It was a result of people from over 20 nations and places working together. Zhang Yimou said, "This was a very unique experience. I believed such an unique experience would be reflected in my work in the future." This year China had WHITE DEER PLAIN, THE FLOWERS OF WAR and FLYING SWORDS OF DRAGON GATE taking part in the film festival. In addition nine films took part in the short film, panorama and other segments. Zhang Yimou said, "Actually it should be even more." He felt that Chinese directors should participate in more international film festivals and said, "Not just Berlin Film Festival, all international film festivals are very important to Chinese films because they are windows." Speaking of the old subject of Chinese films "going global", Zhang Yimou said, "This slogan has been shouted for years, but actually any type of cultural product has no shortcut to go global, the key is in good work. Cultures may be different but the emotions are the same. As long as good work that stands up in common human emotions can exceed the obstacles of nations, races, geography and culture and go global." For Chinese films to "step outside", they need even more young directors to touch people with good work. As for how to create good work, he simply answered, "Everyone should try to do their best." On the day of the premiere, Zhang Yimou, writer Yan Geling, Ni Ni, Christian Bale, Dong Dawei and others appeared on the film festival red carpet. Before the premiere, they appeared at the film festival press hall and responded to reporters' questions. Zhang Yimou said that he chose to make this film because this story was very unique and deeply attracted him. When asked why he often made his movies from the female perspective, he said, "Maybe because I am a male director." Some European viewers said that the story seemed excessively cruel, Zhang Yimou said that the facts were much crueler than in the film. however he hoped this part of history would be able to make people think about and cherish peace. While shooting a family reunion scene for A SIMPLE LIFE (TOH JEH), an one year old kept on crying. The crew did not know what to do. Even the child's mother and director Ann Hui On Wa could not calm her down. Finally Wa Jai gave it a try and immediately tamed the child. Playing the child's parents in film, Jason Chan Chi Sun and "Young Cecilia Cheung Pak Chi" tried to hold the child to become familiar. Yet every time they took their marks the child pouted then began to cry. His mother had to pick him up immediately to calm him down. Wa Jai then gave it a try as he mischievously had a Lin Chiling photo book in one hand and a bottle of milk in the other for the child to choose. The child saw Wa Jai doing so, immediately shut up, stared at Wa Jai and began to baby talk. Wa Jai gently said to the child, "When you cry we can't get off work." The child seemed to understand and laughed. Hui On Wa immediately started shooting and in the shortest time completed this joyful scene that they waited over three hours for. As the director accepted the take, Wa Jai immediately praised the child and said, "You're very good, next year I will apply for a Best Supporting Actor nomination for you!" The child clapped happily and the entire team applauded in response. Wa Jai honestly said that he really liked children, but he thought that parents now would only spoil their children and did not know how to teach them. Although he was not a father yet, he truly could not overlook how his friends spoil their children. He felt that when a child was tired they would automatically shut up. Yet when the child cry and you tried everything to get it to stop, then you spoil it. * (2012/02/15) The film TIN SUN OI CHING KONG (NATURAL BORN LOVE MANIAC) yesterday held a production start ceremony. When viewers reminded him that Chow Yun Fat had a divorce with Candy Yu On On, he said, "Before the divorce he was box office poison, after winning the Best Actor award he didn't have another divorce! Right?" Speaking of Nicholas Tse Ting Fung, Michael could not help but lament, "The newspaper said they are reuniting, the divorce alone went on for two years. Why? Because Ting Fung isn't just a Best Actor, next to him is a Best Actress. I also wish they would be able to get back together like the way it was!" Although Michael was telling joke after joke, as soon as he mentioned his late brother Ricky Hui Koon Ying he choked up. "Speaking of absurdity on the plane, sigh, I am very heartbroken. I am reminding of my brother Ah Ying. He was the less willing to take a plane, every time he did he had to take a sedative!" Michael admitted that he has not performed in a long time. He was so excited that his voice was a little hoarse. Originally he planned to invite his brother Hui Koon Ying to be his guest, but unfortunately it did not pan out. He said, "Originally I had some stories about him, but I don't dare to tell them. I am very afraid that even I wouldn't be able to laugh. Tonight's audience response was great, too bad my brother couldn't attend." I hope this spring it will be able to deliver this wonderful force to every viewer so everyone can receive the love and happiness that they have been waiting for." However he was a little jealous too as he wanted to observe in person whether the three female leads' "perfect men" lived up to the standard. He often gave them trouble, which made two female leads lament and turning the target back on Wong Jing "Actually Director Wong is the real perfect man, he is both funny and rich." Wong Jing happily said, "The perfect man standards are all different. I in my family's eyes am the perfect man. Our two male leads Cheng Chung Kei and (Chapman) To Man Jat) are also perfect men." Who was her biggest competition? She said, "Everyone is great, I am great too. I will attend the award ceremony, I won't be absent because I know I would lose. (Maybe it will be a surprise?) The surprise wouldn't be me, how tragic you guys are." As for Best Actor, Shu Qi picked Lau Ching Wan but she did not know whether his two nominations would split his votes. Among the nominated films she has only seen LIFE WITHOUT PRINCIPLE (DUET MING GUM), so she did not dare to comment. * (2012/02/10) Donnie Yen Chi Tan two nights ago worked on the Clarence Ford (Fok Yiu Leung) directed film DUT SHU SUN FUN in Shenzhen. GAMBLER (LAN DOH FU DAU LAN DOH CHAI) will soon be released, as the film title implies gambling will be its selling point. Ah Jat in the early 90s owed over 1 million and ran away to Taiwan. In the film she had to intensely flip cards and learn many gambling table terms. After many years, Ah Jat stressed that as he grew older he felt how hard it was to make money. Thus he would not gamble again. He said, "Back then I was only 18, I couldn't think of anything to get rich so I relied on gambling. Now if I lose money I would be very sore! Yet a little Lunar New Year fun was OK!" What was Ah Jat good at? Ah Jat complained, "I wasn't good at anything so I lost 1 million!" He boasted that back then he has won over 1 million, thus at age 18 he already bought his life gold Rolex. he stressed that he was the living example of gamblers. MR.'s director was Wong Jing. Ah Jat praised Brother Jing for still willing to make authentic Hong Kong films. He said, "Many directors now have returned to the Mainland or make co-productions. He said no, because too many films were released during the Lunar New Year." He joked, "If you feel lost you can watch this film!" Fiona this time worked with Ah Jat for the fifth time. Ah Jat's wife Krystal Tin Yui Nei asked her husband not to ask Fiona again to keep from preventing her from meeting guys. Ah Jat said, "The Old Lady said to give Fiona more chances!" On the day of the shoot, Andrew Lau Wai Keung, Stanley Kwan Kam Peng, Joe Cheung Tung Cho, Lam Ka Tung, Angelababy, Mainland director Ning Hao and others participated for free and played themselves. Even the retired Raymond Chow Man Wai came to participate, which touched Ann Hui On Wa and Wa Jai very much. This time was also the only time Sister Tao attended a premiere with her young master Roger, which opened her eyes. Playing Sister Tao Sister Deanie that day went to an old fashioned beauty salon for an old fashioned hairstyle and manicure. Wa Jai praised, "You are very pretty!" Sister Deanie could not be more pleased. That day Ip Tak Han was also very happy to reunite with her ENJOY YOURSELF TONIGHT friend Helena Law Lan. In the film Sister Law Lan played Sister Tao's idol. On the set they often talked about the joy of their previous collaborations. Wa Jai gave a special thanks to Chow Man Wai. He said, "All along Mr. Chow has taken great care of me. When a company co-worker asked whether he was interested in guest starring, he not only agreed right away but also brought his wife and daughter along. He was also the earliest on the set." Wa Jai pointed out that Mr. Chow usually went to bed very early, but he would rather sleep a few hours later so he would be able to work at night with everyone. During the official shoot, Lau Wai Keung even added lines himself. He introduced his female companion Baby as his girlfriend to Wa Jai. Baby pointed out that this performance was like a cheerful party, being able to have a chance to work with a group of elders and directors was very rare. She never thought about her role or her lines, even if she just passed by she did not mind. The most important was the chance to support Hong Kong film like everyone else. * (2012/02/10) Shawn Yue Man Lok and Miriam Yeung Chin Wa earlier worked on Valentine's Day card photos for LOVE IN A PUFF (JI MING YU CHUN GIU) sequel LOVE IN THE BUFF. They had different impressions of Valentine's Day. Chin Wa said that as long as her husband was by her side, everyday was Valentine's Day. Lok Jai said that he would have to work on Valentine's Day so he could not sense the holiday atmosphere anyway. On the day of the shoot they waved props around on the set. Chin Wa had a lot of fun, but Lok Jai was very uneasy. Lok Jai was very afraid of affecting Chin Wa's Dragon baby did not dare to make any sudden move. Chin Wa however had a lot of fun and made a variety of poses. Lok Jai however still kept his distance from her. They picked up flowers for a photo and planned to create Valentine's Day atmosphere. When Chin Wa picked up flowers she was even bashful, but Lok Jai wielded them like swords. Would Lok Jai give flowers on Valentine's Day? He admitted that flowers were very outdated. He was very afraid of giving flowers. Even when he did he would not just give random flowers. He hoped to have a more unique way to express his love. This year was the first Valentine's Day Chin Wa would spend with her baby. She said that she would have to make proper arrangements that day, but her husband might surprise her. Lok Jai said that now work came first, on Valentine's Day he would be working in the Mainland. * (2012/02/10) Sammi Cheng Sau Man and Louis Koo Tin Lok earlier went to Shangri-La to make the film ROMANCING IN THIN AIR (GO HOI BUT JI LUEN II). Due to the location's high altitude, air was thin and they had a tough time during the shoot. With an entire family of sinusitis sufferers, Goo Jai during the shoot had a nasal water build up that gave him a splitting headache. However he praised Sammi's strength. During the crying herself hoarse scenes, she still was more than able to handle it. Goo Jai in the film did not have as many action scenes as Sammi, but in one scene he went to look for Sammi in the forest. He had to scream there, due to the thin air he felt dizzy from just running while screaming. During the shoot, Goo Jai's sinus had a water buildup and required long term medication. In high air pressure locations he would have headache, eye and ear pain. At the time he suffered from a lot of pain. Although he had medicine, after taking it he was dizzy and nauseous. Thus he tried not to take it. Even so, Goo Jai liked the life in Shangri-La very much. Everyday he saw very pretty lake and mountain scenery. His work schedule was stable, life was simple and he was very happy. When he returned to Hong Kong after the shoot, he discovered that his health was much better. He hoped after retirement he would be able to live life like this. Goo Jai also said that now at home he only ate and slept. He would be in bed by 6PM and out of bed before sunrise. Reporters said that he was so rich he could retire now; Goo Jai said that it was not a money issue. Now he still wanted to work. Sammi said that before she went to Shangri-La, her health was great. Yet after arriving she needed some time to adjust. In the film Sammi had to run like mad and even had many screaming until she was hoarse performance. She even had a scene in which she had to pull Goo Jai out of the water. She honestly said that after these scenes she was very tired, she needed to exert a lot of effort. Goo Jai joked Sammi was very healthy because Gao Yuanyuan had a similar performance, after which she was almost dead. Sammi on the other hand could perform several times. Sammi said that after the shoot she had to try to catch her breath too. Due to the dry climate, Sammi's skin condition during the shoot was not great but she did not mind. She accepted her image in the film, but on the stage she had to be pretty. Sammi also pointed out that the character's stubbornness toward love touched her. She was not stubborn and thought love needed hard work to maintain. Earlier when she made EVERLASTING REGRET (CHEUNG HUNG GOR) she could not leave the character and suffered depression. This time she again had to make crying and screaming scenes. How was she able to leave the character? Sammi said that when making similar scenes she took a lot of time to get into character. The directors did not dare to chat with her, but as soon as she heard cut she was able to leave. She continued, when she made the EVERLASTING REGRET crying scene, she could not stop even the director yelled cut. Perhaps because she was sick at the time, she learned a lot about handling the character. * (2012/02/09) The 31st Hong Kong Film Award will take place on April 15 at the Tsim Sha Tsui Cultural Center. Yesterday a press conference was held to announce the nominations. Every year Best Actor and Best Actress have been definite foci. Lau Ching Wan this year with LIFE WITHOUT PRINCIPLES (DUET MING GUM) and OVERHEARD 2 (SIT TING FUNG WON 2) received Best Actor nominations, competing with A SIMPLE LIFE (TOH JEH)'s Andy Lau Tak Wa and LET THE BULLETS FLY's Ge You and Jiang Wen. Best Actress favorite of course was A SIMPLE LIFE's multiple Best Actress award winner Deanie Ip Tak Han. A BEAUTIFUL LIFE's Shu Qi is considered the dark horse. WU XIA's Tang Wei, DON'T GO BREAKING MY HEART (DAN SUN NAM NUI)'s Gao Yuanyuan and FLYING SWORDS OF DRAGON GATE (LUNG MOON FEI GAP)'s Zhou Xun were also nominated. This year FLYING SWORDS OF DRAGON GATE and LET THE BULLETS FLY received the most nominations with 13 each. Yesterday Lau Ching Wan, Nicholas Tse Ting Fung and the Hong Kong Film Award Association members attended the press conference. They announced the nominations. When Ting Fung announced Best Supporting Actor nominees, he realized that he was nominated with SHAOLIN (SUN SIU LUM JI) and was embarrassed. Later, Ting Fung said that he never thought that he would be nominated. Because SHAOLIN was made awhile ago, even he forgot about it. Speaking of the competition, he pointed out that his fellow nominees were all elders who he admired. He did not want to participate for three years in a row. This year he would already be very satisfied in the audience. Was it because he has already won both Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor he did not care? Ting Fung denied that as he would be very happy that others recognized his hard work. Among the nominees, he said that all were his elders. When he saw Uncle Kenneth Tsang Kong's OVERHEARD 2 performance he truly was stunned. Speaking of Lucas being hospitalized for illness, some said for four days, he said, "That's crazy, just one day. He's fine. During the New Year I had a stuffy nose too." Lau Ching Wan this year had two Best Actor nominations. He thanked everyone for their support as he hoped to do his best for Hong Kong film. Which film was he more confident about? He said that the news was very sudden and he liked both characters. Was he worried that his votes would be divided up? He said that he would worry about that later, he was already very pleased to be nominated. He also said that every year the competition was very strong, he only hoped that the award show would be entertaining. Earlier he received the Film Critic Society Best Actor, was his confidence increased? He said that this situation has already happened many times, but each time he would be excited. Ultimately two organizations had different judging standards. Jiang Wen and Ge You were both nominated for Best Actor. Ge You was truly very happy to be nominated again with LET THE BULLETS FLY. He was happier that he was nominated with director Jiang Wen. He thanked the voters for their support and recognition. Jiang Wen was working on a film in France. His office responded, "LET THE BULLETS FLY received 13 Hong Kong Film Award nominations, which is the best recognition for Hong Kong film professionals who participated in this film on and off screen. Thank you (Carina Lau) Ka Ling, Uncle (William Chang Suk Ping) and all the on and off camera workers. The happiest was the Best Action Choreography nomination as we remember director Sit Chun Wai." Nominated for Best Supporting Actress with LET, Lau Ka Ling was very grateful for everyone's recognition of her work. She thanked director Jiang Wen and Ge You, Chang Suk Ping for the exceptionally wonderful costumes, she also thanked all viewers who liked her character. Ip Tak Han was again nominated with A SIMPLE LIFE for Best Actress. She only responded with "extremely honored". Shu Qi was very happy and thanked director Andrew Lau Wai Keung and co-star Liu Ye. Without those two handsome men A BEAUTIFUL LIFE's Shu Qi would not exist. She would definitely attend if she would be in Hong Kong. Gao Yuanyuan was both surprised and excited about her nomination, as she thanked everyone for recognizing her. Tsui Hark said that he was very happy about FLYING SWORDS OF DRAGON GATE's 13 nominations, which was a honor for the entire creative team. The film also was the result of the workers' hard work, the joy of nominations had to be shared with everyone. Johnnie To Kei Fung with LIFE WITHOUT PRINCIPLES was nominated for Best Director and Best Picture. he said that this was a film that he liked very much. He thanked the cast for their patience and giving him three years to make the film. Ann Hui On Wa with A SIMPLE LIFE was nominated for Best Director. She is in Taiwan and was very happy to be nominated, the happiest about the Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress and Best Cinematography nominations. In addition, this year the Hong Kong Film Award received HK$5,668,400 from the film development council to assist in the production. This year the award show will air live on TVB and Now. 31ST HONG KONG FILM AWARD NOMINATIONS BEST PICTURE A SIMPLE LIFE (TOH JEH) LIFE WITHOUT PRINCIPLE (DUET MING GUM) FLYING SWORDS OF DRAGON GATE (LUNG MOON FEI GAP) OVERHEARD 2 (SIT TING FUNG WON 2) LET THE BULLETS FLY BEST DIRECTOR Ann Hui On Wa (A SIMPLE LIFE) Johnnie To Kei Fung (LIFE WITHOUT PRINCIPLE) Tsui Hark (FLYING SWORDS OF DRAGON GATE) Alan Mak Siu Fai, Felix Chong Man Keung (OVERHEARD 2) Jiang Wen (LET THE BULLETS FLY) BEST SCREENPLAY Susan Chan Suk Yin (A SIMPLE LIFE) Wai Ka Fai, Yau Nai Hoi, Ray Chan Wai Bun, Jevons Au Man Kit (DON'T GO BREAKING MY HEART) Milky Way Creative Team, Au Kin Yee, Wong King Fai (LIFE WITHOUT PRINCIPLE) Alan Mak Siu Fai, Chong Man Dor (OVERHEARD 2) Zhu Sjjin, Shu Ping, Jiang Wen, Guo Junli, Wei Xiao, Li Bukong (LET THE BULLETS FLY) BEST ACTOR Andy Lau Tak Wa (A SIMPLE LIFE) Lau Ching Wan (LIFE WITHOUT PRINCIPLES) Lau Ching Wan (OVERHEARD 2) Jiang Wen (LET THE BULLETS FLY) Ge You (LET THE BULLETS FLY) BEST ACTRESS Shu Qi (A BEAUTIFUL LIFE) Tang Wei (WU XIA) Deanie Ip Tak Han (A SIMPLE LIFE) Gao Yuanyuan (DON'T GO BREAKING MY HEART) Zhou Xun (FLYING DRAGONS OF DRAGON GATE) BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR Jimmn Wang Yu (WU XIA) Paul Chun Pui (A SIMPLE LIFE) Nicholas Tse Ting Fung (SHAOLIN) Lo Hoi Peng (LIFE WITHOUT PRINCIPLE) Kenneth Tsang Kong (OVERHEARD 2) BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS Wai Ying Hung (WU XIA) Qin Hailu (A SIMPLE LIFE) So Hung Suen (LIFE WITHOUT PRINCIPLE) Kwai Lun-Mei (FLYING SWORDS OF DRAGON GATE) Carina Lau Ka Ling (LET THE BULLETS FLY) BEST NEW PERFORMER Jam Hsiao (THE KILLER WHO NEVER KILLS) Shiga Lin (LAN KWAI FONG) Zheng Shuang (MURAL) Karena Ng Chin yu (MAGIC TO WIN) Sheng Chien (FLYING SWORDS OF DRAGON GATE) BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY Jake Pollack, Lai Yiu Fai (WU XIA) Nelson Yu Lik Wai (A SIMPLE LIFE) Johnny Choi (FLYING SWORDS OF DRAGON GATE) Anthony Pun Yiu Ming (OVERHEARD 2) Zhao Fei (LET THE BULLETS FLY) BEST FILM EDITING Derek Hui Won Yu (WU XIA) David Richardson (LIFE WITHOUT PRINCIPLE) Yau Chi Wai (FLYING SWORDS OF DFRAGON GATE) Curran Pang Jing Hei (OVERHEARD 2) Jiang Wen, Cao Weijie (LET THE BULLETS FLY) BEST ART DIRECTION Yee Chung Man, Sun Li (WU XIA) Yee Chung Man, Ben Lau Man Hung (SHAOLIN) Yee Chung Man, Ben Lau Man Hung (FLYING SWORDS OF DRAGON GATE) Daniel Lee Yan Kong (WHITE VENGEANCE) Wong Kar Lang, Gao Yiguang, Yu QInghua (LET THE BULLETS FLY) BEST COSTUME DESIGN AND MAKE UP Dora Ng Lei Lo (WU XIA) Bobo Ng Bo Ling (MURAL) Lai Hsuan-Wu (FLYING SWORDS OF DRAGON GATE) Eddie Mok Kwan Kit, Debby Wong Ming Ha (WHITE VENGEANCE) William Chang Suk Ping (LET THE BULLETS FLY) BEST ACTION DESIGN Ching Siu Tung (THE SORCERER AND THE WHITE SNAKE) Donnie Yen Chi Tan (WU XIA) Corey Yuen Kwai, Yuen Tak, Li Chung Chi (SHAOLIN) Yuen Bun, Nam Hoi Hong, Sun Kin Kwai (FLYING SWORDS OF DRAGON GATE) Ailen Sit Chun Wai, Li Chun Chi (LET THE BULLETS FLY) BEST ORIGINAL FILM SCORE Chan Kwong Wing (A BEAUTIFUL LIFE) Chan Kwong Wing, Peter Kam Pui Tat, Chatchai Pongprapaphan (WU XIA) William Hu, Li Hanjiang, Gu Xin (FLYING SWORDS OF DRAGON GATE) Henry Lai Won Man (WHITE VENGEANCE) Chan Kwong Wing (OVERHEARD 2) BEST ORIGINAL SONG MISSED ADDRESS (A BEAUTIFUL LIFE) Ivana Wong Yuen Chi TWO HEARTED FLOWER (HI, FIDELITY) Sandy Lam Yik Lin WANDERING LOST IN THE WORLD (WU XIA) Dou Wei COMPREHEND (SHAOLIN) Andy Lau Tak Wa FLOODED GOLDEN MOUNTAIN (LIFE WITHOUT PRINCIPLE) Ngok Mei BEST SOUND DESIGN Nopawat Likitwong, Traithep Wongpaiboon (WU XIA) Kim Seok-Won (FLYING SWORDS OF DRAGON GATE) Phyllis Cheng Wing Yuen, Lam Siu Yu (WHITE VENGEANCE) Kinson Tsang King Cheung (OVERHEARD 2) Wen Bo, Wang Gang (LET THE BULLETS FLYING) BEST VISUAL EFFECTS Ryu Hee-Jung, Eddy Wong Won Hin, Ken Law Wai Ho (THE SORCERER AND THE WHITE SNAKE) Yung Kwok Yin, Andy Kang Chung Cheung (WU XIA) Christopher Bremble (MURAL) Wook Kim, Josh Cole, Frankie Chung Chi Hung (FLYING SWORDS OF DRAGON GATE) Victor Wong Won Tat, Eman Tse Yi Man (LET THE BULLETS FLY) BEST TWO COASTS CHINESE FILMS YOU ARE THE APPLE OF MY EYE THE FLOWERS OF WAR IF YOU ARE THE ONE 2 STARRY STARRY NIGHT WARRIORS OF THE RAINBOW: SEEDIQ BALE BEST NEW DIRECTOR Jessey Tsang Tsui Shan (BIG BLUE LAKE) Calvin Poon Yuen Leung (HI, FIDELITY) Bill Yip Kim Fung (CURE) * (2012/02/09) The Elanne Kong Yeuk Lam, Aniu (Chen Hing Cheung), Wai Ying Hung starred Singapore Malaysia film THE WEDDING DIARY earlier began a four day three night promotion in Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Singapore. At every stop they attracted over 100 viewers. The local passion affected Elanne who had a female lead in an overseas film for the first time. During this promotion, Elanne felt like she was truly getting married as she and her on screen husband Aniu changed into multiple wedding costumes and even arrived in an antique car. Speaking of their bed scene in the film, they were very embarrassed. Elanne said, "The film had three bed scenes, during the shoot everyone was very nervous, very embarrassed. At the premiere, Aniu and I didn't dare to watch the scene again. We had to cover up with our hands, we didn't dare to watch again until it passed." Aniu revealed Elanne during the bed scene shoot in order for him to get into his character more easily spray an entire bottle of perfume on him. During the promotion, Elanne and Aniu both called each other baby and appeared to be as sweet as a couple. Even the director could not help but say they were disgusting. In addition, Elanne's on screen mother Wai Ying Hung even announced on behalf of Elanne that if the box office would exceed HK$5 million Elanne would walk naked on the streets. Elanne did not know how to respond as she answered, "Thank you very much, Ma!" The crowd laughed. * (2012/02/09) Janice Man Wing Shan was a February online magazine cover girl. Janice Man admitted that she did not have anything specific that she looked for in a mate and no one has ever proposed to her. She was not disappointed thought because she believed it was destined. Like her relationship with Dou Xiao in her new film NIGHTFALL (DAI JUI BO), even though they were in love they did not end up together. Speaking of working with Dou Xiao for the first time, JM said that thanks to this overactive person she was not depressed for long during the shoot. She said, "Actually Shawn's personality is very close to his character in UNDER THE HAWTHORN TREE. He is very active, very happy, which may have something to do with him growing up overseas!" * (2012/02/09) Sammi Cheng Sau Man and Louis Koo Tin Lok earlier were on a TVB Entertainment News Channel interview with Luisa Leitao (Lai Chi San). They not only shared their ROMANCING IN THIN AIR (GO HOI BUT JI LUEN II)'s experience but also talked about their views on love in detail. Goo Jai said the most memorable was the scene in he carried Sammi while singing. Because at the time he just had leg surgery, he kept worry about his wound. Luckily Sammi was light and he was able to finish the scene. Sammi joked that in this scene she suffered as she had to listen to Goo Jai sing. She stated that it had nothing to do with Goo Jai's singing, only because she was a professional singer the scene made her want to sing! As for their own views on love, Sammi said that she was not stubborn in love. Instead she focused more on the effort that they gave in love. After reuniting with Andy Hui Chi On, she was often asked about proposal, wedding and parenthood, she reiterated that she never thought about proposal and had no plan to wed yet. Yet she insisted against her mate to propose in public, if it happened she would run away on the spot! Goo Jai joked that Sammi and On Jai's reunion benefited him because he had no paparazzi during the film shoot to recycle their rumor! When asked about Goo Jai's romantic status, he continued to keep his mouth shut as she said that career came first! * (2012/02/09) Sam Hui Koon Kit and his son Ryan Hui Wai Yun yesterday shared their music experience at the Hong Kong University and held a small concert as they performed four hits, including the song that he wrote for his alma mater to celebrate its 100th anniversary. Sam even performed three encores to satisfy listeners. As an alumnus he had a lot of memories, revealing that he used foul language, drank and chased girls. He even also worked many jobs. Perhaps because he wanted to become a singer since childhood and was vane, he would work every film company and record company job. Finally he did not even study psychology. Sam said, "But maybe of my grass root background, I am especially sensitive to grass root people's lives. My song writing was timelier." Sam again with the students sang BRIGHT to put an end of the concert. He said that he was so touched that he almost broke down in tears. Sami revealed that because he knew university students were not too happy lately, he felt a sense of duty to cheer them up. What song would he give to the oppressed Hong Kong people? He again mentioned the song VOICE OF THE PRODIGAL SON, as the lyrics said if it was destined it must be, if it wasn't don't force it. In addition, speaking of brother Ricky Hui Koon Ying's passing, Sam said that he still missed him. Sometimes he still wanted to call him and would listen to his songs and look at his photos. In his April concert, he and brother Michael Hui Koon Man, sons Ryan and Scott remember Ah Ying. * (2012/02/09) Teddy Robin Kwan earlier with MERRY GO ROUND won the Best Actor award at the Golden Koala Chinese Film Festival in Sydney Australia. Ella Koon Yun Na also won Best Actress with the film. MERRY GO ROUND director Clement Cheng Si Kit two nights ago welcomed him at the airport and presented flowers to wish him well. Teddy Robin two nights ago with Susan Shaw Yam Yam flew from Australia to Guangdong then to Hong Kong. This time Teddy defeated LET THE BULLETS FLY's Chow Yun Fat and Ge You, which he admitted was quite surprising. Because he was nominated with both GALLANTS (DA LUI TOI) and MERRY GO ROUND, at first he thought he won with GALLANTS. Teddy Robin pointed out that MERRY was about charity organization Tung Wah hospitals' history. He was very happy to win with this film. How would he celebrate? Teddy said that the airline did not have a direct flight back to Hong Kong. They had to transfer in Guangzhou and finally waited 15 minutes before departure. Now he would not go home and rest the most. Yesterday Teddy appeared on a radio interview, Best Actress Koon Yun Na called the station as well. Ella said that due to a television series she could not accept the award in person, which she regretted. She saw photos of Teddy with the award and wanted to touch the award soon. She thanked the cast and the crew, everyone had a lot of fun working together. Of course most importantly she had to thank Teddy. In the film they had many scenes together and she thanked him for his guidance. Later she would like to celebrate with everyone when she would have the chance. Teddy praised Ella's performance as very natural, her eyes knew how to act. He even revealed that he has seen Ella's boyfriend and they even jammed together. [ BLAH OF THE WEEK ] Columns, Reviews, Interviews 1. MING PAO DAILY, FEBRUARY 12 2012, FILM WORDS ROMANCING IN THIN AIR LACKS JOHNNIE TO'S TRUE COLOR This week the opening box office champion is the Johnnie To Kei Fung directed, Wai Ka Fai, Yau Nai Hoi and others co-written ROMANCING IN THIN AIR (GO HOI BUT JI LUEN II). Louis Koo Tin Lok plays a superstar who due to a broken heart runs to the out of this world paradise Shangri-La and develops a relationship with Sammi Cheng Sau Man, an inn owner whose husband has vanished. The most unique part is late in this story, when Koo Tin Lok turns that husband who is lost in the icy mountain forest for years into a movie. The movie within the movie turns tragedy into joy, then the heart-broken couple officially bids farewell to the past and starts their new lives and love. Curiously the Mainland snowy mountain resort is made completely Westernized and loses touch with reality, as its characters stumble and fall, scream and yell at every turn. It truly is under suspicion for making drama for the sake of drama. This film is not a film of To Kei Fung's true nature. The director technique seems to lack concentration and is quite far from his previous film that adopted an original approach, LIFE WITHOUT PRINCIPLE (DUET MING MING). (Two out of five stars) - SHEK KEI 2. TA KUNG PAO, FEBRUARY 12 2012, LIGHT SHADOW PATH LAU CHING WAN'S BEST ACTOR CHANCES ARE ON THE RISE Time flies. In the brink of the eye the Hong Kong Film Award turns 31 this year. Unfortunately the Best Picture and Best Director nominations not only have the same movies and directors but also do not surprise many. In recent years Best Director have gone to either Ann Hui On Wa, Peter Chan Ho Sun, Johnnie To Kei Fung or Tsui Hark. Occasionally joining the competition, aside from Teddy Chan Tak Sum's victory, Dante Lam Chiu Yin, Wilson Yip Wai Shun and others have not won. Movie wise, the only more alternative film is Hui On Wa's A SIMPLE LIFE (TOH JEH). Missing are "new school" films like LOVE IN A PUFF (JI MING YU CHUN GIU) and GALLANTS (DA LUI TOI), obviously the film industry has a vitality problem. Which movie has the most nominations also does not have too much meaning. Usually big productions have ample resources and have an easier time with a variety of technical awards. Most of the attention will be on whether they can win Best Picture, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Actor and Best Actress. This year's Best Picture and Best Director have the same nominations. More unexpected is Chan Ho Sun's WU XIA not making the list. Actually WU XIA is decently made, too bad it resembles HISTORY OF VIOLENCE too much. In addition at the Hong Kong box office its performance was very weak. It was one of the rare Director Chan's work that did ont receive Best Picture and Director nominations. A SIMPLE LIFE's style is the same as Hui On Wa's previous work. FLYING SWORDS OF DRAGON GATE (LUNG MOON FEI GAP) is the 3D version of Tsui Hark films. OVERHEARD 2 (SIT TING FUNG WON 2) is a sequel. Jiang Wen's LET THE BULLETS FLY is a breath of fresh air. Who knows whether Hong Kong voters (directors in particular) will prefer To Kei Fung's LIFE WITHOUT PRINCIPLE (DUET MING GUM). Director To says that this film is his personal favorite. Taking more than three years to make, the film truly has taken its toll on him. LIFE gives Lau Ching Wan a Best Actor nomination, Lo Hoi Pang a Best Supporting Actor nomination and So Hung Shuen a Best Supporting Actress nomination. As for LET THE BULLETS FLY, it also receives Best Picture, Director, Supporting Actress (Carina Lau Ka Ling) and Actor (Jiang Wen and Ge You) nominations. LIFE and LET on April 15 will be in quite a rivalry. Among Best Actor nominees are two for Lau Ching Wan (LIFE WITHOUT PRINCIPLE and OVERHEARD 2), two LET THE BULLETS FLY actors (Jiang Wen and Ge You), and A SIMPLE LIFE's Andy Lau Tak Wa. Some say that Mainland actors are at more of a disadvantage (voters are from Hong Kong), so this year's Best Actor "should be" Lau's. With Lau Tak Wa's star power playing A SIMPLE LIFE's Roger is not easy at all. Ching Wan on the hand other is in command of his OVERHEARD 2 performance. The Film Critic Society likes LIFE WITHOUT PRINCIPLE's Ching Wan, "Three Legged Leopard" (Lau Ching Wan's LIFE WITHOUT PRINCIPLE character) should be the favorite. Best Actress seems to be within the reach of A SIMPLE LIFE's Deanie Ip Tak Han. Since her success at the Venice Film Festival, Ip Tak Han has been very "busy" and "almost numb from accepting awards". In the film industry like other industries, as long as you do not leave you would always have a chance unless you feel "no regret in this life" and can gladly "retire". That is another class entirely. - TIN LIK 3. APPLE DAILY, FEBRUARY 11 2012, ELECTRIC FILM ROAD ONE NATION, TWO CITIES: TRAGIC SONG OF SEARCHING FOR ROOTS Cheung King Wai excels in making documentary, focusing on human emotion as a start for every story. KJ is about a music prodigy, ALL'S RIGHT WITH THE WORLD's story revolves around a group of people on comprehensive social security assistance, his recent work ONE NATION, TWO CITIES concentrates on the Hong Kong residence issue of Hong Kong people's children in the Mainland. The cameras reflects everything that is seen and heart like reality. Under his lenses his films have no so-called locust people, double non or exceptional genius, but they have actual flesh and blood and what happen to them. "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times." Two standards are in effect in one place. While enjoying the fruit of the Mainland economy, Hong KOng people also suffer the flood of comrades who with their newfound wealth come to shop in Hong Kong and settle down, double non pregnant women also come to rob resources. In the eyes of Hong Kong people, they are even described as locust. Is this the fact? Fighting For Hong Kong Right To Abode Director Cheung Wai King in the most recently completed documentary ONE NATION, TWO CITIES told the story with his cameras as he hoped to dissect without preference or bias the beginning and the end as well as the value of Mainlanders. Cheung Wai King spent five years as he started from 2006 to 2011 traced Quanzhou woman Axue's adventure of finding her root and getting back her identity. Cheung King Wai during an interview revealed that he has always been interested in people. He said, "Even when I took pictures I liked to shoot people. People are the bases of society. Several people form a family, families form a village, which in turn becomes a town. I am just going back to the basic structure." This time he starts with the story of a Mainland woman Axue, whose parents are both from Hong Kong but she does not have Hong Kong residence status. Cheung King Wai said, "The making this story starts with the production of another film ALL'S RIGHT WITH THE WORLD, because I wanted to make several stories about comprehensive social security assistance I met her. I thought she was well worth making a story about." Abandoned Children Policy Back then when Axue's parents successfully applied for immigration to Hong Kong, due to the abandoned children policy the eight year old had to remain at her hometown. Cheung King Wai added, "Axue is 38 this year. Several months ago she finally got her Hong Kong identification card. The so-called abandoned children is you have to leave a kid at home. When you got to Hong Kong you send money back to help the people back home, which leads to the early right to abode in Hong Kong. I don't want to examine the politics, I want to extend to the issue of family from people." Cheung King Wai said that ONE was a story about a woman who spent most of her life to fight to come to Hong Kong. Ironically when she found her own identity, her husband in Quanzhou due to a third party divorced Axue. Cheung Wai King hoped through the documentary Hong Kong people could examine their own identity. He said, "Under One Nation, Two Systems, are we in the end Hong Kong people or Chinese, how Hong Kong people recognize their own identity in the midst. It's not as simple as you rise the national flag and sing the national anthem then you are Chinese. Thus in the end of this movie Axue brought his son and carried her daughter in search of her ancestor's graves." Director Cheung King Wai in 2009 with KJ won three Golden Horse Awards including Best Documentary, Best Editing, and Best Sound Effects. Due to his fame scripts flooded in but he turned them down. The biggest reason was that was not his intent. When he has nothing more to ask for his class is naturally higher. He said, "Since I don't have much confidence that I can make the movies good, I might as well not make them. Right now I can make subjects that I like, and work the jobs that I like. Currently I just make enough to spend, the most important is my materialistic need isn't that high." Lovable Hong Kong Cheung King Wai feels now is the age of big movies, in the Mainland in particular. I WISH I KNEW, a movie from someone as strong as the Golden Lion Prize winner Jia Zhangke, could not find a cinema for its release. Meanwhile he still had cinemas that are willing to schedule his movie release, which proved that Hong Kong is still a very lovable city. He said, "At first this proves Hong Kong can tolerate movies with different voices and different position." Warlord Lam is not a leader of great vision, but having a patriotic heart, stands firm in his own beliefs, despite the several solicitations and temptations from Japan. The only ‘paradise’ within the region is ‘Lucky Town’, the one place where no one dared to attack. Rumors abound that this place is cursed, for whenever anyone attempted to invade Lucky Town, they would disappear and vanish without a trace. In reality, there are seven kung fu masters who have retreated into the shadows and resided here. They are Manysons Madonna and Madonhung, the owners of a steamed bread shop Nam Mor Bing, the Taoist priest Horny Four, the tailor Little Trumpet, the cosmetic salesman and Mamasan Maggie, the brothel owner. To consolidate his power under a new regime, the Emperor continues to use the Guillotines to persecute the conquered Han Chinese in a reign of terror and oppression. Led by master fighter Leng, the top ranked guillotine squad consists of five young warriors: Mu, San, Tai, Hutu and Buka. Serving the Qing Court unquestioningly, they have never failed in 348 missions to eliminate their targets. But their success has made them arrogant and complacent. Their next mission is to eliminate Wolf and his Shepherd gang. During the operation, the squad manages to trap Wolf. Just as they are about to execute him, the squad commander orders that he be captured alive. He secretly plans to use Wolf as a pawn in his bid for power. Not every love story is a fairy tale. After a dramatic wedding feast, unusual love stories unfold towards unexpected endings: a brother and sister in love caught by the mother, a married painter falls for his young life drawing model of same sex, an intimacy between a dance school teacher and his wealthy but senior student, a lesbian couple of which one has role-play paranoid, a dreadful love triangle ending with the girl being beheaded… "Love Actually…Sucks!" celebrates love that no one care but real, for life is love, love as it is. [ PHILADELPHIA QFEST ] Taking inspiration from six different court cases involving crimes of the heart, Scud examines the intense, often self-destructive sexual longings among several well-to-do young Hong Kong residents – gay, lesbian and straight. The film opens with the most scandalous wedding reception ever put on film: a young couple’s marriage ends (in the most dramatic fashion) before it begins. There is the 30-ish married gym instructor who trolls the active bathroom scene for young flesh; a lesbian couple with roleplay issues; a dance instructor who becomes the object of attraction to his much older student; a married painter who falls for his male model; a brother and sister who take family togetherness a bit too literally; and a young man who becomes increasingly deranged until he takes his love interest problems into his own hands. In Scud’s world, every love story is a fairy tale – but here the stories are sexual and troubling. Overall, a complex, sensual and compelling film. Jang Hun started out as an assistant director to Kim Ki-Duk, but with his first film, Rough Cut, he established himself as Korea’s answer to Steven Soderbergh: a director making big budget movies with an independent sensibility. Rough Cut, and Secret Reunion, The Frontline have all become massive box office hits without making an compromises or talking down to their audiences. To round out the trio of movies in this mini-retrospective, we’re including White Night, another crime film that transforms itself into something dark, glittering and truly amazing. Tuesday, February 28, 2012 @ 7pm WHITE NIGHT (2009, 135 minutes, North American Premiere) White Night is a sprawling, evil epic about an unsolved crime that happened 14 years previously that has spilled its poison out over the subsequent years. Based on a best-selling Japanese novel, and featuring a riveting performance by Go Soo, star of The Frontline, director Park Shin-Woo turns this movie into a slick, beautifully realized film about true evil, as a detective refuses to let go of this single case, instead insisting on following its threads for years no matter where they lead. And where they lead is dark and truly shocking. This hit film has been called the best Korean film of 2009 by several critics and once you’ve seen it, it’s hard to forget. Tribeca Cinemas: 54 Varick Street, on the corner of Canal Street, one block from the A, C, E and 1 train Canal Street stops. Price? Free. All seating is first-come, first serve basis.
