MISCELLANEOUS * (2012/06/20) The Shanghai International Film Festival attracted a group of filmmakers. Directors Tsui Hark, Daniel Lee Yan Kong, Wong Jing and others earlier attended the "Chang Cheh and the Big Film Studio Era" forum. Big Director John Woo (Ng Yu Sum) who halted work due to illness was unable to attend, but his good friend Tsui Hark read his letter about Chang Cheh. In the letter he mentioned that his son Ng Yi Fong's name came from Chang Cheh's calligraphy "Instruct Son With just ways". Before Ng Yu Sum headed to Hollywood, Chang Cheh encouraged him with "Inject Eastern Spirit Into Western Technology". Finally Ng Yu Sum regretted leaving Chang Cheh too soon, now he still wanted to make a movie in his memory. * (2012/06/20) Chrissie Chau Sau Na promoted her film PAPER MOON in Shanghai. Chau Sau Na played an innocent and a wild girl in the film. She said that in one day she changed many times and felt schizophrenic. Sometimes even she was confused and had to rely on her co-stars to be able to differentiate who she was playing. In the film, Gordon Lam Ka Tung and Tedd Chan (Tsang Kwok Fai) played Chau Sau Na's boyfriends. Both were tragic love stories. Chau Sau Na had emotional scenes and had to cry. The director praised her performance. Chau Sau Na was no longer the flower vase but would not waste her sexy figure. When the team was shooting on location in Malaysia, due to the heat tank top and shorts were inevitable. "I have intimate scenes with both actors. Ka Tung's acting is full of experience and can bring me into the character, but his look had facial hair and long finger nails. He also had a dark tan, so getting close to him indeed was a little hard." In one scene Chau Sau Na rode on Lam Ka Tung's motorcycle and she was burnt on the exhaust pipe. * (2012/06/20) Harwick Lau Hoi Wai and Mini Yang Mi starred in the film HOLD JU OI (HOLD ON TO LOVE), which yesterday held a trailer release. The venue was decorated like a wedding. When asked to reprise their proposal and kiss scenes, they appeared to be very awkward and declined in order to preserve their privacy. The event gave a pair of wedding dolls to Lau Hoi Wai and Yang Mi and they used the dolls to kiss in their place. Lau Hoi Wai was unwilling to kneel. He said, "The privacy matter should be left for the important moment." However they could not help but hold hands and waists. The director revealed that during their kiss scene their "kissing could not be stopped". Yang Mi kept her boyfriend company even when she was not in the shoot. She was very nervous when she watched his scene in the water. Lau Hoi Wai said that he still has no plan to wed and their work schedule has been very busy. Yang Mi said, "Now is an age without secret, if in one day we will get married we won't be able to fool anyone." They have already met each other's parents. Lau Tan gave his future daughter in law Yan Mi 100 points. Yang Mi happily said thank you. Lau Hoi Wai also said that his father and Yang Mi got along very well. As for what he admired the most in his girlfriend, Lau Hoi Wai said, "Nothing I don't like." * (2012/06/20) The film MOTORWAY (CHEH SAU) two nights ago held its premiere. The film company applied for a road block near the cinema. Director Soi Cheang Bo Shui led Anthony Wong Chau Sun, Shawn Yue Man Lok, Gordon Lam Ka Tung, Josie Ho Chiu Yi and others to arrived in six almost HK$4 million luxury sports cars. Lok Jai was a car lover and said that he knew the car dealer sponsor. He already got his card in the car. He said that he has four vehicles now, two of which have not been operated for too long and could no longer be operated without repair. Reporters joked that he could get a girl to "start the car"? He joked, "Thank you for your concern! I will try to find a real one as soon as possible, don't bother writing about the fake ones." Wong Chau Sun, Yue Man Lok and director Cheang Bo Shui earlier appeared on a TVB Entertainment News interview. Wong Chau Sun and Yue Man Lok not only discussed their new film MOTORWAY's production in detail but also their own private impression of the other. They have worked together on JUST ONE LOOK (YUT LOOK JEH). Ten years later they worked together again on the new film MOTORWAY. Chau Sun said that he felt Yue Man Lok's thinking was much more mature and was upwardly mobile. He was a very rare actor. Yue Man Lok admitted, "When I made JUST ONE LOOK I thought Chau Sun was very mean. I was afraid that he would yell at me. However, this time I no longer had that feeling. I felt Chau Sun was not as terrifying as described. He treated me like a son. We have more exchanges so he didn't have to remind me in a lot of areas." Yue Man Lok said that Chau Sun was very in character. Constantly before the cameras rolled he was already in character. Everyday he drank sake until he was drunk and worked under the influence. Chau Sun defended that the character required it and he only had his mind on the role. He even joked, "My salary is low, I am a big extra in support Yue Man Lok. When accepting a movie I not only would look at salary, script and co-stars but also the set had to have few pretty girls. Then I can reduce trouble and distraction." In the interview Chau Sun even boasted that MOTORWAY will have decent box office. As for awards, Yue Man Lok admitted that he never won any film award before so he did not know how to answer. He pointed out that Chau Sun won so many that his arms were numb. Chau Sun struck back immediately, "If someone said 'Uncle Wong, tea's on me!' Would you viciously drive him away!" * (2012/06/19) Charlie Yeung Choi Yeung recently has been busy with her first film as a director CHRISTMAS ROSE (SING DAN MUI GWAI). She stated that she did not care about the box office as she only wanted to make the story that she wanted to make and share it with everyone. Charlie also thanked Tsui Hark who was like a father to her and her good friend Aaron Kwok Fu Sing. She said, "I feel Tsui Hark sees things in great detail, he is very certain about what kind of person I am. As for Sing Sing, he and I have quite a connection, with more appreciation than just friends. Back then because I worked on a commercial with him people recognized me." Charlie also talked about the Yim Ho directed FLOATING CITY (FAU SING). She and Sing Sing both had the same idea and deliberately got a tan to play fishermen. Charlie said that she admired Director Yim very much. "Once at the Golden Horse Award, I chatted with Yim Ho back stage. I thought we had a lot in common and I have always looked toward to be able to work to him." * (2012/06/19) Taiwan star Mark Chao (Chiu Yau Ting) led Huang Bo and Terri Kwan Wing yesterday appeared at the Shanghai Film Festival to promote their new film BLACK AND WHITE. Yau Ting was caught in a koala bear. He not only displayed his leg strength but was praised, "Whoever is in love with him definitely can't be higher." Yau Ting was asked about going on holiday with Gao Yuanyuan. He said, "I went but let's not talk about this. She is busy at work and didn't come to Shanghai. With the relationship publicized we have more space, the pressure isn't as big." He also pointed out that a BLACK stunt scene injured his vertebrae. He who did not know how to fight never thought about working in action, but after working with Huang Bo he really wanted to be his underground lover. Huang Bo said, "We don't need to be underground, I am publicizing it now! I am only afraid that your female fans would scold me to death. (Are you afraid of Gao Yuanyuan's jealousy?) No, I can share with her." * (2012/06/19) Feng Xiaogang attended the Shanghai Film Festival to promote his new film 1942. He was very confident in his work and boasted that this production was so excited that viewers' eyeballs would pop out! Earlier he attended the TELLING THE STORY OF CHINA TO THE WORLD industry forum and brutally criticized the Mainland counterfeit phenomenon. When the host mentioned "Hollywood filmmakers have the ability to tell the story to the audience of the entire world", Director Fung was suddenly infuriated! Director Fung said, "We always think we are very important, but indeed we are unimportant. You are a counterfeit nation, fake powdered milk, piracy! How can movies from a nation like yours make people listen? The key is whether the world is interested in hearing the story that you tell!" Director Feng was so disappointed in his own nation completely because of the anti-piracy rally that 180 million people attended. He said, "Host Zhang Guoli overestimated our nation, when he asked the audience whether they watch pirated versions, the answer was a deafening roar was 'YES'! With what would movies from a nation like this head out, with what do you tell stories to other people?" As for some producers' comment that Hollywood films have taken the Mainland box office, Director Feng thought the comment was even more absurd. "I say even if inspection is cancelled and Hollywood is driven out, these movies might not necessarily make money. Then the spear heads will be aimed at the audience, the result is self destruction!" Jackie Chan at another event also urged Chinese filmmakers. "Young directors should make more high quality films. The media must scold rotten films but must support good films." * (2012/06/19) The Mainland privately owned film company with the highest box office last year, Bona Film Group two nights ago held a new film launch in Shanghai. Yu Dong even said that Tsui hark's TRACKS IN THE SNOWY FOREST 3D will be released during the 2013 holiday slot. He felt that everyone would look forward to this story that everyone was familiar with, and even boldly predicted that it would at least make 850 million RMB at the box office. Among the projects, the Mak Siu Fai and Chong Man Keung directed OVERHEARD 3 will probably start production the soonest. Lam Chiu Yin's new film currently still has no specific confirmation. The action film expert will visit Russia this month for the train robbery film MOSCOW MISSION. Before its production start, Lam Chiu Yin in September will work with Nick Cheung Ka Fai on an Emperor film. Currently Ka Fai is resting and training to be at his best. * (2012/06/19) Recently busy with promoting her film in three lands on both sides of the strait, Angelababy yesterday attended a SK-II COLOR all new spring and summer cosmetic event. Speaking of Father's Day two days ago, she said that because she did not return to Hong Kong until late she asked her mother to take her father out to celebrate. Although she was unable to celebrate with him, they were able to see each other at night. She said, "Papa just celebrates a birthday and I gave him an iPhone. I still haven't given him a Father's Day present yet." Earlier Baby revealed that she would give her new film tickets to rumored boyfriend Huang Xiaoming's father. She said, "I gave to all the fathers. My father even cried from watching. (Did you give a Father's Day gift to Papa Huang?) No, I have been very busy lately. I didn't even send a text message. (Are you worried that the elder would complain?) No!" Baby was rumored to be signing with Mainland's Huayi Brothers. She admitted that her manager Kim was in negotiation with them, if it was truly confirmed she would tell everyone. As for rumors that Shu Qi will sign with Huayi as well, would she like to work with Shu Qi? She said, "Of course, she is a female artist who I like. I have seen her movies, she is a sexy goddess. (Would she ask Huang Xiaoming for advice before signing?) At work we are very separate. (For how much would you be willing to sign?) I don't know, I never thought about it." She also said that she and Huayi have worked together many times, it was a trustworthy Mainland company. In addition, Huang Xiaoming recently worked with Chow Yun Fat on the new film THE LAST TYCOON (DAI SEUNG HOi). Earlier when they met the press, Xiaoming was accused of having a plastic face. Baby admitted that she read the news and thought that they looked very much like each other but they were quite different in age. She said, "That proves Fat Gor is well kept. He is very young. Earlier at a Hong Kong premiere I saw Fat Gor, even I was under his spell. His eyes truly were electrifying!" In real life did she feel Xiaoming's face was plastic? She said, "I didn't, his skin is even better than mine!" Today Baby will head to Shanghai for an ad then she will join a film production. She admitted that advertising was good money so she made as much as she could before joining the production. On the other hand she would not look at the salary for film productions, as long as the opportunity was good she would be very happy. * (2012/06/19) Huayi Elle Night two nights ago took place in Shanghai International Fashion Center as one of the Shanghai Film Festival's theme programs. Director Feng Xiaogang and Jackie Chan brought their 1942 and CHINESE ZODIAC (SUP YI SUN CHIU) teams. Other guests included Li Bingbing, Tsui Hark, Irene Wan Bik Ha, Ady An Yi Hin, Gong Xinliang, Zhou Dongyu, Huo Siyan and others. * (2012/06/18) Tony Leung Chiu Wai promoted his film THE SILENT WAR (TING FUNG JEH) in Shanghai. His wife Carina Lau Ka Ling earlier reportedly took a private jet back from Shanghai with Mainland tycoon Jing Baifu. Wai Jai was reluctant to talk about his wife, was he upset about the incident? Wai Jai awkwardly said, "Why would I be upset?" Did his wife Ka Ling visit him while he worked in Shanghai? He joked, "Why would she need to visit?" THE SILENT WAR was shot in Shanghai. Wai Jai said that normally he had a habit of running in Hong Kong. Thus when he had time he would run in Shanghai, but every time he had to be very early. Once he was running a tour group recognized him and someone screamed his name; to avoid causing trouble he could only ignore it and kept running. Later he ran with a cap to avoid being recognized. This time he attended the Shanghai Film Festival he still would run. Used to early to bed and early to rise, he liked to exercise even more as he felt more energetic at work. In THE SILENT WAR Wia Jai played a blind hood, his fourth blind character. He agreed to the role because Felix Chong Man Keung and Alan Mak Siu Fai were good friends, but he has never worked on a movie that they directed together; he also admired Zhou Xun very much. Although he had experience with playing blind, the difficulty was increased this time with a special made contact lens. Since he would not express himself with his eyes he had to add a lot of body language. * (2012/06/18) Aaron Kwok Fu Sing was working on the Mainland film MUK GIK (WITNESS) in Beijing. Yesterday he returned to Hong Kong to attend the Prince Jewelry & Watch award. He won a singing and movie award. The event also added a Father's Day "Father" Award that went to Simon Yam Tat Wa, but Yam Tat Wa joked that he wanted to trade his Father award for Sing Sing's movie award. Obviously man wanted Sing Sing to start a family soon. Sing Sing despite a little hoarse voice was still well dressed. He said that because he had to smoke when he worked on Charlie Yeung Choi Nei's movie CHRISTMAS ROSE (SING DAN MUI GWAI) and he did not rest from the start of the year, he had some discomfort in his throat. For his health and upcoming concert tour, he already quit smoking within a week of the film wrap. Yam Tat Wa received the Father Award, but on Father's Day he still had to work on a movie. He happily said, "Earlier during the shoot I injured my left cheek, my daughter already gave me a kiss and put on lotion for me. She also gave me seven presents, one of which was a sunflower. She said that Papa had to be happy at work everyday. She also asked me for a present. I asked her what it was? She said that she wanted me to take time off. During the summer vacation I will take three weeks off and go to Vienna with my wife and daughter. Next year she will give me 14 presents and I will give her six weeks off." * (2012/06/18) Fiona Sit Hoi Kei, Stephanie Cheng Yung, Charmaine Fong Ho Man and director Fung Chi Chiang yesterday attended the film THE BOUNTY (YUEN HUNG) promotion. How did Fiona celebrate Father's Day? She said that she would dine with her family at night and she already prepared clothing, bag and skin care products as gifts. Fiona said that she was busy with her record release and concert, thus she might not be able to participate in the Mainland promotion. Speaking of Chapman To Man Jat who was unable to promote due to illness, she said, "Earlier I already told Ah Jat not to worry. I even joked that without him the result might be even better, but Ah Jat said that he was afraid I would bore the reporters." Some said that he was recovering in the U.S. and mediating as a treatment. She said, "I know that he might come to the premiere. At first he was worried about the illness, but the progress seemed to have improved. The only thing is his vocal cord nerves might have some problem." She also said that she was very happy about THE BOUNTY being selected for two film festivals. Cheng Yung was asked how she spent Father's Day. She said that with work on hand her father did not complain. She already sent a text message to her father. She said, "Earlier Papa and I went to Sai Kung for the day. We walked around and had seafood. When I have time I would spend it with my family, I am considered a good girl." Would she ask her boyfriend to celebrate with her father? She said that she would not as these could not be replaced. Was her boyfriend's father in Hong Kong? She said that he was and they would celebrate when they had a chance. Has she met her boyfriend's father? She changed the subject and said that this time in the film she had action scenes, after which she fell in love with action scenes. * (2012/06/18) With three superstars Zhang Ziyi, Jang Dong-Gun and Cecilia Cheung Pak Chi, the romantic conspiracy epic DANGEROUS LIAISON yesterday appeared at the Shanghai International Film Festival opening ceremony and held a press conference today. Zonbo Media chair and DANGEROUS LIAISON executive producer and producer Chen Weiming, director Hur Jin-Ho, stars Jang Dong-Gun, Cheung Pak Chi, and Dou Xiao attended the press conference together. This was also the first time Jang Dong-Gun and Cheung Pak Chi saw each other since the wrap. They whispered and laughed nonstop and appeared to be extra intimate. DANGEROUS LIAISON was based on the 1782 famous French novel of the same name. Chinese writer Yan Geling wrote the adapted script and moved the background to the 30s Old Shanghai. The film will officially be released on September 27 for this year's National Day slot. Chen Weiming hoped that its Mainland box office will be able to reach 500 million and the Chinese film champion of the second half of the year. Korean director Hur Jin-Ho was a philosophical professional and a team recognized genius. Dou Xiao revealed that when he joined the team and played a game of chess with the director. The director very quickly understood the game philosophy and merged this feeling into the film. Hur Jin-Ho said that Chen Weiming as long as three years ago Chen Weiming spoke to him about this movie. His Chinese was not great but he thought the film's theme was very meaningful. Being able to work with Yan Geling was a great challenge, so he had the courage to overcome the language obstacle. Top Korean superstar Jang Dong-Gun attracted the media's flash bulbs with his trademark smile as soon as he appeared. Jang Dong-Gun believed that his character would be even more destructive to women. He was a rather dangerous man. This playboy looked like he was pursuing naive women for fun but actually longed for true love. He said that the most dangerous character in the film was not his character but Cheung Pak Chi's, even he was one her of play things (in the film). Cheung Pak Chi said that in real life she did not dare to look at Jang Dong-Gun's eyes because his every expression was very mesmerizing. Thus people often suspected that they were at odds. Cheung Pak Chi said that this "game" in the film was not only hard on people but also hurt them -- her character originally thought she had victory at hand but she did not expect to lose everything. She thought lust and possessive desires finally directed this tragedy of this woman, thus "everything comes from the heart" was the key meaning that her character had to express. At the 65th Cannes Film Festival that ended in May, DANGEROUS LIAISON was the only Chinese film that was selected for Directors' Fortnight and won good reviews. Cheung Pak Chi said that the pressure was larger from participating in the overseas film festival because the DANGEROUS LIAISON story was already very well known in Europe. Later he ran an old viewer who watched the 1998 film version. The viewer expressed to her how much she liked this Chinese film, which touched her a lot. * (2012/06/18) Feng Xiaogang after 18 year of brewing, 9 months of planning and 5 months of difficult production made the 210 million RMB Huayi Brothers Chinese film epci 1942, which held a press conference in Shanghai on the 17th. Director Feng Xiaogang, screen writer Liu Zhenyun, Huayi chair Wang Zhonglei led stars Xu Fan, Zhang Hanyu, Fan Wei, Zhang Mi, Li Qian in a group appearance to announce the 1942 trailer and two posters. This was the film's first public decoding of its confidential image and officially announced that it will bring the audience back to the turbulent 1942. Feng Xiaogang said that the 1942 theme is human. In the trailer "human" in the film appeared. The four stories that connected them also surfaced. When the trailer began, Chiang Kai-Shek (Chen Daoming) asked the Henan province chair Li Peiji (Li Xuejian) about the death toll from the famine. "The government estimates 1,062." "Actual?" Li Peiji's expression of about to speak and stopped began the entire trailer. Later, the characters appeared in rags on the screen as they walked in a snowstorm. They represented the ordinary famine refugee. An Ximen (Zhang Hanyu) was a faithful Catholic missionary. When he witnessed the tragic escape from the famine he could only helplessly question the priest (Tim Robbins), "Does God know what is happening here?"; Time magazine's American journalist (Adrien Brody) was covering the famine with a camera lightly said, "I saw a dog eating a man". The shock of dialogue continued the usual specialty of Feng Xiaogang films. Four different groups of characters, four different stories, were like four different divides of 1942. Then "a forgotten history, a fact that must be faced." was displayed, which was also director Feng Xiaogang's initial motivation of the creation. "Film cannot bring these 3 million people back to life, but perhaps it will be able to make their deaths valuable." In the 75 second trailer, the most memorable was the tragic image of the old and the young on the run from the famine. During the entire film's five month production, over 2,000 people in a sea of refugees took over 3 months to shoot. Wang Zhonglei said about the investment scale, "In pursuit of the realistic effect in the film, we went from the earliest 30 million to its seven fold. Finally the investment was 210 million RMB." * (2012/06/18) The PAINTED SKIN: RESURRECTION (WAT PEI II) team held a press conference in Shanghai on the 17th. Executive producer Yang Hongtao, Wang Ruojun, producer Chen Kuo-Fu, director Wuershan, producer Pang Hong, Wang Zhonglei, art director Yang Zhenjian led Mini Yang Mi, Kris Phillips (Fei Xiang), Chen Tingjia in attendance. At the event Chen Kuo-Fu and Wuershan supported each other and swore to make the 'bullest' Chinese film. The production also officially announced that the film will be released on June 28 in 3D. Speaking of Wuershan, Chen Kuo-Fu revealed, "Once I met with Wuershan to talk about the movie. I said I might not be PAINTED SKIN: RESURRECTION's producer. At the time I saw him sweat but he still calmly said this film 'without you I won't make it'. Another time, before the shoot he had stomach bleeding, when he was still under anesthetic he suddenly sat up in his bed and said, 'I have to make the ‘bullest’ Chinese film with Teacher Kuo-Fu.'" Thus, Chen Kuo-Fu's confidence of joining PAINTED SKIN: RESURRECTION was confirmed. As the 2008 PAINTED SKIN and PAINTED SKIN: RESURRECTION's producer, Pang Hong said that in the four years of preparing for the sequel he was 'very uneasy because I wanted to make a different Chinese film." Among the three actors, Fei Xiang's mature charm had the two female stars under his spell. Chen Tingjia who had the most scenes with Fei Xiang said, "When I told Mama I had to work with Fei Xiang, she said that she wanted to visit me on the set. She never mentioned that before, this was the first time." Yang Mi said, "My previous impression of Fei Xiang was just a very handsome uncle, but when I met him, his mature charm deeply made me submit. Although in the only scene that he and I worked together he killed me." After the Shanghai Film Festival opening ceremony, PAINTED SKIN: RESURRECTION's release date grew closer. One of the producers Wang Zhonglei said, "Now what we can do we have already done, we can only look forward to a good result." The film will be released in 3D. He joked with Yang Mi, "I believe everyone wants to see a 3D Yang Mi 'flying over'. In addition, many scenes also needed 3D to display the most perfect effects." * (2012/06/18) The Heiward Mak Hei Yan directed DIVA today held a press conference in the Shanghai with Joey Yung Cho Yi and Hu Ge on hand. The film festival committee presented a special made birthday cake to the birthday girl Yung Cho Yi. She could not be happier. Hu Ge even gave Joey a kiss. Speaking of this new film, Yung Cho Yi said that she played a music diva. Was the film her autobiography? She said that this was not an autobiography. she just through this character transmitted an idea -- with hard work, everyone could become a diva. She even said that she wore the shoes from the shoot. "Actually these are weapons that a diva must have. In the film every time I attended an event, I would wear a pair of 20 centimeter high heel shoes. Although they were very tough, female stars for beauty needed to make sacrifice." Hu Ge and Joey said that working together was a pleasure and they would like a chance to work together again. Producer Chapman To Man Jat also played Joey's manager. Joey said that she both loved and hated her manager; Hu Ge said that he wanted to become a manager and take care of new young artists like his own children. * (2012/06/17) According to the microblog HKCHANNEL quoting Ming Pao Weekly's report, Andy Lau Tak Wa's daughter has been named "Lau Heung Wai". The report explained that Lau Tak Wa wanted to have another. In addition, Lau Tak Wa even personally handled the process at the government's the Birth and Deaths General Register Office. The report claimed that Lau Tak Wa held celebrations on June 9 and 10. Lau Tak Wa honestly talked about his family, but when his "family" (fans) asked about "Little Dragon Maiden's" name he kept his mouth shut. Earlier Lau Tak Wa was rumored upon advice from a guru to be considering the name "Lau Wan Sin". Finally the Heavenly King's baby was named Lau Heung Wai. Lau Tak Wa's family moved to Manhattan Hill for Chu Lai Sin's post maternity recovery. Friends in the industry were familiar with his personality and kept away from disturbing him. According to family and friends who have seen "Little Dragon Maiden" most recently, she looked very pretty. Even though she was only a month old she already had a beautiful face. "The baby doesn't look too fat, her big eyes and nose look like Mama's, her ears resemble Lau Tak Wa's the most." When asked about her family, after some hesitation the person said, "Lau Tak Wa named her 'Lau Heung Wai'. I can only reveal that much!" * (2012/06/17) Starting today, the 15th Shanghai International Film Festival opened its 9 day run. The film is a story about pirates and geishas. Playing a couple in the film, Yin Sing Yuk and Ivy Chen worked together for the first time. In order to cultivate chemistry, director Zero Chou Mei Ling locked them in a room to stare at a candle; but the outside was more concerned with Yin Sing Yuk's real life interaction with model Lin Chiling. Yin Sing Yuk did not say her name but spoke about her film SWEETHEART CHOCOLATE. "I am very happy to her effort." Both he and Lin Chiling participated in last night's red carpet ceremony. * (2012/06/17) The Angelababy and Mark Chao (Chiu Yau Ting) starred innocent young romance FIRST TIME since its nationwide opening on the 8th not only obtained good word of mouth but also decent box office. Thus two nights ago director Han Yan and Angelababy went to Beijing cinemas for audience appreciation. Baby even revealed that her first love was only a crush. She even imagined her crush to be handsome, but in her mother's eyes he had a "pie face and sesame seed eyes". Two nights ago a viewer asked whether Baby's first love was like the movie's. Baby said that her first love actually was just a crush, and his face was chubby and eyes were small. Her mother even described him as "a pie with a few sesame seeds on top", only she beautified him. As for her first kiss, she admitted that she did not remember how it happened but she definitely was not drunk at the time. Was male lead Chiu Yau Ting her type? Baby praised him as a gentleman and revealed that before the kiss scene he deliberately brushed his teeth. When they kissed he tasted like toothpaste. Baby joked, "I thought, how deep do I have to kiss? Just a peck or do I have to brush my teeth?" Baby also remembered to "complain" to the director for treating Chiu Yau Ting too well, because the director designed many romantic scenes for him to pursue girls as well as a variety of embraces. Baby asked the audience whether they wanted to see her even more daring performance? The audience chimed in and she whined, "Are you setting me up!" * (2012/06/16) The film THE LAST TYCOON (DAI SEUNG HOI) brought together two generations of "Hui Man Keung" as the 57 year old Chow Yun Fat and the 34 year old Huang Xiaoming yesterday attended the Shanghai press conference. Fat Gor made a superstar appearance, Huang Xiaoming became a little fan as he knelt to his idol. The film THE LAST TYCOON yesterday held a press conference, Huang Xiaoming, Francis Ng Chun Yu, Tong Fei rode rickshaws. Chun Yu was in a military uniform. Huang Xiaoming wore a wig and a long Chinese gown. Then Chow Yun Fat rode a Shanghai antique car . Wearing a long Chinese gown and fan he looked like a gentleman. Fat Gor as Hui Man Keung in THE BUND in 1980 was classic. In 2006 Huang Xiaoming played the same role in THE NEW BUND. Yesterday they ran into each other, Fat Gor's momentum crushed Huang Xiaoming's. Fat Gor has been Huang Xiaoming's idol since childhood. When he spoke the microphone malfunctioned. Fat Gor had a little fun at his expense. "Even the mic was very nervous!" Huang Xiaoming said that Fat Gor was the hero in his heart with infinite brilliance. Even Ng Chun Yu said that he joined the business because of Fat Gor. "Fat Gor on the set was very active, which made everyone more relaxed. He truly is amazing." Huang Xiaoming chimed in. "Fat Gor is very lovable. I want to learn about acting as well as life from him. He is my teacher." He even went on one knee. Fat Gor bowed in return and called them Teacher Ng and Teacher Huang. Tong Fei said that when she was little she watched THE BUND with her parents. Fat Gor set her up and asked, "At the time did Papa or Mama love me more?" Tong Fei could not answer. Fat Gor laughed and said, "I am very happy to work with young people. In the future when film and I are both old, we have to rely on them." When asked whether Fat Gor took this role for Hollywood salary and hours, director Wong Jing said, "The salary is very reasonable, the hours are healthier than Hong Kong but a little longer than Hollywood. His demands are the same as (Andy) Lau Tak Wa and (Jet Li) Lee Nin Kit's." Producer Andrew Lau Wai Keung praised Fat Gor for insisting to perform the explosion scene personally and was very agile. In the film Fat Gor and Huang Xiaoming's relationship had to be kept under wrap for now. * (2012/06/16) Clifton Ko Chi Sum's ATV program invited Danny Summer (Ha Siu Sing), Pakho Chau and former news flower Sharon Cheung Ming Wa to be his guests and share their views on music and movies. Pakho Chau currently is working on the Wong Toi Hing created micro movie about different girls' pursuit of love and the growth of the male lead. It even had bed scenes. Li Bingbing said, "The leads of the film festival will always be movies, for the red carpet you just have to dress to show respect to the occasion. When I attended Venice, Gucci provided all the fashion. This time the label is still in charge, to me choice without choice is the most fortunate! Because this way you can focus on judging films in competition and have even more time to experience the film atmosphere." Would the jury favor Chinese films? Li Bingbing said that emotionally of course she would have a psychological preference, but Shanghai Film Festival is an A class film festival, a global film competition. As a judge she must judge with fairness. Her standard was "whether it hit your heart!" Later she will watch movies everyday. Will she feel frustrated and exhausted? She said, "It will definitely be exhausting, but I believe my mind will be raging, everyday I will have to watch more than three films. Normally it's very hard to watch so many good films all at once! This time on the jury to me is a very rare chance for me to inject years of film understanding and thinking into the jury process." * (2012/06/16) Gigi Leung Wing Kei earlier was invited to direct one of the 15th Shanghai Film Festival's "Gratitude, Care, Growth" theme women micro movie LUCKY COOKIE. Gigi for the first time wrote, directed and starred this film, from voice work to musical score she personally supervised. Gigi said, "Originally I was just the writer and the director, but when the story came out everyone thought the female lead's aura was very close to mine. Finally I took the part." Gigi was both excited and happy to receive the Shanghai Film Festival's invitation to direct because she has always been interested in directing. She was also very interested in this time's theme of "Gratitude, Care, Growth" so she agreed right away. However Gigi admitted that working in so many positions was not easy. She said, "In the past as an actress I only had to familiarize myself with the script and understand the character. Yet this time I also have to pay attention to everything that is happening on the set, like the production progress, time, dialogue, and communicating with each actors. I didn't even have time to have a sip of water......haha! Yet I am very gratified and happy that I was so busy! If I will have another chance I still hope to be able to direct again." Gigi's family and friends were also very supportive. Her mother and husband took time to keep her company and encourage her. Her husband even prepared Spanish omelet for the crew. Their adopted puppy Luna also played a role! Gigi said, "Everyone said that working with animals was the hardest, but I realized that Luna wasn't afraid of the camera and was very sharp. I am very proud of this daughter! Haha!" Gigi even invited many friends in the business to guest star, including Shaun Tam Chun Yin, Yumiko Cheng Hei Yi, Ken Hung Cheuk Lap, Hotcha's Crystal and others. Tam Chun Yin was even the photographer for the film. * (2012/06/16) This year will be the 15th anniversary of the Hong Kong Hand Over. To commemorate this special day, the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in London worked with England's Terrocotta Film Festival to select 15 films that represented Hong Kong. These 15 films included A SIMPLE LIFE (TOH JEH), INFERNAL AFFAIRS (MO GAN DOH), LIFE WITHOUT PRINCIPLE (DUET MING GUM), ONE ARMED SWORDSMAN (DUK BEI DOH) and THE BOUNTY (YUEN HUNG). THE BOUNTY was even the only film that has not been released in Hong Kong yet. So far it has only had one world premiere at the Udine Far East Film Festival. THE BOUNTY is scheduled for a June 21st release. Although the film is an action comedy, its story is quite meaningful. In one scene Chapman To Man Jat out of justice took care of the RubberBand drummer Lai Man played sugar cane gang leader. The villagers in order to thank their hero brought many gifts, one of which included calligraphy "Courage To Do What's Easy". Director Fung Chi Chiang deliberated turned the word "Just" into "Easy" to poke fun at certain people in the society. Often they would choose to lend a hand on whether it was easy or hard. * (2012/06/16) William Chan Wai Ting, Michelle Wai (Si Nga), Irene Wan Bik Ha, Derek Tsang Kwok Cheung and others two nights ago attended the film TRIAD (JAT JIK)'s wrap banquet. 10 pounds thinner, William said that the shoot was very tough. He almost had to run in every scene and joked that being chased was more tiring than chasing someone. He also said that on the first day his face was already swollen from the stunt team's kicks. Si Nga pointed out that William was in quite a hurry that day, he did not even noticed that he stepped on her hand. She joked that the scar on her left hand still has not faded. Was she mad at William? She said that she was not and joked that seeing his face swollen from getting kick she was no longer angry. William and Si Nga played a couple for second time. Last time in EX (CHIN DOH) they had many intimate scene. Si Nga said that this time was not as passionate as last time. In addition they had chemistry and trust. Was Si Nga afraid that William's girlfriend Charlene Choi Cheuk Yin would be mad after watching it? William immediately said to her, "I am telling you don't worry! We have worked together many times, you are the safest." Si Nga joked that she was already pardoned. In addition, Wan Bik Ha played the mob big sister and had foul language scenes. She felt that this was closer to real life and everyone would be able to relate. She also said that playing the big sister felt interesting. It was a new attempt to show a different side of her. * (2012/06/16) The Johnnie To Kei Fung produced, Soi Cheang Bo Shui directed, Anthony Wong Chau Sun, Shawn Yue Man Lok, Guo Xiaodong, Barbie Hsu, Gordon Lam Ka Tung and Josie Ho Chiu Yi starred MOTORWAY (CHEH SAU) will open in Hong Kong and the Mainland on the 21st. Yesterday the team appeared at the Shanghai International Film Festival. As this film festival's first official press conference, the all star line up made everyone look forward to the film. As his fourth film this year, Yue Man Lok said that actually in MOTORWAY he was the most masculine and was a little more yuppie. "MOTORWAY is even more exciting and intense than my other films, it is even crueler. This character represents the conditions of many young people now, he has individuality but doesn't really socialize with others. Yet he has a never wavering spirit." Reporters asked whether he loved cars or women? He said, "Now I only love cars, I have to be the coolest driver." Wong Chau Sun in the film played soon to retire veteran cop but was the hidden car god of the police. He admitted that he actually did not like to drive. "I played a cop who is a car god, but when I played him, the director only shot the scenes in which I was in the vehicle in the parking lot to be safe. It wasn't unexciting or fun at all." * (2012/06/15) JESSICA CODE two nights ago held its 9th anniversary party at Central and Michelle Chen, Jacquelin Chong Si Man and Elanne Kong Yeuk Lam were among the guest list. Michelle Chen said that her film with Donnie Yen Chi Tan, TOGETHER, has already been completed. Later she will work on another Hong Kong film. Michelle Chen said that she grew up on Hong Kong films and hoped to have a chance to work with Peter Chan Ho Sun and Stephen Chow Sing Chi. Although she met Chan Ho Sun once, at the time she did not feel right about recommending herself. Thus when she would have a chance to see Chow Sing Chi she definitely would muster up the courage to tell him. As long as she would be able to work with Sing Yeh, she would not mind reducing her salary in half or playing ugly for laughs. She said, "Actually a goddess can be very ugly too, that way everyone would get a surprise. (Aren't you afraid of rumors with Sing Yeh?) No, nothing is nothing, time can prove everything." She also said that she came to Hong Kong to make movies more and her Cantonese has already become decent. She claimed to be half a Hong Konger. * (2012/06/15) Tony Leung Ka Fai two nights ago appeared on a now program. He said that he was on summer vacation. Originally he planned to travel but different events all around the world like earthquake and flooding in Taiwan. He said, "Actually as long as the family is together, anywhere is fine." He said that although he would be off until September, in August he might have to promote his two new films COLD WAR (HONG JIN) and TAI CHI 0. He was not afraid of that because he has always known promoting was tougher than performing. * (2012/06/15) Raymond Chow Man Wai, Ting Pui, Choi Woo Ping, Nancy Sit Ka Yin, Anthony Lau Wing and Ip Chun two nights ago attended the documentary film THE BRILLIANT LIFE OF BRUCE LEE premiere. Once linked to Bruce Lee, Ting Pui appeared in a cat design shirt that she wore in a photo with Bruce Lee 40 years ago. Watching a movie about Bruce Lee, Ting Pui admitted that she was reminded of a lot of memories. Ultimately when Bruce Lee passed away it was quite shocking. Over 40 years many criticized her but she overcame it. She even managed to become tolerant. She said ,"Now I got a gold coin! However I still have to thank the fans' support of Bruce Lee, his spirit will never die!" Ting Pui also said that Bruce Lee has made many movies but they never had a chance to work together. However she always planned to publish a book about Bruce Lee. She talked about it for ten years but it was very hard to find someone who has the same idea as her to work with. Thus it was still in negotiation. She would not give up though as she continued to organize information about Bruce Lee. she hoped to spread his philosophy and Jeet Kune Do. If the book will be published, will she send a copy to Bruce Lee's wife and family? Ting Pui admitted that she will send one to Bruce Lee's daughter because when he passed away she was still very little. Ting Pui also said that after Bruce Lee's passing she suffered a lot, but she never thought about suicide. With all the negativity now, she hoped to bring Bruce Lee's spirit and experience to the next generation and the message of no one should give up on life. * (2012/06/15) Shawn Yue Man Lok's new film MOTORWAY (CHEH SAU) will be released simultaneously next Thursday (21st) in Hong Kong and the Mainland. In the film he and Big S (Barbie Hsu) had romantic scenes. He even had to keep pursuing Big S, who kept on rejecting him. Luckily in real life that has not happened to him yet. While in pursuit of Big S he drove in circles around her, which frightened her because she did not know how his driving was. She was afraid of being scarred! Big S joked that on the day of the shoot the crew kept telling her not to worry, which made her from being not worried to being somewhat stressed. Later after she and Lok Jai communicated and learned that his driving was top notch, she was no longer worried. Actually this was the third time that she worked with Lok Jai. She said that everyone had a pleasant working experience. She even discovered that Lok Jai's acting quite was a pleasant surprise as it improved a lot. When they worked together they had spark. His Putonghua was very fluent with a Taiwanese accent, which made her feel very close. * (2012/06/14) Jessica C. worked for the first time with Jaycee Chan (Fong Cho Ming), Vivian Dawson (Kam Wing), Xia Yu and others on the comedy action film DOUBLE TROUBLE (BO DOH SEUNG HUNG) and admitted the she fell in love with action film. She said that in one scene when she was dangling from the ceiling, she was reminded of Tom Cruise in MISSION IMPOSSIBLE. The more she performed the more alive she felt. Even if she was dangling all night she had no complain, as if she has become the female Tom Cruise. Jessica C. fortunately had long limbs so when she shot this ceiling scene she was able to handle it. In the story she stole a secret file, in order to avoid the guards she could only become spider woman and dangle on the ceiling. Jessica C used her long limbs to "prop" herself on the ceiling while acting. She excitedly said, "The director and the Jackie Chan Stuntman Association have taken all the safety precaution, with mats on the ground. I also wore wires so I performed with ease. I tried to extend my arms and legs as much as they could and stuck to the wall tightly. The feeling was very interesting, this stunt reminded me of Tom Cruise being dangled in mid air in MISSION IMPOSSIBLE. Although every time we shot in the ceiling, we could not take too long because the arms and the legs would easily get numb. I fell several times, it was like a physical training." Fong Cho Ming and Jessica C both had a series of stunts in the film. They both had their physical limits tested, but Cho Ming also had to eat dirt. Cho Ming said, "This scene truly was an endless chase and an endless fight, trying to get you killed. In one chase scenes on a construction site, I even had to jump from four floors up into a pile of white dirt. Every time I ended up with a mouthful of dirt. For this scene I don't know how much dirt I swallowed, my mouth felt like I was taking medicated powder. It was very hard to take." [ BLAH OF THE WEEK ] Columns, Reviews, Interviews 1. MING PAO DAILY, JUNE 17 2012, FILM WORDS SADAKO COMEBACK DRAGS ITS FEET The 1998 Hideo Nakata directed, Nanako Matsushima and Hiroyuki Sanada starred RING was an international sensation that not only shocked East Asia but even the Hollywood version was a hit. This Japanese horror films' successful element lay in the scare tactics of the video age. A haunted video and the phone brings the death curse. The most frightening is the long haired female ghost Sadako who climbs out of the television screens in home after home, thus the film created box office miracles all over. SADAKO 3D Familiar Looking Back then the horror came from the video and the land line phone. Ten years later time and technology both have advanced. 14 years later in SADAKO 3D the video has been lost, as it was transferred to the computer at every home and the smart phone that everyone has. The curse has entered very facet and no longer needs to cook up midnight and ring curse, in broad daylight it can also kill at any time! This new film of course also attracts female viewers who like to make a big deal out of nothing. Yet with all the changes the film still seems familiar. Ultimately it is limited to the recycling of old ideas, it can hardly be as shocking as the first film. In the story a suicide video is spread around online. Reportedly anyone who has seen it has committed suicide. Yet the more horrifying it is and the more it is banned the more people try to search for it. Female lead Satomi Ishihara plays a teacher in a girls' high school. Some female students after watching the video died mysteriously. The police investigates. Strangely this female teacher has a supernatural ability and lives after watching the video. She in order to save her boyfriend even enters an abandoned well to battle the female ghost Sadako. This time the new 3D version is Tsutomu Hanabusa drected, the performance is only average. Blatantly cooking up mystery yet dragging its feet, the film is not direct enough. In comparison to big Hollywood productions, this film's 3D special effects remain child's play and lacks new scare tactics. Long haired Sadako crawls out of the screen and turns into many spiders, which can only occasionally make some girls scream. Speaking of which, back then with the first film and the sequel, girls screamed while guys cracked up. Actually watching this type of horror film at the movies is just to be one of the crowd. Women who watch at their quiet homes at night may be scared even more. Reason Lacking, Behind the Times Thinking As for dragging its feet, it seems to be the Japanese "reserved" specialty that is unlike how direct people in the West are. SADAKO 3D's female teacher knows fully that the students died after the suicide video possessed them. Yet during the police investigation she keeps her mouth shut. Actually whether the curse is real or not she should clearly make a statement for the police to handle, how can she hide it? Next week's Japanese mystery film release THE WINGS OF KIRIN will be much better. That film also has a male teacher who hides the fact behind the students' demise, the reason of which is to prevent it from affecting the students' future. Yet it is a bad deed with good intention, as the detective angrily chastises the teacher for making the matter worse for the students. Everyone knows, Eastern officials and civilians are used to hiding and covering up to keep quiet. This type of face first tradition should be brutally criticized and transparency must be strengthen. In addition, SADAKO 3D's female lead has had the power to fend off evil since she was little. Her screams can make ghosts vanish. Originally this is a strong suit for saving herself and others, yet she also hides it out of fear that others would treat her like a monster. I feel this type of self pity and shut in mentality are even worse, and do not match the modern world that values individuality. Basically, different mutant super power heroes are popular around the world today. Why does she have to hide her own super power? Ultimately SADAKO 3D is just conventional. Lacking in reason and behind the times in thinking, it is even more self shut in than THE RING. It has no way to adapt the free and open new technology age break through. (three out of five stars) THE RAID: REDEMPTION Has No Logic At All As for the Welsh director Gareth Evans shot in Indonesia film THE RAID: REDEMTPION, it has been called the most violent small budget action film internationally in recent years. The entire film is a special police force's raid on a mob building in Jakarta. The story has no logic at all, only explosions and blood. The martial art action is particularly sharp. This film is suitable for people who love to watch brutal fights. It has a surreal hellish feel, but the plot is lacking. Truly it is not as much fun as the fights in the Thai film ONG BAK or the absurd fun of Hong Kong film GALLANTS (DA LUI TOI). (two out of five stars) - SHEK KEI 2. TA KUNG PAO, JUNE 17 2012, BRUCE LEE DOCUMENTARY IS UNVEILED The Bruce Lee Museum has been talked about for years but still not been built, but a documentary about Bruce Lee's life has already been completed. THE BRILLIANT LIFE OF BRUCE LEE held its premiere last Friday and attracted many Bruce Lee fans. The venue was sold out as they relived Lee's brief yet brilliant life. THE BRILLIANT LIFE OF BRUCE LEE interviewed Lee's family, childhood friends, acting elders, colleagues and juniors, adding a lot of information to Bruce's life. Bruce Lee taught Chinese kung fu in the U.S. because he also taught foreigners Chinese instructors tried to push him out. Finally he accepted the challenge from a Master Wong. They agreed that if Master Wong won, Bruce Lee could no longer instruct foreigners. Finally of course Bruce Lee won and was able to continue to instruct foreigners. Bruce Lee's wife Linda openly described this duel for the first time. She said that afterward Bruce Lee was very dissatisfied that he took three minutes to defeat his opponent. Also during the duel, he had to catch his breath from chasing his opponent as he realized that he needed to get into better shape. From other information sources, Bruce Lee did not win that duel easily and the duel was quite an inspiration for Bruce Lee. According to Linda, perhaps this duel was the reason that Bruce Lee went fully into physical training. Later in the film Wu Fung's interview als confirmed Lee's view on fighting. Bruce Lee asked Wu Fung if he knew anyone who could beat him. Wu of course did not. Lee said that he was referring to someone bigger and faster. Thus, Bruce Lee was a martial arts who spent his life in pursuit of strength and speed in actual battle. Bruce Lee aside from punches and kicks was best known for his nunchaku. THE BRILLIANT LIFE OF BRUCE LEE interviewed Lee's good friend and disciple Dan Inosanto. He pointed out that he taught Bruce Lee how to use nunchaku and magic wand, but a few months later Bruce Lee was better at them than he was. Thus Bruce Lee's diligence and talent truly were extraordinary. Another new information was Bruce Lee's good friend pointed out that Bruce learned to Cha Cha from a Filipino. He and the Filipino people truly had quite a connection. (Inosanto was also Filipino). Bruce Lee was called Three Kick Lee. According to rumors the nickname came from his ability to kick three times in the air or perform three roundhouse kicks in a row. Raymond Chow Man Wai in the documentary confirmed that Bruce in his first film THE BIG BOSS only kicked three times and refused to kick again (he thought it would be unrealistic). Thus the director called him Three Kick Lee, later Lo Wei took over as the director. Leonard Ho Koon Cheung thought that Three Kick Lee was a great nickname and thus promoted it. The writer has heard this years ago from Director Lo, this time was the best confirmation. Among the elders interviewed in the documentary, Shek Kin and Lam Giu have already passed away. Very regrettably they were unable to see THE BRILLIANT LIFE OF BRUCE LEE. The film also regrettably did not include the interview with the father of American Tae Kwon Do Jhoon-Goo Rhee. Yet ultimately, the Federation of Hong Kong Filmmakers directed THE BRILLIANT LIFE OF BRUCE LEE is the most important Bruce Lee documentary and is worthy of praise. 3. APPLE DAILY, JUNE 16 2012, TAIWAN IS BURNING: TAKING THE HEAVY DIN TAO, FUNG KAI IS INVINCIBLE Are they crazy? Taiwan people have the type of guts, first Wei Te-Sheng spent every cent on the romantic film CAPE NO. 7, then the historical WARRIORS OF THE RAINBOW: SEEDIQ BALE. In terms of thrills he was not match for director Fung Kai's DIN TAO, without love, without historical topic it is an alternative film. The shocking part took place at the advanced screening only one viewer attended. Later the director half jokingly said that at that moment he truly thought about choosing a more comfortable way of euthanasia. The film went from nothing to existence to finally becoming this Lunar New Year's Taiwan box office champion. The fact was it reflected that Taiwan people's acceptance of topic variety while Hong Kong people were still lingering in the gentle warm of YOU ARE THE APPLE OF MY EYE. -HO WING NING Hong Kong Release Date: June 21 Taiwan film DIN TAO: LEADER OF THE PARADE's director Fung Kai earlier came to Hong Kong to promote the film. He said that he has worked in Taiwan television production for over 10 years. This was his first time as a film director and the process was like a roller coaster ride. He clearly remembered that the film during the Lunar New Year held an advanced screening in Taiwan. The Taiwan presidential election was taking place. Fung Kai said, "I chose Hsi Men Ding for audience appreciation. The cinema called, said only one person went and asked me if I wanted to go. I said, 'I would go even if it's just one person. I have to hand him the present personally.' When I got to the cinema the movie already let out and the person already went somewhere else. We had to chase him down to come back for the appreciation gift." Advanced Screening Only Had One Viewer If only one ticket was sold for a 400 seat cinema, the director naturally would feel bad. Fung Kai on the way home kept thinking why. He said that this was the saddest New Year in years. He thought, "I didn't understand, I have done everything that I could. Earlier I have shown many free screenings and the audience's word of mouth was great, I just understand this result. I was upset for an entire week, I am not joking. At that moment I really thought about how to die without pain. That New year was truly sad. I was very disappointed as I thought that the two year effort all went to waste. Then I went from the South to the North to promote. Gradually the word of mouth came, someone formed groups on facebook to share their experience. Fung Kai talking about it seemed relaxed, but the pressure of selling only one ticket almost gave the film a death sentence. "Actually my wish of directing was very humble, I didn't want to make money. It was fine as long as it didn't lose money." With word of mouth, DIN TAO became this year's Taiwan Lunar New Year film box office champion with NT$370 million box office. Fung Kai said that he had the grand dream of directing since childhood. He came from an artist family. His mother was a famous producer. Since childhood Fung Kai has been on the set. He said, "I grew up in the business. Almost every movie unit I have worked on. I felt being a director was very prestigious, on the set he had quite a presence. Yet later the film market became poor. I switched to television. Yet I still haven't given up on the dream of directing." Two years ago by chance he ran into the Chio Tian Folk Drums and Arts Troupe, Fung Kai decided to turn their story into a movie. "Din Tao in Taiwan is very popular. They wore the Third Prince likeness and danced around the shore with the sound of percussion, a little like a lion dance. Taiwan people would feel that Din Tao people would be school drop outs or juvenile delinquents, but this folk troupe every year would wear the over 20 kilogram Din Tao likeness and ran a lap around the Taiwan shore. The intention was to collect all the tormented souls back to the Taichung temple for transgression. I admire their spirit very much and am deeply touched." When the script was being conceived, Fung Kai claimed to have turned down NT$50 million in jobs. He said, "Including my own investment, if it bombed I really had to kill myself." He thought that Din Tao although was a very localized story, the father and son relationship and the inspirational spirit in the film could still be related to in three lands on both sides of the strait. It was also the reason that he made this alternative topic. Pressure From Not Using Stars Fung Kai daringly cast Blackie Ko (Or Sau Leung)'s son Alan Ko (Or Yau Lun), Taiwan television program host Alien Huang (Wong Hung Sing). Neither were much of a draw in the film industry. During casting he also received pressure from investors, but Fung Kai persisted. "Before the shoot the boss suggested actors with draw, I said no. Those big shots needed two weeks advanced appointment for a face to face script discussion, and three months for them to read a script. If after they read they wouldn't make the film, I would have to spend time to find someone. At least Alien and Or Yau Lun were very sincere. Before the shoot they were willing to spend time to practice. During the shoot they didn't complain even when we went overtime. Which of those big stars would pay attention to you." Synopsis: Inheriting The Livelihood DIN TAO is based on the Taichung Chio Tian Folk Drums and Arts Troupe's real story. The so-called Din Tao is similar to Hong Kong's lion dance. Taiwan people like to worship the so-called Third Prince Nezha. The unique electronic music and choreography became its specialty. In the film Tai came from a Din Tao family. After leaving home to study music in Taipei and dropping out, he returned home and because his father's leadership was challenged he jumped in to take over. Under his father's traditional ideas and being looked down upon, he had no confidence even from this troupe's members. His rival Yin's contempt triggers Tai's determination. He decides to use his own way to face the difficulty with the troupe, lead them to carry the drums, climbing mountains and going over waters on the road to go around the island and define the tradition of Din Tao anew. Alan Ko In The Name Of THE Father Events happened a little like DIN TAO's story. Father passed away and son inherits his father's business. His son in the name of his father swears to create an achievement. In reality Alan Ko (Or Yau Lun) is only left with sorrow. Earlier Or Yau Lun starred in DIN, he did not rely on his late father's relationships at all. If he did he did not need to drift in show business after ten years or never imagined the film's Taiwan release would have a shocking NT$370 million box office figure. Sleep In A Trailer During Apprenticeship Or Yau Lun said that the male lead in the film came from a Din Tao family, which somewhat resembled his show business family background. "Because Papa often said that anything could be done, I admired his perseverance at work the most. The film's subject was very close to what Papa said. In Taiwan Din Tao workers usually are school drop out or people on the edge of society. The entire story is very inspirational and touching." In order to practice playing the drum well and wearing that 20 kilogram Nezha costume to dance, Or Yau Lun studied with the Chio Tian Folk Drums and Arts Troupe. "They live in trailers, every morning they practice drums very early. After the first day, I couldn't even eat as my hands kept on shaking. Because the drum sticks were so thick, I had blisters on my hands. Yet before they recovered I had to practice again. This was the spirit that Old Pa gave me being demonstrated in the production." Actually luck was not definite. When back then Taiwan's highest grossing film CAPE NO. 7 began production, Or Yau Lun missed an opportunity. "At the time director Wei Te-Sheng asked me to make CAPE NO. 7, at the time I had to work on the company' series and turned it down. Looking back I regret it a little." - Wan Man Chi Alien Ditches Show Luo Originally named Wong Hung Sing, Taiwan artist Alien Huang (Siu Gwai) along with Piggy Show Luo (Law Chi Cheung) rose to fame as the hosts of the Taiwan television program 100% ENTERTAINMENT. All along his hosting work was more outstanding than his film work, but the film DIN TAO made him a NT$100 million box office actor. Alien said earlier when he came to promote the film in Hong Kong, "Because the film starred me and Or Yau Lun, neither of us were top actors but the film had such a performance we had a reason to be happy. I at most am at the second tier!" Rapidly Learn To Ride The Ring Of Fire Alien admitted that before hand he never thought that it would be such a big hit. He believed that the story touched people's hearts. Without heroism it became the key to attract the audience. Playing the drum, climbing mountains and going over water in the film, he had to train hard before hand. Alien said, "The emotions and the honor that the script described moved me. Two scenes in particular were especially tough. In one scene I had make up on to play a ghost god. Aside from every movement had to be convincing, I also had to run into the ring of fire and put my feet on the fire. The master spent his entire life to practice, I only spent several months to accomplish it. How can I not be scared. Once heavily favored by the Emperor, the Guillotines are deemed expendable once Emperor Qian Long ascends to the throne and adopts Western ideas and technology. To consolidate his power under a new regime, the Emperor continues to use the Guillotines to persecute the conquered Han Chinese in a reign of terror and oppression. Led by master fighter Leng, the top ranked guillotine squad consists of five young warriors: Mu, San, Tai, Hutu and Buka. Serving the Qing Court unquestioningly, they have never failed in 348 missions to eliminate their targets. But their success has made them arrogant and complacent. Their next mission is to eliminate Wolf and his Shepherd gang. During the operation, the squad manages to trap Wolf. Just as they are about to execute him, the squad commander orders that he be captured alive. He secretly plans to use Wolf as a pawn in his bid for power. Wolf’s gang of rebels ambushes the Guillotines in their moment of hesitation. Wolf escapes, taking Mu hostage. With reports that Wolf has fled to the outer frontiers, the squad tracks him to a remote village outpost. On the other hand, the Emperor has sent his most trusted agent Du for the same mission and most importantly, to end the era of the Guillotines by replacing cold weapons with firearms. If only they make one false move, they will become the hunted. Facing annihilation, Leng and his Guillotines must outfight and outwit enemies from both sides. [ THE FILM CATALOGUE ] An elite squad of young imperial bodyguards, trained to use the deadly guillotines, is the last line of defense to the Emperor’s Court. But little do they realize the conspiracy behind their mission... --- [ Entertainment URL ] MEDIA ASIA http://www.mediaasia.com EMPEROR MOTION PICTURES http://www.emp.hk PEGASUS MOTION PICTURES http://www.pegasusmovie.com WE PICTURES http://www.wepictures.com CINEMA POPULAR http://www.cinemapopular.com MEI AH http://www.meiah.com NEW ASIA ENTERTAINMENT GROUP http://www.aeghk.com GOLDEN SCENE http://www.goldenscene.com Commercial Radio http://www.crhk.com.hk Television Broadcast Limited http://www.tvb.com.hk --- [ NORTH AMERICA AREA CONCERTS ] Courtesy of our neighbors at : High Level Entertainment's Concert & Event News Center http://www.levelhigh.com http://www.geocities.com/NapaValley/1721/hlecaen.htm * ALAN TAM SHINE A LIGHT CHARITY CONCERT CANADA TOUR 2012 DATE AND TIME: October 13 2012 VENUE LOCATION: Queen Elizabeth Theatre 649 Cambie Street Vancouver BC TICKET PRICES: VIP CA$250, 180, 110, 90, 70, 48 TICKET OUTLET LOCATIONS: ONLINE: http://www.cantonproductions.com/canton/entertainment/alan_tam.html 604-295-4800 MAL Audio Ltd Union Square 1033-8300 Capstan Way, Richmond AM-Call Wireless Crystal Mall 1211-4500 Kingsway, Burnaby Fotodigio Studio Ltd Union square Suite 1261, 8338 Capstan Way, Richmond World Vision 2218-13353 Commerce Parkway, Richmond * ALAN TAM SHINE A LIGHT CHARITY CONCERT CANADA TOUR 2012 DATE AND TIME: October 7 2012 VENUE LOCATION: Southern Jubilee 1415 14 Avenue Northwest Calgary AB Canada TICKET PRICES: VIP CA$150, 100, 80, 60, 40 TICKET OUTLET LOCATIONS: ONLINE: http://www.cantonproductions.com/canton/entertainment/alan_tam.html 403-889-2200 Wah Loong Chinese Herbs Ltd Unit 9, 1003-9650 Harvest Hills Blvd., N.E.
