. This impact brought positive influence on television. TVB's off screen salary was drastically raised, artists were no longer limited to work at TVB. Wong Wai Kay last year invested heavily on series productions, the quality of which have been recognized. However it still has not received a license from the government and people could only keep waiting. 2003 Highest Average Rated Series: SQUARE PEGS (37 points, 2.4 million viewers) 2013 (as of June) Highest Average Rated Series: INBOUND TROUBLES (LO BIU, NEI HO YEH) (30 points, 1.93 million viewers) Music Hong Kong has no music scene, only show business. This classic quote from (Wong) Ka Kui echoed loudly in 2003. This year, two real stage superstars, Leslie Cheung Kwok Wing and Anita Mui Yim Fong, both passed away. Then we suddenly realized few singers could still hold down the fort. Since then, music has stepped into a depression. The Four Great Heavenly Kings who ruled the 90s either switched to film or off screen; Faye Wong eased out after marriage. Sammi Cheng Sau Man drastically reduced production. In the end the music award results seemed to repeat every year. Male were either Eason Chan Yik Shun or Leo Ku Kui Ke; female were either Joey Yung Cho Yi or Miriam Yeung Chin wa. They had no surprise to speak of. With the four major music awards already becoming the "altar" of benefit transfer, fans no longer decided who would win or not. Raymond Lam Fung last year won the Most Popular Male Singer amid controversy, which instead brought some alternative surprise. In the end, show business is a business. Singers have their reasons for leaving music. In the past singers could only buy records to listen to songs. Today many fans ignore intellectual property rights and download songs online, creating a major impact on the record industry. Then companies reduced record budget, behind the scene talent lost past motivation to create and had difficulty turning in good work. With rampant plagiarism, music fans would rather not pay for records and then created a vicious cycle. On the other hand, the declining singer quality was an undisputed fact. In the past even idol singers would spend time to study singing with instructors, after awhile they were able to barely hand in homework. Now singers had to make commercials, films, series, promote, singing has become a part time job. They naturally had no time to practice, how could their singing have any break through? Off key and forgetting lyrics often happened, some singers who have sung for ten years were still nervous about performing live. It is seriously embarrassing. In recent years Hong Kong music has already become a pool of deadly water. Every year only one or two songs could be called hits. Many young people have already abandoned Cantonese pop songs to listen to J-Pop and K-Pop. 2003 Hong Kong Coliseum Concert: Anita Mui Yim Fong (8 shows) 2013 (as of August) Hong Kong Coliseum Concert: Eason Chan Yik Shun (25 shows) Star Making System Stars cannot be made in one day. Aside from hard work, manager assistance is also required. Previously the star and manager relationship was mostly a working partnership. They respected each other and made money together. They rarely had any dispute over benefits. After the millennium, the star making system had a revolutionary change. New comers had to sign long term contracts with management companies to have a chance to receive the company's full support. In 2003, this formula was indeed rather effective. Twins, Cookies, Nicholas Tse Ting Fung, Shawn Yue Man Lok once became idols for young people and top stars. Yet, once stars and managers established a employee employer relationship, inevitably they received company restrictions. In particular due to commercial factors, they were forced to go against themselves in a no win situation. Today RubberBand for example is stuck with the order maintaining show. In 2007, internet and bulletin boards matured and created a new show business niche -- pseudo models. This group consists of girls who were neither model nor singer, artist. They relied on their beauty, energy and sexiness and gradually became new favorites of advertisers. In 2008, founding pseudo models Angelababy, Chrissie Chau Sau Na, Kama all released photo books and thoroughly hijacked the book fair. Pseudo models were promoted to stars, modeling agencies blew up from profits. Girls who are a little better looking would rather be pseudo models than compete for Miss Hong Kong. Unfortunately, in recent years pseudo models were all along the same vain. Almost all were "peddling flesh for glory", it was only a matter of time before fans abandon them. Also, in recent years star promotional platform was no longer limited to television or radio. They now can through weibo, facebook, Instagram to increase their exposure as well as communicate with fans. They are pulled closer together, but also would create embarrassing situations like war of words between stars and fans. Unfortunately with today's star making system, new comers before having ample training (acting, singing) are already busy making money for management companies. They would have an easier time going to Heaven than reaching Gor Gor and Ah Mui's level. 2003 Promotion Channels: Radio, television 2013 Promotion Channels: Weibo, Instagram, facebook Artist Image Once upon a time, stars would bear social responsibility and be role models for young people. Unfortunately in the past ten years, the star halo has become darker and darker. A group of young singers was unable to keep clean, began using drugs and their careers suffered. With full support at the time, Kelvin Kwan Chor Yiu and Jill Vidal (Wai Si) were arrested for drug possession in 2009. Their image plummeted. The former spent a long time to make amends, the latter seemed to have vanished from show business. yet truly affecting artist image was the 2008 sex photo scandal. Love and sex originally could not be more ordinary, sex photo was also just a personal preference. The problem was that the scandal uncovered how hypocritical artists were. They worked hard to maintain their innocent and cute image, but they were only pretending. On one hand they just said that they were against premarital sex, on the other they were caught in sex photos. From the scandals, artists inevitably gave people a "do as I say, not as I do" impression. Politically, artist politics als faded with time. At the July 1 March in 2003 Sandra Ng Kwan Yu led a group of artists in black shirts. Just ten years later, few artists had the responsibility and the guts. Some even became political pawns. Ultimately the China and Hong Kong relationship was closer than before. If artists wanted to keep their Mainland market livelihood, they could not be as daring and direct as before. 2003 July 1 March 2013 July 1 Hong Kong Dome Festival Chronology of Love and Hate 2003 April 1: Leslie Cheung Kwok Wing committed suicide on April Fool's Day at the age of 46. Like other teenagers, they’re stressing over upcoming college entrance exams – and even more so when they’re forced to join the school choir in order to fill a remaining requirement. There, their unorthodox instructor blends the principles of classic Western music and traditional Korean song. Though at first they are reluctant to learn, they soon find a love for this exciting blend of music… and are forced to band together when the school cancels their annual summer concert. Will their music survive? Tuesday, August 13, 2013 @ 7PM I AM. (New York Premiere, 2012) The music documentary I Am. follows the chart-topping 32 K-pop artists a part of SM TOWN as they prepare for a live performance at one of the world’s most prestigious venues: New York City’s Madison Square Garden. Shining light on what defines the performers and the intense effort that goes into their meticulously-staged concerts, this touching coming-of-age story is just as much about the growing pains and glory of the young artists as it is about their music. Featuring tons of incredible music and amazing K-pop cameos, this is the inside look into Korea’s popular music scene. Tuesday, July 30, 2013 @ 7PM TURN IT UP TO ELEVEN 2: WILD DAYS (New York Premiere, 2012) Galaxy Express, one of Korea’s biggest pop sensations, is known all over Asia. Their fame knows no bounds, but when the group decides to go to America, they quickly discover how difficult it can be to approach new people, cultures, and ideas. A stunning documentary that follows the legendary rock band on their most recent solo tour across America, Turn it Up to Eleven 2 is an intimate look into nineteen huge Galaxy Express concerts – and the unbelievable passion that goes into each and every one of them. Tuesday, July 16, 2013 @ 7PM PLAY (International Premiere, 2011) Mate was an indie band from Korea who happened upon fame in 2009, when Irish musician Glenn Hansard (of Swell Season and the hit musical “Once”) spotted them busking in the lobby of one of his concerts. This was the beginning of a dramatic debut, which would see bandmembers Jung Joon-Il, Yim Hun-Il, and Lee Hyun-jae rocketed to fame. Play chronicles these events, with the band appearing as themselves – and staying very truthful to their inspiring story. --- [ WHAT IS YOUR CHAFFING EDITOR LISTENING TO ] Alright Kid, you win.
