The event showed the trailer. In the film Cho Ming had many action scenes, including a fight scene on top of a moving bus and flying kicks. Cho Ming even demonstrated live and personally performed the flying kick. Cho Ming was asked whether he would inform his parents about all the dangerous stunts. He said, "That's crazy! I wouldn't tell, I only report good news and not worry to my family, I would tell him it's computer special effects." * (2012/04/24) The Harwick Lau Hoi Wai, Mini Yang Mi and Chrissie Chau Sau Na starred romantic comedy HOLD JUI OI (HOLD ON TO LOVE) yesterday held a launch ceremony in Sanya, Hainan and symbolized the film official production start. Hoi Wai and Yang Mi did not accept any media interview but on stage they kept flirting, leaving Chau Sau Na complaining. Hoi Wai accepted a brief interview with the host on the stage. He said that two days ago he just arrived in Hainan but felt the scenery was very pretty. He was very happy. Yang Mi earlier has already begun work. Because they had to shoot in the hills and the marsh where a lot of bugs and lizards were, she often screamed during the shoot. Hoi Wai often received complaint calls from his girlfriend. How did working as a couple feel? He said that it was OK, at first they worried about not being able to hold back their laughter during their scenes. They did not during the real shoot. In addition they communicated even more and were able to add situation from their relationship into the film. Director Zhang Qi revealed that off screen they were even sweeter. In a hand holding scene he already yelled cut but they did not let go. They even began to play with their hands. Hoi Wai even lightly patted the back of his girlfriend's hand! Did the director mind working with a couple, he said that actually Yang Mi was confirmed to be the female lead a long time ago, later they wanted to a male star who Hong Kong and Taiwan were familiar with. He thought Hoi Wai matched her well and began to negotiate with him last August and signed a contract in November. "I like everyone else only found out that they were dating in January, but I feel like I won first prize." Did they steal Chau Sau Na's thunder? She said, "Yeah! But they really are very sweet!" Sister Na said that Hainan has a lot of fruit that were very sweet. She could only have more fruit to counter their sweetness. Sister Na also had to shoot in the hills. In one scene she had to spend all day in the water. At the time she was very afraid of bugs crawling on her. * (2012/04/24) Aaron Kwok Fu Sing, Tony Leung Ka Fai and Aarif Rahman (Lee Chi Ting) yesterday attended the police film COLD WAR (HONG JIN)'s title explanation event in Beijing. Lee Chi Ting thought COLD WAR was a particularly large mission, a very special war. Leung Ka Fai thought that COLD WAR as a story about the safety of Hong Kong, the Hong Kong police force faced an unprecedented challenge that would send chills down anyone's spine. Kwok Fu Sing stressed that the director's explanation to him was the closest. He said, "COLD WAR starts with a police vehicle hijack, the Hong Kong police force targeted this crisis by launching a special operation called COLD WAR. The film title should be the code name for this special mission." The event also showed the all star videos with production details. In them, several leads more than just praised the script. Kwok Fu Sing praised that the film's dramatic and action scenes were very exciting. His scene with Leung Ka Fai was enough for his acting bug. Leung Ka Fai also complimented this on screen "nemesis". "Kwok Fu Sing truly was very amazing, being able to act with him truly was very joyful." Aarif Rahman (Lee Chi TIng) was also very happy to have scenes with two Best Actors and so many outstanding actors, which benefited him a lot. Kwok Fu Sing even mentioned that many funny incidents took place during the shoot. He said, "I remember in one scene I was looking through binoculars, I didn't expect someone to fall from above outside the window. I looked, and actually it was a window cleaner. He even very passionately greeted me, I was scared out of my wits though." * (2012/04/23) The Motion Picture Industry Association yesterday announced that because of complaints from film companies about their films being uploaded to YouTube for free broadcast, YouTube urges its members to go to its site for evidence collection. Finally over three days 500 copyright violation videos were found on the site and almost 200 films were involved. They included hit films like A SIMPLE LIFE (TOH JEH) and FLYING SWORDS OF DRAGON GATE (LUNG MOON FEI GAP). The MPIA has already reported all the cases to the Hong Kong Customs and Excise Department. * (2012/04/23) The film A SIMPLE LIFE (TOH JEH) won countless major awards internationally. Producer Roger Lee Yan Lam earlier brought the film to his alma mater and shared his film production experience along with fellow alumni Daniel Wu (Ng Yin Cho). Roger said that he was the happiest to be able to see his past film teachers again and even received their praise of his work. Roger said that Ng Yin Cho brought his OVERHEARD 2 (SIT TING FUNG WON 2) to the forum. Roger said, "Because the university has many Mainland students, as soon as Ng Yin Cho appeared he became the focus right away. The entire venue roared with thunderous applause, it was very cheerful!" After the forum, Roger dined with Ng Yin Cho. He said that even though they did not attend the school at the same time, they were still very happy to talk about their school days! What was the happiest moment of this trip? Roger said, "I was the happiest to see my film teacher. He is 78 this year and retired, but he came to enjoy my work. We talked about back when I was in school. The teacher also praised me and said that A SIMPLE LIFE was well made, had a shade of Yasujiro Ozu. I also admitted that Yasujiro Ozu was my role model, as I used to watch his films all the time. The style might be a little similar but I wasn't as amazing as he was." * (2012/04/23) Huayi Brothers two days ago held a press conference in Beijing to announce its new films in the upcoming year. Popular director Pang Ho Cheung after LOVE IN THE BUFF (CHUN GIU YU JI MING) will make EVERYONE LOVES TENDER WOMAN, Doze Niu Chen-Zer will direct STORY OF A DISCHARGED PRISONER (YING HUNG BOON SIK), and Tsui Hark will make the DETECTIVE DEE prequel. Feng Xiaogang revealed that he was planning to retire. "Now I make one movie after another. I no longer have a life of a normal person, which is wrong. I shouldn't let film become my entire life." He planned to properly enjoy the rest of his life after completing his contract with Huayi. * (2012/04/23) Mini Yang Mi, Harwick Lau Hoi Wai and Chrissie Chau Sau Na are working on their new film HOLD JUI OI (HOLD ON TO LOVE) in Hainan. Earlier Lau Hoi Wai and girlfriend Yang Mi were rumored to have broken up. For their first film together, their first scene was a break up. Yet off camera they were very close. Lau Hoi Wai revealed that later he and Chau Sau Na will shoot a bed scene. Yang Mi said that she will not observe but Lau Hoi Wai wanted her to visit the set. Will he propose to her? He declined to answer and said that his schedule was too tight. He stressed that he was not "playing around" in the relationship. * (2012/04/23) Nancy Sit Ka Yin and Eric Tsang Chi Wai yesterday attended a Yuen Long restaurant opening. Derek Yee Tung Sing earlier criticized this year's Hong Kong Film Award for being more sentimental than professional. Chi Wai said that on May 5th a Hong Kong Film Award review meeting will take place and said that this year's focus might have been on a few artists, but he thought the Hong Kong Film Award election process was very sound. Chi Wai admitted that sentimental score was inevitable, ultimately the event was to support Hong Kong film. He said, "Speaking of sentimentality, A SIMPLE LIFE (TOH JEH) earlier also won many awards. Winning again this time was very normal. If the results were too even they would resemble everyone getting a piece." Did he disagree with what Anthony Wong Chau Sun said about one vote per person? Chi Wai said that the Hong Kong Film award actually has been an one vote per person election with each affiliated organization. Unless it was like overseas film awards with different international filmmakers on the jury to avoid regional sentimental score. However, he too wanted Carina Lau Ka Ling and Lau Ching Wan to win because they are Hong Kong actors as well. Chi Wai said, "I also respect Jiang Wen very much, he stayed from the beginning to the end. LET THE BULLETS FLY had many nominations. Finally (William) Chang Suk Ping won. Earlier (Peter) Chan Ho Sun received 11 nominations but went home empty handed." * (2012/04/23) Stephen Fung Tak Lun yesterday along with Feng Xiaogang, Tsui Hark, Doze Niu Chen-Zer, Pang Ho Cheung and other directors attended the Huayi Brothers 2012-2013 press conference in Beijing to announce the "Project H" new film production plan. Currently working on the TAI CHI Trilogy, Fung Tak Lun announced that the first film TAI CHI 0 will be released in the Mainland at the end of September. Reporters asked him about what he gave Shu Qi for her birthday, Director Feng shook his head and said, "Don't ask, I won't answer." When asked about his new film's actress Angelababy, he immediately had nothing but praise. "I used to feel Baby was fragile and weak. After one dinner, I asked her to stop being gentle, get tough and make a movie with me. She agreed right away and even personally performed the explosion scenes. Her action scenes were completed beyond my expectation. I feel she has a lot of potential, smart and luck with the audience. In addition no man wouldn't want her to be his girlfriend. She will be in the first two films but maybe not the third one." He also revealed that earlier he purchased the Patrick Lung Kong directed STORY OF A DISCHARGED PRISONER (YING HUNG BOON SIK), which now he decided to let Taiwan director Niu Chen-Zer direct while he will produce. He even hoped that Director Doze will use Baby. Reportedly Huayi would like Lau Ching Wan, Ethan Juan (Yuen King Tin), Feng Shaofeng and Mark Chao (Chiu Yau Ting) to star. Ching Wan and Siu Tin would split Wong Wai's character. Just released from prison Ching Wan was forced to return to the criminal world, even involving his brother Siu Tin, Siu Tin's mob brother Chiu Yau Ting and Feng Shaofeng would rescue him. The female lead might be Angelababy and Mini Yang Mi. Aside from TAI, Feng Xiaogang's 1942 has already been completed but no release date has been mentioned at the press conference. Speaking of piracy, he angrily exploded with foul language, "Piracy has already gang raped us countless times, now it's still fx me! Let them Fx! Since we are all chickens! However we will make a bloody trail." In addition, Huayi and Emperor will promote at Cannes with a 4 minute teaser of their film CHINESE ZODIAC. Tsui Hark in June will start work on the DETECTIVE DEE prequel. He said, "(The film) should be younger and would not use the original team." * (2012/04/23) Kay Tse On Kay, Fama, Joyce Cheng Yun Yi and Rubberband yesterday attended a voter registration concert. Kay and Universal's contract termination issue has not been resolved yet. She joked that even if she registered to vote she might not be able to help herself, but lately her manager has been working hard on it and she was in no hurry. Since music was on hold Kay focused on movies instead. Next month she will work on a costume action film. Because her character excels in martial arts and handheld weapons, she has been learning poses and stance. Also due to her agility in the film, Kay has been working hard on losing weight to be convincing with her performance. She hoped to lose ten pounds. Kay would study martial art with her husband's elder and her husband knew Wing Chun as well. Kay said, "I know all he knows, and this time I have to wield weapons." * (2012/04/23) Nicholas Tse Ting Fung, Joey Yung Cho Yi and others yesterday led Emperor singers and artists to attend the Emperor Group 70th Anniversary. Boss Albert Yeung Sau Sing, boss lady Lu Xiaoman and executives, singers appeared in convertibles. Yeung Sau Sing and his wife even walked the red carpet hand in hand. Almost 100 employees lined up in the shape of 70. Yeung Sau Sing announced the company will donate HK$10 million to four different charity organizations. Ting Fung wore sunglasses and constantly waved in good spirit. During his interview he denied that his company will go public. "I haven't thought that far ahead, I am still thinking about it. However, the rumor refers to the Growth Enterprise Market but if I plan it should be on the big board. First I have to finish the work on hand. At the end of May it will open in Beijing." Ting Fung has two sons, would he deliberately cultivate them to be successors at the company? Ting Fung said, "I haven't thought about it, this suggestion is pretty good but the younger son is better. He isn't as mischievous as his brother. He is more stable. (Why not find a girlfriend to cultivate your sons?) That's crazy, I never have such a plan." Ting Fung clarified again that he never saw Mini Yang Mi outside work. Because he was dull, even when he worked in the Mainland he would not have too many women around him. Now work came first, his love life would have to wait. Chapman To Man Jat revealed that he just renewed his contract with Emperor and said that the collaboration has been pleasant. He said, "I didn't know how to handle money before and I spent unwisely. After years with the company, just last year alone I already made eight movies. Both sides are very pleased and the contract renewal was very reasonable. (Raise?) My salary always goes directly from the company to my wife, the old lady every month gives me HK$15,000 for living expenses. How much am I worth I really have no idea. The old lady said that it should be in eight figures." * (2012/04/22) The fresh out of the oven Best Supporting Actor Lo Hoi Pang yesterday appeared on Nancy Sit Ka Yin's Metro Radio program. He said that the award was at home. Recently he has been busy with Johnnie To Kei Fung's new film but he has been celebrating ever since. He said that he was working in Zhuhai that day, if he could not return to Hong Kong in time he would have given up on attending the Hong Kong Film Award. Luckily he made it in the end. When asked whether he was focused on making RMB, he said, "We still get paid in Hong Kong dollar." Has TVB asked him to return after the award? Brother Pang said, "They have approached me, but it would depend on the situation. (Was the offer not high enough?) No! I don't work on television because it's too tough. Having a little fun on a variety program is no problem. If they give me enough money I would make it." He stressed that the most important would be freedom, without any long term contract or being tied down. * (2012/04/21) After director Derek Yee Tung Sing earlier accusing the Hong Kong Film Award for not being professional enough, the Hong Kong Film Award chair Gordon Chan Ka Seung said that everyone has a right to speak. Director Wong Jing yesterday wrote on his microblog, "Chan Ka Seung, you say at the Hong Kong Film Award everyone has the right to express opinions, but ten years ago when I spoke up, why were people who express their opinions today able to lead the public and raise a Cultural Revolution style attack against me? Can you give me an explanation?" Wong Jing stressed that he was only complaining. "I was just talking about what happened over a decade ago." However, Wong Jing last night posted again that in recent years the Hong Kong Film Award winning films were often previewed in the Mainland at the end of the year then went wide release in March before the Hong Kong Film Award, which would affect voter desire. He wrote, "Films that were previewed should be prohibited from being re-released before the vote, otherwise there is no public trust to speak of." Chan Ka Seung stressed on his microblog that the Hong Kong Film Award gave one vote per person with no room for fraud. * (2012/04/21) Cecilia Cheung Pak Chi recently posed for a Cosmo magazine cover. She revealed that last year she made many movies like THE LION ROARS 2, DANGEROUS LIAISON and SHADOW OF LOVE at once, she did not have time to take care of her sons Lucas and Quintus. "Now the children are the center of my center, so this year I will spend a lot of time on taking care of the children. It's time for me to drop the endless work. If everyday I have to have trouble and stress to be able to have success, this is not success; since having a happy life and a job that I like is real success." * (2012/04/21) Last night fresh out of the oven Best Actor Andy Lau Tak Wa and Best Director Ann Hui On Wa attended an event. Wa Jai has known the boss of the company for years. Every time he performed a concert he would have a lot of very Chinese ideas from the owner. Thus Wa Jai yesterday attended in support. Has he celebrated since he won Best Actor? Wa Jai only said "No!" and went to the event. Hui On Wa said that today she will head to Beijing for a film festival. As for Derek Yee Tung Sing's comment that this year's Hong Kong Film Award was too sentimental and lacked professionalism, Ann said that sometimes it has been. She felt that what Yee Tung Sing referred to was very widespread and not just in one category. She said, "Everyone help Hong Kong film and would add some sentimental points. I too am a beneficiary." She agreed with Yee Tung Sing that a review was needed. After examining it the event would improve, only then would the Hong Kong Film Award be better and better. Has she discussed this with the actors? "It just happened a few days ago, I haven't seen other actors. (Would you meet with them to discuss it?) I wouldn't discuss it, I would only share my opinions. (Who was your pick of Best Actor?) I of course picked Lau Tak Wa, of course (Lau) Ching Wan did very well too. (Do you plan to work with Wa Jai again?) Not yet." * (2012/04/21) Mr., Mag Lam Yun Tung and Alex Lam Tak Shun yesterday promoted their new film LIVES IN FLAMES (HEI SAI YIU GWUN) in Mongkok. Mag said that she was somewhat unhappy due to work. "Today I am much better. I don't plan to tell the public about this. I would find the person responsible and resolve this." Mag refused to reveal any detail, just that she was working on a fast food restaurant chain commercial. She felt that their positions and attitude could be different. She said, "I don't want everyone's work attitude to just be completion within the time limit like handing in homework, my principle is doing everything perfectly." Mr. said that for their first film they were very nervous. Alan said that when he watched his kiss scene he felt very embarrassed. Drummer Tom said that when he watched Alan's kiss scene he could not help but pucker up; however, he joked that now he could only kiss his son. * (2012/04/20) Nicholas Tse Ting Fung yesterday attended an Asian Leadership Series forum at the University of Science and Technology. The form began at 7PM, many reporters waited around before then but did not see Ting Fung. Later Ting Fung's assistant Cousin appeared and said that Ting Fung was already inside. Because this forum was only for students, the media were unable to attend; all students must register first and show their student identification for admission. When the forum began, students inside could be heard of screaming "How handsome". The forum lasted an hour and 15 minutes. Ting Fung left through the back. Cousin asked the media to back up a little so reporters could do their jobs for a minute. Ting Fung had his hands in his pockets and posed like his father Patrick Tse Yin for reporters to take pictures. Recently Ting Fung was linked to Mainland star Mini Yang Mi in rumors. Reportedly Yang Mi went to Ting Fung's hotel and knocked on his door. Ting Fung was asked whether Yang Mi really knocked on his door? Cousin immediately interrupted and said, "Let's talk about today's topic." Reporters asked whether anyone knocked on his door. Ting Fung finally spoke up. "Aside from work, I haven't seen her anywhere else. This is just a rumor." Was he interested in Yang Mi? He smiled and left in his vehicle. * (2012/04/20) Shawn Yue Man Lok and Aimee Chan Yan Mei yesterday attended a television announcement event. Ah Lok said that he has always wanted to be a 3D television. Did he want to watch 3D SEX AND ZEN (3D YUK PO TUEN)? He said that he could watch many 3D films, mainly his mother has never seen a 3D film because she rarely went out. Yue Man Lok and Mini Yang Mi worked together on LOVE IN THE BUFF (CHUN GIU YU JI MING). Recently Yang Mi reportedly while working with Nicholas Tse Ting Fung on THE BULLET VANISHES (SIU SUT DIK JI DAN) she knocked on his door. Ah Lok immediately joked, "I am really bad at this. Ting Fung can actually cross sets and cause trouble." He said that when he first made LOVE, director Pang Ho Cheung already joked that he made him a chance but in the end he could not do anything. Did anyone knock on his door? He said yes, but it was a man. Reporters pointed out that he and Yang Mi had a kiss scene in the film but they did not "click". Ah Lok said, "I am really bad, I have to examine that." Ah Lok said that he might be more attractive to older women. His previous girlfriends were all older than him. The oldest one was seven years his senior. He admitted that he could accept a relationship with an old woman, but less than ten years of age difference would be the best. He was afraid that his family might not be able to accept it. He said, "I am not destined to have anyone young in my lifetime." Did he believe that Ting Fung and Yang Mi "clicked"? He said that with so many such news items in a year he thought knocking on doors might be taking too much initiative. * (2012/04/20) LOVE IN THE BUFF (CHUN GIU YU JI MING) director Pang Ho Cheung once promised when the film reached HK$20 million at the box office he would perform in the DON'T ASK WHO I AM music video. Now the film's box office has already exceeded 26 million, Pang Ho Cheung earlier made the music video. Two nights ago a special premiere was held. Shawn Yue Man Lok, Linda Wong Hing Ping, June Lam (Brenda), Susan Shaw Yam Yam and others attended. During the film end credit first came Ah Lok's music video parody, then the director's edition was shown. The audience kept screaming at how fabulous it was. Ah Lok jokingly reminded the audience that they had air sickness bags at their seats. Pang Ho Cheung said that his family knew that he would make this music video and thought that he bumped his head when he was little. First time watching the director's version, Wong Hing Ping joked that people who watched Ah Lok were fine but after watching the director's they were speechless. She only thought it was very "stiff". Pang Ho Cheung also said that he had to treat Ah Lok to dinner to apology because Ah Lok's music video took over 120 takes. Lok Jai did not get mad until after the 90th one, but he was already angry at the 4th one. As for which version was funnier, Ah Lok said that the director's definitely. The director was asked what would happen if the box office broke through 30 million. He joked that Ah Lok would streak. If he was truly willing to streak, he would follow. Wong Hing Ping said that after watching the director's music video she was crying from laughing so hard. Did she feel she was being lampooned? She said that she did not. Instead they worked very hard to look as pretty as they could with make up, but they have already done their best. She urged viewers against eating or drinking before watching it. She also praised the director for his skin's complete lack of pores and how smooth it was. * (2012/04/19) TVB reality show BRIDE WANNABE has been talked about since its airing, but its negative reaction have also been endless. TVB earlier stated that it would not make a celebrity edition, but yesterday Cha Siu Yan on her radio program revealed that Shaw was interested in turning the show into a special topic film. * (2012/04/19) Derek Yee Tung Sing criticized the Hong Kong Film Award for losing professionalism in preference for sentimentality on his microblog and immediately led widespread online discussions. Some even thought that Yee Tung Sing's comment was just venting for his brother Paul Chun Pui's Best Supporting Actor defeat. Yee Tung Sing immediately wrote on his microblog that he too voted for Lo Hoi Pang and was not venting for his brother. Yee Tung Sing yesterday explained his "sentimentality over professionalism" comment, citing that the Hong Kong Film Award voters' thinking of "Because of Hong Kong film is at a disadvantage, vote for Hong Kong film" is wrong. Because professionals need to be level headed, they need to understand everyone would vote for elders or encouraging alternative subjects. Yet they should have a line to maintain fairness. He also praised that Jiang Wen's LET THE BULLETS FLY had a screenplay! Yee Tung Sing even said that next month the Hong Kong Directors' Guild will hold a meeting to discuss the Hong Kong Film Award. He will reflect to chair Gordon Chan Ka Seung. Yee Tung Sing's comment was aimed at this year's Best Director winner Ann Hui On Wa, Best Actress Deanie Ip Tak Han, Best Supporting Actress So Hung Shuen. So Hung Shuen respected Yee Tung Sing's comment because everything had the freedom of speech. Yee Tung Sing also said that he and Hui On Wa were good friends, he only wanted to make a suggestion to the Hong Kong Film Award. * (2012/04/19) A SIMPLE LIFE (TOH JEH) swept up multiple major awards overseas. The real person the story was based on, Roger Lee Yan Lam, has already headed for his alma mater in the U.S. for its premiere and forum. His mother also supported the film. After watching A SIMPLE LIFE for the first time Mother Lee even said that it was very touching! The film A SIMPLE LIFE won several major awards overseas and even won five Hong Kong Film Awards this year. Earlier real life Roger Lee Yan Lam reportedly would return to his alma mater the University of Oregon for a film forum. Earlier after the Hong Kong Film Award, he headed to the U.S. first to attend A SIMPLE LIFE premiere in San Francisco. His mother attended in support. After watching A SIMPLE LIFE for the first time Mother Lee even said that it was very touching. Roger yesterday said that after the Hong Kong Film Award he already flew to the U.S., first to San Francisco to attend A SIMPLE LIFE premiere. He said that this time the film premiered in San Francisco because the bank that his nephew worked at sponsored A SIMPLE LIFE. The bank through his nephew invited him to attend the premiere. Roger's mother, sister and brother in law attended. It was Mother Lee's first viewing of A SIMPLE LIFE, after which she immediately recalled a lot of memories and thought it was very thoughtful and very touching. She even applauded Roger with encouragement. Roger said that Mother and Sister Peach were the same age. This year she is already 80, but she does everything herself. She looked so well kept that some mistook Mother Lee for Roger's wife, which made Roger very proud of his mother. As for the rumored A SIMPLE LIFE prequel, Roger said that he had no such plan for now because the production would be very large. He said, "Not including costumes and props, because the story would go from the 50s to the 90s, casting characters of different eras would already be a very big deal. With many different changes in the social environment, the production would have certain difficulties." * (2012/04/19) Based on a Japanese youth romance novel, the Taiwan film SNOWFALL IN TAIPEI starred Chen Bo-Lin, Tony Yang and "Little Zhang Ziyi" Tong Yao. The story is about the Tong Yao played music newcomer May who suddenly vanishes. She runs into the Chen Bo-Lin played Siu Mok and develops an innocent romance. Tony Yang played a long haired music producer, turning in his sunshine guy image for a carefree masculine flavor. * (2012/04/19) LOVE IN THE BUFF (CHUN GIU YU JI MING) after 20 days in release made over HK$25 million. Director Pang Ho Cheung as promised shot DON'T ASK WHO I AM music video and guaranteed that it would only be shown in Hong Kong cinemas to show his appreciation to viewers. Earlier the director shot in a Chai Wan studio. The director that day put on makeup while studying both Linda Wong Hing Ping's original version and Shawn Yue Man Lok's parody version to come up with how to make his version even funnier. When the director started to change, the set was already filled with endless laughter. In particular with his extremely outstanding figure and the trademark sunglasses, his flirtatious expressions had everyone rolling on the floor. Halfway through the shoot the director and the photographer plotted to grab the crew and forced them in front of the camera, making everyone on the set shattered. DON'T ASK WHO I AM singer Wong Hing Ping yesterday also visited the set. As soon as she arrived and saw the director in costume she could not stop laughing. "I can't tell it's you at all!" Linda even praised the director as pretty from the side and even personally fixed the director's hair. The director asked Linda about the authentic "butterfly hands". Linda said that she thought no one could surpass Yue Man Lok, she did not expect the director to have such great skin. Although the director wore glasses, his eyes actually were very large. The director felt satisfied with his own female disguise and said that this time was his first performance without glasses. He even said that several guys asked him for his number. Linda joked, "If you don't stop I am really going to hit you!" The director said that the new music video will be shown during the LOVE IN THE BUFF end credit starting the 19th and will not appear online. Pirates will have no way to pirate it. Only Hong Kong viewers will be able to enjoy it at the movies. The director said that when everyone finished with Yue Man Lok's video they would see his appearance. Linda helplessly said, "Wouldn't it be too much? I urge everyone to take a seat first. I am a little worried that maybe in 20 years people would feel yours would be the official versions of DON'T ASK WHO I AM.....then what?" As for who was better, the director joked that he was more feminine and more erotic while Lok Jai's face was more masculine. [ BLAH OF THE WEEK ] Columns, Reviews, Interviews 1. MING PAO DAILY, APRIL 22 2012, FILM WORDS TAIWAN'S DOUBLE TEN SPLENDOR 10+10 is Comparable to PARIS, JE T'AIME With special screenings at the Broadway Circuit recently, 10+10 consists of 5 minute films from 20 new and veteran Taiwan directors. In 100 minutes the film has 20 stories and shows that the film can made very short with a lot of detail. Of course, often multiple part anthology films are mixed. This one also has superb and rough segments, fortunately it truly is rich and colorful. Several parts are outstanding and the film is comparable to PARIS, JE'TAIME. Among them veteran Wang Toon's THE RITUAL is very wonderful. It makes the pilgrimage to show the gods appreciation interesting. It is the opposite of his tragic classic HILL OF NO RETURN. The most exciting is Chen Yu-Hsun's strange tale HIPPOCAMP HAIR SALON, which turns an antiquated hair salon into science fiction pleasant surprise. Fortunately it truly "plays with the mind" without any need for rare and expensive special effect. Newcomer Hou Chi-Jan's GREEN ISLAND SERENADE also has unique color with nostalgic song and is better than old school Hou Hsiao-Hsien's segment. Chen Kuo-Fu's THE DEBUT also achieves an eerie nostalgia with Teresa Tang's music scene debut. Sylvia Chang's THE DUSK OF THE GODS is excessively superficial with a death row inmate, but obviously "micro films" can be developed into anything and everything. 10+10 has many other unique segments. Chang Tso-Chi's SPARKLES is a Chinese civil war film that rains bullets and bombs. Cheng Yu-Chieh's THE UNWRITTEN RULE plays with the Republic of China national flag with new era satire of both sides of the strait. Actually whether excellent or flaws, almost every segment has something entertaining or topical, proving that now Taiwan film has a lot of talent with rather strong creativity. (Three and a half out of five stars) LIVES IN FLAMES Is Not Badly Made As for new Hong Kong film, the Lee Chi Lun directed LIVES IN FLAMES (HEI SAI YIU GWUN) stars local youth rock group Mr.'s Po Chi Lun, Lai Jat Yan, Tam Kin Man, Tam Kit Ming, and To Chi Hung. It may not be a surprise hit at the box office but it is not poorly made. In the film several dejected graduates form a band and each face troubles in career, friendship, romance and family relationships. After joy, sorrow, union and parting they finally make a name for themselves. The story is more loose, fortunately it describes some dejected youth ecology and mentality with realism. Actresses Mag Lam Yun Tung, Michelle Wai (Si Nga), Bonnie Xian (Sin Sik Lai) and others were particularly likable. The film also has a lot of support from the music scene like Alan Tam Wing Lun, Yip Chun Tong, Calvin Poon Yuen Leung, Lam Man Chung, Candy Lo Hau Yam, William Chan Wai Ting and others. Chan Wai Man as the Chinese herbal medicine store owner and old dad is especially great. (Two and a half out of five stars) - SHEK KEI 2. TA KUNG PAO, APRIL 22 2012, LIGHT SHADOW PATH BOTH SIDES OF THE HONG KONG FILM AWARD RESULTS The 31st Hong Kong Film Award after coming to an end last week led to some discussions about how rational the results were. Veteran director Derek Yee Tung Sing wrote on his microblog, "If this award just has sentimentality but loses professionalism, what would it turn into? The Board of Directors members must consider that in depth!" His description was also very sentimental because he did not mention which part of the Hong Kong Film Award deviated from professionalism. The speculation was that Director Yee thought the results was somewhat one sided for Hong Kong film productions and seemed to have overlook quality Mainland directors' work. Viewers in general would pay the most attention to the five major awards, this year they including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Actor and Best Actress all went to A SIMPLE LIFE (TOH JEH). A SIMPLE LIFE indeed dominated. First with Best Director and Best Screenplay, this year's Film Directors Guild annual dinner recommended directors (awards) went to A SIMPLE LIFE's Ann Hui On Wa, LET THE BULLETS FLY's Jiang Wen and FLYING SWORDS OF DRAGON GATE (LUNG MOON FEI GAP)'s Tsui Hark. At the Screenwriters Guild spring banquet, A SIMPLE LIFE's Susan Chan Suk Yin won the most recommended screenplay. Since the affiliated organizations account for 25% of the vote, A SIMPLE LIFE's Director and Screenplay awards are very reasonable. Some said that Andy Lau Tak Wa had luck with people so he won the Best Actor award. This claim makes sense, but the writer feels the reason that A SIMPLE LIFE is able to sweep five major awards is because this film has already won awards in different regions. Its momentum is unrivaled. In addition as Wa Jai said, voters may appreciate his contribution to film. Some would say that Best Actor should be selected based on acting and nothing else, but the film's overall performance and the impression that the nominee has given to voters indeed are important factors. After all that, I do not want to argue the outside questions about this year's Hong Kong Film Award results. As director Gordon Chan Ka Seung said, "Every year the results represent Hong Kong filmmakers' mentality." The writer's personal choices actually are different from the results as well, only the system has certain specifications that indeed cannot satisfy everyone's preference. If the Hong Kong Film Award's selection method resembles the Golden Horse Award or the Hong Kong Film Critic Society's and winners result from discussions, any question about the results can be responded officially by listing the reasons that they won. The Hong Kong Film Award is based on the Oscars' voting method, so the "official" response is just "voter's choice". Earlier the 18th Film Critic Society Award gave five major awards to three movies: Best Picture was A SIMPLE LIFE, Best Director was LET THE BULLETS FLY's Jiang Wen, Best Screenplay was LIFE WITHOUT PRINCIPLE (DUET MING GUM), Best Actress was A SIMPLE LIFE's Deanie Ip Tak Han and Best Actor was LIFE WITHOUT PRINCIPLE's Lau Ching Wan. Do you feel this list is more professional than the Hong Kong film Award's winner list? Or is it more sentimental? - TIN LIK 3. APPLE DAILY, APRIL 21 2012, ELECTRIC FILM ROAD 10+10 MAKES A NAME FOR TAIWAN FILM Hong Kong filmmaker unity enables A SIMPLE LIFE (TOH JEH) to win four major awards at the Hong Kong Film Award. Rising awakening in recent years Taiwan film industry has been just as united. With 20 directors including famous ones like Hou Hsiao-Hsien, Wei Te-Sheng and Sylvia Chang (Cheung Ngai Ga), with the veterans leading the new they each make five minute long short films. With Taiwan domestic uniqueness as the subject, they create 20 stories for the film 10+10. Although they are short films the cast has many top Taiwan artists like Shu Qi, Kwai Lun-Mei, Jack Kao. Some of the productions cost no less than a small budget film. With plenty of creativity, it absolutely is a film that makes a name for Taiwan films. - HO WING NING, MAN KWOK CHUN Hou Hsiao-Hsien LA BELLE EPOQUE Thoroughly the director's usual production method, with long range shots he simply narrates the light relationship between Grandma and Granddaughter. In the film Shu Qi would return home to visit Grandma every time she had time off and every time she would receive a piece of gold jewelry for her dowery. Shu Qi is reminded when she was little how Grandma wore the same gold jewelry to the market. Leon Dai KEY The director asks his own girlfriend Kwai Lun-Mei to perform. In the busy city, the relationship between people is as separate as water off a duck's back. With a young woman forgetting her keys, everything that happens in the elevator lobby is enough to prove this point. Hou Chi-Jan GREEN ISLAND SERENADE The 1954 new park broadcast kiosk played GREEN ISLAND SERENADE as the crowd quietly listened. The time flew to the 2011 recording studio as the 75 year old singer continued to sing. Shen Ko-Shang BOS ODYSSEY A bus driver everyday obey traffic laws, always reminding passengers to have courtesy for the elderly, weak and women. One day, a man tries to force his way onto the vehicle, how would the driver who always follows the rules react? Chung Mong-Hung REVERBERATION Another director Leon Dai not only participate in this film but also star. The film is full of Taiwan Monga style, as a bully keeps on picking on a chubby kid and not expecting the character behind the chubby kid turning out to be a big shot. Sylvia Chang THE DUSK OF THE GODS The film is adapted from writer Jeremy Lu's essay about a social worker who writes a letter to the victim's parents after being with a death row inmate. In the short five minute film, the director deliberately make the color dark and down and without any music score. Instead she uses confession scriptures for background music, the feeling of which is very heavy. Chen Yu-Hsun HIPPOCAMP HAIR SALON The director is known for comedy. His short piece is just as full of sense of humor and pleasant surprise. Young girl Lee Lieh in order to forget former boyfriend Laurence Ko went to the Hippocamp Hair Salon in preparation to wash away her memory. She asks hair washing master Ko I-Chen to take care of the hippocampus that is responsible for memory in her brain. Just in case Lee Lieh even brings another kind of secret weapon. Wang Toon THE RITUAL Wang Toon just like his name is full of childlike innocence. The film is about two brothers who won the lottery go to show the gods their appreciation. Over a long distance they bring with them a generation, a projector and a screen to play the film AVATAR in front of the small temple. They even put 3D glasses on the gods. The heavy local flavor in the film brings out the Taiwan traditional culture of worship. Cheng Yu-Chieh UNWRITTEN RULES The film's selling point is a film within a film. In a satirical method it reflects the Mainland's far and wide power to display the co-production erosion into Taiwan film. The location that the producer from academia finds actually has a Republic of China flag in the background, stunning the co-production film director. How can the film pass Mainland inspection? Chen Kuo-Fu THE DEBUT In the year 57 of the Republic of China, a 15 year old singer sits alone, wiping away tears in front of a mirror. Because a mishap in rehearsal she has lost her chance to appear on camera. Yet a dream like encounter changes the young woman's life, as the end of the film shows Teresa Tang's footage. Wu Nieh-Jen A GROCERY CALLED FOREVER In the country a grocery store called Forever lacks business, an old man and his son wager on whether to close the store. Kevin Chu Yen-Ping THE ORPHANS Hong Kong has double non, Taiwan also has the problem of orphans during the civil war. A Myanmar soldier descendent young woman with mental defect and a blind uncle due to the lack of identification face tragic lives. Wei Te-Sheng (DEBUT) Playing Mona Rudo in the film WARRIORS OF THE RAINBOW: SEEDIQ BALE, Lin Ching-Tai is a preacher who is born and raised in a small village. The director shoots his narrative with God before accepting the film. Chang Tso-Chi SPARKLES Thie civil war is many Taiwan directors' collective memory and subject. A young girl who was born during the Second Taiwan Strait Crisis lives there. Today in peace she waits on boat after boat of Mainland tourists. Hsiao Ya-Chuan SOEMTHING'S GOTTA GIVE In an evening gown a young woman rushes into a closing lingerie store because her bra strap has snapped. The clerk only has two choices: asking her to leave or helping her with her problem. Ho Wi-Ding 100 The film documents the daily life of an 100 year old senior who follows the same hillside road everyday to pick up mail in the faraway mailbox. Wang Shaudi DESTINED ERUPTION A woman who goes out alone at night in the Taitung countryside is surprised to wake up with an uninvited guest in her room. A comparison between silent and sound films displays the difference between the city and the country. Yang Ya-Che THE SINGING BOY A boy who is thought to be mischievous is always singing, even with physical punishments from the teacher he does not waver. A female student who is in the top of her class also likes to sing but suffers a variety of limitations from those around her. Arvin Chen LANE 256 A couple who is about to wed prepares to move into a new home. Because the stairway is too narrow the washing machine cannot be moved and requires a forklift. The shaking forklift in the city reminds people of Tong Tong's Kowloon Tong mansion. Cheng Wen-Tang OLD MAN & ME An old man who has lost his way alone on a country road expresses that he has forgotten his way home but brings back a lot of memory. While he says thank you to the camera, the old man continues to search on the road. [ In Production Now/Soon ] CHRISTMAS ROSE Can : Sing Dan Mui Gwai d. When a reward is placed for the capture of fugitive Lee Kin-fai, who's said to be hiding on an island off Hong Kong, Cho heads to the quiet locale and takes a room at a small hotel, the Lazy Inn, run by housekeeper and astrology columnist Linda and an intensely meddlesome manager. Obstructing Cho's attempts at finding his target is the general weirdness of the locals. The lodge's manager and Linda appear to be father and daughter, though the man's denials cloud the situation; word gets out that Lee, wherever he is, has fallen for Linda; and the small-time hoodlums of the local Biting Sugar Cane Gang are making things difficult with their triad-style theatrics. Love that spans the ages has been a longtime favorite of Chinese and Japanese cinema, but it wasn’t until the last decade that epic, awe-inspiring romantic blockbusters made their way into Korean film –but when they hit, they hit with a vengeance! The floodgates opened and nobility clashed with peasants, royalty fell for servants, and everyone somehow stumbled across their soulmates amidst the wildest, most untamed eras of Korean history. So prepare yourself for a healthy dose of action, plenty of gut-busting comedy, and all the swoon-inducing, star-crossed lovers you can possibly take as we present New York City with a bouquet of Korea’s most epic romances! Tuesday, MAY 1, 2012 @ 7pm THE SERVANT (2010, 124 minutes) Opening at number one at the Korean box office, this retelling of Chunhyang-jeon (Korea’s version of Romeo & Juliet which has been remade hundreds of times) is told from the point-of-view of Bang-Ja (Kim Ju-Hyuk), a servant of the young scholar Lee Mong-lyong. Bang-Ja is normally an incidental character in Chunhyang-jeon who does little more than act as a go-between for the star-crossed lovers, but here he’s elevated to center stage and the result is a funny, touching, unexpected twist on a classic tale. Writer/director Kim Dae-Woo, who crafts pure cinematic magic here, also wrote the script for 2003’s Untold Scandal, the hit Korean riff on Dangerous Liasions. --- [ WHAT IS YOUR CHAFFING EDITOR LISTENING TO ] THE COLDEST DAY Leslie Cheung Kwok Wing http://youtu.be/9hJ-s9vs92U ---------------------- HK Top Ten Central hktopten@hotmail.com http://hktopten.orgfree.com | http://hktopten.blogspot.com
