MISCELLANEOUS * (2013/02/20) Becoming a ten million box office female star, DaDa Chan Jing with VULGARIA (DAI JOOK HEI KET)'s Popping Candy received a Hong Kong Film Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress. She followed up and continued to occupy the "vulgar" market as she performed in the Hong Kong film HARDCORE COMEDY (CHUNG HAU MEI). Two nights ago DaDa appeared in Lan Kwai Fong and gave the neighbors and the tourists on the drinking street free additional entertainment, she seriously was hardcore. Two nights ago, William Chan Wai Ting who just returned to Hong Kong from a holiday with girlfriend Charlene Choi Cheuk Yin jumped right into the production and played a driver who gave a ride to DaDa. They passed Lan Kwai Fong when they ran into her boyfriend Wilson Chin Kwok Wai with another woman Jackie X (Tsui Kai Kei). She ran out of the car in a rage and performed a fight over her guy on the street. DaDa was flailing her limbs and looked very convincing. Because they shot on a busy street, many neighbors and drinkers stopped and watched; later DaDa realized that everyone's focus was on her chest and she could only awkwardly cover up with her handbag. Almost becoming the Hong Kong film guest star king, Chin Kwok Wai revealed that he was only guest starring in one scene as DaDa's sugar daddy. When the two women met they fought. He jokingly asked the director why not add bed scenes with DaDa, but he was just joking. * (2013/02/20) Fiona Sit Hoi Kei won the Best Actress award at the 2013 Golden Koala Chinese Film Festival with THE BOUNTY (YUEN HUNG) in Australia. She was very excited and gave a special thank to director Fung Chi Chiang and Chapman To Man Jat. Fiona said, "I will always remember how good they both are!" She also thanked her company and Paco. Directors of the films in competition were limited to have made 3 movies or less in order to encourage new directors and their work. THE BOUNTY was Fung Chi Chiang's debut as a director. * (2013/02/20) The Emperor Motion Picture IP MAN THE FINAL FIGHT (IP MAN JUNG GIK YUT JIN) starred Best Actors and Best Actress Anthony Wong Chau Sun, Eric Tsang Chi Wai and Anita Yuen Wing Yi respectively, as well as Gillian Chung Yun Tung and Jordan Chan Siu Chun. In one of the major scenes Chau Sun and Chi Wai fought in the "duel of the century". Chau Sun's arms seemed to have been "steel clad" as he fought for 6 hours with Chi Wai. They both said it was a lot of fun. Before the shoot, Chau Sun and Chi Wai spent two hours on the action design with the action director. They repeatedly practiced for three hours in order to complete the shoot in one take. Chau Sun with Wing Chun fought the White Crane style leader Chi Wai. They both were almost hit, when the shoot completed the entire set applauded and cheered. Chau Sun said that during rehearsal he wore protective gloves but in the actual performance he was bare handed. He never thought that the soon to be 60 year old Chi Wai still fought very well. His arms were also all bruised from the fight. Chi Wai pointed out that Chau Sun did not hold back and treated him like the human wooden stump. He was almost launched in the air from getting hit. * (2013/02/20) Eric Tsang Chi Wai, Kate Tsui Tsz Shan, and Samantha Ko Hoi Ning two nights ago attended the Lunar New Year film I LOVE HONG KONG 2013 (2013 NGOR OI HK GUNG HEI FAT CHOI) New Spring Group Visit. Chi Wai who just returned from the U.S. said that although the box office broke HK$15 million it was no match for previous years, but he was not disappointed. The most important was good word of mouth. He pointed out that every movie had similar amount of viewers, the cause of death was this year more movies divided up the cake. Its box office could not rival JOURNEY TO THE WEST CONQUERING THE DEMONS (SAI YAU GONG MOR PIN( was because its 3D ticket prices were more expensive. As for defeating competition Raymond Wong Pak Ming's HOTEL DELUXE (BAK SING JAU DIM), he said, "As long as we were able to sell we were fine, as long as everyone was happy!" He explained that Veronica Yip Yuk Hing's comeback could not help but to have too little screen time, because the role in the script was that much. In addition now he would not force her to play the character in her youth. He even added a Bollywood dance for Hing Hing to perform. He revealed that after the group visit he would wait for Hing Hing to call from the U.S. and reply whether she would be able to return to Hong Kong for a series. Yet the key ultimately would be whether Hing Hing would be able to convince her husband. * (2013/02/19) The Ronny Yu Yun-Tai directed new film SAVING GENERAL YANG (JUNG LIT YEUNG GA JEUNG) gathered all the China, Hong Kong and Taiwan handsome actors. Earlier the male leads Adam Cheng Siu Chau, Dior Cheng Yi Kin, Wu Chun and others posed for two film posters. Raymond Lam Fung was late but he bought a lot of authentic Hong Kong snacks like Little Bowl Fin and Shu Mai for everyone. Everyone talked about the production as well, Ekin admitted that riding a horse for a long time hurt his rear a lot. The film SAVING GENERAL YANG starred Cheng Siu Chau, Ekin Cheng, Wu Chun, Vic Chow Yun Man, Yu Bo, Lam Fung and others, but the poster shoot not only had the battlefield costumes but also in the not so traditional suits. Lam Fung in the film played the fifth son and in terms of chok he absolutely was the best. When the photographer asked Jai Jai to chok as much as he could in his poses, he was a little bashful. Speaking of the production, everyone agreed that the toughest was spending almost of the time on horses. When asked if he experienced what hurt a man the most while riding a horse, Ekin joked, "Riding a horse for such a long time, the rear suffers too!" Jai Jai and Wu Chun said that the on screen brothers were very close, they even often gathered around to joke around. Jai Jai's jokes were the most rotten. Playing the father of all the soldiers, Chau Guoon described riding a horse like a woman. Chau Guoon said, "Some said that horse was like a woman, it needed proper communication and its personality was very hard to predict. If it was used to it, you just had to stroke its mane and it would follow your orders." This time the film had many key actors. How did Yu Yun Tai distribute each person's role? He said, "I thought about this problem before, luckily this time the subject was a group rescue of their father. So it had a lot of ensemble scenes and everyone's screen time was very evenly distributed." * (2013/02/19) Wing Chun master Sin Kwok Lam and disciple Rose Chan Ka Wun yesterday were guest speakers at the ATV "performing art training project". Master Sin taught the artists to learn to grasp opportunities and cited the example of the film IP MAN, which he recommended to Raymond Wong Pak Ming to make. Finally the film's leads Donnie Yen Chi Tan, Lynn Xiong (Hung Doi Lam) and Louis Fan Siu Wong all became stars. He said, "Yen Chi Tan after IP MAN went from B class to A class and his salary went from 3 million to 40 million." However, Master Sin at the end of the year will make a movie about Hung Kuen but would not ask Yen Chi Tan to star. He said, "I can't afford 40 million. I want to get (Anthony) Wong Chau Sun and (Eric) Tsang Chi Wai to play Wong Fei Hung and Butcher Wing, and my disciple Chow Ting Yu would play Lau Cham." He praised Chau Sun in the film IP MAN THE FINAL FIGHT (IP MAN JUNG JIK YUT JIN) was the most convincing Ip man. "I have made many IP MAN movies, no one else's words are more reputable than mine. Wong Chau Sun's martial art action has a grand master, elder style. Yen Chi Tan's fighting style resembles a killer's." * (2013/02/19) After the New Spring holiday, the Mainland and the Hong Kong Lunar New Year film box office conducted a small summation. Continuing its Mainland momentum, JOURNEY TO THE WEST CONQUERING THE DEMONS after 8 days in release broke the 600 million yuan RMB mark at the box office to become the Mainland Lunar New Year champion. As for Hong Kong, JOURNEY reached HK$22 million and became the Chinese film champion. Although it could not rival foreign film A GOOD DAY TO DIE HARD's 24.73 million, it was able to overcome its competition at the single day box office. JOURNEY's momentum is rather strong. Entering the second wave of promotions to pump up the box office, the film company is negotiation with Stephen Chow Sing Chi about his schedule. Hopefully he will attend the Mainland and Hong Kong audience appreciation events and celebrations. In addition the other two Lunar New Year films I LOVE HONG KONG 2013 (2013 NGOR OI HK GUNG HEI FAT CHOI) made 14.69 million in Hong Kong while HOTEL DELUX (BAK SING JAU DIM) made 13.78 million. * (2013/02/19) Taiwan domestic Lunar New Year film DAVID LOMAN reached NT$300 million in the shortest time in Taiwan film record. Its momentum is even stronger than CAPE NO. 7 and WARRIORS OF THE RAINBOW: SEEDIQ BALE and is catching up with YOU ARE THE APPLE OF MY DAY as it enters the top three Taiwan total film box office. First time director Chiu Li-Kwan immediately became a "300 million big director" and received many friends' congratulation text messages. Sister Kwan invited two Taiwan god class actors Chu Ko Liang and Auntie Su Chu this time, along with the new generation idol couple Amber Kuo and Tony Yang to defeat all of the movies of the same periods. However some critics said that the film had too much foul language and the comedy was too vulgar. Sister Kwan thanked everyone for their suggestions and critique. She knew that she had room for improvement, but she hoped that everyone's focus would not be just on the foul language. This only displayed certain Taiwan grass root little people's real lives. She also pointed out that heroes were not afraid of starting low, when even lower they still had the life force to bend down and jump up again. Ultimately not everyone could play a gentleman. She urged everyone to not only discuss the film but also continue to buy tickets and go to the movie. * (2013/02/19) Jackie Chan yesterday went to Seoul to promote his film CZ12 (SUP YI SUN CHIU). Originally Korean star Kwon Sang-Woo was scheduled to attend but he was working on his new television series. Jackie Chan kept praising Kwon Sang-Woo's outstanding performance. "Normally I would call his brother like a Korean woman would. When he goes to China for an ad or film shoot, I would tell him how this company and that company were like I was his manager." * (2013/02/18) Nick Cheung Ka Fai and Daniel Wu (Ng Yin Cho) after the New Spring holiday resumed work on the Emperor new film MOR GAING (DEMON COP). Yesterday the team worked on a gun fight scene in Tsim Sha Tsui. Director Dante Lam Chiu Yin arranged for uniformed cop Ka Fai to shoot into the crowd. Some extras dodged left and right. Daniel was trapped inside a vehicle and could not move. He could only shoot from afar to stop Ka Fai. As the actors were about to take their places, suddenly several thugs appeared to hinder the production. Some were yelling loud and silenced the location. The crew was helpless. After several interventions finally the matter was settled. At the time Ka Fai and Daniel witnessed everywhere from their resting spot. Daniel said, "I am not scared, with so many people here nothing would happen. The producer can handle it." As for the production hindrance, Ka Fai half jokingly said, "I don't know why, this movie always has similar situations." In comparison to the thugs, Ka Fai was more nervous about how he held his gun. He often practiced and even jokingly asked reporters, "Do I look cool?" Actually having worked on the police force before show business, Ka Fai was rather familiar with how to hold a gun. Turning bad in the film Ka Fai was already in character as soon as he took his mark. As soon as Director Lam yelled action, he immediately ignored Daniel who was trapped in the vehicle and fired into the crowd. After several reaction shots smoke arose. Several residents above looked around but they were not scared. Instead they wanted to see stars and took photos with their phones. * (2013/02/18) Irene Wan Bik Ha recently appeared on a Cable Entertainment News interview and shared her years of filmmaking experience. She said that the most memorable was when she made the film LONELY FIFTEEN (LAN MUI JAI), she even spoke about her thrilling suicide by train scene. When she worked with Andy Lau Tak Wa on EVERLASTING LOVE (TING BUT LIU DIK OI) she said, "At the time I was only 17, whenever we had intimate scenes Wa Jai and I couldn't help but laugh. We needed many takes before we were able to complete the shoot. However after making this movie I left the film industry for three years and returned to school because my family didn't agree with me making movies at too young an age. Later I ran into an attractive character and returned to film. As soon as I fell in love with making movies it became an addiction, I gained a different sense of satisfaction from film." * (2013/02/18) Two nights ago director Chung Shu Kai led Eric Tsang Chi Wai, Wong Cho Nam, Wilson Chin Kwok Wai and 16 Miss Chinese International candidates to the Lunar New Year film I LOVE HONG KONG 2013 (2013 NGOR OI HK GUNG HEI FAT CHOI) audience appreciation in Tseung Kwan O and gave away presents to viewers. Wong Cho Nam's girlfriend Leanne Li Yanan was a former Miss Chinese International and some joked that he had quite an eye for picking Miss Chinese International. However this time he was unwilling to make a pick; Chi Wai joked that he did not use the eyes of a viewer but full intention for private use. Cho Nam joked, "I don't dare to say! She lives nearby, there are ears everywhere!" As for the film making HK$12 million, Tsang Chi Wai said, "I am very happy. Due to an increase of competition this year, the opening day box office wasn't ideal. We kept chasing until we finally caught on and won. Maybe this year the film had more touching spots, leading to word of mouth along with people home from their holiday." Speaking of Sandra Ng Kwan Yu's complaint about their kiss scene in the film PRINCESS AND SEVEN KUNG FU MASTERS (SIU GUNG CHUN MO LUM) when she ended up with a face full of drool and he even deliberately made bad takes, Chi Wai said, "This Ng Kwan Yu is irresponsible with her words. I couldn't be more scared about that scene. I am so familiar with her husband (Peter) Chan Ho Sun. I constantly told her to brush her teeth but she didn't. Now she is still saying this, but I think I have kissed her before." * (2013/02/17) The Longman Luk Kim Ching and Longman Leung Lok Man directed Hong Kong film COLD WAR (HONG JIN) was a hit in Singapore, Malaysia, China, Hong Kong and Taiwan. Last month lead Aaron Kwok Fu Sing treated the team to a celebration and revealed that a sequel will be made. As the outside has been curious about the mystery behind the scene boss who did not appear in the first film was, the film company reportedly was in negotiation with Chow Yun Fat to play the big boss in the sequel to battle wits and power with the Police Commissioner Kwok Fu Sing. Fat Gor has not made a pure Hong Kong film for 18 years. If this time he successfully lands in COLD WAR 2, it will be great news to Hong Kong viewers. The Edko Film invested film COLD WAR cost HK$25 million. The film in Hong Kong made around HK$43 million, over 260 million RMB in the Mainland, NT$60 million in Taiwan and over 7 million ringgit in Malaysia. Edko boss Bill Kong Chi Keung saw how big of a hit COLD WAR has been decided to make a sequel this year and invite Chow Yun Fat to return to make COLD WAR 2. Fat Gor after working on Wai Ka Fai's PEACE HOTEL in 95 went to work in the U.S. Later after he returned to Hong Kong the Hong Kong film market began to decline. He focused his market development center on the Mainland and never worked on another pure Hong Kong films again. He worked on either foreign films or co-productions for the Mainland market. However these genres ultimately did not meet with Hong Kong viewer tastes and had average performances at the Hong Kong box office. Thus Hong Kong viewers all looked forward to Fat Gor's return to the domestic Hong Kong films. COLD WAR 2's behind the scene mystery boss was the most suitable for Fat Gor's return to Hong Kong film due to the success of the first film. The big boss was the key figure in the first film. The high ranking police officers have been investigating several cases that were linked to the police force and thought someone was controlling everything behind the scene. Yet this mystery person did not appear in the first film. In COLD WAR 2 the mystery person will appear. The film company hoped to find a great acting superstar for this character. Fat Gor was the most ideal choice. In the sequel he will have to face three good actors Tony Leung Ka Fai, Sing Sing and the newly added Kenneth Tsang Kong. The sequel will be around the newly promoted police commissioner Sing Sing whose wife and child were kidnapped. His wife finally died at the hands of the villains. Sing Sing turned sorrow into strength to battle the behind the scene big boss and convinced the retired former deputy police commissioner Leung Ka Fai to assist. Ka Fai's father Tsang Kong actually was close to the behind the scene big boss as they began a round of battle of wits and power. Director Luk Kim Ching confirmed that the sequel will start production at the end of the year because in the first half he will have to first make a police film for Media Asia. As for whether Fat Gor will play the big boss, he said, "Right now we are already coming up with the sequel script. Will Fat Gor play the big boss? It's best to ask the boss, it's better coming from the boss." How will the sequel develop? He said, "The first film had three major mysteries, the next film will explain them. The first would introduce the behind the scene big boss, this big boss of course had to have a lot of caliber! The second would be the background of the bomb gang, and the third would explain what kind of document the MD57 was." Luk Kim Ching pointed out that at the end of COLD Kwok Fu Sing's wife and child were kidnapped, which the sequel will continue to develop. Because he and Leung Lok Man needed to gather a lot of information to write the sequel script, the film will not start production until the end of the year. Yesterday Fat Soh replied for Fat Gor whether he has taken the role. "We are at very initial contact, the script isn't ready yet. Let's wait until after we read the script! Actually as long as the script is good, we don't mind Hong Kong films, co-productions or U.S. films. This year Fat Gor has several films in negotiation. In April he will first work on Wong Jing's new film. In the second half of the year he will work on an American film." Last November when COLD was in release, Fat Gor went to the movies to see it. He gave a very high rating, praised Sing Sing's drastic acting improvement and looked forward to working with Sing Sing. Actually 3 years ago they already worked together on the Soi Cheang Pou-Soi directed THE MONKEY KING (DAI LAU TIN GUNG) but they did not have many scenes together. They both wanted to find a suitable script to work together again. Finally Edko boss Kong Chi Keung was intended on making this happen for them. * (2013/02/17) Wong Jing yesterday with PRINCESS AND THE SEVEN KUNG FU MASTERS (SIU GUNG CHUN MO LUM) actors Sandra Ng Kwan Yu, Rose Chan Ka Wun, Wong Cho Nam, and Philip Ng Won Lung had their Human Day Lunar New Year meal. The film will be released simultaneously in China and Hong Kong on March 7. Speaking of Stephen Chow Sing Chi's JOURNEY TO THE WEST CONQUERING THE DEMONS (SAI YAU GONG MOR PIN) still being in release then, Wong Jing said, "4 weeks are about right, and the box office wouldn't make as much by the end." As for February 14, JOURNEY's national box office reached 420 million yuan RMB. Wong Jing predicted the final box office would be near 1 billion yuan RMB. Earlier Chow Sing Chi was accused of loving making money more than making movies, Wong Jing said, "I said a long time ago that Chow Sing Chi is a good director! He sold many JOURNEY shares to others, he is very smart. However I am not envious. I have a lot that he doesn't. I have family and children, which he doesn't." Wong Jing said that JOURENY's quality was close to KUNG FU HUSTLE. It accommodated Mainland viewer taste so it was able to win over the Mainland box office. Wong Cho Nam later will have the new film BLACK COMEDY (HAK SIK HEI KET). In April he will have to shave his head for a series and will not have time to promote. Wong Jing said, "After shaving his head he shouldn't use wax at all. After waxing it won't grow back. (Stanley) Fung Shui Fan, (Dicky) Cheung Wai Kin and (Leo) Kui Kui Ke all had problems after using wax." Lee Lik Chi yesterday said online that JOURNEY was very much like Tsui Hark's FLYING SWORDS OF DRAGON GATE (LUNG MOON FEI GAP). He said, "Shu Qi's character is very familiar, Huang Bo claims to be Sun Wukong but the monkey looks different and ugly! How is the ending different from KUNG FU HUSTLE? Again with the giant palm? This time also has a giant leg! However the opening is pretty entertaining! The scene that was made with the most effort was the one! Second at the Hong Kong box office, the film won enough in the Mainland. In comparison to the fishes in the troubled waters now, Sing Yeh of course has much better effort but has been away for too long!" Ng Kwan Yu recalled her kiss in PRINCESS AND SEVEN KUNG FU MASTERS with Eric Tsang Chi as "truly hard to take". She joked, "Chi Wai kissed very seriously and even had several bad takes, he got my face all wet. I treat it like a gift for his 60th birthday!" Was Chi Wai not handsome so she felt it was hard to take? Kwan Yu denied it and said, "I have never liked to make kiss scenes since childhood, yet every time in a comedy I would get nailed." Kwan Yu revealed that during the Lunar New Year many friends paid her a visit and they played all night on several nights. She said, "In the New Year I hope all my husband's movies would make money. When the Man of the House is happy, the atmosphere at home is a little better too." * (2013/02/16) The Stephen Chow Sing Chi directed, Shu Qi participated film JOURNEY TO THE WEST (SAI YAU GONG MOR PIN) yesterday announced online that its Mainland single day box office reached 122 million RMB, which broke the highest Mainland single day box office record. So far its box office reached 418 million RMB. * (2013/02/16) Joyce Cheng Yun Yi, Jacqueline Chong Si Man and Jerry Koo Ming Wa two nights ago attended an audience appreciation event for their film I LOVE HONG KONG 2013 (2013 NGOR OI HK GUNG HEI FAT CHOI). Film company executive Wong Ka Hei even announced the good news that the film passed 10 million after a week in release. Two days ago was Valentine's Day, actors not gave away gifts but also chocolate. However Yun Yi admitted that she did not have a date that evening. Chong Si Man even revealed that someone "backed out" so she was thankful for the audience appreciation to have a chance to go out! Chong Si Man joked, 'Luckily he isn't someone I was interested in, otherwise I definitely wouldn't let him 'back'. (Did rumored boyfriend Ronan Pak Kin Yan ask you out?) No, but he sent a Gung Hoi Fat Choi text message." Yun Yi joked that she very obviously had no date so she was able to attend the event. Perhaps she would go out with Chong Si man to meet guys; when she heard the box office already passed 10 million she stated that she was elated and felt very gratified. She wished luck to anyone who came in contact with this film, unfortunately she got sick on the Lunar New Year's Day. She had to postpone her Lunar New Year visits with her father and Grand Mentor (Lydia Shum Din Ha's mentor" to the weekend. Speaking of INBOUND TROUBLES (LO BIU NEI HO YEH!)'s Chen Jiajia's resemblance to Fei Jeh, Yun Yi said that she has not seen the series yet but they ran into each other at Television City. However she did not have a chance to talk in detail or take a closer look. She felt that she and her mother each have their own specialties. Her mother gave people a mother type impression while Tiny is lively and cute. She was not as cute as them. She even joked that her looks went when she got fatter, so she had to stay in shape in order to make people want to hit her. * (2013/02/15) The film DUE WEST OUR SEX JOURNEY (YUT LO HEUNG SAI)'s director Mark Wu Yiu Fai yesterday was interviewed along with director Philip Yung Tsz Kwong. Speaking of DUE WEST 2, he said that the script was still being worked on but he really would ask former AKB48 member Risa Tachibana. "I contacted her agency, but because they are on holiday I would have to wait a week or two before a reply." Wu Yiu Fai even said that the film will not start production until Autumn for a release next year. * (2013/02/15) Yesterday was Valentine's Day, well known great husbands Simon Yam Tat Wa and Donnie Yen Chi Tan had to helplessly leave their wives behind to work on the film THE ICEMAN COMETH 3D (3D BING FUNG HUP) as they returned from Shanghai and Singapore. Yam Tat Wa said that Shanghai was snowing. Earlier he originally went on a romantic bicycle ride with his wife Qi Qi, but Qi Qi stopped after 2 minutes due to the slippery floor. He revealed plans to give Qi Qi property for a Valentine's Day gift. "A little gift, it's pretty romantic. (Do you give her a small island?) I already have an island, the best is to buy the home next door." Yen Chi Tan gave his wife Cissy Wang a bracelet. When she returns from Singapore he will give her another surprise; did he often give his wife surprises? He said that he would try to and revealed that August will be their tenth anniversary. Thus they planned to renew their wedding vows in tuxedo and wedding gown. "My wife is very envious of other people's beautiful wedding gown. When she wed she was already pregnant. She was displeased with her figure and thought it was not at its best. It also took place in Canada so it was not perfect enough." However, he has not thought about where it will take place. Yen Chi Tan in THE ICEMAN COMETH 3D has many action scenes but they still have not begun shooting yet. The film plans to shoot until mid March, then he will work on an Emperor new film. As for when IP MAN 3D will start production, he said that he still was unsure. "(Wilson) Yip Wai Shun is still writing the script. With so many people working on this character, each with their own angels, THE GRANDMASTERS (YUT DOI JUNG SI) already took 5 years. Without good ideas and production budget, I would rather set it aside. I wouldn't mind waiting 5 years for it either." He has not seen Tony Leung Chiu Wai's THE GRANDMASTERS yet but he was very happy that the film has already broken 20 million at the box office. * (2013/02/15) This year's Lunar New Year film slot has three Hong Kong Lunar New Year films, a foreign films and two animations. they included the Stephen Chow Sing Chi directed JOURNEY TO THE WEST: CONQUERING THE DEMONS (SAI YAU GONG MOR PIN) that everyone has waited 4 years for, as well as the usual Eric Tsang Chi Wai and Raymond Wong Pak Ming style Lunar New Year films and A GOOD DAY TO DIE HARD; yet according to the Hong Kong Motion Picture Industry Association, the from the Lunar New Year's Eve to the Lunar third, the four day total box office was HK$44.07 million. In comparison to last year's 47.06 million, the decline was around 6.34% and the performance was not considered ideal. Among the Lunar New Year films, the Hollywood film A GOOD DAY TO DIE HARD topped the cumulative box office with 18.17 million. As for Chinese films JOURNEY TO THE WEST led with 15.81 million. * (2013/02/15) Eric Tsang Chi Wai, Alan Tam Wing Lun and Veronica Yip Yuk Hing led Stanley Fung Shui Fan, Michael Tse Tin Wa, Bosco Wong Chung Chak, Samantha Ko Hoi Ning, Koni Lui Wai Yi and Joyce Chen Yun Yi to represent their film I LOVE HONG KONG 2013 (2013 NGOR OI HK GUNG HEI FAT CHOI) and greet everyone for the Lunar New Year. Chi Wai in the Lunar New Year continued to be busy with the Lunar New Year film promotion and casino shows. He admitted that as an artist that he was already used to having no time off. In the Year of the Snake, Chi Wai revealed that Shaw has already confirmed to make Lawrence Cheng Tan Shui's new film. This year will be a big birthday year for him and he will be very busy. He had no idea when he would have time to work on a movie, but he has already decided to return to the embrace of THE SUPER TRIO SERIES and planned for the new series to call back all 9 "elders" to return and fulfill his wish. Alan during the Lunar New Year performed with the Wynners in Malaysia, then performed solo in Singapore. He declined to reveal if his son tagged along, but he said that although his son was grown due to laisee he gladly went with him everywhere. Was he in a hurry to meet his future daughter in law? Alan said, "As far as I know, he isn't dating yet. How can I be in a hurry? He should stick with school for now!" Ko Hoi Ning attended Lunar New Year events for a fat New Year. She lamented that this year two series "tied her down" and she was unable to take more jobs to make even more. She hoped that after the new series aired they would bring her even more work. "I am very happy that starting last year I have already made more series, my acting has received recognition. My career isn't just limited to attend events, my career is elevated and not the career line!" * (2013/02/14) Three new film stars Michelle Chen, Ko Chen-Tung and Angelababy became buddies after working together on their new film TOGETHER. Earlier they reunited to promote the film. Working on a movie in Hong Kong for the first time, Michelle said that she would watch Hong Kong films to learn Cantonese since she was little. Originally she thought that working in Hong Kong could improve her Cantonese, but she did not expect the team to speak Mandarin with her. She also revealed that her Cantonese caused a lot of comedy. "Once I made stand up guy sound like dirty guy, everyone cracked up when they heard!" Playing a couple with the strongest in the universe Donnie Yen Chi Tan, she admitted that she admired her co-star. "He is an action actor, but I never imagined that during dramatic scenes when he felt the script had a problem he would speak up!" In addition, for the new film Ko Chen-Tung had to gain 10 kilograms. As for his favorite Hong Kong food, he said it was the street snacks like eggette and shu mai. For the Lunar New Year, Ko Chen-Tung said that he would give laisee to his parents. "Since I have been making money I would automatically give some to Mama, now I am the one who is in a hurry to get a laisee from her!" Playing a couple with Ko Chen-Tung Angelababy revealed that he was very close in behavior, look and age with her younger brother. Thus she felt particularly close. She said, "During the shoot I took special care of her!" She even said that she already introduced Ko Chen-Tung to her brother. * (2013/02/14) The Stephen Chow Sing Chi directed JOURNEY TO THE WEST: CONQUERING THE DEMONS (SAI YAU GONG MOR PIN) was released in Hong Kong on February 7. As of the Lunar third (12th), its cumulative box office was over HK$13 million and crushed the same day releases I LOVE HONG KONG 2013 (2013 NGOR OI HK GUNG HEI FAT CHOI) with its 8.8 million, HOTEL DELUXE (BAK SING JAU DIM) with its 7.4 million and became the Chinese film Lunar New Year box office champion. However, in the total cumulative box office chart, A GOOD DAY TO DIE HARD with over 15 million remained on top of the chart. Meanwhile JOURNEY swept across the Mainland, it opened nationwide on February 10 and after 3 days it made 220 million yuan RMB. Industry insiders estimated that it would have hope to challenge LOST IN THAILAND's 1.3 billion RMB box office. Today is Valentine's Day, Sing Yeh and Shu Qi's loving stare photo has also been unveiled. [ BLAH OF THE WEEK ] Columns, Reviews, Interviews 1. APPLE DAILY, FEBRUARY 19 2013, LARGE PLANNING HONG KONG DIRECTORS VANISH? This is the best of times, it is the worst of times. Hong Kong film once had a glorious history. From the rise of the New Wave to the Golden Age to the dark days, to now co-production replacement, directors were like chief commanders who drove Hong Kong film's fate and direction. Yet with the popularity of co-productions, the words "Hong Kong directors" perhaps would fade with the times. Hong Kong Film Directors' Guild vice chair Gordon Chan Ka Seung happened to have witnessed the rise and fall of Hong Kong film. He felt that Hong Kong directors have to transition. If they want opportunities to achieve, they also have to learn to say no to bosses. - HO WING NING The Hong Kong Film Directors' Guild plans to publish a COMPENDIUM OF HONG KONG DIRECTORS that will list around 600 directors from 1979 to now. The Guild vice chair Chan Ka Seung along with the book's chief editor Wong Kwok Siu earlier were interviewed at the Film Directors' Guild office. Chan Ka Seung wanted everyone to know what made Hong Kong films. He said, "People always talk about Hong Kong films, in the end who makes up Hong Kong films? Hopefully this book can summarize directors who have given an effort to film." The 1979 start was because that was the year that the New Wave films rose. That Wave also inspired Chan Ka Seung to join the industry. He said, "Back then I studied geography overseas and minor in astronomy, which had absolutely to do with film. Once I went to the movies and saw Alex Cheung Kwok Ming's COPS AND ROBBERS (BING JI BING BING), I realized that actually Cantonese film was no longer stuck between the daughter in law and the mother in law. The angle was all new and had a modern aura. I immediately went to Shaw to apply for assistant producer. I remember out of 400 applicants 4 were hired, one of whom is today Digital Broadcasting Corporation's board member Ho Kwok Fai." Taking The Easy Way Out, Copying Left And Right Chan Ka Seung worked on props and as log keeper. The most memorable was being Chang Cheh's assistant producer. He said, "I even remember the movie was called FIVE ELEMENTS NINJAS, I remember it so clearly because I really was very happy." Soon after joining the business he witnessed the Hong Kong film golden age. He said that at the time 9 out of 10 movies made money, but he felt unprecedented fear. He said, "All you have to have is (Andy) Lau Tak Wa's name and a boss would start a production. Nine Production Cheng (Carol Cheng Yui Ling) also appeared. Even directors of photography were being fought over. You could say this period was the best and also the worst. There was a lot of work but very few good movies. If your movies took a long time to make, the boss would ask, 'Why would others take five weeks to finish while you take three months?'" Bosses made money but creators had very little space. Often they were forced to copy. He said, "I have seen a script with 30 scenes that were all film titles, copying here and there until the end." Chan Ka Seung described that was when he was the most afraid. Filmmakers all took the easy way out. No one was willing to edit his first film HEART TO HEARTS (SAM YUN SAI GAI). "Because live sound recording was hard to edit, finally we had to find an apprentice to edit it. It was a chaotic time for Hong Kong film." Co-Productions Lead To Hong Kong Director Transitions Chan Ka Seung continued, "From mid to late 80s, (Peter) Chan Ho Sun, (Derek) Yee Tung Sing and I sat down and discussed what was happening because we couldn't be more scared. Movies were still making money, but we knew that the audience was already very displeased." The film industry later went from thriving to declining until 2003 when China and Hong Kong signed the Closer Economic Partnership Arrangement, Hong Kong film seemed to have found its second spring as co-productions led the charge. Yet speaking of co-productions, most people would shake their head due to preconception. Chan Ka Seung felt that it should neither be a label nor a scourge. He explained, "Hong Kong directors are very smart, they know what Hong Kong people want and what Mainlanders want. Some films are obviously made for Mainland viewers, like my THE FOUR (SEI DAI MING BO). You have to know that Hong Kong directors receive different treatment than Mainland directors. National class directors have to take first class flights, it is a national rule. Even if their movies have no viewer their positions aren't affected. Hong Kong directors without any viewer would not have a job, Hong Kong directors have to consider this. (Ann) Hui On Wa and Wong Kar Wai are the few artists who can survive in this industry." Co-productions have been accused of never changing at all, but Chan Ka Seung felt that this idea has changed in recent years. "Mainland inspection improvements are already often talked about. The change is the ecology is different. In the past co-productions had one formula like cooking. With Zhou Xun and Ge You and a big director the movie would guarantee profit. Now viewers tell you no way. Like last year Feng Xiaogang's 1942, sorry, my life is already very tough so I don't want to go to the movies to watch something as tragic as people eating people. You say Jackie Cha and Jet Li (Lee Nin Kit) would be amazing and a guaranteed profit, which is true, but this is not creativity. Hollywood has the money so it can." Must Learn To Say No To Bosses As Mainland viewers learn to watch movies more and more, big stars and big productions are no longer box office guarantees. Film again returns to the creative industry category, which Chan Ka Seung sees as the way out for co-production films and the opportunity for Hong Kong film. "In terms of ideas, creativity and improvisation, Hong Kong directors are second to none. Getting out of the guaranteed profit framework they are forced to come up with more new ideas. COLD WAR (HONG JIN) and ECHOES OF THE RAINBOW (SHUI YUET SUN TAU) are the best examples." Making Chinese film commercial is the road that directors have to take now. Directors even have to learn to say no to bosses. "Bosses always want everything, you have to know to tell them no. Sometimes you really have to call their bluff. For several of my previous movies I had to slap the table several times and stand up. You have to let them know what viewers want to see and not what the bosses want to see." Chan Ka Seung and Wong Kwok Siu's COMPENDIUM is slated for an end of June release. The bok will have bilingual in both Chinese and English. Wong Kwok Siu said that the difficulty mainly came from the incomplete director information. He said, "Because some directors only had one film, they didn't belong to the Film Directors' Guild and couldn't be reached. Right now this is the problem that needs to be overcome." Chan Ka Seung: Hong Kong Film Dares to Challenge The Powerful Because Hong Kong film drew him into the industry, Chan Ka Seung attempted to define Hong Kong film. He felt that a real Hong Kong film has a strong Hong Kong ideology. He said, "Hong Kong filnm has a particular way of thinking, Mainland criticizes this type of thinking as acclimatization issues. Hong Kong films are lenient about a mixture of Chinese and the West, they are also very subversive and direct. They make whatever they think of without any taboo, as long as bosses are willing to invest. They dare to challenge the powerful and love to suppress the strong to help the weak. They can rarely in movies yell at the government and the police, especially the police. Japan had to wait until the 90s to be more lenient in that area. Thus according to the rules of no bad guy in the Mainland police, no mob and no prostitute, they can't be seen in co-productions." Although recently he mainly directs co-productions, Chan Ka Seung who was raised on Hong Kong films still misses Hong Kong film. Actually he already has a Hong Kong film in mind about Hong Kong during the 1941 occupation, but due to the tension in China and Japan relations the plan was set aside. Little Gossip: Hong Kong Director Records First Hong Kong Director: Lai Man Wai Commonly recognized as the first Hong Kong director, "Father of Film" Lai Man Wai was Gigi Lai Chi's grandfather. In 1913, he and an American founded Hua Mei Film Production made ZHUANGZI TESTS HIS WIFE. He even played the female lead while his wife Yim San San played the supporting role, which made her the first actress in Chinese film history. Li Yi Zhuang and Zhou Cheng Ren in THE FIRST CASE OF THE HONG KONG FILM mentioned that Lai Man Wai's brother Lai Bak Hoi was the real first Hong Kong film director, his contribution to Hong Kong film has also been recognized. First Woman Director: Ng Kam Ha In ancient times China valued men more than women, actresses were already few and far between and female directors were almost nonexistent. The first woman director was Ng Kam Ha who everyone called "Brother Ha". Born in San Francisco, she rent a studio in Hollywood to make the film HEARTACHES (SUM HUN). In 1937, Brother Ha came to Hong Kong to make the film NATIONAL HEROINE (MAN JOOK NUI YING HUNG) and received a Guangdong Woman's Right Advancement Federation commendation. Worthy of mention was her film IT'S A WOMEN'S WORLD (1939) truly had an actual all women production. Highest Box Office Director: Wong Jing Box Office and Awards have no definite correlation. Never won any film award, Wong Jing is already criticized as rotten film king. He actually is the director with the highest box office, proving that rotten films have their market value as well. In 2005 UA cinema circuit conducted a survey. For over 20 years, Wong Jing directed over 80 films and his total box office was around 1.03 billion. When he won he said that as a director he had to have the courage to face the box office pressure. He only wanted to make movies that could make movie. First Cannes Best Director: Wong Kar Wai Cannes is a lucky place for Wong Kar Wai. In 1997 he with the film HAPPY TOGETHER (CHUN GUONG JA SIT) won the Cannes Best Director to become the first Chinese to win the honor. The film on the surface was about Tony Leung Chiu Wai and Leslie Cheung Kwok Wing as a gay couple while profiling Hong Kongers' mentality before and after Hong Kong Hand over. Thus the film's victory before the Hand Over had deep meaning. In 2006, Wong Kar Wai was invited to be the Cannes Film Festival jury chair, again the first Chinese to receive the honor. Oldest Director: Wu Peng Speaking of Wu Peng, everyone would remember Wong Fei Hung because he was the founder of the Wong Fei Hung film series (1949). In his lifetime he directed 59 Wong Fei Hung films. Wu Peng was also the oldest Hong Kong director. In 1980, he directed THE LUCKIEST TRIO (AH FUK YU TO LO) that starred George Lam Chi Cheung and Mag Lam Kin Ming. at the time he was already 71. Speaking of which, Wu Peng was also the first director to shoot an underwater scene (HOW WONG FEI HUNG THRICE CAPTURES SO SHU LIM IN THE WATER, 1956) The Youngest Director: Clarence Ford A director has to keep an eye on the big picture, which on certain level requires a certain life experience. Clarence Ford (Fok Yiu Leung) at age 18 was already a television director. With Chor Yuen as his mentor, in 1981 when he directed his first film ON TRIAL (SUK YIP SUN, starring Leslie Cheung Kwok Wing and Danny Chan Pak Keung) he was only 23. Actually he had an unusual childhood. When he was in fourth grade his father declared bankruptcy. He worked as child labor and made HK$44 monthly to pay for school. The youngest female director was Heiward Mak Hei Yan. In 2008 she directed HIGH NOON (LIT YUT DONG HUNG), at the time she was only 24. The First 1 Million Box Office Director: Chan Jing Bo The first director with a million at the box office was not the famous Shaw director Chang Cheh with THE ONE ARMED SWORDSMAN (DIK BEI DOH, 1967) but the Chan Jing Bo directed, Phoenix production martial art action romance GOLDEN EAGLE (GUM YING, 1964) that starred Kao Yuen and Zhu Hong and was shot on location in Mongolia. The first documentary that passed 1 million at the box office was the Lo Kwan Hung directed WATER COMES OVER THE HILLS FROM THE EAST (DONG GONG JI SHUI YUET SAN LOI) about the Hong Kong drought. On March 1965 when Mainland provided water to Hong Kong, the film was released simultaneously and became the talk of the town. The First Category III Director: T.F. Mou Tun Fei On November 10 1988, Hong Kong's three category rating system took effect as people under the age of 18 could not see a category III film. The first Hong Kong film to receive the category III rating was the cult film king T.F. Mou Tun Fei directed BLACK SUN (HAK TAI YEUNG 731). The film was released on December 1 1988. It was about the Japanese Kwantung Army Unit 731 that conducted human experiments in Harbin. The film was full of grotesque scenes like cruel Chinese torture, live cat tossed into a group of starving rats and rat burning. Its release caused tremendous controversy. 2. MING PAO DAILY, FEBRUARY 17 2013, FILM WORDS JOURNEY TO THE WEST DARK HUMOR How was the cinema business during the Year of the Snake Lunar New Year holiday? According to the Hong Kong Motion Picture Industry Association, from the Lunar New Year's Eve to the Lunar 3rd the total box office was over HK$44 million, which was decently but no match for last year's over 47 million. Looking back, the Lunar New Year once was the most thriving period for the Hong Kong film market for a long time. In the past decade or so Christmas has gradually overtaken it. Originally the best performing Hong Kong Lunar New Year films have already been crushed at the hands of big Hollywood films. This time Hollywood's A GOOD DAY TO DIE HARD topped the box office and now has already exceeded 20 million. In second place was the Stephen Chow Sing Chi film JOURNEY TO THE WEST CONQUERING THE DEMONS (SAI YAU GONG MOR PIN). The other two Hong Kong films I LOVE HONG KONG 2013 (2013 NGOR OI HK GUNG HEI FAT CHOI) and HOTEL DELUXE (BAK SING JAU DIM) finally passed the 10 million mark but were obviously no match for foreign films. The Hong Kong Lunar New Year film has even less novelty. HOTEL DELUXE (BAK SING JAU DIM) was a mismatched mixed bag, I LOVE HONG KONG 2013 (2013 NGOR OI HK GUNG HEI FAT CHOI) was rough and antiquated. The more they made the more they declined. In comparison, the Stephen Chow Sing Chi directed but not starred JOURNEY TO THE WEST CONQUERING THE DEMONDS (SAI YAU GONG MOR PIN) (Derek Kwok Chi Kin co-directed) returned to the old well as well, its computer special effects were superficial and pale in comparison to his previous films SHAOLIN SOCCER (SIU LUM JOOK KAU) and KUNG FU HUSTLE (GONG FU). Luckily it was not simple minded and cooked up a lot of dark humor. The biggest specialty was the Venerable Monk Tang before monkhood was the lead. He was a straight laced guy, unlike the focus of other JOURNEY TO THE WEST films Sun Wukong. Wen Zhang as the sloppy haired "demon conqueror" Tang innocently dipped his toes into the demon world and finally discovered the Zen Buddhism in 300 CHILDREN SONGS. In his middle age Chow Sing Chi has gradually become wonderfully and was no longer stuck in his off the chain monkey stage. In the film the Monkey King (Huang Bo) became a bored and sly old guy, with the water monster Sand Monk and the pretty boy Piggy, Heavenly Kick and Lonely Gentleman the film weird and strange. The liveliest was Shu Qi as the demon conquering heroine who fell for Tang. In the entire film she was the most loving and had the most comedy feel. In addition, particularly cute was the obedience charm and the flubbed blood spray. Despite how exaggerated and grotesque they were, they were rather hilarious. I still feel JOURNEY TO THE WEST itself is so full of mystery and wonder that it does not need to be modified. Actually its original material alone can be made into international level fantasy epic. Unfortunately the Chinese film industry so far still has not been able to make an ideal authentic JOURNEY TO THE WEST movie. Perhaps it will required a Hollywood production. (Two and a half out of five stars) - SHEK KEI 3. APPLE DAILY, FEBRUARY 14 2013, VALENTINE'S DAY SPECIAL DUMPING MICHELLE CHEN, KO CHEN-TUNG SWITCHES TO HONG KONG GIRL Today is Valentine's Day, the goddess who is in a wedding gown again Michelle Chen, the no longer self pleasuring Ko Chen-Tung and Hong Kong representative Angelababy earlier promoted their new film TOGETHER. Michelle BB kept on practicing Cantonese to win over Hong Kong fans, while Angelababy revealed that Ko Chen-Tung was just as bashful on and off camera. Director Clarence Ford (Fok Yiu Leung) broke apart Ko Chen-Tung and Michelle Chen in the new film TOGETHER as they fell for Angelbaby and the strongest in the universe Donnie Yen Chi Tan. Ko Chen-Tung, Michelle Chen and Baby earlier avoided talking about their own relationships in their interview, seemingly love was an artist's biggest weak spot. Michelle Chen this time played a Hong Kong woman who lost her memory after an accident. She said, "I only remembered to look for my fiance, but Big Brother Chi Tan appeared and even became my guardian angel." Yen Chi-Tan this time played a traffic cop who due to "facial expression loss disorder" had no expression. His image scared Michelle Chen. Ko Chen-Tung in the film also played a cop who fell for the gold worshipping Hong Kong woman Baby. After working with two great goddesses and stuck between two women he said, "Being able to work with two of everyone's goddesses of course is very happy and very pleasant, Baby truly performs like a Hong Kong woman." Baby Makes Fun of Shy Guy Baby received praised from her co-star but revealed that Ko Chen-Tung was actually a shy guy who did not warm up easily. "The first time we met I wanted to chat with him but he was so shy that he didn't dare to talk to me." Ko Chen-Tung explained, "I warm up really slowly with others." Playing the gold worshipping Hong Kong woman, Baby had to secretly observed "examples" to get into character. "I had to find some blue prints and original forms for research then study them in depth." [ In Production Now/Soon ] HARDCORE COMEDY Can : Chong Hau Mei Lit : Heavy Flavor d.
