MISCELLANEOUS * (2012/01/23) Chrissie Chau Sau Na two nights ago went to the Victoria Park Chinese New Year Fair to give away her film 3D BAUHINIA WOMAN (3D JI GAING HUP) poster and made the already crowded Victoria Park even more crowded. Speaking of her performance last year, Sister Na was satisfied with her 7 figures and hoped that next year films would keep on coming, smooth business and a Hong Kong store for her lingerie business. As for the prediction of a wedding with her boyfriend Avis Chen Wai Sing, Sister Na had no intention of getting married but would pay her boyfriend's parents a Lunar New Year visit. Recently her co-star Alex Fong Lik Sun was caught with prostitute flyers in his luggage. Sister Na had no idea. "I wouldn't go to his room, but I have seen those posters at the hotel." As for junior colleagues Jeana Ho Pui Yu and Iris Chung Choi Yi's bathroom fight, Sister Na hoped that they would remain harmonious for the sake of money and wait until this year to resolve their issues. * (2012/01/22) Nicholas Tse Ting Fung and Jay Chou (Chow Kit Lun) gave their all in the Emperor Motion Picture THE VIRAL FACTOR (YIK JIN) and their hard work paid off! Yesterday it opened and already made 400,000 at the box office before noon as its admission rate was over 90%. With the three day advanced screening it made 1.2 million, a conservative estimate of the cumulative box office so far it might already have broken the 2 million mark. It even was on top of the Malaysia box office and the top Chinese film in Singapore. Since other Lunar New Year films I LOVE HONG KONG 2012 (2012 NGOR OI HK HEI SEUNG GA HEI) made 440,000 and ALL'S WELL ENDS WELL 2012 (BAK SING PO HEI) made 400,000, the victory was overwhelming. Director Dante Lam Chiu Yin honestly said that he was satisfied with the performance so far but he remained nervous. Yesterday he even stayed by his computer to "check numbers". "Although the Mainland box office is very important, Hong Kong ultimately is my home. Losing would be unreasonable." Ting Fung earlier even boasted that he wanted to challenge the Sky100 outer wall. Lam Chiu Yin said that after the film's box office exceeded 10 million, he would begin to plan the sequel. In addition, a self proclaimed Chow Kit Lun fan posted on Lam Chiu Yin's microblog. The fan bought a ticket to THE VIRAL FACTOR in the Mainland, but the ticket that came out was for THE FLOWERS OF WAR. The worker even changed the title with a pen, which upset her very much. Lam Chiu Yin responded, "Actually such situations are often heard of. I really don't know where the box office would go. If you ask me of course I am worried about its effects. Hopefully the authority will focus some attention to this." * (2012/01/22) Julian Cheung Chi Lam two nights ago attended an online radio program. After the Lunar New Year Cheung Chi Lam and Annie Liu (Lau Sum Yau) will work on Patrick Kong (Yip Lim Sum)'s film TIN SUN OI CHING KONG (NATURAL BORN LOVE FANATIC). He pointed out that this will be a purely Hong Kong film. Hopefully everyone will be supportive. * (2012/01/21) The Lunar New Year film I LOVE HONG KONG 2012 (2012 NGOR OI HK HEI SEUNG GA HEI) premiere took place last night. Over 80 actors were on hand. To match the theme of "joy upon joy", actors Eric Tsang Chi Wai, Teresa Mo Shun Kwan, Bosco Wong Chung Chak, Samantha Ko Hoi Ning and others all appeared in Chinese wedding costumes. Chi Wai even announced the good news that yesterday the single show box office was 220,000, beating ALL'S WELL ENDS WELL 2012 (BAK SING PO HEI)'s 120,000. The actors walked the red carpet as the event arranged for lion and dragon dances. Chi Wai said that everyone was very happy after putting Chinese wedding costumes. In the past two years, Chi Wai's Lunar New Year films have defeated Raymond Wong Pak Ming's. Was he confident this year? Chi Wai admitted, "Wong Pak Ming's new film has a stronger cast, but our friendship comes first. I hope everyone will do well." This year did he invite Wong Pak Ming to the premiere? Chi Wai said that the first year they went to the premiere and became the media focus. Later Wong Pak Ming's daughter yelled at him for promoting for others. Earlier ALL'S WELL ENDS WELL 2012 held its premiere. When he found out the response was decent, he sent a text message to congratulate him. However he did not reply yet. Wong Chung Chak and Denise Ho Wan Si in the film played a couple and even had a kiss scene. Ho Wan Si did not attend so Ko Hoi Ning appeared with Bosco. Was the switch much better for Bosco? He said that to each her own. He even praised Ho Wan Si's mouth was hot and this kiss was memorable. It was her special move. Bosco pointed out that during the kiss scene Ho Wan Si stuck to his mouth tightly and he had no way to react. He joked that he did not mind being called short tongued, as long as his life was not short then he was fine. However the most wrong was for Myolie Wu Hung Yi to reveal that. Zhang Xinyu wore a Chinese wedding gown for the first time. Did she want to get married? She admitted that she has not thought about it. Her boyfriend Ron Ng Cheuk Hei has not proposed to her yet either. Even if he did she would not agree because her career just started. She felt that girls should have careers. However she would like to wed before age 30. Recently Zhang Xinyu was reported as an avid smoker and once worked at a night club. She thought those reporters were very funny and exaggerated. The photos were from when she went to a karaoke box with friends when she was 19. She did not smoke and she was young then, she thought holding a cigarette would look cool. She also clarified that she never worked at a night spot. "Is that possible? Before getting into the business my parents raised me, now I can rely on myself." Elaine Lok Yi Ling was asked why Ng Cheuk Hei was not invited. Ms. Lok said that Ng Cheuk Hei was working and was not a part of this film. He was not avoiding Zhang Xinyu. * (2012/01/21) Zhang Xinyu two nights ago promoted her Lunar New Year film I LOVE HONG KONG 2012 (2012 NGOR OI HK HEI SEUNG GA HEI) on Now with Natalie Meng Yao, Susan Shaw Yam Yam and Stanley Fung Shui Fan. Zhang Xinyu said that she would attend last night's premiere then immediately returned to work in Beijing. Thus she would not have time to meet with boyfriend Ron Ng Cheuk Hei. Did Xinyu ask Ng Cheuk Hei to attend the premiere? She said that he was busy with a series. Reporters said that she had a good idea of where her boyfriend was. She said no, but she believed that if he was free he would support TVB. Xinyu earlier came to Hong Kong and said that she did not see Ng Cheuk Hei but later her vehicle was found at Ng Chuek Hei's home. She said that she was not in the vehicle. With the Lunar New Year on the way, would she pay Ng Cheuk Hei's parents a Lunar New Year visit? She said that she has not seen his parents and she would have to work in Beijing. Meng Yao hoped to become a producer this year and would invest several million on movies. However she denied that her husband financed her. She also planned to buy a home. Did her husband agree with her work? Meng Yao said that her husband could not control her, as she liked freedom too much. No one could stop her when she wanted to do something. Was she afraid that it would affect their relationship? She said that husband and wife should trust each other, and not let having less time together affect their relationship. She also said that the team would give her one day off a week to go home and be with her child. In addition, Bosco Wong Chung Chak did not attend two nights ago. Director Wilson Chin Kwok Wai was asked whether he could not promote on another station. Chin Kwok Wai said there was no overlap, Wong Chung Chak was just busy with a series. He said that to promote the film, all actors would be interviewed in Cantonese on other television stations. * (2012/01/21) The film NEW PERFECT TWO (SUN TIN SUN YUT DUI) two nights ago held its Taipei premiere. Director Kevin Chu Yen Ping led stars Vic Chou Yu Man, Ella and Benny (Siu Siu Bun) in attendance. Many artists came to show their support, like Vivian Hsu (Tsui Yeuk Suen), Terri Kwan Wing, Tsang Bo Yi, Joseph Chang Hau Huen and others. Earlier Tsui Yeuk Suen announced the passing of her grandfather. Two nights ago she was dressed in black and wore sunglasses. Reporters consoled her but she did not respond before leaving. In the poster, Benny was on Jai Jai's shoulders. Two nights ago reporters asked Benny to do it again, but Benny was afraid of heights and declined. Later with everyone's encouragement Benny agreed. This was Ella's first female lead role. Did she also invited her friends? She admitted that she hoped all of her friends would show their support and thanked fans for booking shows. As for Hebe and Selina, she pointed out that Hebe was not in Taiwan. For Selina's safety, she would ask the director to provide a super VIP room for her to enjoy the film in. Chu Yen Ping agreed. Did Jai Jai invited his fellow F4 members? Jai Jai said that he made brief contact with the other three. Ken Chu Hau Tin was in Hengdian, Jerry Yan (Yin Sing Yuk) was overseas, and Vanness Wu (Ng Kin Ho) had to work. However Ng Kin Ho was with Jay Chou (Chow Kit Lun) earlier? Jai Jai did not mind. "Because with good films, good friends like us should have this kind of spirit and stand up for each other." Jai Jai worked with Benny for the first time. Was he very patient with children ordinarily? Jai Jai said in the film he not necessarily would, only with Benny he was particularly patient because he was a child. Would he make Benny his god son? Jai Jai said that they were better off as sworn brothers. With the impending Lunar New Year, Ella will be at home with her family. Every year she would spend it in Taiwan. This year she will see NEW PERFECT TWO with her parents. * (2012/01/20) Chow Yun Fat after completing the Mainland director Zhao Linshan directed BRONZE SPARROW PAVILION in Beijing recently returned to Hong Kong to rest. In April he will head to Shanghai for the Andrew Lau Wai Keung produced, Wong Jing directed film DAI SEUNG HOI (GRAND SHANGHAI). Other possible cast members will include Huang Xiaoming and Shu Qi. The film will take place during the Shanghai French Concession Era, the story will be about a Shanghai mob family. Two hunks will play two big family leaders who for the benefits of their families begin a battle of wits. Wong Jing since working with Fat Gor in 1989 on GOD OF GAMBLERS' RETURN (DOH SUN 2) has not worked with him for 23 years. Wong Jing has always been looking for a suitable subject to work with Fat Gor on again. Finally he attracted Fat Gor with DAI's exciting script. In preparation for this film, Wong Jing spent a lot of time on research and script. After Fat Gor he began to look for other important characters. He thought the Mainland version "Hui Man Keung" Huang Xiaoming should be rather interesting with Fat Gor. Since they have not worked together before, with them playing two Shanghai Grand Era big shots would definitely be fresh to viewers. Fat Gor yesterday had tea with several fellow photography fanatics when reporters asked him whether he has already accepted Wong Jing's new film. He said, "How do you know! We are in negotiation, the script is pretty attractive to me." How did he feel about two generations of Hui Man Keung working together? He said, "Huang Xiaoming is pretty good! In the movie we won't be father and son, I think we will be rivals." Wong Jing yesterday admitted that he was actively planning this film. He said, "Right now everything is in preparation. Indeed I want to bring two generations Hui Man Keung together for a Grand Shanghai era film, but I am not remaking THE BUND (SEUNG HOI TAN). Let's talk about the details when it is more mature!" * (2012/01/20) The Miriam Yeung Chin Wa and Shawn Yue Man Lok starred new film LOVE IN THE BUFF (CHUN GIU YU JI MING) has already been scheduled for a March release. They earlier shot a Lunar New Year special and even wrote Spring banners for the holiday. Last year Lok Jai wrote "hundred shot hundred hit" to wish for Chin Wa's pregnancy in advance. This year Chin Wa who confirmed the pregnancy said that she had to return the favor with "Married With Child" for Lok Jai, but Lok Jai heard about this "gift" and got a headache right away. Then Lok Jai wrote "300 million box office" to wish for their new film to be a big hit. Chin Wa still did not yield and planned to return her fortune. Lok Jai immediately touched Chin Wa's belly and said, "Don't be like Mommy, she's bad!" Finally Chin Wa wrote "Spring Wind Fulfills Wishes" and said to Lok Jai, "Spring Wind Fulfills Wishes means whatever you want you get, which is the most important to men!" * (2012/01/20) Raymond Wong Pak Ming, Louis Koo Tin Lok and Kelly Chen Wai Lam appeared on Cable Entertainment News Lunar New Year program and had a Lunar New Year meal with the anchors. Goo Jai even pan fried New Year cakes and turnip cakes. At first he was a little clumsy, burning a few pieces because he had the heat on too high. Later Kelly gave him some advice and he got more and more familiar. Speaking of their Lunar New Year family traditions, Goo Jai said that his family was very traditional. On the Lunar New Year's Eve they had to worship and bathe with pummelo leaves, on the Lunar New Year he had to say New Year greetings to his parents. On the Lunar 2nd they would have the first meal of the year and pick a lucky time for worship. The schedule was tighter than a production's. He continued, "Every year during the Lunar New Year visits, my relatives' children would play with me. If I made a wuxia film that year I was done for, everyone would treat me like I really knew kung fu, grab me and hit me." Kelly revealed that Shrimp Dumpling Kid already knew how to make the New Year greeting gesture but not how to say "Gung Hei Fat Choi" yet. She said it was almost time to teach him. Kelly also said that she would cut Shrimp Dumpling Kid's hair, but she was reluctant to cut it too short because long hair matched the shape of his face. For the child to sit still for the hair cut, Kelly had to use cartoons, books and even the vacuum cleaner because he did not like to see hair. Thus every time she cut his hair she would take two days. * (2012/01/20) Jay Chou (Chow Kit Lun)'s birthday was two days ago, which coincided with his new film THE VIRAL FACTOR (YIK JIN)'s Taipei premiere. He not only had the support of fans and friends like Vanness Wu (Ng Kin Ho) and Jaycee Chan (Fong Cho Ming) but also drove his NT$28 million Lamborghini birthday present to the venue. Cho Ming presented a gold yuanbao shaped cake to wish him a happy birthday. Chairman Chou earlier said that this film was the most toughest in his career. The host asked what kind of movie he definitely would not make? He said, "No running nose, this is important. Even if I cry I can't look too ugly. So the most tragic scene in the film is left for Ting Fung. (Did you compete with Ting Fung?) Absolutely not. I feel that he isn't a musician, but a professional actor. I am still a musician. (Do you admit acting in terms of acting?) Of course, he's a Best Actor." The event arranged for a girl of mixed heritage to present flowers to Chairman Chou, seemingly hinting at his rumored girlfriend Hannah Quinlivan (Kwun Ling). Chairman Chou also humorously responded, "Someone has bad intention. (Why isn't Kwun Ling here, has the relationship soured?) Too many people are here today, if not for the paparazzi, many friends would be able to come and see my movie." Hong Kong Film Award winning director Dante Lam Chiu Yin praised Nicholas Tse Ting Fung who during the shoot ran into marital problems. He said, "I remember at the time I wanted to take Ting Fung to dinner and see if I could help him relieve some stress. I didn't expect him to take the initiative and took me to dinner. He even talked a lot. I asked Ting Fung if he wanted to rest, he said if he was asked to stop he might think even more. He even asked for more scenes. He said that he wanted to be focus on work all the time so he would not have any time to think about anything else." * (2012/01/20) Donnie Yen Chi Tan, Jing Tian, Zhao Wenzhou, Zhang Hanyu and director Clarence Ford (Fok Yiu Leung) yesterday attended the action film DUT SHU SUN FUN (SPECIAL IDENTITY)'s production start press conference in Beijing. Chi Tan will even be the film's producer and action director. The event displayed a highlight of Chi Tan's classic action scenes so the live audience could experience "Yen Kung Fu" dominance. Chi Tan hoped to create an action film classic in "triple identities". This would be Chi Tan and Zhao Wenzhou's first collaboration. They admired each other and even looked forward to their fight scene in the film. Chi Tan stated that he would as the "action director" design several "brilliant" fight scene for him and Zhao Wenzhou so viewers would have fun. As the producer, he joked that "producer" actually was "hard work" (homonym). He actually would learn from director Fok Yiu Leung and participated in the shoot like an apprentice. Golden Horse Award winning Best Actor Zhang Hanyu has always appeared in a courageous and cool tough guy image and rarely made action films. Working with two kung fu superstars Chi Tan and Zhao Wenzhou, he looked forward to this film the most this year. As for fight scene break through, Zhang Hanyu said that he would "pick up a few tricks" and revealed that he has already begun his action training. This time has been very tough but he looked forward to the fight scenes that Chi Tan would arrange for him. * (2012/01/19) The Emperor Motion Picture THE GREAT MAGICIAN (DAI MOR SHOOK SI) after a week in release made over 90 million. Two days ago a celebration was held in Beijing. Guest star Daniel Wu (Ng Yin Cho), director Derek Yee Tung sing and Bona boss Yu Dong appeared. Yu Dong even stated that on the 17th the film will pass 100 million. Ng Yin Cho joked that every time he worked with Yee TUng Sing he was either "maimed or worse". Even his wife Lisa S. was suspicious. Yee Tung Sing joked, "Maybe I am subconsciously jealous of Ng Yin Cho!" In addition, Ng Yin Cho revealed at the event that his new company with Stephen Fung Tak Lun successfully convinced Yee Tung Sing to make a racing movie. At the same time Yee Tung Sing's racing script that has been set aside for almost 10 years now is back in play. * (2012/01/19) The Nicholas Tse Ting Fung, Jay Chou (Chow Kit Lun) and Lin Peng starred film THE VIRAL FACTOR (YIK JIN) received Malay police department's flight team support as they shot at the Police flight team headquarter and borrowed several helicopters and pilots. They even had 7 police officers who personally performed. Ting Fung and Chairman Chou had to perform a series of stunts on the helicopter. Chairman Chou was frightened when the helicopter suddenly flew on its side. Because at the time he did not put on his seat belt and the cockpit door was not closed, if he did not tightly hold on he definitely would have been flying. Ting Fung pointed out that when he helped Lin Peng to the helicopter he almost had an accident and flew out of the helicopter. Lin Peng said, "The three of us were in the helicopter and had to mind our safety while delivery our lines and act. At the time the helicopter rolled on its side, something fell and was about to fly out, I quickly fixed it. When the helicopter went sideways, I was careless and was tossed up. Luckily Chairman Chou and Ting Fung grabbed me fast!" In addition, director Dante Lam Chiu Yin revealed that Tse Ting Fung in a crying scene could not stop crying, perhaps he had too much suppressed that had to be released. Chow Kit Lun said that he was 33, people could call him brother but not uncle. * (2012/01/19) ROMANCING IN THIN AIR (GO HOI BUT JI LUEN II) will open on February 9. Louis Koo Tin Lok and Sammi Cheng Sau Man earlier already began a series of promotion and shot Lunar New Year photos to wish everyone good health in the Lunar New Year. Goo Jai and Sammi have been busy at work so they would take the Lunar New Year off to rest or to be with their families. Goo Jai and Sammi earlier shot the promotional photos. As soon as they saw the mini lion head and the big head Buddha props they were very excited. They immediately performed a lion dance for fun. When asked whether they will leave Hong Kong to avoid the Lunar New Year, Goo Jai joked, "It's not like I owe people money, I don't have to avoid them. Actually normally I am really too busy. On (this) New Year I will have a rare day off so most likely I will be at home and spend it with my family." Sammi also said, "I too will mostly likely be at home. From the Lunar 1st to 3rd I will keep eating to gain weight, because on the Lunar 5th I will have to fly to work elsewhere." Will they gamble on the Lunar New Year? Goo Jai said, "At my home it's truly very infrequent because since childhood I thought the sound of mahjong was quite disturbing." Sammi pointed out that if her mother asked she would play mahjong but only for a few rounds at most. * (2012/01/19) Deanie Ip Tak Han and Andy Lau Tak Wa earlier appeared on a TVB Entertainment News channel interview with anchor Luisa Lai Chi San. Ip Tak Han and Lau Tak Wa with the film A SIMPLE LIFE (TOH JEH) received the 48th Golden Horse Award for Best Actress and Best Actor. Sister Deanie admitted that she was very excited. She pointed out that when she won the audience's applause was endless. At first she thought the boss (Wa Jai) spent a lot of money on audience applause to create the atmosphere. Later she realized that this film received the foreign audience's recognition. The film talked about the subject of life and death. Sister Deanie supported euthanasia very much and hoped human could leave this world with dignity. Wa Jai pointed out that everyone has to experience death. He urged everyone not to take their lives lightly. After making this film, he understood the moral of loving while there was time and should care more about elders. During the interview, they kept trading compliments. Sister Deanie said Wa Jai was very perfect, someone who respected himself and also kept improving himself. Wa Jai also praised her tolerant personality to be even better than before, from her he has learned a lot about life. Speaking of Wa Jai's impending fatherhood, Sister Deanie pointed out that that day Wa Jai personally called to give her the good news. She could not have been happier, but because she was in a crowd she could not be too excited. She only asked him to be careful. After getting home she immediately screamed, "Yeah". She also pointed out that Wa Jai would definitely be a kind father and spoil the child. Wa Jai said that he was very nervous and would spend more time with his family. * (2012/01/19) Trendy mother Kelly Chen Wai Lam in ALL'S WELL ENDS WELL 2012 (BAK SING PO HEI) played a photographer. Because it was her first comedy and the character had potential, she thought it was a lot of fun. Kelly in the film in order to coax Louis Koo Tin Lok into being her nude model was dressed like Lara Croft in one moment and a beer girl in another. Because Kelly was already pregnant during the shoot, her belly began to grow. However she had to dress up so costumes had to have special arrangements. Kelly said, "After trying on all the costumes, no one realized that I was pregnant." Speaking of working together, Kelly pointed out that they truly set of a lot of spark. "In one scene, Goo Jai only wore nude shorts. I had to cover him up with my head while taking his pictures. It was both awkward and very funny. Seeing his body I really wanted to touch it, haha." In addition, Kelly will sing the film theme song HUG JOY (PO HEI). Kelly revealed that during its recording, "Mini Juicy Bun" was very excited as well. "During the recording 'Mini Juicy Bun' kept kicking me as if he heard the beat and wanted to dance. I hope he would be more active when he grows up and not to be too quiet. The best would be for him to like sports, kung fu would be good too." Because the theme song is about embrace, Kelly said that the person who she would like to embrace of course was Shrimp Dumpling Kid. Everyday she definitely would embrace him. As for her husband, she said that sometimes they would embrace at home for no specific reason, which felt very romantic. [ BLAH OF THE WEEK ] Columns, Reviews, Interviews 1. APPLE DAILY, JANUARY 22 2012, ELECTRIC FILM ROAD DENISE HO CELEBRATES THE NEW YEAR WITH ROTTEN GAGS Actually selling brand name handbags can make 200 million a month, much better than making movies, fighting and risking lives. However the gratification from making a movie cannot be compared to a handbag. Full of electric shadow charm movies still are many people's cups of tea. Even primarily a musician Denise Ho Wan Si in recently years has made more movies. First she made the Venice Film Festival competition film LIFE WITHOUT PRINCIPLE (DUET MING GUM) then the Lunar New Year film I LOVE HONG KONG 2012 (2012 NGOR OI HK HEI SEUNG GA HEI). Ah Si in the film even has a passionate kiss scene on the street with Bosco Wong Chung Chak. Ho Wan Si recently became "national treasure" Guo Jingjing? No, this year the Lunar New Year film I LOVE HONG KONG 2012 actors all transformed. Ah Si became "Guo Jingjing", Eric Tsang Chi Wai grew taller to be "Yao Ming", with Teresa Mo Shun Kwan's "Guo Mei Mei", Wong Chung Chak's "Lok Yi Nga", Susan Shaw Yam Yam's "Shen Chia-Yi" and others. The character name rotten gags alone were already cracking people up. This was Ah Si's second Lunar New Year film. In it she and Bosco even had a street kiss scene. Ah Si played a supermarket supervisor, a family with Stanley Fung Shui Fan, Mo Shun Kwan and Lok Wing and a couple with Bosco. However they mixed up their sexes in the film, with Bosco as the effeminate boyfriend and Ah Si as the extremely manly girlfriend. Senses A Knack For Comedy Ah Si said that she had a knack for comedy, only ordinarily she buried this talent. With so many super comedy actors this time, Ah Si boasted that she would not be stumped when others improvised. "Of course I wouldn't be, I am a comedy actor. In addition Chi Wai rarely improvised, I learned a lot from being around him. Ultimately they were the comedy actors when Hong Kong films were at their peak. Their performances had very individual styles. Working with Sister Mo was quite a fun. Among actresses she is in the top three of the funniest." In recent years Ah Si participated in many films and a play tour. Would she like to win a film award as a recognition? Ah Si said that she would not think much about it. "I would play every character well. Ultimately awards are about destiny and the entire movie, unlike singer which is very individual. Film is team work. I am a more immature actor, I have to slow accumulate more experience first." Hope To Run Into Good Directors Ah Si felt that now the first consideration of taking a film role was director more than character. If she ran into a director who she admired very much, she said that she would try any subject. She would seriously consider even homosexual and sexy performance. Ah Si said, "Like Director (Ann) Hui On Wa, she shoots very ordinary and everyday life characters very well. Because I believe she is a very tasteful director, if she asks me to play a very sexy character and the character requires it, I would be willing. Of course I would have to think about full nudity. As from nudity I can try a lot of things. I really want to work with her as well." Ah Si felt that when an actor won a film award, half the credit belonged to the director. No matter how outstanding the actor's performance was, without the director's leadership with editing, guidance and other aspects, the actor definitely would not be able to display the potential. I LOVE HONG KONG 4 Major Scenes: Senior Version YOU ARE THE APPLE OF MY EYE The film YOU ARE THE APPLE OF MY EYE's fever has not subsided yet. I LOVE HONG KONG made fun of the classic scene from the film. Playing YOU's Shen Chia-Yi, when Shaw Yam Yam reunited with Fung Shui Fan they thought of what happened in their youth and regained their first love feeling. Scenes like YOU's Michelle Che nand Ko Chen-Tung's Kung Ming Lantern and standing punishments were not lacking. Kissing In Mongkok Wong Chung Chak mistook Ho Wan Si for pretending to be pregnant to force a wedding. Enraged he planned to break up with Ho wan Si. Finally they came to an understanding. After making up, the always effeminate and shy Wong Chung Chak manned up on the streets of Mongkok in front of over 100 onlookers and extras to kiss the manly Ho Wan Si. The scene was shocking. Women At War With higher education Mo Shun Kwan's classmates were all from wealthy families. She and Samantha Ko Hoi Ning often engaged in a battle of wits, but Mo Mo's husband Tsang Chi Wai came from a poor family. At a reunion, Ko HOi Ning won a bid for chi Wai to do something for her. Ko Hoi Ning wanted Chi Wai to talk bad about his wife. Clueless, Chi Wai exposed Mo Mo's flaws one by one and embarrassed her. Getting Scoffed At For Chasing Girls Lok Wing has always admired star Zhang Xinyu and even begins a tug of war with her wealthy businessman boyfriend William So Wing Hong. To cheer her up, Lok Wing risked sneaking into a party topless in a waiter disguise. He hoped to be able to win her heart, but Zhang Xinyu was unmoved. Instead So Wing Hong found out and tossed Lok Wing into the swimming pool. - LOK WA LING Fung Shui Fan, Shaw Yam Yam's Doomsday Kiss Fung Shui Fan and Shaw Yam Yam in I LOVE HONG KONG 2012 played happy rivals. In the film they kept playing with hit film YOU ARE THE APPLE OF MY EYE classic scenes, but the ending naturally was happy and of course included a kiss scene. Although Fung Shui fan had plenty of performance experience, he still felt embarrassed with kiss scenes. He said, "When I made movies I didn't seem to have this type of scenes. I don't know if this was still considered my first on screen kiss. Anything too intense I wouldn't do, because ultimately my age is up there. Even when I go to the movies I am afraid to see seniors making out." Taking Obvious Advantage Yet Sister Yam Yam was not embarrassed at all. "Obviously I am taking advantage of him. Why would I be embarrassed? This is a comedy, all the kiss scenes are very warm. I don't feel anyone would have aroused from watching them." Sister Yam yam in the film played YOU's Shen Chia-Yi. She said that because of the fever lately this name was used. Speaking of YOU, Fung Shui Fan who lived in Taiwan had no idea at all and anti climatically said that he has not seen this film. I LOVE HONG KONG's story was related to the 2012 doomsday prophecy. Fung Shui Fan believed that it existed. "The Earth is a rock, something would happen one day. If the doomsday is real anything you do is useless. Ultimately whatever you want to do you should do, don't want until you are about to die." Sister Yam Yam said, "I am direct, I would say whether I like it or not right away. Why wait until the end of the world? I haven't planned on what I would do then, planning is useless because by then you might not be able to follow the plan. Everyday you have to cherish and have gratitude." - LEE PUI YU Synopsis: Love Has To Be In Time I LOVE HONG KONG is about the father Kwok Ching led family. MING PAO DAILY, JANUARY 22 2012, FILM WORDS CITY MASSACRE TRAGIC BATTLE IS NOT AS FUN AS ANIMATION FOR THE LUNAR NEW YEAR With the Chinese New year, as usual Chinese Lunar New Year films flood in even though the highest grossing may not be Chinese films. The Year of the Dragon Lunar New Year period in Hong Kong is no exception, as it has more holiday Chinese films than foreign films. Now the Hong Kong film market only has this slot when several Chinese films are released simultaneously in the entire years. Other periods have more foreign films, which is drastically different from in the "previous life" when Hong Kong film was thriving and productive and occupied the most share of any period. Another difference is previously Lunar New Year film subjects are joy for the entire family, now they have no taboo. However, the biggest investment of this period, the international class production domestically produced Lunar New Year film THE FLOWERS OF WAR's subject is the national tragedy and shame of Nanjing Massacre. Another Hong Kong director made international blockbuster THE VIRAL FACTOR (YIK JIN) also has a high body count and very tragic. I personally was not comfortable with watching them. The European and American markets during the holidays seemingly would not do this, perhaps only the Chinese world today would use bloody tragic films to "celebrate" the biggest Chinese holiday? THE FLOWERS OF WAR Displays The Best And The Worst Of Mainstream National Films Honestly, I have always been afraid to watch movies about the Nanjing Massacre. Yet as a film critic I have to watch them. Over the years I toughed out the movies that I have seen. Now Mainland China's top director Zhang Yimou made THE FLOWERS OF WAR, the technique of which of course has quality. In addition top Hollywood star Christian Bale and international experts are hired to help, making the fall of Nanjing very explosive. The story is also very intense, even erotic and humorous. Over its two and a half hour run it not only has no dull scene but also does its best to add material. However it is still not a pleasing work. During the Japanese military's Nanjing Massacre, a group of church school female students and a group of brothel prostitutes hide in a certain Catholic Church. An American funeral home employee impersonated a priest and protected the ladies in danger. Zhang Yimou excels in "creating drama". This film is full of violence, sex and melodrama. It very internationally features English as its primary language, with Japanese, Mandarin and Su Zhe dialects (once again, Chinese film cannot be all called Chinese language films). The problem is making a national tragedy into an entertainment gimmick, not to mention taking the chance to sell something superficial and let some prostitutes naively and stupidly do something that is harmful to themselves and others. Finally honoring the prostitutes' sacrifice as they substitute themselves for the female students to comfort the Japanese military is also excessively contrived. Overall the entire film has many places that seem to make sense but does not, like the female students seem to be very lucky to have the prostitutes to take their place, to take abuses for them. They are almost selfish and heartless. I feel if the screen writers arrange for the prostitutes and the "priest" to keep the sacrifice from the students it might have been better. Whether like it or not, you should watch THE FLOWERS OF WAR to know the largest mainstream national film's advantages and disadvantages. The most obvious advantage is the production conditions that are almost the best in the world. The gun fight scene is particularly outstanding -- that courageous sharpshooting KMT hero is actually exaggerated, but I think Zhang Yimou should be able to make even stronger police gun fight films and sharp shooting killer movies. In addition, Christian Bale, lead actress Ni Ni and the young men in the church also perform well. (Three out of five stars) THE VIRAL FACTOR Farfetched ALL'S OK As for the Dante Lam Chiu Yin directed THE VIRAL FACTOR (YIK JIN), it is a large scale international cops and robbers film that involves a world threatening virus conspiracy. With fights and explosions from the Middle East to America to Southeast Asia, the action is very ferocious. Unfortunately the story is beyond farfetched, Jay Chou (Chow Kit Lun) and Nicholas Tse Ting Fung plays cop and robber who coincidentally are brothers. The movie is made to be very tragic. The overall story is unconvincing and truly cannot be compared to Lam Chiu Yin's BEAST STALKER (JING YUN) and STOOL PIGEON (SIN YUN) that were completely shot in Hong Kong. (Two and a half out of five stars) Another two typical Hong Kong style Lunar New Year films maintain fun for the whole family happy ending format. Chan Hing Kar and Janet Chun Siu Chun directed ALL'S WELL ENDS WELL 2012 (BAK SING PO HEI) has the most stars. With more modern city romantic comedy feel, it touches a variety of professions like out of luck male and female singers (Donnie Yen Chi Tan, Sandra Ng Kwan Yu), construction worker and female photographer (Louis Koo Tin Lok, Kelly Chen Wai Lam), writer and a blind woman (Chapman To Man Jat, Lynn Xiong (Hung Doi Lam)), counterfeit father and daughter (Raymond Wong Pak Ming, Mini Yang Mi). The pairings are rich. The story inevitably is looking for drama to play out, the longer it goes on the more embarrassing it gets. Overall it is OK. (Two and a half out of five stars) Shaw TVB's I LOVE HONG KONG 2012 (2012 NGOR OI HK HEI SEUNG GA HEI) is rather outdated, veteran Stanley Fung Shui Fan is the lead as the stars play his children and their mates. The entire film is all over the place, the most interesting is near the end when Fung Shui Fan on his television news program makes a wonderful commentary. (Two out of five stars) KOKURIKOZAKA KARA Is Cute And Entertaining The Hayao Miyazaki planned, Goro Miyazaki directed Japanese animation has the most nostalgia. The high school romance is just secondary. Outstandingly it captures in detail the 60's simple lifestyle and school fun. The plot is the students teaming up to clean and preserve a "Latin culture" old building, which is drawn and described touchingly and realistically. This reality based cartoon has no fantasy at all, yet during the Lunar New Year it is the cutest and the most tasteful good movie. (Three and a half out of five stars) - SHEK KEI 3. TA KUNG PAO, JANUARY 22 2012, LIGHT SHADOW PATH EVERY ASPECT OF FILM INVESTMENT As Lunar New Year films are released one after another, many are big productions that cost over 80 million. If they cannot exceed 250 million (RMB) at the box office they would have a hard time with breaking even. Among them PLEASANT GOAT 4 deserves the most attention. This film costs over 10 million and has already passed 100 million at the box office in its first four days in release and its holding company Imagi's recent stock prices rocketed over 10%. PLEASANT GOAT is a rare Mainland brand name. Imagi successfully purchased this brand name from Toon Express Hong Kong, transitioned its company business from the abyss and displayed an impressive resurrection from failure. Actually, China's 1.4 billion population on average has only 1/20 of the U.S. movie attendance rate. Ticket prices also drastically differ, which make people feel that the China market has a lot of potential. Last year's box office was 13 billion, a rapid rise from 30% (from two years ago). Its potential is considered infinite. "The market is in the Mainland" is often heard from film professionals' mouths, yet overseas markets is also a target of concern for film professionals. If they can invade the Mainland market and be able to succeed overseas as well, do they not have the best of both worlds? Thus some want to work with Mainland studios to make English language films, which would have both Mainland distribution and overseas sales to achieve the beautiful "wish". Last year a company suggests purchasing half of a Hollywood film company to team up with a Mainland privately operated film company in an attempt to fulfill this "noble goal". The writer mentions this with a certain famous director. The director praises it to be the most brilliant idea, but the writer has a lot of reservations. As a non film company, its primary business is unrelated to film. It completely relies on the Mainland film company, the Mainland distribution and a Hollywood company to drive productions and overseas sales. This non film company's role is just a silent partner. Strangely, this company clearly states that it does not know film. It does not depend on the two aforementioned companies' know how to bring "gigantic opportunities" to its own future business growth. In other words, this company plays the investment role of a risk fund. Even if investment return is positive, its profit definitely is the lowest among the three companies. It is not a great strategy. The writer 20 years ago formed a company as a professional screen writer to make films and television and had a similar experience. The partners were a director, an actor, and a producer. Because the writer had a full time part, he could not write the script. However he was able to review scripts, edit trailers, set promotional strategies, etc. Finally, the director took a pay check, the actor and the producer were paid according to market prices. The writer was the only partner who was not on salary. When the movies lost money, all of the writer's investment vanished. The other partners' loss was minimal (and might have even made money). That non film company would face this situation. Luckily this company after several months was unable to raise the funding and set aside the plan, which was a good result nevertheless. - TIN LIK [ In Production Now/Soon ] Can : Dut Shu Sun Fun Lit : Special Identity d. Not every love story is a fairy tale. After a dramatic wedding feast, unusual love stories unfold towards unexpected endings: a brother and sister in love caught by the mother, a married painter falls for his young life drawing model of same sex, an intimacy between a dance school teacher and his wealthy but senior student, a lesbian couple of which one has role-play paranoid, a dreadful love triangle ending with the girl being beheaded… "Love Actually…Sucks!" celebrates love that no one care but real, for life is love, love as it is. [ PHILADELPHIA QFEST ] Taking inspiration from six different court cases involving crimes of the heart, Scud examines the intense, often self-destructive sexual longings among several well-to-do young Hong Kong residents – gay, lesbian and straight. The film opens with the most scandalous wedding reception ever put on film: a young couple’s marriage ends (in the most dramatic fashion) before it begins. There is the 30-ish married gym instructor who trolls the active bathroom scene for young flesh; a lesbian couple with roleplay issues; a dance instructor who becomes the object of attraction to his much older student; a married painter who falls for his male model; a brother and sister who take family togetherness a bit too literally; and a young man who becomes increasingly deranged until he takes his love interest problems into his own hands. In Scud’s world, every love story is a fairy tale – but here the stories are sexual and troubling. Overall, a complex, sensual and compelling film. The temporary peace was very quickly broken -- Japanese military stormed into the church and found female students. Soldiers who risked their lives in opposition opened fire at the final moment to save the female students and sacrificed themselves. Later, the Japanese military forced female students to perform at their celebration. Everyone knew that this was a road of no return. Female students were unwilling to be abused at the hands of the Japanese military and prepared to commit mass suicide. Prostitutes led by Yu Mo saved them. Finally, these 13 ladies of the night who ordinarily would be considered low class displayed the fearless Chinese heroism. Free. All seating is first-come, first served. Doors open at 6:30pm. UPCOMING MOVIES Series 1: Jang Hun Plus One! Jang Hun started out as an assistant director to Kim Ki-Duk, but with his first film, Rough Cut, he established himself as Korea’s answer to Steven Soderbergh: a director making big budget movies with an independent sensibility. Rough Cut, and Secret Reunion, The Frontline have all become massive box office hits without making an compromises or talking down to their audiences. To round out the trio of movies in this mini-retrospective, we’re including White Night, another crime film that transforms itself into something dark, glittering and truly amazing. Tuesday, February 28, 2012 @ 7pm WHITE NIGHT (2009, 135 minutes, North American Premiere) White Night is a sprawling, evil epic about an unsolved crime that happened 14 years previously that has spilled its poison out over the subsequent years. Based on a best-selling Japanese novel, and featuring a riveting performance by Go Soo, star of The Frontline, director Park Shin-Woo turns this movie into a slick, beautifully realized film about true evil, as a detective refuses to let go of this single case, instead insisting on following its threads for years no matter where they lead. And where they lead is dark and truly shocking. This hit film has been called the best Korean film of 2009 by several critics and once you’ve seen it, it’s hard to forget. Wednesday, February 15, 2012 @ 7pm SECRET REUNION (2010, 116 minutes) Two of Korea’s best actors face off in this blockbuster action flick that manages to be sly, subversive and really funny while delivering white knuckle thrills. Song Kang-Ho (The Host) is a South Korean secret agent who fumbles a sting operation on a North Korean spy. Pop star Gang Dong-Won (Haunters) is the North Korean assassin who has been embedded in the South. After the botched operation, both men are cut loose by their respective agencies and Song becomes a private eye, while Gang sinks into deep cover, trying to survive long enough to go home. Years later, they cross paths and what audiences are treated to is a buddy movie to end all buddy movies.
