Jeana pointed out that Dash who played her boyfriend asked her for help with his first kiss scene, but she pointed out that he had more actual experience than she did. Jeana also praised Mr. and Alex to be gentlemen and hoped that her future mate would be in a band and "ABC". * (2012/01/11) ROMANCING IN THIN AIR (GO HOI BUT JI LUEN II) will be released on Valentine's Day. Aside from Louis Koo Tin Lok and Sammi Cheng Sau Man, Gao Yuanyuan also guest starred as Koo Tin Lok's girlfriend. Yuanyuan and Goo Jai worked together last year on DON'T GO BREAKING MY HEART (DAN SUN NAM NUI). That time Yuanyuan chose Daniel Wu (Ng Yin Cho), this time in ROMANCING IN THIN AIR Yuanyaun played a runaway bride! During the shoot when Goo Jai proposed to Yunanyuan, Yuanyuan joked, "Last time he proposed to me in DON'T GO BREAKING MY HEART and I didn't agree. This time I agreed, but my fate with me was doomed. On the wedding day, my miner first love (Wang Baoqiang) successfully stole me away and embarrassed Goo Jai in front of everyone." Goo Jai joked that after Yuanyuan dumped him twice in a row, from now on whenever he saw her he would think of the words "eating lemon" (rejected). He truly thanked To Sir (Johnnie To Kei Fung) for the double impact. However, if not so his story with Sammi would not have started. On the day of the wedding shoot, Goo Jai was reminded of THE BUND and laughed. Goo Jai said that the wedding interruption was too classic. Overseas it happened in THE GRADUATE and in Hong Kong in THE BUND. He never imagined that one day he would work on one and be the victim at that. Yuanyuan during the shoot had to wear a low cut wedding gown, but Wang Baoqiang dragged her away in the crowd. She was afraid that her gown would be stepped on. How would Goo Jai react if it happened to him? He admitted that he had no idea. If the bride wanted to go with someone else, he could not get her back even if he wanted to. * (2012/01/11) Tony Leung Chiu Wai, Lau Ching Wan, Zhou Xun and Yan Ni starred in THE GREAT MAGICIAN (DAI MOR SHOOK SI). The film in a humorous way stated that as long as you believe and persist, dreams could come true. In a movie shoot scene, Ching Wan's third concubine Yan Ni was in a bubble bath. Ching Wan directed for the first in the film. At the director's chair Ching Wan had the director's power in the film. When asked when he would direct, Ching Wan humbly said that he did not have the talent for it. On the set, Yan Ni had a bubble bath scene. In the film a guy also took advantage of her in the bubble bath and her husband Ching Wan was steaming. Early in the shoot preparation in order to create the bubble effect the crew used a lot of soap. Yet because they used too much, Yan Ni almost drowned in the bubbles. Her call for help made the crew laugh as they rushed to save her from the bubbles. Ching Wan did not know whether to laugh or to cry. "THE GREAT MAGICIAN's set truly has crouching tiger hidden dragon, even the crew knew magic. I sat further away and saw more and more bubbles, in a flash they covered her." * (2012/01/10) The Jay Chou (Chow Kit Lun) and Nicholas Tse Ting Fung starred Emperor Motion Picture THE VIRAL FACTOR (YIK JIN) has successfully sold its North American rights as it will be released on over 100 screens there one day in advance. Director Dante Lam Chiu Yin said, "I am very happy because usually it would only be released on video. This time it is an official theatrical release! (Will you promote there with the team?) We will have to fly between Hong Kong, the Mainland, Taiwan, Singapore and Malaysia, regrettably our schedule won't allow it." Emperor will hold a premiere on the 18th in Taiwan and celebrate Jay's birthday. Jay in the past would take his birthday off but this year he made the exception to work to show how important THE VIRAL FACTOR was to him. What did Lam Chiu Yin plan to give as a birthday gift? He joked, "I already gave him the movie! It should be his turn to give me something." * (2012/01/10) The Donnie Yen Chi Tan, Kelly Chen Wai Lam and Louis Koo Tin Lok starred Lunar New Year film ALL'S WELL ENDS WELL 2012 (BAK SING PO HEI) in the middle of the month yesterday released character posters with its eight leads ad traditional Lunar New Year items. Yen Chi Tan had long hair and a humor look. The directors even revealed that Yen Chi Tan who always gave people a serious impression acted crazy in the film. Every time when they looked at playback they would be holding their bellies from laughing so hard. * (2012/01/10) Director Derek Yee Tung Sing two nights ago led Tony Leung Chiu Wai, Lau Ching Wan and Zhou Xun to the Beijing premiere of THE GREAT MAGICIAN (DAI MOR SHOOK SI). At the premiere, Tsui Hark, Soi Cheang Po Shui, Andrew Lin Hoi and Terence Yin (Wan Chi Wai) came in support. Over the two hours, over 1,000 viewers laughed from the beginning to the end. After watching they all praised this film was truly for the entire family. After the premiere, over 1,000 viewers from the community expressed their satisfaction as they often laughed and applauded; Some even counted that they laughed every three minutes or so. Viewers thought that GREAT on the foundation of entertainment would even be able to remain cultured without being rotten; Wai Jai's sorrowful mystery matched his Great Magician identity that was very handsome and humorous; Ching Wan as the villain warlord was extremely cute; Zhou Xun's performance was also very funny. * (2012/01/10) The Pang Ho Cheung directed comedy romance LOVE IN THE BUFF (CHUN GIU YU JI MING) will be released simultaneously in the Mainland and Hong Kong late March. This film continues the story of LOVE IN A PUFF (JI MING YU CHUN GIU). After Chun Giu and Ji Ming's instant romance their relationship cooled down rapidly due to personality issues. They even went to work in the Mainland on their own, both had "ideal mates" who appeared around them and made their romance even more complicated. This time popular Mainland actors Mini Yang Mi and Xu Zheng joined the cast as Ji Ming and Chun Giu's second choices. Currently pregnant, Chin Wa originally planned to be on her maternity leave. Yet due to the film's promotional period, she set aside plans to take time off and hoped to complete all the film promotional work in her limited capacity. Chin Wa pointed out that if her health would permit she would return work, including the film's March promotions in Hong Kong and the Mainland. Shawn Yue Man Lok said that if the film would have a third installment, it could directly say Chin Wa was with child and her baby would be able to guest star in its first film. Two versions of film posters have already been unveiled. Pang Ho Cheung leaned toward the Chun Giu and Ji Ming embrace posting and posted it online, which was retransmitted over 10,000 times, a strong first wave for the film promotion. * (2012/01/10) The 18th Hong Kong Film Critic Society yesterday announced its winners. Earlier winning Best Actress awards with A SIMPLE LIFE (TOH JEH) in Venice and at the Golden Horse Awards, Deanie Ip Tak Han again won Best Actress. Lau Ching Wan with LIFE WITHOUT PRINCIPLES (DUET MING GUM) won his third Society Award Best Actor Award. A SIMPLE LIFE at the same time won Best Picture. Jiang Wen with LET THE BULLETS FLY won Best Director, and Best Screenplay went to LIFE WITHOUT PRINCIPLES. Last year 57 films were officially released. Among Best Picture and Best Director, A SIMPLE LIFE, LIFE WITHOUT PRINCIPLES, FLYING SWORDS OF DRAGON GATE (LUNG MOON FEI GAP), OVERHEARD 2 (SIT TING FUNG WON 2), LET THE BULLETS FLY's competition was the strongest. Finally A SIMPLE LIFE won Best Picture and LET THE BULLETS FLY's Jiang Wen won Best Director by two votes more than FLYING SWORDS OF DRAGON GATE's Tsui Hark. OVERHEARD 2 and LIFE WITHOUT PRINCIPLE also had a fierce competition over Best Screenplay, finally LIFE WITHOUT PRINCIPLE's Milky Way creative team, Au Kin Yee and Ben Wong King Fai won. A SIMPLE LIFE's Ip Tak Han crushed EAST MEETS WEST 2011 (DONG SING SAI JAU 2011)'s Karen Mok Man Wai and FLYING SWORDS OF DRAGON GATE's Zhou Xun for Best Actress. Best Actor had Ching Wan in competition with himself. He finally with LIFE WITHOUT PRINCIPLE's small time hook by two vote beat his OVERHEARD 2 "Landlord Club" stock market elite Law Man Sun. This was also Ching Wan's third Hong Kong Film Critic Society Best Actor Award after HIGH ALERT (GO DOH GAI BEI) and LA BRASSIERE (JUET SAI HO BRA). Lau Ching Wan thanked the Film Critic Society, and Johnnie To Kei Fung for giving him such a challenging character. As an actor, while acting he of course hoped that it would be fun too. He said, "Director To next time you have a fun script, definitely save it for me!" Ip Tak Han again won with A SIMPLE LIFE. She said that any award was an encouragement; especially for a senior like her, an award was like a shot of confidence. She wished that all awards could bring investors the return that they should have. She wished director Ann Hui On Wa would be able to make movies that she believed in. Ip Tak Han also thanked the Hong Kong Film Critic Society and also Andy Lau Tak Wa and Hui On Wa's trust. To Kei Fung thanked the Film Critic Society. Milkyway creative team was responsible for writing this film. Since founding the Milky Way Image he has always hoped to give new comers more opportunities, cultivate more talent for the film industry and hope that everyone would work hard together. In addition, the Hong Kong Film Critic Society at the same time selected seven recommended films: LIFE WITHOUT PRINCIPLE, OVERHEARD 2, DON'T GO BREAKING MY HEART (DAN SUM NAM NUI), FLYING SWORDS OF DRAGON GATE (LUNG MOON FEI GAP), LET THE BULLETS FLY, WHITE VENGEANCE (HUNG MOON YIN), and BIG BLUE LAKE (DAI LAN WU). Attending actors included Alex Man Chi Leung, Fiona Sit Hoi Kei, Wen Chao, Sire Ma Choi and producer Paco Wong. Man Chi who has not shown his face in a long time was excited as he took pictures with people all over and had plenty to say. Man Chi said that he has not made a Hong Kong film in a long time. This time he was very happy to make this comedy and even made Chapman To Man Jat his disciple. This time Paco invited him to return to Hong Kong to perform and they did not discuss salary. Man Chi currently still has a clothing business in the Mainland. It has already overcome the tough times and did not close, but he believed its business would unlikely go higher. Would he return to TVB? Man Chi said that no one asked him. Reporters said that TVB salary was low and could not afford him. He joked, "This is a little closer to reality! (TVB only offers HK$10,000 per episode!) Ha? So much?" Man Chi said that he and TVB had a deep relationship and money would not be an issue. If he was asked to return home he definitely would. "Money isn't a problem, because I have it." With all the smiling he seemed to be excessively active. Man Chi still laughed and said, "I don't know why, after 50 I seem to be a kid again. Many people are asking me to make movies and commercials." Why did he give people the impression that he was a maniac? He said, "That's what people said! (You wrote big character posters!) That's my thing, it didn't affect others." Was he more easy going than before? Man Chi said, "I have always been, only people framed me and gave me this title. I don't have a magazine that I can strike back with." During the Lunar New Year, he will visit Europe with his wife and son. Sit Hoi Kei in the film played Man Chi's daughter. After this collaboration, she finally understood Man Chi was called "Drama King" and even made him her idol. Fiona also praised Man Chi was a very thoughtful elder. After working on this film, he gave every actor a commemorative card. Earlier Man Chi even reminded her to lower her head during photo opportunities because she did not look good when she extended her neck. Earlier she and Khalil Fong Datong went shopping for glasses. Fiona said that they happened to finish work together and shared the same ride, so they went shopping together. She stressed that she and Datong were just friends. Paco Wong said that this year he will make several movies. His company will also produce concerts. Reportedly Edmond Leung Hong Man's friends raised 4 million to free him from Golden Typhoon; Paco Wong said that was not true, but as a friend he definitely would support him. * (2012/01/09) Jeana Ho Pui Yu, DaDa Chen Jing, Shiga Lin Si Nga yesterday attended a LAN KWAI FONG 2 (HEI OI YEH PO 2) actor recruitment event at a Central bar. Chrissie Chau Sau Na's boyfriend Avis Chan Wai Sing, pseudo models Iris and Monna Lam were present as well. Jeana was once rumored to be at odds with elder colleague Chau Sau Na, but yesterday when she saw Chau's boyfriend Avis at the audition she was under his spell. "I didn't know that he would come. I was very surprised. Later I would give him more points, I am even persuading the director to give me scenes with him. (Bed scenes?) Not necessarily the bed, closet, sofa all work. This time I am not only a judge but also checking out high and handsome guys." Avis said that he already told his girlfriend. "Chrissie knows I am coming to the audition. We communicated, but I didn't dare to tell her about all the pretty girls here. (Are you worried that your girlfriend wouldn't like you making intimate scenes?) I don't care whether she likes it or not, I care more about who I am working with. (What about Jean?) It's work, the more familiar the better, communication would be easier. For the New Year I hope to travel with Chrissie, but she may not have time off." DaDa was no match for the younger girls. "I am not feeling well, my eye is infected. I really lack sleep, my body is sending out warning signals." * (2012/01/09) The 2011 JADE SOLID GOLD BEST TOP MUSIC AWARDS took place last night at the Tseung Kwan O Television City as the final report card of the music industry this year. Although the five major record labels have already resolved the royalty issues with TVB, they did not make it in time to have songs on the chart. As for the Asia Pacific Most Popular Male and Female Singers and the Most Popular Male and Female Singer awards, TVB's own Raymond Lam Fung won the Asia Pacific Most Popular Male Singer award for the third year in a row and with the song CHOK won the Solid Gold Gold Song award. Wong Yuen Chi surprisingly won her first Asia Pacific Most Popular Female Singer. Leo Ku Kui Ke won his fourth Most Popular Male Singer. The Most Popular Female Singer went to Joey Yung Cho yi for the seventh time. Joey this year won 14 awards at four award shows and defeated Eason Chan Yik Shun who won 12. Last night Eric Tsang Chi Wai, Amigo Chu Kin Bong, Christine Ng Wing Mei and the Grasshoppers were hosts. Among the five major record labels, Warner and Sony executives were on hand, but only 70 singers attended. Mainly Emperor held down the fort. Five major singers Eason Chan Yik Shun, Kay Tse On Kay and Hacken Lee Hak Kun remained without awards. The award show opened with a group of rookie singers and the Grasshopppers' performance, then immediately presented the first Solid Gold award to the Grasshoppers. Without five major singers, Pong Nan Yik Bong, Wong Cho Nam, Ken Hung Cheuk Lap and William Chan Wai Ting were all in the front row. Even Chan Wai Ting who only wrote one song won the Most Popular Creative Singer Bronze Prize. Asia Pacific Most Popular Hong Kong Male Singer went to Lam Fung for the third time as he defeated the earlier rumored winners of the Grasshoppers and Leo Ku Kui Ke. When Lam Fung was announced, Lady Ng could not help but screamed Chok King. He stated that the first time he won this award he forgot to thank many people. The most important was for him to thank a group of people who trusted him and gave him opportunities. He said, "I don't mind too much about how I feel, what I mind the most is the feeling that I give them." He also thanked TVB for cultivating him all along and thanked elders like Ng Yu. He also thanked all of his fans who never abandoned him. He also hoped that all the singers would be together again on the stage and perform better year after year. Asia Pacific Most Popular Female Singer went surprisingly to Ivana Wong Yuen Chi for the first time as she defeated the earlier rumored winner Joey Yung Cho Yi. When the host announced Wong Yuen Chi, she was stunned in the audience and said not to scare her and said to Gillian Chung Yun Tung who was next to her, "No way." She said that this was a great award. She had to calm down and think about what to say. Then tearfully she said that all along she put all her heart into making good music, from the first day in the business to today the seventh year. She has never thought about winning any major award. She wanted to thank people who encouraged her. She also thanked TVB, East Asia Records, fans and the entire music team. She said, "if some feels that I have to work even harder, I will do my best to fulfill the singer duty." Wong Yuen Chi after performing received a standing ovation from the singers. The Most Popular Female Singer went to seven time winner Yung Cho Yi, an expected result. When Lee Hak Kun presented the award to Joey, Joey said to him, "You come back. The first year when he and I won an award, that was when he got married. Now he has two sons. I really feel very happy, thank you TVB for encouraging me again. Many people said that since it wasn't the first award, aren't you used to it? Actually no, this year I worked very hard on learning to play the guitar, spent a lot of time to communicate with music. Hopefully next year I would reach this destination." The Most Popular Male Singer went to four time winner Ku Kui Ke. On the stage he thanked Emperor and TVB and said that 18 years ago when he released his first record, he was a kid who really liked singing. Now he will produce his Cantonese and Mandarin record, make his own music video. Now he not only liked, he loved his music job very much. He tearfully said, "In recent years at Hong Kong award shows, everyone's attention has been on who competed with who, the power struggle between companies and less on the effort and hard work that singers paid. I started to get a little confused on the meaning of attending ceremonies, but when I brought the awards to celebrations, company colleagues would be very excited and emotional, every year I would go to fan club meetings and bring this award for fans to take pictures with. I saw how happy the fans were, and I realized that to them it was very important." The Solid Gold Gold Prize went to Lam Fung's CHOK. Lam Fung said that this award did not belong to him but to all of Hong Kong, because Chok was a creation of Hong Kong. He said, "I want to thank very much musicians who have worked very hard with me this year. This year I have experienced a lot of rises and falls, hopefully everyone will bring my Chok back. Next Year I will Chok for everyone again." Last night Yung Cho Yi and Lam Fung both won four awards. With the earlier Metro Radio, Radio Hong Kong and Commercial Radio and last night's TVB music awards, Yung Cho Yi won 14 awards and defeated Chan Yik Shun with his 12 awards to become the year's big winner. When Joyce Cheng Yun Yi received the Most Popular Female Rookie silver prize, she broke down in tears and joked that she did not have looks, figures or long legs, but she would continue to work hard. This award was a good start. She also thanked her mother Lydia Shum Din Ha. The Female Rookie Gold Prize winner Lam Yun Tung was teary eyed. When Ng Wing Mei announced her friend Cheung Chi Lam's Solid Gold award, she screamed in excitement and pointed out that her good friend waited for 20 years and finally got it. Cheung Chi Lam thanked TVB and his company and also said that he only took a small step forward. Guest performers included Tat Ming, Sally Yeh (Yip Sin Man), Jeff Chan Shun Jit and five major's Hacken Lee Hak Kun. 2011 JADE SOLID GOLD BEST TEN MUSIC AWARDS http://b.tvb.com/jsg/ TOP TEN JADE SOLID GOLD AWARDS ALL STAR GLAM EXAM (Grasshoppers) HEAVENLY LADDER (C All Star) WATER LILY (Ivana Wong Yuen Chi) CHOK (Raymond Lam Fung) ASK WHY AGAIN (Edmond Leung Hong Man) FLOWER AND A THOUSAND TREES (Joey Yung Cho Yi) EXPLODED (Leo Ku Kui Ke) STILL (Jade Kwan Sum Yin) FALLEN FOR ALIEN (Julian Cheung Chi Lam) EVERY YEAR (Charlene Choi Cheuk Yin) MOST POPULAR CHINESE SONG GOLD: 3650 (Twins) SILVER: LET ME LOVE YOU FOR A HOUR (Raymond Lam Fung) BRONZE: LAST LOVER (Joey Yung Cho Yi) MOST POPULAR COMMERCIAL SONG GOLD: SURGE (Joey Yung Cho Yi) SILVER: MAKE UP FREE VACATION (HotCha) BRONZE: EXTRAORDINARY (Mag Lam Yun Tung) RISING ROOKIE: Sita Chan Hei Yi MOST POPULAR MALE ROOKIE GOLD: Alfred Hui Ting Hung SILVER: Terry Zou (Chow Man Ching) BRONZE: Rednoon MOST POPULAR FEMALE ROOKIE GOLD: Mag Lam Yun Tung SILVER: Joyce Cheng Yun Yi BRONZE: Abella Leung Yau Ka MOST POPULAR GROUP GOLD: Grasshoppers SILVER: C All Star BRONZE: RubberBand MOST POPULAR CREATIVE SINGER GOLD: Pong Nan Yik Bong SILVER: Ivana Wong Yuen Chi BRONZE: William Chan Wai Ting OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE GOLD: Jonathan Wong Chi Hin SILVER: Wong Cho Nam BRONZE: Ella Koon Yun Na MOST POPULAR DUET GOLD: PINKY SWEAR (Jason Chung Yat Hin, Karene Mak Bui Yi) SILVER: IDIOT (SOR GUA) Ken Hung Cheuk Lap, Sherman Chung Shu Man BRONZE: SPICY LIFE (Barry Yip Man Fai, Dik E Det) MOST POPULAR SONG ADAPTTION: BIRD CAGE (Mag Lam Yun Tung) BEST SONG WRITING: Tang Chi Wai, Chong Dong Yan (CHOK) BEST LYRICS: Wyman Wong Wai Man (FLOWER AND A THOUSAND TREES) BEST SONG ARRANGEMENT: Fung Hong Ming@the invisible men (WATER LILY) BEST SONG PRODUCER: Choi Yat Kit (ALL STAR GLAM EXAM) MOST POPULAR MALE SINGER: Leo Ku Kui Ke MOST POPULAR FEMALE SINGER: Joey Yung Cho Yi ASIA PACIFIC MOST POPULAR HONG KONG MALE SINGER: Raymond Lam Fung ASIA PACIFIC MOST POPULAR HONG KONG FEMALE SINGER: Ivana Wong Yuen Chi SOLID GOLD GOLD PRIZE: CHOK (Raymond Lam Fung) * (2012/01/09) THE GREAT MAGICIAN (DAI MOR SHOOK SI) yesterday held a press conference in Beijing. Director Derek Yee Tung Sing and the cast including Tony Leung Chiu Wai, Lau Ching Wan, Zhou Xun, Yan Ni and others attended. Lau Ching Wan pointed out that in the film Leung Chiu Wai and Zhou Xun hit him and even forced him to recite a Putonghua tongue twister. Yee Tung Sing denied that and said that in the film he already put Lau Ching Wan in a romance with Zhou Xun, which was already considered a joy for him. He even arranged seven wives for him. Yet he never would have guessed that he still had complaints. Next time he would arrange seven men for him. Leung Chiu Wai also said that his image in the film was too serious, thus he was extremely envious and Yan Ni and Wu Gang's comedic performances. Yee Tung Sing joked that Wai Jai in the film was responsible for being handsome with infinite charm. Yet Wai Jai was very glad to work with Yee Tung Sing and so many excellent actors. In addition it was a very happy comedy that left many beautiful memories in his life. In the future when he will recall this production he will laugh. Wai Jai even asked the director to save a spot for him in the sequel. Zhou Xun also stated that she was very honored to be able to work with two Best Actors and thanked the director for giving her the opportunity. Wai Jai has been working on Wong Kar Wai's THE GRANDMASTERS (YUT DOI JUNG SI) for over two years. For the character Wai Jai has given a lot and was even injured on the production. His wife Carina Lau Ka Ling's heart could not have ached more as she blamed Wong Kar Wai. Wai Jai yesterday admitted that he would not work with Wong Kar Wai again for awhile. THE GREAT MAGICIAN director Yee Tung Sing revealed that Wai Jai once said that he would make five more movies then retire, but Wai Jai denied that. "I hope that my entire life is in acting, to have work at every stage." Wai Jai said that he would like more chances to make comedies. As soon as he said that people were reminded that he did not want to work with Wong Kar Wai who rarely made comedy films. He said, "I just finished Wong Kar Wai's movie, both of us are very tired and need a long time to recover. Maybe it will be a long, long while before we work together again. No one should be too concerned about me working with him, for now we wouldn't." Cecilia Cheung Pak Chi who Yee Tung Sing made into a star recently has been poison at the box office. Yee Tung Sing spoke on her behalf and hoped that the media would not treat this matter as a joke. He thought that Pak Chi should have someone around her to tell her the truth. "I don't know why she was in such a hurry to take so many roles, but I understand that she alone has to feed her entire family. Her poor box office doesn't mean that she doesn't know how to act. I don't dare to confirm that I will work with her again or not though." * (2012/01/08) The 34th Top Ten Chinese Gold Song Awards last night took place at the Hong Kong Design Institute. The Most Excellent Top Ten Popular Singer Award and the Highest Selling Singer of the Year remained in the pockets of Eason Chan Yik Shun and Joey Yung Cho Yi. Eason also won the National Best Male Singer. Along with Top Ten Excellent singer and a Gold Song award, he became the big winner with five awards. The National Best Female Singer went to Natasha Na Ying; Joey with four awards was slightly behind Eason. This year due to same score a Gold Song was added, as the eleventh gold song went to William So Wing Hong's THAT EVERYBODY, which also brought him the "Global Chinese Best Gold Song". With the Top Ten Excellent Singer award he had three awards. The multiple Commercial Radio Chik Chak award winner Khalil Fong Datong last night also won three awards, including Top Ten Excellent Singer, Most Excellent Popular Mandarin Song Bronze Prize and National Best Chinese Song. Yet strangely, he did not have a single gold song. Winning the Most Excellent Popular Mandarin Song Gold Prize with THOSE YEARS, Hu Xia also won a Gold Song award. After Most Excellent Popular Mandarin Song Silver and Bronze Award winners G.E.M. and Fong Datong gave their speech, the background music already started before Hu Xia had a chance to speak and hinted that he had to sing first. He did not understand Cantonese and looked confused. After singing he said that the two awards were rather surprising. He also greeted the audience in not so fluent Cantonese, but before he gave his thank you speech the host already pushed him backstage. Kay Tse on Kay with YOUR HAPPINESS won a gold song award, but when she performed the song, the event played DECEMBER 20 instead. She could only sing along and the audience did not have a chance to hear her award winning song. Winning the Rookie with the Most Potential Gold Prize, Joyce Cheng Yun Yi on the stage publicly thanked mommy Lydia Shum Din Ha and daddy Adam Cheng Siu Chau. Earlier at the Metro Radio and Commercial Radio awards she did not thank Chau Guoon, last night was her first public thank you to her father. The Rookie silver and bronze prizes went to Mag Lam Yun Tung and Alfred Hui Ting Hung. This year's newly added Microblog powered Singer Award went to Raymond Lam Fung. Last night due to limited seating, only 570 people could attend and thus all those on hand were industry insiders and guests. Singers were arranged to sit in a room backstage and the event did not permit them to leave so they could accept the award at anytime. The event invited Patrick Tse Yin, Teddy Robin Kwan, Jeremy Liu (Lam Chi chin), WHEN HEAVEN BURNS (TIN YU DEI)'s young "Ka Ming" Stanley Cheung King Shun and model Lin Li as guest presenters. Sei Gor presented the Golden Needle Award to Jenny Tseng (Yun Nei). After Yun Nei performed several classic hits, Sei Gor appeared. As soon as Yun Nei saw Sei Gor she raised her arms and walked toward him, "My idol, my idol!" Then she embraced Sei Gor and raised the award together. She said that she was very honored to receive this award from Sei Gor. Sei Gor joked that he has listened to her songs since he was little, he never thought that she would still sing so well now. The host asked where did Sei Gor admired Yun Nei the most. Sei Gor said that he admired her entire body, then Sei Gor gave her a congratulatory kiss. Yun Nei said that this award was a recognition, proving her effort of singing for everyone over the years was not wasted. She also thanked every friends who she has worked with and viewers in front of the television, because without them she would not be there. Her daughter Melody also returned to Hong Kong to witness her award. Yun Nei said, "Melody is proud of me, I want to show her how fine her Ma is!" The last time Ching Wan promoted in Malaysia was already eight years ago. When Ching Wan arrived in Malay again, fans were very excited. The event invited top Malaysian champion magician to perform. Ching Wan joked that the magician was so amazing that he absolutely could not be near him, as he was afraid that he would be transported back to Hong Kong. What did Ching Wan miss the most about Malaysia? Ching Wan said, "The weather, Hong Kong truly is cold. Today when I got off the plane I saw sunshine, which truly felt very comfortable." When he met with fans at the cinema, Ching Wan played character reenactment with fans. Ching Wan even played Zhou Xun's character and asked fans to try to make him smile. One of the participants was very nervous, as he was silent in front of his idol. Ching Wan immediately used a high octave tone and flirted with him, which made everyone laugh. Another female viewer sang a mountain song to Ching Wan to express her love. After the first verse Ching Wan was already cracking up. Ching Wan pointed out that this promotional trip was very pleasant, seeing how enthusiastic viewers were was very memorable. * (2012/01/07) The Jay Chou (Chow Kit Lun) and Nicholas Tse Ting Fung starred film THE VIRAL FACTOR (YIK JIN) two nights ago held a screening in Shanghai. After viewers saw Chow Kit Lun's performance, they described him as fighting with effort but seemingly having the same expression despite emotional highs and lows. In one scene Chow Kit Lun drank while watching Tse Ting Fung run, some criticized that he was advertising the milk tea with a lack of expression. Chow Kit Lun said that the most memorable scene was his final scene with Ting Fung. Speaking of his sloppy look, he said, "At first I was surprised. Later I thought it was very masculine. I am already 33, I can't keep playing student romance. I saw how wild Ting Fung could be with his performance, but I ultimately am a singer and have to keep the image in mind." * (2012/01/07) As the New Year starts, the site Sohu's Top Ten Best and Worst Film Poll again surfaced. Cecilia Cheung Pak Chi and Richie Jen (Yam Yin Chai) both became Rotten Film Actor and Actress. Since her divorce, Pak Chi who has been away from film for years went from a divorced woman into a film industry hot property as different teams added to their offers for her help. Unfortunately they all bombed at the box office and disappointed each one of their dream. She too was elected the rotten film heavenly queen online. Pak Chi came back to make THE LEGENDARY AMAZONS (YEUNG MOON NUI JEUNG) and TREASURE HUNT (MO GA JI BO). Pak Chi who was treated time and time again to be the film gold label finally became "box office poison". Cheung Pak Chi's return to the silver screen not only was accused of being the "expired" beauty that her heavy pancake make up could not make up for but also her discomfort in front of the camera. No matter when she played an accessory assistant, Lara Croft, strong businesswoman or gentle housewife, all anyone saw was her haunted face with eyes opened as wide as bronze bells and a smile that seemed to be laughing but not on her lips. Yam Yin Chai's performance was criticized as stiff as ever. Yam Yin Chai and Cheung Pak Chi's performance in that film could rival each other in terms of rottenness and contributed to this year's ensemble performance that made many people collapse. As for the top ten rotten films, they were THE ISLAND (GOO DOH GAING WON), MURAL (WAT BEI), THE LEGENDARY AMAZONS (YEUNG MOON NUI JEUNG), TREASURE HUNT (MO GA JI BO), SHENZHOU 11, THE SORCERER AND THE WHITE SNAKE (BAK SEH CHUEN SHUET), EAST MEETS WEST 2011 (DONG SING SAI JAU 2011), MY KINGDOM (DAI MO SUN), THE DEVIL INSIDE ME (DUET MING SUM TIU) and LOVE IN SPACE (CHUEN KAU YIT LUEN). The Top Ten Best Films are FLYING SWORDS OF DRAGON GATE (LUNG MOON FEI GAP), FLOWERS OF WAR (GUM LING SUP SAM CHAI), LOVE IS NOT BLIND, OVERHEARD 2 (SIT TING FUNG WON 2), REST ON YOUR SHOULDER (GEIN SEUNG DIP), WU XIA, THE PIANO IN A FACTORY, STARRY STARRY NIGHT, KORA and DEAR ENEMY. * (2012/01/06) Kelly Chen Wai Lam was pregnant when she made the Lunar New Year film ALL'S WELL ENDS WELL 2012 (BAK SING PO HEI) but her professional performance was not affected at all. She was just as lively on and off screen. In the film she played a photographer and off screen she also treated Louis Koo Tin Lok like her model as she often asked him to make poses. At first she signed the ALL'S contract before confirming that she was with child again. She immediately told the boss Raymond Wong Pak Ming, who asked the team to take extra care of Kelly, arrange for loose clothing and flat shoes for the shoot just to be safe. Although she was with child, Kelly still displayed her professionalism at work. Playing a photographer, Kelly only had eyes for construction worker Goo Jai. She even followed him to his construction site to take pictures, as she transformed into a photographer to capture Goo Jai's most masculine side. Stepping onto a construction site for the first time, Kelly was very excited during the shoot and was curious about everything. She kept asking Goo Jai about everything and even asked him to pick up professional tools like the wrench for her to take pictures with. Even off camera she was like that. Goo Jai gladly complied with Kelly's every need as if he became a professional model! In real life Goo Jai was an avid photographer. He and Kelly talked about photography when he was not in a scene. Goo Jai praised Kelly on their first collaboration. "She is very optimistic and happy, she brings a lot of positive energy and joyful atmosphere to us." In order to coordinate with his construction worker look, he put on an overall and went topless. Because half a month before the shoot Goo Jai was already in training, he carried weights with him. As soon as he had time he would work out to look even more masculine. * (2012/01/06) Tang Wei in the just released film SPEED ANGELS (GIK CHOOK TIN SI) played a "tom boy" driver. However director Jingle Ma Chor Sing pointed out that the intricate emotional scene at a wedding was much more difficult than the racing scene. From the still, Tang Wei was dressed in white and very femininely. She joked that she was not used to it. "Normally the racing suits were very loose. In the wedding scene I wore a very elegant white dress that could rival the bride's gown. Because my character was more tomboyish, she normally wouldn't wear a dress!" * (2012/01/06) The film THE GREAT MAGICIAN (DAI MOR SHOOK SI) held a premiere last night. Tony Leung Chiu Wai, Lau Ching Wan, Zhou Xun and Derek Yee Tung Sing attended. Carina Lau Ka Ling came in support of her husband Wai Jai. Recently Lau Ka Ling was rumored to have purchased a 30 million yuan home for her husband. Wai Jai said that he had no idea. Although the gift has not arrived in his hands, old lady Lau Ka Ling's "flesh delivery" of love and company for the movie already melted him. When asked about the gift, Wai Jai asked whether it was a surprise. Perhaps the reporters ruined it, but he really had no idea. Wai Jai said that Ka Ling has always had properties in Shanghai, maybe she just switched homes or bought one for Mommy. The Shanghai home would be useless to him since he would not move to Shanghai. Wai Jai said that normally he would exchange gifts with Ka Ling for fun, especially on holidays or birthdays. Last month for Ka Ling's birthday he gave her a thoughtful gift that all women liked. If he received the 30 million home would he return the favor? He joked, "How can that be possible, don't be silly! Stop testing me." This Lunar New Year he might be in Hong Kong, with work on hand he had concerns despite wanting to go skiing. He has not gone in two years already and he really wanted to go. Wai Jai still had Wong Kar Wai's THE GRANDMASTERS (YUT DOI JUNG SI) to work on. He looked awkward when asked about this film as he added that it will wrap soon. Speaking of Andy Lau Tak Wa's impending fatherhood, would Wai Jai catch up in a hurry? He said that it was up to nature, including whether he would accept artificial insemination. He said that having a child could not be rushed, it was not like all he had to do was wish and it would be granted. He wanted to win the lottery too! Lau Ching Wan and Yee Tung Sing rushed from Shanghai to promote. They were working on the film SIU SUT DIK JI DAN in the Mainland. Speaking of his good friend Daniel Wu (Ng Yu Cho)'s good news as his wife Lisa S was rumored to be pregnant, Yee Tung Sing said that he immediately sent a congratulation text to him as soon as he heard, but Ng Yin Cho said that it was not true. Yee Tung Sing was disappointed as he thought a little Daniel would definitely be very cute. Some suggested for Yee Tung Sing to have his own as Lau Tak Wa too would become a father. He said, "Wa Jai is younger than me! I don't know if I can." THE GREAT MAGICIAN is the first film that he directed in the Mainland. He hoped that a comedy in the New Year would be suitable to Mainland viewer taste. He was also adjusting to work in the Mainland. Would he head north and stop making Hong Kong films? Yee Tung Sing really wanted to make a Hong Kong film, but finding a film investor in Hong Kong was hard. If he found someone it would only be for 10 million small production. He did not want to make it hard for his actor friends and ask them to lower their salaries to make his movies. * (2012/01/06) Laughing Gor Michael Tse Tin Wa again jumped from television to the big screen as the film TURNING POINT 2 (LAUGHING GOR ji CHIM JUI FAN) followed the television series LIVES OF OMISSION (CHIM HUNG JUI GIK)'s story. Laughing after murdering So Sing Pak was found guilty and sent to prison, then another undercover mission began. Tse Tin Wa in the film had many scenes with the Francis Ng Chun Yu played Professor. The card scene near the end was unforgettable for him. Tse Tin Wa praised Chun Yu's performance as unforgettable to him even now. "When Chun Yu took his mark for the first scene, his interpretation was completely different from what I imagined. His interpretation to me had an impact on me, stimulated my thinking and gave me a sense of freshness." TURNING POINT 2 was the only Hong Kong film release during the New Year slot, which made Tse Tin wa feel very proud. Would he like its box office to be better than TURNING POINT (BIN JIT)? He said, "I never thought about it. If I think like that, I would have stress." Would he work on another series about Laughing? The audience and TVB would decide. Kate Tsui Tsz Shan went from LIVES OF OMISSION's smart lawyer to TURNING POINT 2's mental patient. The characters differed drastically. She said, "I rather enjoyed playing a mental patient, the character had potential. The only bad part was the shoot was too rushed." She recalled her first scene was when she learned that So Sing Pak was dead and she collapsed from crying. It was completely just as the sun rose and she only had two opportunities. It was dangerously close but luckily it was completed. "I only had two chances to make this scene good. I had to cry until I collapsed, the stress was tremendous and it was very tragic! I at first thought only the first day of work would be like that, but later many important scenes were just like that too. Even so, I still enjoyed the production process. The outside response has been very positive too and I felt comforted." * (2012/01/06) The film TURNING POINT 2 (LAUGHING GOR ji CHIM JUI FAN) two nights ago held promotions at two Mongkok cinemas. Michael Tse Tin Wa, MC Jin and William Chak Wai Lim promoted as they gave away sugar canes. The film after a week in release made 5 million. Tse Tin Wa was very satisfied with this performance but he still did not have time to go himself. Did he feel avenged? Tin Wa said that he could not say that but it made a dent for Hong Kong film and proved that Hong Kong people still supported Hong Kong films. * (2012/01/06) Mag Lam Yun Tung, Michelle Wai (Si Nga), Jeana Ho Pui Yu, Lai Yin San and Mr. two nights ago attended their new film HEI SAI YIU GWUN wrap banquet. Jeana said that she was saving the sexy dress for the premiere and already had an idea on the look. Although the film already wrapped, Jeana suggested to the director a band scene in the love scene with her and Dash because she has never tried it before. However both the director and Dash rejected her suggestion. Dash pointed out that the bed was too soft to jam on and the director said that he would wait until the LAN KWAI FONG (HEI OI YEH PO) film series. Was Jeana addicted to love scenes? She said, "No, I just want to try something different. I want to play a lesbian too." She also said that actually in the film she and Dash had very few intimate scenes because in the story they have already been dating for 8 or 9 years. However while working with Mr. she saw their passion for music, which made her interested in forming a girl band. Would she work on LAN KWAI FONG 2? She said that she would only participate in the film's casting but instead would participate in LAN KWAI FONG 3. Because she was responsible for casting for the first time, she asked the candidates not to be too nervous, to relax and it would be the best if their figures were not better than hers. This film was Mag's first lead role. She played romantic rivals with Si Nga. They both liked Mr.'s Alan but finally Mag won. Was Mag very sassy with her boyfriend? She said, "Sometimes, sometimes I would be sassy and sometimes I wouldn't care. However I wouldn't hit my boyfriend. Actually with couples acting up a little wasn't anything major. The most important is not to turn it into an argument." This year she plans to focus on music. Even if she made more money from making movies she still liked to sing. Si Nga in the film played a single mother for the first time and had a five year old daughter. It was a challenge for her acting. However she remembered to praise Mag's acting. In one drunk scene Mag did not feel well but her performance was still very convincing. * (2012/01/06) ROMANCING IN THIN AIR 2 (GO HOI BUT JI LUEN II) will be released during Valentine's Day. The film company has always used a snowy scenery as a poster theme. For Louis Koo Tin Lok and Sammi Cheng Sau Man who lived in the thin air deep mountains for two months, the snow was even more memorable because when snow fell in Shangri-La, the temperature was 20 degrees Celsius below zero. Sammi kept looking forward to snow though. "yet waiting for snow was very tough. Everyday we stared at the sky, but I thought the longer I looked forward to it the more feeling it had. Waiting was a process, I would enjoy it." Sammi spoke so romantically because while shooting in the snow most of the time she did not need to move as most of the time she fainted. In the film Goo Jai had to carry her out of the forest. When Goo Jai talked about this scene he made it so very easy, but actually the crew all worried for him. Because in Shangri-La even quiet breathing was somewhat difficult, Goo Jai even had to exercise, carry Sammi and run in the forest. The crew was afraid that Goo Jai would have breathing difficulties. Goo Jai said to everyone, "What are you afraid of? Sammi isn't even 100 pounds, carrying her is very easy. You don't have to worry so much!" However, easy might be easy. After each shot when Goo Jai put Sammi down, Sammi still made fun of him, "You say it's very easy, you are all out of breath!" * (2012/01/06) Deep Ng Ho Hong guest starred in the film THE VIRAL FACTOR (YIK JIN) and even flew to Kuala Lumpur for the shoot. Aside from a series of scenes with Nicholas Tse Ting Fung he was also beaten into a bloody pulp. In this scene that was shot in an abandoned bus maintenance ground near Kuala Lumpur. As Ting Fung's subordinate Ng Ho Hong was beat into a pulp after selling out Ting Fung. Not only was his busted open, he even had to be stuffed into a narrow trunk of a car. Ting Fung said, "This time is the fourth time I work with Deep. He is a serious actor. Malaysia's climate is hot and humid, I not only beat Deep beyond recognition, but also stuff him into a car trunk. Everyone can imagine how tough it is." Aside from working with Deep, Ting Fung also had fight scenes with several thugs and was even rammed into a concrete wall. The loud and violent sounds from the fight left many in a cold sweat. Director Dante Lam Chiu Yin joked that Deep's guest starring was an enormous "sacrifice". "When the entire film was completed, Deep was trapped in the car trunk for almost eight hours. He was covered in sweat and stank all over and his face was full of blood. Nothing was left of his handsome image." * (2012/01/05) The Chrissie Chau Sau na starred film 3D BAUHINIA WOMAN (3D JI GAING HUP) is still under preparation, but the film company has already become its promotion and even spent 1 million on two double decker buses. The entire bus was filled with Sister Na's photos as both sides had a tough looking Sister Na holding a Bauhinia mask; on another side was the tenderness of the heroine behind the mask. This film has broken the rule of promoting a month before the film's release. As early as last year it has already began promoting and will not open until next year. * (2012/01/05) Jimmy Lin starred in SPEED ANGELS (GIK CHOOK TIN SI) and served as its racing consultant. In one scene he drove a truck to the raceway when he was intercepted and thugs beat him up. He successfully shook them off and with Han Jae-Suk drove the race car to the raceway just in time. Jimmy Lin personally performed the stunt and drove fast on the highway. Director Jingle Ma Chor Sing pointed out that Jimmy Lin was so fast that he almost could not capture him on film. Jimmy Lin had the last say on racing technique but he and the director still had discussions. He had more sentimental considerations. Jimmy Lin joked that he as a professional driver was under the guidance of the director who did not have a driver's license! * (2012/01/05) Andy Lau Tak Wa after announcing to his fans "good news at home" on his official site over a month ago yesterday finally met the press in Hong Kong to promote A SIMPLE LIFE (TOH JEH). As for his wife's pregnancy status, Wa Jai was reluctant to reveal much and only admitted that his wife is four months pregnant. Yet his smile came from the heart, obviously Wa Jai as the soon to be father was both elated and excited. He admitted that he has been waiting for this moment for a long time. Reporters immediately congratulated Wa Jai as soon as he appeared. He laughed in acceptance, "Thank you thank you!" Yet he honestly said that he did not want to say too much because this interview was for work. Later he again cited his golden phrase, "Be nice!" Reporters responded with Leon Lai Ming's golden phrase, "Let us be bad one more time." Wa Jai laughed and shook his head. He said, "Earlier when I said it it was three month, now it is four months. (The period is) over!" When asked whether his wife was pregnant, he laughed and said, "OK, OK, thank you everyone. (Are you excited?) OK! (Boy or Girl?) Thank you." Speaking of many friends' well wishes, he said that he received everyone's well wishes and thanked everyone. Has he communicated with Miriam Yeung Chin Wa? Wa Jai said no. Has he booked a bed? He said, "They know! I too know I have to get past this process (questions)." When would Wa Jai stop working? He pointed out that later he will have to work on DWELLING IN THE FUCHUN MOUNTAIN until after the Lunar New Year. After he completed all contracted work he would stop. He would still work on Johnnie To Kei Fung's film because it would be shot in Hong Kong. Has he told Ah To when he would stop working? Wa Jai pointed out that this film would be shot in Hong Kong so it would be OK. Has he attended any parenting class? He said, "Thank you thank you, let's talk in private. (Have you bought any baby product?) Why are you so stubborn?" Reporters pointed out that everyone have been waiting for a long time and were happy for him. Wa Jai said, "Me too, thank you thank you." Has he hired any childbirth assistant because some required appointments a year in advance. Wa Jai said, "A year in advance? Who knows when the baby will come? Pregnancy only takes ten months." Would his mother help with her grandchild? He said, "I don't know, let me ask for you." The Lunar New year will come soon, would this year be much more meaningful? Wa Jai said, "Please let me go. (We can get laisee!) Thank you for your concern." When asked again whether the baby will be a boy or a girl? Wa Jai joked that privately he could tell everyone. He himself liked both. As god-grandmother Deanie Ip Tak Han was asked whether the baby will be a boy or a girl. She joked, "I can't say, I can't talk about family stuff." * (2012/01/05) Producer Derek Yee Tung Sing, director Law Chi Leung yesterday held actors Nicholas Tse Ting Fung, Lau Ching Wan, Wu Gang, Liu Kai Chi and Jing Boran to attend the film SIU SUT DIK JI DAN (VANISHING BULLET) set visit press conference. Siu Bo revealed that the film would through "great detectives investigating a mystery and solves a conspiracy" story bring police film into another climax. The film was a story that director Law Chi Leung has planned for five years. He stressed that the film had both "action" and "suspense" in order to create the most entertaining and intelligent work of his career so far. The film took place in the largest armory during the Republic era. A series of mysterious murders took place, as each cursed "phantom bullet" led detective Lau Ching Wan and hot blooded investigator Tse Ting Fung into a dangerous pursuit of the culprit. Ching Wan was in THE MAD DETECTIVE (SUN TAM), but this time this detective was "very awkward. He knew neither kung fu nor gun use". Having played many "vicious cops" Ting Fung this time changed from his past impulsive image and displayed extraordinary intelligence and scheming. Although they worked together for the first time they were already full of chemistry. Ting Fung admitted that he participated because of Ching Wan, "the actor who the most stars want to work with". He thought that being able to work with "Brother Ching Wan" was a recognition of himself. Privately he would even "peek" at his acting. Ching Wan praised Ting Fung as very hard work and was envious of his intimate romantic scenes with Mini Yang Mi. They agreed that their first collaboration was a lot of fun and had exchanges both on and off screen. At the shoot they were able to set off spark. * (2012/01/05) Hong Kong film's performance of the past year was not considered ideal, but the year's box office was better than before. The annual revenue reached 1.3 billion, which the industry was excited about. Intercontinental, mainly a foreign film distributor, distributed TRANSFORMERS: DARK OF THE MOON, which was the year's box office champion with 84 million. Intercontinental's Terry Lai was pleased with the performance but dared not be satisfied. The fact was among last year's top ten box office, Intercontinental had three. Aside from TRANSFORMERS it also distributed KUNG FU PANDA 2 and I LOVE HONG KONG (NGOR OI HK HOI SUM MAN SHUI). Lady Lai said that the performance was mainly due to film quality and the strengthen of collaborating companies. Regrettably the only local production to break into the top five was the extreme 3D SEX AND ZEN: EXTREME ECSTASY (3D YUK PO TUEN ji GIK LOK BO GAM). Lady Lai said that as a distributor she was pleased with the performance but as a part of the Hong Kong film industry she looked forward to Hong Kong domestic productions to be able to perform well in the new year and rival foreign films. The film is about a women's racing team's struggle for victory and love. It is very cheerful and sells beautified packaging, regrettably it is exaggerated and loses realism, more trouble than it is worth. (Two out of Five Stars) MY NAME IS KHAN Is Worth Of Attention The Indian mainstream full length feature film MY NAME IS KAHN can be said as the Indian version FORREST GUMP. Indian star Shah Rukh Khan plays the autistic male lead who develops relationships and adventures in the U.S., with song and dance as well as natural disaster special effect scenes. This film is not filled with mischievous comedy entertainment value like 3 IDIOTS. It has an uniquely serious subject that targets the U.S. post 911 anti-terrorism fervor and stresses against lopsided discrimination against different race Muslims. This subject has no way to become a surprise hit in Hong Kong, but its intention is detention, the production has quality and is an alternative choice that is worthy of attention. (Two and a Half out of Five Stars) - SHEK KEI 2. TA KUNG PAO, JANUARY 8 2012, LIGHT SHADOW PATH LOCAL BOX OFFICE MYTH The Hong Kong Motion Picture Industry Association announced the 2011 Hong Kong film box office summary. The year's total box office was HK$1.39 billion, a 50 million increase from 2010 and the highest gross in the last three years. The top three of ten highest grossing Hong Kong films are 3D SEX AND ZEN: EXTREME ECSTASY (3D YUK PO TUEN ji GIK LOK BO GAM) with 41 million, I LOVE HONG KONG (NGOR OI HK HOI SUM MAN SHUI) in second with 26 million and in third with 24 million is OVERHEARD 2 (SIT TING FUNG WON II). Non Hong Kong champion is TRANSFORMERS: DARK OF THE MOON with 84 million, in second is HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS PART 2 with 76 million. In third is YOU ARE THE APPLE OF MY EYE with 61 million (still in release). Worthy of mention is YOU's revenue, which has already broken past Hong Kong Chinese film box office record. This is an unprecedented breakthrough in 30 years. Hong Kong film no longer being the Hong Kong film box office champion is not news anymore. In the past 20 years it has suffered defeat at the hands of Hollywood films (in the 80s it had a long winning streak), but falling behind Taiwan production has made many film professionals lament. Undoubtedly, our understanding of the new generation of audience has already had problems, but the Mainland market with its infinite potential has become Hong Kong film worker's strong backing. Hong Kong viewers can no longer control Hong Kong film's "life and death". In the past year the top ten Hong Kong film box office, three made only 8 million. These ten Hong Kong films' total box office was less than 200 million. In comparison to the Mainland box office revenue, it could be considered beyond miniscule. The 2011 Mainland Chinese film box office 11th place film MY OWN SWORDSMAN made 180 million RMB, after converting to Hong Kong currency it is the total of the top ten Hong Kong films in Hong Kong. In 20th place DON'T GO BREAKING MY HEART (DAN SUN NAM NUI)'s take was 95 million, ten times of its Hong Kong box office. Hong Kong market no longer serves any key purpose for the success or failure of Hong Kong film. Two end of the year major releases THE FLOWERS OF WAR and FLYING SWORDS OF DRAGON GATE (LUNG MOON FEI GAP) are still in release but both have already exceeded 400 million at the box office. The former is Old Mou (Zhang Yimou)'s work and the latter is Old Tsui (Tsui Hark)'s work. Two great Mainland and Hong Kong directors rival each other and are quite busy. Among the top 20 highest grossing films of 2011, 13 have Hong Kong directors. The ratio is shocking. However, another phenomenon is also worthy of attention -- the financing is mostly Mainland. In other words, Hong Kong investment ratio has already gradually declined, the reason is the Mainland film industry does not lack money and is creators and film directors' golden opportunity. Thus, many Hong Kong directors have already settled in Beijing and gradually caught on to the Mainland culture and climate. They are not already up to date with Hong Kong's situation, and the box office issue is even more out of sight, out of mind. - TIN LIK 3. TA KUNG PAO, JANUARY 8 2012, HOTSPOT PURSUIT MUSIC SCENE UNSPOKEN RULE: EACH PLAYS ON ITS OWN Award shows that are considered local music industry events have taken place, the finale TVB JADE SOLID GOLD AWARDS will wrap up tonight. Each organizer's results have its own stance, how can the business community's utility game rules be absolutely fair? Winning singers can hardly be considered as expected. At least different age fans already have different choices. Even when competing with song quality and strength, background and contacts cannot possibly be excluded elements. Thus you can choose you Eason Chan Yik Shun and pumped up Khalil Fong Datong heavily, I can choose my Raymond Lam Fung, rushed to produce the Voice Gang, as well as the music and television comeback of Julian Cheung Chi Lam, the reigning television Best Actor Kevin Cheng Ka Wing should secretly lament why the "Five Major Record Labels" and TVB's relationship thawing happened now, otherwise he would be able to follow Lam Fung's footstep and might even be able to compete for the Most Popular Male Singer in the future. In this era with popularity and momentum you are halfway to success, fans of different distinctions are willing to break out in support. There are many examples of "out with the old, in with the new". Winner of countless awards over the years, Eason Chan Yik Shun this year finally has shown signs of retirement as he plans to follow the leads of elders Alan Tam Wing Lun and Four Great Heavenly Kings and back away from the award stage. Eason's lack of enthusiasm to accept awards does not mean that he does not care about awards, and he has shown no sign of bidding the stage farewell. Instead he is moving ahead by stepping back, as he intends to elevate himself in the show business classes, which his drastically different from when Principle Tam avoided Leslie Cheung Kwok Wing's momentum with his back against the wall. Eason takes this step first before a rival of similar strength appears. Stepping onto this extraordinary class is absolutely wise, like Song God Jacky Cheung Hok Yau who has even more developments after stepping outside the music scene. Commercial Radio presented nine awards to Fong Datong, to be clearer, is to prevent when Eason truly does not appear at the award show stage in the future. It will still have a central figure with similar star power in support, not to mention that they have had quite a relationship. You can say that Fong Datong is getting the best of both worlds, but everyone understand the reasoning of with rights comes duties, in future days their collaboration can be predicted as closer and tighter. With beneficial exchanges and long lasting friendships, both sides already have an understanding. When the math is right both sides win. Music scene new comers rise easily and can be said as the most competitive part of show business, with even more people to entertain and more hidden rules. The much sought after ones like Alan and Andy Lau Tak Wa also chose the suitable time to back out, elevating to the master class saves a lot of effort that is spent on music scene entertaining. Chan Yik Shun is a rare current singer with record selling strength. After so many years of award shows that are respect paying parties, finally he is somewhat tired. Since he still has strength, the time has come to make his status known. Speaking of which, if TVB wants to make its own brand of television Best Actor class singers like Cheng Ka Wing, Wayne Lai Yiu Cheung and Moses Chan Ho, or like the ones with a steady fan base like Michael Tse Tin Wa, Bosco Wong Chung Chak and Tavia Yeung Yi. They can try exploring the music territory since they indeed have singing potential. Aside from their average age is slightly worse than the Voice Gang, they have advantageous overall qualifications. Five major record label singers ultimately have their own stance and restrictions. If you want something done you might as well do it yourself, not to mention that it still has its own Jade Solid Gold hit song promotional channel. With the one stop shopping promotional operation it will not have to be afraid of another uprising from the "five major"! - CHOW YI 4. TA KUNG PAO, JANUARY 8 2012, FILM AND TELEVISION TRAVERSAL MY NAME IS KHAN HAS SOMETHING TO SAY I truly have to thank 3 IDIOTS for the response it triggers, which enables Hong Kong audience to have a chance to enjoy quality Indian films. I am referring to MY NAME IS KHAN, a film with both comedy and class, laughter and tears, and affects people in the hearts. Simply said, this is a story of an autistic India in the U.S., but this Indian is not simple at all. Although he is autistic, he is an mechanical and appliance repair expert. Under his mother's care and tutelage, he has a simple and innocent soul. This male lead Khan (Shah Rukh Khan) in the film brings us from Mumbai to see the U.S. before and after "911", brings us to see through racial discrimination, religious conflict, behind anti-terrorism and the U.S. society, political and other different sensitive subjects. With these seemingly serious yet severely content, director Karan Johar uses a solid method to intricately connect them together with Khan's growth and love so the audience can sense his "good things don't happen twice, disasters don't happen just once" experience. After "911", we perhaps would feel only traveling to and from the U.S. is more troublesome, but actually its influence affected the entire world. The first ones affected are the Islamic people. KHAN examines from another angle, from Khan's family, religion and even his personal experience to display the harm that he suffers; we from Khan see the most basic "good and bad" logic that has been missing for a long time, and the innocent human that modern technology's high speed development smothers. Some may think the country village flooding scene is melodramatic and exaggerated, actually Khan's relationship and development with the African American mother and son reflect real emotions in this area. The outside reaction also points out in the utilitarian society, commercial considerations often sacrifice the benefit of minorities and even human nature. The media and politician relationship of interest that is involved is worthy of our deep thought. This film's best part is Shah Rukh Khan's acting. His portrayal of Khan is naive, focused and stubborn. His convincing performance shows autistic patient's specialty and brings drama and realism to the story development so viewers accept those seemingly exaggerated plots and are even deeply touched; although it does not have Indian film's usual song and dance, the film carries a full load of messages for everyone. - CHUI HIU [ In Production Now/Soon ] Can : Yuen Hung Lit : Reward Alex Man Chi Leung, Fiona Sit Hoi Kei, Wen Chao, Sire Man Choi Can : Dai Jook Hei Ket Lit : Vulgar Comedy d. Not every love story is a fairy tale. After a dramatic wedding feast, unusual love stories unfold towards unexpected endings: a brother and sister in love caught by the mother, a married painter falls for his young life drawing model of same sex, an intimacy between a dance school teacher and his wealthy but senior student, a lesbian couple of which one has role-play paranoid, a dreadful love triangle ending with the girl being beheaded… "Love Actually…Sucks!" celebrates love that no one care but real, for life is love, love as it is. [ PHILADELPHIA QFEST ] Taking inspiration from six different court cases involving crimes of the heart, Scud examines the intense, often self-destructive sexual longings among several well-to-do young Hong Kong residents – gay, lesbian and straight. The film opens with the most scandalous wedding reception ever put on film: a young couple’s marriage ends (in the most dramatic fashion) before it begins. There is the 30-ish married gym instructor who trolls the active bathroom scene for young flesh; a lesbian couple with roleplay issues; a dance instructor who becomes the object of attraction to his much older student; a married painter who falls for his male model; a brother and sister who take family togetherness a bit too literally; and a young man who becomes increasingly deranged until he takes his love interest problems into his own hands. In Scud’s world, every love story is a fairy tale – but here the stories are sexual and troubling. Overall, a complex, sensual and compelling film. But nearby stands Dragon Gate, portal to a lost world under the sands and a vast sandstorm is bearing down on the region. Free. All seating is first-come, first served. Doors open at 6:30pm. UPCOMING MOVIES Series 1: Jang Hun Plus One! Jang Hun started out as an assistant director to Kim Ki-Duk, but with his first film, Rough Cut, he established himself as Korea’s answer to Steven Soderbergh: a director making big budget movies with an independent sensibility. Rough Cut, and Secret Reunion, The Frontline have all become massive box office hits without making an compromises or talking down to their audiences. To round out the trio of movies in this mini-retrospective, we’re including White Night, another crime film that transforms itself into something dark, glittering and truly amazing. Tuesday, February 28, 2012 @ 7pm WHITE NIGHT (2009, 135 minutes, North American Premiere) White Night is a sprawling, evil epic about an unsolved crime that happened 14 years previously that has spilled its poison out over the subsequent years. Based on a best-selling Japanese novel, and featuring a riveting performance by Go Soo, star of The Frontline, director Park Shin-Woo turns this movie into a slick, beautifully realized film about true evil, as a detective refuses to let go of this single case, instead insisting on following its threads for years no matter where they lead. And where they lead is dark and truly shocking. This hit film has been called the best Korean film of 2009 by several critics and once you’ve seen it, it’s hard to forget. Wednesday, February 15, 2012 @ 7pm SECRET REUNION (2010, 116 minutes) Two of Korea’s best actors face off in this blockbuster action flick that manages to be sly, subversive and really funny while delivering white knuckle thrills. Song Kang-Ho (The Host) is a South Korean secret agent who fumbles a sting operation on a North Korean spy. Pop star Gang Dong-Won (Haunters) is the North Korean assassin who has been embedded in the South. After the botched operation, both men are cut loose by their respective agencies and Song becomes a private eye, while Gang sinks into deep cover, trying to survive long enough to go home. Years later, they cross paths and what audiences are treated to is a buddy movie to end all buddy movies. Tuesday, January 24, 2012 @ 7pm ROUGH CUT (2008, 112 minutes) Kim Ki-Duk wrote this high concept knuckle-buster about a spoiled actor, famous for playing gangsters, who hires a real-life gangster to appear in his new flick. It sounds like nothing but a pile of cliches, but Jang Hun ignores the traditional approach and instead focuses on the volcanic, boiling testosterone that drives the conflict between a man used to getting his way because he’s famous, and a man used to getting his way because he’s violent. The seduction of filmmaking, the appeal of acting and the temptation of a street brawl all exert their siren song on the two studs in suits at the heart of this film: superstar So Ji-Sub, surprisingly, playing the gangster and Kang Ji-Hwan as the actor. Tuesday, January 10, 2012 @ 7pm THE FRONTLINE (2011, 133 minutes, East Coast Premiere) One of the biggest hits of 2011, The Frontline is the simple story of a hill: Aerok Hill, a small rise on the Eastern Front of the Korean War that changed hands 30 times over 18 months of fighting. A military investigator is dispatched to see if allegations that the South Korean soldiers tasked with taking the hill are collaborating with their North Korean enemies to deliver letters to their families. It turns out that they are, and that’s the least of it. A movie about men (and some women) trying to hold onto their humanity in the midst of war, Frontline is Korea’s official submission to the Academy Awards. Tribeca Cinemas: 54 Varick Street, on the corner of Canal Street, one block from the A, C, E and 1 train Canal Street stops. Price? Free. All seating is first-come, first serve basis. Doors open at 6:30 pm. ---------------------- HK Top Ten Central hktopten@hotmail.com | http://hktopten.freewebhostx.com
