Centre Stage is a sad, stirring docu drama, based on real life events. Ruan Ling Yu was one of the most talented actors of her era, working in the 'Hollywood of Shanghai', Lienhua Studios. An established star by her early 20s, Ruan was the talk of the silver screen with her striking performances in the silent films of the day. By age 25, she was dead.

Set in the late 20s and early 30s, Centre Stage is directed by Stanley Kwan (Rouge), and opens with Ruan's initial success at Lienhua. Her troubles soon begin as she marries a no good, gambling, womanising lout who's affections prove no match to the charming businessman Tang Chi Shan (Chin Han). Ruan's husband does a deal with her - accepting money for a divorce, and Ruan's career goes from strength to strength. Tang however, is still married.

When Ruan accepts a role in a film called "New Woman", the press ruthlessly attack the film, as it criticises the press. The studio order massive cuts in the film. Ruan's husband turns up, and files a damaging lawsuit; Ruan's star is starting to spiral down ...
