MISCELLANEOUS * (2013/06/19) The Andy Lau Tak Wa and Lin Chiling starred SWITCH (TIN GEI FU CHUN SAN GUI TOH) accumulated over 250 million yuan RMB at the Mainland box office, but its poor review was just as strong as the box office. The poor review even expanded to Hong Kong and Taiwan. The film after 6 days in release in Hong Kong made around HK$1.5 million. In Taiwan to avoid Lin Chiling to be the only target, today's premiere and all promotions have been cancelled in the last minute. Some online joked that Lin Chiling who had her heart set on being promoted from "flower vase" to "blue and white porcelain" now could only be a "flower pot". Lau Tak Wa and Lin Chiling's first collaboration made over 250 million yuan RMB in the Mainland but landed countless bad reviews. Most focused on flaws like the director's skills, the story, and editing. The film gathered all manners of film ideas but not the story itself; viewers thought they were watching a spy film that was also like a romance, but in the end it was also an action film with comedy. They truly were unable to find the theme. Some pointed out that this film was like a product placement promotional films and "the most rotten of rotten films". The film was released in Hong Kong for 6 days, its box office was only HK$1.5 million. Wa Jai only said about SWITCH being called a rotten film, "It's very fair for people to want to criticize, only every film has its own fate. I hope this film's word of mouth wouldn't affect BLIND DETECTIVE (MAN TAM)'s performance because the two films have nothing to do with each other. If you want to blame someone blame it on 'Lau Tak Wa', please do not add it to BLIND DETECTIVE." Since Wa Jai was unable to promote in Taiwan, Lin Chiling would become the only target. Thus the premiere and promotions scheduled for tonight have been cancelled. Lin Chiling replied through her manager Dannis, "Thank you film company for being attentive!" He felt that this film's various negative reviews in the Mainland have already lost focus. After discussions with the film company they decided to cancel the promotions for the recently ailing Lin Chiling to properly rest. Lin Chiling originally hoped to work with Lau Tak Wa and elevated herself from "flower vase" to "blue and white porcelain" status. Yet online rating has reduced her to "flower pot". However, many praised how well Lin Chiling maintained her figure. Her manager said, "Lin Chiling concentrated on her acting job and completed the director's requests. She should happily accept good responses, humbly accept criticism, respect and coordinate with the film company's decisions." * (2013/06/19) Nick Cheung Ka Fai and Eddie Peng Yu-Yen starred in the film UNBEATABLE (GIK JIN), which competed for the Shanghai Film Festival Golden Goblet Award. Director Dante Lam Chiu Yin promoted with them. Cheung Ka Fai and Peng Yu-Yen in the film had many scenes together, including being locked up during training and during a flip Peng Yu-Yen accidentally kissed Cheung Ka Fai. Peng Yu-Yen joked, "After this accidental kiss, our relationship got even better." Cheung Ka Fai joked, "Luckily it was a kiss scene with an actor, otherwise I would have to prepare a report for my wife." They also demonstrated the embrace as their relationship was that of master and disciple. Cheung Ka Fai also said, "I worked on this film and my finger broke, I traded a finger for this film!" * (2013/06/19) Michelle Chen recently changed her acting path in the new film BADGES OF FURY (BUT YI SUN TAM) as she played a sassy police superintendent who was often in battle of words with her subordinate Wen Zhang. Her sassy level even surprised Jet Li (Lee Nin Kit) and Wen Zhang. Michelle Chen worked on her first fight scene and wire scene. The wires pulled her to mid air the first time when she shot her falling scene. She was so scared that she screamed. * (2013/06/18) Emperor Group chief Albert Yeung Sau Sing led Charlene Choi Cheuk Yin and others to promote THE MIDAS TOUCH (CHIU CUP GAING LEI YUN) at the Shanghai Film Festival. In the film Ah Sa was the manager of a girl group. "In the film I was very mean. When they danced poorly in rehearsal or performed poorly, I would withhold food and sleep from them." This was her meanest character to date. She said, "Actually playing mean is pretty tough, even Mani (Fok Man Hei) wasn't this mean." * (2013/06/18) Eddie Cheung Siu Fai in the 3D fantasy action film THE MONKEY KING (DAI LAU TIN GUNG) played Li Jing. Earlier he went to promote at the Shanghai Film Festival with the film. He revealed that in order to focus on the character he turned down many scripts. Although he lost money, he thought the big production was worth it. Cheung Siu Fai said, "Everyday I had to spend 2 or 3 hours in the make up chair. The character also had many action scenes, which were pretty challenging. The film company will unveil more characters later." * (2013/06/18) The Strongest in the Universe Donnie Yen Chi Tan, Mainland star Eva Huang Shengyi starred new film ICEMAN 3D (3D BING FUNG HUP) two nights ago shot on location at Central near an alley. Huang Shengyi and the extras who played security guards were seen, but not Chi Tan. Stephen Shiu Jr. and his wife Michelle also visited the set. * (2013/06/18) Andy Lau Tak Wa two days ago promoted the film BLIND DETECTIVE (MAN TAM) with Sammi Cheng Sau Man and director Johnnie To Kei Fung at the Shanghai International Film Festival. Although BLIND DETECTIVE had decent response from its Cannes Film Festival screening, the recently released SWITCH (TIN GEI FU CHUN SHAN GUI TOH) was just the opposite. Many online slammed it as a rotten film. Wa Jai was asked about SWITCH's tidal wave of poor reviews and felt very awkward. He smiled and replied, "I have a lot of flaws, film selection is one of them. I am the type of person who overestimates my own vision, thinking that many movie in my hands would become good. Next time I will perform a little better, sorry, sorry!" Wa Jai said that he would learn from his failure and hoped that individual cases would not affect BLIND DETECTIVE's box office. "I felt sorry, I hoped everyone would keep them separate. I performed in SWITCH, which had nothing to do with other people or movies. I don't know how much of an impact it will have, which is something that I have no way to think of." To Kei Fung joked, "He always after making a few good movies runs into a rotten film." * (2013/06/18) Zhang Ziyi produced and starred in her film MY LUCKY STAR. Yesterday a press conference was held in Shanghai. Zhang Ziyi and Bona chief Yu Dong attended together. Zhang Ziyi said that MY LUCKY STAR had to wait 4 years after SOPHIE'S REVENGE because she had to wait for a good script. She was confident that this film would not disappoint viewers. In MY LUCKY STAR Zhang Ziyi played Sophie and traveled Southeast Asia with her special agent lover Wang Leehom to perform a dream adventure. Zhang Ziyi received boss Yu Dong's compliment as one of the most excellent producers because the production not only did not exceed its budget but also had money left! * (2013/06/18) Hollywood director Oliver Stone just received the 16th Shanghai International Film Festival Lifetime Achievement Award. He and Johnnie To Kei Fung yesterday attended the Master Class II: how does film have its influence on real life? forum. To Kei Fung felt that his latest film BLIND DETECTIVE will be an influential film in the future. "This film should be ahead of its time, years later it still will be influential." Oliver Stone has always paid attention to To Kei Fung's films. He thought that To Kei Fung's films were full of cold violent aesthetics, which he enjoyed very much. Thus he looked forward to BLIND DETECTIVE very much. "The film has already been sold to Europe, North America and Australia markets. If I don't watch it while I am in Shanghai, I will when I return to the U.S." To Kei Fung also appreciated Oliver Stone's films. "His movies have critical thinking of the society." * (2013/06/18) To promote the 5th China Film Festival opening film THE GRANDMASTERS (YUT DOI JUNG SI) in Korea, Tony Leung Chiu Wai, Zhang Ziyi and Song Hye-Kyo earlier dressed up for their red carpet appearance. Director Wong Kar Wai later praised Song Hye-Kyo as "The prettiest female star in Asia, her face is perfect" and regretted that he was "unable to increase her role". Two days ago, two hours before the China Film Festival opening ceremony, Korean paparazzi caught Song Hye-Kyo appearing in a Gangnam beauty salon in preparation for the event. Earlier when THE GRANDMASTERS was released overseas, Song Hye-Kyo was busy with the Korean series THAT WINTER, THE WIND BLOWS and was unable to promote. Thus she particularly valued this red carpet walk with Wai Jai and others. However, according to his designer and hair stylist, Song Hye-Kyo in clothing, accessories and hairstyle selections repeatedly asked for simplicity first. She said that since she was attending the China Film Festival, the stars should be the Mainland stars who made the trip to Korea. Even so, Song Hye-Kyo's refreshing image held its hold as she and Zhang Ziyi displayed different feminine beauty. Wai Jai even praised his on screen wife for her elegance. Director Wong Kar Wai praised Song Hye-Kyo as "the most beautiful female star in Asia. Her face is perfect" and regretted that he was "unable to increase her role". * (2013/06/17) Huayi Brothers yesterday announced its future plans at the 16th Shanghai Film Festival. Attendees included Feng Xiaogang, Tsui Hark and others. Jackie Chan's CZ12 (SUP YI SUN CHIU) made over 1 billion globally and landed in the top three among Chinese films. Jackie Chan will work with Huayi again to produce and star in two new films MANHATTAN and WOLF FLAG. * (2013/06/17) Korean diva Song Hye-Kyo has always been rumored to be upset at how long THE GRANDMASTERS (YUT DOI JUNG SI) production time was and how his role was reduced to only 6 minutes, thus she was at odds with director Wong Kar Wai. However, they finally overcame their differences as they attended the 2013 China Film Festival opening ceremony in Seoul. Tony Leung Chiu Wai appeared with his on screen wife Song Hye-Kyo on the left and companion "Gong er" Zhang Ziyi on the right. Wai Jai even praised Song Hye-Kyo as a very charming actress. "All encounters would ultimately lead to a reunion", which was a classic line from THE GRANDMASTERS. Song Hye-Kyo and Wong Kar Wai yesterday reunited in Seoul, did it feel like a reunion after a long time apart for them? "Ip Man" Leung Chiu Wai's wife Song Hye-Kyo never appeared to assist with THE GRANDMASTERS promotion from its production wrap to release. Reportedly she felt that she "waited more than shot", the production dragged on too long and her role was reduced, thus she was very upset. After her contract ended she could only leave the team. At the same time, because her role was reduced to 6 minutes, the other lead actress Zhang Ziyi stole the spotlight. Song Hye-Kyo thus was rather upset as well. When the film was released, Song Hye-Kyo claimed that she was in a production and thus was unable to promote. This time THE GRANDMASTERS was invited to be the Korea "2013 China Film Festival" opening film. She dispelled the dispute rumor and showed her support. She had no grievance with Zhang Ziyi and chatted often. They later will work together on John Woo (Ng Yu Sum)'s film. This time was a warm up, otherwise when they worked together they would be rumored to be at odds again. Wai Jai had two great beauties with him. When he left the stage he even lightly gave Song Hye-Kyo a hand and attentively took care of this on screen wife. After the opening ceremony they caught up at dinner. Wai Jai's assistant posted the photos online. Wong Kar Wai sat with Song Hye-Kyo. Wai Jai lightly embraced Zhang Ziyi. All the dispute rumors were swept away. Wai Jai said that although it was his first collaboration with Song Hye-Kyo, he has watched her television series long ago. "When I watched her television series she felt that she was as cute and pretty like a young girl. When we worked together on the film, I realized that she displayed a completely different side that was also very charming and felt even more mature." Wai Jai praised Song Hye-Kyo and the film's era as rather well matched, and she was a very charming actress. * (2013/06/17) The 3D fantasy action film THE MONKEY KING (SAI YAU GEI ji DAI LAU TIN GUNG) held a press conference in Shanghai. Chow Yun Fat, Donnie Yen Chi Tan, Aaron Kwok Fu Sing, Peter Ho Yun Tung, Eddie Cheung Siu Fai, Joe Chen Chiau-En and Zhang Zilin attended. This film will be a holiday release and the trailer was shown. Yen Chi Tan as the Monkey King and Zhang Zilin as Nuwa were unveiled. Fat Gor as the Jade Emperor, Kwok Fu Sing as the Bull Demon King will follow. At the event, Fat Gor said, "Yen Chi Tan is a god, Kwok Fu Sing is a bull, and I am a human. Thus the Jade Emperor performance is relaxed and at ease." Yen Chi Tan described the Monkey King character as sexy and spellbinding. Sing Sing said that the Bull Demon King was responsible for the magical fantasy. Yen Chi Tan was the lead actor and the action director. He revealed that the Monkey King's make up took 5 hours everyday before work. After the shoot he also had to spend 1 hour to remove the make up. When he did not have a scene, he also was responsible for the action direction. Was he willing to accept this challenge again? He admitted that he was afraid. "This type of work has huge impact on my own health and psychological pressure. Thus it's impossible to withstand this 'monkey punishment' again!" Fat Gor, Sing Sing and Yen Chi Tan also discussed the fight scenes. Their review of Yen Chi Tan was "the best fighting actor"; they thought that his professionalism, his pursuit of action kung fu and art all coordinated with this title. Yen Chi Tan said that he was very pleased with his Monkey King portrayal and said that it was sexy and charming. Just the monkey fur alone already had many under his spell. With Fat Gor admitting to be romantic and Yen Chi Tan sexy, Sing Sing did not join in. He said, "My character was responsible for the film's magical fantasy. My costume and props all required an extraordinary amount of strength." Also on hand was Erlang Shen Ho Yun Tung. He revealed that this god was a little bad. As for the Zhang Zilin played Nuwa, her refreshing look received praises. She said that she wanted to play the Goddess of Mercy. Chen Chiau-En played Princess Iron Fan. She joked, "Princess Iron Fan was pregnant for 300 years, she was in an advanced maternal age. * (2013/06/17) The film BLIND DETECTIVE (MAN TAM) yesterday held a press conference in Shanghai. Andy Lau Tak Wa, Sammi Cheng Sau Man, director Johnnie To Kei Fung and producer Wai Ka Fai attended. 4000 people jammed the venue. To Sir brought red win to the stage and chatted as he drank. BLIND DETECTIVE will be released on July 4. To Sir and Wa Jai both picked Sammi to win Best Actress with this film. To Sir, Wa Jai and Sammi have not worked together for ten years. To Sir said that the box office was unimportant, what he valued was their friendship. The lack of a Hong Kong Film Award for Sammi last time left him fuming for ten years. He praised Sammi, "Being able to perform a comedy as relaxed and naturally as her was very rare." As for Wai Ka Fai he only wanted to make Wa Jai and Sammi even more amazing. Wa Jai said that in the film Sammi slapped him. He has never been hit like that in his life, Sammi was the only one. He also said that originally his eyes were the most powerful, but To Sir kept him from using them. Thus this time he did not want Best Actor and hoped that Sammi would win Best Actress and To Sir would win Best Director. With To Sir and Wa Jai's support for Best Actress, Sammi thanked them for the room to demonstrate her skills. She said that if Wa Jai was coffee, To Sir was milk, she was sugar and screen writer Yau Nai Hoi was the cup. To Sir was asked if he felt Wa Jai's performance in the film resembled his personality. He joked that if he was Wa Jai he would be rich! To Sir felt that Wa Jai's performance was not too similar to him, but everyone thought it was. He hoped to switch identities with Wa Jai. He would star while Wa Jai directed. To Sir joked that To Sir would have a tougher time with intimate scenes and have to lose weight for bed scenes. * (2013/06/17) Charlene Choi Cheuk Yin two nights ago attended the 16th Shanghai International Film Festival with boss Albert Yeung Sau Sing, manager Mani Fok Man Hei and several junior colleagues. They attended her film THE MIDAS TOUCH (CHIU CUP GAING LEI YUN) press conference. Emperor Motion Pictures landed over HK$10 million in jewelry sponsorship for Ah Sa nad others and arranged for them to walk the red carpet. The red carpet was a piece of cake for Ah Sa, she saw how nervous her junior colleagues were and immediately encouraged them. Two nights ago Yeung Sau Sing invited Oliver Stone to dinner and catch up. Ah Sa was one of the guests and even chatted with him. Although she was busy with work, Ah Sa yesterday still took time to have Japanese food with Sa Pa to celebrate Father's Day; the father and the daughter both wore sunglasses. Ah Sa wrote online, "I wish all the Papas in the world a Happy Father's Day. Daddy I love you!" Sa Pa replied, "Haha...got it...very grateful...I am really proud of u...I wish we will always be father and daughter forevvvvvvvvvvvveeeeeeeeeeerrrrrrrrrrrr......I wish you will always be happy....all your wishes come true...but the most important is good health...strong strong strong." Choi Cheuk Yin and Mainland artist Gao Yunxiang walked the red carpet for their film THE MIDAS TOUCH. Playing a couple Ah Sa and Gao Yunxiang also had great chemistry off screen. They both chose to wear black and white. In the film Ah Sa played a manager who made Gao Yunxiang into a star with both love and a desire to control. The story was based on a true story as it unveiled a Hong Kong show business survival story. Yeung Sau Sing even brought Ah Sa to Mainland actor Xu Zheng's Japanese restaurant to meet with Hollywood director Oliver Stone and celebrate his Film Award for Lifetime Achievement at the film festival. * (2013/06/17) Jay Chou (Chow Kit Lun)'s second film as a director, THE ROOF TOP (TIN TOI OI CIHNG) appeared at the Shanghai Film Festival. He and "J Girl" Li Xinai attended with co-stars Wang Xueqi and Xu Fan. This film changed its Chinese title from TIN TOI to TIN TOI OI CHING (ROOF TOP LOVE) for its Mainland release. Chow Kit Lun explained that the Mainland already had another film with that title in release. The same title would make box office calculation difficult. Thus aside from the Mainland, the title remained THE ROOF TOP elsewhere. He said that the title was not important, director Chow Kit Lun was. Chow Kit Lun came up with Wang Xueqi's costume in the film, pairing his serious look with such exaggerated clothing. Chow Kit Lun said, "Teacher Wang also thought that the costume was interesting." Wang Xueqi said that Chow Kit Lun was a smart director. Chow Kit Lun also coaxed Xu Fan to give her first time on screen with her first musical number. After the shoot she joked that she felt several years younger. Li Xinai in the film had romantic moments with Chow Kit Lun. She said that the feeling was very real. Chow Kit Lun said that he just let the two elder actors perform freely. He did not dare to comment as being able to work with them was already a honor. Chow Kit Lun said that he was not playing around with film and hoped to start a musical film revolution. He also revealed that non smoker Wang Xueqi during his cigar scene fainted on the set. Wang Xueqi said that he found out later that he could not inhale a cigar, he would not faint if he just kept it in his mouth. * (2013/06/16) The 16th Shanghai International Film Festival held its opening ceremony last night, with several hundred stars on the red carpet. Chow Yun Fat led THE MONKEY KING (SAI YAU GEI JI DAI LAU TIN GUNG) team that included Aaron Kwok Fu Sing, Donnie Yen Chi Tan, Joe Chen Chiau-En, Peter Ho Yun Tung, Eddie Cheung Siu Fai. Other stars included Andy Lau Tak Wa, Jay Chou (Chow Kit Lun), Mini Yang Mi, Vivian Hsu (Tsui Yeuk Suen), Huang Xiaoming and others. Tsui Hark and Oliver Stone received "Chinese Film Award For Outstanding Contribution" and "Film Award for Lifetime Achievement respectively. Still recovering from his leg ailment, Huang Xiaoming walked the red carpet with the MOTHER ANDROID II and AMAZING teams. Tall Korean hunk Jo In-Sung walked the red carpet alone to the shrieks of female fans like at a fan club meeting. Sammi Cheng Sau Man was unable to attend, as Andy Lau Tak Wa, Johnnie To Kei FUng and Wai Ka Fai made an appearance for BLIND DETECTIVE (MAN TAM). Lau Tak Wa's fans welcomed him. Chow Kit Lun appeared as THE ROOFTOP's director and actor. He said that he participated in the music creation and action design as well. The committee presented Chinese Film Award For Outstanding Contribution to Tsui Hark. Andy Lau said, "I am very happy to be invited to introduce this friend. I have been in the business for over 30 years and made over 130 films, but I have only worked with him once. That time I learned how to act, how to find a movie that both the audience and I like. He enabled me to see the world from another angle, without forgetting my expectation and respect of you." Tsui Hark said that he was very happy to receive the award. He thanked his collaboration partners, investors and good friend of many years Shi Nansun. * (2013/06/16) Lin Chiling and Andy Lau Tak Wa spoke to Cable's Film Montage. She said that in SWITCH she had a variety of costumes to attract Lau Tak Wa's attention, which was close to her view on love. "If I run into a man who I love very much, I would spare nothing to win him over." Her student look in the film was her favorite, as it enabled her to relive her youth. Lau Tak Wa said that the two lead actresses had their own specialties. "Lin Chiling is a good student who is very obedient; Zhang Jingchu is the academic type, everything has to be very clear. On the set she keeps on asking why." He even shared his view on "Even the strongest warrior can be seduced by a beautiful woman." "This is something that never changes. This film is very strange. When lead actresses fight they wear so little." * (2013/06/16) Aaron Kwok Fu Sing earlier attended the film SILENT WITNESS' Beijing film poster press conference. Speaking of his film CHRISTMAS ROSE' poor box office performance. He stressed that actors had no way of estimating the box office and audience taste. "Hard work, acting abilities, word of mouth, box office and awards may not have direct correlations. What I can do is play my character well. I believe that as long as I work hard, one day I will be able to perform a film with a good box office." As for Andy Lau Tak Wa's SWITCH was a word of mouth bomb and a box office hit, Sing Sing declined to comment. "As an actor, I should comment on other people's films. Otherwise it's very unfair. I understand that each actor has given for their work and his helplessness in other production segments." Sing Sing stressed that he has not made a rotten film in over a decade. He said, "When I perform well I don't have box office, does everyone want me to play a little more rotten?" * (2013/06/16) Vivian Hsu (Tsui Yeuk Suen) is busy with the Jeff Lau Chun Wai comedy film but still takes time to attend the Shanghai Film Festival. Her films MOTHER ANDROID II, SEX AGOGO and HEAR RAIN are all promoting at the film festival. Tsui Yeuk Suen and her MOTHER ANDROID II co-star Huang Xiaoming walked the red carpet. MOTHER and HEAR are both her specialty of romantic film. On the other hand in SEX AGOGO she plays a student who is taking a sexual climax poll. In the film she even has a sexy and cute performance, from which she has had a lot of fun. "My grasp of the comedy pace is getting better and better." * (2013/06/16) Zhang Ziyi, Tony Leung Chiu Wai and Wong Kar Wai yesterday attended the 2013 China Film Festival opening film THE GRANDMASTERS (YUT DOI JUNG SI)'s event in Seoul. Because Zhang Ziyi tomorrow will have to attend the Shanghai Film Festival to promote her film MY LUCKY STAR, she was unable to stay for long in Korea. After finishing her work she had to return immediately. * (2013/06/16) Veteran actor Newton Lai Han Chi three days ago (13th) due to pneumonia at the age of 62. His TALES FROM THE DARK (KEI WAN YEH) co-star Susan Shaw Yam Yam said that she learned about his passing on the night of the 13th but declined to say more. At the same time Lai Han Chi's son also confirmed the news with a friend "Sister Tse", who made the announcement online. Thus the news spread. Industry insiders were saddened. At the same time TALES FROM THE DARK's producer Tang Han Keung said that Lai Han Chi was hospitalized last Saturday and passed away Thursday night due to pneumonia. Although Lai Han Chi has already become a metaphysics master for years, he still had contacts with industry insiders. Recently he even guest starred in the Lawrence Ah Mon (Lau Kwok Cheung) directed TALES FROM THE DARK (KEI WAN YEH). When he appeared in the March press conference, he looked much thinner than before but was in decent spirit. No one expected months later the news of his passing would come so suddenly. Yesterday Lai Han Chi's good friend "Sister Tse" announced Lai Han Chi's passing online. She was close to industry insiders and was Ban Ban's god sisters. Ban Ban said that she learned the news from her. Because God Sister and Lai Han Chi were friends, she could not accept the news. Helplessness was reality, she could only wish him a safe journey. Ban Ban said that although she did not see Lai Han Chi often in recent years, they have been working together since his first ATV series TIGER HILL TRAIL (JOI HEUNG FU SAN HUNG). She even lamented the passing of two good friends So Hung Suen and Lai Han Chi within a week and felt even more than life was uncertain and must be properly cherished. Lai Han Chi's secondary school classmate Nina Paw Hee Ching was very surprised to hear the news. She said that when he was in secondary school, he already had quite a presence due to his tall and handsome look. Later they had less contact as they had lives of their own. in recent years due to his wife's passing he was much thinner when she saw him. She did not expect to suddenly receive the bad news. Tsui Siu Ming who cast Lai Han Chi in TIGER HILL TRAIL back then, he turly hoped the news was not true. Several days ago So Hung Suen just left. Brother Siu Ming said that he has worked with Lai Han Chi many times in RTV and ATV. His work attitude was great. Thus after THE LEGENDARY FOK (DAI HUP FOK YUEN GAP) he almost always had a role. Yet recently they had little contact, he truly could not expect this. Lai Han Chi was born in 1951, nicknamed Lai Head. In 1979 he joined the show business, due to his size and agility he mainly worked on action series. He was right for playing both good and evil. His representative work was in THE LEGENDARY FOK with Michelle Yim (Mai Shuet) and Wong Yuen Sun as the villain Lung Hoi Sun. In 1985 he joined TVB and played Master Yat Tung in THE LEGEND OF THE CONDOR HEROES 1994 (SEH DIU YING HUNG JUEN) and Kuk Yeung in STATE OF DIVINITY (SIU NGO GONG WU). In recent years he guest starred in TWIN OF BROTHERS (DAI TONG SEUNG LUNG JUEN) and STRIKE AT HEART (GAING YIM YUT CHEUNG). His final work was the film TALES OF THE DARK. Last year he revealed that in 2005 he reached a low point in his life, as his parents and his wife passed away one after another. IN 2011 he even spat up blood for 5 days but still survived. He even said that at the end of 2010 his luck could change, unfortunately he still could not escape the sudden attack of sickness. * (2013/06/15) International director John Woo (Ng Yu Sum) took a break to recover from illness. After five years, LOVE AND LET LOVE recently announced its July production start and confirmed that Takeshi Kaneshiro (Gum Sing Mo) and Huang Xiaoming to be its lead actors opposite lead actresses Zhang Ziyi and Song Hye-Kyo. Originally Song Hye-Kyo was to pair with Chang Chen, but due to scheduling issues he finally turned it down. Xiaoming was not afraid of being the "second choice". When he received the invitation he agreed without any hesitation. He felt that being able to work with Ng Yu Sum would be able to widen his performing art vision. However Xiaoming's manager has been quiet and said that it was inconvenient to make any response. * (2013/06/15) Focusing on his film work this year, Andy Lau Tak Wa yesterday announced that on September 11 he will perform the first show of his Andy Lau China concert tour 2013 in Shanghai. Actually Wa Jai has not performed an indoor concert in the Mainland for almost 10 years. This time the organizer even invested around HK$100 million to bring the Hong Kong Coliseum four sided stage design to the Mainland and expanded the stage for closer contact with fans. Aside from Shanghai, Wa Jai will perform in Nanjing, Guangzhou, Beijing and other places and even plan several shows at each locations. Wa Jai has selected many classic songs to perform with his fans. After SWITCH (TIN GEI FU CHUN SHAN GUI TOH) and BLIND DETECTIVE (MAN TAM) film promotions he will officially begin rehearsing for the tour. * (2013/06/15) Zhang Ziyi and Tony Leung Chiu Wai yesterday flew to Seoul, Korea to prepare for the China Film Festival Sunday with famous director Wong Kar Wai. Several dozen fans and the media welcomed them at the airport. They were very friendly as they often waved to the crowd and accept flowers. Zhang Ziyi even went to sign autographs for fans. Zhang Ziyi recently has been bombarded for her fashion choices. Three days ago when she wore Moschino's latest 2013 fashion to THE VOICE OF CHINA taping, she did not expect to be strongly criticized. Some accused her of deliberately dressing young, her face and her look were completely incompatible, as a mentor she should not wear student clothing; even in Korea she still was "attacked", as some online blasted her for being outdated with her causal wear. She was even more outdated than 60s black and white film stars. Luckily Korean media still praised her choice of clothing as comfortable and friendly. Wai Jai as usual wore the simple denim look, his killer smile but his sunglasses covered up his electrifying eyes. Zhang Ziyi, Wai Jai and Wong Kar Wai tomorrow will participate in the China Film Festival press conference. They will walk the red carpet alongside Korean stars Jang Dong-Gun, Jung Woo-Sung, Park Shin-Hye and others. Zhang Ziyi and Wai Jai will host the opening ceremony together and meet with Korean fans. On the 17th Zhang Ziyi will leave Seoul for Shanghai to attend the Shanghai Film Festival with MY LUCKY STAR. * (2013/06/14) The VUGLARIA (DAI JOOK HEI KET) Hong Kong Film Award Best Supporting Actress DaDa Chan Jing earlier accepted the Fruit Chan Gor directed TALES FROM THE DARK (MAI LEI YEH). In the film's three stories she and Susan Shaw Yam Yam performed in one. Playing a female ghost this time, DaDa said, "Since I started, people who ask me to make movies all want me to display my figure but overlook my acting. This film although I play a ghost I can demonstrate my acting abilities." * (2013/06/14) Johnson Lee Si Jit's program OFFICE OF PRACTICAL JOKES has spread fear across the entire entertainment industry and became a hit. However Si Jit stated that in the short term he would not make more episodes. "At first it will be a year, so people would be so scared to see me." Actually in the "final episode" his victim Nancy Sit Ka Yin also forced him to "wash his hands in the golden basin" and retire from practical jokes. Si Jit also wanted to challenge himself. "In August this year I will make a live action version of OLD MASTER Q (LO FU JI). I have always wanted to make a category I film, like a Disney film that is for the whole family and the entire world can watch." As for casting, he revealed that Ellen Chan Nga Lun and child star Crystal Lee Hing Hau will participate. "I will play Old Master Q. (Will he have a romance?) How can Old Master Q be without Miss Chan. (Will Miss Chan be Chan Nga Lun?) She is one of the female leads, but not Miss Chan. (Will you have a character for your girlfriend Wang Lukian (Wong Bo Bo)?) Hahahaha, I haven't wanted one yet. If I have a right one I can cast her and see. (She still needs casting? You are so familiar!) Haha, I am not talking about personal stuff! (It's work!) I will use the right one, I wouldn't write a character just for her." * (2013/06/14) Annie Liu (Lau Sum Yau) two days ago went to Malaysia to work on the Nick Cheung Ka Fai directed and starred film MENG LAN SUN GUNG. Due to the heat, the team arranged for workers to hold an umbrella, a fan and wipe her sweat for her. She joked that she was the Empress Dowager. The demanding Ka Fai during the shoot shot a dramatic scene with Sum Yau and took 9 takes. Oxide Pang Shun who was a surprise visitor on the set joked, "She didn't present incense today, no wonder she had to shoot 8 more times. If she did, she would be done in two!" Sum Yau in the film had to perform Cantonese opera with Carrie Ng Ka Lai. During the shoot, Ka Fai also arranged for them to study with an instructor for a more convincing performance. Two days ago at the first day of work, Sum Yau received special treatment as she waited. She joked, "I became the Empress Dowager." She also said that because in her last film she spoke Putonghua and this time she spoke Cantonese, the hardest part of the first day was "changing the channel". She not only had to avoid using Putonghua but also focus on her own and her co-star's performance. Sum Yau this time traveled with her mother. "Because I always went abroad for movies, I thought this was the best way. I could increase the time that I spend with my family." Because it was a ghost film, she revealed, a friend gave her a glass bottle as a charm for her. During the shoot she carried it around. During the shoot, Ka Fai's friend and director Pang Shun suddenly visited the set. Ka Fai said, "He came to collect protection money, as soon as I give him laisee he leaves." Pang Shun pointed out that Malaysia was his real home as his wife Angelica Lee Sinjie and his daughter was born here. "Ka Fai came to my turf to make a movie, I came to remind him that ghost film productions require incense everyday. Did you present incense today?" Ka Fai replied, "I did yesterday." Pang Shun laughed and said, "No incense, no wonder you had to shoot it 9 times. If you did, twice and you are done!" Pang Shun also admitted, "I am a little envious of Ka Fai because he was able to an investor to make an authentic Hong Kong ghost film. Now very few investors would make this subject. I am getting a little itchy too, hoping to be able to make an authentic Hong Kong ghost film again." * (2013/06/14) Shawn Yue Man Lok, Chapman To Man Jat, Derek Tsang Kwok Cheung and Matthew Chow Hoi Kwong earlier put on pairs of underwear to pose for the Pang Ho Cheung produced category III film SDU: SEX DUTIES UNIT (FEI FU CHOOK JING) poster and promotional stills. Ah Jat was the most confident and the most endowed as he appeared in a pair of briefs while the other three only wore boxer briefs. Ah Jat even claimed that Lok Jai was padding. "I saw him stuff a sock in there." Lok Jai could not be bothered with Ah Jat's charge and boasted, "So what if I did?" Former model Lok Jai should find underwear photo shoots to be normal, but he was somewhat shy when he said, "I posed in swimwear before, but in underwear this is the first." Chow Hoi Kwong said that before the shoot he had to work out his muscles, Ah Jat asked him where did he work out? Tsang Kwok Cheung said that he needed to oil up before hand, Ah Jat asked him where did he oil up? Finally To Man Jat revealed that before the shoot he hid in the bathroom to watch a porno film. * (2013/06/14) Best known for her mother roles, veteran actress So Hung Suen two days ago passed away from heart failure due to diabetes at the age of 62. An excellent actress, Sister Suen in recent years due to illness reduced her performance. Occasionally she would operate her vegetarian restaurant. Sister Suen last year with LIFE WITHOUT PRINCIPLE (DUET MING GUM) won the Hong Kong Film Award Best Supporting Actress and added a brilliant chapter to her film career. Reporters yesterday waited for Sister Suen's family to appear at the hospital but her husband Hui Sing Biu and their son did not appear, conceivably they were busy with the funeral arrangements. The Performing Artist Guild also contacted Sister Suen's family to see if any assistance was needed. Her family so far has not made any special request. Sister Suen was a student of TVB's first training class. She worked at TVB for 24 years and left a lot of vaulable work. TVB in memory of her selected one of her representative work LOOKING BACK IN ANGER (YI BUT YUNG CHING) for rerun on its Classic station starting June 19. Sister Suen was not only recognized for her acting but also her relationships with fellow actors. Her past "children" also remembered her online. Sister Suen played Kit Lo (Tony Leung Chiu Wai)'s mother in POLICE CADET (SUN JAT SI HING) and the victim of of the Law Lan played new wife's bullying. Sister Suen in LOOKING BACK IN ANGER played Aunt Wan who took care of 4 children, finally Ting Yau Hong (Deric Wan Siu Lun) killed her. The past series villain "Ting Yau Hong" Wan Siu Lun remembered Sister Suen. "Respected Ms. So Hung Suen, have a safe journey! Why do we always miss people after they pass? You should truly ask yourself when people were around, have you cared about and truly missed them? Sorry but what I say is true. Sister Suen have a safe journey!" The other two adopted sons "Ting Yau Kin" Felix Wong Yat Wa and "Chow Chi Man" Leung Si Ho also eulogized her. Wong Yat Wa wrote, "Sister Suen (Aunt Wan) have a safe journey! You will always be missed!" Leung Si Ho wrote, "Aunt Wan, I wish you a safe journey! I truly miss you! You will always be in my heart! You adopted son Chow Chi Man." Leung Chiu Wai and Carina Lau Ka Ling played Sister Suen's children in POLICE CADET and SHOWBIZ TYCOON (YING SING DAI HUNG) respectively. Ka Ling remembered her online, "Sister Suen: (I wish you) reach Sukhavati soon, I missed the destiny of working with you. You will always live in our hearts. Leung Chiu Wai, Lau Ka Ling" Liza Wang Ming Chuen who has worked with So Hung Suen countless times also remembered her friends online. "The first time I worked with So Hung Suen was JING GUNG CHAN MUNG, I played Consort Zhen and she was the Empress Dowager. At the time I just started making series, she was the first artist training class new comer (1972). We had many collaborations, in DREAM OF THE RED CHAMBER Daiyu, she was Xiren; in YESTERDAY'S GLITTER I was the seventh wife, she was Kong Ngai's second wife, etc......she has always been my good partner, good colleague, good actress! Ah Suen! Deeply miss you! Have a safe journey!" Michael Tao Dai Yu said, "Sister Suen, you were my great teacher, you were my great elder, I will always remember working with you. Sister Suen, have a safe journey!" Although Sister Suen was unable to defeat her illness, she has won the praises of those of her generation and after. Yesterday So Hung Suen's husband Brother Biu and son chanted for her at the funeral home. Brother Biu already asked a dozen or so masters to chant seven days for his wife. When asked about Sister Suen's unfulfilled wish, Brother Biu admitted that basically she was okay. She just wanted to promote vegetarianism. "The children will come back to run the vegetarian restaurant." The lama from Bhutan yesterday chanted in a Buddhist ceremony for Sister Suen at the Universal Funeral Parlor. No photo was at the altar yet, only a piece of yellow paper with the words "the lotus spot for Madame Hui So Hung Suen". Brother Biu revealed that the masters learned about his wife's passing and came to chant. "So far the services have been scheduled to start on June 30 and the funeral on July 1. Her ashes will rest in a temple. Because the entire family is Buddhist, everyone is very calm. We know passing is passing, staying is staying. We understand karma. When children learned about their parents' passing they didn't cry too hard. Of course after so many years together their emotions would fluctuate. When my wife passed our family was chanting for her by her side, so she left very peacefully." Brother Biu also said that Tony Leung Chiu Wai called to send his condolences. Reporters also visited So Hung Suen's vegetarian restaurant. Speaking of how Sister Suen treated her employees, they all had nothing but praise for her as a good boss. "We know her biggest wish is to promote vegetarianism and stop butchering. We would follow and be vegetarian, and run this membership club (vegetarian restaurant) for Sister Suen. Her husband and son would come everyday and we will keep running it together." Employees said that they will attend the funeral and learned that many of Sister Suen's friends will appear to send Sister Suen on her final journey. * (2013/06/14) Diana Pang Dan's directing debut ON THE NAN NI WAN FRONTIER after its Mainland release caught American producers' attention. She was invited to work on the Chinese American co-production about the War Against Japanese Aggression, B29 ROMANCE's Chinese director. Earlier she went to the U.S. to meet with the producer and the screen writers and talked about casting. The film will start production next year and shoot in China and the U.S. with an investment of US$80 million. Pang Dan this year will direct the 25 million yuan RMB production GA YAU SUN B about a 1 year old baby from outer space with super powers. Half of the production budget will be spent on its special effects. * (2013/06/14) Vivian Hsu (Tsui Yeuk Suen) in her new film SEX AGOGO played a reserved doctorate candidate whose professor asked her to conduct a survey of "sexual climate in Taiwan". When she experienced a variety of conditions with different identities, she always ran into trouble. her friends knew that she had trouble with sex and thus recommended sex expert Tin Kai Man to assist her. When they were ready, trouble arrived. Tin Kai Man could only run out of Tsui Yeuk Suen's room naked. Tsui Yeuk Suen said, "During the shoot I couldn't hold back my laughter and had bad takes. Working with a good friend on a comedy is truly too funny." * (2013/06/13) Suffering from diabetes, So Hung Suen yesterday passed away at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital at the age of 62. Earlier her right foot began to rot and she had numerous operations. She had to remove the rotten flesh on one of her toes and the bottom of her foot. Reportedly aside from diabetes she also had a light stroke and a tumor in her belly. So Hung Suen's son last night around 8PM announced the news of his mother's passing to the media. "Mommy around 4PM left this world. She went very peacefully. Mommy's final journey will be handled with a Buddhist ceremony." He revealed that his mother passed away from complications from a stroke. "The doctor will discuss the details. I want to say that Mommy went very peacefully. Most of the most important family members were around her, so Mommy had no regret." So Hung Suen's husband Hui Sing Biu arrived around 8:30PM. He looked calm and often covered his mouth with his hand. Law Lan and Yu Mo Lin who have always stayed in touch with So Hung Suen yesterday confirmed the news of So Hung Suen's passing. Yu Mo Lin said, "Earlier she suffered a stroke and her belly had a tumor. However the worst part was she was anemic, her body was very weak. The doctor didn't dare to operate on her." Law Lan was rather sadden by the passing of her good friend. She admitted that she heard the news from Maggie Chan Mei Kei. "Sunday I went to her home. She was speaking and called me Sister Law Lan." Playing mother and son with So Hung Suen in the classic series POLICE CADET (SUN JAT SI HING), Tony Leung Chiu Wai was very sadden to learn about her death. "Sister Suen and I are both Buddhists, I hope Sister Suen will soon reach Sukhavati. I will always remember the destiny of working with her." His wife Carina Lau Ka Ling said, "Sister Suen was a very gentle actress without any grievance with the world. She was serious about work, kind and caring to her colleagues. I wish for her to reach Sukhavati soon. She will forever live in my heart." Johnnie To Kei Fung, the director of So Hung Suen's final work LIFE WITHOUT PRINCIPLE (DUET MING GUM), said that he just dined with her several months ago. He admitted that the news came too suddenly. "Ultimately life in the end requires a period. Aside from her outstanding acting, her merciful and charitable heart has put a perfect period to her life." So Hung Suen in 1972 enrolled in TVB's first artist training class, with classmates like Ching Ho Wai, Hui Siu Hung and Kam Kwok Leung. Because Sister So looked older than her actual age, she often played mother or elderly characters. Sister So's acting was excellent as she participated in around 50 television series. She had a lot of representative work, her best known character was Leung Chiu Wai's mother in POLICE CADET. In 1996 she left TVB to assist her husband in their Buddhist vegetarian restaurant business. However she returned to ATV in 1999 for a series and would occasionally participate in film as well. Last year with LIFE WITHOUT PRINCIPLE she won the Hong Kong Film Award Best Supporting Actress. However at the time she was being treated for diabetes at the hospital, thus she was unable to personally accept the award. So Hung Suen's vegetarian restaurant business also suffered several setbacks. In 2005 due to rapidly rising rent, she and her husband decided to close their Mongkok vegetarian restaurant. In 2006 they began to sell pillows at a Fa Yuen Street stall with a daily rent of HK$400. Then in 2008 they opened the Cute Fei Vegetarian restaurant in Tsim Sha Tsui. It is still in operation. She and her husband also met due to the vegetarian restaurant. They wed in 1988 and had a son and a daughter. So Hung Suen's final public appearance was on January 27 at a Karmapa public event, also on hand were Annie Liu On Lai, Bonnie Law Ming Chu and Fennie Yuen Kit Ying. Winning the Hong Kong Film Award Best Supporting Actor in 2012 with So Hung Suen, Lo Hoi Pang said, "Half a year ago I went to To Kei Fung's party with Sister Suen. I learned that her health was poor and she was much thinner. (Were you thinking about asking her to watch your show?) I didn't want to disturb her! Diabetes really is troublesome." Her first training class classmate Kam Kwok Leung said, "We had no contact in recent years. Earlier when I was a Hong Kong Film Award juror. When she won with LIFE WITHOUT PRINCIPLE, people misunderstood that it was because we were classmates. (Did you feel heartbroken and sudden when you heard the news?) No, at a certain age people expect it, instead I would see if there is anything that I want to. I would try to do it instead of safeguarding my life. This should be the attitude to have in life. She believed in the Buddha, I believe she would think that way." Fellow training class classmate Hui Siu Hung said, "I heard the news. I rarely contact old classmates. Recently I haven't seen her. I knew that she had diabetes and a tumor, which were quite troublesome." Performing Artist Guild secretary general Astrid Chan Chi Ching said, "The Performing Artist Guild now is contacting Sister Suen's family. If any need arises, the Performing Artist Guild will fully assist. Sister Suen was a very nice person, I am very saddened." So Hung Suen's LIFE WITHOUT PRINCIPLE co-star Denise Ho Wan Si said, "Sister Suen was a good actress who show business should have more of, being able to work with her in LIFE WITHOUT PRINCIPLE was my honor. I will always miss her!" * (2013/06/13) Action actor Ashton Chen (Shi Xiaolong) two nights ago was caught dining out with his girlfriend, but his driver got into a scuffle with reporters. According to Mainland reports, that night Shi Xiaolong first hinted, "Looking around to see if any photographer is around?" Then his driver through the car door punched a reporter, whose glasses flew off and equipment was damaged. The reporter went to the police and Shi Xiaolong and his driver quickly drove home. Finally the police brought them back to the police station for investigation. Afte r 6 hours, they reached a settlement. Shi Xiaolong apologized to and compensated the reporter. Shi Xiaolong around 6AM left the police station with a medical mask but did not make any response. * (2013/06/13) Jay Chou (Chow Kit Lun)'s second directed and starred film THE ROOFTOP will be released this summer. Jay planned 6 years for this new film. Currently busy with his concert tour, he returned to Taiwan to promote the film. Aside from lead actress Li Xinai, Kenny Been Chung Chun To also appeared. Jay revealed when he first saw Li Xinai, he felt that she was very right for the film's female lead image. Brother B in the film played Li Xinai's father. He worked with Jay in INITIAL D (TAU MAN JI D). This time he asked Brother B again and he agreed right away. "Being able to work with Director Chow Kit Lun is a very fun thing. It felt like we completed a vacation together. We had both surprises and adventures, I truly am very happy!" * (2013/06/13) The 32 year old Nicholas Tse Ting Fung has been in show business for over 10 years and experienced marriage, parenthood, divorce and career rises and falls. He has become much more mature. He sentimentally said, "Everyone should live in the moment. Many city people think too much, first they should do what makes them happy. Actually sometimes nothing exciting is already great. When I have time I would dine with my family. If you don't think too much, you would be happier." When asked if he will wed again, he said, "If you ask me now definitely no. I am a very dull person, how can I? If I have a new female companion, everyone would know. Let love develop naturally! Can you force it?" He said that now he would only focus on work and taking care of his two sons. Ting Fung praised former wife Cecilia Cheung Pak Chi. "I am considered a strict father, Pak Chi and I are on the same side, she has taught them very well. Both sons are very polite, obedient, and wouldn't talk a lot to bother others. Pa kChi as a mother deserves a lot of credit." Ting Fung's friend Eason Chan Yik Shun revealed that they planned to make a movie together. Eason said, "Ting Fung lately has more free time, we often chat about making a movie. Maybe in the next three, five seven years! However I am not young anymore (39 next month), I can't play a character in his twenties." * (2013/06/13) The 16th Shanghai International Film Festival will open on Saturday. The opening ceremony will have almost 400 Chinese and foreign film stars and guests, including director Oliver Stone, Chow Yun Fat, Andy Lau Tak Wa, Aaron Kwok Fu Sing, Donnie Yen Chi Tan, Jay Chou (Chow Kit Lun), Lin Chiling, Huang Xiaoming, Jo In-Sung and Kim Ha-Neul. The committee at the opening ceremony will present Chinese Film Outstanding Contribution Award to Tsui Hark and a Film Lifetime Achievement Award to Oliver Stone. The Shanghai International Film Festival's Golden Goblet Awards have 14 nominated films, 3 of which are Chinese films. They are the Dante Lam Chiu Yin directed UNBEATABLE (GIK JIN), Sherwood Hu Xueha's AMAZING and and Barbara Wong Chun Chun's THE STOLEN YEARS. UNBEATABLE's lead actors Nick Cheung Ka Fai and Eddie Peng Yu-Yen caught attention as they will compete with Huang Xiaoming and Joseph Chang Hau Chuen for Best Actor. In the film Cheung Ka Fai played a lost fighter, earlier his muscle man transformation was already the talk of the town. Peng Yu-Yen during the shoot also had 3 months of hellish training to turn his body into 3% fat condition. * (2013/06/13) Chrissie Chau Sau Na earlier wrapped up the film production KICK ASS GIRLS (BAU 3 CHIU GIU WA) in Malaysia. The final scene was shot on a street that was filled with bars. When director Cheuk Wan Chi yelled cut, the cast and the crew excitedly brought out champagne and ganged up on the director. She was soaked through. Cheuk Wan Chi struck back and began a champagne chase on the streets like a champagne shower; some foreign drinkers joined the fray and poured champagne on Hidy Yu Hiu Tung. After her earlier robbery, Chris Tong Bingyu's condition has improved. She and Chau Sau Na pursued La Ying with two bottles of champagne each. He took off his shirt and stood still for his baptism. Chau Sau Na suggested to Cheuk Wan Chi to make a sequel BAU JUNG CHIU GIU WA (BOTTLE BREAKING ANGELS) because she was reluctant to part with the production. Tong Bingyu said that earlier she was worried that her "pig head" like injuries would affect the production progress, luckily her recovery has been better than expected. She was able to hide places that were still swollen with make up. The film company also arranged for two guards to protect her. * (2013/06/13) Andy Lau Tak Wa and Lin Chiling worked together on the film SWITCH (TIN GEI FU CHUN SAN GUI TOH), which opened yesterday. Lin Chiling in the film had 24 costumes and she liked every one of them. Her favorite was the bald priestess look, which took 5 hours. "After it was completed, no one was able to recognize me." Wa Jai also thought Lin Chiling's bald look was very special but was not natural enough. Wa Jai revealed that he and Lin Chiling had an ambiguous relationship but few ambiguous scenes. He complained that they did not have a single bed scene. Wa Jai said, "I of course would like a bed scene with Lin Chiling." Did he feel any regret? Wa Jai felt that opportunity will always present itself in the future. Someone suggested that later he could fund a film that had bed scenes with Lin Chiling in the entire film. Wa Jai said, "That's good too. We will fight from the bunk bed to the water bed, which will be very special. After RUNNING OUT OF TIME (UM JIN), it will be UM CHONG SAT GEI (HIDDEN BED KILLING INTENT)." Even Wa Jai could not help but laugh at this point. He even asked Lin Chiling if she would make it. If Lin Chiling did not he would not make it. Lin Chiling played along, "Since Wa Jai asked, how dare I not agree." Wa Jai was all ready except for investors. "As soon as I have investors it will start production right away, I believe as soon as the news hits the street, the phone will be ringing nonstop. I will be very busy." Later he asked investors not to be sneaky. Lin Chiling thought he was being serious about a series of bed scenes with her. She screamed, "I am very scared!" Wa Jai revealed that the most memorable part of SWITCH was the 40 story jump with Lin Chiling in Dubai. "I never thought about jumping, but Lin Chiling didn't know how to be scared. Before I approved she already said that she wanted to try it." Lin Chiling said, "I am Gutsy Lin, I like to take risks." Wa Jai revealed that the daring Lin Chiling did not know how to jump. "I told her, just jump. When I let go, you let go; she asked me when so I could only push her off." Lin Chiling said, "I was scared to death, I thought guys would hold girls' hands. I didn't expect him to push me off. So this is the only time, I won't jump again." * (2013/06/13) Vicki Zhao Wei's directing debut SO YOUNG made 700 million yuan RMB in the Mainland. She said that she was very calm now. Instead when the film opened with over 40 million yuan she was very excited. This hit would not bring pressure to her next film. "The box office was not my target of success because it was beyond my control. I just wanted to make more entertaining and better movies." She said that she was a mad director. On the first day she shot for over 30 hours without getting tired. Finally the director of photography caught a fever and could not stand up, she immediately told him to stop working and get an I-V. Rumored to be at odds with good friend Chen Kun due to Zhou Xun, Zhao Wei thought the rumor was very strange. "Some viewers guessed that I would use him to promote the film. I just hope that he wouldn't misunderstand. I feel that I don't need to explain too much." She also was accused of being at odds with Zhou Xun. Zhao Wei was also afraid that she crossed Zhou Xun without knowing it, so she directly asked Zhou Xun. "Zhou Xun didn't feel we had anything bad either!" [ BLAH OF THE WEEK ] Columns, Reviews, Interviews 1. MING PAO DAILY, JUNE 16 2013, FILM WORDS SO YOUNG IS RICH This week has many new films, but the foreign film NOW YOU SEE ME has a sole victory at the box office as it leaves other Asian and Australian hit competitions far behind. SO YOUNG HAS LAUGHTER RAND TEARS Another entertaining new film is SO YOUNG. This is female star Vicki Zhao Wei's Beijing Film Academy Directing Department's graduation work. Its Mainland box office exceeded 700 million yuan RMB, which may be the world's highest grossing graduation film. Yet its Hong Kong opening gets a cold shoulder. Actually this university student romance has laughter and tears, even richer and more colorful than the Taiwan high school student romantic comedy hit in Hong Kong YOU ARE THE APPLE OF MY EYE. SO YOUNG is based on a Xin Yiwu novel. Li Qiang is the screen writer. It is about the friendships of several 1990's female Beijing university students. Lead Yang Zishan is energetic and fun. She takes the initiative and pursues the handsome and hard working male student Mark Chao (Chiu Yau Ting), the process of which is full of romantic comedy feel but also touches on the pains of reality. In some places it is the equivalent of AMERICAN DREAMS IN CHINA's female student version. Over a decade later the Mainland becomes modern and extravagant, how would the former students and couple turn out? The changes are enormous with a mix of comedy and tragedy. Zhao Wei only directs and does not star, her directing ability is well honed and confident. She is especially good with handling women emotions. Yang Zishan's performance is the most outstanding. Other dormitory roommates also have their wn personalities. "Tomboy's" angry rebellion deserves the most pity. The Maggie Jiang (Kong Lau Ying) played Bouyei female student is beautiful and kind, but later her life is the most tragic. The comedy "genius" among the male students in the new century ends up writing biographies for clients in the graveyard, which is very ironic and even more realistic than many male students who become rich. SO YOUNG also has its flaws, the first half is rather absurd and the second half the transformation from poverty to wealth is very flashy. It even cooks up a life and death melodrama. Fortunately overall it achieves a lot of realism and emotions. Faye Wong's theme song is also good. Wonderfully the female lead even performs the Hong Kong Cantonese song RED SUN in concert, which is very lively and interesting. (Three out of five stars) SWITCH IS COMMONPLACE AND PRETENTIOUS In comparison, the Andy Lau Tak Wa, Zhang Jingchu, Lin Chiling and Tong Dawei starred big 3D national production SWITCH (TIN GEI: FU CHUN SHAN GUI TOH) is an extreme nouveau riche extravagance with science fiction special effects and international line up. It has even more beauties than a James Bond film, but the Mainland writer and director Jay Sun Jianjun makes it very commonplace and pretentious. I find it hard to tolerate. Also about a border crossing national treasure hunt, in comparison to this one Jackie Chan's CZ12 (SUP YI SUN CHIU) can be promoted to the national treasure level masterpiece! (One out of five stars) MIRACLE IN CELL NO. 7 ACHIEVES FUN Another Korean hit comedy MIRACLE IN CELL NO. 7 also does not have the attention of the Hong Kong audience. Actually this prison film breaks new ground, achieves fun as well as touching tears. In the story the mentally deficient father who is framed and sent to prison. His fellow "bad guys" actually sneak his young daughter into prison for a reunion. The good hearted warrant even turns the prison into a child care center! This idea undoubtedly is too weird, but director Lee Hwan-Kyung captures humanity and the little child star is rather cute and moving.
