In order to William to go even further in the film industry, Emperor Motion Pictures decided to make a Wise Guy story JAT JIK (PROMOTION) and even tailored a character to him. It hoped to make him a Dior Cheng Yi Kin successor and a new generation of Wise Guy. JAT JIK's story reportedly will be very different from past Wise Guy movies. The story will mainly revolve around how a group of ambitious Wise Guys fight for promotions, the subject is extremely controversial; in order to make William's character stand out, director Daniel Chan Yik Hung deliberately made him a Harvard University student who moved up the ranks in the mob with his brain. The mob "family punishment" scene would even challenge film standards as William would not only be take a brutal beat on his upper body but also severe injury on his lower body. William said, "The story hasn't been confirmed yet, so I won't talk about it yet. We are still talking in meetings." He admitted that he did not a lot of homework for his new film. "As a Wise Guy, I have to be big. The last few months I have been in training and on a diet in order to achieve eight pack abs." The lead actress will be Emperor artist Si Nga who will play William's girlfriend. * (2012/02/29) Chrissie Chau Sau Na yesterday revealed that for the film BAUHINIA HEROINE 3D (3D JI GAING HUP) she scheduled a motorcycle license test and had to pass, otherwise she would not be able to perform on the motorcycle. She said, "I plan to ask Mommy because she used to constantly ride the motorcycle on grocery runs. When I was little I constantly rode on the back. She also said that when I got the license I would give her a ride." Earlier burning her thigh at work, she had to ride a motorcycle again. Was she worried about injury? Chrissie said that she was not. Accidents were inevitable on the set. She did not want to use a double and hoped to perform her stunts personally. She believed that the team would purchase a lot of insurance for her. Aside from motorcycle, Chrissie also hoped to continue to study acting. How did she feel about her acting? She said, "Actually I don't dare to watch my own performance, I would feel embarrassed and get the shakes, but my friends feel that I have improved with every film. (Which movie of yours would you definitely never watch again?) I might as well not watch, I would save all my work to study from." In the future Chrissie would like to try a tragic character because others thought she was very tough. Actually she too wanted to be protected. Did she lack someone to protect her in real life? She said, "Occasionally! Earlier when we went to Thailand my boyfriend got sick, and I had to take care of him!" * (2012/02/29) Recent reports claimed that Vincent Zhao Wenzhou was upset at script changes and refused to work on the Donnie Yen Chi Tan produced and starred film DUT SHU SUN FUN (SPECIAL IDENTITY). The report also said that Yen Chi even called Zhao Wenzhou personally but did not receive any response, and Zhao Wenzhou refused to accept any work order. Yesterday Zhao Wenzhou's company issued a statement to the media to clarify the matter. Zhao Wenzhou was not upset at the DUT SHU SUN FUN team. Any script change would require actor agreement, which was written into the contract and was an industry rule. The statement also said that Zhao Wenzhou did not pack up and return to Beijing as reported but has always been on the Shenzhen set. The statement said that the report has not been confirmed with anyone on the team and was pure speculation. The report also mentioned that Zhao Wenzhou acted like a big shot with seven assistants. The statement said that Zhao Wenzhou did not have seven assistants around him and that this report has created negative impact on Zhao Wenzhou and asked the media to issue an apology and a correction. It would also reserve all rights to take legal action. * (2012/02/29) Zhang Yimou's favorite Dou Xiao yesterday with Best Actor Nick Cheung Ka Fai and Kay Tse On Kay attended the NIGHTFALL (DAI JUI BO) Beijing press conference. Dou Xiao in the film played the young Cheung Ka Fai. Dou Xiao said that although he was unable to work with the Best Actor, he was fortunate enough to promote the new film in Taiwan with Brother Ka Fai and he was very excited. Dou Xiao also felt that he was somewhat similar to Brother Ka Fai, "Of course we still have differences, he is an elder Best Actor!" As for the reason that he participated in NIGHTFALL, Dou Xiao revealed that actually the director "fell in love at first sight" with him. He said, "Director (Roy) Chow Hin Yeung once said to me, finding an actor who can play a young Brother Ka Fai is very hard in Hong Kong. The director felt that my eyes resembled his so in the end he chose me. This was also my first movie in Hong Kong. It was just three short days, for the movie I didn't even have a chance to return to the hotel and rest. I had my luggage with me the whole time and kept working throughout the night. Finally after the shoot I went directly to the airport and returned to Beijing." Cheung Ka Fai in order to better get into character before the shoot spent half a year to train and lose weight. Finally he got into shape that could rival Bruce Lee's. Yesterday at the press conference Cheung Ka Fai appeared in a black suit and his fit figure was on display. He revealed that he suffered a lot during the fitness and diet period for this shape. "During that period I only had steamed vegetables and chicken. Once I truly could not tolerate it and ran into a Japanese restaurant fora few pieces of sashimi to satisfy my appetite." However this was only physical pain, the most painful was becoming isolated on the set. Cheung Ka Fai complained, "In this film my character due to vocal cord damage couldn't speak. In order to get into the mood no one on the entire team spoke to me." Although this was the first time that Ka Fai played a mute, the challenge was not difficult for him at all. * (2012/02/29) The film THE ALLURE OF TEARS (KING SING JI LUEN) premiere took place two nights ago. Attending actors included Richie Jen (Yam Yin Chai), Gigi Leung Wing Kei, Aarif Rahman (Lee Chi Ting) and Lawrence Cheng Tan Shui and others. Three days ago was Lee Chi Ting's 25th birthday and the event celebrated with cake. During the event, an umbrella fell from above and the actors all jumped back in fright. Luckily no one was hurt. Later Siu Chai and Gigi were asked if they cross someone. Gigi joked that perhaps someone could not get Siu Chai's concert ticket. Siu Chai joked that Lady GaGa's tickets would be more like it. He said, "Whatever! Make it my fault then." However, Siu Chai hoped that everyone would pay attention to safety. No matter how bad everyone's mood was, no one should do this. He believed this was a prank. Gigi in the film had to learn to play the violin and took lessons with violinist Yao Jue, who came in support two nights ago. Gigi said that she only learned for a little more than a month, thus when she played a scene with the Shanghai symphony orchestra she became to feel guilty. Siu Chai joked of course, because they brought several million in musical instruments to rehearsal. They were all valuable collectibles, even the cheapest was 100,000 or so. Siu Chai said, "Once in the rain we rushed to cover the instruments, not people." Was Gigi interested in picking up the violin again? She said that she was not young anymore and truly had difficulty. Did she play for her husband? Gigi said yes, because neither knew how to play they thought it was very convincing. She pointed out that during the shoot, her husband came to Hong Kong and stayed with her at the hotel for three days to learn the violin. Siu Chai joked, "No wonder you didn't dine with us, with a face full of love!" Did Lee Chi Ting feel the umbrella was the act of a fan? He said that would be impossible because he has always been mild mannered and not violent. He believed that his fans would not do that. He said luckily no one was hurt. As for his birthday wish, Lee Chi Ting wished for world peace and a good Hong Kong. * (2012/02/28) The Wong Jing directed new film MR. AND MRS. GAMBLER (LAN DOH FU DAU LAN DOH CHAI) two nights ago held a celebration. The cast included Chapman To Man Jat, Fiona Sit Hoi Kei, Philip Ng Won Lung and director Wong Jing attended. Wong Jing became the dealer and watched the actors make their wagers, but they only played with prop chips. Sit Hoi Kei immediately took off her ring and said that she wanted to place a bet. Finally she won. Sit Hoi Kei said that the ring was worth HK$600 and wanted Wong Jing to pay up. Finally Wong Jing was forced to give HK$100 as reward. Sit Hoi Kei said that she did not like to gamble and revealed that the film had a good educational meaning. To Man Jat said that Sit Hoi Kei's performance was not as sexy and attractive as the LAN KWAI FONG (HEI OI YEH PO) actresses. Sit Hoi Kei said, "If the script requires it I would, but the intimate scene wasn't the focus. Please ask To Man Jat not to mind. Adding dirty elements into a comedy would only be for his own satisfaction." The film after ten days in release made HK$5 million, which was decent. Lead actor To Man Jat thanked the audience for the support. He said that last year he made eight movies in one breath. This year he would have many film scheduling clashes and competition with himself would be inevitable. To Man Jat said, "Investors said that the response to this movie was decent and would consider a sequel." * (2012/02/27) The Clarence Ford (Fok Yiu Leung) directed, Donnie Yen Chi Tan, Vincent Zhao Wenzhou and Zhang Hanyu starred film DUT SHU SUN FUN (SPECIAL IDENTITY) is heating up in production in Shenzhen. On the first day of the shoot Chi tan and Zhao Wenzhou originally had a scheduled fight scene but they only shot one scene. That day's scenes were still not completed when Zhao Wenzhou left the set with his seven assistants. Later the film company issued another work notice to him. He did not accept it and even ordered his management company to issue a legal action to the film company. If the script was not to his satisfaction, he will not continue to participate. Earlier he packed up his gear and returned to Beijing. As the producer, Yen Chi Tan tried to call Zhao Wenzhou in hopes of inviting him back to Shenzhen for a meeting. However Zhao did not agree to sit down with him for a discussion. Because they had many fight scenes, the film company could only halt production for a few days and hope that the situation will be resolved as soon as possible. Zhao Wenzhou initially took the Tan Bing directed ULTIMATE DECODING (JUNG GIK GAI MA), which later became the Fok Yiu Leung directed DUT SHU SUN FUN. The story and the characters were completely changed. Some said that his character was not as exciting as Chi Tan's character, which made him not too comfortable. Over a decade ago he was more popular than Chi Tan, but times have changed as now Chi Tan has already become the box office miracle drug and film company favorite. Because Zhao Wenzhou had a lot of opinions of the currently James Yuen Sai Sun written scripts, if the script could not return to the previously Tan Bing written version he will not continue to perform. The film company of course was upset at him and was planning to cast again. Actually aside from this incident, the film company had words about his work attitude earlier. According to workers on the set, Zhao Wenzhou acted like a big shot on the set. He had seven assistants, everyday he only worked nine hours that began when he left the hotel and included transportation times. His residence had to be the presidential suite at the Grand Hyatt Hotel. Wenzhou's manager Terence Chang Ka Chun said, "I am not too clear about this. Yesterday only after I received Chi Tan's call did I learn about Zhao Wenzhou's refusal to accept the work order. In a few days I will fly to Shenzhen and meet with Chi Tan to get an understanding of what was going on." Chi Tan said that the matter was being handled and had no comment. * (2012/02/27) Ann Hui On Wa received in a television interview revealed that for awhile she and Wong Jing were at odds. When Hui On Wa made SONG OF EXILE (HAT TOH CHAU HUNG), Wong Jing said, "Who would love to watch the story of a fat, old woman?" and made her very angry. She said, "At the time the outside was fanning the flame, many hoped to see us fight. When I was asked to respond I said, 'Wong Jing's filmmaking attitude is improper'. Then the headline was 'War Begins, Hui On Wa Announces She Wants To Beat Wong Jing'." Hui On Wa later due to a Wong Jing interview in which he said the Hong Kong directors who he admired the most were Hui on Wa and John Woo (Ng Yu Sum), which made her feel sorry and she did not say anything more. Over a year ago, Hui On Wa was looking for funding for her film THOSE ARE THE DAYS (TIN SHUI WAI DIK YUT YU YEH). After Wong Jing read it he immediately responded, which surprised and pleased her. * (2012/02/27) Miriam Yeung Chin Wa and Shawn Yue Man Lok yesterday promoted the film LOVE IN THE BUFF (CHUN GIU YU JI MING). Chin Wa and Ah Lok sat as they watched viewers play game. Real Ting Chi Ko did not appear. Reporters joked that Chin Wa could finally breathe freely, but Ah Lok cut in. "She is always sneaking out to breathe freely." Chin Wa explained, "Hubby is my mother in law, and it's not like the Hong Kong Coliseum with so many elevators." She revealed that she just snuck in some fries. Was she afraid that her husband would yell at her? Chin Wa said, "People like to be sneaky with food, it's human nature." Chin Wa looked prettier and chubbier, even Ah Lok said that she was much sharper. Chin Wa heard Ah Lok's compliment and immediately urged Ah Lok to get a wife soon. Actually Ah Lok asked Chin Wa to introduce girls to him, Chin Wa helplessly said, "I am pregnant now, matchmaking is inconvenient." What is Ah Lok looking for in a mate? He kept saying that he did not have any condition, but he kept nervously shaking his foot. Chin Wa joked that he was not this nervous even for bed scenes. Chin Wa believed that Ah Lok's condition was filial piety. Earlier when they worked in Beijing, Ah Lok's mother came to visit. She saw how attentive Ah Lok was to his mother. Ah Lok immediately said to Chin Wa, "Like you would be the best." Chin Wa replied, "Too bad you met me too late." Because Chin Wa's friends were around her age, would Ah Lok mind being with an older woman? He admitted, "I don't mind. Remember to spread around that I am a good site slashing prices for sale and like long hair." Did he want long legs? Ah Lok did not answer and changed the subject to praise Chin Wa as a mother in law killer, as she was able to chat nonstop with his mother. In this area she was very learned. Did Ah Lok chase girls normally? He joked, "At my age I can't move, I can't go to Central, not to mention four places in one night. It's not good getting called Uncle when I get there." * (2012/02/26) Mr. and Mrs. Donnie Yen Chi Tan two nights ago attended a cancer fund charity event. Currently working on a film in Shenzhen, Chi Tan deliberately returned to Hong Kong to attend with his wife Cissy Wang, but he looked scruffier and darker. He admitted that he recently has been working on a modern police film and slept for only two hours daily. Cissy revealed that Chi Tan's look scared their son so much that he did not dare to go near him, he even kept calling him "bad man". Luckily their daughter knew he was just making a movie. Cissy also revealed that recently she showed their son IP MAN, and their son said that he was "proud of Daddy". Did their son learn Wing Chun from Chi Tan in the film? Chi Tan said that he did not have to because his son already has his own fighting style. He also praised that his son had a knack for martial arts, but because he did not have time to instruct him Cissy has already enrolled their son in kung fu classes. * (2012/02/26) Wai Ying Hung yesterday appeared at the Hong Kong Film Archive to be a guest presenter of the East Side City short film contest. She revealed that short films and micro film creations are popular now in Hong Kong, the Mainland and Taiwan. She realized that the productions from the post 80 and the post 90 generations were great, earlier she worked on a ten minute short film in the Mainland and became interested. She would like to make a short film about her own life. However, about earlier online pranks about Chief Executive candidate Henry Tang Ying Yen Wai Ying Hung said, "You can't call it a prank, it's creative, depending on whether you accept it or not." * (2012/02/25) Andy Lau Tak Wa and Deanie Ip Tak Han earlier appeared on a Cable Entertainment News interview. The host congratulated Lau Tak Wa on his impending fatherhood. Wa Jai could not hide his excitement as he said, "I will try my best to welcome the new life and the new identity." In the future Wa Jai will reduce his workload to make more time to take care of his family. Sister Deanie said that she very much looked forward to "holding a grandchild". She even bet Lau Tak Wa that he definitely will be a father who will spoil the child. As for whether she would like a granddaughter or a grandson, Sister Deanie sai that the most important was for the child to be healthy. Speaking of initially investing in A SIMPLE LIFE (TOH JEH)'s production, Wa Jai said that at first he purely planned to invest to support Ann Hui On wa. Since BOAT PEOPLE (TAU BUN NO HOI) to now Hui On Wa singlehandedly created the current him. After reading the script, he already thought that they should ask Sister Deanie to play the title character but he did not make the suggestion in order not to hinder the director's decision. He never expected Hui On Wa to truly suggest Sister Deanie. When she did he offered to play Roger. He joked that at the time he pretended to be very "humble" and asked whether the director would mind if he played Roger. Lau Tak Wa also praised Sister Deanie as very hard work, very eager to learn and very focused on her work. For example when she wanted to learn to tap dance she just went and learned it. Yet she thought that now she still was not good enough. Earlier she enrolled in another class. However Sister Deanie humbly said that she was "a jack of all trades but a master at none." * (2012/02/25) Last night the scheming comedy SCHEME WITH ME (SEUNG SING GAI JUNG GAI)'s Richie Jen (Yam Yin Chai) and Jiu Kong attended a premiere. Many of Siu Chai's Hong Kong fans came in support. After the screening, Siu Chai and Jiu Kong even had intimate interaction with fans and even ran into the crowd for a photo. Yam Yin Chai in the film played a swindler Ghost Face whose expertise was disguises. Yam Yin Chai in the film also tried many different looks but he suffered for them. In the film her bucktooth look almost gave him cramps. Yam Yin Chai in the film suffered even more. "Not only is the location far away and sandy, a scene in which I was supposed to enjoy the scenery required me walking over several hills. It truly was tough. Thank you very much for your support." Always playing the gentleman in his past films, Yam Yin Chai this time played a very improper swindler. He joked, "I really am a swindler, I fooled everyone with my gentleman disguise. I am an actor, the loyal and honest roles were all fake. I really am a swindler, being childish is my actual nature." Current Central Ethnic Revue captain Tenggeer in this film was paired with Yvonne Yung Hung. Often in silence, Tenggeer's performance would make the audience explode with laughter. He too was curious. "In my life I am a very introverted person. I don't know why the performance is very funny. I myself don't know what's going on. During the performance, during the voice work, I was very nervous." * (2012/02/25) Chapman To Man Jat and Elanne Kong Yeuk Lam yesterday promoted their film LOVE LIFTING (GO GUI OI) in Mongkok and prepared heat pads for people. Ah Jat said that in recent months he had several film releases, MR. AND MRS. GAMBLER (LAN DOH FU YU LAN DOH CHAI), MARRYING MR. PERFECT (GA GOR YUT BAK FUN NAM YUN) and LOVE LIFTING. Luckily they were scheduled for different release dates as he did not want any "battle with himself". He admitted that a good market would make Hong Kong films thrive. With the recent Mr and Mrs. Henry Tang Ying Yen illegal construction controversy's poster fever his film had decent reaction. He said, "Thank you everyone for your support. This film has truly performed decently at the box office, which I feel more or less has to do with this. At least the incident put everyone in a bad mood, when they go to the movies they would watch comedy to relax. However of course I hope the film industry won't need too many similar incidents for support!" * (2012/02/24) The 36th Hong Kong International Film Festival yesterday officially announced Miriam Yeung Chin Wa as its ambassador again. She and Shawn Yue Man Lok starred in the Pang Ho Cheung directed new film LOVE IN THE BUFF (CHUN GIU YU JI MING) will be the opening film and the closing film will be the Berlin Film Festival Best Cinematography Silver Bear Prize winner WHITE DEER PLAIN. Director Peter Chan Ho Sun will be this year's Filmmaker in Focus. Chin Wa, Ah Lok and Pang Ho Cheung yesterday attended the press conference in Tsim Sha Tsui. Peter Lam Kin Ngok and Hong Kong International Film Festival Association chair Wong Ying Wai also attended. Chin Wa revealed that she was over six months pregnant and so far she has gained 16 to 17 pounds. Her husband Real Ting Chi Ko was no longer as "follow around hubby" but now she started to have sciatic nerve pain. Thus she had difficulty going out with friends. After attending tomorrow's event, the film opening ceremony and LOVE IN THE BUFF premiere she will officially rest. Since the LOVE production was very tough, she will persist no matter what. Chin Wa said that lately she has been watching movies at home. She did not have any taboo even with the kiss scene in LOVE IN THE BUFF because her child in the future will know her mother was an actor. Chin Wa said, "At most I would cover my legs if anything. I am even watching the television series THE HIPPOCRATIC CRUSH (ON CALL 36 SIU SI) and am reminded of when I was a nurse. It's pretty realistic, Ma Kwok Ming performs decently. Right now I am like a canary! (Have you pretend to roll around in bed?) I don't sleep well, on the left I crush my heart and on the right my hip hurts. The company doesn't dare to arrange too much work for me out of fear that I would doze off." Lok Jai joked that promoting with Chin Wa was rather stressful because he was very worried that she would constantly go to the bathroom, vomit from the pregnancy or even giving birth on the spot. Has Mr. Ting asked him to take care of her more? Lok Jai said that went without saying. He and the director would take care of her. Seeing Chin Wa overflowing with happiness, has he been tempting to start his own family? Lok Jai said, "No, who can be as happy as she is. I really want her to spare me some. She doesn't need peach blossom, every time you mention I sigh. When you use up all the peach blossom you wither. (Have you hidden any and not talk about it?) I haven't, I am thirty something, if I have I would talk about it." Lok Jai also said that he has not considered girls of other nationalities. He was very nervous about his mother communicating with her, so he would like to find someone who spoke the same language. If they had nothing to talk about it would be quite a bother, as he in the future would like to live with his family. * (2012/02/24) The star of Zhang Yimou's UNDER THE HAWTHORN TREE, Mou Guy Dou Xiao in the film NIGHTFALL (DAI JUI BO) worked for the first time with Janice Man Wing Shan, who was born in the same month of the same year as him, and played a couple. Although they just met, they were as intimate as a young couple. Dou Xiao even lay on Man Wing Shan's legs without any care and melted away in joy, much to the envy of others. They in the film developed a tragic love story. Although they met for the first time, they did their homework and saw the other's films in order to understand each other more. The intense shoot schedule was no match for them. Even in an ice cream scene, Dou Xiao even lay in JM's lap and enjoyed the tenderness. However off camera Dou Xiao could not be more embarrassed; because the director wanted them on the sun scorched roof to eat the melting ice cream while being romantic in the heat for two hours. They even had to wear heavy coats. The worst was the mischievous JM often dripped the melting sugar cone on his face. Dou Xiao however did not mind at all. JM described Dou Xiao as a big kid so she dripped the ice cream on his face with ease. She said, "Although we were only together for one day, we already had something in common. We talked about cars. He even liked the same brand and type of car as I do. After being born in the same month of the same year, we have another coincidence." * (2012/02/24) Today, the young director Pan Anzi directed film SCHEME WITH ME (SEUNG SING GAI JUNG GAI) promoted its upcoming film release in Shenzhen with Richie Jen (Yam Yin Chai) and Jiu Kong. At this event, Siu Chai responded to the Golden Bloom Award victory. "I really want to accept this award then collapse. At the same time though, I feel, the 'honor' clearly tells me how high everyone's expectation of me has been. I am very sorry that so many previous films were just cameos, due to some external conditions and reasons my performance really was poor." Siu Chai said that he put some effort into film and would like to produce or direct. He said that he has already begun to ask screenwriters to write two scripts, a mob movie that expresses the human nature's helpless struggle and another a modern romantic comedy about Penghu Bay. Siu Chai told reporters that he has high expectation for SCEHME WITH ME. In this film he has already learned a lesson about past cameo performance. This was the first film that he participated from the beginning to the end as he wanted to break through the title of "king of rotten films". Siu Chai told reporters that during the shoot he and Tenggeer kept discussing script changes with the director and the screenwriters. He was very happy and also put down a foundation for his future as a director. Siu Chai said that he did not want his child to see his nude scene in the film. Yet he could only tell him, "This is a necessity for Papa's job, I hope you can understand." * (2012/02/24) Winning numerous awards before its official Hong Kong release, the film A SIMPLE LIFE (TOH JEH) is catapulted into fame. Finally in early March A SIMPLE LIFE will be officially released in Hong Kong. Investor and actor Andy Lau Tak Wa earlier with this film spoke with the media with this film's Venice Best Actress Deanie Ip Tak Han. Wa Jai hoped that the film will perform well in Hong Kong, then he would not have to lose his own salary. On the day of the interview, Sister Deanie had the flu and sounded a little hoarse. During the interview Sister Deanie sat far away and even covered her nose with her hand as she was afraid of infecting Wa Jai. She pointed out that Wa Jai could not be sick now because he had a pregnant woman at home. Speaking of film box office expectation, Sister Deanie said, "Hopefully it will be good, I hope Wa Jai won't lose too much. Earlier Wa Jai has said that it would lose 2 million." Wa Jai said that now it probably would not. Deanie said, "Now it should lose 1 million." Wa Jai said that it would mainly depend on the Hong Kong box office, even if he had to lose he would lose his own salary. He joked, "It's very little, 1 or 2 million." Yet he felt that this was a movie that could benefit him for a lifetime. Like MADE IN HONG KONG and THE LONGEST SUMMER (HUI NIN YIN FA DUT BIT DOR), they are making 80,000 to 100,00 back annually. Every film after being sold for eight years would have new royalty. A good movie would have different royalties. Speaking of A SIMPLE LIFE's earlier international success but was not released until so much later, was he afraid of the box office effect? Wa Jai explained that he wanted to find a good release date, but because this was an art film cinemas generally did not want to screen it during major slots. Now its early March release with the film awards he thought it was good timing. Would this film participate in other film festivals? Wa Jai said that it will participate in the Hong Kong Film Awards, but some film festivals had to choose it too. Will he work with Ann Hui On Wa again? He pointed out that she is now working on another script but will work with other companies. As for making another art film, he said that he will if someone asks him. He was passive but did not have too much abilities. He could only make one or two years. Will Sister Deanie make Wa Jai's movies first? She said no, the character and the script had to be right for her first. Did she receive more script offers after winning an award? She said, "One or two more! (Did you get a raise?) 1 or 2 bucks more!" * (2012/02/23) Guo Shu-Yao will invade the big screen and work in the film WHEN A WOLF FALLS IN LOVE WITH A SHEEP with YOU ARE THE APPLE OF MY EYE's rising Taiwan star Ko Chen-Tung and new Taiwan actress Jian Man-Shu. Guo Shu-Yao in the film will play a happy, helpful and hard working ace tutor. Everyday her greatest joy is working hard and increase her savings account. Guo Shu-Yao says, "This completely is a reflection of my life! Maybe because of my family, since little I never have a sense of financial security. I am exactly like this character!" She also reveals that the director tailors this character for her after her chat with the director, thus she is 100% confident about bringing this character to life. She also hopes that everyone will like it. This film is Guo Shu-Yao's first film. She admits that the pressure is enormous because her co-star is Ko Chen-Tung whose first film performed well at the box office. She reveals that when her friends learn that she will work with Ko Chen-Tung they are envious and keep asking, "When can we visit the set?" In order to perform well in the film, Guo Shu-Yao has done a lot of homework. During her break she has watched many movies. She also hopes that after the production starts her performance will not disappoint the director. [ BLAH OF THE WEEK ] Columns, Reviews, Interviews . APPLE DAILY, FEBRUARY 25 2012, ELECTRIC FILM ROAD DOZE NIU COOKS UP CROSS OVER LOVE WAR Again about YOU ARE THE APPLE OF MY EYE, with its success Taiwan films follow one after another to Hong Kong. The latest release LOVE continues to talk about love, a grand view of love that includes love story of the old, middle age and young generations, gathers artists from both sides of the straits, develops cross border Mainland Taiwan romance, love triangle that involves friendship......as for the Taiwan film's revival after years of silence, director Niu Chen-Zer said that Taiwan film never died. This time the co-production elements have already added new energy to strong Taiwan films. The Shu Qi, vicki Zhao Wei, Mark Chao (Chiu Yau Ting) and other China and Taiwan stars starred LOVE is a rare China Taiwan co-production film. Before the script went into production it had to be submit for Mainland inspection. Director Niu Chen-Zer said that he chose co-productions in hopes of bringing new stimulating elements to Taiwan films. He said, "Co-production films can still have creativity and be creative, I would never subjugate myself to that. This time I didn't submit at all. The script required very few changes." Director Under Hong Kong Film Influence The fact is instead of calling LOVE co-production film you might as well as say it resembles a Hong Kong film more, which more or less is related to Hong Kong films' influence on the director when he was little. Years ago he even had a memorable Hong Kong girlfriend, which added to his love for Hong Kong. His previous film MONGA was referred to as a YOUNG AND DANGEROUS (GOO WAT JAI) extension. Niu Chen-Zer years ago in the Tony Leung Ka Fai and Andy Lau Tak Wa starred Hong Kong film THE ISLAND OF GREED (HAK GUM) played an investigator. In it an interrogation scene with cola made him realize how serious Hong Kong film productions were. He said, "That scene took over 20 takes and used real cola. Later for a long time I didn't want to drink cola. At the time I thought was such realism necessary. Later I saw the video then I realized that real was great." What was attractive about Hong Kong film became Niu Chen-Zer's future filmmaking guidance as well as his research target. Appreciates Giddens Ko's Storytelling As for YOU ARE THE APPLE OF MY EYE, the Taiwan film that has broken all Hong Kong records recently, Niu Chen-Zer said, "I know that some directors said this film's director Giddens Ko was inexperienced, didn't handle some areas well, and it wasn't a great film. However I feel he made it with a lot of sincerity. He is a storytelling expert who indeed brings back our memories of those years. He can make us cry and laugh, and everyone has a Shen Chia-Yi relationship. So how can it not be entertaining?" Niu Chen-Zer even reveals that earlier he had a similar idea. He continues, "Five years ago I would have said 'fudge', now I want you and everyone to do well since we are all Chinese films. We have so many stories and subjects that we can make anyway." Market Expands, Taiwan Film Is Not Dead LOVE is a romantic film about the old, the middle age and the young. Now 45 years ago Niu Chen-Zer says that much of the content is borrowed. He says, "Of course I have been young too and have many of my own experience and feeling. In addition I had help from a female screenwriter. The Beijing part was a Mainland screenwriter's responsibility, because I needed his help with a lot of the local dialect to have that feel. Of course I am not a rich tycoon. In the film the tycoon love life is borrowed from a rich friend." The story can be borrowed but luxury yachts and private jets he did not borrow at the same time for bright spots because he did not have the Chief Executive identity. The mansion in the film was the only decoration in the film. In recent years Taiwan film is on a rebounding trend locally, first came CAPE NO. 7, MONGA then recently YOU ARE THE APPLE OF MY EYE. Niu Chen-Zer said, "Taiwan film has never died. As the engine of the entertainment business train, film has no reason to die. We have good directors like Hou Hsiao-Hsien who makes very deeply emotional films. Our advantage over Hollywood films is having a common language and culture with the local audience, the closer emotions enables us to cry and laugh with them. Staring perhaps around two years ago, Taiwan film genres branched out and attracted viewers. Taiwan film probably found its way out again. With the current Greater Chinese market, film professionals have even more potential." Mark Chao Is In A Hurry To Be A Father Chiu Yau Ting from MONGA to now LOVE has asked a lot of himself. He always wants every movie to be adjusted to its best shape. He says, "Yet the result is not as I have imagined, sometimes if I am too optimistic. This script provided me with a lot of clues to complete this character. The character in the film has a lot of money, doesn't believe in love, he lacks love from his family. In some confined spaces he seems to have OCD, which makes the character more likable." Romance Like Comedy Full of fantasy about love in real life, Chiu Yau Ting says, "I believe love can bring me a lot of energy and vitality, but I am still learning. One experience after another makes me a little more mature." In LOVE he is paired with Mainland actress Zhao Wei and even has many funny romantic scenes. The kiss scene alone puts comedy in the romantic environment, as he and Zhao Wei just kept on laughing. Fans who think Chiu Yau Ting is a romantic love would be wrong. He says, "The character is not trying to be romantic only practical. I myself too am not about the superficial but the practical. My view on love is very different from the character's, but we also have our similarities. Like the sense of pride and superiority, I realized I had them too. I understood him so I recognized some of them radiating from me." Passing On From Generation To Generation Chiu Yau Ting believes that in the future he will be a good father. At 27 he has always thought that he will be a father after 30. Family and children to him are very important, this idea is passed on from his ancestors generation to generation. Chiu Yau Ting also has the traditional man's quality that does not match with his playboy exterior. He says, "No system is perfect, but I will make improvements in response. Since my father has taught me that, I will continue the same educational method." Synopsis: The Old, The Middle Age, The Young Love Nonstop Yi-Chia is a bicycle team co-captain. She is unexpectedly pregnant and the one responsible is her good friend rich girl Lu Hsiao-Ni's boyfriend A Kai. Hsiao-Ni's father Lu Ping is a rich tycoon in the city. His road of love is not smooth either. As he thinks his relationship with socialite Jou-I is stable enough for them to walk down the aisle, a "stuttering otaku" Hsiao-Kuan shows up. Lu Ping's business partner Mark is a playboy who never truly falls in love with any woman, yet in Beijing he runs into a woman Xiaoye who dares to love and hate and has a five year old son in Beijing. With love stories of the old, the middle age and the young, the film displays modern society's romantic relationships in all its flavors. Post Script: After the interview Niu Chen-Zer curiously asks the reporter, "Why aren't your questions 'Apple' at all, 'Apple' questions should be all about rumors, dirty deeds, you didn't ask." The overt statement naturally is film interview obviously be about the film's transformations, the subtext is, "Your romantic film doesn't have to have bed scenes, save the rumors for the premiere." - HO WING NING 2. MING PAO DAILY, FEBRUARY 25 2012, FILM WORDS TAIWAN FILM VARIES INTO ROMANCE Taiwan film is on the rise, passing the tragic and dull art stage it no longer just seek international awards and ignore the market. From CAPE NO. 7 to YOU ARE THE APPLE OF MY EYE box office miracles have been created. Of course everyone has an opinion on whether these hit films are truly entertaining, what is important is the focus on entertainment mainstream again and attract a new generation of viewers. The Doze Niu Chen-Zer directed MONGA is the Taiwan version YOUNG AND DANGEROUS (GOO WAT JAI), which was very lively. His new film LOVE is a modern romantic ensemble film that crosses the strait and as well as two generations. Fortunately it is conventional without being vulgar. The opening long single shot is colorful. Rich and accurate with a sense of film, the technique is not simple at all. Strong Sense of Life, Interesting Characters This film wonderfully weaves together relationships of eight people. Eddie Peng Yu-yen, Ivy Chen, Amber Kuo's young love triangle cooks up a difficult situation of good friends turned romantic rivals. Even the affair and the pregnancy have pleasant surprises; big boss Niu Chen-Zer, elegant mistress Shu Qi and stuttering kid Ethan Juan (Yuen King Tin) form another love triangle that has rare romance; rich and handsome heir Mark Chao (Chiu Yau Ting) and Beijing little woman Vicki Zhao Wei become happy rivals who are wonderful as well. The ideas inevitably are contrived, but the details are lively and agile. Whether the rich or the streets they all have a sense of life. Each character has a thoroughly interesting performance. The only problem is that all the Taiwan men in the film are described as loving and loyal, rich Taiwan men are even the rarest of romantics. Are they truly so ideal? (Three out of five stars) - SHEK KEI 3. TA KUNG PAO, FEBRUARY 25 2012, LIGHT SHADOW PATH DO NOT WASTE TIME WITH FILM INDUSTRY ASSISTANCE Vice Chair Xi Jinping on his U.S. visit announced that the China film market will open further and increase IMAX or 3D film imports to 14 and in turn Hollywood movie imports to 34. It is good news to viewers, but the industry has some different opinions. Among the 13 billion film box office last year 46% came from import films. The year's highest grossing Chinese film THE FLOWERS OF WAR on the overall box office only came in fourth. The top three were Hollywood films TRANSFORMERS DARK OF THE MOON, KUNG FU PANDA 2 and PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN ON STRANGER TIDES, which demonstrate in terms of big entertainment film productions Chinese films still have a lot of room for improvement. Some felt that further opening up the Mainland market would bring pressure to Chinese film professionals, as import films "erode" viewers, schedules and box office the future will be bleak. Yet some also felt that opening up the market would be the best way to cultivate film viewers, and more viewers would benefit everyone. Actually the most important are still creativity and quality. If we just keep on making wu xia films, police films and do not grasp the pulse of the times, we can just watch as LOVE IS NOT BLIND or YOU ARE THE APPLE OF MY EYE become the beacon of light in the Mainland, Hong Kong and Taiwan. The issue of creativity is even more severe in the Hong Kong film industry, the "aging" of Hong Kong film professionals and the generation gap are indisputable facts. For 30 years the off camera personnel has not changed much. In terms of biological age or product style, the "aging" phenomenon cannot be denied. How to cultivate new film professionals is always the most important subject in film industry assistance, unfortunately the Mainland and Hong Kong have no special departments to help new director's projects. The Hong Kong Film Development Fund so far still has no project that targets new directors. Projects to have experienced film professionals as producers or return on investment guarantees of course do not count. Because this type of operation methods is no different from commercial operations, they do not start from helping the film industry. Recently a director pointed out in an interview that the Hong Kong film industry assistant policy has the wrong "focus". Two years ago it wanted to turn Hong Kong into Asia's 3D film center in hopes of creating a way out for the Hong Kong film industry. The director said, "Among Hong Kong directors, only very few have made 3D films and they don't know how to make them either. They see the success of others and copy them exactly." Helping film is not about the latest and the most technologically advanced, it is about cultivating talent. The earlier released 3D wu xia film took a year to make and cost a lot, yet in Hong Kong it was not popular. As for last year's 3D erotic film, it was a hit because of sex and not 3D. The director even said, "The government in the past due to one or two art films successfully winning awards on the international stage encourages us to make art films. These ideas and the actual conditions are very different." What is the difference? It is the market, if the market is ignored the market in the end will abandon you. How would you help the industry then? - TIN LIK 4. TA KUNG PAO, FEBRUARY 25 2012, FILM AND TELEVISION TRAVERSAL LOVE PROJECTS MODERN VIEW ON ROMANCE Whether in movies new or old, love is a hot topic that has definite supporters. As the times change, interpretations are different. With different ethnic style and director treatments, it becomes even more colorful. With film and television talent from both sides of the strait, LOVE can be said as a display of modern love story. Eight actors stitch together three intricate relationships, with Shu Qi who first is under the care of Doze Niu Chen-Zer then set off love spark with young restaurant owner Ethan Juan (Yuen King Tin), Siu Tin's younger sister Ivy Chen falls for good friend Amber Kuo's boyfriend Eddie Peng and even secretly has his child; in addition, the careless Beijing property agent Vicki Zhao Wei and Taiwan rich kid Mark Chao (Chiu Yau Ting) get to know each other better over misunderstandings. The three relationships in LOVE although seem to have happy endings, under its director and actor Niu Chen-Zer's treatment it has a helpless and tragic flavor. He deliberately uses some light and fast music to ease the conflicts and struggles in the film, which instead provides us even larger space to think; he seems to place the almost fantasy style innocent love into the complicated modern relationships between the sexes. Due to differences from age, culture and profession, adding in the monetary benefits and modern morality concepts, as well as the intricate relationships between both sides of the strait, we are shown that modern people's cheerful exterior but lonely interior; due to a lack of sense of security they do not have the courage to bare responsibility, but they seem to be even more casual and open about sex; and that type egoistical exterior but self pitying interior of modern people (yet thinking that they have full of self confidence) is contradictory. Yet in these three relationships, the one with the three young people is actually the more fragile and confused. The love between friends and the sexes are unclear, which conceptually is actually along the same vain as the relationship of the trio in the Spanish film PAPER CASTLES. The act between Zhao Wei and Chiu Yau Ting is more outstanding because it has no connection to the two previous acts (aside from Chiu Yau Ting and Shu Qi's ambiguous relationship). They both belong to single parent families and find each other to fill the part that the other part. Thus they in accordance set off spark. This is very similar to the situation that Vic Chou Yu Man faced in an earlier film NEW PERFECT TWO and is also commonplace with young modern family. - CHUI HIU [ In Production Now/Soon ] NATURAL BORN LOVERS Can : Tin Sun Oi Ching Kong Lit : Natural Born Love Maniac d. Not every love story is a fairy tale. After a dramatic wedding feast, unusual love stories unfold towards unexpected endings: a brother and sister in love caught by the mother, a married painter falls for his young life drawing model of same sex, an intimacy between a dance school teacher and his wealthy but senior student, a lesbian couple of which one has role-play paranoid, a dreadful love triangle ending with the girl being beheaded… "Love Actually…Sucks!" celebrates love that no one care but real, for life is love, love as it is. [ PHILADELPHIA QFEST ] Taking inspiration from six different court cases involving crimes of the heart, Scud examines the intense, often self-destructive sexual longings among several well-to-do young Hong Kong residents – gay, lesbian and straight. The film opens with the most scandalous wedding reception ever put on film: a young couple’s marriage ends (in the most dramatic fashion) before it begins. There is the 30-ish married gym instructor who trolls the active bathroom scene for young flesh; a lesbian couple with roleplay issues; a dance instructor who becomes the object of attraction to his much older student; a married painter who falls for his male model; a brother and sister who take family togetherness a bit too literally; and a young man who becomes increasingly deranged until he takes his love interest problems into his own hands. In Scud’s world, every love story is a fairy tale – but here the stories are sexual and troubling. Overall, a complex, sensual and compelling film. Ever since Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire sang “It’s a Fine Romance” in 1936’s Swing Time, movies have been bowing down to the power of love. Unfortunately, Hollywood just doesn’t make romantic comedies the way they used to and these days if you’re looking for love in an American movie, you’re looking for it in all the wrong places. Thank Aphrodite for Korea. Ever since My Sassy Girl broke box office records in 2001, the Korean film industry has been making some of the funniest, most outrageously swoony movie romances, and for this series we’ve picked three of the best. Tuesday, APRIL 10, 2012 @ 7pm PETTY ROMANCE (2010, 118 minutes) A word-of-mouth hit in 2010, this romance is set in the world of manhwa (Korean comic books), and the couple at the center of the story have chemistry to burn. TV star Lee Seon-Gyun is a struggling manhwa artist who enters a competition with a massive cash prize. To raise his chances of winning, he hires a sex advice columnist, Choi Gang-Heui (star of the breakout hit, My Scary Girl), to write his erotic comic. Little does he know that she plagiarized her column from the Kama Sutra and the Kinsey Report because her ideas about sex are a bit…vague, to put it kindly. PETTY ROMANCE been winning hearts and minds on the film festival circuit for a year and it’s a guaranteed crowd pleaser. Tuesday, March 27, 2012 @ 7pm MY GIRLFRIEND IS AN AGENT (2009, 112 minutes) Opening at number one, and staying in the box office top ten for nine straight weeks, MY GIRLFRIEND IS AN AGENT is the Korean version of Mr. and Mrs. Smith. Kim Ha-Neul gets dumped by her boyfriend, Kang Ji-Hwan, because she’s never around. Actually, she’s a spy. Three years later, he runs into her again, only now he’s also joined the intelligence service too, albeit in a different department. Now they both have undercover identities they both have to keep hidden and they’ve got secret missions they both have to fulfill, while working out the trauma of their past relationship. Full of high-speed chases and plenty of glossy gunplay, it’s easy to see why a movie this fast on its feet is already slated for a Bollywood remake. Tuesday, March 13, 2012 @ 7pm CYRANO AGENCY (2010, 117 minutes) The biggest romantic hit of 2010 (grossing only slightly less than Harry Potter and the Proper Noun: Part 1) this big budget romantic comedy won “Best Screenplay” and its star, Lee Min-Jung (Boys Over Flowers) won a truckload of “Best New Actress” awards. Full of irreconcilable differences, beautiful stars and ridiculous, laugh-out-loud plot twists, it’s all about the Cyrano Agency, a matchmaking service that sets up elaborate, Mission Impossible-style scenarios to help their clients win the man (or woman) of their dreams. Now, their 100% success rate is in danger because a sad sack hedge fund manager wants to date a free spirited gal who just happens to be the head of the Cyrano Agency’s ex.
