MISCELLANEOUS * (2012/11/21) Stephen Chow Sing Chi who has not released a film in awhile yesterday met the media in Beijing with Huayi Brother chief Wang Zhonglei. Earlier the not yet titled film confirmed its official title SAI YAU GONG MOR BIN (JOURNEY TO THE WEST: DEMON TAMING CHAPTER) and will be released in the February Lunar New Year slot. Since CJ7 Chow Sing Chi has not released a new film in 4 years. Thus the press conference attracted over 100 media outlets. Sing Yeh who has not appeared in a long time could have passed for a model. The press conference announced a teaser trailer and two posters. In the trailer the Monkey King had its back toward the camera and faced the challenge of the giant Buddha's palm. The short one minute teaser displayed the JOURNEY TO THE WEST story's fantasy pedigree with special effects and space of imagination that viewers will look forward to. The pure slogan poster had "Ten thousand years are too long, seize the day. As soon as the king appears he is invincible." The quote came from Mao Zedong but also answered Sing Ye's CHINESE ODYSSEY "Love you ten thousand years" classic line. The host asked Chow Sing Chi, "You used to be willing to wait ten thousand years, now why do you think they are too long?" Sing Yeh replied, "I was too young then!" This film was also Wang Zhonglei's second collaboration with Chow Sing Chi. He felt that only Chow Sing Chi was able to coordinate with the JOURNEY TO THE WEST story. "His character and scene handling are never what you expect!" Sing Yeh was in a good mood at yesterday's press conference. After the teaser was shown, he deliberately asked the host in Cantonese, "How was it?" The host was pleased and answered in less than fluent Cantonese, "Good!" The host finally asked Chow Sing Chi about his expectation of his new film. Sing Yeh said, "Viewers' happiness is the most important!" * (2012/11/21) TRIAD (JAT JIK) actors William Chan Wai Ting, Deep Ng Ho Hong and Derek Tsang Kwok Cheung earlier attended a film forum at the Baptist University. The actors caused a stir as soon as they appeared and required guest lecturer Liu Kai Chi to urge the student to quiet down. Uncle Chi asked Chan Wai Ting about his journey as an actor. Chan Wai Ting said, "This road isn't easy. At the first audition, after the fifth and sixth male leads I still wasn't picked. Then (Alan) Mak Siu Fai and (Felix) Chong Man Keung saw my TAXI music video performance and finally I had a chance to perform. Then the characters I played were either gigolo or had oedipal complex. Actually I always wanted to play more masculine, tough guy character. So this time my TRIAD performance was very exciting!" Ng Ho Hong said that since he was little he has enjoyed mob films and was very focused in his viewing. THus he has already prepared to play the mob character long ago. He even impersonated Alex Man Chi Leung and read the Tony Gor lines from AS TEARS GO BY (WONG GOK KA MOON). His and William's humor cracked up the students. * (2012/11/20) Charlene Choi Cheuk Yin and Dior Cheng Yi Kin starred in the film MY SASSY HUBBY (NGOR LO GUNG NG SUN SING) unveiled its stills. In one scene Ekin peeped at diving coach Wylie Chiu Shek Chi while dressing left nothing of Chiu Shek Chi's 36D figure to the imagination. She said, "The director asked me to make bigger movements when I change, twist my wrist a few more times to look even more seductive and sexy, but I added Nu Bra underneath. I believe Ekin definitely would have a spraying nosebleed from watching!" As the wife Ah Sa in order to save her dirty minded husband tried her hand on costume seduction. She put a nurse uniform and white stockings to feed cake to Ekin. * (2012/11/20) The TVB Anniversary Show took place last night in Television City. Every year Eric Tsang Chi Wai does his best to obliterate his co-stars. Last night he turned into a wet nurse to fed "King Kong BB" and "Chan Ho BB". King Kong suffered the worse because he not only had milk thrown at him but also had to eat Chi Wai's "back wash rice". Last night's program not only had song and dance but also comedy from artists of this year's two anniversary series THE CONFIDANT (DAI TAI GAM) and SILVER SPOON,STERLING SHACKLES (MING WOON MONG JOOK). "Team Phoenix" Nancy Sit Ka Yin, Sharon Chan Man Chi, Krystal Tin Yui Nei and Sheung Tin Ngor donned male disguises to play the "eunuch castration story". Tin Yui Nei pretended to castrate Sister Ka Yin, suddenly took out a banana and chopped like mad. Then she pointed at senior eunuch Sister Ngor's lower body and said "167", obviously a homophone play. Later "Team Dragon" Moses Chan Ho, Roger Kwok Chun On, Wayne Lai Yiu Cheung and Michael Tse Tin Wa played the four wives of SILVER SPOON, STERLING SHACKLES. Chan Ho played Tavia Yeung Yi, Cheung Jai played Idy Chan Yuk Lin, Tse Tin Wa played Elena Kong Mei Yi in fish net stockings with leg hair, On Jai played Han Ma Lei, they and the Nat Chan Pak Cheung played Damien Lau Chung Yun played with "heavy flavored" intimate contact. Chan Ho bit giant red lips and reprise the lip biting scene between Brother Chung and Yeung Yi. The other three wives charged Lek Gor, who appeared in be a lot of pain. During the interview, Chan Ho remained in character and kept making passes. He revealed that he ordered a pair of four inch high heels to be convincing, but he did not have the nose that Yeung Yi was best known for. He said, "Right! Good point! (Are you afraid of angering Yeung Yi?) No, we are just playing." He also was not afraid of scaring off girlfriend Aimee Chan Yan Mei; but when reporters asked Chan Yan Mei to get closer to Chan Ho, she was not willing no matter what. Yeung Yi was absent last night, reportedly because due to injury from working on the series A GREAT WAY TO CARE II. As for the anniversary show STAR CLASS NURSERY SCHOOL, it as usual was being gross and dirty. King Kong and Chan Ho played babies, Chi Wai played a wet nurse, Samantha Ko Hoi Ning played a nurse. King Kong suffered as Chi Wai not only kept stuffing rice that he already chewed into his mouth but also kept spraying King Kong with the milk bottle. After King Kong, Chan Yan Mei appeared with boyfriend "Chan Ho BB". Chi Wai of course added on as he kept tossing milk powder, coffee powder and water at Chan Ho's face. Chan Yan Mei tried her best to protect her boyfriend but to no avail, as she could only giggle on the side and scream "no". Finally Chi Wai even used baby powder, luckily she was fast enough to grab and pretend her boyfriend from further powder torture. Chi Wai remained unwavering as he brought a birthday cake and Chan Ho to Norman Leung Nai Peng to sing the birthday song, then took the chance to again stuff Chan Ho into the cake. Chan Ho smartly dodged but they made Leung Nai Peng very happy. Later Chan Yan Mei was asked whether her heart ached over her boyfriend being abused? She said, "No, I just wanted to protect him but it was a lot of fun." The Gods Yeung Siu Cheung, Wong Cho Nam and Johnson Lee Si Jit saluted elders with impersonations. Liu Wai Hung even personally appeared on the program and shared his impersonation secrets: no matter what the impersonation was, first you have to make yourself laugh. During the interview, Cho Nam broke down and explained that Ah Chan was his idol. He was reminded of his childhood memories. Ah Chan deliberated rushed from the Mainland so he felt even happier and more touched. This year's anniversary lucky drawing also tried something new as artists played games at every segment. Chan Yan Mei and JJ Jia (Ga Hiu Sun) were arranged to sit in two chairs, then male artists sat on them and pushed. Chan Yan Mei's partner of course was her boyfriend Chan Ho. Chan Ho in order to protect his girlfriend from wardrobe malfunction would rather suffer himself. Last night six big laisees were presented, Mimi Choo, Tang Ying Man, Sit Ka Yin, Wong Cho Nam, William Chak and others won. Raymond Lam Fung won the HK$50,000 credit, the others won 10,000 to 20,000. The Anniversary show went to Lai Yiu Yeung who won the HK$1 million prize, the second prize went to Wai Ka Hung with HK$200,000 worth of prizes, the third prize went to THE VOICE 3 first runner up Jay Fung Won Him who won 100,000 worth of prize. Later Cheung Jai said that he would treat everyone to dinner to celebrate and said that he has never won any prize after years in TVB. This time was an all at once gift to him. With such luck was he confident about winning the Best Actor? He said that he did not know because the Best Actor was about substance and not luck. However he hoped this was a good start. Last night not only all the artists of the station performed, TVB's bosses also appeared. Although Uncle Six Siu Yat Fu (Sir Run Run Shaw) this year remained absent, Aunt Six Mona Fong Yat Wa attended along with new boss Chan Kwok Keung, TVB CEO Leung Nai Peng and others. They toasted to guests and posed for photos at the party. As for Uncle Six's absence, TVB's Tsang Sing Ming said that because Uncle Six has already handed over the CEO post to Leung Nai Peng, he was only a honorary chair and thus rested and enjoyed the program at home instead. Meanwhile, Susanna Kwan Kuk Ying's US$10 million jewelry lost a gem. The crew immediately looked for Sister Kuk and luckily found it in half a hour. TVB also made an unprecedented move of publishing a full page ad on all Hong Kong pay newspapers. The advertisement mentioned, "What we need is a stable operation and service environment that permits free television industry to survive and continue to develop." It made its stance on the government issuing more free television station licenses known again. After the ad, TVB was accused of acting up in front of the Chief Executive to stop the government from issuing more free television license. TVB's Tsang Sing Ming explained, "Because the numbers five and zero are more important to the Chinese, we published the ad to announce TVB's contribution and promotion to the television culture in the past 45 years." Will it try to stop further license issuing? He pointed out that TVB had scheduled meetings with the government and absolutely would not directly speak up. Last night during the Anniversary Show, TVB also shot a short film with Carol Cheng Yui Ling introducing TVB's contribution and promotion of the past 45 years and reiterating its free license stance. At the same time an announcement was made during the program for the establishment of TVB artist charity fund to help three types of people, those who due to an emergency face financial difficulty, the poor, the weak and the aging. Early next year the HK$30 million fund will begin its operation. * (2012/11/20) The famous Swiss watch Eterna held an opening ceremony in Fuzhou Dongbai Shopping Mall. Zhang Jingchu modeled the Eterna Contessa women's watch line. Zhang Jingchu said that earlier she was too busy with work. In order to adjust she has not make a movie in over a year and a half. However this year she has already made many movies and was able to play characters that were different from the characters on the edge before. In addition some movies are already in post production, she believed that in the next year an all new Zhang Jingchu could be seen. * (2012/11/20) Jackie Chan's 101st film CZ12 will be released on December 20. The film was shot on location in many nations, one of the theft scenes took place in France. Big Brother Jackie Chan had to climb on the roof to escape. When he reached the roof the beautiful French countryside scenery captivated him, he was on the roof for a long time and unwilling to return to the ground. Big Brother said that he has been to so many places around the world, France was one of his favorite. He said, "I have worked with French people and companies many times. They are all very friendly. In addition France has good wine and food everywhere, so every time I work in France it has been very enjoyable." In this theft scene, Big Brother Jackie Chan was like Superman, racing left and right, sitting on the edge of the mansion balcony to avoid enemies' pursuit. He was very agile. In one stunt he had to jump to one side of the wall, gripe the gap with his hand and support his body with his legs. The wall had too many loose pebbles and he "slipped". Luckily Big Brother held on with his arms and climbed back to the balcony step by step. * (2012/11/20) Louis Koo Tin Lok yesterday attended a shopping center Christmas light ceremony and "Lego Christmas Village" opening. Goo Jai revealed that this Christmas he will be working on the Benny Chan Muk Sing's new film in Thailand. "Because on the 22nd I will have to work in Thailand, I hope on the 21st I will be able to spend Winter Solstice with my family. (Will you spend the holiday with your family in Thailand?) I am going to make a movie, I am afraid that I can't take care of Mommy and I would be even more worried." Goo Jai said that last week he worked on a commercial on the Baekdu Mountain, which was an early white Christmas for him because he ran into the biggest snow storm in 50 years and was trapped inside his hotel for three days. Finally he was unable to complete the shoot. Later he will shoot the commercial elsewhere. * (2012/11/20) Mainland star Huang Xiaoming yesterday had an accident while working on the film BRIDE WITH WHITE HAIR (BAK FAT MOR NUI JUEN ji MING YUET TIN GOK) and broke his leg. He also suffered from scratches and bruises and currently is hospitalized in a Beijing hospital. Huang Xiaoming was conscious when he was rushed to the emergency room and appeared to be stable. The film recently began production in Beijing and starred Fan Bingbing and Huang Xiaoming. Jacob Cheung Chi Leung was the director and Tsui Hark the art consultant. At the time Huang Xiaoming was working on a wire scene. When he reached 3 meters above ground, he suddenly lost his balance and fell. The left side of his body landed first and thus his left arm and leg could not move. The crew immediately stabilized his left arm and leg first and rushed him to the hospital. From the initial diagnosis, his broken bone situation for now was not serious. According to the doctor, Huang Xiaoming's left leg has already been diagnosed as a comminuted fracture. The overall injury level required more in depth examination. Huang Xiaoming's mother rushed to the hospital when Xiaoming arrived. * (2012/11/20) The Hong Kong Asian Film Festival 2012 two nights ago held its closing ceremony and invited Josie Ho Chiu Yi to present the New Asian Director award, which went to Thai director Nawapol Thamrongrattanarit. Derek Tsang Kwok Cheung also attended. The event selected famous Korean director Kim Duk-Ki's film PIETA as the closing film. Tsang Kwok Cheung said that he came for Kim Duk-Ki's film. "This director has won an award at the Venice Film Festival. I admire him very much." Tsang Kwok Cheung earlier attended his friend Sam Lee Chan Sam's wedding banquet. He said that Lee Chan Sam's wedding was more mild mannered than he imagined. "Lee Chan Sam didn't drink too much. When I left he was still sober." As for his father Eric Tsang Chi Wai getting drunk at every banquet and needed friends to take him home, Tsang Kwok Cheung said, "Papa is working on a new film and has to negotiate the arrangements, so at Lee Chan Sam's wedding banquet he left in the middle." Tsang Kwok Cheung also said that he was busy with his new film TRIAD (JAT JIK)'s promotion and learned that the film box office was ideal. He said, "Our goal was only 3 to 5 million at the box office. If we will be able to reach 10 million, it will be a great performance." * (2012/11/19) Recently films with Hong Kong authenticity like VULGARIA (DAI JOOK HEI KET), DUE WEST OUR SEX JOURNEY (YUT LO HEUNG SAI) and COLD WAR (HONG JIN) all had decent box office. Film companies finally changed their strategies and became wiling to support directors on pure Hong Kong films. Sun City Entertainment already agreed to support director Pang Ho Cheung's March production, a heart warming heart called ABERDEEN (HEUNG GONG JAI). The film will be about two couples. Louis Koo Tin Lok and Gigi Leung Wing Kei will play one and Eason Chan Yik Shun and Miriam Yeung Chin Wa the other. We shall see if Director Pang can generate more buzz after VULGARIA. Pang Ho Cheung this time gave up Mainland co-production because the film was not suitable for Mainland actors. Director Pang has his persistence. In comparison Wong Jing was making the domestic YOUNG AND DANGEROUS (GOO WAT JAI) that obviously could not break into the Mainland market, but he still asked Mainland actress Tong Fei to play Smarties and baffled many. Because the film abandoned the Mainland market, the production budget had to be properly under control. Pang Ho Cheung yesterday explained, "This film can't be made expensively, it has to be done within 18 million. Although the actors haven't been confirmed, they have to be ready. When it really goes into production they can't possibly charge the official prices. They want to support Hong Kong film and aren't afraid of being taken advantage of. They are willing to charge a beyond friendly rate, Goo Jai in particular. His heart is really into supporting Hong Kong film." Pang Ho Cheung at the end of the years still has to make a film for Huayi Brothers, the Mainland film TENDER WOMAN (SAT GIU DIK NUI YUN) that will star Chen Kun and Zhou Xun. It will be completed before the Lunar New Year. In March he will be fully prepared for the Hong Kong film. * (2012/11/19) Charlene Choi Cheuk Yin in MY SASSY HUBBY (NG LO GUNG NG SUN SING) again worked with Dior Cheng Yi Kin. She said that in the film she wanted to have a child with Ekin but he thought that she was not immature enough and set aside parenthood plans. Coincidentally a neighbor asked Ah Sa to take care of a baby so they became a "parent" for a day. Ekin said that all he had to do was to pretend to be mean and the baby was scared. Each time he picked him up the baby would keep on crying. On the other hand, Ah Sa got along well with the little actor. To cultivate a relationship with the baby she held him all day and her arms were numb. Ah Sa admitted that ten years ago she imagined that she wanted a dozen children. Several years later she already "retreated" and only wanted six. In recent years she even changed her mind because she saw how much time her friends who were parents had to spend on raising children. Parenthood truly needed long term planning. * (2012/11/19) The film LOVE IN TIME (DUT NGOR OI NEI) will soon be released. Actors Bosco Wong Chung Chak and Stephy Tang Lai Yun yesterday attended the promotion. Director For For and producer Paco Wong also attended. The actors shared the production experience, during which For For asked Wong Chung Chak, "Is imperfect love easier for people to remember?" Wong Chung Chak was surprised, perhaps he was unprepared for the question. For For immediately apologized and said, "Sorry!" Bosco said that he knew For For was joking and explained that at the time he was thinking of an answer. He said, "Some flawed beauty is pretty good, I would remember it." He also said that old flame Myolie Wu Hung Yi was not in Hong Kong and he would invite all his friends to enjoy his new film. Wong Chung Chak continued that the new film was very innocent. The leads did not kiss or hold hands, they only had one embrace scene that Stephy asked to add. LOVE IN TIME will be released in the Mainland. Bosco and Stephy in the film played cousins, thus their characters needed to be amended. Stephy said, "The two versions have some differences. The Mainland was worried about cousins developing an incestuous relationship. Other scenes didn't need any cutting." * (2012/11/19) * (2012/11/18) Michael Hui Koon Man yesterday accepted a now interview. He revealed that he was planning a movie, but after 16 years it still has not been made because he was highly demanding and wanted a hit script. He made movies for the Hong Kong audience. He did not want to accommodate the Mainland market to keep the movie from being neither fowl nor fish and unable to please the Hong Kong or the Mainland audience. He compared filmmaking to cooking, at least people had to feel the food taste good before it should be promoted elsewhere. Back then who saw the potential in Taiwan and Indian films, but the fact was that as long as the movies are well made they would be hits. Filmmakers should not just look at the Mainland market but extend their range to the world. Hui Koon Man also supported watching Hong Kong films. Lately he praised the Hong Kong film VULGARIA (DAI JOOK HEI KET) but thought it was excessive. Stand up comedy also had dirty jokes that definitely would have reaction, but he personally did not like to go overboard. * (2012/11/18) Anthony Wong Yiu Ming since coming out of the closet this year has been active with gay rights activities. Two nights ago he attended the 23rd Hong Kong Lesbian and Gay Film Festival 2012 opening and received an award to honor his past contribution to the gay community. Two nights ago the film festival invited many overseas film professionals to attend. The award that Wong Yiu Ming received in the past went to director Stanley Kwan Kam Peng. Wong Yiu Ming and Denise Ho Wan Si in the past week participated in a protest to fight for gay rights. Wong Yiu Ming said, "Past activities were just a start. Last week at the Legislative Council we saw that anti discrimination laws couldn't even be discussed. The fight I believe will be rather lengthy, hopefully it will be discussed more through the community." Earlier the city forum also discussed gay rights but the religions strongly responded. Wong Yiu Ming said, "Religious groups' focus is very different, so I didn't think it was strange." Ho Wan Si's high profile coming out reportedly affected Joey Yung Cho Yi who was linked to her in rumors. Wong Yiu Ming said that he did not know about Joey's situation. He said, "If Joey has any problem she would ask him, she hasn't yet so she should be fine." After Ho Wan Si's coming out she reportedly had a lot of pressure. Wong Yiu Ming said, "She says that she doesn't have a pressure. She stood out because she wanted to speak up for the crowd. After she said it she was comfortable and fine, which was different from she spoke up for her personal feeling." * (2012/11/18) Dior Cheng Yi Kin, Charlene Choi Cheuk Yin, Joyce Cheng Yun Yi, and Izz Tsui Ching Hei yesterday promoted their film MY SASSY HUBBY (NGOR LO GUNG NG SUN SING), but Ah Sa was obviously forcing her smile the entire time. Later she admitted that due to her menstrual cycle she was not in a good mood. When asked about being caught with boyfriend William Chan Wai Ting spending the night at home, Ah Sa said that due to her menstrual cycle she forgot everything. Chan Wai Ting was very upset that the address was revealed. She felt that was very normal but she would not moved. With her birthday next week Ah Sa said that she will be at work and that her boyfriend has not yet given her any present. She also did not want any birthday party. Her birthday wish was for the new film to be a hit. Joey Yung Cho Yi was rumored to be bisexual and had an emotional break down, Ah Sa said that right now she should have some quiet time. Thus she did not disturb her. She also said that no one should be labeled and that any label was discrimination. In addition, a magazine published a photo of Ekin at Chin Kar Lok's bachelor party. He said that everyone had a lot of fun that night, the only imperfection was photos because everyone already agreed no photo. He also said that he has always been low key and might not make an announcement until after the wedding. When he and Yoyo Mung Ka Wai left the Chin Kar Lok and Angela Tong Ying Ying wedding banquet they held hands, which was called the hand holding of the century. Ekin had no idea and said that they would hold hands when they went out. He thought everyone was making a big deal out of nothing. * (2012/11/17) This year's Golden Horse jury chair Andy Lau Tak Wa yesterday morning watched MOTORWAY (CHEH SAU) in Taipei. For this trip he bid farewell temporarily to his wife and daughter for a week and would stay until the award ceremony. He will only return to Hong Kong for a day for his movie. The Golden Horse stipulated the jury might watch all the movies on the big screen, even if they have seen it before they have to watch it again. Wa Jai said that being on the jury was like going to class. After the viewing he would exchange opinions with the other jury members. Wa Jai in Hong Kong has already seen 4 movies, but would watch 36 nominated films again in Taiwan! To keep the winners from leaking out, only the jury chair, Golden Horse executive committee chief and lawyer knew the result. Wa Jai said that he could not pretend that he did not know. On the stage he could only read as scripted! * (2012/11/17) Zhang Ziyi, Donnie Yen Chi and his wife Cissy Wang earlier attended the Bulgari photography exhibit. Zhang Ziyi said that she has already completed her part in THE GRANDMASTERS (YUT DOI JUNG SI). She praised director Wong Kar Wai for "living for film". "Wong Kar Wai is someone who spends his life to make movies, the extreme of the film pursuit. He wouldn't let any actor have any regret." * (2012/11/17) The film TRIAD (JAT JIK) two nights ago held an audience appreciation event at a Mongkok cinema. William Chan Wai Ting, Irene Wan Bik Ha and Michelle Wai (Si Nga) were on hand. William joked that he worried no one would be a ticket but luckily the show was sold out in the end. William earlier was caught on a joy ride with girlfriend Charlene Choi Cheuk Yin and accused of spending the night together. He said that they only went to eat that day and not to celebrate his birthday early. He had no way to celebrate on his birthday because he had to work. In the end whatever was caught on camera was it. As for him spending the night at Ah Sa's home, he said that he could not control what was written. He said, "The best is not to follow to the home, even when the house number is published it's not too good." Earlier William said that if the new film reached 8 million at the box office he would agree to streak in celebration. He said, "If I can I don't mind, before the audience appreciation I was worried that no one would get a ticket and we would have to show thanks to empty chairs." Wan Bik Ha was not worried about the box office because at the premiere she already knew the response was decent. As for William agreeing to streak to celebrate, Wan Bik Ha joked that she would support him. She said that she already made a great sacrifice in the the film as she only appeared in underwear. Thus it was his turn to streak. * (2012/11/16) The Taiwan artist Eddie Peng Yu-Yen starred COLD WAR (HONG JIN) has already been released. His performance received praise from the film company chief as the "biggest bright spot" of the film. Soon to turn 30, he has become a film industry hot property. Actually he too has experienced career depression, thus he cherished his work afterward even more and played every character from the heart. When asked about his dreams, he even said, "I don't have any great dream. I am very simple, I like to act, create some good movies. Many characters can change me, change the world and even change the mentality of people who have seen them. I feel it's an incredible thing!" * (2012/11/16) William Chan Wai Ting and Michelle Wai (Si Nga) in the Emperor Motion Picture TRIAD (JAT JIK) played a couple again. William played a mobster with brains but still was not spared from many fight scenes. Was he afraid that the scenes were too bloody? William said that it was not a gimmick, he only wanted for the scenes to be more realistic. Thus he could only sacrifice the Mainland market for the most authentic mob film. He said, "For the first several days I just kept taking a beating. The director explained to me that I only got promoted if I survived the beating." Speaking of the most memorable scene, William said, "The gang slaughter scene was truly very realistic, during that half a hour my heart beat very fast and it was very uncomfortable! Another had 200 actors standing on Jordan, that scene was very shocking! (You have become a category III actor.) Right, but it has no sex, only the subject and the slangs were more sensitive." In another scene, knife wielding killers chased William and Si Nga in a car and they ran until they were soaked and out of breath. They even almost died under the car. William said, "The first take we couldn't predict the distance. When we turned around we realized that the car was super close, with only a few inches! If we stopped we really would have been run over! The funniest part was the other killers ran further and further away, actually they were afraid of getting hit too!" Insisting of "real chops" William finally was injured all over but he did not need girlfriend Charlene Choi Cheuk Yin's comforting. "My arms and face in order to block the knife were bruised and scrapped! Did Ah Sa comfort you?) I don't need it, it's work! Instead I want to keep the wounds, the pain would get me into character more!" However, even the coolest boss had moment of panic. Si Nga revealed that William accidentally kicked her hand. "At the time he had to save me, but he was in too much of a hurry and stepped onto my hand. I was in so much pain I thought my hand was shattered! (Do you want to be an action actress?) Great! I like wire work, I want to chop someone too!" * (2012/11/16) Taking over 10 years to produce, the Wong Kar Wai directed THE GRANDMASTERS (YUT DOI JUNG SI) was released on December 18. Recently videos of the film have been unveiled one after another. Yesterday a 17 minute long ROAD TO THE GRANDMASTERS was released, as Wong Kar Wai described this epic kung fu film THE GRANDMASTERS' journey. THE ROAD TO THE GRANDMASTERS not only had Wong Kar Wai's film process descriptions but also many shots that would break fans' hearts -- the training of Tony Leung Chiu Wai, Zhang Ziyi and Chang Chen. Normally looking frail as a bookworm, Wai Jai in the video jumped rope and practiced with wooden stacks. He even sparred with the stunt team. Once breaking his arm during practice, Wai Jai truly gave his all in his training. The Best Actor absolutely did not just rely on looks and action poses for a pass because director Wong Kar Wai asked all actors to "get inside the characters' bones". Aside from Wai Jai, Zhang Ziyi during her practice screamed from the split that the master asked her to perform. Chang Chen screamed in pain from stretching with the master. For 3 actors, will power was the greatest training. Wong Kar Wai in the video revealed that the idea of making THE GRANDMASTERS started in 1996 when he was working on HAPPY TOGETHER (CHUN GUONG JA SIT) in Argentina. He saw a Bruce Lee cover on a local magazine and felt that this superstar's influence on the world. Yet because the Bruce Lee story has already made many times, he wanted to explore Bruce Lee's master Ip Man more and how he turned Bruce Lee into a legendary figure. In the first 3 years of the film's preparation, Wong Kar Wai visited with over 100 different martial art masters. The video mentioned that and how some of the martial art masters have now passed away and were unable to watch THE GRANDMASTERS in its entirety; during the process Wong Kar Wai was determined to bring back an era from one person and one street. * (2012/11/15) Famous Mainland director Chen Kaige two nights ago attended a Hong Kong University forum to discuss his views on the current film industry. Chen Kaige said, "China film market's continuing expansion is a good thing. Film professionals in order to make money make money according to audience taste is also understandable, but they should seriously consider the goal of the film production and what message does the film want to express." Some Hong Kong film productions that were released in the Mainland saddened him, as he felt some Hong Kong film professionals in order to please Mainland viewers gave up Hong Kong authenticity and made their movies the worst of both worlds. * (2012/11/15) COLD WAR (HONG JIN) has already been officially released on November 8, since then it has received good reviews. Aaron Kwok Fu Sing, Tony Leung Ka Fai, Charlie Yeung Choi Nei's schedules were tightly packed but they dared not slack off. Not only have they promoted in the Mainland and Taiwan, they took an entire day to shoot the Hong Kong promotional photo. The actors kept chatting as soon as they saw each other. Kwok Fu Sing and Leung Ka Fai attended Mainland promotions with directors Longman Leung Lok Man and Sunny Luk Kim Ching and even the Busan International Film Festival opening ceremony, much to the envy of Yeung Choi Nei. This time the film company invited Wing Shya (Ha Wing Hong) to shoot the promotional still. The two mischievous and humorous Best Actors after the shoot wanted to dance with Yeung Choi Nei. After each photo they rushed to the photographer and asked to see the result. Sing Sing and Choi Nei even said that Leung Ka Fai's expression was funny, Leung Ka Fai then could not help but joked with the two with a line from the film. "Although you two have dated before, you don't have to say the same thing and make me feel like a third party." Sing Sing said that when he worked on COLD WAR, everyday was intense. At night he not only familiarized himself with the script but also got ample sleep, the secret of playing a character well. He said that he and Leung Ka Fai each led their own team and triggered a high ranking police internal storm. After several power struggle scenes with Leung Ka Fai he was somewhat exhausted. When he said each sentence he had to speak from the diaphragm, without working out he was still able to train his abs. Choi Nei pointed out that working with Sing Sing and Leung Ka Fai this time, they were very focused from rehearsal to production. Sometimes they even forgot the existence of the outside world. With the very ideal box office performance, Sing Sing said that the sequel should be saved for later. He suggested that now all the actors should get together for a COLD WAR 2012 calendar. Speaking of the inevitable comparison between the two Best Actors, they might compete for the Best Actor again. Leung Ka Fai said, "Of course it's him, I have always won. The jury is tired of seeing me. Kwok Fu Sing has improved so much, I definitely would give it to him." Sing Sing was very humble. "I now actually am at ease, the audience recognition is the most important. It's not like six years ago when I made a movie every year I had to win. Now it's not like that, I feel acting is the job I am passionate about, the process is the most important." In addition, Obama was elected to the Presidency again. Directors Leung Lok Man and Luk Kim Ching were pleased and even said that they already sent an email to Obama to congratulate him as well as to invite him to watch COLD WAR, because the film's inspiration came from the Democratic Primary battle between Obama and Hillary Clinton; yet they joked that Obama might be too busy and has not replied yet. * (2012/11/15) Donnie Yen Chi Tan, Zhang Jingchu and Coco Lee Man two nights ago attended a Baccarat 100th issue celebration. Chi Tan who is always with his wife two nights ago attended alone. He said that his wife attended another event but later he and his wife will represent Hong Kong in a charity event in Rome. He said, "We will only go for a few days and won't have much time to play. However I still hope to take time to have dinner together. Life is short, we have to cherish the time that we spend together." Chi Tan's film THE ICEMAN COMETH (BING FUNG HUP) will officially start production at the end of the month, but he still was unwilling to reveal who the lead actress will be. He only hinted, "She is a very famous Mainland actress, with long hair and long face. Everyone is very familiar with her. She has even made a Hong Kong film that made 60 million at the box office." * (2012/11/15) The Wong Kar Wai directed THE GRANDMASTERS (YUT DOI JUNG SI) trailer was released earlier. Yesterday the film company also released a film poster and a documentary called ROAD TO THE GRANDMASTERS for the audience to get an understanding of the production. In the newly released poster, lead actor Tony Leung Chiu Wai as Ip Man with his back to the camera faithfully worshipped and displayed a dutiful and traditional aura and spirit. Wong Kar Wai in the documentary talked about how this film started for the first time, when a video three days before Ip Man's passing deeply moved him and gave him the inspiration to make the movie. Under the national wushu coach and Jet Li (Lee Nin Kit)'s master Wu Bin's introduction, Wong Kar Wai over three years visited Beijing, Tianjin, Xian, Hebei, Henan, Inner Mongolia, Taiwan, Guangdong, Hong Kong and other locations and over 100 folk kung fu masters of Wing Chun, Eight Diagram, Tai Chi, Xingyi, Tongbei in order to find the spirit and the philosophy behind kung fu. Wai Jai was even Wong Kar Wai's only choice to play Ip Man. He said, "I want to remove everything that Leung Chiu Wai had and shape him anew into another person." He invited Ip Man's final disciple Leung Siu Hung to teach Wai Jai Wing Chun's ways. Master Leung had high praise for Wai Jai. "To someone who has never studied martial art, Mr. Leung has a lot of potential. When you teach him a set, he understands what follows and kills three birds with one stone. He has this kind of potential and the material to learn kung fu." Wai Jai's three years of training is also unveiled for the first time in the documentary. Wai Jai said, "The director and I hope through the training process to experience the personality of a true martial artist, from which to shape a master image that has both flesh and blood." With the upcoming film release, Wai Jai said that he was not nervous. He only hoped that viewers would not watch this film with just the idea of watching an Ip Man movie, because anyone who knew Wong Kar Wai knew that he definitely had his own way to innovate and open everyone's eyes. * (2012/11/15) "Song God" Jacky Cheung Hok Yau recently received his good friend Andrew Lau Wai Keung's invitation to sing the theme song for the film THE LAST TYCOON (DAI SEUNG HOI). After the song debuted on the radio, it received an overwhelming response from listeners and fans everywhere. They praised heavily Hok Yau's near perfect singing and influence. When Hok Yau learned that Chow Yun Fat will play a gun toting mob boss in this film again, he already thought it was rather attractive. Without reading the lyrics, he immediately accepted Lau Wai Keung's invitation. Hok Yau said that Fat Gor has been his idol for year, in particular he liked his God of Gamblers and gun god image. He has always wanted the chance to play mob bosses with Fat Gor. He said, "Fat Gor rose to fame with his on screen performance, I rose to fame with my off screen singing. I hope Fat Gor would like this gift from a fan." When Fat Gor learned that Hok Yau would sing the theme song, he praised that Hok Yau's singing would definitely add flavor to the film. At the same time he also joked about the reason that he has not yet released any music in recent years. "Back then when I met Cheung Hok Yau I already felt that he would become Song God. I saw the situation was to my disadvantage, decided to immediately retire from music and focused on my movies. I never thought that later he came to compete with me for the Best Actor." Fat Gor even planned to secretly go to the recording studio to listen to Hok Yau, but he was found out and stopped. He could only wait for several more days. [ BLAH OF THE WEEK ] Columns, Reviews, Interviews 1. MING PAO DAILY, NOVEMBER 18 2012, FILM WORDS NEW WISE GUYS ARE BETTER THAN EXPECTED Currently Hong Kong films seem to show signs of life but still they are more cold than hot. Recently cop vs. cop COLD WAR (HONG JIN) has been a box office hit, but the new mob vs. mob release TRIAD (JAT JIK) seems to have no way to break out. Its opening box office is average, but it is not an excessive or sloppy production. The film is better than expected. Both films have new directors, at least they show that Hong Kong style cops and robbers films have not been ruined yet. The special packaged police film seem to be more favored than the Wise Guy films. The Daniel Chan Yi Hung directed TRIAD of course is nothing new, as it only recycles the YOUNG AND DANGEROUS (GOO WAT JAI) route that was popular over ten years ago. Yet actually its performance is not bad. The characters are vivid, the story intense, partially well thought out in the midst of convention. William Chan Wai Ting plays an educated poor kid who follows mob boss Patrick Tam Yiu Man and graduates from Hong Kong University. He and his good friends Derek Tsang Kwok Cheung and Edward Chui Woai Dong are two rising brothers who help each others on the way up. These young elite leads finally are nominated for the mob leadership and face the most dangerous battle of life and death. The story starts from 1997 to recent years and touches on the changes of the times, with both dramatic and action fights and triad ceremonies, as well as romantic relationships and buddy friendship, lower class and upper class wealth, it is rather abundant and colorful. Particularly outstanding is several negotiations that display Wise Guys' sharp tongues are better than physical fights. The mob's new blood "progresses with the times" and works with stock market and property tycoons. It is not as outdated as just challenging turfs and collecting debts. The final climax also has an unexpected surprise set up. The leads Chan Wai Ting and Michelle Wai (Si Nga) also perform decently, but in comparison that YOUNG AND DANGEROUS' Dior Cheng Yi Kin, Jordan Chan Siu Chun and others, this time the buddy trio undoubtedly are more immature and lack mob flavor. The most outstanding in this film are the Yau Ma Tei fruit market boss Tam Yiu man and the mob sister Irene Wan Bik Ha. The former has both brains and bravery as well as loyalty, the latter is tough and scheming on the inside. Both look the part and act well. With the mob elder Chan Wai man and tycoon Lo Hoi Pang, the film is well tempered. TRIAD's flaw is limited intelligence, at the key moment it suddenly turns dumb. One after another candidates in the time of danger does not learn to increase security, even sending their subordinates home and facing a street attack alone. Curiously these mobsters seem to have never worked a mob film and deeply believes in the good Hong Kong law enforcement. They completely forget that they too have attacked their enemies on the streets at night! Actually the screen writers and the director can very easily fix these flaws and the entire film would work better. (Three out of five stars) WHEN A WOLF FALLS IN LOVE WITH A SHEEP Is Excessive Naive The Taiwan new comer Hou Chi-Jan written and directed WHEN A WOLF FALLS IN A SHEEP captures the romance of a Taipei "tutor street" young couple. Very refreshing and innocent, the film has lively visuals and a lot of single line animation that connects the film. It is rather unique. Unfortunately it is excessively naive and its sense of comedy is mediocre, with very little actual tutoring center scenes. I feel it is no match of Hou Chi-Jan's 10+10 piece that is full of nostalgia GREEN ISLAND SERENADE or the 1985 Mak Tai Kit directed THE LOSER, THE HERO that officially captures the Nanyang Street tutoring center phenomenon vividly and thoroughly.
