The film company recently organized a free tour of the production to recruit interested viewers. Early next month Mainland comrades would visit the set for a first glimpse of Justin Cheung Kin Sing and Japanese adult video actress Jessica Kizaki's daring bed scene. Based on the popular internet writing DONGGUAN FOREST, the category III film YUT LO HEUNG SAI's director Mark Wu Yiu Fai has been busy with the production to make the October 1 National Day release. Celia Kwok Wing Yi earlier already shot a passionate bed scene with lead actor Cheung Kin Sing. Then Taiwan amateur and Japanese adult video actresses will perform in the nude. The film company planned to arranged for free guided tours to the set early next month to watch the sex scene with the Ebisu Muscats' 23 year old member Jessica Kizaki. The film company recently has already begun online recruitment and will strictly select participants. Around 16 selections will be made. Director Wu Yiu Fai said, "We really have this idea. Co-workers at promotions are handling it already. Mainly we hope to attract Mainland comrades to experience the atmosphere on the set. The film will open on National Day. They can come for the holiday and go to the movies." Was Wu Yiu Fai worried that the tour would lose control during the shoot? He said, "We will have security on hand." * (2012/06/27) The Soi Cheang Bo Shui directed, Anthony Wong Chau Sun and Shawn Yue Man Lok starred new film MOTORWAY (CHEH SAU) two days ago already made 8.3 million after five days in release. Cheang Bo Shui said that it may be related to the special topic of the police's invisible battle car. "Of course I have to talk about the Chin Kar Lok designed car chases. The competition is very human like two warriors in a duel." Director Cheang and producer Johnnie To Kei Fung were both very satisfied with this result, so they already planned a sequel and would even ask Aaron Kwok Fu Sing and Dior Cheng Yi Kin to race Yue Man Lok and Wong Chau Sun. As a car fan and an amateur driver Kwok Fu Sing was very interested. He said that he could take the chance and drive fast. He even said that he could loan his car collection to the production. "All Cheang Bo Shui has to do is ask. It doesn't matter if I have to use my own, I am ready at any time for a race." Cheng Yi Kin who made THE LEGEND OF SPEED said that he was absolutely familiar with racing. Director Cheang said that he would definitely bring Wong Chau Sun back because he was the director. In addition, this script has already been sold to a Hollywood production company for a Hollywood version. Cheang Bo Shui said that nothing made him happier than his script catching someone's eyes, not to mention a foreign company's. * (2012/06/26) When the names of Daniel Wu (Ng Yin Cho), Lau Ching Wan, Tony Leung Chiu Wai, Alex Fong Chung Shun and Louis Koo Tin Lok, everyone would think of them as representatives of handsome men. Yet in their own small circle, their nicknames are actually "Danni", "Big Bull", "Tiger", "Classmate Fong" and "Louis". Who would dare to publicly call these handsome men by their cute nicknames? Handsome director Derek Yee Tung Sing would! He too has an even cuter nickname. Everyone still called the 54 mature men familiarly as "Siu Bo"! Although the microblog has become how artists distribute information, but some in the industry still like to build their own little word to communicate with friends in a low key manner. The chance visit to Yee Tung Sing's microblog is like a peek into a man's heart. Yee Tung Sing has been on the microblog under a pseudonym for awhile already. He enjoys sharing his life and hobbies, air, land, sea, animals are all there. His baby puppy girl is the "in house model". Even more attractive of course are his handsome friends' Chok look and true sides in front of his camera. Even Lau Ching Wan's diving suit photo is exposed. How Siu Bo calls his friends is also a source of humor. Ng Yin Cho and Koo Tin Lok's nicknames are direct English transliterations, Danni (Daniel) and Louis. As for why Lau Ching Wan would become "Big Bull" and Wai Jai "Tiger"? The explanations are truly difficult. Because Ching Wan is a "Big Bull" his wife Amy Oi Kwok Ming has become "Mrs. Bull". Siu Bo says that he does not know what kind of grass Mrs. Bull feeds Big Bull, as the older he gets the younger he looks. Actually, the men all called their wifes "Leader". Classmate Fong is also another staple of Siu Bo's microblog. Handsome man Fong Chung Shun under his good friend's camera is the most often seen as "drunk". Big hunk becomes a big drunken hero with crab legs, only Siu Bo dares to send it. He even says that he risks the danger to his life to post it. Classmate Fong may look mighty but his tolerance for alcohol is very average. When he is drunk he speaks in English and scares off everyone around him! Once Siu Bo distributes their gathering photo. Even Felix Chong Man Keung and Alan Mak Siu Fai are on hand. He says that Big Bull happily talks nonstop like the mic hog at the karaoke box. A group of film people talks all night not about movies but what they would do after they stop making movies. Louis is not a frequent guest at the events, but Siu Bo loves to pick on him online. Goo Jai in a movie plays a very active character who is good at diving, sprinting and shooting. Siu Bo asks him with all the sports why short distance running? Can he not move in long distance? They trade jabs like children, which is a lot of fun. Yee Tung Sing two nights ago shared a photo of a gathering at his home with Brigitte Lin (Lam Ching Ha), Andy Lau Tak Wa, Eric Tsang Chi Wai, Sylvia Chang (Cheung Ngai Ga). Wa Jai did not arrive until his daughter was asleep, but he was full of smiles and not tired at all. Yee Tung Sing asked if Wa Jai has learned to change diapers? Wa Jai could not hide his joy as a first time father and loudly responded, "Of course!" * (2012/06/25) Wilfred Lau Ho Lung earlier revealed that he was dating Joey Yung Cho Yi. Actually Hu Ge got to her before he did. In the film DIVA, Hu Ge and Yung Cho Yi had a kiss scene. Playing a blind person Hu Ge joked that even the blind would open his eyes to a wet Joey. He praised Joey's lips as very soft and the kiss unforgettable. Joey and Hu Ge played a heroic rescue of a wet beauty kiss scene. They went into the river and Joey fell, the blind Hu Ge had to save her. During the shoot they had several bad takes, and Joey's clothing was wet and then dried several time. Hu Ge joked, "Facing a wet Joey, my sight was attracted; but I played a blind person, very uneasily I was able to settle my eyes. During the kiss scene, Joey has good lips. They are particularly soft and are unforgettable after a kiss." Joey laughed, "I haven't kissed in a long time, because of that they are very well kept." Joey was not worried about rumors with Hu Ge and even praised him to be a good man who knew how to take care of others. "When I was wet and in his arm, I felt his strong arms. Which girl wouldn't like that?" Even a scene in which Joey guided Hu Ge had an accident. She accidentally fell into a hole and scratched up her limbs. Hu Ge joked, "Even the blind didn't fall into a hole, Joey would be even more realistic as the blind person!" * (2012/06/25) Reportedly Nicholas Tse Ting Fung's September schedule has started a bidding war. The Jacob Cheung Chi Leung directed 3D THE WHITE HAIRED WITCH would like him to star and even asked him whether the female lead should go to Tang wei or Fan Bingbing. Teddyg Chen Tak Sum would like him to work with Donnie Yen Chi Tan. Wong Jing would like him to work with Chow Yun Fat on his new film, and a Mainland film company wanted him to work with Korean star Gianna Jun Ji-Hyun. According to Mainland reports, for Emperor and Bona's 100 million RMB 3D WHITE HAIRED WITCH director Cheung Chi Leung locked on to Ting Fung as the best choice for the male lead, with either Tang Wei or Fan Bingbing as the female lead. Ting Fung originally had to work on the Emperor movie about firefighters but if Ting Fung wanted to work on other films the company would accommodate. His manager Mani Fok Man Hei said, "Tang Wei and Fan Bingbing are both good actresses, Ting Fung would be pleased to work with either one. Thank you director for valuing Ting Fung's opinion, ultimately the decision will be the investors'." So far Ting Fung has not decided on which film to make. With so many movies between September and November, his concert schedule this year has been messed up. * (2012/06/25) The Shanghai International Film Festival "China New Film Movie Channel Media Award" took place two nights ago. Attendees included Lynn Xiong (Hung Doi Lam), Wu Man, Fang Qingzhuo and others. 12 awards were presented. Finally the Feng Xiaoning's new film THE SINO JAPANESE WAR AT SEA 1894 won Best Picture. Veteran Hong Kong actor Wu Ma with WU DAO ZI won Best Actor, Fang Qingzhuo with BAO ZOU MA MA won Best Actress. Sun Haiying with THE SINO JAPANESE WAR AT SEA 1894 won Best Supporting Actor, Jiang Shan with FIRST TIME won Best Supporting Actress, Lin Lisheng with MILLION DOLLAR CROCODILE won Best Director. Wu Ma who has won many Hong Kong and Taiwan awards was very excited to receive the Mainland film industry recognition. In his 70s he even boldly said that he wanted to stand on the Shanghai Film Festival stage 25 years later, which led to endless applause. Two nights ago the new director Han Yan directed, Angelababy and Mark Chao (Chiu Yau Ting) starred FIRST TIME won two awards. Han Yan won Best New Director and Jiang Shan who played Angelababy's mother who made great sacrifices for her daughter's happiness and sang the rock version of YOU ARE MY SUNSHINE won Best Supporting Actress. Han Yan after accepting the Best New Director award from Peter Pau thanked the FIRST TIME producer Bill Kong Chi Keung and was very lucky to be able to work with exciting actors like Baby, Chiu Yau Ting, Jiang Shan, Chao Shu-Hai and others. He regretted that leads Chiu Yau Ting and Baby did not win and hoped that their performance would be more recognized in the future. Jiang Shan yesterday received the award from veteran actor Wu Ma and happily thanked the team for bringing her a perfect and fulfilling memory. Baby and Chiu Yau Ting after learning Han Yan and Jiang Shan won immediately congratulated them over the phone. * (2012/06/24) Bonnie Xian (Sin Sik Lai) yesterday attended a Hong Kong cocktail competition as a guest judge. She just returned from working in Beijing and later will promote her new film DIVA. Speaking of her co-stars Joey Yung Cho Yi and Wilfred Lau Ho Lung's one month relationship and Si Hing earlier even publicly announced it, Bonnie said that during the shoot she did not know they were already dating. She only found out after returning to Hong Kong. Looking back at the days on the set, they truly were very friendly. Actually she did not pay any special attention, ultimately the group chatted as they worked. Yet seeing a pair of friends who have known each other for over ten years get together, she felt it was a good thing because they already understood each other very well and no longer needed to spend more time on that. Bonnie admitted that during the shoot Si Hing took special care of Joey and has not neglected her because they were dating. Usually they ate as a group. Bonnie said that she was very surprised after learning about the relationship but she was happy for them. Later when she will see them she will congratulate them. * (2012/06/23) The June 21 Hong Kong release MOTORWAY (CHEH SAU) in one day took in HK$1,021,774 and was the only film to break 1 million at the box office that day. Nine new films were released on the same day but MOTORWAY left them far behind at the box office. In second place was PROMETHEUS with HK$399,275 and in third SADAKO 3D made HK$303,599. Along with the past weekend's advanced screenings, MOTORWAY's total box office has already HK$2,194,381. Yesterday morning when director Soi Cheang Bo Shui and Shawn Yue Man Lok learned about the box office performance online they were excited beyond description. In particular Cheang Bo Shui since ALIEN in the 70s has seen PROMETHEUS director Ridley Scott as his idol. Now his work surpassed his idol's, the feeling of which could not been written about. The director said that since the early morning he has already received congratulations from many friends. He was so excited that he could only respond, "Congratulations! Thank you!" He earlier did not dare to have too much expectation for the film. Now after the box office performance was confirmed, he described, "It's just like a dream!" Currently working on a Mainland series, Yue Man Lok could not hide his surprise when he received the box office result. He immediately cheered on the director online and at the same time thanked all the friends who have supported and attacked him. They made him even stronger. he hoped the film will continue to perform better and better, at the same time he also hoped to make time to return to Hong Kong and celebrate. The other lead actor Anthony Wong Chau Sun was also felt excited but very humbly said, "I am not the male lead, it's just a guest starring role! It's because Yue Man Lok is so cool that the film performed so well. Of course the director deserved the most credit. He came up with the entire story, which was well made and had a lot of effort." Also opening Thursday was THE BOUNTY (YUEN HUNG), which starred Chapman To Man Jat, Fiona Sit Hoi Kei and Alex Man Chi Leung. It made HK$227,781, a decent performance. On the other hand the Cecilia Cheung Pak Chi and Kwon Sung-Woo starred SHADOWS OF LOVE only made $13,251. Cheung Chi Pak films since her divorce from Nicholas Tse Ting like TREASURE HUNT (MO GA JI BO), LEGENDARY AMAZONS (YEUNG MOON NUI JEUNG ji GWUN LING YU SAN), SPEED ANGELS (GIK CHOOK TIN SI) and SHADOWS OF LOVE (already released in the Mainland) all bombed at the box office. * (2012/06/23) Lau Ching Wan, Johnnie To Kei Fung, Wyman Wong Wai Man and others two nights ago attended an Italian label's new store opening party at Central. Ching Wan and To Sir rarely appeared at label events and the event immediately played the promotional short film for To sir. Ching Wan said that To Sir's taste should not be underestimated. The fact was that he was his fashion direction. Even for sandals To Sir stipulated that he could only wear one brand. In real life, Ching Wan's wife was in charge of his clothing. He said, "Because I am very stubborn, I don't care too much about fashion. With my wife here my load is much lighter." He also said that he just finished Dayo Wong Chi Wa's latest stand up comedy short film. At the time only Chi Wa was on hand so he did not know who else would be in it. Would he be interested in directing a short film? Ching Wan said he would not, as he worried that if he would he would not be able to turn back. Later he will work on the new film INFERNO (TOH CHOOK SUN TIN) and play a firefighter. Thus he will be busy with physical training. The film will shoot on location in the Mainland and Thailand. * (2012/06/22) In recent years actor prices kept climbing, adding to the troubles of film investors. Often they suffered drastic losses. Earlier a Mainland production company boss due to failed investment committed suicide and sounded a big alarm for the film industry. Many directors like Feng Xiaogang and Lu Chuan criticized some actors for excessive pricing. Two days ago, filmmaker Manfred Wong (Man Jun) and Mainland male star Huang Xiaoming attended the Shanghai Film Festival New Power Star Producer forum. Man Jun mentioned that high priced stars were not box office guarantees and that some stars last year charged 1 million last year but this year he wanted 10 million. Some also messed around with the opening price, "Out of the blue asking for 20 million". It was truly outrageous! More and more upset, Man Jun even put high priced actors like Jet Li (Lee Nin Kit) and Shu Qi on the table. Man Jun first revealed Lee Nin Kit's price. "For FLYING SWORDS OF DRAGON SWORD (LUNG MOON FEI GAP) Lee Nin Kit charged 90 million. Finally the box office was 500 million, but I asked investor Yu Dong if it didn't star Lee Nin Kit. Yu Dong's answer was 'it might still make that much!' Lee Nin Kit's other film THE SORCERER AND THE WHITE SNAKE (BAK SEH CHUEN SHUEN) bombed brutally, its total box office didn't reach 200 million!" In order to bring out that only when directors, scripts and actors worked together would they achieve good box office, Man Jun even cited a film that starred Shu Qi, Liu Ye, Chang Chen and Sun Honglei but bombed badly. On the other hand Feng Xiaogang used unknown actors when he made THE ASSEMBLY and made Zhang Hanyu a star. Man Jun yesterday said, "I only heard about that, ultimately I wasn't the one who paid, how would I know how much he actually charged!" As for saying even with Shu Qi and Liu Ye the box office might not be good, was he afraid of insulting anyone? Man Jun said, "I only wanted to point out when a movie had good actors like Shu Qi, if the other area didn't coordinate the box office wouldn't perform well." Rumored to be paid in tens of millions, Huang Xiaoming after hearing Man Jun's comments lamented that the market drove artist salaries high and unknowingly revealed Tony Leung Chiu Wai's salary. "Like the people going grocery shopping, garlic costs five (yuan), if it was sold for ten it wouldn't work; I couldn't possibly randomly raise my price, it still depended on the market. Brother Chiu Wai wasn't so expensive before because Hong Kong film only sold in the Southeast Asia market, but now it could be sold for several hundred million. Thus Brother Chiu Wai's salary reaching tens of millions wasn't excessive." His film investment bombed at the box office, Xiaoming stated that he would never regret supporting good movies and praised Zhang Ziyi's investment SOPHIE'S REVENGE as a successful example. "I am not a successful example, but some would always die on the beach for those behind them to have even better chances. I am willing to be the person who is sacrificed in front, I am not someone who can't lose." * (2012/06/22) Juno Mak Chun Lung is planning to make the film CHUT YUT CHUNG SUN (SEVEN DAY RESURRECTION, tentative title), a new development in his ten year career as he will direct for the first time. He said, "Ten years in the business will be a very meaningful day. I hope to make movies that I like. Since I was little I really like the Vampire series of films, so I hoped my first film would be a vampire film and ask the most authentic actors of the 80s Hong Kong to be in it. They include Lau Nam Kwong, Chan Yau and Chin Siu Ho." In addition, he also asked the Hong Kong Film Award winning Best Actress Wai Ying Hung, Best Supporting Actor and Actress Lo Hoi Pang and Susan Shaw Yam Yam for a Hong Kong Film Award line up. Juno admitted that he would like to work with the Vampire series founders Lam Ching Ying and Ricky Hui Koon ing, unfortunately both have passed away. He said, "When I wrote the first draft Hui Koon Ying was still with us. Later when I received the news of his passing it truly was very sudden. I was very sad and regretted that I won't have a chance to work with him. The character was truly right for him." Juno said that the hardest was finding another substance artist who was not too active. He said, "Foreign investors are more familiar with this group of artists more than the currently active artists. Their uniform response was great." Juno hoped to bring back the vampire series that has been missing for almost 30 years to Hong Kong film, using a new character in the vampire subject. Juno for his first direction had to direct a group of veteran actors, which to him instead was easier. He said, "They very quickly understand what I want, which serves a burden sharing purpose. Sometimes they achieve more than I imagine, the pressure instead isn't as heavy on me." * (2012/06/22) 40 year old Julian Cheung Chi Lam last night worked on his new film DAI SHOOK NGOR OI NEI (UNCLE I LOVE YOU) in Shanghai. In the film he played a man of his own age who developed a romance with the 19 year old female lead Mini Fu. The always well known Chilam grew facial hair to add weathered and mature flavor in hopes of being even more convincing. In one scene he had to carry Mini Fu and rode on a motorcycle together. Chilam said that he maintained his state of mind young and had no generation gap at all. He even joked that he was very young, so friendly that he could campaign for Regional Council. Earlier Chilam's wife Anita Yuen Wing Yi brought their son to Shanghai. Was she supervising? He said no as they spent Father's Day together. Their son Demon Child drew him a card. After completing the film at the end of July he will return to Hong Kong for TRIUMPH IN THE SKIES 2 (CHUNG SEUNG WON SIU 2), which will shoot on location in Europe. He looked forward to it very much. * (2012/06/22) Gigi Leung Wing Kei directed a micro movie for the first time. Yesterday she attended the Women Micro Movie media event in Shanghai. She admitted that she had to take care of everything during the shoot. Although it was tough this was a chance to challenge her. Her husband also gave her a lot of support. Was she very mean when she directed? Gigi said that she was not, she still was very gentle. The process was relaxed and she would not give anyone pressure. Yet after the shoot she had sciatic nerve pain. Have directors yell at her before? She said very rarely, maybe because everyone was afraid that she would cry. She originally intended for Angelica Lee Sinjie to play the boss lady in the film, but she was traveling and she could only perform herself. As for her friend Charlie Yeung Choi Nei being rumored to wed her old flame at the end of the year, Gigi has not heard and would ask her when she had a chance. She felt that Charlie's life was fulfilling and comfortable so she did not need to be in too much hurry to wed. * (2012/06/22) The new film THE BOUNTY (YUEN HUNG) two nights ago held its premiere at a shopping center. Leads Chapman To Man Jat, Fiona Sit Hoi Kei along with Alex Man Chi Leung and director Fung Chi Chiang made an appearance. Ah Jat who rested for awhile due to his illness two nights ago was spirited. He joked that during his recovery he only slept and ate just like a pig in the New Territories. Two nights ago Man Ji appeared with his wife. Ah Jat who is recovering from his illness played games and appeared to be in a good condition. Man Ji aside from giving big laisee to other actors and the director also praised his on screen daughter Fiona. He joked about Ah Jat. "I wasn't this busy when I was the lead, now I am a support player and I am so busy. The premiere was the most elegant and Ah Jat got better, what a con job!" Earlier diagnosed with Fisher Miller Syndrome, Ah Jat revealed that he just returned from the U.S. On this trip he kept to himself and met with masters at the Buddhist academy. He said, "Every year around this time I would take three weeks off to mediate in the U.S. The Old Lady came along. This year was already the third year. The doctor said I had to be recovered before I could get on the plane, because long distance flight was a big test for patients. I am already completely healed." Speaking of some magazine claiming that he found a master in the U.S. to save his life, he stressed that it was only gossip. At his worst he was mediating at home and could not breathe. He thought that he would die but later he was fine. Ah Jat admitted that later he will return to work and promote movies like DIVA and VULGARIA (DAI JOOK HEI KET). In August he will also make a new film, CHIU CUP GAING LEI YUN (SUPER MANAGER) with Charlene Choi Cheuk Yin. When asked whether he had to work hard to make money, he admitted that last year he made eight movies and had enough saved up. When he ran into illness he would be able to handle it; he also stressed that the doctor did not dare to guarantee it could return, but the chance was slim. Would he take the chance to have a baby? He did not directly respond. "I got fat from the recovery! Everyday I sat, ate and slept, just like the pigs in the New Territories." Would he quit drinking? Ah Jat said that the doctor said that he could have a small glass everyday; he joked, "All the money went to my wife already, if anything happens to me, she would be rich." Fiona admitted that she was very happy to see Ah Jat. Man Ji was asked whether he could make a comeback. He admitted that if he had offers he would make more. As for television, he replied, "For now I haven't considered it. All the television station series production budgets are shrinking. Salary would be hard to negotiate." Would he consider Ricky Wong Wai Kay's City Telecom? He said, "They didn't ask me, TVB didn't either. (Are you too expensive?) Maybe that is one of the reasons." Would he reduce his salary for a good script? He said, "It's not grocery shopping. The most important is sincerity. A lot of times it's hard to talk about money, but it's hard not to talk about money either." Would he return if Mona Fong Yat Wa asked him? Man Ji said, "No problem! I am also one of Shaw's disciple soldiers." * (2012/06/21) Director John Woo (Ng Yu Sum)'s film RED CLIFF (CHET BIK) in 2008 while shooting the "burning of the chained armada" scene in Beijing, burnt two ships, injured six and killed one, the set and the equipment also were damaged. Yesterday Ng Yu Sum through the Red Cliff Production filed a lawsuit against the special effect company for the accident due to their neglect and seek over HK$17 million in damages. * (2012/06/21) The Zero Chou Mei Ling directed film RIPPLES OF DESIRE (FA YEUNG) invited many Taiwan popular idols Jerry Yan (Yin Sing Yuk), Joseph Cheng Yuen Cheung (Siu Chung), Michelle Chen and Hong Kong stars Simon Yam Tat Wa and Sandra Ng Kwan Yu. Director Chou said that when she first worked with Jerry she already felt that his aura was very unique and that he definitely was not human. Jerry also said, "Because the Taiwan series METEOR GARDEN's character the company typecast me, but I hope to accept challenging jobs that have space for development. This way the sense of satisfaction would be even greater and I like this sense of ease very much. (You won't play Prince Charming again?) The white horse is dead, haha; actors have to try many things, next time I may shave my head, spit and be even rougher, to me they would be even more comfortable." As for the kiss scene with Ivy Chen in the film, he said that luckily it was not awkward. He also remembered to praise her as very pretty, but he loved the characters' feeling of hurt because they displayed deep love that they did not dare to express. He said, "This feeling is very beautiful and reminds me of my crush on the female class president. I would keep taking glances at her. Every time she passed by I would smile very happily like an idiot, but I didn't dare to tell her even at the graduation." Rumored girlfriend Lin Chiling said that she would like to work with him. He happily said, "Really? Actually I have many people who I would like to work with because I can learn from working with good actors." Aside from openly talking about Lin Chiling, he even said that he changed a lot. In the past he was reluctant to attend events with many people, this time he walked the Shanghai Film Festival red carpet with the team and turned into little fans with his co-stars to look at film industry celebrities from different places. Playing a couple in the film Siu Chung and Michelle Chen did not even have a kiss scene, but the director still asked them to stare at each other in a candle lit room to develop their soulful exchanges. Siu Chung said, "Indeed it has magical power. Actually I felt the goddess in front of me was holy and couldn't be dishonored. Through the candle light staring, I finally was able to shake off her goddess brilliance and go forward." They also traded compliments as they called each other talented. Did they truly fall for each other? Michelle Chen admitted that she did but it was a friendly love; Siu Chun played mysterious and said, "Actually no one would know what will happen in the next second and don't dare to make any prediction. Everyone should reserve some space and a sense of mystery." * (2012/06/21) The film MOTORWAY (CHEH SAU)'s actors Josie Ho Chiu Yi, Shawn Yue Man Lok and Anthony Wong Chau Sun attended boss Peter Lam Kin Ngok's Shanghai Film Festival banquet. Chow Yun Fat who was in Shanghai made a surprise appearance. Ho Chiu Yi dressed up for the occasion and received praises from Fat Gor. Once he learned that she became a boss of her own film production company, he joked that Chiu Yi had to keep him in mind for a role. Fat Gor said that looking at Chiu Yi's past film characters, most of her characters were in tattered clothing. He said that she should be pretty. Chiu Yi helplessly responded, "It's not up to me to choose the character!" Fat Gor was also concerned about Chiu Yi's film company condition and jokingly encouraged Chiu Yi, "We are old! Not many characters left for us to play, the future is the world of you younger folks......when you make a movie remember to save a spot for me." Chiu Yi was very appreciative of Fat Gor's encouragement and leaned on him like a little fan, which made the evening even more memorable. * (2012/06/21) Recently the Mainland film box office has turned into hundred million yuan accounts. Almost all Chinese films that did not pass 100 million at the box office were considered rotten. Thus artists who were able to carry the box office made startling jumps in salary. Many artists due to sizable salary became investors as well and in turn the so-called "star producer". Among them Andy Lau Tak Wa and Huang Xiaoming both have failed before, but Huang Xiaoming said that he will continue to be crazy for movies. Yesterday Huang Xiaoming along with veteran Hong Kong filmmaker Manfred Wong (Man Jun) and others attended the Shanghai International Film Festival forum -- New Power: Star Producer. Man Jun first criticized star salary's insane increases, a big name actor now costs 10 million and needs 7 to 8 assistants; Huang Xiaoming as an actor responded to the salary phenomenon. He said, "It's like going grocery shopping at the market, some sells for 5 yuan, some sells for 10. The amount of the salary is market determined. Now each movie has over 100 million investment, actor value increase is also very normal. On the set I ask for a driver, an assistant and an English tutor because my English is poor. I have to learn English when I can." Man Jun said that he had reservations about star producers. He said that if stars could help with finding good scripts and teams and they are worth it. If they could not separate their responsibilities and know their place, they might as well just be the stars. He even pointed out that Lau Tak Wai in the 90s formed Team Work. At first he ambitiously invested in movies that he liked, but suffered brutal losses until this year's A SIMPLE LIFE (TOH JEH) he finally was considered having both fame and fortune. He sighed that few today would be like Lau Tak Wa and persist for several decades for movies. Huang Xiaoming immediately responded that he would continue to be like Lau Tak Wa and do something as crazy to support new directors to make good movies. In Huang Xiaoming's recent investment he was actor, executive producer and producer. With all the titles he admitted that he stumbled into them. He understood that the movie was not a big production and the director was new. Thus the film's commercial success rate was only 20%. From the first day he never planned to make money, but he still continued on because he saw that the Mainland needed new directors with impulse like Yang Shupeng. He in order to complete a movie that ran out of money halfway unconditionally, he still has not been paid for some of his work yet. [ BLAH OF THE WEEK ] Columns, Reviews, Interviews 1. MING PAO DAILY, JUNE 24 2012, FILM WORDS WING CHUN STYLE DRIVING SKILLS, ORTHODOX REASONING This week has two outstanding police films, Hong Kong's MOTORWAY (CHEH SAU) and Japan's THE WINGS OF KIRIN. Neither rely on special effects and strange tricks as they are actually investigating tough cases. They achieve realism and their twists and turns are intriguing, more exciting than the U.S.' THE RAVEN. The Johnnie To Kei Fung produced, Soi Cheang Po Shui directed MOTORWAY mainly is a cops and robbers car battle. Of course it has dangerous car stunts and crashes, but it is different from the usual car chase films. The focus is not racing fast, as it wonderfully achieves the "high speed slow turn" trick. On narrow streets and dead ends cars almost turn on the spot, which is highly difficult. This film has even more Hong Kong authenticity than INITIAL D (TAU MAN JI D)'s "drifting" to become the "Wing Chun style" car chase film -- in a narrow environment it displays "close combat" kung fu. MOTORWAY: Seriously Made, Unconventional Something else that is unique to this film is that the lead is not a detective. Shawn Yue Man Lok plays a traffic police "invisible battle car" team rookie. Anthony Wong Chau Sun plays a soon to retired veteran partner. The old and the young becomes lively and touching master and disciple, each with his own clear cut personality. Wong Chau Sun is obviously a good actor, Yue Man Lok is also flexibility. This year in the romantic comedy LOVE IN THE BUFF (CHUN GIU YU JI MING) he is in full control. In this film as the cool drive he is also in great shape. Superior Gordon Lam Ka Tung, female police superintendant Josie Ho Chiu Yi and others all bring shape and style with entertaining performances. Guo Xiaodong as the mob driving expert also stands out. He is just as quiet and silence as the foreign film DRIVE's Ryan Gosling. He breaks a buddy out of prison and battle both the police and the mob together. On numerous occasions they race to escape and finally create a robbery car chase climax. Strictly speaking, screen writers Joey O'Bryan, Szeto Kam Yuen and Fung Yat Chun's set up remains in the police formula. Fortunately they focus on the traffic police, like EYE IN THE SKY (GUNG JUNG)'s police surveillance team it has a style of its own. Even more importantly director Cheang Bo Shui shoots seriously and unconventionally. In the film Yue Man Lok and female doctor Barbie Hsu (Tsui Hei Woon)'s several encounters are fortunately reserved with love and fun, they would not seem like the same old songs. Directr Cheang Bo Shui for over a decade has been highly productive and adaptable, he has made the dark horror film NEW BLOOD (YIT HUET CHING NIN), THE DEATH CURSE (GOO JAT SUM FONG FONG), HOME SWEET HOME (GWAI MUK), the absurd romance HIDDEN HEROES (JUI GIK BAK YUET SUP NG), and the dark fight films SHAMO (GWUN GAI) and DOG BITE DOG. Three years ago he directed the assassin mystery film ACCIDENT that was rather unique. Now with MOTORWAY he is more professional and mature, as he becomes one of the current Hong Kong directors who is worthy of attention. (Three and a half out of five stars) THE WINGS OF KIRIN Stresses Moral And Ethics Based on a Kiego Higashino novel, the Nobuhiro Doi directed THE WINGS OF KIRIN is an orthodox style reasoning Japanese mystery that makes an excellent film. The story starts with a death in Tokyo, which leads to a factory scandal, student tragedy and the father and son generation gap issue, as well as teacher student relationship and the hardships of country youth workers in the city. This film is neither thrilling nor exciting, but it realistically sketches the conflicts in the society and humanity. Particularly touching is the father in order to make up for his son's crime goes to present origami cranes at various temples, but he is misunderstood and assassinated. Nihombashi and the Kirin statue seem to have important symbolic meanings and have close ties to many characters. Hiroshi Abe as the detective Kyoichiro Kaga is not godly at all, but he is dutiful, full of sense of justice and a stone face sense of humor. When he scolds the teacher for doing bad with good intentions it is very direct. Wonderfully a nurse scolds him for not being dutiful with his father Tsutomu Yamazaki, which makes him feel ashamed. This film "against trend" stresses moral, ethics and education, in today when mischief and mayhem are popular it actually makes people think. (Three and a half out of five stars) THE BOUNTY Overall Is Impractical Another new Hong Kong film THE BOUNTY (YUEN HUNG) is an alternative mystery comedy. Chapman To Man Jat plays a modern "bounty hunter" who specializes in finding wanted criminals and missing people for a reward. In the film he with an inn father and daughter Alex Man Chi Leung and Fiona Sit Hoi Kei develops a relationship and meets many strange and curious criminals. Writer director Fung Chi Chiang cooks up some dark humor with action and comedy as well as guest stars Michael Hui Koon Man and Eric Kot Man Fai. Yet the plot and the characters are rather nonsensical, overall it is impractical. (Two and a half out of five stars) DIN TAO Is Fully Pleasing Taiwan Lunar New Year hit DIN TAO's comedy obviously is more successful and has more country flavor. Based on the true story of the Chio Tian Folk Drums & Arts Troupe, the film is about a temple drum troupe becoming younger and more innovative and creating a comeback miracle. This film is purely Taiwan local flavor and has difficult surprising in Hong Kong. Yet Taiwan can be seen as maintaining its temple traditions, valuing folk customs and arts just like THE WINGS OF KIRIN valuing the ancient Nihombashi, temples and origami crane. It even has exciting competitions. New generation son Alan Ko Yau Lun and traditional father Chen Bor-Jeng's feuds are rather fun. As a conventional film it is considered full, colorful and pleasing. (Three out of five stars) - SHEK KEI 2. TA KUNG PAO, JUNE 24 2012, STAR SALARY CAN AFFORD TO RISE At a Shanghai International Film Festival forum this year, some filmmakers criticized star salary's rocket rise to tens of millions and even requiring several assistants as they affected the film ecology. Film star Huang Xiaoming said, "Film salary is like going grocery shopping, it can be expensive and it can be cheap. Film salary amount is market determined. Now many movies cost over 100 million, the actor price rise is also very normal." Huang Xiaoming's answer is very decent. How severe is the actor price boom situation? What is the real reason behind it? The Mainland film industry boom has been a rare sight in the recent decade, with a shortage of both on and off screen talent. In particular well known actors are in high price "buying frenzy". "Buying frenzy" seems a little disrespectful, but indeed some actors ask for extraordinarily astronomical prices. If investors are willing to "buy" they go to the highest bidders. Many stars are also arrogant and acting like big shots. Some "god class" actors when promoting a new film needed a service team of a dozen or more, along with first class and business class flights for them. The cost was several hundred thousand each time, so the release company could only give up its plan. In recent years, the star price boom has been even worse. "Leaps" of over ten folds are abound. Two years ago a "storm" movie performed rather well. The sequel budget due to actor price inflation doubled. The third installment doubled again. To invest or not became a hard choice for the film company, finally it still had to "give in". Good films are hard to find. How can it let go of a subject that has already been proven popular? Actors continue to rise their salary, no wonder a director has said, "We are very worried everyday that this industry would crash." Big stars like Jet Li (Lee Nin Kit), Jackie Chan, Andy Lau Tak Wa, Tony Leung Chiu Wai, Donnie Yen Chi Tan do not have to worry about not working at all, because they all guarantee certain return and have less examples of accidents and failures. Why the bottom of A class or B class actors can ask for high salary, average industry outsiders cannot put their heads around. The reason is they can rely on television series alone to make huge income. This group of actors can make hundreds of thousands to a million for an episode of television series, actors who can make tens of millions with one series are numerous. In addition the job in general is not as tough as making a movie. They may not be too keen on making movies, and still they have the "to the highest bidder" state of mind. As a director has said, "Our actors' salaries have already reached world class level, but our movies still have not reached world class quality......" Because our distribution network has not reached the entire world, our actor salaries are indeed too high. Now television series actor salaries have already taken up 60 to 70% of the budget, double of the European and American ratio of 30%. The situation is similar in movies. If the phenomenon continues to develop or extend, it will become the most direct obstacle to film and television production industries. 3. TA KUNG PAO, JUNE 24 2012, FATHER SON RELATIONSHIP BRINGS HEAVY DRAMATIC FLAVOR One of the two great detectives of Japanese mystery novel writer Keigo Higashino, Kyoichiro Kaga finally reached the big screen after Detective Galileo. The film THE WINGS OF THE KIRIN's novel was published originally last year. The film and the television series started production soon after, fresh and hot out of the oven. The film follows Keigo Higashino's unique styles. In the investigation process that strips away the layers, the ways of the Japanese society, its traditional etiquettes and family relationships as well as Kyoichiro Kaga (Hiroshi Abe)'s exceptional insight and analytical abilities come through. While the murder case is being resolved, the intricacies of character relationships around the party involved are deconstructed. Of course the most important is to clear up the sequences for the victims and the suspects and untie the knots in everyone's hearts. The main location of WINGS is the Nihombashi Kirin statue that has been called the starting point of the Tokyo streets and the nearby Ningyocho neighborhood that is full of humanity, through which the social phenomenon changes of the times are brought out. They merge the subject of the father and son communication problem, parental expectation of children and how the teacher handling of an accident, to problems of finding a job or a place to live in Tokyo. Director Nobuhiro Doi's handling is even handed without becoming sensational and preachy, and Hiroshi Abe's pleasing exterior and image coordinate with the character and make the film more outstanding. To consolidate his power under a new regime, the Emperor continues to use the Guillotines to persecute the conquered Han Chinese in a reign of terror and oppression. When a reward is placed for the capture of fugitive Lee Kin-fai, who's said to be hiding on an island off Hong Kong, Cho heads to the quiet locale and takes a room at a small hotel, the Lazy Inn, run by housekeeper and astrology columnist Linda and an intensely meddlesome manager. Obstructing Cho's attempts at finding his target is the general weirdness of the locals. The lodge's manager and Linda appear to be father and daughter, though the man's denials cloud the situation; word gets out that Lee, wherever he is, has fallen for Linda; and the small-time hoodlums of the local Biting Sugar Cane Gang are making things difficult with their triad-style theatrics. Soon enough, it seems Cho doesn't just need to catch his man, but also has to clear up family woes and tackle island crime as well. - Tim Youngs FIRST TIME Rating : IIA Length : 103 mins.
