MISCELLANEOUS * (2012/09/12) Best Actors Nicholas Tse Ting Fung and Lau Ching Wan worked together on the Emperor Motion Picture THE BULLET VANISHES (SIU SUT DIK JI DAN) actually had danger at every turn! BULLET used real guns and bullets for the entire shoot, on the set were many munition experts who were responsible for weapon transport. During one of the shooting scenes, a gun backfired due to an expert's negligence. The always calm Ching Wan jumped with fright and intensely scolded the expert, "Is this your first movie?" Ting Fung was also stunned. Ting Fung said, "It truly was surprising, luckily no one was shot." Although Ching Wan has been acting longer than Ting Fung, he worked on his first real guns and bullets shoot. Thus on the set he often asked Ting Fung for advice. Ching Wan said, "This movie truly is much tougher than usual. I mainly had to ask Ting Fung how to dodge shots so I wouldn't be injured, because the director always said that actors had to know how to protect himself." Ting Fung said that he was much more relaxed than Ching Wan. "Because earlier THE VIRAL FACTOR (YIK JIN)'s scenes were even more exaggerated." To ease the tension, Ching Wan often performed magic tricks during breaks and cracked up Mini Yang Mi and Tse Ting Fung. Yang Mi said, "When I saw Brother Ching Wan I thought he was very funny. Although he only performed minor magic tricks they were very entertaining." * (2012/09/12) The film LAN KWAI FONG 2 (HEI OI YEH PO 2) two nights ago held a celebration for breaking 10 million at the box office. Director Wilson Chin Kwok Wai two nights ago along with actors Kelvin Kwan Chor Yiu, Shiga Lin Si Nga and Calinda Chan Yuen Wai attended. Recently director Cheung Wing Ho wrapped "Monster Angel" Jenny Lau Wai Huen's head in a frog bag and pushed her toward the wall during a series shoot. Chan Yuen Wai has worked with Lau Wai Huen and was very surprised. She would ask mutual friends to console her. Has Chin Kwok Wai abused her? Chin Kwok Wai immediately said, "Be careful with what you say!" Chan Yuen Wai praised that he has always been a good director and producer who would constantly take "Angels" to dinner and took great care of people; Chin Kwok Wai joked that eating with him was also abuse. Chin Kwok Wai said that he did not know Cheung Wing Ho and has not seen the video, thus he had no comment. He pointed out that famous directors were often rumored to be very mean and ill tempered, but he believed that they had their own way of handling new comers. They would leave a line even for the very dumb ones. He said, "Now there are more and more dangers because the internet is too developed. If your scolding video is posted online then it would be bad." Lin Si Nga promised to treat the cast and the crew to dinner once the box office passed 10 million. Speaking of her co-star Kwan Chor Yiu wanted to have sashimi, she joked, "I would spend my entire year's salary on a great meal." With the Mid Autumn Festival on the way, Lin Si Nga said that she will have to perform. She wanted to invite her co-stars to support her and would dance the hit Korean horse dance on the stage. It would be the best for the actors to appear in swimming trunks. Kwan Chor Yiu immediately backed out and joked that he would have to wait and see. * (2012/09/12) The Andrew Lau Wai Keung produced, Wong Jing directed, Chow Yun Fat, Huang Xiaoming, Sammo Hung Kam Bo, Francis Ng Chun Yu starred THE LAST TYCOON (DAI SEUNG HOI) released its international poster at the Toronto International Film Festival and in the overseas film magazine Screen Daily. On the poster, Fat Gor's back was turned toward the camera with a gun in his hand and a serious look on his face. In front of him was a large banner with the word honor on it atop Shanghai. Behind him was the English title. Several of Fat Gor's stills from the film were revealed. In the stills he was shooting a gun and looking cool. In recent years Fat Gor mostly starred in costume films. He personally has not held a gun in a film a long time. The film's overseas seller Bona film group said that Fat Gor in previous film posters for A BETTER TOMORROW (YING HUNG BOON SIK), THE KILLER (DIP HUET SEUNG HUNG) and others all held guns and looked mighty. For years they have always been classic among film fans. An overseas professional film site earlier unveiled THE LAST TYCOON's first trailer. Although it was brief it was extraordinary. Hung Kam Bo in the film returned the master invitation to Chow Yun Fat and they were no longer master and disciple but sworn brothers. The trailer displayed Fat Gor receiving the brothers' bows as the boss and thoroughly showed his power. * (2012/09/11) Two Best Actors Aaron Kwok Fu Sing and Tony Leung Ka Fai starred in COLD WAR (HONG JIN), which yesterday held a press conference at the Sky 100. Working with Sing Sing for the first time, Leung Ka Fai praised his co-star's acting improvement from ten years ago. "Like Sing Sing's concerts, it's better and better every time." Directors Longman Leung Lok Man and Sunny Luk Kim Ching appeared with Kwok Fu Sing, Leung Ka Fai, Chin Kar Lok and Gordon Lam Ka Tung. The film company announced that the film has been selected to be the 17th Pusan International Film Festival opening film, as the actors and the directors picked up drum sticks to strike the drums. Announcing his wedding news not long ago, Chin Kar Lok had fun chatting with Sing Sing. Ka Fai also gave his co-star a lot of face and compliment Sing Sing's vastly improving acting. Ka Fai said, "I feel I am a little weak. he is getting stronger and stronger. In several scenes together I saw his improvement, and I too had pressure." Sing Sing also praised Ka Fai for his professionalism and as his Best Actor of Best Actors. During the interview they were asked whether they will head to Korea for the film festival, Sing Sing expected that the film company will make arrangements. He also took the chance to say that the selection was an encouragement to the two new directors. He said, "I hope that the film box office, audience response will be great." Speaking of Ka Fai and Sing Sing having the chance at awards, Ka Fai heard and joked that they definitely will have a chance. However he also said, "If we are nominated, I am not voting." Was he afraid of affecting his relationship with Sing Sing, he said no. "I myself in the past years have won and lost at the film award, I have made my peace with it." In addition, Sing Sing and Kar Lok had fun chatting. Did he receive a wedding invitation? Sing Sing said, "Everyone knows about this, but I haven't receive it yet. It won't be that soon." As for when it would be his turn, Sing Sing had no comment and stated that he had to respect the event and discuss the film. His girlfriend Lynn Xiong (Hung Doi Lam)'s LOVE IS PYJAMAS (NAM YUN YU YI FOOK) and his COLD WAR will confront each other in October. Sing Sing declined to discuss the subject and stated that he would only talk about the movie. * (2012/09/11) September 12 would have been Gor Gor Leslie Cheung Kwok Wing's 56th birthday. 9 years after Gor Gor's passing, his friends and fans still miss him. Gor Gor's manager Chan Suk Fun along with her son Ka Ho and a group of friends and fans on the 12th went to Po Fuk Hill to celebrate Gor Gor's birthday. Japanese fans in the past years have sent thousand origami cranes to express their feeling for Gor Gor. This year's thousand origami crane theme was REDDEST, fans chosen red thousand origami cranes because they hoped to bring them his most suitable color, red, to him before the tenth anniversary of Gor Gor's passing. The craned numbered in 2656 to celebrate Gor Gor's 56th birthday. Even origami crane had a birthday blessing. Japanese fans will personally bring the cranes to Hong Kong and to Gor Gor at Bo Fuk Hill on the 12th. Chan Suk Fun said that the she did not know what the 2656 cranes made. 56 was probably due to his age. This year the fans would probably continue to hold a memorial. She even planned to organize a large scale gathering next year for the tenth anniversary of Gor Gor's passing. Because fans missed him more, the event will be for the fans. It will be a show at the Hong Kong Coliseum and hopefully be broadcast to other locations over satellite so even more fans will be able to enjoy it. * (2012/09/11) The film THE BULLET VANISHES (SIU SUT DI JI DAN) two nights ago held a premiere. The cast including Nicholas Tse Ting Fung, Lau Ching Wan, Liu Kai Chi, Yumiko Cheng Hei Yi and others attended. Patrick Tse Yin, Deborah Li, Amy Kwok Oi Ming, Fala Chen, Fiona Sit Hoi Kei and Paulyn Sun Kai Kwan showed their support. To coordinate for the film's era, Ting Fung and Ching Wan even appeared on rickshaws. Speaking of the film's Mainland box office success, Ting Fung stated that he did not know the box office figure. Yet the film after 15 days in release already lost many cinema circuits to other foreign films. He hoped that the film release would be able to run a little longer. As for the Hong Kong box office expectation, he said that Hong Kong has not had this type of movie for awhile. In addition this was his first zero fight more drama film, so he had more anticipation. This time he even took the role because he heard the name Lau Ching Wan. He said that he admired Ching Wan very much, and learned a lot from his character. However on the set they spoke less than thirty sentences to each other, which suited the characters well. They also set off many sparks. In addition, speaking of his former wife Cecilia Cheung Pak Chi's watch gift on his birthday, Ting Fung clarified, "No! That watch isn't for me. (Did you look forward to it?) Luckily she wasn't buying a clock, otherwise the headline the next day would have been Pak Chi gave Ting Fung a clock (Pak Chi attended Ting Fung's funeral)." He said that he did not like to celebrate, so he did not need Pak Chi to give anything. Has their relationship improved due to their divorce? Ting Fung jokingly asked everyone to look at his parents. Was his burden lightened? Ting Fung said that he could not say that. Did he have any unresolved knots in his heart? He asked, "Do you have any unresolved knots? This is very complicated." He also said that he never had any unresolved knots. He also told Pak Chi everything was for their two sons so they did not need to be unpleasant. Ching Wan was asked about his lack of conversation with Ting Fung. Ching Wan said that because during the shoot he had to stay alert, he did not chat with Ting Fung. Ching Wan recently has been working on the film INFERNO 3D (TOH CHOOK SUN TIN 3D) in Thailand with Louis Koo Tin Lok, due to the workers who spoke different languages on the set, he needed some time to adjust on the first few days. How was working with Goo Jai and Ting Fung different? He said that he has worked with Goo Jai many times so he was more familiar. Their age was closer as well. "When I saw Ting Fung at the television station at age 17 he was still very little, but our chemistry was pretty close." Speaking of his friend Cheung Tat Ming's health condition, Ching Wan revealed that several months ago he already knew that he was ill, but he was uncertain about his cancer. Now the most important was for him to recover as soon as possible. He would not deliberately visit him. * (2012/09/11) Andy Lau Tak Wa, Tong Dawei, Zhang Jingchu and Lin Chiling starred in the film SWITCH (FUCHUN SHAN GUI TOH), which is in an intense post production stage. In the film Lin Chiling had a variety of costumes like school girl, nurse, stewardess and escort. All the costumes were neat. She even had an androgynous costume. Even Lau Tak Wa praised, "I have never seen an actress with so many costumes in one film." Lin Chiling in the film had many outstanding uniforms, from the light and elegant white nurse uniform to the Arab stewardess uniform; from the Japanese innocent school girl's aesthetics to the popular escort's exoticism. Lin Chiling displayed the greatest freedom in her film career and got all the otaku's dreams in one shot. In the film she had 24 costumes. The designers for each other went all over Paris and Milan fashion shows and studied all the top big names to tailor for her. Her costumes alone already cost 2 million RMB. She was surprised. "The team truly treated me too well, with so many different and beautiful costumes. I felt like I have played 24 different characters." Among the uniform costumes, the contrast between Lin Chiling's school girl and escort was memorable. The Japanese school uniform with long hair look was even her first attempt. "When the director said that I had to wear a student uniform, do I say no? Because I truly am too tall, this type of costume truly would be very hard to have a student feeling!" * (2012/09/11) Yesterday Myolie Wu Hung Yi and Lynn Xiong (Hung Doi Lam) attended a shoe store event. Speaking of her film LOVE IS PYJAMAS clashing with Aaron Kwok Fu Sing's COLD WAR (HONG JIN), Lynn said that they are different genre films. Viewers could watch her comedy to relax a little after watching his film. Yet Lynn said that she would not go to the movies with Sing Sing, as she was afraid of keeping others from enjoying the movie. Have they traded opinions on their movies? Lynn said that she was not qualified since he was a Best Actor. Yet Sing Sing has said that her performance was OK and told her to be herself. * (2012/09/10) Two nights ago director Law Chi Leung and Liu Kai Chi attended the film THE BULLET VANISHES (SIU SUT DIK JI DAN) post screening forum. Director Law Chi Leung had nothing but praise for Nicholas Tse Ting Fung's acting, which could rival Lau Ching Wan's. "I asked Ting Fung whether he would have any pressure from 'competing' with Ching Wan. Ting Fung said that he expected to lose to Ching Wan. Yet Ting Fung's display made quite a pleasant surprise for me. His acting absolutely wouldn't lose to Ching Wan's." Good actor Liu Kai Chi in the film played a villain with all white make up. Uncle Chi did not mind at all and even joked about Ching Wan. he pointed out that the movie had a dark person (Lau Ching Wan), naturally it needed a white person for balance. "In order to make Arsenal Chief Ding's strict as a vampire personality, the fashion director and I thought of an all white costume to tell you that this was the major villain. The claw mark on the head was another symbol of his vicious personality and made the character even more clear." * (2012/09/09) The Chow Yun Fat, Liu Yifei, Hiroshi Tamaki, Alec Su (So Yau Peng), Annie Yi (Yi Nung Jing), Ni Dahong, Yao Lu starred THE ASSASSINS (TUNG JEUK TOI) will be released on September 28 for the Mid Autumn Festival and National Day holidays simultaneously in Hong Kong and China. This film not only has a cast from China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Japan but also the Oscar crew from THE CURSE OF THE GOLDEN FLOWER. Fat Gor in the film played Three Kingdoms Cao Cao. The film was also the first that featured Cao Cao as the lead character in China. Fat Gor aside from gun toting also had ample experience with character figures. In the film he will display the danger that Cao Cao faced after reaching the pinnacle of power on the Bronze Sparrow Terrace. He would be the soul character of the film. * (2012/09/09) Jeana Ho Pui Yu, Angelina Zhang (Cheung Woon Nga) and Celia Kwok Wing Yi yesterday along with Justin Cheung Kin Sing and director Mark Wu Yiu Fai promoted their film DUE WEST OUR SEX JOURNEY in Mongkok. Before the event began many photographers and onlookers were already present. TO avoid any chaos, the interview location was changed to on a bus. Yet photographers still surrounded the vehicle for photos. Finally the event was forced to be cancelled. Due to the numerous photographers taking photos on the street, the police came for an understanding. Jeana said that the film's advanced screening received enthusiastic response, thus the cast celebrated with a parade in Mongkok and gave away postcards, condoms and memo pads. Jeana said that 10 security guards were present. She believed Hong Kong to be a lawful place and thus was not worried about being taken advantage of in the crowd. "I am just afraid that we don't get enough people!" Jeana boasted that the film would be able to reach 67 million at the box office and surpass the current Hong Kong film box office champion VULGARIA (DAI JOOK HEI KET). "This year isn't over yet, and the kids now have to go to school. Parents can do their own thing." Jeana and the cast even stated that if the film reached 67 million they would skinny dip to celebrate. Jeana dressed sexier than she has been lately. She said that she already has her boyfriend Parkman Cheung's approval. Did she show off her chest in retaliation of the recent reports that she was not as sexier as Cheung Woon Nga? She said, "Do you feel this is showing off my chest? No way!" When asked to grade what Jeana was wearing, Cheung Woon Nga actually talked about the national education opposition as a Mainlander. although some film promotional personnel asked her to keep quiet, she could not care less. "Everyone today should care about something meaningful. I don't know if actors like us are qualified to discuss national education. Luckily I am able to work and live in Hong Kong from the Mainland. I don't want Hong Kong to lose its freedom and democracy after 10 or so years." Her comment made Jeana drop her microphone, which Jeana covered up with the vehicle was very rocky. * (2012/09/09) Raymond Wong Pak Ming earlier appeared on a cable program and revealed interesting tidbits about superstars when they made ACES GO PLACES (JUI GAI PAK DONG) and ALL'S WELL ENDS WELL (GA YAU HEI SI). ACES GO PLACES' pairing of Sam Hui Koon Kit and Karl Maka was very memorable. Wong Pak Ming pointed out that originally he wanted Chow Yun Fat to be the male lead. "I never imagined that Chow Yun Fat would turn it down. Later I talked to Hui Koon Kit about the script. He listened as he put sugar cubes into his mouth. He truly was 'savoring the sugar'." Back then the film only cost over 1 million to make, but he revealed that Hui Koon Kit's asking price was 2 million. Luckily the film was a commercial and critical hit and he was well worth the price. As for the super classic comedy ALL'S WELL ENDS WELL that had superstars like Leslie Cheung Kwok Wing, Stephen Chow Sing Chi, Maggie Cheung Man Yuk and others, Wong Pak Ming pointed out that Sing Yeh demanded 8 million. "I couldn't find anyone more suitable so I could only pay it. However he suddenly refused to play effeminate. Luckily Gor Gor asked to play effeminate and play a couple with old flame (Teresa) Mo Shun Kwan." Wong Pak Ming joked that everyone in the film saw Sing Yeh as their imaginary enemy. Even Gor Gor kept coming up with ideas for more screen time. "Gor Gor had a way with Cheung Man Yuk. Originally Cheung Man Yuk refused to wear the cone costume over her chest, but Gor Gor was able to talk her into it." * (2012/09/09) Annie Liu (Lau Sum Yau) two nights ago attended a new store opening. She now is busy with promoting her upcoming film release NATURAL BORN LOVERS (TIN SUN OI CHING KONG). She said that she has not seen the film in its entirety. Because she has not acted in Cantonese for a long time, she was afraid that her lack of fluency would be made fun of. Thus she looked forward to the film release very much. TVB recently received many complaints about the lack of fluency of artists who returned from overseas. Lau Sum Yau felt that performing with not so fluent Cantonese was not a problem, depending on the role. In addition they would have subtitles. She also due to pressure had over 10 takes. * (2012/09/08) Jeana Ho Pui Yu, Celia Kwok Wing Yi, Angelina Zhang (Cheung Woon Nga) and Justin Cheung Kin Sing two nights ago attended a screening for their category III film DUE WEST OUR SEX JOURNEY (YUT LO HEUNG SAI). The audience received a fortune bag that included condom, milk and peanuts. Once linked in rumors, Cheung Kin Sing and Celia differed in response. Celia as usual denied them, but Cheung Kin Sing said, "Nice guys in Hong Kong are very hard to pursue, I haven't started yet!" 3D SEX AND ZEN, a film in the same genre, disappointed viewers. Would DUE follow its footstep? Celia was not afraid at all. "In the film I have passionate scenes, and the girls in the movie all go very far!" Cheung Kin Sing joked, "At least this time has no human body explosion! However some male viewers may have something that blows up below their bellies!" * (2012/09/08) The Chapman To Man Jat, DaDa Chen Jing starred film VULGARIA (DAI JOOK HEI KET) in its fifth week in release as of 2PM yesterday approached HK$28 million at the box office band broke the LOVE IN THE BUFF (CHUN GIU YU JI MING) record to be the Hong Kong Chinese film box office champion so far this year. Both films were Pang Ho Cheung directed. When he learned that his films took first and second place he stated, "It's truly too great!" DaDa headed toward the 30 million box office lead actress said excitedly, "I really want to cry!" As of 2PM yesterday, VULGARIA's cumulative box office was 27,991,199 and broke this year's Hong Kong Chinese film box office record. It knocked off LOVE IN THE BUFF's total cumulative box office of 27,947,902 to become the box office champion. Although Pang Ho Cheung "fought himself", his films being the top two Hong Kong Chinese films this year so far made him very happy. As he has said earlier, "To beat others first you have to beat yourself." Pang Ho Cheung thanked viewers who supported him and Hong Kong film. He also took the chance to say to animal lovers, "Actually I really love donkeys!" To Man Jat hoped for film investors to see how well VULGARIA performed so they would invest more only purely domestic films. DaDa was very emotional. "I really want to cry! I am very touched!" DaDa thanked Pang Ho Cheung and To Man Jat for giving her a chance to perform. Being able to this film's lead actress, she truly was very lucky. To Man Jat promoted VULGARIA in Taiwan. He mentioned to Chang Hsiao-Yen that the pressure was greatest on a comedy actor. "In general an actor's acting has room for discussion, but if how well a comedy is played depends on whether the audience laughs; when the audience doesn't laugh, I feel it's a failure." The film has become the Hong Kong highest grossing Chinese film this year. To Man Jat confidently said, "I am also confident about the Taiwan box office!" To Man Jat has always objected to the National Education curriculum, but after a "middle person" reminded him to watch his mouth he could only be quiet. Yesterday To Man Jat posted on facebook that going from a Wise Guy to his performance now, he still had a lot that he wanted to do. He wanted to direct, do stand up comedy, make domestic films, but these excuses could not hide his "selfishness". He would remind himself of one thing. No matter how successful and how rich he would be, he could only live with his head lowered. Because as a Hong Konger, he could only be ashamed of his decision today. * (2012/09/08) Richie Jen (Yam Yin Chai) yesterday attended a California Fitness event. Siu Chai said that lately he was in much better shape because earlier he worked on a Taiwan film, in which he played a middle aged gay man and had to gain weight for the character. Yet during the shoot he received the fitness center's invitation to be its spokesmodel. Siu Chai said, "At the time I worried that with my shape I probably shouldn't work on the commercial, because for the film I had to maintain a big belly. Yet for the fitness commercial I had to be in a good shape. I immediately asked them to give me a two to three weeks to lose weight and get into shape. Now maybe I am not as thin as before, but I still have a six pack abdominal muscle." Siu Chai joked that he had to train until he was fitter than Jay Chou (Chow Kit Lun) before showing off his figure for everyone to enjoy. Siu Chai said that as an actor he constantly had to change his look for his characters. For example when he made a Johnnie To Kei Fung film, he often had to look ugly. Yam Yin Chai said, "Mr. To constantly messes with my head and wants me to have a receding hair line. I said it would be very ugly in the midst of the concert. Mr. To said that the audience came to listen to songs and not to look at me. Being both a singer and an actor is truly hard, unless the movie I make makes enough money for me not to have to perform a concert. However the salary Mr. To pays me is truly too much." Siu Chai revealed that he will perform a concert in Taipei in December, he hoped to have enough time to show off his figure then. In addition, Sammi Cheng Sau Man and Andy Hui Chi On were rumored to wed. Siu Chai asked, "Is it true or not? Let me secretly ask. If it's true, I would congratulate them." * (2012/09/07) Lam Man Chung and Clement Kwok Chi Kin joined directed the black light comedy film PO LEI LO JO. In the film Susan Shaw Yam Yam played Ah Chung's wife and wore a maid costume. Ah Chung said that he this time invested in the film for fun and in the film he was Subhuti (Grape Grandpa Buddha)'s little broker Po Lei Lo Jo (F U Grandpa Buddha). The other female lead is Johnson Lee Sze Jit's rumored girlfriend Naomi who will be in a nurse costume and perform CPR on him. Will he and Shaw Yam Yam have any intimate scene? Ah Chung said, "Inevitably, ultimately the subject messes around. Many actors will guest star and play a role." * (2012/09/07) Jacky Cheung Hok Yau, Taiwan actress Chu Chih-Ying, producer Johnnie To Kei Fung and director Shu Kei yesterday attended the film YUT GOR FUK JAP GOO SI (A COMPLICATED STORY) production start ceremony. Hok Yau worked on a slap scene with a "pregnant" Chu Chih-Ying. Luckily Hok Yau was only slapped for two takes. Hok Yau said, this time he was only guest starring. Why did he take the role? He said that director Shu Kei asked him. Because back then he gave him his start in the film industry, he agreed right away. This time he even worked for free. Was Hok Yau not making other movies? He said, "Don't say that, don't drive me away." As for the national education response, Hok Yau said, "At First I didn't know about the national and moral education courses, so I neither agreed nor disagreed. Now I feel we should sit down and talk about it. If we can't talk in there, we can talk out here. It doesn't mind, don't make it so tough on everyone." When asked whether because his daughter went to an international school he was not too worried? He said that his daughter lately has been singing the national anthem at school or other nation's songs. He felt that people should be patriotic. "If education takes an objective approach, it has no problem." In addition, speaking of TVB's intention of working with other media outlets on a music award show that will have one vote per person for the male and female singer categories, Hok Yau said that a general election might become a fan competition. When a song was well sung but unpopular it was still useless. Hok Yau a long time ago already suggested unifying the music award shows. Yesterday he still said, "A joint award has no problem but needs to be representative. Like the U.S. has many music award shows, but one or two were more representative." TVB seemed to have taken the first step. He admitted that someone speaking up was better than no one, the rules could be set again. Chu Chih-Ying said that she was very nervous when she just slapped Hok Yau. Her hand was shaking. Hok Yau was her idol and she has always admired him. To Kei Fung who was much thinner said that he has already losing weight for a few weeks. He said, "Wa Jai (Andy Lau) gave me a weight loss diet. I had to quit carbohydrate and only ate meat, the goal was to lost over ten pounds." To Kei Fung was like a teacher and a friend to Sammi Cheng Sau Man. Has he received Sammi's wedding invitation? He said, "You ask her." Would he finish THE BLIND DETECTIVE (MAN TAM) earlier so Sammi would have time to wed? He said, "If she wants to, I wouldn't stop her. Wait until the movie is finished then she can." Will he try to finish BLIND as soon as possible? He joked, as fast as he was able to. To Kei Fung said that marriage was between two people. Even parents could not force it. Yet Sammi was a woman and needed a companion. Would Sammi after BLIND wed around October? To Kei Fung said that he did not know. Would he prepare a gift? He said, "Too soon, if it's ten years later, the gift would be rotten." * (2012/09/07) Mini Yang Mi recently worked on a cover shoot for the wedding monthly magazine DARIZI. She admitted that she indeed was lucky and fortunate. In recent years, Yang Mi participated in many topical television series, rapidly rose to fame and joined the film industry. This year she will have eight movies on the way. WU DANG would even be her first martial art film. Fighting in a movie for the first time, Yang Mi although has suffered she displayed her usual optimistic spirit. She would treat hardship as challenge. She said, "Fight scenes to me are very hard. In the process I had to complete many highly difficult stunts and work with many professional martial art actors, which added to my pressure." She remembered that the shoot took place during the winter. She had to wear many layers of warm clothing. Yet after she shot from the morning to the afternoon, all of her clothing inside was soaked as she was covered in sweat. After trying fight scenes, Yang Mi looked forward to keep making action films because it had a great sense of satisfaction. Romantically, she admitted that before meeting her boyfriend Harwick Lau Hoi Wai she was not certain about what type of guy she liked. Actually she never truly ran into one. She also did not know what type of person would be appropriate for her. Yang Mi said, "Before meeting him, I never thought that I would find a Hong Kong actor. Perhaps, destiny is something that is this hard to explain. When I ran into him, it could be said as a type of luck because I luckily discovered his positive points before others. Hoi Wai had a lot of filial piety. He worked very seriously. Yet I like him not just because he is an excellent person. We get along very well." * (2012/09/07) TVB yesterday held its September birthday party for its artists. Attendees included Michelle Yim (Mai Shuet), Tracey Ip Chui Chui and Shuet Nei. Speaking of her film contract signing with Emperor, Mai Shuet said that it was still in negotiation. This time she joined Emperor, did she want to compete with Wai Ying Hung for the Best Actress award? Mai Shuet said, "I too really want to win the Best Actress award, but Siu Hung is very hard working. She too has a lot of opportunities to win the Best Actress award." * (2012/09/07) The film DUE WEST: OUR SEXUAL JOURNEY (YUT LO HEUNG SAI). Jeana Ho Pui Yu, Gregory Wong Chung Hiu, Justin Cheung Kin Sing yesterday promoted in West Kowloon. The actresses Angelica Zhang (Cheung Woon Nga) and Jeana dressed up and did not forget to trade jabs. They were obviously at odds. Jeana said that she did not have any scene with Cheung Woon Nga and only saw her a few times. She thought her face was pretty long. As for her career line, she said, "She is long everywhere, just like her face." She said that later she will try to enjoy the film in 3D. Will her boyfriend attend the premiere? She said that her boyfriend has not replied yet. Will she continue to be sexy at her next promotion? She said that every time she wanted to show everyone her pretty image. Cheung Woon Nga said that she has prepared what she would wear at the premiere for a long time. She also said that DUE was a very important category III film in her life. Speaking of Jeana referring to her face as long, she said, "I agree, my parents feel I am very ugly. Tell her to refer me to her plastic surgeon." Did she know that Jeana had plastic surgery? She said, "She has nowhere normal, if I had plastic surgery I could make it pretty. However Jeana is pretty, but I live for my parents." Speaking of Jeana stealing the spotlight, she said that she would only do her part. Did she feel Jeana just attack her personally? She immediately said, "I don't understand why everyone has to trade jabs back and forth. I feel she has no friend. It's normal for her not to like me." * (2012/09/06) Mia Chen Jing Yi two nights ago attended the film LAN KWAI FONG 2 (HEI OI YEH PO 2) celebration. As a mother Mia stated her objection against promoting national education. She wore black for two days in a row and put a black ribbon on her daughter for school in support of the protest. Mia said that it was very unfortunate that her daughter's elementary school will promote national education but was afraid that switching school after school just started would affect her daughter's mental and physical health development. "My original intention was for my daughter who just started elementary school to study at a local school and learn Hong Kong culture, now I am very worried. I can only pay close attention to the education content. I too want my children to have their own space for independent thinking, but I can't do anything. I can only explain when I watch the news with the children, and instill all the concept of history like a story to my children. As for switching school, I will consider that later." Liu Yuqi dressed up to celebrate the film heading toward 10 million. She said that she was repaying the audience. She said that later she will keep making Hong Kong films but stated that she would not be sexy like pseudo models. Did she resist being classified as a pseudo model? "No! Hong Kong pseudo models are very pretty and very sexy, but they are also numerous. Over the past few years I have been making movies, I am a professional actor." * (2012/09/06) Joey Yung Cho Yi two nights ago led his label mates Raymond Lam Fung, Mag Lam Yun Tung and William Chan Wai Ting at the Metro Digital superstar concert. Big Sister Joey at the concert went all out with her performance and sang with Lam Fung and Mag respectively. When Joey sang WATCHING FLOWERS IN THE MIST, she sentimentally said, "I felt that as long as you like someone, you don't have to worry about others. I didn't experience this until after I turn 30, I just feel that as long as it's right you have to persist." Seemingly it was a declaration of love for her boyfriend Wilfred Lau Ho Lung. Mag since tearing her vocal cord over a month ago performed for the first time two nights ago. Although her quality was not as what it has been in the past, she still got quite an effort as she broke down twice on the stage. "Tonight I am very moved. I don't dare to say how the quality of the performance this tonight has been, but I dare to guarantee that I have given my all." Joey during her interview said that her life had too many different voices. Since no life was completely life, life needed experience and love was a part of it. She said, "Before 30 I was a pull string puppet, a child who was obedient and pleased others. After 30 I learned to plan for myself a little, having a longer term view on things. (Like a monkey off its string?) I have finesse, I would do something that I feel is right without affecting others." As for her boss permitting Joey to work together with her boyfriend Si Hing on a movie, Joey said, "I will worry about it when the movie starts production. I would rather work with (Andy) Lau Tak Wa more. Lau Tak Wa's acting is gret and he is handsome. Acting wise I am a box office poison, of course I have to drag in the Best Actor class for help." Speaking of a restaurant giving away her new film DIVA's tickets online under the suspicion of pumping up the box office, Joey said, "It will soon be out of the cinemas. I can already pop champagne bottles since this film has good word of mouth. Everyone feels the story is entertaining and has improvement. I don't mind, honestly, speaking of box office poison among singer who are transitioning to film, if Chan Yik Shun (Eason) admits to be second, no one would dare to admit they are first. (Will you work together?) If I really have the chance, if he is willing, next year we should have a chance to work together on one. Truly it will be two negatives equal to a positive, treating poisoning with poison." * (2012/09/06) Simon Yam Tat Wa, Paulyn Sun Kai Kwan, Irene Wan Bik Ha, Damien Lau Chung Yun, Michelle Yim (Mai Shuet) and others last night attended the "Emperor Motion Picture Night" contract signing ceremony and to officially join the Emperor Motion Picture artist management department. Already a mother of two Sun Kai Kwan was in great shape. When asked why she returned to film, she said that she has always passionately loved film. Now her sons are eight and four and gradually growing up, she was able to return to film. Sun Kai Kwan said that her older son even asked her for a guest starring role. Would she accept a mother and son collaboration? She honestly said that she could, and her son liked to perform very much. Sun Kai Kwan admitted that currently she was a single mother, but she was in contact with the children's father. They were good friends. She said, "Actually being a mother was already tough. Although I will be making movies, I will be able to take care of the children. Right now they are studying in Hong Kong." Did she need to make milk money? She said that she hoped to be able to make some money; at the same time she said that she had no suitor now but welcomed all men to pursue her. Wai Ying Hung said that this time the salary was very reasonable. She hoped to be able to work with Yam Tat Wa, Nick Cheung Ka Fai, Nicholas Tse Ting Fung and others. She joked that this time she tagged along with Yam Tat Wa to join Emperor. She too would like to make even more good movies and win more awards. As for Gordon Liu (Lau Ka Fai)'s illness, she admitted that she was aware but as far as she knew he is much better now and is able to walk. Speaking of his children unable to see him, she knew that he had some problems at home but was not at liberty to ask him about it. Yam Tat Wa rarely signed with a film company. He said he did this time because Albert Yeung Sau Sing was very passionate about movies and signing with a company could save a lot of time that he would be able to spend more of with his family and on exercising. He said that he also looked forward to working with Sister Siu Hung. Wan Bik Ha said that this time was destiny. She said that after marriage she has been focused on her family life, but actually she loved making movies very much. She said that she was not afraid that she would not be able to take care of her family as well and did not need to ask her husband. * (2012/09/06) The Federation of Hong Kong Filmmakers president Ng See Yuen, Baptist University professor Cheuk Pak Tong and the Sil-Metropole representative Stephen Shin yesterday attended the Baptist University "Hong Kong Film New Power Project" press conference in hopes of promoting Hong Kong film development and cultivation of a generation of film workers. This time the project even landed support from veteran directors Benny Chan Muk Sing, Dante Lam Chiu Yin, Wilson Yip Wai Shun, Alan Mak Siu Fai, Felix Chong Man Keung and others as professional consultants. Ng See Yuen said that he will present a recommendation report to the government in hopes of the government adding 40% of fund allocation from the original 4 million to around 7 million to make a movie. Only this way will new comers be able to make movies. Ng See Yuen said, "Now with 4 million it is very hard to make a commercial film, if it won't be able to be released at the cinema it will only be a wasted opportunity." He said that on the 11th he will along with over 20 directors head to Beijing for some film bureau forums to discuss how to put Hong Kong film excellence in use and how to fend off Hollywood films. Ng See Yuen also mentioned that Hong Kong film right now is mainly shot in the Mainland and workers are mostly Mainlanders. In another 5 or 10 years there will be no Hong Kong film workers, thus they need to cultivate even more new comers. He also said that he had the intention to suggest set construction locations in Hong Kong to the government, like constructing some old Hong Kong street sets for the convenience of filmmakers location shoots. In addition, speaking of the national education noises, Ng See Yuen said that for now he would not express an opinion because the issue was heated. He would like both sides to take a step back. Anything could come to a compromise. He said, "Actually we filmmakers usually don't want to participate in politics. The film industry already has many difficulties. Hopefully this matter will be resolved soon." [ BLAH OF THE WEEK ] Columns, Reviews, Interviews 1. MING PAO DAILY, SEPTEMBER 9 2012, FILM WORDS THE THIEVES: Intriguing And Intense Among the numerous new films this week is the big Korean production THE THIEVES, with a large group of Korean stars like Gianna Jun Ji-Hyun and Kim Yoo-Seok as big time thieves. The main story sets up in Hong Kong as they head to a Macau casino to steal the giant diamond "Tear of the Sun". The film also has Hong Kong stars like Simon Yam Tat Wa, Angelica Lee Sinjie and Derek Tsang Kwok Cheung. The dialogue included Korean, Mandarin, Cantonese and English. I have always enjoyed mystery and robbery films and am very happy with this film's lively use of new technology and big time special effects that make flying over roofs, walking on walls and breaking into safes intense and vivid. Several big stunts are rather outstanding. The stars are also ample and colorful. Jun Ji-Hyun is particularly sexy and funny. THE THIEVES is full of twists and turns, plays with disguises and keeps on transforming. The problem is the characters and the story are too complicated, they even involve entangling old relationships and grudges. Honestly the more I watch the more confused I get, feeling that the middle talks too much and still cannot explain clearly. The entire film's most entertaining part is the beginning and the ending robbery and fight scenes, like last week's big Taiwan police film BLACK AND WHITE EPISODE I: THE DAWN OF ASSAULT it displays East Asian film industry's improvement in making modern large scale special effect action. They are better than if not on par with Hong Kong films. Actually the 1980s Hong Kong film ACES GO PLACES (JUI GAI PAK DONG) cooked up detective and robber and exciting stunts. Back then it was very attractive. (Three out of five stars) THE WEDDING DIARY: Contrived And Melodramatic As for the Adrian Teh (Cheng Kin Kwok) directed Singapore and Malaysia comedy THE WEDDING DIARY, it shows that Singapore and Malaysia Chinese films also have life. This one might as well be old Cantonese film FEAST OF A RICH FAMILY (HO MOON YEH YIN)'s 21st century new version, using a manga style to achieve irony and humanity. Aniu plays an engineer from a poor Malaysian family who falls in love with Singapore woman Elanne Kong Yeuk Lam. Only when they meet the parents to discuss their marriage did he realize that she is a rich girl. He for his masculine dignity spends money to welcome his in laws, but the extravagant wedding banquet far exceeds his budget. He tries his best to pay the bill and thus brews up a stumbling adventure. This film has many scenes that are lively and interesting. The wedding ceremony is both trendy and traditional. His Hokkien family and her Cantonese family both are wonderful on their own. However after the wedding joy turns into sorrow, as the film becomes contrived and melodramatic. Actually her family is super rich, no one has to worry about the wedding expense. Yet the male lead insists on saving face, faces a crisis yet has no idea on how to handle it. He even takes a risk to become a thieving father and hides it from his wife, as he gets in deeper and deeper trouble. The ending compliments this little man for his true love. I disagree. Instead I feel the female lead has chosen the wrong husband. (Two and a half out of five stars) - SHEK KEI 2. APPLE DAILY, SEPTEMBER 8 2012, ELECTRIC FILM ROAD APPLE VENICE INTERVIEW PETER CHAN HEAVILY CRITICIZES THE CHINESE FORMAT The Hong Kong government has to brain wash through national education, actually brainwashing has begun in the film industry long ago. Behind the co-production candy coating is your sacrifice of certain universal value. Fortunately people can say no with tickets and do not need to plead with hunger strike, but I digress. Making co-production films long ago and still called Long Hair, Peter Chan Ho Sun's THE WARLORD (TAU MING JONG) already reached 100 million yuan box office very long ago. He who benefited stated that he has never given up on Hong Kong films. At the same time he hoped through being on this year's Venice Film Festival jury to warn certain Mainland media against magnifying everyone. For example this year the film festival had no Chinese film in competition, they imagined a variety of conspiracy on their own. He heavily criticized the rise of nationalism in the Mainland. Starting with the sad truth of racial self pity, a great lesson of national education class was behind the daring comments. - MAN KWOK CHUN Hong Kong director Chan Ho Sun this year was invited to be one of the Venice Film Festival jury members and the only Chinese representative. Earlier he accepted this newspaper's interview. The event stipulated that he could not discuss questions of this year's films and grading standards, but this year many media asked him the same question. Peter said, "Earlier many Mainland reporters called me and asked me questions about the lack of Chinese film participation in the competition. I told them I couldn't answer because I wasn't someone who was nationalist." Racial Self Pity Is Unhealthy Speaking of the lack of Chinese film in competition being infinitely enlarged by the Chinese media, Peter could not bear watching. He heavily criticized some Mainlanders for nationalism acting up and ego inflating, everything becomes a matter of fact. He said, "Chinese nationalism in recent years has been too sharp, affecting Hong Kong and Taiwan. Everyone placed excessive important on cultural export. Maybe China in the past several centuries has had poor national luck. It got slightly better in recent years and infinitely magnified this (nationalism). Everyone is experiencing achievement, not everything has to be motherland this and motherland that. It's not like hosting the Olympics. Of course what I am saying now is very out of sync in the Mainland, but film truly shouldn't be divided like that. Actually nationalism came form racial self pity. Without self pity where would it come from? Actually it is pretty sad, and very unhealthy." Peter said that what movies the film festival selects has always been luck. It should not become a conspiracy theory. He said, "Film festival selections depend a lot on timing and location. This year many film selections would be released in September and October, so they would use the film festival as a promotional platform. In addition last year's Venice chair and "China Hand" Marco Muller. Marco really likes to watch Chinese films. For years he hasn't invited me to be on the jury. On the other hand new chair Alberto Barbera and I didn't know each other but he asked me. How would you explain that, is it another conspiracy?" Working Up North, Stripped Of Ability Peter criticized heavily because of his personal experience. In 2008 he with the China and Hong Kong co-production THE WARLORD broke 100 million yuan at the Mainland box office. Then he worked with director Teddy Chan Tak Sum and produced BODYGUARDS AND ASSASSINS (SUP YUET WAI SING), which even surpassed THE WARLORD at the box office. However the pain in the process only those involved would be able to understand. Peter said that he could only describe those years as pain that only he would understand. He said, "I am not being cynical, over those years the trend truly forced me to make 'big movies'. Big production to me was quite an irony. I didn't start with big production, only in recent years I was used to 'big productions'. Actually I was very perturbed. After several years I could not be more tired. Of course co-productions in the north has already become the general market trend. I couldn't hid even if I wanted to." When he first arrived in the Mainland Peter said that he felt like he was stripped of his abilities. "My strong suit was sentiment and collective memory, but Hong Kong director up there had a very hard time making something authentic because the growth experience was different. Thus after being 'big production' for several years. Actually of course it was painful, even thinking about changing lines on the set was hard." After being used to the Hong Kong style flying by inspiration Peter had to go by the book with his production format. Peter learned early on to let go of himself. "Actually if I made it with heart, a big production can have small budget film sentiments in it. Like in THE WARLORDS several of Lee Nin Kit (Jet Li)'s dramatic scenes were things that I liked to make, detailed emotions and humanity in flesh and blood; but sometimes I also had to keep in mind things that I didn't like. At the time as soon as I thought of using 800 extras my head hurt." Although he lacked self confidence in the Mainland subject, Peter said that recently his new film MR. CHINA overcame a major mental obstacle for him. He followed, "This time I can relate to the production very much. Although I didn't have the experience of living in the Mainland in the 80s, I believed the sentiment was the same." Emotions Come First in His Judging Standard Speaking of being on an international film festival jury for the first time, Peter joked that he felt like he went to a film summer camp. "Earlier for the Hong Kong Film Festival I would pick out which dozen or so movies that I would watch, but finally maybe due to work at most I would see only three. This time I am "forced" to watch them but I don't have to buy tickets. At the same time I can also have exchanges with filmmakers from different places. It's quite rewarding, like going to the movies with friends. Of course everyone has differences in opinions, but the atmosphere is great. For me emotions come first when I grade a movie, mainly seeing which movie can first move me emotionally before I would analyze them." The Heart of Making Hong Kong Films Never Dies All the brainwashing cannot erase Hong Kong film. Earlier Pang Ho Cheung's movie VULGARIA (DAI JOOK HEI KET) returned to Hong Kong film's roots and created a brilliant box office. In the same way Chan Ho Sun who started in Hong Kong film admitted that one day he would return to its embrace as well. He said, "Yes, but I definitely wouldn't make it for money. The motivation to make it would be the preservation of a type of cultre and Hong Kong spirit value." Putting An Effort Into Discovering New Blood Chan Ho Sun continued, "In a system in which the Great Chinese nationalism is so strong, the rapid vanishing of Hong Kong value and culture is expected. We can't change it, but it doesn't mean that we won't do anything. From now on I hope to be able to discover more new blood and spread the seed of Hong Kong film, in hopes of the local nucleus value would continue on through film to the next Wong Kar Wai, (Johnnie) To Kei Fung, passing on from one generation to the next and so on."
