MISCELLANEOUS * (2013/05/16) The 66th Cannes Film Festival opened as filmmakers and superstars arrived in Cannes from around the world. Last night Carina Lau Ka Ling happily had the support of her Cannes Best Actor husband Tony Leung Chiu Wai as they headed to Cannes; Zhang Ziyi last night already arrived in Cannes as a member of the Un Certain Regard segment jury; red carpet queen Fan Bingbing, Andy Lau Tak Wa, Sammi Cheng Sau Man, Vicki Zhao Wei, Chen Kun, Donnie Yen Chi Tan and others also arrived. Lau Ka Ling last night headed for Cannes. With husband Leung Chiu Wai in her company she was even happier; last night she first attended her friend Pansy Ho Chiu King's event before heading to the airport. Will Wai Jai who won the Cannes Best Actor with IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE (FA YEUNG NIN WA) in 2000 be lucky for his wife? Lau Ka Ling was said if she was confident about winning Best Actress with her Cannes Un Certain Regard selection BENDS (GOR GAI)? She said that she of course was happy about having Wai Jai tag along, but that did not mean that victory was certain. In addition Wai Jai had many friends in Cannes like Ang Lee and Jia Zhangke, so he would take the chance to catch up. As for singing the end credit song for the film, Ka Ling joked that she only accepted because she could not taking her friends' begging. Back then she released 3 records but she had no confidence in singing. This song could only be described as a performance that truly came from the heart, which she believed the audience would be able to experience. Even her husband Leung Chiu Wai has not heard it yet. At the premiere everyone would be able to hear it. The media also focused on whether THE GRANDMASTERS' Leung Chiu Wai and IP MAN's Yen Chi Wan will run into each other in Cannes, since many films like Lau Tak Wa, Cheng Sau Man and Johnnie To Kei Fung's BLIND DETECTIVE (MAN TAM), Lau Ka Ling and Chen Kun's BENDS and Yen Chi Tan's THE ICEMAN COMETH 3D (BING FUNG HUP 3D) will promote there. * (2013/05/16) The Benny Chan Muk Sing directed THE WHITE STORM (SO DUK) was shot on location in Hong Kong, Thailand and Macau and will complete production in June. The film's first trailer and poster have been unveiled at the Cannes Film Festival. In the poster Lau Ching Wan displayed his masculine charm and was described as Morgan Freeman of the East. The other two leads Nick Cheung Ka Fai and Louis Koo Tin Lok were oozing drama as well. Chan Muk Sing described the trio's rehearsal felt like one with Robert De Niro and Al Pacino, with A BETTER TOMORROW flavor and Quentin Tarantino tone. They created an unexpected chemical reaction. * (2013/05/15) Carina Lau Ka Ling yesterday headed to Taiwan for a store opening. She returned in the afternoon to prepare for the Cannes Film Festival, as her film with Chen Kun, BENDS (GOR GAI), has been selected for its Un Certain Regard segment. Was she looking forward to winning Best Actress? She said that she never thought about it. Now she took everything very easily. She just wanted to work seriously and enjoy the process, the result was unimportant. She revealed that her husband Tony Leung Chiu Wai will tag along. Ka Ling even performed the theme song THE BEGINNING OF THE END. After not singing for over 10 years, Ka Ling said that once at dinner with Shi Nansun, Winnie Yu Tseng and Chen Kun they thought that she was the most suitable to sing it. Thus she agreed to give it a try. She said, "In the studio I had pressure too, I could only adjust my emotions. This song was performed with half singing and half narration, the feeling was decent." * (2013/05/15) Jacqueline Chong Si Man and Linah Matsuoka yesterday attended their film KAU NUI BUT LEI 3 HING DAI production start ceremony. Recently linked to director Patrick Kong (Yip Lim Sum), Chong Si Man graciously posed for photos and even appeared in a super low cut dress. Chong Si Man said that she and the director were just friends and neighbors. She never thought about developing a relationship. She said, "I truly can't feel I am being courted, maybe I am slower in this area. For now we are just friends." She revealed that in the film she and Sammy Sum Chun Hin would be a pair and they had a car rocking scene. She said, "I don't have any bottom line, as long as we are not doing it for real then I am fine. However in terms of sexiness, in the film I would seduce Hanjin Tan (Chan Woon Yan) in lingerie, so I would ask his wife to supervise. Then I can relax and perform and won't need to explain excessively later." Yip Lim Sum also denied that he and Chong Si Man were dating. He even asked her to choose an outstanding piece of lingerie for the bed scene. * (2013/05/15) Linda Chung Ka Yun, Sire Ma Choi and Jason Chan Chi Sun yesterday attended the OFFICE OF PRACTICAL JOKES (WAN YEH WONG) celebration. Although the show was popular, Johnson Lee Si Jit had no intention for additional episodes. In August he will focus on directing a film and form a production company right now. He will still be willing to work for TVB. "I have signed the 9 year old Malaysian child star (Crystal) Lee Hing Hau. She played (Nicholas) Tse Ting Fung's daughter in the film THE VIRAL FACTOR (YIK JIN) and is very talented." * (2013/05/15) The Peter Chan Ho Sun directed, Huang Xiaoming, Deng Chao, Tong Dawei and Du Juan starred film AMERICAN DREAMS IN CHINA two days ago held a premiere press conference at the Qinghua University. Chan Ho Sun's father Chan Tung Man, wife Sandra Ng Kwan Yu and daughter Chan Si Chi attended in support. The film earlier held 20 test screenings in 7 cities and all received good reviews that said it was a "movie that would make men cry". Speaking of school life, Huang Xiaoming revealed that "(Vicki) Zhao Wei was Su Mei of my life". He said, "Zhao Wei with her big eyes and white skin struck me down right away. Later when we performed in a play, Zhao Wei curiously asked, 'Xiaoming is too nervous, your face is twitching'." Huang Xiaoming joked that he would be very shy in front of a woman he liked. Was he knocked down like he was in the film? Huang Xiaoming said, "Take a guess?" * (2013/05/14) Recently suffering a sprain, Miriam Yeung Chin Wa last night still wore 5 inch high flatforms but slowed down her pace. "My leg injury is already 70% healed, now I am working hard on physical therapy. I have to wear high heels, since flats feel like I am not wearing clothes. I lack a sense of security. platform shoes are already much safer. Last year because they were nickel heels and back stage was too dark I suffered the sprain. Hubby (Real) Ting Chi Go had a few words and told me to properly learn to walk." Chin Wa joked that she had a "parent paranoia". she said, "The 11 month old Torres began to baby talk, every time I heard sounds that were similar to 'Mama" I would imagine that my son was calling me. However my friends said that I was paranoid, my son was only making noise in preparation of teething." Chin Wa has not confirmed whether she would make the LOVE IN THE BUFF sequel (JI MING YU GU GIU YUT GA), but she did not dare to compete with Cherie Chung Chor Hung for Shawn Yue Man Lok. "I really like AN AUTUMN'S TALE (CHAU TIN DIK TUNG WA). If I would be able to work with Hung Goo and Chow Yun Fat, it would be quite a blessing. Losing Yue Man Lok to Hung Goo wouldn't be important. Fat Gor and I are very OK too, but I would have to ask Fat Soh before hand." * (2013/05/13) Chrissie Chau Sau Na worked on the Cheuk Wan Chi directing debut BAU 3 CHIU GIU WAN (EXPLOSIVE 3 ANGELS). Earlier she along with other actresses DaDa Lo Chung Chi and Hidy Yu Hiu Tung met with the press in Kuala Lumpur. Known as the "Malaysian Papaya" Chris Tong Bing Yu got the home field advantage as she removed her jacket to display her busty career line; Chau Sau Na alternatively wore a new friend "double bra twin bears". Chau Sau Na joked, "I haven't had the chance to try the papaya and the durian here, so I brought a 'friend' to counter them. I plan to eat in and take out then share the results with everyone." Tong Bing Yu hoped to take Sister Na around Malaysia to try all the delicacies. "If she wants, I don't mind sharing the papaya and durian healthy diets, with one less 'friend' she wouldn't overheat." * (2013/05/13) The recent generation of female Hong Kong directors included Mabel Cheung Yuen Ting, Ann Hui On Wa, Sylvia Chang (Cheung Ngai Ga), Barbara Wong Chun Chun, Yanyan Mak Yuen Yan, Carol Lai Miu Shuet, Aubrey Lam Oi Wa. Starting in 2013, Charlie Yeung Choi Nei and Cheuk Wan Chi join the ranks. They most recently have gone from on camera to off camera as writers as well as directors, bringing a new front to the film industry. After 20 years in the business Charlie has accumulated experience as model, actress and singer. Recently she was "promoted" to director and directing her first film CHRISTMAS ROSE (SING DAN MUI GWAI), which will be released at the end of the month. Many thought that Charlie fulfilling her director dream was by her own designs, but actually before making this film she never thought about directing. "In 2008 I suddenly had an idea and wanted to try to write a human story for the screen. Actually when I was writing the script, people around me affected me as I was very suspicious of myself. However I was able to persist to the end, the script competed in a contest and won. Originally I wanted Tsui Hark to direct for me, but he felt that I was the person who was the most familiar with the script. So he asked me to direct it myself." Everything about directing depended on chance, the same goes for Cheuk Wan Chi. When she first came in contact with the film BAU 3 CHIU GIU WA she was only negotiating to play one of the roles, but the boss knew that she had short film production experience and asked her to direct as well. After agreeing right away, she even became its writer. "The Pang Ho Cheung directed VULGARIA (DAI JOOK HEI KET) seemed to have hog up everything last year, I too want to help revive the film industry. This time I am making an action comedy. Reminded that the market has fewer women films, I used a women's angle to make the action film." As the directing fever started in the film industry, Vicki Zhao Wei, Simon Yam Tat wa and Nick Cheung Ka Fai have also joined the fray. The Zhao Wei directed youth film SO YOUNG exceeded 400 million yuan RMB at the Mainland box office and wrote a brilliant chapter for the new director. Best Actors Yam Tat Wa directed TALES FROM THE DARK (KEI WAN YEH) and Cheung Ka fai will soon start work on the supernatural film MENG LAN SUN GUNG. If they are able to make their releases this year, they may compete with Charlie and Cheuk Wan Chi for next year's Best New Director Hong Kong Film Award! * (2013/05/12) Andy Lau Tak Wa last night received the "Salento Actor Award - City of Tricase" at the Italian Consulate for his outstanding film achievement. The award last year went to Wa Jai's "Mama" Deanie Ip Tak Han. Wa Jai said, "I hope that other people would know about Hong Kong film even more and promote exchanges between Hong Kong and Italy. Would I try and make a Italian film? Take it easy, the Italian language isn't easy." Wa Jai will head to Cannes for his film BLIND DETECTIVE (MAN TAM) but he will only stay for one night. Was it because of his daughter Hanna Lau Heung Wai? Wa Jai jokingly yelled, "None of your business!" When asked how he celebrated his daughter's May 9th birthday, Wa Jai said sweetly, "At home. As for the gift, I got it! Have a son as well? Fine, I promise you!" As for Mother's Day, Wa Jai only said, "Next month will be Father's Day, the most important is for the family to be happy." Lau Tak Wa regretted that he was not able to participate in LOVE AND LET LOVE (TAI PING LUN). As for the rumor that he was replaced due to his numerous demands, Wa Jai said, "I thank Ng Yu Sum (John Woo) for issuing a statement to clarify for me. He is a gentleman who is very worthy of respect." * (2013/05/12) Singer Sita Chan Hei Yi (originally named Chan Ho Yi) tragically passed away in a car accident on April 17 and ended her 26 year short life. Two days ago services began in the Po Fook Memorial Hall, and the funeral was yesterday as the remains were transported to the Fu Shan Crematorium. Sita's younger sister carried her photo as her heartbroken parents bid farewell to their daughter on her final journey. Paco Wong could not hide his sorrow as he broken heartedly hid in a corner and wiped away tears; Lee Shing Chak's eyes were all red from the sorrow. The ceremony began at 10AM, Chan Hei Yi's family arrived at 9AM, then Chan Hei Yi's boss Paco Wong, friends Lee Shing Chak, HotCha member Crystal, Terence Siufay and others arrived. Their sorrow was hard to hide. A dozen or so fans also waited outside to send their idol on her final journey. After the ceremony, the hearse went to the Fu Shan Crematorium. The hearse was decorated with chrysanthemum and white lilies. Because Chan's parents had no religious belief, they had no taboo as they personally sent their daughter on her final journey. Yet perhaps due to excessive heartache, when Father Chan left the vehicle he required assistance from Mother Chan and friends. Chan Hei Yi's younger sister was responsible for carrying her photo. Paco Wong sadly stood in a corner of the crematorium and cried. Friend Lam Hau Man also appeared. After the cremation he and Paco Wong left through the back door. Other family and friends took the bus to a Tai Wan restaurant for the post ceremony banquet; rumored boyfriend Sammy Sum Chun Hin did not appear. Siufay admitted that when they bid farewell to Sita, everyone had a hard time with their emotions. He hoped that his late friend would rest in peace. "I wish Sita wouldn't worry too much, I know she worried about her family the most. All of us would very gladly take care of her family." Siufay revealed that Sita's sister worked all night over the video to remember Sita's everyday life. It was played in the funeral home. All the family and friends spoke, which was very touching. "They mainly described about Sita as someone who was very happy, very thoughtful, had a great and noble spirit, brought a lot of joy to friends. Thus everyone held a very important spot in everyone's hearts. Her passing had huge impulse of her, like losing a share of love." * (2013/05/11) Kabby Hui Nga Ting has been compared to an early Cecilia Cheung Pak Chi in terms of giving people an elegant and refined impression. Recently she broke into the film industry and her first film was the classic film LONELY FIFTEEN (LAN MUI JAI)'s 2013 version WHAT'S UP GIRL (MEI GAU SIU NUI). Kabby in the film played Irene Wan Bik Ha's daughter and caught attention. She hoped to melt viewers' hearts with her passion. The 18 year old Kabby was very nervous about her first performance. "Luckily Sister Wan Bik Ha took great care of me all along and made it easy for her to get into character." As a film industry newcomer Kabby was willing to accept different challenges. With a strong desire to perform since childhood, she participated in chorus and drama troupes and enjoy the applause after her performance. She said that she would like to make a comedy and a horror film the most. "I hope to be able to bring joy to everyone through comedy and train my ability to hold back laughter. At the same time I want to try horror film too because I am very daring. I wouldn't mind play ugly either." * (2013/05/11) Known as the new comer with the most potential in the music scene in recent years, Sita Chan Hei Yi (originally named Chan Ho Yi) passed away in a car accident in the early morning of April 17 and ended her 26 year short life. Yesterday her funeral services began at the Po Fook Memorial Hall. Her parents, younger sister, mentor Paco Wong, confidant Lam Hau Man, rumored boyfriend Sammy Sum Chun Hin, a group of industry friends and almost 300 fans paid their respects. Cries echoed throughout the halls and broke hearts. Mother Chan in the memorial book broken heartedly wrote, "Seeing the pajamas on your bed, the song drafts and make up on the table, my heart and insides shatter from the pain!" Rumored boyfriend Sum Chun Hin wrote, "Your singing and smile are the best gifts for fans." Paco Wong said that he would always remember Sita. Chan Hei Yi's funeral decorated the halls in white with pink roses and music symbols. Her final photo was from her second record with a brilliant smile, which her family chose for everyone to always remember her smile. Sita liked Doraemon and a cardboard likeness was on the hand to keep her company. Her sister produced a video to be played at today's funeral. Her remains will be cremated after the funeral and her ashes will be placed at the Po Fook Memorial Hall. Sita's parents and family yesterday arrived around 2PM, the location was filled with plenty of offerings, as well as origami cranes from her fans and friends. They originally wanted to fold 10,387 cranes to represent Sita's 1987 March 10 birth date, the final count was over 60,000. A moth flew in and caught everyone's attention. Dr. Lam Hau Man who reportedly funded Sita behind the scene arrived around 3:30PM to pay his respects. He stared at Sita's photo, then workers accompanied him for a final glimpse of Sita. Around 5PM he stepped out of the elevator and the media flocked to take photos. He waved them off to indicate no interview. Yesterday a public memorial took place, almost 300 fans waited early on and entered the hall around 5PM. Many fans wore school uniforms; many fans after paying their respects broke down. A female student said that she has liked Sita for a year and wished her idol a safe journey. Chan Hei Yi got along with people well, many friends in the business came to pay their respects. They included Sum Chun Hin, Fiona Sit Hoi Kei, Stephanie Cheng Yung, Alex Fong Lik Sun, Terence Siufay, Dr. Lee Shing Chak and his wife Sandy Lau Sin Ting, Kelvin Kwan Chor Yiu and others. Siufay and Lau Sin Ting were saddened, Siufay cried so hard that he needed assistance. Sum Chun Hin did not take a final glimpse of Sita. He said, "Sita's family wants to be low key. I already accepted her passing. A good friend has passed away, which is regrettable. I think Sita would want us to be happy. Today so many friends are in attendance, she should be very happy." He did not talk with Sita's parents and would not attend today's funeral. The record company originally wanted to release Sita's memorial record yesterday, but the printing could not make the schedule and the release has been postponed. 500 sets were prepared for family and friends. The photo book that came with the record included messages from Sita's family, idols and good friends, one of which was a wedding photo that Sita posed for the day before her passing. Paco Wong said, "The memorial record release is to fulfill Chan Hei Yi's wish. Singing was her favorite, her biggest dream was for more people to hear her songs. The first printing had several thousand sets." Paco Wong in the memorial book simply wrote, "Always remember you". Mother Chan broken heartedly wrote, "Touching your still moist face, seeing the pajamas in bed, the song drafts and make up on the table, my heart and insides shatter from the pain......your beautiful outside and inside will always be in my heart......I even have no regret from having this excellent daughter!" Father Chan wrote, "You are my pride, I am proud of you. I hope to be father and daughter again in the next life." Her sister wrote, "Sister, thank you for spending 20 years with me, with joy and sorrow, laughter and tears. From now on you will always be in my heart." Rumored boyfriend Sum Chun Hin wrote, "You always greet people with a smile because you say when you don't smile people would mistake you for being mad and mean. You have successfully made all the people who love you only remember your smile, proving that you are a very hard working artist who is very worthy of respect. Your singing and your smile are the best gifts for fans." Chan Hei Yi started in 2011. Although she was only in the business for two short years, she had plenty of friends in the business. In the "Chan Hei Yi memorial photo book" Sita's idols Jay Chou (Chow Kit Lun) and Nicholas Tse Ting Fung wrote, "May you rest in peace" and "May you find music wherever you go". HotCha members Crystal and Winkie, Sit Hoi Kei also wrote about their memories of her. Winkie wrote, "I liked your directness and sincerity, your smiling silly lady personality." Also enclosed was a photo of her with Sita pouting cutely. Crystal said that if she was able to, she would pretend that Sita went on a beautiful vacation and would wait to see her again in another space and time. She even asked Sita to "remember not to be forgetful and bring our love on the trip". Endy Chow Kwok Yin wrote, "Because of your optimism, self confidence, courage, you always brought smiles to others, radiated on the stage, and persisted your love and ideas". G.E.M. Tang Chi Kei has not known Sita for long, but after a few conversations she already thought Sita was very true and lovable. * (2013/05/10) Kabby Hui Nga Ting recently worked on the film WHATS UP GIRL (LAN MUI JAI 2013 ji MEI GAU SIU NUI), a continuation of Irene Wan Bik Ha's classic film LONELY FIFTEEN (LAN MUI JAI). Kabby played Wan Bik Ha's daughter. Earlier she worked on a wrap scene in To Kwa Wan. She argued with Wan Bik Ha, with her romantic troubles she wanted to jump off the building. Rain fell during the shoot, Kabby had to climb the wall on the 12th floor roof to jump off. Always afraid of height, she worked hard to overcome her fear. "I told myself not to look down." The team helped her with the safety precautions, wires and safety net, but during the shoot she was so scared that her hair were standing on its end. She also said, "For my first time on the wires, the harnesses weren't comfortable. The shoot happened to run into rain and was a little slippy, which left my legs shaking. Luckily it was successfully completed." * (2013/05/10) The Patrick Kong (Yip Lim Sum) directed Sun City new film KAU NUI BUT LEI 3 HING DAI originally intended to cast Sita Chan Hei Yi as its lead actress, her accidental passing required the script to be changed as the second lead actress Shiga Lin Si Nga was "promoted" to the lead. Jacqueline Chong Si Man who has been linked to Yip Lim Sum in rumors will be in a love triangle with Lin Si Nga and Sammy Sum Chun Hin. Two nights ago Dominic Ho Ho Man and Linah Matsuoka shot a street kiss scenes in Lan Kwai Fong. The director even asked them to kiss 360 degrees. The always beyond high Matsuoka before places already put her arm around Dominic's shoulder. As soon as the shoot began, Matsuoka began to initiate the kiss, during which laughter broke out. Although rain was falling hard, they had a roof over their heads and were not soaked. Later they shot a scene in which Lin Si Nga threw cream at them. Because cream was very hard to wash out thoroughly, the team replaced it with shaving cream. Yet after every take they had to go to the salon to wash their hair and make up anew. However they remained professional and never complained. During rehearsal they were so happy that they broke out in foul language. Dominic said "PK" and Matsuoka in the film said, "Your mother.....what the fxxk!" With her not so fluent Cantonese, as soon as she opened her mouth laughter broke out. Dominic revealed that since they have worked together many times, the kiss scene was absolutely not awkward at all. Before hand he already informed his girlfriend. He even said, "Of course my girlfriend is a better kisser! However it's the first time I had cream thrown at me, the cream went into my ears and couldn't hear anything. I had to wipe it off immediately, but it was pretty fun." In a black mask Lin Si Nga said, "I have a lot of pressure, I am afraid of causing bad takes for others and keeping them from getting off work. (Have you tried revenge like this?) I have always killed with kindness, I would rather I am unhappy myself." However Chong Si Man who did not have a scene two nights ago suddenly appeared in the rain and looked hesitant with rumored boyfriend Yip Lim Sum. She also denied that she was deliberately visiting the set. Chong Si Man's explanation was a little rough. "My make up school has a girl helping up with make up here. Around 11 I have to go to Sheung Shui for work, that's why I am here. I am not keeping anyone company." Justin Cheung Kin Sing who starred in DUE WEST OUR SEX JOURNEY (YUT LO HEUNG SAI) was asked about the sequel's interest in adding Joel Chan Shan Chung to the cast. Was he afraid that his role would be stolen? Cheung Kin Sing confidently said, "I am not, you know how smart the boss is. However in the new film I still have to remove my pants." * (2013/05/10) The 63 year old veteran action actor Chi Kuan-Chun since making SEVEN SWORDS (CHUT GIM) has already "sealed his blade" for 7 years without making a Chinese film. Most recently he returned to Hong Kong to make the Dante Lam Chiu Yin directed Emperor Motion Picture DEMON WITHIN (MOR GAING) as Daniel Wu (Ng Yin Cho)'s strict father. The emotional scenes were rather heavy as his acting bug was fully fed. He said that Director Lam's sincerity moved me. "He asked me how much I would charge for returning for a movie, I said whatever, as long as you provide the plane tickets, food and room and board it's fine." This time he put away his fist for only dramatic scenes, which inevitably made Teacher Chi feel like something was missing. He stated that he would continue to promote Hung Kuen. When he heard about a film company's plan to make a movie about it, he could not be more excited. Speaking of recent Hong Kong kung fu film development, Teacher Chi lamented about the generation gap. He admired Donnie Yen Chi Tan's agility. Unfortunately he was not tall or big enough, which seemed to restricted his development. Actually his youngest son Donny Wu (Ng Chi Ngai) earlier already signed with Emperor and determined to follow his father's foot step on the road of kung fu, which pleased Teacher Chi very much. * (2013/05/10) A magazine claimed that Hollywood director John Woo (Ng Yu Sum) was interested in making LOVE AND LET LOVE (TAI PING LUN, formerly 1949). Due to repeated postponements, the cast was changed again and again. The magazine said that Lau Tak Wa demanded "film cut rights" and finally the lead was switched to the even cheaper Wu Xiubo. Ng Yu Sum yesterday issued a statement with Terence Chang Ka Chun and clarified that the report was Wu Xiubo replacing Lau Tak Wa was untrue. LOVE AND LET LOVE originally was scheduled to start production in March but due to a variety of reasons it was postponed until July. Lau Tak Wa already had a concert tour scheduled for the second half of the year and had to start rehearsal in June. Thus he had to resign from this film. Ng Yu Sum and Lau Tak Wa have been in the film industry for years and have always wanted to work together. They did not expect that scheduling would prevent them from taking advantage of such a good opportunity. Both felt exceptional regrettable. In the statement Ng Yu Sum and Chang Ka Chun hoped to be able to work with Lau Tak Wa on their next film. In other words, Ng Yu Sum stressed that he remained friendly with Wa Jai and were not at odds. Wa Jai has always respected the director and thus the rumor was dispelled. * (2013/05/09) Jay Chou (Chow Kit Lun) yesterday attended the film THE ROOFTOP's press conference with Eric Tsang Chi Wai and Alan Kuo (Or Yau Lun). Chairman Chou this time did not cast his rumored boyfriend Hannah Quinlivan as the lead actress. Instead he asked new comer Lin Xin Ai to perform. Recently they were rumored to be acting ambiguously off camera. Why did he not ask Hannah Quinlivan to perform? He said, "I like girls who are full of a refreshing feeling, the rumored lead actress would only distract my attention!" [ BLAH OF THE WEEK ] Columns, Reviews, Interviews 1. MING PAO DAILY, MAY 12 2013, FILM WORDS I LOVE YOU, MOM: Inevitably Melodramatic Just in time for Mother's Day, the Tiffany Chan Lai Ying directed small budget Hong Kong film I LOVE YOU, MOM (MAMA, NGOR OI NEI) is the most appropriate. The film undoubtedly is too conventional, and its depictions of human dog relationship and mother daughter relationship are inevitably melodramatic and not right for my taste. No matter what, the dog in the film is cute, Wong Chui Yu and Gigi Wong Suk Yi also perform decently together. The story also is not too simple, suitable for young children, mothers and dog lovers. Yet recently it only has one show a night at MegaBox and few knows about it. Now Hong Kong films that do not have big stars or big productions have difficulty with release scheduling. When they are released they do not catch any attention, supporting Hong Kong film is all talk. (Two out of five stars) - SHEK KEI 2. APPLE DAILY, MAY 11 2013, MY HOME FIELD JOHN CHONG TAKES THE PULSE OF HONG KONG FILM The Chinese titles of INFERNAL AFFAIRS (MO GAN DOH), LETHAL WEAPON and THE TERMINATOR had zen, explosiveness and science fiction and all came from John Chong Ching. Viewers may not know who he is, but movies that he has distributed like INITIAL D (TAU MAN JI D), LOVE IN A BUFF (JI MING YU CHUN GIU) and INFERNAL AFFAIRS II (MO GAN DOH II) you definitely have paid to watch. In his 30 years of filmmaking experience from Peter Lam Kin Ngok's Media Asia to Raymond Wong Pak Ming's Pegasus CEO, he in his new book LIGHT AND SHADOW ROAD takes the pulse of Chinese film, evaluate filmmakers' directions and determine the life and death of Chinese film. - HO WING NING Earlier Chong Ching spoke about his new book LIGHT AND SHADOW ROAD. Filmmaker naturally talked about movies. As one of the chapters discussed the survival of Hong Kong film, he felt that Hong Kong film business' early advantage was in financing film productions and overseas distributions. Now the glory is no longer what it was. Chong Ching said, "The situation started to change in 2008, the Mainland film market no longer 'lacks money'. Mainland film companies can find foreign companies for distributions. The situation is more and more obvious, so they don't have to work with you." Rise of Small Budget Films On the other hand, the Mainland market is not all good either. For example last year's total Mainland box office reached 1.77 billion RMB, 55% of which belonged to Hollywood films. Chong Ching said, "The Mainland situation is very simple, people like to watch foreign films because the people have been enlightened. People of my old man's era don't like to read subtitles, then with us we watch anything with subtitles. Mainland is the same way now, as long as the production is good it's fine. They want to watch many different genres. Why LOST IN THAILAND and IF YOU ARE THE ONE series are successful? Aside from new genres they also have foreign flavors." Chong Ching felt that because Chinese films did not lack money, they only focused on big productions. Yet the box office guarantee days were no longer as they were before, rising were small budget films that were closer to everyday life. He explained, "Aside from LOST IN THAILAND, LOVE IS NOT BLIND and CHERISH OUR LOVE FOREVER, co-productions like Pang Ho Cheung's LOVE IN THE BUFF (CHUN GIU YU JI MING) due to new enough subjects would perform well and bring other another subject. Since co-productions have already become the trend, they should not be treated like a scourge." Have To Learn To Adapt As for someone who worried that by following the co-production framework, Hong Kong film specialty would become extinct and in its place movies that are neither fish nor fowl. Chong Ching felt that the idea was excessive. "Of course there are examples of failure, but when you watched PROTEGE (MOON TUNG), CONFESSION OF PAIN (SEUNG SING) and CONNECTED (BO CHI TUNG WA) you had no problem. The fact is how you work within the framework. Hong Kong film advantage has always been adaptability, it has to accept that the film industry is market driven, Mainland is the biggest market." From working as an ad writer in the Cinema City era to starting to write scripts, then joining Richard Li's Satellite Television and forming with a group of co-workers Media Asia, Chong Ching found the distribution of the film I HAVE A DATE WITH SPRING (NGOR WOR CHUN TIN YAU GOR YUEK WUI) the most memorable. He said, "At the time Media Asia was just established, so we mustered up the courage to distribute the film. We didn't expect that the film would bomb in the first week, so we thought the hundred thousand were up in smoke! Restless, I went to survey the cinema on Saturday and saw bleached blond kids who were looking for a movie to watch. So I introduced them to watch SPRING and said, 'This is my card, if after watching you feel it's bad, I will refund your ticket.' After the show the blond couple had nothing but praise. SPRING's final box office reached 20 million, aside from profit the sense of satisfaction was just as great." Roster To paraphrase Pang Ho Cheung's foreword in Chong Ching's book LIGHT AND SHADOW ROAD, when Chong Ching joined the business he had more or less a youthful arrogance. Thinking that he was special how could he be buried? After 30 years in the film industry, Chong Ching witnessed many directors who were more special than he was. Pang Ho Cheung I supported the LOVE IN A PUFF production. Pang Ho Cheung had crossed paths with many investors but got along well with me, perhaps because we both started as creators. His passion and enthusiasm for film was beyond any doubt and rarely seen in the industry. Starting from FULL TIME KILLER (CHUEN JIK SAT SAU) he already had stories that could never be used up. Pang Ho Cheung's knowledge and creativity more or less had to do with his fondness to read. Ng See Yuen When I was a screen writer with Director Ng, we thought of shooting the June 4 incident. Yet because of financing issues it was set aside. Director Ng started as a red trouser performer and became a director in his 20s. He learned most of his technique on his own, once a veteran in the business tested him how many shots were in a film, he brought two blank pieces of paper and a paper bag, for every shot he tore off a piece from the paper. Finally the paper bag had 300 pieces. Ringo Lam Lan Tung He was my benefactor during the Cinema City era. At the time Lam Lan Tung was already the director of the ON FIRE film series. He not only approached me about film story ideas but also let me write the lyrics to the film PRISON ON FIRE (GAM YUK FUNG WON) theme song FULL OF HOPE. Lam Lan Tung gave people the impression that his instinct was very accurate. The range that he displayed in the film left many stunned. Andrew Lau Wai Keung A director with the innocence of a child, his efficiency at work was one of the best. Thus many investors liked to have him as their director. In addition Lau Wai Keung was known for his luck. For example when rain was obviously falling, as soon as he was ready to shoot the sun would come out. That happened in multiple occasions. Started as a cinematographer, he with camera operation had his own unique ways. Johnnie To Kei Fung While at Media Asia, he was the director who I dealt with the most. He was quite a scholar who had philosophical flavor. Some thought that To Kei Fung would be hard to communicate with, the fact was as long as you could convince him he was very capable of accepting other people's opinions. Yet it was easier to talking about reaching his level than actually doing so. His film productions have already reached the level of art. LIFE WITHOUT PRINCIPLE (DUET MING GUM) was a film that had a lot of his own concepts. Feng Xiaogang He very much liked to try new things. He was able to achieve the dark comedy of BIG SHOT'S FUNERAL and the tear jerking works of AFTER SHOCK and THE ASSSEMBLY. He succeeded because he was never satisfied with success. He was very demanding of his script. He even appreciated producers who knew how to read scripts. Thus he and I got along particularly well. 3. APPLE DAILY, MAY 9 2013, BIG PLANNING LIGHT AND SHADOW COFFEE SHOP Ngau Kee, Lei Garden, Mei Yi Lim, each one is a restaurant with history and humanity. In recent years under the real estate tyranny they have either closed or relocated. In their places are chair operation faux high class restaurants, perhaps Hong Kongers have been stripped of their right to eat. These old shops with long history were also important locations for Hong Kong films. Before the flood of time, let us take the time to visit them before we have to remember them in light and shadow only. - HO WING NING, FUNG KWOK HONG Back then because of Wong Kar Wai's IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE (FA YEUNG NIN FA), the Causeway Bay eatery that was full of nostalgia Goldfinch Restaurant became famous. Even Japanese fans would come to Hong Kong on a pilgrimage. The restaurant is filled with film stills and even releases its famous IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE package as many flock to it. Playing Tony Leung Chiu Wai's wife in the film, Paulyn Sun Kai Kwan in the film can only be heard. Her shadow can only be seen in the video production footage. Even so, the little connection to Director Wong to her is a very rare experience. Earlier she said in an interview at the Goldfinch Restaurant, "The director said that after watching my film THE UNTOLD STORY 2 (YUN YUK CHA SIU BAU II) and thought I had a lot of potential. He also said that my voice sounded good." Goldfinch was one of the places where Sun Kai Kwan eats in Causeway Bay. Her favorite was the Chinese style soy sauce steak and the guilt filled, super fattening rice with meat sauce. She said, "I grew up overseas, but I like my steak with ketchup and sweet and sour sauce. It's very 'lame' but it really is very delicious!" Tailored Chinese Dress For Her Own Use Sun Kai Kwan originally had a lot of screen time in IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE, like an argument scene with Leung Chiu Wai and a scene with Maggie Cheung Man Yuk. In the film although her Chinese dress often flashed by, art director William Chang Suk Ping put a lot of effort into its design and attracted her to privately ask the old tailor from the production to make one for her own use. As for the most memorable, the director's storytelling method had to be it. She joked, "When we went to shoot in Bangkok, everyday the director would give me a hand written script. I was thinking about talking to him about how to shoot the scene with Wai Jai, but he smiled and said, 'don't ask me, I don't even know what I am making!'" Goldfinch Restaurant Film: IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE (2000) The dark lighting of a foreign restaurant not only provides romance for couples in love but also a meeting place for cheating couples. When Leung Chiu Wai met with Cheung Man Yuk at the Goldfinch Restaurant for steaks, at first he just wanted to find out the truth behind his other half's cheating. Yet they ate and chatted, they unknowingly fell into the entangling love trap and stepped on Sun Kai Kwan and Roy Cheung Yiu Yeung's indecent road. The Goldfinch Restaurant has stood in Hong Kong for half a century. The lighting decoration in the shop maintained the 60s nostalgia still, which modern chain style restaurants could not compare to. Wong Kar Wai used light and shadow to "preserve" this location. The owner took the chance to release the "IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE" and 2046 packages and brought film fans to persist in their business. Address: 13-15 Lan Fong Road, Causeway Bay Recommendation: Black Pepper Beef Must Visit Film Fan Holy Lands Stanley Street Stalls Film: CHUNG KING EXPRESS (1994) A chanced encounter often leads to a romance. Police officer Tony Leung Chiu Wai was assigned to a Central beat, for convenience he dined at the Stanley Street stalls and ran into Faye Wong. She took the chance and learned Wai Jai's address. She even occupied his rundown home. When they were in love, the opening of CALIFORNIA DREAMING played in their heads and thus they no longer needed to test each other anymore. The commercial area of Central where every inch was gold seemingly have been overrun by real estate tyrants. Yet in the other corner where all the famous stores stood, several sheet metal street stalls hid on Stanley Street to provide ordinary people with a place to catch their breath, eat, drink and meet. At the same time they protest silently against the real estate tyranny. Address: Stanley Street, Central Recommendation: Salt and Pepper Squid, (Sing Kee) China Cafe Film: ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE TRIAD SOCIETY (1996) Old style tea houses are where tigers crouch and dragons hide, with business tycoons who make over 100 million a year snaking a break in the afternoon and mob bosses who once reigned supreme gathered and made connections. Francis Ng Chun Yu as the Mongkok boss would set up shop in China Cafe, which was hidden on Canton Road. The traditional old tea house always had a second floor balcony seating with more privacy. Of course Chun Yu did not care about the milk tea, from above he took a peek at the cashier Rachel Lee Lai Chun. China Cafe began as early as 1963, the plaque outside the store already made people salute. The checkered tile wall inside was seeping nostalgia as well. Of course with Johnnie To Kei Fung's camera effects, China Chef became a holy land that the young generation of film fans had to visit. Address: 1077A Canton Road, Mongkok Recommendation: Condensed Milk Butter Toast, Mixed Ice Hung Wan Cafe Film: THE LUCKY GUY The so called Neighborhood Romeo, Custard Tart Prince are just urban legends. It may not have picky clients who order fried egg sandwich without crust and toasted, it cannot possibly have Stephen Chow Sing Chi and Sammi Cheng Sau Man outside the shop dance the CALIFORNIA DREAMING variation to reminisce their first love. Yet plenty of real estate tyrants who would increase rent like Sandra Ng Kwan Yu exist now. The little girl with Tsang Kun Wing, Maggie Wong Mei Ki, today has already become the "BB" in the hearts of otakus. Hung Wan Cafe because of THE LUCKY GUY got lucky and still holds a spot in the high turnover Mongkok. The famous butter custard tart of course deserves the credit, but like Brother Tat says, "For neighborhood business, remembering the neighborhood tastes is the most important". This humanity is already priceless. Address: 726 Shanghai Street, Mongkok Recommendation: Custard Tart Lin Heung Tea House Film: THE LONGEST SUMMER (1998) Tony Ho Wai Chiu played a Chinese British soldier who was left with nothing after the Hong Kong Handover. When he went to look for a job at the Department of Labor he ran into the wall, even he went to rob a bank someone beat him to it. He was able to withstand the torture from the changes of the times, but he was not able to take his little brother Sam Lee Chan Sam's betrayal. He originally wanted to go to Lin Heung Tea House for a drink, but two warring child gangs disturbed him. The cruel fate forced Ho Wa Chiu into the corner. His rage erupted, with two blades in hand he chased and chopped away at the gangs as the ultimate indictment of the new era. Lin Heung Tea House opened a branch in Hong Kong in 1918, one of the few remaining old style tea houses in Hong Kong. The 97 Handover to it could not be more minor, its true test might be its skyrocketing rent. Address: 160-164 Wellington Street, Central Recommendations: Lotus Bun, Pork Dumpling She Wong Lam Film: LOVE ME MOVE MY MONEY (2001) You may be full with drink when you are in love, but you still need something in the stomach! Tony Leung Chiu Wai and Gordon Lam Ka Tung were both foodies who deliberately went from Central to Sheung Wan for snake. They also hooked up super hot office ladies Shu Qi and Teresa Mak Ka Kei as they had both a feast for their stomachs and their eyes. The snake escape after was just a bonus. Seeing Shu Qi in her low cut clothes making the rescue, Wai Jai already became a dead snake to be butchered by her. She Wong Lam is well known, with two baskets of big snakes at its door it is ripe of killing air. Yet the boss is very friendly, displaying ancient wooden dressers that used to store snakes. The antiquated trace had a type of unspeakable sense of familiarity. Address: 13 Hillier Street, Sheung Wan Recommendation: Snake stew Pak Kung Cafe Film: GOLDEN ROOSTER 2 (2003) Speaking of Pak Kung Cafe, people are often reminded of the 2003 SARS invasion of Hong Kong. In the film Golden Rooster Sandra Ng Kwan Yu was a cafe boss lady. During those sorrowful days no one visited her cafe and people had to wear medical masks even at home. Leon Lai Ming, a doctor with SARS, paid a visit once, Kwan Yu presented him with loving Isatis Root and pig lung soup and even joked that she made it with 1:99 solution. People who grew up in To Kwa Wan all know Pak Kung Cafe. This restaurant that has been running for over half a century last year could not withstand the impact of time and closed its door. Luckily someone took over and turned it into a Chinese restaurant, even keeping the decorations of the past and continued the old store's spirit. Address: 91 Ma Tau Kok Road, To Kwa Wan Lok Hau Fook Restaurant Film: AV (2005) Wong Yau Nam, Tsui Tin Yau, Lawrence Chou Chun Wai, and Derek Tsang Kwok Cheung truly knew where to eat, as they actually thought of the film within a film Havoc In Amamiya to arrange for Japanese adult video actress Manami Amamiya to come to Hong Kong in order to get close to her. As for where they took her to eat, Lok Hau Fook in Kowloon City was the only choice. The several recent hot blooded university graduates met the extremely hot Amamiya for the first time, their lust arrived before the food did. This classic Chaozhou restaurant has stood guard on Hau Wong Road for over 50 years and witnessed many plane take offs and landings. Today even with the airport flown to Chak Lap Kok it still silently protested against the flood of time, relying on an old Hong Kong humanity. Address: 1-3 Hau Wong Road, Kowloon City Recommendations: steamed shrimp and crab roll, Chaozhou style pickled leaves wrapped eel Honolulu Coffee Shop Film: CROSSING HENNESSY (2010) Wanchai is multidimensional, with tall commercial buildings, simple and rundown residences and red light night spots it does not fit in with its neighbors Admiralty and Causeway Bay. Yet it is has leisurely atmosphere that put people under its spell. Just like Jacky Cheung Hok Yau and Tang Wei's encounter at the Honolulu, from meeting, getting to know each other to being in love their romance is not earth shattering but slowly percolating with lingering fragrance of coffee. The writer was born in Wanchai and had a heavy relationship with Hennessy Road. After school he often passed by this coffee shop, sometimes when he was in luck he could make Grandpa buy a custard tart for him and he was happy all afternoon. Today's Hennessy Road rent took off, only a few of the past restaurants remained much to the regret of many. Address: 176-178 Hennessy Road, Wanchai Recommendation: Buttered Pineapple Bun, hot coffee Sing Heung Yuen Film: OVERHEARD 2 (2011) The most rich and famous people get, the more they like to visit old style tea stalls whether for nostalgia or for psychological balance. Undoubtedly they enable these old stores to continue on. Lau Ching Wan and Wu Fung, two stock market tycoons, visited Sing Heung Yuen street stall in the middle of the night, huddled for warmth with red wine and shared the history of the Landlord Society. Their extravagant fashion was a strong contrast to the stall's simple set up. Sing Heung Yuen stands in the intersection of Gough Street and Mee Kun Street, opposite the just closed Ngau Kee. It can be considered a star class street stall, which almost always has a long line and a hot spot where paparazzi stake out for Kenny Wong Tak Bun. Its trademark tomato and beef macacroni would make people drool just thinking about it. Speaking of which, Sing Heung Yuen does not open at night and does not provide hot pot casserole, that scene with Lau Ching Wan was purely fictional.
