Jackie Chan pointed out that he considered Gong Li and Michelle Yeoh (Yeung Chi King) for the "Dai Soh" character in the film, but in order to bring more surprise, he asked his retired film star wife Joan Lin (Lam Fung Giu) to guest star. At first she declined and said that she was not used to working on the set. Jackie Chan asked her again and promised to only shoot her back. She finally agreed. The last scene that was shot in the entire film was Lam Fung Giu's appearance. To accommodate her the original set in the Beijing studio was made again in Hong Kong. Everyone was ready before she was invited to appear, finally after more than half a day she appeared and only worked on 3 shots. She insisted on only displaying her back on camera, but finally Jackie Chan forced her to turn around. * (2012/12/11) The Chow Yun Fat starred THE LAST TYCOON (DAI SEUNG HOI) held premieres in Hong Kong and Singapore, attracted many industry supporters and received decent word of mouth. Directors like Wilson Chin Kwok Wai, Felix Chong Man Keung and others praised the film as attractive and mesmerizing. Chin Kwok Wai lamented, "I haven't seen a big movie that felt like A BETTER TOMORROW (YING HUNG BOON SIK). The glory of Fat Gor with guns......Great!" Director Wong Jing was very pleased to receive industry recognition. "When they like it, I am happy." Fat Gor personally performed many stunts in the film and even said they were a lot of fun. Actually Wong Jing not only spared no effort in ideas on the screen but also was rather demanding even with the theme song as the Jacky Cheung Hok Yau performed song recently has landed at the top of many music charts. Takki Wong Yeuk Kei's song was responsible for "tear jerking" and hopefully would be able to coordinate with the movie and create a pleasant surprise for fans of the movie. * (2012/12/11) Charlie Yeung Choi Nei's first film as a director CHRISTMAS ROSE will be released in the first season next year. Recently she has been working on its post production and commuting between Hong Kong and Beijing. Though being busy made her thin, she rather enjoyed the process. She hoped to be able to take a few days off for Christmas and rest overseas. Was she afraid of neglecting her boyfriend, Yeung Choi Nei played coy and said, "Don't ask me about this. Right now I am focused on the film's post production. All my friends want me to make the movie great, then I will invite everyone to watch it." Yeung Choi Nei has been busy with the film and reduced her job negotiations, but she did not mind. "Making money is not the most important. I enjoy doing something that I want to do very much." She did not mind the difficulty of working behind the scene. As long as she had a good story she would direct again. * (2012/12/09) Renee Lee Wan and Jacqueline Chong Si Man yesterday appeared at a new sushi store opening promotion. Chong Si Man took part in Eric Tsang Chi Wai's Lunar New Year film, in which she played Veronica Yip Yuk Hing's daughter in law. She praised Hing Hing. "Hing Hing plays my mother in law, Wong Cho Nam my husband. Sister Hing is an elder but is very nice, not arrogant at all. At the set she is very talkative and chatted with us like she was one of us. I also see how much she love her children, she is a great Mommy." * (2012/12/09) Chow Yun Fat, Francis Ng Chun Yu, Yolanda Yuan Quan, Monica Mok Siu Kei, Tong Fei, Andrew Lau Wai Keung, and Wong Jing two nights ago attended the film THE LAST TYCOON (DAI SEUNG HOI) premiere. Huang Xiaoming due to his leg injury was absent. Chun Yu in Fat Gor's presence became a fan. He not only bowed to him but also chok for a photo face to face. Chun Yu said, "I am afraid to lose to my idol, but Fat Gor definitely wins!" Fat Gor said that he still had to lose over 10 pounds in order to work with Nicholas Tse Ting Fung next year. He said, "In mid January Ting Fung and I will work on Wong Jing's Hong Kong film that is like GOD OF GAMBLERS (DOH SUN). Ting Fung is very thin, I have to lose weight." Fat Gor is a famous "television addict". Did he have favorites for Best Actor and Best Actress? He said, "The favorites are (Wayne) Lai Yiu Cheung and (Myolie) Wu Hung Yi. I watch (Tavia) Yeung Yi's later stuff more. (Kate) Tsui Tsz Shan I didn't watch until the finale. Her drug abuse performance is pretty good." Did he watch Tsui Tsz Shan's rape scene? Fat Gor joked, "It was very little (short), Yeung Yi's rape was a big longer and had lip biting." Did he not like Damien Lau Chung Yan's chances to win Best Actor? Fat Gor said, "Great! Why not? However he isn't a biological son." Raymond Lam Fung is a "biological son" (TVB artist) so he will definitely win? Fat Gor did not respond and instead asked, "Isn't Lai Yiu Cheung a biological son?" Fat Gor felt that the Best Supporting Actor Award was between So Gay and Sam Shun (Jerry Koo Ming Wa, Chan Kwok Bong). He said, "Performing Art Academy vs. Performing Art Academy. Best Supporting Actress favorite is (Elena) Kong Mei Yi. Is she a biological daughter?" As for the numerous incidents in show business recently, Fat Gor only joked that (Eric Tsang) Chi Wai constantly got drunk. Chun Yu told a friend that he worked with Fat Gor on a movie but he played a villain. His friend joked that if he did not play the villain what would be left for him to do. Fat Gor joked, "Then next time I will play the villain." Chun Yu said that he was not worthy of that and was afraid that the audience would not accept that. He continued, "Fat Gor is fitter and fitter, I too am a lot thinner. Because when I was working overseas on TRIUMPH IN THE SKIES II I wasn't used of the Western nations' food and time difference, I lost 10 pounds." However he denied that he "did not get a good meal" while working on the TVB series. Speaking of his online arguments with Wu Hung Yi's fans, he said, "They came over to my place and said something that was not related to TRIUMPH IN THE SKIES II. The opinions that they expressed should be discussed in their own place. I wanted every post to be cleaner." Huang Xiaoming due to his leg injury was unable to attend the premiere in Hong Kong. He expressed his regret through video. In a wheel chair he humorously said, "This look of mine is a salute to Fat Gor's ONCE A THIEF (JUNG WAN SEI HOI)." Fat Gor joked, "ONCE A THIEF had 'wires', he didn't have any 'wire'." * (2012/12/08) The Emperor Motion Picture, Jackie Chan Productions and Huayi Brothers joint release CZ12 will soon open. Big Brother Jackie Chan worked on the film on a mysterious island and ran into a large lizard. Big Brother invited it to guest star. Jackie Chan joked that on the set he had "many strokes of genius". Not only hand grenades, machine guns, rockets were used as comedy props, but on the mysterious island he also ran into a giant lizard that was silly looking and very tame. As Jackie Chan approached it, the lizard did not dodge and slowly went about its own way. Jackie Chan then daringly picked it up, much to the surprise of everyone. Yet this lizard let Jackie Chan pick it up like a kitten. Later other actors like Yao Xingtong and Laura Weissbecker were not afraid either as they took turns to embrace the lizard. Finally Jackie Chan even gave it a cameo in the film! Speaking of the production, Big Brother admitted that it was very tough because he indeed pushed all the actors to their limits. Whenever he was able to do everyone had to be able to do. To display the shock of the treasure hunt, Jackie Chan made the interior designs their best. In the Mainland a 100 year old ship was constructed in a 5,000 square meter studio. He said, "Such a large studio is very rare, luckily a good friend is making a movie and heard about my need. He backed out and said Big Brother you shoot first. Living up to the audience expectation, making movies with diligence and details are the secret of my success over the years!" * (2012/12/08) The film YOUNG AND DANGEROUS: RELOADED (GOO WAT JAI: GONG WU SUN DIT JUI) two nights ago wrapped up production with Sammy Sum Chun Hin. Producer Wong Jing produced Sum Chun Hin's performance could rival Francis Ng Chun Yu's. Denise Ho Wan Si as Sister 13 is even more convincing and he might make a spin off movie with Sister 13. Wong Jing said that THE LAST TYCOON (DAI SEUNG HO) will open a week before YOUNG and he will not compete against himself. He said, "As for THE GRANDMASTERS (YUT DOI JUNG SI), after several dozens years of fighting should I still be afraid? Wong Kar Wai every time says that he is great, I will worry about him when the movie is actually released!" Sum Chun Hin luckily did not see Ng Chun Yu's version of his character until very late, otherwise the outstanding performance would definitely affect him. He said, "This morning I just got the notice to shoot the ending again. The previous ending hopefully will be in the DVD. Although I have a double this time, my arm will still be on fire. Earlier S.H.E. had an accident, fire is more dangerous." * (2012/12/08) Coco Lee Man yesterday attended a magazine award ceremony. Tony Leung Ka Fai accepted the award and after the event quickly left. Lee Man said that as soon as she saw Leung Ka Fai, she would be reminded of his revealing scene in the film THE LOVER. "At the time I was quite a fan. He is handsome and friendly. Back stage I asked him for parenthood advice. Next year I will release a new record. I am ready to be a mother because the record is my baby too." Donnie Yen Chi Tan is busy with his new film THE ICEMAN COMETH 3D (BING FUNG HUP). Reportedly the lead actress is Eva Huang Shengyi. He will not have time to spend Christmas with his wife Cissy Wang and their children. "My wife hasn't complained, but the children are constantly complaining. I wasn't able to attend my son's performance at school." He is planning a family vacation in the U.S. in the summer. Will his older son tag along? Yen Chi tan said, "I am making plans. Because he is in school I have to see whether he can accommodate." * (2012/12/07) Charlene Choi Cheuk Yin and Dior Cheng Yi Kin in the Universe new film MY SASSY HUBBY (NGOR LO GUNG NG SUN SING) played a couple that has been married for years. The film was shot on location in Queensland, Australia and received the local tourism bureau's sponsorship. Ah Sa said, "Last year I went there for a photo book shoot. The location was truly very pretty and very suitable for the ending of the film. So I recommended it for everyone to go again!" Upon her return, Ah Sa said that she felt very relaxed. "Around 4PM I would already feel very sleepy. I listened to the sound of the waves and was very relaxed. There I didn't have any phone reception at all, it's exactly like a paradise. I didn't have a care in the world and no trouble at all!" In the ending, Ah Sa wore shorts and a tank top with snorkeling gear, but because the production was rushed and the local storm season, she and Ekin were unable to dive in the Great Barrier Reef. They both screamed, "What a shame!" * (2012/12/07) Just announced to be a father soon, Daniel Wu (Ng Yin Cho) in the Lu Chuan directed Emperor Motion Picture THE LAST SUPPER (WONG DIK SING YIN) played for the first time a historical figure Xiang Yu. Daniel said that this was a very memorable experience. "Most of the characters I played before were fictional characters. Now I am playing an actual historical figure, Chinese history should be a required lesson! When my children grow up I can tell them their father once played Xiang Yu." Because the Hegemon King of Western Chu Xiang Yu looked very dominating, the director in order to bring the history back to life went to the museums to capture all the historical relics on film and created the costumes a new with ancient clothes making methods. Daniel in the armor looked heroic, but actually everyday he spent a hour to change into the costume. He said, "The armors and the costume weighed 20 kilograms, every time I put them on or took them off I needed 45 minutes. So I wore them all day long into the night and tried not to remove them until work ended. During the shoot I was almost one with them." Five years since BLOOD BROTHERS (TIN TONG HAU), Daniel finally had the chance to work with Liu Ye and Chang Chen again. He said that the reunion was fate and felt that they each had a sense of steadiness. Their acting also showed maturity. * (2012/12/07) The Anthony Wong Chau Sun and Joey Leung Cho Hiu starred play ENIGMA VARIATIONS two nights ago began its run at the Performing Art Academy. Once linked in rumors with Chau Sun, Koni Lui Wai Yi attended with her husband Dickson Wong Man Dik. Lui Wai Yi said, "The media made up the rumor. Chau Sun invited me and my husband to attended, later I will take him to dinner alone. He is like both a mentor and a friend to me!" Lui Wai Yi two nights ago worked overnight on the Lunar New Year film I LOVE HONG KONG 2013 (NGOR OI HK 2013 GUNG HEI FAT CHOI) and ran into Veronica Yip Yuk Hing in the make up room. She said, "Sister Hing Hing is very pretty and very young before make up. Already a mother of 3 she is still very well maintained. In winter clothes she is still so thin and has a great figure, she is hotter than me!" * (2012/12/07) In the film THE GUILLOTINES (HUET DIK JI) Shawn Yue Man Lok and Ethan Juan (Yuen King Tin) have many brotherly scenes. Their characters' ambiguous relationship was difficult for them. They joked that the Andrew Lau Wai Keung designed dialogues were too gross and made them nauseous. Ah Lok in the film played a palace official who looked very cool in an interrogation scene with Siu Tin, but he accidentally fell and became the laughing stock. Even the horse made fun at Ah Lok's expense. When he rode a horse across a stream, the horse acted up and stopped in the middle of the stream. He was submerged in the cold water as if nothing happened until the director yelled cut. Then he could not help but screamed, "I am freezing to death!" * (2012/12/06) Veronica Yip Yuk Hing, Alan Tam Wing Lun, Anthony Chan Yau, Peng Kin Sun and the "Hong Kong style Psy" Wilson Chin Kwok Wai yesterday worked on the Lunar New Year film I LOVE HONG KONG 2013 (NGOR OI HK 2013 GUNG HEI FAT CHOI) at the Shaw Studio. Producer Eric Tsang Chi Wai was present to supervise. In the story banker Chin Kwok Wai went to collect from restaurant boss Tam Wing Lun who co-signed for a friend "Wong Ngai Gei". Alan's wife Hing Hing immediately made her displeasure known to him and even immediately puffed out her chest to threaten him! During the shoot, Hing Hing saw the "counterfeit Psy" and excitedly took photos with him. She said that her children's favorite was Psy but they watched the Hong Kong version more times than the original. Working with Hing Hing for the first time, Tam Wing Lun looked hilarious. He joked that Bak Leung Gum cut his hair and the style was called "Lok Leung Boon" (Six Ounce Half)! Guest starring in a comedy after so many years, Hing Hing admitted that comedy was hard. She was nervous and had a lot of pressure from all the media coverage. "At first I thought since I came to play and work part time, I wouldn't have much pressure. I never expected to regret it after I took it because I had to put down the children. However so far I rather enjoy it. (Would you make another film if the acting bug grows?) When the acting bug acts up of course I would, but the schedule has to be accommodating. Even if I am willing, I don't want to bother others if I perform poorly." Hing Hing said that she was the happiest about being with her mother who suffered from hemiplegia. She said, "When I came back before I came with a big group of people. I didn't stay too long in Hong Kong. Thus over the decade there I only saw Mommy at one or two dinners. After having my son she hasn't come to the U.S. for nine years. In the past half a year her health has been very poor and she had a stroke. She is almost 90, I have to cherish our time together more." * (2012/12/06) The film THE LAST TYCOON (DAI SEUNG HOI) earlier held its premiere at the Singapore Film Festival. Chow Yun Fat and his wife, Yolanda Yuan Quan and Feng Wenjuan along with producer Andrew Lau Wai Keung and director Wong Jing were among the attendees. Huang Xiaoming was absent due to his leg injury. Fat Gor had quite a flair, even with Fat Soh next to him he still openly flirted with girls. Fat Gor in the film had relationship scenes with Yuan Quan and Monica Mok Siu Kei. When a female reporter asked him about the romantic scene experience, he jokingly publicly "wrote a ticket" and asked her to leave her card. He would call her for a candle lit chat at night. Fat Gor is a Singapore son in law. When he promoted in Singapore he joked that he hid in the hotel. He did not dare to go out because he was afraid that he did not treat his wife well enough normally and was worried that his wife would find someone to avenge her. Fat Soh was used to Fat Gor's jokes. When asked about how she felt about her husband's intimate scenes, she helplessly said that she did not mind. Fat Gor said that at first he was anxious that viewers would not like THE LAST TYCOON, when the film ended with thunderous applause he finally breathed a sigh of relief. He bowed to the audience in appreciation. Fat Gor said that the most exciting scene during the shoot was the Nanjing Road explosion scene, with a plane fly over and the scene was as grand as a firework display. During his kiss scene with Yuan Quan he felt the heat like the one from the explosion scene. He enjoyed that very much as well. In the film he had many crying scenes. Female viewers were moved to tears too. As for praises for his convincing performance, Fat Gor joked that because the set was filled with smoke, his eyes teared up. In addition the director said that this scene was very important, if he did not perform well he would not receive the rest of his payment. Thus he could only cry with all his might. * (2012/12/06) The Jackie Chan film CZ12 will open on December 20. Yesterday CZ12 held a Guinness World Record announcement in Shanghai. The Guinness World record Chinese regional chief came to Shanghai to present two Guinness World Record certificates to Jackie Chan for "Most Stunts by a Living Actor" and "Most Credits in One Movie". Jackie Chan said that in CZ12 he was challenged with a volcano jump, which was shot on location; his friend Wang Zhonglei complained about how much risk Jackie Chan took with his life, threatening him and others in charge and giving them no peace. Jackie Chan in CZ12 had 15 credits and displayed his true superman nature. He was the executive producer, the producer, the director, the star, the screen writer, the action director, the cinematographer, the art director, the production assistant, the life producer, lighting, music, props, stunt double and theme song performer. Jackie Chan said that he was not super human, he just focused on making his career the best. The potential that he had exceeded his own imagination. * (2012/12/06) Time Magazine announced its 10 best films of the year. Ang Lee's LIFE OF PI came in third and Peter Chan Ho Sun's WU XIA came in eighth. 15 years ago Chan Ho Sun's COMRADES ALMOST A LOVE STORY (TIM MUK MUK) was in the top ten as well. Chan Ho Sun was surprised to hear the news because WU XIA has been seen as a bomb that even made him question himself. Chan Ho Sun said that WU XIA's box office did not reach 200 million, its performance was quite distant from its expectation. The reviews outside were quite polarized as well, as negative reviews made him question himself. At first he thought that he found the road that was suitable for him to make a wu xia film, but in the end the general public did not agree and made him whom was always self confident to feel that he had too high of an opinion of himself. He said that he could lose the money and the movies, but he could not lose the person. The failure of WU XIA was an indisputable fact, because as long as one viewer disliked this film it was a failure. Now with the Time Magazine recognition, he was also relieved. He said that 15 years ago COMRADES ALMOST A LOVE STORY was selected as one of the 10 Best Films and brought attention to him for these 15 years. This selection of WU XIA, the film that warms his heart but also breaks his heart the most, was quite meaningful as well. * (2012/12/06) Tony Leung Chiu Wai, Zhang Ziyi and Chang Chen starred in the Wong Kar Wai directed THE GRANDMASTERS (YUT DOI JUNG SI). Earlier in part one of THE ROAD TO THE GRANDMASTERS everyone saw how hard they trained, some online even praised Leung Chiu Wai for being willing to drop his big star halo and learn martial art from the start despite being a Best Actor. Yesterday THE ROAD TO THE GRANDMASTERS part two was released online. Viewers were able to see Leung Chiu Wai's training with Wing Chun master Ip Man's final personally trained disciple Mr. Leung Siu Hung. Over 3 years of tough training, Leung Chiu Wai already had a solid martial art structure and powerful attacks. He was able to cleanly break through a several inch thick wooden board. His improvement was shocking. Master Leung said, "Leung Chiu Wai's advantage is that he has no burden or bad habits from any other kung fu, gradually he is able to absorb the spirit of Wing Chun." Wong Kar Wai too said, "I hope the Leung Chiu Wai played Mr. Ip is a mix of Ip Man and Bruce Lee. I have to break everything on him and shape a person anew." * (2012/12/06) Alan Tam Wing Lun two nights ago was a guest at the Share of the Joy of A Wish 2012 event. Alan will participate in the Lunar New Year film I LOVE HONG KONG 2013 (NGOR OI HK 2013 GUNG HEI FAT CHOI). Producer Eric Tsang Chi Wai arranged for him to play a couple with Veronica Yip Yuk Hing in her return to film. Has he gone over the script with Yip Yuk Hing yet? Alan revealed, "We don't have a script! You know Mr. Tsang is always changing, always editing, even if we have a script it is useless." He pointed out that at first he did not know he would be working with Yip Yuk Hing. He was attracted to the project mainly because Chi Wai said he hoped to work with him and Nat Chan Pak Cheung and make a movies as the "three gods". However he also thought that getting Yip Yuk Hing would be talked about and was a good thing. [ BLAH OF THE WEEK ] Columns, Reviews, Interviews . APPLE DAILY, DECEMBER 9 2012, ELECTRIC FILM ROAD OLD FUNG'S SOB STORY Feng Xiaogang as one of the "100 million yuan box office director" has an exceptional position in the Mainland. Long ago with his films DREAM FACTORY, BE THERE OR BE SQUARE and SORRY BABY he created the Mainland Christmas golden slot. Money making has no more or less, just ethical or unethical. As the Mainland society constantly only values, businessmen put ethics aside just like the people who got rich over a national disaster in Director Feng's new film 1942. He not only did not avoid the subject but also unraveled it in hopes of figuring out a reason through the film. Director Feng joked that the film took 18 years of planning and he has already become Old Fung. The reason that he insisted on making it was because he wanted to bring the great famine in Henan during the War Against Japanese Aggression in 1942 to the audience, making people experience the pain of the era and learning about themselves and their nations from it. - MAN KWOK CHUN, LO PING Mainland director Feng Xiaogang earlier brought his new film 1942 to promote in Hong Kong and was interviewed. He said many times before that making 1942 was his dream, from coming in contact with the original novel to now he planned for 18 years. He said, "As all those years passed, I went from the young man Little Fung to now Old Fung. As I grew older, I had even more knowledge of life and richer angles of event descriptions. In addition nowadays viewers can accept more and more, so now indeed is the best opportunity to make the dream come true." Director Feng explained the reason that he persisted for years to make this movie. "When SCHLINDER'S LIST was made, Jews never asked why it was made because even their children knew what tragedy took place back then. Yet the 1942 disaster was even uncertain to Chinese people like ourselves. So I want to remind people of this tragedy in which over 3 million people were starved to death. Actually as soon as the film was released it led to many discussions of the tragedy. Its meaning is great, which is also what I was after." The Screenplay Attracted Two Best Actors Director Feng said in the film were scenes in which people ate people and some sold their relatives as merchandise. Because when the disaster erupted, many people's emotions became numb. The writer pointed out that now the Mainland society also has many businessmen who have buried their conscience. Director Feng attempted to explain the reason behind the appearance of this situation. He said, "For over 100 years the strong has bullied China, which was particularly poor. Interpersonal relations were especially tense, displaying extreme selfishness and sights so short that they could only see the benefits in front of them. When everything spread a lot of incredible things appear today, a lot of unethical things. Businesses have no bottom line at all as they only care about making money, which has a source from which they rooted." Would he feel sorry for such a society? Director Feng did not directly answer and only stated that he had to think and warn about these events. He also said, "Thus I always say movie is a mirror, you can objectively see yourself. It would have flaws that you have to know before you can overcome them. You cannot be blind and egoistical." 1942 not only had Mainland substance actors like Xu Fan, Zhang Hanyu, Zhang Guoli and Chen Daoming but also invited two Best Actor Hollywood actors Adrien Brody and Tim Robbins to guest star as a report and a priest. However their roles were smaller. Director Feng praised their professionalism because they did not ask for more screen time as Best Actors. He said, "The screenplay attracted them. They took very little salary and knew that their roles weren't large. They came alone and without much pageantry. Adrien said that if he attended an event or a party he might have an entourage, but he couldn't when he made a movie because he was a professional actor and not a star." Director Feng also praised every actor like Zhang Hanyu and Zhang Guoli for playing their role just right and completely meeting his demands. Shooting In Order Makes the Actors More Focused Director Feng also revealed a production method that was high cost but helped the cast to get into characters even more -- shooting in order, in other words shooting according the order of the story development. The advantage was actors could easily get into character. Of course the costs were the expensive props and set expenses. He said, "Our entire film was shot in order, which made getting into characters easier for the actors. I have never tried it before because the cost would be much higher. Yet this time I feel 1942 is completely worth it." When money can resolve problems, problems no longer exist. Director Feng since DREAM FACTORY would schedule his movies for December release. This slot that was completely ignored in the Mainland film industry before today has already become the golden slot that everyone would fight over. Xu Fan Jokingly Calls Her Performance Dumb In 1942, Xu Fan continued her tragedy as a mother. Yet this time the pain differed from performing in her husband Feng Xiaogang's previous film AFTER SHOCK, because the earthquake was momentary but war and famine lasted a very long time. Xu Fan played a refugee on the run with her starving children, an ordinary character. Director Feng did not give any special instruction, just for her to be thinner to look like a famine victim. Because of her weight loss she had an even more direct experience. Xu Fan said, "Before the shoot I was thinking about how to play the role, then Feng Xiaogang asked me to be thinner. In a month I lost 10 catty. I fasted and starved myself to perform and experienced the emotions of a famine victim. This was the dumbest yet the most direct performance method. Chinese people used to suffer a lot, as I performed my emotions became very heavy." Feng Xiaogang was both her director and her husband. As she journeyed along with him, Xu Fan felt that he has matured. "For this movie he planned for 18 years, which can tell you how important it is to him. When the production had a problem, he would be frustrated but often he would be very relaxed. This has something to do with a person's maturity." Feng Xiaogang's expertise was comedy, but he loved to cast his wife in suffering characters. Xu Fan joked, "Because I can play them well, and I have nowhere to complain to." Zhang Hanyu's Tragic Preaching Zhang Hanyu in 1942 played a conflicted missionary. He said that originally in the film he even had a tragic ending, because due to the length of the film it was cut. With more scenes with Zhang Hanyu, Tim Robbins who played a priest had even more scenes cut. Zhang Hanyu felt that was quite regrettable. "Being able to work with him was a honor. When we got together we didn't need to say too much. He is a great actor. Regrettably his role has been cut to only a little bit." Zhang Hanyu felt that 1942 gave him a new experience. "People in a variety of disasters would become very small. If they can even do the simplest thing like eating, the rest is no longer a subject. Now everyone's days are easier, they waste more and cherish less. I hope everyone would learn to cherish." Zhang Hanyu reportedly spent some time to learn English with a Henan accent. He corrected, "Speaking English anywhere it is still English. When I am with the priest naturally you would feel I have a little accent, I don't have to speak it fluently. Yet I spent two months to learn the Henan accent." Unveiling the Great Famine Tragedy In 1942 during the War against Japanese Aggression, a great famine erupted in the Henan Province that killed over 3 million people. At the time the rich and the poor had no difference, the land lord like the farmers had to flee with his entire family. The Kuomintang government in order to stay out of it falsely claimed that Henan fell into Japanese military's hands and gave up of providing relief. An America reporter in order to find out the truth personally visited the disaster area and witness the cruel condition of cannibalism. 2. MING PAO DAILY, DECEMBER 9 2012, FILM WORDS CHINA FAMINE TRAGEDY As the year comes to an end, the Christmas and New Year peak slot has not yet arrived but this week provides many entertaining choices among new films. 1942: Well Intentioned Mainland hit director Feng Xiaogang's epic 1942 is extremely tragic and has even more conscience and sincerity than his previous film AFTER SHOCK, as he brings back the frequent but often forgotten famine in Chinese history. The screen writer is the original work's creator Liu Zhenyun. The film depicts in 1942 during the War against Japanese Aggression the famine that erupted in the Henan Province. A massive amount of refugees fleed, as many were starved and bombed to death. The realism is very strong. In the first half the famine victims revolted, the battle when the bandits surrounded the land lord's mansion was very bloody and terrifying. The main fleeing from the famine was like hell on earth, both the rich and the poor had to sell their children and their wives. It is objectively described the dilemma that Kuomintang military, politicians, officials and businesses faced from within and without. Watching this film absolutely would not be pleasant, but it should be reviewed. The new generation that "does not know how good they have it" should watch it as well. The best performance is the hard luck landlord Zhang Guoli and the Henan Province governor Li Xuejian, the latter is particularly excellent. He brings to life the helplessness of a good hearted official. Chen Daoming as Chiang Kai-Shek, Xu Fan as the village woman are also decent. Winning an Oscar for playing the starving Jew in THE PIANO, Adrien Brody played the American reporter. Tim Robbins played a priest. These foreigners' acting was only ordinary. Actually after the Communist took over China numerous famine and fleeing took place. Feng Xiaogang perhaps had a deep impression, yet because of "political correctness" they were not suitable for mentioning. Thus he worked with an old disaster "before the Liberation", truly his intention was good. In comparison, Zhang Yimou's FLOWERS OF WAR depicted the Nanjing Massacre but also sold prostitute cosmetics and appeased foreigners. It was much more conventional. (Three and a half out of five stars) MY SASSY HUBBY: Pleasant Surprise This week has two comedies that are decent. The Hong Kong produced MY SASSY HUBBY (NGOR LO GUNG NG SUN SING) is somewhat of a pleasant surprise. Dior Cheng Yi Kin and Charlene Choi Cheuk Yin continue their relationship from MY WIFE IS EIGHTEEN (NGOR LO POR NG GAU CHING) ten years ago. Ten years later their marriage is in trouble as they each have their own lovers. What should they do? This is the happy rival formula, luckily director James Yuen Sai Sun maintains quality as the film is vivid, humorous and not mentally deficient. The actors are well matched. Cheng Yi Kin has matured, particularly fun is Choi Cheuk Yin bringing back the pure Hong Kong style spoiled brattiness as the film becomes her most mischievously humorous comedy. Mainland beauty Zhang Xinyi and faithful heir Izz Tsui Chi Hei are also likable. Joyce Cheng Yun Yi plays a gluttonous cousin and Wong Cho Nam as the neighbor's mean husband add to the comedy. (Three out of five stars) A GHOST OF A CHANCE: Exceptional Concept Japanese comedy genius Koki Mitani's A GHOST OF A CHANCE has an exception concept with ghosts. Eri Fukatsu plays a stumbling new lawyer who defends a wife murder case and calls a spirit of a samurai (Toshiyuki Nishida) who has been dead for several hundreds of years to the witness stand. The process is wonderful beyond words. The Akira Kurosawa classic RASHOMON already had seance with the dead as a witness (China's Justice Bao Black Pot Trail was even more ancient). This time the setting has been transformed into a modern court, the film is full of fun and humanity (The recently performed in Cantonese Japanese play A GOOD HUSBAND is another modern human and ghost performance with both laughter and tears). (Three out of five stars) RUROUNI KENSHIN: Colorful Stream Another Japanese film RUROUNI KENSHIN is based on a manga. Director Keishi Ohtomo's method is agile, the action is fierce, and the characters are stylish. In the early Meiji age, samurais are on the decline and unemployed. Takeru Sato plays a handsome young assassin Battosai who is tired of killing uses the "inversed blade" to help the helpless against opium tyrants. The story is inevitably exaggerated, overalls it is a colorful stream. It is a particularly entertaining Japanese swordsman film in recent years. The two young beauties are also attractive in their own ways.
