Superbly shot by Tsui , on location in Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon), A Better Tomorrow 3 sees Mark (Chow) fall for seductive underworld femme fatale Anita Mui. Set against the war ravaged closing months of the Vietnam War, Mark changes from an easy going young hoodlum to the over coated, tooth pick chomping, two gun toting gangster supreme already familiar from John Woo' s earlier classic.

With the original two A Better Tomorrow movies made almost a decade before - one begs to ask the questions, was this film really needed? And does it actually add anything to make the original films better? My answer to both is NO! Set as a prequel, this movie is supposed to show how Chow Yun Fat became the killer that he was in the original. It is totally unbelievable to believe that he can go from a quiet, shy, nice person, to suddenly change into a killer! But that's just my opinion!
