The script won't be out for two days, but I am worried I will have to. So I will have to prepare to be in my best shape!" Lee Lik Chi said that young people nowadays love to shoot with mobile phones. Like the earlier Taiwan film YOU ARE THE APPLE OF MY EYE that was a breath of fresh air to everyone's eyes and ears, everyone can try to work with more new comers. Ultimately now it is the high definition era, everyone like to watch the younger generation in performance. Lee Lik Chi also hoped that the future chief executive will be able to put more effort into Hong Kong domestic films. As for his choice for Chief Executive, Lee Lik Chi joked, "Now the Chief Executive not only has to be smart, everyone are seemingly concerned with honesty. Thus you are better off not making any mistake normally. You don't know when you will run for the Chief Executive. You don't know about all the bad things that you've done before." Then he said that ultimately people should not make mistakes. Speaking of director James Yuen Sai Sun earlier having his screenplay hijacked by a Mainland company, Lee Lik Chi revealed that in the Mainland that was the norm. Once he attended a production start ceremony as a guest, when the series was aired in Guangxi he suddenly became the series producer. Actually everyone are only doing their jobs, he hoped to stop similar plots from occurring again. Lee Lik Chi said, "I know in Hong Kong and the U.S. you can get copyright for a screenplay, but it's a little harder in the Mainland. I often would give a photocopy to the other party. Even email has certain risks. Take care at every turn." Lee Lik Chi said that he was not certain about Yuen Sai Sun's situation and asked reporters to ask him instead. The Clement Cheng Si Kit directed MERRY GO ROUND (DUNG FUNG POR)'s leads Teddy Robin Kwan and Ella Koon Yun Na winning the Golden Koala International Chinese Film Festival Best Actor and Best Actress. Cheng Si Kit looked forward to when everyone would have time to celebrate. He was very happy as well as he praised the winners as great actors. He hoped to have a chance to work with them again. * (2012/02/21) The Andy Lau Tak Wa, Zhang Jingchu, Lin Chiling, Tong Dawei starred treasure hunt film DWELLING IN THE FUCHUN MOUNTAINS yesterday shot its final indoor scene at the China National Museum. Lin Chiling said, "Overall character relationships are all complicated and complex, hard to describe in a few words. Being able to work with Brother Wa is our honor. From Brother Wa we saw what we should learn from him. He has everyone's respect for being very serious at every shot." Zhang Jingchu praised everyone's professionalism. From Brother Wa she learned a lot about action scenes. Lin Chiling was so ill while shooting in Dubai that she could not speak, but she still had no complaint. Tong Dawei felt that Wa Jai's high emotional quotient was the most amazing. "We were very tired from the shoot and worked very long hours, but Brother Wa was able to remain serious for every shot. Like last night the fight scenes were shot first, then when we shot the dramatic scenes everyone was very tired, but he during the shoot still put his best condition in front of the camera. Everyone has moods and would be somewhat frustrated, but not Brother Wa." * (2012/02/21) Elanne Kong Yeuk Lam yesterday revealed on a radio interview that she just returned from promoting her film THE WEDDING DIARY in Malaysia and Singapore. He immediately took a flight to leave Hong Kong as he did not dare to face this box office. Luckily Yuen Kwai called to encourage him. Later the box office gradually rose and had a 160 some day run to become the longest running Hong Kong film release. Lau Chun Wai said, "That feeling is like Heaven is playing with me!" Lau Chun Wai said that among his numerous work, the most memorable should be SAVIOR OF THE SOUL (91 SUN DIU HUP NUI) because at the time his parents passed away within a month of each other. He remembered when he received the call that day, Anita Mui Yim Fong was still sitting next to him and asked why he looked so surprised. When she learned she told him not to start the shoot, then Lau Chun Wai also called Andy Lau Tak Wa to explain. Yet at night he still returned to the set and shot a scene that cracked up the late night preview audience. Lau Chun Wai helplessly said, "The whole feeling is pretty dumb, with such a mood I could actually make such a scene." Lau Chun Wai said that in the middle of the year he will officially shoot his new film. It will mainly be a comedy. The cast and the location have not been decided yet. * (2012/02/20) The action suspense NIGHTFALL (DAI JUI BO) yesterday held a press conference in Beijing. Director Roy Chow Hin Yeung and actors Simon Yam Tat Wa and Janice Man Wing Shan attended. At the event Yam Tat Wa appeared as Sherlock Holmes in representation of the team to unveil the final poster and issued a "national most wanted list" to announce the Operation Nick Cheung Ka Fai manhunt has officially begun. In the film Cheung Ka Fai's character was similar to the culprit of a Nanjing murder robbery. Wa Jai suggested for the film company to donate some of the box office proceed to reward the front line uniform police. Brother Wa revealed that the fight scene in the Ngong Ping 360 Cable Car challenged his own fear. He had a fear of heights. This Cable Car's bottom was all glass. Since he was able to directly see the ground inside the car he was less than comfortable. During this scene he truly was afraid. This scene also had many fight stunts that made him a little dizzy. Finally he needed medicinal ointment. Wa Jai pointed out that he insisted on personally performing, thus everyday he was vomiting. Finally after a dozen days or so he was used to it. He won over Ka Fai who played the murderer and still was very excited about the shoot. However as soon as he saw the car was still several dozen meters above ground he was already a little dizzy. Brother Wa also admired Ka Fai's professionalism and endurance. He knew Ka Fai took the initiative to contact a fitness coach for this film and conducted a half a year long hellish training. Man Wing Shan who worked with two Best Actors for the first time said that this chance was rare, so she put a lot of effort into the preparation. She spent three months to "experience life". During that period she would deliberately keep a distance from friends, then spend time on piano practices, read a variety of books, lock herself in a room alone to gradually submerge into her film character. Her initiative touched the director very much. * (2012/02/20) Hong Kong director James Yuen Sai Sun a year ago in Beijing through Bruce Law Lai Yin met Taiwan film producer Allen Tan, who under the guise of planning a film production asked him about his projects. Yuen proceeded to provide his original screenplay GA FUNG JUNG WONG (FAKE AND REAL PHOENIX) for him to browse. Later Yuen left Beijing and returned to Hong Kong and Tan did not contact him further about this project. In early June last year, Yuen Sai Sun from a third party and workers of the production learned that the just completed film, the Cecilia Cheung Pak Chi and Kang Sang-Woo starred film REPEAT, I LOVE YOU (YING JI OI YUN) was the story that Yuen Sai Sun participated in and wrote. Pak Chi's character personality, encounters, story and name in the film were identical to GA FUNG JUNG WONG's, the main plot line was the same as well; the film's producer was Allen Tan. Yuen Sai Sun said that Tan without his permission and authorization turned GA FUNG JUNG WONG into REPEAT, I LOVE YOU. Yuen Sai Sun through his manager Ho Kam Wah made inquiries with REPEAT, I LOVE YOU producer Stanley Kwan Kam Peng, who admitted that in as early as December 2012, the story that Allen Tan showed Kwan Kam Peng was the Yuen Sai Sun signed and written GA FUNG JUNG WON original story. Kwan Kam Peng asked Allen Tan to properly handle Yuen Sai Sun's copyright issues but Allen Tan did not. In July last year, through Kwan Kam Peng's mediation, Ho Kam Wah met with Allen Tan in Beijing. Tan admitted stealing GA FUNG JUNG WONG's ideas and characters to make REPEAT, I LOVE YOU. Because the "rice was already cooked", both parties agreed to "after the fact reparation" to sell GA FUNG JUNG WONG's copyright to Allen Tan and his company for 200,000 yuan RMB. Yuen Sai Sun said that he helplessly sold his effort and "son". Yet until the end of last year, Tan has been dragged his feet and said that the REPEAT, I LOVE YOU release company and investor China Film Group and DMG Entertainment Media Group refused to buy the copyright. Yuen Sai Sun pointed out that originally he wanted to cover up the crime of theft in a "peaceful" manner, but at this point he had to "announce it to the world". Yuen Sai Sun said that Tan's behavior was "robbery" and "literature theft", such copyright violations invited contempt. He also said that this incident sent chills to his heart as he sensed its lack of legality, morality and copyright protection. Yuen Sai Sun now reserved all legal action rights against the film REPEAT, I LOVE YOU's original copyright violation. He also believed that the Hong Kong Film Workers Union, Hong Kong Directors' Guild, Hong Kong Screenwriter Association would provide assistance in hopes of obtaining justice for him. * (2012/02/19) Director Yonfan restored his 1995 film BUGIS STREET (YIU GAI WONG HAU) and at the invitation of the Berlin Film Festival competed f or this year's Teddy Bear award. On the day of the winner announcement the event disqualified BUGIS from the competition. Yonfan said, "This time I benefited a lot from coming to Berlin. I won't blame the event." * (2012/02/19) Cecilia Cheung Pak Chi's new film is suspected of "stealing ideas" and made director and screen writer James Yuen Sai Sun angry. "When idea stealing is so blatantly, how can I trust anyone in the future?" With over 20 years in film, Yuen Sai Sun ran into such an incident for the first time. Finally his nightmare of the past few years began. The incident even involved news queen Cheung Pak Chi! Earlier Pak Chi and Korean actor Kang Sang-Woo starred in a romance that was suspected of coming from Director Yuen's hands. Unfortunately in the end the script was pirated. Director Yuen not only did not have any fame or fortune but also received a belly full of rage in return. Yuen Sai Sun said, "In 201o I met a film professional named Tan in the Mainland. He said that he found a boss for me so I could direct my own screenplay GA FUNG JUNG WONG (FAKE AND REAL PHOENIX). After several months someone called me and told me that the film has already changed its title and begun production. The director was (Calvin) Poon Yuen Leung, the producer was (Stanley) Kwan Kam Peng. I called Ah Kwan. He said at first when he spoke with the company at first he already realized that the screenplay came from my hands. He even asked the film company to clarify the copyright with me first." Finally that Tan film professional signed a contract to make compensations with Director Yuen, but dragged on for seven to eight months. Later he replied that the film company refused to make financial compensations!" He also revealed that "Today is the deadline that I gave them. Actually I no longer think about getting anything back. I have always hoped to settle it peacefully. Now I am publicizing it only because I wanted justice for myself. Over these few months I have been angry more than everything else. After so many years in the business I have never encountered anything similar. With such blatantly disrespect for intellectual property rights, how can we work together in the future?" Director Yuen stated that he will reserve the right to take legal action and issued an individual statement. * (2012/02/19) The Tsui Hark directed 3D wuxia film FLYING SWORDS OF DRAGON GATE (LUNG MOON FEI GAP) two nights ago appeared in Berlin. Speaking of Denise Ho Wan Si and Eason Chan Yik Shun reprising Anita Mui Yim Fong and Gor Gor's PEERLESS ELEGANCE kiss, Mo Mo did not see it. Two nights ago she went to Ah Si's play AWAKENING, one of the supporting players joked that she wanted a kiss with Ah Si. * (2012/02/16) Two days ago a series of explosions took place in Thailand. Aaron Kwok Fu Sing and Nick Cheung Ka Fai actually earlier secretly arrived there for a new film's costume fitting. The film's director Oxide Pang Shun was shocked to hear the news. If the situation deteriorated he would rather pull the entire team back. Sing Sing's rumored girlfriend Lynn Xiong (Hung Doi Lam) admitted that she and Sing Sing talked over the phone and learned that he was fine. Two Best Actors Kwok Fu Sing and Cheung Ka Fai earlier secretly went to Bangkok, Thailand for Pang Shun's new film costume film and promotional short film shoot. Due to the series of explosions in Bangkok, reporters contacted director Pang Shun who was in Thailand. He admitted that he did not find out about the explosions until he heard from the reporters. He too was very worried about Sing Sing and Ka Fai's safety and would pay close attention to the news. Director Pang Shun said that originally they planned to stay in Thailand and rest for awhile after completing the shoot, then they would fly to Malaysia. Now they would try to finish the preparation as soon as possible then return to Hong Kong. Yesterday the news indicated that the explosion was targeting Israeli diplomats. Would Pang Shun shoot near the Israeli embassy? He said that he would never take the risk and go to anywhere political sensitive. However because the Israeli embassy was in the city center, he was worried. If the situation deteriorated he would cancel the Thailand shoot, withdraw completely and return to Hong Kong. * (2012/02/16) Chapman To Man Jat in the new film MR. AND MRS. GAMBLER (LAN DOH FU DAU LAN DOH CHAI) not only dressed up as THE GRANDMASTERS (YUT DOI JUNG SI)'s Tony Leung Chiu Wai but also Zhang Ziyi. In the film To Man Jat put on a high cut dress and performed kung fu. Although he looked the part his thick and hairy leg was also on display. He said, "Impersonating Leung Chiu Wai is easier than impersonating Zhang Ziyi because I am not too close with Zhang Ziyi." He also said that the shoot had fake snow. His mouth was open the entire time and thus he ate a lot of fake snow. In the film Wong Jing's "Jing Girl" Hu Ran appeared in a bikini. To Man Jat also showed off his fat during the performance. How would To Man Jat rate Hu Ran? He said, "She has a lot of potential. (You are lucky!) This is the benefit of working on a Wong Jing film." * (2012/02/16) Nick Cheung Ka Fai in order to make the film NIGHTFALL (DAI JUI BO) spent half a year on physical training. In the film he and prisoner Ken Low Wai Kwong had many fight scenes. Before the shoot, Ka Fai in order to look better brought fitness equipment to pump up his muscles. He also lifted weights, performed push ups to appear in his best shape. The director arranged for Low Wai Kwong and several Thai kickboxing experts to fight with Ka Fai. In front of the experts Ka Fai had to stay alert. Ka Fai said that at first he was afraid that the experts' real punches would hurt him, so they held back. Yet no matter what the fight did not look real, he even told them to stop holding back and he would adjust. Ka Fai joked that since he had some training he learned a few ways to block. Actually Ka Fai fought more viciously than the experts as he was an animal. He chased the four experts and even Low Wai Kwong slipped twice. Once he almost rammed into the wall and frightening the director into stopping the shoot. Later, Low Wai Kwong was sweating bullets as well and joked that he finally got a taste of Ka Fai's agility. He was not superficial and had superb strength. He said that this time he only worked two days and thought that the shoot would not be too difficult. Yet after the shoot he truly was exhausted. After this scene, Ka Fai also breathed a sigh of relief. He said that half a year of training was for this one scene. The most vicious was not him but director Roy Chow Hin Yeung, who almost had them killed. Since he was buying, he could only cooperate and sell. He only hoped that the sale would have value. * (2012/02/16) Director Ang Lee's classic film EAT DRINK MAN WOMAN 19 years later yielded a Tsao Jui-Yuan directed continuation JOYFUL REUNION, which invited Gua Ah Lei to star. [ BLAH OF THE WEEK ] Columns, Reviews, Interviews 1. MING PAO DAILY, FEBRUARY 19 2012, FILM WORDS MR. AND MRS. GAMBLER IS COMICAL February early Spring is the Valentine's Month. This week's new films include several romantic comedy, opening on top are the U.S. THIS MEANS WAR and the domestic MR. AND MRS. GAMBLERS (LAN DOH FU YU LAN DOH CHAI). Both are conventional action comedy films that remind viewers the Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie starred special agent killer romantic feud MR. AND MRS. SMITH years ago. The former is changed into two special agents fighting over a woman, while the latter turns into a gambling couple's battle of wits. The authentic Wong Jing film MR. AND MRS. GAMBLERS returns to Wong Jing's expertise gambling film genre with a new team of Chapman To Man Jat and Fiona Sit Hoi Kei. Although it is sloppy as usual, it adds twists and the family mahjong fun, which are suitable to the Hong Kong taste. It has a lot of comedy. In it the "Shu Family" (Loser) parents Law Kar Ying and Bonnie Wong Man Wai are rather comical and even have wonderful film within film scenes that have fun at the expense of Wong Kar Wai. The leads are crazy and wild and this film is one of the more successful recent Wong Jing films. (Two and a Half Out of Five Stars) - SHEK KEI 2. TA KUNG PAO, FEBRUARY 19 2012, LIGHT SHADOW PATH INTERNET FILM MARKET IS ABOUT TO EXPLODE Earlier an action film held a celebration. On the surface it looked very successful but how did it do actually? Colleagues have a general idea. A movie that claims to cost 100 million makes over 100 million in the Mainland. After promotional costs and overseas revenue, its loss should be 1/3 to 1/2 of the cost and not worth celebrating. Action scenes are key to action films, but they still are not as important as the story (the screenplay). Without reasonable plot, the film cannot withstand the thunderous scenes. Secondly, a commercial film without superstars like Tom Cruise, Matt Damon or Jackie Chan, Jet Li (Lee Nin Kit) cannot support a big production either. If the story and the cast have not met the requirement, the greater the action scenes are the more regrettable people feel. However, this film deserves some praises, as less than 1/3 of its production budget is actor salary. In other words the production cost basically can be reflected on the screen. Nowadays many movies have casts that cost half or more of the cost. Viewers truly have no way to "laugh" at a "comedy" that several actors walk around in. Some film company bosses complain about directors' lack of professionalism as they blindly "chase" the inflating production costs and never start with creativity. They keep making the same old subjects and even fight over the same subjects. Yet, with so much available funding around, anyone can match up a few actors with an old and toothless story to make a movie. Quality of course is not guaranteed. On the other hand, as film company bosses say directors are not professional enough, are bosses professional? When they invest in a movie why do they not make sure, the so-called "floating funding" is unprofessional. Feeling unaccustomed to unprofessional competitors, how professional they are themselves probably should not be asked. The Mainland is the biggest market of Chinese films. Last year its box office was 13 billion, a growth of 30% from two years ago. The trend looks great. Yet co-production film performance has not performed as expected in the overseas market, which dropped 40% from two years ago and made only around 2 billion. Hong Kong film's traditional market even dropped year after year as Hollywood films further eroded it. With the rise of Taiwan films, its situation is deteriorating. The Mainland market is not easy, the overseas market does not look well, have film bosses and producers sense that they are in "danger"? The answer is "not necessarily". Film is popular culture, paying attention to market and trend at any moment is the most important "homework". Some feels that film's future and "way to make money" is online, which is correct! Nowadays internet royalties continue to rise, but video royalties are no longer worth a cent. The more important fact is people online are not definitely believers in copyright. Many are copyleft (leaning toward online information being free for use) supporters. The future is too soon to tell. - TIN LIK [ In Production Now/Soon ] NATURAL BORN LOVERS Can : Tin Sun Oi Ching Kong Lit : Natural Born Love Maniac d. Not every love story is a fairy tale. After a dramatic wedding feast, unusual love stories unfold towards unexpected endings: a brother and sister in love caught by the mother, a married painter falls for his young life drawing model of same sex, an intimacy between a dance school teacher and his wealthy but senior student, a lesbian couple of which one has role-play paranoid, a dreadful love triangle ending with the girl being beheaded… "Love Actually…Sucks!" celebrates love that no one care but real, for life is love, love as it is. [ PHILADELPHIA QFEST ] Taking inspiration from six different court cases involving crimes of the heart, Scud examines the intense, often self-destructive sexual longings among several well-to-do young Hong Kong residents – gay, lesbian and straight. The film opens with the most scandalous wedding reception ever put on film: a young couple’s marriage ends (in the most dramatic fashion) before it begins. There is the 30-ish married gym instructor who trolls the active bathroom scene for young flesh; a lesbian couple with roleplay issues; a dance instructor who becomes the object of attraction to his much older student; a married painter who falls for his male model; a brother and sister who take family togetherness a bit too literally; and a young man who becomes increasingly deranged until he takes his love interest problems into his own hands. In Scud’s world, every love story is a fairy tale – but here the stories are sexual and troubling. Overall, a complex, sensual and compelling film. Free. All seating is first-come, first served. Doors open at 6:30pm. UPCOMING MOVIES Series 1: Jang Hun Plus One! Jang Hun started out as an assistant director to Kim Ki-Duk, but with his first film, Rough Cut, he established himself as Korea’s answer to Steven Soderbergh: a director making big budget movies with an independent sensibility. Rough Cut, and Secret Reunion, The Frontline have all become massive box office hits without making an compromises or talking down to their audiences. To round out the trio of movies in this mini-retrospective, we’re including White Night, another crime film that transforms itself into something dark, glittering and truly amazing. Tuesday, February 28, 2012 @ 7pm WHITE NIGHT (2009, 135 minutes, North American Premiere) White Night is a sprawling, evil epic about an unsolved crime that happened 14 years previously that has spilled its poison out over the subsequent years. Based on a best-selling Japanese novel, and featuring a riveting performance by Go Soo, star of The Frontline, director Park Shin-Woo turns this movie into a slick, beautifully realized film about true evil, as a detective refuses to let go of this single case, instead insisting on following its threads for years no matter where they lead. And where they lead is dark and truly shocking. This hit film has been called the best Korean film of 2009 by several critics and once you’ve seen it, it’s hard to forget. Tribeca Cinemas: 54 Varick Street, on the corner of Canal Street, one block from the A, C, E and 1 train Canal Street stops. Price? Free. All seating is first-come, first serve basis.
