APPLE DAILY, APRIL 11 2011 DEANIE IP: INVINCIBLE HONG KONG FILM AWARD BEST ACTRESS CHING WAN WITH TWO SHOTS CRUSHES WA JAI FOR BEST ACTOR The 31st Hong Kong Film Award will take place on Sunday (the 15th) at the Tsim Sha Tsui Cultural Center, the winners will be unveiled in time. Only Best Actress without any doubt will go to A SIMPLE LIFE (TOH JEH)'s Deanie Ip Tak Han and make her the winner of six Best Actress awards. As for Best Actor, A SIMPLE LIFE's Andy Lau Tak Wa will be RUNNING OUT OF TIME with LIFE WITHOUT PRINCIPLE (DUET MING GUM)'s Lau Ching Wan. Ching Wan's character Panther stands out, with his almost god like acting, Panther has a better chance to win than Wa Jai. - Lee Sam Best Actor Ching Wan Is A Honorable Thug, Wa Jai Is Simple And Natural The most recent rise of Hong Kong film has elevated Hong Kong actors' chances in recent Hong Kong film Awards, which has become an alternative unwritten rule. This year's Hong Kong Film Award Best Actor Nominees pit Hong Kong stars Lau Tak Wa and Lau Ching Wan against Mainland gang Ge You and Jiang Wen. Omitting the unwritten rule, in terms of movies Best Actor definitely will only be a competition between Wa Jai and Ching Wan. Although Ching Wan is nominated for both OVERHEARD 2 (SIT TING FUNG WON 2) and LIFE WITHOUT PRINCIPLE (DUET MING GUM) and has a chance to splitting his votes, his grasp of LIFE's character Panther is accurate. Walking between thug and honor, he plays the city thug convincingly. On the other nad A SIMPLE LIFE's Lau Tak Wa performs simply, naturally and even better than before. Yet in comparison with Lau Ching Wan's acting, his performance in this film is slightly off. Thus Ching Wan has a chance to win another Hong Kong Film Award Best Actor after MY NAME IS FAME (NGOR YIU SING MING). BEST ACTOR Andy Lau Tak Wa (A SIMPLE LIFE) Lau Ching Wan (LIFE WITHOUT PRINCIPLES) Lau Ching Wan (OVERHEARD 2) Jiang Wen (LET THE BULLETS FLY) Ge You (LET THE BULLETS FLY) BEST ACTRESS Sister Deanie Is Expected To Win Her Sixth Last year Carina Lau Ka Ling with DETECTIVE DEE AND THE MYSTERY OF THE PHANTOM FLAME (DIK YUN KIT ji TUNG TIN DAI GOK)'s Wu Zetian won Best Actress. Her nomination for a lead acting role with a supporting role already made some question whether the award show has become a place of seniority. Yet a similar incident absolutely would not happen this year, the 63 year old Ip Tak Han has already won five Best Actress awards at different film festivals and award shows like the Venice Film Festival and the Golden Horse Award. With her superb performance with shape, spirit and meaning in the film, the jury conceivably would not dare to make another choice. In addition the competition was uneven, at best only A BEAUTIFUL LIFE's Shu Qi might make a dent. With timing, location and people in coordination, Barcelona soccer team might lose but Deanie will certainly win. After winning two Best Supporting Actress Hong Kong Film Award, she will win her first Best Actress award. Sister Deanie yesterday humbly said, "No, everyone has even chances. No one knows until the announcement is made. I haven't seen their films yet." Does she hope to win with Wa Jai? Sister Deanie said, "Hopefully!" Does she agree that the competition will be between Wa Jai and Ching Wan? She said, "I didn't watch all of Ching Wan's movies, I only saw LIFE WITHOUT PRINCIPLE. I can't comment." BEST ACTRESS Shu Qi (A BEAUTIFUL LIFE) Tang Wei (WU XIA) Deanie Ip Tak Han (A SIMPLE LIFE) Gao Yuanyuan (DON'T GO BREAKING MY HEART) Zhou Xun (FLYING DRAGONS OF DRAGON GATE) Best Supporting Actor Tsang Kong's Sword Within A Smile Is Mighty This year's Best Supporting Actor nominations aside from last year's Best Actor Nicholas Tse Ting Fung all are elder generation actors. In terms of acting each of their performance methods no longer exposes any edges. Among them Kenneth Tsang Kong in OVERHEARD 2 plays an old stock market sly fox and leaves the deepest impression. With his dark and reserved eyes he plays an elder with a sword hidden in his smile without any restriction. In addition with the unwritten rule of better chances for Hong Kong actors, he has higher chance to win. Of course the comeback of the One Armed Swordsman Jimmy Wang Yu has a presence that holds down the scene as soon as he appears in WU XIA, mighty without anger. Yet with the gradually rising domestic senses in recent years, under similar conditions Tsang Kong has a better chance. BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR Jimmn Wang Yu (WU XIA) Paul Chun Pui (A SIMPLE LIFE) Nicholas Tse Ting Fung (SHAOLIN) Lo Hoi Pang (LIFE WITHOUT PRINCIPLE) Kenneth Tsang Kong (OVERHEARD 2) Best Supporting Actress In comparison to the Best Supporting Actor's excellent performances, Best Supporting Actress nominees due to script limitations in their movies have no role to play and no chance to perform. After Best Picture and Best Director, it has become another jury vote disaster area that is hard to select suitable nominees. After removing three nominees without much going for them, the only ones left are the only veteran actress who has been away from film and television for years So Hung Shuen and last year's Best Actress Lau Ka Ling. The former's performance is so good that no more can be said. The problem is she only appears in a few shots but her performance is still outstanding. Ka Ling in LET THE BULLETS FLY maintains her usual quality. Ka Ling still has a slight edge. BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS Wai Ying Hung (WU XIA) Qin Hailu (A SIMPLE LIFE) So Hung Shuen (LIFE WITHOUT PRINCIPLE) Kwai Lun-Mei (FLYING SWORDS OF DRAGON GATE) Carina Lau Ka Ling (LET THE BULLETS FLY) Best Picture and Best Director Hui On Wa Runs Into Ah To In Her Way Being bested at every turn is this year's Hong Kong Film Award's bright spot, as Best Director and Best Picture are both dogfights between Ann Hui On wa and Johnnie To Kei Fung. In terms of movies, To Kei Fung's LIFE WITHOUT PRINCIPLE has outstanding plotting and makes a great companion to Ann's A SIMPLE LIFE light as water, without any climax, rise or fall pace. From a viewer standpoint, the former undoubtedly is attractive. Yet from a jury standpoint and without other award show's results, conceivably A SIMPLE LIFE has a higher chance to win Best Picture. As for Best Director, industry insider says that this is a disastrous vote without any doubt; unlike the Chief Executive election that has the will of a higher authority to study from. Yet To Kei Fung's direction that hits every note is likely to win him another award. BEST PICTURE/DIRECTOR Ann Hui On Wa (A SIMPLE LIFE) Johnnie To Kei Fung (LIFE WITHOUT PRINCIPLE) Tsui Hark (FLYING SWORDS OF DRAGON GATE) Alan Mak Siu Fai, Felix Chong Man Keung (OVERHEARD 2) Jiang Wen (LET THE BULLETS FLY) Best New Performer Lin Si Nga Parties To Victory The Best New Performer nominees include China, Hong Kong and Taiwan actors. No matter what they have already made their first achievement in life -- a nomination. Whether they will or not they should have no regret. Of course with the rise of Hong Kong film, Hong Kong woman Shiga Lin Si Nga with LAN KWAI FONG is also seen as the favorite. The 23 year old Lin Si Nga as a singer indeed makes a decent big screen debut. Playing a character of her age she is even more at ease. Her singer identity also helps her grasp the emotions and thus she is seen as the favorite. BEST NEW PERFORMER Jam Hsiao (THE KILLER WHO NEVER KILLS) Shiga Lin (LAN KWAI FONG) Zheng Shuang (MURAL) Karena Ng Chin yu (MAGIC TO WIN) Sheng Chien (FLYING SWORDS OF DRAGON GATE) 3. MISCELLANEOUS * (2012/04/11) In the past Easter holiday, foreign films overran the cinemas with only one Hong Kong film LOVE IN THE BUFF (CHUN GIU YU JI MING). Yet with one against ten it became the Easter box office champion. According to the Hong Kong Motion Picture Industry Association provided data from April 6 to 9 the total box office revenue was HK$26,722,754, 10.24% rise from Easter last year. The Miriam Yeung Chin Wa and Shawn Yue Man Lok starred LOVE IN THE BUFF even fended off many big Hollywood productions as it topped the Easter box office with HK$6,557,647. Following it was MIRROR MIRROR with HK$3,954,489, 2 million less than LOVE; TITANIC 3D, THE LORAX and THE HUNGER GAMES. The top five films have a total box office of HK$19,851,853. * (2012/04/11) Daniel Chan Hiu Tung and Eric Moo (Mo Kai Yin) yesterday attended the film WE NOT NAUGHTY press conference. The film will open Friday in Taiwan and has already opened in Singapore and Malaysia. They hoped that the film will be able to perform well in Taiwan as well. This time director Jack Neo (Leung Chi Keung) asked Chan Hiu Tung to star as the "cattle class" teacher. In the film he had to fulfill his promise as a teacher and streak. Chan Hiu Tung tossed away his idol burden for this scene and streaked in front of 200 students. Speaking of this scene, Tung Tung said that at the first he was not bashful at all and did not ask for the set to be cleared. He said that he did not know where the courage came from. He felt that as long as he was in a film production, he was particularly self confident about things that he normally would not do. Leung Chi Keung admitted that at first he was worried that Tung Tung would not agree. Tung Tung at first hesitated but finally still gave his all. Ko Chen-Tung in YOU ARE THE APPLE OF MY EYE also had a rear revealing scene. The comparison was inevitable. Chan Hiu Tung was super confident about his rear. Mo Kai Yin also said that he looked pretty good. Yet whose was better? Tung Tung bashfully pretended to be busy and ended the subject. Chan Hiu Tung also was asked he would repay fans by streaking if the film would perform well in Taiwan. He immediately said, "If I do it again, no one would ask me to make a movie!" * (2012/04/11) Jason Chan Pak Yu yesterday attended the 2012 1st Toronto Chinese Film Festival award presentation (Hong Kong)" at the Film Archive. Winning Excellent Actor with LAN KWAI FONG (HEI OI YEH PO) Chan Pak Yu said that he did not know whether this was his first film award. He said that the company hoped that he would focus on music and thus he did not actively looking for movie opportunities. He hoped to have a chance to make police films in the future. Chan Pak Yu also said that earlier he went to Taiwan for half a month and gained a lot of weight. Thus now he has to actively lose weight. Reporters said that he gained weight from dating. He said that it was one of the reasons. Earlier he and his girlfriend were caught dating, Chan Pak Yu said, "Girlfriend doesn't mind having her picture taken, but she minds that she was caught without make up. Ultimately girls like to be pretty for pictures." In addition the transgender cop Kitty Lai won Best Actor with MARIAGE SANS FRONTIERES won Best Actor but did not attend the ceremony. Producer Nip Ling revealed that he could not contact him recently and guessed that he was overseas. The final contact was already a month ago. Was she worried that Kitty would have emotional issue? She said, "Probably a little stress, but Kitty was very happy to learn about the award." * (2012/04/11) Pang Ho Cheung, Jaycee Chan (Fong Cho Ming) and Sire Ma Choi yesterday appeared on the radio through different telephone interviews. Pang Ho Cheung asked Linda Wong Hing Ping to make LOVE IN THE BUFF (CHUN GIU YU JI MING) but because the line the recalled Wong Hing Ping's past relationship in the film her father Jimmy Wang Yu was enraged; Pang Ho Cheung admitted that he felt very sorry and never guessed that such a line would lead to misunderstanding and displeasure and troubled everyone. He has already called Wong Hing Ping and Kevin Cheng Ka Wing to apologize. Wong Hing Ping said that she had no problem, while Cheng Ka Wing joked that he wanted dinner from him and Chin Wa. As for the third film, Pang Ho Cheung said that the script has to be completed first. At the soonest it will not start production until the end of next year. Fong Cho Ming earlier returned to Hong Kong for his father Jackie Chan's birthday party. Cho Ming joked that because he wanted to save money, he chose to hold it at his father's studio. He said that now he is responsible for managing his father's wine cellar. That night he brought the boxes of wine from his father's friends and his father's new film CHINESE ZODIAC trailer was shown. On Joan Lin (Lam Fung Giu)'s birthday, Cho Ming wrote a song for Mommy. Did he get a gift or write a song for Jackie Chan? He said no, but his manager taught him to give his movie tickets to promote. He said that Papa said no party next year because he was very tired that night. Finally Papa even fell asleep at the studio. Originally Cho Ming invited Fiona Sit Hoi Kei to attend, but she had to record a song and was unable to. * (2012/04/10) Due to LAN KWAI FONG (HEI OI YEH PO)'s low budget success and Shiga Lin Si Nga's Hong Kong Film Award Best New Performer nomination, the film decided to make a sequel. Many like Wylie Chiu Shek Chi, Angelebaby's junior colleague Yang Ding Ding and model Mandy Lieu were in the running for the lead but finally turned it down. Wilson Chin Kwok Wai thought that Christine Kuo was a fresh face and TVB was willing, so Lady Kuo landed the break through performance and love scene with male lead Kelvin Kwan Chor Yiu. Chin Kwok Wai admitted that Lady Kuo was in negotiation and said that TVB artists who made the jump to the big screen with a sexy performance was not surprising. "TVB has many bra and kiss scenes, no different from this character! Actually she will handle the basic bed scene and kiss scene, leaving the heavy lifting to Mia (Chen Jing Yi)!" * (2012/04/10) LOVE IN THE BUFF (CHUN GIU YU JI MING) after its release on the 29th already made over HK$20 million at the box office. Although the Mainland performance has been just as encouraging for the film company, due to the severe Mainland piracy issue not only illegal download online but also counterfeit videos were available. Director Pang Ho Cheung said that they put so much effort into a movie, but when everyone watch it online and upload LOVE IN THE BUFF they are not just taking 50 yuan from his pocket but directly reduce the film company's investment desire and rob film professionals of opportunities to continue to create. However, the director remained very pleased with the film's box office success. Earlier at the celebration he said that if the box office would pass 20 million he would perform in the DON'T ASK WHO I AM music video. He said he would not have time in the near future though as in ten days he would go on vacation, perhaps he would shoot it after his return. By then the box office should pass 30 million. Luckily the producer had a measuring tape on hand and immediately took the director's measurements for the costume. Shawn Yue Man Lok earlier in a media interview asked Media Asia record colleagues to release his DON'T ASK WHO I AM music video for karaoke boxes. The record company has been actively pursuing this. Ah Lok said although he was not used to seeing himself as a woman, his buddies often asked him when it would air and that the karaoke video was Linda Wong Hing Ping's video but they had his look in their minds. They also said that at the end of the year they would promote him to compete for Best New Female Artist at music award shows. He joked, "The more they talked even I feel I am very pretty and hot, asking the company to create a concert in which I just sang girl songs would be a pretty good idea." In the film Chun Giu was suspected to have a relationship with Dior Cheng Yi Kin. Their photos were posted online. Chin Wa who is on her maternity leave joked, "Some viewers are really funny, the movie has gone to their brains. Sigh, I am laughing myself to death. In our business though, I have been in many pictures with many artists. However I really never imagine viewers after the movie would go back and look for them, and even said that they confirmed Chun Giu and Ekin really dated. Maybe this proves that everyone really got into the movie." * (2012/04/10) The China Film Directors' Guild Awards took place for the third time in Beijing. Zhang Ziyi with LOVE FOR LIFE (JUI OI) defeated strong competition from Fan Bingbing, Qin Hailu and Shu Qi to win Actress of the Year. Ge You with LET THE BULLETS FLY won Actor of the Year. The Directors' Guild presented this award to Zhang Ziyi because her character not only required excellent acting but also ample presence and rich emotions. Zhang Ziyi accepted the Actress of the Year award from last year's Directors Guild Best Actress Xu Fan. Zhang Ziyi said, "When I made movies before, If I was able to receive one director's recognition I would feel very happy; today I receive so many directors' recognition, I am particularly happy......I indeed am a very lucky actress. Since I started acting at 19, I have had the opportunity to work with many excellent directors. Through their lenses I experienced different characters' joy, sorrow and fate, I grew up in the film production process. Thank you all the directors who have worked with me, and thank you to all the directors who will work with me. I always believe, the best movie will be the next one." In addition, LET THE BULLETS FLY won Best Director, Best Film and Best Actor. This film's director and star Jiang Wen said, "The past (honors) were all accepted with my hands, this one I accept with my heart." Jiang Wen also pointed out that LET THE BULLETS FLY have brought them many honors. Even if the film did not win last night he still would have been elated to be here. Now that the award went to him, he felt as though his victory was not certain. Johnnie To Kei Fung with DON'T GO BREAKING MY HEART (DAN SUN NAM NUI) won Hong Kong and Taiwan Director of the Year. * (2012/04/09) Hong Kong and Mainland co-production films have already been in development for ten years. As many famous Hong Kong directors returned to the Mainland to make movies, Hong Kong film also fell. Even the highest grossing film title went to a Taiwan film. Which famous Hong Kong director is the most popular in the Mainland and has the most viewer trust? A Mainland survey asked Mainland film critics and viewers to vote for the most credible Hong Kong director. Tsui Hark and Johnnie To Kei Fung led while Wong Jing had high viewer trust but low rating for his work. 10 film critics and 100 viewers were surveyed in the Mainland about 16 Hong Kong directors' credibility and their Mainland film release last year. Among the film critics, the highest credibility went to To Kei Fung and Tsui Hark followed. Only these two directors scored over 80. Other directors, aside from Alan Mak Siu Fai, Felix Chong Man Keung, Peter Chan Ho Sun, Daniel Lee Yan Kong, Wilson Yip Wai Shun and Benny Chan Muk Sing scoring between 50 to 70, did not pass. Jeff Lau Chun Wai had the lowest score with only 20.6! Lau Chun Wai's past classics included EAGLE SHOOTING HEROES (DONG SING SAI JAU) and CHINESE ODYSSEY: PANDORA'S BOX (YUET GUONG BO HUP), but his recent films JUST ANOTHER PANDORA'S BOX (YUET GUONG BO HUP) and EAST MEETS WEST 2011 (DONG SING SAI JAU 2011) might have had passable box office but were all rotten films. Thus he was the representation of living on his past glory. As for Tsui Hark, his high score was due to breaking through himself. His FLYING SWORDS OF DRAGON GATE (LUNG MOON FEI GAP) last year had both good box office and word of mouth. To Kei Fung received praises for maintaining his own style as well as quality. With the 100 viewers, the top two remained Tsui Hark and To Kei Fung. Only their orders were switched. Tsui Hark was first and To Kei Fung second. Tsui Hark had an average viewer score of 84.5, his FLYING SWORDS OF DRAGON GATE even reached 87.3; To Kei Fung's credibility reached 81.5, while his DON'T GO BREAKING MY HEART (DAN SUN NAM NUI) scored 81.1. Directors with an average score between 70 and 80 were in order Chan Ho Sun, Mak Siu Fai and Chong Man Keung, Wong Jing, Chan Muk Sing and Lee Kong Yan; scoring between 60 and 70 and rated as "untrustworthy" directors were Gordon Chan Ka Seung and Wilson Yip Wai Shun. Viewers not only categorized the directors but also graded their work last year. Rated highly credible Wong Jing and Lee Yan Kong had low rated work. Wong Jing's TREASURE INN (CHOI SUN HAT JANG) only scored 58.2, proving that they too had their flawed moments. Wong Jing was accused of breaking many viewers' hearts. He admitted online, "I don't dare to be compared with Tsui and To. I am truly ashamed to be below their par. Yet from 87 to 99 my peak condition was maintained for 12 years. In 2000 and 01 I switched to become an administrator then directed again, I couldn't return to my top form. I understand that I can't rush it, I keep treating myself as a newcomer and start over again. I don't care about how others see me. This year, I feel my condition has been elevated. I hope to be able to hand in even better test papers very soon." To Kei Fung thanked everyone and hoped viewers would continue to love movies because he likes movies very much. * (2012/04/09) Two generations of "Mou Girl" Gong Li and Zhang Ziyi last night dressed up to attend the China Film Directors' Guild Award. Zhang Ziyi with LOVE FOR LIFE (JUI OI) won the Best Actress of the Year award. During her interview she revealed that THE GRANDMASTERS (YUT DOI JUNG SI) is still far from its completion, as she described it to be "still on the road of Grand Master!" Zhang Ziyi and her LOVE FOR LIFE co-star Aaron Kwok Fu Sing walked the red carpet hand in hand and caused a stir. When Sing Sing and Chen Kun announced Zhang Ziyi's Best Actress award, she was emotional. "I never imagine that I would have the China Directors Guild's recognition. I am a very lucky actress. I started making movies at age 19 and has worked with many famous directors, experienced different people's joy, sorrow, and destiny, I grew up in my performance. I always believe that the best movie is the next one." When asked about working with directors like Zhang Yimou and Ang Lee, she said, "Zhang Yimou is a very generous elder, Ang Lee uses a very even tempered method to display actors' potential or perhaps 'squeeze' the most out of them." Earlier when she made MEMOIRS OF A GEISHA, the foreign director praised her everyday, which she was not used to." She also revealed that her new film plans included the in production AN INACCURATE MEMOIR, the confirmed SOPHIE'S REVENGE 2 (FEI SEUNG YUEN MEI 2) and the long way off THE GRANDMASTERS. "It is still on the journey of the Grand Master. It has no way to go to Cannes and I have no idea when it will be done with editing? When will the promotion start?" Sing Sing lost Best Actor to LET THE BULLETS FLY's Ge You. LET THE BULLETS FLY also won Film of the Year; To Kei Fung received the Hong Kong Taiwan Director of the Year. Neither attended. * (2012/04/09) The Andy Lau Tak Wa recommended, Focus Theatre Limited imported to Hong Kong for the first time play THE YELLOW STORM two nights ago performed three shows over two days. The opening night was quite a success. The proceeds from the three shows will be donated to the Andy Lau charitable foundation. Lau Tak Wa during intermission rushed backstage to visit and cheer for the cast. He and Deanie Ip Tak Han chased down Qin Hailu who was made up to look old for a photo. Wa Jai joked that standing next to Qin Hailu, he and Sister Deanie immediately looked younger. Although the intermission was only 15 minutes, Wa Jai and Sister Deanie ran backstage to greet everyone. After the actors saw Wa Jai they immediately went into a frenzy and they fought for photos with him, as if it was a Wa Jai mini fan club meeting. Wa Jai and Sister Deanie aside from posing with the cast even mischievously chased down Qin Hailu for a photo. They said that Hailu's cute fat old lady look was rare and they even made their own poses and faces like three big kids. Hailu enjoyed being among this "mother and son" pair. Before the opening, the China National Theater chief and all the cast posed with investor of their Hong Kong performance Lau Tak Wa. The team seriously got into position and waited for Wa Jai to stand in the middle, as if they were posing for their graduation photo. THE YELLOW STORM's first show received overwhelming response. After the show the cast thanked the audience and received thunderous applause. Qin Hailu's performance opened everyone's eyes because the character showcased her in a way that was never before seen in film. She left a deep impression with the audience. Many female viewers like Candice Yu On On and Fala Chen were moved to tears by Huang Lei's character. Actually Fala Chen has always been a Huang Lei fan. She has always watched his film and television series performance. Thus after the show Fala dragged Steven Ma Chun Wai backstage to meet Huang Lei. The little fan could not be more excited to see Huang Lei. Originally she wanted to take a photo with her phone but since he was removing his make up she did not want to disturb him. Finally Fala received an autographed from Teacher Huang and she was very grateful. She said that she reaped a full harvest from watching this play. * (2012/04/09) April 7 was Big Brother Jackie Chan's 58th birthday. His wife Joan Lin (Lam Fung Giu) and son Jaycee Chan (Fong Cho Ming) two nights ago held a birthday party at his Clearwater Bay studio and invited 200 friends and family to attend. Cho Ming this time even deliberately returned to Hong Kong from Taiwan and set up for the event with his mother. Many balloons with the words "Jacky Happy Birthday" decorated the location. His family even ordered a birthday cake with his likeness. That night, many friends like Sally Yeh (Yip Sin Man), Stephen Fung Tak Lun, Daniel Wu (Ng Yin Cho), Lisa S., Liu Chia-Chang and his son, Ko Chen-Tung, Willie Chan Chi Keung, Leo Ku Kui Ke, Hu Xia, Mabel Cheung Yuen Ting, Alex Law Kai Yui and Andrew Lau Wai Keung attended. Big Brother was happy to be with so many friends on such a rare occasion. Cho Ming said that since Papa never liked to accept gifts, he gave tickets to his movie to him. In addition, Cho Ming two nights ago with Hu Xia, Ko Chen-Tung and Ng Yin Cho joked that they were the new group "B4". Chan Chi Keung stayed for a short while and left. As for a gift, he said that Big Brother has everything and did not need any. Jackie Chan later thanked everyone online. "With so many friends to celebrate my birthday with, I am truly thankful to everyone. I love you. I would repay you with the greatest movie, wait for my CHINESE ZODIAC. I can't believe I would receive over several hundred thousand birthday wishes on one day. I would give this happiness to all mankind." * (2012/04/08) Luck has not been going Donnie Yen Chi Tan's way lately. His new film 3D THE ICEMAN COMETH (3D GUP DUNG KEI HUP) due to the story background was rumored to run ashore at script inspection and that due to financing issues the film might be scrapped. Actress Bai Baihe said that her schedule was freed up. The film company's Ms. Leung said "Mr. Yen's schedule has an issue" and finally the production might be postponed until August to start. Chi tan planned to finish as soon as possible. * (2012/04/08) Jackie Chan turned 58 yesterday and held a barbecue at his Sai Kung studio. His son Jaycee Chan (Fong Cho Ming) came to Hong Kong to celebrate and his wife Joan Lin (Lam Fung Giu) cut his birthday cake with him. Last night many friends in the business came to congratulate him. They included Sally Yeh (Yip Sin Man), Liu Chia-Chang, his wife and their son Jeremy Liu, Daniel Wu (Ng Yin Cho) and his wife Lisa S., Leo Ku Kui ke, Ko Chen-Tung, Hu Xia, Willie Chan Chi Keung, Mabel Cheung Yuen Ting, Alex Law Kai Yui and others. The star not only presented a birthday cake in the shape of an animated Jackie Chan but also a "Best Boss" award to Jackie Chan. Earlier Jackie Chan's wife Lam Fung Giu celebrated her 60th birthday and Cho Ming held a surprise party for his mother, which made his father jealous. Thus Cho Ming yesterday rushed back from Taiwan to attend the birthday party. Outside the studio was a giant balloon with "Jackie Happy Birthday" on it. Many children were on hand and made the place look like an amusement park. Friends gradually arrived and Jackie Chan appeared around 8PM. He said about his birthday wish, "I wish for world peace and harmony for Hong Kong." He said that he was busy with the guests and returned to the studio. Guest Ken Wong Hap Hei was asked about his present for Jackie Chan? He said that he gave his heart. Cho Ming left the airport around 3PM with 9 boxes of pineapple, honey dew melons and other Taiwan delicacy. He said all were his mother Lam Fung Giu's favorite so even when he had to pay for extra baggage he did not mind. Because the company covered it he did not know how much the fine was. He said that recently he caught whooping cough so he did not drink at his father's party. He would be the designated driver. As for his gift, Cho Ming said that he gave his film DOUBLE TROUBLE (BO DOH SEUNG HUNG) tickets. Although the film will be released in Beijing and Taiwan, he joked that his father has a plane so he would not give plane tickets. * (2012/04/08) The Huang Lei and Qin Hailu starred the "Top Play of Beijing", THE YELLOW STORM, is imported into Hong Kong for the first time. Starting last night it held a three show charity run at the Cultural Center. The first show's proceeds will be donated to the "Andy Lau Charity Foundation". Last night many industry insiders came in support. They included Andy Lau Tak Wa, Deanie Ip Tak Han, Fala Chen and Cherie Chung Chor Hung. Soon to be a father, Wa Jai inevitably stole the show as he politely informed the media that he would not conduct any interview. Sister Deanie said that she liked to watch plays but worried that her Putonghua was not good enough to understand. Was Sister Deanie interested in performing a play? She said, "Earlier someone asked, unfortunately due to script and cast issues I didn't perform." Reporters suggested that she could ask Lau Tak Wa to invest in a show. She said, "When would he have the time? Let it be." Sister Deanie said that she enjoyed Broadway shows very much and hoped to have a chance to work with Wa Jai, Andy Hui Chi On, Eason Chan Yik Shun and others. Earlier Sister Deanie enjoyed Ivana Wong Yuen Chi's musical and concert and praised her as a rare talent. She said, "She is a good actress, a good singer, very rarely she is able to turn her original voice into another type of sound, which is something to be happy about." * (2012/04/07) Donnie Yen Chi Tan and Vincent Zhao Wenzhou earlier caused a storm while working together on DUT SHU SUN FUN (SPECIAL IDENTITY) (formerly JUNG GIK GAI MA (ULTIMATE DECODING)). Two days ago the film had new development as Mainland director and screenwriter Tan Bing held a press conference and made several accusations against Chi Tan. Aside from accusing him while working together in order to take the producer role that was Jackie Chan's originally "refused to shoot". Later he also rejected Mainland actor Han Geng's addition, even terminated him from the director and the screenwriter roles and turned JUNG into DUT SHU SUN FUN. Tan Bing even said that Chi Tan's driver murdered Zhao Wenzhou's driver, but the team has already denied that. As for the accusation that Chi Tan rejected Han Geng's addition, Han Geng's manager had no idea and even said that Han Geng due to a record release this year had a scheduling conflict. * (2012/04/07) Andy Hui Chi On, HotCha, Wylie Chiu Shek Chi, Real Ting Chi Ko and others two nights ago attended a fashion event at Central. Chiu Shek Chi recently has been working on the film MY WIFE IS EIGHTEEN 2 (NGOR LO POR MEI GAU CHING 2) with Dior Cheng Yi Kin. In the film Wylie played a diving instructor who had to abuse Ekin. She said Ekin is Prince Cheng in the hearts of many and also her idol. When she saw him she messed up her lines. Many women had fantasy about Ekin but she did not dare to as she was afraid of disappointment. Although Ekin loved diving he did not give her any tip because she had a diving certification. Aside from experience she also has participated in conservation events. Wylie did not like to dive in Hong Kong because she already spoiled her. As a "new comer" she already dove in Malaysia and saw its beautiful coral. Thus she had no interest in Hong Kong's ocean life. Miriam Yeung Chin Wa is expecting to be a mother in June. Ting Chi Ko will soon become a father and needed to prepare everything in advance. Since their child has yet to be born, he has not been excited yet. He believed that when his wife will enter the delivery room will be the most intense moment. As for their child's name, Mr. Ting said that he will leave it up to a master. He however has an idea for an English name. Since his father's relatives all had names that started with the letter T, with his last name Ting a "double T" autograph would look better. Although Mr. Ting wanted to pose for photos with his pregnant wife, they were never able to make time for it. Chin Wa despite her leave still had events every week and film promotions. He would like her film LOVE IN THE BUFF (CHUN GIU YU JI MING) to have a second celebration because the film's box office was great. * (2012/04/07) The film LIVES IN FLAMES (HEI SAI YIU GWUN) including the band Mr., Mag Lam Yun Tung, Michelle Wai (Si Nga), Jeana Ho Pui Yu and Bonnie Xian (Sin Sik Lai) yesterday promoted the film in Whampoa as the cast performed songs at the event. In the film Mr.'s lead singer Allen and Si Nga developed a love triangle with Lam Yun Tung, who did not have any intimate scene with Allen. Instead Si Nga and Allen had a kiss scene. Did her company turn down the kiss scene to protect her image? Lam Yun Tung said that it was the arrangement in the script, she only performed according to the script. Would she choose her co-star before making a kiss scene? Lam Yun Tung said, "This wouldn't be my choice. I have to perform according to the script and the job." Lam Yun Tung with several films under her belt for now would not spend too much time on movies. She said that singing was her favorite job so in the future she will focus on music. Pet owner Si Nga revealed that she has a kitten and a puppy at home, but her kitten recently suddenly became pregnant. She said, "At first I was confused, thinking that it was the puppy. Later Mama said that actually a male cat constantly came to our home and she believed it was the culprit. Now I would properly arrange for ideal living space for the kitten's pregnancy." Si Nga said her home was rather open and constantly had small animals come and go. Would someone of the opposite sex enter her home, Si Nga joked, "My puppy would know to protect me." * (2012/04/07) Clifton Ko Chi Sum's ATV program invited THE SOUL OF BREAD leads Michelle Chen and Chen Han-Tien for an interview. Michelle Chen who exploded onto the scene with YOU ARE THE APPLE OF MY EYE was asked about the feeling of being called "the People's Goddess". She said that she was very lucky and had to thank many people. Ko Chi Sum and Chen Han-Tien both praised her beauty that gives people a clean and refreshing feeling of the girl next door, so many male viewers would easily fall for her. Chen Han-Tien was often the subject of Little S' abuse on her television program. He already had a "comic sense", since he was little others would smile when they saw him. Thus he liked to play comedy, of course he would like to a well rounded artist. In the film they had a kiss scene. Chen Han-Tien admitted that he was very nervous at the time, not only because his co-star was "goddess" class but also because it was his first kiss scene. Luckily Michelle Chen helped and comforted him. Michelle Chen said that the kiss scene felt OK and even praised Chen Han-Tien as "great" so his co-star felt her trust. Speaking of Taiwan film development, Chen Han-Tien felt that in recent years Taiwan films were closer to everyone's lives and easily touch viewer hearts. Michelle Chen thought that Taiwan film had more variety other than mainly romance. * (2012/04/07) Sam Hui Koon Kit's four show concert will officially open next Friday. Hui Koon Kit has been rehearsing. Two days ago he even rehearsed with his brothers Michael Hui Koon Man and Hui Koon Mo Ricky Hui Koon Ying's classic hit MERCILESS NIGHT COLD WIND, Sam got sentimental when he remembered his late brother. The team cheered him up and joked with him, "The show hasn't opened yet, you are already so emotional!" The Hui Brothers have always been close. Every time Sam had a concert Ah Ying would be a part of it. Although Ah Ying has departed, Sam would still save his a spot at this show and arranged for the brothers to sing with Ah Ying through the big screen his classic hit MERCILESS NIGHT COLD WING. Two days ago at rehearsal, when the brothers stared at Ah Ying who was performing on the computer screen, Sam got teary eyed. The team immediately handed his tissues and the musicians even started the music so Sam would be able to bring himself back to the rehearsal and forget the sorrow temporarily. Sam's son Ryan Hui Wai Yun played the guitar for his father's rehearsal while the other played the harmonica on LATE NIGHT LIGHT PRIVATE WORDS. Sam in two short hours rehearsed almost 20 songs. First time guest star for her idol Sam, Kay Tse On Kay were thoroughly amazed. Kay excitedly said, "My manager didn't tell me until three days ago about being invited to be a part of Sam Gor's concert. I am very nervous. I rehearsed with him for the first time. He really is very easy going and very professional. As soon as he arrives he can give you a motivation and bring you very quickly into the music. I enjoy this feeling very much." Kay said that singers usually would hold back a little at the rehearsal before the show to avoid affecting their voices, but Sam Gor sang all he wanted and displayed his experience. Her eyes were opened. Although the rehearsal room's air conditioning was super cold, Sam still wore a tank top to the rehearsal. His stamina was great and even made Kay immediately remove her jacket to experience that cool rehearsal feeling with him. Although Sam performed with Kay for the first time, he had nothing but praised for her singing. They rehearsed three songs at once. When they started LET IT BE ME, Sam got more excited and performed it four times. The team joked that "encore" came before the show even opened. Sam said with excitement, "Very Good! Kay, Very Good!" Then they performed Roman Tam (Law Man)'s UNDER THE LION ROCK and mischievously said to the musicians to wrap up with a "Law Gei style" long note in nostalgia. Kay, Sam and Hui Koon Man were all Hong Kong University alumni. She and Sam Gor's son Ryan were close as they often exchanged parenthood tips. Kay will be the guest on the 15th, the "Hong Kong University Night" that will be near and dear to her heart. She along with 50 students will sing with Sam Gor ENLIGHTEN ME WITH VIRTUE, a new song that he wrote for the school. It truly will be a very memorable opportunity. * (2012/04/06) Xiong Xinxin began his career as a stunt professional and doubled for many stars in action films. After toiling away for years, now he finally is an action director and a director. Earlier in a Mainland interview, he criticized some new actors' lack of effort. During the shoot they excessively relied on stunt professionals and special effects. Asking them to make a movie was almost an insult to kung fu films. He also said that when he started, he worked hard and persevered. Finally he caught Gordon Lau Ka Leung's eyes and came to work in Hong Kong. * (2012/04/06) April 6 was director Andrew Lau Wai Keung's 52nd birthday. That night, his YOUNG AND DANGEROUS (GOO WAT JAI) stars Dior Cheng Yi Kin, Michael Tse Tin Wa, Jason Chu Wing Tong, Anthony Wong Chau Sun and Francis Ng Chun Yu celebrated with him. Lau Wai Keung once said that he would like to remake YOUNG AND DANGEROUS with the old team, but now he has changed his mind. "Let the kids make it, I am busy now with THE GUILLOTINES (HUET DIK JI)'s post production. Hopefully it will be completed soon." Lau Wai Keung's birthday wish was for everyone to be healthy. * (2012/04/06) Peter Chan Ho Sun in his new autobiography MY WAY critiqued the acting of Andy Lau Tak Wa, Tony Leung Chiu Wai, Eric Tsang Chi Wai and Jacky Cheung Hok Yau. He described Wa Jai's acting as "McDonald's hamburger" for general public consumption, everyone can accept it but it is no gourmet. Wa Jai spent 20 years to convincing people who did not believe in or like him to become the show business model of success. Chan Ho Sun described Wai Jai to resemble Robert DeNiro. After finding a successful acting method, he kept repeating his successful acting method. Tsang Chi Wai's acting was good but could very easily be over (excessive); Cheung Hok Yau's personality was easy going, but at work he was the most stubborn. Speaking of Leslie Cheung Kwok Wing, Chan Ho Sun lamented, "He was the most qualified to become an outstanding director." * (2012/04/06) The Stephen Fung Tak Lun directed, Chen Kuo-Fu produced, Sammo Hung Kam Bo action choreographed film TAI CHI 0 although will not open until the end of the year has already begun its promotion. The first shot was at the Beijing subway station with the most traffic flow, Guomao Station. Five giant sized posters included Tony Leung Ka Fai as Chen Changxing, Angelababy as Chen Yuniang, Eddie Peng Yu-Yan as Fang Zijing, Feng Shaofeng as Chen Zaiyang and a mysterious Tai Chi master were on display. The film even created the first 45 degree trailer, in which two important actors Shu Qi and Daniel Wu (Ng Yin Cho) could be seen. * (2012/04/05) The 31st Hong Kong Film Award will take place on April 15. This year's Hong Kong Film Award program was unveiled earlier as the Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director, Best Supporting Actor and Actress and Best New Performer nominees appeared. Currently on paternity leave, Andy Lau Tak Wa was rumored to have changed his mind and attend the award show. He also took time for the program photo shoot. Best Actor nominees who participated in the shoot were only Wa Jai and Lau Ching Wan. This year's Hong Kong Film Award theme "Film New Power" brings out the Hong Kong film "heritage" and "perseverance" spirit. Continuing past traditions, the event earlier arranged for nominees to pose for the program shoot. Two time Best Actor and again nominated with A SIMPLE LIFE (TOH JEH), Lau Tak Wa displayed all of his Best Actor flare. However this year's Best Actor nominees who participated in the program shoot were only Wa Jai and Ching Wan. Instead five Best Actress nominees Deanie Ip Tak Han, Zhou Xun, Gao Yuanyuan, Tang Wei and Shu Qi appeared. Others who participated in the shoot included Best Director nominees Ann Hui On Wa, Tsui Hark, Alan Mak Siu Fai and Felix Chong Man Keung, Best Supporting Actor nominees Jimmy Wang Yu, Paul Chun Pui, Lo Hoi Peng and Kenneth Tsang Kong, Best Supporting Actress nominees Wai Ying Hung, Qin Hailu and Kwai Lun-Mei as well as Best New Performer nominees Jam Hsiao (Siu King Tung), Shiga Lin Si Nga, Zheng Shuang, Karena Ng Chin Yu and Sheng Jian. Yesterday Ng Chin Yu and Icon Girls appeared at a shopping center and performed a little ballet dance. Ng Chin Yu said that for this performance she took three ballet lessons, but yesterday she danced like "happy dance". She awkwardly said, "I hope everyone was happy to see it." Speaking of the Hong Kong Film Award Best New Performer nomination, she hoped to win and has seen the other competition. She praised Zheng Shuang and Shiga Lin and said that she would not be disappointed if she would not win. She would properly enjoy her first large scale award show's environment. As for the chance to work on IP MAN 3, she looked forward to working with Yen Chi Tan very much. Although she had pressure she would turn it into motivation. In addition, Cha Siu Yan on her radio program brought out the dispute between Donnie Yen Chi Tan and Wu Jing during SPL (SAT POR LONG). Some said that Yen Chi Tan invited Sammo Hung Kam Bo to participate, which led to no line for Wu Jing, and that he did not hold back when he hit Wu Jing. Cha Siu Yan also revealed that Louis Fan Siu Wong while working on IP MAN 2 had his role reduced. Yen Chi Tan had no comment. * (2012/04/05) In order to promote their new film BREAD OF THE SOUL, leads Chen Han-Tien and new generation goddess Michelle Chen came from Taiwan and two nights ago dressed up for the film's Hong Kong premiere. They first greeted everyone in Cantonese. Chen Han-Ten revealed that in one scene in which he left after Michelle Chen, she suddenly turned around and stepped right on his shoe. However they remained very professional, did not laugh and continued to finish the shoot. Chen Han-Tien as a host in Taiwan often came up with his own ideas, which he demonstrated two nights ago in front of the Hong Kong audience. Near the end of the event he said that he had a gift for the goddess in front of the fans, went down on one knee and brought out a giant diamond ring to propose to Michelle Chen. "Will you marry me?" Michelle Chen was caught off guard and did not know how to respond. She replied in English I do. After the ceremony, Michelle Chen and Chen Han-Tien shook hands with fans and posed for a group photo. Michelle Chen admitted that it was the first time that someone proposed to her in this manner, but at this stage she never thought about marriage. As for diamond rings, she said, "I have accepted diamonds, they were from my parents. I also had some from boyfriend. (Was it as big as this time?) It is appropriately sized. It's just a gift, not for a proposal." During the Hong Kong promotion they have not had any personal time yet. Michelle Chen hoped to be able to walk around after finishing work. Seeing the film company in coordination with the film subject gave everyone a pineapple bun, she admitted that she would like to have the famous Hong Kong butter pineapple bun. Chen Han-Tien only went out around the hotel. He said that he would like to see the Victoria harbor the most. Would they like to go to Lan Kwai Fong? They were interested. In addition, yesterday they went to Mongkok for audience appreciation. When asked about their box office expectation, Michelle Chen said that this film's story was cute and warm and recommended it to everyone. After finishing their final public event in Hong Kong, did they plan to go out? Chen Han-Tien said that he had to return to Taiwan on the same day, Michelle Chen would stay in Hong Kong for interviews but would take time to have dinner with friends. She also admitted that she has been in negotiation to make a Hong Kong film, but she was still in the script review stage. What character would she like to play? She hoped to challenge characters with multiple personalities. Chen Han-Tine said that he would like to play a deranged character. Michelle Chen joked that this character was right for him. As for Hong Kong actor who was like to work with, Chen Han-Tien honestly said Stephen Chow Sing Chi while Michelle Chen would very much like to work with her idol Andy Lau Tak Wa. * (2012/04/05) Sylvia Chang (Cheung Ngai Ga) and Hou Hsiao-Hsien two nights ago attended the 36th Hong Kong International Film Festival premiere of 10+10. The film consisted of five minutes of work from ten directors like Cheung Ngai Ga and Hou Hsiao-Hsien and ten new directors. Cheung Ngai Ga said that she very rarely made short films so it was very hard to control. She said, "I finally made six minutes, before the shoot I asked the project to find a director who has not shot yet to first shoot four minutes." Speaking of Taiwan directors, she said that most were young directors who have a lot of short film experience but no chance to make feature films. How would newcomers be cultivated? She said, "They are cultivating me instead. They have a lot of new ideas. Instead we need more communication. New generation directors are in a very happy era, without any burden on their production. Hou Hsiao-Hsien originally started in a great era, but due to economic recession he ran into 20 years of dark period." Cheung Ngai Ga said that she noticed the recent LOVE IN THE BUFF (CHUN GIU YU JI MING) was very well made, but Hong Kong film did not have wide range of subjects like Taiwan, so Hong Kong needed to have a film festival to promote films more. She said, "This time although I spent two days to shoot the short film, I planned for four months. The project gave me NT$700,000 for the production, but I had to watch my spending because even hotel needed money." * (2012/04/05) The film SUNNY two nights ago held a Hong Kong premiere and attracted many industry insiders. Irene Wan Bik Ha and Julian Cheung Chi Lam both "left" their families and came with assistants. Wan Bik Ha due to the new film postponing its production start would go to Macau with friends on this Easter holiday. An avid film viewer, Cheung Chi Lam said that he supported recent hits A SIMPLE LIFE (TOH JEH), LOVE IN THE BUFF (CHUN GIU YU JI MING) and NIGHTFALL (DAI JUI BO). He was even happier to see Hong Kong film's return and hoped this phenomenon would endure until July or August when his film NATURAL BORN LOVERS (TIN SUN OI CHING KONG) will be released to explode. Will he take his son? Chi Lam said that his movies are very positive and meaningful, of course he will have to have show them to his son. He felt that he has not done anything that was shameful. Chi Lam's wife Anita Yuen Wing Yi in HE IS A WOMAN SHE IS A MAN (GUM JI YUK YIP) had a chest touching scene with Carina Lau Ka Ling. Will he show that to his son? He said, "Yes. This film is quite a classic. My son matures very early and would know what he can touch and what he can't. He even knows what kind of person he can touch and what kind he can't. Actually I don't need to avoid subjects like that with children, as a parent being more natural is even better." [ BLAH OF THE WEEK ] Columns, Reviews, Interviews 1. MING PAO DAILY, APRIL 8 2012, FILM WORDS THE SOUL OF BREAD CATERS TO YOUNG FEMALE VIEWERS Hong Kong films seem to be in the midst of a "small revival". LOVE IN THE BUFF (CHUN GIU YU JI MING) during the Ching Ming and Easter holidays continues to thrive and easily charges past 20 million. As for the critical and commercial hit A SIMPLE LIFE (TOH JEH) it has passed 25 million long ago. NIGHTFALL also passed 17 million. Domestic films rarely succeed in sequence, defeating the surprise hit in the U.S. THE HUNGER GAMES. With advanced screenings recently, the Taiwan romantic comedy THE SOUL OF BREAD is Michelle Chen's new film after rising to fame with YOU ARE THE APPLE OF MY EYE. She remains innocent and cute. This film caters to young female viewers, unlike the frequently masturbating YOU that stirs up guys. Michelle Chen plays a small town bakery daughter who develops a love triangle with elder colleague Chen Han-Tien and the mixed heritage Anthony Neely (Ngai On Tung). The former is lame and honest, the latter is Westernized and handsome as well as an international class chef. One domestic one foreign they conduct a "love and bread" contest. Joint directors Sean Kao Pin-chuan and Lin Chun-Yang shoot smoothly and capture small town flavor and bread taste. With the CAPE NO. & style old neighborhood band, the film speaks English and sings French songs. It can be said as having both Taiwan local color and Westernized trends. The problem is it deliberately pleases and ends up pleasing neither. Its Taiwan box office is not too ideal. Actually this film's comedy sense is decent. The bread baking shoot has a lot of thought put into it. The love triangle is also full of mystery. As for stressing that bread with love is the most delicious, it is all talk and has no way to be proven. You might as well say that when you are hungry everything tastes the best, then it would be the most convincing all around the world. (Two And A Half Out Of Five Stars) Indian Musical Film Mix This week also has BOLLYWOOD BOLLYWOOD, which is not a feature film but a mix of the Bollywood miracle. It brings together the Indian mainstream film historically famous musicals, filling it with handsome men, beautiful women and luxurious sets as well as song and dance. People who like Indian musicals should not miss it, the film would be lacking for others though as it has not truly introduced the complete picture of Indian film. (Two Out Of Five Stars) - SHEK KEI 2. TA KUNG PAO, APRIL 8 2012, LIGHT SHADOW PATH LOVE IN THE BUFF IMPROVES HONG KONG FILM REPUTATION The recently released LOVE IN THE BUFF (CHUN GIU YU JI MING) has been very popular. Its box office has run free like a wild horse, in a week it reached over 14 million. Some directors feel it is the best romantic comedy in a decade, another director even claims that it is a milestone for the "resurrection" of Hong Kong film. The most special part of this film is its faithfulness to Hong Kong film's true nature, as LOVE IN THE BUFF is often mentioned along with A SIMPLE LIFE (TOH JEH) and NIGHTFALL (DAI JUI BO). LOVE in the Mainland and Hong Kong box office has already surpassed NIGHTFALL for sure. In comparison with A SIMPLE LIFE, the result will not be known for several more weeks. Hong Kong viewers naturally love Hong Kong style movies, but a good movie that viewers can relate to is the most important element. YOU ARE THE APPLE OF MY EYE without any Hong Kong flavor is the best example. The same reasoning can be used on different markets. Currently the Mainland film market also heads toward maturity. China style films have to be excellent as well in order to be popular. Around 8 or 9 years ago, the China film market due to the Closer Economic Partnership Arrangement opened its door to Hong Kong films. Early Hong Kong style co-production films (Hong Kong driven) were very popular, 30 million or so at the box office was a casual affair. In 2005 INITIAL D (TAU MAN JI D) almost reached 70 million at the box office, a very strong legitimacy at the time. Later as screen numbers increased, Hong Kong directors began to join the "100 million yuan club" (with films that made over 100 million RMB) one after another. In recent years, Hong Kong film box office momentum has not been as strong as it was before. One of the reasons is that Hong Kong style movies are no longer as fresh as they once were. If they are not excellent films (commercially) they would not have too much legitimacy. Another reason is in comparison to Hong Kong style, China style films (Mainland director driven) are even closer to the audience's taste. However, in the end everyone still have to compete in creative quality. LOVE IN THE BUFF after less than a week in Mainland release already passed 30 million at the box office. Its opening day performance was not considered outstanding, but its staying power was decent. This phenomenon does not clearly state that Mainland viewers love to watch Hong Kong style movies, or that Director Pang has successfully made a Mainland audience taste film. Director Pang again states that he wants to make movies that meet the production rules without losing his own style. He indeed has done so. Just like his Putonghua that now improved much more now, yet if you do not understand any Cantonese you could not understand what he was saying 100%. Commendably though he is not pretending to speak authentic Putonghua. He is honestly expressing himself. Honestly, some of Director Pang's work has elements of pretending to be deep. LOVE IN THE BUFF though is a work that is truly from the heart. Please be mindful that this is not "sincerity", "sincerity" cannot express this film's "real". Some viewers feel this film's foul language is somewhat excessive, and indeed it is. Yet when you see most viewers are laughing so hard, you would forgive the director. Ever since Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire sang “It’s a Fine Romance” in 1936’s Swing Time, movies have been bowing down to the power of love. Unfortunately, Hollywood just doesn’t make romantic comedies the way they used to and these days if you’re looking for love in an American movie, you’re looking for it in all the wrong places. Thank Aphrodite for Korea. Ever since My Sassy Girl broke box office records in 2001, the Korean film industry has been making some of the funniest, most outrageously swoony movie romances, and for this series we’ve picked three of the best. Tuesday, APRIL 10, 2012 @ 7pm PETTY ROMANCE (2010, 118 minutes) A word-of-mouth hit in 2010, this romance is set in the world of manhwa (Korean comic books), and the couple at the center of the story have chemistry to burn. TV star Lee Seon-Gyun is a struggling manhwa artist who enters a competition with a massive cash prize. To raise his chances of winning, he hires a sex advice columnist, Choi Gang-Heui (star of the breakout hit, My Scary Girl), to write his erotic comic. Little does he know that she plagiarized her column from the Kama Sutra and the Kinsey Report because her ideas about sex are a bit…vague, to put it kindly. PETTY ROMANCE been winning hearts and minds on the film festival circuit for a year and it’s a guaranteed crowd pleaser. --- [ WHAT IS YOUR CHAFFING EDITOR LISTENING TO ] SO GOOD B.o.B http://youtu.be/IoBP24I2lwA ---------------------- HK Top Ten Central hktopten@hotmail.com http://hktopten.orgfree.com | http://hktopten.blogspot.com
