MISCELLANEOUS * (2013/06/05) After winning Best Actress, Miriam Yeung Chin Wa has become much more stringent with her film choices. Although she had many offers, so far she has only agreed to Johnnie To Kei Fung and Pang Ho Cheung's new films. Earlier due to minor surgery Ah To's new film came to a halt and only resumed production recently with her and Taiwan hunk Vic Chou (Chow Yu Man). * (2013/06/05) Andy Lau Tak Wa continued to promoted the film SWITCH (TIN GEI FU CHUN SHAN GUI TOH) in the Mainland with Lin Chiling. Lin Chiling said, "Wa Jai maintains the romantic gentleman look 24 hours a day, when I see him I would become bashful." Wa Jai revealed that if the film made over 500 million RMB he might personally direct the sequel. In the film Lau Tak Wa played a romantic special agent. In comparison with Tom Cruise, he graciously said, "I am still quite honored to be compared like this. I can say, I am the 'Tom Cruise" who represents China in the entire world." Reportedly the film company revealed that the production cost over 160 million, the film at least will need more than 400 million at the box office to break even. Wa Jai said, "If the box office passes 500 million, I will personally direct the sequel." Lin Chiling in the film had 12 different looks. Was she afraid that she would be referred to as a "flower vase"? She whined, "I am afraid! So don't say that!" * (2013/06/04) Yesterday Shu Qi retweeted a "Mco" tweet. "A movie production that stars Chang Chen, Shu Qi, Ethan Juan and others, is currently recruiting support roles and needs 6 Uyghur girls who are taller than 165cm, pretty and sunny with past film production experience. The shoot will last between 4 to 10 days, with salary ranging from 2000 to 5000 RMB daily." Shu Qi immediately posted, "This is a lie, I hope no one falls for it." Then she added an angry emoticon. * (2013/06/04) Daniel Wu (Ng Yin Cho) and his wife Lisa S. yesterday announced that their daughter Raven Wu was born on May 30th and weighed 8 pounds. However the baby had jaundice symptoms, 4 days of her birth she remains in the hospital under the lamps. Ng Yin Cho's first baby was just born but he already planned to have another in half a year. He also described that the experience in the delivery room stunned him. The 38 year old Ng Yin Cho and wife Lisa S. both liked children very much. Since ending their 8 year romance in 2010 with a wedding in South Africa, they have been busy "creating a person". Lisa finally announced in December that she was carrying a girl. Yesterday morning, Daniel and Lisa both posted a photo of their baby girl's hand to announce the good news. "We are very happy to announce that the birth of our healthy daughter Raven Wu. She has brought us an even more perfect family. Now we are very excited about starting a new journey in life!" Daniel yesterday afternoon attended the film OVERHEARD 3 (SIT TING FUNG WON 3)'s production start ceremony with Louis Koo Tin Lok, Sean Lau Ching Wan, Alex Fong Chung Shun, Huang Yi, Michelle Ye (Yip Suen), directors Alan Mak Siu Fai and Felix Chong Man Keung, and producer Derek Yee Tung Sing. Daniel was all smiles, during the interview he received his co-stars Goo Jai and Ching Wan's congratulations. He could not wait to share his joy. "Rave was born on May 30th. I went to the delivery room with Lisa and was very pleasantly surprised. At first I thought a c-section birth would take a long time, but actually the process was very fast. I wasn't ready yet. We went in around 2:30PM and came around around 2:50PM." Speaking of the birthing process needing only 20 minutes, Goo Jai joked, "You still have enough time to watch a movie!" Daniel explained that the baby was breech and could not turn around, so a natural birth was impossible. Thus a c-section was necessary. He said, "When I cut the umbilical cord I took a glimpse, it was pretty violent. I saw the person I loved being 'butchered', I was pretty scared and stunned. However I couldn't show that I was very scared. Old Lady asked me 'What's happening?', I said, 'Not much'; before I could react I went with the doctor to give the baby a physical examination and did a lot. I thought I would cry, but actually it was like a war zone." Raven weighed 8 pounds when she was born. Daniel described her as "big". Lisa said that their daughter looked like a 3 month old. As for who the daughter resembled, he said, "Her mouth pouts like mine and her nose is very straight, but I can't tell whether she looks like Papa or Mama. Because she is just born she still retains water, her eyelids are still double but she looks Chinese. She also has a lot of hair." He said that her daughter is being breast fed, but after birth she was jaundice and she is still under the lights at the hospital. Lisa is keeping her company. Even though everyone wanted to see what Raven looks like, they would have to patiently wait a few more days before the photos will be shared. Goo Jai joked, "I am under the lamp too for a tan, I can give her a tanning lamp." Ching Wan added, "Then I am giving a baby bed, so she can lie down under the lamp." Daniel would like Goo Jai and Ching Wan to be uncles to protect her daughter. He said, "I am very worried about my daughter dating in her teens, then I have to find her uncles to keep an eye on her." Goo Jai joked, "Then you should name her 'Ng Chun Siu' (No Smiling) or 'Ng Chun Kau' (No Wooing)." Daniel pointed out that his daughter' Chinese name will be left for his father to name. His parents will not visit until September. When will he have another? Daniel said, "Lisa had a very hard time, now she still can't. After half a year! I plan to reward her with jewelry, then set up an education fund for my daughter." Daniel said that most of his characters had to die before, and joked that after the birth of his daughter he did not want to die. Directors Mak Siu Fai and Chong Man Keung pointed out that the film's story was still being developed, so there might be a chance to turn it around. However they believed that OVERHEARD 3 will be the final chapter, as they no longer wanted to make a sequel like a television series. If a boss will be willing to invest in a 4th installment, it will depend on the 3rd film's box office. Goo Jai this time will play a handicapped character. He joked that the character was very right for him because he too was handicapped. He mentioned that earlier while working on the film THE WHITE STORM (SO DUK) he injured his face and right leg during a fight scene. He was swollen, in pain and thought he was jinxed, luckily he was fine. Ching Wan will try to grow facial hair for the film and did not know whether his kisses will be prickly for his wife. He joked that he had to go home and ask his wife. * (2013/06/04) Rumored couple Jacqueline Chong Si Man and director Patrick Kong (Yip Lim Sum) along with Shiga Lin Si Nga, Jinny Ng Yeuk Hei two nights ago attended their film THE BEST PLAN IS NO PLAN (KAU NUI BUT LEI 3 HING DAI)'s wrap banquet. Lead actress Chong Si Man wore 6 inch high heels and a sexy short dress, but she said that running in 6 inch high heels in the film was not fun at all. She even suffered from knee pain afterward, but it was nothing major. She did not complain to the director. Chong Si Man said that the team had a very pleasant experience at work. She was reluctant for it to come to an end. Was she the most reluctant to part with the director? She said, "The director and I are good friends, we can meet for dinner at any time. However with the film wrapped up, our rumor comes to an end. I look forward to the next rumor, I look forward to the real deal to appear even more." Lin Si Nga revealed that the director added a kiss scene with Sammy Sum Chun Hin in the last minute. She performed it without any preparation and felt embarrassed. She said, "At the time I felt nothing. It was so sudden, I just wanted to make the scene good." Ng Yeuk Hei said that after her nose job she looked like Kay Tse On Kay. She stressed that she did not have plastic surgery and joked, "If I did I would have made my face thinner and deepen my double eyelids. If I had plastic surgery and my nose was still this flat, it failed. I look like Tse On Kay because I know how to pout and smile like her." * (2013/06/04) Andy Lau Tak Wa's daughter Lau Heung Wai just celebrated her first birthday. Recently his wife Chu Lai Sin was rumored to be pregnant again as she hoped to have a son for him. Wa Jai two days ago attended her film SWITCH (TIN GEI FU CHUN SHAN GUI TOH)'s global premiere in Beijing and declined to respond to hypothetical questions. Wa Jai originally would answer all questions at the press conference, but he always protected his family privacy. When asked about rumors about his wife's second pregnancy, he immediately got serious and said, "Didn't I say everything online are rumors? If I have to clarify hypothetical questions as soon as they appear, it would be impossible. So I might as well not respond." Wa Jai, Lin Chiling and Zhang Jingchu talked about the production during the press conference. In the film his special agent was a ladies' man who was stuck between his wife Zhang Jingchu and mysterious beauty Lin Chiling. He also had a lot of fight scenes. Wa Jai has always given people a good man image, but he joked, "This is a true nature performance!" He continued, "Fight scenes with provocative beauties are very distracting, I would lose concentration. Fights with men are very natural." Wa Jai hoped SWITCH would make over 400 million yuan RMB at the box office as the director predicted. According to calculation, 400 million would break even. "If (the film) doesn't break even, I am afraid that my salary will be reduced." Wa Jai has always had a dream to direct. He has written several scripts. "In recent years I have written a script about fire fighters, but recently two movies about fire fighters are slated for release. They wrote faster than I did." Wa Jai is still writing a script about the police. Originally in September he will have to hand it to the boss, but he felt the story was wrong. Now he is rewriting it. * (2013/06/04) In the film F.I.P lead actress Fan Bingbing faces 3 hunks, Korean mixed heritage hunk Daniel Henney, Aarif Rahman (Lee Chi Ting) and Mainland star Jiang Jingfu. Fan Bingbing played an ad company director. After a birthday party she had funny but sexy experiences with three men. They showed off their chest to win Fan Bingbing's heart. Lee Chi Ting's eyes are electric and he is even topless. Daniel is as tender as a lamb, his puzzling express catches his co-star off guard. * (2013/06/04) Sammi Cheng Sau man earlier competed for the Hong Kong Film Award Best Actress but lost to Miriam Yeung Chin Wa. She again was nominated for the Chinese Film Media Award Best Actress, which touched her and was gratifying for her. However she did not forget to joke that she has lost all 7 previous nominations. Sammi happily posted online, "After learning that I was nominated for Best Actress again with ROMANCING IN THIN AIR (GO HOI BUT JI LUEN II), mi's first Chinese Film Media Award nomination, I am unusually touched. This is the 8th nomination of my life (lost all 7 times). This performance quietly caught attention and was recognized for the nomination, I am very grateful! Her competition included Kwai Lun-Mei, Sandrine Pinna (Cheung Yung Yung), Yan Bingyan, and Hao Lei. * (2013/06/04) Ethan Juan (Yuen King Tin) posed for a men's fashion magazine in Italy. He kept shooting photos with his phone. After serving a year of military service, this year he wanted to see the light in the North Pole, snowboard and go someplace where no one know them with people he loves. Yuen King Tin was said to be born for show business. He said, "Instead of calling me handsome, you might as well call me odd!" Speaking of his past production experience, when he worked on GREEN FOREST MY HOME the director yelled at him. "The director said that I knew how to date but not how to make movies. If I didn't perform well soon he would hit me." Yuen King Tin with MONGA won the Golden Horse Best Actor, but in Hou Hsiao-Hsien's THE ASSASSIN he only played a minor role. Tsui Tin Yau will perform in Tao Kit's directing debut and work on his first bed scene and was nervous. He joked, "Tao Kit asked how much can I take off, I said that it would depend on the script. I will also prepare my girlfriend for that." * (2013/06/03) Sammi Cheng Sau Man yesterday posted a still from her film BLIND DETECTIVE (MAN TAM). She was on the run. In order to fulfill Fei Jeh's wish, Yun Yi picked up her only lesson of piano from age 6 and performance EMBRACE LOVE (YUNG PO OI). She also performed the new song that she wrote for her late mother LAUGHTER POWER (SIU NUNG LEUNG) and finally she performed a duet MAMA IS WELL (MAMA HO) with Fei Jeh. Yun Yi held back her tears on multiple occasions. "The road of life is very long. Although Mommy couldn't keep going with me, but all I had to do is look back and I would see her cheering for me! Thank you Mommy for always loving me and protecting me, giving all your love to me. You were afraid that I would be lonely, and would secretly cry because I would miss you. Please relax! Although sometimes I would cry, I am not lonely because you are always in my heart. I Love you!" Yun Yi thanked her elders who returned from Canada, her OFF PEDDER (BUT DA JI GEI YUN) colleagues, TVB executive Tsang Lai Chung, Chan Suk Fun and her son. She only did not mention her father Adam Cheng Siu Chau. At the end, Yun Yi and the stars performed TRULY LOVE YOU (JUNG DIK OI NEI) and finally she broke off. Even Eric Tsang Chi Wai was teary eyed. Performing artists shared their experience with Fei Jeh. Liza Wang Ming Chuen remembered that several decades ago she grew up with Fei Jeh. Although their personalities and interests were different, she always thought of her as a big sister. Jacky Cheung Hok Yau said, "Fei Jeh back then praised me for singing pretty well, and said that I definitely will be famous. Luckily she was right!" After the show, Yun Yi admitted that she had a very hard time with holding back her tears. She forced herself to complete her solo performance before crying, but she denied that she would not be able to finish. "Mommy should accept that, I hope she enjoyed the show and that she would relax. I am a big girl and will take care of myself." Two nights ago at 2:30AM, Yun Yi posted several concert photos and a message, "Ma, did you see it?" Chi Wai revealed that many friends shed tears back stage because they missed Fei Jeh so much. Speaking of performing Fei Jeh's egg walk again, Chi Wai said, "Breaking the eggs wasn't a problem because all I wanted to do was to relive Fei Jeh's experience. The concert proceed will be donated to Caring For Children Foundation. I don't know how much the donation will be, the figure isn't important. Yet when she spoke she still was full of energy and said that she would not easily give up her performance career. Ah Lek has always boasted about himself, but with Fei Jeh he would only admit to be in second place because Fei Jeh was also first. Chi Wai remembered when he was misbehaving Fei Jeh smacked him in the head and yelled at him. Only because Fei Jeh was next to him he was able to be a big kid. She was everyone's parent. Yeung Chin Wa thanked Fei Jeh for her blessing back then. She performed the Fei Jeh fan adaptation of her song YEUNG CHIN WA, SHUM DIN HA. The lyrics was about Fei Jeh's inner world and happy personality. Cheung Hok Yau two nights two nights ago performed many songs, aside from FEI JEH he also performed LIGHTLY TOUCH YOUR FACE because Fei Jeh liked the song. Tsang Chi Wai pointed out that Fei Jeh's dream was for Joyce Cheng Yun Yi to inhert her talent, art and professionalism. Over the years everyone has seen Yun Yi's hard work and improvement, so Fei Jeh definitely would not be disappointed. He said to Fei Jeh, "Relax, Yun Yi will be able to spread your spirit and use this stage as proof." Yun Yi sat on Fei Jeh's trademark giant glasses and appeared in mid air. She said that when her mother passed away in 2008 she could not accept the fact, and she thanked those around her when encouraged and helped her at the time. She also remembered that her mother said whether at age 8, 18 to 80 she still had to accept challenges. Last night Yun Yi performed in the finale and was responsible for 20 minutes of the performance. She also shared details of her life with Mommy. Yesterday afternoon when she attended the worship ceremony she said that she was the most afraid of talking, during rehearsal she broke down twice. As for her father Adam Cheng Siu Chau, Yun Yi said that he was not in Hong Kong. Thus she would tape the program for him. Chau Guoon even asked her if she needed any help and her family took turn to cheer her on. She also said that socket nose, Dumbo ears and buck teeth were trademark Cheng Yun Yi! * (2013/06/02) The Vicki Zhao Wei directing debut SO YOUNG made 700 million yuan RMB in the Mainland and will open in Hong Kong on June 13. Two nights ago its Hong Kong premiere was held. Aside from Zhao Wei, producer Stanley Kwan Kam Peng, Mark Chao (Chiu Yau Ting) and Han Geng, Kenny Bee (Chung Chun To), Leo Ku Kui Ke and Hacken Lee Hak Kun also showed their support. Zhao Wei admitted that she thought that SO YOUNG would perform well at the box office but she never imagined as much as 700 million RMB. For her directing debut it is an encouragement. She did not dare to hope for the film to perform that well in Hong Kong. She only hoped to show how Mainlanders live and how their youth was spent to Hong Kong viewers. She for now has no intention to make a sequel or direct again, because she also liked her acting job very much and never thought about quitting. Later she will star in the Kwan Kam Peng directed FONG LONG GEI. The film originally was slated for production in 2012. Ah Kwan said that because Zhao Wei had to make her graduation work SO he could only make way. When asked fi the lead actor will be Chen Kun, Zhao Wei said that since she will not direct the film she asked everyone to ask Ah Kwan. Zhao Wei most recently got some weight, will she lose it before returning to acting? She covered her face with hair and said with some embarrassment, "Don't say that." Ah Kwan said that he wanted a script first before deciding a lead actor and estimated that the production will not begin until the end of the year. He also praised first time director Zhao Wei for her ability to understand quickly, her high intelligence and emotional quotients, which made her very suitable to be a director. Yet Zhao Wei had no plan to direct again for now because she still has not reached her goal as an actress. "Fame isn't my goal, and I have won awards. I want to play once a character that is explosive and leaves no regret. So far I have yet run into a character like this, so I never thought about quitting." Lee Hak Kun's RED SUN was a song in the film. Hacken said, "Zhao Wei called me and wanted to use my song in the movie, but its copyright ran into a little problem and she asked me for help. I never would have guessed that a song with 20 year old history would still catch someone's eyes. Due to the film being a Mainland hit, now when I attend Mainland events and perform I am asked to sing RED SUN." Zhao Wei saw her ROMANCE IN THE RAIN co-star Ku Kui Ke and was so happily that she hug him; Gei Jai said that he has not seen Zhao Wei in a long time but they stayed in touch online. * (2013/06/01) The 66th Cannes Film Festival has already closed. Two nights ago they reunited and posed for photos with Fat Soh. With younger version of themselves Huang Xiaoming and Michelle Chen also on hand, Fat Gor said that it was a rare sighting of "Two Chow Yun Fat, Two Chung Chor Hung". Although Hung Goo humbly said that Michelle Chen was young and pretty unlike her, Fat Gor joked, "Tonight there are two Chow Yun Fat and two Chung Chor Hung because Xiaoming and Michelle are here too, they look like us!" Hung Goo said that in the morning she just ran into Fat Gor at the gym and praised Fat Gor for being fit and handsome. Was she tempted to work with Fat Gor again? She said, "Yes! If Fat Gor asks, I won't reject. (LOVE IN THE BUFF sequel?) I am not playing Jimmy or Cherie, I don't mind playing Fat Gor's wife or girlfriend." Fat Gor arrived with Fat Soh and looked for God of Gamblers, but he jokingly denied that he was playing Ko Chun. "My hair is combed to the left, God of Gamblers' hair is all combed to the back." He said that Hung Goo was getting prettier and prettier. Hung Goo recently has been caught with guys on the street. Fat Gor said in Putonghua, "Encouragement! Encouragement!" He told Hung Goo to meet more guys. As for Hung Goo being willing to work with him again, Fat Gor said, "I have to have a script first. Hung Goo can't be (Shawn) Yue Man Lok's Ma, it's more like Yue Man Lok should play her old man." Will he compete with Yue Man Lok for Miriam Yeung Chin Wa? He said, "Then what will Chung Chor Hung do? With a four way romance, Director Pang (Ho Cheung) will have to think about it." What about AN AUTUMN'S TALE sequel? Fat Gor said, "Would anyone want to see it? I am setting up shot in Cheung Chau, not Long Island. Yet TVB series is shooting in Cheung Chau. I will change it to shoot on Lamma Island." Television fan Fat Gor also watched BEAUTY AT WAR (GUM JI YUK YIP YI). He said, "I don't understand it, so I have someone to explain it ot me. Actually the series is good, but it requires patience to watch. The general viewer has difficulties with the palace inside and out." Turning 30 yesterday Michelle Chen said that Hung Goo was her idol. "She is the goddess of my heart. The first time I met her I was very nervous. I definitely will get a picture with her, it's my biggest birthday wish." Michelle Chen finally got her wish and even posted her photo with Hung Goo online. She said that she was under Hung Goo's spell. She also celebrated her birthday with co-workers and Mickey Mouse. * (2013/06/01) Andy Lau Tak Wa and Sammi Cheng Sau Man earlier worked on the film BLIND DETECTIVE (MAN TAM)'s poster. He revealed that he secretly used Johnnie To Kei Fung's personality as a blue print for his character. He imagined that even with sight he would still be a strict director who yelled at people on the set. "Every time I play a difficult character I would find someone to study. Even To Kei Fung and Sammi don't know this secret. For every scene I asked To Kei Fung to rehearse with me, sometimes I even wanted him to say the lines ones to study his attitude and tone." Sammi looked surprised when she heard. Sammi appreciated having a solid script, which made her performance easy. She said, " I perform with instinct, the most important is the co-star and the script. This film's script is very solid, a great platform for me to perform at ease with full force. I can give myself completely to To Sir. He wants me to be exaggerated, perform wildly, crazy but not out of control, even stronger than my past films so the scenes are more powerful and funnier!" In addition Wa Jai's romantic scenes were not with Sammi but with Mainland actress Gao Yuanyuan. In the film Wa Jai and Gao Yuanyuan danced ballroom dances, but Wa Jai admitted during the shoot Yuanyuan stepped on his toes until they were swollen. However he did not blame Yuanyuan. "Perhaps I wasn't leading too well, from the beginning we can't quite grasp the rhythm and the speed so I kept getting stepped on." Lau Tak Wa and Sammi changed into many different looks. Sammi held a gun and looked like a very cool cop. * (2013/06/01) Charlene Choi Cheuk Yin appeared on a TVB Entertainment News Station program interview. In 2007 with the film DIARY (MONG SEUNG) she won the Puchon International Fantastic Film Festival Best Actress. "Now the Hong Kong Film Award for Best Actress is my goal. Even if I am 60 when I win it's not too late." Speaking of her Twins partner Gillian Chung Yun Tung, Ah Sa said that they had a lot of chemistry. When they had a difference of opinion at most they would be in a cold war. "I remember when something happened to Ah Gil, the company told me to release a solo record. I was 100,00 times unwilling, but Ah Gil comforted me. She said that although we were a group, I shouldn't stop." * (2013/05/31) Andy Lau Tak Wa and Sammi Cheng Sau man make a perfect film couple. This year they unite for the Johnnie To Kei Fung directed film BLIND DETECTIVE (MAN TAM). Earlier they accepted an interview with the Apple Daily Friday fashion and beauty supplement magazine add and spoke about their 13 year long friendship. Sammi described their friendship as totally natural. "We clicked as soon as we got together. The natural level of the chemistry is as soon as we take our places we rehearse the scene, the type of interaction during the shoot. It seems very inborn, we trust each other. After years of working together, I cherish the very valuable friendship very much. Such a compatible partner at work is valuable." Wa Jai said that Sammi was very close in terms of personality and making friends. "We are people who put friends first but very rarely disturb friends' lives. We are just about as demanding as the other so we became friends." As for their biggest changes, Sammi said that Wa Jai was wilder. "He is wilder and wilder, especially during the shoot. Wa Jai is more and more 'open'. When someone is open, everyone open up to him. When you find a good co-star, you would mutually stimulate and set each other off. It's like you click, you don't hold back at all. The performance is natural." Wa Jai joked that they both got thinner. "Character performance would be different according to experience. Her calmness of life and demands for her character come from the heart. This time I would even ask more of her, force her so she would bring more. In both action and performance I would give her more pressure than before, and we would have new sparks." In addition, Sammi most recently was nominated for Best Actress with ROMANCING IN THIN AIR (GO HOI BUT JI LUEN II) at the 13th Chinese Film Media Award against Taiwan's Kwai Lun-Mei, Sandrine Pinna (Cheung Yung Yung), Mainland's Yan Bingyan and Hao Lei. The Best Actor competition includes COLD WAR (HONG JIN)'s Tony Leung Ka Fai, NIGHTFALL (DAI JUI BO)'s Nick Cheung Ka Fai and Mainland actors Zhang Fengyi, Huang Bo and Chen Jianbin. * (2013/05/31) Charlie Yeung Choi Nei and Tsui Hark in 1994 worked together on the film THE LOVERS (LEUNG JOOK). Since then they remained friends. Earlier when Charlie directed CHRISTMAS ROSE (SING DAN MUI GWAI), Tsui Hark who always gave suggestions to the film at the film company's invitation became the film's producer with another famous filmmmaker Jacob Cheung Chi Leung. Tsui Hark said that he worried a little about producing this time. "I was very afraid of scaring Charlie because I am very honest at work. I wouldn't show any mercy. I feel with filmmaking, courtesy is useless. The focus is getting what the director wants. Sometimes when I got less than courtesy, I would feel I was too impulsive. However my personality is like that and I can't do anything about it!" Tsui Hark even stated that when Charlie was making the movie, he never visited the set because he did not want to hinder her work. "As a director I don't want producers to come to the set. They can come to play and have no problem, but if they come to watch how I shoot I would feel very bothered. So I never went to the set, I only gave my opinions before and after the shoot." Although Tsui Hark had concerns, Charlie found his directness very acceptable. "I'm OK! I know he does that for the movie, he would only speak up for your own good. I would rather he says something when something happens, which is better than saying he has regrets afterward!" Their relationship improved further due to the collaboration as they understood each other even more. Charlie joked that from when they first worked together on THE LOVERS, Tsui Hark already felt like a father to him. "Maybe he gives people the impression that he is very serious, but actually he is a very humorous person. Back then when we worked together I always wanted to get closer to him. He has a fatherly feeling that is still unshakable now." * (2013/05/31) The Peter Chan Ho Sun produced and directed film AMERICAN DREAMS IN CHINA after a few weeks in Mainland released is already near 400 million at the box office. Two nights ago he held a special screening for friends in Hong Kong and invited five Best Actors and a Best Actress Leon Lai Ming, Tony Leung Ka Fai, Nick Cheung Ka Fai, Aaron Kwok Fu Sing, Eric Tsang Chi Wai and Anita Yuen Wing Yi, as well as Chingmy Yau Suk Ching, Jacky Cheung Hok Yau, Fala Chen, Shawn Yue Man Lok, Kenny Bee (Chung Chun To), Choi Yat Chi, Media Asia boss Peter Lam Kin Ngok and former Golden Harvest boss Raymond Chow Man Wai and his wife. During a group photo, Yue Man Lok wisely gave up the center spot to boss Lam Kin Nogk, but Lam Kin Ngok was inevitably standing next to Len Len who was linked to him in rumors in the past. Before Len Len dated Julian Cheung Chi Lam she was rumored to have had a chubby boyfriend. However their rumor was such a long time ago, even when they ran into each other they were not embarrassed. They even nodded in greeting; coincidentally Cheung Chi Lam did not join the group photo but showed up later. The divorced Lai Ming whose former wife Gaile Lok was rumored to wed a waterskiing instructor still came in support. Although he was late and missed the group photo, before going in he said, "Peter and I are good friends, so I have to come and support him. I am still waiting for a chance to work with Peter again." Lai Ming was not the only one who wanted to work with Peter. Fellow Four Great Heavenly King Kwok Fu Sing due to numerous offers revealed that he turned down Peter's scripts twice. However he looked forward to working with him on the third time. Sing Sing said, "Peter approached me twice to work together, I was very happy but we just passed each other by. Next year I still have time, I am waiting for him to approach me." Sing Sing was very happy about his horse's victory and even boasted, "It's all thanks to my eye for horses. I am very happy to get a victory for the horse fans." Reportedly Christine Kuo was good luck for him. Sing Sing said, "This is just some nonsense news, made up story, just for laughs!" As for rumors that he wanted to buy Christine Kuo a home, Sing Sing only said, "One word: Stupid!" Then he went inside. Cheung Ka Fai actually just dined with Chi Wai, Len Len and Yau Suk Ching. He said that lately every 2 or 3 months he would meet with this group of friends in the business, he had a lot of joy, sense of security and played freely. He joked that he was very happy to run into his similar looking "brother" Cheung Hok Yau. For UNBEATABLE (GIK JIN) Ka Fai won praises for his shape that he trained into. He joked that the magazine cover was like a photo book release, but his wife Esther Kwan Wing Ho's response was lukewarm. Ka Fai joked, "Old Lady didn't react much. One day I was asleep, she slapped me awake and said that my muscles were exploding. Actually no matter how I am, she always says she loves me very much." Ka Fai joked that in the past he was not anxious about going out, after the training he wanted to patrol the beach and attract women's attention. However he did not want men to apply lotion for him, as he only liked women. Recently a director suggested for him to play a fat guy, but he was busy with movies and thought that reaching the required weight would be very tough. * (2013/05/31) Chrissie Chau Sau Na recently was linked in rumors with married producer Wong Wing Fung while working on the film KICK ASS GIRLS (BAU 3 CHIU GIU WA). Earlier they were caught shopping in a supermarket to celebrate Wong Wing Fung's birthday. Two nights ago she posted 9 photos with Wong Wing Fung. She wrote, "Happy Birthday Producer Wong Wing Fung, I wish all your wishes come true, every movie will have good word of mouth and be big box office hits, for you to continue to chase your dreams, and good health, peace and joy!" * (2013/05/31) THE GRANDMASTERS (YUT DOI JUNG SI) held its premiere in Tokyo last night. The Cannes award winning film LIKE FATHER LIKE SON's Japanese star Yoko Maki presented flowers to director Wong Kar Wai and Tony Leung Chiu Wai, then said that she wanted to learn kung fu from the latter. Wai Jai even flew all over the place to sign autographs for fans and said that it was his honor for Japanese film viewers to enjoy THE GRANDMASTERS. * (2013/05/30) This year is the Taiwan Golden Horse Award's 50th anniversary. For such a meaningful moment, the event plans to invite 112 past Best Actor, Best Actress and Best Director to attend. Getting the most attention of course are the 70s top film stars "Double Chin Double Lin" Chin Han, Charlie Chin (Chun Cheung Lam), Brigitte Lin (Lam Ching Ha) and Joan Lin (Lam Fung Giu). Aside from Chin Han who is still working in show business, the other three have already retired from film. The Golden Horse executive committee said that they have already received their invitations and gave their initial acceptance. * (2013/05/30) The 57 year old famous martial art star Gordon Liu (Lau Ka Fai) suffered a stroke in August 2011 and hemiplegia on the left side of his body. Since then a financial dispute erupted between Lau and his family and assistant. Originally named Sin Kam Hei, Lau Ka Fai earlier filed suit with the High Court against former assistant Eva Fung for over HK$2 million in saving. The suit stated that Lau Ka Fai has requested for the court to confirm that defendant Eva Fung had Lau's two accounts only in her trust, including a 1.39 million yuan RMB Bank of China Hong Kong account and a US$ 580,000 HSBC account. The plaintiff also requested the defendant to turn over all related account saving and the account's records like past transactions. The suit also stated that if the court declined to order the defendant to directly turn over the saving to Lau Ka Fai, it may order the defendant to turn over the related saving to the court so the court may issue living expense to him in the future for Lau's residence, medical and other needs. Yesterday reporters contacted Lau Ka Fai's guardian Fan Yik Man, who stated that originally she did not want the matter to end up in court since everyone knew each other and lawyers cost money. She only wanted to regain Brother Ka Fai's finances for his future medical expenses. In as early as January she already asked Eva for the two savings accounts but to no avail. She could only follow the legal process. Fan Yik Man said that Brother Ka Fai already knew about the matter being in the court system. Now his health condition has progressed decently, as he has already been transferred to a nursing home with 24 hour care. Early this year he suffered a fall and had an operation and earlier he went for a follow up visit. The doctor praised him for gaining 2 to 3 kilograms. His appetite has been great and he loved chocolate. He also wanted to go out. If he could be more stable in his wheelchair, she has promised to take him outside. * (2013/05/30) Andy Lau Tak Wa's 2008 film promotional poster appeared on a certain Jiangsu lumber company's product package and online. Lau Tak Wa felt that his name and image rights were violated and filed suit against the company. The cast yesterday was heard in the Wujing district of Changzhou. Lau Tak Wa's represented stated that Lau Tak Wa's image had enormous commercial value. The lumber company without authorization used his image to promote its wooden file, wallpaper and other products. They requested for the court to issue an order to stop the defendant from copyright infringement behavior and to recall the product involved from national retailers, to stop using Lau Tak Wa's image, to issue a public apology and to compensate 500,000 yuan RMB. The defendant stated that it did not violate Lau Tak Wa's image and signature rights with malice, as it stated a contract to authorize their uses with a Beijing advertising company. The judge stated whether the contract granted permission or not, the defendant has exceeded its limits of its rights to use Lau Tak Wa's image and committed copyright violation. After the court investigation ended, both parties stated that they were willing to accept mediation. Wa Jai in SWITCH (TIN GEI FU CHUN SHAN GUI TOH) had a passionate bed scene with Zhang Jingchu. In recent years he has rarely worked on any intimate scenes, but after wedding his standards grew more lenient. Many are looking forward to his intimate performance with Zhang Jingchu. [ BLAH OF THE WEEK ] Columns, Reviews, Interviews 1. APPLE DAILY, JUNE 6 2013, BIG PLANNING CINEMAS PAST Chinachem Cinema closed. It has witnessed many quiet nights and distressed hearts, heard and seen them. The story ultimately had to come to an end. As STAGE-FANS' SWEETHEART (HEI MAI CHING YUN) closed its curtains, perhaps these traditional old style cinemas also had to be swallowed up in the flood of time. In their place are mosquito sized mini cinemas or large commercial buildings, as the taste of money overpowers the flavor of humanity. Now we can only through these old cinema photos enter that world in film, gradually picking up the beautiful memories of "slacking off" at business shows, eating smoked squid and chewing sugar canes. Every time when our eyes ar closed, we often can dream like a movie...... - FUNG KWOK HONG Hong Kong Cinemas Lee Theatre (1927-1991) Address: 99 Percival Street, Causeway Bay Current Status: Lee Theatre Plaza Search Terms: Cantonese Opera, Miss Hong Kong The Lee Theatre was location in Lee Garden, sharing half of Happy valley's moonlight. Back then Lee Hysan turned some of the land in Lee Garden into a theater so his mother could watch Cantonese Opera conveniently. On its opening day big star Hu Die cut its ribbon. The Lee Theatre was at the time the most luxurious Cantonese Opera performance venue. With its domed ceiling, large stage, couplet on both sides, spacious lobby, it was the heavenly merge between the East and the West as well as the hot spot for the upper crust. In the 70s TVB held the Miss Hong Kong pageant here, as the rich, the beautiful, the right time and the pretty scenery were the present. In the 90s, Causeway Bay rent took off, the Lee Theatre after TERMINATOR 2 JUDGEMENT DAY retired. Although like Arnold said, "I will be back", the "new" Lee Theatre has already become a mini cinema. Like Arnold it was not what it once was. In 2005 it sadly closed its curtain. State Theatre (1959-1997) Address: 277-291 King's Road, North Point Current Status: Denon Club Search Terms: Olympia, gated elevator, oil painted billboard Taking the tram on King's Road, State Theatre, Olympia Theatre always gave people the impression that they belonged to the same circuit. Yet they were not connected at all. State Theatre was a stately theater that specialized in screening foreign films. As Tao Kit says, before the 7:30PM show you would have a steak with your girlfriend in the nearby Windsor Restaurant and you seemingly made an international connection. The design here resembled Western theaters, viewers needed to take a gated elevator to the dress circle like special class. Of course it did not have a dress code, if you could pay you could sit. In addition, State's oil painted advertising (12 feet by 30 feet) was rather eye catching. When you took the tram you would definitely see it. Back then oild painting artists were rather popular, unfortunately now computers have taken their place. North Point used to be known as "Little Shanghai". The State Theatre building was a multipurpose community center, with residential, commercial and entertainment properties. Today the theater is no long there, but this specialty remains. Queen's Theatre (1961-2007) Address: 31 Queen's Road, Central Current Status: Commercial property Search Terms: Theatre Row, King's Theatre As time progressed, few things remained with the Queen's label. Queen's Theatre, which stood at Central, already was quite regal with its English name. It opened with the William Holden and Nancy Kwan starred THE WORLD OF SUZIE WONG. Thus, all foreign films must passed Queen's "inspection". Only after their first run then they were "authorized" to open in other cinemas. In 1964, it compared with King's Theatre one block over and provided suit guys and hot office ladies more choices. In 1990, King's "passed away", leaving Queen's alone in the Theatre Row to battle against high rent and the tides of times. Finally on National Day 2007 it completed its historic mission, with LUST CAUTION (SIK GAI)'s Mr. Yee sorrowfully closing its curtain. Isis Theatre (1966-1999) Address: 7-14 Moreton Terrace, Causeway Bay Current Status: EFCC Tung Fook Church Search Terms: Park Theatre, King of Theatres Hidden in the golden streets of Causeway Bay, it interfered with an overpass. Opened in 1966 and closed quietly in 1999, Isis Theatre did not take with it any glory. Yet when it opened its advertising was quite an exaggeration -- with 36 sets of four character adjectives, 144 words to describe the theatre features, the ad even boasted to be the "King of Theatres". Its best of the best attitude did not match the theater itself at all. In the 90s, TRICKY BRAINS (JING GOO JUEN GA)'s Ching Lok Yi characterized it as a place of ill repute where the lewd Chi Man Kit and Chi Man Jing frequented. The Queen's College kids of the era mostly patroned the nearby Park Theatre, unless they wanted to see a category III film and did not want to be recognized by (or run into) teachers...... East Town Theatre (1964-1974) Address: 16 Fenwick Street, Wan Chai Current Staus: East Town Building Search Times: Haunted Cinemas, Ko Shing The ghost story of COMING SOON is not exclusive to Thailand. Located in Wanchai, East Town Theatre is the most famous haunted cinema. Its predecessor was International Funeral Parlor. It was in the luxury class, with a wid screen, 1,300 seats including rear row and balcony. It specialized in large scale foreign films, on the cinema outer wall were the words ELAIN NDELO, Alain Delon misspelled. Back then faceless female ghost, light borrowing ghost and the men's room ghost anecdotes were rumored, some even said that viewers went into a coma after going to the bathroom. Since then East Town became a ghost town. In 1974 it was forced to close. Looking back, that might extremely like be the strategy of nearby cinemas to reduce competition. In addition, Ko Shing cinema in Sai Ying Pun was also known for ghosts. If you want to know what kind, please google "chicken man legend". Palace Theatre (1979-1994) Address: 280 Gloucester Road, Causeway Bay Current Status: World Trade Centre Search Terms: Half Time break, SOMEWHERE IN TIME Readers who were fortunate enough to visit the Palace Theatre (or its predecessor, Maxim's Palace night club) are either wealthy or nobility. This was once the most luxurious cinema in Hong Kong, as the cinema advertised "palace of art built from tens of thousands", its latex seats were comfortably wide. It also had carpet, which kept viewers from tossing peanut shells and sugar cane chew. That was cigar guys or foreign high ranking officials' social space, as well as where the nouveau riche went to satisfy their ego. Its lobby was splendid, in particular when it played GONE WITH THE WIND and DR. ZHIVAGO it had half time breaks. Viewers wandered into the lobby, return from the fantasy to reality. In 1981, the film SOMEWHERE IN TIME ran here for 223 days. Christopher Reeves and Jane Seymour's short but memorable romance, that sweet and agreeable score still lingered in minds. Only time could not go backward, Palace Theatre after THE INNOCENT quietly closed its curtains. Kowloon Cinemas Majestic Theatre (1928-1988) Address: 348 Nathan Road, Jordan Current Status: Novotel Hong Kong Nathan Road Kowloon Search Terms: Car Race, Smoked Squid, Business Show Speaking of the Majestic Theatre, the most memorable has to be the vendors outside: smoked squid, salted roasted quail eggs, salty boiled peanuts, beef tripe, hot sugar cane, pear, fresh pineapple, roasted chestnut, spicy fish eggs, whatever you wanted you got. Under the watch of the police and the gang everyone profited, they were full of old community humanity. Secondly it like other larger cinemas had business show (5:30PM), the working class' happy hour when tickets were cheaper than normal. Later the Majestic Theatre switched to show dirty movies, its erotic ads added a lot of "color" to Nathan Road. The thugs and sugar cane gang (litterers) after the late show here refused to go home. They all raced their cars on Princess Margaret Road. A group of young strangers had an unspoken bond, this was order. Astor Theatre (1957-1987) Address: 380 Nathan Road, Jordan Current status: Hong Kong Eaton Hotel, Astor Plaza Search Terms: Sunbeam, Prince's, Bridge Plot, Scale Cantonese Opera is a national art as well as a symbol of local culture. In the 50s before movies became popular it was the people's primary entertainment. At the time Cantonese Opera mainly was performed in Hong Kong theatres like Tai Ping, Ko Shing and Lee Theatre and the Astor, Prince's in Kowloon. Whenever a major opera was performed, the theatre would distribute "bridge plot" to viewers. It gave a brief description of the story and the stills of the stars. Although the printing was simple it was quite valuable to collectors. Aside Cantonese Opera declined, these theatres also closed. Only North Point's Sunbeam Theatre remained. Speaking of Sunbeam, that scale with all the flashing lights had to be mentioned. As long as you had coins, the scale would present a fortune and hint that you should lose weight. Royal Theatre (1960-1990) Address: 750 Nathan Road, Mongkok Current Status: Constructed with Empress Theatre into Pioneer Centre Search Term: Lunar New Year Film, Empress, Eastman Color In past Lunar New Years, Lunar New Year films were a must for Hong Kongers. The Royal Theatre belonged to the Golden Princess Cinema Circuit, back then when Lunar New Year films ACES GO PLACES (JUI GAI PAK DONG) and EIGHTH HAPPINESS (BAK SING BO HEI) opened, the line of ticket buyers would coiled around Nathan Road like a snake. Sometimes people waited for several hours and still have not bought their tickets yet. When the Royal opened it advertised "the first in Hong Kong with 70mm film projector and six track sound machine" and "All Eastman color". "Eastman" was Eastman Kodak's abbreviation, in other words Kodak film was used. Back Royal was Empress, this pair of competitors battled for over 20 years in Mongkok but suffered the same fate in the end as they came together to become the Pioneer Centre now. Paris Theatre (1966-1992) Address: Ning Yuen Street, Sai Po Kong Current Status: Yue Xiu Plaza Search Terms: Second Run Films, Balcony, Cross Out Ticket A few letters different from Palace, Paris because of its San Po Kong location was destined to be looked down upon. They represented the nobility and the ordinary. The former played first run, the latter played second run films. A few letters made a world of difference. Actually, Paris had its glorious receipts. It was the largest cinema in Hong Kong, with 3,000 seats that were divided into front, middle, back, super and special. The super class was the most expensive, then the special, back, center, front. The different sections had different colored tickets. The ticket lady used a sign pen to cross out the ticket, the mark remained years after. The merciless computer tickets could not compare to that. Grand Theatre (1984-2004) Address: 60-104 Soy Street, Mongkok Current Status: Newport Cinema Search Terms: Late Show, Seat Slashing "Wait for you at the Grand!" As a Mongkok landmark, the Grand Theatre itself had a muddy MK flavor that did not match its opening advertisement "Grand and Magificent, Brilliant Sound and Sight". This place was best known for its late shows (11:30PM, 1:30AM, 3:30AM, and 5:30AM), a club for mobsters and the night owls. The late show was absolutely the indicator of how good or bad a movie was, audience reaction and seat damage level directly reflected the box office. According to legends back then when DAYS OF BEING WILD (AH FEI JING JUEN) was released, when viewers saw Tony Leung Chiu wai combing his hair in the end, the applause, the jeer, the seat slicing sounds rang along with Xavier Cugat's JUNGLE DRUMS...... Kwun Chung Theatre (1993-2011) Address: 30 Kwun Chung Street Current Status: Transformed into two store fronts Search Terms: UVD, All Day Unlimited Viewing Post 70 and Early 80s Readers would be no stranger to the UVD cinema circuit. In those days, category III films were popular as mini erotic cinemas sprung like sprout after the rain, innuendo and wordplay Chinese titles and covering nude women on posters with stars and fruits have become collective memory. Speaking of Kwun Chung, aside from slogans like "A Ticket, Watch Until You Smile" and the "Buddy, All Day Unlimited Viewing", it also had dark and narrow screening rooms where moaning could already be heard before going in. Outside vendors sold official porn videos, English, French, Germany, American, Russian, Italian, Austrian, Eight Nation Alliance was bought and sold in the open. By the end of the 90s, the dirty film market declined. With the rise of porn videos and internet, only middle aged uncles went to the theater. Reportedly the theater cleanliness was also lacking. Kwun Chung finally succumbed to high rent and closed. Hong Kong's last mini sex cinema ended after the moaning climax passed. Special: Policy Led To Decline Outside the cinema the steamy steamed corn, sugar cane and the spotlights danced, not far away smoked squid could be sensed and left the entire family lingering. Such a scene could only be at the Film Archive. With the sudden closing of Tsim Sha Tsui East's Chinachem Theatre, another place for collective memory was buried. Concession Department Helped As cinemas became connected to large shopping centers, their operation seemed to be more and more difficult. The Hong Kong Theatre Association Vice Chairman Chui Hin Wai earlier talked about cinema circuit operation. "The biggest expense for theaters is rent, which is more than half the operation cost. Many are operated with underwriting method, with the higher between base rent and 15 to 20% of the cinema box office." He said that many cinemas had to operate "side businesses" to survive. "Some cinemas are no longer making a profit, instead you would never guess where they profit from: concession. Its profit is in multiples and occupies a major part of the cinema profit." He said that cinemas in busy areas like Tsim Sha Tsui, Mongkok and Admiralty can reach over 30% in profit. With fewer and fewer cinemas, Chui Hin Wai said that it was related to government policies. Many districts like Sham Shui Po, Sheung Shui, Fanling and Tai Po have no cinema. When the people in the districts wanted to go to the movie they had to cross districts. "Film is entertainment for the general public, every district should have it like parks and amusement areas. Why do some districts' residents have to travel so far to watch a movie? Now transportation isn't cheap, when the entire family has to go out, have dinner and with 70 bucks a ticket, many lower class may not be able to afford it." He felt that the government should use policy to put a cinema in every district. Reportedly more cinemas in Tsim Sha Tsui due to rental contracts coming to term will close, then Tsim Sha Tsui might very likely turn into a place to shop but not to entertain. - HO WING NING 2. MING PAO DAILY, JUNE 2 2013, FILM WORDS Among the current crop of Hong Kong directors, Peter Chan Ho Sun is the one with particularly colorful genres. For 20 years his films include the ancient and the modern, Chinese and foreign, drama and action, tragedy and comedy, he even has made large scale musicals and small budget horror films. Even as a producer he is diverse. His movies of course have both hits and misses, but he specializes in always being able to try new subjects and styles. Often when he seems to be exhausted of talent and skill he churns out something new and some even pleasant surprises. One of Peter Chan's Best His previous film WU XIA was less than well received but actually was quite unique. Overall though it was undoubtedly less than ideal. His new film AMERICAN DREAMS IN CHINA is completely different. Before its Hong Kong release it has already become a critical and commercial hit in the Mainland, as Chan Ho Sun obviously has bounced back and returned to form. Actually, this was one of the best films in his career. I feel that it also is the film that a Hong Kong director has handled a current Mainland China subject the best in. The Mainland policy opening and changing has brought enormous changes for over 30 years, which honestly a Hong Kong director would be quite distant to. With all the Mainland film censorship standards, no wonder Hong Kong directors often made costume or Republic background films in the North. When they made current Mainland character stories they often lacked something. Strangely Chan Ho Sun was born in Hong Kong, grew up in Thailand, studied in the U.S., yet COMRADES ALMOST A LOVE STORY (TIM MUK MUK), THREE (SAM GAN) and PERHAPS LOVE (YU GOR OI)'s handling of Mainlanders was unconventional and received good reviews. However the two former films were about Mainland immigrants in Hong Kong and the U.S., and the latter about a Hong Kong man and Northern girl's Mainland romance. They all were related to Hong Kong and had Hong Kong stars. In AMERICAN DREAMS IN CHINA Mainland stars played Mainlanders. Despite displaying Hong Kong stars' further loss of advantage, locals playing a local story with local screen writers are actually reasonable. This time the performance is rather decent, in addition, director Chan Ho Sun, cinematographer Christopher Doyle (To Ho Fung), composer Peter Kam Pui Tat and other Hong Kong elements contributed greatly. The co-production could be said as beneficial to both sides. 3 IDIOTS Chinese Version In the film Huang Xiaoming, Deng Chao and Tong Dawei are Beijing business partners. At first they were both university students in the 1980s and toiled in their English studies as they wanted to go to the U.S. Two did not receive visa but began English courses and gradually got rich. Deng Chao's character, after disappointment in the U.S., returned to join them. The business took over as it became the nation's largest civilian operated English training school. AMERICAN DREAMS IN CHINA's inspiration came from the real Mainland "New Oriental" education technology group. Also founded by a trio, the company just like in the story was sued for copyright violation by an U.S. company and was publicly traded in the U. S. market. Liberties were taken with the story though as an all new creation. Wonderfully it somewhat resembled the Indian hit musical comedy 3 IDIOTS' Chinese version, only without song and dance. The film is humorous and lively, also with romance and friendship. This film is full of mischievous fun. Fortunately it still realistically depicts the enormous changes of Beijing from the 80s to now, from initially being rundown and poor to its modern boom the film is full of realism. Huang Xiaoming's character came from the poor countryside. Straight laced, he suffered setbacks in love and career but was able to create a miracle. He truly had both laughter and tears. The American Dream of Deng Chao's character was also full of pain. This film's English title is AMERICAN DREAMS IN CHINA. Many Chinese people indeed are studying English like mad and dreaming of American Dreams. However the entire film stresses that the American Dream is not necessarily beautiful, even more important is Chinese people fighting for the modern and strong Chinese Dream. Excessive Later But Still Worthy Of Support I like the most AMERICAN DREAMS IN CHINA's depiction of the leads' ambitions in their poverty and joy in their pain in the 80s and the 90s, which were both realistical and playful with its sense of comedy. In the new age after getting rich they became too well packaged and flaunted too much. The buddies fought, which almost led to tragedy. Later in the film the trio went to negotiate in New York and defeated the U.S., which met with the patriotic tone with exaggeration and was excessive to me. How fluent the lead's English was also came under question. Although it is not good from the beginning to the end, this time Chan Ho Sun undoubtedly achieves quality and is worthy of support. In addition this subject is not easy for current Mainland directors to grasp. Actors are all good, Huang Xiaoming in particular performs outstandingly. Worth mentioning is that the earliest to run civilian operated English lessons in China was Hong Kongers run. Then Mainlanders ran their own. Li Yang's CRAZY ENGLISH even had a documentary made. Today extremely many Chinese are learning English. With Hong Kong, Taiwan and overseas Chinese, the Chinese perhaps is the market with the most people paying money to learn English. (four out of five stars) - SHEK KEI 3. APPLE DAILY, MAY 30 2013, BIG PLANNING POLICE STORY This is a story about the Hong Kong police. Everyone probably still remembers on the small screen two newly minted police officers Tony Leung Chiu Wai and Lau Ching Wan, righteously put on the Royal Hong Kong Police hat and looked mighty and heroic. Today, the police in the people's eyes would only enforce the law with a low profile, arresting two years ago lawyers in training who participated in a protest, confining reporters who covered Hu Jintao and bearhugging from behind an unarmed female social movement participant. However, the declining image of the Hong Kong police can be found in the world of light and shadow; from the past police constables risking their lives to capture drug lords to the Special Duties Unit group prostitution solicitation, is this coincidental or our collection reflection of the police force? This is a rather interesting topic. - FUNG KWOK HONG Risking Lives Against Crime According to the Hong Kong Police Department site, the Hong Kong Police Force has almost 170 years of history and is Asia's first police organization with modern police standards to uphold public safety. It has both a glorious era and a dark age. In the 60s, the police force like other disciplinary forces had extremely severe corruption culture. In ROCK LEE (1991) Andy Lau Tak Wa's bribery scenes were only the tip of the iceberg in reality. Back then a popular slogan was "nice guys don't become cops". Traversing between both sides of the law, the police force's public image could be imagined. It also explained why back then very few police films existed. First the cops and the crooks were hard to differentiate and secondly the police was not to be "messed with". The Cho Tat Wa starred detective films were righteous but out of touch with reality. Image Overhaul In 1974, the Independent Commission Against Corruption was officially established and specialized in fighting corruption. The Hong Kong police force in order to overhaul its image worked hard to improve police and civilian relations. "Police films" flooded out of the gate, like Ng See Yuen's ANTI-CORRUPTION (LIM JING FUNG BO, 1974) and based on a real armed car robbery MILLION DOLLARS SNATCH (CHUT BAK MAN YUEN DAI GIP ON, 1976). Yet a film that had real police as leads had to be the "foreigner director" Leong Po Chih directed JUMPING ASH (TIU FUI, 1976). Just the Michael Kwan Ching Kit righteous film theme song BIG MEN (DAI JEUNG FU) has already made numerous hot blooded young people to join the police force. In the story, Ga Lun played a cop who risked his life to smash up a drug ring. His righteous and fearless "cop" image was implanted into viewers' minds. The next year RTV began production on the series DAI JEUNG FU, with Ga Lun continuing to play a cop. The show was just as popular. The people's impression of the police force overall also improved. The success of JUMPING ASH drew a group of new wave directors to the subject, Alex Cheung Kwok Ming's COPS AND ROBBERS (DIM JI BING BING, 1979) and MAN ONTHE BRINK (BIN YUEN YUN, 1981) were the most representative. In Cheung's film world, there is no blind flaunting of good triumphing over evil. The police's dark side also surfaced, but after watching viewers not only would not feel negatively about the police but respect the profession even more. In the pursuit of COPS AND ROBBERS, sergeant Wong Chung was "popped" by big crook Hui Bing Sum and people sympathized; MAN ON THE BRINK's undercover cop Ngai Dik was even more tragic as he always traversed between the dark and the light, the good and the evil, and human and ghost. In the end housing project residents mistook him for a crook and he was beaten to death right in front of his colleagues. This scene made people evaluate the dangers of police work again. Tough Guy Hero In the 80s, China and Britain signed a joint agreement. The Hong Kong Hand Over had a timetable and the police force gradually became localized. Its image became even friendlier and its transparency was also higher. At this time, the Danny Lee Sau Yin starred LAW WITH TWO PAHSES (GUNG BOOK, 1984) was born. Its depiction of the police life was the most strict, the most detailed classic. Lee Sau Yin played a veteran cop who operated with his wit, a complete opposite from the Ngai Dik played rookie. They represented the different values of two generations of cops. In the film Lee Sau Yin accidentally killed a child and became depressed and dejected. Later because of his partner Ngai Dik dying on the job, he decided to leave the force. People were sympathetic to his plight, which also gave blood and flesh to the character. The next year, the most representative cop appeared. He painted gold pain on the words Royal Hong Kong Police Force. He was POLICE STORY (GAING CHAT GOO SI, 1985)'s Chan Ka Kui (Jackie Chan). Chan Ka Kui was a righteous, kind, daring, good but impulsive small time Organized Crime Unit officer. He risked his life to capture the wanted drug lord Chor Yuen, like jumping from the fifth floor of a shopping center. He even used extraordinary measures like blackmailing his superior (Lam Kwok Hung). Jackie Chan's highly different stunts with his humorous performance made the cop even more human. In the end he ignored the law and beat Chor Yuen to the joy of many. Worth mentioning was the film's law enforcement personnel from the commissioner and superintendant to the police constables and traffic cops was very likable. Its theme song was not just a song but also the motto of police officers on the front line. Female Police On Patrol As the society demanded equality between the sexes, the film lead was no longer limited to male police officers. In YES, MADAM (WONG GA SI JEH, 1985) the entire film revolved around female cop Michelle Yeoh (Yeung Chi King). His agility and good looks were the key to the film's success. Since then many "fighting women" rose, like Sibelle Hu in THE INSPECTOR WEARS SKITS (BA WONG FA, 1988) and IN THE LINE OF DUTY 3 (WONG GA SI JEH III CHI HUNG DAI DOH)'s Cythnia Khan (Yeung Lai Ching), became the female cop spokespeople and added to female cop's rough image a touch of erotic fantasy. Summing up the 80s police films, most were positive depictions. Of course there were exceptions. The Mak Dong Hung directed, full of political metaphor LONG ARM OF THE LAW (SAN GONG KEI BING, 1984) was about Lam Wai leading a group of Mainlanders to commit crime in Hong Kong. Yet the cops and the crooks switched identities. In the end the police surrounded the Mainlanders in Kowloon Walled City. Viewers only wanted them to be able to escape but they still were killed by police gunfire. No More Royal In the early 90s Hong Kong film was at its peak, as sex, love, comedy and drama all blossomed with variety. The police film remained the highest grossing genre, like Gordon Chan Ka Seung's SDU series THE FINAL OPTION (FEI FU HUNG SUM, 1994), FIRST OPTION (FEI FU, 1996), John Woo (Ng Yu Sum)'s HARD BOILED (LAT SAU SUN TAM, 1992), and Stanley Tong Kwai Lai's POLICE STORY series (POLICE STORY 3 SUPER COP, 1992, POLICE STORY 4 FIRST STRIKE, 1996). Chan Ka Seung not only directed the SDU series but also the SDU parody FIGHT BACK TO SCHOOL (TOH HOK WAI LUNG, 1991). Stpehen Chow Sing Chi originally was the SDU captain who was ordered to find a missing gun in the school and comedy ensued. Although Sing Yeh was dirty and sloppy, in big trouble he still was able to hold his post and uphold justice. He kept student safety in mind at every turn and his image was likable. In the sequel FIGHT BACK TO SCHOOL 2, Sing Yeh was demoted to a traffic cop. He was so depressed that he was grilling chicken wings on the side of the road. After he returned to the school undercover he found his determination again. He was not scared even with an international terrorist and did not bury the Royal Hong Kong Police Force reputation. Sing Yeh's lively performance in the films undoubtedly pulled the police relationship with the community closer. YOUNG AND DANGEROUS Rises As 1997 approached, Hand Over Hong Kong films were released. These films were full of doomsday flavor, and their color and tone were rather dark. The Derek Chiu Sung Kei directed THE LOG (SAM GOR SAU SEUNG DIK GAING CHAT, 1996) took place between December 31 1996 and January 1 1997. Three cops with different personalities and positions (Kent Cheng Juk Si, Michael Wong Man Tak and Jerry Lamb Hiu Fung) all fired a shot on this day and thus connected their fate. The film displayed the Hong Kong police's pressure and changes in their lives before and after the Hand Over. In particular after the Hong Kong sovereignty was exchanged, the Hong Kong Police Force removed its crown symbol and the "Royal Hong Kong Police Force" became history. At the same time adapting from the comic book of TEDDY BOY, the YOUNG AND DANGEROUS (GOO WAT JAI ji YUN JOI GONG WU, 1996), YOUNG AND DANGEROUS 2 (1996) film series rose. The Dior Cheng Yi Kin played mob boss Chan Ho Nam was the lead. He led a group of Hung Hing Wise Guys in and out of trouble and the police became big time extras. They even became the target of Wise Guy pranks. Originally enforcing the law and maintaining order were the Wise Guys, basically they were an insult to the police force. Identity Crisis After the Hand Over, the Hong Kong Police image in the hearts of people began to change. They used to stand on the same side as the people and battled evil. Now their distance from the weak has grown further and further. They even turned the gun around to abuse the weak (violent treatment of young protestors on the streets), this trend was also often easily seen in films. As mentioned above, in the past police films were always dualistic with good and evil. The police was righteous and the crooks were evil; today's have more complexity, the police has its human dark side and travels the gray area. The most memorable definitely is INFERNAL AFFAIRS (MO GAN DOH, 2002). Tony Leung Chiu Wai played Chan Wing Yun who was assigned to go undercover in the mob. The long term psychological pressure made differentiating between good and bad hard for him. Finally he had to see a psychiatrist; Andy Lau Tak Wa played Lau Kin Ming was a mobster who joined the police force and rose to a high rank. He time and time after wanted to be "good" but in the end he was unable to reach the shore that he dreamed about. Has the role of the police already become hard to differentiate between good and bad? In Johnnie To Kei Fung's PTU (2003), the so-called "justice" that the police upheld came into question. Fat sergeant Lam Suet abuses his power and even works for the mob all for a missing gun; Madame Ruby Wong Cheuk Ling dropped her gun in fright when she faced off with the crooks. After the criminal was shot dead she opened fire in the air twice in order to take credit in her report; PTU captain Simon Yam Tat Wa turns a blind eye to his subordinates' use of extreme measures in their investigations just to help his buddy Lam Suet; the starting point was all selfish desires. Some lighter comedy films also appeared, like Joe Ma Wai Ho's LOVE UNDERCOVER (SUN JAT SI MUI, 2002) and Vincent Kok Tak Siu's DRAGON LOADED 2003 (LUNG GUM WAI, 2003). In the former lead Miriam Yeung Chin Wa was a bumbling and stumbling silly lady; in the latter lead Ronald Cheng Chung Kei was a rich kid who was after glory and fame, without a single trace of a dignified image. Image Takes A Dive In recent years, the Hong Kong Police image has hit bottom. Police officer Tsui Po Ko in 2006 killed his colleague off duty and was dubbed the "demon cop". Then one police scandal followed another. The most shocking of course was the 2008 criminal investigation department officer rape of a young girl in a Mongkok police station. The case reminded people of the Marco Mak Chi Sin directed COP ON A MISSION (JI FAT FAN FAT, 2001), which had a demon cop subject. Daniel Wu (Ng Yin Cho) played a cop whose first line was, "Better off being a crook, with a chance to get rich!" Later he indeed was assigned to go undercover and did everything bad for personal gain, framing his colleagues, killing his superior, lying to the boss and cheating with the boss' wife. Finally the Eric Tsang Chi Wai played mob boss buried him alive. The opening soon, Pang Ho Cheung produced SDU: SEX DUTIES UNIT will be a story about the SDU going to Macau for prostitutes; Dante Lam Chiu Yin's THE DEMON WITHIN (MOR GAING) was based on the Tsui Po Ko case. Obviously, the police force's overall image in the film world has already hit bottom. John Chong: No Rule Against Making Police Villains The film INFERNAL AFFAIRS' executive producer John Chong Ching earlier spoke about the gradual decline of police image in film. He felt that it had to turn with social and economical changes. He said, "In the 80s the representative figure (Danny) Lee Sau Yin played a sergeant with housing estate background. His image was more typical. By INFERNAL AFFAIRS it already turned into Lau Tak Wa's inspector, not to mention superintendant. In the past who knew about such a high rank. Film professional identities were promoted with time, the biggest reason was the economy was better and the viewers all became middle class. The so-called crime in the past were robbery, now every time is about a big time job. As characters change, many current films' police characters are not likable." He felt that from the Donald Tsang Yam Kuen case to Timothy Tong Yin Ming incidents, the supervision of the promoted was more lenient than the lower ranked public servants, Chong Ching said, "Looking back at the laws that the high officials made recently, they all supervise themselves. Simply put, years ago Sin Kam Wa, who people called 'john superintendant', was put in jail." He also agreed that as police scandals broke, and in recent years the police was accused of becoming political thugs. In movies they were no longer as positive as they used to be. Even so, Chong Ching said that when making movies about the police, Hong Kong still is a very free place. "Basically you can make whatever subject you want. You can make police villains. There is no inspection, at most they just wouldn't loan you the locations. At least as far as I know, you can't write anything bad about the police in Malaysia and the Mainland." Yet the uniforms the actors wear cannot be different from the real ones. - HO WING NING Top Ten Police Classics Hong Kong police films have to be good. For years they have created many classic police icons and groomed a positive image for the police force. 1. Cho Tat Wa Nickname: Detective Wa Since you call him "Detective Wa", he just points behind the scenes. Yet in the end he makes impromptu gestures to take credit. 2. Jackie Chan POLICE STORY's Chan Ka Kui hates evil. Without any risk for his own life he flies over roofs and walks on walls to capture criminals. His impulsiveness has already been implanted into the people's minds. 3. Danny Lee Sau Yin Nickname: Lee Sir Lee Sir has absolute justice and dignity. He has produced many police films and earned the "Lee Sir" title. 4. Lam Ka Wa Once in the police academy, he even won the Silver Whistle Award. His image from hosting JUNIOR POLICE CALL was well known. After joining the business he has played many police roles. 5. Leung Ka Lun Nickname: Ga Lun Popular because he played a fearless young cop in JUMPING ASH, hewas a top 70's star. Later he went to the U.S. and worked in auto repair. 6. Sylvia Chang Nickname: Cop Lady The mean Cop Lady in ACES GO PLACES (JUI GAI PAK DONG) was the female cop image -- short hair, rough, righteous, cold on the outside and warm inside. 7. Andy Lau Tak Wa Wa Jai played an undercover cop in the television series THE EMISSARY (LIP YING) and became an overnight success, but he in INFERNAL AFFAIRS as the mobster undercover in the police force finally opened people's eyes. 8. Michelle Yeoh (Yeung Chi King) Nickname: Royal Madame The relatively unknown Yueng Chi King rose to fame with YES MADAM. She not only solidified her "fighting woman" position but also started the female action film fever. 9. Sibelle Hu (Wu Wai Chung) Nickname: Ba Wong Fa Following the Royal Hong Kong female cop idea, the hot Wu Wai Chung played the female cop Ba Wong Fa who specialized in solving cases and being harassed by pervert partners. 10. Philip Chan Yun Kin Nickname: Retired Detective Chan Yun Kin specialized in playing the lead's superior, most were glory hounds with a little dirty mind. His representative work was GUN IS LAW (TUI YAU TAM JEUNG). Before he joined the business he indeed was a Superintendent of Police. Summation In the hearts of the people, in recent years the police has already become the united front tool of power. The Hong Kong Police Department site's seven goals and eight values are full like the Victoria Harbor Rubber Duck. At this point, the television just broadcast "Superintendent of Police Wong Koon Ho has been found guilty of public servant misconduct" news report, which left the writer shaking his head. Ultimately, we the people of Hong Kong rely on the police force. Naturally tough love makes sense, just like Tsang Chi Wai's discipline of Cheng Chung Kei in DRAGON LOADED, "Hated iron don't turn into steel!"
