Famous action director Dion Lam Dik On while testing a mark for Ching Wan accidentally pierced his right leg. MING PAO DAILY, OCTOBER 28 2012, FILM WORDS TAICHI SEQUEL IS BETTER WITH ACTION The Stephen Fung Tak Lun directed, Chen Kuo-Fu produced kung fu special effect production TAICHI ZERO (TAI GIK 1 CHUNG LING HOI CHI) already made 150 million yuan RMB in the Mainland. It is one of the better domestic film performers during the October National Day slot. Yet in Hong Kong it only made HK$1.7 million, the difference is drastic. Now TAICHI HERO (TAI GIK 2 YING HUNG GWUT HEI) is released, of course it still has to rely on the Mainland market as Hong Kong viewers are not too supportive. TAICHI HERO: Decent Visual Effects My opinion is the second film is better. Although the first film has more material with comic book style adventures and abilities, metal mechanical castle and Chinese foreign battles, it is excessively produced to the point of exaggeration and absurdity. Lead actor and new Mainland martial art star Yuan Xiaochao is more silly and dumb than humorous, as he still lacks the star charisma of the young Jackie Chan and Jet Li (Lee Nin Kit). The second film fortunately does not pretend to be hilarious and weird, the story is more concentrated. The martial art action is entertaining. The lead and the Chenjiagou clan leader (Tony Leung Ka Fai)'s daughter (Angelababy Yeung Wing) after marriage mature in martial arts. Despite the still raw acting they ultimately are no longer brain dead. TAICHI HERO continues to utilize a large amount of computer and wired special effects. The martial art action often mysteriously becomes "anti gravity". Fortunately the visual effects are decent and achieves the master's mysterious appearance while surrounded by thousands. The finally climax puts Yuan Xiaochao in the royal palace kitchen duel with Eight Diagram style Yuen Biao, as they trade blows on an Eight diagram like screens. It is an alternative Plum Flower Pillars, while at the same time chefs are cooking Manchurian and Han dishes below. This scene actually is unconvincing but outstandingly designed, at least it is not familiar looking. Yeung Wing remains elegant, Leung Ka Fai is well honed as usual. This film even has Daniel Wu (Ng Yin Cho) guest starring as a strange monk, Feng Shaofeng as the big brother who prefers mechanics over martial art and creates mid air launching wings. This film's mechanical science fiction is also unrealistic but better than the first film's mechanical castle. Overall, the story is still flimsy and childish. Fortunately director Fung Tak Lun is more and more skilled, with good visuals and a strong sense of motion. Hopefully the third film TAICHI 3 (TAI GIK 3 DIN FUNG JOI MONG) will improve even further. Also, Chenjiagou indeed is the home of the Chen style Tai Chi. The Yuan Xiaochao played lead Yang Luzen reportedly was an actual Qing Dynasty figure who visited Chenjiagou three times to learn the art then went to Beijing and made a name for himself as he established the Yang style Tai Chi. This TAICHI series only improvised with the subject. The story of course is fictional and even claims that the style is Qing Dynasty Emperor named TAI CHI, who knows whether it has any basis. As for the Tai Chi that is popular around the world it is the creation of Zhang Sanfeng, the Wudang priest who lived through three dynasties of Song, Yuan and Ming. It is also more legend than historical fact. (two and a half out of five stars) NATURAL BORN LOVERS: Concept With Effort The Patrick Kong (Yip Lim Sum) written and directed NATURAL BORN LOVERS (TIN SUN OI CHING KONG) is again his specialty of modern city romance. Since MARRIAGE WITH A FOOL (DUK GA SI OI) became a hit he has been shooting reunions and separations over and over. This time the leads change and the concept has more effort. Julian Cheung Chi Lam plays a baker who is in love with nurse Annie Liu (Lau Sum Yau). Yet it is different from the usual romantic comedy. The more he loves the more painful he is because she is too suffocating. She often checks on his whereabouts and truly leaves him with no room to breathe. Is love a lock that makes people lost their free space? This relationship develops with a lot of twists and turns and can be said as unconventional. The cake making is nothing innovative but the elevator plya is somewhat unique. This film's flaw is it cannot shake off the "sloppy" filmmaking that is frequently seen in Hong Kong comedy and is not refine enough. The film also often adds exaggerated comedy friends who cheapen it. Luckily Lau Sum Yau's expression is good and Cheung Chi Lam is righteous. Mainland newcomer Mabel Ye Xiqi is young, cute and rather photogenic.
