Aside from a series of kiss scenes with Shiga Lin Si Nga, he also had intimate scenes with Miki Yeung Oi Kun and Monie Tung Man Lei. Yesterday he and Shiga shot their first kiss scene and even arranged for reporters to visit the set. Pakho revealed that every time his character felt lonely he would have intimate relationship with the disposable "bubble wrap girl" Shiga and get rid of her when he was done. Thus they would have many intimate scenes. Before the shoot, the director asked what Pakho's limits were. Pakho said that he had no limit but in the movie he would. In the film he would intensely kiss. Yesterday morning Pakho and Shiga tried their marks and he said that it did not feel good. Perhaps because it was too early. If it was in the evening or at night his body would be in the mood. Thus that night he and Shiga would have more passionate scenes like embracing and clothing removal. Pakho also said that this was his "first" film with passionate scenes, but Shiga joked that his life experience was richer. He admitted that was true. When asked whether they fell for each other, Pakho worried that after the gratification of the kiss they would lose freshness. He also pointed out that Shiga wore lip moisturizer, thus after kissing her he felt very moisturized. Although in the film he also had intimate scenes with Yeung Oi Kun and Tung Man Lei, but the most passionate was still with Shiga. When Shiga heard that Pakho gave her his most passionate first time, she worried that she would become the target of online criticism! * (2012/05/23) Stephen Fung Tak Lun and Chivas The Modern Gentlemen 2012 contest winner Bryan Lau two days ago attended the Cannes Film Festival and walked the red carpet to personally participate and experience the global film industry event. Chivas has always supported the film industry. This time it will support the "FilmAid International" event that helps the vulnerable groups around the world with the power of film. Since 1999, the event has shown films in refugee camps and vulnerable groups for their entertainment and also instructed them on film productions to tell their own stories with film. Fung Tak Lun and Bryan attended the Cannes Film Festival in a show of unique gentlemen charm, which coincided with Chivas brand image. Fung Tak Lun said that he was very honored to be able to attend the Cannes Film Festival and gather with international superstars. His new film series TAI CHI will soon be released in North America, Europe and Asia. On this trip to the Cannes Film Festival he ran into many friends in the film industry and had a rather full harvest. Fung Tak Lun also praised Bryan's unique charm; Bryan said that he was very excited and nervous about being in Cannes and thanked the label for giving him this unforgettable opportunity of a lifetime. * (2012/05/23) Angelababy gave many first times for her new film FIRST TIME. Aside from the theme song SMILE OK? that her idol Jay Chou (Chow Kit Lun) wrote for her, she even came up for a dramatic version music video for her theme song. She convinced her brother Keven to perform for the first time in place of Mark Chao (Chiu Yau Ting). On the day of the shoot, Angelababy, her brother Keven and a group of volunteering good friends went to a Clearwater Bay school to prepare. In a school uniform, Baby still matched his brother who was still a student well. Unfortunately her brother was very shy and was very nervous about his first performance. In one scene a group of female students surrounded him in a chat, he did not know what to do. Baby saw her brother's face turning red and could not help but giggle. During the entire shoot, Baby very patiently instructed her brother and often joked and chatted with him to calm his nerves. Baby pointed out that her brother has always been introverted, a shy guy. Thus when she learned that she had to shoot this music video, she immediately thought her brother to play the younger version of the film character. She hoped through his performance to help her brother with his courage. She said that this time she convinced her brother to perform with his favorite PSP video game. Baby participated a lot in this music video. Aside from performing, she also had an understanding of posts outside acting like story creation and camera positioning. "I am very interested in very aspect, hopefully in the future I will have a chance to be a director in training." Speaking of the crush with her brother, was it awkward? Baby said that it was not instead she thought her brother's nervous expression and frowning were very interesting. The funniest was when she and her brother were supposedly being romantic, he kept reminding her, "Sister, remember to buy the video game for me!" Keven described his first performance as tough. He pointed out that he had no talent in this area. he also had to learn to play guitar on the spot for the shoot. However he spent a rare day with her sister, which he was very happy about. * (2012/05/22) Jaycee Chan (Fong Cho Ming) teams with Golden Horse Best Actor Xia Yu and Jessica C. in new Taiwan director Chang Hsun-Wei's film DOUBLE TROUBLE (BO DOH SEUNG HUNG). This was Cho Ming's first action film. Although he had no kung fu background, he was proud of his father for his great kung fu and making so many years of exciting action films. When the director asked him to perform in DOUBLE TROUBLE he immediately agreed as he very much wanted a taste of an action film production. As Mommy Joan Lin (Lam Fung Giu) was rather nervous about her son in an action film. In order to keep her calm, Jackie Chan sent a group of Jackie Chan Stuntman Association members to watch Cho Ming and assist with the production. Cho Ming in the process not only humbly learned from the Jackie Chan Stuntman Association but also performed with an effort. Even though the production prepared a double for him he still would rather personally perform the stunts. Xia Yu also praised his professionalism. He also "risked his life" with Cho Ming in their performance. Cho Ming admitted that during the shoot he often bruised his arms and legs. Luckily he had the Jackie Chan Stuntman Association's elders for guidance. In one scene he and Jessica C. had a chase on top of a bus and almost lost his life. Cho Ming pointed out in that scene he jumped from eight floors above and never thought that this fight scene on top of a vehicle would take 8 jumps before completion. Once he even fell from the top of the vehicle to the ground and almost got a concussion. That day he was bruised all over. After this scene he could relate to his father's years in action film and was truly convinced. Did Cho Ming want to follow his father's action comedy route? Cho Ming said that his father's action scenes shot the dramatic and action scenes together. The fight scenes would have a lot of comedy, but now action scenes were all shot separately. On the spot additions of comedy was very hard. He this time had to revive his father's action comedy formula, which was truly very interesting. Jackie Chan recently at the Cannes Film Festival also praised Cho Ming's DOUBLE TROUBLE performance. He even joked that under his wife's orders he had to hard sell their son. Jessica C. like Cho Ming did not use a double and personally performed her stunts. For her first action film she was very nervous. Before the shoot she trained with the Jackie Chan Stuntman Association for awhile. Luckily she was used to exercising so physically she was able to handle it. Yet the day of the chase on top of the bus was truly a little thrilling. The Jackie Chan Stuntman Association stood guard on both sides of the bus. She almost fell. Luckily Cho Ming was fast enough to pull her in, but finally he was the one who fell. * (2012/05/22) The Media Asia invested movie about invisible auto racing, MOTORWAY (CHEH SAU), has already been scheduled for a Hong Kong release on June 21 and 22 in the Mainland. Jing Boran said, "Thank you End of the World! When single guys go to the movies, they have a good reason to grab the hand of the girls next to you!" "Captain" Yuen King Tin due to military service could not spend "Doomsday" with his brothers shoulder to shoulder. Chan Ho Sun chose this slot for the release, mainly after watching the rough cut all investors decided to move the release from the summer to New Year. The young and hot blooded qualities were so right for the joy of the New Year. Chan Ho Sun pointed out that THE GUILLOTINES was Lau Wai Keung's best film since the INFERNAL AFFAIRS (MO GAN DOH) film series and INITIAL D (TAU MAN JI D). The actor performances also surprised him. Yuen King Tin and Yue Man Lok were better than expected. Huang Xiaoming was so good that he surprised him. Jing Boran, Zhou Yiwei and Po Ba Gap were all cool. * (2012/05/20) Hugo Boss two nights ago held a fall and winter 2012 fashion show in Beijing. Chow Yun Fat was the surprise model as he brought back to life the "God of Gamblers" slow walk. When he saw Carina Lau Ka Ling in the audience, he leaned over to give her a hug and a kiss. Then he turned around and chok like a super model. The applause was thunderous. Just turning 57 two days ago Chow Yun Fat held his wife's hand during his interview. Fat Gor was complimented as looking just like God of Gamblers. He humorously said, "I feel I look like (Donnie) Yen Chi Tan! Because he always wears red suit. Tonight before the official walk I only rehearsed once. I was nervous but it was pretty fun! As for how much the salary was it was a commercial secret, the best would be for you to ask Mrs. Chow!" As for birthday gift, he sweetly smiled and said that he already received his wife's kiss. Fat Soh coyly said, "I treat myself very well everyday!" Fat Gor continued, "I saw Lau Ka Ling in the audience, we shook hands, hug and kissed. She is very pretty! I don't know if the label believes in fengshui, thinking today (May 18) is a good day and choosing today for me to model. Later I will celebrate with my wife and friends." Speaking of Gong Li's former husband finally admitting that they have been divorced for 3 years already, her good friend Fat Gor said that he had no idea but wished her well in finding a good mate. As for Andy Lau Tak Wa becoming a father, Fat Gor asked whether he had a boy or a girl then he gave the camera an exaggerated stare and said, "Wa Jai, congratulations!" He also revealed that lately he has been working on Wong Jing and Andrew Lau Wai Keung's new film LAST TYCOON (DAI SEUNG HOI) and even revealed that actually he and Wong Jing were born in the same month of the same year. * (2012/05/20) Aaron Kwok Fu Sing, Charlie Yeung Choi Nei, Annie Liu (Lau Sum Yau), Calvin Cheng Ka Sing and director Yim Ho two nights ago attended their film FLOATING CITY (FAU SING) charity premiere. Financial secretary John Tsang Chun Wa host the sail setting ceremony for box office success and being able to extend its warmth. Because Wu Fing was the charity group Warm Hearters ambassador, he represented the organization to thank the film for its support. Sing Sing revealed that he is busy with Charlie's debut as a director, CHRISTMAS ROSE (SING DAN MUI GWAI). In the film he will play a lawyer. Because he has never played this type of character it was considered a big break through. So far he is already used to the lengthy dialogue. The film has more internal struggle scenes for the actors, as for whether it will have action scenes he kept people guessing. Sing Sing said that he had scenes with every actor. Did he feel Charlie would succeed as a director? Sing Sing praised, "Maybe because she is an actress too, she knows some things can be done better. With a complete script, the actors have even greater rooms to develop. I think Charlie probably wouldn't be too nervous because she has so many people who support her around her. She also would try her best to express her direction." Sing Sing said that although sometimes the shoot took multiple takes, it would only be because Charlie was seeking excellence. Since he was so busy, has he consoled his rumored girlfriend Lynn Xiong (Hung Doi Lam)'s father who was reportedly ailing? Sing Sing took back his smile and seriously said no response. Reporters said that Lynn praised him to be a good boyfriend. Sing Sing said, "Thank you, thank you, but I won't respond to other matter. (Did you give that three karat diamond ring?) No comment!" Speaking of Lynn saying that she felt pressured due to their high profile, which made her feel set up and framed. Sing Sing again said no comment. At work he did not want to talk about personal matter. He also asked the media to console Lynn for him. Sing Sing continued, "I watch the news too, since she clarified I don't need to respond. It's so dull, I am here to promote the new film." Lynn said that she wanted to bring her father in support. Sing Sing again said no comment and gave the same response when asked about the ring again. He even said that the media would write whatever they like. Charlie revealed that directing has not been difficult on her. Instead she rather enjoyed the process, perhaps because she was mentally prepared for what she would face long ago. She would not say that she ran into any difficulty. If she had any issue she would speak with the actors. Did she have any directing ability? Charlie said, "I don't, I have worked with most of the actors. We are like a group of friends. Although the film is pretty heavy, we have had a lot of fun making it. I would constantly come out without make up. (Aren't you afraid of someone getting your photo?) That's not important, I am just becoming myself." Charlie said that the film is slated for an early June completion. The post production might take some time. Investors would like to release the film in December. * (2012/05/20) Jackie Chan's new film CHINESE ZODIAC made its Cannes Film Festival appearance. On May 18, Big Brother Jackie Chan led Kwon Sang-Woo, Liao Fan, and three "Chan Girls" Yao Xingtong, Zhang Lanxin and Laura Weissbecker to a large scale press conference. At night they attended a beach party. The event even screened PROJECT A as a salute to Jackie Chan. At the press conference, each actors pointed out that Big Brother asked for "stylish and pretty fighting", which was already basic. He also wanted "fighting with thinking, trying different way of fighting in each action scene", every punch had to land, no stunt double. Thus after this shoot, the cast's action abilities could rival the SEAL team. As for working with a group of young actors, Big Brother admitted that the investment companies wanted to use big stars at first, but he worried that they could not give their all and ask for a lot. This time the producer also praised Big Brother for his professionalism. While shooting in Australia, one scene required extreme wind power to blow four people to mid air. Big Brother did not use a double. Under two degrees below zero Celsius temperature he was blown for several hours on the wires. Thus he thought Jackie Chan was like Superman when he was making a movie. Big Brother also said that for his family and his own safety, this film will be his final action film. From now on he would like to make movies with more sincerity and less action. * (2012/05/20) Joseph Cheng Yuen Cheung, Michelle Chen, and director Zero Chou Mei Ling on the 18th began their third day of promote for their film FA YEUNG (RIPPLE). The story touched him as he asked director Han Yan for an "encore" to watch it again. This time Iwai came to support director Han Yan. Although they only met recently, they got along famously due to common interests. Iwai with his first film LOVE LETTER won international film industry renown. FIRST TIME was also a pure romance, with an aesthetic romance of first love as its subject. Director Han Yan was very nervous when he learned that Iwai flew to Beijing for his work. After the screening, Iwai with satisfaction said to him, "The film moved me." He praised the film's music and story as great, as he rarely saw such a refreshing Mainland film. Shunji Iwai saw Baby on the screen for the first time and thought her aura was somewhat close to Japanese star Yu Aoi. Iwai and director Han Yan had lunch together and even asked director Han Yan to watch the film again. Director Han Yan admitted that he was not only surprised but also shocked. Iwai on the FIRST LOVE poster wrote in Japanese "I was moved" to cheer on the film. The leads Chiu Yau Ting and Baby also had many touching scenes that were worth savoring. Chiu Yau Ting played a lovably yet humorous romantic guy. When he saw Baby in the film, he climbed onto her balcony and romanced her remotely. Yet under the blazing sun he had to apply facial masks. Baby before the shoot said, "I have never a man use facial masks before, it was very hard for me not to laugh." Chiu Yau Ting said that he was rather humorous and funny, thus in the film the comedic performance to him brought "zero pressure", because privately when he was with friends he was very dumb. * (2012/05/19) Mike He and Ella Chen Chia Hua earlier appeared on a TVB Entertainment News channel interview to talk about their film BAD GIRLS. Ella said that while in school she liked to play sports. She learned that an elder classmate had a crush on her and asked a friend to tell her. Then they began to chat over the phone and pass notes. Siu Mei said that he passed notes to someone he liked at school, but the teacher confiscated them all. At the time for girls he even put on his father's suit to dates. Sister Deanie could not help but urge him to hurry and have another. Sister Deanie said, "If it's too much then later! However he has to no matter what, Lee Lam Lam had one when she was 50!" Two nights ago Sister Deanie was in great spirits. After receiving the award she talked about foreign films and even said that Lau Tak Wa was busy with his baby and could not attend. Speaking of winning so many awards that her arms was tired from accepting them, Deanie said, "Don't say that, I can accepting even without arms! The film is still in the cinemas! Thank you Italians for appreciating me!" When asked if she has seen Wa Jai's baby, she said, "Not yet! Don't bother her, having a baby is very tough!" She admitted that when she had her first she did not permit her friends to visit. She permitted visitors with the second one but she was dog tired. Sister Deanie felt that having a child was not easy and thus hoped everyone would give Wa Jai some space. She only sent text messages to Wa Jai but did not call to keep from bothering him. Did she ask him for photos? Sister Deanie said, "No! Even if he sent it I wouldn't want it, I am afraid that if it is leaked I would be blamed!" She said that the entire world was happy for Wa Jai. Did Wa Jai treat her to any ginger vinegar, Ip Tak Han said that she did not understand the tradition. "I told Wa Jai not to have any, ginger vinegar was bad for bones and teeth why would we still have to see it. Having ginger vinegar after having a baby truly isn't right!" Did she give Wa Jai any advice? Sister Deanie said, "I told him a long time ago, he also read a lot of books in preparation. He even talked to me about DNA like an expert, such a man is very hard to find!" Would she ask him to have another, Sister Deanie smiled and said, "That would depend on Mommy's health condition. Health is the most important. If it's too much they can wait until later, but they have to keep going. Lee Lam Lam had a child in her 50s without any problem. The most important was to have patience and love!" * (2012/05/18) Angelababy Yeung Wing, Marie Zhuge and Shawn Yue Man Lok two nights ago attended a fashion specialty store opening. Baby recently has been busy promoting her film FIRST TIME. In Shanghai a male fan hug her. She said that it was the first time she ran into such a situation, the fan was too enthusiastic. Did she first cover her chest? She said, "Of course, this is basic instinct. (What if the fan suddenly kisses you?) I would dodge it, but I would have to practice before hand. (Did Huang Xiaoming know that you were hug?) He would know if he watched the news, but he wouldn't have to worry. The fan meant well." Her co-star Mark Chao (Chiu Yau Ting) publicized his romance with Gao Yuanyuan. she wished them well and praised them as quite a pair. When would she and Xiaoming become public? She said that they were them and she was her. Speaking of Lynn Xiong (Hung Doi Lam)'s diamond ring, she also wished her well. Speaking of a music maker's alleged rape of a female artist, Baby read the report and said that when she went to the recording studio she would be all bothered and could not mind anything else. She also had her assistant with her and learned kung fu. No one would be able to get near her. * (2012/05/17) "Counterfeit Stephy Tang Lai Yun" Celia Kwok Wing Yi recently took the female lead in the online novel DONGGUAN FOREST based film YUT LO HEUNG SAI (A ROAD TO THE WEST). Celia said, "I will play the male lead's Hong Kong girlfriend and should have some passionate bed scenes. Right now I am very nervous, but I won't be naked. I will leave that to the more experienced Japanese or Taiwan actresses." Due to the daring subject, Jeana Ho Pui Yu reportedly resigned. Celia said, "The film has many characters, I don't know if it was recast. It doesn't matter if we don't get to work together though." Did she have her family's support? She said, "Yes, my family has been very supportive whether with my photo book or movie. Mommy even read the original DONGGUAN FOREST with me. She said I should try anything when I am still young." * (2012/05/17) Louis Koo Tin Lok and Jennifer Tse Ting Ting yesterday attended an electronic brand event. They attended as spokespeople and even introduced the latest music interactive platform. Ting Ting asked Goo Jai if it had his songs. Goo Jai said that it should have her brother Nicholas Tse Ting Fung's songs. Goo Jai loved new technology. After becoming a spokesperson he seemed to have become a salesperson. Friends constantly picked up goods through him. Later, Goo Jai and Lau Ching Wan will work on a fire fighting film. He will play a fire fighter. Aside from fire rescue, the film will also have diving and building collapse scenes. Thus it will be rather dangerous. He will have to take a series of training and be heavily insured. Goo Jai in the past worked on BURNING FLAME (LIT FOR HUNG SUM) and understood about the certain dangers. Yet accidents sometimes would be very hard to predict. Reporters said that fire fighters inevitably had to display their fit physique. Will he work out? He said that he did not know, but the wet performance probably would not appear in the fire scene. Reportedly a TVB female artist was raped at a recording studio, Goo Jai said that he had no idea. Has he heard about similar incident before? He said that when he stepped into the recording studio to sing it was already too much for him. [ BLAH OF THE WEEK ] Columns, Reviews, Interviews 1. APPLE DAILY, MAY 20 2012, ELECTRIC FILM ROAD CALVIN POON MAKES MOVIE LIKE PLAYING SOCCER KEEPING PLAYING DESPITE DEFEAT Instead of being negative and feeling Calvin Poon Yuen Leung's movies often failed, you may as well say that he positively keeps on trying despite defeat. A lyrics writer, soccer commentator and director, his movies are far less passionate than his soccer commentary and does not have as much variety as his lyrics, like TEN FIRE FIGHTING YOUTH's far reaching meaning and THE MOST BELOVED's gentle tact. Poon Yuen Leung says that the world would only remember two kinds of directors, the ones who make great films and the ones who are bad beyond belief. He is neither. The most important is the soccer ball is round, before the whistle is blown the match continues. Work, love is the same way. - HO WING NING Release Date: End of June Earlier Poon Yuen Leung did the interview in his Yau Ma Tei residence and office. Before talking about his new film SHADOWS OF LOVE, the soccer fan naturally has to talk about soccer that he has commentated on. In particular the 2010 World Cup elimination match between England and Germany. When Lampard's goal was called off, his response was louder than a soccer fan who bet his entire life saving. He screamed more than three times "it was in", claiming to be the hkgolden kids ranked god class soccer commentator, but some still complained that the speakers on their television sets at home were thus blown up from the yelling. Calling YOU ARE THE APPLE OF MY EYE Unreasonable Poon Yuen Leung due to conflict of interest claims that he never bets on soccer. He says, "I never bet on soccer, not only a ten buck bet. My huge reaction is because I believe very much in my first judgment, the ball went in. Soccer commentary is like making movies and writing lyrics, the ingredients are all there. The drama comes up how the creators blow them up. At the time I can say not for credit but for correctness 'Hey? The ball seems to be in, let's take a look at the slow motion shot first'. The result would have been completely different. So I would feel I am a creator, even in soccer commentary." As a soccer commentary he has no preference for any team, just like never betting on soccer he is looking for individuality. He can commentate more open, wild and without taboo. As for film Poon Yuen Leung says that it is also very commercial, he only hopes that it is commercial reasonably. He gives a complete case to explain what is reasonable. "My movies have always been commercial, I would make bed scenes and kiss scenes. Yet they have to meet the story progression. Like YOU ARE THE APPLE OF MY EYE it is commercial enough but its story is unreasonable. After Ko Chen-Tung pleasures himself in the classroom, as the disciplinary supervisor why would you change his seat to in front of Michelle Chen to keep an eye on him. Aren't you telling the female student to watch him pleasuring himself? This scene is a gimmick, I feel it's unreasonable and unacceptable." In the real world where box office determines the hero, Poon Yuen Leung feels that the world has only two types of directors who viewers would remember. He says, "One makes a good movie that people remember, I haven't yet. The other is very poor, luckily I am not yet either. If you want car chases and fights I know I can't make them, but at least if investors wants to make a woman oriented, more psychologically detailed movie they would think of me. In this area I still have a market." He says that making a movie that both has a market and pleases himself is the dream that every director is after. Yet before the match ends, you cannot tell whether he would be like this year's Manchester City that won the championship in the final 3 minutes. Loletta Poster In The Office In comparison to career, on the road of romance he and Rachel Lee Lai Chun have tangled for over 20 years and seemed to have blossomed and bare fruit. In the past Poon Yuen Leung rarely mentioned Loletta, today his answer is straight forward. Although he is not as bold as when he is talking about soccer and is still somewhat awkward, he feels marriage has no longer become important. He says, "I don't want to give anyone pressure, and I haven't think about it in particular." However somewhere out of sight in the office is a Loletta poster. He explains, "I asked someone to make the poster for Lee Lai Chun, so she gave me one." THE MOST BELOVED Tells What Is In His Head The lyrics of THE MOST BELOVED has always been rumored to be Poon Yuen Leung's portrait. Over 20 years ago when he directed KISS ME GOODBYE (LUEN OI GWAI JIK) he fell in a bitter romance with Lee Lai Chun. In the lyrics he mentioned, "Leaving her originally because of you, leaving love and leaving sin......" He only describes it as being very involved in the writing. He says, "How much is about me, I really can't tell. Ultimately I was very into it." As for Poon Yuen Leung's recent film SHADOWS OF LOVE during the shoot lead actress Cecilia Cheung Pak Chi ran into divorce troubles. Her recent films have performed worse and worse. In addition the release would be right in the peak of the UEFA European Football Championship, making people worry that his box office would be affected. Poon Yuen Leung says that he is at peace. "The box office from the beginning has always been the hardest to predict, but I want to say that I swear to God Pak Chi was really very professional. She only took two to three days off. As soon as she appeared she would achieve quality. I really want to say that. If it happened to me, I might not be able to handle it as well as Pak Chi did." Synopsis: Young Chairman Loves For A Double The new film SHADOWS OF LOVE is about flower seller Chun Sum, who never expects that she looks exactly the same as the Ko Group's missing heiress Paris. The Ko Group CEO Kwon uses her as a double to hold down the fort at the company in order to pretend its control to fall into the hands of another. Chun Sum moves into the Ko family mansion. Under Kwon's guidance Chun Sum plays Paris hard. Kwon originally thinks Chun Sum to be a gold digging woman and should be an absurd exchange. Neither expect that they would fall for each other in this gamble. Dong who has his eyes on Paris' inheritance takes the chance to act as he attempts to expose Chun Sum. In the guise of Paris Chun Sum faces many challenges. When she faces Kwon and wants to pursue her happiness hard, the real Paris appears...... 2. MING PAO DAILY, MAY 20 2012, FILM WORDS YIM HO'S HONG KONG: HALF CHINESE HALF FOREIGN FLOATING CITY TYCOON Famous Hong Kong director Yim Ho's new film FLOATING CITY (FAU SING), which can be called commemorative of the Hong Kong return to China 15th anniversary. It is also his first movie with Hong Kong as the subject since his 1997 year of the Hand Over release KITCHEN (NGOR OI CHU FONG). As for his previous film A WEST LAKE MOMENT (YUEN YEUNG WU DIP) was the 2005 Zhou Xun and Chen Kun starred Mainland modern romance. Actually Yim Ho's representative work of the recent 20 some years HOMECOMING (CHI SHUI LAU NIN), RED DUST (GWUN GWUN HUNG CHUN), THE DAY THE SUN TURNED COLD (TAI YEUNG YIK JI) and THE SUN HAS EARS (TAI YEUNG YAU YI) all mostly took place in Mainland China and little in Hong Kong. Even KITCHEN was based on a popular Japanese novel, not a purely Hong Kong story. Complicated Subject Lacks Completion Of course, Yim Ho ultimately has his eyes on Hong Kong. FLOATING CITY is an "epic" of the half century before the Hong Kong Hand Over. In addition it rarely uses one of the Hong Kong original resident: Tanka Boat Peopl, as the main plot and a Tanka family that adopted a Chinese foreign mixed heritage child as its leads. It represents the half Chinese half foreign floating uniqueness of Hong Kong's reliance of the sea for survival. This film has many stars. Aaron Kwok Fu Sing played the mixed heritage male lead. Since childhood he has been half "human" half "ghost", toiled, worked and studied hard. Finally he got rich and became a foreign business' manager until 1997 when the English owners left. Yet his ultimate sense of belonging was unclear, as he was full of conflict inside. Romantically he was also torn between upper class foreign style girlfriend (Lau Sum Yau) and legal Tanka wife (Yeung Choi Nei). FLOATING CITY touches on the 50 years of dramatic changes when Hong Kong turned from poor to rich, it had a historical retrospective meaning. The first half description of the poverty stricken Tanka life was particularly detailed, as the film made a rare capture of their language, traditions, salt water song to boat girls who went to foreign ships for kitchen chores and the hardship of orphans and widows. Now already few knew about them, but they are still worth reviewing. The story originally was full and touching, but the subject was excessively complicated for a movie to include. The release version was even cut down a lot. Many places lacked explanations, drastically reduced the dramatic flavor and turned the film into running account. For example Joey Leung Cho Hiu played the lead's laborer good friend who seemingly was swept into the 1967 left wing anti British riot. Yet he lacked details. This version seemingly avoided the important Chinese English political conflict. As for character personalities, Ben Yuen Fu Wa as the Tanka father had the most dimensions. The leads were better in childhood. In adulthood they became blurry. Among the female characters the modern wealthy woman Lau Sum Yau was the most outstanding, more fitting in comparison to Yeung Choi Nei and the lead's Mama Josie Ho Chiu Yi (youth) and Nina Paw Hee Ching (adult). Overall, FLOATING CITY is ambitious but incomplete, unless Yim Ho's past great work. No matter what, the British ruled Hong Kong's final 50 years were very successful. Although they were full of troubles, they left valuable laws and freedom that is still cherished in Hong Kong today. (Two and a half out of five stars) THE KICK is Absurd In addition, in the ONG BAK director Prachya Pinkaew's South Korean co-production THE KICK, the tae kwon do kid is rather agile. Unfortunately the story is absurd and the characters are dumb. (One and a half out of five stars) - SHEK KEI 3. TA KUNG PAO, MAY 20 2012, LIGHT SHADOW PATH ADVICE FOR FUTURE SCREEN WRITER A discussion about Hong Kong film problems with a film screen writing class feels somewhat like a review. A student asks, why a certain film company has always released better quality films but in recent years released poor quality films? The reason is more complex, mainly the film company must maintain a certain production rate. If its contract directors are in poor condition, the company releases naturally are affected. To maintain high quality in movies for a long run, it must strictly control quality. In the extreme case a certain director would release one movie every several years. This way, the film company cannot continue its operation. To screen writing students, the question that they are the most concerned with is how to get into the film industry. Production assistants and research collecting for directors or screen writers are the most common ways of getting into the business, television screen writer or stage writer is the springboard to jump into film. Students feel that becoming a production assistant or research assistant requires director or colleague recommendations, who should they ask? This is the nucleus of the question. Like any business, not only do you have to meet the basic requirements but you also have to be involved. Some students with screen writing qualifications have already "caught the eyes" of certain instructors and are asked to discuss scripts. If other students want to get an interview or internship opportunity, they would have to depend on whether their passion and "abilities" are in place. A student asks, can someone be an amateur screen writer without affecting their regular job? Currently it is rather difficult, because directors or screen writers having to wait until the amateur screen writers to get off work before discussing the script seem somewhat backward unless you are an expert in a certain field. In the past a late "detective" once was a long term police film screen writer, which was an exception. As for unpaid assistants to help with the script, this is probably possible. Every year students would ask whether they can send a story outline to the film company and whether their ideas would be stolen and their effort wasted. Actually film companies mostly do not look at scripts in their mail because almost every week several story outlines or scripts are emailed to them from different places around the world. If they have to look at every story, production supervisors would not have to do anything else. Thus film companies would only read film professional recommended or endorsed film scripts. The chance of being successfully made into a film is less than 1/3, indeed it is uneasy. Some students say that they often have new ideas but they lack the experience to continue them. Thus the stories become conventional and they often want to quit. How do they overcome that? The only answer is to think more, write more, watch more movies. It may sound cliche, but if the basics are done well you have no way to improve. When you properly do your part and not to think too much about anything else, often you are pleasantly surprised. - TIN LIK 4. SING TAO DAILY, MAY 16 2012 "WOULD YOU TELL PICASSO TO BE MORE COMMERCIAL NEXT TIME?" This is real live reaction of a friend who saw the NIGHTFALL (DAI JUI BO) promotion. Nick Cheung Ka Fai's iron pumping physique and the Ngong Ping 360 chase scene caused some interest. "Who is the director?" "(Roy) Chow Hin Yeung, MURDERER (SAT YUN FA)'s director." "Wow......" The friend's mouth was left gaping larger than Yuen Siu Cheung's. This "wow" hides lingering fear, lingering fear from the controversial MURDERER two years ago. The surprised ending with a never aging disease and a strange sounding child filled the internet with heavily criticism for two full months. Irresponsible comments threatened not only parents but also the life of the screen writer. Then on the day of the interview, Christine To Chi Long and Roy Chow Hin Yeung have let go of all the criticism. Yet when a certain reporter asks the question, "Any improvement this time?" The word improvement again triggers their nerves. Chow says, "Picasso and Van Gogh never drew anything that the market liked when they were alive, would you tell Picasso to be more commercial next time, meet the market deamnd and not to paint anything abstract!" "I wasn't wrong, what would I need to change?" Chow Hin Yeung says. "Halfway through the writing, Cheung Ka Fai appears." First the new film. NIGHTFALL was made last July. Nick Cheung Ka Fai iron pumping shape that everyone saw actually started at the end of 2010 when he took the script. Although today it seems to be the film's biggest gimmick, Director Chow feels that this was only a way for him to get into character. "Losing and gaining weight is a topic, but we don't create topic for the sake of a topic. I wanted him to be thin because I wanted the character to be mixed into his body, for him to perform from within and not chok it out. Everyone saw that he lost weight, but even more painful was the pressure that came after the weight loss. He had to deliberately isolate himself to cultivate his emotions and even gave himself sunburn to create the weathered feel of 20 years of prison labor. Everything were preparations that he focused on." According to screen writer To Chi Long, she never deliberately writes a script according to anyone. Yet halfway through, the best choice would naturally appear. "This script has 12 drafts, around the 3rd or the 4th draft, Cheung Ka Fai naturally appeared as the choice. Actually I had to thank him for giving so much to the film. In order to get into character, this year he has turned down many films. He wholeheartedly made a movie for the audience to enjoy." Director Chow even revealed that not only Cheung Ka Fai, but Janice Man Wing Shan also gave a lot. "She is a very typical girl, wild and crazy, but this time her character needs to her to play a rich girl. So over her 5 month training she first has to keep her shoulders and head still when she talks, then she has to learn to play the piano. I even prepared a pile of movie DVDs for her to watch at the production company so she can sense that type of aura." "When the world has too many misunderstanding and biases, you would rather not speak." In THE ARTIST the lead actor has no dialogue, completely relying on his facial expressions and movements to become the Oscar Best Actor. Cheung Ka Fai in the film has no dialogue, which is Director Chow's test for Ka Fai. "When the world has too many misunderstandings and biases, when everyone are certain that you are a murderer, you don't want to explain anymore or would rather not speak at all." This design brings a portrait of the director's personal experience. Instead of explaining more, he might as well make a good movie. Yet as the lead without any line, aside from looks and gestures what would the screen writer provide for assistance? "The story structure is very important. This scene wants you to misunderstand him so it is placed first. Then gradually you have to understand this character's original face." Whether the script is successful or not, the answer may not have to wait until it is made. Cheung Ka Fai's reaction already tips the hand. "The script that I showed him had no line. Other characters' dialogue and the background description made him understand. Since after reading he agreed to make the film, it proved that the words alone was already able to move him." "If Wong Kar Wai was afraid that people would slash seats, he would not have made HAPPY TOGETHER" Although while setting up the interview, the workers asks the interview to be around the new film. Yet later, the director knows what everyone was thinking and automatically brings the subject to MURDERER. "In the previous interview, the reporter asked, 'Any improvement this time?' I felt very shocking to hear that! Immediately my mind was blown for a moment. People have to pursue improvement, but we weren't wrong, what do we have to change?" Everyone know that he is talking about THE MURDERER's ending, the never aging disease set up caught viewers off guard. Perhaps the improvement refers to the story set up. "If you read history, would an artist's painting be right or wrong? Picasso and Van Gogh never drew anything that the market liked when they were alive. That they needed to change, right? They should draw something that the aristocrats would spend money on and not to paint anything abstract! If we over several hundred years treated art from this angle, would art still be around today? When did our society become so self-centered?" Director Chow brings up Picasso, Screenwriter To then uses Wong Kar Wai for support. "In this business, of course you have to do what you like. Without my way or the highway attitude you shouldn't be in this business. I have taught screenplay classes in school, once I saw a student's work started great. He clearly wanted to express a theme, but I always felt he was being too cautious. So I asked him face to face why he did not dare to keep writing? His answer was, 'I am afraid that others won't like it.' At the time I was very upset, why would you mind what others thought and limit your own creative freedom. You have the talent to create, which in itself is a type of freedom that is incomparably joyous. When Wong Kar Wai finished DAYS OF BEING WILD (AH FEI JING JUEN), some viewers after the late show slashed seats, would he have to change? If he changed, he wouldn't have made HAPPY TOGETHER (CHUN GUONG JA SIT)." Chow says, "Before the internet, no one care about others' comments. Now as soon as you turn on the iPhone, you look at what people are saying everyday. You naturally would be stunned." Two accept opinions. After the film was released, they had a comment that they remembered the most. The comment came from director Ang Lee. "Ang Lee once came to Hong Kong and watched the film, then he congratulated me. He said that the photography technique was great, but he asked whether was I able to withstand this film's reaction. 'You are making the devil inside, you even made a child to oppose everyone. Would you be able to withstand this story's reaction from the audience? I care the most about the health of your soul.' At that moment I was covered in tears, I was very touched. Luckily, this movie about the devil inside after its release really showed all the real devils! This effect could rival 4D and 5D!" As for NIGHTFALL's Cheung Ka Fai, Director Chow said that the character design was based on Auyeung Bing Keung. This case took place in 1974, a Happy Valley cardboard box corpse case. Originally he was sentenced to lifetime imprisonment. In 2002 he was released, but today no one knows whether he did it or not. - PATRICK [ In Production Now/Soon ] Can : Yut Lo Heung Sai Lit : A Road To The West AKA : DONGGUAN FOREST Lit : Dongguan Dik Shu Lum d. Free. All seating is first-come, first served. Doors open at 6:30pm. UPCOMING MOVIES Series III: "Epic Romance" Romance is in the air, but this time, it’s getting EPIC. Love that spans the ages has been a longtime favorite of Chinese and Japanese cinema, but it wasn’t until the last decade that epic, awe-inspiring romantic blockbusters made their way into Korean film –but when they hit, they hit with a vengeance! The floodgates opened and nobility clashed with peasants, royalty fell for servants, and everyone somehow stumbled across their soulmates amidst the wildest, most untamed eras of Korean history. So prepare yourself for a healthy dose of action, plenty of gut-busting comedy, and all the swoon-inducing, star-crossed lovers you can possibly take as we present New York City with a bouquet of Korea’s most epic romances! Tuesday, JUNE 19, 2012 @ 7pm THE SWORD WITH NO NAME (2009) Holy blockbusters! A big hit at the Korean box office, Sword is the epitome of posh, luscious, decadent period filmmaking. Based on the real life Empress Myeongseong, it tells her story through the eyes of a bounty hunter who becomes her bodyguard (Cho Seung-Woo, now doing his mandatory military service). She tries to stand up to Russian and Japanese intervention in 19th Century Korea and the results are a series of luxurious, CGI-enhanced action scenes alternating with carefully calibrated and eye-meltingly colorful scenes of court life, making this movie feel like an unholy mix of Merchant-Ivory and The Matrix. Tuesday, JUNE 5, 2012 @ 7pm FORBIDDEN QUEST (2006) A modest hit in Korea that deserves far more attention than it received, this sharp dramedy from The Servant director Kim Dae-Woo has the endearing Yun-Seo ( the legendary Han Suk-Kyu) randomly coming across an ‘indecent novel.’ Hesitant to read it at first, he’s soon inspired to write one of his own, even asking his family rival and infamous captain of guards, Gwang-Heon (Lee Beom-Su, City of Violence), to illustrate it for him. Their book is soon the most talked-about in town and it’s eventually picked up by Jeong-Bin, the king’s favorite concubine. But when she becomes a little too involved, the two men are soon drawn in a tricky web of palace intrigue that will leave no one safe. ---------------------- HK Top Ten Central hktopten@hotmail.com http://hktopten.orgfree.com | http://hktopten.blogspot.com
